Hello, and welcome to Coronavirus Report. 00:00:09.44\00:00:12.11 We are so glad to have you here with us. 00:00:12.61\00:00:14.81 I'm in the presence of Pastor Stephen Bohr, 00:00:14.91\00:00:18.11 speaker, director, president of Secrets Unsealed, 00:00:18.15\00:00:21.55 and Dr. Milton Teske who is the health officer for Kings County, 00:00:21.92\00:00:25.35 and also happens to be the chairman of our board. 00:00:25.45\00:00:28.22 And I'm C.A. Murray. 00:00:28.26\00:00:29.59 And we're trying to give you a perspective 00:00:29.62\00:00:32.66 that is particularly Christian. 00:00:32.69\00:00:34.70 There is so much talk about coronavirus, 00:00:35.40\00:00:37.37 so many things that are being said, 00:00:37.40\00:00:39.03 but we're trying to give you just a little something extra, 00:00:39.07\00:00:41.77 a little something that you may not hear 00:00:41.80\00:00:43.47 on the regular news. 00:00:43.51\00:00:44.84 Dr. Teske is steeped in the knowledge in this work. 00:00:45.21\00:00:49.18 And as a Christian physician, he brings a very unique 00:00:49.21\00:00:53.52 and wonderful perspective 00:00:53.55\00:00:55.55 that we like to mine each and every week 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.59 when you're here with us. 00:00:57.62\00:00:59.29 So we want to thank you for joining us today. 00:00:59.32\00:01:01.26 And hopefully we can say something that will be of 00:01:01.29\00:01:03.32 interest and import to you. 00:01:03.36\00:01:05.89 Good doctor, I want to start of... 00:01:05.99\00:01:08.60 In fact, let's have a word of prayer, 00:01:08.80\00:01:10.13 and then we'll launch off into our first question. 00:01:10.17\00:01:12.40 Father God, again we thank You and praise You 00:01:12.60\00:01:14.47 for this opportunity to give information 00:01:14.50\00:01:16.97 from a Christian perspective given from men who have 00:01:17.21\00:01:20.38 dedicated their lives and their hearts to You. 00:01:20.41\00:01:23.04 Speak through us so that what we say can be of value 00:01:23.08\00:01:26.48 to Your people. 00:01:26.51\00:01:27.85 In Jesus' name, amen. 00:01:27.88\00:01:29.48 Amen. 00:01:29.52\00:01:30.85 Each week when we come we've got a new term, 00:01:30.89\00:01:33.59 or new word, or something new that you sort of spring on us. 00:01:33.62\00:01:36.96 And this week's new word is Kawasaki. 00:01:37.16\00:01:41.66 Now I had heard about this syndrome, of course, 00:01:41.86\00:01:44.33 keeping tabs on what happens in New York, 00:01:44.53\00:01:46.77 but I didn't hear the name until just a few minutes ago 00:01:46.80\00:01:49.14 when we were talking together. 00:01:49.17\00:01:50.74 It is Kawasaki. 00:01:50.77\00:01:52.11 Not the motorcycle, not the automobile. 00:01:52.14\00:01:54.91 But Kawasaki; explain what that is and the affect that it 00:01:55.44\00:01:59.11 seems to be having on young people. 00:01:59.15\00:02:00.85 Okay, so Kawasaki disease was first described by Kawasaki 00:02:01.38\00:02:05.99 and gave it his name. 00:02:06.02\00:02:07.46 But it's been around for a while, so it's not a 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.59 new disease, but it's new in its association 00:02:10.63\00:02:14.30 with the coronavirus, with this COVID-19. 00:02:14.33\00:02:17.53 It's a syndrome, or it's a group of symptoms that come together, 00:02:19.07\00:02:22.87 and it affects children primarily, 00:02:22.90\00:02:24.91 although it can affect adults. 00:02:24.94\00:02:26.54 For some reason most all the victims of Kawasaki 00:02:26.74\00:02:30.75 are children, often under 5 years of age 00:02:30.78\00:02:33.92 makes up the largest group of them. 00:02:33.95\00:02:35.95 And it can be quite serious and fatal in cases. 00:02:36.32\00:02:39.95 Although, again, it's a fairly rare syndrome. 00:02:40.86\00:02:43.53 It has to do with the body's immune system being triggered 00:02:44.89\00:02:49.26 and fired up in a certain way that it starts attacking 00:02:49.30\00:02:52.17 the body and causing this group of symptoms. 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.77 And of course, some of the severe complications 00:02:55.34\00:02:58.67 that can go with it that we're seeing now with this. 00:02:58.71\00:03:01.48 Nobody understands exactly how and why it's triggered, 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.71 but it's associated with different viral diseases. 00:03:05.75\00:03:08.65 Sometimes Epstein Barr virus infection 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.22 can trigger Kawasaki disease. 00:03:11.25\00:03:13.39 Sometimes an adenovirus. 