visited the city of Hong Kong.

After the first Opium
War back in the 19th century,

make a treaty with Great Britain

they had a war and the

He never went to college

because Jesus said the gospel
of the kingdom would be preached

in the whole world

So nothing can stop

Men may hinder.

You and I by close mindedness,

Now to understand the
magnitude of the miracle,

the Chinese miracle,
you need to understand

the political realities and
the historical developments.
00:12:05.86\00:12:13.04
Because, my friend,
00:12:13.07\00:12:14.99
if the gospel can
be preached in China,
00:12:15.02\00:12:19.57
it can be preached anywhere
00:12:19.60\00:12:22.30
even in places as
sinful as Los Angeles
00:12:22.33\00:12:28.89
and the United
States of America.
00:12:28.92\00:12:33.29
God can do it in China.
00:12:36.05\00:12:38.15
He can even do it
with the Americans.
00:12:38.18\00:12:40.89
Let me give you
a little history.
00:12:40.92\00:12:43.58
Christianity came to China
00:12:43.61\00:12:46.36
more than one and a
half millenniums ago.
00:12:46.39\00:12:50.65
Nestorian Christians came about
200 or 300 years after Christ
00:12:50.68\00:12:56.58
and even though they
were not Orthodox Christians,
00:12:56.61\00:12:59.75
they had a formidable influence
in the courts of the emperors.
00:12:59.78\00:13:06.06
The Jesuits, the great
Roman Catholic scholars,
00:13:06.09\00:13:12.66
the world's
greatest intellectuals
00:13:12.69\00:13:15.89
came around 1550 A.D.
00:13:15.92\00:13:19.95
They were
scholars and scientists
00:13:19.98\00:13:22.59
and they were so successful.
00:13:22.62\00:13:25.94
There was the possibility of all
of China becoming Roman Catholic
00:13:25.97\00:13:31.95
and then the pope
threw a spanner in the works.
00:13:31.98\00:13:38.02
Because the Chinese
Christians had a practice
00:13:38.05\00:13:43.07
of venerating their ancestors.
00:13:43.10\00:13:47.82
And the Pope by a papal decree
said that this had to stop
00:13:47.85\00:13:53.10
and therefore the
Jesuits in the Catholic Church
00:13:53.13\00:13:56.57
back in those days, they were
flung out of the land of China
00:13:56.60\00:14:01.05
but for the Pope's interference,
00:14:01.08\00:14:03.52
China today could
be another Mexico,
00:14:03.55\00:14:09.49
a Roman Catholic country.
00:14:09.52\00:14:13.28
This left a bad taste
in the mouth of the Chinese
00:14:13.31\00:14:20.17
but there was worse to come.
00:14:20.20\00:14:22.78
The Christian powers of
Europe led by Great Britain
00:14:22.81\00:14:30.79
from whence came my
ancestors during the 1800s
00:14:30.82\00:14:37.28
tried to force opium
upon the Chinese people.
00:14:37.31\00:14:43.45
No wonder they
don't like the West.
00:14:43.48\00:14:48.53
Great Britain had
taken over most of the world
00:14:51.92\00:14:56.55
it seemed including India.
00:14:56.58\00:14:59.69
And in India, Great
Britain was growing opium
00:14:59.72\00:15:06.97
and they wanted a
market for their opium.
00:15:07.00\00:15:09.74
And so they sold
it to the Chinese
00:15:09.77\00:15:14.41
and millions of the
Chinese became drug addicts.
00:15:14.44\00:15:20.97
The Chinese government
and the emperor protested.
00:15:21.00\00:15:26.94
And in 1839, the Chinese
burned 20,000 cases of Opium
00:15:26.97\00:15:33.65
even on British
ships and so there was war.
00:15:33.68\00:15:39.37
Great Britain
went to war with China.
00:15:39.40\00:15:41.61
In 1842, the British
fleet bombarded the cities,
00:15:41.64\00:15:46.48
the coastal
cities of China and China
00:15:46.51\00:15:50.54
crumbled before Great Britain.
00:15:50.57\00:15:54.39
And that's how the
British got Hong Kong
00:15:54.42\00:15:59.20
because of the opium trait.
00:15:59.23\00:16:03.29
And Britain, of
course, was seen by the world
00:16:03.32\00:16:06.25
as the leader of the
Christians, a Christian nation.
00:16:06.28\00:16:14.54
But the Chinese said
we don't want this opium.
00:16:14.57\00:16:18.34
We do not want our
people to become drug addicts,
00:16:18.37\00:16:21.14
so they rebelled.
00:16:21.17\00:16:22.54
And so in 1856, the
British aided by the French
00:16:22.57\00:16:28.75
went to war against the
Chinese and defeated them.
00:16:28.78\00:16:34.87
And Christian missionaries
00:16:34.90\00:16:37.17
even though they were personally
opposed to the sale of opium
00:16:37.20\00:16:43.45
were seen as
representatives of a decadent
00:16:45.71\00:16:50.48
and corrupt
Christianity of the West.
00:16:50.51\00:16:55.36
Then came between
the years 1848 and 1865,
00:16:55.39\00:17:00.21
the famous Taiping
Rebellion, led by a man,
00:17:00.24\00:17:05.27
my friend, who
professed to be a Christian
00:17:05.30\00:17:09.61
not an orthodox
Christian by any means.
00:17:09.64\00:17:13.39
But this man said,
"We've had enough of idolatry.
00:17:13.42\00:17:18.07
And we've had enough of opium.
00:17:18.10\00:17:21.04
And we've had enough of
the suppression of women
00:17:21.07\00:17:24.60
and the binding of their feet."
00:17:24.63\00:17:28.97
And so he led a rebellion
against the Chinese government
00:17:29.00\00:17:32.89
and almost succeeded.
00:17:32.92\00:17:39.00
But the West did
not want him to win
00:17:39.03\00:17:43.22
because if he won,
there'd be no more opium sold.
00:17:43.25\00:17:48.49
And if he won, China would
become a great Christian power.
00:17:48.52\00:17:55.98
And so the powers
of Christian Europe
00:17:56.01\00:17:59.33
made war against
them and defeated them.
00:17:59.36\00:18:04.59
What a history.

