Music... 00:00:02.00\00:00:25.79 Hello, and welcome once again to Daniel All Access... 00:00:25.82\00:00:28.59 our walk through the book of Daniel 00:00:28.62\00:00:31.33 as we seek to answer the question "what" 00:00:31.36\00:00:34.83 but also the question "why" 00:00:34.86\00:00:36.30 as we seek to dig a little deeper in the book of Daniel 00:00:36.33\00:00:40.34 and to see what truths it has for the modern-day Church. 00:00:40.37\00:00:44.17 Daniel is indeed a book of prophecy 00:00:44.21\00:00:46.88 but there is much that it has to say to God's people 00:00:46.91\00:00:50.48 in their walk to the kingdom of God 00:00:50.55\00:00:53.01 so we welcome you, those here in our house 00:00:53.05\00:00:55.55 and those of you watching and listening 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.72 from around the world, 00:00:57.75\00:00:59.22 we welcome you to Daniel All Access 00:00:59.25\00:01:01.09 as today we take a look at Daniel chapter 8 00:01:01.12\00:01:04.99 and so, I'd ask you to open your Bibles to Daniel chapter 8 00:01:05.03\00:01:08.56 as we speak on the subject: A Personal Problem... 00:01:08.60\00:01:13.57 A Personal Problem. 00:01:13.60\00:01:16.20 Daniel chapter 8... 00:01:16.27\00:01:18.81 we will not take time to read the entire book 00:01:18.84\00:01:22.51 or rather the entire chapter... 00:01:22.54\00:01:24.45 that would take too much of our time 00:01:24.48\00:01:26.61 so we ask you to... 00:01:26.65\00:01:28.92 when you're home and in your sanguine moments 00:01:28.95\00:01:31.79 to go over the book of Daniel... and particularly Daniel 8 00:01:31.85\00:01:35.46 for it has much to say to us today. 00:01:35.49\00:01:38.86 Going to ask you now to bow your heads with me 00:01:38.89\00:01:41.00 in a word of prayer 00:01:41.06\00:01:42.40 just before we launch out in this most fascinating 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.30 portion of the book of Daniel. 00:01:45.33\00:01:48.47 "Father God, again we thank you and praise you 00:01:48.50\00:01:52.47 because you are such a good God. 00:01:52.54\00:01:54.24 We thank you and praise you that you have given us your Word 00:01:54.28\00:01:58.41 and that you honor and exalt that Word. 00:01:58.45\00:02:03.45 We ask you now Father to give us your Holy Spirit 00:02:03.49\00:02:06.89 that we may know and understand 00:02:06.92\00:02:09.89 because spiritual things are spiritually discerned 00:02:09.92\00:02:13.36 so give us the discernment 00:02:13.40\00:02:15.76 that comes from the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, 00:02:15.83\00:02:18.40 help us to see... to know... 00:02:18.43\00:02:21.04 to understand your will for our lives 00:02:21.07\00:02:23.54 and then by that same Spirit, 00:02:23.57\00:02:26.37 give us the strength to do that which we know is right, 00:02:26.41\00:02:31.01 aid us in our study we do pray, 00:02:31.05\00:02:34.02 in Jesus' name, amen. " 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.38 Daniel chapter 8... 00:02:36.42\00:02:38.65 two years after the vision of Daniel chapter 7, 00:02:38.69\00:02:43.49 Daniel now is in a city somewhat north... northeast 00:02:43.53\00:02:48.26 of the capital of Babylon. 00:02:48.30\00:02:50.93 It is the provincial capital of Shushan. 00:02:50.97\00:02:55.87 Pause. 00:02:55.90\00:02:57.31 Here God gives Daniel another vision. 00:02:57.34\00:03:01.81 Again, it fills in additional information 00:03:01.84\00:03:06.31 in the prophetic landscape. 00:03:06.35\00:03:11.09 You might rightly say... this is the same material 00:03:11.12\00:03:15.99 covered in Daniels chapter 2 and 7 00:03:16.02\00:03:19.39 and you would be right, 00:03:19.43\00:03:20.83 but remember the secret of understanding Daniel 00:03:20.86\00:03:24.67 is that every time he re-traces his footsteps 00:03:24.70\00:03:28.24 and goes over the same prophetic material, 00:03:28.30\00:03:31.57 you will find that Daniel repeats and enlarges, 00:03:31.61\00:03:37.68 he repeats and enlarges 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.78 and if you learn nothing else about the book of Daniel, 00:03:39.81\00:03:42.48 you'll hear this just about every night... 00:03:42.52\00:03:45.65 repeat and enlarge... repeat and enlarge 00:03:45.69\00:03:48.76 so, whenever you see the same material covered, 00:03:48.79\00:03:51.43 know that you're going to get more information 00:03:51.46\00:03:54.06 than you got... 00:03:54.10\00:03:55.43 when last time you went over that same material, 00:03:55.46\00:03:57.57 he repeats and he enlarges... 00:03:57.60\00:03:59.63 that's the secret... repeat and enlarge. 00:03:59.67\00:04:02.80 When he recaps his information, he always recaps the explanation 00:04:02.84\00:04:10.38 not necessarily... the prophecy 00:04:10.41\00:04:12.91 so, this "repeat and enlarge" motif means 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.72 you're going to get a deeper explanation... 00:04:15.75\00:04:18.35 you're going to get more valuable information 00:04:18.39\00:04:21.82 that you can use to unravel the original prophecy. 00:04:21.86\00:04:25.09 Now, when we get to chapter 8, 00:04:25.13\00:04:27.76 two things jump out at you right away. 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.20 They are immediately apparent, 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.63 two things at least and actually there are a couple more 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.87 but there are a couple of things we want to highlight, 00:04:34.90\00:04:37.11 number one, in Daniel chapter 7, 00:04:37.14\00:04:41.04 the succession of Empires is symbolized... 00:04:41.08\00:04:45.18 and we talked about this when we met previously 00:04:45.21\00:04:47.92 by what I call, "The Alpha Predators. " 00:04:47.95\00:04:50.75 In other words, the lion, the bear, the leopard 00:04:50.79\00:04:54.59 and the incomparable iron-teeth beast... 00:04:54.62\00:04:57.09 these are all carnivores, 00:04:57.13\00:05:00.20 these are all meat eaters, so, 00:05:00.23\00:05:02.73 the Empires in Daniel chapter 7 are symbolized by meat eaters 00:05:02.76\00:05:08.67 alpha predators... 00:05:08.70\00:05:10.04 in fact, I was teasing my wife, 00:05:10.07\00:05:12.51 we were talking on the phone last night 00:05:12.54\00:05:13.88 and I was saying that... that bear actually likes ribs, 00:05:13.91\00:05:17.91 he's got three of them still in his mouth 00:05:17.95\00:05:19.28 so he really is an alpha predator. 00:05:19.31\00:05:22.22 But when we get to Daniel chapter 8, 00:05:22.25\00:05:25.15 we see some different things, 00:05:25.19\00:05:26.69 number one... there's no Babylon... 00:05:26.72\00:05:28.36 the vision in Daniel chapter 8 begins with Medo-Persia 00:05:28.39\00:05:32.73 and there is a reason for that, I believe. 00:05:32.76\00:05:36.16 You'll recall that the vision was given in the second year, 00:05:36.20\00:05:42.34 the Bible says, of Belshazzar. 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.41 You've got to remember, 00:05:44.44\00:05:45.87 Belshazzar didn't reign very, very long. 00:05:45.94\00:05:49.74 We suspect about ten to twelve years maximum 00:05:49.78\00:05:54.35 but here's what's interesting and really quite fascinating. 00:05:54.38\00:05:56.75 Pause. 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.39 Any history book you look at... you can google it... 00:05:58.42\00:06:02.99 You will find that no history books say that Belshazzar 00:06:03.02\00:06:07.56 was the final king of Babylon. 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.93 You will not find it... turn on your computer... 