Hello, friend. I'm John Carter. 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.03 Welcome today to the Carter Report. 00:00:03.06\00:00:05.43 We're talking today about Freedom of the Press 00:00:05.47\00:00:08.14 and Freedom of Religion. 00:00:08.17\00:00:10.51 My special guest is the champion of Americanism 00:00:10.54\00:00:14.84 and freedom, 00:00:14.88\00:00:16.28 Attorney Alan Reinach. 00:00:16.31\00:00:18.71 Welcome today to the Carter Report. 00:00:18.75\00:00:20.58 I'm John Carter in Moscow. 00:00:24.75\00:00:27.22 In Havana, Cuba. 00:00:27.26\00:00:29.86 Now in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. 00:00:29.89\00:00:33.13 I'm John Carter in Petra. 00:00:33.16\00:00:36.13 Right here in Communist China. 00:00:36.16\00:00:39.13 Reporting from India. 00:00:39.17\00:00:41.17 Hi, I'm John Carter in the Solomon Islands. 00:00:41.20\00:00:44.11 I'm John Carter in Soweto. 00:00:44.14\00:00:46.57 From El Salvador. 00:00:46.61\00:00:48.98 I'm John Carter in Sydney, Australia. 00:00:49.01\00:00:52.15 Pastor Carter explores "Freedom of Religion 00:00:52.18\00:00:54.82 and Freedom of the Press." 00:00:54.85\00:00:56.18 Welcome today to the Carter Report. 00:00:59.32\00:01:00.92 We're talking today about Freedom of Religion 00:01:00.96\00:01:03.49 and Freedom of the Press. 00:01:03.53\00:01:05.73 Should America become a theocracy? 00:01:05.76\00:01:09.13 Alan, tell me about the First Amendment? 00:01:09.16\00:01:10.87 You know, I was brought up in Australia, 00:01:10.90\00:01:12.37 so I don't know much about these things. 00:01:12.40\00:01:13.94 So you're an expert on this. 00:01:13.97\00:01:16.00 Tell me about the First Amendment? 00:01:16.04\00:01:18.01 Well, that's a rather broad question, John. 00:01:18.04\00:01:20.51 Yeah. 00:01:20.54\00:01:21.88 But I daresay most Americans today, 00:01:21.91\00:01:23.48 at least our kids can name more members 00:01:23.51\00:01:26.08 of The Simpsons television family 00:01:26.11\00:01:29.15 than they can the freedoms 00:01:29.18\00:01:30.52 that we have preserve in our First Amendment. 00:01:30.55\00:01:32.45 I use it slightly cynical. 00:01:32.49\00:01:35.39 No, I'm not cynical at all. 00:01:35.42\00:01:37.66 This is just reality. 00:01:37.69\00:01:39.03 So you're been, you're been factual. 00:01:39.06\00:01:40.40 And I daresay, I challenge our listeners, 00:01:40.43\00:01:42.60 how many First Amendment freedoms do you recall? 00:01:42.63\00:01:45.60 Well, that's why I'm asking you because, 00:01:45.63\00:01:47.74 you know, I was brought up in Australia. 00:01:47.77\00:01:49.30 I'm not skilled in these things like you are. 00:01:49.34\00:01:52.77 Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Religion. 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.21 So Freedom of Religion, we have two separate clauses, 00:01:55.24\00:01:58.21 no establishment of religion and free exercise. 00:01:58.25\00:02:00.58 Oh, don't go so fast. 00:02:00.62\00:02:02.08 What does that mean, no establishment of religion? 00:02:02.12\00:02:04.35 Okay. 00:02:04.39\00:02:05.72 Well, this is terminology that is foreign to us today. 00:02:05.75\00:02:10.46 When I was a kid, 00:02:10.49\00:02:12.16 there were some big words that we used to like to say, 00:02:12.19\00:02:14.96 you know, one of them was antidisestablishmentarianism. 00:02:15.00\00:02:18.80 Oh, goodness. 00:02:18.83\00:02:20.17 Now, nobody had any idea what it meant? 00:02:20.20\00:02:22.00 I didn't know until I got to college. 00:02:22.04\00:02:23.37 Did you understand? 00:02:23.41\00:02:24.74 No, I had no idea what it meant. 00:02:24.77\00:02:26.11 Do you understand it now? I do. 00:02:26.14\00:02:28.44 Because, you know, in colonial days, 00:02:28.48\00:02:31.18 it was a big movement to disestablish the church 00:02:31.21\00:02:35.65 because the churches were all established 00:02:35.68\00:02:38.49 in the sense that they were financed 00:02:38.52\00:02:41.46 and supported officially by law, by the government. 00:02:41.49\00:02:45.16 That's a bad idea. 00:02:45.19\00:02:46.63 Well, it is a bad idea. Yeah. 00:02:46.66\00:02:50.27 It's un-American now, isn't it? 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.20 The American way is to completely 00:02:52.23\00:02:54.54 disestablish the church 00:02:54.57\00:02:56.40 to have an independent religious sector 00:02:56.44\00:02:58.84 from the government sector. 00:02:58.87\00:03:01.54 So we have a healthy separation of church and state. 00:03:01.58\00:03:06.05 Should religion be kept out of government altogether? 