Welcome to Celebrating Life in Recovery, 00:00:10.77\00:00:12.18 I'm Cheri your host. 00:00:12.21\00:00:13.48 Today we're going to look at methamphetamine. 00:00:13.51\00:00:15.25 Not an easy subject, and especially for this woman, 00:00:15.28\00:00:18.43 so stay with us, join us in the café. 00:00:18.46\00:00:20.93 What is interesting to me is that God can step in and 00:00:48.25\00:00:51.83 heal us from anything. 00:00:51.86\00:00:53.18 I really believe when I came into recovery that I had two 00:00:53.21\00:00:56.82 brain cells left, and I'm not even sure that those were 00:00:56.85\00:01:00.21 communicating with each other. 00:01:00.24\00:01:02.12 God has restored so much, when they told me years later, 00:01:02.15\00:01:06.77 10 years later, that I had hepatitis A, B. and C. 00:01:06.80\00:01:09.11 I started praying about that and now they test me 00:01:09.14\00:01:12.35 and I don't have it. 00:01:12.38\00:01:13.70 I was tested for four years with it, so God is really 00:01:13.73\00:01:16.43 able to step in and do absolutely above what we can 00:01:16.46\00:01:21.24 even hope for or pray for, or even dream about. 00:01:21.27\00:01:25.33 Except to the point where we take ourselves out, as long 00:01:25.36\00:01:29.73 as we are breathing, God intervenes. 00:01:29.76\00:01:32.02 That's what happens when we take ourselves out. 00:01:32.05\00:01:36.34 We are going to talk to Dr. Mary Holley. 00:01:36.37\00:01:38.46 Dr. Holley I am so glad that you are on the show. 00:01:38.49\00:01:41.38 I have seen some of your presentations, I have seen the 00:01:41.41\00:01:46.13 work that you have done, and I sit there and 00:01:46.16\00:01:48.55 just want to Yahoo. 00:01:48.58\00:01:51.12 You really go out and educate folks. - yes, yes! 00:01:51.15\00:01:55.37 Tell us a little bit about that part, and then we will 00:01:55.40\00:01:59.92 get into why you got into this. 00:01:59.95\00:02:01.59 The training I do is mostly in county jail settings, talking to 00:02:01.62\00:02:05.36 inmates and addicts in local rehabilitation centers and 00:02:05.39\00:02:08.52 jails, that is where my love is, 00:02:08.55\00:02:10.58 that is where I come to life. 00:02:10.61\00:02:12.73 You just look too sweet to do that. 00:02:12.76\00:02:14.43 Do they listen? 00:02:14.46\00:02:16.71 Because you come in there looking so normal. 00:02:16.74\00:02:18.57 I come in looking like a respected physician and 00:02:18.60\00:02:21.69 I started at my local community where half the women in that 00:02:21.72\00:02:25.11 county jail have been my patients. 00:02:25.14\00:02:27.11 I delivered babies for them, they trusted me. 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.10 They would talk to me, and I learned as much from them 00:02:29.13\00:02:33.18 as they learned from me. 00:02:33.21\00:02:34.74 I learned what it is like to live as an addict. 00:02:34.77\00:02:38.07 I taught them all about chemistry, and they understood 00:02:38.10\00:02:40.33 that that's the truth because they lived it. 00:02:40.36\00:02:42.55 But they shared with me what it feels like from the inside. 00:02:42.58\00:02:45.10 That is where I get my power is from what I learned from 00:02:45.13\00:02:48.78 those inmates. - That's amazing. 00:02:48.81\00:02:50.62 So now let's go back to early in life and what started you 00:02:50.65\00:02:56.06 being interested in this kind of population? 00:02:56.09\00:02:59.02 My brother was addicted to methamphetamine. 00:02:59.05\00:03:01.67 He got addicted when he was 22 years old and it killed him 00:03:01.70\00:03:05.75 when he was 24 years old. 00:03:05.78\00:03:07.39 He was adorable, smart, funny. 00:03:07.42\00:03:10.58 He was an adorable kid, oh yeah. 00:03:10.61\00:03:12.74 He had a lot of friends, he was always active, rode 00:03:12.77\00:03:16.51 a motorcycle, played music and just a good kid. 00:03:16.54\00:03:19.75 A friend took him out for his 21st birthday, we are going 00:03:19.78\00:03:23.93 to show you a good time and introduced him to drugs in 00:03:23.96\00:03:26.87 general and then to methamphetamine a little later. 00:03:26.90\00:03:29.71 By the time he was 22 years old he was addicted. 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.59 What did his addiction look like? 00:03:32.62\00:03:35.65 And with your family, you are a Christian family, normal? 00:03:35.68\00:03:40.43 We were broken family, my father left when Jim was four. 00:03:40.46\00:03:45.90 Mother had tried to support Jim on her own with minimum- 00:03:45.93\00:03:51.09 wage jobs and there was never enough money. 00:03:51.12\00:03:52.96 He was alone a good bit of the time growing up. 00:03:52.99\00:03:55.61 He came home to an empty house when he was six years old, 00:03:55.64\00:03:58.73 and would make himself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. 00:03:58.76\00:04:00.95 So he was kind of set up to get hooked on drugs because 00:04:00.98\00:04:06.50 he was unsupervised and totally alone. 00:04:06.53\00:04:09.31 Anyone who offered him friendship, he was right there 00:04:09.34\00:04:12.32 to be friends with them and if they offered him drugs too, 00:04:12.35\00:04:14.43 well that was okay too. 00:04:14.46\00:04:15.89 - Were you already out of the house? 00:04:15.92\00:04:17.65 I was already out of the house, yeah I was 16 years older. 00:04:17.68\00:04:19.69 So what did his addiction look like as he started to use 00:04:21.80\00:04:25.11 and started to get lost in that? 00:04:25.14\00:04:26.94 He got pulled over for drunk driving, minor possession 00:04:26.97\00:04:31.55 charges, minimal arrest. 00:04:31.58\00:04:34.34 My mother would always bail him out, she didn't want 00:04:34.37\00:04:36.86 her son to staying in jail. 00:04:36.89\00:04:38.49 That's really what cooked him, because had he been 00:04:38.52\00:04:42.51 allowed to stay in jail for a little bit longer, he might 00:04:42.54\00:04:44.61 have come to his senses and realized what he was doing 00:04:44.64\00:04:46.97 and where it was leading him. 00:04:47.00\00:04:48.81 So she wouldn't let him suffer, she wouldn't let him 00:04:48.84\00:04:51.26 suffer long enough to want to turn around. 00:04:51.29\00:04:54.08 I think part of that was her guilt of not having 00:04:54.11\00:04:56.35 - of course it was, of course it was. 00:04:56.38\00:04:59.08 She felt guilty that she allow this to happen in the first 00:04:59.11\00:05:01.54 place, the first time she detected a drug abuse problem 00:05:01.57\00:05:05.31 was very shortly after I left home. 00:05:05.34\00:05:07.63 He was about 14 and she found inhalants under the bed 00:05:07.66\00:05:11.77 were he began getting into the beer and so she put him 00:05:11.80\00:05:15.41 in a 21 day program but that wasn't nearly enough. 00:05:15.44\00:05:19.17 - so people who don't know, can you explain inhalants? 00:05:19.20\00:05:22.96 I know that is basic stuff, but a lot of people are going 00:05:22.99\00:05:26.06 to hear that and say what she talking about? 00:05:26.09\00:05:28.04 Inhalants are like spray paint or glue, they'll spray 00:05:28.07\00:05:32.60 into a bag and put the bag up to their face, it's called 00:05:32.63\00:05:35.12 huffing, they get real high concentrations of these drugs 00:05:35.15\00:05:38.33 that displace the oxygen in the blood and so they get 00:05:38.36\00:05:41.47 hypoxic high, it is very similar to what kids are 00:05:41.50\00:05:45.12 doing now where they had this choking game. 00:05:45.15\00:05:47.22 They put a rope around their necks and close the door 00:05:47.25\00:05:50.01 and pull the rope to lower their oxygen levels, 00:05:50.04\00:05:55.89 and they hallucinate and they think it's fun. 00:05:55.92\00:05:57.91 Only some of them die, and people can die 00:05:57.94\00:06:00.54 from huffing as well. 00:06:00.57\00:06:02.15 We're going to get into, probably not this show but the 00:06:02.18\00:06:05.09 next show, what parents can look at. 00:06:05.12\00:06:06.84 Once you know about them, you can see those signs almost 00:06:06.87\00:06:10.97 everywhere, and your mom found something that she said oh 00:06:11.00\00:06:13.09 he is involved and let's get him into treatment. 00:06:13.12\00:06:16.16 Did your brother ever talk about what treatment was like 00:06:16.19\00:06:18.59 and did it help him? 00:06:18.62\00:06:19.95 He hated every minute of it, he played the game, made the 00:06:19.98\00:06:23.26 right answers to the right questions and got out of there. 00:06:23.29\00:06:25.95 Then immediately, by that same evening, 00:06:25.98\00:06:28.43 he was using again. 00:06:28.46\00:06:29.87 He freely admitted that. 00:06:29.90\00:06:31.49 - right, so his addiction continued? - yes! 00:06:31.52\00:06:35.82 When you say continued, drinking, smoking weed, partying 00:06:35.85\00:06:41.02 with friends, did his grades change? 00:06:41.05\00:06:43.02 He almost flunked the eighth grade and went into high school 00:06:43.05\00:06:47.31 and finished maybe a year and a half, when he 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.66 turned 16 he dropped out. 00:06:49.69\00:06:51.10 - he dropped out at 16! 00:06:51.13\00:06:52.95 So we had all this free time? - yes! 00:06:52.98\00:06:55.68 As soon as you said that I thought oh man, all this free 00:06:55.71\00:06:58.19 time, and then getting into meth. 00:06:58.22\00:07:00.04 Was meth different than the earlier drugs? 00:07:02.87\00:07:04.82 Methamphetamine is a lot more powerful than the cocaine 00:07:04.85\00:07:07.78 he had used before. 