00:06:09.96\00:06:12.43 google it... do what you want... 00:06:12.47\00:06:14.07 go to your history books... 00:06:14.10\00:06:15.50 they all say that the last king of Babylon was Nabonidus 00:06:15.54\00:06:20.18 or Naboneedus 00:06:20.21\00:06:21.54 potato... potaata... however you want to pronounce it, 00:06:21.58\00:06:23.51 the only place you find Belshazzar 00:06:23.55\00:06:28.22 as the last king of Babylon, is in the Bible 00:06:28.25\00:06:31.09 and one or two other minor references 00:06:31.12\00:06:33.86 but all of the major references say 00:06:33.89\00:06:36.52 that the last king of Babylon was Nabonidus 00:06:36.56\00:06:40.70 so, history says, "Nabonidus" 00:06:40.73\00:06:43.93 the Bible says, "Belshazzar" 00:06:43.97\00:06:47.10 who is right? 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.50 Pause. 00:06:48.54\00:06:49.94 They both are... 00:06:49.97\00:06:51.84 they both are. 00:06:51.87\00:06:53.21 They were co-rulers... 00:06:53.24\00:06:56.95 and the Bible gives some inkling of that 00:06:56.98\00:07:00.48 during the last night of the kingdom 00:07:00.52\00:07:03.92 when Belshazzar promises to make Daniel third in the Kingdom 00:07:03.99\00:07:07.06 but here's what is very, very interesting, 00:07:07.09\00:07:09.12 the actual king of Babylon was indeed Nabonidus. 00:07:09.16\00:07:14.40 Belshazzar was the co-ruler 00:07:14.43\00:07:17.83 but there's something very interesting 00:07:17.87\00:07:20.60 about "Naboneedus" or Nabonidus... 00:07:20.64\00:07:23.30 though he was the king, he never lived in Babylon. 00:07:23.34\00:07:28.84 This is quite interesting, once he became king, 00:07:28.88\00:07:34.35 he left the city of Babylon and he never returned... 00:07:34.38\00:07:40.12 never went back. 00:07:40.16\00:07:41.96 Now, you may think, 00:07:41.99\00:07:43.73 maybe he doesn't like the big city, 00:07:43.76\00:07:45.09 maybe he likes country life 00:07:45.13\00:07:46.46 but it's a little deeper than that 00:07:46.49\00:07:48.13 because Nabonidus found himself on the Anatolian Peninsula 00:07:48.16\00:07:53.23 when we talk about the Anatolian Peninsula 00:07:53.27\00:07:54.80 or the Anatolian Plateau, 00:07:54.84\00:07:56.81 we're talking about modern-day Turkey. 00:07:56.84\00:07:58.77 He took up residence in a small town called Tema 00:07:58.81\00:08:03.08 and he lived there... the rest of his life, 00:08:03.14\00:08:06.08 he never went back to Babylon. 00:08:06.11\00:08:09.78 Why? 00:08:09.82\00:08:12.05 Now, here's what's very, very interesting. 00:08:12.09\00:08:14.76 Evidently, history tells us that Nabonidus had found himself 00:08:14.79\00:08:24.53 a new god. 00:08:24.60\00:08:26.70 Now, the god of Babylon... the principal god... 00:08:26.74\00:08:32.37 the head of the pantheon of gods 00:08:32.44\00:08:34.44 was a god they called Marduk. 00:08:34.48\00:08:36.41 Marduk was the chief god of Babylon for hundreds of years. 00:08:36.44\00:08:40.98 Nabonidus evidently found a new god 00:08:41.02\00:08:45.32 that made him uncomfortable in the city of Babylon 00:08:45.35\00:08:49.56 and here's why. 00:08:49.59\00:08:51.49 Every year... once a year... 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.19 the god, Marduk, had to be worshipped by the people, 00:08:53.23\00:08:58.97 the festival took one or two weeks. 00:08:59.03\00:09:01.50 Several specific things had to happen 00:09:01.54\00:09:04.14 that I feel made it uncomfortable 00:09:04.17\00:09:06.74 for Nabonidus to be there. 00:09:06.78\00:09:08.11 Here's one. 00:09:08.14\00:09:09.48 On the fifth day of the festival this is interesting 00:09:09.51\00:09:14.95 the high priest of Marduk went before the king... 00:09:14.98\00:09:20.66 before all of the people... 00:09:20.69\00:09:23.36 he stripped the king of his crown 00:09:23.39\00:09:27.86 and his outer garment 00:09:27.90\00:09:30.53 and then he, in the name of Marduk, 00:09:30.57\00:09:33.97 slapped the king as hard as he could... 00:09:34.00\00:09:36.81 I mean, he knocked him to the ground. 00:09:36.84\00:09:39.57 It's part of the festival 00:09:39.61\00:09:40.94 and it was a sign of humility before the god, Marduk. 00:09:40.98\00:09:47.32 On day eight of that festival, 00:09:47.35\00:09:50.62 the king was responsible to lead the nation in prayers 00:09:50.65\00:09:56.83 that every other god had to be subject to Marduk. 00:09:56.86\00:10:01.43 Pause. 00:10:01.46\00:10:02.80 So, if indeed, Nabonidus had found a new god, 00:10:02.83\00:10:08.07 there was no way he could participate 00:10:08.10\00:10:10.77 in those kinds of ceremonies. 00:10:10.81\00:10:12.34 Pause. 00:10:12.37\00:10:13.71 Here is my conjecture and it is just my conjecture. 00:10:13.74\00:10:16.88 Could it be that this new god that Nabonidus found 00:10:16.91\00:10:24.95 was the same god 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.26 that his father, Nebuchadnezzar, found? 00:10:27.29\00:10:29.99 The Bible does not say it, Ellen White is silent on it 00:10:30.03\00:10:34.10 but history does say that once he became king, 00:10:34.13\00:10:37.63 he left the city of Babylon 00:10:37.67\00:10:39.93 and he never went back... 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.10 never went back... 00:10:42.14\00:10:43.61 he residented himself on the Anatolian Peninsula 00:10:43.64\00:10:49.91 west if Babylon in a little town called Tema 00:10:49.94\00:10:53.48 and he stayed there till he died. 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.52 If indeed, he had found Jehovah God, 00:10:56.55\00:10:59.45 he could not participate in good conscience 00:10:59.49\00:11:02.79 in those services for the God, Marduk. 00:11:02.82\00:11:05.56 He certainly could not bow down to him... 00:11:05.59\00:11:08.23 he certainly could not have other gods pray to him 00:11:08.26\00:11:12.03 and lead the people... we don't know... 00:11:12.10\00:11:14.57 but it is an interesting little wrinkle... 00:11:14.60\00:11:17.04 there are books called, 00:11:17.07\00:11:18.41 "The Disappearing Years of Nabonidus" 00:11:18.44\00:11:21.24 for ten years plus he never went back to Babylon 00:11:21.28\00:11:27.25 and we never hear anything about him... 00:11:27.28\00:11:30.62 he went off by himself to worship His new god. 00:11:30.65\00:11:35.22 Now, some people say 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.26 the name of the new god was Sīn... 00:11:37.29\00:11:39.59 and there are pictures of him worshipping this god 00:11:39.66\00:11:44.17 who is depicted as the moon 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.50 but not all pictures. 00:11:46.53\00:11:48.44 Some of the pictures 00:11:48.50\00:11:50.34 show him worshipping a God that he cannot see. 00:11:50.37\00:11:55.41 Wouldn't it be interesting 00:11:55.44\00:11:58.31 if, when we are walking down the streets of gold 00:11:58.35\00:12:01.65 and we see Nebuchadnezzar... 00:12:01.68\00:12:04.25 then we see a good-looking young man walking next to him 00:12:04.29\00:12:07.92 that was Nabonidus. 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.56 Maybe that God that he found that kept him out of the city 00:12:09.59\00:12:12.39 and out of that wickedness 00:12:12.43\00:12:14.13 was the same God that Nebuchadnezzar found. 00:12:14.16\00:12:16.63 It's a fascinating thought. 00:12:16.67\00:12:18.47 Now, here's the last thing 00:12:18.50\00:12:20.20 that sort of brings this all together. 00:12:20.24\00:12:23.37 When the city of Babylon was taken, 00:12:23.41\00:12:26.44 Belshazzar... as we discussed the other night, 00:12:26.47\00:12:30.65 was killed when the Medo-Persians came in 00:12:30.68\00:12:33.88 but history tells us that Nabonidus was left alone. 