00:03:06.08\00:03:09.38 No. 00:03:09.42\00:03:11.12 Don't you have a chaplain in the Senate, 00:03:11.15\00:03:13.19 in the Congress, and all this stuff? 00:03:13.22\00:03:14.89 So, you know, 00:03:14.92\00:03:16.42 our practices have not always been entirely consistent 00:03:16.46\00:03:20.66 with the theory of a complete disestablishment. 00:03:20.70\00:03:24.27 So yes, and the military presents 00:03:24.30\00:03:27.47 kind of a unique conundrum 00:03:27.50\00:03:29.74 because we have military chaplains, 00:03:29.77\00:03:32.47 who are not really free to answer only 00:03:32.51\00:03:35.71 to their own conscience and faith 00:03:35.74\00:03:38.41 because they're officers of the military, 00:03:38.45\00:03:40.42 they have to serve the government. 00:03:40.45\00:03:42.38 So it's, you know, 00:03:42.42\00:03:43.99 they're free to minister 00:03:44.02\00:03:45.35 to the spiritual needs of the soldiers. 00:03:45.39\00:03:49.89 But they're not free to advocate, for example, 00:03:49.92\00:03:53.60 a pacifist view of not taking up arms 00:03:53.63\00:03:56.63 and killing people, 00:03:56.67\00:03:58.00 they can't really preach too hard on "Thou shalt not kill." 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.47 No. 00:04:01.50\00:04:02.84 You know, so they're, you know, 00:04:02.87\00:04:04.21 they're in an interesting situation. 00:04:04.24\00:04:05.87 Only in America. 00:04:05.91\00:04:07.34 Now what about Freedom of the Press? 00:04:07.38\00:04:09.74 Do you think Freedom of the Press today 00:04:09.78\00:04:11.85 could be something serious? 00:04:11.88\00:04:16.25 Do you think it could be a serious challenge to it? 00:04:16.28\00:04:18.65 There are enormous threats to Freedom of the Press 00:04:18.69\00:04:21.52 because the press is so consistently mocked 00:04:21.56\00:04:24.56 and vilified. 00:04:24.59\00:04:25.93 So the mainstream, look, the mainstream needed... 00:04:25.96\00:04:27.30 Does it deserve it? 00:04:27.33\00:04:29.23 No, it absolutely doesn't. 00:04:29.26\00:04:31.27 It doesn't? No. 00:04:31.30\00:04:32.63 I think it does sometimes? 00:04:32.67\00:04:34.00 Well, the press obviously gets things wrong sometimes. 00:04:34.04\00:04:37.61 Yeah. Of course, they do. 00:04:37.64\00:04:38.97 They're human. Yeah. 00:04:39.01\00:04:40.34 You know, they try and... 00:04:40.38\00:04:42.34 Are they sometimes maliciously so? 00:04:42.38\00:04:45.95 Look, what I am seeing these days in social media 00:04:45.98\00:04:49.85 are that people are simply so propagandized, 00:04:49.88\00:04:54.76 that they dismiss anything the mainstream press 00:04:54.79\00:04:58.26 has to say simply 00:04:58.29\00:04:59.69 because of who the messenger is. 00:04:59.73\00:05:01.83 So it doesn't matter how factual CNN, 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.83 or NBC, or anybody else took parting 00:05:04.87\00:05:07.80 or the New York Times. 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.37 Did you say Fox? 00:05:09.40\00:05:10.74 Well, no, they believe everything that Fox reports, 00:05:10.77\00:05:14.18 you know. 00:05:14.21\00:05:15.54 What side are we talking about here today? 00:05:15.58\00:05:16.91 We have government apply, help apply for Rupert Murdoch. 00:05:16.95\00:05:19.71 Rupert Murdoch owns Fox, and he has... 00:05:19.75\00:05:24.79 Look, he is the one behind Brexit. 00:05:24.82\00:05:26.92 But he's a great Australian. 00:05:26.96\00:05:28.62 Did you know that? 00:05:28.66\00:05:29.99 Did you know that? I'm asking you this. 00:05:30.03\00:05:31.36 I knew he was Australian, 00:05:31.39\00:05:32.73 whether you want to say he's great or not, 00:05:32.76\00:05:34.93 is open to question, but he is very powerful. 00:05:34.96\00:05:39.10 Some people say he's at least the second most powerful man 00:05:39.13\00:05:45.41 in America. 00:05:45.44\00:05:46.94 Yeah, that's... 00:05:46.98\00:05:48.51 They say, he calls to president every day. 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.75 I don't know about a personal relationship... 00:05:50.78\00:05:52.85 Yeah, they talk about cricket, and football, and those things, 00:05:52.88\00:05:55.28 that's what they talk about, I'm sure. 00:05:55.32\00:05:56.89 Look, Fox News has become, in essence, 00:05:56.92\00:06:00.19 the official press organ of the American government, 00:06:00.22\00:06:05.23 of the White House, 00:06:05.26\00:06:06.59 their relationship is so cozy. 00:06:06.63\00:06:09.23 It's kind of like what, 00:06:09.26\00:06:10.90 you know, the Soviet media was during the Soviet Union era. 00:06:10.93\00:06:13.74 Oh, not as bad as that. 