00:07:07.81\00:07:09.02 He said I could use cocaine and walk away from it. 00:07:09.05\00:07:10.88 He didn't get addicted to that, but methamphetamine 00:07:10.91\00:07:13.80 was a different animal, and he was addicted 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.28 right from the start. 00:07:16.31\00:07:17.44 He says that even on a videotape, I will never get back 00:07:17.47\00:07:21.57 what I lost that night. 00:07:21.60\00:07:23.26 People will say that you can't get addicted on the first 00:07:23.29\00:07:27.15 one, I hear that all the time. 00:07:27.18\00:07:28.77 But from an addict, I'm an addict, don't lie to yourself. 00:07:28.80\00:07:32.84 Some of these drugs, if you are prone to addiction in 00:07:32.87\00:07:36.35 any way because of childhood stuff and all that, 00:07:36.38\00:07:40.20 you can get addicted the first time. 00:07:40.23\00:07:42.66 Even biochemically speaking, the very first hit of 00:07:42.69\00:07:45.73 methamphetamine damages the track in the brain that gives 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.85 you self control, and it doesn't take but one or two hits 00:07:48.88\00:07:52.08 to destroy that tissue. 00:07:52.11\00:07:53.96 Methamphetamine is far more toxic to it than alcohol. 00:07:53.99\00:07:56.28 You know what, I can't even pronounce that track, 00:07:56.31\00:07:59.77 but I was fascinated when I read, you've written a number 00:07:59.80\00:08:03.18 of books, in one of your books you talk about that part 00:08:03.21\00:08:06.46 of the brain, can you talk about that? 00:08:06.49\00:08:08.85 What does it mean and how does it get damaged? 00:08:08.88\00:08:11.20 It's actually a series of tracks, I only name the biggest 00:08:11.23\00:08:15.41 one fasciculus retroflex' 00:08:15.44\00:08:17.09 So you see why I can't say that? 00:08:17.12\00:08:20.10 Say it in, say it slowly. 00:08:20.13\00:08:21.95 It's called fasciculus retroflex's, it's the little 00:08:21.98\00:08:26.51 thing that gives you your conscious mind where you make 00:08:26.54\00:08:29.20 decisions and have rational thought and gives the control 00:08:29.23\00:08:32.44 over the urges and drives and cravings that come 00:08:32.47\00:08:35.55 out of the bottom of the brain. 00:08:35.58\00:08:37.29 So it literally connects those two areas, frontal lobe 00:08:37.32\00:08:41.07 and your base animal instincts and the little 00:08:41.10\00:08:45.59 character stuff in there. 00:08:45.62\00:08:47.39 It has a stop off in the character development areas 00:08:47.42\00:08:50.82 called lateral hibernal and continues 00:08:50.85\00:08:53.99 down to craving areas. 00:08:54.02\00:08:56.12 So you can control those things, if you have a desire for 00:08:56.15\00:08:59.00 chocolate chip cookies and you know you're not supposed 00:08:59.03\00:09:00.97 to eat things like that, you control it. 00:09:01.00\00:09:02.25 The electrical current that goes up to the frontal lobe says, 00:09:02.28\00:09:06.06 you know you're trying to get in shape and 00:09:06.09\00:09:08.27 then it goes back down. 00:09:08.30\00:09:09.86 So you can reason with yourself and think things out, 00:09:09.89\00:09:12.03 but when those tissue tracks get destroyed, you don't 00:09:12.06\00:09:15.78 think about it, you just do it. 00:09:15.81\00:09:17.44 You get a desire to get high and you're off to the drug 00:09:17.47\00:09:20.99 dealer and it doesn't even cross your mind 00:09:21.02\00:09:24.06 to control that urge, and you are no longer physically able 00:09:24.09\00:09:28.26 to control that urge. 00:09:28.29\00:09:30.00 You're suppose to go to work. 00:09:30.03\00:09:31.36 It affects every area of self-discipline, not just drug 00:09:31.39\00:09:35.10 use, if you don't want to go to work tomorrow, or you 00:09:35.13\00:09:38.23 don't want to pay the bills, yell at your kids because 00:09:38.26\00:09:41.24 they are making too much noise. 00:09:41.27\00:09:42.31 You can control your temper, can't control ambition, 00:09:42.34\00:09:44.89 you can't control any part of your life, 00:09:44.92\00:09:46.31 not just the drug use. 00:09:46.34\00:09:48.28 What's interesting to me is the more that I looked at 00:09:48.31\00:09:50.40 some of the stuff you put together, is the fact that not 00:09:50.43\00:09:53.15 only can you not control it but you can literally see that 00:09:53.18\00:09:55.57 there is an electrical current that is not going anymore. 00:09:55.60\00:09:59.14 So I thought, no way, that you could look at my brain 00:09:59.17\00:10:03.21 and say that you damaged that part. 00:10:03.24\00:10:05.04 I think that we just don't know that our choices, 00:10:05.07\00:10:10.38 smoking cigarettes even, those are addictions that damage 00:10:10.41\00:10:15.31 - That same track, that same track, fasciculus retroflex's 00:10:15.34\00:10:20.29 it has two tracks to it. 00:10:20.32\00:10:21.67 One of them is sensitive to nicotine, cigarette smoking. 00:10:21.70\00:10:24.24 The other is sensitive to all the other drugs, from 00:10:24.27\00:10:27.18 Alcohol up to methamphetamine. 00:10:27.21\00:10:29.33 So when you start smoking you lose the right lane of 00:10:29.36\00:10:32.59 your self-control track and that predisposes you to 00:10:32.62\00:10:35.63 become addicted to the next thing that comes along and 00:10:35.66\00:10:37.83 knocks out the left lane. 00:10:37.86\00:10:39.51 So you're more likely to get addicted, more likely to 00:10:39.54\00:10:42.22 remain addicted if you continue smoking. 00:10:42.25\00:10:44.56 Smoking doesn't actually kill those cells, it just 00:10:44.59\00:10:46.98 disables them and they don't work quite right. 00:10:47.01\00:10:48.90 It's like road bumps, speed bumps. 00:10:48.93\00:10:50.78 If you quit smoking you regain the right line of that 00:10:50.81\00:10:55.80 control track and you are a lot more able to stay clean 00:10:55.83\00:10:59.31 long term if you quit smoking. 00:10:59.34\00:11:01.17 Up to four times more likely to stay clean 00:11:01.20\00:11:03.34 if you stop smoking. 00:11:03.37\00:11:05.19 Is anybody hearing that? I think we have to hear that. 00:11:05.22\00:11:08.49 A lot of times people will say, I'm going to stop this 00:11:08.52\00:11:10.70 drug but not this drug, or I'm going to still drink 00:11:10.73\00:11:13.86 coffee and smoke but I'm not going to slam heroin. 00:11:13.89\00:11:16.56 But what you are saying is, what studies are showing in 00:11:16.59\00:11:19.79 the brain is to really get away from everything and give 00:11:19.82\00:11:23.55 yourself have a chance, or more than half a chance. 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.24 You restore yourself control over your drug intake, 00:11:26.27\00:11:29.19 or your temper, over your ambition, every area of life 00:11:29.22\00:11:33.80 becomes more manageable when you also quit smoking. 00:11:33.83\00:11:36.96 You get that natural spontaneous easy way of controlling 00:11:36.99\00:11:40.94 yourself back, you don't have to think about it, 00:11:40.97\00:11:43.15 it comes spontaneously. 00:11:43.18\00:11:44.79 One of the things about porn addictions is that, is that one 00:11:44.82\00:11:46.67 that damages that area? 00:11:46.70\00:11:48.59 Pornography stimulates a similar area of the brain that 00:11:48.62\00:11:51.52 can trigger the same biochemical cascade 00:11:51.55\00:11:54.75 that methamphetamine does. 00:11:54.78\00:11:56.67 People get hooked on that. - right! 00:11:56.70\00:11:59.01 I want to get back to that, definitely in another show 00:12:01.62\00:12:03.88 we will cover all this stuff in depth because I think the 00:12:03.91\00:12:06.89 more we know about our brain, when somebody says, just 00:12:06.92\00:12:11.23 stop using, and God talks about taking care of yourself. 00:12:11.26\00:12:16.55 Really take care of yourself, because once we damage 00:12:16.58\00:12:20.42 things, especially in our brain, our life is compromised. 00:12:20.45\00:12:25.38 We are not living up to our full potential at all. 00:12:25.41\00:12:27.77 Not just personally, but also within the family. 00:12:27.80\00:12:30.57 You are not being the dad you're supposed to be. 00:12:30.60\00:12:32.55 You are not being the daughter your supposed to be. 00:12:32.58\00:12:34.19 It affects every area of society, you're not the employee 00:12:34.22\00:12:37.53 you are supposed to be. 00:12:37.56\00:12:38.80 You are not the driver we intended you to be. 00:12:38.83\00:12:41.14 - you're not the brother. - right! 00:12:41.17\00:12:44.95 It is more than just your individual life, this affects 00:12:44.98\00:12:48.97 everybody around you, and a lot further than you can see. 00:12:49.00\00:12:52.07 I remember when I was hearing some of your story, 00:12:52.10\00:12:57.02 you talked, about your brother and your daughter and how 00:12:57.05\00:12:59.92 afraid she was of him toward the end. 00:12:59.95\00:13:01.95 Can you talk about why, and what change in his behavior 00:13:01.98\00:13:04.98 that will cause her to be afraid? 00:13:05.01\00:13:06.65 He would fly off the handle over nothing, just minimal 00:13:06.68\00:13:09.83 things would make him angry. 00:13:09.86\00:13:11.52 So she would walk into the room and want to be near him, 00:13:11.55\00:13:14.31 but she would stay where the door was real close. 00:13:14.34\00:13:17.42 Where she could get away real quick. 00:13:17.45\00:13:19.75 She would lean into him because she loved him, but she 00:13:19.78\00:13:22.78 always had her eye on the door. 00:13:22.81\00:13:24.45 You know to this day she is still that way. 00:13:24.48\00:13:25.93 She is 14 years old now and I took her to the doctor, 00:13:25.96\00:13:28.46 she was going to get shots for a trip to go to Ecuador. 