Welcome back, we're talking about the killing of Jesus. 00:00:13.98\00:00:17.65 We're gonna answer this question now 00:00:17.68\00:00:19.05 that we brought up 00:00:19.08\00:00:20.42 in the last part of the program, 00:00:20.45\00:00:22.12 what mottos were involved in the killing of Jesus? 00:00:22.15\00:00:26.39 Well, sorted, petty, little sins 00:00:26.42\00:00:30.59 that most of us folks practice. 00:00:30.63\00:00:32.86 Would you come over here to Matthew 27:15-18, 00:00:32.89\00:00:36.40 that's a text in the New Testament. 00:00:36.43\00:00:38.23 Matthew 27:15 and onwards, 00:00:38.27\00:00:42.14 "Now at the feast the governor 00:00:42.17\00:00:43.64 was accustomed to release the multitude one prisoner 00:00:43.67\00:00:48.18 whom they wished. 00:00:48.21\00:00:49.54 And at that time 00:00:49.58\00:00:50.91 they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 00:00:50.95\00:00:54.35 Therefore, when they had gathered together, 00:00:54.38\00:00:56.35 Pilate said to them, 00:00:56.38\00:00:57.72 'Whom do you want me to release to you? 00:00:57.75\00:00:59.65 Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?' 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.42 For he knew they had handed Him over because of..." 00:01:02.46\00:01:07.00 What? 00:01:07.03\00:01:08.36 'Cause of envy, not a really big sin, is it? 00:01:08.40\00:01:12.30 Not like murder, just a little sin, 00:01:12.33\00:01:14.74 most people have got a bit of envy in them. 00:01:14.77\00:01:18.14 The Jews were envious of Jesus because of His popularity. 00:01:18.17\00:01:23.28 We're talking about the Jewish leaders. 00:01:23.31\00:01:25.48 Because of His power, His influence, 00:01:25.51\00:01:27.72 they are the same sins today that you find in politics. 00:01:27.75\00:01:33.86 A envy, also not only I'm talking about politics 00:01:33.89\00:01:38.36 in the church, 00:01:38.39\00:01:40.30 politics in the church and politics in Washington, 00:01:40.33\00:01:43.87 in the world. 00:01:43.90\00:01:46.47 Then it was Pilate, 00:01:46.50\00:01:48.84 Pilate's big problem of course was job security. 00:01:48.87\00:01:53.24 You know, if you let this man go, you know, 00:01:53.27\00:01:56.01 friend of Caesar's and so he said," 00:01:56.04\00:01:59.61 Well, I guess when it comes to the bottom line, 00:01:59.65\00:02:02.65 it's better for me to keep my job 00:02:02.68\00:02:05.09 than to follow Jesus. 00:02:05.12\00:02:06.86 Also pride. 00:02:06.89\00:02:09.36 And that doesn't seem to be such a big sin, 00:02:09.39\00:02:11.09 oh, the pride, people don't go to job 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.36 because of pride. 00:02:13.40\00:02:14.73 Look at John 11:47 and onwards. 00:02:14.76\00:02:19.00 My dear friends, John 11:47 and onwards. 00:02:19.03\00:02:23.57 "Then the chief priests and the Pharisees 00:02:23.61\00:02:26.57 gathered a council and said, 'What shall we do? 00:02:26.61\00:02:30.88 For this Man works many signs. 00:02:30.91\00:02:35.18 If we let Him alone, everybody will believe in Him, 00:02:35.22\00:02:38.75 and the Romans will come and take away both our place 00:02:38.79\00:02:41.99 and nation.' 00:02:42.02\00:02:43.36 And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, 00:02:43.39\00:02:47.76 said to them, 'You know nothing at all, 00:02:47.80\00:02:51.57 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us 00:02:51.60\00:02:53.97 that one man should die for the people, 00:02:54.00\00:02:57.11 and not the whole nation should perish.' 00:02:57.14\00:03:01.11 " This was a form of nationalism or racism. 