We are back with another episode of Dollars and Sense, 00:00:26.92\00:00:31.23 and I am so excited! 00:00:31.26\00:00:33.09 My name is Yvonne Lewis. 00:00:33.13\00:00:34.56 I'm the co-host for this program, 00:00:34.56\00:00:36.33 and our primary host is Ryan Mack. 00:00:36.36\00:00:38.63 And Ryan is a Financial Literacy expert. 00:00:38.67\00:00:42.30 And we have just been getting some incredible information. 00:00:42.34\00:00:46.24 This is Part 2 actually of the Financial Predators Episodes. 00:00:46.27\00:00:52.45 This is Part 2, and Part 1 was incredible. 00:00:52.48\00:00:56.35 So if you didn't get to see it, make sure you order the DVD, 00:00:56.38\00:01:00.69 because you don't want to miss it. 00:01:00.76\00:01:02.49 Ryan, you gave us such great information. 00:01:02.52\00:01:04.66 Can we do like a little recap from Part 1 00:01:04.69\00:01:08.26 and then go on to Part 2? 00:01:08.30\00:01:09.63 Yeah, well the bottom line is that we have a 360 billion 00:01:09.66\00:01:13.40 dollar industry that is attacking our communities. 00:01:13.44\00:01:17.47 360 billion dollars! 00:01:17.57\00:01:19.71 360 billion dollars and they are attacking our communities. 00:01:19.74\00:01:21.88 And they are essentially exploiting what we don't know. 00:01:21.91\00:01:26.21 They are exploiting ignorance. 00:01:26.25\00:01:27.92 I always like to say there's nothing wrong with being 00:01:27.95\00:01:29.88 ignorant, but there is something wrong with staying ignorant. 00:01:29.92\00:01:31.95 So we must address, especially about those things that we 00:01:31.99\00:01:35.92 are not savvy about. 00:01:35.96\00:01:37.59 So I have a Scripture here at Proverbs 15:14 00:01:37.63\00:01:41.76 that says directly to that: 00:01:41.80\00:01:44.00 So, again, we are having in our communities... 00:01:53.07\00:01:55.98 Again, this is not a black, or brown, or white thing, 00:01:56.01\00:01:58.61 this is a green thing. 00:01:58.65\00:02:00.05 And these organizations are going into rural America, 00:02:00.12\00:02:04.65 Appalachia, urban America, outside of Veteran bases, 00:02:04.72\00:02:09.76 and they are putting up check cashing places, 00:02:09.79\00:02:12.73 payday loans, cash advances, title loans, 00:02:12.76\00:02:15.63 refund anticipations loans; everything that individuals are 00:02:15.66\00:02:19.10 trying to do on praying on the undeserved. 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.24 And they have a vested interest at 360 billion dollars. 00:02:21.27\00:02:24.81 That money is made because essentially individuals who are 00:02:24.84\00:02:28.64 using check cashing places, that are donating, essentially, 00:02:28.68\00:02:32.48 going through their fees, 1 to 5% of all their money 00:02:32.51\00:02:35.42 to these check cashing facilities. 00:02:35.48\00:02:36.95 They don't know that they can open up a bank account. 00:02:36.99\00:02:39.85 Those people using payday loans who might say, you know, 00:02:39.89\00:02:42.79 who are donating 2 to 300% interest, 00:02:42.82\00:02:45.23 who are living check to Tuesday. 00:02:45.26\00:02:47.50 And I say donating, because they really are 00:02:47.56\00:02:49.20 giving their money away. 00:02:49.23\00:02:50.60 That's incredible! When I hear about the amount of interest 00:02:50.63\00:02:54.24 that people are paying; that just, it blows me away! 00:02:54.27\00:02:58.47 Right. I mean these, the fees rack up. 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.14 And they are really savvy about being able to navigate 00:03:01.18\00:03:04.41 themselves around usury laws, or paying the right politician 00:03:04.45\00:03:07.45 to make sure they can turn a blind eye to usury laws. 00:03:07.52\00:03:10.59 And so what happens is that now it's almost a free for all. 00:03:10.62\00:03:13.79 Rent to Rim stores, Rent to Own stores. 00:03:13.86\00:03:16.06 There's a Rent to Rim store on Eight Mile in Detroit where 00:03:16.09\00:03:18.99 people can go and rent rims. 00:03:19.03\00:03:21.90 Where... and let me tell you the step further than that. Wow! 00:03:21.96\00:03:25.23 You can rent hair weave. No! 00:03:25.27\00:03:27.60 Yes, you can! Are you serious? 00:03:27.64\00:03:29.64 Oh, you can finance hair weaves. 00:03:29.67\00:03:31.64 Yes, you can finance. 00:03:31.67\00:03:33.14 They have a hair weave financing physicality where people are 00:03:33.17\00:03:36.75 financing hair weaves. 00:03:36.81\00:03:38.15 Well, you know why? 00:03:38.18\00:03:39.51 Because hair weave is expensive. Right. 00:03:39.55\00:03:41.25 It might be a thousand dollars to get a really good job done. 00:03:41.32\00:03:45.02 Uh huh. And so... You've got to have your weave. 00:03:45.09\00:03:47.02 You've got to have your weave. 00:03:47.06\00:03:50.39 You know, we're not knocking it now... you know, some folks, 00:03:50.43\00:03:54.03 we don't want to call it weave, extension, whatever. 00:03:54.10\00:03:56.70 If you want your weave, have your weave. 00:03:56.73\00:03:58.07 But if you have to finance your weave, you don't need the weave. 00:03:58.10\00:04:00.64 Right. That's right; that's true. 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.64 If you have to finance it, and they... 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.64 I went to St. Lucia, and I was there on a mission trip. Uh huh. 00:04:04.67\00:04:11.61 And I'm always picking fights. 