Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:01:15.04\00:01:16.47 Father in heaven, what a joy it is 00:01:17.51\00:01:19.77 to come into Your presence 00:01:19.91\00:01:21.44 to study Your Holy Word. 00:01:21.68\00:01:23.28 We ask that as we study the story of Joseph 00:01:24.01\00:01:26.85 as a type or a symbol of the life of Christ 00:01:27.92\00:01:31.62 that Your Holy Spirit will be with us to instruct us. 00:01:32.42\00:01:35.56 Teach us the lessons which will be useful 00:01:36.09\00:01:38.99 in our personal walk with Jesus, 00:01:39.13\00:01:41.16 and we thank you for the promise of Your presence. 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.13 In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen. 00:01:44.47\00:01:48.47 It was the afternoon 00:01:50.24\00:01:51.87 of the resurrection, 00:01:51.91\00:01:53.58 and 2 of the followers of Jesus, 00:01:54.44\00:01:57.35 not of His 12 disciples but two of the followers of Jesus 00:01:57.38\00:02:01.42 were walking to a little village relatively near Jerusalem 00:02:01.55\00:02:07.12 called Emmaus. 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.39 And as these two men were walking to Emmaus 00:02:09.62\00:02:13.76 Jesus - who had resurrected from the dead that morning - 00:02:14.83\00:02:18.97 actually caught up to them and started walking with them. 00:02:19.20\00:02:24.34 You can find this story in Luke chapter 24. 00:02:24.77\00:02:29.08 And we're going to read a couple of verses from there 00:02:29.41\00:02:31.71 in a few moments, but I want you to catch the picture. 00:02:31.85\00:02:34.25 And so Jesus catches up to these two men that are walking 00:02:35.22\00:02:38.42 to Emmaus and He says to them: 00:02:38.45\00:02:41.19 "What is it that you're talking about? 00:02:41.32\00:02:43.96 And why are your faces so sad? " 00:02:44.19\00:02:47.60 And, of course, the two men look at Jesus 00:02:47.93\00:02:52.60 and if they lived today they probably would have said 00:02:52.73\00:02:56.24 "What planet have you been on for the last three days? 00:02:56.57\00:03:00.61 Haven't you known what has happened 00:03:00.84\00:03:04.61 in the city of Jerusalem during these last three days? 00:03:04.65\00:03:08.68 Impossible that you shouldn't know about it if you were 00:03:09.82\00:03:12.95 in this region or in this area. " 00:03:12.99\00:03:15.36 And then in Luke chapter 24 and verse 21 00:03:16.26\00:03:19.39 we hear the disappointment of these men. 00:03:19.63\00:03:23.10 Actually I want to read Luke chapter 24 00:03:23.33\00:03:26.10 and verse 21. You can almost hear it in their voice 00:03:26.23\00:03:30.91 as we read this verse. 00:03:31.14\00:03:33.24 It says there in verse 21: 00:03:33.38\00:03:35.78 "But we were hoping that it was He 00:03:36.11\00:03:40.62 who was going to redeem Israel. 00:03:40.75\00:03:44.32 Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day 00:03:44.55\00:03:48.49 since these things happened. " 00:03:48.76\00:03:51.39 We thought that this Man was going to redeem Israel 00:03:51.73\00:03:55.36 and now is the third day since He was crucified. 00:03:55.60\00:04:00.10 You can hear the disappointment in their voices. 00:04:00.34\00:04:03.84 And then, of course, Jesus spoke to them 00:04:04.07\00:04:07.88 in direct terms. And I would like to read 00:04:08.01\00:04:11.58 His words in Luke chapter 24 00:04:11.71\00:04:15.15 and verses 25 through 27. 00:04:15.28\00:04:18.95 Actually, this is quite a rebuke of Jesus. 00:04:19.19\00:04:22.76 Notice what He says in Luke 24 and verse 25. 00:04:22.99\00:04:26.90 "Then He said to them: 'O foolish ones, 00:04:28.06\00:04:33.27 and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have 00:04:33.50\00:04:38.34 spoken. Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things 00:04:38.47\00:04:43.41 and to enter into His glory? ' " 00:04:43.55\00:04:46.11 And now notice verse 27: 00:04:46.35\00:04:48.42 "And beginning at Moses 00:04:48.55\00:04:51.89 and all the prophets He expounded to them 00:04:52.22\00:04:57.66 in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself. " 00:04:57.79\00:05:03.77 We have three categories that are mentioned here by Jesus. 00:05:04.10\00:05:07.97 Moses, the prophets, and the scriptures or the writings. 00:05:08.20\00:05:13.17 These are the very 3 divisions that the Jews had established 00:05:13.61\00:05:17.45 for the Old Testament. 00:05:17.48\00:05:18.98 The law of Moses... 00:05:19.21\00:05:20.38 the prophets were the nebeim 00:05:20.42\00:05:22.88 and the writings were the ketubim. 00:05:23.02\00:05:25.72 In other words, Jesus is saying 00:05:25.95\00:05:28.59 "I am at the center of the writings of Moses; 00:05:28.72\00:05:31.43 I am at the center of the writings of all of the prophets; 00:05:31.56\00:05:34.56 I am at the center of all of the rest of the Old Testament. " 00:05:34.73\00:05:38.33 He expounded unto them the things in the scriptures 00:05:38.60\00:05:43.57 concerning Himself. 00:05:43.81\00:05:46.24 Now I want you to notice how these men felt 00:05:46.47\00:05:50.15 after Jesus spoke these words to them. 00:05:50.28\00:05:53.38 Luke 24 and verses 30-32. 00:05:53.62\00:05:57.85 "Now it came to pass as He sat at the table with them 00:05:58.09\00:06:03.16 that He took bread, blessed and broke it, 00:06:03.39\00:06:07.10 and gave it to them. 00:06:07.23\00:06:08.76 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him, 00:06:09.00\00:06:12.40 and He vanished from their sight. 00:06:12.63\00:06:15.37 And they said to one another: 'Did not our hearts burn 00:06:16.07\00:06:22.08 within us while He talked with us on the road 00:06:22.11\00:06:27.08 and while He opened the scriptures to us? ' " 00:06:27.22\00:06:32.59 Notice that when Jesus opened the scriptures 00:06:33.02\00:06:35.62 and revealed Himself to them from the scriptures 00:06:35.76\00:06:39.49 they burned in their hearts because now they looked at the 00:06:39.66\00:06:44.33 scriptures from a different perspective. 00:06:44.37\00:06:47.00 A little bit later on Jesus was in the upper room 00:06:47.24\00:06:52.54 with His disciples. 00:06:52.67\00:06:54.48 And I want you to notice what He said to His disciples 00:06:54.71\00:06:57.85 in Luke chapter 24 and verses 44 and 45. 00:06:57.98\00:07:03.99 Luke 24 and verses 44 and 45. 00:07:04.32\00:07:08.69 "Then He said to them: 00:07:09.02\00:07:11.63 'These are the words which I spoke to you 00:07:11.86\00:07:15.13 while I was still with you: 00:07:15.26\00:07:17.17 that all things must be fulfilled which were written 00:07:17.30\00:07:22.84 in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms 00:07:22.97\00:07:28.74 concerning Me. ' And He opened their understanding 00:07:28.88\00:07:33.88 that they might comprehend the scriptures. " 00:07:34.02\00:07:38.25 We find in these verses that the center of the scriptures 00:07:39.45\00:07:43.99 of the Old Testament is Jesus. 