I put it up. 00:08:35.04\00:08:36.38 And I just separate it... 00:08:36.41\00:08:39.55 Okay. Yeah. 00:08:39.58\00:08:41.22 So this is our OR schedule board. 00:08:41.25\00:08:44.29 And it represents actually only four days of clinic 00:08:44.32\00:08:47.39 that we had. 00:08:47.42\00:08:49.99 We conduct clinic on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. 00:08:50.03\00:08:52.53 So this represents about, 00:08:52.56\00:08:56.90 I would say about 80 surgeries 00:08:56.93\00:08:59.43 that have been completed or will be completed 00:08:59.47\00:09:03.44 by the time the trip is over. 00:09:03.47\00:09:04.94 And we still have today, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 00:09:04.97\00:09:09.68 to do screenings for patients. 00:09:09.71\00:09:12.65 So we may probably fill up the rest of this. 00:09:12.68\00:09:15.58 Typically, Jackie, how many surgeries 00:09:15.62\00:09:18.05 would you do on a trip? 00:09:18.09\00:09:19.42 Typically, we would do about 200 surgeries. 00:09:19.45\00:09:22.12 So this represents about half of that. 00:09:22.16\00:09:25.59 And you also get cut a day short 00:09:25.63\00:09:27.26 because your plane had to... 00:09:27.30\00:09:28.63 Oh, yeah! 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.10 We were halfway to Majuro 00:09:30.13\00:09:32.63 and we had to turn around and go back to Honolulu 00:09:32.67\00:09:35.90 because the patient got ill on the plane 00:09:35.94\00:09:38.67 and our Canvasback doctors 00:09:38.71\00:09:40.04 actually helped that patient out. 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.98 So, yeah, we lost a day. 00:09:43.01\00:09:44.95 But what the team did, 00:09:44.98\00:09:47.45 we were supposed to have a day off when we got here. 00:09:47.48\00:09:50.09 But instead we got here on Sunday we ate 00:09:50.12\00:09:52.75 and came in work till about 9 o'clock 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.46 unpacking everything so we could start up on Monday. 00:09:54.49\00:09:57.43 And then you got 200 surgeries 00:09:57.46\00:09:59.06 but that you see in a lot more patients 00:09:59.09\00:10:00.90 than that then too, to get that 200 surgeries? 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.26 Yeah, Shery, how many patients have we seen? 00:10:02.30\00:10:05.20 We don't have 200 surgeries, we've seen... 00:10:05.23\00:10:08.27 Normally though. Yeah. 00:10:08.30\00:10:09.64 Oh. 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.01 Oh yeah, we will have by the end of the day. 00:10:11.04\00:10:12.37 Yeah. 00:10:12.41\00:10:13.74 So far we've seen as of 5 o'clock last night, 00:10:13.78\00:10:17.21 we had seen 124 patients, we've done 32 surgeries, 00:10:17.25\00:10:23.39 and including those 32, we scheduled 77 surgeries. 00:10:23.42\00:10:28.06 Okay. 00:10:28.09\00:10:29.42 And some of those people, you end up doing one eye, 00:10:29.46\00:10:32.63 and then they come back and you do another eye. 00:10:32.66\00:10:34.70 That's right. 00:10:34.73\00:10:36.06 And now that you've got a retinal specialist on, 00:10:36.10\00:10:38.27 all of a sudden, you've done retinal surgery, 00:10:38.30\00:10:40.17 that's maybe never happened in the whole Marshall Island. 00:10:40.20\00:10:41.97 Oh, not happened all through Micronesia. 00:10:42.00\00:10:45.37 There's only one retractor in all of Micronesia 00:10:45.41\00:10:48.68 that belongs to Canvasback, 00:10:48.71\00:10:50.25 and we brought that, and a retinal specialist. 