00:02:15.53\00:02:17.87 - Oh yeah. 00:02:18.77\00:02:19.83 You can't help it - As I got out 00:02:19.83\00:02:20.64 of the car at the trail head 00:02:20.64\00:02:22.37 and you just breathe. 00:02:23.14\00:02:24.67 I mean, I breathe all the time obviously, 00:02:25.91\00:02:28.21 but I breathed. 00:02:28.21\00:02:31.15 - Yeah, no, you know, when you're in the city 00:02:31.15\00:02:32.78 when you're in all that stuff, you just find yourself 00:02:32.78\00:02:35.98 your whole mind, everything is going continually 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.02 your muscles tight, everything's tight. 00:02:38.02\00:02:40.06 Your brain is tight and 00:02:40.06\00:02:41.62 and you get up here - and you know 00:02:41.62\00:02:42.92 - and you're just like yeah - I get so used to it. 00:02:42.92\00:02:44.06 I'm not even aware of how tense my neck is. 00:02:44.06\00:02:47.40 How on the go, I am pulling in 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.43 and out of parking lots 00:02:49.43\00:02:50.70 cause I got a long list of errands. 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.03 And it's just so normal, you know 00:02:52.03\00:02:55.74 to be at that level of stress and nervous energy, I guess. 00:02:55.74\00:02:59.54 - But you know, you did stop, 00:03:00.41\00:03:02.44 like you're saying you listen 00:03:02.44\00:03:04.38 and hearing nothing other than nature. 00:03:04.38\00:03:07.62 - There's a little Creek. 00:03:07.62\00:03:09.48 In fact, I think there's more than one. 00:03:09.48\00:03:10.99 We passed one and there's another one over here. 00:03:10.99\00:03:13.52 - It's amazingly soothing. 00:03:13.52\00:03:15.32 You know, now you're a birder. 00:03:15.32\00:03:17.29 There's no doubt. 00:03:17.29\00:03:18.66 When you start whipping off the numbers of birds. 00:03:18.66\00:03:20.83 In a good day, how many birds can you find and identify? 00:03:20.83\00:03:24.43 - Well, you know, just a few days ago, 00:03:24.43\00:03:26.10 my husband and I went out on what we call a big day. 00:03:26.10\00:03:29.24 And it's where you start in the morning 00:03:29.24\00:03:31.37 and you go to different habitats. 00:03:31.37\00:03:33.14 So you've got high deserty areas 00:03:33.14\00:03:35.54 around where we live 00:03:35.54\00:03:36.61 but you can easily get up into mountains 00:03:36.61\00:03:38.85 and areas that are called riparian, 00:03:38.85\00:03:41.38 it means it's along water and you hit different areas. 00:03:41.38\00:03:45.22 And we got 108 species. 00:03:45.22\00:03:47.22 - 108. 00:03:47.22\00:03:48.26 - Yes. 00:03:48.26\00:03:49.39 And we weren't even doing hard birding. 00:03:49.39\00:03:52.13 We've done days where we started, 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.00 in fact, we were in place 00:03:54.00\00:03:55.46 at the first spot we wanted to bird before light. 00:03:55.46\00:03:58.83 - I call that a fanatical, that's. 00:03:58.83\00:04:00.40 - That's Steve that's, you know 00:04:00.40\00:04:02.70 I'd rather sleep in, which was the compromise we made. 00:04:02.70\00:04:05.31 I said do we have to be there at dawn? 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.78 - A normal person, by just coming out and relaxing, 00:04:07.78\00:04:10.25 How many birds in one area 00:04:10.25\00:04:11.51 could you identify without killing yourself 00:04:11.51\00:04:13.18 and going around a lot? 00:04:13.18\00:04:14.28 - Let me tell you, we got into birding 00:04:14.28\00:04:16.75 when our younger son was in the fourth grade 00:04:16.75\00:04:18.69 and his teacher was teaching a segment on birds. 00:04:18.69\00:04:22.52 And he had this contest where the kid 00:04:22.52\00:04:25.83 who could identify, learn and identify the most birds 00:04:25.83\00:04:28.86 by the end of that quarter, 00:04:28.86\00:04:30.93 would get a set of walkie-talkies. 