Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:01:15.15\00:01:16.50 Father in heaven, what a joy it is 00:01:17.60\00:01:19.82 to come into Your presence 00:01:20.02\00:01:21.48 to study Your Holy Word. 00:01:21.78\00:01:23.33 We ask that as we study the story of Joseph 00:01:24.12\00:01:26.89 as a type or a symbol of the life of Christ 00:01:28.02\00:01:31.65 that Your Holy Spirit will be with us to instruct us. 00:01:32.52\00:01:35.59 Teach us the lessons which will be useful 00:01:36.19\00:01:39.00 in our personal walk with Jesus, 00:01:39.20\00:01:41.20 and we thank you for the promise of Your presence. 00:01:41.60\00:01:44.19 In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen. 00:01:44.59\00:01:48.52 It was the afternoon 00:01:50.35\00:01:51.93 of the resurrection, 00:01:52.03\00:01:53.63 and 2 of the followers of Jesus, 00:01:54.54\00:01:57.38 not of His 12 disciples but two of the followers of Jesus 00:01:57.48\00:02:01.45 were walking to a little village relatively near Jerusalem 00:02:01.65\00:02:07.16 called Emmaus. 00:02:07.37\00:02:09.41 And as these two men were walking to Emmaus 00:02:09.71\00:02:13.79 Jesus - who had resurrected from the dead that morning - 00:02:14.93\00:02:19.01 actually caught up to them and started walking with them. 00:02:19.31\00:02:24.39 You can find this story in Luke chapter 24. 00:02:24.89\00:02:29.10 And we're going to read a couple of verses from there 00:02:29.50\00:02:31.76 in a few moments, but I want you to catch the picture. 00:02:31.96\00:02:34.29 And so Jesus catches up to these two men that are walking 00:02:35.31\00:02:38.44 to Emmaus and He says to them: 00:02:38.55\00:02:41.20 "What is it that you're talking about? 00:02:41.40\00:02:43.97 And why are your faces so sad? " 00:02:44.27\00:02:47.61 And, of course, the two men look at Jesus 00:02:48.01\00:02:52.65 and if they lived today they probably would have said 00:02:52.85\00:02:56.29 "What planet have you been on for the last three days? 00:02:56.69\00:03:00.64 Haven't you known what has happened 00:03:00.94\00:03:04.64 in the city of Jerusalem during these last three days? 00:03:04.74\00:03:08.73 Impossible that you shouldn't know about it if you were 00:03:09.92\00:03:12.97 in this region or in this area. " 00:03:13.07\00:03:15.39 And then in Luke chapter 24 and verse 21 00:03:16.41\00:03:19.42 we hear the disappointment of these men. 00:03:19.72\00:03:23.15 Actually I want to read Luke chapter 24 00:03:23.45\00:03:26.16 and verse 21. You can almost hear it in their voice 00:03:26.36\00:03:30.94 as we read this verse. 00:03:31.24\00:03:33.29 It says there in verse 21: 00:03:33.49\00:03:35.80 "But we were hoping that it was He 00:03:36.20\00:03:40.65 who was going to redeem Israel. 00:03:40.85\00:03:44.36 Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day 00:03:44.66\00:03:48.53 since these things happened. " 00:03:48.84\00:03:51.43 We thought that this Man was going to redeem Israel 00:03:51.83\00:03:55.42 and now is the third day since He was crucified. 00:03:55.72\00:04:00.15 You can hear the disappointment in their voices. 00:04:00.46\00:04:03.89 And then, of course, Jesus spoke to them 00:04:04.19\00:04:07.92 in direct terms. And I would like to read 00:04:08.12\00:04:11.60 His words in Luke chapter 24 00:04:11.80\00:04:15.17 and verses 25 through 27. 00:04:15.37\00:04:18.99 Actually, this is quite a rebuke of Jesus. 00:04:19.29\00:04:22.79 Notice what He says in Luke 24 and verse 25. 