Come to Genesis 1:27. 00:11:14.73\00:11:18.47 Genesis 1:27, Genesis 1:27, "So God." 00:11:18.50\00:11:26.06 Elohim, this is Yahweh Elohim. 00:11:26.09\00:11:30.25 Genesis 1:27, 00:11:30.28\00:11:31.81 "So God created man in his own image, 00:11:31.84\00:11:34.93 in the image of God he created him, 00:11:34.96\00:11:37.43 male and female he created them." 00:11:37.46\00:11:40.06 We are not the product of nothingness, 00:11:43.65\00:11:45.89 we came from the hand of God 00:11:45.92\00:11:47.79 and we were made in the image of God. 00:11:47.82\00:11:50.56 We are not related to the animals or trees. 00:11:50.59\00:11:58.30 Man is distinct and glorious 00:11:58.33\00:12:00.40 because only man was made in the image of God. 00:12:00.43\00:12:03.10 What is a soul worth? 00:13:55.08\00:14:00.49 Why do we have a culture of rudeness? 00:14:00.52\00:14:03.84 Whatever happened to civility 00:14:03.87\00:14:06.71 and good manners and respect? 00:14:06.74\00:14:11.34 But a man is simply a cosmic accident 00:14:11.37\00:14:15.96 than really he is a cosmic nothing. 00:14:15.99\00:14:21.09 But I suggest you today he is made in the image of God 00:14:21.12\00:14:26.43 and man is tremendously important. 00:14:26.46\00:14:28.87 Seeing hell, Jesus treated people, 00:14:31.67\00:14:36.88 they must have been worth a lot. 00:14:36.91\00:14:39.55 Come over here to John 8:1-11, John Chapter 8. 00:14:39.58\00:14:43.70 Aren't you're glad you're in church here today? 00:14:43.73\00:14:45.73 John 8:1-11, 00:14:45.76\00:14:48.30 "But Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives." 00:14:48.33\00:14:50.83 Been there many times. 00:14:50.86\00:14:52.56 "At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, 00:14:52.59\00:14:55.25 where all the people gathered around him, 00:14:55.28\00:14:57.22 and he sat down to teach them. 00:14:57.25\00:14:59.05 The teacher of the law and the Pharisees 00:14:59.08\00:15:00.98 brought in a woman caught in adultery. 00:15:01.01\00:15:03.59 They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, 00:15:03.62\00:15:06.14 'Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 00:15:06.17\00:15:09.30 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. 00:15:09.33\00:15:12.27 Now what do you say?' 00:15:12.30\00:15:14.16 They were using this question as a trap, 00:15:14.19\00:15:16.44 in order to have a basis for accusing him. 00:15:16.47\00:15:19.27 But Jesus bent down and started to write 00:15:19.30\00:15:21.23 on the ground with his finger. 00:15:21.26\00:15:22.84 When they kept on questioning him, 00:15:22.87\00:15:24.91 he straightened up and said to them, 00:15:24.94\00:15:26.48 'if any one of you is without sin, 00:15:26.51\00:15:28.31 let him be the first to throw a stone at her.' 00:15:28.34\00:15:31.07 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. 00:15:31.10\00:15:33.17 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, 00:15:33.20\00:15:36.97 the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, 00:15:37.00\00:15:39.74 with the woman still standing there. 00:15:39.77\00:15:41.62 Jesus straightened up and asked her, 00:15:41.65\00:15:43.75 'Woman where are they? 00:15:43.78\00:15:45.07 Has no one condemned you?' 00:15:45.10\00:15:46.52 'No one, sir, 'she said. 00:15:46.55\00:15:48.21 'Then neither do I condemn you, 'Jesus declared. 00:15:48.24\00:15:51.80 'Go now and leave your life of sin.' 00:15:51.83\00:15:56.83 " Look at me, he did not condemned her, 00:15:56.86\00:16:00.95 he did not damn her, 00:16:00.98\00:16:03.49 he did not even disfellowshipped her. 00:16:03.52\00:16:06.52 He forgave her and restored her 00:16:09.73\00:16:12.86 because she was more valuable, 00:16:12.89\00:16:15.81 worth more than a billion worlds in space. 00:16:15.84\00:16:22.49 Would you come over to Luke 15, Luke 15:11, 00:16:22.52\00:16:28.81 "Jesus continues, 'There was man who had two sons. 00:16:28.84\00:16:31.48 The younger one said to his father, Father, 00:16:31.51\00:16:34.06 give me my share of the estate. 00:16:34.09\00:16:36.19 So he divided his property between them. 00:16:36.22\00:16:38.88 Not long after that, 00:16:38.91\00:16:39.96 the younger son got together all he had, 00:16:39.99\00:16:42.24 set off to a distant country 00:16:42.27\00:16:44.07 and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 00:16:44.10\00:16:46.23 After he spent everything, there was a severe famine." 