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.78 And this is his position is so needed in the islands. 00:10:52.81\00:10:56.42 And, yeah. 00:10:56.45\00:11:00.29 His position is really needed in the islands 00:11:00.32\00:11:02.56 because no one is here 00:11:02.59\00:11:06.73 to treat these retinal patients at all. 00:11:06.76\00:11:10.13 And I had Dr. Rick walk me through yesterday. 00:11:10.17\00:11:12.50 And he took me back into the back 00:11:12.53\00:11:14.27 where all the shipping containers are 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.60 and then he took me to where all the doctors' wheel 00:11:16.64\00:11:18.57 and all the extra luggage that they bring on board. 00:11:18.61\00:11:21.54 But you take months 00:11:21.58\00:11:23.68 ahead of schedule planning all that. 00:11:23.71\00:11:25.05 Can you walk me 00:11:25.08\00:11:26.41 through this whole process of... 00:11:26.45\00:11:27.78 It takes about a year 00:11:27.82\00:11:29.15 to really pull together a great team. 00:11:29.18\00:11:31.85 Because we have to recruit the team members, 00:11:31.89\00:11:34.09 then we have to solicit the donations, 00:11:34.12\00:11:36.02 we have to schedule the surgery, a whole thing. 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.56 So it's about a year. 00:11:38.59\00:11:40.50 And then we have to get all the supplies in 00:11:40.53\00:11:43.10 and for ophthalmology, 00:11:43.13\00:11:45.17 it was about eight crates, I think. 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.74 It was eight crates. 00:11:48.77\00:11:50.51 That includes the equipment... 00:11:50.54\00:11:51.91 Now, sorry, if I can interrupt you 00:11:51.94\00:11:53.27 just for a second. 00:11:53.31\00:11:54.64 So Canvasback has a warehouse in Benicia. 00:11:54.68\00:11:56.95 That's right. 00:11:56.98\00:11:58.31 Where you begin staging all of that. 00:11:58.35\00:11:59.71 That's right. That's right. 00:11:59.75\00:12:01.08 It gets broiled 00:12:01.12\00:12:02.45 because we have a lot of stuff come in, 00:12:02.48\00:12:04.25 not only is it the equipment 00:12:04.29\00:12:07.72 that we know we're going to need 00:12:07.76\00:12:09.09 for the teams and the supplies. 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.13 But, you know, we're in constant contact 00:12:11.16\00:12:12.99 with the local doctor here. 00:12:13.03\00:12:15.20 We say, "Well, what do you need? 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.00 Is there equipment that's broken? 00:12:17.03\00:12:18.73 Is there something that we can help?" 00:12:18.77\00:12:20.40 And indeed, the team brought in an A-scan, B-scan, 00:12:20.44\00:12:24.64 we brought in various items. 00:12:24.67\00:12:27.21 Backup, A-scan, B-scan. 00:12:27.24\00:12:29.44 It's for testing of the health of the eye, 00:12:29.48\00:12:33.85 so we brought in a machine to donate to him. 00:12:33.88\00:12:37.19 We knew that he needed tables that move up and down 00:12:37.22\00:12:40.32 and makes it easier for the doctor. 00:12:40.36\00:12:42.29 We were able to don't get that donated. 00:12:42.32\00:12:45.09 I noticed, the surgery tables are all massage tables. 00:12:45.13\00:12:48.46 That's right. 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.20 Okay. 00:12:50.23\00:12:51.57 We sent in the massage tables 00:12:51.60\00:12:52.93 because that's easier to position our presentation. 