this is when I said that

I went into the
world for a while.

I had been taught so long

that I had to be
perfect to be loved,

not only by my family but by God

that I finally got to
the point that I said,

"God, I can't do it.

I'm not perfect.
Enough is enough."

This is too much work.

about that for a minute

because we talk about addictions
and we talk about change

and we talk about chemical
and non-chemical addictions.

What really trashes us
and nobody really looks at

or very few people
look at pressure addictions,

you know, where I'm
supposed to be perfect

or, you know, I've
got to control everything.
00:01:42.42\00:01:44.02
All of that kind of
stuff and, you know,
00:01:44.05\00:01:46.19
you can put
somebody that was born
00:01:46.22\00:01:47.90
and all of that
pressure next to an addict.

And you behave about the same.

Is there really a
pressure addiction

because maybe that's why

I'm still kind of--
procrastination is something.

So we're gonna work
on that today. Okay.

I schedule myself so closely

that there's
always this pressure

and I really do
excel under pressure.

But it's probably
a pressure addiction.

Well, they say that, you know,
that we literally get to a point

where we operate
out of certain level.

And, you know,
the pace is like this.

And there's
something that happens

in healing from that pressure

that allows us to
surrender and slow down.

And so I would say with
you, Shelley, 'cause I know you

is that you and Jesus are so--

you and God are so
close that you have

surrendered
probably. Oh, absolutely.

Yeah, so-- but the
pressure growing up,

a lot of people deal with that.

They don't look
at as an addiction,

but if you
start lining things up

they almost behaviorally
look like an addict.

Their children tested out
00:02:45.14\00:02:46.98
even psychologically as
the addict's child. Wow.

And so, you know, knowing that
00:02:50.94\00:02:52.70
our behaviors get
a little bit skewed

and we start acting
out in addictive ways.

And that's why
recovery is such a good thing.

It's like how can you take
that to God, all of that stuff.

I am tired.

And what you said is you said
I'm tired and I'm out of here.

Yeah, with God I did.

I mean, but the Lord
is so loving and so kind.

No matter how He
turn you back on Him,

He will chase you down.

I mean His love
will just chase you down.

And when I met
J.D. and we married

and I'm just gonna
jump forward because I know

that we've got
such a short time.

Here I was ill to the point

that life was not
normal at all for 8 months.

And I remember I
went to bed one night

and I thought, hmm, now I
know why you did it, momma.

