Let's bow our heads. 00:00:34.66\00:00:36.00 Father in heaven, what a joy it is to be in Your house. 00:00:37.13\00:00:40.00 How wonderful it is to be alive today. 00:00:41.20\00:00:43.97 How wonderful it is to have the Sabbath. 00:00:44.94\00:00:47.61 A day when we can just step back, unwind, and focus 00:00:48.24\00:00:53.58 only on You and Your kingdom. 00:00:53.62\00:00:56.05 We ask, Father, as we open Your holy Word, that Your Spirit 00:00:56.82\00:01:00.06 will be manifested in this place. 00:01:00.76\00:01:03.09 Give us clarity of thought and give us tender hearts 00:01:03.66\00:01:07.30 to receive the seed of truth. 00:01:07.33\00:01:09.96 And we thank You, Father, for hearing and for 00:01:10.63\00:01:12.47 answering our prayer. 00:01:12.50\00:01:13.84 For we ask it in the precious name 00:01:14.14\00:01:16.00 of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. 00:01:16.04\00:01:18.97 Amen. 00:01:19.37\00:01:20.71 Our study today will be number two in the series, 00:01:23.28\00:01:26.75 Catching Up To Jesus. 00:01:27.05\00:01:30.35 Now several weeks ago I spoke about the experience 00:01:31.35\00:01:35.62 of John the Baptist when Jesus presented Himself 00:01:35.66\00:01:40.00 as the perfect Lamb without blemish and defect. 00:01:40.03\00:01:45.13 And you remember that there were several common denominators 00:01:45.60\00:01:49.10 in that study that we had, number one in this series 00:01:49.14\00:01:52.94 called, Catching Up to Jesus. 00:01:52.97\00:01:55.44 We noticed first of all that there were prophecies 00:01:55.81\00:01:58.01 which pointed forward to Jesus as the perfect Lamb of God. 00:01:58.05\00:02:02.52 Secondly, we noticed that when these prophecies 00:02:02.95\00:02:06.39 were about to be fulfilled God raised up a prophet, 00:02:06.42\00:02:10.96 John the Baptist, to give great publicity to the fact that 00:02:10.99\00:02:14.56 Jesus was going to present Himself as the perfect Lamb. 00:02:14.60\00:02:19.10 We noticed, however, that John the Baptist 00:02:19.83\00:02:21.87 went through a misunderstanding of what prophecy was actually 00:02:21.90\00:02:25.71 trying to teach. 00:02:25.74\00:02:27.28 And because of his misunderstanding 00:02:27.51\00:02:29.91 of these prophecies, he went through a deep disappointment. 00:02:29.94\00:02:35.48 We noticed, however, that when he was disappointed in prison, 00:02:35.95\00:02:39.92 an angel drew near to him and opened up the passages 00:02:40.26\00:02:44.53 from the prophecies which he had not understood 00:02:44.56\00:02:47.56 or which he had misunderstood. 00:02:47.60\00:02:49.33 And as a result, John the Baptist died there in peace. 00:02:49.36\00:02:56.71 We also noticed in our study that God chose an instrument 00:02:56.81\00:03:01.04 who was not educated. 00:03:01.08\00:03:02.54 In other words, he was not educated in the 00:03:03.08\00:03:05.11 schools of the rabbis. 00:03:05.15\00:03:06.48 He was not one of the prominent religious leaders 00:03:06.51\00:03:09.38 of the day and age. 00:03:09.42\00:03:11.09 So this is the process which was followed in the first study 00:03:11.29\00:03:15.92 in this series. 00:03:15.96\00:03:17.29 A prophecy or a series of prophecies, 00:03:17.53\00:03:20.16 great publicity when the prophecies were about 00:03:20.53\00:03:23.03 to be fulfilled, a misunderstanding 00:03:23.06\00:03:25.67 of those prophecies, as a result of the misunderstanding, 00:03:25.70\00:03:29.60 a great disappointment. 00:03:29.64\00:03:31.31 We noticed also that after the disappointment 00:03:31.81\00:03:34.64 comes the clarification. 00:03:34.68\00:03:36.34 And God chose a very humble instrument through which 00:03:37.08\00:03:41.55 to proclaim the message. 00:03:41.58\00:03:42.92 And by the way, the religious church of the day, 00:03:42.95\00:03:46.12 the establishment of the day, rejected the message 00:03:46.15\00:03:50.46 that was presented by John the Baptist. 00:03:50.69\00:03:54.10 Now in our study today we're going to go to step number two. 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.63 We're going to study a second great disappointment. 00:03:59.27\00:04:02.57 And we're going to notice that this process 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.34 follows the same order as the experience of John the Baptist. 00:04:06.37\00:04:11.31 We're going to find that there were specific prophecies 00:04:11.75\00:04:15.38 now about Jesus going to the cross and dying 00:04:15.42\00:04:19.92 for the sins of the world. 00:04:19.95\00:04:21.62 You see, with John the Baptist, Jesus presented Himself 00:04:21.82\00:04:24.73 at the entrance to the court and He was examined 00:04:25.03\00:04:28.46 to make sure that He was the perfect Lamb. 00:04:28.50\00:04:31.57 In other words, that He had lived a sinless life. 00:04:31.60\00:04:35.44 Then He goes one step further and He comes 00:04:35.87\00:04:38.17 to the altar of sacrifice. 00:04:38.21\00:04:40.41 That's where the perfect Lamb is going to be offered 00:04:40.44\00:04:43.88 as a sacrifice for the sins of the world. 00:04:43.91\00:04:46.82 Now there were many prophecies which pointed to Jesus 00:04:47.32\00:04:50.65 as the sacrifice for sin. 00:04:50.69\00:04:53.52 As we begin, I would like to examine several of those 00:04:53.99\00:04:58.06 prophecies which pointed to the work that Jesus 00:04:58.09\00:05:01.20 was going to perform after presenting Himself 00:05:01.23\00:05:04.53 as a perfect Lamb. 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.17 We all know, for example, Genesis chapter 22, 00:05:06.90\00:05:10.24 and I'm only going to read two verses; verse 8 and verse 13. 00:05:10.54\00:05:16.51 This is the experience of Abraham when he took Isaac 00:05:17.05\00:05:20.42 to Mount Moriah to sacrifice him. 00:05:20.45\00:05:22.88 And it says there in verse 8... 00:05:23.55\00:05:26.52 In other words, God was going to provide 00:05:35.96\00:05:38.10 the lamb for the offering. 00:05:38.13\00:05:40.14 And now we jump down to verse 13. 00:05:43.44\00:05:45.71 In other words, there was a substitute offered in place 00:06:03.99\00:06:07.83 of the death of Isaac. 00:06:07.86\00:06:09.66 Very clearly, this passage in Genesis 22 00:06:09.86\00:06:13.34 is teaching us that there would be one who would die 00:06:13.44\00:06:16.94 as a substitute for the sins of humanity. 00:06:16.97\00:06:21.28 And then of course we have the story of the Passover. 00:06:21.88\00:06:25.51 It's found in Exodus chapter 12, 00:06:25.91\00:06:28.18 and I'm only going to read verses 5-7. 00:06:28.22\00:06:31.09 By the way, the Passover provided the specific day 00:06:31.39\00:06:36.62 and month in which the Messiah would die. 00:06:36.66\00:06:40.83 The month was Nissan, and the day was the 14th day of Nissan. 00:06:41.36\00:06:48.30 Notice Exodus 12:5. 00:06:48.67\00:06:52.34 There you have the first step that Jesus takes 00:06:55.88\00:06:58.75 through the Sanctuary. 00:06:58.78\00:07:00.15 That's Nissan. 