00:04:23.09\00:04:26.93 "Then He said to them: 'O foolish ones, 00:04:28.19\00:04:33.30 and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have 00:04:33.60\00:04:38.37 spoken. Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things 00:04:38.57\00:04:43.45 and to enter into His glory? ' " 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.15 And now notice verse 27: 00:04:46.45\00:04:48.46 "And beginning at Moses 00:04:48.66\00:04:51.93 and all the prophets He expounded to them 00:04:52.33\00:04:57.68 in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself. " 00:04:57.89\00:05:03.82 We have three categories that are mentioned here by Jesus. 00:05:04.22\00:05:08.00 Moses, the prophets, and the scriptures or the writings. 00:05:08.30\00:05:13.20 These are the very 3 divisions that the Jews had established 00:05:13.70\00:05:17.48 for the Old Testament. 00:05:17.58\00:05:19.01 The law of Moses... 00:05:19.31\00:05:20.42 the prophets were the nebeim 00:05:20.52\00:05:22.92 and the writings were the ketubim. 00:05:23.12\00:05:25.76 In other words, Jesus is saying 00:05:26.06\00:05:28.62 "I am at the center of the writings of Moses; 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.44 I am at the center of the writings of all of the prophets; 00:05:31.65\00:05:34.59 I am at the center of all of the rest of the Old Testament. " 00:05:34.80\00:05:38.39 He expounded unto them the things in the scriptures 00:05:38.70\00:05:43.62 concerning Himself. 00:05:43.93\00:05:46.29 Now I want you to notice how these men felt 00:05:46.59\00:05:50.17 after Jesus spoke these words to them. 00:05:50.37\00:05:53.42 Luke 24 and verses 30-32. 00:05:53.72\00:05:57.88 "Now it came to pass as He sat at the table with them 00:05:58.18\00:06:03.19 that He took bread, blessed and broke it, 00:06:03.49\00:06:07.11 and gave it to them. 00:06:07.31\00:06:08.81 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him, 00:06:09.12\00:06:12.45 and He vanished from their sight. 00:06:12.75\00:06:15.42 And they said to one another: 'Did not our hearts burn 00:06:16.18\00:06:22.11 within us while He talked with us on the road 00:06:22.21\00:06:27.12 and while He opened the scriptures to us? ' " 00:06:27.32\00:06:32.62 Notice that when Jesus opened the scriptures 00:06:33.12\00:06:35.65 and revealed Himself to them from the scriptures 00:06:35.85\00:06:39.52 they burned in their hearts because now they looked at the 00:06:39.75\00:06:44.39 scriptures from a different perspective. 00:06:44.49\00:06:47.04 A little bit later on Jesus was in the upper room 00:06:47.34\00:06:52.59 with His disciples. 00:06:52.79\00:06:54.50 And I want you to notice what He said to His disciples 00:06:54.80\00:06:57.87 in Luke chapter 24 and verses 44 and 45. 00:06:58.07\00:07:04.01 Luke 24 and verses 44 and 45. 00:07:04.41\00:07:08.71 "Then He said to them: 00:07:09.11\00:07:11.65 'These are the words which I spoke to you 00:07:11.95\00:07:15.17 while I was still with you: 00:07:15.37\00:07:17.20 that all things must be fulfilled which were written 00:07:17.40\00:07:22.89 in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms 00:07:23.09\00:07:28.78 concerning Me. ' And He opened their understanding 00:07:28.98\00:07:33.92 that they might comprehend the scriptures. " 00:07:34.12\00:07:38.28 We find in these verses that the center of the scriptures 00:07:39.61\00:07:44.02 of the Old Testament is Jesus. 00:07:44.22\00:07:46.74 Whether it be the writings of Moses, 00:07:47.04\00:07:49.33 whether it be the writings of the prophets, 00:07:49.53\00:07:51.82 whether it be the writings as such 00:07:52.02\00:07:54.99 in the Old Testament - whatever is not Moses and the 00:07:55.19\00:07:57.73 prophets, whether it be the Psalms... 