(gentle music) 00:00:00.53\00:00:02.56 - Welcome, everyone. 00:00:03.97\00:00:05.30 We're excited to share some country wisdom with you. 00:00:05.30\00:00:07.64 - King Solomon had a thing or two to say 00:00:07.64\00:00:09.74 about the path to wisdom. 00:00:09.74\00:00:11.51 In "Proverbs 4", he wrote, 00:00:11.51\00:00:13.68 "Let your eyes look directly forward 00:00:13.68\00:00:16.08 and your gaze be straight before you. 00:00:16.08\00:00:19.15 Keep straight, the path of your feet 00:00:19.15\00:00:21.38 and all your ways will be sure." 00:00:21.38\00:00:23.72 - Join us, now, for "Country Wisdom". 00:00:23.72\00:00:25.69 (gentle music) 00:00:25.69\00:00:28.36 (dramatic music) 00:00:31.29\00:00:34.10 Everyone, we've an exciting program for you, today. 00:00:45.91\00:00:48.61 Don't we, Janice? 00:00:48.61\00:00:49.54 - I think so. 00:00:49.54\00:00:50.41 - Yeah. 00:00:50.41\00:00:51.25 - I'm excited (laughs). 00:00:51.25\00:00:52.81 - And I'm going to introduce you to someone in a moment, 00:00:52.81\00:00:54.08 but I wanna read you some scripture 00:00:54.08\00:00:55.55 from "Isaiah Chapter 40", 00:00:55.55\00:00:57.79 beginning in verse 29, 00:00:57.79\00:00:59.22 "He giveth power to the faint; 00:00:59.22\00:01:00.96 and to them that have no might, 00:01:00.96\00:01:03.19 he increaseth their strength, 00:01:03.19\00:01:05.09 but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; 00:01:05.09\00:01:07.66 they shall mount up with wings as eagles 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.43 and shall run and not be wary 00:01:10.43\00:01:12.27 and shall walk and not be faint." 00:01:12.27\00:01:15.04 You'll see, why that scripture, shortly. 00:01:15.04\00:01:18.21 Dr. Garver, it's good to have you with us, today. 00:01:18.21\00:01:20.61 Thank you for being here. 00:01:20.61\00:01:21.78 - It's good to be here. 00:01:21.78\00:01:22.61 Thank you so much. 00:01:22.61\00:01:23.95 - Tell me, you, well, I'm gonna get right to it. 00:01:23.95\00:01:26.01 You were a conscientious objector in Vietnam. 00:01:26.01\00:01:28.55 Now, in, kind of, when I grew up, 00:01:28.55\00:01:31.79 we're getting pretty close to the same age, here, I think. 00:01:31.79\00:01:34.12 When I grew up, 00:01:34.12\00:01:35.16 conscientious objector had a terrible, 00:01:35.16\00:01:38.19 just, nobody wanted to be around that person. 00:01:38.19\00:01:41.56 But things have changed 00:01:41.56\00:01:42.83 and we'll talk about that pretty soon. 00:01:42.83\00:01:44.13 But tell us about your story, if you would. 00:01:44.13\00:01:46.13 (dramatic music) 00:01:46.13\00:01:47.44 - Well, my dad was in "World War II", 00:01:47.44\00:01:49.34 drafted and he was a conscientious objector. 00:01:49.34\00:01:52.44 So, I grew up, hearing nothing about his stories 00:01:52.44\00:01:57.31 of the action that he was a part of, 00:01:57.31\00:02:00.25 but, certainly, about the reason he went in 00:02:00.25\00:02:04.09 and was willing to serve without bearing arms. 00:02:04.09\00:02:07.19 (Dr. Garver clears throat) 00:02:07.19\00:02:08.02 And that intrigued me. 00:02:08.02\00:02:09.16 I didn't even want to see animals run over in the road. 00:02:10.49\00:02:13.16 I didn't want anything to get hurt. 00:02:13.16\00:02:15.06 So, being able to go into a place 00:02:15.06\00:02:18.33 where people were killing each other 00:02:18.33\00:02:19.90 and me, not have to do that, 00:02:19.90\00:02:21.20 was very appealing to me, 00:02:21.20\00:02:23.44 regardless, of any other belief system at all. 00:02:23.44\00:02:26.44 With his background and my, growing up in that environment, 00:02:27.78\00:02:32.75 I'm not sure, 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.15 I, really, thought that much about it, intentionally. 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.79 When I turned 18, 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.05 I went down to the courthouse, I registered, 00:02:39.05\00:02:41.26 I filled out the papers for conscientious objector. 00:02:41.26\00:02:43.99 I just thought that's what we did. 00:02:43.99\00:02:45.56 (dramatic music) 00:02:45.56\00:02:47.13 And come to find out that just wasn't what everybody did. 00:02:47.13\00:02:51.57 (Dr. Garver laughs) (Jim laughs) 00:02:51.57\00:02:53.07 And I learned that there was a whole lot more to it, 00:02:53.07\00:02:55.40 than just getting a title of conscientious objector. 00:02:55.40\00:03:00.18 I was a lot more involved in that as I would find out, then. 00:03:00.18\00:03:03.21 - Well, unpack that for us a little bit, if you would. 00:03:03.21\00:03:05.65 - Why would someone make that choice, 00:03:05.65\00:03:08.05 first of all, to be willing to join the military 00:03:08.05\00:03:11.75 without being your standard soldier? 00:03:11.75\00:03:14.99 It seems like, that's a dichotomy there. 