00:07:44.13\00:07:46.73 Whether it be the writings of Moses, 00:07:46.96\00:07:49.26 whether it be the writings of the prophets, 00:07:49.40\00:07:51.77 whether it be the writings as such 00:07:51.90\00:07:54.94 in the Old Testament - whatever is not Moses and the 00:07:55.07\00:07:57.67 prophets, whether it be the Psalms... 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.81 Jesus says that the scriptures are a revelation of Himself. 00:08:01.04\00:08:06.15 On every page of the Old Testament 00:08:07.68\00:08:11.49 we find a revelation of Jesus. 00:08:11.62\00:08:14.72 Now today we are going to study the story of Joseph. 00:08:14.99\00:08:19.93 Joseph... as a type of Jesus Christ. 00:08:20.16\00:08:23.87 We're going to find a series of amazing parallels 00:08:24.20\00:08:27.44 between Joseph and Jesus. 00:08:27.57\00:08:29.14 We're going to actually see that the life of Joseph 00:08:29.37\00:08:32.21 was a pattern or an illustration or a type 00:08:32.34\00:08:35.61 of the life that Jesus would live later on in human history. 00:08:35.74\00:08:40.55 Actually approximately 1,700 years later. 00:08:40.58\00:08:44.59 Now let's begin our study of the life of Joseph 00:08:44.62\00:08:48.06 in Genesis chapter 37 and verse 3. 00:08:48.19\00:08:51.99 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 3. 00:08:52.23\00:08:56.26 Here we're told this: 00:08:57.23\00:08:59.07 So you have what we might call "the ancient of days" 00:09:19.95\00:09:23.79 who has a beloved son 00:09:24.03\00:09:26.70 whom he loves above all of his other sons. 00:09:26.93\00:09:30.87 And this son's name is Joseph. 00:09:31.10\00:09:33.90 Now we all know that Joseph had two dreams. 00:09:33.94\00:09:38.67 And in these dreams basically he told his father 00:09:38.91\00:09:43.41 and his brothers that someday they were going to come 00:09:43.55\00:09:47.08 and they were going to bow before his feet. 00:09:47.22\00:09:50.09 Notice Genesis chapter 37 and verse 10. 00:09:50.32\00:09:54.72 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 10. 00:09:54.96\00:09:58.03 By the way, this riled his brothers. 00:09:58.99\00:10:01.60 It says there in chapter 37 and verse 10: 00:10:01.83\00:10:05.47 "Are you saying that we're going to come and we're going to 00:10:24.89\00:10:27.49 bow before you? " is what Jacob 00:10:27.52\00:10:29.96 is saying. And of course, 00:10:29.99\00:10:31.56 we know from this story 00:10:31.59\00:10:33.06 that his brothers were very very 00:10:33.19\00:10:35.56 angry at him saying that they would come and bow at his feet. 00:10:35.60\00:10:40.77 In fact, we're told in Genesis 37 that his brothers 00:10:41.00\00:10:44.34 hated him. Notice Genesis chapter 37... 00:10:44.47\00:10:48.34 Genesis chapter 37 and verses 4 and 5. 00:10:48.58\00:10:52.58 It says here: 00:10:52.91\00:10:54.82 And then it says: "Now Joseph had a dream 00:11:07.66\00:11:11.00 and he told it to his brothers 00:11:11.13\00:11:13.23 and they hated him even more. " 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.84 The idea of them coming and bowing before Joseph; 00:11:16.27\00:11:19.24 the idea that he was the beloved son; 00:11:19.37\00:11:22.38 and by the way, the fact that the life of Joseph 00:11:22.61\00:11:25.98 was exemplary and condemned their sinfulness 00:11:26.11\00:11:30.79 led them to hate their brother. 00:11:30.92\00:11:34.06 In fact, they not only hated their brother because he was 00:11:34.39\00:11:37.66 the beloved son and because he said that they were going to 00:11:37.69\00:11:41.70 come and bow before his feet and because he had a sterling 00:11:41.73\00:11:45.97 character which rebuked their sinfulness, 00:11:46.10\00:11:48.57 but they also envied their brother 00:11:48.70\00:11:52.74 because of these facts. 00:11:52.97\00:11:54.61 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 37 and verse 11. 00:11:54.84\00:11:59.01 It says there: "And his brothers envied him 00:11:59.25\00:12:03.89 but his father kept the matter in mind. " 00:12:04.02\00:12:08.92 And so his brothers hate him. 00:12:09.16\00:12:11.13 His brothers envy him 00:12:11.36\00:12:13.70 because of his favored position with his father 00:12:13.93\00:12:17.00 because he's the beloved son. 00:12:17.13\00:12:19.30 Now immediately we see the parallel with Jesus. 00:12:19.53\00:12:22.94 Jesus also is the special Son of His Father. 00:12:23.91\00:12:28.98 Jesus also had a sterling character which rebuked 00:12:29.21\00:12:34.08 the sinfulness of His brothers that He came to save. 00:12:34.22\00:12:38.39 Also, those that He came to minister among 00:12:39.35\00:12:42.69 were greatly aggravated when Jesus spoke about 00:12:42.82\00:12:47.50 Him being a King and Him ruling over the earth. 00:12:47.60\00:12:52.07 In fact, we find in Luke chapter 19 and verse 14 00:12:52.87\00:12:58.24 that they did not accept the idea that Jesus 00:12:58.41\00:13:02.24 was going to reign or rule over them. 00:13:02.38\00:13:05.18 Luke chapter 19 and verse 14 says this: 00:13:05.41\00:13:10.49 "But His citizens hated Him... " 00:13:10.65\00:13:15.29 Notice that. 00:13:15.42\00:13:17.89 "and sent a delegation after Him saying 00:13:18.13\00:13:21.46 'We will not have this Man to reign over us. 00:13:21.60\00:13:26.37 We will not accept Him as King. 00:13:27.30\00:13:30.27 He will not rule over us. ' " 00:13:30.31\00:13:32.91 In fact, we find in scripture that Jesus was envied 00:13:33.24\00:13:38.35 by those that He came in contact with. 00:13:38.48\00:13:41.28 Notice Matthew chapter 27 and verse 18. 00:13:41.52\00:13:45.39 Matthew chapter 27 and verse 18. 00:13:45.65\00:13:49.76 In fact, those He came to save envied Him 00:13:49.99\00:13:53.26 because of His special position. 00:13:53.40\00:13:55.83 Matthew chapter 27 and verse 18 says this: 00:13:55.86\00:14:00.57 "For He knew that they had handed Him over... " 00:14:02.50\00:14:07.18 this is speaking about Pilate... 00:14:07.21\00:14:09.51 "that they had handed over Jesus because of... " What? 00:14:09.64\00:14:13.42 "because of envy. " 00:14:13.65\00:14:16.38 And so Jesus - the beloved Son of His Father - 00:14:17.22\00:14:19.95 is hated by His own brothers. 00:14:20.19\00:14:23.39 The say: "We will not allow this Man to rule over us. " 00:14:23.63\00:14:26.53 They hate the fact that He's the beloved Son of the Father 00:14:26.86\00:14:30.40 and they hate His sterling character which rebukes 00:14:30.53\00:14:33.97 their sinfulness. 00:14:34.00\00:14:35.94 Now it's interesting to notice that Abraham 00:14:36.17\00:14:39.27 the father... or rather Jacob the father sends his son 00:14:39.41\00:14:44.11 Joseph to Joseph's brothers. 00:14:44.25\00:14:46.95 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 37 and verse 13. 00:14:47.18\00:14:51.82 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 13. 00:14:52.05\00:14:55.82 The father sends the son to his brothers. 00:14:56.06\00:14:58.86 To a far country incidentally. 00:14:59.09\00:15:01.16 Notice Genesis chapter 37 and verse 13. 