Welcome to Celebrating Life in Recovery I'm Cheri your host. 00:00:10.77\00:00:13.81 And today we are going to look at the fact that in 00:00:13.84\00:00:17.08 recovery everything matters. 00:00:17.11\00:00:18.74 Hypocrisy's once said let food be your medicine and 00:00:18.77\00:00:22.59 medicine be your food. 00:00:22.62\00:00:23.71 So we are going to look at the healing value of food. 00:00:23.74\00:00:26.56 Come on and join us this is going to be good stuff. 00:00:26.59\00:00:28.83 That's brilliant, welcome back. 00:00:55.78\00:00:57.86 I love doing this show, I love bringing stuff to the 00:00:57.89\00:01:01.56 table, I love talking about issues and today we're going 00:01:01.59\00:01:04.88 to do something a little bit different and it is 00:01:04.91\00:01:06.53 going to be a lot of fun. 00:01:06.56\00:01:07.66 I'm not even going to tell you I'm going to 00:01:07.69\00:01:09.05 surprise you with it. 00:01:09.08\00:01:10.05 First of all I want to start out with the book for 00:01:10.06\00:01:12.37 this season Exalting His Word by Shelly Quinn. 00:01:12.40\00:01:15.08 And in one of the section she covers the fact that God 00:01:15.11\00:01:17.83 is a God of new beginnings. 00:01:17.86\00:01:19.43 And that is right God is a God of new beginnings. 00:01:19.46\00:01:21.53 His love and compassion never fail, Lamentations 00:01:21.56\00:01:24.22 3:22,23, say that His mercies are new every morning. 00:01:24.25\00:01:28.12 I am so grateful for that because I'm a mess. 00:01:28.15\00:01:30.35 And if it wasn't the fact that God says today, new day 00:01:30.38\00:01:33.31 let's start over, I don't know that I would be able to 00:01:33.34\00:01:36.22 survive all the different things that I have to do. 00:01:36.25\00:01:38.40 And I want so badly to convince my friends in recovery, 00:01:38.43\00:01:41.54 convince you that every single thing matters. 00:01:41.57\00:01:44.21 That for one you can't stay up for 3 or 4 days at a 00:01:44.24\00:01:47.12 time, I'm talking to my Meth addict friends out there, 00:01:47.15\00:01:49.45 and have it not make you crazy. 00:01:49.48\00:01:51.52 In fact for people that are more normal you can't stay 00:01:51.55\00:01:54.32 up until 11, 12, 1, 2 in the morning and think you are 00:01:54.35\00:01:57.19 going to function the next day, or actually the next few days. 00:01:57.22\00:02:00.18 Because our body has to catch up on itself so everything 00:02:00.21\00:02:03.66 you do matters. 00:02:03.69\00:02:05.72 I'm going to say that a lot this show. 00:02:05.75\00:02:07.28 Like me for instance, I want to be skinny and in health. 00:02:07.31\00:02:12.52 I want to be fit, but I also want to eat ice cream every 00:02:12.55\00:02:15.71 single day, and lots of it, you know what I mean! 00:02:15.74\00:02:18.33 God is trying to show me, you know Hon, and He shows me 00:02:18.36\00:02:22.03 through the Holy Spirit, the Bible, through teaching that 00:02:22.06\00:02:24.86 ice cream is fighting against the goals I have for health. 00:02:24.89\00:02:28.35 In some the things I'm doing maybe fighting against the 00:02:28.38\00:02:32.11 very goals I have in recovery. 00:02:32.14\00:02:34.10 So He is just trying help me pay attention. 00:02:34.13\00:02:36.67 I talk with sex addicts that are just damaged and that 00:02:36.70\00:02:40.21 is our ministry and we work with all kinds of different 00:02:40.24\00:02:42.40 addictions, but talking with sex addicts or porn 00:02:42.43\00:02:45.49 addicts they will say, you know what I want to so not 00:02:45.52\00:02:47.97 get messed up with all that junk. 00:02:48.00\00:02:50.95 Then I tell them just tell me what your day is like. 00:02:50.98\00:02:55.07 They say by the end of the day 11 or 12 at night I will 00:02:55.10\00:02:58.81 sit at the computer, I'm thinking shut up. 00:02:58.84\00:03:01.77 So out of 11 or 12 at night you will sit at the 00:03:01.80\00:03:04.54 computer, that is where you start your surfing and 00:03:04.57\00:03:06.99 you don't think you're going to end up on 00:03:07.02\00:03:08.10 some really goofy sites? 