00:04:30.93\00:04:32.50 And Lauren decided those walkie-talkies 00:04:32.50\00:04:35.04 were going to be his. 00:04:35.04\00:04:36.47 So I went to Walmart and picked up a bird book 00:04:36.47\00:04:40.58 and a pair of cheap binoculars 00:04:40.58\00:04:42.74 and said, well okay, you know 00:04:42.74\00:04:45.05 we'll go out and we'll help you. 00:04:45.05\00:04:47.05 So after church, like just a couple of days later 00:04:47.05\00:04:51.29 I remembered that our pastor enjoyed birding. 00:04:51.29\00:04:54.92 And so Lauren went up and said, 00:04:54.92\00:04:57.93 "Could we go for out this afternoon? 00:04:57.93\00:05:00.33 Would you take us and show us some birds?" 00:05:00.33\00:05:02.63 And Paul said," Well, sure, I'd love to." 00:05:02.63\00:05:06.13 And I said, well, how many do you think we can get? 00:05:06.13\00:05:08.07 Like just around town, you know, and close by? 00:05:08.07\00:05:11.74 And he goes, "Well, we should easily get 25 or 30." 00:05:11.74\00:05:16.14 You know, I didn't know 00:05:16.14\00:05:17.41 that there were 25 or 30 different species at that point. 00:05:17.41\00:05:20.58 I knew robins. 00:05:20.58\00:05:22.52 I knew a scrub jay, 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.15 although I called them blue jays 00:05:24.15\00:05:26.19 which turned out not to be quite accurate 00:05:26.19\00:05:28.22 they're scrub jays. 00:05:28.22\00:05:30.13 We came home with about 30 birds 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.76 in just maybe four hours of being around town. 00:05:32.76\00:05:36.36 And I was shocked because I had never paid attention. 00:05:36.36\00:05:39.40 I'm always driving to my next errand. 00:05:39.40\00:05:41.70 So busy I wasn't listening to what's out there. 00:05:41.70\00:05:45.14 - Speaking of listening, do you hear that now? 00:05:45.14\00:05:47.84 - Another bird? 00:05:47.84\00:05:49.24 - No, listen. 00:05:49.24\00:05:50.15 It's the wind. 00:05:51.98\00:05:53.62 - Oh! Yeah, through the pine trees. 00:05:53.62\00:05:55.32 I love that sound. 00:05:55.32\00:05:56.48 - And we're up in nature, 00:05:56.48\00:05:57.79 what does wind represent in the Bible? 00:05:57.79\00:06:00.66 - The Holy Spirit. 00:06:00.66\00:06:01.52 - The Holy Spirit. 00:06:01.52\00:06:02.92 And when your in nature, 00:06:02.92\00:06:03.99 the word says, "Come apart a while." 00:06:03.99\00:06:06.26 Why? 00:06:06.26\00:06:07.03 So that we can calm down, 00:06:07.03\00:06:07.86 we can drain all that garbage 00:06:07.86\00:06:09.40 out of our hearts, our minds and everything. 00:06:09.40\00:06:11.47 So we can begin listening to that still small ones. 00:06:11.47\00:06:14.34 - And you know, when you're around your daily life 00:06:14.34\00:06:16.91 if you live, especially in an urban area, 00:06:16.91\00:06:19.54 but even at home, if the television is always going 00:06:19.54\00:06:22.64 if you always have something running in the background 00:06:22.64\00:06:25.85 if you're always in headphones, listening to music 00:06:25.85\00:06:28.68 you can't hear that voice. 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.95 - Very true. 00:06:30.95\00:06:31.79 Very true. 00:06:31.79\00:06:32.59 Now, speaking of coming apart, 00:06:32.59\00:06:33.96 let's get in the boat and let's go out and check out, 00:06:33.96\00:06:35.52 I wanna see some of the Lily pads. 00:06:35.52\00:06:36.99 - All right. 00:06:36.99\00:06:38.09 I saw a few out there that were in bloom. 00:06:38.09\00:06:39.43 (light airy music) 00:06:39.43\00:06:42.36 - I wrote a little book a while back called, 00:06:45.10\00:06:47.04 "Overcoming the 3 D's 00:06:47.04\00:06:49.04 Depression, Discouragement Despair." 00:06:49.04\00:06:50.94 It's helped thousands of people. 