00:15:01.40\00:15:07.00 It says here: 00:15:07.44\00:15:08.77 Notice that the father is planning to send Joseph 00:15:27.66\00:15:31.99 to his brothers, and Joseph says to his father 00:15:32.13\00:15:35.76 "Your will be done. " 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.10 And so Joseph leaves his father's house 00:15:38.43\00:15:40.97 and he travels to a far land to minister to his brothers. 00:15:41.10\00:15:46.37 And by the way, his brothers are lost. 00:15:46.61\00:15:49.28 He actually goes out to seek them. 00:15:49.51\00:15:51.48 And he has to stop along the way and ask: "Where 00:15:51.71\00:15:55.62 are my brothers? I'm seeking for my brothers. " 00:15:55.75\00:15:59.02 And so he leaves his father's house; 00:15:59.25\00:16:02.32 he goes to a far land; 00:16:02.46\00:16:04.39 he's sent to seek his brothers who are lost. 00:16:04.53\00:16:07.86 Dare I say that this is the very same thing 00:16:08.30\00:16:13.07 which happened with Jesus? 00:16:13.20\00:16:14.77 Notice the gospel of Luke chapter 19 and verse 10. 00:16:15.00\00:16:20.08 Luke chapter 19 and verse 10. 00:16:20.31\00:16:23.21 This is the conclusion of the Zacchaeus episode, 00:16:23.58\00:16:27.05 and notice the terminology that is used. 00:16:27.28\00:16:30.39 Luke chapter 19 and verse 10. 00:16:30.62\00:16:33.59 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save 00:16:34.62\00:16:40.56 that which was lost. " 00:16:40.60\00:16:43.23 And so Jesus Christ is sent by His Father to a far land 00:16:43.57\00:16:48.27 to seek His brothers who are lost 00:16:48.40\00:16:51.54 just like Joseph was sent by his father 00:16:51.77\00:16:55.04 to a far land to seek his brothers who were also lost. 00:16:55.18\00:17:00.68 And when God the Father said to Jesus: 00:17:00.95\00:17:02.92 "You should go down and take My gift to Your brothers" 00:17:03.05\00:17:06.89 Jesus said just like Joseph... He said: "Father, 00:17:07.02\00:17:11.39 I am here. Your will be done. " 00:17:11.63\00:17:15.63 But we're told in scripture that when Joseph takes the gift 00:17:16.06\00:17:20.74 of his father to his brothers 00:17:20.87\00:17:24.07 his brothers actually plotted to kill him 00:17:24.21\00:17:27.54 because they hated him. 00:17:27.68\00:17:28.94 Notice Genesis chapter 37 and verses 18 and 19. 00:17:29.18\00:17:33.78 Genesis 37 and verses 18 and 19. 00:17:34.02\00:17:38.82 It says here: 00:17:39.05\00:17:40.59 "Then they said to one another: 00:17:51.20\00:17:53.30 'Look, the dreamer is coming. ' " 00:17:53.34\00:17:56.91 Notice that it is said here that when Joseph 00:17:57.14\00:18:02.24 sees his brothers afar off 00:18:02.48\00:18:05.05 his brothers whom he came to 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.15 bless with the gifts from the 00:18:07.18\00:18:08.72 father actually are filled with 00:18:08.75\00:18:10.99 hatred against him and they plot 00:18:11.02\00:18:13.49 to kill him. 00:18:13.66\00:18:15.02 Is this true also about Jesus? 00:18:15.46\00:18:18.29 In John chapter 1 and verse 11 00:18:18.63\00:18:21.80 we are told that Jesus: 00:18:21.93\00:18:24.50 We also notice in John chapter 15 and verse 25 00:18:30.31\00:18:34.81 a very interesting remark. 00:18:34.94\00:18:37.61 John chapter 15 and verse 25. 00:18:38.05\00:18:42.42 Here Jesus actually is being referred to. 00:18:42.65\00:18:46.19 He says this in verse 25: 00:18:46.42\00:18:48.52 Did Joseph's brothers really have any true reason 00:19:03.20\00:19:06.88 to hate their brother? Absolutely not. 00:19:07.01\00:19:09.48 They hated him without cause. 00:19:09.71\00:19:12.18 And His own hate Him without cause. 00:19:16.55\00:19:20.32 Notice how the story of Joseph is picked up 00:19:20.56\00:19:23.69 also in Matthew 21 and verses 37 and 38. 00:19:23.83\00:19:28.70 Matthew chapter 21 and verses 37 and 38. 00:19:28.73\00:19:32.97 This is the famous parable of the vineyard workers. 00:19:33.10\00:19:37.14 Matthew chapter 21 and verses 37 and 38. 00:19:37.57\00:19:43.24 So just like with Joseph he came to his brothers 00:20:09.24\00:20:12.57 sent by his father and he was hated without cause 00:20:12.71\00:20:15.88 by his brothers. They envied him. 00:20:16.01\00:20:18.41 So when Jesus was sent by His Father to His brothers 00:20:18.65\00:20:22.05 they received Him not. 00:20:22.18\00:20:23.45 They hated Him without cause. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.69 They delivered Him because of envy according to scripture. 00:20:25.92\00:20:29.06 And they plotted to kill Jesus just like Joseph's brothers 00:20:29.19\00:20:32.89 plotted to kill him. 00:20:33.03\00:20:34.46 There's another interesting comparison in this story. 00:20:34.93\00:20:37.87 One of the brothers of Joseph actually wanted to deliver 00:20:38.20\00:20:43.54 Joseph from the hands of his brothers. What was his name? 00:20:43.67\00:20:48.11 His name was Reuben. 00:20:48.34\00:20:49.98 Notice Genesis 37 and verses 21 and 22. 00:20:50.21\00:20:54.62 Genesis 37 and verses 21 and 22. 00:20:54.95\00:20:59.52 But Reuben lacked moral backbone. 00:21:24.95\00:21:28.25 At the very moment he should have said to the brothers 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.49 "This is wrong... we should not do this. " 00:21:31.72\00:21:35.32 And he should have delivered Joseph and sent him back 00:21:35.66\00:21:39.16 to his father. But he contemporized. 00:21:39.19\00:21:42.36 He says: "Well, I'll let them cast him into this pit here 00:21:42.50\00:21:46.27 and then a little bit later on I will come 00:21:46.40\00:21:49.07 and I will deliver him. " 00:21:49.20\00:21:50.97 He had no moral backbone to stand for the right. 00:21:51.21\00:21:54.21 Now let me ask you: was there an individual 00:21:54.54\00:21:56.98 in the case of Christ that tried to deliver Jesus 00:21:57.11\00:22:00.32 and COULD HAVE delivered Jesus but had no moral backbone? 00:22:00.45\00:22:04.45 Of course. What was his name? 00:22:05.32\00:22:07.49 His name was Pontius Pilate. 00:22:07.62\00:22:10.26 Notice John chapter 19 and verse 12. 00:22:10.69\00:22:14.56 John 19:12. He did everything possible 00:22:14.83\00:22:17.37 to deliver Jesus but he did not take a stand. 00:22:17.50\00:22:20.17 John chapter 19 and verse 12 00:22:20.40\00:22:23.71 is one of the verses that speaks about Pontius Pilate's 00:22:23.74\00:22:26.71 intention of delivering Christ. 00:22:26.84\00:22:29.14 It says here in verse 12: 00:22:29.38\00:22:31.58 "From then on Pilate sought to release Him 00:22:31.71\00:22:35.65 but the Jews cried out saying: 'If you let this Man go, 00:22:35.78\00:22:39.69 you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself 00:22:39.82\00:22:43.32 a king speaks against Caesar. ' " 00:22:43.36\00:22:45.89 And so instead of delivering Jesus and taking a stand 00:22:46.80\00:22:50.63 at that moment, Pontius Pilate actually allowed 00:22:50.77\00:22:54.94 Jesus to be delivered to be killed. 00:22:54.97\00:22:58.54 Another interesting parallel between Joseph and Jesus 00:22:59.31\00:23:02.68 is the fact that Joseph was stripped of his garments 00:23:02.81\00:23:06.58 by his brothers. Notice what we find in Genesis 37:23. 00:23:06.72\00:23:12.52 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 23. 