From Arcadia, California, the Carter report presents 00:00:08.19\00:00:11.22 "The Living Word" around the world. 00:00:11.25\00:00:13.50 Hello, friend, I'm John Carter. 00:00:19.20\00:00:21.00 Welcome to the Carter report. And we got a show for you today. 00:00:21.03\00:00:26.86 We are going to talk about 00:00:26.89\00:00:28.89 "the glory of God 00:00:28.92\00:00:31.44 and making sense of our incredible universe" 00:00:31.47\00:00:35.22 we have two distinguish guests with us, 00:00:35.25\00:00:38.45 both eminent scientists, 00:00:38.48\00:00:41.15 Dr. Hugh Ross and also Dr. Fazale Rana, 00:00:41.18\00:00:45.96 they both come to us from Reasons to Believe 00:00:45.99\00:00:48.76 here in Southern California. 00:00:48.79\00:00:50.71 Welcome to the program. 00:00:50.74\00:00:52.82 Jesus said, "Go into all the world 00:00:56.11\00:00:58.52 and make disciples of all nations, 00:00:58.55\00:01:00.75 baptizing them in the name of the Father, 00:01:00.78\00:01:02.83 Son, and Holy Spirit." 00:01:02.86\00:01:04.69 The Carter Report team has therefore 00:01:04.72\00:01:07.13 accepted the challenge of worldwide evangelism. 00:01:07.16\00:01:10.26 Million in Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, 00:01:10.29\00:01:13.66 Africa, India, Australia, the United States, 00:01:13.69\00:01:17.45 and the Isles of the Sea 00:01:17.48\00:01:19.20 have heard the good news of Christ. 00:01:19.23\00:01:21.38 As John Carter has proclaimed God's Living Word. 00:01:21.41\00:01:25.03 You are invited to be a part of the Carter team 00:01:25.06\00:01:28.36 by praying and by giving and when God calls by going. 00:01:28.39\00:01:32.42 Write a note now to Pastor John Carter. 00:01:32.45\00:01:35.53 PO Box 1900, Thousand Oaks, California 91358 00:01:35.56\00:01:41.61 or to PO Box 861, Terrigal, 00:01:41.64\00:01:45.22 NSW 2260, Australia. 00:01:45.25\00:01:49.70 Jesus said, "With God all things are possible." 00:01:49.73\00:01:54.05 Our program today is 00:01:58.32\00:01:59.79 "Making Sense of Our Incredible Universe and the glory of God." 00:01:59.82\00:02:05.65 We have with us two great scientists Dr. Ross. 00:02:05.68\00:02:09.54 Welcome today from Reasons to Believe. 00:02:09.57\00:02:11.48 We are glad that you joined us. 00:02:11.51\00:02:13.32 It's a privilege for us to have you with us 00:02:13.35\00:02:15.48 and the same to you Dr. Rana. Thank you for inviting me. 00:02:15.51\00:02:18.86 You are a biologist, why is a biologist 00:02:18.89\00:02:22.65 also interested in astronomy because you are. 00:02:22.68\00:02:25.93 Well, you know astronomy is the study of universe 00:02:25.96\00:02:28.80 and life exists within the universe 00:02:28.83\00:02:31.43 and it's interesting that astronomers have discovered 00:02:31.46\00:02:34.53 that the universe has to be exquisitely fine-tuned, 00:02:34.56\00:02:37.59 very carefully put together for life to be possible. 00:02:37.62\00:02:41.34 But also evolutionary biologist claim that life 00:02:41.37\00:02:44.93 which is so elegant in its designs 00:02:44.96\00:02:47.49 emerge through evolutionary processes 00:02:47.52\00:02:50.10 and one way that we can critically evaluate that idea 00:02:50.13\00:02:53.56 is to look at-- when does life originate. 00:02:53.59\00:02:57.49 What are the resources available to it, 00:02:57.52\00:03:00.55 to life when it originates. 00:03:00.58\00:03:02.55 You know, so in another words, 00:03:02.58\00:03:03.73 life's history is in the context 00:03:03.76\00:03:05.97 of the universe's history. Yes, yes. 00:03:06.00\00:03:10.02 How did you get interested Hugh in astronomy, 00:03:10.05\00:03:13.31 because you are great astronomer, 00:03:13.34\00:03:15.64 you have done lot of work down at Caltech, 00:03:15.67\00:03:19.29 one of the great universities in the world. 00:03:19.32\00:03:21.98 What drove you to become an astronomer? 00:03:22.01\00:03:24.64 Well, my parents say that I was a born scientist, 00:03:24.67\00:03:27.67 I had this innate curiosity, 00:03:27.70\00:03:29.40 I was doing experiments when I was a toddler. 00:03:29.43\00:03:31.62 You were? Yes. 00:03:31.65\00:03:32.68 Just a little guy. 00:03:32.71\00:03:33.74 Just a little guy almost burned down 00:03:33.77\00:03:35.59 my grandmother's house in the process, 00:03:35.62\00:03:37.50 so got into lot of trouble. 00:03:37.53\00:03:39.92 But I was at age seven, that I really got fascinated 00:03:39.95\00:03:42.66 about stars and galaxies 00:03:42.69\00:03:44.64 and I was reading everything that I can find on them. 00:03:44.67\00:03:46.64 I knew from the age of eight 00:03:46.67\00:03:47.89 that astrophysics would be my future career. 