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.17 If you'd like a copy 00:06:53.17\00:06:54.38 you can log on to TalkingDonkeyInternational.org 00:06:54.38\00:06:57.35 and for a small gift, it can be yours. 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.88 Please do it today. 00:06:59.88\00:07:01.12 (light airy music) 00:07:01.12\00:07:04.09 Hi. 00:10:00.06\00:10:01.16 And I was looking at some of these things 00:10:01.16\00:10:04.53 and he says, "Come with me by yourselves 00:10:04.53\00:10:08.30 to a desert place, to rest a while." 00:10:08.30\00:10:11.11 To rest, you know. 00:10:11.11\00:10:12.27 To take just a little rest 00:10:12.27\00:10:14.38 but now they've to been other places, 00:10:14.38\00:10:16.75 and I'm sure they'd rested, 00:10:16.75\00:10:17.85 but you know it wasn't going 00:10:17.85\00:10:20.02 to the pleasant watering hole of the day. 00:10:20.02\00:10:23.08 There wasn't going to some city place or location. 00:10:23.08\00:10:25.89 But it was a real quiet, 00:10:25.89\00:10:28.42 Like you said, an area of solitude, OF just relaxing. 00:10:28.42\00:10:33.23 And the thing we can't miss 00:10:33.23\00:10:34.96 Jesus said, "Come apart with me." 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.77 We can come apart. 00:10:38.93\00:10:40.80 You know, we can, we can do all kinds of stuff 00:10:40.80\00:10:43.77 but unless you take Jesus with you, 00:10:43.77\00:10:45.47 it doesn't matter a lot. 00:10:45.47\00:10:47.74 - You won't really have complete rest. 00:10:47.74\00:10:50.28 It's that peace. 00:10:50.28\00:10:51.78 You know, the Bible says, "Peace that passes understanding." 00:10:51.78\00:10:55.25 And I'm sure there are a lot 00:10:55.25\00:10:57.32 of people who come out in nature and feel a sense of peace 00:10:57.32\00:11:01.42 but peace with a capital P is what God gives you. 00:11:01.42\00:11:06.49 And I think you can find it much more easily out here. 00:11:07.86\00:11:10.23 - I know for myself, you know 00:11:10.23\00:11:11.50 I was totally involved in so many things. 00:11:11.50\00:11:14.44 God had brought me out of being an alcoholic 00:11:14.44\00:11:16.27 a drug dealer and a thief and all kinds of things. 00:11:16.27\00:11:19.44 Then I became a Christian 00:11:19.44\00:11:21.01 and I found success in business. 00:11:21.01\00:11:22.94 And boy, was I successful. 00:11:22.94\00:11:25.15 I mean, I was rolling in money. 00:11:25.15\00:11:27.62 I was lobbying on Capitol Hill, in Washington 00:11:27.62\00:11:30.72 rubbing shoulders with the senators 00:11:30.72\00:11:32.25 and congressmen and doing all this stuff. 00:11:32.25\00:11:35.02 But I really started realizing 00:11:35.02\00:11:37.43 I'd lost that peace with Jesus. 00:11:37.43\00:11:40.50 I worked, I worked, I worked. 00:11:40.50\00:11:42.66 I was in real estate. 00:11:42.66\00:11:44.80 I was in the top 4% of Coldwell Bankers 00:11:44.80\00:11:47.20 in all the United States. 00:11:47.20\00:11:48.50 - Wow! 00:11:48.50\00:11:49.34 - And I found that, 00:11:49.34\00:11:50.64 hey, I could be writing a contract at midnight. 00:11:50.64\00:11:53.58 You know, I'd do all these things. 00:11:53.58\00:11:55.88 And the problem is that doesn't get you 00:11:55.88\00:12:00.05 that time with Christ. 00:12:01.22\00:12:02.85 It doesn't get you that relaxation with Christ. 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.79 - No, it doesn't. 00:12:05.79\00:12:06.92 And we can fill our lives with so much, 00:12:06.92\00:12:10.03 you know just like you said, 00:12:10.03\00:12:12.09 sometimes it seems like for every item 00:12:12.09\00:12:14.00 on my list that I cross off, I've added two or three more. 00:12:14.00\00:12:17.50 The list never gets shorter. 00:12:17.50\00:12:19.07 Unless I make time. 