00:03:14.99\00:03:17.46 - Well, the neat thing for me and my dad, both, I know, 00:03:18.83\00:03:23.60 was that we realized very early on, 00:03:25.77\00:03:28.80 thanks to him, I did, 00:03:28.80\00:03:30.67 that there was a way 00:03:30.67\00:03:32.57 to serve in the military and save lives, 00:03:32.57\00:03:35.78 rather than to take lives. 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.88 And it seemed like just about all the kids, 00:03:37.88\00:03:41.08 who were conscientious objector 00:03:41.08\00:03:42.18 that got drafted and went, 00:03:42.18\00:03:43.92 which all of us did in Vietnam, there, 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.65 very few of us ran off to Canada, 00:03:46.65\00:03:48.69 people ran to Canada for other reasons, 00:03:49.79\00:03:51.69 but I'm not sure, very many of them ran off, 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.63 because they didn't want to carry a weapon. 00:03:53.63\00:03:56.40 - So, you loved your country and you wanted to serve her? 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.33 - That was the bottom-line. 00:03:58.33\00:04:00.10 Loved the country, 00:04:00.10\00:04:01.40 what I could do to help perpetuate the freedom 00:04:01.40\00:04:04.47 that we enjoyed, that I enjoyed, 00:04:04.47\00:04:06.71 was, certainly, worth serving two years 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.51 in whatever capacity possible. 00:04:10.41\00:04:12.78 Now, back then, I realized there were other ways to serve 00:04:12.78\00:04:15.98 by the time, I got drafted as a conscientious objector, 00:04:15.98\00:04:18.99 clerks and cooks and those kind of things. 00:04:21.59\00:04:26.29 But pretty much, the medic route, 00:04:26.29\00:04:28.73 was the way, they all started out. 00:04:28.73\00:04:30.97 And what more witness could I have had 00:04:30.97\00:04:34.67 than to going to battle, 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.64 knowing that if I was involved in any way, 00:04:36.64\00:04:39.54 I'd be saving lives, our troops, or the enemies 00:04:39.54\00:04:43.75 and not having to worry about trying to protect my own life. 00:04:43.75\00:04:48.82 And that became a very powerful tool 00:04:49.95\00:04:52.55 to unite me to the guys I took care of 00:04:54.22\00:04:57.69 and we'd go out on patrol with, 00:04:57.69\00:04:59.69 which I was shocked, 00:04:59.69\00:05:01.06 because I thought they would hate me, like Doss, 00:05:01.06\00:05:05.37 but they embraced me. 00:05:05.37\00:05:07.30 In fact, I'll never forget one big, old sergeant, 00:05:07.30\00:05:09.60 he said, "Medic, stay close to me. 00:05:09.60\00:05:14.68 You take care of me, I'll take care of you." 00:05:15.74\00:05:17.81 And we had a pact. 00:05:17.81\00:05:18.91 I mean, so, those kind of things united us 00:05:18.91\00:05:23.65 and I think, our good friend, Desmond, 00:05:23.65\00:05:27.52 paved the way for a lot of us 00:05:27.52\00:05:29.99 to have a lot less controversy and hassle. 00:05:29.99\00:05:33.19 And in fact, in basic, 00:05:33.19\00:05:35.93 they couldn't treat us like they treated Desmond. 00:05:35.93\00:05:38.80 They couldn't even treat us like the regular basic trainees, 00:05:38.80\00:05:42.64 just down the road at Fort Pike, Louisiana. 00:05:42.64\00:05:44.94 We had some, it was, really, kind of, neat. 00:05:46.04\00:05:49.04 Some of our guys didn't know, they were in the army, almost. 00:05:49.04\00:05:51.65 I mean, they did, but it was different. 00:05:51.65\00:05:55.05 - And I'm curious with your sergeant, 00:05:55.05\00:05:57.22 there must have been something else 00:05:57.22\00:05:58.55 than just you, or the medic to take care of, 00:05:58.55\00:06:00.26 he must have recognized 00:06:00.26\00:06:01.39 that maybe, you had a relationship with God 00:06:01.39\00:06:02.79 and he wanted to, kind of, embrace that a little bit? 00:06:02.79\00:06:07.10 - I would like to think, he could see that in me (laughs), 00:06:07.10\00:06:09.33 but I'm not gonna put word in his mouth, 00:06:09.33\00:06:11.90 'cause yeah, that never really came up. 00:06:11.90\00:06:14.87 - You must have had people, though, 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.40 who questioned your decision and wanted to know- 00:06:16.40\00:06:18.61 - [Dr. Garver] Oh yeah- 00:06:18.61\00:06:19.44 - Why are you a "CO"? 00:06:19.44\00:06:21.54 - Yeah, well, that was until they got to know me, 00:06:22.88\00:06:25.05 that was the only question they'd ask. 00:06:25.05\00:06:27.08 Basically, once they found out, 00:06:27.08\00:06:28.72 well, "Where's your M16, or where's your 45?" 00:06:28.72\00:06:31.89 I said, "Well, I don't have one." 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.89 They said, "Well." 00:06:33.89\00:06:35.46 My first sergeant tried to court-martial me, every month, 00:06:35.46\00:06:38.73 because I wouldn't even go to the firing range 00:06:38.73\00:06:40.80 and learn how to shoot them. 00:06:40.80\00:06:42.50 And he'd threaten to court-marshal me 00:06:42.50\00:06:44.33 and I'd say, "All you want, (indistinct) sergeant, 00:06:44.33\00:06:48.04 but you can't make me 00:06:48.04\00:06:50.11 and you won't court-martial me, either." 