00:03:08.13\00:03:09.65 I'm telling you that everything matters. 00:03:09.68\00:03:12.04 Don't turn the computer on after 8 if you have a 00:03:12.07\00:03:14.93 porn addiction, don't do it! 00:03:14.96\00:03:16.56 Because before 8 we have more control and 00:03:16.59\00:03:18.69 I just think that is true. 00:03:18.72\00:03:19.92 I want to tell you a story about a guy in recovery. 00:03:19.95\00:03:24.08 He has some sexual addictions, he is trying his 00:03:24.11\00:03:28.07 hardest and white knuckling it. 00:03:28.10\00:03:29.69 He is doing whatever he can to not act out sexually. 00:03:29.72\00:03:34.15 He is having some stress at home, the stress is 00:03:34.18\00:03:38.15 getting worse and worse and he tends to act out if he 00:03:38.18\00:03:41.29 is being disrespected or get stressed out. 00:03:41.32\00:03:43.86 All of a sudden his boss is on him, his wife, 00:03:43.89\00:03:46.90 he is distancing himself from her, 00:03:46.93\00:03:49.15 because of the stress at home. 00:03:49.18\00:03:50.22 He says one day after work I'm just going to go and get 00:03:50.25\00:03:53.40 myself a Pepsi, and so he goes to the normal store that 00:03:53.43\00:03:57.59 he always goes to. 00:03:57.62\00:03:58.90 The Pepsi is right there and he walks 00:03:58.93\00:04:01.26 over and grabs it. 00:04:01.29\00:04:02.31 Right next were the Pepsi is in some of those magazines, 00:04:02.34\00:04:06.10 you know what magazine I'm talking about. 00:04:06.13\00:04:08.26 Magazines with a lot of women in it, a lot of sexual stuff 00:04:08.29\00:04:12.24 and he picks up a magazine. 00:04:12.27\00:04:13.84 So he buys the magazine and a Pepsi and goes home. 00:04:13.87\00:04:16.19 Within hours he's acting out and doing things he shouldn't do. 00:04:16.22\00:04:19.76 He gets in his car and is cruising around town looking 00:04:19.79\00:04:23.11 at prostitutes and all that kind of stuff. 00:04:23.14\00:04:25.84 He comes home and is acting out some more and he starts to 00:04:25.87\00:04:29.18 have really some horrible guilt. 00:04:29.21\00:04:31.89 By the end of the day he's acted out like crazy, 00:04:31.92\00:04:33.97 he's guilt kicks in and all that kind of stuff. 00:04:34.00\00:04:36.04 So he goes to his accountability partner and you know 00:04:36.07\00:04:39.49 what they tell him? 00:04:39.52\00:04:40.49 Anybody want to, you want to, 00:04:40.50\00:04:42.90 what do you think they tell him? 00:04:42.93\00:04:44.37 Hang in there or something. 00:04:44.40\00:04:47.33 You'll love what they actually tell him, stop drinking Pepsi. 00:04:47.36\00:04:50.77 Is that right - yeah! 00:04:50.80\00:04:52.28 Wow - so everything starts when you buy that Pepsi, 00:04:52.31\00:04:55.13 don't buy that so again everything matters. 00:04:55.16\00:04:59.40 It's not so much the acting out at the very end of 00:04:59.43\00:05:02.26 something, it's not so much the first bite of ice cream 00:05:02.29\00:05:04.49 I take, it is that every single little thing matters. 00:05:04.52\00:05:07.23 There's, what's that saying? 00:05:07.26\00:05:10.00 There's a saying that little foxes destroy the field 00:05:10.03\00:05:13.94 or something, I mean it's just the little things. 00:05:13.97\00:05:15.80 So everything matters and I want to introduce 00:05:15.83\00:05:17.81 you now to Nyse Collins. 00:05:17.84\00:05:19.54 Nyse I've been waiting for this show forever, I love your 00:05:19.57\00:05:23.10 ministry, I love what you are going to bring to the 00:05:23.13\00:05:24.92 table for us and I want you to just say a little bit 00:05:24.95\00:05:30.42 about what your ministry is and what got you into that. 00:05:30.45\00:05:33.35 Ultimately we are NLC, what we are basically medical 00:05:33.38\00:05:38.99 missionaries turned evangelist, we bring it into the nutshell, 00:05:39.02\00:05:41.24 under a consultant umbrella. 