00:12:33.92\00:12:40.16 He died peacefully of old age in his bed. 00:12:40.19\00:12:44.63 He was left free. 00:12:44.66\00:12:46.80 Now, isn't that interesting? 00:12:46.83\00:12:49.06 Why is Belshazzar killed 00:12:49.10\00:12:51.23 the night the Babylonians are defeated by the Medo-Persians 00:12:51.27\00:12:55.10 and the real king, Nabonidus, 00:12:55.14\00:12:57.84 is left alone to live out his days in relative peace? 00:12:57.87\00:13:01.21 Could it be that God was looking out for him 00:13:01.24\00:13:04.61 like He looked out for his dad? 00:13:04.65\00:13:06.98 It's a tantalizing thought, it is all speculation 00:13:07.02\00:13:10.49 but it is true that he left the city 00:13:10.52\00:13:13.36 and he never went back and history tells us 00:13:13.39\00:13:16.52 he had found a new God. 00:13:16.56\00:13:18.09 Maybe the new God was the God 00:13:18.13\00:13:20.63 and when I get to heaven 00:13:20.66\00:13:23.06 that's one of the questions I want to ask. 00:13:23.10\00:13:24.43 What happened during those ten years 00:13:24.50\00:13:26.33 when he was away by himself on the Anatolian Peninsula. 00:13:26.37\00:13:31.64 Kind of exciting stuff and it fills in 00:13:31.67\00:13:35.41 a little part of this prophetic scenario. 00:13:35.44\00:13:39.11 Pause. 00:13:39.15\00:13:40.78 So, the Medo-Persians took over the Empire... 00:13:40.82\00:13:43.82 Belshazzar is slain... the real king is left alive 00:13:43.89\00:13:48.09 and so the Bible deals with 00:13:48.12\00:13:51.06 the person who was actually in the chair 00:13:51.09\00:13:53.93 making the day-to-day decisions. 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.96 Nabonidus is off in the desert, 00:13:56.00\00:13:57.90 so the Bible doesn't deal with him, 00:13:57.93\00:13:59.43 he wasn't making the decisions, 00:13:59.47\00:14:00.90 the decision that brought the kingdom to its knees 00:14:00.94\00:14:04.77 was the decisions made by Belshazzar 00:14:04.81\00:14:07.94 and that's why the Bible deals with Belshazzar as king 00:14:07.98\00:14:10.68 and not Nabonidus. 00:14:10.71\00:14:12.05 Doesn't matter who has the title, 00:14:12.08\00:14:13.42 the Bible wants to deal with the person 00:14:13.45\00:14:14.92 who is actually making the decisions, you follow me... 00:14:14.95\00:14:16.89 and that's why the Bible says, Belshazzar. 00:14:16.95\00:14:18.59 So, they're both right, 00:14:18.62\00:14:19.95 history is correct and the Bible certainly is correct too 00:14:19.99\00:14:22.29 because it points the finger at Belshazzar. 00:14:22.32\00:14:24.89 Now, Babylon was history 00:14:24.96\00:14:29.63 and that's why you don't see Babylon in this new vision. 00:14:29.66\00:14:33.97 Babylon was only a few years away from destruction 00:14:34.04\00:14:37.21 so, rather than deal with Babylon, 00:14:37.27\00:14:39.47 this new vision starts with Medo-Persia. 00:14:39.51\00:14:43.21 We read about that and we talked about that 00:14:43.24\00:14:46.92 they were found wanting 00:14:46.95\00:14:48.28 and so, Babylon was history Medo-Persia is now the future. 00:14:48.32\00:14:52.02 Now, there's one more thing that is rather interesting, 00:14:52.05\00:14:55.96 which sort of leaps out at you. 00:14:55.99\00:14:59.29 In our discussion of chapter 7, 00:14:59.33\00:15:02.56 we saw the alpha predators 00:15:02.60\00:15:06.80 lions, leopards, bears and iron-teeth beast... 00:15:06.84\00:15:13.21 in chapter 8, the beast now or the kingdoms now 00:15:13.24\00:15:18.35 are represented by beasts that are herbivores, 00:15:18.38\00:15:23.45 they're grass-eating vegetarians 00:15:23.49\00:15:27.22 carnivores in seven... herbivores in eight... 00:15:27.26\00:15:32.49 the beasts that we see in chapter 8 00:15:32.56\00:15:34.73 are the kinds of animals that the beasts in chapter 7 00:15:34.76\00:15:38.53 snack on... 00:15:38.60\00:15:39.93 so why this change? 00:15:39.97\00:15:43.61 Why carnivores in seven... herbivores in eight... 00:15:43.64\00:15:49.74 why that change? 00:15:49.78\00:15:52.75 Now, let me put another little wrinkle here that may help us. 00:15:52.81\00:15:55.98 You remember I told you the first day 00:15:56.02\00:15:58.75 we talked about chiasms and sandwiches. 00:15:58.79\00:16:01.42 Well, we move into the last part of the sandwich 00:16:01.46\00:16:04.86 because in Daniel chapter 8, 00:16:04.89\00:16:07.33 the language switches 00:16:07.36\00:16:10.27 from Aramaic back to Hebrew. 00:16:10.30\00:16:14.07 Remember we told you the first part was in Hebrew 00:16:14.10\00:16:16.14 then it switches to Aramaic then back to Hebrew. 00:16:16.17\00:16:20.11 Well, in Daniel chapter 8, he goes back to Hebrew. 00:16:20.14\00:16:24.05 So, obviously, what he is talking about now, 00:16:24.08\00:16:27.18 he wants the Jewish community to know and understand. 00:16:27.22\00:16:30.99 He wants them to have 00:16:31.02\00:16:33.62 some understanding of what's going on. 00:16:33.66\00:16:36.06 So, the first two visions are in Aramaic 00:16:36.09\00:16:38.43 when he comes to this third vision, 00:16:38.46\00:16:40.33 he goes back to Hebrew 00:16:40.36\00:16:41.93 so that his people have the same comfort 00:16:41.96\00:16:44.40 of knowing that God is with them and they are not alone. 00:16:44.43\00:16:48.90 Now, it also might indicate 00:16:48.94\00:16:52.11 that since he's talking in Hebrew 00:16:52.14\00:16:55.58 and he knows Hebrews are going to read this, 00:16:55.64\00:16:58.45 he goes from non-kosher animals 00:16:58.48\00:17:02.08 to kosher animals. 00:17:02.12\00:17:03.55 Maybe the ram and the goat 00:17:03.59\00:17:07.46 are little more acceptable to a Hebrew audience 00:17:07.49\00:17:10.16 because they... they're kosher... 00:17:10.19\00:17:11.53 and the lion... the bear... 00:17:11.56\00:17:12.96 and the leopard certainly are not 00:17:12.99\00:17:14.63 that again is speculation but he did... 00:17:14.66\00:17:17.77 he does change from Aramaic to Hebrew 00:17:17.83\00:17:20.87 and he finishes the book of Daniel in his native tongue 00:17:20.90\00:17:24.37 and that is Hebrew. 00:17:24.41\00:17:25.87 So, from here to the end we're in the Hebrew language. 00:17:25.91\00:17:28.18 Daniel sees some interesting things. 00:17:28.21\00:17:31.41 I'll pick up the scenario... 00:17:31.45\00:17:35.22 he sees a ram with two horns 00:17:35.25\00:17:38.92 now, we know by now when you see something with two 00:17:38.95\00:17:42.72 just like we saw the image in Daniel chapter 2, 00:17:42.76\00:17:46.49 the chest with two arms... 00:17:46.53\00:17:48.76 we know we're dealing with Medo-Persia. 00:17:48.80\00:17:52.50 So, we got a ram with two horns 00:17:52.53\00:17:54.40 and he is there by the side of the sea. 00:17:54.44\00:17:58.04 The horns are of unequal size. 00:17:58.07\00:18:01.61 You remember we said 00:18:01.64\00:18:02.98 that the Median half of the Empire was older 00:18:03.01\00:18:06.78 but the Persian half of the Empire was stronger 00:18:06.82\00:18:10.89 and the Persian half came up later 00:18:10.92\00:18:13.82 but it was stronger than the Median half. 00:18:13.86\00:18:16.56 So, now you got a ram... he's got two horns... 00:18:16.59\00:18:19.59 one horn is bigger than the other, 00:18:19.63\00:18:20.96 indicating Persia being bigger and stronger 00:18:21.00\00:18:23.87 than the Median half of the Empire. 