00:12:52.97\00:12:56.07 And we'll leave that for Dr. Gal. 00:12:56.10\00:12:57.74 Okay. 00:12:57.77\00:12:59.11 So not only do you bring in a team, 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.61 but you leave a lot of additional equipment 00:13:01.64\00:13:03.24 that hospitals never have. 00:13:03.28\00:13:04.61 Right. And supplies. 00:13:04.65\00:13:06.28 The word to all of our teams 00:13:06.31\00:13:08.68 are you must bring in every single item 00:13:08.72\00:13:11.49 you need for in mission and then extra 00:13:11.52\00:13:14.62 because we don't want to deplete 00:13:14.66\00:13:16.16 any of the supplies that they have. 00:13:16.19\00:13:17.96 Okay. 00:13:17.99\00:13:19.33 One patient I was talking to was telling me 00:13:19.36\00:13:21.33 that the average person here maybe makes $30 to $50 a month. 00:13:21.36\00:13:25.63 Now you get a specialist in here who is doing, 00:13:25.67\00:13:28.07 say retinal surgery. 00:13:28.10\00:13:29.80 In the United States, 00:13:29.84\00:13:31.17 you're probably looking at $12,000 surgery 00:13:31.21\00:13:33.94 but because of Canvasback and all you've done 00:13:33.98\00:13:36.31 Jack and the team, it's free. 00:13:36.34\00:13:38.65 That's right. That's right. 00:13:38.68\00:13:40.18 They would never have gone off island 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.98 for that they couldn't afford to be able to do that. 00:13:43.02\00:13:45.45 And you know what's really special 00:13:45.49\00:13:46.92 is these people who've come in here 00:13:46.96\00:13:48.72 who are blind, you know, they have lost quality of life. 00:13:48.76\00:13:54.00 But so as their family members, 00:13:54.03\00:13:55.80 their family members have had to feed them, 00:13:55.83\00:13:57.60 have had to lead them around, 00:13:57.63\00:13:58.97 have had to take care of them. 00:13:59.00\00:14:00.54 And we are able to set them free to, 00:14:00.57\00:14:04.24 they're able to go back to living a healthy life too. 00:14:04.27\00:14:09.04 Now before we... 00:14:09.08\00:14:10.41 So people don't just think, 00:14:10.45\00:14:11.78 I mean, we are here at an eye clinic now, 00:14:11.81\00:14:13.95 but Canvasback does so much more. 00:14:13.98\00:14:16.62 You've got how many other types of specialties do you get into? 00:14:16.65\00:14:20.39 Well, we do orthopedic surgery, 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.92 we do ENT, gynecology, urology, 00:14:22.96\00:14:28.80 so many different kinds. 00:14:28.83\00:14:30.57 And same thing with a person 00:14:30.60\00:14:33.23 who's been in a wheelchair for years 00:14:33.27\00:14:36.24 because they couldn't get around 00:14:36.27\00:14:37.61 they needed a new knee or their hip was broken. 00:14:37.64\00:14:40.54 I've seen patients who've waited two years 00:14:40.58\00:14:42.64 to have their knee repair. 00:14:42.68\00:14:44.01 Tell me one of your favorite stories, 00:14:44.05\00:14:45.98 which just pops off the top of your head. 00:14:46.01\00:14:47.35 I'm sure you've got some of those. 00:14:47.38\00:14:48.72 Oh, I do have a favorite story. 00:14:48.75\00:14:50.49 I have a favorite story of a blind man 00:14:50.52\00:14:52.55 who is blind in both eyes and he came to the clinic. 00:14:52.59\00:14:55.96 And we were excited. 00:14:55.99\00:14:58.73 We did one eye. 00:14:58.76\00:15:01.00 And the next day when he came and we took off his patch, 00:15:01.03\00:15:03.80 we expected him to go, 00:15:03.83\00:15:05.17 "Praise the Lord, I can see again" 00:15:05.20\00:15:07.10 He did nothing. 