You know, Canvasback is an amazing ministry. 00:00:02.56\00:00:05.80 Thirty eight years they've been in operation 00:00:05.83\00:00:07.67 coming to islands and atolls in the Pacific 00:00:07.70\00:00:10.01 to do an incredible work. 00:00:10.04\00:00:11.67 I'm here today in Majuro 00:00:11.71\00:00:13.38 standing in front of the hospital. 00:00:13.41\00:00:15.54 Why hospital? 00:00:15.58\00:00:16.91 Well, because Canvasback works hand in glove with hospitals, 00:00:16.95\00:00:20.45 bringing specialists from many different fields 00:00:20.48\00:00:22.85 to help them out 00:00:22.88\00:00:24.22 and things that they just don't do, 00:00:24.25\00:00:26.02 and aren't able to provide the community. 00:00:26.05\00:00:27.96 But there's more yet to come. 00:00:27.99\00:00:29.42 Wa kuk wa jimor. 00:01:03.93\00:01:05.46 What does it mean? 00:01:05.49\00:01:06.83 Well, it's Marshallese for canoes 00:01:06.86\00:01:08.20 bring people together. 00:01:08.23\00:01:10.07 They've been making canoes for, well, who knows how long. 00:01:10.10\00:01:13.17 It wasn't though, 00:01:13.20\00:01:14.54 until the 1800s that Westerners discovered 00:01:14.57\00:01:17.17 these canoes, and they marveled at them. 00:01:17.21\00:01:18.94 The way they sail, the way they handle. 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.04 And then canoe enthusiasts from all over the world 00:01:21.08\00:01:23.65 begin looking at them. 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.01 And they're the admiration of all the Pacific. 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.02 Well, today, I want to show you 00:01:28.05\00:01:29.58 some more of the actual manufacturing process. 00:01:29.62\00:01:31.95 It's exciting to see it's, it's a lot of fun. 00:01:31.99\00:01:34.52 So come on, let's check it out. 00:01:34.56\00:01:35.89 I used to work for the museum. 00:01:39.03\00:01:40.46 So 26 years ago, 00:01:40.50\00:01:44.13 we went to the other islands 00:01:44.17\00:01:45.57 and document the step by step construction of canoes, 00:01:45.60\00:01:48.60 and they were kind of nice. 00:01:48.64\00:01:51.27 People in the other islands were asking, 00:01:51.31\00:01:53.04 why would we do that? 00:01:53.07\00:01:54.48 Because they have canoes. 00:01:54.51\00:01:56.38 I say, "Well, that's why we're doing it." 00:01:56.41\00:01:58.58 Because you have this knowledge, 00:01:58.61\00:02:00.18 you have the skills to, 00:02:00.22\00:02:01.55 so we can document it for future generations. 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.45 So this was an old generation 00:02:04.49\00:02:05.95 that had the old techniques and talent. 00:02:05.99\00:02:08.29 Everything they have all that, not just these skills, 00:02:08.32\00:02:12.29 but the legends 00:02:12.33\00:02:13.66 and everything else that goes with it. 00:02:13.70\00:02:15.93 So we were fortunate that was just the right timing, 00:02:15.96\00:02:18.30 perfect timing for that. 00:02:18.33\00:02:19.70 Why did you have such a burden to gather the ancient customs 00:02:19.73\00:02:23.61 and bring him in today? 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.67 Well, um, you know, 00:02:25.71\00:02:29.08 when we talk in about the skills, 00:02:29.11\00:02:32.41 there was so many kids running around, 00:02:32.45\00:02:34.55 they actually came and learn 00:02:34.58\00:02:36.92 how to build the canoes with us. 00:02:36.95\00:02:38.52 And I was very fascinated with that. 00:02:38.55\00:02:41.42 I thought, well, that's really great, 00:02:41.46\00:02:42.86 because they're really interested 00:02:42.89\00:02:44.23 in the culture. 00:02:44.26\00:02:45.59 Gives them something to grab onto and to live for. 00:02:45.63\00:02:47.03 Really, yeah. 00:02:47.06\00:02:48.40 But then I found out later, they were all dropouts. 00:02:48.43\00:02:50.57 Really? 00:02:50.60\00:02:51.93 And a lot of them again, this school system, 00:02:51.97\00:02:55.14 if you do not pass the high school exam, 00:02:55.17\00:02:57.14 you won't be able to go to high school. 