00:03:01.14\00:03:05.58 You know, we are the greatest nation in the world. 00:03:05.61\00:03:09.05 And if anything happens, 00:03:09.08\00:03:10.69 we are going to lose our nation, 00:03:10.72\00:03:13.66 that's a very common sin today. 00:03:13.69\00:03:15.86 These sins, these sinners 00:03:15.89\00:03:17.73 were not so different to you and to me, 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.86 not big glaring sins 00:03:20.90\00:03:22.40 but the common nasty little sins 00:03:22.43\00:03:25.40 of the common people. 00:03:25.43\00:03:29.40 Do Bible believe in Christians believe 00:03:29.44\00:03:33.01 in slaughterhouse religion? 00:03:33.04\00:03:35.88 The moral influence theory, let me talk about it. 00:03:35.91\00:03:39.48 The people who believe in the moral influence theory 00:03:39.51\00:03:41.98 and it is centered really any place of the world 00:03:42.02\00:03:44.85 where it centered is southern California. 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.89 The moral influence theory says this, 00:03:47.92\00:03:51.03 "Does a loving God demand a sacrifice 00:03:51.06\00:03:54.70 before He can forgive us?" 00:03:54.73\00:03:58.33 I say, I forgive my children, 00:03:58.37\00:04:02.14 we forgive our children 00:04:02.17\00:04:03.74 without demanding a blood sacrifice. 00:04:03.77\00:04:07.11 God forgave the prodigal son 00:04:07.14\00:04:08.74 when he came home 00:04:08.78\00:04:10.11 without demanding a blood sacrifice. 00:04:10.15\00:04:13.42 Why would God demand 00:04:13.45\00:04:16.55 a blood sacrifice on the cross? 00:04:16.58\00:04:20.92 Gandhi said, "Jesus was a great example, 00:04:20.96\00:04:26.19 greatest in the world." 00:04:26.23\00:04:28.56 But he said, "No one can die for the sins of another." 00:04:28.60\00:04:33.44 And the Muslims of course say exactly the same thing, 00:04:33.47\00:04:35.77 no person can die for the sins of another. 00:04:35.80\00:04:39.67 Liberal theologians like Dr. Leslie Weatherhead 00:04:39.71\00:04:44.45 who wrote the marvelous book 00:04:44.48\00:04:46.55 'The Transforming Friendship' said this. 00:04:46.58\00:04:51.65 "The idea that a loving God demands a propitiation 00:04:51.69\00:04:57.99 at a blood sacrifice, 00:04:58.03\00:05:00.10 this idea is a pagan idea that crept into the church." 00:05:00.13\00:05:06.27 And he said, 00:05:06.30\00:05:07.70 "All enlighten Christians 00:05:07.74\00:05:10.31 will give up the idea of propitiation 00:05:10.34\00:05:14.64 and a blood sacrifice 00:05:14.68\00:05:17.48 to atone for the wrath of God." 00:05:17.51\00:05:22.08 I want you to notice some text, I want you to think about this. 00:05:22.12\00:05:24.95 Romans 1:18, 00:05:24.99\00:05:27.19 Romans 1:18 says, 00:05:27.22\00:05:30.19 "For the wrath of God 00:05:30.23\00:05:31.56 is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness 00:05:31.59\00:05:35.10 and unrighteousness of men, 00:05:35.13\00:05:37.13 who suppress the truth in unrighteousness..." 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.10 Look at me, the Bible teaches, 00:05:40.14\00:05:43.47 this is the most unpopular teaching in the world today. 00:05:43.51\00:05:47.34 The Bible teaches 00:05:47.38\00:05:49.21 that God is righteous 00:05:49.24\00:05:52.38 and holy, 00:05:52.41\00:05:54.72 and therefore, 00:05:54.75\00:05:57.05 He has a righteous wrath against sin. 00:05:57.09\00:06:01.92 The Bible says, 00:06:01.96\00:06:03.29 the wrath of God is revealed otherwise, 00:06:03.32\00:06:07.36 why did God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah, please tell me? 00:06:07.40\00:06:12.57 Why did God destroy 00:06:12.60\00:06:14.17 the world of the antediluvians? 