Welcome back you know this is my favorite part of the 00:00:13.29\00:00:17.04 show where I get to introduce you to someone. 00:00:17.07\00:00:19.17 Especially today because this is a friend of mine. 00:00:19.20\00:00:21.12 Mark I want to say I want I wanted you 00:00:21.15\00:00:22.29 on this show forever. 00:00:22.32\00:00:25.12 So thanks for coming. 00:00:25.15\00:00:26.16 Thank you. 00:00:26.19\00:00:29.11 I want you to tell them where you come from, 00:00:29.14\00:00:31.30 how did you find God, all the kind of stuff that God 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.23 has done in your life. 00:00:34.26\00:00:35.23 I know it all, but I want you to bless them 00:00:35.24\00:00:37.98 with your testimony. 00:00:38.01\00:00:39.41 Alright. 00:00:40.12\00:00:41.09 Well I was born and raised in church. 00:00:41.10\00:00:43.96 My dad was the Pastor but I was a typical Pastor's kid. 00:00:44.00\00:00:46.97 I ran away from everything that was religious, 00:00:47.01\00:00:50.68 everything that was God. 00:00:50.72\00:00:51.93 I really didn't understand, 00:00:51.96\00:00:53.10 have a clue as to what they were talking about 00:00:53.14\00:00:55.44 and I didn't want to live that type of life style. 00:00:55.47\00:00:57.74 So you were like Yeah, no back, back, 00:00:57.78\00:01:01.11 there's a lot of pressure being a Pastor's kid when 00:01:01.14\00:01:03.53 I grew up because there is like three kids and I was 00:01:03.57\00:01:05.92 suppose to be the example. 00:01:05.96\00:01:07.01 Well that is like it's not going to happen so, 00:01:07.05\00:01:09.26 I was an example but it wasn't a good example. 00:01:09.29\00:01:11.47 It was a bad example. 00:01:11.50\00:01:12.67 So I got into a lot of trouble running from God. 00:01:12.71\00:01:16.95 You know I know people that know you as a kid and 00:01:16.99\00:01:21.20 they said you were not a nice kid. 00:01:21.23\00:01:22.22 I was bad. 00:01:22.25\00:01:23.26 I was a heathen. 00:01:23.29\00:01:25.08 Even when they said that to me, 00:01:25.11\00:01:26.27 I said you're kidding me because I loved him and 00:01:26.30\00:01:28.20 they said Oh Man! 00:01:28.23\00:01:30.15 It was, it was rough. 00:01:30.18\00:01:32.13 I was one of those kids that only a 00:01:32.16\00:01:33.26 mother could love. 00:01:33.29\00:01:36.05 I was adopted when I was 5 days old, 00:01:36.08\00:01:38.09 so I never knew biological parents and why that is 00:01:38.12\00:01:41.08 significant in my life is because my mama always 00:01:41.11\00:01:43.14 told me I was special. 00:01:43.17\00:01:45.08 She told me she chose me, so I would pick on my 00:01:45.11\00:01:48.05 brothers and sisters sometimes and tell them oh 00:01:48.08\00:01:49.26 you were just an act of marriage, 00:01:49.29\00:01:51.15 but they chose me, I was special. 00:01:51.18\00:01:52.78 I got my first glimpse of the unconditional love of 00:01:52.81\00:01:57.13 God through understanding that my mom chose me. 00:01:57.16\00:01:59.14 But at the same time it caused problems in life 00:01:59.17\00:02:01.28 because I thought I could do no wrong. 00:02:01.31\00:02:03.25 I mean I would get in trouble and I was the 00:02:03.28\00:02:07.07 chosen one, so it did get really tracked for the 00:02:07.10\00:02:10.29 longest time so again because of that there was 00:02:10.32\00:02:12.28 a lot of pride, there was a lot of striving to be 00:02:12.31\00:02:14.23 something that I wasn't. 00:02:14.27\00:02:15.72 And you were good at most things you started. 00:02:15.75\00:02:17.55 Yeah I been good at... 00:02:17.59\00:02:18.78 Sports all that stuff. 00:02:18.82\00:02:19.94 Sports and in school, a lot of it I didn't 00:02:19.98\00:02:22.31 have to work hard for. 00:02:22.35\00:02:24.23 It just kind of came easy. 00:02:24.26\00:02:27.19 I don't know why people liked me and 00:02:27.22\00:02:28.21 tried to help me out. 00:02:28.24\00:02:29.27 I mean all of my life, even when I was in 00:02:29.30\00:02:31.24 trouble, that people constantly tried to help 00:02:31.27\00:02:34.01 me, no, no, no he's better than that. 00:02:34.04\00:02:36.07 He's got great potential and my mom was leading 00:02:36.10\00:02:38.17 the charge special and so that really played into 00:02:38.20\00:02:42.15 me thinking Oh, I can rule the world, 00:02:42.18\00:02:43.18 I can do anything I want to do. 00:02:43.21\00:02:46.11 So I got into a lot of trouble when I was a kid, 00:02:46.14\00:02:48.17 high school, juvenile hall, drugs, alcohol, 00:02:48.20\00:02:51.63 at a young age, stealing, like I said if... 00:02:51.67\00:02:55.03 You would have taken my computer, wouldn't you've? 00:02:55.07\00:02:58.18 Probably, yes. 00:02:58.21\00:03:00.26 I knew it when you said, And I wouldn't have called 00:03:00.29\00:03:02.04 to actually give it back either. 00:03:02.07\00:03:04.18 Two years later, Oh go ahead. 00:03:04.21\00:03:07.27 Okay, So I got into a lot of trouble like I said, 00:03:07.30\00:03:12.49 juvenile hall and jail and drugs. 00:03:12.52\00:03:15.41 I totally ran opposite of the way I was being 00:03:15.45\00:03:19.24 raised, because I didn't want to be a part of it. 00:03:19.28\00:03:22.63 Through that I somehow got a scholarship to play 00:03:22.67\00:03:26.33 football at Boise State in Idaho and I came from a 00:03:26.36\00:03:29.53 junior college and what's amazing is that even in 00:03:29.56\00:03:32.69 that junior college, I got in trouble 00:03:32.73\00:03:34.37 trying to help people. 00:03:34.41\00:03:36.17 I've always tried to help other people and so I was 00:03:36.21\00:03:37.85 a stupid trouble maker. 00:03:37.89\00:03:39.82 A bad thief, I never did it well. 00:03:39.85\00:03:41.95 What do you mean by that? 00:03:41.99\00:03:43.01 I would get in trouble stealing hot dogs to help feed 00:03:43.05\00:03:46.63 some people, had nothing to do with me. 00:03:46.67\00:03:49.71 Something you needed. 00:03:49.75\00:03:50.74 Nothing I needed, always trying to help people out. 00:03:50.77\00:03:53.24 So that has been inherent in me. 00:03:53.27\00:03:55.22 I just kind of, I facilitated it wrong, 00:03:55.25\00:04:00.14 didn't know that was God wanting to do something 00:04:00.17\00:04:02.10 in a through me so. 00:04:02.13\00:04:05.13 I got in trouble in this junior college, 00:04:05.16\00:04:08.23 and I never will forget, the people basically did 00:04:08.26\00:04:10.01 everything they could do to say no, no, no, 00:04:10.04\00:04:13.26 don't send him to jail, send him off to college, 00:04:13.29\00:04:14.28 it will change his life. 00:04:14.31\00:04:17.07 By all accounts I should have gone to jail. 00:04:17.10\00:04:19.02 I should never been awarded the 00:04:19.05\00:04:21.08 scholarship to go. 00:04:21.11\00:04:23.04 So you ended up going to BSU for football 00:04:23.07\00:04:24.27 rather than jail? 00:04:24.30\00:04:28.07 Yes and so I got to Boise state and played, 00:04:28.10\00:04:30.17 did my thing, kind of the life of the party there, 00:04:30.20\00:04:31.22 I'm special. 00:04:31.25\00:04:34.14 That didn't change, using drugs and playing football 00:04:34.17\00:04:37.24 and all these things and I ended up getting in 00:04:37.27\00:04:39.19 trouble while I was at Boise State. 00:04:39.22\00:04:41.21 So that was kind of a bad thing, 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.23 here's this kid from California comes to Idaho, 00:04:43.26\00:04:45.18 we give him a scholarship, he gets in trouble, 00:04:45.21\00:04:47.24 that didn't really go well. 00:04:47.27\00:04:49.27 You know what cracks me up? 00:04:49.30\00:04:52.15 What was it like coming from LA to Idaho? 00:04:52.18\00:04:54.05 Cause that is a whole different world. 00:04:54.08\00:04:56.14 Well I grew up in Sacramento for junior high 00:04:56.17\00:04:59.24 school, and so forth, so Boise was really like a 00:04:59.27\00:05:02.05 small Sacramento, but actually just coming to 00:05:02.08\00:05:03.23 Boise was different. 00:05:03.26\00:05:04.52 The drinking age, I will never forget, 00:05:04.56\00:05:06.47 you had to be 18, to drink. 