Shall we bow our heads for prayer. Father in heaven, we 00:01:13.83\00:01:17.44 thank you for the awesome privilege of coming into your 00:01:17.47\00:01:21.01 presence to open your holy word. We ask that as we study about 00:01:21.05\00:01:25.88 the priesthood of Melchizedek that your Holy Spirit will be 00:01:25.92\00:01:30.12 with us to instruct us. We ask that you will give us divine 00:01:30.16\00:01:34.37 wisdom so that we might learn the lessons which will be useful 00:01:34.40\00:01:38.58 in our personal daily walk with Jesus and we thank you for 00:01:38.61\00:01:43.66 hearing our prayer for we ask it in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:01:43.69\00:01:48.67 In the Bible there is perhaps no more mysterious figure than an 00:01:48.71\00:01:54.80 individual called Melchizedek. He's an individual who is 00:01:54.83\00:01:59.07 mentioned in Genesis chapter 14. Throughout the course of 00:01:59.10\00:02:03.21 Christian history there have been different views about the 00:02:03.24\00:02:07.32 identity of Melchizedek. Some people have felt that 00:02:07.35\00:02:11.97 Melchizedek is actually another name for Michael the archangel. 00:02:12.01\00:02:16.93 Others actually believe that Melchizedek was another name 00:02:16.96\00:02:22.64 for Shem the son of Noah. Still others have believed that 00:02:22.68\00:02:28.29 Melchizedek is really a name for Christ in his preincarnate state 00:02:28.33\00:02:34.14 and still others have believed that Melchizedek is actually a 00:02:34.18\00:02:39.69 manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Now I want 00:02:39.72\00:02:44.23 to tell you as we begin that I don't believe that any of these 00:02:44.27\00:02:49.36 views is correct. I believe that Melchizedek was actually a 00:02:49.40\00:02:54.33 historical figure who comes on the scene and disappears from 00:02:54.37\00:02:59.23 the scene very quickly. Actually I would like to begin by reading 00:02:59.27\00:03:04.32 a statement, a very important statement, that we find in the 00:03:04.35\00:03:09.61 Review and Herald, February 18 of the year 1890. This is 00:03:09.64\00:03:14.83 written by Ellen White. She says this about Melchizedek: It was 00:03:14.87\00:03:21.71 Christ that spoke through Melchizedek, the priest of the 00:03:21.74\00:03:28.41 most high God. Melchizedek was not Christ, but he was the voice 00:03:28.45\00:03:35.19 of God in the world and the representative of the Father. 00:03:35.22\00:03:39.71 And all through the generations of the past Christ has spoken, 00:03:39.75\00:03:46.16 Christ has led his people and has been the light of the world. 00:03:46.19\00:03:51.50 And so we find very clearly in this statement that Melchizedek 00:03:51.53\00:03:56.91 was not Christ. Melchizedek was actually a representative of 00:03:56.95\00:04:02.09 Christ. And we want to study about that representative of 00:04:02.13\00:04:07.18 Christ as the story is found recorded in Genesis chapter 14 00:04:07.22\00:04:12.20 and verses 18-20. In fact, let's begin our study by reading those 00:04:12.24\00:04:18.42 verses. Genesis chapter 14 and verses 18-20. We find these 00:04:18.45\00:04:26.45 words... 00:04:26.48\00:05:03.18 Now in order to understand this passage, we must look at the 00:05:03.22\00:05:07.78 story that comes immediately before it. You probably remember 00:05:07.81\00:05:12.90 the story of how Lot and many of the men of Sodom were actually 00:05:12.94\00:05:17.75 taken hostage by this group of kings from Canaan. Actually it 00:05:17.79\00:05:22.27 was a coalition of many kings that got together. They came to 00:05:22.30\00:05:26.73 Sodom. They took Lot and many of the men from Sodom and of 00:05:26.76\00:05:31.12 course they took all of the loot or all of the riches of Sodom as 00:05:31.16\00:05:36.06 well. When Abraham heard that Lot and the men of Sodom and the 00:05:36.09\00:05:40.95 riches of Sodom had been taken by this coalition of kings from 00:05:40.98\00:05:45.81 Canaan, Abraham gathered 318 men together. Now we need to 00:05:45.84\00:05:50.95 understand that Abraham was not a warrior and yet he gathered 00:05:50.99\00:05:56.13 these 318 men together and they went after this coalition of 00:05:56.16\00:06:01.77 kings and the story tells us that Abraham and his 318 men 00:06:01.80\00:06:07.34 were able to defeat the kings of Canaan and Abraham was able to 00:06:07.38\00:06:13.24 bring back all the riches and release the hostages that they 00:06:13.28\00:06:18.17 had taken. There are two key ideas in this story that comes 00:06:18.21\00:06:23.24 before the episode about Melchizedek. First of all, you 00:06:23.27\00:06:28.23 have hostages and secondly we find here enemies who take the 00:06:28.27\00:06:33.15 hostages. We'll find that this is very important to understand 00:06:33.19\00:06:37.79 a little bit later on in our story. So the enemies come and 00:06:37.82\00:06:42.63 they take hostages. Abraham goes he defeats the enemies and he 00:06:42.66\00:06:47.44 delivers the hostages from bondage. Then of course as 00:06:47.47\00:06:52.32 Abraham is returning we find this episode that we just read 00:06:52.36\00:06:56.83 about; the episode where Abraham meets with Melchizedek. 00:06:56.87\00:07:00.99 Now there are several things that I want to underline about 00:07:01.03\00:07:05.69 the passage we just read from Genesis 14 and verses 18-20. 00:07:05.73\00:07:10.61 First of all, you'll notice in this passage that Melchizedek 00:07:10.65\00:07:15.50 suddenly appears on the scene. There's nothing about 00:07:15.53\00:07:20.12 Melchizedek before this and we don't know anything about 00:07:20.16\00:07:24.73 Melchizedek after this. He suddenly appears and then he 00:07:24.77\00:07:29.43 disappears from history. We don't know anything about his 00:07:29.47\00:07:33.70 birth. We don't know anything about his genealogy. We don't 00:07:33.73\00:07:38.31 know anything about his destiny. He suddenly appears and he 00:07:38.34\00:07:42.87 disappears almost as quickly as he appeared on the scene. 