Shall we bow our heads for prayer. Father in heaven, we 00:01:13.70\00:01:17.34 thank you for the awesome privilege of coming into your 00:01:17.37\00:01:20.91 presence to open your holy word. We ask that as we study about 00:01:20.94\00:01:25.78 the priesthood of Melchizedek that your Holy Spirit will be 00:01:25.81\00:01:30.02 with us to instruct us. We ask that you will give us divine 00:01:30.05\00:01:34.29 wisdom so that we might learn the lessons which will be useful 00:01:34.32\00:01:38.49 in our personal daily walk with Jesus and we thank you for 00:01:38.53\00:01:43.53 hearing our prayer for we ask it in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:01:43.57\00:01:48.57 In the Bible there is perhaps no more mysterious figure than an 00:01:48.60\00:01:54.68 individual called Melchizedek. He's an individual who is 00:01:54.71\00:01:58.98 mentioned in Genesis chapter 14. Throughout the course of 00:01:59.01\00:02:03.12 Christian history there have been different views about the 00:02:03.15\00:02:07.22 identity of Melchizedek. Some people have felt that 00:02:07.26\00:02:11.89 Melchizedek is actually another name for Michael the archangel. 00:02:11.93\00:02:16.80 Others actually believe that Melchizedek was another name 00:02:16.83\00:02:22.54 for Shem the son of Noah. Still others have believed that 00:02:22.57\00:02:28.18 Melchizedek is really a name for Christ in his preincarnate state 00:02:28.21\00:02:34.05 and still others have believed that Melchizedek is actually a 00:02:34.08\00:02:39.59 manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Now I want 00:02:39.62\00:02:44.16 to tell you as we begin that I don't believe that any of these 00:02:44.19\00:02:49.26 views is correct. I believe that Melchizedek was actually a 00:02:49.30\00:02:54.24 historical figure who comes on the scene and disappears from 00:02:54.27\00:02:59.14 the scene very quickly. Actually I would like to begin by reading 00:02:59.17\00:03:04.21 a statement, a very important statement, that we find in the 00:03:04.25\00:03:09.52 Review and Herald, February 18 of the year 1890. This is 00:03:09.55\00:03:14.76 written by Ellen White. She says this about Melchizedek: It was 00:03:14.79\00:03:21.60 Christ that spoke through Melchizedek, the priest of the 00:03:21.63\00:03:28.30 most high God. Melchizedek was not Christ, but he was the voice 00:03:28.34\00:03:35.08 of God in the world and the representative of the Father. 00:03:35.11\00:03:39.61 And all through the generations of the past Christ has spoken, 00:03:39.65\00:03:46.05 Christ has led his people and has been the light of the world. 00:03:46.09\00:03:51.39 And so we find very clearly in this statement that Melchizedek 00:03:51.43\00:03:56.80 was not Christ. Melchizedek was actually a representative of 00:03:56.83\00:04:01.97 Christ. And we want to study about that representative of 00:04:02.00\00:04:07.08 Christ as the story is found recorded in Genesis chapter 14 00:04:07.11\00:04:12.11 and verses 18-20. In fact, let's begin our study by reading those 00:04:12.15\00:04:18.32 verses. Genesis chapter 14 and verses 18-20. We find these 00:04:18.35\00:04:26.36 words... 00:04:26.39\00:05:03.06 Now in order to understand this passage, we must look at the 00:05:03.10\00:05:07.67 story that comes immediately before it. You probably remember 00:05:07.70\00:05:12.81 the story of how Lot and many of the men of Sodom were actually 00:05:12.84\00:05:17.65 taken hostage by this group of kings from Canaan. Actually it 00:05:17.68\00:05:22.18 was a coalition of many kings that got together. They came to 00:05:22.22\00:05:26.62 Sodom. They took Lot and many of the men from Sodom and of 00:05:26.65\00:05:31.03 course they took all of the loot or all of the riches of Sodom as 00:05:31.06\00:05:35.93 well. When Abraham heard that Lot and the men of Sodom and the 00:05:35.96\00:05:40.84 riches of Sodom had been taken by this coalition of kings from 00:05:40.87\00:05:45.71 Canaan, Abraham gathered 318 men together. Now we need to 00:05:45.74\00:05:50.85 understand that Abraham was not a warrior and yet he gathered 00:05:50.88\00:05:56.02 these 318 men together and they went after this coalition of 00:05:56.05\00:06:01.69 kings and the story tells us that Abraham and his 318 men 00:06:01.72\00:06:07.23 were able to defeat the kings of Canaan and Abraham was able to 00:06:07.30\00:06:13.13 bring back all the riches and release the hostages that they 00:06:13.17\00:06:18.07 had taken. There are two key ideas in this story that comes 00:06:18.11\00:06:23.14 before the episode about Melchizedek. First of all, you 00:06:23.18\00:06:28.15 have hostages and secondly we find here enemies who take the 00:06:28.18\00:06:33.05 hostages. We'll find that this is very important to understand 00:06:33.09\00:06:37.69 a little bit later on in our story. So the enemies come and 00:06:37.73\00:06:42.50 they take hostages. Abraham goes he defeats the enemies and he 00:06:42.53\00:06:47.34 delivers the hostages from bondage. Then of course as 00:06:47.37\00:06:52.21 Abraham is returning we find this episode that we just read 00:06:52.24\00:06:56.75 about; the episode where Abraham meets with Melchizedek. 00:06:56.78\00:07:00.88 Now there are several things that I want to underline about 00:07:00.92\00:07:05.59 the passage we just read from Genesis 14 and verses 18-20. 00:07:05.62\00:07:10.53 First of all, you'll notice in this passage that Melchizedek 00:07:10.56\00:07:15.36 suddenly appears on the scene. There's nothing about 00:07:15.40\00:07:20.00 Melchizedek before this and we don't know anything about 00:07:20.04\00:07:24.64 Melchizedek after this. He suddenly appears and then he 00:07:24.67\00:07:29.34 disappears from history. We don't know anything about his 00:07:29.38\00:07:33.58 birth. We don't know anything about his genealogy. We don't 00:07:33.62\00:07:38.22 know anything about his destiny. He suddenly appears and he 00:07:38.25\00:07:42.79 disappears almost as quickly as he appeared on the scene. 