00:05:06.51\00:05:08.24 In California you had to be 21, 00:05:08.27\00:05:10.29 because I went to a junior college, 00:05:10.32\00:05:13.10 I came to Idaho right before I was 21, 00:05:13.13\00:05:16.02 and I'm thinking, Oh when I'm 21 I will party 00:05:16.05\00:05:18.19 legally, and all these things. 00:05:18.22\00:05:20.20 And you only had to be 18, and I was thinking, Man, 00:05:20.23\00:05:22.15 I should have been here several years ago. 00:05:22.18\00:05:24.14 Yeah I should have been here a long time ago. 00:05:24.17\00:05:27.23 So I was a little bit older so I actually 00:05:27.26\00:05:29.18 instigated a lot of things. 00:05:29.21\00:05:31.28 Parties and things like that. 00:05:31.31\00:05:33.14 But not really a lot of trouble. 00:05:33.17\00:05:35.10 But I remember I got into trouble, 00:05:35.13\00:05:36.19 I broke into a building while I was still in 00:05:36.22\00:05:39.17 college, and I just remember that the coaches 00:05:39.20\00:05:42.14 were saying do not bring shame to the program, 00:05:42.17\00:05:45.19 so I lied, told them my name was something else so 00:05:45.22\00:05:47.02 that they couldn't track me down. 00:05:47.05\00:05:48.02 There weren't a lot of black people in Idaho at 00:05:48.03\00:05:49.74 that time. 00:05:49.77\00:05:50.74 That's what I was thinking what was that like because 00:05:50.75\00:05:52.98 I know a friend of mine Randy Maxwell, 00:05:53.01\00:05:54.50 you know Randy. 00:05:54.53\00:05:55.55 He's black and in Idaho and I think 00:05:55.58\00:05:58.10 there was only 5 of you. 00:05:58.14\00:05:59.11 Yes, we've increased, we're about 50-65. 00:05:59.12\00:06:03.04 But what is really interesting is that when I 00:06:03.08\00:06:05.03 walk around sometimes with Randy, 00:06:05.06\00:06:06.03 especially years ago, people would stop and 00:06:06.04\00:06:09.33 look, so that had to have been and 00:06:09.36\00:06:11.18 odd thing from LA. 00:06:11.21\00:06:13.54 Well I would wave, people would literally break 00:06:13.57\00:06:16.18 their necks when they drove by I would be like 00:06:16.21\00:06:18.78 HEH! How yea doing? 00:06:18.82\00:06:20.09 I'm always kind of a clown, 00:06:20.12\00:06:22.22 the life of the party you know. 00:06:22.25\00:06:24.27 Singing and doing things so I got in trouble and 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.77 they sent me to prison. 00:06:26.81\00:06:29.06 I had what was like going to be a 4 month rider. 00:06:29.09\00:06:33.02 We'll see, we'll put you in jail for 4 months and 00:06:33.05\00:06:35.05 if everything works out, we will let you go on 00:06:35.08\00:06:37.10 probation if not we will keep you for 5 years. 00:06:37.13\00:06:39.25 I will never forget that I had a Sergeant and a 00:06:39.28\00:06:44.06 Lieutenant that were there and they actually went to 00:06:44.09\00:06:46.01 court in my behalf. 00:06:46.04\00:06:48.00 They said this man does not need to be in jail. 00:06:48.03\00:06:50.04 They didn't know me from anything, 00:06:50.07\00:06:55.08 and those 120 days, I don't think I spent that 00:06:55.11\00:06:57.19 much time with them as I was processing, 00:06:57.22\00:06:59.29 but they went to court on my behalf. 00:06:59.32\00:07:02.08 I just couldn't understand why are you doing it? 00:07:02.11\00:07:04.22 And part of it, I'm special so, 00:07:04.25\00:07:06.07 they recognize that I'm special so 00:07:06.10\00:07:08.03 they're helping me out. 00:07:08.06\00:07:09.06 So consequently I got out of jail early and I was on 00:07:09.10\00:07:12.20 probation, my identity at the time was caught up in 00:07:12.24\00:07:15.31 Boise State football. 00:07:15.35\00:07:16.71 I mean my identity was that I was good, 00:07:16.75\00:07:19.71 and my identity was in that and so once that was 00:07:19.75\00:07:22.50 removed from me, it's back into drugs, 00:07:22.54\00:07:25.68 back into partying, it's back into women, 00:07:25.72\00:07:28.80 it's just back into these things and running from 00:07:28.83\00:07:32.09 what God had ordained. 00:07:32.13\00:07:33.79 And ever when you went back into everything there 00:07:33.82\00:07:35.86 is no reason for you to step up to the plate 00:07:35.90\00:07:37.71 anymore because it's all gone. 00:07:37.75\00:07:39.75 So when your identity is Oh I'm a Boise State 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.34 football player and that's taken away from you, 00:07:42.38\00:07:45.36 for me as a man, I had to have that significance. 00:07:45.40\00:07:48.46 So if I couldn't find it in my athletic ability, 00:07:48.50\00:07:51.53 I'll just be the greatest party animal 00:07:51.56\00:07:53.93 in the whole wide world. 00:07:53.97\00:07:57.17 So a lot of things transpired in that time 00:07:57.20\00:08:00.08 and there were still people willing to go to 00:08:00.11\00:08:02.08 bat for me and help me out. 00:08:02.11\00:08:05.20 So somehow through all these things, 00:08:05.23\00:08:06.29 you know God was watching over me, 00:08:06.32\00:08:08.21 He was covering me. 00:08:08.24\00:08:10.10 But I was still running from God. 00:08:10.13\00:08:13.25 So I ended up getting married in 1991, 00:08:13.28\00:08:16.06 met a gal and got married in 1991 and 00:08:16.09\00:08:18.27 she had a lot of money. 00:08:18.30\00:08:21.01 Just an inheritance. 00:08:21.04\00:08:22.21 I didn't even know. 00:08:22.24\00:08:23.22 I'm just partying. 00:08:23.25\00:08:26.10 Well I didn't know, it ended up we had to have a 00:08:26.13\00:08:27.10 job, had to do something. 00:08:27.11\00:08:28.08 I was like I always wanted to make money, 00:08:28.09\00:08:29.10 I didn't want to live, like I'm just going to 00:08:29.13\00:08:30.15 live off your money. 00:08:30.18\00:08:31.15 I want to do something, so we opened a pub and deli. 00:08:31.16\00:08:34.12 I had 36 beers on tap, it was the largest assortment 00:08:34.16\00:08:37.21 of beer on tap in Idaho at the time. 00:08:37.24\00:08:39.71 We opened a pub and deli, a place called Thornton's, 00:08:39.74\00:08:42.07 The Place to Be! 00:08:42.10\00:08:43.13 Life of the party, Karaoke, 00:08:43.16\00:08:47.06 I am the reason Karaoke made it into Boise in bars. 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.07 So I don't know if that's a good thing 00:08:50.10\00:08:52.19 or a bad thing. 00:08:52.22\00:08:55.27 It's a cool thing. 00:08:55.30\00:08:58.04 I sing, so I figured I'd have my own platform to 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.53 sing, whatever it is that I want to sing. 00:08:59.57\00:09:01.11 So I owned this pub and deli and I didn't really 00:09:01.15\00:09:04.92 drink that much, I smoked a lot of pot. 00:09:04.95\00:09:06.82 I was addicted to Marijuana, 00:09:06.85\00:09:10.92 I didn't know it because I reflect back and every 00:09:10.96\00:09:13.00 morning I would wake up and the first thing that 00:09:13.03\00:09:15.03 I did was I'd smoke. 00:09:15.07\00:09:16.67 Taking the kids to school, you know taking, 00:09:16.70\00:09:20.07 her kids to school. 00:09:20.10\00:09:21.07 I would smoke and driving home, 00:09:21.08\00:09:22.49 it was unnatural for me not to be stoned, not to be high. 00:09:22.52\00:09:28.21 I just want to do a side note, 00:09:28.24\00:09:30.65 because when I work with someone who smokes weed, 00:09:30.69\00:09:32.61 you say I have no problem with that, 00:09:32.64\00:09:34.27 and I said do you do anything with out smoking weed anymore? 00:09:34.30\00:09:36.53 Do you go to a movie, do you go out with your 00:09:36.56\00:09:39.46 friends, and they say like no 00:09:39.49\00:09:40.89 I got to get some weed. 00:09:40.92\00:09:42.16 And I say did you enjoy any part of your life, 00:09:42.20\00:09:44.21 can you have sex without smoking weed? 00:09:44.24\00:09:46.06 It's like every part of their life has to be that 00:09:46.09\00:09:47.27 I have to have some pot first. 00:09:47.30\00:09:50.15 Realizing that people don't think of it as being 00:09:50.18\00:09:54.06 that disruptive in your life is pretty soon you 00:09:54.09\00:09:56.09 are not doing anything without being stoned. 00:09:56.12\00:09:59.08 And I functioned very well so I didn't process that 00:09:59.11\00:10:01.09 I was addicted to this chemical, to this drug. 00:10:01.12\00:10:03.20 So some things were going on at the pub and deli, 00:10:03.23\00:10:07.06 I wasn't selling drugs at all. 00:10:07.09\00:10:10.18 I had too much money, I didn't need to sell any 00:10:10.21\00:10:12.25 drugs, but I knew a lot people who sold drugs. 