00:03:47.92\00:03:50.31 Kind of amazing you must have been called to do this? 00:03:50.34\00:03:53.44 I think so, I mean I just had to know 00:03:53.47\00:03:56.32 what was going on in the universe 00:03:56.35\00:03:58.61 and every year I would study 00:03:58.64\00:04:01.15 a different discipline of astronomy. 00:04:01.18\00:04:03.75 And that's what kind of led me to give my life to Christ. 00:04:03.78\00:04:07.00 And so, both of you men 00:04:07.03\00:04:10.44 you deal with the same subject but at the opposite extremes. 00:04:10.47\00:04:15.88 You are into biology, you talk about the cell, 00:04:15.91\00:04:18.94 which is incredibly small and incredibly complex. 00:04:18.97\00:04:23.00 And you deal with the universe 00:04:23.03\00:04:24.77 which is incredibly large and incredibly complex. 00:04:24.80\00:04:30.52 Just tell me, the complexity of a cell. 00:04:30.55\00:04:36.53 How complex is a cell? 00:04:36.56\00:04:39.13 Well, the analogy that I like to use 00:04:39.16\00:04:42.23 particularly to somebody who doesn't have 00:04:42.26\00:04:43.96 a lot of familiarity with biological system. Like me. 00:04:43.99\00:04:47.79 Would be a city, a cell is like a city, 00:04:47.82\00:04:50.40 it's an incredibly complex system. 00:04:50.43\00:04:53.09 We have molecules that are carrying out 00:04:53.12\00:04:55.59 all kinds of different processes 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.11 and those processes are network together 00:04:57.14\00:04:59.65 and each process is contributing 00:04:59.68\00:05:01.62 to the overall benefit of the cell. 00:05:01.65\00:05:04.18 There are systems that are generating energy, 00:05:04.21\00:05:06.74 systems that are like assembly lines 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.66 making molecules and machines. 00:05:08.69\00:05:11.82 Molecular level machines in the cell 00:05:11.85\00:05:13.62 that are carrying out operations, 00:05:13.65\00:05:15.31 there is a control center. 00:05:15.34\00:05:16.66 And so when you see the complexity of a single cell, 00:05:16.69\00:05:21.64 you used it on one of our programs 00:05:21.67\00:05:24.60 an analogy is like Los Angeles. Yes. 00:05:24.63\00:05:26.86 And you said it's better organized. 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.16 It's better organized 00:05:29.19\00:05:30.22 especially the trash trucks are better organized. 00:05:30.25\00:05:33.61 And not so many pot holes. 00:05:33.64\00:05:35.38 And but you do have freeways and everything don't you. 00:05:35.41\00:05:37.81 Yeah, there is these highway systems inside the cell 00:05:37.84\00:05:40.66 that are track ways that molecules will walk along 00:05:40.69\00:05:44.14 and move along carrying cargo 00:05:44.17\00:05:46.89 from one place to the other in cell, 00:05:46.92\00:05:49.14 these are called molecular motors 00:05:49.17\00:05:50.56 or molecular machines that carry out these processes. 00:05:50.59\00:05:54.56 Tiny they are so small so small, so complex 00:05:54.59\00:05:59.47 and we are told by some cleaver people 00:05:59.50\00:06:03.88 that they sort of self originated. 00:06:03.91\00:06:06.46 Yeah, and that's to me, very, very difficult to accept. 00:06:06.49\00:06:09.84 Hard for me to believe this. 00:06:09.87\00:06:11.04 I'm highly skeptical because when you look 00:06:11.07\00:06:13.06 at the scientific explanations 00:06:13.09\00:06:16.01 for how life comes from non-life. 00:06:16.04\00:06:18.75 Those explanations leave a lot to be desired. 00:06:18.78\00:06:21.65 They are lacking robustness. 00:06:21.68\00:06:24.32 They don't have strong support. 00:06:24.35\00:06:27.55 So, atheistic evolution 00:06:27.58\00:06:29.37 that says that life came from non-life 00:06:29.40\00:06:33.51 in relatively short period of time, relatively. 00:06:33.54\00:06:36.37 Yes. It seems absurd. 00:06:36.40\00:06:39.44 What astronomy tells us is that we don't even have 00:06:39.47\00:06:41.75 the building blocks and the life originates 00:06:41.78\00:06:44.54 on planet earth in a short window of time. 00:06:44.57\00:06:47.01 But the basic building blocks you need are there 00:06:47.04\00:06:49.76 but physics says they're not allowed to be there. 00:06:49.79\00:06:52.42 And so you are very comfortable 00:06:52.45\00:06:54.39 as scientist with faith in the Bible. Yes. 00:06:54.42\00:07:00.21 What would say to a young guy or a young girl 00:07:00.24\00:07:02.95 and they have gone to hear Professor Richard Dawkins 00:07:02.98\00:07:06.32 or somebody like this at Oxford University 00:07:06.35\00:07:09.21 or one of some other great university. 