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.80 Pretty much the same. 00:06:15.84\00:06:17.77 You know, the Soviet era was a totalitarian system. 00:06:17.81\00:06:21.78 And even though the American system 00:06:21.81\00:06:23.41 may have to the casual viewer, 00:06:23.45\00:06:26.61 one or two slight blemishes, 00:06:26.65\00:06:28.88 it's not nearly as bad as the old Soviet Union, is it? 00:06:28.92\00:06:31.89 Okay. 00:06:31.92\00:06:33.25 But just see the difference here is that 00:06:33.29\00:06:34.96 we do have other media besides Fox. 00:06:34.99\00:06:38.09 Yes, we do. 00:06:38.13\00:06:39.46 Okay, so the comparison between Fox and the Soviet era, 00:06:39.49\00:06:43.77 I think is apropos. 00:06:43.80\00:06:45.63 The fact is, we have left wing media 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.90 and we have mainstream media as well. 00:06:47.94\00:06:50.27 Before I dig a hole too deep, 00:06:50.31\00:06:52.07 let me go to another question here. 00:06:52.11\00:06:53.78 Revelation 13 talks about a coming time of persecution? 00:06:56.95\00:07:03.15 Yes, it does. 00:07:03.18\00:07:04.72 Now, if you don't mind, 00:07:04.75\00:07:06.25 I'm going to read you the text in Revelation 13, 14, and 15. 00:07:06.29\00:07:12.23 And I hope my viewing audience is enjoying the program today. 00:07:12.26\00:07:17.90 And if you've just joined us, this is the Carter Report 00:07:17.93\00:07:20.80 and my guest is great defender of freedom, Alan Reinach. 00:07:20.84\00:07:25.87 Here we go, Alan. 00:07:25.91\00:07:27.24 Let me see if I can get you this text, 00:07:27.28\00:07:28.61 Revelation 13, 14, and 15, 00:07:28.64\00:07:30.68 "And he deceives those who dwell on the earth 00:07:30.71\00:07:33.28 by those signs 00:07:33.31\00:07:35.22 which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast." 00:07:35.25\00:07:39.35 Now, the beast, most people say is the antichrist 00:07:39.39\00:07:43.79 or something like that. 00:07:43.83\00:07:45.63 "Telling those who dwell on the earth 00:07:45.66\00:07:47.63 to make an image to the beast 00:07:47.66\00:07:51.20 who was wounded by the sword and lived. 00:07:51.23\00:07:53.67 He was granted power to give breath 00:07:53.70\00:07:55.84 to the image of the beast, 00:07:55.87\00:07:57.71 that the image of the beast should both speak 00:07:57.74\00:07:59.91 and cause as many as would not worship 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.58 the image of the beast to be killed." 00:08:02.61\00:08:04.45 Now, 00:08:04.48\00:08:07.22 many, many theologians have seen the beast 00:08:07.25\00:08:10.12 as the union of church and state. 00:08:10.15\00:08:12.95 Well, the historic Protestant view is that the beast 00:08:12.99\00:08:17.29 that was wounded by the sword and yet lived 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.13 was the Roman Catholic Church. 00:08:20.16\00:08:22.96 That's the Protestant view. 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.33 And we're not talking today about anybody living today 00:08:24.37\00:08:27.57 right now but... 00:08:27.60\00:08:28.94 Correct. 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.31 But the beast power, they said, was the coalition of church 00:08:30.34\00:08:33.94 and state in the Dark Ages... 00:08:33.98\00:08:35.31 Correct. 00:08:35.34\00:08:36.68 Which persecuted millions of people. 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.28 It did. Yeah. 00:08:38.31\00:08:39.75 Many believe and I believe 00:08:39.78\00:08:41.35 that the image of the beast is the copy of that system 00:08:41.38\00:08:44.02 that existed in the Dark Ages, 00:08:44.05\00:08:46.15 where you have a theocracy today. 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.32 So what it's describing is really a revival 00:08:48.36\00:08:51.69 of something like the Inquisition, 00:08:51.73\00:08:54.60 which was the instrument of persecution 00:08:54.63\00:08:57.77 of religious dissenters. 00:08:57.80\00:09:00.30 Do you think everybody knows about the Inquisition? 00:09:00.34\00:09:03.04 Do you know about the Inquisition, my friend, 00:09:03.07\00:09:04.67 watching the Carter Report? 00:09:04.71\00:09:06.04 What's the Inquisition? 00:09:06.07\00:09:07.41 I hope so. Well... 00:09:07.44\00:09:09.04 Not by personal experience, I hope, Alan. 00:09:09.08\00:09:10.78 No, no, no, no. 00:09:10.81\00:09:12.15 But the Inquisition 00:09:12.18\00:09:14.55 was an instrument of the church 00:09:14.58\00:09:16.48 during the Dark Ages to essentially 00:09:16.52\00:09:20.69 try to convert heretics by force. 