From Arcadia, California, the Carter Report Presents, 00:00:07.69\00:00:10.74 'The Living Word' around the world. 00:00:10.77\00:00:13.08 Our topic today is a great subject, 00:00:17.75\00:00:21.08 'God and Money,' 00:00:21.11\00:00:23.65 How to survive the financial crises. 00:00:23.68\00:00:27.46 I've got some great material today. 00:00:27.49\00:00:29.81 But before I speak I want to introduce 00:00:29.84\00:00:32.50 to you my wife, Beverley. 00:00:32.53\00:00:34.30 Would you please welcome her today. 00:00:34.33\00:00:36.76 I could be as far as him too, but he says, Beverly, 00:00:45.20\00:00:47.82 don't get up there and preach, 00:00:47.85\00:00:49.22 just say something nice so here we go. 00:00:49.25\00:00:53.24 Good morning everyone, 00:00:55.08\00:00:56.45 it is a beautiful Sabbath day, isn't it? Amen. 00:00:56.48\00:01:00.16 A husband, a very bright one, 00:01:00.19\00:01:03.43 spoke to his wife about overspending 00:01:03.46\00:01:06.08 the budget to which she replied. 00:01:06.11\00:01:09.13 Of course I spend more than you make my dear, 00:01:09.16\00:01:12.30 because I have great confidence in you. 00:01:12.33\00:01:16.10 I'm not sure that made him feel any better, but anyway. 00:01:16.13\00:01:19.60 But speaking about overspending, 00:01:19.63\00:01:22.14 in recent times many including banks, 00:01:22.17\00:01:24.58 and Wall Street, have been doing just that. 00:01:24.61\00:01:27.21 And John's going to be speaking about that today. 00:01:27.24\00:01:29.93 But before he does I'd like to ask you a question, 00:01:29.96\00:01:33.52 what is the desire of your heart? 00:01:33.55\00:01:37.80 A big car, a big home, more clothes, more money, 00:01:37.83\00:01:41.61 and is there anything wrong with these desires? 00:01:41.64\00:01:45.08 Some Stoic philosophers, thousand of years ago 00:01:45.11\00:01:49.51 at the beginning of Christianity 00:01:49.54\00:01:51.51 taught that the Christian 00:01:51.54\00:01:52.91 should destroy all these desires. 00:01:52.94\00:01:55.79 Now, while it is true that the Bible teaches 00:01:55.82\00:01:59.75 the desire to lie, to steal, to blaspheme, 00:01:59.78\00:02:04.34 to commit adultery, sexual or emotional, to murder, 00:02:04.37\00:02:08.82 to do bodily harm, all these desires are wrong. 00:02:08.85\00:02:12.32 But the Bible does speak about good desires. 00:02:12.35\00:02:16.79 And in 1 Timothy 6, Paul, tells us, 00:02:16.82\00:02:19.66 to desire righteousness, godliness, 00:02:19.69\00:02:22.98 to do good, be generous, and more. 00:02:23.01\00:02:26.63 Now, this Chapter also tells us while we have to make a living, 00:02:26.66\00:02:30.86 we need to be careful that we don't become greedy. 00:02:30.89\00:02:34.81 Many think if they become rich and famous 00:02:34.84\00:02:37.24 that they've really made it in life. 00:02:37.27\00:02:40.15 But you know? If the desire to be rich, 00:02:40.18\00:02:43.30 destroys our desire for heaven. 00:02:43.33\00:02:46.26 Then it's just like we've been playing with mud-pies. 00:02:46.29\00:02:50.67 And throwing the real treasure away. 00:02:50.70\00:02:54.32 Luke 12 says where your treasure is, 00:02:54.35\00:02:57.82 there your heart will be also. 00:02:57.85\00:03:00.91 1 Timothy 6 tells us. 00:03:00.94\00:03:02.50 And this is Paul speaking of course. 00:03:02.53\00:03:05.09 To lay up treasure in heaven, 00:03:05.12\00:03:06.82 we need to be rich in good works, 00:03:06.85\00:03:09.71 to be generous, and ready to share our blessings. 