00:07:42.90\00:07:47.36 Another important detail that we just read is that Melchizedek 00:07:47.40\00:07:52.86 was the king of Salem. Now if you read Psalm 76 and verses 1 00:07:52.90\00:07:58.10 and 2, you're going to discover that Salem is another name for 00:07:58.13\00:08:03.30 Jerusalem. And so actually Melchizedek was the king of 00:08:03.33\00:08:09.09 Salem or he was the king of Jerusalem. But you'll notice 00:08:09.13\00:08:14.90 also that Melchizedek was not only the king of Jerusalem but 00:08:14.93\00:08:20.48 he's also spoken of as priest of the Most High God. And so 00:08:20.52\00:08:26.21 Melchizedek is king and he is also priest in the city of 00:08:26.25\00:08:31.19 Jerusalem. In other words, in himself in the one person, he 00:08:31.22\00:08:36.49 gathers the two functions of king and priest. I want you to 00:08:36.52\00:08:42.02 notice also that when Abraham meets Melchizedek, Melchizedek 00:08:42.06\00:08:47.91 brings out wine and bread. That is very, very significant that a 00:08:47.95\00:08:53.08 priest would bring out bread and wine. Actually we're going to 00:08:53.11\00:08:58.21 find that we have symbolized here the Lord's supper, the 00:08:58.24\00:09:02.30 symbolism of the Lord's supper and of course Jesus is our 00:09:02.34\00:09:06.33 great high priest according to the book of Hebrews. You'll also 00:09:06.37\00:09:11.34 notice in this passage that Melchizedek blessed Abraham and 00:09:11.37\00:09:16.36 Abraham gave Melchizedek tithes from all of the loot, or all of 00:09:16.40\00:09:21.36 the booty or the spoils that Abraham had brought back to 00:09:21.39\00:09:25.46 Sodom. Now these are very important details because it 00:09:25.50\00:09:29.16 shows that Melchizedek is actually greater than Abraham 00:09:29.19\00:09:32.95 because the one who blesses is greater than the one who is 00:09:32.98\00:09:37.12 blessed. And not only that the one who receives the tithes is 00:09:37.15\00:09:41.47 greater than the one who gives the tithes. And so for these two 00:09:41.50\00:09:45.79 reasons we discover that Melchizedek is a greater 00:09:45.82\00:09:49.20 figure than Abraham. Now it's interesting to notice that as 00:09:49.24\00:09:54.35 scripture moves along, Melchizedek is mentioned once 00:09:54.38\00:09:58.67 again in the Old Testament in Psalm 110. Now you're probably 00:09:58.71\00:10:02.71 saying, Pastor Bohr, your saying that Melchizedek doesn't 00:10:02.75\00:10:07.03 appear again in scripture after Genesis 14 and that's true. 00:10:07.06\00:10:11.71 Melchizedek as a person does not reappear. What we find is the 00:10:11.74\00:10:16.47 priesthood of the order of Melchizedek and so it's talking 00:10:16.50\00:10:20.66 the priesthood that comes from the priesthood of Melchizedek, 00:10:20.69\00:10:25.19 but it's not talking directly about Melchizedek. Now in Psalm 00:10:25.23\00:10:29.70 110 verses 1 and 4, we have a very interesting Messianic 00:10:29.73\00:10:35.27 prophecy which refers to Melchizedek. Notice Psalm 110 00:10:35.30\00:10:40.81 and verse 1 first of all. It says there:... 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.94 Now there are several things in this verse that I want to 00:10:55.57\00:10:58.32 underline. First of all, when it says the Lord said to my Lord, 00:10:58.36\00:11:03.69 the Lord, the first reference to Lord is the covenant name 00:11:03.72\00:11:09.47 Yahweh or Jehovah. The second reference to Lord is Adonai. 00:11:09.50\00:11:15.18 So in other words when it says in Hebrew that Yahweh or Jehovah 00:11:15.22\00:11:21.64 said to Adonai. And so really it says, Jehovah said to my Adonai, 00:11:21.68\00:11:27.66 sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool. 00:11:27.69\00:11:32.86 Now it's very important to realize that this is a Messianic 00:11:32.89\00:11:38.09 prophecy. It's being given by David, but David is not talking 00:11:38.13\00:11:42.95 about his son Solomon. He's talking about someone who is far 00:11:42.98\00:11:47.12 greater than Solomon and you say how do we know this? Simply 00:11:47.15\00:11:52.31 because in Psalm 110 it says the Lord said to my Lord. David is 00:11:52.34\00:11:57.47 writing that the Lord said to his Lord, to David's Lord. 00:11:57.50\00:12:01.63 Now who was David's son? David's son was Solomon. What is David 00:12:01.67\00:12:07.66 calling Solomon if this is Solomon? He's calling Solomon 00:12:07.69\00:12:12.76 his what? His Lord. Let me ask you, was Solomon David's Lord? 00:12:12.80\00:12:18.20 Now he was David's son. And so basically what we find in this 00:12:18.23\00:12:23.60 verse is that this is not speaking about Solomon being 00:12:23.63\00:12:27.25 David's son, because David is calling this individual Lord. 00:12:27.29\00:12:32.34 And so if he's calling this individual Lord, my Lord, in 00:12:32.37\00:12:37.10 fact, it must refer to someone other than his son Solomon. 00:12:37.13\00:12:41.35 Are you understanding what I'm saying? And so really this is a 00:12:41.38\00:12:45.05 Messianic prophecy. Now let me ask you, does this Messianic 00:12:45.08\00:12:49.53 prophecy talk about kingship, about rulership? Yes. In fact, 00:12:49.56\00:12:55.07 Jehovah is say to my Adonai, David says, the Lord is saying 00:12:55.10\00:13:01.25 to my Lord to do what? To sit at my right hand. Is he going to 00:13:01.28\00:13:07.46 sit on the throne? Yes he is. Sit at my right hand until I 00:13:07.49\00:13:13.60 make your enemies your footstool Who's going to make the enemies 00:13:13.64\00:13:18.45 the footstool. It is Jehovah Lord who is going to make the 00:13:18.48\00:13:24.31 enemies of Adonai or the enemies of the son of David in a 00:13:24.34\00:13:30.10 Messianic sense, to be under his feet. Now I want you to notice 00:13:30.14\00:13:37.58 also Psalm 110 and verse 4. This individual is not only a king 00:13:37.62\00:13:45.03 who sits with Jehovah on the throne because Jehovah says 00:13:45.06\00:13:49.85 to Adonai, sit at my right hand till I make all of your enemies 00:13:49.89\00:13:54.91 your footstool. Not only is he a king but I want you to notice 00:13:54.94\00:14:01.99 that he is also a priest. It says in Psalm 110 and verse 4: 00:14:02.03\00:14:07.43 Lord, that's the word Yahweh or the word Jehovah as we know it, 00:14:07.47\00:14:12.84 So let me ask you according to Psalm 110, is this Messianic 00:14:26.70\00:14:31.95 figure going to be both king and priest? He most certainly is. 00:14:31.98\00:14:36.43 And his priesthood is going to be according to the order of 00:14:36.46\00:14:41.70 whom? According to the order of Melchizedek. By the way, does 00:14:41.73\00:14:46.79 the king have a special Son who is going to sit with him on his 00:14:46.83\00:14:51.80 throne until all of the enemies are made subject to the Son 00:14:51.83\00:14:56.73 by the Father? Absolutely. Very important to remember this as we 00:14:56.77\00:15:01.15 move along in scripture. Now I would like to read another 00:15:01.18\00:15:06.00 passage from the Old Testament which is similar to what we just 00:15:06.04\00:15:10.26 noticed from Psalm 110. Zechariah chapter 6 and 00:15:10.29\00:15:15.84 verses 12 and 13. Zechariah chapter 6 and verses 12 and 13. 