00:16:46.26\00:16:49.45 Verse 25, "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. 00:16:49.48\00:16:54.81 When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing." 00:16:54.84\00:16:57.36 Goodness. 00:16:57.39\00:16:58.42 "So he called one of the servants and asked him, 00:16:58.45\00:17:00.47 what was going on? 00:17:00.50\00:17:01.68 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 00:17:01.71\00:17:03.55 'and your father has killed the fattened calf 00:17:03.58\00:17:05.76 because he has him back safe and sound.' 00:17:05.79\00:17:08.30 The older brother became angry 00:17:08.33\00:17:11.52 and refused to go in. 00:17:11.55\00:17:12.86 so his father went out and pleaded with him. 00:17:12.89\00:17:15.19 But he answered his father, 'Look! 00:17:15.22\00:17:17.08 All these years I've been slaving for you 00:17:17.11\00:17:19.81 and never disobeyed your orders." 00:17:19.84\00:17:22.68 There you have salvation by works. 00:17:22.71\00:17:25.06 I've been slaving do, do, do, do cock-a-doodle-doo, 00:17:25.09\00:17:28.30 and you still don't love me. 00:17:28.33\00:17:30.55 "Yet you never gave me even a young goat 00:17:30.58\00:17:32.59 so I could celebrate with my friends. 00:17:32.62\00:17:34.97 But when this son of yours 00:17:35.00\00:17:38.08 who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home 00:17:38.11\00:17:41.67 you kill the fattened calf for him.' 00:17:41.70\00:17:45.08 He is also prodigal. 00:17:45.11\00:17:46.91 He is prodigal in meekness. 00:17:46.94\00:17:53.09 "My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, 00:17:53.12\00:17:58.98 everything I have is yours. 00:17:59.01\00:18:02.58 But we had to celebrate and be glad, 00:18:02.61\00:18:05.19 because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again. 00:18:05.22\00:18:11.43 He was lost and is found.' 00:18:11.46\00:18:16.78 " You have two types of sinners here. 00:18:16.81\00:18:19.00 The disrespectable sinner, 00:18:19.03\00:18:21.39 there people out in the world sleeping with the prostitutes, 00:18:21.42\00:18:24.10 and sleeping around. 00:18:24.13\00:18:26.09 But then there is the other class of sinner 00:18:26.12\00:18:28.78 and that's the elder brother and he is a respectable sinner, 00:18:28.81\00:18:32.07 he goes to church every Sabbath. 00:18:32.10\00:18:34.73 And everybody says, "What a great elder he is, 00:18:34.76\00:18:38.21 what a great person he is." 00:18:38.24\00:18:40.02 And he's slaving away. 00:18:44.73\00:18:46.80 But I would I remind you something, 00:18:46.83\00:18:51.23 God loved both sons 00:18:51.26\00:18:55.65 and He treated both sons with respect, 00:18:55.68\00:19:00.28 love and compassion. 00:19:00.31\00:19:03.60 Why, because they were good? 00:19:03.63\00:19:08.22 No, because a soul is more important than the world. 00:19:08.26\00:19:14.09 One person, 00:19:14.12\00:19:15.49 time will fell me today 00:19:19.65\00:19:23.66 to tell of Peter the denyer, 00:19:23.69\00:19:28.57 presumptuous a man who run his mouth. 00:19:28.60\00:19:33.13 Have you met people like that? 00:19:33.16\00:19:35.87 All grunts and no bacon. 00:19:35.90\00:19:40.27 All thunder and no rain. 00:19:40.30\00:19:44.82 Always talking but not doing 00:19:44.85\00:19:50.85 and he denied the Lord of glory. 00:19:50.88\00:19:54.77 But Jesus sent a message through the angel, 00:19:54.80\00:19:57.86 "go tell my disciples and Peter." 00:19:57.89\00:20:03.77 Why, because of the worth of a soul. 00:20:03.80\00:20:06.87 There was Thomas the doubter who said 00:20:06.90\00:20:08.68 "unless I can see the nail prints 00:20:08.71\00:20:11.81 and see the mark in the side I will not believe." 00:20:11.84\00:20:17.31 And Jesus did not cast him aside even though he had doubts 00:20:17.34\00:20:21.20 because the doubter is a soul 00:20:24.90\00:20:27.72 worth more than the world. 00:20:27.75\00:20:31.44 Then there is the remarkable story 00:20:31.47\00:20:34.19 of the woman in the big crowd with the issue of blood. 00:20:34.22\00:20:38.30 Lately she had cancer 00:20:38.33\00:20:41.37 and she had been bleeding for years 00:20:41.40\00:20:43.78 and she came to see Jesus with hope burning in her breast. 