00:07:42.82\00:07:47.30 Another important detail that we just read is that Melchizedek 00:07:47.30\00:07:52.77 was the king of Salem. Now if you read Psalm 76 and verses 1 00:07:52.80\00:07:57.97 and 2, you're going to discover that Salem is another name for 00:07:58.01\00:08:03.18 Jerusalem. And so actually Melchizedek was the king of 00:08:03.21\00:08:08.98 Salem or he was the king of Jerusalem. But you'll notice 00:08:09.02\00:08:14.79 also that Melchizedek was not only the king of Jerusalem but 00:08:14.82\00:08:20.40 he's also spoken of as priest of the Most High God. And so 00:08:20.43\00:08:26.10 Melchizedek is king and he is also priest in the city of 00:08:26.13\00:08:31.07 Jerusalem. In other words, in himself in the one person, he 00:08:31.11\00:08:36.38 gathers the two functions of king and priest. I want you to 00:08:36.41\00:08:41.92 notice also that when Abraham meets Melchizedek, Melchizedek 00:08:41.95\00:08:47.82 brings out wine and bread. That is very, very significant that a 00:08:47.86\00:08:52.99 priest would bring out bread and wine. Actually we're going to 00:08:53.03\00:08:58.10 find that we have symbolized here the Lord's supper, the 00:08:58.13\00:09:02.20 symbolism of the Lord's supper and of course Jesus is our 00:09:02.24\00:09:06.24 great high priest according to the book of Hebrews. You'll also 00:09:06.27\00:09:11.25 notice in this passage that Melchizedek blessed Abraham and 00:09:11.28\00:09:16.28 Abraham gave Melchizedek tithes from all of the loot, or all of 00:09:16.32\00:09:21.26 the booty or the spoils that Abraham had brought back to 00:09:21.29\00:09:25.39 Sodom. Now these are very important details because it 00:09:25.43\00:09:29.03 shows that Melchizedek is actually greater than Abraham 00:09:29.06\00:09:32.83 because the one who blesses is greater than the one who is 00:09:32.87\00:09:37.01 blessed. And not only that the one who receives the tithes is 00:09:37.04\00:09:41.38 greater than the one who gives the tithes. And so for these two 00:09:41.41\00:09:45.68 reasons we discover that Melchizedek is a greater 00:09:45.71\00:09:49.12 figure than Abraham. Now it's interesting to notice that as 00:09:49.15\00:09:54.26 scripture moves along, Melchizedek is mentioned once 00:09:54.29\00:09:58.59 again in the Old Testament in Psalm 110. Now you're probably 00:09:58.63\00:10:02.60 saying, Pastor Bohr, your saying that Melchizedek doesn't 00:10:02.63\00:10:06.90 appear again in scripture after Genesis 14 and that's true. 00:10:06.94\00:10:11.61 Melchizedek as a person does not reappear. What we find is the 00:10:11.64\00:10:16.38 priesthood of the order of Melchizedek and so it's talking 00:10:16.41\00:10:20.55 the priesthood that comes from the priesthood of Melchizedek, 00:10:20.58\00:10:25.09 but it's not talking directly about Melchizedek. Now in Psalm 00:10:25.12\00:10:29.59 110 verses 1 and 4, we have a very interesting Messianic 00:10:29.62\00:10:35.16 prophecy which refers to Melchizedek. Notice Psalm 110 00:10:35.20\00:10:40.70 and verse 1 first of all. It says there:... 00:10:40.74\00:10:43.91 Now there are several things in this verse that I want to 00:10:55.48\00:10:58.22 underline. First of all, when it says the Lord said to my Lord, 00:10:58.25\00:11:03.59 the Lord, the first reference to Lord is the covenant name 00:11:03.63\00:11:09.36 Yahweh or Jehovah. The second reference to Lord is Adonai. 00:11:09.40\00:11:15.07 So in other words when it says in Hebrew that Yahweh or Jehovah 00:11:15.10\00:11:21.54 said to Adonai. And so really it says, Jehovah said to my Adonai, 00:11:21.58\00:11:27.55 sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool. 00:11:27.58\00:11:32.75 Now it's very important to realize that this is a Messianic 00:11:32.79\00:11:37.99 prophecy. It's being given by David, but David is not talking 00:11:38.03\00:11:42.83 about his son Solomon. He's talking about someone who is far 00:11:42.86\00:11:47.00 greater than Solomon and you say how do we know this? Simply 00:11:47.04\00:11:52.21 because in Psalm 110 it says the Lord said to my Lord. David is 00:11:52.24\00:11:57.38 writing that the Lord said to his Lord, to David's Lord. 00:11:57.41\00:12:01.55 Now who was David's son? David's son was Solomon. What is David 00:12:01.58\00:12:07.56 calling Solomon if this is Solomon? He's calling Solomon 00:12:07.59\00:12:12.69 his what? His Lord. Let me ask you, was Solomon David's Lord? 00:12:12.73\00:12:18.07 Now he was David's son. And so basically what we find in this 00:12:18.10\00:12:23.47 verse is that this is not speaking about Solomon being 00:12:23.51\00:12:27.14 David's son, because David is calling this individual Lord. 00:12:27.18\00:12:32.25 And so if he's calling this individual Lord, my Lord, in 00:12:32.28\00:12:36.99 fact, it must refer to someone other than his son Solomon. 00:12:37.02\00:12:41.26 Are you understanding what I'm saying? And so really this is a 00:12:41.29\00:12:44.96 Messianic prophecy. Now let me ask you, does this Messianic 00:12:44.99\00:12:49.40 prophecy talk about kingship, about rulership? Yes. In fact, 00:12:49.43\00:12:54.97 Jehovah is say to my Adonai, David says, the Lord is saying 00:12:55.00\00:13:01.14 to my Lord to do what? To sit at my right hand. Is he going to 00:13:01.18\00:13:07.35 sit on the throne? Yes he is. Sit at my right hand until I 00:13:07.38\00:13:13.52 make your enemies your footstool Who's going to make the enemies 00:13:13.56\00:13:18.36 the footstool. It is Jehovah Lord who is going to make the 00:13:18.39\00:13:24.20 enemies of Adonai or the enemies of the son of David in a 00:13:24.23\00:13:30.01 Messianic sense, to be under his feet. Now I want you to notice 00:13:30.04\00:13:37.48 also Psalm 110 and verse 4. This individual is not only a king 00:13:37.51\00:13:44.92 who sits with Jehovah on the throne because Jehovah says 00:13:44.95\00:13:49.76 to Adonai, sit at my right hand till I make all of your enemies 00:13:49.79\00:13:54.83 your footstool. Not only is he a king but I want you to notice 00:13:54.83\00:14:01.87 that he is also a priest. It says in Psalm 110 and verse 4: 00:14:01.90\00:14:07.34 Lord, that's the word Yahweh or the word Jehovah as we know it, 00:14:07.38\00:14:12.81 So let me ask you according to Psalm 110, is this Messianic 00:14:26.63\00:14:31.83 figure going to be both king and priest? He most certainly is. 00:14:31.87\00:14:36.30 And his priesthood is going to be according to the order of 00:14:36.34\00:14:41.58 whom? According to the order of Melchizedek. By the way, does 00:14:41.61\00:14:46.68 the king have a special Son who is going to sit with him on his 00:14:46.72\00:14:51.69 throne until all of the enemies are made subject to the Son 00:14:51.72\00:14:56.66 by the Father? Absolutely. Very important to remember this as we 00:14:56.69\00:15:01.03 move along in scripture. Now I would like to read another 00:15:01.06\00:15:05.90 passage from the Old Testament which is similar to what we just 00:15:05.93\00:15:10.14 noticed from Psalm 110. Zechariah chapter 6 and 00:15:10.17\00:15:15.74 verses 12 and 13. Zechariah chapter 6 and verses 12 and 13. 