00:03:09.74\00:03:13.10 Don't be selfish and let's remember 00:03:13.13\00:03:16.15 the story of the prodigal son. 00:03:16.18\00:03:18.46 Now he like so many wanted immediate wealth, 00:03:18.49\00:03:21.99 so he asked for his inheritance, 00:03:22.02\00:03:23.77 so he was given it. 00:03:23.80\00:03:25.59 And then we see him running down 00:03:25.62\00:03:27.02 the road towards Las Vegas. 00:03:27.05\00:03:29.60 Well, it may not have been Las Vegas, 00:03:29.63\00:03:31.03 but it was the city of sin. 00:03:31.06\00:03:32.78 And he was thinking about all the great things 00:03:32.81\00:03:35.14 he was going to do, he would eat, drink, 00:03:35.17\00:03:37.87 and merry to his heart's content. 00:03:37.90\00:03:39.81 Not considering, that his money would ever run out. 00:03:39.84\00:03:42.35 But of course that's exactly what happened. 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.56 And then he soon found himself in the pig-pen, 00:03:44.59\00:03:49.25 so hungry that he would even eat 00:03:49.28\00:03:51.34 what the pigs were eating. 00:03:51.37\00:03:52.76 But the Bible says, no one gave him anything. 00:03:52.79\00:03:58.66 This wasn't just a physical hunger of course, 00:03:58.69\00:04:01.09 it was mainly a spiritual one. 00:04:01.12\00:04:04.26 Before coming to Christ, 00:04:04.29\00:04:05.70 we all have this hunger in our souls. 00:04:05.73\00:04:08.06 We have a hole in our hearts that only one can fill 00:04:08.09\00:04:12.71 and that is the desire of all the ages, Jesus Christ. 00:04:12.74\00:04:18.85 The Bible teaches us not to become enamored 00:04:18.88\00:04:21.80 with the things of this world. 00:04:21.83\00:04:23.87 God doesn't want us to spend that time fretting 00:04:23.90\00:04:26.95 about what we don't have or worrying about 00:04:26.98\00:04:29.67 getting more of what we do have. 00:04:29.70\00:04:32.32 Since the recent financial crises, 00:04:32.35\00:04:35.03 many people, many of my friends 00:04:35.06\00:04:37.39 we've been speaking about downsizing 00:04:37.42\00:04:40.04 and trying to live a more simple life. 00:04:40.07\00:04:42.79 And this fits with Paul's words in both Hebrews 13 00:04:42.82\00:04:46.73 and 1 Timothy 6. Keep your lives free, 00:04:46.76\00:04:51.03 from the love of money and be content with what you have, 00:04:51.06\00:04:56.04 instead pursue or desire righteousness, 00:04:56.07\00:05:00.46 godliness, faith, love, 00:05:00.49\00:05:02.59 endurance and gentleness. 00:05:02.62\00:05:05.59 May these desires be the desire of our hearts. Amen. 00:05:05.62\00:05:11.15 Topic today is this, it's a great subject. 00:05:19.02\00:05:22.89 "God and Money." What a blessing. 00:09:26.77\00:09:31.16 And God gave this to the children of Israel 00:09:31.19\00:09:34.44 thousands of years ago. 00:09:34.47\00:09:36.41 And God said to his people these words. 00:09:36.44\00:09:39.22 Now listen, he said, 00:09:39.25\00:09:40.62 "If you obey me, I'm gonna bless you. 00:09:40.65\00:09:44.59 I'm gonna give you so many blessing 00:09:44.62\00:09:47.36 that your house is not going to be full enough 00:09:47.39\00:09:50.51 to receive the blessings." 00:09:50.54\00:09:53.03 And this prophesy was partially fulfilled, 00:09:53.06\00:09:59.15 fulfilled of cours in the days of Solomon. 00:09:59.18\00:10:01.27 The historical context. 00:10:01.30\00:10:03.53 These people had been poor slaves in Egypt, 00:10:03.56\00:10:09.03 the lowest of the low. 00:10:09.06\00:10:12.24 God made them by His grace. 