00:05:41.27\00:05:42.77 Our goal is to work with different businesses, groups, 00:05:42.80\00:05:45.16 and churches and stuff like that. 00:05:45.19\00:05:46.54 To provide the information where they can live a 00:05:46.57\00:05:48.28 healthier lifestyle - so healthier lifestyle so you 00:05:48.31\00:05:52.11 can give me a pill or something? 00:05:52.14\00:05:53.24 Oh no it's not that easy - Oh! shut up! 00:05:53.27\00:05:55.03 It is not that easy. 00:05:55.06\00:05:56.12 If it was that easy there were be no disease in this world, 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.95 I mean all of us just eat some apples and we're good you know. 00:05:58.98\00:06:02.00 It is not that easy because diet is one part of it, 00:06:02.03\00:06:05.26 but especially when we are working with different 00:06:05.29\00:06:07.29 addictions and items like that. 00:06:07.32\00:06:08.62 After we do our session, because in a workplace you 00:06:08.65\00:06:11.59 cannot talk about Christian views and stuff, 00:06:11.62\00:06:13.57 we offer consultations. 00:06:13.60\00:06:15.31 Then when we work with individuals on a one-to-one 00:06:15.34\00:06:17.58 basis, than it is like we open up a can of veggie worms, 00:06:17.61\00:06:21.53 you know what I mean! 00:06:21.56\00:06:22.53 It just starts popping out and person who had high 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.58 blood pressure or something like that is not just 00:06:24.61\00:06:27.12 because they have been eating too much salt. 00:06:27.15\00:06:28.94 Maybe they had another situation - porn addiction 00:06:28.97\00:06:32.15 porn addiction or other situations that when stress 00:06:32.18\00:06:35.70 is involved in it, stress alone will cause 00:06:35.73\00:06:38.46 the pressure to go up. 00:06:38.49\00:06:39.74 So we looked at that and try to identify the true core, 00:06:39.77\00:06:42.08 the true character of that situation, then by God's 00:06:42.11\00:06:44.88 grace let's eliminate that problem and then we 00:06:44.91\00:06:48.07 can look at some things in our diet and stuff like that 00:06:48.10\00:06:50.38 You're going to hate the next thing I have 00:06:50.41\00:06:51.78 to say to you - okay. 00:06:51.81\00:06:52.81 You are just a baby, you're just a baby, what got you 00:06:52.84\00:06:55.94 into this - let's say that we are all children 00:06:55.97\00:06:58.71 of Christ, so I figure I'm in the same category. 00:06:58.74\00:07:01.39 Yes! I'm not as mature if you want to put it 00:07:01.42\00:07:05.64 that way - as blessed in years. 00:07:05.67\00:07:07.41 Right! Right! But what happens is I've had a chance to 00:07:07.44\00:07:10.71 taken advantage of the opportunity of my mom. 00:07:10.74\00:07:13.32 Even though I did not turn out the best, she did 00:07:13.35\00:07:15.57 anything and everything on the block. 00:07:15.60\00:07:17.50 5 kids, 4 dads, that only tells you about one addiction. 00:07:17.53\00:07:21.96 She tried every and any drug, a matter of fact even when 00:07:21.99\00:07:24.91 she was pregnant with me, she was out 6 months drinking. 00:07:24.94\00:07:28.20 She fainted and the bartender said Miss, which is more 00:07:28.23\00:07:33.89 important to you, that Vodka or what's in your stomach? 00:07:33.92\00:07:37.17 Your baby - or the baby and it was a little 00:07:37.20\00:07:40.63 wake-up call for her. 00:07:40.66\00:07:41.90 If you notice I'm off a little bit, if something is 00:07:41.93\00:07:45.11 wrong here you'll understand why, I'm just kidding. 00:07:45.14\00:07:47.29 So to me the fact that you have that background so 00:07:47.32\00:07:52.09 you'll understand that what I am saying, everything matters. 