00:23:12.75\00:23:16.69 We find here what his brothers did to him. It says there: 00:23:17.89\00:23:23.10 Question: was Jesus also stripped of His garments? 00:23:35.61\00:23:40.15 Notice what we find in Matthew chapter 27 00:23:40.48\00:23:43.62 and verse 28. Matthew chapter 27 and verse 28. 00:23:43.75\00:23:49.69 We're told here as Jesus is in Pilate's court: 00:23:49.92\00:23:53.96 "And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. " 00:24:01.30\00:24:05.51 We're going to come back to the scarlet robe in a moment. 00:24:05.64\00:24:07.64 Notice that they stripped Him of His garment and they put 00:24:07.88\00:24:11.41 a scarlet or a red robe upon Him. 00:24:11.45\00:24:14.55 And so in both cases Joseph and Jesus 00:24:14.68\00:24:17.75 are stripped of their garments. 00:24:17.89\00:24:20.22 Now it's interesting that Joseph - according to Genesis - 00:24:20.66\00:24:24.66 was cast into an empty pit. 00:24:24.79\00:24:29.10 And the word pit, by the way, can refer to a place 00:24:29.73\00:24:33.44 where dead people are laid. 00:24:33.57\00:24:35.74 In Isaiah 38 and verse 18 it's synonymously used with 00:24:35.97\00:24:40.31 the word Sheol. It's used synonymous with death. 00:24:40.34\00:24:44.41 In other words, his brothers put him in that pit - 00:24:44.58\00:24:47.28 in that empty pit - with the intention probably 00:24:47.52\00:24:50.92 of have him dying in that pit. 00:24:51.05\00:24:53.66 It's interesting that Jesus was buried in an empty tomb. 00:24:53.99\00:24:58.49 Notice Luke chapter 23 and verse 53. 00:24:58.73\00:25:02.63 Luke chapter 23 and verse 53. 00:25:02.86\00:25:06.63 Here we find the following words... speaking about Jesus: 00:25:07.57\00:25:12.81 "Then he took it down, 00:25:13.64\00:25:16.01 wrapped it in them, 00:25:16.34\00:25:19.05 and laid it in a tomb 00:25:19.08\00:25:23.35 that was hewn out of the rock 00:25:23.49\00:25:25.79 where no one had ever lain before. " 00:25:25.92\00:25:29.56 And so Joseph is cast in the pit 00:25:29.89\00:25:32.53 and Jesus is placed in an empty tomb. 00:25:32.76\00:25:35.90 Another interesting parallel between Joseph and Jesus 00:25:36.87\00:25:40.07 is the fact that both of them were sold 00:25:40.20\00:25:44.01 for pieces of silver. 00:25:44.14\00:25:45.97 In the case of Joseph, Joseph was sold for 20 pieces 00:25:46.21\00:25:49.34 of silver. Let's read that in Genesis 37:28. 00:25:49.38\00:25:54.32 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 28. 00:25:54.55\00:25:59.02 Here we find the following words... 00:25:59.39\00:26:01.46 37 and verse 28... it says this: 00:26:01.72\00:26:06.29 "And they took Joseph to Egypt. " 00:26:23.98\00:26:27.28 Now I want you to notice 00:26:27.52\00:26:29.08 what we're told about Jesus. 00:26:29.12\00:26:30.89 Matthew chapter 26 and verse 15. 00:26:31.12\00:26:34.39 Matthew chapter 26 and verse 15. 00:26:34.62\00:26:37.86 And I'm sure that we've read 00:26:37.89\00:26:38.96 this before, but let's go ahead and read it again. 00:26:38.99\00:26:42.10 It says: 00:26:43.03\00:26:44.37 And so Joseph and Jesus are sold for pieces of silver. 00:27:01.32\00:27:05.72 Another interesting parallel between Joseph and Christ 00:27:06.32\00:27:09.52 is the fact that both of their garments were stained in blood. 00:27:09.66\00:27:14.56 Now you say: "How is that? " 00:27:15.46\00:27:17.00 You know what his brothers did with the tunic of Joseph. 00:27:17.23\00:27:20.77 Was the tunic of Joseph dipped in blood? 00:27:30.95\00:27:34.28 Most certainly. 00:27:34.52\00:27:35.88 "Then they sent the tunic of many colors 00:27:36.12\00:27:40.46 and they brought it to their father and said: 00:27:40.59\00:27:43.39 'We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son's 00:27:43.53\00:27:48.00 tunic or not? ' " 00:27:48.13\00:27:49.33 And so the garments of Joseph were stained in blood. 00:27:49.56\00:27:53.60 If you read the gospels, you discover that a scarlet robe 00:27:54.04\00:27:57.57 was placed upon Jesus and then Jesus was beaten. 00:27:57.61\00:28:01.04 And this scarlet robe was filled with the blood of Jesus. 00:28:01.18\00:28:04.51 Actually, that sacrifice of that kid by the brothers of Joseph 00:28:04.75\00:28:09.42 symbolized the sacrifice of Jesus and the fact that 00:28:09.55\00:28:13.49 the garments of Jesus were going to be stained in His blood. 00:28:13.62\00:28:17.16 Now it's also interesting to notice that the father 00:28:18.09\00:28:22.06 of Joseph - Jacob - suffered intensely along with his son. 00:28:22.20\00:28:27.44 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 37 00:28:27.77\00:28:31.17 and verses 34 and 35. 00:28:31.31\00:28:34.38 Genesis 37 and verses 34 and 35. 00:28:34.61\00:28:39.48 It says here: 00:28:39.71\00:28:41.18 If you read the Desire of Ages you'll discover that not only 00:29:08.21\00:29:12.01 did Jesus suffer on the cross but His Father suffered 00:29:12.15\00:29:15.78 right along with Him 00:29:15.92\00:29:17.59 as Jesus suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane 00:29:17.62\00:29:20.42 and as Jesus hung on the cross of Calvary. 00:29:20.56\00:29:24.39 It's also interesting to notice that everything that Joseph did 00:29:25.53\00:29:30.40 prospered in his hand. 00:29:30.53\00:29:32.83 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 39 00:29:32.97\00:29:36.40 and verse 3. Genesis chapter 39 and verse 3. 00:29:36.54\00:29:42.51 Everything that Joseph did prospered. 00:29:42.74\00:29:45.15 It says there in verse 3: 00:29:45.28\00:29:47.18 "And his master saw that the Lord was with him 00:29:47.32\00:29:51.45 and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. " 00:29:51.69\00:29:57.33 So notice that everything that the Lord places in Joseph's 00:29:57.56\00:30:00.56 hand Joseph makes to prosper. 00:30:00.60\00:30:04.37 By the way, this is the same thing that is said of Jesus 00:30:04.70\00:30:08.27 as the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 and verse 10. 00:30:08.40\00:30:11.97 Go with me to Isaiah chapter 53 and verse 10 00:30:12.24\00:30:16.34 and notice this wonderful prophecy about Christ 00:30:16.58\00:30:19.91 and how everything that the Father had in plan for Jesus 00:30:20.05\00:30:24.15 would prosper in His hand. 00:30:24.29\00:30:26.39 It says here: "Yet it pleased the Lord 00:30:26.62\00:30:29.89 to bruise Him. He has put Him to grief, 00:30:30.03\00:30:34.20 when you make His soul an offering for sin 00:30:34.40\00:30:38.10 He shall see His seed. He shall prolong His days. 00:30:38.23\00:30:42.54 And the pleasure of the Lord shall... " What? 00:30:43.87\00:30:47.31 "the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. " 00:30:47.44\00:30:51.68 And so as Joseph suffers but everything that he does 00:30:52.01\00:30:55.72 prospers, in the same way Jesus - the suffering servant - 00:30:55.85\00:31:00.06 everything that He performs for the Lord prospers 00:31:00.09\00:31:03.66 in His hands. Now as you look at the life of Joseph 00:31:03.79\00:31:08.00 where his brothers sold him into slavery... 