00:13:28.49\00:13:31.90 She was supposed to get some injections and 00:13:31.93\00:13:33.79 she's looking at the door. 00:13:33.82\00:13:35.05 She was making sure where the escape route was. 00:13:35.08\00:13:36.63 So it really changed her. 00:13:36.66\00:13:38.95 Did your brother end up with psychosis, 00:13:38.98\00:13:42.87 with the methamphetamine? 00:13:42.90\00:13:44.28 Yes he became psychotic, he thought the police could 00:13:44.31\00:13:46.78 see through the walls, they were beaming thoughts into 00:13:46.81\00:13:49.17 his head from a satellite, they could see through 00:13:49.20\00:13:51.81 the walls and read his mind. 00:13:51.84\00:13:53.46 We put him into a mental hospital and one occasion when 00:13:53.49\00:13:57.17 he attempted suicide, but he only stayed for the 72 hour 00:13:57.20\00:14:00.44 emergency commitment and after that he signed out of there 00:14:00.47\00:14:03.39 because he thought the drug dealers could 00:14:03.42\00:14:05.87 see through the walls. 00:14:05.90\00:14:07.79 Within three weeks he killed himself. 00:14:07.82\00:14:10.92 They say a drug-induced psychosis is as bad 00:14:12.44\00:14:14.44 as any other psychosis. 00:14:14.47\00:14:15.85 Biochemically it is indistin- guishable, and clinically 00:14:15.88\00:14:18.76 talking to people that are psychotic because of drugs, the 00:14:18.79\00:14:21.70 only way you can tell them apart is that the drug addict 00:14:21.73\00:14:24.11 hallucinates about drug context. 00:14:24.14\00:14:27.35 He hallucinates about dealers and narks and guns and cops. 00:14:27.38\00:14:31.58 Where the general schizophrenic will have more generalized 00:14:31.61\00:14:35.16 hallucinations that don't necessarily refer to drugs, 00:14:35.19\00:14:38.08 though they can, but the drug induced psychotic all 00:14:38.11\00:14:41.47 he can think about is his single-minded and compulsiveness 00:14:41.50\00:14:44.69 about his drugs. 00:14:44.72\00:14:46.07 When he killed himself, he struggled, he felt like 00:14:46.10\00:14:49.81 something was telling him to kill himself all the time. 00:14:49.84\00:14:53.27 He said, the way he put it was he felt abandoned. 00:14:53.30\00:14:56.15 He felt alone like no one understood and nobody cared. 00:14:56.18\00:15:00.17 That is the way he felt. 00:15:00.20\00:15:02.30 He was a Christian and believed in God, in fact the 00:15:02.33\00:15:05.40 Sunday before he killed himself on Monday, he wanted 00:15:05.43\00:15:08.43 to go to church and he stayed through one service and 00:15:08.46\00:15:11.31 there was another service afterword and he stayed 00:15:11.34\00:15:13.37 for the second sermon. 00:15:13.40\00:15:14.87 He was hungry for more of God because he knew what 00:15:14.90\00:15:18.36 he was facing, but he just couldn't live like that. 00:15:18.39\00:15:21.22 He thought he would always be crazy. 00:15:21.25\00:15:23.60 I'm not doing it! 00:15:23.63\00:15:25.70 So he ends up killing himself. - Yes! 00:15:25.73\00:15:27.59 That really changed your life, even your medical practice 00:15:27.62\00:15:31.92 it sounds like. - Yes I was an obstetrician. 00:15:31.95\00:15:34.99 I delivered babies for about 20 years. 00:15:35.02\00:15:37.31 I closed my practice about three years ago to devote 00:15:37.34\00:15:40.26 full-time to methamphetamine, 00:15:40.29\00:15:42.31 because it is so much more important. 00:15:42.34\00:15:44.12 What was it, when you decided to start looking into this, 00:15:44.15\00:15:48.79 at first it was just to find out what happened with 00:15:48.82\00:15:50.93 my brother, what kind of drug is this that took 00:15:50.96\00:15:54.82 him completely away from us, away from himself? 00:15:54.85\00:15:57.76 What is this that it destroyed his life, 00:15:57.79\00:16:00.84 that was my first question, but also I was in practice 00:16:00.87\00:16:03.47 and was delivering babies. 00:16:03.50\00:16:04.78 I started seeing patients coming into my office, nine 00:16:04.81\00:16:08.39 months pregnant, and acting just as crazy as Jim was. 00:16:08.42\00:16:10.76 I was doing drug tests on these ladies and they were 00:16:10.79\00:16:13.59 positive for methamphetamine, it was throughout the 00:16:13.62\00:16:15.74 community, and then I looked into it, not just as a sister, 00:16:15.77\00:16:19.53 but as a physician, where's the biochemistry? 00:16:19.56\00:16:22.20 Give me an explanation. What is this stuff doing? 00:16:22.23\00:16:24.41 What I found out appalls me. 00:16:24.44\00:16:27.32 Teach us some stuff. 00:16:27.35\00:16:29.68 Methamphetamine gives a whopping dose of the brains 00:16:29.71\00:16:34.38 favorite pleasure chemicals called dopamine's, 00:16:34.41\00:16:37.50 that's the long name for it. 00:16:37.53\00:16:38.95 It is a thing that makes everything feel good. 00:16:38.98\00:16:40.73 It makes the music sound good, food tastes good. 00:16:40.76\00:16:44.03 - you are beautiful! 00:16:44.06\00:16:45.79 Everything feels good because of dopamine in a special 00:16:45.82\00:16:49.40 little section called nucleus accumbens. 00:16:49.43\00:16:51.96 It's a pleasure center, it is meant to operate on natural 00:16:51.99\00:16:55.82 pleasures, beautiful music, or a pretty flower, will 00:16:55.85\00:17:01.12 stimulate those centers. 00:17:01.15\00:17:02.78 Loving your children, sitting down to a nice meal is all 00:17:02.81\00:17:06.16 that is supposed to be necessary to stimulate those 00:17:06.19\00:17:08.31 centers, but when you overdose them, and overpower them 00:17:08.34\00:17:12.16 with too much of abusive drugs, 00:17:12.19\00:17:14.70 they are not responding to those things anymore. 00:17:14.73\00:17:16.61 As though hugging your children doesn't give you a lift. 00:17:16.64\00:17:20.26 Talking to a friend doesn't make you feel better. 00:17:20.29\00:17:22.81 The things that are supposed to be gratifying and 00:17:22.84\00:17:26.26 reinforcing don't work anymore, 00:17:26.29\00:17:28.85 once you have been on methamphetamines. 00:17:28.88\00:17:30.91 As I came off of drugs, what was interesting was that I 00:17:30.94\00:17:37.45 had to learn again begin to feel good about those simple things. 00:17:37.48\00:17:40.77 I mean my brain chemistry was so messed up, but I wanted 00:17:40.80\00:17:44.14 to tell every child on the planet do not even destroy 00:17:44.17\00:17:48.46 yourself in this way, it really is horrible. 00:17:48.49\00:17:51.05 As you use it is horrible, absolutely horrible. 00:17:51.08\00:17:56.01 Family members do not understand that either. 00:17:56.04\00:17:58.00 They say, well why don't you just quit this stuff? 00:17:58.03\00:18:00.88 Why don't you just stop it, okay? 00:18:00.91\00:18:02.96 It's not that easy, it hurts so bad to get off this stuff. 00:18:02.99\00:18:07.72 Nobody is going to do it until it hurts worse to keep using. 00:18:07.75\00:18:11.60 And it hurts worse to keep using in the county jail, 00:18:11.63\00:18:14.57 where nobody will bail you out. 00:18:14.60\00:18:16.19 But they don't understand that. 00:18:16.22\00:18:17.51 Like your mom, don't bail them out. 00:18:17.54\00:18:20.46 Don't bail them out and let God do His job. 00:18:20.49\00:18:23.61 - let your body have a chance to heal. 00:18:23.64\00:18:25.79 God put that kid in prison for a very good reason, 00:18:25.82\00:18:28.50 don't sabotage it, let him stay there long enough to heal. 00:18:28.53\00:18:32.70 My heart says, I bet somebody heard you say that right now. 00:18:32.73\00:18:36.24 I hope so! - Amen! 00:18:36.27\00:18:38.57 Tell me if this isn't, somebody told me as I was coming in 00:18:41.51\00:18:43.75 to do recovery at first, is that when I take the drug, 00:18:43.78\00:18:48.31 when I take the meth or stimulant or whatever, it is as 00:18:48.34\00:18:52.28 if a neural chemistry gets turned on like a faucet 00:18:52.31\00:18:55.26 being turned on full blast and my body is saying, oh man 00:18:55.29\00:18:59.68 this is amazing, but nothing else in a normal existence 00:18:59.71\00:19:05.15 can turn it on full blast. 00:19:05.18\00:19:06.93 So everything else is secondary now. 00:19:06.96\00:19:09.07 Nothing will ever shine the candle the way meth does. 00:19:09.10\00:19:12.22 It's like a pressure washer of pleasure chemical. 00:19:12.25\00:19:16.44 There is no natural stimulus that can do that. 00:19:16.47\00:19:19.31 Once you have turned off that pressure washer, it's like 00:19:19.34\00:19:25.44 the world is so gray and ugly and boring and stupid. 00:19:25.47\00:19:29.51 No conversation is interesting anymore. 00:19:29.54\00:19:33.36 No televisions show is worth watching anymore. 00:19:33.39\00:19:36.56 For at least six months after getting off the meth, 00:19:36.59\00:19:40.67 the whole world is like oatmeal. 00:19:40.70\00:19:43.44 Nothing tastes good, nothing sounds good, nothing looks 00:19:43.47\00:19:46.97 good, this job is boring, these people are stupid. 00:19:47.00\00:19:49.82 If I could just feel good again, just once, just for 00:19:49.85\00:19:53.29 a little while, if I could just feel good again for 00:19:53.32\00:19:55.05 a little while so they get high again. 00:19:55.08\00:19:56.85 And everybody's going, what is the matter with you? 00:19:56.88\00:19:58.88 My sister, my sister is a meth addict and she has been 00:20:01.95\00:20:04.57 since she was 15 and now is in her 40s. 00:20:04.60\00:20:06.86 I have said everything, everything. 