00:09:20.72\00:09:23.02 Yes. 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.39 The theory was that 00:09:24.43\00:09:25.89 it was okay to destroy the body 00:09:25.93\00:09:27.76 in the hopes of saving the soul. 00:09:27.80\00:09:29.86 And there were instruments of torture used 00:09:29.90\00:09:32.87 to try to coerce people to faith in the church. 00:09:32.90\00:09:38.77 You and I may have possibly been victims 00:09:38.81\00:09:41.71 of the Inquisition. 00:09:41.74\00:09:43.08 Alan, if we lived 500 years ago? 00:09:43.11\00:09:45.78 Well, you know, I'm not likely to conform 00:09:45.81\00:09:48.75 to any majority if you're... 00:09:48.78\00:09:50.12 I've noticed this. 00:09:50.15\00:09:51.49 You are a very strong willed young man. 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.79 Young, I like the sound of that. 00:09:53.82\00:09:55.26 Yes, yes. 00:09:55.29\00:09:56.62 We're trying to give compliments out here today, 00:09:56.66\00:09:58.23 if anybody calls me a young man, I kiss him. 00:09:58.26\00:10:00.66 Now... 00:10:00.70\00:10:02.03 I'll be sure not to do so, John. 00:10:02.06\00:10:03.87 Do you see unsettling events happening in the world today 00:10:03.90\00:10:09.07 that could bring about this 00:10:09.10\00:10:11.27 diabolical religious union of church and state? 00:10:11.31\00:10:15.38 Well, of course. 00:10:15.41\00:10:16.75 And, you know, as I've said... Of course. 00:10:16.78\00:10:18.85 Look, the greatest threats to religious freedom 00:10:18.88\00:10:22.52 are fundamentalism and nationalism. 00:10:22.55\00:10:25.25 And you have both of those impulses raging 00:10:25.29\00:10:29.46 in the United States today. 00:10:29.49\00:10:31.39 Both fundamentalism and nationalism. 00:10:31.43\00:10:33.73 Do you think you do or is this you... 00:10:33.76\00:10:37.47 Pardon my saying because 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.80 you're a distinguished attorney, 00:10:40.84\00:10:42.47 and you know more about religious liberty 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.87 than just about anybody I want, more than anybody I know. 00:10:44.91\00:10:48.61 And I watch a bit of television, 00:10:48.64\00:10:50.05 I don't see anybody who knows as much as you do on this. 00:10:50.08\00:10:53.48 Do you really think 00:10:53.52\00:10:54.85 we have a flourishing of fundamentalism, 00:10:54.88\00:10:58.09 right-wing religion? 00:10:58.12\00:10:59.69 Yes, we certainly do. 00:10:59.72\00:11:01.82 It's not the fundamentalism of a century ago 00:11:01.86\00:11:07.50 which was much more orthodox, 00:11:07.53\00:11:11.10 if I can use that terminology in its theology, 00:11:11.13\00:11:14.70 because today's brand of religious enthusiasm 00:11:14.74\00:11:19.91 is littered with heresy. 00:11:19.94\00:11:22.94 And ignorance. Yes, it is. 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.68 This is true, ignorance. 00:11:24.71\00:11:26.05 Yes. Yeah. 00:11:26.08\00:11:27.42 You know, for example. 00:11:27.45\00:11:28.78 The less you know, the louder you shout. 00:11:28.82\00:11:30.15 We had an economic collapse in this country a decade ago. 00:11:30.19\00:11:32.99 Yes. 00:11:33.02\00:11:34.36 And a lot of fingers were pointed at greed 00:11:34.39\00:11:36.12 on Wall Street and appropriately so. 00:11:36.16\00:11:38.46 Yes, appropriately so. Absolutely. 00:11:38.49\00:11:40.73 But what we missed was the fact that, 00:11:40.76\00:11:42.76 you know, somebody was taking out these ridiculous mortgages 00:11:42.80\00:11:47.10 that led to the packaging of mortgages 00:11:47.14\00:11:51.17 and the collapse of the economy. 00:11:51.21\00:11:52.97 And they were egged on by preachers 00:11:53.01\00:11:55.84 in mega churches around the country... 00:11:55.88\00:11:57.98 Astounding. 00:11:58.01\00:11:59.35 Teaching people that 00:11:59.38\00:12:01.05 it was God's will for them to be rich. 00:12:01.08\00:12:03.65 And if they only had faith, 00:12:03.69\00:12:05.32 they would have bigger houses and nicer cars... 00:12:05.35\00:12:08.12 The prosperity gospel. 00:12:08.16\00:12:09.56 Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. 00:12:09.59\00:12:11.83 Right. 00:12:11.86\00:12:13.19 Which, you know, sounds great 00:12:13.23\00:12:14.56 except that the flip side of it is if you're struggling, 00:12:14.60\00:12:18.40 if you're sick, if you have cancer, 00:12:18.43\00:12:21.57 it's because God's not blessing you 00:12:21.60\00:12:24.47 and your eternal destiny is at risk. 00:12:24.51\00:12:28.18 The prosperity gospel is the very opposite 00:12:28.21\00:12:31.11 of the true Gospel of Christ. 