00:04:11.68\00:04:13.95 So everywhere I go I pick a fight. 00:04:14.02\00:04:15.98 And I found out that they have this thing called Jump, 00:04:16.02\00:04:19.62 where you, it's a carnival, and you have essentially it's this 00:04:19.69\00:04:23.29 carnival, and there's a huge history in St. Lucia around it. 00:04:23.32\00:04:26.39 And you go, and the people are, they dance in this carnival. 00:04:26.43\00:04:29.46 And there's a huge festival. 00:04:29.50\00:04:30.83 But then before that you have to get the costumes, 00:04:30.87\00:04:34.34 and you have to do all these things. 00:04:34.37\00:04:35.70 But you have to spend money o all this stuff. 00:04:35.74\00:04:37.07 Um! And so as you're in this carnival, becomes extravagant, 00:04:37.11\00:04:40.98 people are actually getting out payday type loans 00:04:41.04\00:04:45.75 to jump in carnival. Wow! 00:04:45.78\00:04:49.08 And I'd never seen it. 00:04:49.12\00:04:50.45 And again, this is to the tune of 2 to 300% interest rate. 00:04:50.49\00:04:53.62 People are taking out these loans so they can buy this 00:04:53.66\00:04:56.83 equipment so they can dance for a month. 00:04:56.89\00:04:58.89 And they have to get their wristband. 00:04:58.93\00:05:00.63 And they can go to any party they want. 00:05:00.66\00:05:02.40 And they can drink and have all this fun. 00:05:02.43\00:05:04.53 And they're getting in debt. 00:05:04.57\00:05:05.90 So when they come out of debt they're drunk, 00:05:05.93\00:05:07.34 they're tired, and they're broke. 00:05:07.37\00:05:08.84 And it's like, Wait a minute! 00:05:08.87\00:05:10.91 So, you are in poverty before, but you took out this loan, 00:05:10.94\00:05:14.34 so you can jump in this carnival? 00:05:14.38\00:05:15.94 I mean this is not just in the U. S. 00:05:15.98\00:05:18.28 This is around the world. 00:05:18.31\00:05:20.02 It's international. 00:05:20.12\00:05:21.45 Where we are financing, essentially financing either 00:05:21.48\00:05:27.39 wicked behavior, we're financing all of this behavior that is 00:05:27.46\00:05:32.16 irresponsible, ungodly. 00:05:32.19\00:05:33.70 Yes, ungodly! And so, and they're making tons 00:05:33.73\00:05:37.33 of money off of it. 00:05:37.37\00:05:38.70 They're making tons of money off of it. 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.07 That's the thing, because it's probably being promoted, 00:05:40.10\00:05:43.37 you know, by get this, get that, get this, get that. 00:05:43.41\00:05:46.74 And people are going into debt just like people do 00:05:46.78\00:05:50.11 around Christmastime; going into debt for this one event. 00:05:50.15\00:05:54.88 And then you're just stuck with paying 2 to 300% interest. 00:05:54.92\00:05:59.72 That is crazy! And there's a vested interest 00:05:59.79\00:06:03.76 in keeping people poor. 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.39 Yes! They want to keep you poor, 00:06:06.43\00:06:09.40 because it's pricy to be poor, as long as they can continue to 00:06:09.43\00:06:12.53 just nickel and dime you with these fees. 00:06:12.57\00:06:14.34 They might not be making a lot of money off of you, 00:06:14.37\00:06:17.11 but if they can do this, what they're doing to an entire 00:06:17.14\00:06:19.81 community, then they're making miss. 00:06:19.84\00:06:21.74 We talked about last week. 00:06:21.78\00:06:23.18 In the check cashing facility we saw one we estimated makes 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.51 a half a million dollars a year just off fees alone 00:06:26.58\00:06:28.95 from cashing checks. 00:06:29.02\00:06:30.39 Not the produce, and the foods, and the bread and what not, 00:06:30.42\00:06:33.49 but they make a half million dollars a year 00:06:33.56\00:06:35.66 off of check cashing. 00:06:35.69\00:06:37.03 And this is because individuals, and most of them will say, 00:06:37.06\00:06:39.93 I just don't know any other way. 00:06:40.00\00:06:41.30 Why do you use a check cashing as opposed to using a bank? 00:06:41.33\00:06:44.07 I just don't know any other way. 00:06:44.13\00:06:45.60 So payday loans, check cashing places, title loans, 00:06:45.63\00:06:48.90 cash advances, Rent to Own, Rent to Rim, 00:06:48.94\00:06:51.17 prepaid debit cards, all of these type of establishments, 00:06:51.21\00:06:54.08 the prepaid debit card, check this out, Why do we find it 00:06:54.14\00:06:59.08 appropriate to spend money? 00:06:59.11\00:07:01.22 Okay now, we might pay money on a bottle of water. 00:07:01.25\00:07:04.39 So we're spending money for water. 00:07:04.42\00:07:05.82 Alright, we wish we wouldn't have to spend money on water. 00:07:05.85\00:07:08.52 But, hey, you might have to spend money on air nowadays. 00:07:08.56\00:07:11.16 Do you remember you used to go to the gas station and you'd get 00:07:11.19\00:07:12.83 your tire pumped up? 00:07:12.86\00:07:14.83 It used to be free. It used to be free. 00:07:14.83\00:07:16.40 But now you have to pay money for air. Right. 00:07:16.43\00:07:18.87 So what an oxymoron that is. 00:07:18.90\00:07:20.34 You have to... It's no longer free air any longer. 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.57 Okay. You're paying money for water. 00:07:22.60\00:07:24.11 You're paying money for air. 00:07:24.14\00:07:25.47 But now we've got to pay money for money. 00:07:25.51\00:07:27.41 Because the prepaid debit card is just money. 