00:07:09.24\00:07:12.25 And they told this no God because we don't need Him. 00:07:12.28\00:07:16.22 I heard one famous man say recently, 00:07:16.25\00:07:19.70 he said well, it's not a case of talking about God, 00:07:19.73\00:07:22.03 we don't need Him. He doesn't exist. 00:07:22.06\00:07:26.40 What would you say to a young person? 00:07:26.43\00:07:28.87 What would you say? 00:07:28.90\00:07:30.95 Ah, often times I think people who take that position, 00:07:30.98\00:07:34.19 who are atheists, who are agnostics 00:07:34.22\00:07:37.21 that deny the existence of God 00:07:37.24\00:07:39.28 or are not convinced that God exists 00:07:39.31\00:07:42.08 are really operating with other reasons 00:07:42.11\00:07:45.74 that are motivating that position 00:07:45.77\00:07:47.35 and they try to use science 00:07:47.38\00:07:48.97 as a way to justify their atheism. Yes, yes. 00:07:49.00\00:07:52.28 And it's almost the philosophical commitment 00:07:52.31\00:07:54.31 ahead of time to an atheistic worldview 00:07:54.34\00:07:57.22 and then everything in nature is viewed from that perspective. 00:07:57.25\00:08:00.67 So thinking doesn't happen in a vacuum, does it? 00:08:00.70\00:08:03.37 No, it doesn't. 00:08:03.40\00:08:04.43 Now, there are many, many factors 00:08:04.46\00:08:05.73 where people take certain view points, 00:08:05.76\00:08:08.19 theological or scientific. 00:08:08.22\00:08:12.39 How big now, we know a cell is very, very small. 00:08:12.42\00:08:16.70 How big is the universe? 00:08:16.73\00:08:18.39 Well, thanks to the Hubble Space Telescope, 00:08:18.42\00:08:20.62 we know that the observable universe. 00:08:20.65\00:08:23.22 It's a universe that we can see 00:08:23.25\00:08:25.44 and theoretically see it contains about 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.47 two hundred billion medium and large galaxies. 00:08:27.50\00:08:33.17 Two hundred thousand million? 00:08:33.20\00:08:36.69 Yes. Two hundred billion. 00:08:36.72\00:08:38.67 Right. Galaxies. 00:08:38.70\00:08:40.25 Where each galaxy contains about 200 billion stars. 00:08:40.28\00:08:45.37 So we are looking in above 50 billion trillion stars 00:08:45.40\00:08:48.15 total if we add in all-- How many stars again? 00:08:48.18\00:08:50.82 50 billion trillion stars in the observable universe. 00:08:50.85\00:08:53.88 50 billion trillion stars? Right. 00:08:53.91\00:08:55.94 And then you got other stuff out there too 00:08:55.97\00:08:57.66 like comets, black holes. 00:08:57.69\00:09:00.78 But black holes are not black holes 00:09:00.81\00:09:02.58 usually the very center of the galaxy. 00:09:02.61\00:09:05.07 They can be the big ones are, 00:09:05.10\00:09:06.80 there are also smaller black holes 00:09:06.83\00:09:08.38 that are scattered throughout the galaxy 00:09:08.41\00:09:10.00 and they are basically burnt out stars. 00:09:10.03\00:09:12.62 And when a big star burns out, it will leave a black hole. 00:09:12.65\00:09:15.72 Because it collapses upon itself. Right. 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.53 Everything falls in. 00:09:18.56\00:09:20.02 And then black holes can merge together 00:09:20.05\00:09:21.74 to make bigger black holes 00:09:21.77\00:09:23.17 that's how you get the super giant black holes. 00:09:23.20\00:09:25.65 Now, in the Milky Way system that we can see every night 00:09:25.68\00:09:30.05 except if you live in Los Angeles. 00:09:30.08\00:09:32.86 In the Milky Way system, 00:09:32.89\00:09:36.40 is it not true that at the center of our system, 00:09:36.43\00:09:39.36 which has what two hundred billion stars or something? 00:09:39.39\00:09:42.18 It's above 400 billion stars now. 00:09:42.21\00:09:43.72 It's gone up now. It's gone up a bit. 00:09:43.75\00:09:45.80 I need to keep my reading up to date, 400 billion stars. 00:09:45.83\00:09:48.99 There is a black hole in the center. Yes. 00:09:49.02\00:09:51.72 And everything goes around that? 00:09:51.75\00:09:54.02 Yes, and it is consuming mass at a very slow rate. 00:09:54.05\00:09:58.04 It's about three million times a mass of our star, the sun. 00:09:58.07\00:10:01.58 How far is planet earth from this uncomfortable black hole? 00:10:01.61\00:10:06.45 Because if we got close to the black hole 00:10:06.48\00:10:09.10 is it not true we'd go in, we'd be sucked in? 00:10:09.13\00:10:12.01 If we got very close. How close? 00:10:12.04\00:10:14.45 Well, I mean-- Close enough. 