00:02:57.17\00:02:59.01 That's pretty much, that's it. 00:02:59.04\00:03:00.74 That's pretty much it for the rest of your life. 00:03:00.78\00:03:02.54 That's the old rule, that education, 00:03:02.58\00:03:05.38 the end of education for you, 00:03:05.41\00:03:08.12 because there's no other programs out there. 00:03:08.15\00:03:10.95 One day when we got in 00:03:10.99\00:03:13.92 with the voyaging canoe from Majuro, 00:03:13.96\00:03:15.89 and my job was to sail around 00:03:15.92\00:03:17.79 and kind of educate the young people, 00:03:17.83\00:03:20.53 go around to schools and talk about voyaging canoes 00:03:20.56\00:03:22.76 and go to different communities and different youth programs. 00:03:22.80\00:03:27.14 And I was doing it all for a volunteer 00:03:27.17\00:03:30.41 just tried to get a program going. 00:03:30.44\00:03:32.84 If I can, help me out, what's a voyaging canoe? 00:03:32.87\00:03:34.81 I don't understand it. 00:03:34.84\00:03:36.18 A voyaging canoe, 00:03:36.21\00:03:37.55 it's a canoe that is 00:03:37.58\00:03:39.98 you can actually cross the ocean with. 00:03:40.02\00:03:42.82 So when we were finished with this canoe, 00:03:42.85\00:03:46.79 we sail from Wotje in to Kwajalein, 00:03:46.82\00:03:49.06 which is only about 140 miles 00:03:49.09\00:03:51.79 and then we sail from Kwajalein to Majuro 00:03:51.83\00:03:54.26 which is about 250 miles, 00:03:54.30\00:03:57.27 so that voyaging canoe was able to... 00:03:57.30\00:03:59.93 Okay. 00:03:59.97\00:04:01.30 So I take it, this one you're building it. 00:04:01.34\00:04:03.00 This is not a voyaging canoe. 00:04:03.04\00:04:04.37 No, this is a paddling canoe. 00:04:04.41\00:04:05.81 There's three sizes. 00:04:05.84\00:04:07.61 This one is called Kruger, it's a smaller paddling canoe, 00:04:07.64\00:04:11.65 one or two men canoes where people mostly used to go 00:04:11.68\00:04:15.42 bottom fishing and could do some short, 00:04:15.45\00:04:19.15 short distance sailing and mid-sized sailing canoe, 00:04:19.19\00:04:23.59 it's a sailing canoe that you can use 00:04:23.63\00:04:27.96 for further distance within the lagoon 00:04:28.00\00:04:30.17 and some time you go outside the lagoon, 00:04:30.20\00:04:32.50 but the voyaging canoe is the one 00:04:32.53\00:04:34.24 that people actually go from atoll to atoll. 00:04:34.27\00:04:37.71 This work is absolutely intricate. 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.31 This is what you learn from the elders. 00:04:40.34\00:04:42.91 This kind of canoe building. 00:04:42.94\00:04:44.28 Yes, we actually got certain wood. 00:04:44.31\00:04:48.45 We had, you know, it's, 00:04:48.48\00:04:49.82 of course you know the Marshall Islands 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.19 we don't have any wood so whatever we find, 00:04:51.22\00:04:54.52 we cut down, we cut it to good pieces 00:04:54.56\00:04:57.86 and then we sew them together. 00:04:57.89\00:04:59.23 So when you say find, 00:04:59.26\00:05:00.60 driftwood that comes in and things? 00:05:00.63\00:05:01.96 There's some driftwood. 00:05:02.00\00:05:03.33 There's some old breadfruit trees 00:05:03.37\00:05:04.70 that failed a few years ago. 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.17 So traditionally, if you say you're going to, 00:05:06.20\00:05:09.37 you're working on building a canoe, 00:05:09.40\00:05:10.94 you're actually planting a tree that maybe up to 20 years, 00:05:10.97\00:05:16.08 or even longer than your son 00:05:16.11\00:05:19.45 or your grandson will enjoy that tree. 00:05:19.48\00:05:22.38 So there was really an ecological, 00:05:22.42\00:05:24.45 ecological part to that. 00:05:24.49\00:05:26.29 Yes, it's not just building a canoe right now, 00:05:26.32\00:05:28.92 you are actually, 00:05:28.96\00:05:30.36 every, all the canoe builders have future plans, 00:05:30.39\00:05:34.30 long term plan for the communities. 00:05:34.33\00:05:36.26 And that's how they were thinking to make sure 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.50 that their community can survive. 00:05:38.53\00:05:41.07 All right. 00:05:41.10\00:05:42.44 And I notice, you build these little guys too. 00:05:42.47\00:05:44.11 What are these for? Well, these are... 00:05:44.14\00:05:46.04 That you see in the program, 00:05:46.07\00:05:48.21 we don't just teach the kids 00:05:48.24\00:05:50.65 how to build canoes, we also... 00:05:50.68\00:05:53.08 These are their wooden projects. 