00:20:06.89\00:20:10.96 I remember going over one time and she was 70 pounds, 00:20:10.99\00:20:15.25 maybe 78 pounds, her teeth were all rotted out and she 00:20:15.28\00:20:19.71 had meth sores all over. 00:20:19.74\00:20:21.20 I started crying, and I put her in front of a mirror and 00:20:21.23\00:20:23.86 I said Joni, you are scaring me. 00:20:23.89\00:20:26.73 She said, what are you jealous that she was so thin? 00:20:26.76\00:20:31.35 I thought, the chemicals have so flooded the brain that she 00:20:31.38\00:20:35.01 can't they even look in the mirror and see reality 00:20:35.04\00:20:37.41 the same way, and it's almost to me, I was surprised, 00:20:37.44\00:20:40.50 it's almost like talking to a schizophrenic because their 00:20:40.53\00:20:43.14 reality is so different than yours. 00:20:43.17\00:20:46.06 Can you talk a little bit about that? 00:20:46.10\00:20:47.78 Somebody will say, why don't you just understand 00:20:47.81\00:20:49.64 what I am saying? 00:20:49.67\00:20:51.04 The schizophrenia and the hallucinations that are 00:20:51.07\00:20:54.93 associated with methamphetamine are pervasive, they are through 00:20:54.96\00:20:58.10 the whole personality, 00:20:58.13\00:20:59.47 not just in any one particular situation. 00:20:59.51\00:21:01.58 So they have this altered sense of reality, and that 00:21:01.61\00:21:04.76 reality to them is just as real as the table right here. 00:21:04.80\00:21:07.91 Nobody can talk them out of it. 00:21:07.94\00:21:10.30 What they see in their minds is just as real 00:21:10.33\00:21:13.11 as any physical reality. 00:21:13.15\00:21:15.51 It actually starts as a form of sleep depravation. 00:21:15.54\00:21:19.23 If you go for long enough without any sleep you will 00:21:19.27\00:21:22.79 hallucinate, it happens to me as an obstetrician after 00:21:22.83\00:21:26.31 about four days without any sleep. 00:21:26.35\00:21:28.95 A meth addict can do four days, two weeks. 00:21:28.98\00:21:30.38 Oh, no problem for them to stay at two weeks at a time, 00:21:30.42\00:21:33.77 by the end of the week of no sleep they are seeing things. 00:21:33.80\00:21:37.79 They see shadow people, they are right outside their field 00:21:37.83\00:21:41.21 of vision and he has got a chain in a gun and he is going 00:21:41.25\00:21:43.97 to kill me, but every time I turn around he disappears. 00:21:44.00\00:21:46.69 Those unreality types of feelings and situations. 00:21:46.73\00:21:53.57 They are suspicious, are worried about someone following them. 00:21:53.61\00:21:58.24 They think every time you pick up the phone you are 00:21:58.28\00:22:00.86 reporting them to the police. 00:22:00.90\00:22:02.21 Kind of delusional ideas that are pervasive. 00:22:02.25\00:22:05.59 For somebody that does not know this world, they probably 00:22:05.62\00:22:08.73 listen to you and think that you are exaggerating a little 00:22:08.77\00:22:11.84 bit, but I want to say you're not exaggerating. 00:22:11.87\00:22:15.00 I'm minimizing it, it gets much worse than that. 00:22:15.04\00:22:18.09 I had a friend that thought that the FBI was after them. 00:22:18.13\00:22:21.96 He laid in his backyard by a tree with a gun, the only 00:22:21.99\00:22:25.33 person that came was the mailman and he was convinced 00:22:25.36\00:22:28.66 that was the FBI. 00:22:28.70\00:22:30.06 I'm not sure why he didn't shoot, but I'm grateful. 00:22:30.10\00:22:34.73 The paranoia in that existence is unbelievable. 00:22:34.76\00:22:39.32 Oh yeah, they live in their houses with the shades pulled 00:22:39.35\00:22:41.94 down, and peek out every once in a while to see who was 00:22:41.97\00:22:44.67 walking by, but the rest of the time they're closed in the 00:22:44.70\00:22:47.36 closet scared to death of everybody. 00:22:47.39\00:22:49.41 That is not a life, that is a living death. 00:22:49.45\00:22:53.08 You don't even know, because at first the chemical, 00:22:53.11\00:22:56.99 or that feel good dopamine just says that this is the 00:22:57.03\00:23:00.87 greatest thing ever, the greatest thing ever. 00:23:00.91\00:23:03.03 When you actually sees how somebody lives, 00:23:03.07\00:23:05.16 it is absolutely sad. 00:23:05.20\00:23:06.96 You have seen a lot of research, can you share with us 00:23:07.00\00:23:11.21 a little more about that? 00:23:11.24\00:23:12.58 About the research? 00:23:12.61\00:23:14.58 Like when you talk about the brain chemistry, or meth 00:23:14.62\00:23:18.40 labs, or how people live, or even women coming in with 00:23:18.43\00:23:21.68 babies and still using meth in the middle of their 00:23:21.71\00:23:24.89 pregnancy, not even under- standing genetically what is 00:23:24.92\00:23:28.65 happening to this child and their development. 00:23:28.68\00:23:30.94 That is a whole big ball of wax. 00:23:30.98\00:23:33.00 The impact of methamphetamine on a developing child is 00:23:33.04\00:23:37.25 just now starting to be understood. 00:23:37.28\00:23:39.18 20 years ago the first study to come out was in 1989. 00:23:39.21\00:23:43.61 They did a scan on the babies of mothers who used 00:23:43.65\00:23:47.34 methamphetamine during pregnancy and 35% of them had 00:23:47.38\00:23:51.04 holes in their brains. 00:23:51.07\00:23:52.61 Holes in their brains just like their mothers. 00:23:52.64\00:23:54.78 From the chemical or the acids in meth, is it the same? 00:23:54.81\00:23:58.60 Yes, it is the same chemical. - I had no idea! 00:23:58.63\00:24:01.36 It's erodes holes in human brains, it erodes in the baby 00:24:01.40\00:24:05.22 brain too, but the babies, human infants in particular, 00:24:05.25\00:24:09.50 continue developing up to the first 21 years of life, but 00:24:09.53\00:24:12.97 especially the first two years there is this dramatic 00:24:13.01\00:24:16.41 explosion of brain cell growth. 00:24:16.45\00:24:17.70 So if you are missing 10% of your brain cells at birth, 00:24:17.73\00:24:21.40 that will be overgrown and overgrown and turn into 1% by 00:24:21.43\00:24:24.54 the time you are one year old and that is our salvation. 00:24:24.57\00:24:28.96 That is assuming that child is raised in a nurturing home 00:24:29.00\00:24:32.84 with parents who love it and talk to it and feed him. 00:24:32.87\00:24:36.52 That is not the case in the average meth abusing home. 00:24:36.56\00:24:40.62 So a baby who is born into a meth abused home with holes 00:24:40.66\00:24:44.29 in his brain already, and his mother beats him or shakes 00:24:44.33\00:24:47.82 him when he is a little bitty baby and ignores him and 00:24:47.85\00:24:51.31 doesn't feed him when he's a little older, 00:24:51.34\00:24:53.24 that child will not do well in school. 00:24:53.27\00:24:55.10 We are seeing large numbers of these kids coming into 00:24:55.13\00:24:57.70 special education programs in the public schools. 00:24:57.74\00:25:00.28 This was interesting for me, hopefully for you guys, 00:25:03.14\00:25:07.39 but with meth there are a lot of drugs we take. 00:25:07.43\00:25:11.08 I'm not going to add good or bad, but there is a lot of 00:25:11.11\00:25:14.79 drugs we take that our body can sort out and flush them 00:25:14.82\00:25:18.29 and all that, but with meth and the acids in meth we can't 00:25:18.33\00:25:21.76 do it, right? We can't get rid of it in the same way? 00:25:21.80\00:25:24.51 Well we metabolize meth amphetamine down to chemicals 00:25:24.54\00:25:27.19 that are themselves toxic, I call it the battery acid effect. 00:25:27.22\00:25:31.10 What is the stuff made out of? 00:25:31.13\00:25:32.92 Show them the canister of acetone, Freon, 00:25:32.96\00:25:35.31 all the chemicals that it is made out of. 00:25:35.35\00:25:37.64 This is what we make methamphetamine out of, what do 00:25:37.67\00:25:40.18 you suppose your body is going to turn it back into? 00:25:40.21\00:25:42.64 You break it down to the same kind of caustic chemicals it 00:25:42.68\00:25:46.19 is made out of, it's like eating battery acid. 00:25:46.23\00:25:48.51 It will destroy brain tissues. 00:25:48.54\00:25:50.53 As it passes the brain barrier, just like dripping acid 00:25:50.56\00:25:54.65 on this soft tissue. 00:25:54.68\00:25:56.37 Yes, and it's the susceptible soft tissue, but it also eats 00:25:56.41\00:25:59.71 holes in lungs and the heart and kidneys, and many other 00:25:59.74\00:26:03.01 organs are damaged by methamphetamines. 00:26:03.04\00:26:05.17 I have seen gums, teeth, you know the visual stuff that 00:26:05.21\00:26:09.88 you can see what they lot of addicts is in the gums and 00:26:09.92\00:26:14.56 teeth in the mouth. 00:26:14.59\00:26:15.86 It's the first thing that is most obvious. 00:26:15.89\00:26:17.95 Their teeth fall out as soon as six months after starting 00:26:17.98\00:26:21.57 using, because it constricts the blood supply to the gums. 00:26:21.61\00:26:25.16 So even healthy teeth will fall right out. 00:26:25.20\00:26:27.81 When your brother died, when you started to do research 00:26:32.02\00:26:35.84 on what this drug is, what kinds of things do you tell 00:26:35.88\00:26:39.66 family members of addicts? 00:26:39.70\00:26:41.74 How do you say, for one, not enable their loved one's 00:26:41.77\00:26:45.83 using, and do they survive with this craziness? 00:26:45.87\00:26:49.51 Number one we have to get past the denial. 00:26:49.54\00:26:51.99 That is a hard one, you don't want to believe it. 00:26:52.03\00:26:54.86 You do not want to think that your kid doing this. 00:26:54.89\00:26:57.94 Oh, it couldn't be my kid, I raised him in church. 00:26:57.97\00:27:00.98 This couldn't be happening. 00:27:01.02\00:27:02.31 The kid has a list of excuses a mile long. 00:27:02.34\00:27:05.30 He can tell you why he lost his job. 00:27:05.34\00:27:07.22 He can tell you why it's out of money. 