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.81 It's money transferred onto this vehicle, 00:07:29.84\00:07:32.21 which is another money essentially. 00:07:32.25\00:07:33.62 Put money on this card. 00:07:33.65\00:07:34.98 You pay money to put money on this card. 00:07:35.02\00:07:37.29 It doesn't build your credit. 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.92 It's not tied in to creditors. 00:07:38.99\00:07:40.59 And you spend it at various stores that accept 00:07:40.66\00:07:42.99 Visa and Master Card. 00:07:43.02\00:07:44.36 And they say, Well, this is the only way that we can use 00:07:44.39\00:07:45.73 to empower you, and we help your budget, and we help build 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.20 your credit, which is a lie. 00:07:48.23\00:07:49.56 They don't! And you spend money to use your own money, 00:07:49.60\00:07:52.90 which is the epitome of foolishness. 00:07:52.93\00:07:54.87 I'm just, my mouth is open because with the prepaid card, 00:07:54.90\00:07:59.51 what they're feeding you is really a lie. Right, exactly. 00:07:59.54\00:08:04.18 Because you're not... It's your money. 00:08:04.28\00:08:07.08 It's not a secured card. No, it's not. 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.88 It's a prepaid. Let's talk about the difference, because I think 00:08:09.92\00:08:12.75 people need to understand that this is... You can't build your 00:08:12.79\00:08:16.59 credit with a prepaid card. 00:08:16.62\00:08:18.63 So really, you get that card and you're 00:08:18.69\00:08:21.10 making somebody else rich. 00:08:21.13\00:08:22.53 Right. Well, I was very proud of I was able to help lead a 00:08:22.56\00:08:26.07 movement to make sure that Suzie Ormond's Approve card 00:08:26.10\00:08:28.64 was not successful. 00:08:28.67\00:08:30.01 And I have no problem with calling folks out. 00:08:30.04\00:08:31.71 I've called them out on CNN and FOX many times before. 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.41 And I'll continue to do so, because I do not like people 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.05 pimping on poor people. 00:08:37.08\00:08:38.41 We have to stop this. 00:08:38.45\00:08:39.78 We have to stop this exploitation. 00:08:39.81\00:08:41.15 But when Suze Orman came out with her Approved card, 00:08:41.18\00:08:44.12 I assumed that it was a secured card. 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.35 A secured card essentially is just that. 00:08:46.39\00:08:48.52 If I want to borrow some money from you, right? 00:08:48.56\00:08:53.19 And you give me, if I give you a $100, 00:08:53.23\00:08:57.77 and you put that $100 in your pocket, and then I say, Hey, 00:08:57.80\00:09:01.60 you know what, can I borrow another $100? 00:09:01.64\00:09:03.97 Now I gave you $100 of my money. 00:09:04.04\00:09:05.87 You put it in your pocket. 00:09:05.91\00:09:07.31 And then you give me 100 different dollars 00:09:07.34\00:09:10.28 that I can go and spend. 00:09:10.31\00:09:11.65 You'll feel comfortable doing that because you still have 00:09:11.68\00:09:14.75 my $100 in your pocket. Right. 00:09:14.78\00:09:16.72 And that's why, because you feel secure that that 00:09:16.75\00:09:19.02 money is in your pocket. Right. 00:09:19.05\00:09:20.39 That's what the bank is doing. 00:09:20.42\00:09:21.76 The bank is saying, I'll be happy to allow you to use this 00:09:21.79\00:09:25.03 credit card, but give me some money as collateral. 00:09:25.06\00:09:27.23 We'll take this money, $2, $300, $400, $500, put it into an 00:09:27.23\00:09:30.77 account, a secured account. 00:09:30.80\00:09:32.17 It becomes secure. Now you can use this card freely 00:09:32.20\00:09:35.74 up to the amount in which you've secured in the account. 00:09:35.77\00:09:38.31 And you can then, it's attached to it, but we have to ask. 00:09:38.34\00:09:40.91 We need to make sure that every time we get a secured card we 00:09:40.98\00:09:43.45 ask, Is this attached to a line of credit? 00:09:43.55\00:09:45.41 We should make sure that question is very clear. 00:09:45.45\00:09:47.02 Most banks will say yes, but there are a few banks that may 00:09:47.05\00:09:51.12 not be under the FDIC regulation, 00:09:51.15\00:09:53.25 or may be unregulated; that don't have a 00:09:53.29\00:09:55.59 secured line of credit. 00:09:55.62\00:09:57.53 Because using a secured card, if it's not attached to a line 00:09:57.56\00:09:59.86 of credit: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. 00:09:59.89\00:10:01.93 It's no point. There's no point. 00:10:01.96\00:10:03.77 So we want to make sure we ask the question, Is it secured? 00:10:03.83\00:10:06.57 Is it attached to a line of credit? 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.00 Because when I use a secured card and I pay it back, 00:10:08.04\00:10:10.91 we talked in another episode, 35% of your FICO Score, 00:10:10.94\00:10:13.78 paying your bills on time. 00:10:13.84\00:10:15.18 As you pay your bills on time, use a secured card, 00:10:15.21\00:10:17.78 it builds your credit. Right. 00:10:17.81\00:10:19.41 It builds a credit history. 00:10:19.45\00:10:21.02 It builds length of credit history. 00:10:21.05\00:10:22.38 It's 15% of your FICO Score. 00:10:22.42\00:10:24.32 30% of your FICO Score is your balance to 00:10:24.35\00:10:26.25 lending limit ratios. 00:10:26.29\00:10:27.62 So as you spend and pay back it also impacts your credit. 