And, boy, that thought--
00:03:42.99\00:03:44.36
and what I was referring to is
why she tried to commit suicide.
00:03:44.39\00:03:47.15
I wasn't suicidal, but
I'd gotten to that point
00:03:47.18\00:03:51.22
where I had that
emotional identification with
00:03:51.25\00:03:54.17
why my mother had done
that? I can understand.
00:03:54.20\00:03:56.08
And why-- I just want to
00:03:56.11\00:03:58.56
really
encourage anyone out there
00:03:58.59\00:04:00.63
who may be feeling suicidal
00:04:00.66\00:04:03.27
or they know
someone who's suicidal,
00:04:03.30\00:04:05.57
oh, boy don't do it.
00:04:05.60\00:04:07.53
It's that point
of getting hopeless
00:04:07.56\00:04:09.88
and it was just
that hopelessness
00:04:09.91\00:04:11.62
that was overwhelming me.
00:04:11.65\00:04:14.24
And a lot of times
people who plan to jump
00:04:14.27\00:04:17.71
from a bridge or something,
if someone will intervene,
00:04:17.74\00:04:21.27
all it takes is that one
time and that one intervention
00:04:21.30\00:04:23.52
and then they'll
not be suicidal again.
00:04:23.55\00:04:25.40
But, you know, if
somebody talks about suicide
00:04:25.43\00:04:27.82
you definitely want to
get them help. Exactly.
00:04:27.85\00:04:30.09
So I'm not
thinking about suicide,
00:04:30.12\00:04:31.72
but I'm thinking, you know,
I understand why she did it
00:04:31.75\00:04:35.27
because life's not worth living.
00:04:35.30\00:04:36.86
And that's when the Lord--
00:04:36.89\00:04:40.02
I'm not gonna
say it was audible,
00:04:40.05\00:04:41.42
but it's the
closest thing to audible
00:04:41.45\00:04:43.47
that God really spoke to me
that His Word was life to me
00:04:43.50\00:04:47.19
and He set before me
life and death choices.
00:04:47.22\00:04:49.65
Choose life, choose to
believe His Word, His promises.
00:04:49.68\00:04:53.34
And so I got
into the Word of God.
00:04:53.37\00:04:55.37
I began to pray the
Word of God back to Him.
00:04:55.40\00:04:59.22
I was speaking the Word
of God over my life and still
00:04:59.25\00:05:03.37
after 2 weeks nothing
was happening faith-wise.
00:05:03.40\00:05:05.71
And it was like oh, Lord--
you know and I'm struggling.
00:05:05.74\00:05:08.52
You know remember,
I can't read really.
00:05:08.55\00:05:10.86
I mean it's a
struggle. I'm dizzy.
00:05:10.89\00:05:12.26
I'm so dizzy, I can't focus.
00:05:12.29\00:05:14.53
And then one day God
led me to three Scriptures.
00:05:14.56\00:05:17.86
The first
00:05:17.89\00:05:20.23
"That His Word does
not return to Him void,
00:05:20.26\00:05:22.46
but it accomplishes
00:05:22.49\00:05:23.86
every purpose for
which He sent it."
00:05:23.89\00:05:25.66
And then the
other was Jeremiah 1:12
00:05:25.69\00:05:28.22
where God tells
Jeremiah, "You're right,
00:05:28.25\00:05:31.08
I'm watching over
my Word to perform it."
00:05:31.11\00:05:33.71
And then Romans
4:17 where he says
00:05:33.74\00:05:36.06
"that God who
gives life to the dead,
00:05:36.09\00:05:37.87
and He calls
things that do not exist
00:05:37.90\00:05:39.83
as though they already do."
00:05:39.86\00:05:41.96
So see God knows--God knows
the end from the beginning.
00:05:41.99\00:05:45.12
And so here I've got
such an identity crisis,
00:05:45.15\00:05:47.74
but I get into the
Word and all of a sudden
00:05:47.77\00:05:49.70
He's teaching me
who I am in Christ.
00:05:49.73\00:05:52.31
He's teaching me what His
promises are and God healed me.
00:05:52.34\00:05:56.85
It took 4 months,
but God healed me.
00:05:56.88\00:05:59.02
And then He began me on
this journey where His Word,
00:05:59.05\00:06:03.55
I mean I was like Jeremiah.
00:06:03.58\00:06:05.37
I just couldn't, you know--
00:06:05.40\00:06:06.77
your Word was
found and I ate it.
00:06:06.80\00:06:08.41
And it was joy and
rejoicing of my heart.
00:06:08.44\00:06:11.07
And so I'm on this
journey for a few years.
00:06:11.10\00:06:14.02
Then I kind of started
the little backsliding again.
00:06:14.05\00:06:16.25
Then God brings me back
00:06:16.28\00:06:18.05
and He teaches me to press
into His presence in prayer.
00:06:18.08\00:06:20.77
Don't you think it's amazing
00:06:20.80\00:06:22.28
that you could--
that you really can get
00:06:22.31\00:06:24.39
that intimate with God
00:06:24.42\00:06:25.79
and then all the sudden
you think what happened?

Where am I
right now? Absolutely.

And I think a lot of us
end up going on that journey,
00:06:30.17\00:06:32.70
where it's like
where am I right now.
00:06:32.73\00:06:35.08
And I love the fact that
you said He goes after us
00:06:35.11\00:06:37.88
and pulls us back.
He pulled you back.
00:06:37.91\00:06:39.88
He pulled me back
and so He teaches me
00:06:39.91\00:06:42.67
to present to His
presence in prayer
00:06:42.70\00:06:45.30
and that's where He
taught me how to surrender
00:06:45.33\00:06:49.38
and that's when I
knew He was calling me
00:06:49.41\00:06:50.95
to full-time ministry.

Well, talk about--
what does surrender mean?