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.90 Schedule time where 00:12:21.90\00:12:24.81 I'm going to spend an hour with my "Bible" 00:12:24.81\00:12:27.91 and you might think I can't take an hour out of my day. 00:12:27.91\00:12:30.85 There's so much to do. 00:12:30.85\00:12:32.68 And there are way too many days that I do that. 00:12:32.68\00:12:36.82 But I think especially, 00:12:36.82\00:12:37.89 that's why it's so good to come out here. 00:12:37.89\00:12:39.79 A place like this. 00:12:39.79\00:12:41.72 Because you can't be doing those other things. 00:12:41.72\00:12:44.96 You don't have to think about business or your to do list. 00:12:44.96\00:12:49.23 Have I ever told you about the book I read recently? 00:12:50.87\00:12:55.00 "The Three Day Effect"? 00:12:55.00\00:12:56.71 - No, I think you'd briefly mentioned it. 00:12:58.04\00:13:00.11 - This is what I'm talking about. 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.51 A woman named Florence Williams. 00:13:03.51\00:13:05.08 She writes, she's a science writer. 00:13:05.08\00:13:07.45 And she knew from, I guess, anecdotal evidence 00:13:07.45\00:13:12.52 river raft guides, backpackers, 00:13:13.32\00:13:16.09 who all talked about the effect of being out in nature. 00:13:16.09\00:13:19.73 And they all mentioned this third day magic. 00:13:19.73\00:13:23.30 Some of them called it 00:13:23.30\00:13:25.10 and where you just really, 00:13:25.10\00:13:27.40 have finally gotten into a different rhythm 00:13:27.40\00:13:30.77 and let go of everything that was tying you down at home. 00:13:30.77\00:13:34.68 But she wanted to know, is there really something to it? 00:13:36.01\00:13:39.18 So she got some scientists. 00:13:39.18\00:13:41.38 And they developed some portable equipment. 00:13:41.38\00:13:43.85 She went out with two different groups. 00:13:44.92\00:13:47.12 One is a group that works 00:13:47.12\00:13:49.79 with women who have been traumatized, 00:13:49.79\00:13:52.73 whether through addiction, domestic violence, trafficking 00:13:52.73\00:13:56.70 and they take these women out into nature. 00:13:56.70\00:14:00.44 And then another group was run by veterans 00:14:00.44\00:14:04.04 and they take these guys out, 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.24 who are all suffering from PTSD 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.78 and they take them out rock climbing 00:14:08.78\00:14:10.61 and hiking and cause guys like that a little bit more. 00:14:10.61\00:14:14.88 I think the women in their group get pampered a little bit. 00:14:14.88\00:14:18.39 - You'd like that part, right? 00:14:18.39\00:14:19.22 - Oh, you bet, 00:14:19.22\00:14:20.02 You bet I'd be at the spa. 00:14:20.02\00:14:22.69 But they talked about that same thing. 00:14:22.69\00:14:26.43 They said the first day, 00:14:26.43\00:14:28.40 everybody's actually still a little tense 00:14:28.40\00:14:30.33 because this is new territory. 00:14:30.33\00:14:31.70 They're doing something out of their comfort zone. 00:14:31.70\00:14:34.14 They're not sure, 00:14:34.14\00:14:35.30 should I have come? 00:14:35.30\00:14:36.64 Some of them had to get talked into going on these trips. 00:14:36.64\00:14:39.21 But the second day they begin to relax. 00:14:40.31\00:14:44.11 And they said the third day, 00:14:44.11\00:14:46.31 they're finally talking to each other, 00:14:46.31\00:14:48.55 making new connections with people. 00:14:48.55\00:14:50.95 Talking about things 00:14:52.12\00:14:53.46 that they never would have talked about at home. 00:14:53.46\00:14:55.69 So what she did with these scientists, 00:14:56.79\00:14:59.33 they actually had these caps, EEG caps. 00:15:00.46\00:15:03.47 Portable stuff, they had in a tent a whole lab 00:15:03.47\00:15:06.60 where they could analyze. 00:15:06.60\00:15:08.00 They were doing blood pressure. 00:15:08.00\00:15:09.87 They were measuring heart rates. 