00:15:15.78\00:15:22.98 This is another Messianic prophecy, another prophecy 00:15:23.02\00:15:26.12 about the Messiah. And it's talking about another individual 00:15:26.15\00:15:30.66 who is going to be both king and priest and once again you have 00:15:30.69\00:15:35.50 two individuals involved, a Father and a Son. It says there 00:15:35.53\00:15:40.74 in Zechariah chapter 6 and verses 12 and 13 the following: 00:15:40.77\00:15:48.01 Then speak to him saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts saying 00:15:48.04\00:15:55.25 behold the man whose name is the Branch. From his place he shall 00:15:55.28\00:16:01.72 branch out and he shall build the temple of the Lord. Now let 00:16:01.76\00:16:06.93 me stop there for a minute. Who was it that built the temple of 00:16:06.96\00:16:12.10 the Lord in the Old Testament? It was Solomon. But is this 00:16:12.13\00:16:16.77 prophecy actually talking about Solomon? No. Just like Psalm 110 00:16:16.81\00:16:22.58 is not talking about Solomon, because in Psalm 110 actually 00:16:22.61\00:16:27.85 David is calling his son Lord. That means that his son is 00:16:27.88\00:16:32.02 greater than he is. It' can't be Solomon. It has to be a 00:16:32.05\00:16:36.09 Messianic figure so we're going to find here that the builder of 00:16:36.12\00:16:40.40 the temple of the Lord is not Solomon. It is one greater than 00:16:40.43\00:16:44.63 Solomon. And so he continues saying: He shall build the 00:16:44.67\00:16:49.04 temple of the Lord. He shall bear the glory and shall sit and 00:16:49.07\00:16:55.88 rule on his throne. Question: Is this Messianic figure, who is 00:16:55.91\00:17:01.85 called the Branch going to sit on a throne? He most certainly 00:17:01.88\00:17:07.49 is. He is going to sit and rule on his throne. But there's more. 00:17:07.52\00:17:13.70 Notice what it continues saying: So he shall be a priest on his 00:17:13.73\00:17:19.87 on his throne and the counsel of peach shall be between them 00:17:19.90\00:17:24.97 both. How many individuals are involved in this prophecy? 00:17:25.01\00:17:29.94 The word both means what? Two. How many are sitting on the 00:17:29.98\00:17:36.08 throne? Two. Is the Son both king and priest? Yes he is. 00:17:36.12\00:17:41.09 Now in the Old Testament you remember that the kingship 00:17:41.12\00:17:46.36 belonged to the tribe of Judah. And the priesthood belonged 00:17:46.39\00:17:52.13 to the tribe of Levi. But here we find an individual who bears 00:17:52.17\00:17:57.41 both functions or both offices. He sits as a king on the throne 00:17:57.44\00:18:02.68 with his Father and he also serves as a priest after the 00:18:02.71\00:18:08.92 order of Melchizedek. He is king and priest. He takes the two 00:18:08.95\00:18:13.19 functions which belong to the tribes in the Old Testament and 00:18:13.22\00:18:18.39 now he joins them in himself. Now the question is, who is 00:18:18.43\00:18:23.47 this Son of David who is greater than Solomon the literal son of 00:18:23.50\00:18:30.17 David? Well we don't have to guess because in the book of 00:18:30.21\00:18:35.48 Acts chapter 2 and verses 34-36 we find the answer given by 00:18:35.51\00:18:41.55 Peter on the day of Pentecost. Acts chapter 2 and verses 34-36. 00:18:41.58\00:18:47.59 We find here the Apostle Peter saying this:... 00:18:47.62\00:18:51.59 What prophecy is Peter quoting from? He is quoting for Psalm 00:19:09.61\00:19:16.99 110 and now notice the last part of the verse... 00:19:17.02\00:19:21.46 So in whom is the prophecy of Melchizedek fulfilled? It is 00:19:36.30\00:19:42.88 fulfilled in Jesus who becomes the King and the Priest of 00:19:42.91\00:19:49.45 Israel and I'm not referring about literal Israel. 00:19:49.48\00:19:52.95 I'm speaking about true spiritual Israel that joins 00:19:52.99\00:19:56.39 Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Now the greatest development of 00:19:56.42\00:20:01.43 the Melchizedek theme in the Bible is found in the book of 00:20:01.46\00:20:05.43 Hebrews chapter 7 and we're going to move through Hebrews 00:20:05.47\00:20:09.34 chapter 7. We're actually going to go through the whole chapter 00:20:09.37\00:20:13.31 and we're going to see what it has to teach us about Jesus as 00:20:13.34\00:20:17.61 the successor of Melchizedek or Jesus as the priest according 00:20:17.65\00:20:22.32 to the order of Melchizedek. Let's begin in Hebrews chapter 7 00:20:22.35\00:20:27.79 and verses 1-3 where we have an introduction to Melchizedek. 00:20:27.82\00:20:32.36 And by the way, in the book of Hebrews we're going to find some 00:20:32.39\00:20:36.87 additional details that are not mentioned in Genesis. 00:20:36.90\00:20:38.83 We're going to find that the Apostle Paul, whom I believe is 00:20:38.87\00:20:42.47 writing in the book of Hebrews actually takes the story from 00:20:42.50\00:20:47.08 Genesis 14 and he not only tells us certain things about 00:20:47.11\00:20:51.61 Melchizedek that are mentioned in Genesis 14, but he actually 00:20:51.65\00:20:55.32 tells us a few things that are not mentioned. In other words, 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.95 he not only takes into account what Genesis says, but he also 00:20:58.99\00:21:02.69 takes into account what Genesis does not say, what Genesis is 00:21:02.72\00:21:06.43 silent about. Notice Hebrews chapter 7 and verses 1-3: 00:21:06.46\00:21:14.10 Is that in harmony with what we read in Genesis? Absolutely. 00:21:20.38\00:21:23.75 He is king and is priest... 00:21:23.78\00:21:25.38 Now let me stop there just for a moment. The name Melchizedek 00:21:46.13\00:21:51.31 comes from two Hebrew words: The word Melech which means king 00:21:51.34\00:21:56.18 and the word sadach which means righteousness. So the name 00:21:56.21\00:22:00.25 actually means king of righteousness. Now according to 00:22:00.28\00:22:04.92 the New Testament, who is our righteousness? Christ is our 00:22:04.95\00:22:09.02 righteousness. You'll notice also that the Apostle Paul 00:22:09.06\00:22:14.20 explains here that Melchizedek is the king of peace. 00:22:14.20\00:22:19.27 Now according to scripture who is the Shiloh, the peace giver, 00:22:19.30\00:22:24.37 or the one who brings peace? It is Jesus Christ. Now notice 00:22:24.41\00:22:29.41 in verse 3 that the Apostle Paul is arguing from what is not said 00:22:29.44\00:22:34.58 in Genesis chapter 14 and this has confused a lot of people. 00:22:34.62\00:22:39.42 It says here in verse 3 about Melchizedek:... 