One of the first
people-- I want to ask you that,

decided at some point

How did that come about?

I was a boy of about 15 or
about 14 or 15 years of age.

I was going through
trouble time in my life.

You know, teenagers
doing it all the time.

And what we did back then,
we thought it was really bad,

but by today's world
what we did back then

was pretty innocent,

like sneaking at
the back of the church,

around the back of the church
and smoking some cigarettes

and things like that.

That was the
biggest sin that one can do,

and going to the
movies, really bad.

But in my heart of hearts,

I felt that God
was calling to me

to be a minister

and especially
to be an evangelist.

Now, why I would think this,

I cannot explain
except for the grace of God.

But I had this conviction
that burned in my soul

that I needed to go
to the Avondale College

and trying to be a pastor

and most
importantly an evangelist,

preaching the
gospel around the world.

That had to come
from God. Absolutely.

So you became a pastor. Yes.

And did you have churches

for a number of
years before you--

I'm first and foremost a pastor.

I'm an evangelist, part time.

be an evangelist full time.

When I run a campaign,
like in El Salvador and Russia,

I've got to raise-- you know,

millions of dollars.

A big campaign today
cost about a million dollars.

People say, that's a
terrible lot of money.

No, it's a tiny bit of money

when you think

You know, we're not
going to talk about it

millions, even the billions,

important work is to go

into all the world
and to preach the gospel.

and I can only do that part-time

I've got great supporters,

raising a million dollars
to me is still a big deal.

take young people overseas

to realize this that if they're

I remember once I was
preaching with the translator

by the name of Igor Pespecan,
a Jewish Adventist Christian.

And all of a sudden I
became conscious of the fact

that there was a void,
there was no noise at all.

Everything has stopped.

And I looked at Igor,
this big, tall Russian guy.

And he was crying,
weeping. He couldn't go on.

Then I looked at the
audience of thousand,

they're all crying, all weeping.

And I stopped and I said,
"Igor, what's going on here?"

He said,

"The people are overcome
with emotion that you are here

and you're preaching the
word and for the first time

they are hearing a foreigner
preach the word of God."

That was the first
ever evangelistic campaign

in the Soviet
Union by a foreigner.

And in that same meeting, I
remember a bunch of soldiers

sitting up the back under their
lieutenant or captain whoever.

When I made an altar call,
they all stood to their feet

and they marched down.
00:21:52.21\00:21:54.01
Down they came.

All the people coming
down, but they made way,

these soldiers marched down.

And because the crowd
was so great, I said to them,

come up on the
stage, to the soldiers.

They marched up the
stairs, they marched,

There was a part

There've been times when I wish
that I could have an easy job

written in the Bible,

Yeah. Absolutely.

And what a vision
it takes to do that.

what surprised you was

how much money it would take
that you have to raise to go--

millions of dollars for these,

and I'm not sure

like a military campaign.

over you and reminded me

Lord blessed, he used you,

softened, he got us together

the Russian Orthodox Church,