00:06:50.11\00:06:52.71 And that'd make him even madder. 00:06:52.71\00:06:53.84 So, but we had to little stand-off. 00:06:53.84\00:06:56.71 But the fact was, 00:06:56.71\00:06:58.28 once, they found out who I was 00:06:58.28\00:07:00.15 and quit asking about the conscientious objector thing, 00:07:00.15\00:07:03.52 we became very close. 00:07:03.52\00:07:04.65 Because they knew, I was there for them. 00:07:04.65\00:07:07.09 I wasn't there to get my tail back home. 00:07:07.09\00:07:10.46 I was there to help all of us get back home, 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.76 which, I think, they all were, too. 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.73 But it was evident to them 00:07:14.73\00:07:18.43 that my whole attitude and focus, 00:07:18.43\00:07:21.97 was on the guys around me, not on myself. 00:07:21.97\00:07:26.21 And probably, the most common question, 00:07:26.21\00:07:27.54 I've had asked me, ever since I got back, 00:07:27.54\00:07:30.38 was, "Well, what would you have done 00:07:30.38\00:07:33.52 if you're the only one, 00:07:33.52\00:07:37.29 guys are needing you over here 00:07:37.29\00:07:38.39 and you've the weapon here and the guy's dead 00:07:38.39\00:07:41.02 and all you gotta do is pick it up and use it." 00:07:41.02\00:07:43.99 And I said, "Well, I'll tell you what I did. 00:07:43.99\00:07:46.70 I prayed every morning that the Lord would not put me 00:07:46.70\00:07:49.73 in a situation 00:07:49.73\00:07:51.27 that I couldn't respond, according to my conscience. 00:07:51.27\00:07:55.00 And for some reason, I never had to make a choice 00:07:55.00\00:07:57.74 between picking up a weapon and killing somebody 00:07:57.74\00:08:01.11 and taking care of the guys I was with." 00:08:01.11\00:08:03.28 So, God rewards faith, there's no doubt about that. 00:08:03.28\00:08:08.12 It was powerful 00:08:10.39\00:08:11.69 to see that kind of stuff happen for 11 months 00:08:11.69\00:08:13.76 when I was over there. 00:08:13.76\00:08:15.09 - So, really, that was religion in the trenches. 00:08:15.09\00:08:17.33 - Spiritual (laughs). 00:08:18.79\00:08:19.89 Yeah. 00:08:21.46\00:08:22.56 Religion, to me, and spiritual connection, 00:08:22.56\00:08:24.87 are two different things. 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.40 (dramatic music) 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.44 I think, and this is not about theology, 00:08:28.44\00:08:33.38 but I, really, think, 00:08:33.38\00:08:34.41 sometimes, religions get in the way 00:08:34.41\00:08:36.85 of our connection with God. 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.01 And to me, it's about Christ and what he's done for us 00:08:39.01\00:08:42.35 and how we can show his love to other people. 00:08:42.35\00:08:46.42 And to me, that's a spiritual connection 00:08:46.42\00:08:48.76 and that's what I wanted to be about and still do, 00:08:48.76\00:08:52.13 even though, the church is very important to me, 00:08:52.13\00:08:54.50 very, very important. 00:08:54.50\00:08:55.46 - And you ended up 00:08:55.46\00:08:56.60 with, I think, quite a burden on that level, 00:08:56.60\00:08:58.40 because we're standing here, today 00:08:58.40\00:09:00.64 in a conscientious objector park. 00:09:00.64\00:09:02.74 (dramatic music) 00:09:02.74\00:09:04.14 - [Janice] That wouldn't be here if it weren't for you. 00:09:04.14\00:09:05.87 This is your brainchild, your dream. 00:09:05.87\00:09:08.98 You, really, wanted to get this going. 00:09:08.98\00:09:11.78 - It almost seems like God came to you, 00:09:11.78\00:09:13.45 like he did to Noah and said, "Build this." 00:09:13.45\00:09:15.35 (Dr. Garver laughs) 00:09:15.35\00:09:16.28 How did it happen? 00:09:16.28\00:09:17.62 - Well, first of all, my wife and I loved to travel. 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.62 And once, our kids got a little older, 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.92 we started traveling all over the country. 00:09:22.92\00:09:24.39 Well, whenever we'd see a sign on interstate, 00:09:24.39\00:09:26.33 veterans park, 00:09:26.33\00:09:27.76 we'd take a detour. 00:09:27.76\00:09:29.30 And we looked at veterans parks all over this country 00:09:29.30\00:09:31.97 and we loved, that was one of our highlights, we'd find. 00:09:31.97\00:09:35.00 And so, I just made mental notes, 00:09:35.00\00:09:36.94 "That's really cool." 00:09:38.14\00:09:39.47 So, one day, it was getting close to the 4th of July 00:09:39.47\00:09:44.45 and we, always, had a big celebration in Collegedale 00:09:44.45\00:09:46.95 on the 4th of July, 00:09:46.95\00:09:48.52 which was, kind of, interesting in and of itself. 