I'm John Carter in Moscow. 00:00:02.13\00:00:04.63 In Havana, Cuba. 00:00:04.67\00:00:07.30 Now in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. 00:00:07.34\00:00:10.51 I'm John Carter in Petra. 00:00:10.54\00:00:13.51 Right here in Communist China. 00:00:13.54\00:00:16.44 Reporting from India. 00:00:16.48\00:00:18.58 Hi, I'm John Carter in the Solomon Islands. 00:00:18.61\00:00:21.52 I'm John Carter in Soweto. From El Salvador. 00:00:21.55\00:00:26.42 I'm John Carter in Sydney, Australia. 00:00:26.45\00:00:29.02 John Carter tells "Stories from Down Under, 00:00:29.06\00:00:32.06 Grace Abounding Where Least Expected." 00:00:32.09\00:00:36.30 Welcome today. 00:00:36.33\00:00:37.67 We're so glad to have you with us. 00:00:37.70\00:00:39.77 I'm going to talk today about 00:00:39.80\00:00:41.97 "Grace abounding in the most unexpected places." 00:00:42.00\00:00:48.31 Now I've just come back 00:00:48.34\00:00:49.68 from one of the most unexpected places 00:00:49.71\00:00:51.18 where you think you're going to find grace, 00:00:51.21\00:00:53.55 and that is in the land down under. 00:00:53.58\00:00:55.32 I've got some terrific stories to tell you. 00:00:55.35\00:00:58.62 Have you ever heard of the eastern brown snake? 00:00:58.65\00:01:01.79 Well, you're going to see him today, 00:01:01.82\00:01:03.29 I was gonna say we brought one along 00:01:03.32\00:01:04.66 so you can look at that. 00:01:04.69\00:01:06.83 But it's the second most dangerous snake in the world. 00:01:06.86\00:01:10.00 I'm going to show you a picture of it today. 00:01:10.03\00:01:12.10 I want you to take your Bible 00:01:12.13\00:01:13.60 and come over here to the Book of Romans, 00:01:13.64\00:01:15.40 please. 00:01:15.44\00:01:16.77 Romans, let me see where the text is, 00:01:16.81\00:01:19.24 when I get my eyes on. 00:01:19.27\00:01:20.81 Romans 5:20, 00:01:20.84\00:01:24.65 it's one of those super texts in the Bible. 00:01:24.68\00:01:28.72 Romans 5:20 says, 00:01:28.75\00:01:32.09 "Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound." 00:01:32.12\00:01:38.53 The Lord doesn't give us too much good news, 00:01:38.56\00:01:41.20 He tells us that we are offenders. 00:01:41.23\00:01:44.17 "But where sin abounded, grace," what does it say? 00:01:44.20\00:01:48.70 "Grace abounded much more." 00:01:48.74\00:01:50.51 Says in the King James Version, "Where sin did abound," 00:01:50.54\00:01:55.28 you know, the text, "grace did much more abound." 00:01:55.31\00:02:01.85 And even though things may look absolutely bad, 00:02:01.88\00:02:06.89 this is an opportunity for God's abounding grace. 00:02:06.92\00:02:13.50 In the program last week, 00:02:13.53\00:02:14.86 we talked about that great text in the Bible 00:02:14.90\00:02:17.53 where God said to His people in the Book of Deuteronomy, 00:02:17.57\00:02:21.44 "I'm going to make you the head, 00:02:21.47\00:02:23.94 I'm not going to make you the tail." 00:02:23.97\00:02:26.14 God says, "I'm going to bless you in this way, 00:02:26.17\00:02:28.81 and I'm going to bless you in that way." 00:02:28.84\00:02:31.71 And so today, we're going to talk about not just grace, 00:02:31.75\00:02:34.82 but what is it called, abounding grace, 00:02:34.85\00:02:38.65 super grace. 00:02:38.69\00:02:42.09 Now, Sydney is my hometown. 00:02:42.12\00:02:46.49 And my town, which is called Sydney, 00:02:46.53\00:02:50.00 is a secular society. 00:02:50.03\00:02:52.63 When I first came to the United States of America, 00:02:52.67\00:02:54.74 I was sort of amazed 00:02:54.77\00:02:57.24 by how religious the people were. 00:02:57.27\00:03:00.08 I went in to buy a motor car and I got a Bible study. 00:03:00.11\00:03:06.82 I thought there's no other country like this. 00:03:06.85\00:03:08.55 This is... 00:03:08.58\00:03:09.92 No, it used to be, of course. 00:03:09.95\00:03:11.95 But basically, it is a very religious country. 00:03:11.99\00:03:15.89 But Australia is not 00:03:15.92\00:03:18.76 altogether very religious. 00:03:18.79\00:03:23.43 The secular media in Australia would like to have you think 00:03:23.47\00:03:28.67 that Christianity is finished in Australia. 