00:07:12.59\00:07:14.00 Better translation would be, "at evening." 00:07:20.87\00:07:24.44 So the Passover provided the idea of the day and the month 00:07:34.68\00:07:40.72 in which the Messiah would die a sacrifice for sin. 00:07:40.76\00:07:45.76 The fact is that Genesis 22 pointed to the idea 00:07:46.29\00:07:49.83 that there would be a substitute offered in place of man. 00:07:49.93\00:07:54.74 But there were other prophecies in the Old Testament. 00:07:55.10\00:07:57.61 For example, Exodus 29:38-39. 00:07:57.64\00:08:02.48 Here it speaks about the morning and the evening sacrifice. 00:08:02.88\00:08:08.12 It says there in Exodus 29:38-39... 00:08:08.48\00:08:12.75 Or in the evening. 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.01 Once again, the idea that lambs needed to be sacrificed for sin. 00:08:33.44\00:08:40.58 And then of course, who could forget 00:08:41.02\00:08:42.55 the prophecy of Isaiah 53:7 where it speaks about 00:08:42.58\00:08:47.39 the suffering servant. 00:08:47.42\00:08:49.26 Let's read there, Isaiah 53:7, speaking about what the Messiah 00:08:49.29\00:08:54.80 would accomplish at the altar of sacrifice. 00:08:54.83\00:08:57.83 And of course, in the same prophecy we find 00:09:16.12\00:09:18.52 that He was wounded for our transgressions. 00:09:18.85\00:09:22.79 In other words, He took our place, 00:09:23.06\00:09:25.43 according to Isaiah 53:3-7. 00:09:25.46\00:09:30.07 So there were clear prophecies that meant the Messiah 00:09:30.10\00:09:32.63 was going to come, He was going to take sin upon Himself, 00:09:32.67\00:09:36.64 and He was going to be sacrificed for sin. 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.71 Now another remarkable prophecy that we find in Scripture 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.48 in the Old Testament gives the specific year 00:09:43.51\00:09:47.55 in which the Messiah would be cut off, 00:09:47.58\00:09:50.19 or the Messiah would die. 00:09:50.22\00:09:51.75 Interestingly enough, the Passover gave the day 00:09:51.95\00:09:56.02 and the month. 00:09:56.06\00:09:57.39 But there's also a prophecy which gave the year 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.33 for the death of the Messiah. 00:10:00.36\00:10:01.90 Notice Daniel 9:26. 00:10:02.00\00:10:05.33 This is the famous prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:10:05.37\00:10:08.60 And this is speaking about the final week of the 70 weeks. 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.87 Which I'll just review. 00:10:12.01\00:10:13.68 They begin in the year 457. 00:10:13.71\00:10:15.98 Jesus is baptized in the year 27. 00:10:16.28\00:10:19.91 And then He's crucified in the year 31 00:10:20.12\00:10:23.65 on the 14th day of Nissan. 00:10:23.85\00:10:26.72 Notice Daniel 9:26. 00:10:27.02\00:10:31.29 This prophecy pointed to the fact that in the middle 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.35 of that last week of years, the Messiah would be cut off. 00:10:53.38\00:10:57.32 And Exodus 12 emphasizes that it would be on the precise day 00:10:57.62\00:11:02.36 and month on which the Passover was offered. 00:11:02.39\00:11:05.93 So the Old Testament had an abundance of prophecies 00:11:06.29\00:11:09.80 which pointed to the fact that when Messiah would come, 00:11:09.83\00:11:12.80 He would take upon Himself the sins of the world 00:11:12.83\00:11:16.71 and He would offer His life in place of our life, 00:11:16.74\00:11:20.98 and He would offer it for sin. 00:11:21.01\00:11:23.24 Now the New Testament makes it very clear that 00:11:23.95\00:11:26.15 Jesus fulfilled these prophecies. 00:11:26.18\00:11:29.18 In fact, the New Testament emphasizes that Jesus 00:11:29.22\00:11:32.42 officiated His own sacrifice. 00:11:32.65\00:11:35.32 You know, in the Old Testament you had to have a priest 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.09 and a sacrifice. 00:11:38.13\00:11:39.46 But in the New Testament we find that Jesus 00:11:39.89\00:11:43.53 is the priest and the sacrifice. 00:11:43.57\00:11:46.10 So Jesus is the Priest who offers His own life? 00:11:46.13\00:11:50.74 Notice 1 Corinthians 5:7. 00:11:51.01\00:11:54.28 Here it's speaking about the Passover. 00:11:54.51\00:11:56.68 I want you to notice who fulfills the Passover. 00:11:56.71\00:11:59.21 1 Corinthians 5:7 00:11:59.25\00:12:02.05 The apostle Paul says... 00:12:02.55\00:12:03.99 Now comes the key portion of the verse. 00:12:15.26\00:12:17.47 Notice that Jesus fulfills the Passover. 00:12:25.74\00:12:29.44 By the way, He died on the 14th day of Nissan 00:12:29.71\00:12:34.38 as a Passover lamb in the middle of that last week. 00:12:34.42\00:12:39.49 Notice also Hebrews 7:27, the fulfillment of these 00:12:39.95\00:12:44.69 Old Testament prophecies. 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.49 Hebrews 7:27, it's speaking about the Sanctuary. 00:12:46.80\00:12:50.63 This is speaking about Jesus as the Lamb. 00:12:59.97\00:13:02.24 The first step that we talked about in our 00:13:02.28\00:13:04.81 first study together. 00:13:04.85\00:13:06.18 That is, in the Old Testament. 00:13:12.82\00:13:14.49 Notice, He offered up Himself. 00:13:26.13\00:13:29.04 He was the priest and He was also the victim. 00:13:29.07\00:13:32.67 Notice Ephesians 5:2. 00:13:33.51\00:13:36.28 Another text that speaks about Jesus fulfilling 00:13:36.31\00:13:39.51 these ceremonies of sacrifices of animals, 00:13:39.55\00:13:42.78 and specifically lambs, in the Old Testament. 00:13:42.82\00:13:45.59 Ephesians 5:2 00:13:45.62\00:13:48.46 It says there, the apostle Paul is counseling the church... 00:13:48.96\00:13:51.99 Notice once again the idea that Jesus gives His life, 00:14:10.98\00:14:14.58 Jesus actually offers Himself for the sins of the world. 00:14:15.62\00:14:20.52 It's so clear in Scripture that when Messiah would come, 00:14:20.99\00:14:24.43 He would actually come to bear the sins of the world 00:14:24.53\00:14:27.96 and to be sacrificed for those sins as a sweet aroma 00:14:28.00\00:14:32.30 before God so that God's people could be accepted in Him. 00:14:32.33\00:14:36.87 Notice Galatians 3:13. 00:14:37.61\00:14:40.28 Another text that speaks about Jesus 00:14:40.31\00:14:42.44 fulfilling these prophecies. 00:14:42.54\00:14:44.28 Galatians 3:13 00:14:44.31\00:14:47.38 It says there... 00:14:47.95\00:14:49.28 How did He do it? 00:14:54.62\00:14:56.06 So the curse that I deserve, Jesus took upon Himself 00:15:06.27\00:15:09.87 by hanging on the tree. 00:15:09.90\00:15:11.54 That is, by dying. 00:15:11.57\00:15:13.44 Notice 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:15:14.18\00:15:16.91 We'll only read two more. 00:15:16.95\00:15:18.31 The New Testament is saturated with these text. 00:15:18.35\00:15:21.25 2 Corinthians 5:21 00:15:21.28\00:15:24.62 This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. 