00:07:57.93\00:08:00.85 Jesus says that the scriptures are a revelation of Himself. 00:08:01.15\00:08:06.18 On every page of the Old Testament 00:08:07.79\00:08:11.53 we find a revelation of Jesus. 00:08:11.73\00:08:14.76 Now today we are going to study the story of Joseph. 00:08:15.07\00:08:19.94 Joseph... as a type of Jesus Christ. 00:08:20.24\00:08:23.93 We're going to find a series of amazing parallels 00:08:24.33\00:08:27.48 between Joseph and Jesus. 00:08:27.68\00:08:29.19 We're going to actually see that the life of Joseph 00:08:29.49\00:08:32.25 was a pattern or an illustration or a type 00:08:32.45\00:08:35.64 of the life that Jesus would live later on in human history. 00:08:35.84\00:08:40.54 Actually approximately 1,700 years later. 00:08:40.67\00:08:44.56 Now let's begin our study of the life of Joseph 00:08:44.73\00:08:48.09 in Genesis chapter 37 and verse 3. 00:08:48.29\00:08:52.03 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 3. 00:08:52.33\00:08:56.32 Here we're told this: 00:08:57.35\00:08:59.13 So you have what we might call "the ancient of days" 00:09:20.05\00:09:23.82 who has a beloved son 00:09:24.12\00:09:26.71 whom he loves above all of his other sons. 00:09:27.01\00:09:30.90 And this son's name is Joseph. 00:09:31.20\00:09:33.95 Now we all know that Joseph had two dreams. 00:09:34.05\00:09:38.70 And in these dreams basically he told his father 00:09:39.00\00:09:43.46 and his brothers that someday they were going to come 00:09:43.66\00:09:47.10 and they were going to bow before his feet. 00:09:47.30\00:09:50.11 Notice Genesis chapter 37 and verse 10. 00:09:50.41\00:09:54.74 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 10. 00:09:55.04\00:09:58.06 By the way, this riled his brothers. 00:09:59.07\00:10:01.65 It says there in chapter 37 and verse 10: 00:10:01.95\00:10:05.53 "Are you saying that we're going to come and we're going to 00:10:24.98\00:10:27.53 bow before you? " is what Jacob 00:10:27.63\00:10:29.97 is saying. And of course, 00:10:30.07\00:10:31.56 we know from this story 00:10:31.67\00:10:33.09 that his brothers were very very 00:10:33.29\00:10:35.62 angry at him saying that they would come and bow at his feet. 00:10:35.72\00:10:40.82 In fact, we're told in Genesis 37 that his brothers 00:10:41.12\00:10:44.39 hated him. Notice Genesis chapter 37... 00:10:44.59\00:10:48.37 Genesis chapter 37 and verses 4 and 5. 00:10:48.67\00:10:52.63 It says here: 00:10:53.03\00:10:54.85 And then it says: "Now Joseph had a dream 00:11:07.79\00:11:11.05 and he told it to his brothers 00:11:11.26\00:11:13.28 and they hated him even more. " 00:11:13.48\00:11:15.89 The idea of them coming and bowing before Joseph; 00:11:16.39\00:11:19.27 the idea that he was the beloved son; 00:11:19.47\00:11:22.40 and by the way, the fact that the life of Joseph 00:11:22.70\00:11:26.00 was exemplary and condemned their sinfulness 00:11:26.20\00:11:30.83 led them to hate their brother. 00:11:31.03\00:11:34.07 In fact, they not only hated their brother because he was 00:11:34.47\00:11:37.67 the beloved son and because he said that they were going to 00:11:37.77\00:11:41.75 come and bow before his feet and because he had a sterling 00:11:41.85\00:11:46.01 character which rebuked their sinfulness, 00:11:46.21\00:11:48.62 but they also envied their brother 00:11:48.82\00:11:52.79 because of these facts. 00:11:53.09\00:11:54.65 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 37 and verse 11. 