00:15:15.88\00:15:23.07 This is another Messianic prophecy, another prophecy 00:15:23.10\00:15:26.22 about the Messiah. And it's talking about another individual 00:15:26.26\00:15:30.73 who is going to be both king and priest and once again you have 00:15:30.77\00:15:35.61 two individuals involved, a Father and a Son. It says there 00:15:35.64\00:15:40.84 in Zechariah chapter 6 and verses 12 and 13 the following: 00:15:40.88\00:15:48.12 Then speak to him saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts saying 00:15:48.15\00:15:55.35 behold the man whose name is the Branch. From his place he shall 00:15:55.39\00:16:01.81 branch out and he shall build the temple of the Lord. Now let 00:16:01.84\00:16:07.03 me stop there for a minute. Who was it that built the temple of 00:16:07.06\00:16:12.22 the Lord in the Old Testament? It was Solomon. But is this 00:16:12.25\00:16:16.86 prophecy actually talking about Solomon? No. Just like Psalm 110 00:16:16.90\00:16:22.69 is not talking about Solomon, because in Psalm 110 actually 00:16:22.72\00:16:27.95 David is calling his son Lord. That means that his son is 00:16:27.99\00:16:32.11 greater than he is. It' can't be Solomon. It has to be a 00:16:32.14\00:16:36.19 Messianic figure so we're going to find here that the builder of 00:16:36.23\00:16:40.49 the temple of the Lord is not Solomon. It is one greater than 00:16:40.53\00:16:44.76 Solomon. And so he continues saying: He shall build the 00:16:44.79\00:16:49.13 temple of the Lord. He shall bear the glory and shall sit and 00:16:49.17\00:16:55.98 rule on his throne. Question: Is this Messianic figure, who is 00:16:56.02\00:17:01.93 called the Branch going to sit on a throne? He most certainly 00:17:01.97\00:17:07.59 is. He is going to sit and rule on his throne. But there's more. 00:17:07.63\00:17:13.79 Notice what it continues saying: So he shall be a priest on his 00:17:13.83\00:17:19.96 on his throne and the counsel of peach shall be between them 00:17:20.00\00:17:25.07 both. How many individuals are involved in this prophecy? 00:17:25.10\00:17:30.05 The word both means what? Two. How many are sitting on the 00:17:30.08\00:17:36.18 throne? Two. Is the Son both king and priest? Yes he is. 00:17:36.21\00:17:41.19 Now in the Old Testament you remember that the kingship 00:17:41.22\00:17:46.45 belonged to the tribe of Judah. And the priesthood belonged 00:17:46.48\00:17:52.25 to the tribe of Levi. But here we find an individual who bears 00:17:52.29\00:17:57.53 both functions or both offices. He sits as a king on the throne 00:17:57.56\00:18:02.77 with his Father and he also serves as a priest after the 00:18:02.80\00:18:09.01 order of Melchizedek. He is king and priest. He takes the two 00:18:09.05\00:18:13.29 functions which belong to the tribes in the Old Testament and 00:18:13.33\00:18:18.47 now he joins them in himself. Now the question is, who is 00:18:18.50\00:18:23.57 this Son of David who is greater than Solomon the literal son of 00:18:23.61\00:18:30.30 David? Well we don't have to guess because in the book of 00:18:30.33\00:18:35.57 Acts chapter 2 and verses 34-36 we find the answer given by 00:18:35.60\00:18:41.64 Peter on the day of Pentecost. Acts chapter 2 and verses 34-36. 00:18:41.68\00:18:47.69 We find here the Apostle Peter saying this:... 00:18:47.72\00:18:51.60 What prophecy is Peter quoting from? He is quoting for Psalm 00:19:09.71\00:19:17.09 110 and now notice the last part of the verse... 00:19:17.12\00:19:21.49 So in whom is the prophecy of Melchizedek fulfilled? It is 00:19:36.41\00:19:42.98 fulfilled in Jesus who becomes the King and the Priest of 00:19:43.01\00:19:49.55 Israel and I'm not referring about literal Israel. 00:19:49.58\00:19:53.05 I'm speaking about true spiritual Israel that joins 00:19:53.09\00:19:56.49 Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Now the greatest development of 00:19:56.53\00:20:01.55 the Melchizedek theme in the Bible is found in the book of 00:20:01.58\00:20:05.53 Hebrews chapter 7 and we're going to move through Hebrews 00:20:05.57\00:20:09.45 chapter 7. We're actually going to go through the whole chapter 00:20:09.49\00:20:13.42 and we're going to see what it has to teach us about Jesus as 00:20:13.45\00:20:17.72 the successor of Melchizedek or Jesus as the priest according 00:20:17.76\00:20:22.42 to the order of Melchizedek. Let's begin in Hebrews chapter 7 00:20:22.45\00:20:27.88 and verses 1-3 where we have an introduction to Melchizedek. 00:20:27.92\00:20:32.46 And by the way, in the book of Hebrews we're going to find some 00:20:32.49\00:20:37.00 additional details that are not mentioned in Genesis. 00:20:37.03\00:20:38.94 We're going to find that the Apostle Paul, whom I believe is 00:20:38.98\00:20:42.60 writing in the book of Hebrews actually takes the story from 00:20:42.63\00:20:47.19 Genesis 14 and he not only tells us certain things about 00:20:47.23\00:20:51.72 Melchizedek that are mentioned in Genesis 14, but he actually 00:20:51.76\00:20:55.40 tells us a few things that are not mentioned. In other words, 00:20:55.44\00:20:59.05 he not only takes into account what Genesis says, but he also 00:20:59.09\00:21:02.80 takes into account what Genesis does not say, what Genesis is 00:21:02.83\00:21:06.51 silent about. Notice Hebrews chapter 7 and verses 1-3: 00:21:06.54\00:21:14.14 Is that in harmony with what we read in Genesis? Absolutely. 00:21:20.49\00:21:23.85 He is king and is priest... 00:21:23.88\00:21:25.41 Now let me stop there just for a moment. The name Melchizedek 00:21:46.24\00:21:51.40 comes from two Hebrew words: The word Melech which means king 00:21:51.44\00:21:56.30 and the word sadach which means righteousness. So the name 00:21:56.33\00:22:00.33 actually means king of righteousness. Now according to 00:22:00.37\00:22:05.01 the New Testament, who is our righteousness? Christ is our 00:22:05.04\00:22:09.12 righteousness. You'll notice also that the Apostle Paul 00:22:09.15\00:22:14.29 explains here that Melchizedek is the king of peace. 00:22:14.32\00:22:19.39 Now according to scripture who is the Shiloh, the peace giver, 00:22:19.43\00:22:24.48 or the one who brings peace? It is Jesus Christ. Now notice 00:22:24.52\00:22:29.50 in verse 3 that the Apostle Paul is arguing from what is not said 00:22:29.54\00:22:34.68 in Genesis chapter 14 and this has confused a lot of people. 00:22:34.71\00:22:39.51 It says here in verse 3 about Melchizedek:... 