00:10:12.29\00:10:14.44 What happened is a friend of mine came to me and 00:10:14.48\00:10:16.31 said do you know where I can get some Cocaine. 00:10:16.34\00:10:18.14 I was like I don't have any but 00:10:18.17\00:10:21.58 I know people who have some. 00:10:21.62\00:10:25.00 So I put the two of them together in my office. 00:10:25.03\00:10:26.15 Oh Man! 00:10:26.18\00:10:28.24 It turns out he one guy was a 00:10:28.27\00:10:30.00 confidential informant. 00:10:30.03\00:10:31.04 The purpose was to set me up, 00:10:31.07\00:10:32.20 I don't want to say they were picking on me because 00:10:32.23\00:10:34.28 the color of my skin, probably more because I 00:10:34.31\00:10:36.77 was arrogant and boastful and I didn't do 00:10:36.80\00:10:39.22 authority very well. 00:10:39.26\00:10:41.21 When you've got a lot of money, 00:10:41.24\00:10:43.26 you think you don't have to abide by 00:10:43.29\00:10:44.26 everybody else's rules. 00:10:44.27\00:10:48.03 It was more than that, God was after me. 00:10:48.06\00:10:49.25 So this was just the vessel that was being used 00:10:49.28\00:10:52.20 for God to bring me back to Him. 00:10:52.23\00:10:54.09 So I let them make this transaction in my office 00:10:54.12\00:10:57.17 and they arrested me right in January of 1991. 00:10:57.20\00:11:03.10 But prior to that I'm still living in a mess, 00:11:03.13\00:11:06.14 I'm still living to where I am 00:11:06.17\00:11:08.15 trying to find my place. 00:11:08.18\00:11:10.28 My sister passed away and she was only 34 years old. 00:11:10.31\00:11:13.02 She had ovarian cancer. 00:11:13.05\00:11:15.14 So she passed away and I was, 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.19 I didn't realize it then, but I was so not in a place 00:11:17.22\00:11:19.08 to really even understand or comprehend the significance that 00:11:19.11\00:11:22.64 had to my family. 00:11:22.67\00:11:24.37 I wasn't weeping, hysterically, I wasn't, 00:11:24.41\00:11:28.15 I just didn't have a clue. 00:11:28.18\00:11:29.25 I was just out there, I didn't have a clue. 00:11:29.28\00:11:32.08 So we went back for the funeral and that took 00:11:32.11\00:11:34.16 place, and my mom's my best friend. 00:11:34.19\00:11:36.12 I mean all my life. 00:11:36.15\00:11:38.01 Like I said, I'd be on the video camera stealing the 00:11:38.04\00:11:41.11 candy, stilling the video, Oh that's my baby. 00:11:41.14\00:11:42.15 He wouldn't do that. 00:11:42.18\00:11:45.22 I mean That was my best friend, I'm special. 00:11:45.25\00:11:48.21 So I wasn't really tracking with what was 00:11:48.24\00:11:51.05 going on so I had money and I could help out. 00:11:51.08\00:11:53.23 So my input was financially and things like that then I got 00:11:53.26\00:11:57.69 arrested right after that. 00:11:57.72\00:11:59.11 So delivery of a controlled substance. 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.70 So in Idaho it is punishable up 00:12:01.73\00:12:04.34 to life in prison. 00:12:04.37\00:12:05.40 This would be my third felony at this point. 00:12:05.43\00:12:09.27 When they came to arrest me. 00:12:09.30\00:12:12.13 I have not delivered anything. 00:12:12.16\00:12:14.11 This is how arrogant I was. 00:12:14.14\00:12:16.18 The police man came into my place of business, 00:12:16.21\00:12:18.02 my pub and deli, I'm cooking lunch, 00:12:18.05\00:12:20.12 and he comes in, we have a warrant for your arrest. 00:12:20.15\00:12:21.25 Like a warrant for what? 00:12:21.28\00:12:24.16 I haven't done anything. 00:12:24.19\00:12:25.21 They're like Whoa, we don't know. 00:12:25.24\00:12:27.21 Well like if you are going to arrest me, 00:12:27.24\00:12:29.24 call and find out what I have a warrant for. 00:12:29.27\00:12:32.18 It's the grace of God that they obliged me and went 00:12:32.21\00:12:35.24 along with the thing. 00:12:35.27\00:12:37.05 Well delivery of a controlled substance, 00:12:37.08\00:12:38.20 I'm thinking, I haven't delivered anything. 00:12:38.23\00:12:40.01 I'm like no you've got the wrong person. 00:12:40.04\00:12:43.01 They are like, we are going to have 00:12:43.04\00:12:44.07 to take you to jail. 00:12:44.10\00:12:45.15 I'm like, what's the bond? Well we don't know. 00:12:45.18\00:12:46.65 I'm like well you're going to have to call and find 00:12:46.69\00:12:48.73 out what the bond is cause I'm not going with you. 00:12:48.76\00:12:50.77 Now mind you these people have guns. 00:12:50.80\00:12:55.04 I'm thinking who would do that! 00:12:55.07\00:12:56.18 They have guns and they have authority. 00:12:56.21\00:12:58.10 I was really arrogant. 00:12:58.13\00:12:59.46 They obliged me, it's totally miraculous story 00:12:59.49\00:13:05.00 and they said the bond is $200,000 dollars. 00:13:05.03\00:13:07.18 So I called my wife and said you need to meet me 00:13:07.21\00:13:10.02 at the jail with $200,000 dollar cashier's check 00:13:10.05\00:13:11.37 because they have arrested me for this. 00:13:11.40\00:13:13.42 So she got that all put in order and then the police 00:13:13.46\00:13:16.52 man wanted to take me out through my own business. 00:13:16.55\00:13:18.92 I said no, you are going to have to drive around 00:13:18.95\00:13:20.93 the back and get me because I am not going to 00:13:20.97\00:13:22.91 let you take me through my business. 00:13:22.95\00:13:26.01 So they came around back. 00:13:26.04\00:13:28.15 I'd say shut up there is no way. 00:13:28.19\00:13:30.23 It was amazing thing. 00:13:30.26\00:13:32.70 So I get down to the jail they process me and do 00:13:32.74\00:13:38.25 everything and the bail is like wow, 00:13:38.28\00:13:41.11 I've never seen anybody write a $200,000 00:13:41.14\00:13:42.11 dollar check to bond out. 00:13:42.13\00:13:43.28 I was pretty arrogant. 00:13:43.31\00:13:45.06 Anything short of a million dollars and I'm 00:13:45.09\00:13:47.04 not going to jail. 00:13:47.07\00:13:48.26 That was a bad move, because somehow the judge 00:13:48.29\00:13:51.20 got wind of that particular statement. 00:13:51.23\00:13:53.20 Because it is a controlled substance. 00:13:53.23\00:13:56.02 It's a controlled substance, 00:13:56.05\00:13:58.17 it's a third felony, and because I had a felony I 00:13:58.20\00:14:00.28 had a real, I couldn't have a liquor license so 00:14:00.31\00:14:03.08 it appeared as if I didn't have a job. 00:14:03.11\00:14:05.22 My name is on it, Thornton's The Place To Be, 00:14:05.25\00:14:08.01 but tax wise, there was no money actually coming to 00:14:08.04\00:14:10.02 my name so the argument could be made easily, 00:14:10.05\00:14:12.04 he's selling drugs. 00:14:12.07\00:14:13.19 That's how he's making money. 00:14:13.22\00:14:16.04 But that was a God thing, everybody knew where the 00:14:16.07\00:14:19.07 money came from. 00:14:19.10\00:14:21.17 I go to jail and I'm facing this, 00:14:21.20\00:14:23.05 I'm trying to process how can I get out of it. 00:14:23.08\00:14:25.07 We're going to move to Jamaica, 00:14:25.10\00:14:26.11 we're going to leave, we're leaving the states. 00:14:26.14\00:14:28.16 I'm not going to jail. 00:14:28.19\00:14:30.02 Especially for life. 00:14:30.05\00:14:31.05 They want to send me to jail for life. 00:14:31.08\00:14:33.02 In the process of all that fighting this charge, 00:14:33.05\00:14:36.00 my mom wanted to come to Idaho for Mother's day. 00:14:36.03\00:14:43.08 Because my sister died and she passed away at home so 00:14:43.11\00:14:46.17 she didn't want to be in the house over the 00:14:46.20\00:14:48.14 Mother's day holiday. 00:14:48.17\00:14:50.06 So they came to Boise to visit us for Mother's Day. 00:14:50.09\00:14:53.27 We had a great time, and you know my dad's a 00:14:53.30\00:14:56.10 Pastor, educator, so me playing football, 00:14:56.13\00:14:59.04 me partying and all that stuff, 00:14:59.07\00:15:00.12 was totally contrary to everything he was 00:15:00.15\00:15:03.00 trying to teach me. 