00:11:54.95\00:11:59.06 It says there: "And his brothers envied him 00:11:59.36\00:12:03.91 but his father kept the matter in mind. " 00:12:04.11\00:12:08.96 And so his brothers hate him. 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.15 His brothers envy him 00:12:11.45\00:12:13.70 because of his favored position with his father 00:12:14.00\00:12:17.04 because he's the beloved son. 00:12:17.24\00:12:19.34 Now immediately we see the parallel with Jesus. 00:12:19.64\00:12:22.97 Jesus also is the special Son of His Father. 00:12:24.02\00:12:29.01 Jesus also had a sterling character which rebuked 00:12:29.31\00:12:34.11 the sinfulness of His brothers that He came to save. 00:12:34.31\00:12:38.43 Also, those that He came to minister among 00:12:39.47\00:12:42.71 were greatly aggravated when Jesus spoke about 00:12:42.92\00:12:47.53 Him being a King and Him ruling over the earth. 00:12:47.73\00:12:52.11 In fact, we find in Luke chapter 19 and verse 14 00:12:52.99\00:12:58.28 that they did not accept the idea that Jesus 00:12:58.52\00:13:02.29 was going to reign or rule over them. 00:13:02.49\00:13:05.23 Luke chapter 19 and verse 14 says this: 00:13:05.53\00:13:10.51 "But His citizens hated Him... " 00:13:10.74\00:13:15.33 Notice that. 00:13:15.53\00:13:17.92 "and sent a delegation after Him saying 00:13:18.22\00:13:21.52 'We will not have this Man to reign over us. 00:13:21.72\00:13:26.43 We will not accept Him as King. 00:13:27.40\00:13:30.37 He will not rule over us. ' " 00:13:30.40\00:13:32.94 In fact, we find in scripture that Jesus was envied 00:13:33.34\00:13:38.38 by those that He came in contact with. 00:13:38.58\00:13:41.32 Notice Matthew chapter 27 and verse 18. 00:13:41.62\00:13:45.43 Matthew chapter 27 and verse 18. 00:13:45.74\00:13:49.79 In fact, those He came to save envied Him 00:13:50.09\00:13:53.28 because of His special position. 00:13:53.48\00:13:55.87 Matthew chapter 27 and verse 18 says this: 00:13:55.98\00:14:00.60 "For He knew that they had handed Him over... " 00:14:02.62\00:14:07.29 this is speaking about Pilate... 00:14:07.32\00:14:09.56 "that they had handed over Jesus because of... " What? 00:14:09.76\00:14:13.46 "because of envy. " 00:14:13.76\00:14:16.41 And so Jesus - the beloved Son of His Father - 00:14:17.33\00:14:19.97 is hated by His own brothers. 00:14:20.27\00:14:23.40 The say: "We will not allow this Man to rule over us. " 00:14:23.70\00:14:26.54 They hate the fact that He's the beloved Son of the Father 00:14:26.94\00:14:30.44 and they hate His sterling character which rebukes 00:14:30.65\00:14:34.00 their sinfulness. 00:14:34.11\00:14:35.99 Now it's interesting to notice that Abraham 00:14:36.29\00:14:39.33 the father... or rather Jacob the father sends his son 00:14:39.53\00:14:44.14 Joseph to Joseph's brothers. 00:14:44.34\00:14:46.99 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 37 and verse 13. 00:14:47.29\00:14:51.84 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 13. 00:14:52.14\00:14:55.84 The father sends the son to his brothers. 00:14:56.15\00:14:58.88 To a far country incidentally. 00:14:59.18\00:15:01.21 Notice Genesis chapter 37 and verse 13. 00:15:01.51\00:15:07.04 It says here: 00:15:07.54\00:15:08.83 Notice that the father is planning to send Joseph 00:15:27.76\00:15:32.01 to his brothers, and Joseph says to his father 00:15:32.21\00:15:35.83 "Your will be done. " 00:15:36.03\00:15:38.14 And so Joseph leaves his father's house 00:15:38.54\00:15:41.03 and he travels to a far land to minister to his brothers. 