00:07:52.12\00:07:54.65 In addiction and recovery everything matters. 00:07:54.68\00:07:56.92 When I first got into addiction and the recovery what 00:07:56.95\00:08:00.91 was really interesting to me was, somebody said, 00:08:00.94\00:08:02.78 you have to drink more water. 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.11 I'm thinking oh yuck! Give me some Tequila. 00:08:04.14\00:08:06.80 That is definitely true we work with a lot of our 00:08:06.83\00:08:10.60 clients who, as a matter of fact I just came back from 00:08:10.63\00:08:13.72 one of my clients, they were severely dehydrated. 00:08:13.75\00:08:17.35 All they want is Pepsi, they love, I can't call the 00:08:17.38\00:08:23.10 name, but a certain kind of drink that they mix up. 00:08:23.13\00:08:25.92 They will drink every other poison and they are 00:08:25.95\00:08:28.94 concerned about drinking tap water. 00:08:28.97\00:08:31.20 There are too much contaminants in the pipes, I'm 00:08:31.23\00:08:34.46 like wait a second you just drank that Pepsi and 00:08:34.49\00:08:36.59 the first ingredient is acid. 00:08:36.62\00:08:38.75 So why are you not concerned about that? 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.88 But yes it's definitely all involved, for those who 00:08:40.91\00:08:44.79 are recovering, they may skip out on that item they 00:08:44.82\00:08:48.16 were dealing with, that addiction before but have 00:08:48.19\00:08:50.15 substituted now with the biggest addiction which 00:08:50.18\00:08:52.64 is probably caffeine - right! 00:08:52.67\00:08:54.31 Or sugar or different items like that, or - so you are 00:08:54.34\00:08:57.55 saying now you must have been to a twelve step group. 00:08:57.58\00:08:59.79 Twelve step group I came in, but clouds of smoke that 00:08:59.82\00:09:04.47 came out of that room was amazing. 00:09:04.50\00:09:05.84 People were slamming coffee, smoking cigarettes and 00:09:05.87\00:09:08.16 eating like pastries or chips. 00:09:08.19\00:09:10.14 I'm thinking, I can even use my brain, I can't even 00:09:10.17\00:09:14.09 think and I need to stay in recovery. 00:09:14.12\00:09:17.30 I am begging people now to pay attention to that because 00:09:17.33\00:09:21.67 you cannot, you are going to trip yourself up just by 00:09:21.70\00:09:24.59 coffee, cigarettes, caffeine and all that kind of stuff. 00:09:24.62\00:09:27.48 True recovery is not eliminating just that one 00:09:27.51\00:09:32.95 situation, true recovery is not just transitioning 00:09:32.98\00:09:36.01 your past addiction to another addiction 00:09:36.04\00:09:38.09 if you follow me there. 00:09:38.12\00:09:39.29 True recovery is abstaining or freedom from all other 00:09:39.32\00:09:43.52 items, not substituting my drugs, or my alcohol. 00:09:43.55\00:09:47.16 Some people don't realize that shopping is an addiction. 00:09:47.19\00:09:49.85 Oh stop! Your off the show. If I known you were going 00:09:49.88\00:09:56.62 there you wouldn't even been invited - I'm sorry. 00:09:56.65\00:09:58.85 And the reason I mention that, the reason I mention that 00:09:58.88\00:10:01.31 it's because a lot of times I work with certain clients, 00:10:01.34\00:10:03.76 ladies, who have severe high cholesterol. 00:10:03.79\00:10:07.51 Why do I have high cholesterol I'm eating right, I'm a 00:10:07.54\00:10:10.86 total vegetarian and we look at the whole situation, 00:10:10.89\00:10:13.66 come to find out they have to work 17 hours a day. 00:10:13.69\00:10:16.22 So they can pay their credit cards off - so ask the 00:10:16.25\00:10:18.87 question, why do you work so much. 00:10:18.90\00:10:20.33 Well I have over $8,000 dollars in credit card bills. 00:10:20.36\00:10:23.65 Which credit card, a certain store brand, 00:10:23.68\00:10:26.83 and I'm like is that really necessary? 