00:10:14.48\00:10:17.05 If we go within a few trillion miles you would be in trouble. 00:10:17.08\00:10:19.35 Within a few trillion miles? Yeah. 00:10:19.38\00:10:20.96 That's close. That's close. 00:10:20.99\00:10:22.38 It means that the universe is somewhat very big, isn't it? 00:10:22.41\00:10:24.87 A lot bigger than that, 00:10:24.90\00:10:25.93 a light year is six trillion miles. 00:10:25.96\00:10:28.04 So how far are we from the center of the universe 00:10:28.07\00:10:31.38 of our galaxy the center from this black hole? 00:10:31.41\00:10:35.31 We are about, you know, 27,000 light years 00:10:35.34\00:10:39.07 away from the center of the black hole. 00:10:39.10\00:10:41.43 So we are safe distance away. 00:10:41.46\00:10:46.04 Is it true that we are strategically placed? 00:10:46.07\00:10:51.21 Yes, we are. 00:10:51.24\00:10:52.82 We're at distance from the center of the galaxy 00:10:52.85\00:10:56.54 where the spiral arm structure rotates at the same rate 00:10:56.57\00:11:00.44 that the sun revolves around the center of the galaxy, 00:11:00.47\00:11:03.74 which means that we cross spiral arms 00:11:03.77\00:11:06.07 only about once every billion years. 00:11:06.10\00:11:08.81 And right now, we are a half way 00:11:08.84\00:11:10.33 between one spiral arm crossing and the next 00:11:10.36\00:11:14.18 and that's a safe zone for advanced life. 00:11:14.21\00:11:17.00 and if you are bacterium 00:11:17.03\00:11:18.35 you can handle crossing a spiral arm, 00:11:18.38\00:11:20.66 but if you are an advanced life form, 00:11:20.69\00:11:22.48 you don't want to be at that time. 00:11:22.51\00:11:24.98 Also to if we were in another place 00:11:25.01\00:11:28.90 would we be exposed to excessive amounts of radiation? 00:11:28.93\00:11:34.00 That's true, if you are closer to the center of the galaxy 00:11:34.03\00:11:36.70 you'd be exposed to radiation. 00:11:36.73\00:11:38.33 If you are close to spiral arm, 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.01 you will be exposed to deadly radiation, 00:11:40.04\00:11:42.44 but if you are too far away from the center, 00:11:42.47\00:11:44.77 you will not have the elements you need to make life 00:11:44.80\00:11:48.18 and so we are at the exact spot within the universe 00:11:48.21\00:11:52.01 where advanced life is possible 00:11:52.04\00:11:54.16 and that same spot is the only spot in our galaxy 00:11:54.19\00:11:57.51 we actually get to see outside of our galaxy. 00:11:57.54\00:12:00.47 Now, let's break this down. 00:12:00.50\00:12:02.79 We are at a spot in the universe 00:12:02.82\00:12:04.40 where we are safe from the spiral arms, 00:12:04.43\00:12:08.15 we are safe from excessive amounts of radiation, 00:12:08.18\00:12:12.44 but you are saying we are in a spot we can see out, 00:12:12.47\00:12:15.23 what does that mean? 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.64 Well, there is only one location in our galaxy 00:12:16.67\00:12:19.52 where we actually get to see 00:12:19.55\00:12:21.10 the entire observable extend of the universe. 00:12:21.13\00:12:24.02 It actually be able to directly observe 00:12:24.05\00:12:26.11 the cosmic creation event, 00:12:26.14\00:12:28.08 but to somewhere else in the galaxy 00:12:28.11\00:12:30.10 there will be too much light illuminating our sky. 00:12:30.13\00:12:32.88 It's like driving into the sun. 00:12:32.91\00:12:35.43 If we are in a spot where, 00:12:35.46\00:12:37.83 we weren't in a dark spot. Right. 00:12:37.86\00:12:41.57 If we were in a bright spot 00:12:41.60\00:12:42.97 it will be difficult to see at it, is it? 00:12:43.00\00:12:44.64 Other way to burn it is, 00:12:44.67\00:12:45.70 we are living in the darkest life 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.47 conceivable location in our galaxy 00:12:47.50\00:12:50.17 and it's because we are in that darkest possible spot, 00:12:50.20\00:12:53.14 we can see the entirety of the history of universe 00:12:53.17\00:12:56.64 and actually read the whole story book of the universe. 00:12:56.67\00:12:59.78 So we can see the cosmic story from planet earth? 00:12:59.81\00:13:03.39 From planet earth we can see the story 00:13:03.42\00:13:05.46 from the very beginning of the creation of the universe 00:13:05.49\00:13:08.40 right up to the present moment. 00:13:08.43\00:13:10.01 But we couldn't see this if we were popped in some other place? 00:13:10.04\00:13:13.37 Or we were at a different time. 00:13:13.40\00:13:15.11 If we were put here any earlier, we would only be seeing 00:13:15.14\00:13:17.93 a portion of a history of the universe. 