00:18:23.90\00:18:26.80 So, we've got a ram. 00:18:26.84\00:18:28.70 We've got the Medo-Persian Empire 00:18:28.74\00:18:31.04 and in chapter 8 verse 4, 00:18:31.07\00:18:33.74 the text concludes 00:18:33.78\00:18:36.85 that the higher horn 00:18:36.88\00:18:39.91 is the later horn and comes up last 00:18:39.95\00:18:42.55 so, that buttresses our statement that Persia 00:18:42.58\00:18:47.72 though younger than the Median half 00:18:47.76\00:18:50.76 was stronger and ultimately exerted more influence 00:18:50.79\00:18:55.16 and more power. 00:18:55.20\00:18:57.07 Verse 4 is a rather lengthy verse 00:18:57.10\00:19:01.84 that indicates that no animal or kingdom could withstand them. 00:19:01.87\00:19:08.64 No animal... no kingdom 00:19:08.68\00:19:11.41 could withstand this particular beast. 00:19:11.45\00:19:15.02 Now, 00:19:15.05\00:19:17.12 let me give you a little side bar 00:19:17.19\00:19:18.52 because I think this is interesting. 00:19:18.55\00:19:19.89 When we think of Persia and the Persian Empire, 00:19:19.92\00:19:24.79 historians will tell you 00:19:24.83\00:19:27.00 that the Persian Empire grew 00:19:27.03\00:19:30.20 by overwhelming people. 00:19:30.23\00:19:32.70 In other words, when the Persian army went out to fight, 00:19:32.73\00:19:35.87 they went out to fight 00:19:35.90\00:19:37.41 in the tens and tens and tens of thousands of warriors. 00:19:37.44\00:19:41.88 No army, except maybe the Roman Army 00:19:41.91\00:19:45.51 and they did their work more through efficiency than numbers 00:19:45.55\00:19:49.22 overwhelmed people like the Persian Army. 00:19:49.25\00:19:52.25 When the Persian kings went out to fight, 00:19:52.29\00:19:54.99 they went out to fight with a 100,000... 00:19:55.02\00:19:57.69 200,000... 300,000... 00:19:57.73\00:19:59.96 400,000... so they... they... 00:20:00.00\00:20:02.20 they conquered by sheer numbers. 00:20:02.26\00:20:04.40 Now, look at this, this is a Persian Warrior. 00:20:04.43\00:20:08.00 he doesn't look much like a warrior does he? 00:20:08.04\00:20:11.04 Kind of looks like he's going to a cotillion 00:20:11.07\00:20:14.08 he's got a long skirt on... 00:20:14.11\00:20:16.51 and no armour... 00:20:16.54\00:20:18.75 a shield that is thatched and a javelin. 00:20:18.78\00:20:23.08 This is how the Persian Army went to war. 00:20:23.12\00:20:27.39 That's it. 00:20:27.42\00:20:31.26 Shield... javelin... you notice, no sword... 00:20:31.29\00:20:34.93 that's how they fought. 00:20:34.96\00:20:36.53 They came from a hot country, 00:20:36.56\00:20:38.17 they didn't use a lot of body armour, 00:20:38.23\00:20:40.57 they tended to fight in loose clothing, 00:20:40.60\00:20:42.87 and sometimes, they wore a nice knitted cap. 00:20:42.90\00:20:45.27 This is an "Immortal" 00:20:45.31\00:20:46.64 the Immortals were the Praetorian Guards, 00:20:46.68\00:20:49.78 they guarded the king. 00:20:49.81\00:20:51.15 Now, you know he does have a sword 00:20:51.18\00:20:52.81 but he's got the same sort of army dress... 00:20:52.85\00:20:56.52 he's got on trousers and he's got a thatched shield... 00:20:56.55\00:21:00.76 that's just... like a basket material... 00:21:00.79\00:21:02.56 he's got thatched shield... 00:21:02.62\00:21:03.96 that vest he's wearing is strips of linen glued together, 00:21:03.99\00:21:09.16 he's got a cloth cap... 00:21:09.20\00:21:11.60 he's got what we call a compound bow 00:21:11.63\00:21:15.37 which is that... the bow faces in and out 00:21:15.40\00:21:19.11 to give more speed to the arrows, 00:21:19.17\00:21:20.54 and he's got a javelin. 00:21:20.58\00:21:22.21 You will always see Persian warriors with a javelin 00:21:22.24\00:21:25.15 but he doesn't really look like somebody 00:21:25.18\00:21:27.38 who's going to war does he? 00:21:27.42\00:21:28.75 Nice pair of pants... nice vest... 00:21:28.78\00:21:31.42 if you take off that shield and whatnot 00:21:31.45\00:21:33.25 he really could go to a party 00:21:33.29\00:21:36.16 and nothing to protect his head. 00:21:36.19\00:21:38.99 That's a knitted cap... sometimes wool... sometimes silk 00:21:39.03\00:21:42.43 and that's how the Immortals fought 00:21:42.46\00:21:44.27 now the Immortals were there more for window dressing. 00:21:44.33\00:21:47.24 They didn't really do the heavy-duty fighting, 00:21:47.27\00:21:49.64 the heavy-duty fighting was fought by these guys. 00:21:49.67\00:21:51.87 The immortals just surrounded the king 00:21:51.91\00:21:54.48 and made sure he didn't get hurt. 00:21:54.54\00:21:56.81 Now, there's a third type. 00:21:56.85\00:21:58.18 Again, knitted cap... nothing to protect him... 00:21:58.21\00:22:01.75 loose tunic... javelin which is standard... 00:22:01.78\00:22:05.32 he doesn't have a sword... 00:22:05.35\00:22:06.86 and he's got this rounded shield. 00:22:06.89\00:22:09.02 Now, I put that there... I put those pictures there 00:22:09.06\00:22:12.43 for a couple of reasons. 00:22:12.46\00:22:13.80 The Persians were gentlemen fighters. 00:22:13.83\00:22:18.07 The Persians fought with spears, arrows, javelins 00:22:18.10\00:22:24.27 chariots and they put those rotating knives 00:22:24.31\00:22:28.21 on the sides of the chariots 00:22:28.24\00:22:29.58 that they got from the Assyrians, 00:22:29.61\00:22:31.31 so that, when the chariot was going through the enemy ranks, 00:22:31.35\00:22:34.32 the knife would spin and would sort of cut you down like a... 00:22:34.35\00:22:37.29 like a lawnmower cutting grass 00:22:37.32\00:22:39.82 they got that from the Assyrians 00:22:39.85\00:22:42.06 and they borrowed the compound bow from some other people. 00:22:42.09\00:22:45.36 They were gentlemen fighters who fought at a distance. 00:22:45.39\00:22:48.63 You see that? That javelin... 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.70 that spear is about twice the length of a man. 00:22:50.73\00:22:54.30 The Persians didn't like to get in close contact 00:22:54.34\00:22:57.87 with the people that they fought. 00:22:57.91\00:22:59.74 I want you to keep that in your mind 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.54 because we're going somewhere with this. 00:23:01.58\00:23:03.45 Even the Immortals... the elite fighters 00:23:03.48\00:23:06.51 from the 6th century used wicker leather and some bronze 00:23:06.55\00:23:11.32 and a soft-knit cap for their fighting. 00:23:11.35\00:23:15.42 We'll go back to this guy... that's... that's an Immortal. 00:23:15.46\00:23:18.23 That's the elite troops... those are the select guys... 00:23:18.26\00:23:22.06 Those are your marines... your... your Navy Seals. 00:23:22.10\00:23:25.43 Those are... those are the immortals. 00:23:25.50\00:23:27.40 They dressed almost like they were going to a cotillion. 00:23:27.44\00:23:34.34 Most of the armies that they fought 00:23:34.41\00:23:37.98 dressed pretty much like that. 00:23:38.01\00:23:40.22 The Bible says in Daniel that the ram pushed north, 00:23:40.25\00:23:47.99 south and west 00:23:48.02\00:23:51.09 and they did all right until they went to Greece in 490 B.C. 00:23:51.13\00:23:58.53 and they ran into the Athenians. 00:23:58.60\00:24:03.00 The Athenians were little more heavily armoured. 00:24:03.04\00:24:07.48 This is an Athenian war helmet. 00:24:07.51\00:24:10.61 Now, you got a guy with a knitted cap 00:24:10.65\00:24:14.12 fighting a guy with this... 00:24:14.15\00:24:17.09 who do you think is going to win? 00:24:17.15\00:24:19.82 The Greeks... and this is Greek... 00:24:19.85\00:24:22.49 you can tell it is Greek 00:24:22.52\00:24:23.86 because of the facial cut-out. 00:24:23.89\00:24:25.56 This is very distinctly a Greek helmet. 00:24:25.59\00:24:28.43 This nose piece... the eyes cut out... 00:24:28.46\00:24:31.23 this metal that comes all the way around the chin 00:24:31.27\00:24:33.84 this is an Athenian or Spartan or Trojan or Corinthian helmet 00:24:33.87\00:24:39.77 typical of the Greeks. 