00:31:08.13\00:31:10.00 And by the way, it was as if Joseph had died, 00:31:10.17\00:31:13.64 correct? At least in the mind of the father 00:31:13.87\00:31:16.14 it was like Joseph had died... And in the minds of his brothers 00:31:16.27\00:31:18.87 they had gotten rid of Joseph. And the prophecy that Joseph 00:31:19.21\00:31:23.68 was going to be lord over them according to them was not 00:31:23.71\00:31:26.41 going to be fulfilled. 00:31:26.45\00:31:28.02 The interesting thing is: by the very plot to get rid of Joseph 00:31:28.15\00:31:32.72 Joseph went to a far land 00:31:32.95\00:31:35.72 and he actually became their savior and he saved them 00:31:35.86\00:31:40.26 from death. So their plot to destroy Joseph 00:31:40.30\00:31:43.40 actually became the means for their salvation. 00:31:43.53\00:31:46.94 Let me ask you: in the case of Jesus 00:31:47.37\00:31:50.34 was the plot that was developed against Christ 00:31:50.71\00:31:54.44 and the slaying of Christ and His death on the cross 00:31:54.58\00:31:58.45 the means that God used to save those who crucified Him 00:31:58.58\00:32:04.22 from spiritual death and from everlasting death? 00:32:04.25\00:32:06.92 Yes. They plotted and they actually thought that they had 00:32:07.36\00:32:09.99 gotten rid of Jesus. But actually by their very act 00:32:10.03\00:32:14.00 of trying to get rid of Jesus and slay Jesus 00:32:14.13\00:32:17.13 Jesus became their Savior. 00:32:17.27\00:32:20.67 It's interesting to notice that by what Joseph suffered 00:32:20.90\00:32:25.24 he learned to trust in God. 00:32:25.37\00:32:29.04 In fact, you look at the story as we find it in Genesis 00:32:29.78\00:32:33.42 and Joseph never actually laid plans for his life. 00:32:33.55\00:32:37.79 He relied upon God 00:32:38.22\00:32:40.66 and allowed God to choreograph his life. 00:32:40.79\00:32:43.63 He didn't say: "Well, I'm going to do this, 00:32:44.16\00:32:46.09 I'm going to do that. " He simply cooperated with God, 00:32:46.23\00:32:50.33 walked with God in fulfilling God's will 00:32:50.47\00:32:54.17 as God revealed His plans to him step by step. 00:32:54.30\00:32:58.54 And interestingly enough, by Joseph becoming a servant 00:32:58.71\00:33:03.48 in Egypt he became qualified then to be lord. 00:33:03.61\00:33:07.22 As he was a servant he learned obedience. 00:33:07.55\00:33:11.32 He learned dependence upon God, and as a result of this 00:33:11.55\00:33:16.02 when he became lord he was qualified to fulfill his duties 00:33:16.16\00:33:21.13 as lord and as master. 00:33:21.26\00:33:23.70 So it is with Jesus. You see, Jesus became a servant. 00:33:23.93\00:33:29.17 And by becoming a servant He became qualified to be Lord 00:33:29.50\00:33:34.34 over His people. Jesus did not lay plans for Himself. 00:33:34.48\00:33:38.65 He simply cooperated with His Father's plan day by day. 00:33:39.01\00:33:43.65 Even though perhaps Jesus didn't understand everything 00:33:43.82\00:33:46.52 that was happening in His life 00:33:46.65\00:33:48.19 He walked step in step with what His Father had 00:33:48.32\00:33:52.03 choreographed for Him. 00:33:52.06\00:33:53.73 In fact, allow me to read you a statement that's found in 00:33:53.86\00:33:56.06 Desire of Ages page 208. 00:33:56.20\00:33:59.70 This is a very well-known statement but very profound. 00:34:00.60\00:34:04.17 It says here: 00:34:04.84\00:34:06.47 Isn't that amazing? 00:34:16.62\00:34:17.99 He was so emptied of self that He made no plans for Himself. 00:34:18.22\00:34:22.46 I'm sure that Joseph didn't understand a lot of things 00:34:34.04\00:34:36.60 that happened with him. In fact, we have another lecture 00:34:36.64\00:34:39.27 coming up in a couple of sessions where we're going to 00:34:39.31\00:34:42.44 discuss God's providence in the story of Joseph. 00:34:42.48\00:34:45.18 You know, I'm sure that Joseph 00:34:45.41\00:34:46.95 didn't particularly understand 00:34:47.08\00:34:48.68 how, because of his sterling 00:34:48.85\00:34:52.65 character and because he was 00:34:52.79\00:34:54.39 beloved by his father, 00:34:54.42\00:34:55.72 he would be sold into slavery. 00:34:55.86\00:34:57.39 That appeared to be an injustice. 00:34:57.53\00:34:59.53 And then because he was faithful in obeying the commandment 00:34:59.76\00:35:02.50 "Thou shalt not commit adultery" 00:35:02.63\00:35:04.07 he ends up in jail... he ends up in prison. 00:35:04.20\00:35:06.57 I don't think that Joseph fully understood everything 00:35:07.00\00:35:10.01 that was happening, but he said: "God has a plan. 00:35:10.04\00:35:12.41 I don't understand the plan but I will some day. 00:35:12.54\00:35:15.28 I'm going to walk step by step 00:35:15.51\00:35:17.11 in the plan that God has laid out for me. " 00:35:17.15\00:35:19.18 And so it was with Jesus. 00:35:19.31\00:35:21.05 Many things happened in His life 00:35:21.28\00:35:22.82 and perhaps when He was going through these things, 00:35:22.95\00:35:25.09 you know, He didn't fully understand everything that was 00:35:25.22\00:35:28.06 happening. But He walked step in step with the plans 00:35:28.09\00:35:31.29 of His Father. And then, of course, Ellen White 00:35:31.43\00:35:34.20 tells us this... speaking about us: 00:35:34.30\00:35:37.87 Now I want to read Hebrews chapter 5 verses 8 and 9 00:35:48.51\00:35:53.25 about Christ. Hebrews chapter 5 verses 8 and 9. 00:35:53.38\00:35:57.65 Do you know that Jesus by becoming a servant 00:35:57.89\00:36:00.46 and by going through His trials and tribulations 00:36:00.59\00:36:03.16 and temptations actually became qualified to be Lord? 00:36:03.29\00:36:07.76 Notice what we find in Hebrews chapter 5... 00:36:08.13\00:36:10.97 Hebrews chapter 5 and let's read verses... 00:36:11.10\00:36:14.64 What did I say? 7 and 8. Hebrews 5... actually verses 00:36:15.34\00:36:20.31 8 and 9. Let's not begin at verse 7. It says in verse 8: 00:36:20.34\00:36:23.71 By the way, the word obedience there would mean 00:36:35.96\00:36:37.89 He learned to depend upon His Father. 00:36:38.03\00:36:41.56 And now notice verse 9: 00:36:41.90\00:36:43.50 Doesn't mean that He wasn't perfect. 00:36:45.50\00:36:46.80 The word perfected there means qualified 00:36:46.94\00:36:50.17 to fulfill His mission because of what He suffered. 00:36:50.31\00:36:53.34 In other words, the sufferings of Jesus, 00:37:02.78\00:37:05.09 the trials and temptations of Jesus, 00:37:05.12\00:37:07.69 became the school where He learned. And He became 00:37:07.82\00:37:11.69 qualified to fulfill His mission as Savior of the human race. 00:37:11.83\00:37:16.67 The same is true of Joseph. 00:37:16.90\00:37:18.77 The things that he suffered, 00:37:19.00\00:37:20.40 the temptations which he resisted, 00:37:20.54\00:37:22.60 qualified Him then to fulfill His mission 00:37:22.74\00:37:26.37 to save his brothers and his father, and to preserve 00:37:26.51\00:37:30.61 incidentally the holy line. 00:37:30.75\00:37:33.28 Now was Joseph tempted severely 00:37:34.02\00:37:38.09 in his life? Well, we have one particular temptation 00:37:38.85\00:37:42.49 when Potiphar's wife tried to entice him into adultery. 