00:22:39.54\00:22:43.33 Now what has confused people is they say this has to be some 00:22:59.52\00:23:02.94 divine figure. Melchizedek has to be a divine figure because 00:23:02.98\00:23:06.10 we're told here that he didn't have a father and he didn't have 00:23:06.14\00:23:09.23 a mother and he didn't have a genealogy. He didn't have a 00:23:09.26\00:23:12.80 beginning of days, he didn't have an ending of life so this 00:23:12.84\00:23:17.36 has to be Jesus or has to be a divine figure. Absolutely not. 00:23:17.40\00:23:21.98 What the Apostle Paul is arguing is that we do not have any 00:23:22.02\00:23:26.57 record of these things. In other words, do we know who 00:23:26.60\00:23:32.03 Melchizedek's father was? No. Do we know who is mother was? Do we 00:23:32.07\00:23:36.96 have any genealogy. No. Do we have any record of his beginning 00:23:36.99\00:23:41.85 of days or of his ending of days? Absolutely not. Now the 00:23:41.88\00:23:46.70 text makes it very clear that Melchizedek is not Christ 00:23:46.74\00:23:51.63 because the last part of the verse says but made like the 00:23:51.66\00:23:56.35 Son of God, remains a priest continually. Notice that 00:23:56.38\00:24:01.00 Melchizedek is not the Son of God; he is made like the Son of 00:24:01.04\00:24:05.85 God. In other words, Melchizedek is a type of Christ. He is a 00:24:05.88\00:24:10.30 representative of Christ. He is an illustration of the work of 00:24:10.34\00:24:14.73 Jesus Christ. Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:24:14.76\00:24:17.59 So when it says that he was without father, without mother, 00:24:17.63\00:24:20.96 without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor 00:24:20.99\00:24:24.25 end of life it's not saying that he had no beginning and he had 00:24:24.29\00:24:28.09 no end. What's it's saying is that we have no record of this. 00:24:28.12\00:24:31.89 By the way, did the priesthood of Aaron, the Levitical 00:24:31.92\00:24:36.81 priesthood, depend on keeping a very careful record of 00:24:36.84\00:24:41.66 genealogies. Absolutely. Because you had to be a member of the 00:24:41.70\00:24:45.87 tribe of what? Of Levi, in order to be a priest. But what the 00:24:45.90\00:24:50.72 Apostle Paul is arguing here is that Melchizedek had a right to 00:24:50.75\00:24:55.98 the priesthood not because he was of a certain genealogy but 00:24:56.01\00:25:00.67 because his priesthood was of a different order. Are you 00:25:00.71\00:25:05.30 understanding what I'm saying? Now let's jump to verse 4, verse 00:25:05.34\00:25:10.60 4 and actually through verse 10 we're going to find that the 00:25:10.63\00:25:15.82 emphasis is that Melchizedek was greater than Abraham. And I must 00:25:15.86\00:25:21.12 warn you that the argumentation here becomes a little bit tricky 00:25:21.16\00:25:25.50 so you have to kind of stick with me on this. You know don't 00:25:25.53\00:25:30.01 start thinking about what you're going to do tomorrow or start 00:25:30.04\00:25:33.58 day dreaming because I'm going to lose you. The Apostle Paul 00:25:33.62\00:25:37.50 uses some very strange logic in this passage. It says there 00:25:37.53\00:25:41.38 in verse 4... 00:25:41.41\00:25:42.44 Question: Who is greater, the one who gives the tithe of the 00:25:53.87\00:25:58.48 one who receives the tithe? The argument of the Apostle Paul is 00:25:58.51\00:26:03.09 that the receiver of the tithes is greater than the giver. 00:26:03.12\00:26:06.18 And for this reason Melchizedek is greater than Abraham because 00:26:06.22\00:26:11.23 Abraham gave him the tithes. Notice verse 5... 00:26:11.26\00:26:15.21 Now did the Levites receive the tithes? Yes they did. Did the 00:26:32.90\00:26:36.71 Levites come from Abraham? Did they descend from Abraham? 00:26:36.74\00:26:41.46 Yes they did. So the argument is that when Abraham gave 00:26:41.50\00:26:46.02 Melchizedek the tithes because the Levites descend from 00:26:46.05\00:26:50.50 Abraham the Levites Melchizedek tithes. I don't know if you are 00:26:50.54\00:26:55.55 following what I am saying. It's saying that actually Levi was in 00:26:55.59\00:26:59.52 the loins of Abraham. That means that he's going to descend from 00:26:59.55\00:27:03.45 Abraham. So when Abraham gave tithe to Melchizedek, the 00:27:03.48\00:27:07.21 Levites gave tithes to Melchizedek through Abraham 00:27:07.24\00:27:10.90 their representative and this makes the Levites also lesser 00:27:10.94\00:27:17.36 that Melchizedek. Are you understanding what the 00:27:17.39\00:27:19.82 argumentation is? Now let's go once again here to verse 5. 00:27:19.86\00:27:23.29 And indeed those who are the sons of Levi who received 00:27:23.32\00:27:26.72 the priesthood have a commandment to receive 00:27:26.75\00:27:29.02 tithes from the people according to the law, that is 00:27:29.06\00:27:31.43 the law of the priesthood, that is from their brethren 00:27:31.47\00:27:33.81 Now not only is Melchizedek greater than Abraham because 00:27:52.89\00:27:58.68 Abraham gives him the tithes, but Melchizedek is also greater 00:27:58.72\00:28:02.91 than Abraham because Melchizedek blesses Abraham and the one who 00:28:02.95\00:28:07.06 blesses is greater than the one who is blessed. Notice what we 00:28:07.10\00:28:11.18 find in verse 7... 00:28:11.21\00:28:12.47 Do you understand the logic that the Apostle Paul is using? He's 00:28:49.55\00:28:53.70 saying that the priesthood of Melchizedek is greater than the 00:28:53.73\00:28:57.85 priesthood of Aaron or the priesthood of the Levites. 00:28:57.88\00:29:02.43 And it's true for two reasons. Number one: Because the Levites 00:29:02.47\00:29:07.63 through Abraham gave tithes to whom? To Melchizedek. And second 00:29:07.66\00:29:12.79 Abraham and also the Levites through Abraham were what? 00:29:12.82\00:29:17.39 Were blessed by Melchizedek and the one who is blessed is lesser 00:29:17.43\00:29:23.42 than the one who blesses. Raise your hand if you're 00:29:23.45\00:29:26.32 understanding what I'm saying. This is a very important part of 00:29:26.36\00:29:29.56 the argument of the Apostle Paul. So in verses 4-10 the 00:29:29.59\00:29:35.83 Apostle Paul is emphasizing that Melchizedek was greater than 00:29:35.87\00:29:40.72 Abraham and he was greater than the priesthood of the Levites. 00:29:40.75\00:29:45.00 This is very foundational for what he's going to come to in a 00:29:45.04\00:29:49.26 moment. Now in verses 11-13, we're going to find that in 00:29:49.29\00:29:55.88 order for Christ who was the descendent of Melchizedek to be 00:29:55.91\00:30:02.04 a priest, he had to be a priest from a different order than the 00:30:02.07\00:30:07.02 Levites because Jesus was not from the tribe of Levi. Jesus 00:30:07.05\00:30:11.28 was from the tribe of what? Of Judah. Did Jesus have the right 00:30:11.31\00:30:15.96 to be a king? Yes he did. Did Jesus have right to be a priest 00:30:15.99\00:30:20.43 according to the order of the Levites? Absolutely not because 00:30:20.46\00:30:24.85 he was from a different tribe. And so Jesus had to have a 00:30:24.88\00:30:28.87 different priesthood than the Levitical priesthood or else he 00:30:28.90\00:30:32.86 could not be a priest. Now notice Hebrews chapter 7 and 00:30:32.89\00:30:37.16 verse 11... 