00:10:12.27\00:10:15.58 His special people and he made a covenant with them. 00:10:15.61\00:10:21.04 And when the Israelites obeyed God, they were blessed. 00:10:21.07\00:10:24.91 Think of Solomon, all the silver, 00:10:24.94\00:10:28.23 all of the gold, all of the good things 00:10:28.26\00:10:32.61 they had in those days. 00:10:32.64\00:10:34.45 All their enemies were defeated. 00:10:34.48\00:10:39.07 Here's the truth, listen, 00:10:39.10\00:10:42.95 God gave these promises to the children of Israel, 00:10:42.98\00:10:46.90 but when the children of Israel crucified their Messiah. 00:10:46.93\00:10:53.54 God took these promises from them 00:10:53.57\00:10:56.90 and gave them to the new Israel, 00:10:56.93\00:11:01.32 not of the flesh but of the spirit. 00:11:01.35\00:11:05.77 And that's important. 00:11:05.80\00:11:07.17 Come over here to Matthew 21:43. 00:11:07.20\00:11:10.16 Matthew 21 this a bit of theology to start off. 00:11:10.19\00:11:13.30 Mathew 21:43. We've got the text. 00:11:13.33\00:11:17.34 What's keeping you, so slow today? 00:11:17.37\00:11:18.91 Matthew 21:43. Jesus said, 00:11:18.94\00:11:23.04 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God 00:11:23.07\00:11:26.05 will be taken away from you." 00:11:26.08\00:11:27.92 Talking to the Jewish people. " 00:11:27.95\00:11:29.87 And given to a people 00:11:29.90\00:11:31.72 who will produce its fruit." 00:11:31.75\00:11:38.34 So God said because of their rejection of the Messiah, 00:11:38.37\00:11:44.28 that the kingdom of God and the promises 00:11:44.31\00:11:47.32 that relate to the kingdom of God. 00:11:47.35\00:11:49.99 These promises would be taken from them 00:11:50.02\00:11:52.25 and given to another nation, another people. 00:11:52.28\00:11:56.24 Who are these people? Come over here 00:11:56.27\00:11:57.64 to Galatians 3:28 and 29. 00:11:57.67\00:12:01.14 Here it talks about the real Israel. 00:12:01.17\00:12:03.64 People talk about the holy land, 00:12:03.67\00:12:05.36 thinking of the land of Israel, 00:12:05.39\00:12:07.88 but that land my friend, hasn't been holy 00:12:07.91\00:12:10.19 since they rejected the Holy One. 00:12:10.22\00:12:12.37 Now come over here to Galatians 00:12:12.40\00:12:13.94 Chapter 3:28 and 29. 00:12:13.97\00:12:17.67 Paul says. There is neither Jew nor Greek, 00:12:17.70\00:12:22.29 slave nor free, male nor female, 00:12:22.32\00:12:26.16 for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:12:26.19\00:12:28.27 If you belong to Christ, then are you Abraham's seed, 00:12:28.30\00:12:32.16 and heirs according to the promise." 00:12:32.19\00:12:34.07 Listen to this because this is the truth, 00:12:34.10\00:12:36.41 listen to me, listen to me. 00:12:36.44\00:12:39.46 If a person truly believes in Christ, 00:12:39.49\00:12:43.73 whether he's a Jew or Gentile, 00:12:43.76\00:12:46.10 whether he's an American, 00:12:46.13\00:12:47.68 or an African, or an Australian. 00:12:47.71\00:12:50.24 Whether he's white or black, it makes no difference. 00:12:50.27\00:12:53.08 When a person truly believes in Christ, the Bible says, 00:12:53.11\00:12:57.25 he is a child of the king and an Israelite. 00:12:57.28\00:13:02.12 And the Bible says, 00:13:02.15\00:13:03.52 the promises belong to that person. 00:13:03.55\00:13:07.21 So listen to this because this is quite amazing. 00:13:07.24\00:13:11.27 God says, to the new Israel, 00:13:11.30\00:13:14.74 you will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. 