00:15:41.23\00:15:46.43 And by the way, his brothers are lost. 00:15:46.73\00:15:49.33 He actually goes out to seek them. 00:15:49.63\00:15:51.53 And he has to stop along the way and ask: "Where 00:15:51.83\00:15:55.64 are my brothers? I'm seeking for my brothers. " 00:15:55.84\00:15:59.04 And so he leaves his father's house; 00:15:59.34\00:16:02.35 he goes to a far land; 00:16:02.55\00:16:04.41 he's sent to seek his brothers who are lost. 00:16:04.61\00:16:07.92 Dare I say that this is the very same thing 00:16:08.42\00:16:13.10 which happened with Jesus? 00:16:13.30\00:16:14.81 Notice the gospel of Luke chapter 19 and verse 10. 00:16:15.11\00:16:20.10 Luke chapter 19 and verse 10. 00:16:20.41\00:16:23.26 This is the conclusion of the Zacchaeus episode, 00:16:23.67\00:16:27.07 and notice the terminology that is used. 00:16:27.37\00:16:30.41 Luke chapter 19 and verse 10. 00:16:30.71\00:16:33.63 "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save 00:16:34.74\00:16:40.64 that which was lost. " 00:16:40.67\00:16:43.27 And so Jesus Christ is sent by His Father to a far land 00:16:43.67\00:16:48.32 to seek His brothers who are lost 00:16:48.52\00:16:51.59 just like Joseph was sent by his father 00:16:51.89\00:16:55.07 to a far land to seek his brothers who were also lost. 00:16:55.27\00:17:00.72 And when God the Father said to Jesus: 00:17:01.05\00:17:02.95 "You should go down and take My gift to Your brothers" 00:17:03.15\00:17:06.92 Jesus said just like Joseph... He said: "Father, 00:17:07.12\00:17:11.42 I am here. Your will be done. " 00:17:11.72\00:17:15.69 But we're told in scripture that when Joseph takes the gift 00:17:16.19\00:17:20.77 of his father to his brothers 00:17:20.97\00:17:24.10 his brothers actually plotted to kill him 00:17:24.30\00:17:27.59 because they hated him. 00:17:27.79\00:17:28.99 Notice Genesis chapter 37 and verses 18 and 19. 00:17:29.29\00:17:33.80 Genesis 37 and verses 18 and 19. 00:17:34.10\00:17:38.85 It says here: 00:17:39.15\00:17:40.63 "Then they said to one another: 00:17:51.33\00:17:53.34 'Look, the dreamer is coming. ' " 00:17:53.44\00:17:56.94 Notice that it is said here that when Joseph 00:17:57.24\00:18:02.27 sees his brothers afar off 00:18:02.57\00:18:05.09 his brothers whom he came to 00:18:05.19\00:18:07.18 bless with the gifts from the 00:18:07.28\00:18:08.75 father actually are filled with 00:18:08.85\00:18:11.02 hatred against him and they plot 00:18:11.13\00:18:13.53 to kill him. 00:18:13.74\00:18:15.05 Is this true also about Jesus? 00:18:15.55\00:18:18.32 In John chapter 1 and verse 11 00:18:18.72\00:18:21.85 we are told that Jesus: 00:18:22.06\00:18:24.54 We also notice in John chapter 15 and verse 25 00:18:30.41\00:18:34.85 a very interesting remark. 00:18:35.05\00:18:37.65 John chapter 15 and verse 25. 00:18:38.15\00:18:42.45 Here Jesus actually is being referred to. 00:18:42.75\00:18:46.21 He says this in verse 25: 00:18:46.51\00:18:48.54 Did Joseph's brothers really have any true reason 00:19:03.32\00:19:06.90 to hate their brother? Absolutely not. 00:19:07.11\00:19:09.53 They hated him without cause. 00:19:09.83\00:19:12.20 And His own hate Him without cause. 00:19:16.65\00:19:20.34 Notice how the story of Joseph is picked up 00:19:20.64\00:19:23.72 also in Matthew 21 and verses 37 and 38. 00:19:23.92\00:19:28.74 Matthew chapter 21 and verses 37 and 38. 00:19:28.84\00:19:33.03 This is the famous parable of the vineyard workers. 00:19:33.23\00:19:37.17 Matthew chapter 21 and verses 37 and 38. 