00:37:43.32\00:37:46.93 And how did Joseph respond? 00:37:48.43\00:37:50.37 He didn't play with temptation. 00:37:50.60\00:37:52.57 He immediately said: "How can I commit this terrible 00:37:52.90\00:37:57.57 sin against God? " 00:37:57.61\00:38:00.04 How did Jesus meet temptation when Satan came after Christ? 00:38:00.28\00:38:04.51 Jesus did not play with temptation. 00:38:04.65\00:38:07.82 When Satan's temptations came Jesus immediately said what? 00:38:08.02\00:38:12.32 "It is written... " 00:38:12.55\00:38:14.52 Both Joseph and Jesus - through the power of God - 00:38:14.56\00:38:17.96 overcame temptation. 00:38:18.09\00:38:20.86 Now there's another interesting parallel between 00:38:21.06\00:38:24.00 Joseph and Jesus. You know, Joseph, according to the story, 00:38:24.23\00:38:30.04 becomes a servant and then he becomes lord. 00:38:30.17\00:38:34.61 His position as a servant qualified him to become lord. 00:38:36.68\00:38:41.02 That we find in the story of Joseph. 00:38:42.22\00:38:45.02 But do you know that this is exactly the situation 00:38:45.35\00:38:48.29 that we find with Jesus as well? 00:38:48.42\00:38:50.79 Jesus also became a servant that He might become Lord. 00:38:51.59\00:38:56.97 I want you to notice Genesis chapter 45 00:38:57.87\00:39:01.17 and verse 15 about Joseph. 00:39:01.30\00:39:04.34 Genesis chapter 45 and verse 15. 00:39:04.57\00:39:08.08 Here we're told: 00:39:08.98\00:39:10.45 "Moreover he kissed all his brothers 00:39:10.58\00:39:15.58 and wept over them. 00:39:17.92\00:39:20.56 And after that his brothers talked with him. " 00:39:20.89\00:39:25.66 Did Joseph forgive his brothers in spite of the fact 00:39:25.99\00:39:31.77 that they had hated him and they had plotted to kill him? 00:39:31.90\00:39:35.37 Absolutely. 00:39:35.50\00:39:36.91 What words did Jesus speak on the cross of Calvary? 00:39:37.14\00:39:40.11 He said: "Father, forgive them 00:39:40.34\00:39:42.64 for they know not what they do. " 00:39:42.88\00:39:45.65 By the way, did the brothers of Joseph eventually 00:39:45.98\00:39:48.98 come and bow before Joseph? 00:39:49.12\00:39:51.12 They most certainly did. 00:39:51.39\00:39:52.89 The dream that had been revealed to Joseph at the beginning 00:39:53.32\00:39:57.03 of his life now was fulfilled at the end. 00:39:57.06\00:40:00.83 Did Jesus also speak about 00:40:01.96\00:40:06.40 every knee bowing and every tongue confessing 00:40:06.63\00:40:11.51 that Jesus is Lord after Jesus became a servant? 00:40:11.64\00:40:16.01 Notice Philippians chapter 2 and verses 5 through 11. 00:40:16.24\00:40:21.18 Philippians chapter 2 and verses 5 through 11. 00:40:21.42\00:40:25.32 This is a very well-known passage. The apostle Paul 00:40:25.45\00:40:27.86 says this: 00:40:27.89\00:40:28.99 That means He did not consider equality with God 00:40:39.07\00:40:41.57 as something to be hung onto, something to be grasped. 00:40:41.60\00:40:44.97 He continues saying: 00:40:45.77\00:40:47.28 There you have a passage that 00:41:07.86\00:41:09.63 speaks about Jesus 00:41:09.66\00:41:10.83 becoming a servant. 00:41:11.00\00:41:12.93 But what comes in consequence 00:41:13.27\00:41:15.77 of Jesus becoming a servant? 00:41:15.90\00:41:18.11 Verse 9: 00:41:18.24\00:41:19.64 "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him... " 00:41:19.77\00:41:24.21 So as Joseph became a servant 00:41:46.00\00:41:48.94 and then he became his brother's lord 00:41:49.07\00:41:51.64 so Jesus became a servant 00:41:51.87\00:41:54.88 so that He could become the Lord of the human race. 00:41:55.01\00:41:58.65 And as I mentioned, as Jesus forgave His brothers 00:41:58.88\00:42:03.05 Joseph also was magnanimous and merciful 00:42:03.18\00:42:07.26 and he forgave what his brothers had done to him. 00:42:07.39\00:42:12.39 By the way, we have a tremendous lesson here 00:42:12.56\00:42:15.20 in the story of Joseph. 00:42:15.33\00:42:16.77 You know, many people want to occupy high positions 00:42:17.77\00:42:21.00 before they learn to serve. 00:42:21.14\00:42:24.01 You know, the essence of the teachings of Christ 00:42:24.34\00:42:27.04 is found succinctly summarized 00:42:27.48\00:42:31.05 in Matthew chapter 23:12 00:42:31.18\00:42:33.68 where Jesus says: "He who 00:42:33.92\00:42:37.05 humbles himself 00:42:37.09\00:42:39.59 will be exalted 00:42:40.02\00:42:41.66 and he who exalts himself will be humbled. " 00:42:42.76\00:42:47.30 We find this illustration in the life of Jesus. 00:42:47.56\00:42:50.87 Jesus humbled Himself; He became a servant; 00:42:51.10\00:42:55.70 and therefore God highly exalted Him. 00:42:55.84\00:42:58.91 The problem with Lucifer is that Lucifer wanted to be 00:42:59.34\00:43:03.18 exalted without becoming a servant. 00:43:03.31\00:43:06.25 By the way, as you look at the Bible story 00:43:06.48\00:43:09.18 you have - for example - the case of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:43:09.32\00:43:11.72 You know, he goes out onto the balcony of his palace 00:43:11.95\00:43:15.72 and he says: "Isn't this great Babylon 00:43:15.86\00:43:18.09 that I built with my power and for my honor and my glory? " 00:43:18.23\00:43:22.86 And God looked at Nebuchadnezzar and said: 00:43:24.03\00:43:27.14 "Oh is that right? 00:43:27.17\00:43:28.47 So you're lord? You're the big guy? " 00:43:28.50\00:43:31.84 And so God in an instant removes from Nebuchadnezzar 00:43:32.77\00:43:36.54 the pearl of reason. 00:43:36.68\00:43:39.75 In other words, he loses that very aspect that distinguishes 00:43:41.65\00:43:46.22 human beings from animals. 00:43:46.35\00:43:47.79 And, of course, Nebuchadnezzar begins to act like a beast 00:43:48.92\00:43:53.29 because the one aspect that distinguishes animals from 00:43:53.73\00:43:58.37 humans has been removed. 00:43:58.50\00:44:00.27 In other words, Nebuchadnezzar - who wanted to exalt himself - 00:44:01.40\00:44:04.87 was what? Was humbled. 00:44:05.01\00:44:07.51 And then, of course, at the end of this episode 00:44:08.51\00:44:10.78 if you look at Daniel chapter 4 00:44:10.91\00:44:13.08 you find that Nebuchadnezzar says: 00:44:13.21\00:44:15.62 "Now I exalt and glorify the God of heaven 00:44:15.75\00:44:21.29 because He is able to humble those who are proud at heart. " 00:44:21.52\00:44:27.50 By the way, the Bible speaks about two mysteries: 00:44:28.06\00:44:30.80 the mystery of godliness and the mystery of iniquity. 00:44:30.93\00:44:33.67 The mystery of godliness is very simple. 00:44:33.90\00:44:36.50 God was manifest in human flesh. 00:44:36.74\00:44:39.61 God came down; God humbled Himself. 00:44:39.74\00:44:42.41 But when Jesus came down and humbled Himself 00:44:43.38\00:44:46.41 later on in this passage - I Timothy chapter 3- 00:44:46.55\00:44:49.68 it says that Jesus ascended on high 00:44:49.92\00:44:53.22 to His Father's throne. He was exalted. 00:44:53.36\00:44:55.62 On the other hand, in II Thessalonians 2 00:44:55.96\00:44:59.09 we have the mystery of iniquity. 