00:13:17.96\00:13:20.50 Likewise we were put here any later, 00:13:20.53\00:13:22.39 we only be seeing a portion of the history of the universe. 00:13:22.42\00:13:25.50 What does that-- what does that tell you Fazale? 00:13:25.53\00:13:28.31 Well, to me it says 00:13:28.34\00:13:30.31 that there is an incredible design in the universe 00:13:30.34\00:13:32.82 that there is a purpose to the universe 00:13:32.85\00:13:34.85 and the purpose to human life. 00:13:34.88\00:13:36.47 So this could not have happened by itself? 00:13:36.50\00:13:39.64 Or God wanted us to read the whole book 00:13:39.67\00:13:41.84 from start to finish. Yes, yes. 00:13:41.87\00:13:43.71 And there is only one spot 00:13:43.74\00:13:44.94 and one time where we can read the whole book. 00:13:44.97\00:13:47.29 What an incredible truth, what an incredible observation. 00:13:47.32\00:13:51.64 We are at a spot in the cosmos 00:13:51.67\00:13:54.47 where we can look at and look back through time. 00:13:54.50\00:13:58.32 We are in a place where we are protected 00:13:58.35\00:14:00.95 so whether you go from the smallest to the biggest, 00:14:00.98\00:14:04.29 it seems to be that there is a guiding hand 00:14:04.32\00:14:11.06 and a great mind that has planned it all. 00:14:11.09\00:14:15.04 So it's pretty hard to be an atheist 00:14:15.07\00:14:18.36 or even an agnostic and believe this stuff. 00:14:18.39\00:14:22.74 Well, the heavens declare the glory of God. 00:14:22.77\00:14:24.88 They declare His righteousness 00:14:24.91\00:14:26.52 and God want us to see all that glory and righteousness. 00:14:26.55\00:14:30.68 We will be back after this short break. 00:14:30.71\00:14:33.78 We are talking about how big is the universe. 00:14:33.81\00:14:37.44 We are talking about the evolutionary idea. 00:14:37.47\00:14:40.63 We are talking about the great God who made the stars. 00:14:40.66\00:14:44.74 We have two great scientists with us. 00:14:44.77\00:14:47.32 We will be back in a moment. 00:14:47.35\00:14:49.07 Hello friend, I am John Carter in Colombia. 00:14:53.08\00:14:57.63 Behind me is the great city of Bogota, 00:14:57.66\00:15:00.52 the capital of this amazing country. 00:15:00.55\00:15:04.53 This city is a city of more than eight million souls. 00:15:04.56\00:15:10.95 It's up more than 8,000 feet in the Andes. 00:15:10.98\00:15:16.14 And we've come here today with one purpose in mind 00:15:16.17\00:15:19.87 to preach the everlasting gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:15:19.90\00:15:24.73 We are here because we have a commission from God. 00:15:24.76\00:15:28.70 Jesus said, "Go into all the world 00:15:28.73\00:15:32.32 and preach the everlasting gospel, 00:15:32.35\00:15:34.97 baptizing them in the name of the Father, 00:15:35.00\00:15:37.48 and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." 00:15:37.51\00:15:40.90 The people here need the Gospel of Christ. 00:15:40.93\00:15:45.08 And I am asking you today come with us, 00:15:45.11\00:15:47.57 if not in body but come with us in spirit. 00:15:47.60\00:15:51.57 This has been a very, very dangerous city. 00:15:51.60\00:15:54.67 A very dangerous part of the world, 00:15:54.70\00:15:57.38 but we believe that we are safe 00:15:57.41\00:15:59.86 when we are in the hands of God. 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.49 Therefore I am beseeching you in the name of Christ 00:16:02.52\00:16:06.36 and in the names of these eight million plus 00:16:06.39\00:16:09.98 inhabitants in the city of Bogota 00:16:10.01\00:16:13.62 to come and help us to preach the word of God. 00:16:13.65\00:16:16.98 Please support the preaching of the word of God in Columbia. 00:16:17.01\00:16:21.27 Please write to me, John Carter, PO Box 1900, 00:16:21.30\00:16:26.06 Thousand Oaks, California, 91358. 00:16:26.09\00:16:29.85 In Australia, write to me at the address, 00:16:29.88\00:16:32.92 Terrigal, New South Wales, Australia. 00:16:32.95\00:16:36.83 Jesus said, "Work while it is day 00:16:36.86\00:16:40.19 the night is coming when no man can work." 00:16:40.22\00:16:43.63 Please write to me today. 00:16:43.66\00:16:45.87 Thank you, and God bless you. 00:16:45.90\00:16:48.02 Welcome back. 00:16:54.98\00:16:56.01 We are talking to Dr. Hugh Ross 00:16:56.04\00:16:57.50 and also Dr. Fazale Rana, two eminent scientists. 00:16:57.53\00:17:02.16 And we are talking about making sense of the universe. 00:17:02.19\00:17:07.77 You were describing the vastness of the universe. 00:17:07.80\00:17:11.91 Now you have--you got your doctorate in astronomy. 