For somebody that doesn't
know, how do you surrender?
00:06:54.81\00:06:57.15
You know this is
what I always tell people
00:06:57.18\00:06:59.76
when I'm out
talking is that if a man--
00:06:59.79\00:07:02.81
you ask a man
what surrender means.
00:07:02.84\00:07:04.43
And it's like,
oh, boy, you know--
00:07:04.46\00:07:06.27
You give up. It's
give up and the war's over.
00:07:06.30\00:07:08.61
And a woman
usually it's kind of like,
00:07:08.64\00:07:10.26
ooh, somebody is
gonna control me.
00:07:10.29\00:07:12.59
But what God showed
me and it is so powerful.
00:07:12.62\00:07:15.87
As He was teaching me
this He told me "Child,
00:07:15.90\00:07:18.59
when I call you to surrender,
00:07:18.62\00:07:19.99
I'm not asking you just to
do things in your own power.
00:07:20.02\00:07:25.15
It's to rely on Me."
00:07:25.18\00:07:26.55
And He showed me this
little bitty sugar ant.
00:07:26.58\00:07:28.57
Next to the sugar ant
was this huge elephant.
00:07:28.60\00:07:31.20
And He said
"Your limited strength,
00:07:31.23\00:07:34.48
you know, your greatest ability
00:07:34.51\00:07:37.02
could be compared
to this little ant,
00:07:37.05\00:07:38.84
whereas My ability
is like the elephant's
00:07:38.87\00:07:42.55
and I'm asking you
to draw on my power."
00:07:42.58\00:07:44.47
'Cause see God's--
00:07:44.50\00:07:46.34
Offering you all
of this. All of this.
00:07:46.37\00:07:48.85
And what we--He'd
started teaching me about grace
00:07:48.88\00:07:52.13
and the fact that
God's plan is for us
00:07:52.16\00:07:57.22
to be totally
dependent upon Him.
00:07:57.25\00:07:59.76
Here I was trying
to earn my salvation.
00:07:59.79\00:08:01.68
For joy and for strength
and for health and for a life.
00:08:01.71\00:08:05.55
So I think that
when somebody says
00:08:05.58\00:08:07.58
to totally rely on God sometimes
00:08:07.61\00:08:09.57
they even just say and
do what? Do everything.

But here's--I was
praying and asking the Lord,
00:08:13.36\00:08:16.46
how do I walk in surrender?
How do I walk in Jesus' steps?
00:08:16.49\00:08:20.92
And He said you've got to
follow the path of His passion.
00:08:20.95\00:08:23.99
Well, think
about Christ's passion.
00:08:24.02\00:08:25.55
This was, you know,
His crucifixion experience.
00:08:25.58\00:08:31.15
He started in the
Garden of Gethsemane.
00:08:31.18\00:08:33.55
Luke 22:42, "Lord, not
My will but Yours be done."
00:08:33.58\00:08:37.33
So that's what I
pray each morning.
00:08:37.36\00:08:39.76
It's Lord not My will,
but Yours be done today.
00:08:39.79\00:08:42.00
Psalm 143:10,
"Teach me Your will, Lord,
00:08:42.03\00:08:45.85
lead me by Your good Spirit."
00:08:45.88\00:08:47.67
You know, I want to
delight to do Your will, Father.
00:08:47.70\00:08:52.05
But the Bible tells us that
it's God who works in us to will
00:08:52.08\00:08:55.93
and do His good pleasure.
00:08:55.96\00:08:57.85
See and we're
trying-- we're out here trying
00:08:57.88\00:08:59.63
to lead the Christian
life by our own power.
00:08:59.66\00:09:02.65
You got to be kidding.

You know, we're so
easily discouraged,
00:09:04.11\00:09:07.45
dissuaded from
doing the right thing.
00:09:07.48\00:09:09.66
So after that Christ
went from the garden,

the next great
place was the crucifixion.

In Luke 9:23, He says,
00:09:14.80\00:09:17.37
"Pick up your cross
daily and follow Me."
00:09:17.40\00:09:22.03
And so, you know, in Jesus' day
they knew exactly what it meant

when He said pick up the cross.
00:09:25.84\00:09:27.34
You know, we use it like,
00:09:27.37\00:09:28.74
oh, we've all got
our cross to bear.
00:09:28.77\00:09:30.64
Bless their hearts.