00:05:53.11\00:05:56.12 Also each one builds his own project. 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.45 They have partners. 00:05:58.49\00:06:00.39 They, you know, they would, you know, we'd partner them up. 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.36 Because the goal at the end is not just to make sure 00:06:03.39\00:06:06.36 that the culture, the traditions still survive, 00:06:06.39\00:06:09.23 but also to make sure 00:06:09.26\00:06:10.60 that they have some kind of skills 00:06:10.63\00:06:11.97 when they're done so they can go get a real job. 00:06:12.00\00:06:14.54 Okay. 00:06:14.57\00:06:15.90 But we have to at least give him 00:06:15.94\00:06:17.27 some skills on their hand 00:06:17.31\00:06:18.64 and information for the future journey. 00:06:18.67\00:06:20.84 So wherever they go, they'll be able to survive. 00:06:20.88\00:06:24.18 And at the end of the day, 00:06:24.21\00:06:25.65 the culture will still be instilled 00:06:25.68\00:06:27.82 in their hearts and cultural pride, 00:06:27.85\00:06:31.52 you know, this will give them something. 00:06:31.55\00:06:32.89 Now, do you also, 00:06:32.92\00:06:34.26 not only do you teach them building, 00:06:34.29\00:06:35.62 do you teach them how to canoe 00:06:35.66\00:06:37.46 and the skills of navigation or... 00:06:37.49\00:06:39.59 We do a lot of sailing with them. 00:06:39.63\00:06:42.73 As a matter of fact, Friday is our shop off. 00:06:42.76\00:06:46.74 So we close all the shops 00:06:46.77\00:06:48.37 and we also do teach English and math, 00:06:48.40\00:06:51.97 but we close everything up 00:06:52.01\00:06:53.34 and let them go swim and go sailing around. 00:06:53.38\00:06:56.34 And every once in a while, 00:06:56.38\00:06:57.71 we go crazy and get on a bigger canoe 00:06:57.75\00:07:00.18 and go across to the other atolls. 00:07:00.22\00:07:03.18 Do you have a bigger one we can look at 00:07:03.22\00:07:04.89 to kind of give me an idea what you're talking about? 00:07:04.92\00:07:06.25 Well, this is, we can take a look at this one. 00:07:06.29\00:07:09.06 But this one was actually funded 00:07:09.09\00:07:12.53 by the Department of Interior 00:07:12.56\00:07:14.23 so it's all inside this is fiberglass. 00:07:14.26\00:07:18.83 But inside here is airtight compartment 00:07:18.87\00:07:21.34 so you can cut it nav and it's still floating in. 00:07:21.37\00:07:25.27 Okay, okay. 00:07:25.31\00:07:26.81 But this one is, as you look closely, 00:07:26.84\00:07:29.38 I've started these. 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.11 These are we're repairing all this thing. 00:07:31.15\00:07:33.95 One side is a little bit rounder 00:07:33.98\00:07:35.58 than the other is called the asymmetrical shape. 00:07:35.62\00:07:39.45 So this is the same shape on an airplane wing. 00:07:39.49\00:07:43.69 Really? 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.06 So that airplane wing without the shape, 00:07:45.09\00:07:47.70 I don't think it'll fly. 00:07:47.73\00:07:49.23 But on this, it goes, as it goes faster, 00:07:49.26\00:07:53.10 it creates lift and that's what. 00:07:53.13\00:07:55.40 Pulls you up in the water 00:07:55.44\00:07:56.77 which helps you go even faster, yeah. 00:07:56.81\00:07:58.14 Yes, and also in the airplane, 00:07:58.17\00:07:59.64 same system is asymmetric shape. 00:07:59.67\00:08:03.35 And what is this, 00:08:03.38\00:08:04.78 is this particular canoe have a name 00:08:04.81\00:08:07.12 or as far as the style... 00:08:07.15\00:08:09.92 Oh, this is the walap, voyaging canoe. 00:08:09.95\00:08:13.15 A walap literally means big canoe. 00:08:13.19\00:08:16.19 Big canoe it means. 00:08:16.22\00:08:17.56 Okay. Okay. 00:08:17.59\00:08:19.63 And this has what, one sail on it or... 00:08:19.66\00:08:22.40 One sail. One sail. 00:08:22.43\00:08:23.77 So they, I think the challenging part 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.70 on these Marshallese canoes 00:08:26.74\00:08:28.60 is the chanting or the attacking 00:08:28.64\00:08:31.91 because you actually lift the sail from one end 00:08:31.94\00:08:34.21 and take it to the other. 