00:24:39.81\00:24:41.98 So, when the Persian Army went west in 490 B.C., 00:24:42.01\00:24:48.78 they met the Greeks... the Athenians at Marathon 00:24:48.82\00:24:53.66 and the massive Trojan Army 00:24:53.69\00:24:56.99 or rather... the massive army of the Medo-Persians 00:24:57.03\00:25:01.46 was turned back by men who they had never seen before 00:25:01.50\00:25:05.87 who were covered from head to toe in metal. 00:25:05.93\00:25:09.70 They'd never seen that before 00:25:09.74\00:25:11.44 and so, they went home defeated. 00:25:11.47\00:25:14.01 Ten years later... 00:25:14.04\00:25:16.14 ten years later... a king by the name of Xerxes 00:25:16.18\00:25:21.05 you know that name... 00:25:21.08\00:25:22.95 Xerxes in history is Ahasuerus in the Bible 00:25:22.98\00:25:27.09 the husband of Esther 00:25:27.16\00:25:28.52 from the book of Esther. 00:25:28.56\00:25:30.76 Ten years later in 480 B.C. 00:25:30.79\00:25:32.93 Xerxes returns with an army of 400,000 men 00:25:32.96\00:25:42.07 pause 00:25:42.10\00:25:44.67 in knitted caps and wicker shields 00:25:44.71\00:25:48.38 and javelins. 00:25:48.41\00:25:50.15 They run into a small Greek forest 00:25:50.18\00:25:53.58 at a place called Thermopylae. 00:25:53.62\00:25:56.95 How many have heard of 300 Spartans? 00:25:56.99\00:25:59.55 Heard of 300 Spartans? 00:25:59.59\00:26:01.19 Yeah... 400,000 soldiers met 300 Greeks 00:26:01.22\00:26:09.56 at Thermophylae. 00:26:09.60\00:26:10.93 Now, it wasn't just 300... 00:26:10.97\00:26:12.30 there were another 1,100 Bythnians with them 00:26:12.33\00:26:14.20 but together only about 1,400 people 00:26:14.24\00:26:18.04 fighting an army of 400,000. 00:26:18.07\00:26:21.91 Now, I'd like to say that they won... they didn't... 00:26:21.94\00:26:25.25 there's no way that 1,400 can beat 400,000... they lost... 00:26:25.31\00:26:31.52 but the Medo-Persian army still failed to conquer Greece. 00:26:31.55\00:26:37.73 Now, I want you to hold on to that 00:26:37.76\00:26:39.46 because I'm going somewhere with it. 00:26:39.49\00:26:41.16 Pause. 00:26:41.20\00:26:42.70 Xerxes went back home in disgrace. 00:26:42.76\00:26:46.70 He did not win. 00:26:46.74\00:26:49.17 Now, the Bible says that when this goat comes along 00:26:49.20\00:26:56.78 he moves so fast 00:26:56.81\00:27:00.35 that he moves without touching the ground. 00:27:00.38\00:27:05.02 Pause. 00:27:05.05\00:27:09.49 Alexander's troops were so well coordinated 00:27:09.52\00:27:14.30 and so well armoured 00:27:14.33\00:27:17.30 that when they went east through Persia, 00:27:17.33\00:27:20.20 they simply could not be stopped. 00:27:20.24\00:27:23.30 You've got men who were covered in bronze 00:27:23.34\00:27:26.47 from head to toe, 00:27:26.51\00:27:27.84 head protected... chest protected by metal... 00:27:27.88\00:27:31.05 legs protected by metal greaves 00:27:31.08\00:27:33.42 against guys who were wearing knitted caps 00:27:33.45\00:27:36.55 and linen clothes. 00:27:36.58\00:27:39.02 So, Alexander moved so far and so fast 00:27:39.05\00:27:42.59 the Bible says... 00:27:42.62\00:27:44.03 he literally moved without touching the ground. 00:27:44.06\00:27:49.10 Now the... the historians tell you 00:27:49.16\00:27:52.13 that Alexander had a new way of fighting. 00:27:52.17\00:27:55.24 Well, he did have some strategies and some tactics 00:27:55.27\00:27:58.04 that the Persians did not have, 00:27:58.07\00:27:59.67 but mostly... his men were better equipped 00:27:59.71\00:28:03.11 and better armed than the Persians 00:28:03.14\00:28:05.71 plus the Greeks used swords. 00:28:05.75\00:28:10.05 Persians were not accustomed to using swords. 00:28:10.09\00:28:13.96 The Persians rarely saw the face 00:28:13.99\00:28:16.09 of the person that they were fighting... 00:28:16.12\00:28:17.83 where the Greeks wanted to get in close 00:28:17.86\00:28:19.73 and so they just slashed and hacked and cut 00:28:19.76\00:28:21.80 and the Persians weren't accustomed to that. 00:28:21.83\00:28:24.00 They weren't accustomed to that kind of fighting 00:28:24.03\00:28:26.20 so, when Alexander and his men came in 00:28:26.23\00:28:28.40 covered from head to toe with metal 00:28:28.44\00:28:30.54 and expert at sword play 00:28:30.61\00:28:33.04 and the Persians never even used swords, 00:28:33.07\00:28:35.54 they went through the Persian Empire, 00:28:35.58\00:28:38.01 just like a knife through butter 00:28:38.05\00:28:39.85 and at the age of 30, 00:28:39.88\00:28:41.55 everything that was once Persian belonged to Alexander. 00:28:41.58\00:28:45.89 Notice in Daniel 8:5, the Bible says, 00:28:45.92\00:28:52.89 the goat came from the west 00:28:52.93\00:28:54.93 and moved across without touching the ground 00:28:54.96\00:28:58.07 and then in 8:6 it gives us a little more information. 00:28:58.10\00:29:04.14 Let's look at that. 00:29:04.17\00:29:06.44 "... he ran at him with furious power... 00:29:06.47\00:29:10.85 Pause. 00:29:10.88\00:29:13.62 In 331 A.D. at the Battle of Arbela, 00:29:13.65\00:29:19.89 this is the beginning of the Grecian Empire. 00:29:19.92\00:29:23.53 Babylon 605 to 539... 00:29:23.56\00:29:26.09 Medo-Persia 539 to 331... 00:29:26.16\00:29:28.66 so, in 331 A.D. at the Battle of Arbela 00:29:28.70\00:29:33.34 Alexander with an army of 40,000 men, 00:29:33.37\00:29:39.41 dressed like this, met the Persian Empire 00:29:39.44\00:29:45.41 Darius the 3rd, with an army of one million men 00:29:45.45\00:29:54.72 40,000 against 1,000,000 00:29:54.76\00:30:00.20 and Alexander's troops 40,000 in number... 00:30:00.23\00:30:05.47 decimated that Persian Army. 00:30:05.50\00:30:08.94 Tactics... and armour... 00:30:08.97\00:30:13.11 tactics... and armour 00:30:13.17\00:30:17.25 and you know, Ladies and Gentlemen, 00:30:17.28\00:30:19.25 the secret of successful Christian warfare today 00:30:19.28\00:30:24.19 guess what? " 00:32:12.79\00:32:14.13 Don't you get the feel that this is kind of a 00:32:14.16\00:32:15.80 personal kind of a thing, there's a little anger there... 00:32:15.83\00:32:18.17 a little rage going on there... 00:32:18.20\00:32:19.60 this... this goat is... 00:32:19.63\00:32:22.74 is trying to totally destroy this Ram 00:32:22.77\00:32:26.37 and I think the reason there was such animosity 00:32:26.41\00:32:29.94 between Alexander and the Medo-Persian Empire 00:32:29.98\00:32:33.42 was what we just talked about in 590 B.C. and 580 B.C. 00:32:33.45\00:32:38.79 when... when the Medo-Persian Empire came west 00:32:38.82\00:32:42.06 and tried to attack Greece. 00:32:42.09\00:32:44.99 Now, in the 400s... Herodotus 00:32:45.03\00:32:47.76 who was a Greek Historian living in Turkey 00:32:47.80\00:32:50.13 published what he called his Magnum Opus 00:32:50.23\00:32:52.53 which was a history of the wars of the Medo-Persians 00:32:52.60\00:32:58.14 against the Greeks. 00:32:58.17\00:32:59.51 So, when Alexander got strong enough, 00:32:59.54\00:33:01.88 he knew... he knew the history of how Medo-Persia 00:33:01.91\00:33:07.32 had tried to come in and take Greece 00:33:07.35\00:33:09.92 and how Greece rebuffed them two times. 00:33:09.95\00:33:12.49 So, now that he is strong enough, 00:33:12.52\00:33:15.02 when he goes into the east to attack the Medo-Persian Empire, 00:33:15.06\00:33:20.13 Alexander goes with full fury and full intent... 