00:03:13.42\00:03:15.16 Sometimes some of the older coronaviruses that have 00:03:15.19\00:03:18.09 been around for a long time. 00:03:18.13\00:03:19.69 But just recently they've been realizing that 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.40 they're seeing quite a number of children 00:03:22.43\00:03:24.97 that have this Kawasaki disease associated with the coronavirus, 00:03:25.13\00:03:29.67 this new COVID-19 virus. 00:03:29.70\00:03:33.48 So here's what it is. 00:03:34.21\00:03:36.71 It's a group of symptoms. 00:03:37.25\00:03:39.45 There is no blood test, no lab test, we can do 00:03:39.48\00:03:42.62 to say you're Kawasaki positive or negative. 00:03:42.65\00:03:45.29 So it's not... 00:03:45.39\00:03:46.72 It makes it difficult to diagnose because today 00:03:46.76\00:03:49.66 doctors want to test for everything and want to 00:03:49.69\00:03:52.66 just let the lab tell them you have got it or don't have it. 00:03:52.69\00:03:56.13 This takes clinical acumen. 00:03:56.46\00:04:00.80 You've got to actually talk to the patient, look at them, 00:04:00.84\00:04:04.71 and see what their symptoms are. 00:04:04.74\00:04:06.64 Now actually it's quite recognizable. 00:04:07.34\00:04:10.95 And hopefully if you have children, if one of them 00:04:11.08\00:04:15.38 should start to be affected with this, you would recognize it 00:04:15.42\00:04:18.09 and direct them to appropriate medical care right away. 00:04:18.12\00:04:21.69 It is a disease where its treatment 00:04:22.32\00:04:25.49 does make a difference. 00:04:25.53\00:04:26.86 There is some treatment for it. 00:04:26.90\00:04:28.23 And treatment can significantly lessen the serious outcomes 00:04:28.26\00:04:33.37 to do with the heart and even fatalities. 00:04:33.40\00:04:37.31 You'll want to remember these and look them up 00:04:38.94\00:04:42.31 and keep an eye out for them if you have children. 00:04:42.34\00:04:45.18 Noticeable there's a fever. 00:04:47.02\00:04:49.32 Fever can come and go at different times. 00:04:49.35\00:04:51.75 Well, this isn't anything new or different from anything else. 00:04:51.79\00:04:55.32 The more characteristic things are you get inflammation 00:04:55.96\00:04:59.09 of the mucus membranes and you start to 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.40 get, like, conjunctivitis. 00:05:01.43\00:05:02.80 The eyes kind of get red and watery. 00:05:02.83\00:05:05.43 But it affects the mucus membranes in the mouth. 00:05:06.63\00:05:09.00 They can become inflamed and erythematous. 00:05:09.04\00:05:13.04 The lips; the lips become very red. 00:05:14.18\00:05:16.85 You know, cherry red lips. 00:05:16.88\00:05:18.78 Sometimes there will be fissures or cracks on the lips as well. 00:05:18.81\00:05:22.68 So that's a fairly characteristic look. 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.79 The mucus membranes on down into the gut. 00:05:26.59\00:05:30.66 And they often have very painful or sever diarrhea 00:05:31.09\00:05:34.16 associated with it. 00:05:34.20\00:05:35.86 So you've got those. 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.40 There's lymph nodes that form in the neck right here, 00:05:37.43\00:05:41.04 although they can in other parts of the body as well, 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.07 but particularly those little bumps that swell up 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.51 and are quite tender in the neck area is associated with it. 00:05:45.54\00:05:48.68 And then there is the rash. 00:05:49.38\00:05:51.81 And it's not like most rashes, little bumps and spots. 00:05:51.85\00:05:54.78 It's just the face turns really red. 00:05:55.35\00:05:58.69 Erythema is what we call it. 00:05:58.72\00:06:00.06 But the skin just turns really red. 00:06:00.09\00:06:03.36 And together with that bright red lips. 00:06:03.59\00:06:06.23 You can get that redness on the palms of the hands, 00:06:06.49\00:06:09.33 or the soles of the feet will often turn red. 00:06:09.36\00:06:12.10 On the hands and feet, when you get that redness there, 00:06:12.53\00:06:15.10 a lot of times there's also where the skin starts peeling 00:06:15.40\00:06:20.78 around the fingernails. 00:06:20.81\00:06:22.14 Kind of the skin around there starts peeling back there. 00:06:22.18\00:06:24.21 Or on the toenails, the same thing there. 00:06:24.25\00:06:26.68 And so, these are the outside things that we often see 00:06:27.72\00:06:31.72 associated with this. 00:06:31.75\00:06:34.02 Now the tricky part is, not everybody gets all of those. 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.16 And of course, you know, a lot of those are sort of common. 