00:08:34.24\00:08:35.58 Oh, put it to the other. Yeah. 00:08:35.61\00:08:37.51 So it is a technique on that. 00:08:37.55\00:08:40.22 You actually make sure that this, 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.78 the canoe kind of patient to the wind 00:08:42.82\00:08:45.92 and then you take the sail and... 00:08:45.95\00:08:48.82 Just when you catch that second of the doldrum. 00:08:48.86\00:08:51.33 And then that canoe actually will tell you 00:08:51.36\00:08:53.26 when to put that sail onto that side. 00:08:53.29\00:08:54.83 Okay. 00:08:54.86\00:08:56.20 How many guys are in this canoe? 00:08:56.23\00:08:57.57 Oh, you know, that canoe or this canoe, 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.93 we actually what we did we made people stand up 00:08:59.97\00:09:03.94 from one side to the other, all fill it up with people. 00:09:03.97\00:09:07.51 That isn't normal though, right? 00:09:07.54\00:09:08.88 Yeah, it's not. 00:09:08.91\00:09:10.25 And they just want to see 00:09:10.28\00:09:11.61 if it we actually went down a bit, it didn't. 00:09:11.65\00:09:13.55 You're kind of a guy 00:09:13.58\00:09:14.92 who likes to have fun, aren't you? 00:09:14.95\00:09:16.28 I can tell. 00:09:16.32\00:09:17.65 Well, you know, if you don't make work fun, 00:09:17.69\00:09:19.05 it's, is it won't last. 00:09:19.09\00:09:21.12 And, of course, 'cause we're working 00:09:21.16\00:09:23.26 with the average skills, 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.06 you have to make sure that whatever you do it's fun. 00:09:25.09\00:09:28.23 Yeah. Yeah. 00:09:28.26\00:09:29.60 Hey, you know this, 00:09:29.63\00:09:30.97 I sure appreciate your time so much so much. 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.67 It just, this gives a whole different idea to, 00:09:33.70\00:09:37.14 you know, the culture the people and everything. 00:09:37.17\00:09:39.07 So thank you so much and I wish you success 00:09:39.11\00:09:41.31 to continue to build this culture. 00:09:41.34\00:09:43.61 And you know, this, I always tell people 00:09:43.65\00:09:46.28 that you can go around the world 00:09:46.31\00:09:48.12 and you go snorkeling or diving. 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.45 Go enjoy beaches, 00:09:51.49\00:09:53.59 but their boats and their food 00:09:53.62\00:09:55.89 are what make them unique. 00:09:55.92\00:09:57.26 We've got a lot more adventure for you, so stay tuned. 00:10:02.56\00:10:05.23 We'll be right back. 00:10:05.27\00:10:09.04 As a leader in the field of health in Micronesia, 00:10:09.07\00:10:12.34 Canvasback Missions has been helping people 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.08 reverse diabetes for years. 00:10:15.11\00:10:17.81 Yes, you heard correctly, reverse diabetes. 00:10:17.85\00:10:21.98 In addition, we are helping to reduce the incident 00:10:22.02\00:10:24.79 of heart disease. 00:10:24.82\00:10:26.22 At least 34 million people in the US have diabetes. 00:10:26.25\00:10:30.46 Many have no idea they have it until it's almost too late. 00:10:30.49\00:10:34.46 Many children have diabetes. 00:10:34.50\00:10:36.73 It's time to stop it in its tracks. 00:10:36.77\00:10:39.27 What's the key? 00:10:39.30\00:10:40.64 Certain foods, exercise 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.60 and many other simple yet critical items 00:10:42.64\00:10:45.31 are combined to produce amazing results. 00:10:45.34\00:10:48.81 Log on to canvasback.org to download your own free copy, 00:10:48.84\00:10:52.88 written by renowned author Brenda Davis. 00:10:52.91\00:10:55.95 Learn from an expert in the field 00:10:55.98\00:10:57.85 how to reverse this dreaded killer. 00:10:57.89\00:10:59.99 Remember, it's completely free. 00:11:00.02\00:11:01.92 Download a copy today for yourself, 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.26 friend or loved one, 00:11:04.29\00:11:06.19 it will be life changing. 00:11:06.23\00:11:07.60 Right behind me at the moment is the wellness center. 00:11:35.16\00:11:38.33 Canvasback is associated with the hospital, again, 00:11:38.36\00:11:41.53 to work hand in glove 00:11:41.56\00:11:43.16 to bring health to the community. 