00:44:59.23\00:45:01.03 In the mystery of iniquity an individual who is down here 00:45:01.46\00:45:06.17 wants to sit in the temple of God, showing himself 00:45:06.30\00:45:10.71 to be God... and therefore he will go to perdition. 00:45:10.84\00:45:13.94 Do you notice the contrast between the mystery of godliness 00:45:14.28\00:45:17.98 and the mystery of iniquity? 00:45:18.11\00:45:19.41 The mystery of godliness: God is manifested in human flesh, 00:45:19.68\00:45:23.89 becomes a servant, therefore God exalts Him. 00:45:24.12\00:45:27.49 In the case of the mystery of iniquity 00:45:27.72\00:45:30.69 a being who is a creature wants to exalt himself 00:45:30.86\00:45:33.76 to the position of God and therefore he is humbled. 00:45:33.90\00:45:37.33 This is illustrated in the story of Joseph. 00:45:37.67\00:45:40.87 Joseph became a humble servant and he was exalted 00:45:41.10\00:45:47.14 at the end of his life as lord over his brothers. 00:45:47.18\00:45:50.58 In the same way, folks, it happened with Jesus. 00:45:50.91\00:45:54.65 Jesus lowered Himself to the position of a servant 00:45:54.88\00:45:57.85 and was exalted by His Father 00:45:57.99\00:46:00.36 as Lord of Israel, as Lord over His people. 00:46:00.49\00:46:05.39 Now I'd like to read a statement 00:46:06.39\00:46:08.63 that we find in the book Patriarchs and Prophets. 00:46:08.76\00:46:12.10 It is a passage that has many of the elements 00:46:13.20\00:46:19.21 that we have studied here in our lecture today. 00:46:19.34\00:46:22.91 It's found in Patriarchs and Prophets, page 239-240. 00:46:23.68\00:46:27.28 By the way, Patriarchs and Prophets is a wonderful book 00:46:27.32\00:46:30.85 that describes the history of the Old Testament. 00:46:31.09\00:46:33.79 Actually it goes even before the Old Testament... 00:46:33.82\00:46:35.52 goes to the origin of evil in heaven... 00:46:35.66\00:46:37.26 but mainly from the time of creation all the way through 00:46:37.59\00:46:41.30 the time of David and partially of Solomon... 00:46:41.33\00:46:44.83 the story of Solomon. It's a tremendous history 00:46:44.97\00:46:49.24 of scripture amplified in a beautiful way. 00:46:49.47\00:46:52.74 And by the way, as I read that passage 00:46:53.41\00:46:55.58 that's where I got most of the ideas that I've shared with you 00:46:55.71\00:46:58.78 in our lecture today about Joseph as a symbol of Christ. 00:46:58.91\00:47:02.88 This is what the statement says: 00:47:03.92\00:47:05.85 "The life of Joseph illustrates the life of Christ. 00:47:06.99\00:47:11.23 It was envy that moved the brothers of Joseph 00:47:12.33\00:47:17.07 to sell him as a slave. 00:47:17.20\00:47:19.00 They hoped to prevent him from becoming greater 00:47:19.33\00:47:23.41 than themselves. And when he was carried to Egypt 00:47:23.54\00:47:27.48 they flattered themselves that they were to be no more 00:47:27.71\00:47:31.38 troubled with his dreams... that they had removed 00:47:31.41\00:47:34.95 all possibility of their fulfillment. 00:47:34.98\00:47:37.32 But, their own course was overruled by God 00:47:37.55\00:47:42.29 to bring about the very event that they designed to hinder. 00:47:42.42\00:47:47.23 So the Jewish priests and elders were jealous of Christ 00:47:47.60\00:47:51.00 fearing that He would attract the attention of the people 00:47:51.43\00:47:54.40 from them. They put Him to death 00:47:54.44\00:47:57.44 to prevent Him from becoming King 00:47:57.57\00:48:00.21 but they were thus bringing about this very result. 00:48:00.44\00:48:04.08 Joseph, through his bondage in Egypt, became a savior 00:48:04.41\00:48:09.12 to his father's family. Yet this fact did not lessen 00:48:09.15\00:48:13.22 the guilt of his brothers. 00:48:13.25\00:48:14.79 So the crucifixion of Christ by His enemies 00:48:14.92\00:48:17.99 made Him the Redeemer of mankind, the Savior of the 00:48:18.13\00:48:21.60 fallen race and Ruler over the whole world. 00:48:21.63\00:48:24.40 But the crime of His murderers was just as heinous as though 00:48:25.13\00:48:29.74 God's providential hand had not controlled events 00:48:29.87\00:48:33.34 for His own glory and for the good of man. 00:48:33.48\00:48:37.11 As Joseph was sold to the heathen by his own brothers 00:48:37.55\00:48:42.02 so Christ was sold to His bitterest enemies by one of His 00:48:42.15\00:48:46.49 disciples. Joseph was falsely accused and thrust into prison 00:48:46.52\00:48:51.06 because of his virtue. So Christ was despised and rejected 00:48:51.09\00:48:54.83 because His righteous, self-denying life was a rebuke 00:48:54.96\00:48:58.53 to sin. And though guilty of no wrong, He was condemned 00:48:58.67\00:49:03.14 upon the testimony of false witnesses. 00:49:03.27\00:49:06.07 And Joseph's patience and meekness under injustice 00:49:06.41\00:49:09.81 and oppression, his ready for- giveness and noble benevolence 00:49:09.94\00:49:13.58 towards his unnatural brothers 00:49:13.72\00:49:16.25 represents the Savior's uncomplaining endurance of the 00:49:16.38\00:49:19.99 malice and abuse of wicked men 00:49:20.12\00:49:22.19 and His forgiveness - not only of His murderers 00:49:22.42\00:49:26.03 but of all who have come to Him confessing their sins 00:49:26.16\00:49:29.73 and seeking pardon. " 00:49:29.86\00:49:32.17 And so the life of Joseph is a beautiful illustration 00:49:32.60\00:49:36.91 of the life of Jesus Christ. 00:49:37.04\00:49:38.77 As we began our study today we noticed in Luke chapter 24 00:49:39.01\00:49:43.51 that Moses, the prophets, the writings, the Psalms 00:49:43.65\00:49:48.58 all give witness to Jesus Christ. 00:49:48.72\00:49:51.12 The story of Joseph is a beautiful prefiguring 00:49:51.35\00:49:54.59 of the life of Jesus. 00:49:54.72\00:49:56.79 But there's one more point which I would like to underline 00:49:57.13\00:50:00.36 which is particularly significant, 00:50:00.50\00:50:02.50 and that is that Joseph - through what he did - 00:50:02.73\00:50:07.97 actually made it possible for the One greater than Joseph 00:50:08.10\00:50:13.88 to come to this world to save His people. 00:50:14.01\00:50:16.98 Let me just go through this very quickly. 00:50:17.41\00:50:19.71 You wonder why Joseph - 00:50:22.22\00:50:26.62 being such a good young man - 00:50:26.76\00:50:28.82 was taken as a slave to Egypt 00:50:28.96\00:50:32.36 and then he ended up in prison because he was faithful to God 00:50:32.49\00:50:36.87 and obeyed God's law. 00:50:37.00\00:50:38.80 You wonder that is until you see the full development 00:50:39.03\00:50:41.94 of the story. The fact is that 00:50:41.97\00:50:44.71 there was a prophecy in Genesis 00:50:44.84\00:50:46.27 chapter 15 and verses 13-15 00:50:46.31\00:50:48.71 that said that Israel 00:50:49.04\00:50:52.85 would be in a strange land, a land not theirs, 00:50:52.98\00:50:57.22 for 400 years. 00:50:57.35\00:50:58.89 And then after 400 years 00:50:59.32\00:51:01.72 they would come out of that strange land which would be 00:51:01.76\00:51:05.06 Egypt to go back to the land of Canaan. 00:51:05.09\00:51:08.43 Do you know that the story of Joseph actually made that 00:51:09.70\00:51:12.87 prophecy be fulfilled? 