00:12:31.15\00:12:33.05 Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit." 00:12:33.08\00:12:34.95 Yes. 00:12:34.98\00:12:36.32 He didn't say, blessed are the wealthy. 00:12:36.35\00:12:38.59 Let me move on to this. 00:12:38.62\00:12:40.69 And so you do see thunder clouds, 00:12:40.72\00:12:44.96 you do hear the flashes of, 00:12:44.99\00:12:48.13 you see the flashes of the lightning. 00:12:48.16\00:12:49.90 Religious intolerance is dominant 00:12:49.93\00:12:53.34 throughout both the Western world 00:12:53.37\00:12:55.40 and the rest of the world. 00:12:55.44\00:12:56.77 And it's getting worse, isn't it? 00:12:56.81\00:12:58.14 It is getting worse. 00:12:58.17\00:12:59.51 You know, everyone recognizes how polarized our nation is. 00:12:59.54\00:13:02.34 And we see this in all these terrible killings, 00:13:02.38\00:13:05.21 these killings in synagogues, and mosques, 00:13:05.25\00:13:08.98 and even churches. 00:13:09.02\00:13:10.39 But, you know, to be fair, John, 00:13:10.42\00:13:11.79 it's often been said that the Pharisees and Sadducees 00:13:11.82\00:13:15.22 representing the right and the left of their day 00:13:15.26\00:13:18.53 agreed on little else 00:13:18.56\00:13:19.93 than the necessity of crucifying Christ. 00:13:19.96\00:13:21.76 Yes. 00:13:21.80\00:13:23.13 Well, the same is likely to be repeated 00:13:23.16\00:13:25.57 in the prophecy that you read, 00:13:25.60\00:13:27.57 where the religious intolerance 00:13:27.60\00:13:29.17 that forms an image of the beast 00:13:29.20\00:13:30.87 and causes all who do not worship 00:13:30.91\00:13:33.27 the beast to be killed, 00:13:33.31\00:13:34.74 is likely to be endorsed 00:13:34.78\00:13:36.85 by both the right and the left. 00:13:36.88\00:13:38.98 It is my conviction 00:13:39.01\00:13:40.58 as an old pastor and preacher of the gospel 00:13:40.62\00:13:43.42 for almost 60 years 00:13:43.45\00:13:46.76 that the greatest threat to freedom 00:13:46.79\00:13:48.52 is old fashioned ignorance. 00:13:48.56\00:13:51.99 As somebody said, 00:13:52.03\00:13:53.40 "Don't impute malice, 00:13:53.43\00:13:55.76 when old fashioned stupidity will do." 00:13:55.80\00:13:58.73 And a lot of folks 00:13:58.77\00:14:00.10 just don't have any idea of history 00:14:00.14\00:14:02.50 or of Bible prophecy. 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.74 They don't know what's going on. 00:14:04.77\00:14:06.41 Now, we're not saying, 00:14:06.44\00:14:08.41 we're not suggesting there's a parallel 00:14:08.44\00:14:10.38 between what happened in Nazi Germany 00:14:10.41\00:14:13.48 and anything that's happening today in the world. 00:14:13.52\00:14:18.45 But you are a Jewish brother from New York City? 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.96 I am. 00:14:21.99\00:14:23.39 And you happen to believe in Jesus? 00:14:23.43\00:14:25.76 Yes, I do. Yes. 00:14:25.79\00:14:27.30 What happened in Germany during the 1930s, 00:14:27.33\00:14:32.57 and then the 1940s 00:14:32.60\00:14:34.07 with the rise of the Third Reich? 00:14:34.10\00:14:37.01 What happened to the Jewish people? 00:14:37.04\00:14:38.97 Well, they were sent to camps and gassed by the millions. 00:14:39.01\00:14:42.94 How many? 00:14:42.98\00:14:44.31 Six million. Six million. 00:14:44.35\00:14:46.01 Some people deny that today. 00:14:46.05\00:14:48.12 You know, when you go to the Holocaust Museum 00:14:48.15\00:14:51.49 in Washington, DC. 00:14:51.52\00:14:53.62 One of the exhibits there, 00:14:53.66\00:14:56.93 that really was so emotionally moving for me 00:14:56.96\00:15:02.60 was to see hair. 00:15:02.63\00:15:05.23 Dreadful. 00:15:05.27\00:15:06.60 Human hair that was bundled into bales, 00:15:06.63\00:15:11.24 like bales of hay 00:15:11.27\00:15:13.11 and used for commercial purposes. 00:15:13.14\00:15:15.88 They were harvesting hair... 00:15:15.91\00:15:18.51 Can you believe it? For commerce. 00:15:18.55\00:15:20.32 Yeah. Can you believe it? 00:15:20.35\00:15:22.12 And this is what human beings. 00:15:22.15\00:15:25.55 This is how inhumane they had become 00:15:25.59\00:15:29.72 in their conduct to regard... 00:15:29.76\00:15:31.09 Why did Hitler become so popular though? 00:15:31.13\00:15:33.76 You know, there are lessons for today 00:15:33.80\00:15:37.53 because we have the growing rise of intolerance 00:15:37.57\00:15:42.70 around the world. 