00:11:43.20\00:11:45.27 Diabetes is rampant in all the islands and atolls. 00:11:45.30\00:11:49.47 And they're changing many, many lives in a way 00:11:49.50\00:11:53.54 that you just can't hardly imagine. 00:11:53.58\00:11:57.81 Kristin, how long have you been here 00:11:57.85\00:11:59.18 on the island? 00:11:59.21\00:12:00.55 This time around three years. 00:12:00.58\00:12:02.12 This time around? 00:12:02.15\00:12:03.49 There was another time? Yes. 00:12:03.52\00:12:04.85 My husband and I came in 2009 00:12:04.89\00:12:06.96 planning on staying for six months. 00:12:06.99\00:12:08.89 We ended up staying for two years. 00:12:08.92\00:12:10.59 And here you are back again. Here in the islands. 00:15:45.07\00:15:47.71 Two cases. 00:15:47.74\00:15:49.08 And now what's the... 00:15:49.11\00:15:50.45 What's the figure? 00:15:50.48\00:15:51.81 I heard your husband mentioned it's huge. 00:15:51.85\00:15:53.18 It's above 25% of the adult population. 00:15:53.21\00:15:57.52 Some estimates have put it up to 37%. 00:15:57.55\00:16:00.66 And I heard on some of the others, 00:16:00.69\00:16:02.26 perhaps it's 50-70 age, it's 75%. 00:16:02.29\00:16:08.00 There's massive numbers. 00:16:08.03\00:16:09.36 I just was reading that the other day, 00:16:09.40\00:16:10.73 it's hard to even imagine. 00:16:10.77\00:16:12.33 But that all come most of that comes from diet. 00:16:12.37\00:16:16.50 Is that correct? Oh, yes. 00:16:16.54\00:16:19.17 Diet and lack of exercise. 00:16:19.21\00:16:21.68 Now, the center here is attached to the hospital. 00:16:21.71\00:16:24.75 Tell me about that relationship? 00:16:24.78\00:16:26.61 The hospital is kind of our supervising agency. 00:16:26.65\00:16:31.05 And so we report to them. 00:16:31.09\00:16:33.12 They give us money every year to help fund our programs. 00:16:33.15\00:16:37.99 But fortunately, we have a lot of autonomy 00:16:38.03\00:16:40.53 in how we use that money. 00:16:40.56\00:16:42.50 And so makes it easy to get things done. 00:16:42.53\00:16:46.47 And I noticed you're not only making an impact 00:16:46.50\00:16:49.37 with the community, but even with the hospital, 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.64 I noticed that the hospital now is cooking here. 00:16:51.67\00:16:54.68 And you've helped change their dietary ways 00:16:54.71\00:16:57.15 they serve patients. 00:16:57.18\00:16:58.68 The hospital kitchen is being remodeled, 00:16:58.71\00:17:03.08 the hospital's 00:17:03.12\00:17:04.45 going through a big renovation process. 00:17:04.49\00:17:06.42 So they will be using our bakery 00:17:06.45\00:17:08.32 for the next three years. 00:17:08.36\00:17:10.43 And fortunately, the kitchen manager 00:17:10.46\00:17:14.20 for the hospital kitchen is also health conscious. 00:17:14.23\00:17:18.97 So the plates that go to the hospital patients 00:17:19.00\00:17:21.94 have become healthier over the last few years. 00:17:21.97\00:17:24.17 That's exciting 00:17:24.21\00:17:25.54 because hospital food normally is not very good at all. 00:17:25.57\00:17:28.88 Very true. 00:17:28.91\00:17:30.45 What else is as you've been working here 00:17:30.48\00:17:32.71 all this time now, 00:17:32.75\00:17:34.08 what are the other needs that you see 00:17:34.12\00:17:35.55 that the center is working to help with? 00:17:35.58\00:17:40.32 There is a big need for the education of children, 00:17:40.36\00:17:45.49 school aged children 00:17:45.53\00:17:47.60 who really don't know anything about healthy eating. 00:17:47.63\00:17:51.20 And they have a soda pop for breakfast. 00:17:51.23\00:17:55.84 And they'll have an ice cream cone 00:17:55.87\00:17:57.21 on the way to school, 00:17:57.24\00:17:58.74 or their only breakfast will be a pack of chips. 00:17:58.77\00:18:03.08 So we are working 00:18:03.11\00:18:05.15 with the Ministry of Education 00:18:05.18\00:18:07.22 and developing health curriculum 00:18:07.25\00:18:09.52 using their standards, 00:18:09.55\00:18:11.32 which they have some pretty good standards, 00:18:11.35\00:18:12.95 they just don't have anything in place 00:18:12.99\00:18:14.52 for the teachers to use, to teach those standards. 