00:33:20.20\00:33:24.80 he grinds Medo-Persia into the ground 00:33:24.83\00:33:28.10 because he remembers what's happening 00:33:28.14\00:33:30.47 and that's what you're seeing here, 00:33:30.51\00:33:32.67 there's this... there's this personal thing going on 00:33:32.71\00:33:35.91 between Alexander and the Medo-Persian Empire 00:33:35.94\00:33:39.21 and I think it is retribution for Medo-Persia 00:33:39.25\00:33:42.38 trying to come into Greece so many years before 00:33:42.42\00:33:45.52 so at age 30 now 00:33:45.55\00:33:46.96 everything that was Persia... now belongs to him 00:33:47.02\00:33:51.73 and when we look at verse 7 there, 00:33:51.76\00:33:54.20 we get this kind of feeling that it's a personal problem 00:33:54.23\00:33:58.83 between Greece and Medo-Persia... 00:33:58.87\00:34:01.77 between the ram and the goat 00:34:01.80\00:34:05.71 but soon afterward, the Bible says, 00:34:05.74\00:34:08.74 the horn is broken. 00:34:08.78\00:34:11.11 Alexander dies of Malaria and drunkenness 00:34:11.15\00:34:14.95 and as we've said before, 00:34:14.98\00:34:16.38 the single horn is replaced by four notable horns 00:34:16.42\00:34:20.72 and I want you to stay with this because 00:34:20.76\00:34:22.56 when next we meet 00:34:22.59\00:34:24.03 we're going to talk about those four horns 00:34:24.06\00:34:26.53 when we get to Daniel chapter 11 00:34:26.59\00:34:29.30 and they're going to play a very important part 00:34:29.33\00:34:33.00 because Daniel chapter 11 is that chapter 00:34:33.03\00:34:35.44 that has occasioned some 00:34:35.47\00:34:37.47 dare I say, effervescence amongst scholars 00:34:37.51\00:34:41.61 some believe A... some believe B... 00:34:41.64\00:34:43.38 some believe A and B... some believe C... 00:34:43.41\00:34:45.41 we're going to try to walk you through that 00:34:45.45\00:34:47.42 the title of the message is: "Keep the Train on the Tracks" 00:34:47.45\00:34:51.55 pause 00:34:51.59\00:34:53.86 so Alexander's four Generals... he took the strongest four... 00:34:53.92\00:34:56.93 they took the reins... and as we said before 00:34:56.96\00:35:00.10 Seleucus gets Syria and the east. 00:35:00.16\00:35:03.83 All of the Seleucid kings took the name "Antiochus" 00:35:03.87\00:35:08.27 there were eight of them... 00:35:08.30\00:35:09.64 Antiochus the 1st, Antiochus the 2nd, 00:35:09.67\00:35:11.47 Antiochus the 3rd 00:35:11.51\00:35:12.84 Antiochus the 4th called Epipmanes... 00:35:12.87\00:35:15.38 I'm sorry... Epiphanes... 00:35:15.44\00:35:17.88 Epimanes means mad man... that's what they called him... 00:35:17.91\00:35:19.98 he called himself "Epiphanes" god-like... 00:35:20.02\00:35:23.08 Ptolemy takes the south and Egypt 00:35:23.12\00:35:25.65 as we mentioned, Cleopatra is a Ptolemy 00:35:25.69\00:35:27.99 and she actually comes back to us in Daniel chapter 11. 00:35:28.02\00:35:34.33 Lysimachus takes Asia Minor also called Pergamum. 00:35:34.36\00:35:38.60 Cassander takes Macedonia, Greece and the west, 00:35:38.63\00:35:42.84 so what they did was take the Grecian Empire, 00:35:42.87\00:35:47.01 divide it among themselves 00:35:47.08\00:35:48.94 but we'll find a little bit later 00:35:48.98\00:35:50.68 they weren't happy with the divisions 00:35:50.71\00:35:52.18 there was some in-fighting and we'll talk about that 00:35:52.21\00:35:55.48 when we look at Daniel chapter 11 00:35:55.52\00:35:57.42 but it's very, very interesting. 00:35:57.45\00:35:59.29 So, now, we come to a Little Horn that pops up 00:35:59.32\00:36:08.16 in Daniel chapter 8 verses 9 through 12. 00:36:08.20\00:36:11.00 Now, the reason I'm... I'm taking time with this 00:36:11.03\00:36:13.77 is the fact that there are some people 00:36:13.80\00:36:18.67 who believe the... the little horn here 00:36:18.71\00:36:23.48 is one of those Seleucid kings... Antiochus. 00:36:23.51\00:36:27.88 It is not... 00:36:27.92\00:36:29.45 he is not... 00:36:29.48\00:36:30.92 Antiochus was a famous hater of Jews... true... 00:36:30.95\00:36:36.96 he did profane the Temple... true... 00:36:36.99\00:36:39.89 he did try to Hellenize or turn the Jews into Greeks 00:36:39.93\00:36:44.57 true... 00:36:44.63\00:36:45.97 but he is not the Little Horn Power 00:36:46.00\00:36:48.67 and there are those who believe that 00:36:48.70\00:36:51.84 but the Bible does not support that. 00:36:51.87\00:36:56.38 The key is in Daniel 8 verse 9... 00:36:56.41\00:37:00.15 the Bible says, "Out of them... " 00:37:00.18\00:37:03.85 and the key is: Who is the "them" referring to? 00:37:03.89\00:37:07.76 It is not referring to the Seleucid Kingdom, 00:37:07.79\00:37:11.53 it is referring to the next series of... 00:37:11.56\00:37:15.23 or rather the next beast and his time on earth 00:37:15.26\00:37:19.57 and so, Antiochus is not the Little Horn 00:37:19.60\00:37:24.01 and could not be the Little Horn. 00:37:24.04\00:37:26.54 There's not enough Biblical evidence to support that. 00:37:26.57\00:37:30.35 So the "them" is out of the four directions... 00:37:30.38\00:37:36.22 one of the four directions 00:37:36.25\00:37:37.59 and, of course, the direction is north. 00:37:37.62\00:37:39.05 This Little Horn comes... we see this Little Horn... 00:37:39.09\00:37:43.73 he grows up to be strong 00:37:43.76\00:37:46.83 and exceedingly great, 00:37:46.86\00:37:49.86 he pushes towards the south and the east 00:37:49.90\00:37:54.14 and the glorious land 00:37:54.20\00:37:55.90 which, of course, is the Bible Land, 00:37:55.97\00:37:57.91 he casts down some of the hosts and some of the stars, 00:37:57.97\00:38:01.21 he tramples on them, 00:38:01.24\00:38:02.64 he exalts himself against the Prince of Heaven 00:38:02.71\00:38:05.51 and the only... the only Empire 00:38:05.55\00:38:07.98 that exalted itself against the Prince is the Roman Empire. 00:38:08.02\00:38:11.55 So, Antiochus did do some bad things 00:38:11.59\00:38:15.69 but it is the Roman Empire that is pre-figured here. 00:38:15.72\00:38:19.36 The word "sacrifice" in verse 13 00:38:19.39\00:38:23.67 in its original 00:38:23.70\00:38:25.40 is later translated "Tamid" which means "the daily" 00:38:25.43\00:38:30.91 here's what I found out about the "Daily" 00:38:30.97\00:38:33.04 when we're looking at an explanation of the "Daily" 00:38:33.07\00:38:36.31 and I wish we had time to just read the whole text 00:38:36.34\00:38:39.55 but we don't have time to do that. 00:38:39.58\00:38:40.98 The "Daily" does not only mean the daily sacrifice... 00:38:41.02\00:38:44.92 that is the morning and evening services, 00:38:44.95\00:38:46.49 the word "Tamid" means 00:38:46.55\00:38:48.62 anything that is done on a continual basis... 00:38:48.66\00:38:52.66 that's important 00:38:52.69\00:38:54.40 because when we're talking about destroying the "daily" 00:38:54.43\00:38:58.63 and replacing the "daily" 00:38:58.67\00:39:00.44 it not only means the Sacrificial System 00:39:00.50\00:39:03.77 it can also mean weekly services like Sabbath Services. 00:39:03.81\00:39:10.78 So, the "daily" is a little more comprehensive 00:39:10.81\00:39:15.28 than we may have thought. 00:39:15.32\00:39:17.52 It does mean the morning and the evening sacrifices 00:39:17.55\00:39:21.32 but it also means "Old Testament Worship Services" 00:39:21.36\00:39:25.09 like the weekly Sabbath Service 00:39:25.13\00:39:27.70 and anything that is done 00:39:27.73\00:39:29.56 on a continual or "regularly occurring" basis 00:39:29.60\00:39:33.60 including the morning and evening services. 00:39:33.64\00:39:37.61 So, then, this new power 00:39:37.64\00:39:41.14 not only disrupts the morning and evening sacrificial system 00:39:41.18\00:39:48.75 he also destroys the keeping of the Sabbath 00:39:48.78\00:39:53.49 and the only Empire or the only entity 00:39:53.52\00:39:59.49 that did that is Rome. 00:39:59.53\00:40:02.40 Pagan Rome destroyed the Sanctuary Service 00:40:02.43\00:40:07.57 and the daily sacrificial system 00:40:07.60\00:40:10.61 and Papal Rome destroyed or at least attempted to destroy 00:40:10.67\00:40:16.24 the keeping of the Sabbath. 