00:15:09.87\00:15:12.34 They were watching brainwave patterns. 00:15:12.34\00:15:15.61 and seeing if the three day effect was real or not. 00:15:15.61\00:15:18.68 And they found 00:15:18.68\00:15:19.51 - You got a little bug 00:15:19.51\00:15:20.58 on your neck. - I could feel it 00:15:20.58\00:15:21.28 - There you go. You're 00:15:21.28\00:15:22.08 so lucky that I'm not leaping 00:15:22.08\00:15:23.35 out of this canoe and tipping the whole thing over. 00:15:23.35\00:15:26.29 - I knew how bad it was. 00:15:26.29\00:15:27.42 And I said, well, shall I tell you, 00:15:27.42\00:15:28.59 and I though no. 00:15:28.59\00:15:29.49 You did good. 00:15:29.49\00:15:30.56 - It's the one thing in nature I do not like 00:15:30.56\00:15:32.96 - Bugs, huh? 00:15:32.96\00:15:33.80 - Bugs. 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.30 But she found that there really is 00:15:35.30\00:15:38.47 a three-day effect. 00:15:38.47\00:15:40.57 That-- 00:15:40.57\00:15:41.40 - A three day effect. 00:15:41.40\00:15:42.57 - heart, on the third day, 00:15:42.57\00:15:44.41 you can measure the difference in heart rates, 00:15:44.41\00:15:48.71 in blood pressure, in brainwave. 00:15:48.71\00:15:52.58 Now she was talking about scientific things, 00:15:52.58\00:15:54.92 you know, alpha waves and theta waves. 00:15:54.92\00:15:58.15 And you know, that was literally over my head, 00:15:58.15\00:16:01.49 not just in my head, 00:16:01.49\00:16:03.16 but the point was about the third day 00:16:03.16\00:16:07.30 they began having brainwave patterns that were, 00:16:07.30\00:16:11.13 I think it was more theta than alpha 00:16:11.13\00:16:13.00 but don't hold me to that. 00:16:13.00\00:16:14.64 But their brains were in a spot where they were no longer 00:16:14.64\00:16:19.61 that focusing anxious kind of thoughts 00:16:19.61\00:16:22.48 the to-do list kind of thoughts. 00:16:22.48\00:16:24.61 It was where they say your mind is wandering. 00:16:25.71\00:16:29.48 You've relaxed enough 00:16:29.48\00:16:31.59 that you've begun to literally start thinking 00:16:31.59\00:16:35.79 about other things. 00:16:35.79\00:16:36.89 - You're not attached to that next to do list. 00:16:36.89\00:16:39.16 - Right. 00:16:39.16\00:16:40.20 - You let go of them. - And of course 00:16:40.20\00:16:41.50 creativity happens when your brain is in those waves 00:16:41.50\00:16:45.03 because that was another thing they had noticed 00:16:45.03\00:16:47.07 is that, people who took at least three days 00:16:47.07\00:16:49.70 out in nature, 00:16:49.70\00:16:51.67 came back, not just physically refreshed 00:16:51.67\00:16:55.11 but mentally refreshed and felt much more creative. 00:16:55.11\00:16:58.81 Another thing they did, they gave them tests before 00:17:00.42\00:17:05.32 and after. 00:17:05.32\00:17:06.25 They did word puzzles, they did number puzzles. 00:17:07.46\00:17:12.53 Things like giving you a string of words, 00:17:13.60\00:17:17.07 anywhere five to seven words 00:17:17.07\00:17:19.40 and then telling you now remember those. 00:17:19.40\00:17:21.87 And then a couple of minutes later coming back 00:17:21.87\00:17:23.91 and saying now what were those words I gave you? 00:17:23.91\00:17:27.11 And seeing if you could remember the pattern. 00:17:27.11\00:17:29.74 They did things like, 00:17:31.01\00:17:32.58 count backwards for one minute 00:17:33.38\00:17:37.35 from start at thousand and count backwards by sevens. 00:17:37.35\00:17:41.99 And they would see how far someone could get 00:17:43.36\00:17:45.53 in the space of a minute. 00:17:45.53\00:17:46.76 - Ooh, wow! 00:17:46.76\00:17:47.83 - And some of them didn't do well at all. 00:17:47.83\00:17:50.93 Like could maybe get down three numbers 00:17:52.03\00:17:56.04 three groups of seven down in the space of a minute. 