00:09:48.52\00:09:51.55 So, I was driving in from town and I thought, 00:09:52.72\00:09:57.79 "It's been a year, since the last 4th of July. 00:09:58.89\00:10:01.80 And as a veteran, 00:10:01.80\00:10:02.86 I have not thought about veterans 00:10:02.86\00:10:04.83 and their contribution to the country, 00:10:04.83\00:10:06.90 we love and live in today. 00:10:06.90\00:10:09.90 What is wrong with me? 00:10:09.90\00:10:12.57 What is wrong with this country? 00:10:12.57\00:10:14.78 People who haven't served, 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.01 I wonder, if they ever think about it." 00:10:16.01\00:10:18.01 And so, I started thinking 00:10:18.81\00:10:20.65 and I said, "If we can get a veterans park in this town, 00:10:20.65\00:10:23.15 maybe, that would help." 00:10:23.15\00:10:25.15 And I got a piece of paper, 00:10:25.15\00:10:26.92 I, actually, have it, it's still at the house, 00:10:26.92\00:10:28.56 a paper sack from a grocery store. 00:10:28.56\00:10:31.83 And I drew some of the ideas, I had from these parks, 00:10:31.83\00:10:35.10 took it to "VFW", 00:10:35.10\00:10:36.60 they said, "Oh yeah, we'll support you on this project." 00:10:36.60\00:10:39.23 (Jim laughs) (Janice laughs) 00:10:39.23\00:10:40.44 So, I took that as a yes 00:10:40.44\00:10:42.00 and I went and I asked 11 gentlemen in the community 00:10:42.00\00:10:45.94 to join me. 00:10:45.94\00:10:47.41 The 12th one said, "No." 00:10:47.41\00:10:48.64 And I said, "We're through." 00:10:48.64\00:10:50.21 I had a plan, it worked out perfect. 00:10:50.21\00:10:53.11 So, those 11 guys, all 11 of 'em, are still on the board. 00:10:53.11\00:10:56.72 Not one guy has quit in 20 years. 00:10:56.72\00:10:59.05 (dramatic music) 00:10:59.05\00:11:00.49 And so, we started sharing the ideas and concepts, 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.39 got the property, given to us. 00:11:02.39\00:11:04.09 (dramatic music) 00:11:04.09\00:11:05.49 And what you see today, is a result of 11 men's work 00:11:05.49\00:11:08.20 over 20 years 00:11:08.20\00:11:09.93 and raising a million dollars. 00:11:09.93\00:11:12.03 And we, only, lost one of our committee members, 00:11:12.03\00:11:17.11 one of our Vietnam veterans died prematurely, 00:11:18.37\00:11:20.48 because of his exposure over there. 00:11:20.48\00:11:22.64 (Dr. Garver clears throat) 00:11:22.64\00:11:23.45 So, it was just a matter of me, 00:11:23.45\00:11:26.51 realizing what it meant to me, if I ever thought about it. 00:11:26.51\00:11:30.95 But I had to think about it 00:11:30.95\00:11:32.22 to understand how important it, really, was. 00:11:32.22\00:11:35.39 And I think, now, I hear people all the time, 00:11:35.39\00:11:38.43 say, "I drive by and see that flag and I'm reminded." 00:11:38.43\00:11:42.90 If you come through the gap over here, 00:11:42.90\00:11:44.57 come in this direction, 00:11:44.57\00:11:45.83 that flag is right in front of you- 00:11:45.83\00:11:47.17 - [Jim] Which is one of the tallest flags 00:11:47.17\00:11:48.47 in the entire state. 00:11:48.47\00:11:49.44 - I think, there's one taller. 00:11:49.44\00:11:51.67 Doggone! 00:11:51.67\00:11:52.57 (everyone laughs) 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.01 Let's redo it, let's put it- 00:11:54.01\00:11:54.91 - It's pretty big. 00:11:54.91\00:11:56.11 - Let's put an extension up there. 00:11:56.11\00:11:56.98 (Jim laughs) 00:11:56.98\00:11:57.81 125 foot. 00:11:57.81\00:11:59.08 The flag is 30x50, 00:11:59.08\00:12:01.45 just about the size of a volleyball court. 00:12:01.45\00:12:03.55 (dramatic music) 00:12:03.55\00:12:05.55 So, that's, really, what happened and it grew. 00:12:05.55\00:12:10.03 We've, actually, added several things 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.43 after we got our key elements in here that we planned on. 00:12:12.43\00:12:16.20 (dramatic music) 00:12:16.20\00:12:17.57 One of 'em was, I don't know, if y'all heard, 00:12:17.57\00:12:19.73 I'm sure, it was national news, 00:12:19.73\00:12:21.40 some of our recruiters 00:12:22.60\00:12:23.64 at the navy station, here, in town, 00:12:23.64\00:12:24.71 got killed five years ago, I think. 00:12:24.71\00:12:28.08 Somebody walked in and killed five of them. 00:12:28.08\00:12:30.98 And so, some of our community members wanted to honor them. 00:12:30.98\00:12:34.32 And back there, is the boots, the M16 and the helmet. 00:12:34.32\00:12:39.05 And that's to the following guys, 00:12:39.05\00:12:40.79 who were killed here in Chattanooga. 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.96 So, that and the female, are the two things 00:12:42.96\00:12:45.56 that we've added in the last few years 00:12:45.56\00:12:49.76 to try to complete the park 00:12:49.76\00:12:51.27 and make it meaningful to the local people, 00:12:51.27\00:12:54.37 not just nationally. 00:12:54.37\00:12:55.70 - The world is full of trouble and chaos, 00:12:57.47\00:13:00.81 but sometimes, the worst turmoil is inside us. 00:13:00.81\00:13:05.01 The Bible promises 00:13:05.01\00:13:06.35 that no matter how sinful, helpless and wounded, 00:13:06.35\00:13:09.15 you are, right now, 00:13:09.15\00:13:11.05 God can fill you with a peace 00:13:11.05\00:13:13.02 that goes beyond all comprehension. 