00:13:14.77\00:13:20.04 You will be blessed when you come in 00:13:20.07\00:13:22.19 and blessed when you go out. 00:13:22.22\00:13:24.22 The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up 00:13:24.25\00:13:26.28 against you will be defeated before you. 00:13:26.31\00:13:29.46 The Lord will open the heavens, 00:13:29.49\00:13:31.90 the storehouse of his bounty, 00:13:31.93\00:13:34.17 to send rain on your land in season. 00:13:34.20\00:13:37.19 And to bless all the works of your hands. 00:13:37.22\00:13:40.81 You will lend to many nations, 00:13:40.84\00:13:42.74 but you will borrow from none. 00:13:42.77\00:13:46.34 The Lord will make you, the head and not the tail. 00:13:46.37\00:13:50.42 If--here it is, here's a condition, 00:13:50.45\00:13:53.19 if you pay attention 00:13:53.22\00:13:55.84 to the commands of the Lord your God, 00:13:55.87\00:13:59.14 you'll always be at the top, never at the bottom. 00:13:59.17\00:14:03.57 That's the promise in the word of God, 00:14:03.60\00:14:07.12 for the faithful child of God. 00:14:07.15\00:14:10.33 I want you to know today this, 00:14:10.36\00:14:12.76 I want to make this ever, ever so plain. 00:14:12.79\00:14:15.29 Money is good. Money is good. 00:14:15.32\00:14:22.62 We need money to do good works. 00:14:22.65\00:14:25.81 Money is good, 00:14:25.84\00:14:27.73 but the love of money is bad. 00:14:27.76\00:14:34.22 The love of money is bad. 00:14:34.25\00:14:39.66 Because money can get our hold on a man's heart 00:14:39.69\00:14:44.31 or a woman's heart and shrivel up his soul. 00:14:44.34\00:14:50.72 I was talking to my daughter, Julie, 00:14:50.75\00:14:54.34 who dropped in to see us last Monday. 00:14:54.37\00:14:57.27 And she said-- told us 00:14:57.30\00:14:59.09 how she been working in this tiny little town in Kenya. 00:14:59.12\00:15:04.79 There were doing 10 operations a day as volunteers. 00:15:04.82\00:15:11.50 She said, in the hospital that has two doctors. 00:15:11.53\00:15:15.13 This is in Kenya. No running water, 00:15:15.16\00:15:19.57 no drugs, none of those things. 00:15:19.60\00:15:24.44 She said, we didn't have the instruments 00:15:24.47\00:15:26.58 that you use to hold the wound apart, 00:15:26.61\00:15:30.71 so that the doctor could get in there. 00:15:30.74\00:15:32.48 She said, that was my job to hold the wound apart. 00:15:32.51\00:15:37.70 She said, we have an aim, 00:15:37.73\00:15:40.14 we want to build them a hospital. 00:15:40.17\00:15:45.30 Money is good 00:15:45.33\00:15:48.49 because it's the means of doing good. 00:15:48.52\00:15:53.35 And the greatest good I want you to know is taking 00:15:53.38\00:15:57.58 the message of salvation to lost people. 00:15:57.61\00:16:03.05 The most important work in all the world. 00:16:03.08\00:16:06.53 Listen to me, is not sitting on some committee, 00:16:06.56\00:16:11.08 talking about what ought to be done. 00:16:11.11\00:16:14.09 Don't you get tired of this stuff? 00:16:14.12\00:16:16.43 Or another convocation to talk about something. 00:16:16.46\00:16:21.84 The most important thing in all the world, 00:16:21.87\00:16:24.41 is preaching the gospel of Christ to the lost. 00:16:24.44\00:16:28.32 And you need money to do it. 00:16:28.35\00:16:32.44 Just doesn't happen. 00:16:32.47\00:16:34.08 Come over here to Isaiah 55:1 down to 7. 00:16:34.11\00:16:37.37 Isaiah 55:1 to 7. God says, 00:16:37.40\00:16:41.03 "Come, all you who are thirsty, 00:16:41.06\00:16:43.70 come to the waters, and you have no money, 00:16:43.73\00:16:46.36 come, buy and eat! 00:16:46.39\00:16:48.24 Come, buy wine and milk, this is the gospel. 