00:22:39.45\00:22:43.29 Now what has confused people is they say this has to be some 00:22:59.41\00:23:02.84 divine figure. Melchizedek has to be a divine figure because 00:23:02.88\00:23:06.01 we're told here that he didn't have a father and he didn't have 00:23:06.05\00:23:09.12 a mother and he didn't have a genealogy. He didn't have a 00:23:09.15\00:23:12.72 beginning of days, he didn't have an ending of life so this 00:23:12.75\00:23:17.29 has to be Jesus or has to be a divine figure. Absolutely not. 00:23:17.33\00:23:21.86 What the Apostle Paul is arguing is that we do not have any 00:23:21.90\00:23:26.47 record of these things. In other words, do we know who 00:23:26.50\00:23:31.94 Melchizedek's father was? No. Do we know who is mother was? Do we 00:23:31.97\00:23:36.85 have any genealogy. No. Do we have any record of his beginning 00:23:36.88\00:23:41.75 of days or of his ending of days? Absolutely not. Now the 00:23:41.78\00:23:46.62 text makes it very clear that Melchizedek is not Christ 00:23:46.65\00:23:51.53 because the last part of the verse says but made like the 00:23:51.56\00:23:56.23 Son of God, remains a priest continually. Notice that 00:23:56.26\00:24:00.90 Melchizedek is not the Son of God; he is made like the Son of 00:24:00.94\00:24:05.74 God. In other words, Melchizedek is a type of Christ. He is a 00:24:05.77\00:24:10.21 representative of Christ. He is an illustration of the work of 00:24:10.25\00:24:14.62 Jesus Christ. Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:24:14.65\00:24:17.49 So when it says that he was without father, without mother, 00:24:17.52\00:24:20.86 without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor 00:24:20.89\00:24:24.16 end of life it's not saying that he had no beginning and he had 00:24:24.19\00:24:27.96 no end. What's it's saying is that we have no record of this. 00:24:28.00\00:24:31.77 By the way, did the priesthood of Aaron, the Levitical 00:24:31.80\00:24:36.71 priesthood, depend on keeping a very careful record of 00:24:36.74\00:24:41.58 genealogies. Absolutely. Because you had to be a member of the 00:24:41.61\00:24:45.78 tribe of what? Of Levi, in order to be a priest. But what the 00:24:45.81\00:24:50.62 Apostle Paul is arguing here is that Melchizedek had a right to 00:24:50.65\00:24:55.89 the priesthood not because he was of a certain genealogy but 00:24:55.92\00:25:00.60 because his priesthood was of a different order. Are you 00:25:00.63\00:25:05.20 understanding what I'm saying? Now let's jump to verse 4, verse 00:25:05.23\00:25:10.47 4 and actually through verse 10 we're going to find that the 00:25:10.51\00:25:15.71 emphasis is that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham. And I must 00:25:15.74\00:25:21.02 warn you that the argumentation here becomes a little bit tricky 00:25:21.05\00:25:25.39 so you have to kind of stick with me on this. You know don't 00:25:25.42\00:25:29.92 start thinking about what you're going to do tomorrow or start 00:25:29.96\00:25:33.50 day dreaming because I'm going to lose you. The Apostle Paul 00:25:33.53\00:25:37.37 uses some very strange logic in this passage. It says there 00:25:37.40\00:25:41.27 in verse 4... 00:25:41.30\00:25:42.40 Question: Who is greater, the one who gives the tithe of the 00:25:53.78\00:25:58.39 one who receives the tithe? The argument of the Apostle Paul is 00:25:58.42\00:26:02.99 that the receiver of the tithes is greater than the giver. 00:26:03.02\00:26:06.09 And for this reason Melchizedek is greater than Abraham because 00:26:06.13\00:26:11.10 Abraham gave him the tithes. Notice verse 5... 00:26:11.13\00:26:15.17 Now did the Levites receive the tithes? Yes they did. Did the 00:26:32.82\00:26:36.62 Levites come from Abraham? Did they descend from Abraham? 00:26:36.66\00:26:41.36 Yes they did. So the argument is that when Abraham gave 00:26:41.40\00:26:45.90 Melchizedek the tithes because the Levites descend from 00:26:45.93\00:26:50.41 Abraham the Levites Melchizedek tithes. I don't know if you are 00:26:50.44\00:26:55.44 following what I am saying. It's saying that actually Levi was in 00:26:55.48\00:26:59.41 the loins of Abraham. That means that he's going to descend from 00:26:59.45\00:27:03.35 Abraham. So when Abraham gave tithe to Melchizedek, the 00:27:03.39\00:27:07.12 Levites gave tithes to Melchizedek through Abraham 00:27:07.16\00:27:10.83 their representative and this makes the Levites also lesser 00:27:10.86\00:27:17.23 that Melchizedek. Are you understanding what the 00:27:17.27\00:27:19.70 argumentation is? Now let's go once again here to verse 5. 00:27:19.73\00:27:23.17 And indeed those who are the sons of Levi who received 00:27:23.20\00:27:26.61 the priesthood have a commandment to receive 00:27:26.64\00:27:28.91 tithes from the people according to the law, that is 00:27:28.94\00:27:31.35 the law of the priesthood, that is from their brethren 00:27:31.38\00:27:33.78 Now not only is Melchizedek greater than Abraham because 00:27:52.77\00:27:58.57 Abraham gives him the tithes, but Melchizedek is also greater 00:27:58.61\00:28:02.81 than Abraham because Melchizedek blesses Abraham and the one who 00:28:02.84\00:28:06.98 blesses is greater than the one who is blessed. Notice what we 00:28:07.02\00:28:11.09 find in verse 7... 00:28:11.12\00:28:12.45 Do you understand the logic that the Apostle Paul is using? He's 00:28:49.46\00:28:53.60 saying that the priesthood of Melchizedek is greater than the 00:28:53.63\00:28:57.73 priesthood of Aaron or the priesthood of the Levites. 00:28:57.77\00:29:02.34 And it's true for two reasons. Number one: Because the Levites 00:29:02.37\00:29:07.51 through Abraham gave tithes to whom? To Melchizedek. And second 00:29:07.54\00:29:12.68 Abraham and also the Levites through Abraham were what? 00:29:12.71\00:29:17.29 Were blessed by Melchizedek and the one who is blessed is lesser 00:29:17.32\00:29:23.32 than the one who blesses. Raise your hand if you're 00:29:23.36\00:29:26.23 understanding what I'm saying. This is a very important part of 00:29:26.26\00:29:29.43 the argument of the Apostle Paul. So in verses 4-10 the 00:29:29.46\00:29:35.74 Apostle Paul is emphasizing that Melchizedek was greater than 00:29:35.77\00:29:40.61 Abraham and he was greater than the priesthood of the Levites. 00:29:40.64\00:29:44.91 This is very foundational for what he's going to come to in a 00:29:44.95\00:29:49.15 moment. Now in verses 11-13, we're going to find that in 00:29:49.18\00:29:55.79 order for Christ who was the descendent of Melchizedek to be 00:29:55.82\00:30:01.93 a priest, he had to be a priest from a different order than the 00:30:01.96\00:30:06.90 Levites because Jesus was not from the tribe of Levi. Jesus 00:30:06.94\00:30:11.17 was from the tribe of what? Of Judah. Did Jesus have the right 00:30:11.21\00:30:15.84 to be a king? Yes he did. Did Jesus have right to be a priest 00:30:15.88\00:30:20.32 according to the order of the Levites? Absolutely not because 00:30:20.35\00:30:24.75 he was from a different tribe. And so Jesus had to have a 00:30:24.79\00:30:28.79 different priesthood than the Levitical priesthood or else he 00:30:28.82\00:30:32.76 could not be a priest. Now notice Hebrews chapter 7 and 00:30:32.79\00:30:37.03 verse 11... 