00:13:13.02\00:13:15.92 If you'd like to claim that promise, 00:13:15.92\00:13:18.53 I'd like to send you a pamphlet, 00:13:18.53\00:13:20.23 called "The Promise of Peace". 00:13:20.23\00:13:22.70 It's absolutely free. 00:13:22.70\00:13:24.80 Go to "TalkingDonkeyInternational.org" 00:13:24.80\00:13:27.97 and request offer number 120 to order your copy, today. 00:13:27.97\00:13:32.67 (gentle music) 00:13:32.67\00:13:35.31 This park, though, 00:13:38.11\00:13:39.15 I've been to multiple veterans parks, 00:13:39.15\00:13:42.42 but this one is different. 00:13:42.42\00:13:44.19 This one stands out, 00:13:44.19\00:13:45.59 because it has a focus 00:13:45.59\00:13:48.26 that those other parks don't have, 00:13:48.26\00:13:50.13 that those other parks overlook, in fact. 00:13:50.13\00:13:52.56 And it's very significant that this park is here, 00:13:52.56\00:13:56.50 because of that statue. 00:13:56.50\00:13:59.20 - [Jim] And that man, 00:13:59.20\00:14:00.57 I would guess, 00:14:00.57\00:14:01.90 a large percentage of the country knows in part, 00:14:01.90\00:14:04.31 because of Mel Gibson and "Hacksaw Ridge". 00:14:04.31\00:14:06.51 - [Janice] Right. 00:14:06.51\00:14:08.01 - The central figure in that story. 00:14:08.01\00:14:10.31 Would you share a little of that with us? 00:14:10.31\00:14:12.38 - Yeah, Desmond Doss was, actually, an acquaintance of 00:14:12.38\00:14:15.95 mine. I'd love to say, he was a friend. 00:14:15.95\00:14:18.49 He was, actually, here, in Collegedale a lot 00:14:18.49\00:14:20.52 and just lived up the mountain, here, 00:14:20.52\00:14:21.72 about 50 miles away. 00:14:21.72\00:14:23.36 That was his home. 00:14:23.36\00:14:24.39 But when he chose to be a conscientious objector, 00:14:25.93\00:14:28.03 he took it to the ultimate level. 00:14:28.03\00:14:30.40 - So, that's why- 00:14:30.40\00:14:31.73 - He went to the point where he would not compromise, 00:14:31.73\00:14:34.10 he did not rationalize, 00:14:34.10\00:14:35.97 but he made choices daily. 00:14:36.91\00:14:39.07 And to me, as a teacher for many years, 00:14:39.07\00:14:41.78 the two things I, really, emphasize with kids, 00:14:41.78\00:14:43.98 is you've, always, got a choice 00:14:43.98\00:14:47.28 and it, always, makes a difference. 00:14:47.28\00:14:49.62 And if we can learn that and believe that and act that way, 00:14:49.62\00:14:52.65 then, things will be different, I think. 00:14:52.65\00:14:54.69 You, always, have a choice 00:14:54.69\00:14:56.02 and it always makes a difference. 00:14:56.02\00:14:57.49 But the second one, to me, is so important, 00:14:57.49\00:14:59.89 is rationalization. 00:14:59.89\00:15:01.03 You can rationalize anything. 00:15:01.03\00:15:02.53 And there were several things in that movie 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.00 that are portrayed very nicely 00:15:05.00\00:15:06.37 where he could have rationalized 00:15:06.37\00:15:08.57 and things would've been very different. 00:15:08.57\00:15:10.84 He could have just laid it in his bed and said his prayers 00:15:10.84\00:15:13.74 and he would've had a lot less suffering, 00:15:13.74\00:15:16.71 he could have just touched that gun in the cell 00:15:16.71\00:15:19.88 and rationalized, "Well, I'm not gonna kill anybody, here, 00:15:19.88\00:15:22.85 in the jail." 00:15:22.85\00:15:23.95 I mean, he could have rationalized all the way 00:15:23.95\00:15:25.52 through his journey. 00:15:25.52\00:15:26.49 But guess, what he didn't do? 00:15:26.49\00:15:28.16 He didn't rationalize. 00:15:28.16\00:15:29.36 What a challenge for us today, 00:15:29.36\00:15:30.89 it's so easy to rationalize. 00:15:30.89\00:15:32.96 He was, probably, my inspiration 00:15:32.96\00:15:35.90 to make good choices and not to rationalize. 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.33 - [Jim] Isn't that what today is, a situational ethics? 00:15:38.33\00:15:41.44 (Dr. Garver laughs) 00:15:41.44\00:15:42.50 - Totally, from what I hear (laughs) 00:15:42.50\00:15:44.57 and see once in a while. 00:15:44.57\00:15:46.24 So, being a conscientious objector, 00:15:46.24\00:15:48.11 was, really, what gave him the internal fortitude 00:15:48.11\00:15:53.18 and the desire and the focus and the (indistinct) 00:15:54.52\00:15:55.98 to make those decisions, I think, 00:15:55.98\00:15:57.45 because he is so closely connected to his savior, 00:15:57.45\00:16:00.69 to his God. 00:16:00.69\00:16:02.12 And so, we have, I think, the only monument, 00:16:02.12\00:16:05.66 honoring conscientious objectors in the whole world 00:16:05.66\00:16:08.96 over here. 00:16:08.96\00:16:09.96 And the line in there 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.07 that, really, brings it all home to me, 00:16:11.07\00:16:12.50 is that a conscientious objector is someone, 00:16:12.50\00:16:15.34 who chose to serve honorably 00:16:15.34\00:16:19.41 in harmony with their conscience. 