00:15:24.82\00:15:27.16 It says, "For He," that is God the Father, "made Him," Jesus, 00:15:27.89\00:15:32.33 "who knew no sin," there you have the perfect Lamb, 00:15:32.36\00:15:35.53 "to be sin for us," see, He bore our sins... 00:15:35.86\00:15:39.93 "He knew no sin..." That's the unblemished lamb. 00:15:43.94\00:15:46.74 But He took sin upon Himself and He was sacrificed 00:15:46.78\00:15:50.08 in my place and in your place. 00:15:50.11\00:15:52.58 One final text, Hebrews 2:9. 00:15:52.61\00:15:56.82 Hebrews 2:9 00:15:56.92\00:15:59.85 Here the apostle Paul describes the work that Jesus 00:16:00.62\00:16:03.86 performed for us when He came to this earth 00:16:04.06\00:16:07.40 and He died on the cross. 00:16:07.43\00:16:09.20 It says there... 00:16:09.40\00:16:10.73 So let me ask you the question, were there many prophecies 00:16:28.28\00:16:31.85 in the Old Testament about what the Messiah would do 00:16:31.89\00:16:34.76 when He would come the first time? 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.66 An abundance of them. 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.09 Did these prophecies clearly point to the idea 00:16:38.29\00:16:41.56 that the Messiah was going to bear sin and He was going to be 00:16:41.60\00:16:45.20 sacrificed for sin? 00:16:45.23\00:16:47.14 Abundantly. 00:16:47.17\00:16:48.50 The Passover, being cut off in the middle of the week, 00:16:48.64\00:16:52.04 the story of Isaac, the morning and evening sacrifice. 00:16:52.34\00:16:55.61 An abundance of prophecies in the Old Testament 00:16:56.01\00:16:59.28 pointing to the work that the Messiah was going to perform. 00:16:59.31\00:17:03.12 And the New Testament corroborates that Jesus 00:17:03.15\00:17:05.82 fulfilled those prophecies. 00:17:05.85\00:17:08.36 Now do you think that it was important for there to be 00:17:09.06\00:17:12.06 great publicity when Jesus was about to fulfill 00:17:12.09\00:17:16.03 all of these prophecies? 00:17:16.06\00:17:17.57 Of course. 00:17:17.77\00:17:19.10 What good would it do for Jesus to fulfill all of these 00:17:19.13\00:17:21.74 prophecies and nobody to know about it? 00:17:21.77\00:17:24.77 Now, was there great publicity when Jesus was about 00:17:25.37\00:17:28.74 to go to the cross? 00:17:28.78\00:17:30.51 Absolutely. 00:17:30.85\00:17:32.18 It's known as the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. 00:17:32.28\00:17:37.65 You see, it was important that every eye be riveted on Jesus, 00:17:37.82\00:17:41.36 what Jesus was going to do there in Jerusalem. 00:17:41.39\00:17:44.76 He was going to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament. 00:17:44.79\00:17:48.43 And by the way, if anyone was to blame for the disappointment 00:17:48.46\00:17:52.20 that followed, we would probably have to blame Jesus. 00:17:52.23\00:17:55.17 Because Jesus staged this whole event. 00:17:55.20\00:17:59.64 It was Jesus who told the disciples that they were 00:18:00.01\00:18:02.78 suppose to go get the animal upon which He rode. 00:18:02.81\00:18:06.92 And He was the one who allowed Himself to be proclaimed King, 00:18:07.02\00:18:10.65 as we'll notice. 00:18:10.69\00:18:12.02 All of Jerusalem proclaimed Him King. 00:18:12.05\00:18:14.19 And Jesus knew very well, we're going to notice, 00:18:14.22\00:18:16.99 that this was going to lead to a great disappointment. 00:18:17.03\00:18:20.30 By the way, did Jesus during His ministry 00:18:20.40\00:18:23.37 warn the disciples about what He was going to do 00:18:23.40\00:18:26.47 when He was going to go to Jerusalem? 00:18:26.50\00:18:28.20 Did He teach them how He was going to fulfill Bible prophecy? 00:18:28.30\00:18:32.34 He most certainly did. 00:18:32.37\00:18:33.71 Notice Matthew 16:21-22. 00:18:33.74\00:18:38.11 Matthew 16:21-22 00:18:38.31\00:18:42.42 This is immediately after Peter confesses that Jesus 00:18:42.65\00:18:45.65 is the Christ. 00:18:45.69\00:18:47.02 "From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples 00:18:47.59\00:18:52.36 that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things 00:18:52.39\00:18:57.53 from the elders and chief priests and scribes, 00:18:57.57\00:19:00.67 and be killed, and be raised the third day." 00:19:00.70\00:19:04.61 Had Jesus, during His ministry, warned them that He was 00:19:05.11\00:19:07.61 going to Jerusalem to die? 00:19:07.64\00:19:09.48 Of course He had. 00:19:09.51\00:19:10.95 And yet He knew that they were going to misunderstand 00:19:11.28\00:19:14.32 what He was going to do. 00:19:14.38\00:19:16.05 And so Jesus stages this great publicity event, 00:19:16.45\00:19:21.29 the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, 00:19:21.32\00:19:23.79 so that everybody could have their eyes focused on Him 00:19:23.83\00:19:26.83 even though He knows that this is going to lead 00:19:26.86\00:19:29.73 to a bitter disappointment. 00:19:29.76\00:19:31.70 In fact, let's read from Matthew chapter 21 00:19:31.73\00:19:36.00 about the triumphal entry, and we'll begin at verse 1. 00:19:36.37\00:19:39.94 Matthew 21:1 00:19:39.97\00:19:43.18 And I want you to notice that Jesus is staging this event. 00:19:43.21\00:19:46.45 Jesus plans it, Jesus implements it, 00:19:46.48\00:19:49.65 knowing full well that people are misunderstanding 00:19:49.68\00:19:52.95 the type of King that He is going to be. 00:19:53.36\00:19:55.66 It says there... 00:19:56.29\00:19:57.63 Who staged this event? 00:20:55.38\00:20:56.89 Was this an idea that the disciples came up with? 00:20:57.32\00:20:59.89 No, it was Jesus. 00:20:59.92\00:21:01.89 It says here that Jesus said to the disciples, 00:21:01.92\00:21:04.66 "Go, loose them, bring them." 00:21:04.69\00:21:08.03 He told them what to say in case of objection. 00:21:08.06\00:21:10.77 And it says that they did as Jesus commanded them. 00:21:10.97\00:21:14.77 Let me ask you, was there great fanfare and publicity 00:21:15.70\00:21:19.51 on what we have come to know as Palm Sunday? 00:21:19.54\00:21:22.78 Was every eye in Jerusalem riveted upon Jesus? 00:21:22.81\00:21:26.82 Absolutely. 00:21:26.85\00:21:28.18 He was going to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament 00:21:28.22\00:21:31.52 about being the sacrifice, being the Lamb of God 00:21:31.55\00:21:34.42 who takes away the sin of the world. 00:21:34.46\00:21:36.59 In fact, He was going to enter Jerusalem as a King. 00:21:36.62\00:21:41.30 Notice, Desire Of Ages, page 570. 00:21:41.76\00:21:44.57 I'm going to read several statements now 00:21:44.60\00:21:46.40 from, Desire Of Ages, which describe the reason 00:21:46.43\00:21:50.11 for this event and how it transpired. 00:21:50.14\00:21:53.07 It says there on page 570... 00:21:53.58\00:21:56.21 So did Jesus know that when He rode this beast 00:22:03.12\00:22:07.02 that the people were going to understand that He was a King? 00:22:07.22\00:22:09.89 Of course. 00:22:09.92\00:22:11.26 By the way, did Jesus know that this was going to 00:22:28.11\00:22:30.75 lead to a great disappointment? 00:22:30.78\00:22:32.35 Notice, Desire Of Ages, page 571. 