00:06:14.20\00:06:19.61 God is not a big, 00:06:19.64\00:06:23.28 woolly teddy bear, 00:06:23.31\00:06:26.61 He's a God of love, 00:06:26.65\00:06:28.58 but the Bible tells me, He is a God of holiness. 00:06:28.62\00:06:32.95 Now, would you notice 1 Thessalonians 1:10? 00:06:32.99\00:06:37.23 1 Thessalonians 1:10, 00:06:37.26\00:06:41.26 "And to wait for His Son from heaven, 00:06:41.30\00:06:44.10 whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us..." 00:06:44.13\00:06:49.00 What does it say? 00:06:49.04\00:06:50.37 "From the wrath to come..." 00:06:50.41\00:06:53.91 So the concept of God having wrath 00:06:53.94\00:06:57.21 is a concept that is taught in the Bible. 00:06:57.25\00:06:59.31 The Bible says, 00:06:59.35\00:07:00.68 "When Jesus comes and destroys the wicked, 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.99 it will be as an expression 00:07:04.02\00:07:06.52 of His holy wrath." 00:07:06.55\00:07:09.92 A very unpopular doctrine but it is true. 00:07:09.96\00:07:13.16 Come over here to... 00:07:13.19\00:07:15.36 What else can I show you? 00:07:15.40\00:07:16.73 Come over to Romans 5:8, it says, 00:07:16.77\00:07:20.94 "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, 00:07:20.97\00:07:24.74 in that while we were still sinners, 00:07:24.77\00:07:27.11 Christ died for us." 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.81 Look at me. 00:07:28.84\00:07:31.81 The most important characteristic of God 00:07:31.85\00:07:35.52 is not His wrath, 00:07:35.55\00:07:37.05 but His love. 00:07:37.09\00:07:40.56 He is a God 00:07:40.59\00:07:41.92 that is full of love, 00:07:41.96\00:07:46.76 otherwise, why did He come down and died on the cross for us? 00:07:46.80\00:07:50.53 So He is full of love, but the Bible says, 00:07:50.57\00:07:54.24 He's a holy God and therefore, 00:07:54.27\00:07:57.54 He has wrath against sin. 00:07:57.57\00:08:00.41 Now, I come to the most important truth 00:08:00.44\00:08:03.55 that I can explain unto you 00:08:03.58\00:08:06.85 and this truth will withstand 00:08:06.88\00:08:08.92 the powers of doctrines. 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.62 God and Christ 00:08:15.06\00:08:16.52 took our sins upon Himself 00:08:16.56\00:08:19.53 and satisfied His own justice 00:08:19.56\00:08:23.40 and His wrath against sin. 00:08:23.43\00:08:27.77 I want you to think about it. 00:08:27.80\00:08:29.70 I want you to come over here 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.07 to one of the most important passages in the Bible 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.64 and that is the Book of Romans 3:19. 00:08:33.68\00:08:38.18 And if you want to be saved, 00:08:38.21\00:08:39.58 you need to understand and read the Book of Romans. 00:08:39.61\00:08:41.95 Romans 3:19 says, 00:08:41.98\00:08:44.49 "Now we know that whatever the law says, 00:08:44.52\00:08:47.09 it says to those who are under the law, 00:08:47.12\00:08:49.62 that every mouth may be stopped, 00:08:49.66\00:08:51.16 and the whole world become guilty before God." 00:08:51.19\00:08:53.76 The Bible tells us, 00:08:53.80\00:08:55.13 the whole world is guilty before God 00:08:55.16\00:08:57.13 because we've all broken the law of God 00:08:57.17\00:08:59.33 and we're all sinners. 00:08:59.37\00:09:02.10 The Bible says, "For all have sinned..." 00:09:02.14\00:09:04.31 That's every one of us. 00:09:04.34\00:09:05.67 "And fall short of the glory of God..." 