00:03:28.70\00:03:33.61 But as they said in that famous movie, 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.21 remember the line, "You're dreaming." 00:03:37.25\00:03:42.42 You're dreaming, 00:03:42.45\00:03:43.79 if you think Christianity is finished in Australia. 00:03:43.82\00:03:48.16 Sydney is very close to my heart. 00:03:48.19\00:03:50.73 In 1982, I had the privilege of running a campaign 00:03:50.76\00:03:54.60 that lasted for six months in the Sydney, Opera House. 00:03:54.63\00:03:59.30 Sort of just love that place. 00:03:59.33\00:04:01.17 I know inside, backside, front side. 00:04:01.20\00:04:05.24 Had tremendous crowds come to the Sydney Opera House, 00:04:05.27\00:04:08.44 in totally secular Sydney. 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.98 People want to say, this just doesn't have... 00:04:11.01\00:04:14.22 This is inside the Sydney Opera House, 00:04:14.25\00:04:16.28 this is inside the great concert hall. 00:04:16.32\00:04:21.32 Folks find this hard to believe now, 00:04:21.36\00:04:24.79 but we had the largest crowds in the history 00:04:24.83\00:04:28.76 of the Sydney Opera House, 00:04:28.80\00:04:30.57 and that record hasn't been broken. 00:04:30.60\00:04:33.23 And this is going back, 00:04:33.27\00:04:34.60 this is going back to the 1980s, 00:04:34.64\00:04:36.50 and there were people back there like, 00:04:36.54\00:04:38.14 Doubting Thomas, 00:04:38.17\00:04:39.51 they said, "It can't happen, 00:04:39.54\00:04:41.14 it won't happen, it's impossible, 00:04:41.18\00:04:43.58 the days of public evangelism." 00:04:43.61\00:04:45.68 Oh, oh, oh, please, 00:04:45.71\00:04:48.18 don't play the old tune to me 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.99 because I believe, 00:04:51.02\00:04:52.35 and you believe in abounding grace. 00:04:52.39\00:04:55.12 And this, my friend, 00:04:55.16\00:04:56.73 is in secular Sydney 00:04:56.76\00:04:59.36 where the skeptics in the church said, 00:04:59.39\00:05:02.06 "Can't happen." 00:05:02.10\00:05:04.20 The great Roman Catholic theologian, 00:05:04.23\00:05:06.94 Saint Augustine said this, 00:05:06.97\00:05:09.60 "Our souls were made for God, 00:05:09.64\00:05:13.71 and they cannot rest until they rest in Him." 00:05:13.74\00:05:17.21 There's something inside the human heart 00:05:17.25\00:05:20.75 that is empty, restless, and lonely, 00:05:20.78\00:05:26.62 and that is because of the lack of God. 00:05:26.65\00:05:30.46 And even in secular Sydney, people are hungry for God. 00:05:30.49\00:05:34.16 I want to read you a text, 00:05:34.20\00:05:35.53 I want you to come over to one of the great texts, 00:05:35.56\00:05:37.27 Matthew 16:13 to 18, 00:05:37.30\00:05:43.67 dear hearts and gentle people, 00:05:43.71\00:05:45.07 here in beautiful Southern California 00:05:45.11\00:05:49.11 where it's not raining today, it's a beautiful sunny day. 00:05:49.14\00:05:52.91 Matthew 16:13 to 18, 00:05:52.95\00:05:56.48 "When Jesus came into the region 00:05:56.52\00:05:58.42 of Caesarea Philippi, 00:05:58.45\00:06:01.56 He asked His disciples, saying, 00:06:01.59\00:06:04.29 'Who do men say that I, the Son of man, am?' 00:06:04.33\00:06:08.66 So they said, 'Some say John the Baptist, 00:06:08.70\00:06:10.63 some Elijah, 00:06:10.67\00:06:12.00 others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' 00:06:12.03\00:06:15.10 He said to them, 00:06:15.14\00:06:16.47 'But who do you say that I am?' 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.67 Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, 00:06:19.71\00:06:25.71 the Son of the living God.' 00:06:25.75\00:06:27.98 Jesus answered and said to him, 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.52 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, 00:06:29.55\00:06:31.59 for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, 00:06:31.62\00:06:33.86 but My Father who is in heaven. 00:06:33.89\00:06:36.22 And I also say to you that you are Peter,'" 00:06:36.26\00:06:39.06 that means a stone. 