00:22:32.65\00:22:35.75 Of the people claiming that He was the Messiah 00:22:43.49\00:22:45.99 and praising Him as the Messiah. 00:22:46.03\00:22:48.86 Notice what she says... 00:22:48.90\00:22:50.23 Did Jesus know that they were going to be disappointed? 00:22:53.37\00:22:55.54 Why didn't He just cut it off and say, 00:22:56.07\00:22:57.64 "No, these people are going to be bitterly disappointed. 00:22:57.67\00:23:00.31 They misunderstand prophecy. 00:23:00.34\00:23:01.94 So let's abort the plan right now." 00:23:01.98\00:23:04.31 He knew full well, and He staged the event. 00:23:04.91\00:23:08.32 She continues saying... 00:23:08.65\00:23:09.98 In other words, it was important for people to rivet their eyes 00:23:27.87\00:23:31.57 upon Jesus and know that He was fulfilling prophecy, 00:23:31.61\00:23:34.64 even if they misunderstood. 00:23:34.68\00:23:36.01 Because later the reason for the disappointment 00:23:36.04\00:23:39.25 could be explained. 00:23:39.45\00:23:41.35 Now I want to read a statement about the expectations 00:23:41.92\00:23:45.19 of the people; how the people felt when Jesus entered 00:23:45.22\00:23:48.22 Jerusalem triumphantly. 00:23:48.26\00:23:50.06 This is, Desire Of Ages, page 570. 00:23:50.09\00:23:53.16 This is speaking about the disciples. 00:24:08.38\00:24:09.71 So the people are enthused, they're pumped up. 00:24:23.39\00:24:26.03 "This is the Messiah, He's the King. 00:24:26.06\00:24:27.86 He's going to march into Jerusalem. 00:24:27.90\00:24:29.43 He's going to overthrow the Romans. 00:24:29.46\00:24:31.20 And He's going to sit on the throne. 00:24:31.23\00:24:32.73 And He's going to put Israel where it should be; 00:24:32.77\00:24:35.24 at the apex of the world." 00:24:35.27\00:24:37.37 Now allow me to read you an explanation of the 00:24:38.24\00:24:40.71 triumphal entry itself and how the multitudes 00:24:40.74\00:24:43.65 reacted to the triumphal entry. 00:24:43.68\00:24:45.35 This is, Desire Of Ages, page 570 once again. 00:24:45.45\00:24:49.15 Let me ask you, was their emancipation at hand? 00:25:22.82\00:25:25.02 Was it? 00:25:26.19\00:25:27.52 Yes, but it wasn't the kind of emancipation 00:25:27.56\00:25:31.29 that they were expecting. 00:25:31.33\00:25:32.89 They were right about the timing, but they were 00:25:33.70\00:25:35.53 wrong about what? 00:25:35.56\00:25:36.93 They were wrong about the event which was going to take place. 00:25:37.23\00:25:40.74 She continues saying, "In imagination they saw 00:25:41.07\00:25:44.37 the Roman armies driven from Jerusalem..." 00:25:44.41\00:25:47.61 It's interesting to notice how Ellen White continues 00:26:00.12\00:26:02.92 describing this scene. 00:26:02.96\00:26:04.43 She says, first of all, that this procession started 00:26:04.69\00:26:09.26 with the disciples. 00:26:09.30\00:26:10.93 Then as Jesus and the disciples were marching towards Jerusalem, 00:26:11.43\00:26:15.77 those who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover 00:26:15.97\00:26:18.81 joined the crowd. 00:26:18.91\00:26:20.24 By the way, there were more than two million people, 00:26:20.28\00:26:22.64 according to Josephus, that would come to Jerusalem 00:26:22.68\00:26:25.45 during the time of the Passover. 00:26:25.61\00:26:27.28 So you can imagine the tumult that this caused in Jerusalem. 00:26:27.32\00:26:31.25 So she says that then the multitudes who had made their 00:26:31.42\00:26:34.39 pilgrimage to Jerusalem joined the crowd. 00:26:34.42\00:26:37.53 Then she says, as Jesus neared Jerusalem 00:26:37.56\00:26:40.13 the crowd grew larger and larger. 00:26:40.23\00:26:42.90 And she says that as the people sang, the praise could be heard 00:26:42.93\00:26:47.44 echoing against the hills. 00:26:47.47\00:26:49.87 And then she says, in the procession were those 00:26:50.61\00:26:53.98 from whom Jesus had cast out demons, 00:26:54.01\00:26:56.48 the blind whose eyes He had opened, 00:26:56.81\00:26:59.38 the paralytics whose legs He had restored, 00:26:59.41\00:27:02.28 the lepers He had cleansed, the widows and the orphans 00:27:02.32\00:27:05.62 He had encouraged, even the dead whom He had resurrected. 00:27:05.65\00:27:08.86 In fact, she says that Lazarus was the one who actually 00:27:08.96\00:27:11.63 led the colt as they were marching; 00:27:11.66\00:27:14.00 that man whom Jesus has resurrected. 00:27:14.03\00:27:16.33 So you can just sense the excitement. 00:27:16.60\00:27:19.00 In fact, let's read Matthew 21:8-11 00:27:19.20\00:27:23.61 to catch the biblical perspective of this 00:27:23.64\00:27:26.21 great publicity event. 00:27:26.24\00:27:28.54 It says there in verse 8... 00:27:29.08\00:27:31.21 By the way, did Jesus have a big following in the good times? 00:27:43.93\00:27:47.80 Did everybody get emotional, excited, and join the 00:27:48.30\00:27:51.27 bandwagon and say, "This is the Messiah." 00:27:51.30\00:27:53.64 Less than a week later they would be crying out, 00:27:53.67\00:27:56.17 "Crucify Him." 00:27:56.20\00:27:57.74 The majority of them, by the way. 00:27:58.34\00:28:00.04 She continues saying... 00:28:01.44\00:28:02.88 They're actually quoting Psalm 118:26, 00:28:15.39\00:28:18.99 which is a Messianic prophecy. 00:28:19.03\00:28:20.96 And verse 10 says... 00:28:21.76\00:28:23.10 Notice all of the eyes are on Jesus. 00:28:27.64\00:28:29.67 People are excited. 00:28:29.70\00:28:31.04 Jesus is going to fulfill prophecy. 00:28:31.07\00:28:32.87 What they don't know is that He's going to fulfill prophecy 00:28:33.07\00:28:35.31 differently than what they envisioned. 00:28:35.51\00:28:37.61 Because they had misunderstood the meaning of Bible prophecy. 00:28:37.65\00:28:41.38 And so it says in verse 10... 00:28:42.18\00:28:43.52 It's interesting to read the parallel account of this event. 00:28:56.00\00:28:59.07 It's found in Luke 19:37-39. 00:28:59.30\00:29:03.41 Luke 19:37-39 00:29:03.67\00:29:07.31 This passage is describing the same event, 00:29:07.61\00:29:10.05 but it has different details. 00:29:10.08\00:29:12.48 It says there... 00:29:13.05\00:29:14.38 Was this a sweet experience at this point? 00:29:28.60\00:29:30.70 Was it sweet? 00:29:31.33\00:29:32.67 Oh yes, it was very sweet. 00:29:32.70\00:29:34.40 Notice the words... 00:29:34.44\00:29:35.77 Did they believe He was a King? Absolutely. 00:29:49.18\00:29:51.55 By the way, do you know who was shouting the loudest 00:30:03.06\00:30:07.04 acclaiming Jesus as King? 00:30:07.14\00:30:09.37 I can assure you that it was not the scribes and the Pharisees. 00:30:10.34\00:30:13.48 None of the religious leaders of Israel, the great men in Israel 00:30:14.78\00:30:19.21 of the church of that day, understood prophecy 00:30:19.25\00:30:22.28 or even were interested in accepting anything 00:30:22.32\00:30:26.25 related to Jesus. 00:30:26.29\00:30:27.79 In fact, God chose humble instruments, little children, 00:30:28.19\00:30:32.86 to actually proclaim these words. 