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.31 That's every one of us, 00:09:07.34\00:09:08.84 "Being justified, or declared righteous, 00:09:08.88\00:09:11.95 freely by His grace 00:09:11.98\00:09:13.55 through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 00:09:13.58\00:09:15.95 whom God set forth as a propitiation." 00:09:15.98\00:09:21.72 This is a correct translation in the New KJV 00:09:21.76\00:09:25.56 and in the old KJV and many other translations. 00:09:25.59\00:09:28.80 The Bible says, 00:09:28.83\00:09:30.17 "The Christ was propitiation by His blood, 00:09:30.20\00:09:33.07 through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness..." 00:09:33.10\00:09:36.67 The cross demonstrates His righteousness, 00:09:36.71\00:09:39.41 "Because in His forbearance 00:09:39.44\00:09:41.64 God had passed over the sins 00:09:41.68\00:09:43.28 that were previously committed 00:09:43.31\00:09:45.35 to demonstrate at the present time 00:09:45.38\00:09:48.22 His righteousness..." 00:09:48.25\00:09:49.58 The cross demonstrates His righteousness, 00:09:49.62\00:09:52.05 "That He might be just..." 00:09:52.09\00:09:56.99 God is got to be just, 00:09:57.03\00:10:00.43 "That He might be just 00:10:00.46\00:10:01.86 and the justifier of the one 00:10:01.90\00:10:04.53 who has faith in Jesus." 00:10:04.57\00:10:07.44 Now the Bible tells me, 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.64 that Christ hanging on the cross 00:10:09.67\00:10:12.34 was a propitiation, 00:10:12.37\00:10:14.18 and it was necessary 00:10:14.21\00:10:16.04 so that our righteous God could be just, 00:10:16.08\00:10:20.65 when He forgives our sins. 00:10:20.68\00:10:22.62 Now this is called 00:10:26.09\00:10:28.66 the doctrine of the atonement. 00:10:28.69\00:10:33.60 Otherwise, please explain to me 00:10:33.63\00:10:35.96 the cry of dereliction from the Son of God, 00:10:36.00\00:10:38.77 when He hung on the cross and He cried out 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.87 and said, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" 00:10:40.90\00:10:45.54 Was this theatrics? 00:10:45.57\00:10:48.54 Or where this the wonderings of a demented mind? 00:10:48.58\00:10:53.01 Now this was a soul, 00:10:53.05\00:10:54.55 this was God in Christ 00:10:54.58\00:10:56.99 taking His own medicine 00:10:57.02\00:11:00.16 and bearing the sin of the world. 00:11:00.19\00:11:04.79 That is why the moral influence theory 00:11:04.83\00:11:07.26 as been damned as a heresy 00:11:07.30\00:11:10.17 by all mainstream Christians. 00:11:10.20\00:11:14.24 Look at Galatians 3:13 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.91 which is one of the most amazing disturbing texts 00:11:17.94\00:11:21.78 in the Bible written by Paul, 00:11:21.81\00:11:24.45 the great Jewish scholar, Galatians 3:13. 00:11:24.48\00:11:28.98 "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law..." 00:11:29.02\00:11:32.82 There's nothing wrong with that law, 00:11:32.85\00:11:36.02 but when we break it, we come under a curse, 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.43 "The curse of the law, 00:11:38.46\00:11:39.79 having become a curse for us..." 00:11:39.83\00:11:43.16 Christ to curse for us... 00:11:43.20\00:11:44.70 "For it is written, 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.07 'Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.'" 00:11:46.10\00:11:49.47 So the Bible teaches 00:11:49.50\00:11:50.97 that when Christ was hung on a tree, 00:11:51.01\00:11:53.81 the Bible said, 00:11:53.84\00:11:55.18 "He was cursed for us". 