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.05 My mom was probably more of a football fan 00:15:04.08\00:15:05.22 than my dad was. 00:15:05.25\00:15:08.06 He said, ah that's silly you need a job, 00:15:08.09\00:15:11.02 education and so I never remember the day, 00:15:11.05\00:15:13.19 the Sunday afterwards, well it was Mother's Day 00:15:13.22\00:15:15.17 Sunday and they were leaving. 00:15:15.20\00:15:16.23 He came and I wanted to show him the pub and deli. 00:15:16.26\00:15:21.28 I through him the deli part, 00:15:21.31\00:15:24.20 you know so he could see it is just a business. 00:15:24.23\00:15:26.06 Not my passion to sell beer, but I mean, 00:15:26.09\00:15:27.22 you make money. 00:15:27.25\00:15:28.22 I remember he was in the bathroom for a long time 00:15:28.23\00:15:31.14 and he finally came out and he just looked at me, 00:15:31.17\00:15:34.18 like son, I'm proud of you. 00:15:34.22\00:15:35.26 I'm not tracking, cause I'm like there is no 00:15:35.30\00:15:39.25 reason he is proud of me cause I own a pub and 00:15:39.28\00:15:42.17 deli, I know my dad. 00:15:42.20\00:15:43.27 That's contrary so I am going like well he is 00:15:43.30\00:15:46.21 maybe just proud of me because of the money. 00:15:46.24\00:15:47.78 I don't have to work for anybody, 00:15:47.81\00:15:48.95 I'm working for myself. 00:15:48.99\00:15:50.05 I just let that go. 00:15:50.08\00:15:51.11 On the way home, they are driving through 00:15:51.14\00:15:55.09 Waimauku, my dad dies. 00:15:55.12\00:15:59.06 So they came to escape the grief of home, 00:15:59.09\00:16:01.02 my sister passing away and on the way home from 00:16:01.05\00:16:03.07 visiting me, my dad passed away. 00:16:03.10\00:16:05.15 Like I said, my mom has been my best friend. 00:16:05.18\00:16:07.14 I got to just tell you I am sorry. 00:16:07.17\00:16:09.11 I'm sorry about your dad. 00:16:09.14\00:16:10.15 It was just, that was rough. 00:16:10.18\00:16:12.04 That was rough, because like I said now I was 00:16:12.07\00:16:14.09 facing what I thought would be life in prison. 00:16:14.12\00:16:16.11 I'm facing the dismantling of my family. 00:16:16.14\00:16:18.42 I knew I would lose my family, 00:16:18.45\00:16:19.83 I knew I would lose all the resources, all the, 00:16:19.86\00:16:22.35 everybody was just there for a good time. 00:16:22.38\00:16:26.77 That would go away if I went to jail. 00:16:26.81\00:16:31.17 I wasn't equipped to in my spirit, 00:16:31.20\00:16:33.14 even though I was a big guy, a tough guy, 00:16:33.17\00:16:34.20 like I said all the trouble I got in, 00:16:34.23\00:16:37.07 I wasn't really a serial criminal. 00:16:37.10\00:16:38.11 I just did stupid things. 00:16:38.14\00:16:43.15 I never did it well, that's how I know I wasn't 00:16:43.18\00:16:45.01 meant to do all that wrong, 00:16:45.04\00:16:46.06 cause I never did it well. 00:16:46.09\00:16:47.14 I was a very stupid criminal. 00:16:47.17\00:16:49.11 I was a very stupid thief, very stupid drug addict, 00:16:49.14\00:16:52.07 I mean all of those things. 00:16:52.10\00:16:53.20 Now I have to deal with my dad dying, 00:16:53.23\00:16:56.23 I have to deal with my mom, because 00:16:56.26\00:16:59.04 my concern is for my mom. 00:16:59.07\00:17:01.09 Going to jail. 00:17:01.12\00:17:02.21 You are facing going to jail. 00:17:02.24\00:17:04.04 Yeah and there us no way I can tell my mom. 00:17:04.07\00:17:05.13 She's got her husband and her daughter. 00:17:05.16\00:17:07.15 She is grieving, my daughter. 00:17:07.18\00:17:10.17 My mom had three young children and so she had 00:17:10.20\00:17:13.19 taken custody over those three young children. 00:17:13.22\00:17:16.25 So she has the children, all of these things, 00:17:16.28\00:17:18.02 now my dad died. 00:17:18.05\00:17:20.16 I'll never forget that. 00:17:20.19\00:17:22.06 I don't know how I'm going to tell, 00:17:22.09\00:17:23.06 I can't say anything. 00:17:23.07\00:17:25.19 So I went home for the funeral, 00:17:25.22\00:17:27.21 for my dad's funeral. 00:17:27.24\00:17:30.01 Backtracking just a moment, they told me, 00:17:30.04\00:17:31.09 because of this court case, 00:17:31.12\00:17:32.23 you can't leave the state without telling us. 00:17:32.26\00:17:35.04 Without getting permission. 00:17:35.07\00:17:37.19 I was like arrogant, I will not be calling you to 00:17:37.22\00:17:39.29 ask you if I can go to my dad's funeral. 00:17:39.32\00:17:42.16 So I just left. 00:17:42.19\00:17:44.19 I just left. 00:17:44.22\00:17:46.27 When I get down there my sister's were in church, 00:17:46.30\00:17:48.18 helped build the church. 00:17:48.21\00:17:50.26 You know we have been in church all of our lives. 00:17:50.29\00:17:55.13 My sisters could tell something was wrong with me. 00:17:55.16\00:17:58.22 I didn't tell them anything. 00:17:58.25\00:18:00.12 So they pulled me into a room, and like Mark, 00:18:00.15\00:18:02.09 what's wrong, because you didn't grieve this hard 00:18:02.12\00:18:05.05 at Twana, my sister's funeral and 00:18:05.08\00:18:06.05 something is just wrong. 00:18:06.07\00:18:08.03 So I had to unleash and let them know Heh, 00:18:08.06\00:18:10.06 they are trying to put me in jail for the rest of my 00:18:10.09\00:18:13.05 life for something that I really didn't do. 00:18:13.08\00:18:15.05 How can I tell mom and I'm going to lose this, 00:18:15.08\00:18:17.10 and that, and they told me something 00:18:17.13\00:18:19.11 I will never forget. 00:18:19.14\00:18:21.05 Mark this is spiritual warfare. 00:18:21.08\00:18:23.04 God's got a plan for your life, 00:18:23.07\00:18:25.16 and the devil is trying to thwart that 00:18:25.19\00:18:26.23 plan for your life. 00:18:26.26\00:18:29.24 And I am yeah whatever, but how is that going to 00:18:29.27\00:18:31.00 keep me out of jail. 00:18:31.03\00:18:32.00 We can't ever wrap our mind around that. 00:18:32.03\00:18:33.26 What are you talking about I'm talking serious, 00:18:33.29\00:18:35.10 real stuff here. 00:18:35.13\00:18:37.14 And they are like, so are we. 00:18:37.17\00:18:40.15 They were trying to explain that to me and I'm 00:18:40.18\00:18:41.25 like I'm not telling mom. 00:18:41.28\00:18:42.25 They are like well you just wait until like what 00:18:42.26\00:18:45.09 is going to happen. 00:18:45.12\00:18:46.09 I don't know I've got enough money to buy a 00:18:47.20\00:18:49.01 lawyer, I mean if money could have bought you out 00:18:49.04\00:18:50.27 of trouble, I would have been out of trouble. 00:18:50.30\00:18:52.26 Cause there was no resource that I didn't 00:18:52.29\00:18:56.26 have financially to be able to get out of this 00:18:56.29\00:18:58.02 mess, if that really could do it. 00:18:58.05\00:19:00.02 But God had other plans. 00:19:00.05\00:19:01.24 So what happened, I'm dying to hear. 00:19:01.27\00:19:04.21 My dad passes away, we do the funeral thing. 00:19:04.24\00:19:06.14 I come back, on my way back a friend of mine that 00:19:06.17\00:19:09.17 worked for me, he calls me up and tells me that a 00:19:09.20\00:19:11.08 gal that works at the airport said the police 00:19:11.11\00:19:14.20 were there and they were going to arrest 00:19:14.23\00:19:16.24 me when I got back. 00:19:16.27\00:19:19.07 So I just wanted to let you know they found out 00:19:19.10\00:19:20.23 you were gone and they are going to arrest you 00:19:20.26\00:19:22.07 when you get back. 00:19:22.10\00:19:24.03 So I flew to Salt Lake, bought a van cash, 00:19:24.06\00:19:28.18 and drove home to Boise. 00:19:28.21\00:19:29.18 Yes we drove into Boise. 00:19:29.19\00:19:32.12 That night packed up a pretty large house. 00:19:32.15\00:19:34.02 Movers came a packed a pretty large house, 00:19:34.05\00:19:35.15 bought another house on the other side of town, 00:19:35.18\00:19:37.21 moved there so the next time the police came to my 00:19:37.24\00:19:39.18 house looking for me, it was empty. 00:19:39.21\00:19:41.08 Don't try this at home. 00:19:41.11\00:19:44.09 No don't, please don't do this. 00:19:44.12\00:19:49.02 It happened to be the same police that came to arrest 00:19:49.05\00:19:50.23 me the first time. 00:19:50.26\00:19:53.27 So I go through this whole process and I ended up 00:19:53.30\00:19:55.03 turning myself in. 00:19:55.06\00:19:57.14 I went to court. 