00:06:38.83\00:06:42.26 I mean, how many things cause diarrhea? 00:06:42.30\00:06:43.93 How many things cause a fever? 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.53 How many things cause conjunctivitis? 00:06:45.57\00:06:47.57 You know, so there's a lot of things there, 00:06:48.04\00:06:50.07 so it's a disease that is sometimes missed. 00:06:50.64\00:06:53.21 But it's one we don't want to miss because 00:06:53.24\00:06:55.48 there is treatment for it. 00:06:55.74\00:06:57.45 And the concern with Kawasaki is not those outward symptoms 00:06:57.95\00:07:02.35 that we've just talked about. 00:07:02.38\00:07:03.72 Because those, you know, they'll go away with time. 00:07:03.75\00:07:06.99 But it affects the blood vessels. 00:07:07.32\00:07:10.83 Now we've talked before about coronavirus attacking, 00:07:11.39\00:07:14.66 you know, the lining of the arteries here. 00:07:14.70\00:07:17.70 But this creates what we call vasculitis. 00:07:18.27\00:07:21.20 In other words, the immune system 00:07:21.24\00:07:23.17 starts attacking the arteries. 00:07:23.27\00:07:26.17 And as it attacks these arteries, this vasculitis, 00:07:26.78\00:07:29.84 this inflammation of the arteries, it causes 00:07:29.88\00:07:33.31 them to dilate. 00:07:33.35\00:07:34.68 Because they dilate, they particularly can affect 00:07:37.29\00:07:39.62 the arteries in the heart. 00:07:39.65\00:07:41.19 The most serious place. 00:07:41.22\00:07:42.92 Although it can affect arteries in other places as well. 00:07:42.96\00:07:46.29 To particularly note, one of first things a doctor 00:07:46.76\00:07:49.66 that suspects Kawasaki is going to do, particularly 00:07:49.70\00:07:52.93 if he gets it early on, is you want to get 00:07:52.97\00:07:54.84 an echocardiogram of the heart. 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.34 In other words, we're going to take an ultrasound, 00:07:57.61\00:08:00.08 put it over the chest, and look very carefully 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.44 at all the parts of the heart, particularly at the arteries. 00:08:02.48\00:08:05.81 And they'll want to know their baseline because 00:08:06.48\00:08:09.45 as this Kawasaki progresses those arteries can dilate, 00:08:09.92\00:08:14.62 and in some places they can form aneurysms. 00:08:14.92\00:08:17.69 That means the artery just swells up and it's got this, 00:08:18.53\00:08:21.66 you know, very abnormal balloon-like that forms 00:08:21.70\00:08:25.03 there in the artery. 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.40 Those can clot off and cause a heart attack in the heart. 00:08:26.50\00:08:31.07 They can form, you can get the aneurysms in other 00:08:31.24\00:08:34.04 arteries as well, but the heart seems to be the big concern. 00:08:34.08\00:08:37.75 It's really affected there. 00:08:37.78\00:08:39.38 So we want to follow that very closely. 00:08:40.05\00:08:44.19 ~ Doctor, it sounds like, you said syndromes, 00:08:44.72\00:08:47.96 so you've got a constellation of things that you're dealing with. 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.96 It sounds like this is very painful. 00:08:51.39\00:08:53.03 Like the child is really suffering along with the 00:08:53.06\00:08:55.66 corona, the COVID. 00:08:55.86\00:08:57.20 This other thing on top of that makes for a lot of suffering 00:08:57.23\00:09:00.54 during the time that the child is sick. 00:09:00.57\00:09:02.10 ~ Well yes, I'm mean, they've got a fever, 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.47 they're miserable, and frequently diarrhea, 00:09:03.51\00:09:05.77 which is often very painful and miserable 00:09:05.81\00:09:07.78 in this particular case. 00:09:07.81\00:09:09.14 So yeah, the kid is sick. 00:09:09.18\00:09:10.51 It's not just running around, 00:09:10.55\00:09:12.61 "Oh, I didn't notice my face was red." 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.42 This is a kid that's sick, you know. 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.65 They've got fever, they've... 00:09:16.75\00:09:18.62 But this particular thing, the red face, the red hands 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.96 or feet, or the really red cracked lips, you know. 00:09:22.99\00:09:26.80 Those are kind of characteristic. 00:09:26.83\00:09:28.93 When you see them with this picture, it's like, 00:09:28.96\00:09:31.33 wait a minute. 00:09:31.37\00:09:32.70 This isn't just something ordinary. 00:09:32.73\00:09:34.84 This is the Kawasaki. 00:09:34.87\00:09:36.24 The child is so young, you're saying five or under, 00:09:36.27\00:09:38.97 he may not be able to articulate what he's going through, 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.91 so you've really got to be diligent to watch. 