00:11:55.21\00:11:59.35 Now, these are disturbing texts, 00:11:59.38\00:12:02.72 but they showed the mind of God. 00:12:02.75\00:12:07.19 Charles Ryrie, the Bible scholar said this, 00:12:07.22\00:12:10.23 "Propitiation means the turning away of wrath 00:12:10.26\00:12:15.13 by an offering." 00:12:15.16\00:12:17.30 In relation to Soteriology, the doctrine of salvation. 00:12:17.33\00:12:21.24 "Propitiation means placating or satisfying 00:12:21.27\00:12:24.97 the wrath of God 00:12:25.01\00:12:26.44 by the atoning sacrifice of Christ." 00:12:26.47\00:12:31.65 Let me explain this to you 00:12:31.68\00:12:33.15 because this is the very heart of the Bible 00:12:33.18\00:12:36.55 and this is the heart 00:12:36.58\00:12:37.92 of the character of God. 00:12:37.95\00:12:42.32 The Bible tells me that God must be just 00:12:42.36\00:12:46.09 because He's a righteous God, 00:12:46.13\00:12:48.60 He's not just a teddy bear 00:12:48.63\00:12:50.60 that you can play with. 00:12:50.63\00:12:52.23 And the Bible says, 00:12:52.27\00:12:53.70 that when we sinned 00:12:53.74\00:12:55.90 and broke the law of God, 00:12:55.94\00:12:57.51 we came under the wrath of God. 00:12:57.54\00:13:00.84 The Bible teaches this, 00:13:00.88\00:13:02.88 but the Bible tells me this, 00:13:02.91\00:13:04.85 that on the cross, 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.78 God in Christ 00:13:07.82\00:13:09.82 provided satisfaction 00:13:09.85\00:13:14.56 for His holiness. 00:13:14.59\00:13:16.19 You know, a mother sometimes says to a child, 00:13:19.63\00:13:23.37 I want you to take this castor oil, 00:13:23.40\00:13:27.10 child says, "It's awful, it tastes bad." 00:13:27.14\00:13:29.50 The mother says, "Let me take some for you." 00:13:29.54\00:13:32.84 So she takes her own medicine. 00:13:32.87\00:13:37.21 God on the cross 00:13:37.25\00:13:38.78 demanded righteousness. 00:13:38.81\00:13:42.68 When man sinned, 00:13:42.72\00:13:44.25 God demanded righteousness 00:13:44.29\00:13:46.12 because God is a righteous and a holy God, 00:13:46.15\00:13:48.96 don't you understand 00:13:48.99\00:13:50.66 that God cannot live with sin. 00:13:50.69\00:13:55.76 People say that everybody is going to be saved, 00:13:55.80\00:13:58.57 that is the doctrine of the devil, 00:13:58.60\00:14:00.17 that's nowhere taught in the Bible. 00:14:00.20\00:14:02.14 The Bible says, when Christ comes back, 00:14:02.17\00:14:05.21 it says, He comes back with wrath 00:14:05.24\00:14:08.98 and He destroys a world that is turned away from Him... 00:14:09.01\00:14:12.71 but what a tragedy 00:14:16.18\00:14:17.52 because Christ died for the sins of every man, 00:14:17.55\00:14:20.59 woman and child so that every man, 00:14:20.62\00:14:22.49 woman and child can be saved and go to heaven. 00:14:22.52\00:14:26.76 And the greatest sin of all 00:14:26.80\00:14:28.26 is the rejection of the cross of Christ. 00:14:28.30\00:14:30.67 And so on the cross, 00:14:33.77\00:14:37.44 God suffered 00:14:37.47\00:14:40.18 the vengeance of His own holy nature. 00:14:40.21\00:14:44.15 It wasn't the case of God pushing out an innocent Son 00:14:44.18\00:14:49.02 and saying, "You go to the cross 00:14:49.05\00:14:51.19 and I'm going to stay back here 00:14:51.22\00:14:53.02 and I'm going to watch it all." 00:14:53.05\00:14:54.86 Not at all, 00:14:54.89\00:14:56.22 God was in Christ 00:14:56.26\00:14:57.99 and on the cross. 00:14:58.03\00:15:01.20 Christ, the Bible says 00:15:01.23\00:15:03.40 became our propitiation. 