00:16:48.27\00:16:51.80 Without money and without cost, 00:16:51.83\00:16:53.49 we should never charge at the door for people 00:16:53.52\00:16:57.83 to come in to an evangelistic meeting. 00:16:57.86\00:17:00.87 It's wrong, do it without money, 00:17:00.90\00:17:02.86 without cost. 00:17:02.89\00:17:04.45 Why spend money on what is not bread, 00:17:04.48\00:17:07.84 and your labor on what does not satisfy? 00:17:07.87\00:17:10.38 Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good 00:17:10.41\00:17:14.40 and your soul will delight in the richest of fare." 00:17:14.43\00:17:19.85 We need money. God needs money. 00:17:19.88\00:17:23.53 God needs money? No, God doesn't need money, 00:17:23.56\00:17:26.76 but we need to do it. 00:17:26.79\00:17:30.56 And money ought to be-- and therefore money is good. 00:17:30.59\00:17:34.85 It's the love of money that is so bad. 00:17:34.88\00:17:42.52 Because it's got a way 00:17:42.55\00:17:43.92 of getting into a person's heart. 00:17:43.95\00:17:48.32 Saving a soul for eternity. 00:17:48.35\00:17:51.24 I remember as a student colporteur 00:17:51.27\00:17:54.86 as poor as a church mouse. 00:17:54.89\00:17:58.80 And there is no mouse so poor as a mouse 00:17:58.83\00:18:03.48 that hangs around a church. 00:18:03.51\00:18:08.68 Because that sort of reflects 00:18:08.71\00:18:10.65 some of the people who go to the church. 00:18:10.68\00:18:14.26 I can remember getting a book called Colporteur ministry. 00:18:14.29\00:18:18.59 I remember the picture of a colporteur, 00:18:18.62\00:18:21.36 selling a book. 00:18:21.39\00:18:23.37 And there's an old man looking 00:18:23.40\00:18:25.37 at the book and on the other page, 00:18:25.40\00:18:28.26 there's a picture of two young men, 00:18:28.29\00:18:30.93 home and glory both those people. 00:18:30.96\00:18:36.46 If you win a soul, you win a soul for eternity. 00:18:36.49\00:18:43.67 Money is good. 00:18:43.70\00:18:46.81 The love of money is bad. 00:18:46.84\00:18:49.34 Come over here to 1 Timothy 6:6 to 10. 00:18:49.37\00:18:54.00 That's why some people when they are baptized, 00:18:54.03\00:18:56.31 needs to be baptized with their wallets. 00:18:56.34\00:18:59.10 1 Timothy 6:6 to 10. 00:18:59.13\00:19:03.24 1 Timothy 6:6 to 10. 00:19:03.27\00:19:07.33 "But godliness with contentment is great gain. 00:19:07.36\00:19:11.10 For we brought nothing into the world 00:19:11.13\00:19:13.12 and we can't take nothing out of it. 00:19:13.15\00:19:14.94 But if we have food and clothing, 00:19:14.97\00:19:16.86 we will be content with that. 00:19:16.89\00:19:18.83 People who want to get rich fall into temptation 00:19:18.86\00:19:21.66 and in a trap and into many foolish 00:19:21.69\00:19:23.47 and harmful desires that plunge men 00:19:23.50\00:19:25.82 into ruin and destruction. 00:19:25.85\00:19:27.62 Say the text with me, this N I V. 00:19:27.65\00:19:30.11 For the love, common, for the love of money 00:19:30.14\00:19:35.02 is the route to all kinds of evil. 00:19:35.05\00:19:37.16 Some people eager for money 00:19:37.19\00:19:40.29 have wandered from the faith 00:19:40.32\00:19:41.69 and pierced themselves with many griefs." 00:19:41.72\00:19:46.30 So money is good. 00:19:46.33\00:19:49.32 The love of money is really, really bad. 00:19:49.35\00:19:53.84 Jesus, our Lord, had a lot to say about money. 00:19:53.87\00:19:58.33 Can I share you some text. 00:19:58.36\00:19:59.88 We're not just talking to the Wall Street people, 00:19:59.91\00:20:02.10 though we are talking to them too. 00:20:02.13\00:20:03.82 Come over here to Luke 12:15 to 21. 