00:17:56.04\00:17:59.64 Then at the end they did the same type of test, 00:18:00.81\00:18:05.18 not identical. 00:18:05.18\00:18:07.62 So it's not like you, 00:18:07.62\00:18:08.92 Oh yeah, I did that same string of words before, 00:18:08.92\00:18:12.15 or that same number pattern. 00:18:12.15\00:18:13.82 They would do it by a different number pattern. 00:18:13.82\00:18:16.46 And in fact, three days later 00:18:16.46\00:18:19.29 when they were doing the new tests 00:18:19.29\00:18:21.60 they made them just slightly harder. 00:18:21.60\00:18:24.27 And yet people were scoring two and three times better. 00:18:24.27\00:18:28.07 - Really? 00:18:28.07\00:18:28.97 - Yes. 00:18:28.97\00:18:29.80 Their memory was better. 00:18:29.80\00:18:32.14 They could focus better. 00:18:32.14\00:18:34.71 So they were able to actually prove scientifically 00:18:34.71\00:18:38.78 that nature has a healing effect. 00:18:40.22\00:18:42.35 - Wow! 00:18:43.18\00:18:44.49 - Not only that they said about the third day, 00:18:44.49\00:18:46.92 you know I mentioned those veterans 00:18:46.92\00:18:48.39 who began finally opening up and talking, 00:18:48.39\00:18:51.43 because they were saying nature is the best therapy. 00:18:51.43\00:18:54.20 One of the guides said, "A week in the wilderness 00:18:54.20\00:18:56.43 is worth a year of therapy." 00:18:56.43\00:18:58.53 And they proved that was really true 00:18:59.70\00:19:01.30 because around it campfire at night. 00:19:01.30\00:19:05.37 The third night these guys started talking about, 00:19:05.37\00:19:09.84 I came back from my second tour in Iraq 00:19:09.84\00:19:13.35 and my wife said, I wasn't the same guy. 00:19:13.35\00:19:16.42 And she left. 00:19:16.42\00:19:17.95 I lost my job. 00:19:17.95\00:19:19.59 I was drinking too much. 00:19:19.59\00:19:21.42 I didn't want to leave the house. 00:19:21.42\00:19:23.36 Things like that. 00:19:23.36\00:19:24.59 And here they were admitting that to each other 00:19:24.59\00:19:27.60 and supporting each other. 00:19:27.60\00:19:29.80 And they carried it over even when they went home 00:19:29.80\00:19:33.13 because some of those guys stayed in touch. 00:19:33.13\00:19:35.50 She followed up with them six months later. 00:19:35.50\00:19:38.31 And some of those guys said, like one of them 00:19:38.31\00:19:41.48 he said his wife had, she rode rodeo. 00:19:41.48\00:19:45.51 And in fact, when he had first joined the military 00:19:45.51\00:19:48.52 she bought a horse to have something to do 00:19:48.52\00:19:51.59 because she knew she was going to miss him. 00:19:51.59\00:19:53.39 She knew it was going to be a hard adjustment. 00:19:53.39\00:19:55.22 She bought herself a horse and began doing rodeos. 00:19:55.22\00:19:59.36 When he came back, he would barely leave the house. 00:19:59.36\00:20:03.16 When he got back from that trip with the veterans group 00:20:04.53\00:20:08.27 he said, "You know, I was outside my comfort zone 00:20:08.27\00:20:12.11 but if I can do that, I can go with her sometimes. 00:20:12.11\00:20:16.91 You know, that's her thing, but I can support her." 00:20:16.91\00:20:19.85 So he began going with her, 00:20:19.85\00:20:21.95 even though he didn't really want to be around people. 00:20:21.95\00:20:25.19 And he didn't really want to go someplace new 00:20:25.19\00:20:27.56 but he began doing it 00:20:27.56\00:20:28.79 because that trip out backpacking helped. 00:20:29.89\00:20:32.69 There was a psychologist, 00:20:34.30\00:20:35.73 a social psychologist that she quoted 00:20:35.73\00:20:38.23 because the scientist, Florence Williams 00:20:39.40\00:20:42.90 the science writer, 00:20:42.90\00:20:44.17 she said, "What do you do 00:20:44.17\00:20:46.21 If you have family, you have a job. 00:20:46.21\00:20:48.74 You don't live anywhere near real wilderness. 