00:06:39.09\00:06:40.43 "You are Peter, the stone, and on this rock, 00:06:40.46\00:06:43.03 I will build My church, 00:06:43.06\00:06:44.53 and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." 00:06:44.57\00:06:48.84 The church is built upon the rock. 00:06:48.87\00:06:52.71 That was Peter's confession. 00:06:52.74\00:06:55.98 "I say unto you," he said to Christ, 00:06:56.01\00:06:59.21 "You are the Son of the living God, 00:06:59.25\00:07:02.32 Christ, the Son of the living God is the rock 00:07:02.35\00:07:06.25 on which Christ built His church." 00:07:06.29\00:07:08.62 Now, I want you to know this, 00:07:08.66\00:07:09.99 I want this to get down 00:07:10.03\00:07:11.36 under the molecules of your mind. 00:07:11.39\00:07:14.06 The church cannot be defeated 00:07:14.10\00:07:16.03 because it is not built upon a man. 00:07:16.06\00:07:18.63 It is built upon Christ. 00:07:18.67\00:07:20.77 The church is not built upon the pope. 00:07:20.80\00:07:22.74 We're not here to discuss or argue with the pope. 00:07:22.77\00:07:26.64 But the pope is not the rock, 00:07:26.68\00:07:29.71 the pope is a sinful human being like you and me. 00:07:29.74\00:07:35.65 And if the church is built upon a sinful human being, 00:07:35.68\00:07:38.99 that church is going to go down. 00:07:39.02\00:07:42.32 But the true church of Jesus is built upon the rock, 00:07:42.36\00:07:47.20 and you can't move the rock. 00:07:47.23\00:07:50.03 You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. 00:07:50.07\00:07:54.00 You can't get rid of the church in Australia. 00:07:54.04\00:07:56.94 I don't care what the secular, liberal media 00:07:56.97\00:08:00.34 tries to brainwash the people into believing. 00:08:00.38\00:08:03.35 They're wrong. 00:08:03.38\00:08:04.71 Look at this church here. 00:08:04.75\00:08:06.55 This is in Sydney, Australia, 00:08:06.58\00:08:10.35 one of the biggest churches in the world, 00:08:10.39\00:08:13.25 sending missionaries around the world. 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.09 They're even sending, wait for this one, 00:08:16.12\00:08:19.29 even sending missionaries to America. 00:08:19.33\00:08:25.23 Do you think we need them? 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.57 Yeah, you can't get rid of it, 00:08:28.60\00:08:31.64 can't get rid of the church, 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.64 you can't get rid of the Kingdom of God. 00:08:33.68\00:08:36.95 The prime minister of Australia, 00:08:36.98\00:08:39.31 the honorable Scott Morrison, 00:08:39.35\00:08:43.02 and the leader of the opposition... 00:08:43.05\00:08:46.12 This is the prime minister 00:08:46.15\00:08:48.12 and at the center of the screen, you have... 00:08:48.16\00:08:51.89 This is Parliament House, 00:08:51.93\00:08:54.70 the great city of Canberra where we have lived. 00:08:54.73\00:08:58.23 This is the leader of the opposition, 00:08:58.27\00:09:01.07 her Majesty's loyal opposition. 00:09:01.10\00:09:05.14 This is the Westminster system 00:09:05.17\00:09:07.84 where the leader of the nation 00:09:07.88\00:09:09.68 has to go before Parliament every week 00:09:09.71\00:09:13.01 and be cross questioned. 00:09:13.05\00:09:16.12 Do you think it's a good idea? 00:09:16.15\00:09:18.85 Yes, it is, 00:09:18.89\00:09:20.22 if you want honesty in government 00:09:20.26\00:09:21.72 and if you want honesty from the politicians. 00:09:21.76\00:09:28.10 These are Australia's two main leaders 00:09:28.13\00:09:33.57 and they're both Christians. 00:09:33.60\00:09:38.44 One of the greatest disasters for the Christian church 00:09:38.47\00:09:41.54 was the invasion of Iraq. 00:09:41.58\00:09:45.21 Most people are not aware what a disaster it was. 00:09:45.25\00:09:49.68 We know, Iraqi Christians 00:09:49.72\00:09:52.12 who had to flee from Iraq to Australia, 00:09:52.15\00:09:55.19 America, other countries 00:09:55.22\00:09:56.76 because when Iraq was invaded, 00:09:56.79\00:10:01.70 we almost destroyed the Christian church 00:10:01.73\00:10:04.10 in the Iraq, did you know that? 00:10:04.13\00:10:06.43 We almost destroyed the Jewish people, 00:10:06.47\00:10:09.00 they had to flee and get out of Iraq. 00:10:09.04\00:10:13.51 Tragedy! 