00:10:27.66\00:10:31.26 So all of these things... The secured card is a great way for 00:10:31.29\00:10:34.40 individuals who don't have a lot of... who have credit issues. 00:10:34.46\00:10:37.30 I urge all of them to go. 00:10:37.33\00:10:40.27 If you have credit issues go to a credit union. 00:10:40.30\00:10:42.77 Go to a bank that has a secured card access. 00:10:42.80\00:10:45.31 And please, just do the research. 00:10:45.34\00:10:47.34 On bankrate. com is a great site that gives a listing of 00:10:47.41\00:10:50.38 different secured cards. 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.91 I advocate for no fee secured cards. 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.65 But you might be able to know of a bank or relationship within 00:10:54.68\00:10:57.05 your area that might have one. 00:10:57.12\00:10:58.45 But the prepaid debit card is not that. 00:10:58.49\00:11:00.86 Where the secured card is attached to a line of credit, 00:11:00.89\00:11:03.16 the prepaid debit card, which I thought the approved card was, 00:11:03.19\00:11:07.10 was just like a prepaid debit card. 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.46 Fees attached to it. 00:11:08.50\00:11:09.90 Every time you use it you have to pay. 00:11:09.96\00:11:11.57 Putting money into an account. 00:11:11.60\00:11:14.20 You have to pay money if you have to pay a bill. 00:11:14.24\00:11:18.41 You pay a monthly fee, monthly maintenance fee. 00:11:18.44\00:11:20.58 If you lose it you have to pay to get it turned back on again. 00:11:20.64\00:11:23.85 Where like my debit card that I have 00:11:23.91\00:11:26.55 I've never paid any fees on. 00:11:26.58\00:11:28.28 It's a fee free card, because I've done the research. 00:11:28.32\00:11:32.15 I've learned about how to budget my account and make sure I have 00:11:32.19\00:11:35.42 enough money in my account. 00:11:35.46\00:11:36.79 And you can use that money for free. 00:11:36.83\00:11:38.16 With a prepaid debit card you have to pay. 00:11:38.19\00:11:40.00 So that's what... And so they'll say, the fees that they've 00:11:40.06\00:11:43.33 charged is not as much as the fees that the bank could charge. 00:11:43.40\00:11:46.67 And that's the key. 00:11:46.70\00:11:48.04 Because if you're using the bank wisely, you won't ever have to 00:11:48.07\00:11:51.07 pay any fees attached to them. 00:11:51.11\00:11:52.77 So these are some things that... 00:11:52.81\00:11:54.44 It frustrates me when we have this lack of knowledge. 00:11:54.48\00:11:58.21 Our people suffer for lack of knowledge. 00:11:58.25\00:12:00.22 And we talked about that in Hosea. 00:12:00.25\00:12:01.58 So we have to really understand and have wisdom with every 00:12:01.62\00:12:05.99 financial decision. 00:12:06.02\00:12:07.36 Because if we don't there's somebody out there who's 00:12:07.39\00:12:08.86 going to profit off of everything that we don't know. 00:12:08.89\00:12:11.03 Right. And I think again, we have to learn 00:12:11.06\00:12:15.26 to defer gratification. Yes. 00:12:15.30\00:12:17.53 You, you might say, I want a credit card. 00:12:17.57\00:12:20.20 I want it now. Well, if you don't have the money to have 00:12:20.24\00:12:22.94 a secured card, you get that money. 00:12:22.97\00:12:25.51 And then you have a secured card, and you work from there 00:12:25.54\00:12:30.41 instead of getting one of these celebrity linked prepaid debit 00:12:30.45\00:12:36.85 cards that are making them rich, and off of you, 00:12:36.89\00:12:40.22 because you're paying to use it. 00:12:40.26\00:12:41.86 Russell Simmons makes tons of money on his RushCard. 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.09 Suze Orman tried it, but failed at it with her Approved card. 00:12:44.13\00:12:46.80 Justin Bieber had the Believer card. 00:12:46.86\00:12:48.76 We called the Lil Wayne card the Ratchet card last week. 00:12:48.80\00:12:52.00 And I think... That just kills me. 00:12:52.03\00:12:54.47 It was, it is actually the Young Money card. 00:12:54.50\00:12:56.44 Uh huh. We have the Mango card. 00:12:56.47\00:12:58.14 It was George Lopez for those who are Hispanic. 00:12:58.17\00:13:00.48 We have the Reach card for Tom Joiner, for those in 00:13:00.51\00:13:04.08 the urban community. 00:13:04.15\00:13:05.48 We have the BET controlled card. 00:13:05.51\00:13:08.28 We have the... There's a few other different cards out there. 00:13:08.32\00:13:12.45 And the Kim Kardashian's card. 00:13:12.49\00:13:14.16 I forgot what her card, what their card was. 00:13:14.19\00:13:15.86 But that card didn't last that long. 00:13:15.89\00:13:17.53 A lot of folks, including myself, fought against that 00:13:17.56\00:13:20.70 introduction of that brand new card. 00:13:20.73\00:13:22.06 But those cards are not really sustainable because of the 00:13:22.10\00:13:24.90 public outlash; quite right. 00:13:24.93\00:13:26.70 Thank God that the public is now starting to say, Listen, we will 00:13:26.74\00:13:30.31 not take this exploitation any longer, 00:13:30.37\00:13:32.44 which I urge everyone to do. 00:13:32.47\00:13:33.88 Say, Listen, we don't want these products. 00:13:33.94\00:13:35.78 And this is great that you are speaking out 00:13:35.81\00:13:37.98 against these products. 