00:30:37.19\00:30:40.17 it's not talking about the 10 commandments. It's the law about 00:30:50.03\00:30:52.74 the priesthood in its context. 00:30:52.77\00:30:56.00 The law here is not the 10 commandment law it is the law 00:31:12.82\00:31:16.54 of the what? Of the priesthood. The issue that is being 00:31:16.58\00:31:21.72 discussed here is the law of the priesthood. What gave priests 00:31:21.75\00:31:24.69 in the Old Testament the right to officiate. It has nothing 00:31:24.73\00:31:28.30 whatsoever to do with the 10 commandments. It's not saying 00:31:28.33\00:31:31.83 that the 10 commandments had to be changed. It's the law of the 00:31:31.87\00:31:35.55 priesthood which needed to be changed. Now I need to explain 00:31:35.59\00:31:38.81 a little word that we find here which is very important. 00:31:38.84\00:31:42.03 The word perfection. If perfection were through the 00:31:42.06\00:31:46.12 Levitical priesthood. This is not talking about moral 00:31:46.15\00:31:50.14 character perfection. In the book of Hebrews when it speaks 00:31:50.18\00:31:54.86 about perfection it's talking about the fulfillment of that 00:31:54.90\00:31:59.29 which was in figure in the Old Testament. Let me explain what I 00:31:59.33\00:32:03.18 mean. In the Old Testament, when the Israelites sacrificed an 00:32:03.22\00:32:07.86 animal did that truly remove their sin? No. It was only on 00:32:07.89\00:32:12.59 the basis of the future promise of the coming Christ that that 00:32:12.63\00:32:16.95 sin would be removed. When the priest went into the sanctuary 00:32:16.98\00:32:21.14 and interceded for the people did the priest actually do the 00:32:21.18\00:32:24.96 interceding or was it Jesus in the Old Testament who was doing 00:32:24.99\00:32:28.88 the interceding? It was Jesus. But we need to understand that 00:32:28.91\00:32:32.88 in order for Jesus to stand as our priest, he had to offer a 00:32:32.91\00:32:36.83 sacrifice first. And so when the Apostle Paul says that if 00:32:36.86\00:32:40.67 perfection was possible through the Levitical priesthood there 00:32:40.71\00:32:44.11 would not be need for another priesthood. He's not talking 00:32:44.15\00:32:48.22 about moral perfection. He's talking about the fact that the 00:32:48.26\00:32:52.10 Old Testament system did not actually remove sin, the priests 00:32:52.14\00:32:55.47 of the Old Testament were not the true priesthood. When Jesus 00:32:55.51\00:32:59.39 came the true sacrifice was offered and the true priesthood 00:32:59.43\00:33:03.42 of Jesus was instituted. Are you understanding? In other words, 00:33:03.45\00:33:07.41 the Old Testament system was inadequate. The New Testament 00:33:07.44\00:33:11.11 system because everything that the Old Testament pointed to was 00:33:11.15\00:33:14.43 fulfilled in Christ, it's much more adequate and actually 00:33:14.46\00:33:18.65 fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament. Now why would 00:33:18.69\00:33:22.22 there have to be a change in the law of the priesthood? 00:33:22.26\00:33:26.22 Why would it be necessary you know when Jesus comes as the 00:33:26.26\00:33:30.15 priest to change the law of the priesthood of the Old Testament? 00:33:30.19\00:33:33.77 Well the fact is that I've already mentioned that Jesus 00:33:33.80\00:33:37.55 could not legally be a priest according to the Levites. 00:33:37.58\00:33:41.26 In fact, it was a very serious thing for an individual to claim 00:33:41.30\00:33:45.40 to be a priest and not be from the proper genealogy. He could 00:33:45.44\00:33:49.19 actually be destroyed from among the people if he claimed to be a 00:33:49.23\00:33:53.35 priest and he did not belong to the tribe of Levi. So Jesus did 00:33:53.38\00:33:56.92 not have a right to be priest according to the order of Aaron; 00:33:56.96\00:34:00.74 therefore, the law of the succession of the priesthood had 00:34:00.77\00:34:04.69 to be changed and Jesus had to be a priest according to a 00:34:04.72\00:34:08.24 different order. Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:34:08.28\00:34:11.73 Now let's actually continue in verse 14, Hebrews chapter 7 and 00:34:11.77\00:34:17.38 verse 14. Here the Apostle Paul develops this thought... 00:34:17.41\00:34:20.82 Did anybody from Judah officiate at the altar? Did they have a 00:34:35.98\00:34:40.61 right to officiate as priests. No. So is Jesus from a different 00:34:40.65\00:34:45.60 tribe? Sure. In order for Jesus to be a priest, must the law of 00:34:45.64\00:34:50.32 the priesthood change, the law of succession according to the 00:34:50.35\00:34:55.00 fleshly commandment as we're going to find. Absolutely. 00:34:55.03\00:34:57.64 It says in verse 14... 00:34:57.67\00:35:00.37 What is the law of the fleshly commandment? It's the 00:35:20.84\00:35:23.55 commandment that says that priests must be from what? 00:35:23.58\00:35:26.26 From the tribe of Levi... 00:35:26.29\00:35:28.11 Because as Melchizedek we don't have any record of his beginning 00:35:31.67\00:35:35.61 or his ending of days, we don't have a record of his father and 00:35:35.64\00:35:39.55 his mother, his priesthood continues so also with Jesus. 00:35:39.58\00:35:44.22 Jesus is a priest according to a different order. He has the 00:35:44.25\00:35:48.85 right to a priesthood that is not included in the priesthood 00:35:48.89\00:35:53.46 of Aaron in the Levitical priesthood. Actually in fact, 00:35:53.49\00:35:57.39 if you look at the Old Testament you'll discover that Jesus gets 00:35:57.43\00:36:00.81 his right to be a priest from Melchizedek. But he gets a 00:36:00.84\00:36:05.47 description of his functions as priest from Aaron. In other 00:36:05.51\00:36:09.87 words, everything that Jesus does as our priest is prefigured 00:36:09.91\00:36:13.77 by the priesthood of Aaron. We don't know very much about what 00:36:13.80\00:36:17.54 Melchizedek did in officiating as a priest, but we know a lot 00:36:17.57\00:36:21.51 about what priests did in the Levitical system and so Jesus 00:36:21.55\00:36:25.64 gets a description of his functions from the priesthood of 00:36:25.68\00:36:29.70 Levi or from the priesthood of Aaron while he gets the right to 00:36:29.74\00:36:34.85 his priesthood from the priesthood of Melchizedek. 00:36:34.88\00:36:38.27 Now notice verses 18 and 19. Actually let's go to verse 17 00:36:38.31\00:36:43.39 first. Let's not skip that one. It's very important. 00:36:43.42\00:36:46.95 It says there... 