00:27:07.26\00:27:09.08 He tell you why his wife left, he has got an excuse for 00:27:09.11\00:27:11.97 every day of the week. 00:27:12.00\00:27:13.38 If you want to believe all that stuff, you can keep your 00:27:13.41\00:27:15.81 head in the sand for as long as you want to. 00:27:15.85\00:27:18.67 But guys, denial does not work, denial kills. 00:27:18.70\00:27:21.46 While you are busy denying the obvious, your kid is 00:27:21.49\00:27:24.33 smoking is brains away in a back bedroom. 00:27:24.36\00:27:26.52 Denial does not work. 00:27:26.55\00:27:28.30 But once we have actually face the music and except it for 00:27:28.33\00:27:32.32 the fact that our kid has a problem and he needs some 00:27:32.35\00:27:35.49 help, now how do you make that kid get some help? 00:27:35.52\00:27:38.59 If he is under 18 it is relatively easy, you just sign 00:27:38.63\00:27:42.22 the papers and get him put into rehab. 00:27:42.25\00:27:44.63 But if he is over 18 you do not have any control over that 00:27:44.67\00:27:47.72 child. - I have seen that child kicking and screaming, 00:27:47.76\00:27:50.69 where we've done interventions, and the child is kicking 00:27:50.72\00:27:53.61 and screaming when we leave the facility. 00:27:53.65\00:27:55.76 I'm telling you to have the have a heart to do that, 00:27:55.79\00:27:58.22 because you may save his life or her life. 00:27:58.26\00:28:00.96 If being able to intervene and just say this is not about 00:28:00.99\00:28:04.37 whether you are going to like me tomorrow or not, this is 00:28:04.41\00:28:07.43 about I want you to be alive to raise your own family. 00:28:07.46\00:28:10.25 I want you to be alive to laugh out loud with people you 00:28:10.29\00:28:13.04 love and right now you're not going to get there 00:28:13.08\00:28:15.55 unless we intervene. - right, yes! 00:28:15.59\00:28:17.94 We had to take a strong stance against teenagers using. 00:28:17.98\00:28:21.88 I recommend drug testing in high school age kids by the 00:28:21.92\00:28:25.79 parents, even if the schools won't do it, 00:28:25.82\00:28:28.12 but parents need to. 00:28:28.15\00:28:29.61 My daughter was so mad, I keep drug testing kits with me 00:28:29.65\00:28:32.47 because I work with at risk folks. 00:28:32.50\00:28:33.95 If you are even glassy eyed I think, excuse me can you pee 00:28:33.99\00:28:37.19 in this? And people are furious with me. 00:28:37.23\00:28:40.45 But my daughter came home one day with this person that 00:28:40.48\00:28:43.56 was cutting and smoking weed. 00:28:43.59\00:28:45.00 I could smell the weed and I'm thinking, no way! 00:28:45.03\00:28:48.14 No way, because you can tell that your kids are running 00:28:48.17\00:28:50.98 around with folks that are using and you have to ask the 00:28:51.02\00:28:53.79 obvious question, are you using? 00:28:53.82\00:28:56.22 So I asked her and she looked at me like I can't believe 00:28:56.26\00:28:59.41 you asked me that. 00:28:59.44\00:29:00.41 I'm thinking, excuse me, but your friend has 00:29:00.43\00:29:03.26 got blood dripping down her hand practically 00:29:03.30\00:29:06.10 and she is smoking weed. 00:29:06.13\00:29:07.61 You can smell it. She said, but that is her. 00:29:07.64\00:29:09.98 I say Jackie, I just need to drug test you. 00:29:10.02\00:29:12.29 So she goes in there and pees in the cup and she brings it 00:29:12.32\00:29:15.53 out and she is furious, she is negative. 00:29:15.57\00:29:18.12 She is furious, but I'm like dancing, woo hoo! 00:29:18.15\00:29:21.70 Because I need that peace of mind. 00:29:21.74\00:29:23.77 Drug testing kits are cheap, they are easy to keep around. 00:29:23.80\00:29:27.79 It's almost like nowadays we don't have the luxury to be 00:29:27.82\00:29:31.77 unaware, we just don't have the luxury. 00:29:31.81\00:29:35.46 These drugs are deadly, they are not like, well I don't 00:29:35.50\00:29:39.98 know, not like they are in their 50's when people 00:29:40.01\00:29:42.53 were drinking or whatever. 00:29:42.57\00:29:43.72 Even though people died with that, 00:29:43.76\00:29:45.30 but these drugs are deadly. 00:29:45.33\00:29:47.54 I'm used to seeing all that stuff. 00:29:47.57\00:29:50.21 You know it is the deadliest thing, I'm sorry go ahead. 00:29:50.24\00:29:53.45 A drug test does not have to destroy trust in the family. 00:29:53.48\00:29:56.66 A drug test can establish trust in the family. 00:29:56.69\00:30:00.34 Where that kid proves to you that he is clean and that 00:30:00.37\00:30:04.25 he handled himself responsibly. 00:30:04.29\00:30:06.33 That gives him an opportunity to prove to you that 00:30:06.37\00:30:08.78 he is a responsible individual. 00:30:08.81\00:30:10.82 That builds trust in the family. 00:30:10.86\00:30:12.80 I must handle the wrong because she was mad at me for 00:30:12.83\00:30:15.13 a couple of days. 00:30:15.16\00:30:16.43 To me, and I think for a lot of us, we want to believe 00:30:18.38\00:30:23.06 that it is just not here, and I'm sure your family with 00:30:23.10\00:30:26.86 your brother, we just what to believe it's not here, 00:30:26.89\00:30:30.62 or it is not that bad, or it is not anything 00:30:30.65\00:30:33.07 I need to intervene. 00:30:33.11\00:30:34.39 I see situations where I think when I walk in and 00:30:34.42\00:30:37.89 everybody is having, after church, and everyone's 00:30:37.92\00:30:40.96 having potluck and I'm thinking does anybody see this 00:30:40.99\00:30:43.99 kid over here? Because I want to do a drug test. 00:30:44.03\00:30:46.96 It is like being able to be aware, because you will 00:30:47.00\00:30:49.90 save a life and help someone. 00:30:49.93\00:30:51.67 We have to get over our hesitancy to confront people, 00:30:51.70\00:30:56.42 especially our children. 00:30:56.45\00:30:57.86 We are hesitant to make a scene or cause a fuss or to 00:30:57.90\00:31:01.57 make a demand on our kids. 00:31:01.61\00:31:04.13 This is a matter of brain cells guys, this is not anybody's 00:31:04.16\00:31:07.93 pride or dignity at stake, this is brain cells. 00:31:07.96\00:31:11.28 Like hepatitis, both are some painful deaths. 00:31:11.31\00:31:14.80 You are talking liver and brain and tissues that 00:31:14.83\00:31:18.28 mean life or death. 00:31:18.31\00:31:19.65 HIV, HIV is making a huge comeback in the countryside's, 00:31:19.68\00:31:23.89 because addicts to do not care who they sleep with. 00:31:23.93\00:31:28.53 What would you tell, definitely educate yourself. 00:31:28.57\00:31:32.62 Test your kids if you're curious, if there is any 00:31:32.65\00:31:36.64 suspicion, and a feeling that you need to test somebody. 00:31:36.67\00:31:41.27 Anything else with families? 00:31:41.31\00:31:42.70 Once families have come to grips with the fact that this 00:31:42.74\00:31:45.62 kid has a problem, it's time to get out the tough love. 00:31:45.65\00:31:49.76 Tough love is hard, that means letting him face the 00:31:49.79\00:31:53.86 natural consequences of his decisions. 00:31:53.90\00:31:56.80 If that means that his car is impounded, leave the car 00:31:56.84\00:32:00.11 impounded, if it means he's in county jail, 00:32:00.15\00:32:02.45 leave him in county jail. 00:32:02.48\00:32:04.22 Let him face the consequences of the decisions he's 00:32:04.26\00:32:06.80 making so he can make stronger decisions. 00:32:06.84\00:32:08.28 So what will people think about our family? 00:32:08.31\00:32:09.72 Oh yes you see, that's the problem. 00:32:09.75\00:32:12.80 What will the church think? 00:32:12.83\00:32:14.08 What will the people of the Country Club say? 00:32:14.11\00:32:16.22 Oh yeah, the people at the Country Club are not 00:32:16.25\00:32:18.92 responsible for your kids brain, you are. 00:32:18.95\00:32:20.77 They are not going to bury him! 00:32:20.81\00:32:22.27 Every time you give that kid another hundred bucks, 00:32:22.31\00:32:24.38 you are putting another hole in his brain. 00:32:24.42\00:32:26.26 To me it is absolutely amazing to just say it straight up 00:32:26.30\00:32:32.56 this is the reality of it. 00:32:32.59\00:32:34.23 I think it gives us permission to act. 00:32:34.27\00:32:36.47 There was a group of kids in Georgia, where 17 junior 00:32:36.50\00:32:42.87 high school kids end up with syphilis. 00:32:42.91\00:32:45.02 Did you hear about that? 00:32:45.05\00:32:46.73 17, so definitely disease and folks are saying what's up 00:32:46.77\00:32:51.14 here, and they were meeting after school using and sleeping 00:32:51.18\00:32:55.52 together and watching porn and all that stuff. 00:32:55.55\00:32:57.89 It was because they were bored, it was a very affluent 00:32:57.92\00:33:01.75 area, so for us to bury our heads is just saying we have 00:33:01.79\00:33:05.59 no idea the society we are living in. 00:33:05.62\00:33:07.50 To me, I don't even care anymore if I offend someone, 00:33:07.54\00:33:11.47 I think we have to talk, we have to say out loud that 00:33:11.51\00:33:15.39 this is out there and that meth is in every state that 00:33:15.42\00:33:19.27 I go to now as I travel and speak in schools. 00:33:19.31\00:33:22.25 Meth is just taking over as the drug of choice. 00:33:22.28\00:33:25.19 It is cheap and easily made. 00:33:25.23\00:33:27.31 Cheap and it's readily available and the 00:33:27.34\00:33:28.98 kids think it's safe. 00:33:29.02\00:33:30.57 They have heard about crack babies and they don't want 00:33:30.60\00:33:32.69 to have anything to do with that cocaine, but they think 00:33:32.73\00:33:34.79 methamphetamine is safe. 00:33:34.82\00:33:36.50 They can take by mouth and they don't have to shoot a 00:33:36.54\00:33:39.59 needle, they can smoke it like a pipe like marijuana. 