00:20:43.81\00:20:49.78 Because hope burns eternal in the human heart. 00:20:49.81\00:20:55.15 And as Jesus went by He reached out a trembling finger 00:20:55.18\00:20:59.02 and touched Him and Jesus turned around and said, 00:20:59.05\00:21:03.16 "Who touched me?" 00:21:03.19\00:21:06.44 The disciples logically said, "Everybody is touching You." 00:21:06.47\00:21:11.14 But He said no, some one has touched me." 00:21:11.17\00:21:14.10 He could tell the difference between an idle touch 00:21:14.13\00:21:18.02 and touch of faith. 00:21:18.05\00:21:21.36 She came and fell at His feet and He said, 00:21:21.39\00:21:23.83 "your faith has saved you, you're healed go in peace." 00:21:23.86\00:21:28.52 Why did He treated this way? 00:21:28.55\00:21:30.33 Why didn't He just say, I'm busy? 00:21:30.36\00:21:34.98 Because, she is a soul. 00:21:35.01\00:21:38.18 And then there is another story, 00:21:38.21\00:21:39.47 the story that gives hope to the leader of the IRS. 00:21:39.50\00:21:44.72 The Internal Revenue Service, 00:21:47.63\00:21:49.64 as it is affectionately called here in the United States. 00:21:49.67\00:21:53.74 It tells when Jesus was out one day 00:21:53.77\00:21:56.34 and the leader of the tax collectors 00:21:56.37\00:21:58.93 was up in a tree. 00:21:58.96\00:22:01.54 He wanted to see Jesus. 00:22:01.57\00:22:03.00 He was little man. 00:22:03.03\00:22:04.25 And Jesus said to him, "Zacchaeus, you come down 00:22:04.28\00:22:08.08 because I'm going to your house today." 00:22:08.11\00:22:10.87 How did He know his name? 00:22:10.90\00:22:14.34 He knew his name a man in a tree, 00:22:14.37\00:22:17.38 He knew his name. 00:22:17.41\00:22:18.48 Because there is nothing more precious than a soul, 00:22:21.54\00:22:26.64 nothing more precious. 00:22:26.67\00:22:28.21 Listen to this, people matter most, 00:22:28.24\00:22:33.82 not grand institutions, not this building, 00:22:33.85\00:22:40.54 not powerful organizations, not material positions, 00:22:40.57\00:22:45.90 America, not houses, lands and gadgets. 00:22:45.93\00:22:52.35 The most important thing in the universe is a soul. 00:22:56.23\00:23:02.04 Next, if people matter most-- 00:23:02.07\00:23:07.23 what is the most important thing 00:23:07.26\00:23:12.21 that I can do with my life? 00:23:12.24\00:23:15.71 Alma, we're so delighted 00:23:24.27\00:23:25.88 to have you here in our church today. 00:23:25.91\00:23:27.94 You've been a member of this congregation 00:23:27.97\00:23:30.24 from many years we appreciate and love you. 00:23:30.27\00:23:33.26 What is your profession, Alma? 00:23:33.29\00:23:35.16 I'm an actress and a filmmaker. 00:23:35.19\00:23:38.40 Tell me some of the shows that you've been in? 00:23:38.43\00:23:42.98 In Living Color, television shows, 00:23:43.01\00:23:44.73 Touched by an Angel, ER and films were Mo' Money, 00:23:44.76\00:23:49.30 The Other Sister. 00:23:49.33\00:23:50.52 Now there're been certain great African Americans, 00:23:50.55\00:23:55.47 who've had a profound impact around the world, 00:23:55.50\00:23:57.67 tell me about some African Americans 00:23:57.70\00:24:00.67 who have influenced you touched your life? 00:24:00.70\00:24:03.40 There's been quite a few, Pastor Carter, 00:24:03.43\00:24:05.18 to name a few Frederick Douglass, 00:24:05.21\00:24:07.51 George Washington Carver. 00:24:07.54\00:24:08.96 And of course I have to always mention my parents 00:24:08.99\00:24:11.07 Bonnie McBrown and Willie Dixon they were my biggest mentors. 00:24:11.10\00:24:15.38 But the one that really touched me 00:24:15.41\00:24:19.43 with her story was Harriet Tubman. 00:24:19.46\00:24:21.83 She was one of the most inspirational figures 00:24:21.86\00:24:24.79 not only African American history 00:24:24.82\00:24:26.65 but in history, world history itself. 00:24:26.68\00:24:29.13 She was born back in the 1800s to Harriet Green and Ben Ross. 00:24:29.16\00:24:34.82 And they-- her birth name was Araminta Ross. 00:24:34.85\00:24:39.54 And she made her life passion to free slaves 00:24:39.57\00:24:43.17 from the tyrannous slavery. 00:24:43.20\00:24:45.36 And her early years in slavery 00:24:45.39\00:24:47.40 she was regularly beaten by her master. 