00:17:11.94\00:17:15.34 Got your doctorate in biology. 00:17:15.37\00:17:18.11 You both come at the-- 00:17:18.14\00:17:20.37 at the subject from different poles from extremes. 00:17:20.40\00:17:24.42 You come from the very smallest, you come from the very biggest. 00:17:24.45\00:17:29.26 We talked a little moment ago 00:17:29.29\00:17:31.26 about the complexity of the single cell 00:17:31.29\00:17:34.97 and how it seems utterly incomprehensible 00:17:35.00\00:17:37.32 that a cell could have made itself. 00:17:37.35\00:17:39.95 I think it absurd 00:17:39.98\00:17:41.25 for people to think that cells can make a cell. 00:17:41.28\00:17:43.67 Now we are talking about the universe, 00:17:43.70\00:17:46.99 talk to me and we've discussed this in other occasions, 00:17:47.02\00:17:49.90 but for the sake of people who are just tuning in now. 00:17:49.93\00:17:53.36 Talk to me about the Big Bang, the Big Bang Theory 00:17:53.39\00:17:57.78 and its relationship to Genesis Chapter 1. 00:17:57.81\00:18:01.22 Genesis 1 in the beginning 00:18:01.25\00:18:02.81 God created the heavens and the earth. 00:18:02.84\00:18:05.83 That phrase, the heavens and the earth 00:18:05.86\00:18:07.87 means the entire universe. It's the cosmos. 00:18:07.90\00:18:10.58 It's the cosmos. 00:18:10.61\00:18:12.05 As the Hebrews understood 00:18:12.08\00:18:13.44 it was all of everything we can see or measure, 00:18:13.47\00:18:16.95 so it's encompassing all matter, energy, space and time. 00:18:16.98\00:18:21.32 And if we go to the New Testament 00:18:21.35\00:18:22.85 you actually find passage is very explicit 00:18:22.88\00:18:25.50 about the universe being the beginning of space and time. 00:18:25.53\00:18:29.90 Let's talk about this for a moment. 00:18:29.93\00:18:33.50 You are saying that there was a time when there was no time. 00:18:33.53\00:18:37.16 Well, I think time is bigger than cosmic time. 00:18:37.19\00:18:40.61 I prefer to use to the term temporality 00:18:40.64\00:18:43.37 before God created cosmic time the time dimension 00:18:43.40\00:18:47.17 to which we are constrain God was in relationship. 00:18:47.20\00:18:50.74 There are three members of the triune Godhead. 00:18:50.77\00:18:52.93 They were in relationship with one another. 00:18:52.96\00:18:55.11 And they were making plans, mean it tells us 00:18:55.14\00:18:57.83 in Timothy and Titus that before God created time, 00:18:57.86\00:19:01.70 He was already setting into affect the grace 00:19:01.73\00:19:04.47 that He was going to bestow upon His human followers 00:19:04.50\00:19:07.35 which He had not yet created. 00:19:07.38\00:19:09.40 So God was in a planning environment 00:19:09.43\00:19:11.55 before He created time. 00:19:11.58\00:19:13.81 So God was experiencing temporal phenomena 00:19:13.84\00:19:16.69 before He created cosmic time. 00:19:16.72\00:19:19.36 But notice what the thing about cosmic time, 00:19:19.39\00:19:22.17 its only one dimension and time cannot be stopped or reversed. 00:19:22.20\00:19:27.22 That's the ideal property of time 00:19:27.25\00:19:30.28 you want for a universe 00:19:30.31\00:19:31.94 where people are still struggling with sin and evil 00:19:31.97\00:19:36.00 and God has actually used that cosmic time 00:19:36.03\00:19:38.76 to bring about the end of all evil and suffering. 00:19:38.79\00:19:42.22 And will enter into a new creation 00:19:42.25\00:19:44.36 where we'll be delivered from the restrictions of cosmic time. 00:19:44.39\00:19:47.58 When do you think this great creation event took place? 00:19:47.61\00:19:51.82 We are talking about the creation 00:19:51.85\00:19:54.76 of all the-- all the cosmos? 00:19:54.79\00:19:57.82 How long ago? 00:19:57.85\00:19:58.92 Well, in our cosmic time 00:19:58.95\00:20:01.03 that would measure to be 13.8 billion years ago. 00:20:01.06\00:20:05.57 13.79. Yeah, all right. 00:20:05.60\00:20:08.77 Plus or minus .05. 00:20:08.80\00:20:13.94 Fazale, what is your concept of this God? 00:20:13.97\00:20:16.57 He must be an awesome God, 00:20:16.60\00:20:19.18 he must be, He must be a big God. 00:20:19.21\00:20:21.08 We know, typically the conception of the God 00:20:21.11\00:20:24.43 of the Bible was that He is all powerful, 00:20:24.46\00:20:26.84 all knowing and all good. And all wise. 00:20:26.87\00:20:29.42 All wise, He is eternal and as you begin to look at 00:20:29.45\00:20:32.54 what we're learning about the cosmos, 00:20:32.57\00:20:34.64 we are learning about the structure of life 00:20:34.67\00:20:37.11 at its most basic level. 