00:30:37.07\00:30:40.14 it's not talking about the 10 commandments. It's the law about 00:30:49.91\00:30:52.65 the priesthood in its context. 00:30:52.68\00:30:55.98 The law here is not the 10 commandment law it is the law 00:31:12.70\00:31:16.44 of the what? Of the priesthood. The issue that is being 00:31:16.47\00:31:21.61 discussed here is the law of the priesthood. What gave priests 00:31:21.64\00:31:24.58 in the Old Testament the right to officiate. It has nothing 00:31:24.61\00:31:28.18 whatsoever to do with the 10 commandments. It's not saying 00:31:28.22\00:31:31.75 that the 10 commandments had to be changed. It's the law of the 00:31:31.79\00:31:35.46 priesthood which needed to be changed. Now I need to explain 00:31:35.49\00:31:38.73 a little word that we find here which is very important. 00:31:38.76\00:31:41.90 The word perfection. If perfection were through the 00:31:41.93\00:31:46.00 Levitical priesthood. This is not talking about moral 00:31:46.03\00:31:50.04 character perfection. In the book of Hebrews when it speaks 00:31:50.07\00:31:54.78 about perfection it's talking about the fulfillment of that 00:31:54.81\00:31:59.18 which was in figure in the Old Testament. Let me explain what I 00:31:59.21\00:32:03.08 mean. In the Old Testament, when the Israelites sacrificed an 00:32:03.12\00:32:07.76 animal did that truly remove their sin? No. It was only on 00:32:07.79\00:32:12.49 the basis of the future promise of the coming Christ that that 00:32:12.53\00:32:16.83 sin would be removed. When the priest went into the sanctuary 00:32:16.87\00:32:21.04 and interceded for the people did the priest actually do the 00:32:21.07\00:32:24.84 interceding or was it Jesus in the Old Testament who was doing 00:32:24.87\00:32:28.78 the interceding? It was Jesus. But we need to understand that 00:32:28.81\00:32:32.78 in order for Jesus to stand as our priest, he had to offer a 00:32:32.81\00:32:36.72 sacrifice first. And so when the Apostle Paul says that if 00:32:36.75\00:32:40.59 perfection was possible through the Levitical priesthood there 00:32:40.62\00:32:44.03 would not be need for another priesthood. He's not talking 00:32:44.06\00:32:48.10 about moral perfection. He's talking about the fact that the 00:32:48.13\00:32:52.00 Old Testament system did not actually remove sin, the priests 00:32:52.03\00:32:55.37 of the Old Testament were not the true priesthood. When Jesus 00:32:55.40\00:32:59.27 came the true sacrifice was offered and the true priesthood 00:32:59.31\00:33:03.31 of Jesus was instituted. Are you understanding? In other words, 00:33:03.35\00:33:07.32 the Old Testament system was inadequate. The New Testament 00:33:07.35\00:33:11.02 system because everything that the Old Testament pointed to was 00:33:11.05\00:33:14.32 fulfilled in Christ, it's much more adequate and actually 00:33:14.36\00:33:18.56 fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament. Now why would 00:33:18.59\00:33:22.10 there have to be a change in the law of the priesthood? 00:33:22.13\00:33:26.10 Why would it be necessary you know when Jesus comes as the 00:33:26.13\00:33:30.04 priest to change the law of the priesthood of the Old Testament? 00:33:30.07\00:33:33.68 Well the fact is that I've already mentioned that Jesus 00:33:33.71\00:33:37.45 could not legally be a priest according to the Levites. 00:33:37.48\00:33:41.18 In fact, it was a very serious thing for an individual to claim 00:33:41.22\00:33:45.32 to be a priest and not be from the proper genealogy. He could 00:33:45.35\00:33:49.09 actually be destroyed from among the people if he claimed to be a 00:33:49.12\00:33:53.26 priest and he did not belong to the tribe of Levi. So Jesus did 00:33:53.29\00:33:56.80 not have a right to be priest according to the order of Aaron; 00:33:56.83\00:34:00.64 therefore, the law of the succession of the priesthood had 00:34:00.67\00:34:04.57 to be changed and Jesus had to be a priest according to a 00:34:04.61\00:34:08.14 different order. Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:34:08.18\00:34:11.65 Now let's actually continue in verse 14, Hebrews chapter 7 and 00:34:11.68\00:34:17.29 verse 14. Here the Apostle Paul develops this thought... 00:34:17.32\00:34:20.79 Did anybody from Judah officiate at the altar? Did they have a 00:34:35.87\00:34:40.51 right to officiate as priests. No. So is Jesus from a different 00:34:40.54\00:34:45.51 tribe? Sure. In order for Jesus to be a priest, must the law of 00:34:45.55\00:34:50.22 the priesthood change, the law of succession according to the 00:34:50.25\00:34:54.89 fleshly commandment as we're going to find. Absolutely. 00:34:54.92\00:34:57.56 It says in verse 14... 00:34:57.59\00:35:00.36 What is the law of the fleshly commandment? It's the 00:35:20.75\00:35:23.45 commandment that says that priests must be from what? 00:35:23.49\00:35:26.15 From the tribe of Levi... 00:35:26.19\00:35:28.09 Because as Melchizedek we don't have any record of his beginning 00:35:31.59\00:35:35.50 or his ending of days, we don't have a record of his father and 00:35:35.53\00:35:39.43 his mother, his priesthood continues so also with Jesus. 00:35:39.47\00:35:44.11 Jesus is a priest according to a different order. He has the 00:35:44.14\00:35:48.74 right to a priesthood that is not included in the priesthood 00:35:48.78\00:35:53.35 of Aaron in the Levitical priesthood. Actually in fact, 00:35:53.38\00:35:57.29 if you look at the Old Testament you'll discover that Jesus gets 00:35:57.32\00:36:00.72 his right to be a priest from Melchizedek. But he gets a 00:36:00.76\00:36:05.39 description of his functions as priest from Aaron. In other 00:36:05.43\00:36:09.76 words, everything that Jesus does as our priest is prefigured 00:36:09.80\00:36:13.67 by the priesthood of Aaron. We don't know very much about what 00:36:13.70\00:36:17.44 Melchizedek did in officiating as a priest, but we know a lot 00:36:17.47\00:36:21.41 about what priests did in the Levitical system and so Jesus 00:36:21.44\00:36:25.55 gets a description of his functions from the priesthood of 00:36:25.58\00:36:29.62 Levi or from the priesthood of Aaron while he gets the right to 00:36:29.65\00:36:34.76 his priesthood from the priesthood of Melchizedek. 00:36:34.79\00:36:38.19 Now notice verses 18 and 19. Actually let's go to verse 17 00:36:38.23\00:36:43.26 first. Let's not skip that one. It's very important. 00:36:43.30\00:36:46.84 It says there... 