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.15 Because you've got to pick up and speak for the child 00:09:44.35\00:09:46.88 who may not be able to say, "I'm sick. 00:09:46.92\00:09:48.68 I've got a lot of things going on." 00:09:48.72\00:09:50.05 ~ But mom will notice. 00:09:50.09\00:09:51.45 Yes, I've often found... 00:09:53.22\00:09:55.29 You know, I've been doing emergency medicine 00:09:55.32\00:09:57.73 for the last 36 years. 00:09:57.76\00:09:59.59 If you talk to mom, she'll tell you what's wrong with her kid. 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.93 You know, moms know what's going on with their kids. 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.83 And they'll tell you, "No, look at this, this. 00:10:05.87\00:10:07.54 This isn't normal." 00:10:07.57\00:10:08.90 And that's very useful. 00:10:09.14\00:10:11.47 Just as a side, in other areas, one of the very difficult 00:10:11.94\00:10:15.74 things is a neurological exam in a small child. 00:10:15.78\00:10:18.98 But all you've got to do is ask mom, "Hey, is this normal 00:10:19.58\00:10:22.58 for him or is this not normal for him?" 00:10:22.62\00:10:24.72 She'll say, "Wait, wait, no this isn't him. 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.52 This is not usual, okay." 00:10:26.55\00:10:28.66 That trumps anything I say right there, you know, that I see. 00:10:28.99\00:10:32.96 Because, hey, mom knows that kid. 00:10:32.99\00:10:35.56 She knows his behavior, she knows the nuances of it, 00:10:35.60\00:10:38.83 and she says, "No, this isn't right." 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.67 So I place a lot of weight on what mom says about their kid. 00:10:41.54\00:10:49.54 Physicians that have been around for a while will. 00:10:49.98\00:10:52.25 They realize that mom knows what's going on; she'll tell ya. 00:10:52.28\00:10:56.02 Now she may not know what you know about medicine, 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.29 but she knows about her kid. 00:10:58.55\00:11:00.22 And she knows this isn't right, this is different than usual. 00:11:00.26\00:11:02.82 And so, you know, moms out there, you'll know 00:11:02.86\00:11:06.83 that this is common there. 00:11:06.86\00:11:08.20 But when you see these pieces that we're talking about, 00:11:08.23\00:11:10.57 that's when you want to get to the pediatrician right away. 00:11:11.00\00:11:13.67 You'll want to get in so you can get medical help right away. 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.17 Because there are some things they can do that can 00:11:16.20\00:11:18.44 reverse or significantly shorten or stop the progression 00:11:18.47\00:11:23.04 of this vasculitis that's affecting the arteries. 00:11:23.08\00:11:26.95 The big concern is vasculitis affecting the arteries. 00:11:26.98\00:11:30.05 And we can do that. 00:11:30.09\00:11:31.82 And the treatment; two things. 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.76 They will put the child on aspirin. 00:11:34.79\00:11:36.79 It's an anti-inflammatory and it helps cut that down. 00:11:38.06\00:11:41.83 They'll put them on a, you know, high dose, 00:11:41.86\00:11:43.67 anti-inflammatory dose initially, and then a more 00:11:43.70\00:11:46.60 maintenance dose will finish out the course of the illness. 00:11:46.63\00:11:49.50 And then the other thing is IV immunoglobulins. 00:11:50.07\00:11:55.14 This is a preparation that's actually made from 00:11:57.15\00:12:01.05 someone else's blood where they've drawn the blood, 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.69 separated out the plasma, and they've concentrated 00:12:03.72\00:12:06.29 the immunoglobulins, these antibodies 00:12:06.32\00:12:09.56 in other people's blood. 00:12:09.59\00:12:11.13 And they give those as a general set of antibodies, 00:12:11.46\00:12:16.06 and it seems to work quite well. 00:12:16.10\00:12:17.60 Often, a single large infusion significantly 00:12:18.30\00:12:21.30 reduces the symptoms. 00:12:21.34\00:12:22.87 If the fever still continues within a day, 00:12:22.90\00:12:25.07 they may give a second, or rarely even a third dose 00:12:25.11\00:12:27.68 of the immunoglobulins. 00:12:27.71\00:12:29.21 But it can really keep it from advancing in this dilation 00:12:29.44\00:12:35.02 and keep it from forming these aneurysms. 00:12:35.05\00:12:38.29 And it somehow blocks the immune system. 00:12:38.59\00:12:42.42 There's these various proteins in there, and they're 00:12:42.46\00:12:44.59 normalizing and blocking out this abnormal immune reaction 00:12:44.63\00:12:48.56 that's causing the vasculitis. 