00:36:46.98\00:36:48.26 Where is that quotation from? From Psalm 110 and verse 4. 00:36:48.30\00:37:00.00 Is that a messianic prophecy, Psalm 110, verse 4? Is it 00:37:00.03\00:37:03.91 applied directly to Christ? Absolutely. So according to 00:37:03.95\00:37:07.76 whose order is Jesus a priest? He's a priest according to the 00:37:07.80\00:37:12.03 order of Melchizedek. It combines the prophecy of 00:37:12.06\00:37:15.34 Genesis 14 and the prophecy of Psalm 110. He does not come from 00:37:15.38\00:37:19.45 Aaron, then he would not have the right to do that, so the law 00:37:19.49\00:37:23.53 of the priesthood must be changed and he must belong to a 00:37:23.56\00:37:26.37 different order. Notice verses 18 and 19... 00:37:26.40\00:37:32.01 Which former commandment. I guess this is talking about the 00:37:37.24\00:37:40.56 Sabbath commandment right. How can you ever in the world say 00:37:40.60\00:37:43.89 that this is talking about the 10 commandments and yet 00:37:43.92\00:37:45.79 Christians will used this verse, they'll take it out of the 00:37:45.83\00:37:48.32 context and they'll say this shows that the Sabbath 00:37:48.35\00:37:51.99 commandment was annulled. It's talking about priesthoods. 00:37:52.03\00:37:55.20 It has nothing to do with the 10 commandments... 00:37:55.23\00:37:58.42 You couldn't profit because Jesus couldn't be a priest 00:38:05.65\00:38:09.17 according to that order... 00:38:09.20\00:38:11.07 What does that mean that the law made nothing perfect? 00:38:13.29\00:38:17.06 Did the priesthood of Aaron actually take away sin? No. 00:38:17.09\00:38:20.79 Did it legally remove sin? No. Did it give the priests a legal 00:38:20.83\00:38:24.59 right to represent Israel? No, because they were sinful men. 00:38:24.62\00:38:29.67 And so it was unprofitable and weak so it says for the law made 00:38:29.70\00:38:34.72 nothing perfect... 00:38:34.75\00:38:36.07 In the Old Testament system the people could actually not draw 00:38:43.24\00:38:46.78 near to God. There were barriers because of the priesthood. 00:38:46.81\00:38:50.50 But now we have access to the throne of God through Jesus 00:38:50.53\00:38:55.65 Christ the true priest according to the order of 00:38:55.68\00:38:58.68 Melchizedek. And now I want you to notice the priesthood of 00:38:58.72\00:39:03.31 Aaron was something that was inherited because of your 00:39:03.34\00:39:09.79 lineage. But the priesthood of Melchizedek was by a divine 00:39:09.82\00:39:16.24 oath. Notice Hebrews chapter 7 and verses 20-24. It says... 00:39:16.28\00:39:21.24 Inasmuch as he was not made priest without an oath. In other 00:39:21.27\00:39:26.20 words Jesus was not made priest without an oath... 00:39:26.23\00:39:28.64 Who is they? The Levitical priests. They did it by lineage, 00:39:31.68\00:39:36.68 not by an oath... 00:39:36.71\00:39:37.74 Is this a far greater priesthood when it involves an oath from 00:39:53.06\00:39:57.14 God the Father saying to Jesus you are a priest forever after 00:39:57.18\00:40:01.05 the order of Melchizedek rather than the weak commandment that 00:40:01.09\00:40:04.69 you inherit the priesthood because of your lineage. That's 00:40:04.72\00:40:08.25 what the apostle Paul is saying. And then notice; let's go once 00:40:08.29\00:40:13.40 again to the quotation of Psalm The Lord has sworn and will 00:40:13.44\00:40:18.52 not relent, you are a priest forever according to the order 00:40:18.55\00:40:23.02 of Melchizedek... 00:40:23.05\00:40:24.08 Why is Jesus a surety of a better covenant than this old 00:40:31.12\00:40:34.97 Levitical covenant. It's because Jesus fulfills the Levitical 00:40:35.01\00:40:40.10 covenant and Jesus becomes a true priest who can represent us 00:40:40.14\00:40:44.95 before God. Jesus actually has the right to be our intercessor 00:40:44.98\00:40:49.90 because he is God and he is man and he is perfect. Notice also 00:40:49.94\00:40:54.83 verse 23... 00:40:54.86\00:40:56.40 Was the priesthood of the Levites a changeable priesthood? 00:41:11.33\00:41:15.12 Of course, because the priests what? The priests died. 00:41:15.16\00:41:18.88 They could not continue. Is the priesthood of Jesus changeless, 00:41:18.92\00:41:23.90 enduring and forever? Absolutely because as Melchizedek we have 00:41:23.93\00:41:28.59 no record of his origin or of his destiny. Jesus according to 00:41:28.63\00:41:32.99 that priesthood we have also the knowledge that Jesus had 00:41:33.02\00:41:37.55 no origin and Jesus is obviously not going to have any end. 00:41:37.59\00:41:42.09 So what is said about Melchizedek on a lesser 00:41:42.12\00:41:45.42 scale is said about Jesus on a much greater scale because 00:41:45.46\00:41:50.08 Jesus is far greater than Melchizedek and so the process 00:41:50.12\00:41:54.77 is Melchizedek is greater that Abraham and Levi but Jesus 00:41:54.80\00:41:59.90 is greater than whom. Jesus is greater than Melchizedek. Now 00:41:59.94\00:42:04.53 there's another reason why Jesus is greater than the priesthood 00:42:04.57\00:42:09.05 of Aaron. Not only because the priesthood of Melchizedek was 00:42:09.08\00:42:13.53 by an oath, but also because Jesus is a sinless priest. 00:42:13.56\00:42:19.82 Notice verses 26-28 of Hebrews chapter 7. Verses 26-28. It says 00:42:19.86\00:42:29.18 Is the priesthood of Jesus eternal and unchanging? Yes. 00:42:41.92\00:42:46.42 And so we can always come to him and know that he represents 00:42:46.46\00:42:51.07 us before his father. That could not be said about the priesthood 00:42:51.11\00:42:55.51 of the Levites because they were prevented by death and 00:42:55.54\00:42:58.69 they were prevented by their sinfulness from fully fulfilling 00:42:58.73\00:43:02.19 the law of the priesthood. Now notice what it continues saying 00:43:02.22\00:43:05.65 in verse 26... 