Well, I was raised in a
family, we were considered poor.

And my father was
disabled at 36 years old,

had been country
western musicians for a time,

but after they
became Adventist Christians,

they no longer,
of course, went out

and played in the nights clubs

and neither one had an education

beyond the eight grade so,

they just did
whatever work they could do,

and that's
usually with the hands.

So I was raised,
it was five children,

four boys and a girl
and my mother and father,

and I became a carpenter.

My brothers and
I, we had an uncle

who is a carpenter so,
during our younger years

we'd go with him on Sundays.

That's a very
honorable trade as you know.

Well I realize that now.

There was a very,
very famous carpenter.

Before 1984, in
Southern Illinois,

We had what a lot of

love in our family.

So my mom and dad loved Jesus

in a Christian home.

My mother became an Adventist

the year I was born.

She actually, three years before

that I was born in '51,
and '48 she contracted polio.

And she literally, her
arms and legs had drawn

and she couldn't walk.

The doctors came and they said,

you know, it's a
German, Jewish doctor,

named doctor
Galula, and he said,

we're going to have to take her
00:05:33.83\00:05:35.16
to Saint Louis
Barnes Jewish hospital.
00:05:35.20\00:05:37.17
And my father
said, he asked her,
00:05:37.20\00:05:38.90
how long will she be there?

He said, I don't know
if she'll ever come back.
00:05:40.30\00:05:41.87
My mother had been
studying the Adventist message.

The Bible message-- Yes.

For two years with an
uncle of mine Olan Shelton,

and Meldrin, and my aunt,

who had become
Seventh-day Adventist,

but she
wouldn't join the church,
00:05:52.41\00:05:54.12
because they were doing
their music in the night clubs,

and doing these things,
00:05:56.65\00:05:57.99
and she said we
have to make a living.

And here she's
suddenly down with polio.

The doctor comes
to the house says,

we're going to have to
send her to Saint Louis.

My mother says, she
hears it in the other room,

she manages to roll
of the bed in a position

and prayed,
Lord, if you'll heal me

I promise to never set
foot in another tavern,

I promise to become a Christian,

I will join the Adventist church

and I'll raise my
children to do so.

That's a big prayer.

She, she had, my uncle came

and brought the
Adventist pastor.

My father who
wasn't a Christian said

'cause those of
you who believe, pray.

They laid hands on
her, they prayed for her,

and the story goes that
within a matter of hours,

ambulance could get there

to take her to saint
Louis, her arms and legs,

the color came back,

her feet cleaning house

because she said my father

and the few
children that she had,

but I believe in
miracles today pastor Carter.

Yes, it's a miracle of God.

Because she lived a
long life after that,

angels' messages.

Well, you know,
it couldn't be done.

Well, with me, what happened,

my daughter and my

in an automobile accident.

charismatic
television stations and others.

And everywhere I'd go,
I'd say, Lord where are we

as Seventh-day
Adventists in the media?

The old saying is,
the farther you go,

And so one night I lay there,

and I had been
singing on these networks.

I came home, turned on a channel

I couldn't sleep,

to fuss about this

with the Lord for a while.

thought came to me,

night, early morning.

1984, I want you to build

a television station
that will reach the world

Three Angels' Messages.

One that would
counteract the counterfeit.

Now here is the
thing, I was a carpenter

with a high school education,
I wasn't a theologian,

I was an Adventist,
knew some of the doctrines,

but had no idea what undiluted
three angels' messages,

one that would counter act

I had no idea what that meant,

but I finally
said, do you what Lord?

One of the first places I came,