00:19:57.17\00:19:59.03 I just want to see the look on the police officer 00:19:59.06\00:20:02.02 when he comes to the house and sees he moved. 00:20:02.05\00:20:04.12 I hate this guy. 00:20:04.15\00:20:05.12 With that guy it gets better, it gets better. 00:20:05.13\00:20:08.51 I ended up getting a sentence three to ten, 00:20:08.55\00:20:12.06 3 fixed and up to ten years. 00:20:12.09\00:20:13.28 I'm thinking I'm gong to loose my family. 00:20:13.31\00:20:15.23 I remember telling the judge, 00:20:15.26\00:20:17.03 I'm going to lose my family. 00:20:17.06\00:20:18.15 No your family is going to be fine, 00:20:18.18\00:20:19.15 everything is going to be fine. 00:20:19.18\00:20:21.26 I'm thinking, I know people who manufacture 00:20:21.29\00:20:23.28 drugs, I'll tell on them and I remember the 00:20:23.31\00:20:26.10 prosecutor saying, Mr. Thornton, 00:20:26.13\00:20:27.28 we just want you. 00:20:27.32\00:20:28.42 We don't need anybody else, we just want you. 00:20:28.45\00:20:30.72 I'm thinking, I can't get out of it. 00:20:30.76\00:20:33.29 My mom still doesn't know. 00:20:33.32\00:20:36.00 So I'm in jail and I go through this process and 00:20:36.03\00:20:38.07 appeals things and all these and now it looks 00:20:38.10\00:20:39.28 like you're not going to get out of jail. 00:20:39.31\00:20:42.06 So now I have to tell my mom, 00:20:42.09\00:20:43.28 this my dad died in May, Mother's Day, 00:20:43.31\00:20:46.18 I didn't tell my mom until August. 00:20:46.21\00:20:48.26 I'm in a jail cell, a prison cell and I'm having 00:20:48.29\00:20:50.23 to call collect and tell my mom Heh this, 00:20:50.26\00:20:53.18 I'm in prison, I'm going to be here possibly up to 00:20:53.21\00:20:56.87 ten years and this is my best friend. 00:20:56.90\00:21:00.10 I can't even imagine her heart. 00:21:00.13\00:21:03.01 This is what she told me. 00:21:03.04\00:21:04.23 She said son, I have to wash my hands of you. 00:21:04.26\00:21:07.14 You are not going to kill me. 00:21:07.17\00:21:09.28 Now I am devastated, I'm in jail, 00:21:09.31\00:21:11.13 money can't get me out of jail. 00:21:11.16\00:21:13.03 My last resort, which has been my last resort all 00:21:13.06\00:21:16.10 my life, my mom's love, unconditional love, 00:21:16.13\00:21:18.91 special, we chose you. 00:21:18.94\00:21:20.12 Made that statement to me, broke my heart, 00:21:20.16\00:21:22.28 I hung up the phone and I could understand where 00:21:22.31\00:21:24.22 she was coming from. 00:21:24.25\00:21:25.49 It was at that moment. 00:21:25.52\00:21:27.04 Knew she had to do it. 00:21:27.08\00:21:28.56 Knew she did. 00:21:28.59\00:21:29.56 It was at that moment, that every scripture that 00:21:29.57\00:21:33.50 I had ever heard, memorized in a children's 00:21:33.53\00:21:36.28 play, saw on the wall, I'll never leave you 00:21:36.32\00:21:39.03 nor forsake you. 00:21:39.07\00:21:40.66 All those scriptures, every song that I ever 00:21:40.70\00:21:44.71 sung in church, it all came back to me. 00:21:44.74\00:21:47.09 In the jail cell, Lord I'm yours. 00:21:47.13\00:21:50.25 What ever you want I'll do it. 00:21:50.28\00:21:53.24 If this is the end result, then I'll serve you here. 00:21:53.27\00:21:56.07 If I lived a thousand miles an hour for the 00:21:56.10\00:21:58.04 world, I'll live a thousand ten miles 00:21:58.07\00:21:59.18 an hour for You. 00:21:59.21\00:22:03.11 That started a remarkable journey. 00:22:03.14\00:22:07.00 From that point I was committed, 00:22:07.03\00:22:08.16 that's okay if my wife leaves me, 00:22:08.19\00:22:10.05 if my mom that's okay. 00:22:10.08\00:22:12.25 I got God and I put my face in the Bible. 00:22:12.28\00:22:14.21 And you felt it, you felt His presence and 00:22:14.24\00:22:15.21 His love overwhelming. 00:22:15.22\00:22:17.08 When they say a jailhouse conversion, you know. 00:22:17.11\00:22:19.11 We laugh at that sometimes, 00:22:19.14\00:22:22.10 yeah and when he gets Out he's going to be the same, 00:22:22.13\00:22:23.24 but I've always been the kind of type that once I 00:22:23.27\00:22:25.27 made up my mind to do Something, 00:22:25.30\00:22:27.24 I was going to do it. 00:22:27.27\00:22:28.29 I tried everything else, I mean there was not a drug, 00:22:28.32\00:22:31.08 You know that I hadn't tried, probably. 00:22:31.11\00:22:33.28 There probably was, but in my mind anything that I 00:22:33.31\00:22:36.03 Wanted to do, I did it. 00:22:36.06\00:22:37.23 There was not a party, I mean I had done everything 00:22:37.26\00:22:40.19 that I could possibly do. 00:22:40.22\00:22:42.18 I was like, you know what, Lord I am going to serve You. 00:22:42.21\00:22:45.10 I remember the Lord gave me a song, 00:22:45.13\00:22:47.02 in that jail cell. 00:22:47.06\00:22:49.63 I did that so I get out, got my Bible. 00:22:49.66\00:22:51.50 Wait, wait, wait, what's the song, do you remember? 00:22:51.54\00:22:53.30 Can you sing some of it? 00:22:53.33\00:22:54.39 Yeah what He's done for me. 00:22:54.42\00:22:55.41 You gave me your shoulder, When I wanted to cry, 00:22:55.45\00:23:01.53 You gave me lasting hope, When I wanted to die, 00:23:01.56\00:23:07.37 You are my friend, yes, When I was all alone, 00:23:07.40\00:23:13.18 You reached out Your hand to me, 00:23:13.21\00:23:18.13 So I could make it home. 00:23:18.16\00:23:20.27 You know I talked about there was times I wanted to die. 00:23:20.30\00:23:22.81 When I wanted to give up, but God wouldn't 00:23:22.84\00:23:24.64 let me, give up. 00:23:24.67\00:23:26.19 He said no, I called you for a purpose and I'm going to use you 00:23:26.22\00:23:29.11 I don't know how he is going to use me, 00:23:29.15\00:23:30.56 or when he is going to use me, 00:23:30.59\00:23:31.75 I'm thinking I must be a jail preacher. 00:23:31.78\00:23:33.35 I plugged into the chapel. 00:23:33.39\00:23:36.29 And I'm doing all these things. 00:23:36.32\00:23:38.24 The journey started, I felt like 00:23:38.27\00:23:39.27 Joseph in prison. 00:23:39.30\00:23:41.19 Because there was a measure of favor that was 00:23:41.22\00:23:44.01 applied to me that wasn't applied to 00:23:44.04\00:23:46.26 any other inmate. 00:23:46.29\00:23:47.34 I have big feet, I wear six 15 shoes. 00:23:47.38\00:23:49.53 They didn't have boots or tennis shoes to fit me and 00:23:49.56\00:23:53.17 they could care less whether I had shoes, 00:23:53.20\00:23:55.40 but did still have a lawyer at the time, 00:23:55.44\00:23:57.57 so I got two pairs of my own shoes in. 00:23:57.61\00:23:59.67 So now I'm walking around in prison with my own 00:23:59.71\00:24:01.51 tennis shoes, which you think no, okay, 00:24:01.55\00:24:04.02 but that's a big deal. 00:24:04.06\00:24:05.16 Everybody else had state issued, 00:24:05.20\00:24:07.33 I got Jordan's you know. 00:24:07.36\00:24:08.59 Some nice walking shoes. 00:24:09.23\00:24:10.71 It started with that and they made me, 00:24:10.75\00:24:14.13 I started working at the chapel, 00:24:14.16\00:24:15.81 everybody's lifting weights you know. 00:24:15.85\00:24:17.76 I'm a big guy so they think he's going to lift weights. 00:24:17.80\00:24:18.96 I was athletic, they think he is going to 00:24:19.78\00:24:20.75 play on the basketball team. 00:24:20.78\00:24:21.75 I'm like, no, I am not going to do that stuff. 00:24:21.76\00:24:23.31 I'm going to run after God. 00:24:23.35\00:24:24.60 Occasionally I would play basketball, 00:24:24.63\00:24:27.21 it's amazing thing. 00:24:27.25\00:24:29.03 I'm losing wife, my wife is having an 00:24:29.06\00:24:31.12 affair with this guy. 00:24:31.15\00:24:34.19 I find out about it, they think that I don't know. 00:24:34.22\00:24:36.47 This guy comes on the volunteer team out to the 00:24:36.50\00:24:38.71 prison to play basketball. 00:24:38.75\00:24:39.78 Yes, this is like adding the injury to insult. 00:24:39.81\00:24:43.05 And I'm, like everything within me, 00:24:43.08\00:24:44.86 Everything within me, and the Lord is like, 00:24:44.89\00:24:47.70 you know you brought this on yourself. 00:24:47.73\00:24:49.00 So you deal with the fall out of your actions. 