00:15:07.14\00:15:08.47 That was really depressing for us, you know. 00:15:08.50\00:15:10.17 But we thought, well, 00:15:10.21\00:15:11.54 he's been blind for this many years, 00:15:11.57\00:15:14.44 maybe, you know, something has gone wrong here. 00:15:14.48\00:15:17.15 So we decided to do his second eye. 00:15:17.18\00:15:20.28 Did the second eye, 00:15:20.32\00:15:21.85 and the next day he came back still no response 00:15:21.88\00:15:24.79 when we took the patch off. 00:15:24.82\00:15:26.72 Really broke our hearts, 00:15:26.76\00:15:28.32 but we put him out in the hallway. 00:15:28.36\00:15:30.76 And he was sitting in the hallway. 00:15:30.79\00:15:32.63 And pretty soon a very pretty Marshallese nurse 00:15:32.66\00:15:35.46 walked by. 00:15:35.50\00:15:36.83 And his head popped up. 00:15:36.87\00:15:40.24 And he patted her on the back and he went, 00:15:40.27\00:15:42.77 "Where have you been?" 00:15:42.80\00:15:47.31 That broke up the whole staff. 00:15:47.34\00:15:48.68 It did. They wanted a healing here. 00:17:47.20\00:17:49.13 They wanted something from Him. 00:17:49.16\00:17:51.23 But very few wanted a real friendship with Him. 00:17:51.27\00:17:54.30 There was Martha and Mary and Lazarus, however, 00:17:54.34\00:17:57.54 they wanted a friendship. 00:17:57.57\00:17:58.97 They invited Jesus to their home. 00:17:59.01\00:18:01.08 They spent time with Him. 00:18:01.11\00:18:02.61 It was a place that He could relax 00:18:02.64\00:18:04.48 and simply just get rid of the cares 00:18:04.51\00:18:07.68 of the day. 00:18:07.72\00:18:09.68 He was traveling with His disciples, 00:18:09.72\00:18:12.12 and Lazarus became very sick. 00:18:12.15\00:18:15.56 Mary sent a runner, someone to find Jesus and say, 00:18:15.59\00:18:18.89 "The one you love is sick." 00:18:18.93\00:18:21.86 He got the message, 00:18:21.90\00:18:23.23 and the disciples thought He would just immediately, 00:18:23.26\00:18:25.33 you know, kind of pull up camp and head back but He didn't. 00:18:25.37\00:18:28.54 He lingered day after day. 00:18:28.57\00:18:30.87 And finally, He said, "Okay, it's time." 00:18:30.91\00:18:34.81 Lazarus is sleeping now. 00:18:34.84\00:18:36.31 They thought, "Well, if Lazarus is sleeping, 00:18:36.34\00:18:38.61 you know, the fever has passed, 00:18:38.65\00:18:39.98 he's feeling very good." 00:18:40.02\00:18:41.65 No, no. 00:18:41.68\00:18:43.08 Basically, what Jesus is saying is Lazarus is dead. 00:18:43.12\00:18:45.82 You see, Jesus equates sleep and death 00:18:45.85\00:18:48.86 as the same 00:18:48.89\00:18:50.23 because when we die, we don't go to heaven, 00:18:50.26\00:18:51.59 we don't go anyplace. 00:18:51.63\00:18:52.96 We simply go to sleep and wait for the resurrection. 00:18:52.99\00:18:57.07 Jesus finally got very close to Mary's home. 00:18:57.10\00:19:01.87 And she was waiting. 00:19:01.90\00:19:03.54 She'd been waiting for days. 00:19:03.57\00:19:04.91 You see, four days now had passed. 00:19:04.94\00:19:07.61 And there was Jesus. 00:19:07.64\00:19:09.84 "Lord, it's too late. He's already died." 00:19:09.88\00:19:13.38 "Do you believe, Mary? Do you believe?" 00:19:13.42\00:19:16.38 "Well, yes, Lord. 00:19:16.42\00:19:17.75 I believe that there'll be a resurrection." 