00:20:03.85\00:20:07.54 Luke Chapter-- I don't think these folks 00:20:07.57\00:20:09.22 at Wall-Street has ever read these text. 00:20:09.25\00:20:10.95 Luke 12:15 to 21. 00:20:10.98\00:20:13.43 I don't think they wanna read this stuff. 00:20:13.46\00:20:15.81 Luke Chapter 12:15 and onwards. 00:20:15.84\00:20:17.85 "Then he said to them,' Watch out! 00:20:17.88\00:20:19.27 Be on your guard against all kinds of greed, 00:20:19.30\00:20:22.99 a man's life does not consist 00:20:23.02\00:20:25.02 in the abundance of his possessions. 00:20:25.05\00:20:27.78 And he told them this parable.' 00:20:27.81\00:20:29.27 The ground of a certain rich man 00:20:29.30\00:20:30.84 produced a good crop. 00:20:30.87\00:20:32.29 He thought to himself, what shall I do? 00:20:32.32\00:20:34.46 I have no place to store my crops. 00:20:34.49\00:20:37.09 Then he said. This is what I'll do. 00:20:37.12\00:20:38.81 I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, 00:20:38.84\00:20:43.52 and there I will store all my grains and my goods. 00:20:43.55\00:20:47.09 And I'll say to myself, you have plenty of good 00:20:47.12\00:20:49.83 things laid up for many years. 00:20:49.86\00:20:52.07 Take life easy, eat, drink and be merry. 00:20:52.10\00:20:57.58 'But God said to him, 'You fool! 00:20:57.61\00:21:01.62 This very night your life will be demanded from you. 00:21:01.65\00:21:04.43 Then who will get what you prepared for yourself?' 00:21:04.46\00:21:08.03 This is how it will be with anyone who stores up 00:21:08.06\00:21:11.28 things for himself but is not rich towards God.' 00:21:11.31\00:21:15.99 So the love of money is the route of all evil. 00:21:16.02\00:21:20.33 Money is good. 00:21:20.36\00:21:22.84 The love of money is bad. 00:21:22.87\00:21:25.88 Come over now to Matthew 19:23, 24. 00:21:25.91\00:21:28.70 Matthew Chapter 19:23, 24. 00:21:28.73\00:21:33.03 Dear hearts and gentle people 00:21:33.06\00:21:34.43 Matthew 19:23, 24 Jesus said, 00:21:34.46\00:21:38.55 after talking to a certain rich young guy, Jesus said, 00:21:38.58\00:21:42.20 "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 00:21:42.23\00:21:44.07 'I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man 00:21:44.10\00:21:47.45 to enter the kingdom of heaven. 00:21:47.48\00:21:49.35 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel, 00:21:49.38\00:21:52.69 imagine this for a camel, 00:21:52.72\00:21:55.18 to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man 00:21:55.21\00:22:00.08 to enter the kingdom of God.'" 00:22:00.11\00:22:02.05 And once upon a time the preacher said, 00:22:02.08\00:22:04.08 the eye of the needle was a little gate. 00:22:04.11\00:22:06.20 Somewhere outside Jerusalem in the wall of Jerusalem. 00:22:06.23\00:22:09.37 And the camel could only get through, 00:22:09.40\00:22:10.77 if he got through on his knees. 00:22:10.80\00:22:12.17 That's not true at all. 00:22:12.20\00:22:13.57 The eye of the needle is a needle. 00:22:13.60\00:22:16.97 So Jesus, our Lord, 00:22:17.00\00:22:18.87 had a lot to say about money, 00:22:18.90\00:22:21.78 because money has a lot to say about us. 00:22:21.81\00:22:26.41 So I got these high-tech blackboards over here. 00:22:26.44\00:22:30.97 The topic is, "God and Your Money" 00:22:31.00\00:22:33.78 and how 00:22:33.81\00:22:35.19 to solve 00:22:35.22\00:22:39.78 your. 00:22:39.81\00:22:43.52 How to solve your financial 00:22:43.55\00:22:49.29 problems or challenges. 