00:24:49.04\00:24:52.69 Really, up until that point, 00:24:52.72\00:24:54.51 I had never taken responsibility for things 00:24:54.54\00:24:57.12 that I had done. 00:24:57.15\00:24:58.40 So, he was probably scared of me, but you know what? 00:24:58.43\00:25:01.87 I'm not mad at you. 00:25:01.90\00:25:03.22 Can I just say, Mark, cause I don't 00:25:03.26\00:25:06.20 want to lose this. 00:25:06.23\00:25:07.20 For most addicts for most people that God is calling 00:25:07.21\00:25:09.54 back to sanity, back to their right mind, 00:25:09.57\00:25:12.34 is the biggest step is to take responsibility, 00:25:12.38\00:25:15.22 to look at what you have done in your life, 00:25:15.25\00:25:17.08 and say you know what? 00:25:17.11\00:25:18.10 All this I brought on myself, 00:25:18.13\00:25:21.03 all this is because of the choices I've made. 00:25:21.06\00:25:23.03 And there is a freedom in that, 00:25:23.06\00:25:24.08 this is because of what I chose, 00:25:24.11\00:25:25.25 I'm going to choose different in Christ. 00:25:25.28\00:25:28.26 It is, I took a class in thinking classes like what 00:25:28.29\00:25:32.00 is your part in it. 00:25:32.03\00:25:33.25 That was one of the biggest thing that every 00:25:33.28\00:25:34.78 happened to me, I had to process, God is faithful. 00:25:34.82\00:25:37.96 When He says, I'm the Lord thy God I changeth not. 00:25:38.00\00:25:41.11 He means exactly what He says. 00:25:41.14\00:25:43.28 He's faithful so there is a problem with my 00:25:43.32\00:25:45.44 relationship with God, it's me. 00:25:45.48\00:25:46.81 It's not God's fault and so I had to come to that 00:25:46.85\00:25:49.03 realization and that understanding. 00:25:49.06\00:25:50.60 So I am working in the chapel, 00:25:50.64\00:25:51.99 I'm doing these things, and there was a big 00:25:52.03\00:25:54.12 fallout, a big, big fight and you know I have always 00:25:54.15\00:25:57.59 tried to help other people out. 00:25:57.62\00:25:59.06 So somehow I got myself involved in this, 00:25:59.10\00:26:01.31 it was none of my business. 00:26:01.35\00:26:02.32 I got myself involved, I made the decision, 00:26:02.33\00:26:04.14 I am going to take care of this situation. 00:26:04.17\00:26:06.15 Well, they ended up moving me to the farm. 00:26:06.18\00:26:08.15 Which is minimum security next day so I couldn't do 00:26:08.18\00:26:11.21 any further damage to me. 00:26:11.24\00:26:14.28 The Lord showed me later on that my life was 00:26:14.31\00:26:17.15 literally in danger, with white supremacist, 00:26:17.18\00:26:20.93 people who wanted to, gangs and nobody is going 00:26:20.97\00:26:24.68 to mess with me. 00:26:24.71\00:26:25.68 I'm Mark Thornton, I'm... 00:26:25.69\00:26:26.83 The Lord showed me NO! 00:26:26.86\00:26:28.09 I had a hedge of protection over you so 00:26:28.12\00:26:30.04 that they couldn't touch you. 00:26:30.07\00:26:31.13 So I go to the farm, I'm working on the farm 00:26:31.16\00:26:33.09 in the Chapel. 00:26:33.12\00:26:34.25 I'm the Chaplin in there so I am preaching, 00:26:34.28\00:26:36.86 we know our church is praise and worship today. 00:26:36.90\00:26:39.17 In traditional black churches you sing hymns. 00:26:39.20\00:26:41.40 And the choir processions in so I don't have a clue 00:26:41.44\00:26:44.03 about praise and worship, but God is using me to 00:26:44.06\00:26:46.61 lead praise and worship. 00:26:46.65\00:26:47.83 To preach the message. 00:26:47.86\00:26:48.97 Then there is this thing about Promise-Keepers. 00:26:49.01\00:26:52.26 So we are saying Oh that would be neat. 00:26:52.30\00:26:54.53 We're minimum security so maybe we could go. 00:26:54.57\00:26:56.89 So I orchestrate all these things to get to go to 00:26:56.92\00:27:00.89 Promise-Keepers then I made a mistake. 00:27:00.92\00:27:02.96 I sent, you can have your own personal property 00:27:03.00\00:27:06.02 which I had really too much of. 00:27:06.06\00:27:07.54 I mean I had a Walkman's, tapes, books, 00:27:07.57\00:27:10.89 and your only suppose to have so much personal 00:27:10.92\00:27:13.03 property, but because of the favor of 00:27:13.07\00:27:15.35 God, it really was. 00:27:15.38\00:27:16.53 I was in charge of a couple different programs, 00:27:16.56\00:27:18.10 I had like about 3 or 4 people's worth 00:27:18.14\00:27:21.52 of personal property. 00:27:21.56\00:27:22.58 I had it stored in other people's lockers. 00:27:22.62\00:27:25.77 The police knew it, the guards knew it. 00:27:25.81\00:27:28.92 and they, well that's Thornton. 00:27:28.96\00:27:30.08 But you know what's real interesting is most people 00:27:30.12\00:27:32.60 don't understand in a prison environment you are 00:27:32.64\00:27:35.09 the man then. 00:27:35.13\00:27:36.12 I mean what you have, even the little 00:27:36.15\00:27:38.12 you have, it's status. 00:27:38.15\00:27:40.07 Yeah that's all you have so I had all these things 00:27:40.10\00:27:42.09 and my own shoes, clothes, like I said 00:27:42.12\00:27:45.20 books, tapes, Walkman. 00:27:45.23\00:27:47.26 I'd walk around singing. 00:27:47.29\00:27:49.13 Why does Thornton gets to have it? 00:27:49.16\00:27:51.06 Because I'm involved in the programs, 00:27:51.09\00:27:52.19 programs and security are two different things. 00:27:52.23\00:27:54.23 There's the people who processing security, 00:27:54.26\00:27:56.22 that's all they care about. 00:27:56.26\00:27:57.51 So if you're walking around with head phones on 00:27:57.54\00:27:59.76 and stuff, they are like, wait a minute, 00:27:59.80\00:28:01.41 how does he get to do that? 00:28:01.45\00:28:05.02 But the deputy warden of programs, 00:28:05.05\00:28:07.28 no he can have this because of this, 00:28:07.31\00:28:08.28 because of that. 00:28:08.29\00:28:09.26 Unmerited favor, I mean honestly through the 00:28:09.27\00:28:12.01 whole, my whole time in prison. 00:28:12.05\00:28:13.64 So pride starts creeping in and I had actually too 00:28:13.67\00:28:17.18 much personal property so I sent some out, 00:28:17.21\00:28:20.44 but it wasn't the proper way. 00:28:20.48\00:28:22.20 The Warden finds out and he removes me from my 00:28:22.23\00:28:25.49 position as running the chapel and makes me pick 00:28:25.53\00:28:28.75 up cigarette butts. 00:28:28.79\00:28:29.79 Now I don't like cigarette butts, can't stand smoke, 00:28:29.82\00:28:32.03 it bothers me. 00:28:32.06\00:28:33.03 So to me that was the worse thing 00:28:33.05\00:28:35.12 you could have done. 00:28:35.15\00:28:36.19 Yeah make me pick up cigarette butts and I 00:28:36.22\00:28:38.13 don't even smoke. 00:28:38.16\00:28:39.28 So I did it with humility and I didn't ask for my 00:28:39.31\00:28:43.05 position back or anything. 00:28:43.08\00:28:44.13 I still had to orchestrate this Promise-Keepers trip even 00:28:44.16\00:28:47.02 though I wasn't going. 00:28:47.05\00:28:48.16 So pride is being killed in me slowly, but surely. 00:28:48.19\00:28:51.78 By God's mercy! 00:28:51.82\00:28:54.17 By the grace of God, definitely. 00:28:54.21\00:28:57.13 Cause it would destroy you. 00:28:57.16\00:28:58.21 Yeap, it would have, it had already gotten me to 00:28:58.24\00:29:00.36 the place that I was at. 00:29:00.40\00:29:01.80 So I will never forget, one day the Warden was 00:29:01.83\00:29:04.34 walking by and I'm two months into picking up cigarette butts. 00:29:04.37\00:29:06.75 I'm like, Mr. Warden can I have my job back? 00:29:06.79\00:29:09.28 He's like, have you learned a lesson? 00:29:09.31\00:29:10.97 I'm like, I have learned a whole lot of lessons. 00:29:11.00\00:29:13.15 So he's like sure, go tell the Lieutenant and so he's 00:29:13.18\00:29:16.26 gave me my job back and I'm like afraid to ask, 00:29:16.29\00:29:18.39 can I go to Promise-Keepers. 00:29:18.43\00:29:20.08 But I was just like, I would let that go. 00:29:20.11\00:29:22.03 The Chaplin, you know the staff Chaplin decides who 00:29:22.07\00:29:24.85 was going to go. 00:29:24.88\00:29:25.85 And he comes up an tells me the Warden has decided 00:29:25.86\00:29:27.96 to let you go to the Promise-Keepers event. 00:29:27.99\00:29:30.64 So in 1995, I leave prison with the group of guys in 00:29:30.68\00:29:35.06 our blue jeans and blue shirts and we go to this 00:29:35.09\00:29:38.72 Promise-Keepers conference and I'll never forget. 