00:20:37.14\00:20:38.87 You just get a-- a glimpse as to the knowledge 00:20:38.90\00:20:43.51 and the wisdom and the power and the glory of that Creator. 00:20:43.54\00:20:47.21 The creation is only just giving us 00:20:47.24\00:20:49.76 a taste of God's grandeur and God's glory. 00:20:49.79\00:20:53.37 He must be a huge massive person, 00:20:53.40\00:20:58.54 I'm not talking about physical form, 00:20:58.57\00:21:00.32 but we are talking about a universe 00:21:00.35\00:21:03.07 that's 13.8 billion years old. 00:21:03.10\00:21:08.05 Often, Christians have had the idea of a God 00:21:08.08\00:21:10.80 who made the universe a few thousand years ago. 00:21:10.83\00:21:14.40 But this opens up a completely new field, doesn't it? 00:21:14.43\00:21:17.75 It expands our minds to realize that this God 00:21:17.78\00:21:21.36 is such a huge and a big God 00:21:21.39\00:21:25.18 and as you said He is all goodness. 00:21:25.21\00:21:28.15 It will be awful if we woke up one day 00:21:28.18\00:21:30.17 and find that this is not going to happen 00:21:30.20\00:21:32.33 but imagine if God was-- was an awful person. 00:21:32.36\00:21:36.03 He is cruel and malicious. 00:21:36.06\00:21:38.03 Or there's something about the universe that tells us 00:21:38.06\00:21:40.43 that we human beings must have extremely high value 00:21:40.46\00:21:44.43 mean the very fact that He had--He made a universe 00:21:44.46\00:21:47.87 and so incredibly large and so old tells us, 00:21:47.90\00:21:51.81 look at the resources He put into effect 00:21:51.84\00:21:54.48 in order to make our existence possible. 00:21:54.51\00:21:57.04 And astronomers have discovered 00:21:57.07\00:21:58.56 they have gave the laws of physics that God choose, 00:21:58.59\00:22:01.58 it's impossible to bring human beings 00:22:01.61\00:22:04.27 upon the cosmic scene in less than 13.8 billion years. 00:22:04.30\00:22:09.36 But the window of time in which we can exist 00:22:09.39\00:22:11.87 in a civilized state can't be longer than 40,000 years. 00:22:11.90\00:22:16.45 It's which called the entropic principle inequality. 00:22:16.48\00:22:19.42 So it's a fine tuning that is beyond our comprehension. 00:22:19.45\00:22:26.67 The universe was made long, long time ago 00:22:26.70\00:22:30.78 and was made in such a way and so finely tuned. 00:22:30.81\00:22:35.23 Put me right if I'm wrong. 00:22:35.26\00:22:37.10 It was finely tuned for God to make the human race. Right. 00:22:37.13\00:22:41.61 Now, describe to me because I want the audience 00:22:41.64\00:22:45.48 to get a concept of the vastness of this universe. 00:22:45.51\00:22:49.49 Briefly tell me about black holes 00:22:49.52\00:22:52.62 and dark energy and dark matter. 00:22:52.65\00:22:55.72 Now, dark matter and dark energy, 00:22:55.75\00:22:57.96 these are relatively new concepts. 00:22:57.99\00:23:00.38 But tell me a little bit about these things? 00:23:00.41\00:23:02.99 Okay, well, stars and galaxies we see 00:23:03.02\00:23:05.35 make up about a quarter percent of the universe. 00:23:05.38\00:23:08.84 And then in addition to that 00:23:08.87\00:23:09.99 we got what's called ordinary dark matter. 00:23:10.02\00:23:13.01 There will be matter made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. 00:23:13.04\00:23:16.20 It's so disperse that they don't really emit any light 00:23:16.23\00:23:19.98 but more than 90 percent 00:23:20.01\00:23:22.90 of all the ordinary matter is called dark. 00:23:22.93\00:23:25.81 And so when we look at pictures from NASA 00:23:25.84\00:23:31.41 and from other astronomical societies. 00:23:31.44\00:23:35.40 We see these incredible galaxies. 00:23:35.43\00:23:38.77 The word is awesome, it's incomprehensible, 00:23:38.80\00:23:42.60 it's so glorious but that's, that's less than one percent 00:23:42.63\00:23:46.34 of what is out there because of the dark stuff. 00:23:46.37\00:23:50.13 Well, it takes a halo of ordinary dark matter 00:23:50.16\00:23:53.66 surrounding our Milky Way galaxy 00:23:53.69\00:23:56.22 to help stabilize the spiral structure 00:23:56.25\00:23:59.17 and beyond that you need a halo of exotic dark matter. 00:23:59.20\00:24:02.74 Now, there's six times as much exotic matter 00:24:02.77\00:24:05.33 as there is ordinary matter. 00:24:05.36\00:24:06.67 What I mean by exotic matter 00:24:06.70\00:24:08.83 is matter made up of fundamental particles 00:24:08.86\00:24:11.47 that do not interact well with photons. 