00:10:26.86\00:10:29.36 So we helped them - everything matters - right 00:10:29.39\00:10:31.27 everything matters we can help them with their 00:10:31.30\00:10:32.91 cholesterol but that did not solve the problem. 00:10:32.94\00:10:35.97 We could have helped them with heroin, we can helped them with 00:10:36.00\00:10:38.39 crack or whatever, but what is the true cause, 00:10:38.42\00:10:40.28 what is the true cause of that problems? 00:10:40.31\00:10:42.56 So once you identify the true cause that is there, then 00:10:42.59\00:10:45.35 they won't, because what happened with that certain 00:10:45.38\00:10:47.45 client, she switched from shopping to eating. 00:10:47.48\00:10:50.77 So not she's not spending big money on clothes, 00:10:50.80\00:10:53.56 but what happened now she is spending big money 00:10:53.59\00:10:56.59 on going out to restaurants. 00:10:56.62\00:10:57.92 I'm like we didn't - and gaining weight, and adding on 00:10:57.95\00:11:00.94 those extra blessings you know what I mean! 00:11:00.97\00:11:02.94 Which causes low self extreme which causes you want to 00:11:02.97\00:11:04.83 shop - and then what happens it comes right back around 00:11:04.86\00:11:07.50 and she ends up doing the same thing again. 00:11:07.53\00:11:09.80 It's a whole picture, she said what shall we do. 00:11:09.83\00:11:12.92 Number one yes we have to pray, God has given us certain 00:11:12.95\00:11:16.08 guidelines to accept Him and remove yourself from these 00:11:16.11\00:11:19.62 things, but remember you have to have a plan. 00:11:19.65\00:11:21.80 If you don't have a plan you're just setting yourself 00:11:21.83\00:11:24.12 up for trouble - Amen! 00:11:24.15\00:11:25.12 What I love, when I first saw you administering as 00:11:25.13\00:11:29.36 far as health goes, I kept thinking I have to have 00:11:29.39\00:11:31.78 you on the show because I love the fact of giving 00:11:31.81\00:11:34.03 people freedom to understand that everything matters. 00:11:34.06\00:11:36.68 If I'm going to stop a certain addiction, never drink 00:11:36.71\00:11:41.60 anything but water for the first month. 00:11:41.63\00:11:43.86 That sounds like it's really going to kill some one, 00:11:43.89\00:11:46.98 but actually it's going to give you health. 00:11:47.01\00:11:48.59 It is being able to say that just add one or two 00:11:48.62\00:11:52.11 things in that actually will help you to start to get 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.36 your body thinking clearly again. 00:11:54.39\00:11:56.98 Your addictions will then fall off easier. 00:11:57.01\00:11:58.95 Here's another situation, you remove yourself from that 00:11:58.98\00:12:01.85 problem but then you predispose yourself because now 00:12:01.88\00:12:05.10 you're doing all the chocolate cakes in the world. 00:12:05.13\00:12:07.55 And then I love that - I'm sorry, so now you are 00:12:07.58\00:12:12.07 doing all the chocolate cakes in the world and you 00:12:12.10\00:12:13.77 have an increased amount of sugar which sends 00:12:13.80\00:12:15.60 you on a super high real quick. 00:12:15.63\00:12:17.29 In a couple minutes or an hour you will come crashing 00:12:17.32\00:12:19.95 right back down, now you are depressed again. 00:12:19.98\00:12:21.70 Actually some people switch it out with - but 00:12:21.73\00:12:23.97 you don't have to worry about that because 00:12:24.00\00:12:25.76 I can take an antidepressant. 00:12:25.79\00:12:26.97 You see there we go again, we consider medication a mop 00:12:27.00\00:12:31.47 to the problem. 