00:13:38.01\00:13:39.35 But it's better, it's much, much better if we listens to the will 00:13:39.38\00:13:42.25 and the Spirit of God when He talks about it in His Word, 00:13:42.28\00:13:44.59 and implement the principles in our lives that makes these 00:13:44.62\00:13:48.56 products; whether it be prepaid debit, Rent a Center, 00:13:48.59\00:13:51.19 Rent to Own, Rent a Rim. Rent a Rim? 00:13:51.23\00:13:54.56 They're renting rims. 00:13:54.60\00:13:55.93 They're putting these rims on their cars. 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.80 And they have it in there spinning, 00:13:57.83\00:14:00.04 and they're spinning, and spinning. 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.27 And I said, What is this? 00:14:02.30\00:14:03.64 And they cost so much. 00:14:03.71\00:14:05.04 And you're going into debt. 00:14:05.07\00:14:06.91 You can't afford it. 00:14:07.01\00:14:08.34 And you're going deep into debt just to look good. 00:14:08.38\00:14:10.45 Yep, I mean it's not funny. 00:14:10.48\00:14:12.05 The image of it just kind of made me chuckle. 00:14:12.08\00:14:16.62 But it's not funny, 00:14:16.69\00:14:18.02 It's pathetic in that you can barely feed yourself or your 00:14:18.05\00:14:22.19 family, and you're renting rims. 00:14:22.22\00:14:24.16 It's like there's something wrong with that. 00:14:24.23\00:14:26.06 There's a disconnect here. 00:14:26.09\00:14:27.66 Our money... I mean our people suffer for lack of knowledge. 00:14:27.73\00:14:30.43 For lack of knowledge. 00:14:30.47\00:14:31.80 And we need it, and we need it. 00:14:31.83\00:14:33.17 So now I have a few stories to share for lottery. Yeah, yeah. 00:14:33.20\00:14:37.17 Now, again, because lottery is in the 00:14:37.21\00:14:38.91 70 billion dollar industry. 00:14:38.94\00:14:40.58 We talked about it last week. 00:14:40.64\00:14:41.98 People putting more faith in luck than people put in what 00:14:42.01\00:14:45.45 God has given them to be successful. 00:14:45.48\00:14:47.68 We have to get beyond this. 00:14:47.72\00:14:49.05 So a few stories, and I also want to quote a Scripture that I 00:14:49.08\00:14:52.35 think is just so pointed to... 00:14:52.39\00:14:53.76 See the word talks about everything. Everything! 00:14:53.82\00:14:57.39 There's nothing that the word does not cover. 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.86 So you see, for every dollar that's spent across the country 00:14:59.89\00:15:04.37 you get about a 67 cent return, okay? 00:15:04.40\00:15:07.57 So that means you lose 33 cents. 00:15:07.64\00:15:09.10 From the lottery? Yes. Okay. 00:15:09.14\00:15:10.51 So you spend a dollar. 00:15:10.54\00:15:11.87 You get back 67 cents. 00:15:11.91\00:15:13.98 You're losing 33 cents on every single dollar you spend. 00:15:14.01\00:15:16.95 So essentially you're giving money away. 00:15:16.98\00:15:18.78 And it's a great revenue industry for, you know, 00:15:18.81\00:15:21.98 for the different states. 00:15:22.02\00:15:23.72 And they make tons of money off of it. 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.22 And as the Powerball gets bigger and bigger, 00:15:25.25\00:15:27.26 people's hearts start dreaming about all the things they can 00:15:27.29\00:15:29.49 do with this Powerball. 00:15:29.52\00:15:30.86 Well, here's some winners of various lotteries. Oh, okay. 00:15:30.93\00:15:34.73 So William "Bud" Post, okay? 00:15:34.73\00:15:37.33 William "Bud" Post... And these are people you've never heard of 00:15:37.37\00:15:39.70 because they're broke. 00:15:39.73\00:15:41.07 So, but William "Bud" Post won 16.2 million dollars 00:15:41.10\00:15:47.24 in the Pennsylvania Lottery, but now lives entirely 00:15:47.28\00:15:49.54 on Social Security; blew all of it 1988. 00:15:49.58\00:15:52.15 1993 Suzanne Mullins won 4.2 million in the lottery. 00:15:52.18\00:15:56.35 But now she's deeply in debt to a company that lent her money 00:15:56.38\00:15:58.82 using the winnings and collateral. 00:15:58.85\00:16:00.39 Ken Proxmire was a machinist. 00:16:00.42\00:16:02.39 He won a million dollars in lottery. 00:16:02.42\00:16:04.19 He moved to California. 00:16:04.26\00:16:05.59 Went into the car business with his brothers. 00:16:05.63\00:16:06.96 Within five years he was totally bankrupt. 00:16:07.00\00:16:08.53 Willie Hurt of Lansing, 3.1 million in 1989, 00:16:08.56\00:16:12.53 3.1 million in lottery. 00:16:12.57\00:16:13.94 Two years later he was broke and charged with murder. 00:16:13.97\00:16:16.37 His lawyer says he spent his fortune on a 00:16:16.40\00:16:21.48 divorce and crack cocaine, okay? 00:16:21.51\00:16:23.78 Missourian, Janite Lee, 18 million dollars in 1993, 00:16:23.85\00:16:27.62 was generous, was giving her money away. 00:16:27.65\00:16:29.12 But according to published reports, eight years after 00:16:29.15\00:16:31.05 winning Lee had filed for bankruptcy, and only $700 left 00:16:31.09\00:16:34.56 in two bank accounts, okay? 00:16:34.59\00:16:36.32 So now you read all of that, right? 00:16:36.36\00:16:38.23 And you say, How can all these individuals 00:16:38.26\00:16:40.00 waste all this money? 00:16:40.03\00:16:41.33 But then you see what Proverbs 17:16 says. It says: 00:16:41.36\00:16:45.50 So the word is saying... 00:16:49.97\00:16:52.11 Now is that not a perfect verse? 00:16:52.14\00:16:53.74 Exactly! So the word is saying, You're chasing this money, 00:16:53.78\00:16:56.54 but you're chasing the wrong thing. 