But not--that's a bad
illustration of that Scripture

because in Luke
9:23 when Jesus said

"if anyone would follow
Me pick up his cross daily,"

they knew that to
pick up your cross meant
00:09:42.48\00:09:44.29
you're gonna be crucified.
00:09:44.32\00:09:45.95
So, you know, Paul writes
so much about it in Galatians,
00:09:45.98\00:09:49.11
you know, that I've
been crucified to the world
00:09:49.14\00:09:50.98
and the world to me and my boast
00:09:51.01\00:09:53.02
is in the cross of Christ.
00:09:53.05\00:09:54.96
And he says that it's
Jesus who's living in him now.
00:09:54.99\00:09:58.14
And Paul said I die daily.
00:09:58.17\00:09:59.57
So it's that
matter of choosing daily
00:09:59.60\00:10:02.14
whom you're gonna serve.
00:10:02.17\00:10:03.63
It's not the choice
between Satan and Jesus.
00:10:03.66\00:10:07.69
It's a choice
between self and Jesus.
00:10:07.72\00:10:11.17
So every day we've
got to get up and say,

"Lord, I'm
ready to die to self."

But Romans 8:13 says

"that it is by the
power of the Holy Spirit

that we put to death
the misdeeds of our flesh."

It takes the two
working in tandem.

I can't put the
misdeeds of my flesh to death

without the Holy Spirit. Right.

And the Holy
Spirit can't do it for me

if I'm not gonna cooperate.

So it's this idea
of surrendering control

and saying, "Okay,

But you know what,
I still wanna go back

to this little girl.

Well, wait, I
got-- before you do that,

'cause the most
important step in surrender

is Jesus didn't
stay on the cross.

He was buried and He came
up on resurrection morning.

And our most
important point in surrender

is every day
before we leave the house
00:10:55.15\00:10:57.84
and sometimes it
takes more than once a day,

but like Bryan every
day you've got to say

"Lord, fill me afresh
with your Holy Spirit.

Jesus said in Luke 11:9
"Ask and keep on asking,

seek and keep on seeking,
knock and keep on knocking."

And then He says in verse 13

"How much more
will the heavenly Father
00:11:14.44\00:11:17.50
give the Holy
Spirit to those who ask

and seek and keep on asking."

So it's this whole idea

that if we're trying
to do it in our own power.

Paul said to in Galatians,

he said "You
foolish, Galatians."

Galatians 3:3, he said
"Having begun in the spirit

are you now trying to
perfect your walk in the flesh?"

Yes, I had been
trying. And I am tired again.

But He taught me to surrender

and then He started teaching
me about His grace. Amen.

And the Lord just
changed my life so much. Amen.

So your healing
happened, it changed your life

and you start
using the Word of God

you lived under this pressure
for years and years and years.

And there is a
part of the promise

it's from Christ that
says "Yoke up with me."

Literally yoke up with me.
00:12:14.56\00:12:15.99
I want to take that
pressure off of you.I

'Cause it's huge. It is.

And to me that even though

God took you into
the carrying the cross

and dying to self and
all of that kind of stuff

is I think sometimes
we think dying to self

as if somehow I'm
gonna put myself over here

and He says you
don't even know yourself.

You've been damaged
and living under pressure,

living in dysfunction.
I'm gonna yoke up with you.

You are gonna
walk in this direction,

but you when you fully see me
00:12:42.52\00:12:44.76
you'll fully see
yourself right behind me.

And can I say something? Yeah.
I just want to say one thing.

What God taught me about grace,

'cause I had gone
from being so legalistic

and had this devil's
snare around my foot on that,

that then I went to the point
of being a little too liberal

and thinking that grace was just
loosey-goosey- do- what-you-want

type of thing.

But when God called
me to full-time ministry,

He told me to
forget what I think I know

and come sit at His
feet and He would teach me.

I could just hear Him so sweetly
say that, you know. Yeah.

The amazing
thing was that a lot--

and I had been in
part-time ministry
00:13:19.11\00:13:21.26
for 14 years at that
time. And I thought I knew God.
00:13:21.29\00:13:23.90
I thought I knew the Bible.
00:13:23.93\00:13:25.30
And He really took
me through deep studies.
00:13:25.33\00:13:27.74
And I guess the one
thing that I want to make sure
00:13:27.77\00:13:30.15
I say is that as He took
me through these deep studies,
00:13:30.18\00:13:34.22
He began opening
my eyes to His love.
00:13:34.25\00:13:37.36
And divine love has no
equal. I can't explain it.

But I started seeing

that God teaches
that He in His grace,

He is going to
sanctify us by His grace.

And the first day that
I really understood that

and it was a day
of worship for me