00:15:42.74\00:15:44.07 And there's a certain sort of sequence 00:15:44.11\00:15:48.88 that we witnessed in Germany, 00:15:48.91\00:15:50.81 it didn't start with the camps and with the gas chambers. 00:15:50.85\00:15:55.58 It started with demonizing and scapegoating Jews 00:15:55.62\00:15:59.82 for the economic troubles and the social troubles. 00:15:59.85\00:16:03.59 You know, Germany in the 20s was, 00:16:03.63\00:16:06.59 you know, Berlin was a place of great decadence. 00:16:06.63\00:16:09.33 Yes, it was. It was the Jazz era. 00:16:09.36\00:16:11.63 And, you know, homosexuality was very public in Berlin. 00:16:11.67\00:16:16.00 And so Hitler... 00:16:16.04\00:16:17.77 And we're not against homosexuals. 00:16:17.81\00:16:19.47 Jesus died to save everybody. Absolutely. Yes, He did. 00:16:19.51\00:16:22.24 So let's just be clear on this, 00:16:22.28\00:16:24.11 regardless of what we believe about, 00:16:24.15\00:16:27.98 you know, what is proper sexual conduct? 00:16:28.02\00:16:31.49 Jesus died to save every human being, 00:16:31.52\00:16:34.56 that's the gospel, right? 00:16:34.59\00:16:36.62 So the sequence began with scapegoating the Jews 00:16:36.66\00:16:42.16 and blaming them for the immorality, 00:16:42.20\00:16:45.23 and the decadence, 00:16:45.27\00:16:46.70 and the economic and social troubles of the nation. 00:16:46.74\00:16:50.71 And today, 00:16:50.74\00:16:52.27 we see a lot of demonizing of immigrants 00:16:52.31\00:16:55.34 and Muslims in America. 00:16:55.38\00:16:57.81 Well, scapegoating and demonizing has led 00:16:57.85\00:17:00.55 to attacks here and there, 00:17:00.58\00:17:03.72 such as in Christ church, New Zealand. 00:17:03.75\00:17:05.75 Yes, outrageous, it's terrible. 00:17:05.79\00:17:08.16 If it keeps going, 00:17:08.19\00:17:11.13 the sequence becomes violence 00:17:11.16\00:17:13.90 and increasing violence 00:17:13.93\00:17:15.56 and even organized violence. 00:17:15.60\00:17:17.33 And what about hate speech? 00:17:17.37\00:17:18.70 Is there more hate speech today? 00:17:18.73\00:17:21.04 Hate speech is definitely a problem. 00:17:21.07\00:17:23.17 But remember, we protect speech in this country, 00:17:23.20\00:17:26.14 we don't punish people 00:17:26.17\00:17:27.78 for expressing hateful thoughts. 00:17:27.81\00:17:30.45 It may be protected, but it's not right, is it? 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.65 No, it's... 00:17:32.68\00:17:34.02 Well, there's a difference between what's legal 00:17:34.05\00:17:35.38 and what's moral. 00:17:35.42\00:17:36.75 Of course. 00:17:36.79\00:17:38.12 Now back in the days of Germany, 00:17:38.15\00:17:41.72 when the Jews were being persecuted, 00:17:41.76\00:17:44.73 and other minority groups were being persecuted. 00:17:44.76\00:17:49.00 Of course, all the Christians 00:17:49.03\00:17:50.90 ran to the side of the Jews, didn't they? 00:17:50.93\00:17:53.00 All the Christians turned against Hitler, 00:17:53.03\00:17:56.40 and they opposed him. 00:17:56.44\00:17:57.81 You know, that would be a very nice 00:17:57.84\00:18:00.11 alternative view of history. 00:18:00.14\00:18:01.94 There was a TV show that had a version of, 00:18:01.98\00:18:05.95 you know, the outcome of the war 00:18:05.98\00:18:07.32 where Germany won and conquered America. 00:18:07.35\00:18:09.48 That was very, very interesting show, 00:18:09.52\00:18:12.75 but no, 80% of Lutherans in Germany 00:18:12.79\00:18:17.19 supported the Nazi regime. 00:18:17.23\00:18:19.39 I'm told and your figures would probably be 00:18:19.43\00:18:22.26 more accurate than mine. 00:18:22.30\00:18:23.63 But I'm told that in Germany 00:18:23.67\00:18:27.64 95% of the people supported Hitler, 00:18:27.67\00:18:31.17 95% went along with Hitler, 00:18:31.21\00:18:33.14 only a very tiny minority opposed Hitler. 00:18:33.17\00:18:36.88 I don't know the percentages, 00:18:36.91\00:18:38.68 but the vast majority of Roman Catholics, 00:18:38.71\00:18:41.68 and Lutherans, 00:18:41.72\00:18:43.18 and other Protestants shouted Sieg Heil 00:18:43.22\00:18:46.82 and turned against the Jews. 00:18:46.86\00:18:48.52 This is true. 00:18:48.56\00:18:49.89 The majority of the Lutherans 00:18:49.92\00:18:51.43 who were professed believers in the Gospel of Christ. 00:18:51.46\00:18:56.63 Why did they do this? 00:18:56.67\00:18:58.40 Why would people do this? 00:18:58.43\00:19:01.34 Hitler promised to make Germany great again. 