00:51:12.90\00:51:15.10 Because it was necessary for Jacob and his family 00:51:16.00\00:51:19.07 to move to Egypt. 00:51:19.21\00:51:20.98 Because if God was going to deliver them from Egypt 00:51:21.41\00:51:23.98 400 years after God gave this prophecy 00:51:24.11\00:51:26.61 they would have had to be in Egypt. 00:51:26.75\00:51:28.85 Now you say: "Why would they have to come to Egypt? 00:51:29.18\00:51:31.55 Why not leave them in Canaan? " 00:51:31.79\00:51:33.69 There was a very special purpose, and that is that 00:51:34.12\00:51:36.96 God needed to establish a nation in the land of Canaan. 00:51:37.09\00:51:41.03 And He knew that if Abraham and his descendants 00:51:41.36\00:51:45.43 stayed in Canaan, they would be corrupted by the influences 00:51:45.47\00:51:49.10 of Canaan... totally corrupted by the influences of Canaan. 00:51:49.14\00:51:53.24 And so God said: "I will lead the people down to Egypt 00:51:54.01\00:51:57.55 to shield them from growing as a nation in an environment 00:51:57.68\00:52:02.25 where wickedness is prevalent. " 00:52:02.38\00:52:04.49 But there's even more. 00:52:05.49\00:52:07.56 When they get down to Egypt Pharaoh says to Joseph 00:52:07.72\00:52:12.39 "You know, your father and your family can live 00:52:12.53\00:52:16.46 in the best part of the land in Goshen. " 00:52:16.60\00:52:19.70 By the way, do you know why Pharaoh did that? 00:52:20.04\00:52:22.27 He did that because - we're told in Genesis - 00:52:22.50\00:52:25.57 that the Egyptians did not live in the same environment 00:52:25.71\00:52:29.21 with farmers... with agricultural people. 00:52:29.34\00:52:33.11 We'll deal with this a little bit more when we have 00:52:33.15\00:52:34.88 our second study of Joseph. 00:52:34.92\00:52:36.48 And so what happened is because the Egyptians did not 00:52:36.82\00:52:40.12 intermingle with people who worked the land 00:52:40.26\00:52:43.73 Israel in the land of Goshen - this very prosperous land - 00:52:43.86\00:52:48.06 was able to thrive and to grow 00:52:48.20\00:52:51.43 and to proliferate without all of the evil influences 00:52:51.57\00:52:56.17 of the Egyptians totally corrupting them 00:52:56.30\00:52:58.97 and making them lose their identity. 00:52:59.11\00:53:01.58 In other words, they could grow into a huge nation 00:53:01.81\00:53:04.75 without the evil influences of Canaan, 00:53:04.78\00:53:07.35 without the evil influences - although they were influenced 00:53:07.48\00:53:10.42 to a certain point but not totally - 00:53:10.55\00:53:12.75 but without the evil influences of the Egyptians. 00:53:12.89\00:53:17.03 And of course they grew into a huge nation there. 00:53:17.16\00:53:22.03 And exactly on time God delivered them from the land 00:53:22.26\00:53:26.90 of Egypt and took them to Canaan... where the Seed 00:53:26.94\00:53:31.27 was going to be born later on in history. 00:53:31.41\00:53:35.14 By the way, God's providence is marvelous in this story. 00:53:35.38\00:53:39.98 You see, for example, Joseph going down into Egypt, 00:53:40.98\00:53:46.25 being a slave, being thrown into prison. 00:53:47.32\00:53:50.99 And you have the dreams that the baker and the cupbearer 00:53:51.99\00:53:57.47 of Pharaoh have. To make a long story short 00:53:57.60\00:54:01.44 the cupbearer goes out and for two years he forgets 00:54:01.57\00:54:04.27 to mention Joseph's name 00:54:04.51\00:54:06.21 because it wasn't time. 00:54:06.34\00:54:07.41 And then of course two years later Pharaoh has these dreams. 00:54:07.64\00:54:10.88 These dreams about 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine. 00:54:11.11\00:54:14.88 Actually God is revealing to Pharaoh and to Joseph 00:54:15.02\00:54:19.82 that it's the devil's intention to cause this famine to starve 00:54:19.95\00:54:23.93 Jacob and his family to death 00:54:24.06\00:54:25.63 because from Jacob and his family will come the Seed. 00:54:25.86\00:54:28.76 You can find that in Genesis 45 in verses 5-7. 00:54:29.00\00:54:32.40 See, God knows the end from the beginning. 00:54:32.43\00:54:34.00 He knew what the devil was up to and He allowed the devil to 00:54:34.24\00:54:36.84 cause the famine. But God sent Joseph down to Egypt 00:54:36.87\00:54:42.48 so that Joseph could make provision during the 7 years 00:54:42.71\00:54:46.95 of plenty so that when the famine came 00:54:46.98\00:54:50.95 there would be enough provision for Jacob and his family 00:54:51.19\00:54:55.09 to come down to Egypt and to not lose their lives 00:54:55.22\00:54:59.49 so that the holy line would continue and eventually 00:54:59.73\00:55:03.77 the Messiah could be born. 00:55:03.90\00:55:06.07 Isn't it marvelous the way the providence of God works? 00:55:06.30\00:55:09.74 You know, Joseph could have whined and he could have 00:55:09.97\00:55:12.54 complained. He could have said: "All I do is get raw deals. 00:55:12.57\00:55:16.38 I'm faithful to God and my brothers hate me without cause 00:55:16.61\00:55:19.88 and they're envious of me with no reason. 00:55:20.02\00:55:22.42 And here they sell me into slavery in Egypt. 00:55:22.65\00:55:26.99 And not only do they sell me into slavery, but because 00:55:27.22\00:55:30.03 I'm obedient to God's law I end up in prison. 00:55:30.16\00:55:33.03 What use is it to be faithful to God? " 00:55:33.16\00:55:35.70 But Joseph knew that God had a plan. 00:55:36.03\00:55:39.87 And Joseph did not make plans for himself. 00:55:40.70\00:55:43.10 He allowed God to unfold His plans for him. 00:55:43.34\00:55:47.21 It was the same with Jesus. 00:55:47.44\00:55:49.81 The Father had choreographed the life of Christ, and each day 00:55:50.05\00:55:54.15 the Father revealed to Jesus His plans to Jesus. 00:55:54.18\00:55:57.39 And Jesus walked in the steps that His Father had traced. 00:55:57.52\00:56:02.09 And so it can be with us. 00:56:02.32\00:56:06.16 You know, if we trust the Lord 00:56:06.59\00:56:08.76 no matter what tribulations and trials and problems that 00:56:09.00\00:56:11.63 we have in our lives, if we learn from the life of Joseph 00:56:11.67\00:56:15.00 and from the life of Jesus... We might not understand 00:56:15.14\00:56:17.71 everything that's happening in our lives 00:56:17.84\00:56:19.64 but we can say: "Father, I trust You. 00:56:19.77\00:56:22.14 I will walk in the path that You have established for me. 00:56:22.28\00:56:25.71 Some day I know that I will understand 00:56:25.95\00:56:28.58 and as I look back I will say: 'Thank you, Lord, 00:56:28.82\00:56:33.52 for doing things in Your way. 00:56:33.56\00:56:35.86 I wouldn't have had it happen any differently. ' " 00:56:35.99\00:56:40.23 You know, we would choose no path for ourselves 00:56:40.46\00:56:42.86 different than the path God chose for us 00:56:45.60\00:56:50.31 if we, like God, could see the end from the beginning. 00:56:50.44\00:56:55.41 And so let's learn from Joseph 00:56:55.74\00:56:58.21 and let's learn to be humble and meek of heart. 00:56:59.25\00:57:02.38 How about it? 00:57:02.62\00:57:04.19