00:12:48.60\00:12:50.43 It's not necessarily an antibody that's killing 00:12:50.67\00:12:53.80 the virus, per se, as in the, you know, when we talked about 00:12:53.84\00:12:59.11 the plasma therapy for COVID-19. 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.78 This is a general immunoglobulin and somehow it tends to 00:13:02.58\00:13:06.48 help the body's immune system get back on the right keel 00:13:06.98\00:13:11.09 and stop destroying the arteries. 00:13:11.12\00:13:14.76 You know, I had heard of this new manifestation 00:13:16.06\00:13:21.06 of the coronavirus, but I didn't recognize the name, Kawasaki. 00:13:21.10\00:13:25.97 How prevalent is the problem? 00:13:26.40\00:13:29.50 I mean, I've heard that most of the cases have been in New York. 00:13:29.60\00:13:33.17 There might be one in Los Angeles and a few other places. 00:13:33.84\00:13:37.35 ~ That's correct. 00:13:37.38\00:13:38.71 So it's not real common at this point. 00:13:38.75\00:13:40.78 ~ There's been a lot in France recently. 00:13:40.82\00:13:42.72 In the last week or so they've had quite a few cases in France. 00:13:42.75\00:13:46.35 So they're just popping up at all the hospitals 00:13:46.69\00:13:49.22 there for some reason. 00:13:49.26\00:13:50.59 They're getting a lot of them there. 00:13:50.63\00:13:51.96 And I'm not sure exactly. 00:13:51.99\00:13:53.33 Of course, there's a lot of cases in France right now, 00:13:53.36\00:13:55.13 so it may just be a factor of the numbers. 00:13:55.16\00:13:58.17 Do they know why it afflicts one child versus another child? 00:13:58.20\00:14:02.37 No, they don't know that. 00:14:02.40\00:14:03.97 We don't have the answers to a lot of things 00:14:05.14\00:14:07.48 as we deal with this. 00:14:07.51\00:14:09.21 We do know that there is a racial difference. 00:14:10.11\00:14:16.42 You know, in the United States maybe one in ten thousand, 00:14:18.12\00:14:22.56 you know... 00:14:22.59\00:14:24.53 Or is it one in ten thousand, I think, in the UK; 00:14:26.76\00:14:29.26 one in five thousand in the United States. 00:14:29.30\00:14:31.77 Among Japanese it's down to one in one thousand. 00:14:32.73\00:14:36.77 They seem to have a much higher susceptibility. 00:14:36.94\00:14:40.94 Some genetic something makes them more susceptible to this. 00:14:40.98\00:14:45.11 So there's some racial differences in who is most 00:14:45.15\00:14:49.35 susceptible to that. 00:14:49.38\00:14:51.09 But as far as the exact mechanism by which it works 00:14:51.55\00:14:56.02 or why one person is more susceptible than another, 00:14:56.06\00:14:58.89 we don't know. 00:14:58.93\00:15:00.26 It's really a fairly uncommon and rare disease. 00:15:00.30\00:15:02.60 I mean, considering how widespread the coronavirus 00:15:02.90\00:15:07.87 is now, you know. 00:15:07.90\00:15:09.24 We started with things in New York, what was it? 00:15:09.27\00:15:11.47 Over 20% of the population has already been infected. 00:15:11.51\00:15:14.68 Generally, children have very mild or asymptomatic cases 00:15:15.64\00:15:20.12 of the coronavirus. 00:15:20.15\00:15:21.48 Why a few of them develop the Kawasaki is probably 00:15:22.28\00:15:25.49 the same with the others; adenovirus. 00:15:25.52\00:15:27.42 That's the common cold virus that comes around ever year 00:15:27.52\00:15:30.46 and everybody gets the adenovirus 00:15:30.49\00:15:32.19 and almost no one gets the Kawasaki. 00:15:32.46\00:15:35.66 But there are a few children that do. 00:15:35.70\00:15:38.13 And so we don't understand exactly all of these details, 00:15:38.87\00:15:43.64 but it is out there and it is serious enough 00:15:44.07\00:15:48.44 that it's considered the number one cause of 00:15:48.48\00:15:51.51 acquired heart disease in America. 00:15:51.55\00:15:55.85 In other words, some heart diseases you're born with, 00:15:56.22\00:16:00.89 and some you cause by what you eat. 00:16:00.92\00:16:02.52 But this is caused by this particular disease process. 00:16:02.56\00:16:07.93 Strep infections, rheumatic heart disease, 00:16:07.96\00:16:10.43 is another one that can affect the heart valves. 00:16:10.47\00:16:12.70 But this Kawasaki disease making these aneurysms 00:16:12.73\00:16:17.01 in the coronary arteries, you know, is a serious thing. 00:16:17.04\00:16:20.31 And you know, if a child starts to come down with this, 00:16:20.68\00:16:24.31 we certainly want to get them treated right away to 00:16:24.35\00:16:27.48 try to prevent it from forming these aneurysms in the heart, 00:16:27.52\00:16:31.05 and these dilated vessels and stuff. 