00:16:56.58\00:16:57.95 You need to be chasing wisdom, knowledge, understanding. 00:16:57.98\00:17:00.95 Because peace beyond all understanding. 00:17:00.98\00:17:02.68 You'll get peace. You'll get tranquility. 00:17:02.72\00:17:05.22 You'll get everything from just knowledge and wisdom, 00:17:05.25\00:17:07.39 which the word is encouraging us to go out and get. 00:17:07.42\00:17:10.06 But if you get the money first without the knowledge, 00:17:10.09\00:17:12.36 and understanding, you end up with charged with 00:17:12.39\00:17:15.10 murder, crack cocaine. 00:17:15.13\00:17:16.46 All of these evil things come just because we just 00:17:16.50\00:17:19.20 didn't understand it. Uh huh. 00:17:19.23\00:17:21.07 And with this, and I look at Luke 15:11-24 and I think it's 00:17:21.10\00:17:27.61 such a pointed verse, because to me it really just lays out 00:17:27.64\00:17:31.68 perfectly, and it says: And he said, There was a man who had 00:17:31.71\00:17:34.82 two sons, and the younger of them said to his father... 00:17:34.85\00:17:37.65 You know, and so this man has two sons. 00:17:37.69\00:17:39.62 So the youngest son, I'm just imagining him saying, 00:17:39.65\00:17:41.49 Hey, Pop, you know, and he says, Father, give me the share 00:17:41.52\00:17:44.96 of property that is coming to me. 00:17:44.99\00:17:46.49 So that younger son, you can just tell, 00:17:46.53\00:17:48.23 I just want the property. Right. 00:17:48.26\00:17:49.90 I'm owed this property. 00:17:49.93\00:17:51.27 I want this property. 00:17:51.30\00:17:52.63 And the father was compliant. 00:17:52.67\00:17:54.00 And he divided his property between them. 00:17:54.04\00:17:56.91 Not many days later the younger son gathered all he had and took 00:17:56.97\00:18:02.54 a journey into a far country, so the younger son 00:18:02.58\00:18:05.78 just wants this money. 00:18:05.81\00:18:07.15 He's asking for money, begging for money. 00:18:07.18\00:18:08.52 He gets the money, and gets the property, and he takes it and 00:18:08.55\00:18:10.92 he goes on a journey. 00:18:10.95\00:18:12.29 And there he squandered his property in 00:18:12.32\00:18:15.02 reckless living, okay? 00:18:15.06\00:18:16.66 And when he had spent everything a severe famine arose in that 00:18:16.69\00:18:20.76 country, and he began to be in need. 00:18:20.83\00:18:22.36 So now he was not prepared. 00:18:22.40\00:18:23.77 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that 00:18:23.80\00:18:27.24 country who sent him into his field to feed the pigs. 00:18:27.27\00:18:30.51 So here we have this son, and this is such a poignant story, 00:18:30.54\00:18:35.18 because it relates to every single story of people who won 00:18:35.21\00:18:38.61 the lottery, and squandered the money. 00:18:38.65\00:18:40.02 Most people who've won lotteries when they get the money they 00:18:40.05\00:18:42.22 squander it, because they have not been educated to save it. 00:18:42.25\00:18:44.55 So he goes out, he gets the money, squanders his money. 00:18:44.59\00:18:48.02 A famine hits; he's not prepared. 00:18:48.06\00:18:50.46 Because he should have been prepared. 00:18:50.53\00:18:51.86 Now he's from a wealthy family, a wealthy father 00:18:51.89\00:18:54.00 who gave him a legacy. 00:18:54.10\00:18:55.50 The father did what he had to do for him. 00:18:55.53\00:18:57.53 You know, it almost relates to what God is doing for us. 00:18:57.57\00:19:00.10 Absolutely. God is blessing us. 00:19:00.17\00:19:01.87 But because we're doing the wrong things, and squandering 00:19:01.90\00:19:04.24 things in reckless living, all of a sudden we're out here 00:19:04.27\00:19:06.74 feeding pigs and thinking, Well, how come 00:19:06.81\00:19:08.64 I didn't... I want more. 00:19:08.68\00:19:10.51 There's more in store for me than feeding pigs. 00:19:10.58\00:19:13.05 Then why did you squander the blessings 00:19:13.08\00:19:14.72 that God has given you? 00:19:14.75\00:19:16.08 So we have to ask these questions to ourselves. 00:19:16.12\00:19:18.59 If the young boy had just said, Well, you know what, as opposed 00:19:18.62\00:19:21.36 to chasing the gold, let me chase for knowledge and wisdom. 00:19:21.39\00:19:23.56 Uh huh. And then when he received the blessings from 00:19:23.59\00:19:25.69 his father he'd have been able to more prepared to go out. 00:19:25.73\00:19:28.66 And when the famine hit he'd be prepared. 00:19:28.70\00:19:30.87 He'd have his land. 00:19:30.90\00:19:32.23 He'd have everything laid out. 00:19:32.27\00:19:33.77 And this is what's happening with all these lottery winners. 00:19:33.84\00:19:35.90 and individuals who take out Payday loans, 00:19:35.94\00:19:38.14 who don't budget responsibly. 00:19:38.17\00:19:40.28 And individuals are exploiting them and making sure that again, 00:19:40.31\00:19:43.55 it's expensive to be very poor. 00:19:43.58\00:19:45.35 And it keeps you in that place. Right. 00:19:45.38\00:19:48.92 Because you can't... You're trying to do the 00:19:48.95\00:19:51.32 get rich quick thing. Exactly. 00:19:51.35\00:19:53.05 But you can't get past a certain place. 00:19:53.12\00:19:56.86 And so you just stop. 00:19:56.93\00:19:58.39 You feel stuck. And this is in no way condemning you. 00:19:58.43\00:20:03.63 This is really, this program is to offer you a way out. It is. 00:20:03.67\00:20:07.40 To give you the tools to get out from under the exploiters... 