00:19:17.79\00:19:19.49 "Oh, do you believe, Mary?" 00:19:19.52\00:19:21.86 "Yes, Lord, I believe in You." 00:19:21.89\00:19:24.43 And they started to head toward the tomb. 00:19:24.46\00:19:27.23 Now Mary had sent word to the Jesus 00:19:27.26\00:19:30.10 was coming to Martha, her sister. 00:19:30.13\00:19:32.87 Martha jumped up 00:19:32.90\00:19:34.24 when she heard the news and she ran out 00:19:34.27\00:19:35.67 and all the professional mourners 00:19:35.70\00:19:37.54 and everybody there thought, 00:19:37.57\00:19:39.04 "Oh, she's going to the tomb." 00:19:39.07\00:19:41.24 Well, she was running to meet Jesus. 00:19:41.28\00:19:44.45 By the time they actually got there, 00:19:44.48\00:19:46.01 Jesus was at the tomb. 00:19:46.05\00:19:48.38 And as He's standing there at the tomb, 00:19:48.42\00:19:50.79 they're saying, "Lord, He's been dead, four days!" 00:19:50.82\00:19:53.82 Yeah, basically he's stinky. 00:19:53.86\00:19:57.29 "You know why Lord, 00:19:57.33\00:19:58.79 would you even want to be here now?" 00:19:58.83\00:20:00.53 And He asked the men to roll away the stone 00:20:00.56\00:20:03.03 of the tomb. 00:20:03.06\00:20:04.40 He could have done it Himself. 00:20:04.43\00:20:05.77 He could have flicked His finger 00:20:05.80\00:20:07.14 and rolled the stone away. 00:20:07.17\00:20:08.50 But He cooperates with humanity also. 00:20:08.54\00:20:10.84 They rolled the stone away. 00:20:10.87\00:20:12.77 And now He stands there. 00:20:12.81\00:20:14.14 He has a prayer to His father. 00:20:14.18\00:20:15.71 And He says, "Lazarus come forth." 00:20:15.74\00:20:19.08 And you could hear a pin drop 00:20:19.11\00:20:21.85 amongst all these people in this desert scene. 00:20:21.88\00:20:26.09 And they here rustling in the tomb. 00:20:26.12\00:20:28.32 Then all of a sudden, out of this tomb, 00:20:28.36\00:20:30.79 here comes Lazarus hopping. 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.26 He's wrapped in grave cloth. 00:20:32.29\00:20:34.03 He's got cloth over his face, he can't see, 00:20:34.06\00:20:36.93 but he's out of the tomb. 00:20:36.97\00:20:38.77 Everybody is standing around in amazement, saying, 00:20:38.80\00:20:41.24 "What's going on?" 00:20:41.27\00:20:42.97 Jesus says, "Has to tell somebody, 00:20:43.00\00:20:45.31 unwrap him. 00:20:45.34\00:20:46.68 Take the cloths off, take the wrappings off." 00:20:46.71\00:20:49.94 And Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead. 00:20:49.98\00:20:54.12 Now it's interesting 00:20:54.15\00:20:55.75 because every recorded funeral 00:20:55.78\00:20:57.85 of the Bible that Jesus attended, 00:20:57.89\00:20:59.99 He broke up the funeral by raising the dead. 00:21:00.02\00:21:02.96 He is the Creator God. 00:21:02.99\00:21:04.56 He came down here to Planet Earth 00:21:04.59\00:21:06.16 to sheriff Himself 00:21:06.19\00:21:07.53 to show His personality who He really is. 00:21:07.56\00:21:10.60 He loves us and if we fall asleep in Jesus, 00:21:10.63\00:21:14.97 He wants to resurrect us at that final day 00:21:15.00\00:21:17.57 and take us to eternity with Him. 00:21:17.61\00:21:19.64 But here's the key. 00:21:19.67\00:21:21.21 Now's the time to have a friendship 00:21:21.24\00:21:23.45 and relationship with Him, 00:21:23.48\00:21:24.85 now is the time to get to know Him 00:21:24.88\00:21:27.05 as your very best friend. 00:21:27.08\00:21:28.58 That's what He's looking forward to. 00:21:28.62\00:21:30.55 Will you be today, 00:21:30.59\00:21:31.95 will you be His very best friend?