00:24:11.50\00:24:14.98 Protons, neutrons and electrons do the exotic stuff doesn't. 00:24:15.01\00:24:19.25 But it takes that exotic stuff 00:24:19.28\00:24:21.44 to really make possible the kind of spiral galaxy 00:24:21.47\00:24:25.06 where advanced life can possibly exist. 00:24:25.09\00:24:27.59 So our family celebrates Thanksgiving, 00:24:27.62\00:24:30.41 we thank God for the exotic dark matter. 00:24:30.44\00:24:33.07 Because without that we wouldn't be 00:24:33.10\00:24:34.35 able to enjoy our dinner. 00:24:34.38\00:24:39.01 You have been studying astronomy for so long 00:24:39.04\00:24:41.26 and you have been studying biology for so long. 00:24:41.29\00:24:45.88 I'm impressed by your integrity 00:24:45.91\00:24:48.19 and your honesty in your scholarship 00:24:48.22\00:24:50.67 and it's a privilege for us to have you here today. 00:24:50.70\00:24:57.08 What do you think about when you think about God, Hugh? 00:24:57.11\00:25:00.38 What is God like to you? 00:25:00.41\00:25:03.05 Well, God is a being that's created this whole universe. 00:25:03.08\00:25:06.58 He created me, He created me for a purpose. 00:25:06.61\00:25:10.21 I'm not just here to live. 00:25:10.24\00:25:12.27 You know, God gave me attributes that tells me 00:25:12.30\00:25:15.15 and to use that to satisfy God's demands upon my life 00:25:15.18\00:25:19.49 and that this universe isn't the end all. No. 00:25:19.52\00:25:23.67 Absolutely, I say amen to this but if you were to meet God. 00:25:23.70\00:25:30.18 What would He be like do you think? 00:25:30.21\00:25:32.91 Well, we are told in the Bible that He is not physical, 00:25:32.94\00:25:36.20 He is spiritual. Of course. 00:25:36.23\00:25:37.77 So He doesn't have a body 00:25:37.80\00:25:39.99 but He also has given us the spirit 00:25:40.02\00:25:42.57 because we have a spirit, we can relate spirit to spirit. 00:25:42.60\00:25:46.38 So we are promised that when this physical life is over, 00:25:46.41\00:25:50.23 we are gonna have a relationship with the spiritual being. 00:25:50.26\00:25:53.17 Can we have a relationship with Him now? 00:25:53.20\00:25:55.60 Yes, our spirit can relate to His spirit right here 00:25:55.63\00:25:58.76 and now and there's proof of that. 00:25:58.79\00:26:00.62 This what got to me when I gave my life to Christ. 00:26:00.65\00:26:03.35 There is a promise in the Bible that that will set 00:26:03.38\00:26:06.37 and affect the Holy Spirit giving you the desire 00:26:06.40\00:26:09.70 and the power to live the Christian life. 00:26:09.73\00:26:12.85 And you've seen that happening in my own life. 00:26:12.88\00:26:14.95 I'm seeing how God was bringing people into my life 00:26:14.98\00:26:17.88 in supernatural ways gives me added evidence 00:26:17.91\00:26:21.49 in addition to what I see in the universe 00:26:21.52\00:26:23.49 that God is alive, 00:26:23.52\00:26:25.03 He is a personal being and He cares very deeply about me. 00:26:25.06\00:26:28.66 And is it not true to say, Faz, 00:26:28.69\00:26:31.53 that if you want to see God 00:26:31.56\00:26:33.46 and we can't comprehend His greatness. 00:26:33.49\00:26:35.70 When we talk about the stars and everything is beyond us, 00:26:35.73\00:26:39.20 but we can somewhat comprehend Jesus, 00:26:39.23\00:26:42.89 because God became a man in the person of Jesus 00:26:42.92\00:26:46.94 and Jesus said "He that has seen Me has seen the Father." 00:26:46.97\00:26:51.26 And He was a pretty nice person, wasn't He? 00:26:51.29\00:26:54.19 He was kind, He was gracious, 00:26:54.22\00:26:57.00 He was forgiving, He was a marvelous person. 00:26:57.03\00:27:00.66 And God in Christ created all of the universe 00:27:00.69\00:27:06.73 and all of the cells everything 00:27:06.76\00:27:09.55 and it's no wonder they wrote that hymn, 00:27:09.58\00:27:12.70 "How great thou art." 00:27:12.73\00:27:14.73 Because He certainly is a wonderful God 00:27:14.76\00:27:17.47 and He wants us to know Him. 00:27:17.50\00:27:20.46 And I want you to write to me or write to my friends here today, 00:27:20.49\00:27:25.09 Dr. Rana or Dr. Ross. 00:27:25.12\00:27:28.02 Write to me at the Carter Report PO Box 1900, 00:27:28.05\00:27:31.53 Thousand Oaks, California 91358. 00:27:31.56\00:27:34.77 And please write to Reasons to Believe 00:27:34.80\00:27:37.51 if you want to ask questions concerning the purpose 00:27:37.54\00:27:41.14 and the greatness of the universe. 00:27:41.17\00:27:44.63 It's been wonderful having you with us right now 00:27:44.66\00:27:48.47 and we will be back and we will be talking to you more 00:27:48.50\00:27:51.40 about these marvelous things about the stars. 00:27:51.43\00:27:56.20