When it was over,
00:18:06.62\00:18:08.56
there were 20 million
Chinese dead, 20 million.

No country has
presented more challenges

to the preaching of
the gospel than China.

And if it can be
preached in China

after all of these abominations,

it can be preached anywhere
including Australia and America.

One of the greatest
names in the history

of the preaching of the
gospel is Hudson Taylor.

This young Englishman
who fought his own government

on the sale of
opium left England in 1854

when he was 21 years of age.
00:19:00.25\00:19:03.76
He soon became sick and was
forced to go back to England.
00:19:03.79\00:19:09.23
But then with a
passion in his soul,

he was driven back to China
00:19:12.30\00:19:14.67
and he founded one of
the greatest organizations
00:19:14.70\00:19:18.60
in the history of
the Christian church,

the China-Inland Mission.
00:19:22.27\00:19:26.24
When I was reading his life
story over the last few days,

I read where
Hudson Taylor taught this.
00:19:31.00\00:19:34.58
And this is what
motivated him and propelled him.

He taught this,
that the only way
00:19:41.70\00:19:45.18
we can be saved is
through Jesus Christ
00:19:45.21\00:19:49.66
and that any person
outside of Christ is lost
00:19:49.69\00:19:55.02
and that the vast
numbers of the heathen
00:19:55.05\00:20:00.48
and the pagans are
lost without Christ
00:20:00.51\00:20:04.47
and it is the
church's responsibility
00:20:04.50\00:20:07.51
to bring them Christ.

He had a number
of texts that he used

and one text was Acts

that drove the missionaries.

developed a different approach

The churches
developed an educational work,

They made war against
all forms of capitalism

They called these elements,