00:19:01.37\00:19:06.54 They had gone through a time of hyperinflation, 00:19:06.57\00:19:10.11 and terrible ills. 00:19:10.15\00:19:12.58 They suffered a huge blow 00:19:12.61\00:19:16.08 to the national pride by losing the World War I. 00:19:16.12\00:19:19.39 Terrible things happen to them. 00:19:19.42\00:19:20.99 And so the promise to make Germany great again, 00:19:21.02\00:19:24.19 to deal with the decadence 00:19:24.23\00:19:27.80 and restore Germany's greatness 00:19:27.83\00:19:30.87 that had considerable appeal. 00:19:30.90\00:19:33.23 Alan, what is scary to me is this. 00:19:33.27\00:19:36.07 That here you had the most educated people 00:19:36.10\00:19:38.57 probably on the face of the earth. 00:19:38.61\00:19:40.41 They gave us the great theologians 00:19:40.44\00:19:42.74 and the great philosophers. 00:19:42.78\00:19:44.41 Theologians helped us, 00:19:44.45\00:19:45.78 the philosophers didn't help the world. 00:19:45.81\00:19:48.05 But Germany had great music, 00:19:48.08\00:19:50.65 great school, great medicine... 00:19:50.69\00:19:54.52 A great Christian civilization. 00:19:54.56\00:19:56.99 Probably, 00:19:57.03\00:19:59.66 if you leave Great Britain out of it, 00:19:59.69\00:20:03.33 at least in Europe, 00:20:03.37\00:20:04.70 the two greatest powers were Britain and Germany. 00:20:04.73\00:20:08.27 Okay. 00:20:08.30\00:20:09.64 And some would say that Germany was ahead 00:20:09.67\00:20:11.24 with the philosophers and all the rest of it. 00:20:11.27\00:20:15.61 So you have all these people who are intensely educated, 00:20:15.64\00:20:19.98 they're smart people, 00:20:20.02\00:20:23.22 they're cultured people. 00:20:23.25\00:20:27.32 And they committed the crime of the millennium, 00:20:27.36\00:20:31.99 you know, the century of our millennium. 00:20:32.03\00:20:35.43 And they marched teams in step and they shouted Sieg Heil, 00:20:35.46\00:20:39.53 and they gave the disgusting salute. 00:20:39.57\00:20:42.47 And they turn their backs and they left 6 million Jews 00:20:42.50\00:20:46.74 go to the gas chambers in worst places. 00:20:46.78\00:20:49.64 Well, they didn't just let, they... 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.58 They did it. They did it. 00:20:51.61\00:20:52.95 They did it. Yeah. Yeah. 00:20:52.98\00:20:55.32 And I would suggest to the people 00:20:55.35\00:20:56.89 who are watching this program, 00:20:56.92\00:20:58.39 that one of the biggest problems 00:20:58.42\00:21:00.29 was their ignorance. 00:21:00.32\00:21:03.73 They seem to be ignorant on what they were doing even. 00:21:03.76\00:21:08.90 And so I think that ignorance is one of the greatest blights 00:21:08.93\00:21:13.00 in the world. 00:21:13.03\00:21:14.37 And I think we have 00:21:14.40\00:21:15.74 a tremendous amount of ignorance today 00:21:15.77\00:21:19.81 in the Western world, including America, 00:21:19.84\00:21:22.21 as far as liberty and freedom, 00:21:22.24\00:21:24.48 and all these things are concerned. 00:21:24.51\00:21:26.41 The intolerance that was displayed 00:21:26.45\00:21:29.48 in Germany certainly 00:21:29.52\00:21:30.85 can be chalked up to a nationalistic fervor. 00:21:30.89\00:21:35.26 Yes, nationalism. 00:21:35.29\00:21:36.76 And nationalism is certainly a very powerful force 00:21:36.79\00:21:40.93 in America today. 00:21:40.96\00:21:42.30 They sang a hymn, 00:21:42.33\00:21:44.00 they sang the national anthem, 00:21:44.03\00:21:45.47 which was set to the tune of a hymn, 00:21:45.50\00:21:48.10 it were Germany overall. 00:21:48.14\00:21:51.11 Let me ask you this. 00:21:51.14\00:21:54.44 Your answers, of course, are completely accurate. 00:21:54.48\00:21:57.61 And they're right, what you're saying is right. 00:21:57.65\00:22:00.12 And people say, I don't like hearing this, 00:22:00.15\00:22:02.42 well, then they need to think through their, 00:22:02.45\00:22:04.82 their thought processes, 00:22:04.85\00:22:06.92 and say, am I prepared to follow the truth 00:22:06.96\00:22:10.36 that Jesus said, you'll know the truth, 00:22:10.39\00:22:12.26 and the truth will make you free. 00:22:12.29\00:22:13.93 So we need to put aside our preconceived ideas, 00:22:13.96\00:22:16.77 and by the grace of God, believe in the truth. 00:22:16.80\00:22:20.87 This is a tough one. 00:22:20.90\00:22:22.24 I think the left wing movement, 00:22:22.27\00:22:24.41 the extreme left wing movement in America, 00:22:24.44\00:22:29.24 I was going to say was a curse. 00:22:29.28\00:22:30.68 And I don't think it's too strong. 