00:29:38.76\00:29:41.62 One of the Pastors took me up to Wellington Boone 00:29:41.65\00:29:44.31 Dr. Wellington Boone, says this man's in prison, 00:29:44.35\00:29:46.88 he's at Promise-Keepers, and he said WHAT! 00:29:46.92\00:29:49.90 It was kind of funny so he wanted me to share some of 00:29:49.94\00:29:52.64 the things that was going on. 00:29:52.67\00:29:53.80 In front of everybody? 00:29:53.83\00:29:55.61 Well I didn't get up at that time, 00:29:55.64\00:29:57.11 but just with the Pastor, with Wellington Boone at the time. 00:29:57.14\00:30:00.10 So we go back to prison, life had changed. 00:30:00.14\00:30:02.93 Life had changed for me, God was doing great things. 00:30:02.97\00:30:05.17 So now comes time for my parole. 00:30:05.20\00:30:06.55 And honestly if you looked up the word changed in the 00:30:06.58\00:30:10.07 dictionary, my picture would have been there. 00:30:10.11\00:30:12.66 I mean because there was a 180 degree change. 00:30:12.69\00:30:15.21 It was God working in me. 00:30:15.24\00:30:16.60 And it was your desire for the change now. 00:30:16.64\00:30:18.97 Yeah, totally not me, it was God moving in me. 00:30:19.00\00:30:22.59 I go to the, my mom came, and my wife that I'm 00:30:22.62\00:30:26.17 married to now, my wife had divorced me, 00:30:26.21\00:30:27.97 moved my kids away. 00:30:28.00\00:30:29.07 I hadn't seen my kids for two years. 00:30:29.11\00:30:30.35 So I literally lost my family. 00:30:30.39\00:30:33.10 Did they leave the states. 00:30:33.14\00:30:34.11 They left the state and went to Ohio. 00:30:34.12\00:30:36.70 I didn't find that out till I got out. 00:30:36.73\00:30:39.24 I'll come back and share because that is another 00:30:39.27\00:30:41.97 miraculous thing that God did. 00:30:42.00\00:30:43.39 I go to parole hearing and I've got this 00:30:43.42\00:30:45.97 dissertation ready to share with the parole board. 00:30:46.01\00:30:49.46 They let my mom say something, 00:30:49.50\00:30:51.77 they asked my brother, he didn't 00:30:51.80\00:30:54.04 have nothing to say. 00:30:54.07\00:30:55.04 I'm thinking, what are you doing say something. 00:30:55.05\00:30:56.38 That was it, the guy asked me, 00:30:56.41\00:30:58.58 you play football at Boise State? 00:30:58.61\00:31:00.74 I'm like yeah! 00:31:00.78\00:31:01.85 Okay that's all. 00:31:01.89\00:31:02.89 Like okay you can be dismissed, 00:31:02.92\00:31:04.36 I'm thinking no, wait, wait. 00:31:04.40\00:31:05.73 I've got something to say. 00:31:05.77\00:31:07.04 They're like Mr. Thornton we don't need 00:31:07.07\00:31:09.02 to hear from you. 00:31:09.05\00:31:10.02 I'm thinking, they are not going to let me go. 00:31:10.03\00:31:12.92 I mean they are not going to let me go. 00:31:12.96\00:31:14.38 I remember going back there and I was praying in 00:31:14.42\00:31:16.98 the room and I come back out and they are like this 00:31:17.01\00:31:19.54 is June of 1995. 00:31:19.57\00:31:22.97 Okay we are going to give you a parole date for 00:31:23.00\00:31:25.12 October, I was like in my spirit, October! 00:31:25.15\00:31:29.83 What do you mean October! 00:31:29.87\00:31:31.56 I was upset. 00:31:31.59\00:31:32.79 Oh I was upset and I went back into the room and the 00:31:32.83\00:31:37.38 Spirit of the Lord spoke to me, 00:31:37.42\00:31:39.48 How ungrateful are you going to be? 00:31:39.52\00:31:41.52 I fell to my knees and I wept, Lord I am sorry. 00:31:41.55\00:31:47.29 Now I don't see how Gods working so had I gotten 00:31:47.32\00:31:51.57 out of prison that day, I had no place to live, 00:31:51.60\00:31:55.82 I had no money, I had nothing. 00:31:55.85\00:31:59.14 Your wife, is gone. 00:31:59.18\00:32:00.21 I've got no nothing. 00:32:00.25\00:32:01.22 I God kind of orchestrated to go to a work center, 00:32:01.25\00:32:04.04 I got a job doing steel construction. 00:32:04.07\00:32:06.60 I had never done any construction 00:32:06.63\00:32:09.12 in my life before. 00:32:09.16\00:32:10.17 When I went in to talk to the guy, 00:32:10.21\00:32:11.89 the only thing, this is what I can do. 00:32:11.92\00:32:13.53 I have computer skills, I'm a human fork lift. 00:32:13.57\00:32:16.42 I can sing. 00:32:16.45\00:32:17.44 They didn't want any singers at the time. 00:32:17.48\00:32:19.83 The only thing you have to take a chance 00:32:19.87\00:32:22.18 on is my character. 00:32:22.22\00:32:23.21 I'll never forget, He said Mr. Thornton, I'm not concerned 00:32:23.25\00:32:25.36 about your character. 00:32:25.40\00:32:26.37 I'm like, you don't even know me. 00:32:26.38\00:32:27.75 So anyway I got a job and Davis - Bacon, federal wages. 00:32:27.78\00:32:31.22 I get a job and I'm making like $27.00 an hour plus 00:32:31.25\00:32:34.65 $5.00 and hour benefits. 00:32:34.69\00:32:36.21 I cannot hit a hammer on a nail. 00:32:36.24\00:32:38.96 I know that seems, no I am so not that guy. 00:32:38.99\00:32:41.60 My wife did not let me have power tools. 00:32:41.64\00:32:43.92 None of that stuff because I am not guy. 00:32:43.96\00:32:46.21 I got a job making this much money, 00:32:46.24\00:32:48.21 and I'm in a work release program. 00:32:48.25\00:32:50.18 I'm in jail. 00:32:50.21\00:32:51.37 God is orchestrating all of these things together. 00:32:51.41\00:32:54.29 When it was time for me to get out, 00:32:54.33\00:32:56.50 this lady who use to come out to the prisons, 00:32:56.53\00:32:58.99 her son is still out there. 00:32:59.03\00:33:01.53 She said well you can stay at our house. 00:33:01.57\00:33:02.84 I'm thinking you don't even know, 00:33:02.87\00:33:05.05 I've seen you minister at the Chapel while you were 00:33:05.08\00:33:07.80 in jail, you can stay at our house. 00:33:07.83\00:33:08.87 You don't have to pay any rent. 00:33:08.91\00:33:10.28 So people just trusted you. 00:33:10.32\00:33:11.62 It sounds like God just had His hand on you and 00:33:11.66\00:33:13.44 open doors, one door after another 00:33:13.47\00:33:15.74 at your coming out. 00:33:15.77\00:33:16.87 Yeah and that was amazing because I was so totally 00:33:16.91\00:33:18.64 undeserving of any of the favors, 00:33:18.68\00:33:20.86 any of the blessings that they bestowed upon me 00:33:20.89\00:33:22.98 because my previous lifestyle. 00:33:23.01\00:33:25.60 So you know what I want to ask Mark? 00:33:25.63\00:33:27.18 I know that you are standing in ministry in a 00:33:27.22\00:33:29.57 number of different places, 00:33:29.61\00:33:30.71 I want to know how that happened. 00:33:30.75\00:33:32.26 How God stand you up in ministry in the places 00:33:32.30\00:33:36.03 that you are in right now? 00:33:36.06\00:33:37.05 Well I started volunteering in 00:33:37.08\00:33:39.28 Promise-Keepers, then I ended up getting hired 00:33:39.31\00:33:41.18 part time to do that. 00:33:41.21\00:33:46.13 So I would travel around the Northwest now 00:33:46.16\00:33:49.18 ministering to men, sharing with men the 00:33:49.21\00:33:50.23 gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:33:50.26\00:33:51.27 I went to one church to try to use their building 00:33:51.31\00:33:54.03 for an event and met the Pastor and 00:33:54.06\00:33:57.35 attended a service there. 00:33:57.38\00:33:58.38 The Holy Spirit was just thick in that place, 00:33:58.41\00:34:01.24 Oh my God, I'm going to end up going to church here. 00:34:01.27\00:34:04.12 I will never forget, he, I didn't know he knew me, 00:34:04.15\00:34:06.96 he called me to his office one day. 00:34:06.99\00:34:08.75 He said God said you are going to 00:34:08.79\00:34:10.51 be my worship leader. 00:34:10.54\00:34:11.51 I'm like, Okay, you don't know God. 00:34:11.52\00:34:14.40 He should tell me. 00:34:14.43\00:34:16.32 I'm thinking you don't know my story, 00:34:16.36\00:34:17.91 you don't know. 00:34:17.95\00:34:18.92 He's like I know all about you and God told me this 00:34:18.93\00:34:21.02 and so he moved me into a position of actually 00:34:21.06\00:34:24.43 ushering people into the presence of God, 00:34:24.46\00:34:26.29 which I really didn't have a clue. 00:34:26.32\00:34:28.00 It was a great learning process, 00:34:28.03\00:34:29.96 so through that and discipleship. 