00:30:33.13\00:30:35.46 In fact, let's read it. 00:30:35.50\00:30:36.83 Matthew 21:15-16, the children are the ones 00:30:36.87\00:30:40.74 who are particularly singing and praising this King 00:30:40.77\00:30:45.41 who is coming into Jerusalem. 00:30:45.44\00:30:46.98 It says there in verse 15... 00:30:47.18\00:30:49.74 In other words, God did not choose any of the prominent 00:31:14.40\00:31:16.50 religious leaders of the day and age to proclaim 00:31:16.54\00:31:19.14 the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. 00:31:19.31\00:31:21.08 He chose the lepers, and the blind, and the paralytics, 00:31:21.44\00:31:24.98 the people who had been resurrected, 00:31:25.01\00:31:26.35 the people who had been delivered from demons; 00:31:26.38\00:31:28.08 the common populace, to proclaim this great event. 00:31:28.12\00:31:31.32 He bypassed the great religious leaders 00:31:31.35\00:31:35.26 because they were soon to reject Jesus. 00:31:35.29\00:31:38.23 You know, you can catch a little bit of the tumult in Jerusalem 00:31:38.69\00:31:44.00 when the two disciples were walking on the road to Emmaus 00:31:44.20\00:31:47.00 and Jesus caught up to them. 00:31:47.04\00:31:48.47 And Jesus asked them, "What were you talking about?" 00:31:48.67\00:31:51.14 In fact, let's read this in Luke 24:17-18. 00:31:52.91\00:31:57.21 Luke 24:17-18 00:31:57.65\00:31:59.65 "Is it possible that someone who has been in Jerusalem 00:32:26.61\00:32:30.91 this weekend would actually not know about 00:32:30.95\00:32:34.42 what has happened there?" 00:32:34.45\00:32:36.95 So let me ask you, was there great publicity to this event, 00:32:37.42\00:32:41.06 to the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament? 00:32:41.09\00:32:44.19 Yes. Were the people wrong about their understanding 00:32:44.23\00:32:49.73 of Bible prophecy? 00:32:49.76\00:32:51.10 They most certainly were. 00:32:51.13\00:32:52.47 They were wrong about the kind of King 00:32:52.70\00:32:55.77 that Jesus was going to be. 00:32:56.20\00:32:58.47 In other words, they misunderstood prophecy. 00:32:59.07\00:33:02.28 Because they thought that He was going to be a King 00:33:02.31\00:33:04.38 sitting on a literal throne in Jerusalem. 00:33:04.48\00:33:07.95 By the way, was Jesus a King when He came into Jerusalem? 00:33:07.98\00:33:12.15 Was He going to be crowned a King? 00:33:13.09\00:33:15.06 Yes He was. 00:33:15.16\00:33:16.49 Not King of the kingdom of glory, 00:33:16.52\00:33:19.16 but the suffering servant King of the kingdom of grace. 00:33:19.79\00:33:24.03 In fact, allow me to share with you several interesting details 00:33:24.07\00:33:27.47 that show that Jesus, in the final procession, 00:33:27.57\00:33:30.64 in the last few hours of His life, 00:33:30.74\00:33:33.34 or the last few days at least of His life, 00:33:33.38\00:33:35.84 you have this theme of kingship attached to Jesus. 00:33:36.14\00:33:39.98 I'll just share these quickly. 00:33:40.02\00:33:41.45 Shortly before Jesus went to the cross, 00:33:42.25\00:33:46.15 He spoke the words of John chapter 12 where He said, 00:33:46.52\00:33:50.13 "Now is the judgment of this world. 00:33:50.43\00:33:52.26 Now will the ruler of this world be cast out." 00:33:52.43\00:33:55.33 He's saying, "This ruler is going to be cast out, 00:33:55.36\00:33:57.23 and this Ruler is going to be installed on the throne." 00:33:57.43\00:33:59.80 So He's predicting that He's going to take over the throne. 00:33:59.83\00:34:03.00 We notice also that Jesus had a procession as a king. 00:34:03.64\00:34:07.71 You know, when a king was going to be crowned, 00:34:07.74\00:34:09.08 there was a procession to the place of the coronation. 00:34:09.11\00:34:12.05 That was the triumphal entry. 00:34:12.08\00:34:13.65 By the way, was Jesus anointed? 00:34:13.82\00:34:15.95 Was His head anointed with oil like kings? 00:34:15.98\00:34:18.05 Yes. You remember what Mary Magdalene did to Him. 00:34:18.15\00:34:21.69 Also, was a crown placed on the head of Jesus? 00:34:21.72\00:34:24.79 Yes, a crown was placed on His head. 00:34:24.83\00:34:26.70 Was a royal purple robe placed upon Him? 00:34:26.73\00:34:29.80 Absolutely. 00:34:29.83\00:34:31.17 Purple robes were placed on kings. 00:34:31.20\00:34:33.47 Did the people render Him homage as King? 00:34:33.57\00:34:36.54 Yes. They made fun of Him, but they still paid Him homage. 00:34:36.64\00:34:40.28 Was a reed placed in His right hand? 00:34:40.94\00:34:42.88 You know, every king has a scepter. 00:34:42.91\00:34:45.25 In fact, when Pilate introduced Jesus, he said what? 00:34:45.41\00:34:48.52 "Behold, your King." 00:34:48.68\00:34:51.49 In fact, above the cross where Jesus was crucified 00:34:51.79\00:34:54.72 there was an inscription that said, "Jesus of Nazareth, 00:34:54.82\00:34:58.43 the King of the Jews." 00:34:58.46\00:35:00.23 So let me ask you, was Jesus a King? 00:35:00.80\00:35:03.47 He most certainly was a King. 00:35:03.87\00:35:05.37 Did He fulfill prophecy as to the day, 00:35:05.60\00:35:09.24 the hour, because it was evening, 00:35:09.74\00:35:11.97 as to the month, and as to the year? 00:35:12.37\00:35:15.08 He most certainly did. 00:35:15.11\00:35:16.44 But the people totally misunderstood 00:35:16.48\00:35:19.51 the meaning of prophecy. 00:35:19.55\00:35:21.32 They misunderstood the type of King that Jesus was going to be. 00:35:21.35\00:35:25.62 And therefore, they were deeply and profoundly disappointed. 00:35:26.19\00:35:31.83 And do you know that most of those people 00:35:32.36\00:35:35.46 that had joined the procession apostatized, 00:35:35.76\00:35:41.44 and they said that they had been deceived. 00:35:41.47\00:35:43.71 And less than a week later they were crying out 00:35:43.74\00:35:47.21 at the top of their lungs, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!" 00:35:47.24\00:35:52.18 Because they had joined by excitement. 00:35:52.21\00:35:54.35 In fact, notice Mark 15:12-15. 00:35:54.78\00:35:59.02 The majority forsook the movement 00:35:59.05\00:36:00.56 because they said, "This has been a deception." 00:36:00.59\00:36:02.56 You know, "This wasn't the Messiah. 00:36:02.59\00:36:04.36 This wasn't the King. Look, He was killed." 00:36:04.39\00:36:06.59 And so because their experience was superficial, 00:36:06.93\00:36:09.80 they had joined in the good times, 00:36:09.83\00:36:11.77 in times of excitement, they forsook Jesus 00:36:11.80\00:36:16.44 saying that they had followed a deception. 00:36:16.47\00:36:18.84 Notice Mark 15:12-15. 00:36:18.87\00:36:21.71 However, there was a small remnant 00:36:48.77\00:36:52.77 who did not reject Jesus. 00:36:53.84\00:36:56.21 They hung on to their faith even though 00:36:56.24\00:36:59.08 they were deeply disappointed. 00:36:59.11\00:37:01.48 A very small remnant who said, "We believe that 00:37:01.85\00:37:05.65 prophecy was fulfilled. 00:37:05.69\00:37:07.19 We can't understand what happened. 00:37:07.42\00:37:09.59 We've been disappointed. 