00:15:03.43\00:15:06.53 And He paid the price. 00:15:10.81\00:15:14.41 Now, got to tell you a story. 00:15:14.44\00:15:19.58 How did the affairs of David 00:15:19.61\00:15:22.02 and especially one affair. 00:15:22.05\00:15:25.55 How did the affairs of David, king of Israel 00:15:25.59\00:15:28.26 and his family help me to understand 00:15:28.29\00:15:30.89 God's problem and the gospel? 00:15:30.93\00:15:34.43 I look you in the eye and let me tell you something, 00:15:34.46\00:15:38.60 people today play with sin 00:15:38.63\00:15:42.00 because they have no idea 00:15:42.04\00:15:44.84 that sin means death. 00:15:44.87\00:15:48.14 And when Christ 00:15:48.18\00:15:49.74 took our sin upon Himself, 00:15:49.78\00:15:53.05 it was death and hell. 00:15:53.08\00:15:56.25 And crying out my God, my God, why have You forsaken Me? 00:15:56.28\00:16:00.12 That is the last cry of the last person 00:16:00.16\00:16:04.73 who dies shut out 00:16:04.76\00:16:06.43 from the kingdom of God 00:16:06.46\00:16:09.66 without Christ. 00:16:09.70\00:16:11.87 Either He bears our sin 00:16:11.90\00:16:13.97 or we bear it alone. 00:16:14.00\00:16:17.64 Why do you think He came down? 00:16:17.67\00:16:20.01 These are the characters in our play is David, 00:16:26.18\00:16:30.82 he's the king. 00:16:30.85\00:16:32.92 Now the king has got a special job. 00:16:32.95\00:16:37.99 When he was the king of Israel, the people of God, 00:16:38.03\00:16:40.93 David had one great job, 00:16:40.96\00:16:43.60 uphold the law. 00:16:43.63\00:16:46.63 David is the law giver, 00:16:46.67\00:16:48.90 David upholds the law. 00:16:48.94\00:16:51.24 Then, number two character, 00:16:51.27\00:16:54.44 a beautifully, not totally innocent woman, 00:16:54.48\00:16:58.41 her name is Bathsheba. 00:16:58.45\00:17:01.28 And David sees her taking a bath 00:17:01.32\00:17:04.99 and on the top of the roof, 00:17:05.02\00:17:07.49 2 Samuel 11:2. 00:17:07.52\00:17:10.66 Here is the text, 00:17:10.69\00:17:12.49 "Then it happened one evening that David..." 00:17:12.53\00:17:14.73 The person who upholds the law, the king. 00:17:14.76\00:17:17.53 "Arose from his bed 00:17:17.57\00:17:19.80 and walked on the roof of the king's house. 00:17:19.83\00:17:22.84 And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, 00:17:22.87\00:17:25.57 and the woman 00:17:25.61\00:17:26.94 was very beautiful to behold." 00:17:26.98\00:17:30.88 Now the first look was not sin, 00:17:30.91\00:17:34.28 but when he said to his attendant, 00:17:34.32\00:17:36.69 find me the binoculars, then it was. 00:17:36.72\00:17:41.26 And so the first look is not sin, 00:17:41.29\00:17:44.89 but sin indulged 00:17:44.93\00:17:46.46 is another thing. 00:17:46.49\00:17:50.17 Now this beautiful woman, 00:17:50.20\00:17:53.74 not totally innocent has a husband. 00:17:53.77\00:17:57.27 He's good man, he's one of David's mighty soldiers, 00:17:57.31\00:18:00.28 his name is Uriah. 00:18:00.31\00:18:02.18 He's not even an Israelite, 00:18:02.21\00:18:04.11 he's a Hittite. 00:18:04.15\00:18:07.22 And so David tells him to come from the battle, 00:18:07.25\00:18:10.49 he comes from the battle. 00:18:10.52\00:18:12.65 And he says, "Don't go back to your house." 00:18:12.69\00:18:15.12 You know why? 00:18:15.16\00:18:16.93 Because the woman had already told David, 00:18:16.96\00:18:20.00 send him a letter I'm pregnant 00:18:20.03\00:18:23.53 and you are the father. 00:18:23.57\00:18:25.83 So the king calls in Uriah 00:18:25.87\00:18:27.94 and then the Bible tells me he gets him drunk. 