00:16:19.41\00:16:21.91 So, it wasn't someone, who chose not to serve. 00:16:23.01\00:16:25.28 Because by the time, the war ended, 00:16:25.28\00:16:27.65 there were all kinds of ways, 00:16:27.65\00:16:28.85 guys could, actually, become, 00:16:28.85\00:16:30.22 be conscientious objectors 00:16:30.22\00:16:31.79 and go work in a hospital for four years 00:16:31.79\00:16:34.19 and they get rid of their service requirement. 00:16:34.19\00:16:36.96 So, there were things that the government was trying to do 00:16:36.96\00:16:39.53 to allow them to save face, 00:16:39.53\00:16:40.90 because Muhammad Ali made him look, 00:16:40.90\00:16:45.80 it brought a lot of attention to this whole concept. 00:16:45.80\00:16:49.24 (dramatic music) 00:16:49.24\00:16:50.57 So, that monument, actually, says 00:16:50.57\00:16:54.14 what conscientious objector was all about 00:16:55.21\00:16:57.71 and how they truly impacted the war, 00:16:57.71\00:17:00.45 because they would serve and did a good job. 00:17:00.45\00:17:03.05 And it's amazing 00:17:03.05\00:17:04.39 how many people, really, looked up to conscientious objector 00:17:04.39\00:17:07.36 by the time, I got there. 00:17:07.36\00:17:09.29 - It's pretty amazing, 00:17:09.29\00:17:11.03 Desmond Doss wins the highest honor 00:17:11.03\00:17:12.96 that the country can bestow. 00:17:12.96\00:17:14.96 - [Dr. Garver] Absolutely. 00:17:14.96\00:17:15.76 - [Jim] And pretty amazing. 00:17:15.76\00:17:17.47 - I read the quote, I had read it before, 00:17:17.47\00:17:20.07 but I loved seeing it here 00:17:20.07\00:17:21.94 when he received his medal of honor 00:17:21.94\00:17:24.14 that Harry Truman said, 00:17:24.14\00:17:27.11 he viewed, being able to give Doss that honor, 00:17:27.11\00:17:31.01 was a greater honor to him than being president. 00:17:33.35\00:17:36.95 He recognized the character in Desmond Doss. 00:17:36.95\00:17:40.42 - That's powerful, I mean, that is huge. 00:17:40.42\00:17:43.06 - I've forgotten and you, probably, know, 00:17:43.06\00:17:45.76 exactly, how many men did he pull off that ridge? 00:17:45.76\00:17:48.53 - Well, let me me tell you the story behind that. 00:17:48.53\00:17:50.03 - [Janice] 75 or something? 00:17:50.03\00:17:51.03 (Jim laughs) 00:17:51.03\00:17:51.83 - Yeah, there's his citation. 00:17:51.83\00:17:54.20 The records showed, from what I understand, 00:17:55.74\00:17:58.41 it was 125 or 30. 00:17:58.41\00:18:00.81 He thought, it was about 35 or 40, 00:18:00.81\00:18:02.91 was what he wanted to take, 00:18:02.91\00:18:04.05 maybe, take credit for, maybe, with God's help. 00:18:04.05\00:18:06.82 So, they compromised, "We're gonna call it 75." 00:18:06.82\00:18:10.59 And he said, "Okay." 00:18:10.59\00:18:12.29 But they had really good evidence, 00:18:12.29\00:18:14.76 it was more than 75. 00:18:14.76\00:18:17.36 But yeah, he has credit for saving 75 lives 00:18:17.36\00:18:20.80 with the help of the Lord. 00:18:20.80\00:18:22.10 And his mantra up there, 00:18:22.10\00:18:23.87 "God, give me just one more," 00:18:23.87\00:18:26.47 actually, became a mantra for many churches 00:18:26.47\00:18:28.40 all across America for the next year 00:18:28.40\00:18:31.07 and was about "Give me one more soul for the kingdom." 00:18:31.07\00:18:34.38 So, I mean, it's had a huge impact on so many lives 00:18:34.38\00:18:38.18 and it's been fun to see 00:18:38.18\00:18:40.22 how God has used this humble person, 00:18:40.22\00:18:43.69 even years later, to create conversations 00:18:43.69\00:18:47.62 and people, thinking and rethinking. 00:18:47.62\00:18:49.56 - It reminds me, if you had before those battles, 00:18:49.56\00:18:53.33 told him that he was capable of saving 75 plus people, 00:18:53.33\00:18:58.10 he, probably, would've said, "No, I can't do that." 00:18:58.10\00:19:00.37 Just like, we, so often, 00:19:00.37\00:19:01.94 Moses didn't think, he could go and talk to Pharaoh. 00:19:01.94\00:19:04.61 What gives you the ability to do anything heroic is God. 00:19:05.94\00:19:10.31 - And Janice, he was such a small man. 00:19:10.31\00:19:12.01 I'm guessing, 00:19:12.01\00:19:13.42 that almost everybody, he drag off that mountaintop, 00:19:13.42\00:19:14.78 was bigger than he was. - Was bigger than he was. 00:19:14.78\00:19:16.12 - Right, exactly. 00:19:16.12\00:19:17.02 (Jim laughs) 00:19:17.02\00:19:17.82 Exactly, that's for sure. 00:19:17.82\00:19:19.59 Yeah, so, he was a real example. 00:19:19.59\00:19:23.06 'Cause when they put the script out first, 00:19:23.06\00:19:25.19 you might have heard this story, 00:19:25.19\00:19:26.70 Mel Gibson put the script out, 00:19:26.70\00:19:28.30 he had all these Mr. Americas volunteering, 00:19:28.30\00:19:31.90 "Oh man, look!" 00:19:31.90\00:19:33.50 And he just kept rejecting, "Oh, you're too big." 00:19:33.50\00:19:36.14 Because the script makes you think, 00:19:36.14\00:19:37.87 it's gonna be a big, muscular, powerful person. 