00:18:14.56\00:18:18.56 So we have developed a kindergarten 00:18:18.59\00:18:20.80 and first grade workbook with 21 lessons, 00:18:20.83\00:18:26.80 activities on the importance of exercise 00:18:26.84\00:18:29.04 on healthy food and unhealthy food. 00:18:29.07\00:18:32.81 The kindergartens this last year, 00:18:32.84\00:18:35.08 it was their first year 00:18:35.11\00:18:36.58 and kindergarteners stopped drinking 00:18:36.61\00:18:39.71 so much soda and juice. 00:18:39.75\00:18:42.45 And a lot of the teachers had a rule 00:18:42.48\00:18:45.29 of no junk food in the classroom. 00:18:45.32\00:18:47.76 So instead of chips and cookies for snacks, 00:18:47.79\00:18:50.93 they were bringing fruit and boiled eggs 00:18:50.96\00:18:54.56 and natural stuff. 00:18:54.60\00:18:57.60 So the wellness center is making an impact 00:18:57.63\00:18:59.33 starting to move out through the whole community. 00:18:59.37\00:19:01.47 Yes, it's another of our programs, 00:19:01.50\00:19:03.37 the CHAT program where patients get visited 00:19:03.41\00:19:05.94 in their homes. 00:19:05.97\00:19:07.31 The idea is to teach the whole family at once 00:19:07.34\00:19:09.88 and things like that. 00:19:09.91\00:19:11.25 You mentioned the CHAT program a little earlier 00:19:11.28\00:19:13.88 of helping to go in and help the people. 00:19:13.92\00:19:16.52 Is that an acronym for something? 00:19:16.55\00:19:18.25 Yes. 00:19:18.29\00:19:19.62 Community Health Advancement Program. 00:19:19.65\00:19:21.66 I imagine that you've gotten some really great stories. 00:19:21.69\00:19:26.09 I've seen people's lives change. 00:19:26.13\00:19:28.33 Is there one or two that are just really pop 00:19:28.36\00:19:30.30 that you'd like to share with us? 00:19:30.33\00:19:32.10 Sure. 00:19:32.13\00:19:33.47 Anne went through our program three times 00:19:33.50\00:19:36.67 because she wanted to just keep learning 00:19:36.71\00:19:39.61 more and more and more. 00:19:39.64\00:19:40.98 Her father had gone through the program years ago 00:19:41.01\00:19:43.55 and encouraged her to come 00:19:43.58\00:19:44.91 and she just has so much more energy now 00:19:44.95\00:19:47.45 that she's trying to eat right and exercise. 00:19:47.48\00:19:50.92 And she started walking club. 00:19:50.95\00:19:53.15 She does our exercise classes when we do our outreaches, 00:19:53.19\00:19:59.19 so she's a great motivator for the Marshallese 00:19:59.23\00:20:03.10 who think that they can't do it, 00:20:03.13\00:20:05.17 but they can. 00:20:05.20\00:20:06.53 They can. 00:20:06.57\00:20:07.90 So it's really true. You are what you eat. 00:20:07.94\00:20:10.21 You are. 00:20:10.24\00:20:11.57 Oh definitely. 00:20:11.61\00:20:13.54 The things that you put in your body affect your mind, 00:20:13.58\00:20:19.08 affect your well-being, 00:20:19.11\00:20:21.62 does affect your even your spiritual connection. 00:20:21.65\00:20:27.12 I'm going to stop you a moment, even your spiritual connection. 00:20:27.16\00:20:29.72 Can you expand on that? 00:20:29.76\00:20:31.76 Your connection to God is through your mind. 00:20:31.79\00:20:34.36 If you do not have a clear mind, 00:20:34.40\00:20:36.33 you can't have a good connection with God. 00:20:36.36\00:20:38.83 And the healthier the food that you eat, 00:20:38.87\00:20:41.57 the clearer your mind is also, it doesn't. 00:20:41.60\00:20:44.47 It's not only the food, you have to drink your water 00:20:44.51\00:20:47.34 and you have to get some exercise every day 00:20:47.38\00:20:49.84 and get some sunshine 00:20:49.88\00:20:51.21 and avoid alcohol and tobacco 00:20:51.25\00:20:53.25 and other things that cloud your mind. 00:20:53.28\00:20:55.52 But all of these things affect your spirit, 00:20:55.55\00:20:58.45 and your spirit affects your body. 00:20:58.49\00:21:00.62 So this is what Canvasback Wellness Center's 00:21:00.66\00:21:02.79 really doing 00:21:02.82\00:21:04.16 is helping to change the mind of the people 00:21:04.19\00:21:06.19 and help them feel better. 00:21:06.23\00:21:07.60 then they can focus on spiritual things. 00:21:07.63\00:21:09.80 Yes, you need those basics in place 00:21:09.83\00:21:13.27 before you can tackle the higher things. 