00:19:37.67\00:19:43.28 So just like with Joseph he came to his brothers 00:20:09.36\00:20:12.63 sent by his father and he was hated without cause 00:20:12.83\00:20:15.93 by his brothers. They envied him. 00:20:16.13\00:20:18.45 So when Jesus was sent by His Father to His brothers 00:20:18.75\00:20:22.09 they received Him not. 00:20:22.29\00:20:23.49 They hated Him without cause. 00:20:23.79\00:20:25.72 They delivered Him because of envy according to scripture. 00:20:26.02\00:20:29.08 And they plotted to kill Jesus just like Joseph's brothers 00:20:29.28\00:20:32.93 plotted to kill him. 00:20:33.13\00:20:34.50 There's another interesting comparison in this story. 00:20:35.00\00:20:37.91 One of the brothers of Joseph actually wanted to deliver 00:20:38.31\00:20:43.59 Joseph from the hands of his brothers. What was his name? 00:20:43.79\00:20:48.15 His name was Reuben. 00:20:48.45\00:20:50.01 Notice Genesis 37 and verses 21 and 22. 00:20:50.31\00:20:54.66 Genesis 37 and verses 21 and 22. 00:20:55.06\00:20:59.54 But Reuben lacked moral backbone. 00:21:25.04\00:21:28.29 At the very moment he should have said to the brothers 00:21:28.69\00:21:31.51 "This is wrong... we should not do this. " 00:21:31.81\00:21:35.36 And he should have delivered Joseph and sent him back 00:21:35.76\00:21:39.17 to his father. But he contemporized. 00:21:39.27\00:21:42.41 He says: "Well, I'll let them cast him into this pit here 00:21:42.61\00:21:46.33 and then a little bit later on I will come 00:21:46.53\00:21:49.11 and I will deliver him. " 00:21:49.31\00:21:51.03 He had no moral backbone to stand for the right. 00:21:51.33\00:21:54.24 Now let me ask you: was there an individual 00:21:54.64\00:21:57.02 in the case of Christ that tried to deliver Jesus 00:21:57.22\00:22:00.34 and COULD HAVE delivered Jesus but had no moral backbone? 00:22:00.54\00:22:04.49 Of course. What was his name? 00:22:05.43\00:22:07.53 His name was Pontius Pilate. 00:22:07.73\00:22:10.29 Notice John chapter 19 and verse 12. 00:22:10.79\00:22:14.63 John 19:12. He did everything possible 00:22:14.93\00:22:17.43 to deliver Jesus but he did not take a stand. 00:22:17.63\00:22:20.22 John chapter 19 and verse 12 00:22:20.53\00:22:23.74 is one of the verses that speaks about Pontius Pilate's 00:22:23.84\00:22:26.75 intention of delivering Christ. 00:22:26.95\00:22:29.17 It says here in verse 12: 00:22:29.47\00:22:31.63 "From then on Pilate sought to release Him 00:22:31.83\00:22:35.68 but the Jews cried out saying: 'If you let this Man go, 00:22:35.88\00:22:39.71 you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself 00:22:39.91\00:22:43.35 a king speaks against Caesar. ' " 00:22:43.45\00:22:45.91 And so instead of delivering Jesus and taking a stand 00:22:46.89\00:22:50.68 at that moment, Pontius Pilate actually allowed 00:22:50.88\00:22:54.99 Jesus to be delivered to be killed. 00:22:55.09\00:22:58.58 Another interesting parallel between Joseph and Jesus 00:22:59.42\00:23:02.73 is the fact that Joseph was stripped of his garments 00:23:02.93\00:23:06.60 by his brothers. Notice what we find in Genesis 37:23. 00:23:06.80\00:23:12.55 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 23. 00:23:12.85\00:23:16.72 We find here what his brothers did to him. It says there: 00:23:17.97\00:23:23.14 Question: was Jesus also stripped of His garments? 00:23:35.70\00:23:40.18 Notice what we find in Matthew chapter 27 00:23:40.58\00:23:43.66 and verse 28. Matthew chapter 27 and verse 28. 