00:37:09.62\00:37:10.99 Bitter disappointment after this sweet experience. 00:37:11.03\00:37:14.13 All of this publicity. 00:37:14.16\00:37:15.50 There has to be something that we missed." 00:37:16.63\00:37:19.87 You know, two of these were the disciples that went 00:37:20.70\00:37:22.97 on the road to Emmaus. 00:37:23.00\00:37:24.51 They represent the small remnant that remained faithful. 00:37:24.77\00:37:27.64 They did not give up their faith. 00:37:27.68\00:37:29.24 In fact, let's join them as they walk on the road to Emmaus. 00:37:29.64\00:37:33.35 And I'm going to read you a passage from, Desire Of Ages, 00:37:33.65\00:37:36.99 page 571, on the feeling of these two men. 00:37:37.39\00:37:43.46 They didn't know. 00:38:01.34\00:38:02.68 And in Luke 24:21, we find the bitter disappointment 00:38:03.35\00:38:08.08 of these two disciples, these two followers of Jesus. 00:38:08.12\00:38:10.99 We know the name of one of them. 00:38:11.02\00:38:12.35 We don't know the name of the other. 00:38:12.39\00:38:13.72 The name of one was Cleopas. 00:38:14.12\00:38:16.29 I remember Dr. Mervin Maxwell, whom I had as a teacher 00:38:16.83\00:38:19.39 at the seminary, always use to say, 00:38:19.43\00:38:21.13 "Perhaps the other disciple was Mrs. Cleopas." 00:38:21.16\00:38:25.33 We have no evidence for that. 00:38:25.37\00:38:27.34 But it's an interesting little comment. 00:38:27.37\00:38:30.54 Those of you who knew Dr. Maxwell would catch 00:38:30.57\00:38:33.91 the little bit of humor. 00:38:33.94\00:38:35.28 He was a very humorous person. 00:38:35.31\00:38:36.64 But in Luke 24:21, one of the disciples says to Jesus, 00:38:36.68\00:38:42.18 "But we trusted that it had been He 00:38:42.28\00:38:46.55 which should have redeemed Israel." 00:38:46.86\00:38:49.86 Were they profoundly disappointed? 00:38:51.73\00:38:53.40 "We thought He was the one. 00:38:54.10\00:38:55.66 We thought He was the One who was going to 00:38:56.77\00:38:58.53 emancipate our people. 00:38:58.57\00:39:00.87 And now it's the third day since He died." 00:39:01.97\00:39:04.37 Their hopes were dashed. 00:39:04.84\00:39:07.64 But their hopes did not totally disappear. 00:39:08.18\00:39:10.41 By the way, how did the church of that day 00:39:11.51\00:39:14.58 accept the message of the death of Jesus? 00:39:15.45\00:39:20.16 Did they embrace it? 00:39:22.62\00:39:23.96 Listen, folks, the established church of the day 00:39:25.16\00:39:28.96 was the apostate church of the day. 00:39:29.00\00:39:31.10 The remnant, the faithful remnant, was the 00:39:32.43\00:39:35.17 true church of the day. 00:39:35.20\00:39:37.11 Because only those who remained with Jesus, 00:39:38.24\00:39:40.44 among whom were these two disciples, 00:39:40.48\00:39:42.38 these two faithful disciples, they did not lose their faith. 00:39:42.41\00:39:45.71 They were right, 00:39:46.01\00:39:47.35 and the religious establishment was wrong. 00:39:47.38\00:39:49.45 You say, "How's that?" 00:39:51.15\00:39:52.49 What happened when the multitudes were acclaiming 00:39:54.06\00:39:56.59 Jesus as King? 00:39:56.62\00:39:57.96 The scribes and the Pharisees said, "Be quiet. 00:39:59.59\00:40:01.90 Don't sing this." 00:40:02.63\00:40:03.97 By the way, I don't know whether you've noticed in 00:40:05.33\00:40:06.97 Matthew chapter 21 immediately after the triumphal entry, 00:40:07.00\00:40:09.94 Jesus gives all of the parables about the rejection 00:40:10.64\00:40:13.58 of the Jewish nation as His chosen people. 00:40:13.61\00:40:16.58 In the next two chapters, chapter 22 and chapter 23, 00:40:18.05\00:40:23.79 you have the experience of the vineyard workers, 00:40:24.22\00:40:26.65 you have the parable of the great banquet, 00:40:27.92\00:40:31.03 and you have the woes on the scribes and the Pharisees. 00:40:31.23\00:40:34.60 And you have that statement where Jesus says, 00:40:35.16\00:40:37.00 "The kingdom will be taken from you and will be given 00:40:37.03\00:40:42.20 to a people who produce the fruits thereof." 00:40:42.24\00:40:45.31 In other words, the religious establishment became apostate 00:40:46.01\00:40:50.05 and was rejected by God, whereas those, that small remnant 00:40:50.61\00:40:55.68 of humble people, not the prominent people... 00:40:55.72\00:40:58.85 Although there were a few prominent ones, you know, like 00:40:58.89\00:41:01.49 for example Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus. 00:41:01.72\00:41:05.79 But the great majority of them were humble people. 00:41:05.83\00:41:08.46 They were the ones who were right with God. 00:41:08.56\00:41:12.13 Desire Of Ages, page 574, we have this comment... 00:41:13.17\00:41:16.57 This is during the triumphal entry. 00:41:20.48\00:41:22.51 That was the reaction of the church of the day. 00:41:42.33\00:41:46.30 And by the way, I'm setting the stage for when we talk about 00:41:46.33\00:41:49.87 the great disappointment in 1844, if someone has 00:41:49.90\00:41:53.27 not already caught that. 00:41:53.31\00:41:55.31 Because in 1844, after the first angel's message was 00:41:56.91\00:42:00.35 proclaimed with a loud voice... 00:42:00.38\00:42:01.92 I'll get ahead of myself just for a moment here. 00:42:01.95\00:42:04.19 ...the next angel's message says Babylon is what? 00:42:05.45\00:42:09.49 Babylon is fallen. 00:42:09.72\00:42:11.69 Babylon has become the synagogue of Satan. 00:42:12.56\00:42:14.83 And folks, there was a small remnant who remained faithful 00:42:14.86\00:42:17.93 to God who said that the disappointment 00:42:17.97\00:42:20.44 was of God and that they had misunderstood prophecy, 00:42:20.74\00:42:25.24 and that Jesus had done something different 00:42:25.41\00:42:27.81 than they had expected but He had fulfilled prophecy. 00:42:27.84\00:42:30.88 And they re-studied Scripture, 00:42:31.21\00:42:32.61 and now they understood the truth. 00:42:32.65\00:42:35.15 So there's nothing new under the sun. 00:42:36.18\00:42:38.09 Less than a week after the triumphal entry, 00:42:41.39\00:42:44.29 the Jewish Sanhedrin... 00:42:44.66\00:42:46.39 ...which was the leadership of the Jewish nation, 00:42:49.90\00:42:54.64 sentenced Jesus to death. 00:42:54.67\00:42:57.04 John 19:7 speaks about that. 00:42:57.54\00:43:00.68 On the cross, we're told in Matthew 27:41, 00:43:01.41\00:43:04.85 that the scribes, the chief priests, and the elders 00:43:05.05\00:43:08.92 mocked and reviled Him. 00:43:08.95\00:43:11.05 And then, you know, when Jesus resurrected, 00:43:12.75\00:43:14.79 who were the ones who tried to bribe the soldiers 00:43:14.82\00:43:17.89 to lie about the resurrection of Jesus? 00:43:17.93\00:43:20.60 It was the leaders of the Jewish nation. 00:43:21.13\00:43:23.40 In fact, after Jesus ascended to heaven, 00:43:24.43\00:43:27.44 they became persecutors of the remnant. 00:43:27.47\00:43:30.27 They became persecutors of the church. 