00:22:30.71\00:22:34.05 Intolerance, 00:22:34.08\00:22:35.62 throwing out American values, 00:22:35.65\00:22:37.99 throwing out Christian values, 00:22:38.02\00:22:40.39 persecuting those that think differently to them. 00:22:40.42\00:22:45.69 But the right-wing, it seems to this pilgrim, 00:22:45.73\00:22:49.60 the extreme right-wing in America 00:22:49.63\00:22:52.17 is just as bad as the extreme left-wing. 00:22:52.20\00:22:57.01 And my question is this. 00:22:57.04\00:22:58.54 Are right-wing Christians today 00:22:58.57\00:23:02.41 the betraying the Gospel of Christ, 00:23:02.44\00:23:05.71 have they lost their spiritual authority, 00:23:05.75\00:23:08.85 because of their involvement, their immersion in politics? 00:23:08.88\00:23:13.52 Let me answer that question with a reference to Jesus 00:23:13.56\00:23:17.66 final discussion with the disciples 00:23:17.69\00:23:20.43 before His ascension to heaven. 00:23:20.46\00:23:23.23 They asked Him, 00:23:23.26\00:23:24.77 "Lord, is it this time 00:23:24.80\00:23:26.94 that You will establish the kingdom?" 00:23:26.97\00:23:29.80 And Jesus understood that 00:23:29.84\00:23:31.17 what they were really asking was, 00:23:31.21\00:23:32.94 hey, do I get to sit on your right hand 00:23:32.97\00:23:34.64 and your left hand now? 00:23:34.68\00:23:36.08 And, you know, we're just dying for power. 00:23:36.11\00:23:39.65 And Jesus said, 00:23:39.68\00:23:42.18 "The authority to rule belongs to the Father. 00:23:42.22\00:23:46.49 That's not for you." Yeah. 00:23:46.52\00:23:48.89 He said, "But you will receive a different kind of power, 00:23:48.92\00:23:52.19 said you will receive power 00:23:52.23\00:23:53.83 when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. 00:23:53.86\00:23:56.00 And you'll be my witnesses in Judea, Samaria, 00:23:56.03\00:23:58.17 and to the uttermost parts the world." 00:23:58.20\00:24:00.14 The problem that we have 00:24:00.17\00:24:01.50 in the American church today, John, 00:24:01.54\00:24:03.37 is that there is the pursuit of political power, 00:24:03.41\00:24:07.34 in the Greek it's the exousia 00:24:07.38\00:24:09.78 and the forsaking of the dunamis, 00:24:09.81\00:24:12.21 the dynamite power of the Holy Spirit. 00:24:12.25\00:24:14.58 Which is the setting up of the image of the beast? 00:24:14.62\00:24:16.85 Right. 00:24:16.89\00:24:18.22 The church is not to pursue spiritual goals 00:24:18.25\00:24:22.02 through seeking political power. 00:24:22.06\00:24:23.93 That's a formula for persecution. 00:24:23.96\00:24:26.09 It cannot end well. 00:24:26.13\00:24:27.90 But we've got very, very bad memories. 00:24:27.93\00:24:30.80 And we don't remember the Dark Ages 00:24:30.83\00:24:32.93 or any of those things. 00:24:32.97\00:24:34.97 It is my personal belief 00:24:35.00\00:24:37.81 that a minister of the gospel needs to stay out of politics 00:24:37.84\00:24:40.91 and preach the Gospel of Christ. 00:24:40.94\00:24:44.35 Countries are turned upwards 00:24:44.38\00:24:47.12 when they're turned towards God. 00:24:47.15\00:24:50.89 We don't accomplish a great deal 00:24:50.92\00:24:53.42 by trying to enforce morality 00:24:53.46\00:24:56.46 through laws and legislation. 00:24:56.49\00:24:59.39 Let me ask you this 00:24:59.43\00:25:00.76 because we're coming to a close of this program. 00:25:00.80\00:25:03.77 And I am glad that you've joined us 00:25:03.80\00:25:05.13 and it's been a privilege for you to have with us. 00:25:05.17\00:25:08.80 If you were to have, 00:25:08.84\00:25:11.44 and you're going to have it. 00:25:11.47\00:25:12.81 If you're going to have a final word of advice 00:25:12.84\00:25:16.01 to Christians today, 00:25:16.04\00:25:17.65 what would you say to them? 00:25:17.68\00:25:19.08 I would say, 00:25:19.11\00:25:20.45 seek the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:25:20.48\00:25:23.05 not the power of government, 00:25:23.08\00:25:25.39 and learn the lesson of Jesus judgment parable 00:25:25.42\00:25:29.12 in Matthew 25, 00:25:29.16\00:25:31.23 to see in the least of these my brothers and sisters, 00:25:31.26\00:25:34.80 to see Jesus. 00:25:34.83\00:25:36.23 To learn to see Jesus instead of demonizing 00:25:36.26\00:25:39.93 and make and seeing people as enemies, 00:25:39.97\00:25:42.30 see them as Jesus. 00:25:42.34\00:25:44.24 And, of course, 00:25:44.27\00:25:45.61 that is the Christian viewpoint. 00:25:45.64\00:25:47.48 That is the biblical viewpoint. 00:25:47.51\00:25:51.25 And it's mine too. 00:25:51.28\00:25:52.61 And I thank you so much, Alan. 00:25:52.65\00:25:53.98 It's been my privilege and honor 00:25:54.02\00:25:55.35 to have you with us today at the Carter Report. 00:25:55.38\00:25:58.29 And it's been our privilege to have you join us today. 00:25:58.32\00:26:01.02 Please write to me, John Carter, P.O.