00:16:31.09\00:16:33.86 Now in a lot of cases, even though the fact that they're 00:16:33.89\00:16:36.09 starting to get the dilated vessels or maybe even starting 00:16:36.12\00:16:38.89 to get an aneurysm, in a lot of cases 00:16:38.93\00:16:41.23 those will go ahead and resolve. 00:16:41.70\00:16:43.30 They get the aspirin and the immunoglobulins, 00:16:43.33\00:16:45.90 and over the next, you know, a couple or few weeks 00:16:46.00\00:16:48.34 as they resolve, those will come back to normal 00:16:48.37\00:16:52.17 and they'll have no further problems. 00:16:52.21\00:16:54.04 But in some cases if they've gone far enough, 00:16:54.08\00:16:56.44 they don't, and it becomes a permanent 00:16:56.88\00:16:58.81 problem there in the heart. 00:16:59.35\00:17:00.68 ~ So the question is, there are a few children that have 00:17:00.72\00:17:05.15 passed away as a result of the... 00:17:05.19\00:17:08.42 Is it a combination of the Kawasaki and the coronavirus 00:17:08.46\00:17:12.59 or have they died because of the coronavirus? 00:17:12.93\00:17:15.33 Is it a compound issue? 00:17:15.36\00:17:16.77 ~ Yeah, it's all of that together. 00:17:16.80\00:17:19.13 I mean, one of the things, when we have this vasculitis 00:17:19.17\00:17:21.94 going on and everything is dilated, it sort of makes, 00:17:21.97\00:17:25.94 you'll often hear them refer to the disease 00:17:25.97\00:17:29.48 toxic shock syndrome. 00:17:29.51\00:17:31.41 It's sort of like septic shock 00:17:31.88\00:17:33.72 where certain infections make toxins and the blood vessels 00:17:34.48\00:17:38.69 dilate, and the blood pressure drops, and they're in shock. 00:17:38.72\00:17:42.82 And we're trying to put in IV fluids or even, you know, 00:17:42.86\00:17:46.73 IV pressure agents and stuff to keep the blood pressure up 00:17:46.76\00:17:49.53 to keep them alive. 00:17:49.56\00:17:50.90 And these children can go into that with that. 00:17:51.10\00:17:54.20 And it seems to be related, again, 00:17:54.47\00:17:56.87 to the vasculitis affecting that. 00:17:56.91\00:17:58.91 It's like a toxic shock syndrome. 00:17:58.94\00:18:01.08 They can go into this hemodynamic thing 00:18:01.11\00:18:04.41 where they go into this toxic shock syndrome. 00:18:04.45\00:18:06.61 And you know, it's very life threatening at that point. 00:18:07.25\00:18:09.92 And as I mentioned, in some cases these aneurysms 00:18:10.35\00:18:13.12 can clot and stuff and we can have heart attacks. 00:18:13.15\00:18:15.86 You don't think of a five year old as having a heart attack, 00:18:16.76\00:18:19.06 but yeah, if you block off an artery, 00:18:19.09\00:18:20.80 we've got a problem there. 00:18:21.93\00:18:23.57 Early recognition and treatment with aspirin and immunoglobulins 00:18:25.20\00:18:29.30 is our best course on those few children that get that. 00:18:29.34\00:18:32.04 But again, it is rare. It's a few. 00:18:32.07\00:18:33.84 Most people will have nothing. 00:18:34.24\00:18:35.94 And even of those that get it, you know, when it's recognized 00:18:35.98\00:18:39.71 and treated, they can do okay. 00:18:39.75\00:18:42.78 ~ That's the good news, that it is imminently 00:18:42.82\00:18:44.75 treatable when caught. 00:18:44.79\00:18:46.12 - Yeah. - Yeah, praise the Lord. 00:18:46.15\00:18:48.09 Well, I'm trying to think about how we're going to 00:18:48.82\00:18:55.63 frame the rest of our discussion today. 00:18:55.66\00:18:58.30 We've been wanting to talk about lifestyle issues. 00:18:58.33\00:19:01.87 And that's been for the last three or four programs. 00:19:02.40\00:19:05.07 We've never gotten to that particular issue. 00:19:05.84\00:19:08.14 But let's frame it this way. 00:19:08.61\00:19:10.45 There's a lot of talk in the media today 00:19:11.15\00:19:14.32 and among political parties about healthcare being 00:19:14.98\00:19:19.52 a human right. 00:19:19.55\00:19:20.89 On the other hand, you don't hear anything 00:19:22.16\00:19:24.96 about a person's health being a personal responsibility. 00:19:25.73\00:19:31.63 And so, you know, there's this discussion of people 00:19:32.87\00:19:37.67 who smoke, they drink, they eat lard, and they eat bacon, 00:19:38.04\00:19:45.51 and all these things that cause artery disease. 00:19:45.75\00:19:49.12 And the people who are very healthy, of course, 00:19:49.62\00:19:52.82 they have to pay for the healthcare of those people. 00:19:53.02\00:19:55.49 So shouldn't we be focusing more on prevention 00:19:56.12\00:20:01.60 and, you know, taking care of our bodies rather than cures? 00:20:02.26\00:20:08.44 You know, we always bear a responsibility. 