00:33:39.63\00:33:42.44 They think it is a and it is far more destructive 00:33:42.47\00:33:45.25 than any amount of cocaine. 00:33:45.29\00:33:47.08 So breaking denial, that's definitely, tough love. 00:33:47.12\00:33:50.88 So what does tough love look like? 00:33:50.91\00:33:53.00 Tough love is hard to do. 00:33:53.03\00:33:55.02 Tough love, there is three major barriers to tough love. 00:33:55.06\00:33:58.27 Number one is denial, like we had talked about. 00:33:58.30\00:34:00.34 Number two is fear, you don't want to keep your kid out 00:34:00.37\00:34:03.79 of the house because you know he will go with his drug 00:34:03.83\00:34:07.21 buddies and might get killed. 00:34:07.25\00:34:08.71 But he is getting killed in your back bedroom too. 00:34:08.75\00:34:12.18 So let's not be afraid, let's be afraid of the right 00:34:12.21\00:34:16.10 thing, let's be afraid of drug use, not the punishment. 00:34:16.14\00:34:19.83 Then there is always an underlying element of guilt. 00:34:19.86\00:34:23.56 Parents feel responsible for what their kids have done. 00:34:23.60\00:34:27.27 They feel like they should have prevented it. 00:34:27.30\00:34:29.44 They should have known better than to let them run around 00:34:29.47\00:34:31.70 with those kids, they should have stopped it. 00:34:31.73\00:34:33.42 They feel all this guilt, and sometimes it is false guilt. 00:34:33.46\00:34:37.99 You blame yourself for everything your kid has done. 00:34:38.02\00:34:40.67 Take that false guilt and thrown out the window. 00:34:40.71\00:34:43.29 You are not responsible for every decision your kid has 00:34:43.32\00:34:46.08 ever made, but underneath it all there is always 00:34:46.12\00:34:49.07 a generous dose of real guilt. 00:34:49.11\00:34:50.66 True guilt, I know where I failed my children and 00:34:50.70\00:34:55.19 you know where you failed your children. 00:34:55.22\00:34:56.93 Nobody is a perfect parent. 00:34:56.96\00:34:58.38 You take your true guilt to the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:34:58.42\00:35:01.25 Let Him forgive you and then forgive yourself. 00:35:01.28\00:35:07.26 And now you can do the tough love that you have to do 00:35:07.30\00:35:11.02 to save that child's life, but you can't do it while you're 00:35:11.06\00:35:13.92 hauling around a ton of guilt. 00:35:13.95\00:35:15.67 You have to set that down. 00:35:15.71\00:35:17.36 We are going to go ahead and take a break but 00:35:17.40\00:35:19.99 I want to come back to that. 00:35:20.02\00:35:21.07 Also on our next segment we are going to ask some 00:35:21.11\00:35:24.33 questions, I mean they're going to ask us questions 00:35:24.37\00:35:27.55 asked at the café. 00:35:27.59\00:35:28.85 So stay with us we will be right back. 00:35:28.89\00:35:30.46 Think you've seen it all? Think again. 00:35:35.96\00:35:38.86 Cheri Peters is back for a second season of 00:35:40.63\00:35:43.41 Celebrating Life In Recovery with more lives, 00:35:43.44\00:35:46.18 more stories and more miracles. 00:35:46.22\00:35:48.91 Watch the shocking, inspiring, and the incredible. 00:35:48.94\00:35:53.20 Check your local listings to find out when 00:35:53.23\00:35:55.64 Celebrating Life In Recovery comes to you and get 00:35:55.67\00:35:59.28 ready for another dose of reality, Cheri style. 00:35:59.31\00:36:02.88 Were talking about tough love, and a lot of people have 00:36:18.14\00:36:21.54 misconceptions about what that is. 00:36:21.58\00:36:24.53 If you have a family member that is using and you are 00:36:24.57\00:36:27.77 trying to set boundaries around them, what does that 00:36:27.80\00:36:30.97 exactly mean to have tough love? 00:36:31.00\00:36:33.70 You are talking before the break about breaking denial, 00:36:33.73\00:36:36.73 getting yourself educated, setting boundaries, talk a 00:36:36.76\00:36:39.50 little bit more about what it is and what it isn't. 00:36:39.54\00:36:43.08 Tough love is going to be hard to do on an individual 00:36:43.11\00:36:46.62 basis because every situation is different. 00:36:46.65\00:36:49.50 What it boils down to is you don't give them any money, 00:36:49.54\00:36:52.81 and you don't let them live at your place, and you don't 00:36:52.84\00:36:55.58 let them use your car, and they don't lie to their boss. 00:36:55.61\00:36:58.47 If they get put in jail you let them stay there, oh are 00:36:58.51\00:37:01.34 they going to complain. - right! 00:37:01.37\00:37:02.69 You have abandoned me, and you have ignored me, you 00:37:02.73\00:37:05.93 hate me, they are going to accuse you of all these things. 00:37:05.96\00:37:09.55 But if somebody you know it's going to be compromised, 00:37:09.59\00:37:13.15 drinking, drugs or whatever, you don't want 00:37:13.18\00:37:16.13 them driving your car, so what you're doing is just 00:37:16.17\00:37:18.26 setting appropriate boundaries. 00:37:18.29\00:37:19.94 Right, you must set limits. 00:37:19.98\00:37:21.56 If you're going to use drugs I can't stop you, you are 00:37:21.59\00:37:24.00 over 18 and I can't stop you. 00:37:24.04\00:37:25.34 But I can keep you from using them in my house. 00:37:25.37\00:37:27.77 - and driving my car. 00:37:27.80\00:37:29.51 I'm not going to give you any money to buy dope with. 00:37:29.55\00:37:31.78 I'm not even going to pay your electric bill because 00:37:31.81\00:37:34.01 you are responsible for your electric bill. 00:37:34.04\00:37:36.50 If you are spending all your money on dope and 00:37:36.54\00:37:38.93 you don't pay your electric bill that is not my problem, 00:37:38.96\00:37:40.65 that is your problem. 00:37:40.69\00:37:41.87 And being able to even say that, and some people say I have to 00:37:41.90\00:37:45.82 be angry at them to do that, you really don't. 00:37:45.85\00:37:47.87 It is just the way it is. 00:37:47.90\00:37:50.38 You need to be very firm and know in your mind that you 00:37:50.41\00:37:54.02 are not going to cave in, because you know that every 00:37:54.05\00:37:57.00 time you give that kid at another hundred bucks you are 00:37:57.03\00:37:59.95 putting another hole in his brain. 00:37:59.98\00:38:01.66 If that is firmly in your mind then you are not even 00:38:01.70\00:38:04.70 tempted to give him any money. 00:38:04.74\00:38:06.28 I have never thought of it that way, when you said that 00:38:06.31\00:38:09.38 I was thinking, oh man, no addict on the planet that 00:38:09.41\00:38:12.45 watches this movie is ever going to 00:38:12.48\00:38:13.91 a hundred bucks again. 00:38:13.95\00:38:15.18 Just from you. 00:38:15.21\00:38:17.02 I hope not, but when they make all those accusations against 00:38:17.06\00:38:19.96 you, you don't care, you don't love me, you're not doing 00:38:20.00\00:38:23.04 what you're supposed to do, you have not abandoned that 00:38:23.07\00:38:25.95 child as long as you are still praying for that child. 00:38:25.98\00:38:28.84 You don't give them any money, you don't help them out 00:38:28.88\00:38:31.56 anyway, but as long as you are still praying for that 00:38:31.60\00:38:34.25 kid, you have not abandoned him. - exactly! 00:38:34.28\00:38:36.88 You may get tired of it, don't get discouraged, you keep 00:38:36.91\00:38:39.82 praying, it might be years, but you keep praying. 00:38:39.85\00:38:43.71 Surround yourself by people that will 00:38:43.75\00:38:45.69 affirm and edify you. 00:38:45.72\00:38:46.88 Other people will join you in prayer, because powerful 00:38:46.92\00:38:49.70 prayer is done in pairs. - right! 00:38:49.73\00:38:52.06 As long as you are praying for them you have not 00:38:52.09\00:38:54.99 abandoned them, that is important to understand because 00:38:55.02\00:38:57.28 you feel like you have abandoned them. 00:38:57.32\00:38:58.95 You can't talk to your addict kid, he can't hear a word 00:38:58.98\00:39:03.61 you say to him, the only person who can talk to a meth 00:39:03.64\00:39:08.24 addict is the Holy Spirit. 00:39:08.27\00:39:10.17 Every time you pray for that kid, the Holy Spirit speaks 00:39:10.21\00:39:13.62 into his heart and he understands every word. 00:39:13.65\00:39:16.11 So don't get tired of it, don't get discouraged, keep 00:39:16.15\00:39:19.82 praying even though you're not feeling it. 00:39:19.85\00:39:21.81 And know that He is hearing God. He may not be hearing you. 00:39:21.85\00:39:24.72 And he had to pray with both hands, you can't pray with 00:39:24.75\00:39:27.98 one hand and give him 50 bucks with the other. 00:39:28.01\00:39:29.64 It doesn't work that way. 00:39:29.68\00:39:30.81 When you say that I'm thinking what do you mean both hands? 00:39:30.84\00:39:33.10 You can't pray with one hand and give him 50 bucks with the other 00:39:34.41\00:39:38.02 You know what is fun, I can tell that you are so clear, 00:39:38.06\00:39:42.17 do not enable this child. 00:39:42.20\00:39:43.52 You know what it feels like to lose somebody you love, 00:39:43.56\00:39:47.08 you do not want to lose this child. 00:39:47.11\00:39:49.35 I just want to say that every single child, husband, wife, 00:39:49.38\00:39:54.36 whoever the addict is, make sure that they know that they 00:39:54.40\00:39:59.34 are loved, I think that is important. 00:39:59.38\00:40:02.64 There is a book that I love calling 'Caring Enough To 00:40:02.68\00:40:05.65 Confront', do I care enough about you to confront? 00:40:05.68\00:40:09.31 And I do, so if you are acting out and I have to set 00:40:09.35\00:40:12.94 limits, I'm just going to repeat myself. 00:40:12.98\00:40:14.75 I am doing this because I know that you are using. 00:40:14.78\00:40:17.46 The person can yell, you are a na-na-na and na-na-na and 00:40:17.49\00:40:21.30 I'm doing this because you are using and they can yell again. 