00:23:43.86\00:23:49.71 We're told here as Jesus is in Pilate's court: 00:23:50.01\00:23:53.99 "And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. " 00:24:01.41\00:24:05.55 We're going to come back to the scarlet robe in a moment. 00:24:05.75\00:24:07.67 Notice that they stripped Him of His garment and they put 00:24:07.97\00:24:11.46 a scarlet or a red robe upon Him. 00:24:11.56\00:24:14.59 And so in both cases Joseph and Jesus 00:24:14.79\00:24:17.77 are stripped of their garments. 00:24:17.98\00:24:20.24 Now it's interesting that Joseph - according to Genesis - 00:24:20.74\00:24:24.67 was cast into an empty pit. 00:24:24.87\00:24:29.16 And the word pit, by the way, can refer to a place 00:24:29.86\00:24:33.47 where dead people are laid. 00:24:33.68\00:24:35.78 In Isaiah 38 and verse 18 it's synonymously used with 00:24:36.08\00:24:40.33 the word Sheol. It's used synonymous with death. 00:24:40.44\00:24:44.45 In other words, his brothers put him in that pit - 00:24:44.69\00:24:47.31 in that empty pit - with the intention probably 00:24:47.61\00:24:50.94 of have him dying in that pit. 00:24:51.14\00:24:53.68 It's interesting that Jesus was buried in an empty tomb. 00:24:54.08\00:24:58.50 Notice Luke chapter 23 and verse 53. 00:24:58.80\00:25:02.68 Luke chapter 23 and verse 53. 00:25:02.98\00:25:06.68 Here we find the following words... speaking about Jesus: 00:25:07.67\00:25:12.84 "Then he took it down, 00:25:13.75\00:25:16.04 wrapped it in them, 00:25:16.45\00:25:19.07 and laid it in a tomb 00:25:19.17\00:25:23.38 that was hewn out of the rock 00:25:23.59\00:25:25.83 where no one had ever lain before. " 00:25:26.03\00:25:29.59 And so Joseph is cast in the pit 00:25:29.99\00:25:32.54 and Jesus is placed in an empty tomb. 00:25:32.84\00:25:35.96 Another interesting parallel between Joseph and Jesus 00:25:36.99\00:25:40.11 is the fact that both of them were sold 00:25:40.31\00:25:44.04 for pieces of silver. 00:25:44.24\00:25:46.01 In the case of Joseph, Joseph was sold for 20 pieces 00:25:46.32\00:25:49.39 of silver. Let's read that in Genesis 37:28. 00:25:49.49\00:25:54.36 Genesis chapter 37 and verse 28. 00:25:54.66\00:25:59.06 Here we find the following words... 00:25:59.47\00:26:01.49 37 and verse 28... it says this: 00:26:01.80\00:26:06.31 "And they took Joseph to Egypt. " 00:26:24.08\00:26:27.30 Now I want you to notice 00:26:27.60\00:26:29.11 what we're told about Jesus. 00:26:29.21\00:26:30.90 Matthew chapter 26 and verse 15. 00:26:31.20\00:26:34.40 Matthew chapter 26 and verse 15. 00:26:34.70\00:26:37.89 And I'm sure that we've read 00:26:37.99\00:26:39.02 this before, but let's go ahead and read it again. 00:26:39.12\00:26:42.16 It says: 00:26:43.16\00:26:44.40 And so Joseph and Jesus are sold for pieces of silver. 00:27:01.40\00:27:05.74 Another interesting parallel between Joseph and Christ 00:27:06.41\00:27:09.54 is the fact that both of their garments were stained in blood. 00:27:09.74\00:27:14.57 Now you say: "How is that? " 00:27:15.59\00:27:17.05 You know what his brothers did with the tunic of Joseph. 00:27:17.35\00:27:20.83 Was the tunic of Joseph dipped in blood? 00:27:31.04\00:27:34.30 Most certainly. 00:27:34.60\00:27:35.90 "Then they sent the tunic of many colors 00:27:36.20\00:27:40.47 and they brought it to their father and said: 00:27:40.67\00:27:43.42 'We have found this. Do you know whether it is your son's 00:27:43.62\00:27:48.05 tunic or not? ' " 00:27:48.25\00:27:49.39 And so the garments of Joseph were stained in blood. 00:27:49.69\00:27:53.66 If you read the gospels, you discover that a scarlet robe 00:27:54.16\00:27:57.63 was placed upon Jesus and then Jesus was beaten. 