00:19:37.87\00:19:41.31 But they didn't understand that it was through God's power 00:19:41.31\00:19:45.01 that the whole process was able to take place 00:19:45.01\00:19:47.35 and Desmond's connection to his creator and say- 00:19:47.35\00:19:50.55 - Yeah, yeah. 00:19:50.55\00:19:52.09 - [Dr. Garver] Very, very powerful. 00:19:52.09\00:19:53.36 - I've gotta ask, we're getting a little short on time, 00:19:53.36\00:19:55.86 but "Cobra" helicopter behind me 00:19:55.86\00:19:57.99 and a tank and all these things, 00:19:57.99\00:19:59.66 can you tell us a little, how all that came together, here? 00:19:59.66\00:20:02.00 That's no small feat. 00:20:02.00\00:20:03.33 - [Dr. Garver] (laughs) Right. 00:20:03.33\00:20:04.70 - I wouldn't know, where to even go to find a tank. 00:20:04.70\00:20:07.10 (Jim laughs) 00:20:07.10\00:20:08.94 - Army circle- 00:20:08.94\00:20:10.24 - You know, it doesn't happen at "Walmart", right? 00:20:10.24\00:20:11.47 (Jim laughs) (Janice laughs) 00:20:11.47\00:20:12.31 - You got a computer. 00:20:12.31\00:20:13.31 (everyone laughs) 00:20:13.31\00:20:14.41 Nowadays, it's made lots more simple. 00:20:14.41\00:20:16.41 - [Janice] Do they have tanks on "eBay"? 00:20:16.41\00:20:18.01 (everyone laughs) 00:20:18.01\00:20:19.75 (dramatic music) 00:20:19.75\00:20:21.38 - It is funny how we could do a whole segment 00:20:21.38\00:20:23.95 on the 11 men, I picked in their special jobs, 00:20:23.95\00:20:26.62 that all of them ended up with 00:20:26.62\00:20:28.56 that I knew nothing about their skills, 00:20:28.56\00:20:30.76 well, I had some clue, 00:20:30.76\00:20:32.49 but how they all fit into a specific niche 00:20:32.49\00:20:35.73 and saved all kinds of money. 00:20:35.73\00:20:38.13 So, the lawyer, we had one lawyer on this thing 00:20:39.33\00:20:41.77 and I said, "We need you to get the hardware for us, 00:20:41.77\00:20:45.37 'cause you know, how to research." 00:20:45.37\00:20:47.71 And within two months, he had this one secured. 00:20:47.71\00:20:50.65 We just had to go and get it. 00:20:50.65\00:20:52.15 And it took about another year to get this one, the tank. 00:20:52.15\00:20:55.72 And we just gave up after about six or eight years 00:20:55.72\00:20:59.12 on that one. 00:20:59.12\00:21:00.52 But 10 years later, we were able to get the fighter, 00:21:00.52\00:21:02.29 it's on loan to us from a museum, down in Mobile, Alabama. 00:21:02.29\00:21:05.66 (crickets chirping) 00:21:05.66\00:21:07.03 So, we have to maintain that in a museum standard, 00:21:07.03\00:21:09.93 or they'll come, make us take it back down to Mobile. 00:21:09.93\00:21:13.67 The other two, 00:21:13.67\00:21:14.60 (crickets chirping) 00:21:14.60\00:21:15.97 they care, but they don't check on us. 00:21:15.97\00:21:18.27 (Dr. Garver laughs) 00:21:18.27\00:21:19.97 So, yeah, it was relatively easy, 00:21:19.97\00:21:22.81 because the right person was tasked with that task. 00:21:22.81\00:21:27.65 And so, the other guy was an engineer, 00:21:27.65\00:21:30.45 he did the polls and created all that kind of stuff 00:21:30.45\00:21:32.89 and connected everything. 00:21:32.89\00:21:33.99 And so, God just gave us the right people. 00:21:33.99\00:21:37.43 I mean, a banker, our finance guy 00:21:37.43\00:21:42.46 and a little barbershop guy from Downtown. 00:21:43.60\00:21:45.87 (crickets chirping) 00:21:45.87\00:21:47.17 Barbershop, all he did was cut hair. 00:21:47.17\00:21:48.67 And the guys from "TVA" came in and got their haircut, 00:21:50.14\00:21:52.37 the president of "TVA", "Tennessee Valley Authority", 00:21:52.37\00:21:55.58 one of the most powerful positions in America, 00:21:55.58\00:21:57.95 'cause it's not political. 00:21:57.95\00:21:59.25 Well, they're not elected (laughs). 00:21:59.25\00:22:01.38 (Jim laughs) 00:22:01.38\00:22:03.62 And we'd had renderings made to take different places, 00:22:03.62\00:22:07.19 so, people ask questions about the park 00:22:07.19\00:22:08.76 before we even got started. 00:22:08.76\00:22:10.03 (dramatic music) 00:22:10.03\00:22:11.13 And this guy came in and asked Charlie, 00:22:11.13\00:22:11.79 he says, "What's that? 00:22:11.79\00:22:13.13 Tell me about that picture." 