00:22:49.32\00:22:54.01 And the text in Deuteronomy told me this, 00:22:54.04\00:22:58.00 that there is a relationship between 00:22:58.03\00:23:01.65 the blessing of God and prosperity. 00:23:01.68\00:23:05.48 And we're not talking about the prosperity 00:23:05.51\00:23:07.08 gospel because we don't believe this. 00:23:07.11\00:23:09.27 But the Bible tells us that when we obey God. 00:23:09.30\00:23:16.95 This is a fact, this is not prosperity gospel, 00:23:16.98\00:23:19.00 this is just the truth. 00:23:19.03\00:23:21.03 The Bible says when we obey God, 00:23:21.06\00:23:24.87 that God is going to give us a tremendous blessing. 00:23:24.90\00:23:31.89 And can anybody say amen to that. 00:23:31.92\00:23:34.79 Amen. That's good. 00:23:34.82\00:23:37.80 And so the Bible tells me, that when I obey God. 00:23:37.83\00:23:42.49 God is going to bless me more than I can understand. 00:23:42.52\00:23:45.94 I just wondered how Jesus would fit in today. 00:23:45.97\00:23:48.36 I just wondered how Jesus would fit in on Wall Street. 00:23:48.39\00:23:52.65 Remember, what Jesus said. King James Version. 00:23:52.68\00:23:55.20 "A man's life consisteth not in the abundance 00:23:55.23\00:23:58.79 of the things which he possesses." 00:23:58.82\00:24:01.58 What's more important than money anyhow? 00:24:04.66\00:24:07.25 'Cause money is good. 00:24:07.28\00:24:08.88 It's the love of money that's bad. 00:24:08.91\00:24:10.97 What's more important than money? Yeah. 00:32:21.12\00:32:26.79 Bernie Madoff, the greatest he-Madoff, that's right, doctor. 00:32:26.82\00:32:33.42 He mad off with 50 or 60 not million. 00:32:33.45\00:32:39.00 He mad off with 60, around 50 or 60 billion dollars, 00:32:39.03\00:32:44.40 that's more than many countries. But if he said, it is so. 00:36:39.11\00:36:42.93 You could pretty much stake your life on it. 00:36:42.96\00:36:44.78 He was a man of honor. May his tribe increase. 00:36:44.81\00:36:49.97 And the next point is this, be a hard worker, don't be lazy. 00:36:50.00\00:36:55.00 Come over here, to Proverbs 10:4. 00:36:55.03\00:36:58.74 Proverbs 10:4, the wise man says, 00:36:58.77\00:37:03.59 "Lazy hands make a man poor, 00:37:03.62\00:37:07.99 but diligent hands bring wealth." 00:37:08.02\00:37:12.54 Remember the man who said, the harder I work, 00:37:12.57\00:37:17.86 the luckier I get. 00:37:17.89\00:37:22.82 Spurgeon was called the Prince of Preachers. 00:37:22.85\00:37:26.03 He ran a school for preachers in London. 00:37:26.06\00:37:30.08 And he said this, if a man comes to my school 00:37:30.11\00:37:34.21 and he's a man who's got a short temper. 00:37:34.24\00:37:37.46 We say come in, we can use you. 00:37:37.49\00:37:39.64 We can redirect that energy into a better way. 00:37:39.67\00:37:43.88 If a man came to his seminary and said, 00:37:43.91\00:37:48.36 I'm ignorant, I don't even understand 00:37:48.39\00:37:51.31 the principles of the gospel. 00:37:51.34\00:37:53.08 Spurgeon would say, come on in because we can teach you. 00:37:53.11\00:37:56.66 But Spurgeon said, if a man applied for the ministry 00:37:56.69\00:38:00.73 and was lazy, he would say go home. 00:38:00.76\00:38:07.09 Because we did not believe we can help you. 00:38:07.12\00:38:10.14 And we doubt whether God can. 00:38:10.17\00:38:12.33 Laziness is a sin against God, the family, 00:38:17.30\00:38:24.89 the world, and the church. 00:38:24.92\00:38:29.02 I have a friend, 00:38:29.05\00:38:30.42 who is the President of 3ABN Dr. James Gilley. 