00:21:13.30\00:21:17.07 So if you had a wish list of things you'd like to do, 00:21:17.11\00:21:19.91 maybe expansion or something, what kind of, would that be? 00:21:19.94\00:21:23.24 How would it look like? Wow. 00:21:23.28\00:21:25.01 Well, here, at this wellness center, 00:21:25.05\00:21:27.88 I would love to have a few more exercise classes, 00:21:27.92\00:21:31.95 have maybe a program 00:21:31.99\00:21:34.19 through the schools 00:21:34.22\00:21:35.56 where we cook with each classroom 00:21:35.59\00:21:37.13 and get them to try healthy food. 00:21:37.16\00:21:40.46 It would take a bit more staff and money. 00:21:40.50\00:21:45.17 And we'd really like to expand. 00:21:45.20\00:21:47.80 There are other islands who have expressed an interest 00:21:47.84\00:21:52.07 in having a wellness center. 00:21:52.11\00:21:53.68 So it would be great to be able to start up 00:21:53.71\00:21:55.78 another wellness center on another island 00:21:55.81\00:21:57.45 because the Pacific Islands all have the same problem 00:21:57.48\00:21:59.95 with diabetes and chronic illness. 00:21:59.98\00:22:02.55 I guess in reality Canvasback has been invited, 00:22:02.58\00:22:05.32 but it takes as you just said money to do that. 00:22:05.35\00:22:08.36 Yes. Staff and time. 00:22:08.39\00:22:09.72 Yes. 00:22:09.76\00:22:11.09 And we want to leave the wellness center 00:22:11.13\00:22:13.29 here in Majuro very stable with some local management 00:22:13.33\00:22:18.40 that can keep the ball rolling. 00:22:18.43\00:22:22.37 Kirstin, thank you so much. 00:22:22.40\00:22:24.01 Appreciate all the service you do 00:22:24.04\00:22:25.57 and outreach and everything else. 00:22:25.61\00:22:27.64 Thank you, Jim. 00:22:27.68\00:22:29.54 There is so much more on impact to come, stay tuned. 00:22:29.58\00:22:32.68 According to the World Health Organization, 00:22:36.69\00:22:39.15 depression is the leading cause of worldwide disability 00:22:39.19\00:22:43.12 that happens to a lot of people. 00:22:43.16\00:22:45.29 Are you depressed? 00:22:45.33\00:22:46.73 Have you become discouraged lately? 00:22:46.76\00:22:48.86 The list is endless of things 00:22:48.90\00:22:50.23 that can trigger discouragement, 00:22:50.27\00:22:51.83 despair, or even depression. 00:22:51.87\00:22:54.27 If you are someone you know is experiencing 00:22:54.30\00:22:56.14 one or more of these difficulties, 00:22:56.17\00:22:58.27 we have a great little booklet for you. 00:22:58.31\00:23:00.48 It's written by author 00:23:00.51\00:23:01.84 and international speaker Jim Ayer. 00:23:01.88\00:23:04.15 Overcoming the 3Ds contains timely advice 00:23:04.18\00:23:07.25 set in a lighthearted manner, 00:23:07.28\00:23:08.95 meant to help lift you up and out of your problems. 00:23:08.98\00:23:12.15 Understand, we all have problems, 00:23:12.19\00:23:14.32 trials and troubles, 00:23:14.36\00:23:15.69 but we don't need to focus on them. 00:23:15.72\00:23:18.53 You can obtain your copy right now 00:23:18.56\00:23:20.26 by going to canvasback.org. 00:23:20.30\00:23:22.46 And for a gift of any amount, that's for any gift amount, 00:23:22.50\00:23:26.13 you will receive your copy of Overcoming the 3Ds. 00:23:26.17\00:23:29.94 Get your copy today. 00:23:29.97\00:23:31.31 I look at that symbol 00:23:36.14\00:23:37.48 and I think about a different symbol, 00:23:37.51\00:23:39.35 one in a desert from a long time ago. 00:23:39.38\00:23:42.28 And God was leading the children of Israel 00:23:42.32\00:23:44.32 through the desert to the Promised Land. 00:23:44.35\00:23:47.26 But they began complaining, they didn't like the food. 00:23:47.29\00:23:50.06 They didn't like this. They didn't like that. 00:23:50.09\00:23:52.39 And the Bible records that they complained 00:23:52.43\00:23:55.16 because of the way, the way God was leading them. 00:23:55.20\00:23:58.40 They didn't like the way God was leading them. 00:23:58.43\00:24:01.60 So the Lord said, "Okay, I will just back away, 00:24:01.64\00:24:05.51 I will let everything happen to you 00:24:05.54\00:24:07.44 in a natural consequences of nature." 00:24:07.48\00:24:11.21 And as he backed away all of a sudden, 00:24:11.25\00:24:13.78 which was the norm in this desert, 00:24:13.82\00:24:15.72 there were fiery serpents that came everywhere. 