00:10:13.54\00:10:16.04 And when somebody was discussing 00:10:16.08\00:10:18.18 the decimation of the Christian church in Iraq 00:10:18.21\00:10:21.28 because of the invasion. 00:10:21.32\00:10:24.09 An atheist said this, 00:10:24.12\00:10:25.79 "Christian should not be too worried 00:10:25.82\00:10:28.92 because you can't kill the church." 00:10:28.96\00:10:32.73 And I don't care what people say, 00:10:32.76\00:10:34.76 you shouldn't be too worried 00:10:34.80\00:10:36.13 because you can't kill the church, 00:10:36.16\00:10:38.10 it is built upon Christ. 00:10:38.13\00:10:40.17 And today, I want to give you some glimpses of grace 00:10:40.20\00:10:43.91 from the most unlikely place from down under. 00:10:43.94\00:10:48.11 Recently, I went to Manila. 00:10:48.14\00:10:52.35 And firstly, I flew to Sydney on what I think 00:10:52.38\00:10:55.98 is one of the best airlines in the world. 00:10:56.02\00:11:00.02 This is not a commercial. 00:11:00.06\00:11:03.22 I flew with Virgin, Australia. 00:11:03.26\00:11:07.96 Just a great airline. 00:11:08.00\00:11:11.47 Now the flight was delayed in Los Angeles, 00:11:11.50\00:11:13.87 and I had a flight to catch from Sydney to another place. 00:11:13.90\00:11:17.57 I didn't have a lot of time. 00:11:17.61\00:11:18.94 So I went, and I spoke to one of the flight attendants, 00:11:18.97\00:11:23.51 and I said, 00:11:23.55\00:11:24.91 "It doesn't appear 00:11:24.95\00:11:26.28 so I'm going to have a lot of time." 00:11:26.31\00:11:28.62 All she said to me, "We'll take care of you." 00:11:28.65\00:11:32.35 This is a true story. 00:11:32.39\00:11:35.66 When I got off and I was at the carousel to get my bags, 00:11:35.69\00:11:41.13 four of these girls came up to me and surrounded me. 00:11:41.16\00:11:44.80 I thought, you know, it must be my good looks. 00:11:44.83\00:11:50.67 I just don't... 00:22:42.76\00:22:46.09 Weren't flapping their wings, they're soaring. 00:22:46.13\00:22:48.73 And then I saw a little mother bird 00:22:48.76\00:22:51.27 beating wings like crazy, 00:22:51.30\00:22:53.77 trying to get altitude 00:22:53.80\00:22:55.20 because she had a great attitude. 00:22:55.24\00:22:57.04 And off she got... 00:22:57.07\00:22:58.61 And when she got up high above the eagles, 00:22:58.64\00:23:00.64 she dived bomb them. 00:23:00.68\00:23:04.08 Talk about courage. 00:23:04.11\00:23:06.08 She dived bomb the eagles. 00:23:06.11\00:23:07.82 But they sort of just, 00:23:07.85\00:23:09.88 let it go. 00:23:09.92\00:23:11.25 I stood there 00:23:11.29\00:23:13.22 and I watched these mighty eagles. 00:23:13.25\00:23:17.39 And as they were soaring, they weren't flapping. 00:23:17.43\00:23:20.63 No exertion. They were just, just soaring. 00:23:24.27\00:23:28.17 I stood there and watched them 00:23:28.20\00:23:29.97 until they're up thousands of feet. 00:23:30.01\00:23:35.24 No hard work. 00:23:35.28\00:23:36.75 You know what I thought? 00:23:36.78\00:23:40.08 It's a bit like grace. 00:23:40.12\00:23:41.45 Most of the time, we spend our time flapping, 00:23:41.48\00:23:45.35 and fretting, and fussing, 00:23:45.39\00:23:49.82 and salvation is by grace. 00:23:49.86\00:23:52.46 Please look at Isaiah 40:27 to 31, 00:23:52.49\00:23:55.53 it's one of my favorite texts. 00:23:55.56\00:23:57.57 I read it last night to a Jewish friend of mine, 00:23:57.60\00:24:01.10 who was a doctor, 00:24:01.14\00:24:02.47 who is not being in good health. 00:24:02.50\00:24:05.47 He's not doing too well at present. 00:24:05.51\00:24:07.11 He's going to get better though. 00:24:07.14\00:24:09.94 I'm reading this text, 00:24:09.98\00:24:11.65 Isaiah 40:27 and onwards. 00:24:11.68\00:24:15.25 "Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel: 00:24:15.28\00:24:17.69 'My way is hidden from the Lord, 00:24:17.72\00:24:20.72 my just claim is passed over by my God.' 00:24:20.76\00:24:22.99 " What's God doing? 00:24:23.02\00:24:24.79 "Have you not known?