00:20:07.44\00:20:11.91 Right, exactly... the predators. 00:20:11.94\00:20:14.08 I mean people are making money pimping the poor. 00:20:14.14\00:20:17.51 That's really the bottom line. 00:20:17.55\00:20:20.08 I have a little exam for you. 00:20:20.12\00:20:23.25 Okay. Okay? Oh my goodness! 00:20:23.28\00:20:25.25 So this is the exam. Alright. 00:20:25.29\00:20:26.62 And so my name is now... 00:20:26.65\00:20:28.46 And we haven't prepared for this, right? 00:20:28.49\00:20:30.39 Just so they know. No, I, I no. 00:20:30.43\00:20:31.86 And they will see I haven't prepared. 00:20:31.89\00:20:34.13 We haven't prepared for this exam. 00:20:34.20\00:20:35.70 We haven't tested anything. 00:20:35.73\00:20:37.63 You don't know what I'm about to ask you at all? No. 00:20:37.67\00:20:40.30 Okay. So now, my name is no longer Ryan Mack. 00:20:40.37\00:20:43.04 My name is Ryan Mr. Conman, okay? Okay. 00:20:43.07\00:20:45.94 So my name is Mr. Conman, and I want to sell you 00:20:45.97\00:20:49.78 some life insurance. Okay. 00:20:49.81\00:20:51.88 So you're in my office, okay? 00:20:51.91\00:20:54.55 So I'm going to ask you some questions. Okay. 00:20:54.58\00:20:56.48 So just answer them honestly. Okay. 00:20:56.52\00:21:00.19 Is it important for you to leave a legacy for your family? Yes. 00:21:00.26\00:21:05.96 Okay. She said yes to that. 00:21:05.99\00:21:08.13 If you could leave a million dollars to your family, 00:21:08.16\00:21:15.17 would that be a good thing? Yeah! 00:21:15.20\00:21:18.27 Okay, that would be a great thing. Yeah, it would. 00:21:18.31\00:21:20.14 Okay. Do you think that it would be wise to make sure that 00:21:20.18\00:21:27.82 you're educated about all the ways to be able to leave money 00:21:27.85\00:21:32.39 to your family. Oh yeah! 00:21:32.42\00:21:34.29 That would be yes, right. Umhum. Okay. 00:21:34.32\00:21:36.29 So now we're in my office, I have this life insurance policy 00:21:36.32\00:21:39.69 and in this life insurance policy, I want you to sign it, 00:21:41.53\00:21:43.80 and I want you to get a million dollars' worth of life insurance 00:21:43.83\00:21:47.00 coverage. Can you sign it for me? 00:21:47.07\00:21:50.54 Now, are you asking me? I'm asking you. 00:21:50.57\00:21:54.44 I can't sign it unless I read it. 00:21:54.48\00:21:56.38 Ok, so let's say you read it. It's a good question. 00:21:56.41\00:21:58.88 Ok, so you passed the first test. Um hum. 00:21:58.91\00:22:01.05 So now you've read it and you've seen, it all checks out 00:22:01.08\00:22:05.82 I have the highest rating of any insurance agency 00:22:05.92\00:22:08.36 in the world. Hmm! And I'm the best insurance company 00:22:08.39\00:22:11.43 in the whole wide world. 00:22:11.46\00:22:12.79 And you see it and you say, ok now, and it all checks out 00:22:12.83\00:22:16.16 If you pass away, all your family gets a million dollars. 00:22:16.20\00:22:21.74 Ok. Do you sign it now? 00:22:21.77\00:22:24.27 Okay. NO. No, okay. 00:22:24.31\00:22:31.05 So, are you worried about the cost? 00:22:31.08\00:22:33.11 Well, how much is it going to cost? Okay. 00:22:33.15\00:22:36.75 Like what...And then to just... to sign it right then? 00:22:36.79\00:22:42.69 Um hum. Oh, I need to think about it. 00:22:42.72\00:22:45.33 Good answer. Well you just passed the test. 00:22:45.36\00:22:47.36 I did. Okay. Just passed the test. 00:22:47.40\00:22:48.96 Good. Cause the thing is this, the questions that I asked you, 00:22:49.00\00:22:52.43 and I did this for a reason. Check cashing, cash advances, 00:22:52.47\00:22:56.74 title loans, payday loans, rent a rim, rent to own, 00:22:56.77\00:22:59.31 rent a weave stores. 00:22:59.34\00:23:00.78 All these are financial predators that we know about 00:23:00.81\00:23:02.64 but there are many individuals within various industries 00:23:02.68\00:23:05.28 that are totally good industries, insurance, 00:23:05.31\00:23:07.75 real estate, but because they are intent is wrong, 00:23:07.78\00:23:10.79 they could also be predators as well. 00:23:10.82\00:23:12.39 Mmm. So what I just asked you was just something I hope that 00:23:12.42\00:23:15.62 we individuals have learned. 00:23:15.66\00:23:17.03 My job is to get you to just say yes. 00:23:17.06\00:23:19.36 Yeah. All of the questions were yes questions. 00:23:19.39\00:23:23.16 Yes questions. And now I want you to be very... 00:23:23.20\00:23:24.97 and so if you said...if you asked me about the costs, 00:23:25.00\00:23:27.60 my response is, "does it matter"? 00:23:27.64\00:23:29.80 Can you leave a price on leaving a legacy for your family? 00:23:29.84\00:23:32.47 So it's always...these are tricks and ploys, 00:23:32.51\00:23:35.98 that I just hope the viewers out there become familiar with. 00:23:36.01\00:23:39.18 Right. Because what you said was perfect. 00:23:39.21\00:23:41.18 I need some time to go home and think about it. 00:23:41.22\00:23:43.95 I need some time to go and read this over. 00:23:43.99\00:23:46.42 That's the way we are supposed to respond. 00:23:46.45\00:23:48.52 I mean, there are certain things you are never supposed 00:23:48.56\00:23:50.03 to be afraid to say. 00:23:50.09\00:23:51.43 I need some help. I was wrong. I apologize. 