00:38:30.45\00:38:35.71 During a period of 10 years, he with his wife Camille 00:38:35.74\00:38:40.46 and four children ran 43 evangelistic campaigns. 00:38:40.49\00:38:46.28 And each campaign lasted a full month. 00:38:46.31\00:38:50.25 He was a man of God and a true minister. 00:38:50.28\00:38:54.74 A lazy minister is an abomination 00:38:54.77\00:38:59.28 in the sight of the Lord. 00:38:59.31\00:39:00.95 If you want to get out of problems, be a hard worker. 00:39:05.99\00:39:12.73 And last but not least make God your partner. 00:39:12.76\00:39:16.23 Come over here to Genesis 28, 00:39:16.26\00:39:18.64 this is the story of struggling Jacob. 00:39:18.67\00:39:22.69 Genesis 28:12, you know, the New Testament says, 00:39:22.72\00:39:29.70 if a man will not work when he can, 00:39:29.73\00:39:33.54 neither should he eat. 00:39:33.57\00:39:35.68 That's what the Bible says. 00:39:35.71\00:39:37.08 If you won't work when you can, you shouldn't eat. 00:39:37.11\00:39:42.80 There'd be a lot of people hungry, wouldn't there? 00:39:42.83\00:39:45.91 Genesis 28:12, "He had a dream, 00:39:45.94\00:39:49.03 in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, 00:39:49.06\00:39:52.15 with its top reaching to heaven, 00:39:52.18\00:39:54.04 and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it." 00:39:54.07\00:39:57.67 This is a picture of the Gospel. 00:39:57.70\00:40:00.22 Verse 20, "Then Jacob made a vow, saying, 00:40:00.25\00:40:03.23 'If God will be with me 00:40:03.26\00:40:04.70 and will watch over me on this journey I am taking 00:40:04.73\00:40:07.69 and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 00:40:07.72\00:40:10.89 so that I return safely to my father's house, 00:40:10.92\00:40:14.30 then the Lord will be my God and this stone 00:40:14.33\00:40:19.01 that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, 00:40:19.04\00:40:22.66 and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth." 00:40:22.69\00:40:27.69 I cannot forget today, my old father 00:40:31.29\00:40:34.75 who was baptized in his senior years. 00:40:34.78\00:40:38.43 He'd been a Roman Catholic all his life. 00:40:38.46\00:40:41.68 And I can remember my old father, 00:40:41.71\00:40:43.97 sitting with me on the lawn at Camp Hill 00:40:44.00\00:40:49.65 in Brisbane, Southeast Queensland, Australia. 00:40:49.68\00:40:53.42 He said, John you'll tell me true. 00:40:53.45\00:40:57.67 Tell me, how I pay my tithe? 00:40:57.70\00:41:00.87 He said, I don't want to be 00:41:00.90\00:41:02.56 doing this in a half hearted way. 00:41:02.59\00:41:04.90 After he died, we found the words in his Bible. 00:41:04.93\00:41:08.20 For Jesus sake, I will always do my best. 00:41:08.23\00:41:11.35 This old Roman Catholic who became an Adventist Christian. 00:41:11.38\00:41:15.19 I showed him how to tithe. 00:41:15.22\00:41:18.02 Even when he got too sick and couldn't go to church, 00:41:18.05\00:41:21.13 he would send the tithing. 00:41:21.16\00:41:23.11 And that's a part of being a Christian. 00:41:27.37\00:41:32.28 I'll never forget my dad on the front lawn. 00:41:32.31\00:41:34.96 John, show me how to do it. 00:41:34.99\00:41:37.55 I want to introduce right now, 00:41:37.58\00:41:40.21 Blake and Donna Wexler with their children. 00:41:40.24\00:41:43.43 They're going to come, Sydney and Benjamin. 00:41:43.46\00:41:46.78 Blake and Donna. 00:41:46.81\00:41:48.96 We're just so glad to have these dear folks in our church. 00:41:48.99\00:41:54.42 Love you folks a lot.