00:12:31.50\00:12:32.91 Me and my buddies always say if you go inside of a 00:12:32.94\00:12:34.75 kitchen in the sink is clogged up in the water faucet 00:12:34.78\00:12:38.47 is on and the water is overflowing, what is the first 00:12:38.50\00:12:40.54 thing we are going to do? 00:12:40.57\00:12:41.54 Are we going to start mopping, are we going to turn off 00:12:41.55\00:12:43.39 the faucet, are we going unplug the faucet, which one? 00:12:43.42\00:12:45.64 It's like hopefully I'm going to go and try to unplug 00:12:45.67\00:12:48.89 stuff - right so you can unplug which is one solution. 00:12:48.92\00:12:52.67 Medicine comes in and just start mopping. 00:12:52.70\00:12:55.02 What we suggest is to get to the source of the problem. 00:12:55.05\00:12:57.57 Let's turn off the what? The faucet! 00:12:57.60\00:13:00.12 Then un-plug, and that I'm plugging is what we are going 00:13:00.15\00:13:03.29 to be talking about detoxifying. 00:13:03.32\00:13:04.64 We unplug this situation, cleaning out the body, then we 00:13:04.67\00:13:08.45 are going to go ahead and mop up. 00:13:08.48\00:13:09.57 So we got to the source of the problem and what the 00:13:09.60\00:13:11.56 medication does it keeps mopping. 00:13:11.59\00:13:13.24 What happens, it keeps overflowing. 00:13:13.27\00:13:14.96 So we are into 2008 now, right! 00:13:14.99\00:13:17.83 I just saw a study in the study was showing how the 00:13:17.86\00:13:21.38 antidepressants are so not working, you know most of the 00:13:21.41\00:13:25.23 country is taking different antidepressants. 00:13:25.26\00:13:27.60 And I'm exaggerating for sure a lot of people are taking 00:13:27.63\00:13:30.94 them and the studies are showing that they did just kind 00:13:30.97\00:13:33.78 of mop up the water. 00:13:33.81\00:13:34.86 Didn't do anything else - it didn't solve the problem. 00:13:34.89\00:13:36.76 It didn't solve the problem and so the fact that we 00:13:36.79\00:13:39.83 really can solve the problem if we pay attention. 00:13:39.86\00:13:42.88 Pay attention and start doing some simple things. 00:13:42.91\00:13:45.70 That is the ultimate goal. 00:13:45.73\00:13:47.10 What do you mean by a schedule? 00:13:47.13\00:13:48.84 Man there is nothing better than every morning spending 00:13:48.87\00:13:51.45 that little quality, said little it should be a lot of 00:13:51.48\00:13:54.62 quality time with God. 00:13:54.65\00:13:56.47 If you don't do that you just might as well quit. 00:13:56.50\00:13:59.24 You might as well run to the local store by all the junk 00:13:59.27\00:14:01.80 food or do this because you set yourself up, 00:14:01.83\00:14:04.50 so that quality time is the most important. 00:14:04.53\00:14:06.48 Second item, lowers tell people sometimes like to 00:14:06.51\00:14:09.59 exercise before I spend that time. 00:14:09.62\00:14:11.82 And the reason why is that a lot of people wake up n the 00:14:11.85\00:14:13.68 morning and grab their Bibles and say Lord I'm going to 00:14:13.71\00:14:16.15 study Your work today and an hour later they are asleep. 00:14:16.18\00:14:20.41 They are in the word literally. 00:14:20.44\00:14:21.56 So we say go out and get some fresh air, clean your 00:14:21.59\00:14:24.94 system and eliminate the toxins - get the sun on your 00:14:24.97\00:14:27.62 skin - yeah and get that run in and start off with a 00:14:27.65\00:14:30.61 good solid, solid breakfast. 00:14:30.64\00:14:33.01 So we start with the spiritual food and now we need to 00:14:33.04\00:14:35.51 make sure we at the physical food. 00:14:35.54\00:14:37.62 Now I don't want to miss this one thing I didn't realize 00:14:37.65\00:14:39.88 in recovery is I think for years I didn't breath. 00:14:39.91\00:14:44.45 You know my breathing was so shallow and when somebody 00:14:44.48\00:14:47.21 said let me teach you to breath, and I'm thinking what 00:14:47.24\00:14:49.81 are you talking about, how crazy is that. 00:14:49.84\00:14:51.50 Talk about just breathing when you go out and walk and 00:14:51.53\00:14:53.73 take a breath, what kind of things does that do?