00:43:05.68\00:43:07.12 How is Jesus different than the Levitical priests. He is what?.. 00:43:23.27\00:43:27.78 Holy, harmless, undefiled and separate from sinners and has 00:43:27.81\00:43:32.92 become higher than the heavens. Now let's stop there for a 00:43:32.95\00:43:38.03 moment. Somebody says well Pastor Bohr, it says here 00:43:38.06\00:43:42.13 separate from sinners. So how can Jesus represent us if he's 00:43:42.17\00:43:47.18 separate from sinners. Let me give you an illustration so that 00:43:47.21\00:43:53.88 we can understand. If you were sinking in quick sand would you 00:43:53.91\00:43:59.84 rather have someone on solid ground with a rope in his hand 00:43:59.88\00:44:05.16 or would you rather have that individual in the quick sand 00:44:05.19\00:44:10.77 with you sympathizing with your experience? (Chuckles) I think 00:44:10.81\00:44:16.36 you would say I would rather have someone on solid ground 00:44:16.39\00:44:19.99 with a rope who can throw the rope. You see if Jesus was a 00:44:20.03\00:44:24.50 sinner just like us he would need a redeemer, he would need a 00:44:24.53\00:44:28.60 sacrifice, he would need a priest to represent him. But the 00:44:28.64\00:44:32.85 fact is that he's separated from sinners in the sense that he 00:44:32.88\00:44:37.27 never committed sin. He did live among sinners, he sympathized 00:44:37.30\00:44:41.11 with the sinners, he understood the sinners, he understood the 00:44:41.15\00:44:45.08 temptations that we have but he never sinned. So he can identify 00:44:45.12\00:44:48.81 with us but he's on solid ground and he can throw us the rope and 00:44:48.84\00:44:52.50 he can pull us up and he can save us from the mire of sin. 00:44:52.53\00:44:56.28 Notice verse 27. Who does not need... 00:44:56.31\00:45:01.20 So the priests in the Old Testament you know they kept 00:45:16.39\00:45:18.90 offering sacrifices and sacrifices and sacrifices and 00:45:18.93\00:45:21.37 sacrifices. With Jesus no way. All he has to do is offer what? 00:45:21.41\00:45:26.73 One sacrifice and that qualifies him to become our priest. 00:45:26.77\00:45:32.06 By the way this is very important for some people who 00:45:32.09\00:45:35.87 belong to a certain church whose name I won't mention that 00:45:35.91\00:45:40.76 teaches that in the religious service Jesus is sacrificed anew 00:45:40.79\00:45:46.15 each time and the sacrifice of Christ is repeated time and 00:45:46.19\00:45:51.48 again, time and again, each time that the service is performed. 00:45:51.52\00:45:56.43 The book of Hebrews tells us very clearly that Jesus died 00:45:56.46\00:46:01.02 once for all and in this way he was qualified to be our priest. 00:46:01.06\00:46:07.84 Verse 28:... 00:46:07.87\00:46:09.57 Which law is this that appoints this. What law is it, the 10 00:46:14.91\00:46:19.93 commandments, right? No. It's the law of the priesthood... 00:46:19.96\00:46:24.95 In other words, as a result of what he did he has been 00:46:41.57\00:46:44.97 qualified forever to be our high priest. Doesn't that comfort you 00:46:45.01\00:46:50.09 to know that we have an elder brother sitting on the throne as 00:46:50.13\00:46:55.18 king but the king also represents us as priest? 00:46:55.21\00:46:58.35 I'll tell you what, that's a very comforting thought that he 00:46:58.39\00:47:01.89 doesn't come like the Levites and repeat the same sacrifices 00:47:01.93\00:47:05.45 over and over again, that he wasn't full of sin and therefore 00:47:05.48\00:47:09.06 needed an intercessor and a sacrifice for himself; that his 00:47:09.09\00:47:12.64 priesthood is not interrupted by death but that he's a priest 00:47:12.67\00:47:16.19 forever and he has absolute power to represent us before 00:47:16.22\00:47:19.68 God. That's a marvelous thought. Now let's summarize what we have 00:47:19.72\00:47:24.19 studied so far. Jesus in eternity shared the throne with 00:47:24.22\00:47:31.05 his Father. We found that in Zechariah chapter 6 verses 12 00:47:31.09\00:47:36.54 and 13. They both sat on the throne. The counsel of peace was 00:47:36.57\00:47:41.10 between them both. In other words, in a certain sense Jesus 00:47:41.13\00:47:45.59 has been king and Jesus has been priest at least with respect to 00:47:45.63\00:47:51.07 the promise of salvation which was made in eternity from 00:47:51.10\00:47:54.94 eternity. In a certain sense, Jesus is a priest from eternity. 00:47:54.98\00:47:58.51 Not in actual coming and being sacrificed and actually 00:47:58.54\00:48:02.45 resurrecting from the dead and going to represent us before God 00:48:02.49\00:48:05.94 but he's actually been the go between the Father and 00:48:05.98\00:48:10.76 us. Jesus actually was the one who created us. So we find that 00:48:10.80\00:48:16.25 Jesus actually is a king and a priest forever. Furthermore, 00:48:16.29\00:48:21.71 we have noticed that Jesus was made priest by an oath by his 00:48:21.79\00:48:26.90 Father which was repeated in Psalm 110 but which actually was 00:48:26.94\00:48:31.72 made by the Father in eternity. The Father said if man should 00:48:31.76\00:48:36.80 sin you will be the sacrifice and you will be the priest to 00:48:36.83\00:48:41.93 bring salvation to those who sin. We find that Jesus combines 00:48:41.96\00:48:47.25 both offices, the office of priest and the office of king. 00:48:47.29\00:48:53.31 The sacrifice of Jesus actually forgives sin once and for all. 00:48:53.35\00:48:59.34 There's no need for any other sacrifice. And because his 00:48:59.37\00:49:03.53 sacrifice was once for all Jesus is qualified forever to 00:49:03.57\00:49:07.57 represent us before the Father because he ever lives to 00:49:07.61\00:49:11.54 intercede for us. Now let me ask you, has Jesus delivered us from 00:49:11.58\00:49:18.87 our enemies. You remember the original story in Genesis 00:49:18.90\00:49:23.33 chapter 14. By the way, this idea is picked up in Psalm 110 00:49:23.36\00:49:27.76 where it says until I make your enemies your what? 00:49:27.79\00:49:31.00 Your footstool. See, it's picking up on the idea the small 00:49:31.04\00:49:34.87 scale model of Genesis 14 where the enemies are overcome and 00:49:34.91\00:49:39.79 the hostages are what? The hostages are released. Question: 00:49:39.82\00:49:45.11 Did Jesus destroy our spiritual enemies by his death on the 00:49:45.14\00:49:50.47 cross? Yes he did. Did he deliver spiritual hostages from 00:49:50.51\00:49:55.32 bondage to sin? He most certainly did. In fact, let's 00:49:55.36\00:50:00.10 notice how this is picked up in Luke chapter 1 and verses 68-71. 00:50:00.14\00:50:05.65 Luke chapter 1 and verses 68-71: This is a very interesting 00:50:05.68\00:50:12.24 passage where Jesus is taken to the temple and I want you to 00:50:12.28\00:50:18.54 notice what words are spoken here and these words are spoken, 00:50:18.57\00:50:24.80 by the way, by Zacharias. It says there in verse 68 the 00:50:24.83\00:50:31.87 following: Blessed is the Lord God of Israel for he has visited 00:50:31.91\00:50:39.75 and redeemed his people and has raised up a what? A horn, by the 00:50:39.79\00:50:46.60 way that refers to kingship, a horn of salvation for us in the 00:50:46.64\00:50:51.77 house of his servant what? David There you have the connection 00:50:51.81\00:50:57.05 with Psalm 110. As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets 00:50:57.09\00:51:01.45 who have been since the world began that we should be saved 00:51:01.48\00:51:06.56 from whom? From our enemies and from the hand of all who hate 00:51:06.59\00:51:11.89 us. Was Jesus going to be the deliverer from our enemies. Yes. 00:51:11.93\00:51:16.48 Not primarily physical enemies but what? Spiritual enemies. 