00:23:51.46\00:23:54.13 I mean all of these are things we should never even... 00:23:54.20\00:23:56.60 and I need some time to ponder this over, so before you sign 00:23:56.63\00:23:59.50 anything, before any of these predators...take some time 00:23:59.53\00:24:02.30 and go over...ponder these over and get some guidance, 00:24:02.34\00:24:05.44 what the Word says from counselors and we will be fine. 00:24:05.47\00:24:08.61 This is some rich stuff, I am glad that I kind of 00:24:08.64\00:24:12.95 passed the test too. Absolutely. 00:24:12.98\00:24:14.48 I know you have a serious take away for us today. 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.89 Let's go to it. Right. 00:24:16.92\00:24:18.25 Humbly, I would like to speak to those who are poor. 00:24:24.76\00:24:29.00 There are many plagues within poverty, but five of them 00:24:29.03\00:24:32.77 I have often encountered in my work are: 00:24:32.80\00:24:35.30 Guilt, Shame, Worrying, Fear, and Low Self Esteem. 00:24:35.34\00:24:40.84 Let's talk about guilt. Romans 8:1 says: 00:24:40.88\00:24:44.88 "There is therefore now, no condemnation for those 00:24:44.91\00:24:47.98 who are in Christ Jesus". If you are in Christ, 00:24:48.02\00:24:51.42 whatever happened in the past, is the past. 00:24:51.45\00:24:54.56 I need you to eliminate all worry about who you were, 00:24:54.59\00:24:58.09 what mistakes you may have made and any important decisions 00:24:58.13\00:25:01.96 you have made to get to where you are today. 00:25:02.00\00:25:04.30 Remove this yoke of guilt from around your neck 00:25:04.33\00:25:07.44 and feel free to embrace the greatness God has put 00:25:07.47\00:25:10.21 within you, starting right now. 00:25:10.24\00:25:12.57 Let's talk about shame. Palm 34:45 says: 00:25:12.61\00:25:17.85 "Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall 00:25:17.88\00:25:21.62 never be ashamed." 00:25:21.65\00:25:23.12 If you are following Jesus Christ, you have no reason 00:25:23.15\00:25:26.52 to be ashamed. 00:25:26.55\00:25:27.89 There are many who share your circumstances, 00:25:27.92\00:25:30.23 and some even worse, the only time you have permission to feel 00:25:30.26\00:25:34.20 ashamed is if you lose all hope, and stop trying to improve 00:25:34.20\00:25:38.30 your current situation, only quitters should feel ashamed, 00:25:38.33\00:25:42.07 and in Jesus Christ, there is no need for quitting. 00:25:42.10\00:25:44.61 Quitting is the epitome of selfishness because 00:25:44.64\00:25:46.88 you are not only robbing yourself of success, 00:25:46.94\00:25:49.08 but you are robbing others of the blessings you will be 00:25:49.11\00:25:51.61 able to generate through Christ, through hard work 00:25:51.65\00:25:54.12 and persistence. 00:25:54.18\00:25:55.52 Let's talk about worrying. I Peter 5:7 says: 00:25:55.55\00:26:00.99 "Cast all of your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you." 00:26:01.02\00:26:04.26 Although it can be hard to stop worrying, I'll admit, 00:26:04.29\00:26:07.46 understanding that worrying results in no tangible 00:26:07.50\00:26:11.20 forward momentum. 00:26:11.23\00:26:12.57 Worrying is only successful at causing ulcers. 00:26:12.60\00:26:15.94 Take your worries to the Lord and leave them right there. 00:26:15.97\00:26:19.91 Now let's talk about fear. II Timothy 1:7 said: 00:26:19.94\00:26:24.95 "For God gave a Spirit not of fear, but of power and love 00:26:24.98\00:26:29.12 and self-control." 00:26:29.15\00:26:31.32 Exchange this dose of fear for a double dose of faith. 00:26:31.35\00:26:35.72 Fear only inhibits your ability to be productive. 00:26:35.76\00:26:39.06 With fear, you will find that you are continuously 00:26:39.09\00:26:42.50 taking yourself out of performing viable solutions 00:26:42.53\00:26:45.20 for your situation because of fear of failure. 00:26:45.23\00:26:47.50 Faith in God enables you to put forth maximum effort 00:26:47.54\00:26:51.51 in any tough situation. 00:26:51.54\00:26:53.14 Let's talk about low self esteem. Psalm 20:8 says: 00:26:53.17\00:26:58.85 "They collapse and fall, but we, we rise and stand upright." 00:26:58.88\00:27:03.55 Philippines 4:13 says: "I can do all things through Christ 00:27:03.62\00:27:08.52 who strengthens me." 00:27:08.56\00:27:10.06 Your self-esteem may be low, but your God esteem, 00:27:10.09\00:27:13.96 that should always be high. 00:27:14.00\00:27:15.80 Check your pulse right now. Do you feel something? 00:27:15.83\00:27:20.67 If you still feel a pulse, you still have a purpose 00:27:20.74\00:27:25.41 on this world. The world needs you to fulfill that purpose. 00:27:25.44\00:27:30.05 It doesn't matter what your bank account says, 00:27:30.08\00:27:32.45 you have been crowned in God's favor. 00:27:32.48\00:27:34.75 It may feel like society has cast you aside, 00:27:34.78\00:27:38.02 but the Lord our God, will never leave you 00:27:38.05\00:27:41.22 nor forsake you. 00:27:41.26\00:27:42.59 This is the day the Lord has made for you, 00:27:42.62\00:27:45.29 so I dare you to be as great as the dreams 00:27:45.33\00:27:48.20 that God has given you. 00:27:48.23\00:27:49.80 As always, if Dollars and Sense can help you, 00:27:49.86\00:27:53.10 please email me at: dollarsandsense@3abn.org 00:27:53.13\00:27:56.40 or have a chat with us on the Dare 2 Dream Network 00:27:56.44\00:27:59.44 Facebook page. 00:27:59.47\00:28:00.91 Until next time, be the change you want to see 00:28:00.94\00:28:03.18 and remember the purpose of life, is a life of purpose. 00:28:03.21\00:28:06.15 Be Blessed! 00:28:06.18\00:28:07.55