00:36:46.87\00:36:48.07 Where is that quotation from? From Psalm 110 and verse 4. 00:36:48.10\00:36:59.88 Is that a messianic prophecy, Psalm 110, verse 4? Is it 00:36:59.91\00:37:03.82 applied directly to Christ? Absolutely. So according to 00:37:03.85\00:37:07.69 whose order is Jesus a priest? He's a priest according to the 00:37:07.72\00:37:11.93 order of Melchizedek. It combines the prophecy of 00:37:11.96\00:37:15.23 Genesis 14 and the prophecy of Psalm 110. He does not come from 00:37:15.26\00:37:19.33 Aaron, then he would not have the right to do that, so the law 00:37:19.37\00:37:23.41 of the priesthood must be changed and he must belong to a 00:37:23.44\00:37:26.27 different order. Notice verses 18 and 19... 00:37:26.31\00:37:31.98 Which former commandment. I guess this is talking about the 00:37:37.15\00:37:40.49 Sabbath commandment right. How can you ever in the world say 00:37:40.52\00:37:43.79 that this is talking about the 10 commandments and yet 00:37:43.83\00:37:45.69 Christians will used this verse, they'll take it out of the 00:37:45.73\00:37:48.20 context and they'll say this shows that the Sabbath 00:37:48.23\00:37:51.87 commandment was annulled. It's talking about priesthoods. 00:37:51.90\00:37:55.07 It has nothing to do with the 10 commandments... 00:37:55.10\00:37:58.37 You couldn't profit because Jesus couldn't be a priest 00:38:05.55\00:38:09.08 according to that order... 00:38:09.12\00:38:11.05 What does that mean that the law made nothing perfect? 00:38:13.19\00:38:16.96 Did the priesthood of Aaron actually take away sin? No. 00:38:16.99\00:38:20.70 Did it legally remove sin? No. Did it give the priests a legal 00:38:20.73\00:38:24.47 right to represent Israel? No, because they were sinful men. 00:38:24.50\00:38:29.57 And so it was unprofitable and weak so it says for the law made 00:38:29.60\00:38:34.61 nothing perfect... 00:38:34.64\00:38:36.04 In the Old Testament system the people could actually not draw 00:38:43.15\00:38:46.69 near to God. There were barriers because of the priesthood. 00:38:46.72\00:38:50.39 But now we have access to the throne of God through Jesus 00:38:50.43\00:38:55.53 Christ the true priest according to the order of 00:38:55.56\00:38:58.57 Melchizedek. And now I want you to notice the priesthood of 00:38:58.60\00:39:03.20 Aaron was something that was inherited because of your 00:39:03.24\00:39:09.68 lineage. But the priesthood of Melchizedek was by a divine 00:39:09.71\00:39:16.15 oath. Notice Hebrews chapter 7 and verses 20-24. It says... 00:39:16.18\00:39:21.16 Inasmuch as he was not made priest without an oath. In other 00:39:21.19\00:39:26.09 words Jesus was not made priest without an oath... 00:39:26.13\00:39:28.60 Who is they? The Levitical priests. They did it by lineage, 00:39:31.57\00:39:36.57 not by an oath... 00:39:36.60\00:39:37.71 Is this a far greater priesthood when it involves an oath from 00:39:52.95\00:39:57.06 God the Father saying to Jesus you are a priest forever after 00:39:57.09\00:40:00.96 the order of Melchizedek rather than the weak commandment that 00:40:00.96\00:40:04.57 you inherit the priesthood because of your lineage. That's 00:40:04.60\00:40:08.14 what the apostle Paul is saying. And then notice; let's go once 00:40:08.17\00:40:13.31 again to the quotation of Psalm The Lord has sworn and will 00:40:13.34\00:40:18.41 not relent, you are a priest forever according to the order 00:40:18.45\00:40:22.92 of Melchizedek... 00:40:22.95\00:40:24.05 Why is Jesus a surety of a better covenant than this old 00:40:31.03\00:40:34.86 Levitical covenant. It's because Jesus fulfills the Levitical 00:40:34.93\00:40:40.00 covenant and Jesus becomes a true priest who can represent us 00:40:40.04\00:40:44.84 before God. Jesus actually has the right to be our intercessor 00:40:44.87\00:40:49.81 because he is God and he is man and he is perfect. Notice also 00:40:49.84\00:40:54.72 verse 23... 00:40:54.75\00:40:56.38 Was the priesthood of the Levites a changeable priesthood? 00:41:11.20\00:41:15.00 Of course, because the priests what? The priests died. 00:41:15.04\00:41:18.77 They could not continue. Is the priesthood of Jesus changeless, 00:41:18.81\00:41:23.78 enduring and forever? Absolutely because as Melchizedek we have 00:41:23.81\00:41:28.48 no record of his origin or of his destiny. Jesus according to 00:41:28.52\00:41:32.89 that priesthood we have also the knowledge that Jesus had 00:41:32.92\00:41:37.46 no origin and Jesus is obviously not going to have any end. 00:41:37.49\00:41:41.96 So what is said about Melchizedek on a lesser 00:41:42.00\00:41:45.30 scale is said about Jesus on a much greater scale because 00:41:45.33\00:41:49.97 Jesus is far greater than Melchizedek and so the process 00:41:50.01\00:41:54.68 is Melchizedek is greater that Abraham and Levi but Jesus 00:41:54.71\00:41:59.81 is greater than whom. Jesus is greater than Melchizedek. Now 00:41:59.85\00:42:04.45 there's another reason why Jesus is greater than the priesthood 00:42:04.49\00:42:08.96 of Aaron. Not only because the priesthood of Melchizedek was 00:42:08.99\00:42:13.43 by an oath, but also because Jesus is a sinless priest. 00:42:13.46\00:42:19.70 Notice verses 26-28 of Hebrews chapter 7. Verses 26-28. It says 00:42:19.73\00:42:29.14 Is the priesthood of Jesus eternal and unchanging? Yes. 00:42:41.82\00:42:46.33 And so we can always come to him and know that he represents 00:42:46.36\00:42:50.97 us before his father. That could not be said about the priesthood 00:42:51.00\00:42:55.40 of the Levites because they were prevented by death and 00:42:55.44\00:42:58.57 they were prevented by their sinfulness from fully fulfilling 00:42:58.61\00:43:02.08 the law of the priesthood. Now notice what it continues saying 00:43:02.11\00:43:05.55 in verse 26... 