00:22:13.13\00:22:14.56 So, he told me about our dream, 00:22:14.56\00:22:16.36 the park out here. 00:22:16.36\00:22:17.97 And the guy looked at him 00:22:17.97\00:22:19.30 and said, "Well, let me tell you what I'll do for your park. 00:22:19.30\00:22:20.94 We don't have any money we can give you. 00:22:20.94\00:22:22.80 But anytime, you ever need a crane 00:22:22.80\00:22:24.81 of any size, for anything, 00:22:24.81\00:22:27.14 call me two days in advance 00:22:27.14\00:22:28.54 and you'll have what you need." 00:22:28.54\00:22:29.88 (crickets chirping) (dramatic music) 00:22:29.88\00:22:31.51 So, when that tank rolled up on a big, old, 00:22:31.51\00:22:34.45 I mean, a huge trailer 00:22:34.45\00:22:35.78 and there was a huge crane, sitting here, for free! 00:22:35.78\00:22:40.96 (Jim laughs) (Janice laughs) 00:22:41.76\00:22:42.56 The right guy at the right time. 00:22:42.56\00:22:44.93 - Dr. Garver, you shared, 00:22:44.93\00:22:46.33 as we were talking a little bit 00:22:46.33\00:22:47.40 before we started the interview, 00:22:47.40\00:22:49.76 I get the feeling 00:22:49.76\00:22:51.07 that there's been quite a few spiritual lessons 00:22:51.07\00:22:53.10 in this 20-year project for you. 00:22:53.10\00:22:56.30 Would you mind sharing a little bit? 00:22:56.30\00:22:58.31 - God's timing is always perfect, I should say, 00:22:58.31\00:23:00.88 not right, it's perfect. 00:23:00.88\00:23:02.91 I've been trying to get a wellness center built for years 00:23:02.91\00:23:04.88 at "Southern". 00:23:04.88\00:23:05.98 It wasn't gonna happen, 00:23:05.98\00:23:07.18 they're gonna do something else. 00:23:07.18\00:23:08.52 One of the guys on my board, here, who accepted, 00:23:08.52\00:23:12.32 was, also, on the university board, 00:23:12.32\00:23:13.72 they're gonna build something over there. 00:23:13.72\00:23:15.92 And because of our relationship, we developed here, 00:23:15.92\00:23:18.96 the timing was perfect for him 00:23:19.93\00:23:22.53 to walk into the president and ask him a simple question, 00:23:22.53\00:23:26.07 "Does the university need a wellness center, 00:23:26.07\00:23:29.77 or a welcome center?" 00:23:30.57\00:23:31.74 (dramatic music) 00:23:31.74\00:23:32.84 And it was the obvious question, 00:23:32.84\00:23:34.31 the answer was obvious. 00:23:34.31\00:23:36.18 The kids don't need (indistinct), 00:23:36.18\00:23:37.28 but parents might really enjoy it. 00:23:37.28\00:23:38.91 So, the welcome center's plan went down, 00:23:39.91\00:23:43.12 the wellness center is in place. 00:23:43.12\00:23:45.85 And just a little, to me, evidence 00:23:45.85\00:23:49.56 that without the time to develop that relationship 00:23:49.56\00:23:53.06 and this park, being here, 00:23:53.06\00:23:54.96 created an opportunity for the timing on that to be right, 00:23:54.96\00:23:57.93 because the location, it was gonna be first, 00:23:57.93\00:23:59.90 was not gonna be where it is now. 00:23:59.90\00:24:01.80 It was gonna be somewhere else behind the gym. 00:24:01.80\00:24:03.84 So, I mean, everything just mushroomed 00:24:03.84\00:24:06.11 into a perfect scenario 00:24:06.11\00:24:08.68 for the park, for the board, for "Southern", for students. 00:24:08.68\00:24:13.21 And today, it, still, is one of the favorite place 00:24:13.21\00:24:14.85 for people to walk. 00:24:14.85\00:24:16.38 But the greenway was, already, here when we built the park. 00:24:16.38\00:24:19.32 So, it doesn't bring a lot of people back here 00:24:19.32\00:24:21.06 during the day, 00:24:21.06\00:24:22.42 but on the weekends, that tank's packed out with kids. 00:24:22.42\00:24:25.33 I mean, they are climbing over this thing. 00:24:25.33\00:24:27.13 The first three days we had it, 00:24:27.13\00:24:29.93 the hatch was open 00:24:29.93\00:24:31.73 and I'd stand up there for eight hours a day, 00:24:31.73\00:24:34.34 letting people in, one at a time. 00:24:34.34\00:24:35.67 They'd crank the thing up and turn and go, 00:24:35.67\00:24:38.24 but then, we had to lock it down. 00:24:38.24\00:24:39.54 And so, no one's gotten into it since. 00:24:39.54\00:24:41.01 But that, actually, gave people an opportunity 00:24:41.01\00:24:43.35 to feel what it felt like to be in a tank 00:24:43.35\00:24:46.68 and to, actually, depend on God to save them. 00:24:46.68\00:24:50.45 So, I think, God has a plan 00:24:50.45\00:24:54.26 and for him, to bring this together for his glory 00:24:54.26\00:24:57.49 and then for Doss, his death and the timing of that, 00:24:57.49\00:25:01.03 was, actually, perfect 00:25:01.86\00:25:03.53 as far as how it brought us all together, again 00:25:03.53\00:25:07.47 for an addition to our park. 00:25:07.47\00:25:09.57 Because that wasn't gonna happen, until after his death, 00:25:09.57\00:25:14.64 so. - Well, doctor, thank you so much for your time, 00:25:15.98\00:25:17.98 for sharing the story and for your faith. 00:25:17.98\00:25:20.58 - And I can hardly wait to read your book, 00:25:20.58\00:25:22.42 because I'm so lucky- 00:25:22.42\00:25:23.35 - That's right. 00:25:23.35\00:25:24.39 - It's mine, not yours. 00:25:24.39\00:25:25.75 (Jim laughs) 00:25:25.75\00:25:26.59 - Oh, okay. 00:25:26.59\00:25:27.46 - He gave us a copy, 00:25:27.46\00:25:28.76 but we all know, who's getting it first. 00:25:28.76\00:25:30.73 (Dr. Garver laughs) 00:25:30.73\00:25:31.56 - All right. 00:25:31.56\00:25:33.13 Maybe, bring that to me, 00:25:33.13\00:25:34.46 you gotta bring that to me, here. 00:25:34.46\00:25:35.60 We gotta show it on camera, here. 00:25:35.60\00:25:37.93 "Against All Odds", your book, where can they get it?