00:43:30.31\00:43:32.47 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:43:33.71\00:43:35.04 Now after the great disappointment, 00:43:37.35\00:43:41.38 after this sweet experience that became bitter 00:43:42.12\00:43:45.55 because they misunderstood Bible prophecy, 00:43:45.59\00:43:47.79 these humble people who proclaimed the message, 00:43:48.09\00:43:50.79 how did Christ explain to them 00:43:51.73\00:43:54.90 the reason for their disappointment? 00:43:55.26\00:43:57.33 This is the most interesting part of our study. 00:43:58.30\00:44:01.07 After the disappointment, Jesus came close 00:44:01.27\00:44:05.24 to those who had belonged to this movement, 00:44:05.77\00:44:08.14 those who had not lost their faith, 00:44:08.18\00:44:09.94 to the remnant, and He explained the reason for their 00:44:10.15\00:44:13.75 disappointment by appealing to Scripture. 00:44:13.78\00:44:18.45 He opened unto them the Scriptures. 00:44:20.79\00:44:22.82 And listen up, He did not open up the Scriptures to the 00:44:22.86\00:44:25.79 most prominent people that had belonged to the movement. 00:44:25.83\00:44:28.26 He opened up the Scriptures to two disciples. 00:44:28.30\00:44:31.03 We know the name of one; Cleopas. 00:44:31.07\00:44:32.70 But who was Cleopas? 00:44:32.73\00:44:34.07 And we don't even know the name of the other. 00:44:34.10\00:44:35.80 As they were walking on the road to Emmaus 00:44:36.71\00:44:38.91 Jesus catches up to them. 00:44:38.94\00:44:40.54 And He starts talking with them. 00:44:41.54\00:44:43.38 And in this very interesting conversation, He says, 00:44:45.08\00:44:49.22 you know, "What were you talking about along the way?" 00:44:49.25\00:44:52.45 They said, "Oh, you know, are You the only person 00:44:52.49\00:44:56.06 in this area who doesn't know what went on 00:44:56.09\00:44:57.93 in Jerusalem this weekend? 00:44:57.96\00:44:59.46 That the fellow that we thought was the Messiah, 00:45:00.66\00:45:02.76 you know, our hopes were dashed. 00:45:03.10\00:45:05.43 Our joy was turned to sorrow. 00:45:05.63\00:45:07.37 And now it's the third day since He died. 00:45:07.60\00:45:09.94 Obviously you're not from this region." 00:45:11.31\00:45:13.17 I want you to notice, Desire Of Ages, page 571. 00:45:14.78\00:45:18.08 This is why Jesus, even though He knew they were going to be 00:45:24.22\00:45:26.35 disappointed, He still went ahead with the plan. 00:45:26.39\00:45:29.49 Let me ask you, would they study Scripture 00:45:50.51\00:45:52.05 afterwards to find out where their mistake was? 00:45:52.08\00:45:54.28 Of course. 00:45:54.32\00:45:55.65 In fact, Jesus, in talking to the two disciples, 00:46:07.50\00:46:10.73 I want you to notice the method that He uses 00:46:10.77\00:46:13.00 to dissipate their disappointment. 00:46:14.00\00:46:15.97 Luke 24:25-27 00:46:16.00\00:46:19.57 Luke 24:25-27 00:46:19.97\00:46:23.55 This is on the road to Emmaus. 00:46:23.58\00:46:25.45 See, Jesus wasn't always politically correct. 00:46:33.59\00:46:36.46 How did Jesus explain the reason for their disappointment? 00:47:06.59\00:47:09.26 He took them to the writings of Moses, 00:47:10.99\00:47:13.03 the writings of the prophets. 00:47:13.83\00:47:15.60 And in all of the Scriptures He showed them 00:47:16.06\00:47:18.90 the things concerning Himself. 00:47:18.93\00:47:20.67 He explained to them Bible prophecy. 00:47:20.87\00:47:23.20 You know, I would have loved to have been there 00:47:24.44\00:47:26.71 for that Bible study. 00:47:26.74\00:47:28.08 Because I wonder which passages He might have used. 00:47:29.31\00:47:31.51 Maybe the story of the sacrifice of Isaac. 00:47:31.55\00:47:35.05 Maybe explaining the Passover lamb. 00:47:37.22\00:47:40.39 The prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:47:41.12\00:47:43.32 The suffering servant of Isaiah 53. 00:47:44.03\00:47:46.90 He probably took a combination of all of these prophecies 00:47:48.40\00:47:50.97 and said, "Listen, folks, you let your expectations 00:47:51.00\00:47:55.57 blind your eyes to the meaning of prophecy. 00:47:55.60\00:47:58.01 Look, it says very clearly that the Messiah would come, 00:47:58.21\00:48:01.08 He would be a perfect Lamb." 00:48:01.44\00:48:03.21 The first disappointment with John the Baptist. 00:48:03.51\00:48:05.88 "And after He lived a perfect life, 00:48:06.18\00:48:08.45 sin would be placed on Him. 00:48:08.85\00:48:10.79 He would be killed for the sins of the world. 00:48:11.02\00:48:14.22 And then He would resurrect the third day. 00:48:14.26\00:48:16.79 How could you miss it?" 00:48:16.89\00:48:19.73 By the way, do you know how these disciples reacted? 00:48:22.20\00:48:25.00 Later on they're on their way back to Jerusalem. 00:48:26.20\00:48:28.27 See, when they went into their home, Jesus raised His hands 00:48:28.30\00:48:33.34 to pray for the meal, and they saw the scars on His hands. 00:48:33.38\00:48:37.01 And then He disappeared from their midst. 00:48:38.08\00:48:39.45 By the way, Jesus did not materialize and de-materialize. 00:48:39.48\00:48:43.08 People say, "Oh, He walked through walls." 00:48:44.25\00:48:45.59 No He didn't walk through walls. 00:48:45.62\00:48:46.96 Desire Of Ages explains it beautifully. 00:48:48.32\00:48:50.46 In Desire Of Ages, Ellen White says that when the disciples 00:48:51.19\00:48:53.93 got back to Jerusalem, she says that the disciples, 00:48:53.96\00:48:57.90 after the two identified themselves, opened the door, 00:48:57.93\00:49:00.90 the two disciples went in. 00:49:01.57\00:49:04.37 And along with them through the open door went Jesus... 00:49:04.41\00:49:07.01 ...unseen to their eyes. 00:49:07.74\00:49:09.08 Oh, so He did materialize, because they couldn't see Him. 00:49:09.11\00:49:11.45 Well Jesus disappeared many times during His ministry too. 00:49:12.15\00:49:15.18 So do you think Jesus just materialized and 00:49:15.65\00:49:17.89 de-materialized all the time? 00:49:17.92\00:49:19.25 Of course not. 00:49:19.29\00:49:20.62 Angels hid Jesus from the sight of the people. 00:49:20.66\00:49:23.43 But He was still a human being. 00:49:23.69\00:49:25.53 And so they're on their way back to Jerusalem 00:49:26.03\00:49:28.00 and they're talking about now Jesus, the living Jesus. 00:49:28.03\00:49:31.33 "He's fulfilled prophecy. 00:49:31.37\00:49:32.70 We're starting to understand." 00:49:32.73\00:49:34.07 Notice Luke 24:32. 00:49:34.27\00:49:37.04 One of them says... 00:49:37.44\00:49:38.77 They say, "Now we understand the Scriptures. 00:49:50.12\00:49:52.29 Now we understand prophecy. 00:49:52.32\00:49:53.96 We were wrong about the event, we were right about the time. 00:49:53.99\00:49:57.43 This Man is the Messiah." 00:49:57.46\00:49:59.86 Verses 33-35, Luke 24... 00:50:00.76\00:50:03.73 And so now Jesus appears before the disciples 00:50:29.72\00:50:32.43 in the upper room. 00:50:33.09\00:50:34.43 Can you imagine their surprise when Jesus appears to them? 00:50:34.76\00:50:37.83 And now Jesus is going to explain the reason 00:50:38.80\00:50:42.24 for the disappointment. 