00:20:10.11\00:20:12.44 It's interesting, though, in the legal area in the 00:20:12.47\00:20:15.98 political arena right now, not right now, but recently 00:20:16.01\00:20:20.62 in the past, we do recognize that in some cases. 00:20:20.65\00:20:24.39 Why do we have motorcycle helmet laws and bicycle helmet laws 00:20:24.72\00:20:28.99 now where you have to wear a helmet when you're out riding? 00:20:29.02\00:20:31.69 Because everybody else shouldn't have to pay for your 00:20:32.33\00:20:34.93 quadriplegia for the rest of your life 00:20:34.96\00:20:37.10 if you weren't wearing a helmet and you could have. 00:20:37.13\00:20:39.47 And so, we pass laws to protect you. 00:20:39.73\00:20:43.81 But we only go so far in certain areas, you know. 00:20:44.54\00:20:47.54 We don't arrest people for smoking 00:20:48.81\00:20:50.95 or for eating hamburgers yet. 00:20:50.98\00:20:53.01 And I don't know that we should. 00:20:54.58\00:20:56.72 I'm not talking about arresting. 00:20:56.75\00:20:59.02 You know, I'm talking about the issue of 00:20:59.25\00:21:01.89 paying for their healthcare. 00:21:01.92\00:21:03.39 Because this has to do more with long-term. 00:21:04.36\00:21:08.10 It's not like having an accident and you don't have a helmet, 00:21:08.13\00:21:11.37 and therefore for the rest of your life you're a quadriplegic. 00:21:11.40\00:21:14.37 Yeah, and when it comes down to it, 00:21:14.40\00:21:18.51 in a wealthy nation with not too much disease, 00:21:19.57\00:21:24.25 we can afford to pay for everybody's healthcare. 00:21:24.31\00:21:27.45 But as healthcare gets more expensive, 00:21:27.82\00:21:30.02 and disease gets more extensive, those soon run out of 00:21:30.42\00:21:36.83 the ability of possibilities and you start limiting healthcare. 00:21:36.86\00:21:43.90 And that's when the personal responsibility 00:21:44.87\00:21:48.60 really falls, not on everybody else, but back on you. 00:21:48.97\00:21:52.44 Because sooner or later there won't be enough CT scanners, 00:21:53.04\00:21:57.55 MRI's, and you know, all of the special imaging things. 00:21:57.58\00:22:02.68 There won't be enough lab tests for everybody, 00:22:02.72\00:22:04.95 there won't be enough, you know, drugs, 00:22:04.99\00:22:09.22 particularly some of these really expensive ones 00:22:09.26\00:22:11.63 for everybody. 00:22:11.66\00:22:12.99 And then, if your healthcare resources get overwhelmed 00:22:13.03\00:22:17.10 in a pandemic like we have seen in New York and, you know, 00:22:17.13\00:22:22.87 other places, suddenly all of the resources are used up 00:22:22.90\00:22:26.74 taking care of the immediate emergency. 00:22:26.78\00:22:29.38 And everybody else that has another medical problem 00:22:29.74\00:22:32.38 is pushed on the back burner. 00:22:32.85\00:22:34.28 They start canceling all of those things. 00:22:34.32\00:22:36.92 But you know, insurance companies start denying 00:22:38.59\00:22:42.52 certain things, and, "Well, this is no longer essential," 00:22:42.56\00:22:45.99 or, "This isn't a covered benefit anymore." 00:22:46.03\00:22:48.23 Or trying to just deal with the reality of there's not enough 00:22:48.26\00:22:53.00 money in America to pay to do everything for everybody 00:22:53.03\00:22:56.20 when everybody is sick. 00:22:56.24\00:22:57.64 And so, your health really comes back 00:22:58.47\00:23:01.38 to your own responsibility to preserve your health. 00:23:02.34\00:23:05.65 You know, God gave health to you as a right. 00:23:06.58\00:23:10.22 You have the right to good health. 00:23:10.25\00:23:11.82 God has promised it to you. 00:23:11.85\00:23:13.62 And He's promised to maintain it for you. 00:23:14.12\00:23:16.96 Not only has He given us wise advice on, you know, 00:23:17.63\00:23:21.86 you might say a prescription from the doctor for sunshine, 00:23:21.90\00:23:26.80 fresh air, drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit. 00:23:26.84\00:23:31.07 You know, He starts giving us those prescriptions; 00:23:31.17\00:23:33.54 now we can follow them or not follow them. 00:23:33.58\00:23:35.48 But you know, health comes from following them. 00:23:35.51\00:23:39.35 And even beyond the prescriptions of healthcare, 00:23:39.71\00:23:44.65 He's told us that, you know, "I am the Lord, your Healer." 00:23:45.32\00:23:49.92 That's His title. He's our Healer. 00:23:49.96\00:23:51.86 Salvation and physical healing are so intertwined 00:23:52.83\00:23:59.43 when we talk about Christ's work to redeem and undo 00:23:59.47\00:24:03.71 all the evil that Satan has done in this world. 