00:18:27.97\00:18:30.81 Why does he get him drunk? 00:18:30.84\00:18:33.58 So he gets him drunk and he says, now go home, 00:18:33.61\00:18:37.08 but Uriah says, "No, how can I go home 00:18:37.11\00:18:39.01 when the ark of God is out in the field? 00:18:39.05\00:18:41.38 So he doesn't go home. 00:18:41.42\00:18:44.22 So what does the king do? 00:18:44.25\00:18:46.76 King murders him. 00:18:46.79\00:18:48.12 His job was to uphold the law. 00:18:51.79\00:18:55.13 Then David had a lot of sons and daughters. 00:18:55.16\00:18:57.83 One son was the young guy by the name of Amnon. 00:18:57.87\00:19:02.20 He's got a half sister, 00:19:02.24\00:19:04.34 her name, goodness me, 00:19:04.37\00:19:08.11 her name was Tamar 00:19:08.14\00:19:10.31 and she's a beautiful girl. 00:19:10.35\00:19:15.95 And this young guy, 00:19:15.98\00:19:17.92 this young guy Amnon deceives her, 00:19:17.95\00:19:22.12 rapes her, rejects her. 00:19:22.16\00:19:25.76 You know what David does? 00:19:25.79\00:19:27.50 The Bible says, the Bible says, 00:19:27.53\00:19:29.40 uses the word David is furious. 00:19:29.43\00:19:32.77 What does he do? 00:19:32.80\00:19:34.24 Nothing. 00:19:34.27\00:19:36.40 You know, why he does nothing? 00:19:36.44\00:19:41.38 He does nothing because 00:19:41.41\00:19:45.15 of what he's done 00:19:45.18\00:19:48.28 with Bathsheba 00:19:48.32\00:19:50.65 and also Uriah. 00:19:50.69\00:19:52.85 He was a man 00:19:52.89\00:19:54.22 who was supposed to uphold the law. 00:19:54.26\00:19:57.69 He represented God. 00:19:57.73\00:20:00.53 Then there is the dandy, 00:20:00.56\00:20:02.60 his name is Absalom. 00:20:02.63\00:20:07.07 He's the brother of Tamar, 00:20:07.10\00:20:09.60 he becomes tremendously indignant, 00:20:09.64\00:20:12.27 rightly so, 00:20:12.31\00:20:14.11 he's a beautiful young man, he's got thick hair. 00:20:14.14\00:20:17.55 Every time he has his hair cut, 00:20:17.58\00:20:19.45 its' five or six ponds, the Bible says. 00:20:19.48\00:20:23.45 So he plots 00:20:23.49\00:20:24.82 and there is a big party at Absalom's house. 00:20:24.85\00:20:29.56 He says to the king, 00:20:29.59\00:20:31.66 "Can all the king sons come, will you come?" 00:20:31.69\00:20:33.90 And David says, 00:20:33.93\00:20:35.26 "No, no, my son you just go ahead." 00:20:35.30\00:20:37.93 So there is the big party, 00:20:37.97\00:20:40.24 they get Amnon drunk 00:20:40.27\00:20:42.67 and then Absalom says, 00:20:42.70\00:20:44.47 "kill him," 00:20:44.51\00:20:47.28 so they kill him. 00:20:47.31\00:20:48.68 What a story. 00:20:48.71\00:20:50.35 This is in the Bible. 00:20:50.38\00:20:51.71 Absalom escapes, the king grieves 00:20:54.72\00:20:57.02 and once his boy Absalom back, 00:20:57.05\00:20:59.25 but you know what he does? 00:20:59.29\00:21:01.02 Nothing. 00:21:01.06\00:21:03.16 Finally, David allows him to come home, 00:21:03.19\00:21:05.56 what should the king have done? 00:21:05.59\00:21:08.40 Justice, 00:21:08.43\00:21:10.23 uphold the law. 00:21:10.27\00:21:13.54 And then when Absalom gets back, 00:21:13.57\00:21:16.07 like the devil 00:21:16.10\00:21:17.57 he undermines the king's authority. 00:21:17.61\00:21:21.01 And soon there is a tremendous rebellion 00:21:21.04\00:21:24.68 and I want you to notice how it finishes. 00:21:24.71\00:21:26.95 2 Samuel 18:7, 00:21:26.98\00:21:29.95 14-15. 00:21:29.98\00:21:32.52 "The people of Israel 00:21:32.55\00:21:33.89 were overthrown there before the servants of David, 00:21:33.92\00:21:36.89 and a great slaughter of twenty thousand 00:21:36.93\00:21:39.66 took place that day." 00:21:39.69\00:21:41.66 We won't read the rest of it. 00:21:41.70\00:21:45.30 Absalom is caught hanging up in a tree. 00:21:45.33\00:21:49.50 They threw darts into his heart. 