00:20:48.74\00:20:51.55 How do you carry that over?" 00:20:51.55\00:20:53.21 The social psychologist who had also been studying nature 00:20:54.68\00:20:58.55 and its effect on people's emotions. 00:20:58.55\00:21:01.22 She said, "You can find it anywhere." 00:21:01.22\00:21:03.36 She said she tells people to go out 00:21:04.56\00:21:07.86 and look for moments of awe, 00:21:07.86\00:21:10.10 whether that is just seeing a flower box 00:21:12.10\00:21:15.07 on the sidewalk, as you're walking to work and noticing it 00:21:15.07\00:21:20.14 or finding a park and going for a walk, 00:21:21.21\00:21:23.81 taking your dog for a walk every day. 00:21:23.81\00:21:26.31 And instead of just marching along 00:21:26.31\00:21:27.68 thinking about what you have to get done tomorrow. 00:21:27.68\00:21:30.52 Notice your surroundings. 00:21:30.52\00:21:32.79 Notice the sunset. 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.56 Those are moments of awe. 00:21:34.56\00:21:36.19 - I've written in my Bible this thought, 00:21:36.19\00:21:37.96 either you come apart and rest awhile 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.83 or you'll come apart. 00:21:40.83\00:21:42.16 - Yes. 00:21:43.06\00:21:44.33 - I mean that, that's what you're saying. 00:21:44.33\00:21:45.47 That's what really happens. 00:21:45.47\00:21:47.04 You need to come and spend that time with God. 00:21:47.04\00:21:49.87 Spend that time out in nature, which you know 00:21:49.87\00:21:51.81 we've talked about before. 00:21:51.81\00:21:52.81 It's kind of God's second book. 00:21:52.81\00:21:55.28 Matter of fact, I had a Matthew 11:29 00:21:55.28\00:21:57.18 it says, "Learn in me 00:21:57.18\00:21:58.78 I am gentle and lowly in heart 00:21:58.78\00:22:00.28 and you will find rest into your souls." 00:22:00.28\00:22:03.35 Rest into your souls. 00:22:03.35\00:22:04.42 I mean, that's amazing, you know, 00:22:04.42\00:22:05.62 that we can find rest in God. 00:22:05.62\00:22:09.49 - And into our inner being, our core and just relax 00:22:09.49\00:22:14.56 because God's got it. 00:22:15.20\00:22:16.60 - Now, one of the things, you know, as you get out in nature 00:22:16.60\00:22:19.90 what I've seen is it helps you rest too. 00:22:19.90\00:22:23.77 Physically helps you get sleep. 00:22:23.77\00:22:26.24 Today I think there are more people-- 00:22:26.24\00:22:28.01 - Yes, they found that they all began sleeping better. 00:22:28.01\00:22:30.45 - There are more people that are taking sleeping pills 00:22:30.45\00:22:33.28 and everything else, 00:22:33.28\00:22:34.42 just trying to get a little bit of sleep 00:22:34.42\00:22:36.75 and that doesn't really work. 00:22:36.75\00:22:38.45 But if you start really sleeping, 00:22:38.45\00:22:40.62 I mean there's tremendous amount of studies 00:22:40.62\00:22:42.92 to show what sleep really does. 00:22:42.92\00:22:44.59 You end up with a sleep deprivation 00:22:46.39\00:22:49.06 and it hurts your diet. 00:22:49.06\00:22:50.87 It hurts your attitude. 00:22:50.87\00:22:53.00 It hurts everything in life. 00:22:53.00\00:22:54.50 Your whole health system goes down the flusher as well. 00:22:54.50\00:22:57.37 - Well, I think you know of our younger son Lauren, 00:22:57.37\00:23:01.01 he does sleep studies. 00:23:01.01\00:23:03.21 He works at a hospital and that's his job. 00:23:03.21\00:23:05.71 And he said, if people understood the effect that sleep 00:23:05.71\00:23:10.79 has or the lack of it. 00:23:11.45\00:23:12.12 - The lack of it, yeah. 00:23:12.12\00:23:13.19 - On them physically and emotionally, 00:23:13.19\00:23:14.72 he said, they've taken much more seriously. 