that I kept coming up with as

steps and what to do next.

How do I step into recovery?

Someone was talking to me
and this guy was a Vietnam vet.

He had literally killed
somebody at 17 and instead of

going to prison
they sent him to Vietnam.

I don't even understand
what that is all about.
00:01:26.19\00:01:28.12
That they sent him to
Vietnam and he ends up going in
00:01:28.15\00:01:30.70
there and gets into a
drug addiction, gets into rage
00:01:30.73\00:01:32.91
disorder, comes back out
marries this nice Christian girl
00:01:32.94\00:01:36.48
that is very co-dependent.
00:01:36.51\00:01:37.96
But he goes into recovery and
he has really worked with us.
00:01:37.99\00:01:41.80
In fact on season one he
and his wife was on the show.

But now I see him and you
know what, I feel like I have
00:01:44.48\00:01:48.03
done it, but I keep messing up.
00:01:48.06\00:01:51.03
So what is it that
people forget to do in recovery?

I thought about that, what
is that we need to know about

recovery that is
really important?

I looked at a number of
different things and came up

with in AA they call it,
if anybody is going to stumble

around if anybody is
not going to make it, it is
00:02:09.27\00:02:11.96
because they forget this step.

Even in AA they call
up the forgotten steps,

and that is step 6 and 7.

I want to go over that because
the whole season is going to be

on this, it is amazing.

And we need to make that
point that this season is

really the forgotten steps,
those steps that are crucial and

sometimes left out
they can send you right back

down the hill that
you have been trying

to climb all this time.

Exactly, and people if you
are trying to do it, if you

are saying why is it so hard?

Why can't I do this?

Why can't I get
over this one thing?

Why am I plateauing right here?

And it usually is
that you forgot this.

There are a lot people
that say you know what,

I am not into this step thing.

I don't blame you, I didn't
like the step thing, I had

just jumped into church and
was loved by the body of Christ.

I had gotten into the word
of God, but the word of God

says it's a forgotten step.

Even in Galatians 3, I love
this, Galatians 3:1, it says,

"oh foolish Galatians,
who has bewitched that you

shouldn't even obey the truth?"

So somewhere in Galatians
they started out well and did

really good and all of a
sudden they are in trouble.

This is the one
thing that people forget,

and the one thing they
forget is in a step program

it is really clear.

Step number six in NARAA
it says, "at this point we are

entirely ready to
have God remove all our

defects of character. "

So we have looked at that
and have done an inventory.

We know where we have
messed up, you know we are in

porn addiction, drug addiction,
we have eating disorders,
00:03:40.56\00:03:43.08
religious addictions, whatever,
we have all that kind of stuff.

But now what do I do with that?

Yeah, yeah!
00:03:47.18\00:03:48.54
Who cares about all
that, I have all this junk.

Well now you give it to
God, but what most people do

at that time is they look
at all that, they figure it

out, I know that I lie
and manipulate, I know that I

am using, that I am
cheating folks, so I'm going to

set up and do a program.

I'm going to start
doing the right thing.

And they try to
behaviorally change.

You can't do it,
you have to give to God.

So to do it any other way, you
are going to trip yourself up.

So this entire season is
about how and what is that step.

to give it to God?

That's exciting because

told people was that you have

to step outside
yourself because some days,

you're stronger than yourself.

You can through the
exercise of your will,

put that cigarette down.

Then there are other
days when you are weaker than

yourself, and that is when
you defeat yourself because

that day you cannot
by the force of will,

put that cigarette down.

Your lower nature, if I
can use that term, jumps up and

that cigarette is in your
mouth and you are puffing away.

Then you say
why am I doing this?

Well because today you defeated
yourself because you were

drawing from
yourself for strength.

You got to step outside yourself
that is such an important step.

I like the idea that we
have dealt with pulling yourself

up by the bootstrap, we have
dealt with all these kind of

things and we now we are
getting to the core this year.

Long-term success presupposes
that we put it in God's hands.

because we want to do something.

righteousness mean?

think of any other
place that you will get a good

picture of God.

On this step I have to
have a picture of God because

I have to turn it over to Him.

Moving into righteousness
by faith, and something

occurred to me many years ago.

The text I'm going to use,

doesn't do violence to the text.

It's Romans 14:23, summing
it up it says that which is

So even if you get the
victory on something, say,

That is a sin.

Say you stop drinking
alcohol by the force of your

First off your righteousness

you surrender to the Lord,

a biological activity.

you give your life to Christ.

Christ you will stop drinking.

So you do not get points
for not drinking, you get

And that people are like I don't

raging at people anymore.

I don't even grab them

really make me angry.

He's not breaking any
holes in the walls yet.

But all that
anger, all that stuff,

everything that's started
that rage is still right there.

So how do I get that out?

And somebody says well
learn how to not be angry.

Sometimes we are so damaged,
God says trust me on this,

going to let Me abide in you,

in you, teach you.

just being angry, you need to

So I really have put
myself, my wants aside and say

I'm going to do it for, because

every day things.

I used to think of those
things as punishment, and He

things keep you grounded.

That is life affirming stuff.

And it returns you to a sense
of normalcy, because you're

normal routine
has been craziness.

So now you are
getting too real normalcy.

You know what? It is really
weird, if you go to my house

most the time, my sink
is so shiny and I love it.

It never was that way, I
always had dishes stacked up,

stuff and now I really pay

attention and God
was really clear with me.

simple stuff in recovery.

So on this particular

do not have to go out and

Just settle down and deal with
becoming you and becoming whole.

head but this is just one.

damaged with addiction.

track, it is this one track that

the animal instincts to the

When at track gets damaged
you do not get that exchange.

You do a lot of things
out of no self control,

he's like thinking I don't have

outfits, and he's like,