00:21:49.54\00:21:51.84 There are 20,000 widows, 00:21:51.87\00:21:54.51 maybe 50,000 orphans that day. 00:21:54.54\00:21:58.81 Twenty thousand killed, 00:21:58.85\00:22:00.62 you know, why? 00:22:00.65\00:22:04.35 Because the king did not know 00:22:04.39\00:22:08.46 how to be a king and a father, 00:22:08.49\00:22:12.39 you see? 00:22:12.43\00:22:13.76 So what does the father do? 00:22:13.80\00:22:15.66 Well, a father loves. 00:22:15.70\00:22:17.50 Father loves, what about the king? 00:22:17.53\00:22:19.30 He loves, he upholds justice. 00:22:19.33\00:22:23.17 And think of God's problem. 00:22:23.20\00:22:26.24 God is a father, therefore He loves. 00:22:26.27\00:22:30.71 God is the judge, 00:22:30.75\00:22:32.11 God is God, what does He do? 00:22:32.15\00:22:36.08 He upholds the law. 00:22:36.12\00:22:39.62 What is God's answer to our sin 00:22:39.65\00:22:42.82 because God did a lot better than David. 00:22:42.86\00:22:47.63 What is God's answer? 00:22:47.66\00:22:50.23 God loves us like David loved his children. 00:22:50.27\00:22:54.64 But God becomes a man 00:22:54.67\00:22:59.14 and God is punished 00:22:59.17\00:23:02.51 for the sin of the world. 00:23:02.54\00:23:04.25 So God upholds the law 00:23:11.69\00:23:15.76 as He loves us 00:23:15.79\00:23:19.16 that He might be just, 00:23:19.19\00:23:21.23 and the justifier the person who has faith in Jesus. 00:23:21.26\00:23:24.73 This is called the true gospel. 00:23:24.77\00:23:27.10 Anything less is a heresy and a lie. 00:23:27.14\00:23:32.11 This gospel forgives my sin 00:23:32.14\00:23:35.84 and God says, "I'm just, 00:23:35.88\00:23:38.88 because I borne it." 00:23:38.91\00:23:41.75 And it changes my life 00:23:41.78\00:23:44.09 like it did for Luther, 00:23:44.12\00:23:47.22 he couldn't understand this. 00:23:47.26\00:23:49.42 Priest, the Roman Catholic priest 00:23:49.46\00:23:51.49 couldn't understand it, 00:23:51.53\00:23:52.86 and one day he was found kneeling 00:23:52.89\00:23:54.86 before a crucifix and crying, 00:23:54.90\00:23:56.90 it dawned upon him, 00:23:56.93\00:23:58.57 the justice of God, the atonement. 00:23:58.60\00:24:01.17 My God, my God he is saying, 00:24:01.20\00:24:03.81 for me, for me, 00:24:03.84\00:24:06.27 that's the gospel. 00:24:06.31\00:24:08.04 And here's another text from the days of David, 00:24:08.08\00:24:11.38 2 Samuel 14:14, 00:24:11.41\00:24:16.05 an amazing text, 00:24:16.08\00:24:18.09 look at this. 00:24:18.12\00:24:21.19 Here are the words of the wise women from Tekoa, 00:24:21.22\00:24:25.79 "Like water spilled on the ground, 00:24:25.83\00:24:28.06 which cannot be recovered, 00:24:28.10\00:24:29.60 so we must die. 00:24:29.63\00:24:33.97 But that is not what God desires rather..." 00:24:34.00\00:24:37.61 Look at this, "He devises ways 00:24:37.64\00:24:40.81 so that a banished person 00:24:40.84\00:24:43.01 does not remain banished from him." 00:24:43.04\00:24:47.22 God works out a way. 00:24:47.25\00:24:50.29 We've crucified Christ saying, 00:25:43.37\00:25:45.67 "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" 00:25:45.71\00:25:48.48 He was forsaken 00:25:48.51\00:25:49.84 so that I might never be forsaken. 00:25:49.88\00:25:52.45 He suffered 00:25:56.02\00:25:58.09 the wrath of God against sin 00:25:58.12\00:26:02.29 so that I could be justified by faith 00:26:02.32\00:26:07.63 and have peace with God.