00:23:14.72\00:23:16.99 - Well, one of the things that people find, 00:23:16.99\00:23:19.23 people have such trouble with weight gain. 00:23:19.23\00:23:21.83 If they got better sleep, the weight gain would go down. 00:23:21.83\00:23:25.20 And here's another interesting thing too 00:23:25.20\00:23:26.80 is basically if you quit eating late at night 00:23:26.80\00:23:31.54 if you have that last meal of the day four hours 00:23:31.54\00:23:34.01 before you go to sleep, you will be able to sleep better. 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.71 And guess what? 00:23:36.71\00:23:37.78 That last meal doesn't go to fat. 00:23:37.78\00:23:39.48 And it goes to more energy, 00:23:39.48\00:23:41.02 which is a tremendous benefit as well. 00:23:41.02\00:23:43.85 - Well, it's also related mental, physical spiritual. 00:23:43.85\00:23:47.42 There was something that really struck me 00:23:48.69\00:23:50.76 in the "Three Day Effect" 00:23:50.76\00:23:52.09 the book. 00:23:52.09\00:23:52.99 In the section talking about what you can do 00:23:54.30\00:23:57.33 no matter where you live, this social psychologist said 00:23:57.33\00:24:01.57 "I can't always get away for a week." 00:24:01.57\00:24:03.74 You know, how many people can afford to do that, 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.74 to take a week off whenever they need it. 00:24:06.74\00:24:09.81 She said her goal, she had started taking 00:24:09.81\00:24:13.21 just setting aside a 24 hour period every week. 00:24:13.21\00:24:17.09 I thought, well, that's not an original idea, 00:24:18.19\00:24:21.29 because I think in the Bible 00:24:21.29\00:24:24.03 God had that idea first. 00:24:24.03\00:24:26.53 - Yeah. 00:24:26.53\00:24:27.60 Matter of fact, I was thinking about that. 00:24:27.60\00:24:29.00 Let me read you a text. 00:24:29.00\00:24:30.37 " Thus, the heavens and the earth were completed. 00:24:30.37\00:24:33.44 And by the seventh day 00:24:33.44\00:24:34.54 God had finished the work he'd been doing. 00:24:34.54\00:24:36.60 And on that day, he rested from all of his work." 00:24:36.60\00:24:39.57 God rested on that day. 00:24:39.57\00:24:41.21 And then, then his Eden couple joined in with him 00:24:41.21\00:24:44.55 and in sharing that beautiful day of rest, 00:24:44.55\00:24:47.42 then later on the apostle, Paul 00:24:47.42\00:24:49.02 makes some interesting statement in the book of Hebrews. 00:24:49.02\00:24:51.12 You know he said, 00:24:51.12\00:24:52.15 he weaves together kind of three concepts. 00:24:52.15\00:24:54.12 The concept of we have a rest from enemies, 00:24:54.12\00:24:57.23 we have a physical rest and we have a rest in Jesus Christ. 00:24:59.29\00:25:03.60 And then you think about Christ 00:25:03.60\00:25:05.23 talked about many things, especially in Isaiah. 00:25:05.23\00:25:08.74 Now he talks about in Isaiah 66, 00:25:08.74\00:25:11.37 he said, look, here's the situation. 00:25:11.37\00:25:13.84 When we're in heaven, we will have a special day 00:25:13.84\00:25:17.18 every seventh day to come together 00:25:17.18\00:25:20.12 with God and from one new moon to another, every 30 days. 00:25:20.12\00:25:23.22 So 30 days and seven days, one Sabbath 00:25:23.22\00:25:25.45 and we'll all come together to worship God 00:25:25.45\00:25:28.16 and to join together with him. 00:25:28.16\00:25:30.39 And isn't it interesting 00:25:30.39\00:25:32.63 that through all of this God has a plan 00:25:32.63\00:25:36.90 a total plan to come apart a while to rest in him 00:25:36.90\00:25:40.34 to spend time with him. 00:25:40.34\00:25:41.97 You know, especially once a week 00:25:41.97\00:25:43.64 and scientists talk about there's a circadian rhythm 00:25:43.64\00:25:46.71 you know, in nature a seven day cycle. 00:25:46.71\00:25:50.18 Isn't it interesting when we follow God 00:25:50.18\00:25:52.65 when we learn of him and the things he has prepared for us. 00:25:52.65\00:25:56.58 (gentle piano music) 00:25:56.58\00:25:59.75 -