00:50:42.27\00:50:43.61 And I want you to notice that once again He is going to use 00:50:43.64\00:50:46.47 the Scriptures, the very Scriptures that 00:50:46.68\00:50:48.48 they had misunderstood. 00:50:48.51\00:50:50.05 Luke 24:44 00:50:50.25\00:50:54.48 Had He already spoken these words to them before? 00:51:03.89\00:51:06.09 Had He tried to explain this to them before? 00:51:07.46\00:51:09.50 Yes. 00:51:10.37\00:51:11.70 Was He to blame for their misunderstanding? 00:51:12.23\00:51:14.44 No. 00:51:14.84\00:51:16.17 Did they revisit Scripture? 00:51:44.93\00:51:46.57 Sure they did. 00:51:46.60\00:51:47.94 He promises to send the Holy Spirit. 00:52:11.99\00:52:13.90 How interesting. 00:52:25.47\00:52:26.88 Jesus opens unto them the Scriptures, and He says, 00:52:27.54\00:52:31.41 "I have a mission for you. 00:52:31.51\00:52:32.98 You must go and you must prophesy again. 00:52:34.48\00:52:36.89 See, you were proclaiming that I was going to be a King 00:52:37.92\00:52:40.16 sitting in Jerusalem upon the throne overthrowing the Romans. 00:52:40.19\00:52:43.66 That's not it. 00:52:43.96\00:52:45.29 Go to Jerusalem, wait for the promise of the Spirit. 00:52:45.59\00:52:49.73 And when the promise of the Spirit falls upon you, 00:52:50.17\00:52:53.44 then go out and explain the Scriptures that I have 00:52:53.70\00:52:57.77 explained to you, explain those to others." 00:52:57.81\00:53:00.98 That Jesus is the perfect Lamb. 00:53:01.41\00:53:03.61 That Jesus has died on the cross for sin. 00:53:03.65\00:53:07.18 And now the Sanctuary is open for the forgiveness of sin, 00:53:07.22\00:53:10.89 for people to come to Jesus and accept Him 00:53:10.92\00:53:14.06 as their Intercessor and as their Lord. 00:53:14.09\00:53:17.53 And then of course, on the day of Pentecost you have 00:53:19.66\00:53:22.83 the establishment of the small remnant of the Christian church. 00:53:22.86\00:53:28.90 Let me ask you this: 00:53:30.91\00:53:32.24 Was the Christian church established 00:53:33.98\00:53:36.91 after a great disappointment? 00:53:37.38\00:53:40.02 Was it? 00:53:41.95\00:53:43.28 It can't be of God then. 00:53:43.32\00:53:44.65 The Christian church can't be of God. 00:53:47.49\00:53:49.22 How can a church be the true church 00:53:50.79\00:53:53.43 if it was founded after a disappointment? 00:53:55.33\00:53:57.83 Was the Christian church the true church? 00:54:01.37\00:54:03.61 It most certainly was. 00:54:04.27\00:54:05.67 Did the disappointment disannul the fact 00:54:07.04\00:54:09.88 that the Christian church was the chosen instrument of Christ 00:54:10.05\00:54:13.58 to proclaim the message about the first coming 00:54:13.62\00:54:16.58 to the whole world? 00:54:16.62\00:54:17.95 Of course not. 00:54:17.99\00:54:19.32 Now allow me to get ahead of myself a little bit. 00:54:19.45\00:54:21.52 Next Sabbath we're going to talk about 00:54:23.56\00:54:25.59 the Pentecostal disappointment. 00:54:25.63\00:54:28.00 We're going to talk about the disappointment when Jesus 00:54:28.60\00:54:30.30 goes into the next phase of His ministry. 00:54:30.33\00:54:32.20 Now He's going to go into the Holy Place. 00:54:32.23\00:54:35.37 And when He goes into the Holy Place, 00:54:36.10\00:54:37.61 the same process all over again. 00:54:37.64\00:54:39.67 Everything just the same. 00:54:40.21\00:54:41.64 Same steps, same problems. 00:54:41.68\00:54:44.18 And then we're going to notice in our study after that, 00:54:45.55\00:54:48.52 that Jesus is going to go into the Most Holy Place in 1844. 00:54:48.55\00:54:52.85 And there's a great disappointment. 00:54:53.52\00:54:55.26 Because they misunderstand prophecy. 00:54:55.86\00:54:57.76 They misunderstand what Jesus is going to do. 00:54:57.79\00:55:00.73 They're right about the time, 00:55:00.76\00:55:02.10 but they're wrong about the event. 00:55:02.13\00:55:03.50 And after the disappointment, the Christian world says 00:55:05.43\00:55:08.54 this was a deception. 00:55:08.57\00:55:09.90 There's a small remnant that is faithful to God. 00:55:12.27\00:55:16.31 And you have the establishment of the 00:55:16.34\00:55:17.91 Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:55:17.95\00:55:19.45 Do you know that one argument that's used 00:55:20.75\00:55:22.68 against the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:55:22.72\00:55:24.19 is that the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:55:24.42\00:55:25.75 originated with a disappointment? 00:55:25.79\00:55:27.39 "Can't be the true church. 00:55:29.42\00:55:30.99 Because you misinterpreted Bible prophecy. 00:55:32.03\00:55:34.00 Jesus didn't come." 00:55:34.03\00:55:35.36 Well the fact is that if that's true of the 00:55:36.13\00:55:38.30 Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:55:38.33\00:55:39.67 it's true of the Christian church. 00:55:39.70\00:55:41.74 Because the Christian church also originated 00:55:42.54\00:55:45.47 with a misunderstanding of Bible prophecy. 00:55:46.21\00:55:50.21 And it originated with a bitter disappointment. 00:55:50.81\00:55:53.62 And it originated with an explanation 00:55:53.98\00:55:56.28 of Scripture after the fact, explaining the way prophecy 00:55:56.48\00:56:00.09 was truly to be interpreted. 00:56:00.12\00:56:01.89 Are you following me? 00:56:02.52\00:56:03.86 So don't be intimidated when people tell you, 00:56:04.13\00:56:06.70 "Oh the Adventist church, that can't be the true church. 00:56:06.73\00:56:08.83 Because it originated with a disappointment." 00:56:08.86\00:56:10.63 Yes it did. 00:56:10.67\00:56:12.00 By the way, it's interesting to notice that in 1844 00:56:13.67\00:56:18.54 God bypassed all of the great religious leaders of the world 00:56:19.47\00:56:23.71 to proclaim this message, and He chose a humble old farmer. 00:56:24.61\00:56:28.92 And the PhD's today say, "Oh William Miller, he was so long; 00:56:31.32\00:56:35.79 he was uneducated. 00:56:35.82\00:56:37.43 But we are PhD's." 00:56:38.19\00:56:39.93 Well I'll have you know that at each stage 00:56:41.36\00:56:43.33 God bypasses the intelligentsia. 00:56:43.53\00:56:46.13 And He chooses the humble at heart. 00:56:46.80\00:56:49.20 Because He knows that the humble at heart 00:56:49.54\00:56:51.64 can be used by Him. 00:56:51.67\00:56:53.07 The same is true of John the Baptist. 00:56:54.54\00:56:56.64 John the Baptist didn't even study in the rabbinical schools. 00:56:57.15\00:57:01.08 Is that right? 00:57:02.35\00:57:03.69 On the day of Pentecost who does God use? 00:57:03.72\00:57:05.29 Peter... 00:57:06.62\00:57:08.12 ...the theologian. 00:57:09.72\00:57:11.06 No. 00:57:11.09\00:57:12.43 Peter was what? 00:57:12.46\00:57:13.80 A fisherman. 00:57:13.83\00:57:15.16 And God says that in the end time, He will use 00:57:15.70\00:57:17.73 few great men. 00:57:17.93\00:57:20.07 I hope, after we've studied this this morning, 00:57:20.64\00:57:22.60 that we understand a little bit better 00:57:22.64\00:57:24.24 the steps that Jesus follows in the plan of salvation. 00:57:24.87\00:57:28.74