00:24:15.75\00:24:18.79 They began finding the people, 00:24:18.82\00:24:20.16 began biting the people 00:24:20.19\00:24:21.52 and soon people were dying continually everywhere. 00:24:21.56\00:24:24.73 And the death was painful. 00:24:24.76\00:24:26.59 It was absolutely painful. 00:24:26.63\00:24:29.60 And finally they're saying, "Moses, save us, 00:24:29.63\00:24:31.97 talk to God again. 00:24:32.00\00:24:33.34 Please we have sinned, talk to God." 00:24:33.37\00:24:35.50 Moses prayed to God. 00:24:35.54\00:24:37.17 God said, "Okay Moses, build, 00:24:37.21\00:24:39.17 take a pole and build a brazen serpent 00:24:39.21\00:24:42.24 out a brass. 00:24:42.28\00:24:43.61 And brazen is brass. 00:24:43.65\00:24:44.98 Build this serpent, 00:24:45.01\00:24:46.35 hang it on a pole and when the people look at it, 00:24:46.38\00:24:49.28 they'll be healed. 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.09 Didn't seem like it made much sense 00:24:52.12\00:24:53.86 to anyone except Moses 00:24:53.89\00:24:55.29 because Moses always followed the direction of God. 00:24:55.32\00:24:58.69 He built that serpent, 00:24:58.73\00:25:00.16 hung it on a pole 00:25:00.20\00:25:01.86 and he commanded and the people said, 00:25:01.90\00:25:03.23 "Look at it and you will live." 00:25:03.26\00:25:05.27 Now some of the people, 00:25:05.30\00:25:06.63 they thought, "It can't help me, 00:25:06.67\00:25:08.67 I'm not going to look at it." 00:25:08.70\00:25:11.04 And they laid right there. 00:25:11.07\00:25:12.54 And without turning their heads, they died. 00:25:12.57\00:25:15.94 Other people were so weak, 00:25:15.98\00:25:17.45 they couldn't look and friends help them, 00:25:17.48\00:25:19.41 said, "Please help me" 00:25:19.45\00:25:20.78 and friends help them to turn and look and live. 00:25:20.82\00:25:24.75 Others still immediately believe 00:25:24.79\00:25:26.86 and they look and they lived. 00:25:26.89\00:25:29.52 You'll see this represented Jesus Christ. 00:25:29.56\00:25:32.23 He took sin for us. 00:25:32.26\00:25:34.63 He took that bite of the serpent, 00:25:34.66\00:25:36.36 that fiery serpent for us. 00:25:36.40\00:25:39.20 He hung on a cross, 00:25:39.23\00:25:40.67 and all we need to do is look and live. 00:25:40.70\00:25:45.17 Some people no longer even have sight. 00:25:45.21\00:25:48.11 But Canvasback is helping those people to look to 00:25:48.14\00:25:50.95 and live a better life right now 00:25:50.98\00:25:52.75 that they might see for eternity. 00:25:52.78\00:25:54.38 Not only does Canvasback specialize 00:26:03.22\00:26:05.73 in medical and dental teams 00:26:05.76\00:26:07.33 to help those in great need of healing, 00:26:07.36\00:26:10.40 but we also work to reverse 00:26:10.43\00:26:12.43 the epidemic of diabetes among the population. 00:26:12.47\00:26:16.47 It's the number one killer in the Marshall Islands. 00:26:16.50\00:26:20.54 We are utilizing every means at our disposal 00:26:20.58\00:26:24.41 to combat this deadly disease. 00:26:24.45\00:26:27.35 We are working to lead people back to a healthy diet, 00:26:27.38\00:26:30.99 free from so many foods 00:26:31.02\00:26:33.19 that are major players in diabetes 00:26:33.22\00:26:35.22 and heart disease. 00:26:35.26\00:26:37.19 We are training and sending out neighborhood teams 00:26:37.23\00:26:40.60 to detect health problems early 00:26:40.63\00:26:43.33 and then offer them solutions that work. 00:26:43.37\00:26:46.30 We're making tremendous progress, 00:26:46.33\00:26:48.60 but your help is needed. 00:26:48.64\00:26:50.87 The program has been highly successful, 00:26:50.91\00:26:53.58 but we must expand and that takes money. 00:26:53.61\00:26:57.21 The needs are great, but the solutions are simple. 00:26:57.25\00:27:01.05 Early detection and teaching with love 00:27:01.08\00:27:04.35 the basic principles of health 00:27:04.39\00:27:06.55 that move people toward a healthy lifestyle. 00:27:06.59\00:27:09.92 I do hope you will financially join us 00:27:09.96\00:27:13.53 in helping to eradicate diabetes, 00:27:13.56\00:27:16.30 the number one killer in the Marshall Islands