00:24:47.43\00:24:50.40 She was beaten so severely one time 00:24:50.44\00:24:51.92 her master threw a heavy metal object 00:24:51.95\00:24:54.46 which hit her in the head 00:24:54.49\00:24:55.52 and she had a scar for the rest of her life. 00:24:55.55\00:24:57.82 And it created debilitating circumstances for her. 00:24:57.85\00:25:02.70 She had epileptic seizures and bad nightmares 00:25:02.73\00:25:08.81 and visions because of that. 00:25:08.84\00:25:11.23 Early on she got married to John Harbet. 00:25:11.26\00:25:17.46 Back then it was not uncommon for this 00:25:17.49\00:25:20.54 to be considered a mixed marriage, 00:25:20.57\00:25:23.06 not because he was a white man but because he was a freeman 00:25:23.09\00:25:26.31 and she was still a slave. 00:25:26.34\00:25:27.72 So they consider that a mixed marriage. 00:25:27.75\00:25:29.75 And so she was able to really save thousands of souls 00:25:29.78\00:25:33.60 and deliver them from the curse of slavery. 00:25:33.63\00:25:38.91 Tell me about the man, they've even called him 00:25:38.94\00:25:43.48 I think the "Peanut King" because what he did with a 00:25:43.51\00:25:47.21 humble little peanut. 00:25:47.24\00:25:50.10 Oh, yes, George Washington Carver, 00:25:50.13\00:25:53.24 who also knew Harriet Tubman, they met along the way. 00:25:53.27\00:25:57.12 Getting back to Harriet Tubman though, Pastor Carter, 00:25:57.15\00:25:59.79 she got involved with the underground railroad. 00:25:59.82\00:26:02.59 And she got involved with that through William still 00:26:02.62\00:26:04.76 who introduced to her in Pennsylvania 00:26:04.79\00:26:06.79 where she made her way over there. 00:26:06.82\00:26:08.43 And through her trips she actually freed 300 slaves. 00:26:08.46\00:26:13.17 And each time she went back to the plantation 00:26:13.20\00:26:15.24 where she was a slave, she put her life on the line. 00:26:15.27\00:26:18.05 Yes. 00:26:18.08\00:26:19.11 But she-- she says she was told by God that 00:26:19.14\00:26:22.85 this was her duty to free slaves. 00:26:22.88\00:26:24.78 And she say, as long as I live this is what I'm gonna do 00:26:24.81\00:26:27.79 and she did that to her till dying day 00:26:27.82\00:26:30.03 in 1930 at 93 years of age. 00:26:30.06\00:26:34.08 What a saint? 00:26:34.11\00:26:36.42 Alma, what does Jesus mean to you personally? 00:26:36.45\00:26:40.36 You know, growing up my patents who always in church 00:26:40.39\00:26:43.08 especially my mom always sent us to church, 00:26:43.11\00:26:45.99 every weekend. 00:26:46.02\00:26:49.98 You'll hear about Jesus and you'll hear about God 00:26:50.01\00:26:52.61 and sometimes as a child it does really you know 00:26:52.64\00:26:56.01 kind of like within two years psyche would that means. 00:26:56.04\00:26:59.60 So I really understood what that meant as an adult. 00:26:59.63\00:27:05.47 And I'm not trying to give you a kudos but 00:27:05.50\00:27:08.33 I really understood it when I came to one of your meetings 00:27:08.36\00:27:10.62 before I've became a true Christian 00:27:10.65\00:27:13.74 and understood it through the archaeology 00:27:13.77\00:27:15.82 of how we got here and everything. 00:27:15.85\00:27:18.38 And for me because my mother did die 00:27:18.41\00:27:21.24 when I was young and all I have left 00:27:21.27\00:27:24.16 because I was really closed to my mom 00:27:24.19\00:27:25.61 so all I have left was the Bible 00:27:25.64\00:27:27.63 to really hold on to really start reading it. 00:27:27.66\00:27:30.08 And then come in to really understand the Bible 00:27:30.11\00:27:31.78 more through some of your programs. 00:27:31.81\00:27:34.76 Jesus Christ I honestly, I don't-- 00:27:34.79\00:27:39.30 I really don't know how people can make in life 00:27:39.33\00:27:41.59 without having Christ in their life 00:27:41.62\00:27:43.18 because it's such a rough roll life. 00:27:43.21\00:27:46.28 And if I didn't have Christ in my life 00:27:46.31\00:27:48.24 I really don't think I would be stand here right now. 00:27:48.27\00:27:52.22 Alma, we love you and we appreciate your testimony 00:27:52.25\00:27:56.55 and thank God for you. 00:27:56.58\00:27:58.38 And so many people like you in this country 00:27:58.41\00:28:00.94 who make this place, this world a better place, 00:28:00.97\00:28:04.11 God bless you, Alma.