00:43:05.58\00:43:07.08 How is Jesus different than the Levitical priests. He is what?.. 00:43:23.16\00:43:27.67 Holy, harmless, undefiled and separate from sinners and has 00:43:27.70\00:43:32.81 become higher than the heavens. Now let's stop there for a 00:43:32.84\00:43:37.91 moment. Somebody says well Pastor Bohr, it says here 00:43:37.95\00:43:42.05 separate from sinners. So how can Jesus represent us if he's 00:43:42.08\00:43:47.09 separate from sinners. Let me give you an illustration so that 00:43:47.12\00:43:53.80 we can understand. If you were sinking in quick sand would you 00:43:53.83\00:43:59.73 rather have someone on solid ground with a rope in his hand 00:43:59.77\00:44:05.04 or would you rather have that individual in the quick sand 00:44:05.07\00:44:10.68 with you sympathizing with your experience? (Chuckles) I think 00:44:10.71\00:44:16.25 you would say I would rather have someone on solid ground 00:44:16.28\00:44:19.89 with a rope who can throw the rope. You see if Jesus was a 00:44:19.92\00:44:24.39 sinner just like us he would need a redeemer, he would need a 00:44:24.43\00:44:28.50 sacrifice, he would need a priest to represent him. But the 00:44:28.53\00:44:32.73 fact is that he's separated from sinners in the sense that he 00:44:32.77\00:44:37.17 never committed sin. He did live among sinners, he sympathized 00:44:37.21\00:44:41.01 with the sinners, he understood the sinners, he understood the 00:44:41.04\00:44:44.98 temptations that we have but he never sinned. So he can identify 00:44:45.01\00:44:48.72 with us but he's on solid ground and he can throw us the rope and 00:44:48.75\00:44:52.39 he can pull us up and he can save us from the mire of sin. 00:44:52.42\00:44:56.19 Notice verse 27. Who does not need... 00:44:56.22\00:45:01.16 So the priests in the Old Testament you know they kept 00:45:16.28\00:45:18.78 offering sacrifices and sacrifices and sacrifices and 00:45:18.81\00:45:21.28 sacrifices. With Jesus no way. All he has to do is offer what? 00:45:21.32\00:45:26.65 One sacrifice and that qualifies him to become our priest. 00:45:26.69\00:45:31.96 By the way this is very important for some people who 00:45:31.99\00:45:35.76 belong to a certain church whose name I won't mention that 00:45:35.80\00:45:40.64 teaches that in the religious service Jesus is sacrificed anew 00:45:40.67\00:45:46.04 each time and the sacrifice of Christ is repeated time and 00:45:46.07\00:45:51.38 again, time and again, each time that the service is performed. 00:45:51.41\00:45:56.32 The book of Hebrews tells us very clearly that Jesus died 00:45:56.35\00:46:00.92 once for all and in this way he was qualified to be our priest. 00:46:00.96\00:46:07.76 Verse 28:... 00:46:07.76\00:46:09.53 Which law is this that appoints this. What law is it, the 10 00:46:14.80\00:46:19.81 commandments, right? No. It's the law of the priesthood... 00:46:19.84\00:46:24.91 In other words, as a result of what he did he has been 00:46:41.46\00:46:44.87 qualified forever to be our high priest. Doesn't that comfort you 00:46:44.90\00:46:49.97 to know that we have an elder brother sitting on the throne as 00:46:50.01\00:46:55.08 king but the king also represents us as priest? 00:46:55.11\00:46:58.25 I'll tell you what, that's a very comforting thought that he 00:46:58.28\00:47:01.78 doesn't come like the Levites and repeat the same sacrifices 00:47:01.82\00:47:05.35 over and over again, that he wasn't full of sin and therefore 00:47:05.39\00:47:08.96 needed an intercessor and a sacrifice for himself; that his 00:47:08.99\00:47:12.56 priesthood is not interrupted by death but that he's a priest 00:47:12.59\00:47:16.06 forever and he has absolute power to represent us before 00:47:16.10\00:47:19.57 God. That's a marvelous thought. Now let's summarize what we have 00:47:19.60\00:47:24.07 studied so far. Jesus in eternity shared the throne with 00:47:24.11\00:47:30.95 his Father. We found that in Zechariah chapter 6 verses 12 00:47:30.98\00:47:36.45 and 13. They both sat on the throne. The counsel of peace was 00:47:36.48\00:47:40.99 between them both. In other words, in a certain sense Jesus 00:47:41.02\00:47:45.49 has been king and Jesus has been priest at least with respect to 00:47:45.53\00:47:50.97 the promise of salvation which was made in eternity from 00:47:51.00\00:47:54.84 eternity. In a certain sense, Jesus is a priest from eternity. 00:47:54.87\00:47:58.41 Not in actual coming and being sacrificed and actually 00:47:58.44\00:48:02.34 resurrecting from the dead and going to represent us before God 00:48:02.38\00:48:05.85 but he's actually been the go between the Father and 00:48:05.88\00:48:10.69 us. Jesus actually was the one who created us. So we find that 00:48:10.72\00:48:16.16 Jesus actually is a king and a priest forever. Furthermore, 00:48:16.19\00:48:21.63 we have noticed that Jesus was made priest by an oath by his 00:48:21.66\00:48:26.80 Father which was repeated in Psalm 110 but which actually was 00:48:26.84\00:48:31.61 made by the Father in eternity. The Father said if man should 00:48:31.64\00:48:36.68 sin you will be the sacrifice and you will be the priest to 00:48:36.71\00:48:41.82 bring salvation to those who sin. We find that Jesus combines 00:48:41.85\00:48:47.16 both offices, the office of priest and the office of king. 00:48:47.19\00:48:53.23 The sacrifice of Jesus actually forgives sin once and for all. 00:48:53.26\00:48:59.23 There's no need for any other sacrifice. And because his 00:48:59.27\00:49:03.44 sacrifice was once for all Jesus is qualified forever to 00:49:03.47\00:49:07.48 represent us before the Father because he ever lives to 00:49:07.51\00:49:11.45 intercede for us. Now let me ask you, has Jesus delivered us from 00:49:11.48\00:49:18.79 our enemies. You remember the original story in Genesis 00:49:18.82\00:49:23.22 chapter 14. By the way, this idea is picked up in Psalm 110 00:49:23.26\00:49:27.66 where it says until I make your enemies your what? 00:49:27.66\00:49:30.90 Your footstool. See, it's picking up on the idea the small 00:49:30.93\00:49:34.77 scale model of Genesis 14 where the enemies are overcome and 00:49:34.80\00:49:39.67 the hostages are what? The hostages are released. Question: 00:49:39.71\00:49:45.01 Did Jesus destroy our spiritual enemies by his death on the 00:49:45.05\00:49:50.39 cross? Yes he did. Did he deliver spiritual hostages from 00:49:50.42\00:49:55.22 bondage to sin? He most certainly did. In fact, let's 00:49:55.26\00:50:00.03 notice how this is picked up in Luke chapter 1 and verses 68-71. 00:50:00.06\00:50:05.53 Luke chapter 1 and verses 68-71: This is a very interesting 00:50:05.57\00:50:12.14 passage where Jesus is taken to the temple and I want you to 00:50:12.17\00:50:18.45 notice what words are spoken here and these words are spoken, 00:50:18.48\00:50:24.69 by the way, by Zacharias. It says there in verse 68 the 00:50:24.72\00:50:31.79 following: Blessed is the Lord God of Israel for he has visited 00:50:31.83\00:50:39.63 and redeemed his people and has raised up a what? A horn, by the 00:50:39.67\00:50:46.51 way that refers to kingship, a horn of salvation for us in the 00:50:46.54\00:50:51.68 house of his servant what? David There you have the connection 00:50:51.71\00:50:56.95 with Psalm 110. As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets 00:50:56.99\00:51:01.36 who have been since the world began that we should be saved 00:51:01.39\00:51:06.46 from whom? From our enemies and from the hand of all who hate 00:51:06.49\00:51:11.77 us. Was Jesus going to be the deliverer from our enemies. Yes. 00:51:11.80\00:51:16.37 Not primarily physical enemies but what? Spiritual enemies. 