00:34:29.99\00:34:31.85 Do you know that if I'm having a hard time and I 00:34:31.88\00:34:34.93 just want to be blessed that I will come to the 00:34:34.97\00:34:37.80 worship and to the prayer just because I know you 00:34:37.84\00:34:40.64 are gifted in that way. 00:34:40.67\00:34:41.70 That I know you love God and that 00:34:41.73\00:34:43.90 God has His hand on you. 00:34:43.93\00:34:45.04 I am blessed just by watching you minister to other people. 00:34:45.08\00:34:48.58 Well it's good to be used by the Lord and to be 00:34:48.61\00:34:51.87 faithful to what He's called you to. 00:34:51.90\00:34:54.28 What a change in what you were doing. 00:34:54.31\00:34:55.28 Oh Yeah. 00:34:55.30\00:34:57.02 I was about me and now it is about God, 00:34:57.05\00:34:58.22 that's really my passion now. 00:34:58.25\00:35:00.17 to be able to help people experience. 00:35:00.20\00:35:02.15 You can't tell the arrogance from your past. 00:35:02.18\00:35:03.19 I have never seen you arrogant. 00:35:03.22\00:35:05.15 I have never, cause I met you in Christ. 00:35:05.18\00:35:07.17 I have never seen you arrogant so that cracks me 00:35:07.20\00:35:09.03 up that God can take somebody and change them 00:35:09.06\00:35:11.20 so much that people are going what! 00:35:11.23\00:35:14.01 Mark arrogant! 00:35:14.04\00:35:15.01 What are you talking about. 00:35:15.04\00:35:16.29 A true, humbling experience will change you around. 00:35:16.32\00:35:19.18 I had to depend on God and He didn't fail me. 00:35:19.21\00:35:20.87 He didn't leave me, He didn't forsake me, 00:35:20.91\00:35:22.47 He did what He said He was going to do. 00:35:22.50\00:35:24.19 I like sharing that with people now. 00:35:24.22\00:35:25.87 And He made mama proud. 00:35:25.90\00:35:27.17 He made mama proud and so yes now she invites me to 00:35:27.21\00:35:30.34 her church, this is my son in whom I'm well pleased, 00:35:30.37\00:35:33.47 I go and minister there but I've been 00:35:33.50\00:35:35.53 in full-time ministry for ten years now. 00:35:35.57\00:35:37.56 A little bit over ten years. 00:35:37.60\00:35:39.01 I'm still amazed that God would use somebody like me. 00:35:39.04\00:35:42.53 And your kids are with you. 00:35:42.56\00:35:43.53 My kids are with me now. 00:35:43.54\00:35:44.51 Through a bunch of different circumstances 00:35:44.52\00:35:45.93 they are with me. 00:35:45.97\00:35:46.96 Everybody's in some type of ministry. 00:35:46.99\00:35:48.85 Like if daddy's singing and preaching, 00:35:48.89\00:35:50.71 somebody's got to run the camera, 00:35:51.29\00:35:52.26 learn to play the piano, read a prayer, or something. 00:35:52.27\00:35:55.33 Your son came up to me one time and ministered to me, 00:35:55.36\00:35:58.47 you were doing something, and he just ministered and 00:35:58.51\00:36:01.58 told me a little bit of his testimony. 00:36:01.62\00:36:02.91 I thought you are so Mark's son. 00:36:02.95\00:36:04.75 It's been great, God is ah, 00:36:04.78\00:36:07.18 I've been to Kenya three times. 00:36:07.22\00:36:09.59 Doing what! 00:36:09.62\00:36:12.17 Ministering to kids, and ministering 00:36:12.20\00:36:14.76 to the lost there. 00:36:14.79\00:36:16.39 So three times there, it is just remarkable 00:36:16.43\00:36:19.48 God has opened these doors because 00:36:19.52\00:36:21.09 I've attempted to be faithful. 00:36:21.12\00:36:23.37 Oh! 00:36:23.41\00:36:24.38 Shut up cause you know what, 00:36:24.39\00:36:25.36 I'm such am opportunist, you know that. 00:36:25.37\00:36:26.80 I've got you on air, so would you go somewhere 00:36:26.83\00:36:29.98 with us some time? 00:36:30.01\00:36:30.98 I'll go with you, I'm ready to go. 00:36:30.99\00:36:32.20 Wherever somebody needs to know about the love of 00:36:32.24\00:36:35.34 Jesus Christ, to see an example that 00:36:35.38\00:36:37.50 He can do great things. 00:36:37.53\00:36:38.92 What God began He'll finish, I'm ready to go. 00:36:42.17\00:36:43.45 Regardless, he began it as a child with you, 00:36:43.49\00:36:44.73 even though you fought the whole time, 00:36:44.77\00:36:46.75 decided to do your own thing. 00:36:46.78\00:36:47.99 Almost took yourself out. 00:36:48.02\00:36:49.69 He said, you know what! 00:36:49.73\00:36:51.33 I haven't took My hand off you. 00:36:51.36\00:36:52.82 You are special. 00:36:52.85\00:36:54.08 You have been chosen. 00:36:54.12\00:36:55.58 This has been a great year just, my purpose, 00:36:55.61\00:36:59.59 I've been in full-time ministry, like I said ten years. 00:37:00.06\00:37:01.30 God didn't just call me to ministry in the church, 00:37:01.34\00:37:03.84 He said there is people who are lost and dying. 00:37:03.88\00:37:06.34 Jesus didn't minister in the synagogues, 00:37:06.38\00:37:07.89 He ministered in the streets. 00:37:07.93\00:37:09.07 So God, it's like that's what I called you to do. 00:37:09.11\00:37:11.22 Somebody in the streets needs 00:37:11.25\00:37:12.29 to hear your testimony. 00:37:12.33\00:37:13.34 Somebody in the streets needs to share in the 00:37:15.05\00:37:16.49 anointing that you share in so I want you to go. 00:37:16.52\00:37:18.36 For the longest time I was like I'm comfortable here 00:37:18.40\00:37:20.21 in the church. 00:37:20.24\00:37:21.21 I mean this is a great place but the Lord is like 00:37:21.22\00:37:23.00 this is what I want you to do. 00:37:23.03\00:37:25.29 When I saw you on January 1st, 00:37:25.32\00:37:27.05 I had already made that decision 00:37:27.08\00:37:28.78 and doors started opening. 00:37:28.81\00:37:30.41 I was like WOW! 00:37:30.45\00:37:31.67 Once you make up your mind to follow after God and 00:37:31.70\00:37:34.78 let Him do what He said He would do, there's no end. 00:37:34.82\00:37:37.86 It's like He takes your breath away. 00:37:37.90\00:37:40.58 He's like you know what I have no idea you were 00:37:40.62\00:37:42.56 serious about this using me thing. 00:37:42.59\00:37:44.57 I mean it's amazing and I'm excited about the 00:37:44.60\00:37:47.45 opportunity to be, if God can use me, 00:37:47.49\00:37:50.07 if He can do what He did in my life, 00:37:50.10\00:37:52.58 He can do it in anybody's life. 00:37:52.62\00:37:54.73 And He's willing. 00:37:54.77\00:37:55.74 You know what, look in the camera and tell them that. 00:37:55.75\00:37:57.45 So on the mountain of ashes, 00:37:57.49\00:38:00.30 from you burnt up mistakes, 00:38:00.34\00:38:03.09 God will give you a platform to minister to 00:38:03.12\00:38:06.21 the lost, to the dying, and to the hurting. 00:38:06.24\00:38:09.32 He can use you, just like He used Moses, 00:38:09.36\00:38:12.37 just like He used David, Just like He used me. 00:38:12.41\00:38:14.99 God is faithful if you just trust Him. 00:38:15.03\00:38:17.33 And as He stands you up as a man of God, 00:38:17.36\00:38:19.59 it is really interesting to me is that the Bible 00:38:19.63\00:38:23.63 say's we're the light of the world. 00:38:23.67\00:38:24.85 We're the light of the world. 00:38:24.89\00:38:26.26 We bring God colors to the world. 00:38:26.29\00:38:28.09 I think that in our damage we think, 00:38:28.13\00:38:29.90 how does that happen. 00:38:29.93\00:38:30.90 How can that happen? 00:38:30.91\00:38:31.88 God says that is not even for you to concern 00:38:31.89\00:38:33.78 yourself about with. 00:38:33.82\00:38:34.79 I will do it. 00:38:34.80\00:38:35.77 You just stand up, stay true with your relationship with Me. 00:38:35.78\00:38:39.05 How cool is that! 00:38:39.08\00:38:40.95 Make yourself available. 00:38:40.99\00:38:41.96 I want to have you come back after the break and 00:38:41.97\00:38:44.51 sing a song for us so I want to say stay with us. 00:38:44.55\00:38:47.16 Just remember I don't care who you are, 00:38:47.19\00:38:49.76 I don't care where you are, 00:38:49.80\00:38:50.92 everyone of us is special, chosen by God. 00:38:50.96\00:38:53.95 Everyone of us is adopted into His family because 00:38:53.98\00:38:57.83 He wanted us there. 00:38:57.86\00:38:58.96 So know that when Mark talks about being special, 00:38:58.99\00:39:01.40 we are all special and it's way cool. 00:39:03.62\00:39:04.92 Stay with us, We'll be right back! 00:39:04.96\00:39:06.19