00:51:16.52\00:51:21.81 The devil, his angels, sin, the flesh, the world. By the way, 00:51:21.84\00:51:26.76 did Jesus release the captives. You can read in Luke chapter 4. 00:51:26.80\00:51:31.07 It says that Jesus came to release the captives. This is at 00:51:31.11\00:51:34.92 the beginning of his ministry and then of course you have 00:51:34.96\00:51:38.70 Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 8 where Jesus is ascending and it 00:51:38.74\00:51:42.74 says that he led captivity captive. Just like Abraham 00:51:42.77\00:51:48.16 went and he delivered Lot and he delivered the captives and 00:51:48.20\00:51:52.42 defeated the enemies and brought them back. Jesus the priest 00:51:52.45\00:51:56.64 according to the order of Melchizedek fulfills this 00:51:56.67\00:51:59.27 spiritually with his people. By the way, Hebrews chapter 7 00:51:59.31\00:52:03.64 emphasizes that Jesus is a special priest because he is 00:52:03.67\00:52:08.83 the Son in a special sense because he has a sinless 00:52:08.87\00:52:13.96 character and because he is confirmed by an oath from his 00:52:14.00\00:52:18.77 Father. Do you remember in Genesis chapter 14 that when the 00:52:18.81\00:52:24.55 victory was won bread and wine were brought out by this priest? 00:52:24.59\00:52:29.53 The priest of the Most High God. Why do you suppose bread and 00:52:29.57\00:52:34.99 wine would be brought out? Well let me ask this. What is the 00:52:35.02\00:52:40.90 commemoration that Jesus left of his victory on the cross of 00:52:40.93\00:52:46.78 Calvary? You know this. Jesus himself before he died 00:52:46.81\00:52:51.23 instituted in the church a special ceremony. It's called 00:52:51.26\00:52:55.18 the Lord's supper. And the Apostle Paul repeats this in 00:52:55.22\00:52:58.42 I Corinthians chapter 11 that the night that Jesus was 00:52:58.46\00:53:01.59 betrayed that Jesus took what? Jesus took bread and then he 00:53:01.63\00:53:05.42 took after this the cup which we know had grape juice 00:53:05.45\00:53:09.13 unfermented grape juice. And, in fact, the Apostle Paul 00:53:09.16\00:53:12.44 says that when you partake of this bread and when you drink 00:53:12.47\00:53:16.40 of this cup you announce the death of Jesus Christ until he 00:53:16.43\00:53:21.14 what? Until he comes. So the bringing out of bread and wine 00:53:21.17\00:53:26.74 by Melchizedek is actually a prefiguring of what Jesus does 00:53:26.78\00:53:31.58 offering his body represented by the bread and offering his 00:53:31.61\00:53:36.38 blood represented by the grape juice as symbols of his 00:53:36.41\00:53:41.05 salvation. It's actually a prefiguring of the Lord's 00:53:41.09\00:53:45.66 supper. It is a commemoration of the victory of Jesus on the 00:53:45.69\00:53:50.17 cross, the victory over the spiritual enemies and he who 00:53:50.20\00:53:54.64 released the captives from captivity to Satan, from 00:53:54.68\00:53:58.17 captivity to the world and from captivity to sin. Now the final 00:53:58.21\00:54:05.29 fulfillment of this prophecy of Psalm 110 is still to take place 00:54:05.32\00:54:12.37 I would like to read in the short period that we still have 00:54:12.40\00:54:17.42 left from I Corinthians chapter 15 and verses 24-28. And here 00:54:17.46\00:54:21.89 the Apostle Paul gets a little complicated in the way in which 00:54:21.93\00:54:27.68 he writes and so I am going to interpret as we go along. Once 00:54:27.71\00:54:33.43 again I Corinthians chapter 15 verses 24-28. The final 00:54:33.46\00:54:36.62 fulfillment of Genesis chapter 14. It says here: Then comes 00:54:36.66\00:54:44.79 the end when he, that is Jesus, I'm going to put in the names of 00:54:44.83\00:54:50.03 the he's, who the he's represent here because there are a lot of 00:54:50.07\00:54:54.61 he's and you get kind of confused which he refers to 00:54:54.65\00:54:59.27 whom. And so it says that he, that is Jesus, delivers the 00:54:59.31\00:55:03.29 kingdom to God the Father. Who's going to deliver the kingdom to 00:55:03.32\00:55:07.91 God the Father? Jesus is. When he, now it's the Father, when 00:55:07.94\00:55:12.90 he, that is the Father, puts an end to all rule and all authority and all power. 00:55:12.93\00:55:17.44 By the way, who gave the victory to Abraham? Listen, if you read 00:55:17.48\00:55:21.95 the story, it had to be God who gave him the victory. 00:55:21.98\00:55:25.10 And Melchizedek comes to commemorate the victory, but 00:55:25.13\00:55:28.18 the victory was given by God. And so it says here, when he, 00:55:28.21\00:55:33.05 the Father, puts an end to all rule and all authority and all 00:55:33.08\00:55:38.36 power for he, that is Jesus, must reign till he, that is the 00:55:38.40\00:55:43.46 Father has put all enemies under his feet. When will all the 00:55:43.50\00:55:48.82 enemies be put under the feet of Jesus? At the end according 00:55:48.86\00:55:54.15 to this. And then it says the last enemy that will be 00:55:54.18\00:55:57.00 destroyed is what? Is death. Verse 27: For He, that is the 00:55:57.03\00:56:02.10 Father, has put all things under his, that is Jesus', feet. 00:56:02.13\00:56:06.07 But when he says all things are put under him that is under 00:56:06.11\00:56:10.21 Jesus, it is evident that the Father, or that he, which is the 00:56:10.25\00:56:14.24 Father, who put all things under him, that is under Jesus, is 00:56:14.28\00:56:18.49 accepted. Now when all things are made subject to him, that is 00:56:18.53\00:56:22.54 to Jesus. By the way, who makes them subject to him? The father 00:56:22.57\00:56:27.41 does. Then the Son himself will also be subject to him, that is 00:56:27.45\00:56:32.25 to the Father, who put all things under him, that is under 00:56:32.29\00:56:37.37 Jesus, that God, that is God the Father, may be all in all. 00:56:37.41\00:56:42.03 The final fulfillment and Jesus will be our priest forever in 00:56:42.07\00:56:46.59 the kingdom. He will be one of us. He will conserve his human 00:56:46.62\00:56:51.11 nature and we will have communion with him face to face 00:56:51.14\00:56:54.47 as our Brother who came to save and to redeem us. 00:56:54.50\00:56:58.88 Isn't this a marvelous message that God gives all the way back 00:56:58.91\00:57:04.45 in the book of Genesis. He's actually giving a prophecy 00:57:04.48\00:57:09.28 prefiguring the coming of our great High Priest, Jesus Christ, 00:57:09.31\00:57:14.54 our king who will sit with the Father on his throne and the 00:57:14.58\00:57:19.78 honor and the glory be to the Father forever and ever. 00:57:19.81\00:57:23.77