00:51:16.40\00:51:21.71 The devil, his angels, sin, the flesh, the world. By the way, 00:51:21.74\00:51:26.68 did Jesus release the captives. You can read in Luke chapter 4. 00:51:26.72\00:51:30.99 It says that Jesus came to release the captives. This is at 00:51:31.02\00:51:34.82 the beginning of his ministry and then of course you have 00:51:34.86\00:51:38.63 Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 8 where Jesus is ascending and it 00:51:38.66\00:51:42.63 says that he led captivity captive. Just like Abraham 00:51:42.66\00:51:48.07 went and he delivered Lot and he delivered the captives and 00:51:48.10\00:51:52.31 defeated the enemies and brought them back. Jesus the priest 00:51:52.34\00:51:56.54 according to the order of Melchizedek fulfills this 00:51:56.58\00:51:59.18 spiritually with his people. By the way, Hebrews chapter 7 00:51:59.21\00:52:03.55 emphasizes that Jesus is a special priest because he is 00:52:03.59\00:52:08.76 the Son in a special sense because he has a sinless 00:52:08.79\00:52:13.90 character and because he is confirmed by an oath from his 00:52:13.93\00:52:18.67 Father. Do you remember in Genesis chapter 14 that when the 00:52:18.70\00:52:24.44 victory was won bread and wine were brought out by this priest? 00:52:24.47\00:52:29.44 The priest of the Most High God. Why do you suppose bread and 00:52:29.48\00:52:34.88 wine would be brought out? Well let me ask this. What is the 00:52:34.92\00:52:40.79 commemoration that Jesus left of his victory on the cross of 00:52:40.82\00:52:46.70 Calvary? You know this. Jesus himself before he died 00:52:46.73\00:52:51.10 instituted in the church a special ceremony. It's called 00:52:51.13\00:52:55.07 the Lord's supper. And the Apostle Paul repeats this in 00:52:55.10\00:52:58.31 I Corinthians chapter 11 that the night that Jesus was 00:52:58.34\00:53:01.48 betrayed that Jesus took what? Jesus took bread and then he 00:53:01.51\00:53:05.31 took after this the cup which we know had grape juice 00:53:05.35\00:53:09.02 unfermented grape juice. And, in fact, the Apostle Paul 00:53:09.05\00:53:12.35 says that when you partake of this bread and when you drink 00:53:12.39\00:53:16.29 of this cup you announce the death of Jesus Christ until he 00:53:16.32\00:53:21.03 what? Until he comes. So the bringing out of bread and wine 00:53:21.06\00:53:26.63 by Melchizedek is actually a prefiguring of what Jesus does 00:53:26.67\00:53:31.47 offering his body represented by the bread and offering his 00:53:31.51\00:53:36.28 blood represented by the grape juice as symbols of his 00:53:36.31\00:53:40.95 salvation. It's actually a prefiguring of the Lord's 00:53:40.98\00:53:45.55 supper. It is a commemoration of the victory of Jesus on the 00:53:45.59\00:53:50.09 cross, the victory over the spiritual enemies and he who 00:53:50.13\00:53:54.56 released the captives from captivity to Satan, from 00:53:54.56\00:53:58.07 captivity to the world and from captivity to sin. Now the final 00:53:58.10\00:54:05.17 fulfillment of this prophecy of Psalm 110 is still to take place 00:54:05.21\00:54:12.28 I would like to read in the short period that we still have 00:54:12.31\00:54:17.32 left from I Corinthians chapter 15 and verses 24-28. And here 00:54:17.35\00:54:21.79 the Apostle Paul gets a little complicated in the way in which 00:54:21.82\00:54:27.60 he writes and so I am going to interpret as we go along. Once 00:54:27.60\00:54:33.30 again I Corinthians chapter 15 verses 24-28. The final 00:54:33.34\00:54:36.50 fulfillment of Genesis chapter 14. It says here: Then comes 00:54:36.54\00:54:44.68 the end when he, that is Jesus, I'm going to put in the names of 00:54:44.71\00:54:49.95 the he's, who the he's represent here because there are a lot of 00:54:49.98\00:54:54.52 he's and you get kind of confused which he refers to 00:54:54.56\00:54:59.19 whom. And so it says that he, that is Jesus, delivers the 00:54:59.23\00:55:03.16 kingdom to God the Father. Who's going to deliver the kingdom to 00:55:03.20\00:55:07.80 God the Father? Jesus is. When he, now it's the Father, when 00:55:07.84\00:55:12.77 he, that is the Father, puts an end to all rule and all authority and all power. 00:55:12.81\00:55:17.35 By the way, who gave the victory to Abraham? Listen, if you read 00:55:17.38\00:55:21.85 the story, it had to be God who gave him the victory. 00:55:21.88\00:55:24.99 And Melchizedek comes to commemorate the victory, but 00:55:25.02\00:55:28.09 the victory was given by God. And so it says here, when he, 00:55:28.12\00:55:32.96 the Father, puts an end to all rule and all authority and all 00:55:32.99\00:55:38.27 power for he, that is Jesus, must reign till he, that is the 00:55:38.30\00:55:43.37 Father has put all enemies under his feet. When will all the 00:55:43.41\00:55:48.71 enemies be put under the feet of Jesus? At the end according 00:55:48.74\00:55:54.05 to this. And then it says the last enemy that will be 00:55:54.08\00:55:56.89 destroyed is what? Is death. Verse 27: For He, that is the 00:55:56.92\00:56:01.99 Father, has put all things under his, that is Jesus', feet. 00:56:02.02\00:56:05.99 But when he says all things are put under him that is under 00:56:06.03\00:56:10.10 Jesus, it is evident that the Father, or that he, which is the 00:56:10.13\00:56:14.14 Father, who put all things under him, that is under Jesus, is 00:56:14.17\00:56:18.37 accepted. Now when all things are made subject to him, that is 00:56:18.41\00:56:22.44 to Jesus. By the way, who makes them subject to him? The father 00:56:22.48\00:56:27.32 does. Then the Son himself will also be subject to him, that is 00:56:27.35\00:56:32.15 to the Father, who put all things under him, that is under 00:56:32.19\00:56:37.29 Jesus, that God, that is God the Father, may be all in all. 00:56:37.33\00:56:41.93 The final fulfillment and Jesus will be our priest forever in 00:56:41.96\00:56:46.47 the kingdom. He will be one of us. He will conserve his human 00:56:46.50\00:56:51.01 nature and we will have communion with him face to face 00:56:51.04\00:56:54.38 as our Brother who came to save and to redeem us. 00:56:54.41\00:56:58.78 Isn't this a marvelous message that God gives all the way back 00:56:58.81\00:57:04.35 in the book of Genesis. He's actually giving a prophecy 00:57:04.39\00:57:09.19 prefiguring the coming of our great High Priest, Jesus Christ, 00:57:09.22\00:57:14.46 our king who will sit with the Father on his throne and the 00:57:14.46\00:57:19.67 honor and the glory be to the Father forever and ever. 00:57:19.70\00:57:23.74