00:40:21.34\00:40:23.30 I am doing this because you are using and if I have just 00:40:23.34\00:40:26.93 repeat myself like a parrot, I can't get hooked into the 00:40:26.97\00:40:30.36 argument, I can just say again I am doing this because 00:40:30.39\00:40:33.74 I know you are using. 00:40:33.78\00:40:34.98 Being able to be firm, and there are times where you are 00:40:35.01\00:40:37.99 going to want to cry and cry and cry, but just cry, 00:40:38.02\00:40:40.96 but do not give them 50 bucks. 00:40:40.99\00:40:42.75 That is why you need a support group of people around you 00:40:42.79\00:40:45.87 that understand what you're going through. 00:40:45.90\00:40:47.43 You got to level with the people in your Sunday school 00:40:47.47\00:40:50.17 class or church and tell them what you are really going 00:40:50.20\00:40:52.87 through so they can pray intelligently with you. 00:40:52.90\00:40:55.10 There will be some who will sit on the other side of the 00:40:55.14\00:40:57.98 church, I don't want to sit next to you because your kid 00:40:58.02\00:41:00.83 is a drug addict, just pray for them too. 00:41:00.86\00:41:03.43 You need people around you that understand what you're 00:41:03.47\00:41:06.52 going through, and if you are trying to wallpaper over it 00:41:06.56\00:41:09.89 and deny to the people around you that you have a problem, 00:41:09.92\00:41:13.22 that is not helping you, that is isolating you. 00:41:13.26\00:41:16.44 I love the fact that you said to just make sure that you 00:41:16.47\00:41:19.35 can talk to someone, and if I know someone is going to 00:41:19.38\00:41:22.22 judge me I'm going to talk to someone else. 00:41:22.25\00:41:23.77 Because right now I am struggling enough, it is not 00:41:23.80\00:41:26.74 about your acceptance anymore, it's about my spouse or my 00:41:26.78\00:41:29.60 child's life and so I don't want to even, 00:41:29.64\00:41:32.72 I can't get wrapped up in all that stuff. 00:41:32.76\00:41:35.77 We isolate ourselves when we are faced with something 00:41:35.81\00:41:38.12 like this, because we don't want to tell the neighbors. 00:41:38.16\00:41:41.13 We don't want to tell our friends and we have to tell 00:41:41.17\00:41:43.92 these people, we have to find somebody that you can level 00:41:43.96\00:41:46.68 with, and be honest with, be genuine and have 00:41:46.71\00:41:51.14 people praying with you. 00:41:51.18\00:41:52.61 I know I'm going to so step on toes right now, I'm going 00:41:52.65\00:41:55.72 to say something and at first I was not going to say it. 00:41:55.76\00:41:58.80 I was actually biting my tongue, do not share this. 00:41:58.83\00:42:00.92 But I'm going to share something, 00:42:00.96\00:42:02.44 and tell me what you think. 00:42:02.47\00:42:03.84 I get asked to do a one on one home intervention with a 00:42:03.88\00:42:07.16 meth addict let's say, in New York. 00:42:07.19\00:42:09.35 I go in and this was a beautiful home, a doctor's home. 00:42:09.39\00:42:14.26 Incredible, and I was a little intimidated because it was 00:42:14.30\00:42:18.19 just beautiful and I am an addict in recovery so to me. 00:42:18.23\00:42:22.77 So I sit down, I love God and I pray before I do anything. 00:42:22.80\00:42:26.65 I think Jesus gives me the Holy Spirit and I am equipped 00:42:26.68\00:42:30.50 when I walk in the door, and that is the only way 00:42:30.53\00:42:32.78 I can do this kind of work. 00:42:32.82\00:42:34.13 So I go in and the father comes in and son who was 22 and 00:42:34.16\00:42:36.99 a meth addict who was out running the streets and out of 00:42:37.03\00:42:40.20 control, and the Holy Spirit tells me that the father is 00:42:40.24\00:42:43.38 having an affair and is addicted to porn. 00:42:43.42\00:42:45.94 When he cleans up, his son will clean up. 00:42:45.97\00:42:48.83 I'm thinking, oh man, don't tell me that. 00:42:48.87\00:42:51.70 I so know that God supernaturally 00:42:51.73\00:42:56.42 leads us in our recovery. 00:42:56.45\00:42:57.91 He supernaturally leads us in ministry and so I knew 00:42:57.94\00:43:00.92 that, that impression, I didn't hear a voice, but that 00:43:00.95\00:43:03.90 impression that I got was a very real. 00:43:03.93\00:43:06.20 Sometimes in families check your stuff, not saying that 00:43:06.23\00:43:10.04 it is anybody's fault, but if you are sexually acting out, 00:43:10.07\00:43:13.22 if you are using yourself, if you are bringing drugs and 00:43:13.26\00:43:16.37 alcohol into the home and your kids are acting out, 00:43:16.41\00:43:18.51 it's because, it's almost like we let the devil come in and 00:43:18.54\00:43:21.76 then we don't want him to play with our children. 00:43:21.80\00:43:23.64 So there is that sense, to me, tough love involves being 00:43:23.67\00:43:27.95 tough with yourself, do you agree with what I'm saying? 00:43:27.98\00:43:32.22 Yes I understand what you are saying. 00:43:32.26\00:43:33.56 When I finally got to say to this doctor, do you have 00:43:33.59\00:43:38.34 anything you would like to talk about? 00:43:38.37\00:43:40.05 He looked at me and lost all the color in his face and 00:43:40.09\00:43:43.46 I remember, he was like what? 00:43:43.50\00:43:45.85 God said, Cheri say it. 00:43:45.89\00:43:48.79 I said do you have any porn addictions or anything? 00:43:48.82\00:43:50.83 He said I knew you're going to say that. 00:43:50.87\00:43:52.43 So God was already working on him. 00:43:52.46\00:43:55.00 So being able to honestly say to him, is you know what? 00:43:55.03\00:44:00.22 Clean up, and honestly look at yourself so that 00:44:00.26\00:44:04.86 you can be there for your children, so you can be there 00:44:04.90\00:44:07.40 for your community, or your church, but don't think 00:44:07.44\00:44:09.67 you are going to carry all this stuff in your pocket 00:44:09.70\00:44:11.90 and just give lip service and somebody 00:44:11.94\00:44:14.43 life is going to change. 00:44:14.47\00:44:15.71 You really have to be serious about wanting to change your 00:44:15.75\00:44:19.02 life and reach out to them. 00:44:19.05\00:44:20.30 That is one thing about the Lord, He is genuine. 00:44:20.33\00:44:22.62 He won't put up with a phony. 00:44:22.66\00:44:24.88 He won't be mocked, it says in the Bible. 00:44:24.91\00:44:26.53 I'm thinking man, we're going to open it up for questions. 00:44:26.56\00:44:30.98 I'm just am thrilled with who is at the café, so Brian you 00:44:31.02\00:44:35.41 have been on other shows and I love you, what do 00:44:35.44\00:44:39.36 you think about what is being said? 00:44:39.39\00:44:40.87 Well doctor first of all, I really enjoy what you are 00:44:40.91\00:44:43.68 saying here and I live on an Indian reservation. 00:44:43.72\00:44:45.81 Of course meth knows no boundaries, these people that 00:44:45.85\00:44:49.97 are cooking this meth and seeing an opportunity to make 00:44:50.01\00:44:53.27 some money on the Indian reservations, and it's happening 00:44:53.30\00:44:56.53 all over the United States and it is becoming 00:44:56.56\00:45:01.11 an epidemic in Indian country. 00:45:01.14\00:45:03.16 Talking about tough love, I live on a small reservation, 00:45:03.19\00:45:06.58 800 members, so everybody knows everybody, and everybody 00:45:06.62\00:45:09.98 knows what everybody is doing. 00:45:10.01\00:45:11.46 That is the message that our people need to hear is that 00:45:11.50\00:45:15.69 we need to have a tough love in our community, and we need 00:45:15.72\00:45:19.88 to stop this now. 00:45:19.91\00:45:21.24 What has been the recovery rate of these meth addicts? 00:45:21.28\00:45:24.40 One thing you said is that you need the Holy Spirit. 00:45:24.43\00:45:27.44 It is by the grace of God that I am here today because 00:45:27.48\00:45:30.45 I'm recovering, a drug and alcohol addict myself. 00:45:30.48\00:45:33.35 It was only through the grace of God that allowed me to 00:45:33.39\00:45:36.78 be here today, but what is the recovery rate you're seeing 00:45:36.81\00:45:40.17 from these meth addict's? 00:45:40.20\00:45:41.75 Meth addicts take a lot longer to recover from addiction 00:45:41.78\00:45:45.30 than say an alcoholic, or even a cocaine addict. 00:45:45.33\00:45:48.17 The traditional program was a 28 day program that was 00:45:48.21\00:45:52.19 developed for alcohol and it was effective for alcohol. 00:45:52.23\00:45:56.18 But 28 days doesn't cut it for methamphetamine. 00:45:56.22\00:45:59.41 After 28 day inpatient program we still have about 00:45:59.44\00:46:02.76 an 88% failure rate, they go back and use again. 00:46:02.80\00:46:06.08 So they spaced it out to maybe six months, 00:46:06.12\00:46:08.90 maybe six months is enough. 00:46:08.93\00:46:10.42 With a six-month program, a real high-quality one, 00:46:10.46\00:46:13.73 you get about a 50% yield. 00:46:13.76\00:46:15.77 The other 50% go back and use again. 00:46:15.81\00:46:18.52 So now we are spacing then out to a full year, 00:46:18.56\00:46:21.51 12 to 18 months, and that 12 to 18 months has to work 00:46:21.55\00:46:25.69 on not just the physical addiction, 00:46:25.72\00:46:27.53 but also the psychological addiction and the 00:46:27.57\00:46:30.36 spiritual deprivation that these people have. 00:46:30.40\00:46:33.22 And with a really good comprehensive program, 00:46:33.25\00:46:36.32 a 12 month program has about a 90% success rate. 00:46:36.36\00:46:39.36 That is amazing, because even when you talk about those 00:46:39.40\00:46:42.64 neural chemical things that have to repair itself, 00:46:42.68\00:46:45.50 that repairing happens within that time frame? - right! 