00:40:16.28\00:40:18.91 Verse 12 says, "For a while everything prospered. " 00:40:18.95\00:40:26.55 For a while, everything went well 00:40:26.59\00:40:30.66 and so now, Gabriel is commissioned 00:40:30.69\00:40:34.80 to make all of this plain to Daniel. 00:40:34.83\00:40:38.90 I've got to move fast, 00:40:38.93\00:40:41.24 in 70 A.D., Rome destroyed Jerusalem 00:40:41.27\00:40:45.47 and the Temple 00:40:45.51\00:40:46.88 no stone left one upon the other. 00:40:46.94\00:40:50.51 I've been there... 00:40:50.55\00:40:51.91 and this Western Wall which they call the Temple 00:40:51.95\00:40:54.45 actually is not the Temple. 00:40:54.48\00:40:56.32 The Western Wall or the Wailing Wall 00:40:56.35\00:40:58.59 is the basement... 00:40:58.62\00:41:00.46 it is the substrate or the foundation of the Temple. 00:41:00.49\00:41:04.06 The Temple from ground level up has been totally destroyed. 00:41:04.09\00:41:08.43 The stones are down... 00:41:08.46\00:41:09.80 what the Jews are praying to 00:41:09.83\00:41:11.87 is the foundation of the Temple, the old Temple... 00:41:11.90\00:41:15.50 that is the Wailing Wall or the Western Wall of the Temple. 00:41:15.54\00:41:19.34 So, in 70 A.D. city is destroyed 00:41:19.37\00:41:24.41 the temple is destroyed... 00:41:24.45\00:41:27.55 Rome ends now the Sacrificial System. 00:41:27.58\00:41:31.89 The "Daily" is destroyed. 00:41:31.92\00:41:34.39 The "Horn" has yet to reach its full potency, 00:41:34.42\00:41:39.76 it is not speaking its pompous words yet 00:41:39.79\00:41:43.13 that is to come... 00:41:43.16\00:41:44.50 so, Daniel overhears now 00:41:44.53\00:41:47.57 a conversation between two heavenly beings 00:41:47.60\00:41:51.07 and the discussion is, "How long is this going to be?" 00:41:51.14\00:41:56.85 How long will this scenario be played out? 00:41:56.91\00:42:02.72 And the answer is: 2,300 evenings and mornings. 00:42:02.75\00:42:08.72 2,300 days... 2,300 evenings and mornings. 00:42:08.76\00:42:14.06 Then after 1798... the end of that time 00:42:14.10\00:42:19.33 something very spectacular is going to happen. 00:42:19.37\00:42:23.24 We find this in Daniel chapter 8 verse 14, 00:42:23.27\00:42:27.08 I've got to remember that, I will never forget that. 00:42:27.11\00:42:29.68 When I was taking Daniel and Revelation in school 00:42:29.71\00:42:32.21 I was carrying a perfect "A" throughout the entire Semester 00:42:32.25\00:42:38.45 and on my final exam... I got one question wrong out of 50 00:42:38.49\00:42:44.66 and I assumed since I had an "A" going in 00:42:44.69\00:42:51.07 and I only got one question wrong, 00:42:51.13\00:42:53.47 that I should get an "A" 00:42:53.50\00:42:56.24 one out of 50 is not bad... 00:42:56.27\00:42:58.64 49 right... one wrong... 00:42:58.67\00:43:00.98 My teacher is the late Dr. was the late Dr. J.J. Beale 00:43:01.01\00:43:07.22 and he said, "I'm going to give you a 'B'" 00:43:07.25\00:43:13.52 and I was kind of upset. 00:43:13.56\00:43:16.93 Pause. 00:43:16.96\00:43:18.46 "One wrong answer in a whole semester 00:43:18.49\00:43:21.40 and you drop me a whole letter grade? 00:43:21.43\00:43:24.30 You're giving me a 'B'?" 00:43:24.33\00:43:26.84 Pause. 00:43:26.87\00:43:29.80 The question was, "Where is the 2,300 days found?" 00:43:29.84\00:43:33.91 And I put Daniel 8:16. 00:43:33.94\00:43:38.31 He said, "You're going to be a preacher, 00:43:38.35\00:43:42.45 no preacher should get that wrong, 00:43:42.48\00:43:46.62 I'm giving you a 'B'." 00:43:46.65\00:43:49.19 Audience: Responding. 00:43:49.22\00:43:51.73 And that's been many, many years ago 00:43:51.76\00:43:53.50 and it's still right here. 00:43:53.53\00:43:54.86 Laughter... 00:43:54.90\00:43:56.97 He gave me a "B" one question on a final exam! 00:43:57.00\00:44:01.80 Straight "A" student. 00:44:01.84\00:44:03.24 I said, "You know what that's going to do to my grade?" 00:44:03.30\00:44:05.97 A "B" in Daniel and Revelation... 00:44:06.04\00:44:09.51 He said, "Yup, you get a 'B'." 00:44:09.54\00:44:12.95 And to this day, there is on my transcript a "B" 00:44:12.98\00:44:18.42 in Daniel and Revelation. 00:44:18.45\00:44:21.32 Pause. 00:44:21.36\00:44:23.16 So, Daniel chapter 8 verse 14 00:44:23.19\00:44:26.49 is the answer to "How long...?" 00:44:26.53\00:44:29.76 Unto 2,300 mornings and evenings... 00:44:29.80\00:44:35.67 2,300 days... 00:44:35.70\00:44:37.04 and then the Sanctuary will be cleansed 00:44:37.07\00:44:41.18 and Daniel was much disturbed and perplexed 00:44:41.21\00:44:45.61 as to what he saw and how it would play out. 00:44:45.65\00:44:49.78 Pause. 00:44:49.82\00:44:51.79 And Gabriel is summoned and commissioned, in chapter 8, 00:44:51.85\00:44:54.89 to give a full explanation of what is happening 00:44:54.92\00:44:59.09 and what the... what begins in chapter 8, 00:44:59.13\00:45:02.60 actually crosses over into chapter 9 00:45:02.63\00:45:05.87 and the explanation becomes full. 00:45:05.90\00:45:09.07 We get an exact detailed explanation from Gabriel 00:45:09.10\00:45:15.98 and it follows in verses 18 through 22... and really beyond. 00:45:16.01\00:45:21.42 The key, of course, is Daniel 8:14. 00:45:21.45\00:45:25.65 The Sanctuary will be cleansed. 00:45:25.69\00:45:29.59 God is going to do something very, very important 00:45:29.62\00:45:35.00 at the end of this time. 00:45:35.03\00:45:36.67 He's going to do something of cosmic importance. 00:45:36.70\00:45:40.50 Before the "Daily" is referenced, 00:45:40.54\00:45:45.41 there is a cleaning that is alluded to. 00:45:45.44\00:45:48.14 You see, in prophecy, we have the year/day principle. 00:45:48.18\00:45:53.21 Let me establish that now. 00:45:53.25\00:45:54.58 Here are two texts that you can use. 00:45:54.62\00:45:56.02 Numbers chapter 14 verse 34, Ezekiel chapter 4 verse 6. 00:45:56.05\00:46:00.49 "I have laid on you a day for a year... " 00:46:00.52\00:46:03.59 so in prophetic parlance, 00:46:03.63\00:46:07.60 you can always have a day equal a year 00:46:07.63\00:46:12.93 and only in prophetic and apocalyptic literature. 00:46:12.97\00:46:16.40 In regular Bible parlance, a day is a day, 00:46:16.44\00:46:19.47 but when you go to Daniel 00:46:19.51\00:46:21.08 and Pastor Lomacang will show us again 00:46:21.11\00:46:22.98 when we do Revelation... a day can equal a year 00:46:23.04\00:46:26.35 and the prophecies only make sense 00:46:26.38\00:46:28.98 when a day equals a year. 00:46:29.02\00:46:30.99 So, you got those texts to back you up. 00:46:31.02\00:46:34.12 "I've laid on you a day for each year. " 00:46:34.16\00:46:37.19 And when you put the year/day prophecy together, 00:46:37.23\00:46:40.96 these things work... 00:46:41.03\00:46:42.36 and so, all of the time prophecies 00:46:42.40\00:46:46.87 and this is important... this is important... 00:46:46.90\00:46:49.37 this is an exegetical principle. 00:46:49.40\00:46:50.91 All of the time prophecies in the Bible, 00:46:50.94\00:46:54.04 fit into this 2,300-day prophecy. 00:46:54.08\00:46:58.65 All of the time prophecies 00:46:58.68\00:47:01.35 fit in there 00:47:01.38\00:47:03.18 and the reason I'm suggesting that... 00:47:03.22\00:47:04.55 and emphasizing that 00:47:04.59\00:47:05.92 is because when we come to Daniel 11, 00:47:05.95\00:47:07.99 there are some who say that there's one time prophecy 00:47:08.02\00:47:11.63 that extends beyond. 