00:24:03.81\00:24:06.84 And when He came here 2000 years ago, 00:24:06.88\00:24:09.48 He spent as much time going around miraculously 00:24:09.58\00:24:13.52 healing people because that was His mission. 00:24:13.55\00:24:17.25 Not just to get people interested 00:24:18.25\00:24:20.19 so they would listen to Him. 00:24:20.22\00:24:21.69 It really was His mission to restore health. 00:24:21.72\00:24:25.59 ~ Physical, mental, and spiritual. 00:24:26.09\00:24:28.30 Yeah, that was really definitely part of His mission. 00:24:28.33\00:24:32.70 I understand that the New Testament uses the same word 00:24:34.40\00:24:39.24 for, "salvation," and, "healing". 00:24:39.27\00:24:41.14 And while I'm not proficient in those languages, 00:24:41.78\00:24:44.68 I have been told that item. 00:24:44.71\00:24:46.88 And I think there is a lot of insight to be gained 00:24:46.92\00:24:50.69 in understanding the closeness of those two. 00:24:50.72\00:24:53.52 How closely healing, physical healing, is connected 00:24:53.56\00:24:58.49 with spiritual healing. 00:24:58.53\00:24:59.86 Those two go together in so many ways, you know. 00:24:59.89\00:25:02.70 We can talk for weeks about the connection between those. 00:25:02.73\00:25:06.53 You know, but we understand the health principles. 00:25:07.00\00:25:10.84 They form a huge big part of our part in cooperating with God. 00:25:10.87\00:25:15.84 Much in the same way that He gave His Ten Commandments. 00:25:15.88\00:25:18.95 And as we cooperate with those, it's how we cooperate 00:25:19.15\00:25:23.52 in our spiritual healing. 00:25:23.55\00:25:25.29 You know, the Spirit comes to do both of these in us. 00:25:25.65\00:25:29.99 The Spirit heals our body and the Spirit heals our soul, 00:25:30.03\00:25:35.26 but He does it through our cooperation, 00:25:35.63\00:25:38.83 our submission, our surrender, our absolutely giving into 00:25:39.03\00:25:43.94 God's way, recognizing Him as the Ruler in our lives. 00:25:44.51\00:25:48.64 And as we do that, we place Him in a position 00:25:49.21\00:25:52.78 where He's free to go ahead and do miracles that go even beyond 00:25:52.81\00:25:57.82 fruits and vegetables. 00:25:57.99\00:25:59.52 You know, I like the story of Naaman. 00:26:01.62\00:26:06.16 You know, the Syrian captain that came down 00:26:06.36\00:26:09.00 to Elisha with this incurable disease. 00:26:09.43\00:26:15.10 There was no physician at the time that had anything 00:26:15.14\00:26:17.87 to offer, any hope to offer him. 00:26:17.91\00:26:20.34 And we have diseases today in which there are physicians 00:26:20.81\00:26:24.15 that have no hope to offer us. 00:26:24.18\00:26:25.68 But he came with this, and he went to him 00:26:25.71\00:26:30.02 and had heard that he could do miraculous healings, 00:26:30.05\00:26:33.05 because of the witness of this little girl. 00:26:33.09\00:26:34.89 And when he got there, Elisha didn't even 00:26:35.52\00:26:39.83 come down and talk to him. 00:26:39.86\00:26:41.23 He basically sent his servant down. 00:26:42.23\00:26:48.30 Just his messenger. 00:26:48.84\00:26:50.44 ~ Didn't make Naaman too happy, did it? 00:26:50.47\00:26:52.34 No. And he said, "Just go wash in the Jordan river 00:26:52.44\00:26:56.95 seven times and you'll be healed." 00:26:56.98\00:26:58.65 You know, and then he was really mad, you know. 00:26:59.38\00:27:01.32 He said, "I got really taken on this one. 00:27:01.42\00:27:03.85 The guy wouldn't even come talk to me." 00:27:05.09\00:27:07.19 Oh, and he was mad. 00:27:07.22\00:27:08.62 - And I remember that, you know, compared to the rivers 00:27:09.39\00:27:12.16 he had at home which he said were much cleaner, 00:27:12.19\00:27:15.16 he said, "Yeah, he sends me to this mud hole." 00:27:15.56\00:27:17.37 But finally his friends say, "Well, just try it." 00:27:17.63\00:27:20.17 So he went out to the river, he dipped seven times, 00:27:20.20\00:27:22.97 and on the seventh time he was miraculously healed. 00:27:23.00\00:27:27.08 Now was it the water in the Jordan river that healed him? 00:27:27.54\00:27:31.25 No, of course not. You know. 00:27:32.51\00:27:34.65 It was God's miraculous healing power. 00:27:35.12\00:27:39.22 But if he hadn't gone and dipped in the river seven times, 00:27:39.42\00:27:42.86 would God have been free to heal him? 00:27:43.09\00:27:44.83 No, if he had gone back and said, "I'm going to 00:27:45.49\00:27:46.86 dip in this other river," no. 00:27:46.90\00:27:49.03 No, God, He comes to all of us with that option. 00:27:49.06\00:27:54.34 Well, time is up. 00:27:54.44\00:27:55.84 Dip in the river. 00:27:58.54\00:27:59.87 We'll see you again next time on Coronavirus Report. 00:28:01.11\00:28:04.31 Stay healthy, stay well. 00:28:04.35\00:28:05.95