00:46:45.53\00:46:49.65 The neuro-chemicals recover, but synapses start 00:46:49.68\00:46:53.19 firing again, neuro tracks start functioning again. 00:46:53.23\00:46:56.67 They grow new synapses new dendrites and it recovers some 00:46:56.70\00:47:00.75 function in areas that we thought had no function, 00:47:00.78\00:47:04.80 but it is not going to happen overnight. 00:47:04.83\00:47:06.67 You didn't get sick overnight, and you are not going 00:47:06.71\00:47:08.94 to get better overnight. 00:47:08.98\00:47:10.46 So Brian, you talked about even on the reservations 00:47:10.50\00:47:13.32 putting programs together and people are literally looking 00:47:13.36\00:47:16.00 at all that stuff right now. 00:47:16.04\00:47:17.61 I think that the best of the best programs, if it's 00:47:17.64\00:47:21.58 30 days for a meth addict, you are saying 00:47:21.61\00:47:23.64 it is not enough? 00:47:23.68\00:47:25.49 30 days in patient is a beginning, but it is not the 00:47:25.52\00:47:28.79 total picture, they need another several months of outpatient 00:47:28.82\00:47:32.59 intensive rehabilitation, past that 30 days. 00:47:32.63\00:47:36.05 And for the rest of the year, intensive 00:47:36.09\00:47:39.30 12-step participation where they have a place where 00:47:39.34\00:47:42.44 they can go, where people understand what 00:47:42.47\00:47:44.22 they are going through. 00:47:44.25\00:47:45.30 Somebody knows what it means to have a using dream, 00:47:45.33\00:47:47.50 talk about the time you had a using dream and 00:47:47.53\00:47:49.88 woke up screaming for it. 00:47:49.92\00:47:51.48 People who understand than then they can support 00:47:51.51\00:47:54.54 each other, but if you are in an environment where 00:47:54.57\00:47:57.56 nobody knows what you are dealing with, 00:47:57.59\00:48:00.24 you feel abandoned and you will use again. 00:48:00.28\00:48:02.86 Sometimes in a typical church environment people are 00:48:02.89\00:48:07.10 not educated enough to walk a meth and through recovery. 00:48:07.13\00:48:11.30 There are some specialized 12-step programs 00:48:11.34\00:48:13.87 for methamphetamines, one is Celebrate Recovery. 00:48:13.90\00:48:16.67 - I love that program. 00:48:16.71\00:48:17.68 That is a wonderful program. 00:48:17.69\00:48:18.86 - I used to run the program in my church. 00:48:18.90\00:48:21.00 - we have one in our church too, and it is so powerful 00:48:21.03\00:48:24.53 because it is real addicts talking to real addicts. 00:48:24.56\00:48:27.99 No phony stuff, no fill in the blanks, this is real life. 00:48:28.02\00:48:33.68 What is fun about those programs is that an addict 00:48:33.72\00:48:36.19 will come in and start trying to play somebody, 00:48:36.22\00:48:38.62 everybody in the room is like what's up, don't play me. 00:48:38.66\00:48:42.54 A normal group will be going, really your grandma is dead, 00:48:42.58\00:48:46.43 and you need 20 bucks? 00:48:46.46\00:48:47.43 Grandmother you know I never had a grandmother. 00:48:50.17\00:48:52.78 - It's like give it up. 00:48:52.81\00:48:54.72 So it is fun to be able to be with people that know, 00:48:54.76\00:48:59.15 and also to realize the length of recovery for folks. 00:48:59.18\00:49:03.09 I think we want people to stop using, and as soon as 00:49:03.13\00:49:07.01 they stop the next day we want them eating 00:49:07.04\00:49:08.81 brown rice and behaving, and it doesn't happen. 00:49:08.84\00:49:12.32 It is a process, you heal from the inside out. 00:49:12.35\00:49:15.75 Jesus will heal your heart first, anger, pain, shame, 00:49:15.79\00:49:19.98 guilt, He would heal all that stuff, that is 00:49:20.01\00:49:22.77 a spiritual thing, then we move on to your mind. 00:49:22.80\00:49:25.52 Attitudes, relationships, thought patterns, 00:49:25.55\00:49:28.06 and the last thing to change is your behavior. 00:49:28.09\00:49:30.52 You know what's interesting, I think you said this. 00:49:30.56\00:49:35.26 That track that I am so fascinated with is that we 00:49:35.29\00:49:39.93 repetitive right behavior and right choices really help 00:49:39.96\00:49:43.79 that to restore itself, so any discipline, exercising, 00:49:43.82\00:49:47.61 and getting out side and eating the right things, 00:49:47.65\00:49:49.42 any discipline behavior. 00:49:49.46\00:49:51.48 The in-patient rehab program, if I can't control myself by 00:49:51.51\00:49:56.70 my own initiative, maybe somebody else can control me. 00:49:56.74\00:50:00.33 So they put them in a rehab center where they make 00:50:00.37\00:50:03.14 them get up at six o'clock every morning, stand in 00:50:03.17\00:50:05.45 line and mop the floors, make the bed, do the stuff 00:50:05.49\00:50:07.73 you didn't want to do, because every time 00:50:07.77\00:50:09.58 you do something you did not want to do, you are 00:50:09.62\00:50:12.88 doing a bench press with your self-control track. 00:50:12.92\00:50:16.14 It grows new connections, new synapses, and 00:50:16.18\00:50:19.62 we regain function, but it doesn't happen in 28 days. 00:50:19.65\00:50:23.39 We learn this, and I think that as you learn this 00:50:23.43\00:50:26.67 and are working with addicts is when somebody says, 00:50:26.71\00:50:30.17 no I do not want to mop the floor, we live on a ranch. 00:50:30.21\00:50:33.26 I don't want to go pick up horse poop, I have to say, 00:50:33.30\00:50:36.47 I get excited because they are repairing damage in 00:50:36.51\00:50:39.61 their neuro chemistry, and even if they think it is about 00:50:39.64\00:50:42.55 horse poop, it is not right now. 00:50:42.58\00:50:44.50 This is repairing what the drug took from you. 00:50:44.54\00:50:48.48 So I can't even let them get out of the task. 00:50:48.51\00:50:51.85 It becomes easy and spontaneous and it is natural 00:50:51.89\00:50:55.05 to control those cravings and desires because 00:50:55.08\00:50:58.21 you've been scooping horse poop. 00:50:58.25\00:50:59.65 I love that, I love that, okay Curly do you have 00:50:59.69\00:51:02.96 horse poop, you have a question? 00:51:03.00\00:51:04.80 Horse poop to Curly, I'm doing good, I'm doing good. 00:51:04.83\00:51:08.94 I have a comment, you were talking earlier about how 00:51:08.98\00:51:12.56 paranoia sets in when people sit in their house with 00:51:12.59\00:51:15.73 the blinds shut, I laugh because I have been there. 00:51:15.77\00:51:19.12 You know, it's one night I spent the whole time 00:51:19.16\00:51:21.87 tiptoeing around the house so no one could hear me. 00:51:21.91\00:51:24.59 No one lived around me. 00:51:24.62\00:51:26.46 I woke up the next day and my calves were tight 00:51:26.50\00:51:28.96 and I thought man what happened? 00:51:28.99\00:51:30.75 That stuff happens, hiding in the closet I've done that. 00:51:30.78\00:51:33.78 You think someone is coming up to the door. 00:51:33.82\00:51:36.08 - people don't think that those are true stories. 00:51:36.12\00:51:39.69 - they are, and I laugh about it now, but it is real. 00:51:39.72\00:51:42.93 Those people that are watching this now, let me tell 00:51:42.97\00:51:46.14 you what, personally I know that stuff happens. 00:51:46.17\00:51:48.79 I am able to laugh at it now because there is 00:51:48.83\00:51:51.45 another side, there is something more than that. 00:51:51.48\00:51:54.79 Once you get there, it's such a good life and so 00:51:54.82\00:51:57.58 much better and you can look at that stuff and laugh 00:51:57.61\00:52:00.00 at it because you have been there and it is real. 00:52:00.03\00:52:02.34 There is probably someone watching now that may be at that 00:52:02.38\00:52:05.38 point, they just did it last night, something like that. 00:52:05.41\00:52:08.37 I want to let them know, man, get past it. 00:52:08.41\00:52:10.59 Once you take that initial step, life is so much better. 00:52:10.62\00:52:14.31 It is great and there is hope, give it to God and 00:52:14.35\00:52:18.35 let Him take care of it. 00:52:18.39\00:52:19.40 As your brain heals you start enjoying life again, 00:52:19.43\00:52:21.78 start laughing again. 00:52:21.82\00:52:23.86 That's right, I'm back to the point where I got my 00:52:23.89\00:52:27.06 funny back, for years, literally years, I would be 00:52:27.10\00:52:29.94 funny now and then but it was all about the drugs. 00:52:29.97\00:52:32.78 - now I got my funny back, I like that. 00:52:32.82\00:52:35.75 I love it, there's other things to do, 00:52:35.78\00:52:38.68 there is more than just drugs. 00:52:38.72\00:52:40.44 As you were starting to recover, what was interesting 00:52:40.48\00:52:43.40 was your whole eyes changed and they lit up. 00:52:43.44\00:52:48.77 You focus more and all that stuff. 00:52:48.81\00:52:51.17 It is fun to watch that, it's okay, it's happening. 00:52:51.20\00:52:54.09 - I'm a pretty good actor, I would go places after 00:52:54.12\00:52:57.28 a night of drugging and I will put on a show, but 00:52:57.31\00:53:00.32 I was miserable inside and around people you try 00:53:00.35\00:53:03.07 to make yourself put on that show because you don't 00:53:03.10\00:53:05.79 want them to know, you don't want them to know 00:53:05.82\00:53:07.40 you are using again or anything like that. 00:53:07.44\00:53:08.95 But you don't have to do that anymore, it's great. 00:53:08.98\00:53:11.95 Those people watching give it to the Lord and 00:53:11.98\00:53:14.23 He will take care of it and life is great. 00:53:14.27\00:53:16.62 That's amazing, you don't have to earn it, 00:53:16.66\00:53:18.98 He just does it. 00:53:19.01\00:53:19.98 No, not at all.