00:47:11.69\00:47:13.06 I don't accept that. 00:47:13.09\00:47:14.43 Now there are those who might... I do not. 00:47:14.46\00:47:17.37 I believe, all of the time prophecies 00:47:17.40\00:47:20.14 fit into the 2,300 days 00:47:20.17\00:47:22.20 because at the end of the 2,300 days 00:47:22.24\00:47:26.57 we reach what we call "the end of time" 00:47:26.61\00:47:30.78 "the end of time" simply means 00:47:30.85\00:47:33.58 that there are no more time prophecies 00:47:33.62\00:47:36.45 between the end of the 2,300 days 00:47:36.48\00:47:39.52 and the second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:47:39.55\00:47:42.19 1798 is the time of the end. 00:47:42.22\00:47:46.59 The end of the 2,300 days is the "end of time" 00:47:46.63\00:47:52.80 in other words, 00:47:52.83\00:47:54.60 we're not looking for any more time prophecies to expire 00:47:54.64\00:47:58.61 before Jesus comes. 00:47:58.64\00:48:00.04 Audience: Amen. 00:48:00.08\00:48:01.41 Technically, Christ could come at any time. 00:48:01.44\00:48:05.95 Amen, no more 1,260... no more 1,290... 00:48:05.98\00:48:10.45 no more 1,335... 00:48:10.49\00:48:12.55 Christ could come any time He wishes 00:48:12.59\00:48:17.13 he's just waiting on us now. 00:48:17.16\00:48:20.10 Amen. 00:48:20.13\00:48:21.60 So, that is my belief. 00:48:21.63\00:48:24.60 Pause. 00:48:24.63\00:48:26.97 We understand that the 2,300 days leads us 00:48:27.00\00:48:32.11 to what we call the typical Day of Atonement. 00:48:32.17\00:48:36.61 During the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur... 00:48:36.64\00:48:40.62 God's people were to afflict their souls 00:48:40.65\00:48:44.55 and cleanse themselves because the Day of Atonement 00:48:44.59\00:48:49.76 was a day of cleansing and judgment 00:48:49.79\00:48:53.86 and you should write that down if you're taking notes 00:48:53.90\00:48:56.30 because whenever God judges, 00:48:56.36\00:48:59.37 He always cleanses. 00:48:59.43\00:49:01.90 Whenever God cleanses, He always judges. 00:49:01.97\00:49:06.71 In fact, the word for "cleanse" and "judge" 00:49:06.74\00:49:11.45 are the same word. 00:49:11.51\00:49:13.78 God cleanses... He judges... 00:49:13.82\00:49:17.09 the priest did special things on the Day of Atonement 00:49:17.12\00:49:20.66 he went from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place 00:49:20.69\00:49:24.23 to minister directly before God 00:49:24.26\00:49:27.03 and we believe in 1844 at the end of the 2,300 days 00:49:27.06\00:49:30.63 we gave you the starting point, two sermons ago 00:49:30.67\00:49:34.14 Christ moved from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place 00:49:34.17\00:49:40.61 to begin the work of cleansing and judging 00:49:40.64\00:49:45.55 and when Christ comes from that Most Holy Place, 00:49:45.58\00:49:50.15 He's coming back here 00:49:50.19\00:49:51.85 to get His saints and take them home. 00:49:51.92\00:49:53.86 Can you say, "Amen. " Audience: Amen. 00:49:53.89\00:49:56.22 When God cleanses He also judges. 00:49:56.29\00:49:58.59 "The cleansing of the sanctuary is a determinative work 00:49:58.63\00:50:03.53 as such, a work of judgment. " 00:50:03.57\00:50:07.04 When Christ comes back, it will already be determined 00:50:07.07\00:50:10.21 who is going back home with Him, amen. 00:50:10.24\00:50:12.71 That's why we call it "The Pre-Advent Judgment" 00:50:12.74\00:50:15.21 because you see Christ again, 00:50:15.24\00:50:17.28 those... you'll forgive my pejorative English, 00:50:17.35\00:50:21.45 "Those who is... will be and those who ain't won't be" 00:50:21.48\00:50:26.45 amen. 00:50:26.49\00:50:28.06 In other words, the decision will already have been made 00:50:28.09\00:50:32.63 during the typical Day of Atonement, amen. 00:50:32.66\00:50:36.16 Christ is deciding now, names are being looked at now, 00:50:36.20\00:50:39.33 cases are being decided now 00:50:39.37\00:50:40.84 and when Christ comes back, 00:50:40.87\00:50:42.57 He that is righteous will be... 00:50:42.60\00:50:44.27 Audience: Righteous still. 00:50:44.31\00:50:45.64 He that will be holy will be... 00:50:45.67\00:50:47.01 Audience: Holy still... 00:50:47.04\00:50:48.38 He that is unrighteous will be... 00:50:48.41\00:50:49.74 Audience: Unrighteous still... 00:50:49.78\00:50:51.11 He that is unholy will be... 00:50:51.15\00:50:52.48 Audience: Unholy still... 00:50:52.51\00:50:53.85 Yeah, now is the time of cleansing, 00:50:53.88\00:50:55.68 now is the time to get right with God 00:50:55.72\00:50:57.99 because when Christ comes back, 00:50:58.02\00:50:59.49 the decision will already have been made. 00:50:59.52\00:51:02.32 Amen. 00:51:02.36\00:51:03.69 Your house will be built... 00:51:03.73\00:51:05.49 as I say, "Your key is already in the door" 00:51:05.53\00:51:07.70 but in heaven, there won't be any keys 00:51:07.73\00:51:09.33 because there won't be any locks, amen... 00:51:09.36\00:51:10.70 Audience: Amen. 00:51:10.73\00:51:12.07 So, it will already be determined 00:51:12.10\00:51:13.44 when Christ comes back 00:51:13.47\00:51:15.27 because judging and cleansing 00:51:15.30\00:51:18.64 are the same thing when it comes to the Lord. 00:51:18.67\00:51:21.51 When He judges... He cleanses, when He cleanses... He judges, 00:51:21.54\00:51:24.95 Here's the word, "Tsadaq" the "T" is silent 00:51:24.98\00:51:29.22 Tsadaq... it means to justify is to cleanse. 00:51:29.25\00:51:33.46 Amen. 00:51:33.49\00:51:35.16 When Christ justifies, He'll also cleanse you 00:51:35.19\00:51:38.66 so when He forgives you of your sins, 00:51:38.69\00:51:40.53 He also cleanses you from them sins. 00:51:40.56\00:51:42.36 From "them" sins... 00:51:42.40\00:51:44.07 For those sins... I forget, I'm in an academic community... 00:51:44.10\00:51:46.77 from those sins... amen. 00:51:46.80\00:51:48.57 Audience: Amen... laughter... 00:51:48.60\00:51:49.94 Yeah, it will be kind of... 00:51:49.97\00:51:51.31 it will be sad to just forgive you and not cleanse you 00:51:51.34\00:51:53.84 because if He forgives you and not cleanses you, 00:51:53.88\00:51:56.98 then you... you have to do it again. 00:51:57.01\00:51:58.65 Yeah. 00:51:58.81\00:52:01.45 But if He forgives you and cleanses you, 00:52:01.48\00:52:04.65 then you're free from it, amen. 00:52:04.69\00:52:07.19 So, when Christ justifies... He also cleanses. 00:52:07.22\00:52:10.99 "... his power shall be magnified 00:52:11.03\00:52:13.29 but not by his own power... " 00:52:13.33\00:52:14.66 Now, what are we talking about? 00:52:14.70\00:52:16.03 We're talking about that beast 00:52:16.06\00:52:17.63 who's going to get a lot of power 00:52:17.67\00:52:19.33 but it won't come from him, it comes from another authority. 00:52:19.37\00:52:23.54 and that, of course, we know 00:52:23.57\00:52:26.34 is the anti-God or anti-Christ-like Authority. 00:52:26.37\00:52:31.91 So, shortly after this time, judgment is going to begin. 00:52:31.95\00:52:36.65 It parallels the ancient Day of Atonement. 00:52:36.69\00:52:41.29 Leviticus chapter 23 verse 29 gives us, 00:52:41.32\00:52:45.89 not only our marching orders 00:52:45.96\00:52:47.83 but it gives us the pattern 00:52:47.86\00:52:49.70 that this modern Day of Atonement is to follow. 00:52:49.73\00:52:52.67 "... for any person who is not afflicted in soul on that day 00:52:52.73\00:52:57.81 shall be cut off from his people... " 00:52:57.84\00:53:02.04 the word "cut off" simply means 00:53:02.08\00:53:04.98 "if on that day you do not humble yourself" 00:53:05.01\00:53:08.85 and let's take a look at this Access Point. 00:53:08.88\00:53:12.69 "Judgment becomes good news 00:53:12.72\00:53:16.02 if our sins have gone before us into the sanctuary...