00:27:57.73\00:28:01.09 And this scarlet robe was filled with the blood of Jesus. 00:28:01.29\00:28:04.56 Actually, that sacrifice of that kid by the brothers of Joseph 00:28:04.86\00:28:09.44 symbolized the sacrifice of Jesus and the fact that 00:28:09.65\00:28:13.51 the garments of Jesus were going to be stained in His blood. 00:28:13.71\00:28:17.19 Now it's also interesting to notice that the father 00:28:18.18\00:28:22.12 of Joseph - Jacob - suffered intensely along with his son. 00:28:22.32\00:28:27.47 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 37 00:28:27.87\00:28:31.23 and verses 34 and 35. 00:28:31.43\00:28:34.43 Genesis 37 and verses 34 and 35. 00:28:34.73\00:28:39.52 It says here: 00:28:39.82\00:28:41.20 If you read the Desire of Ages you'll discover that not only 00:29:08.31\00:29:12.04 did Jesus suffer on the cross but His Father suffered 00:29:12.24\00:29:15.82 right along with Him 00:29:16.02\00:29:17.60 as Jesus suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane 00:29:17.70\00:29:20.46 and as Jesus hung on the cross of Calvary. 00:29:20.66\00:29:24.42 It's also interesting to notice that everything that Joseph did 00:29:25.62\00:29:30.45 prospered in his hand. 00:29:30.65\00:29:32.88 Notice what we find in Genesis chapter 39 00:29:33.09\00:29:36.44 and verse 3. Genesis chapter 39 and verse 3. 00:29:36.64\00:29:42.54 Everything that Joseph did prospered. 00:29:42.84\00:29:45.18 It says there in verse 3: 00:29:45.38\00:29:47.23 "And his master saw that the Lord was with him 00:29:47.43\00:29:51.49 and that the Lord made all he did to prosper in his hand. " 00:29:51.79\00:29:57.35 So notice that everything that the Lord places in Joseph's 00:29:57.65\00:30:00.57 hand Joseph makes to prosper. 00:30:00.67\00:30:04.43 By the way, this is the same thing that is said of Jesus 00:30:04.83\00:30:08.30 as the suffering servant in Isaiah 53 and verse 10. 00:30:08.50\00:30:12.03 Go with me to Isaiah chapter 53 and verse 10 00:30:12.34\00:30:16.39 and notice this wonderful prophecy about Christ 00:30:16.69\00:30:19.95 and how everything that the Father had in plan for Jesus 00:30:20.15\00:30:24.19 would prosper in His hand. 00:30:24.39\00:30:26.40 It says here: "Yet it pleased the Lord 00:30:26.70\00:30:29.91 to bruise Him. He has put Him to grief, 00:30:30.11\00:30:34.20 when you make His soul an offering for sin 00:30:34.51\00:30:38.16 He shall see His seed. He shall prolong His days. 00:30:38.36\00:30:42.58 And the pleasure of the Lord shall... " What? 00:30:43.97\00:30:47.34 "the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. " 00:30:47.55\00:30:51.70 And so as Joseph suffers but everything that he does 00:30:52.11\00:30:55.76 prospers, in the same way Jesus - the suffering servant - 00:30:55.96\00:30:59.98 everything that He performs for the Lord prospers 00:31:00.18\00:31:03.69 in His hands. Now as you look at the life of Joseph 00:31:03.89\00:31:08.04 where his brothers sold him into slavery... 00:31:08.24\00:31:10.06 And by the way, it was as if Joseph had died, 00:31:10.27\00:31:13.68 correct? At least in the mind of the father 00:31:13.98\00:31:16.19 it was like Joseph had died... And in the minds of his brothers 00:31:16.39\00:31:18.91 they had gotten rid of Joseph. And the prophecy that Joseph 00:31:19.31\00:31:23.80 was going to be lord over them according to them was not 00:31:23.83\00:31:26.46 going to be fulfilled. 00:31:26.56\00:31:28.04 The interesting thing is: by the very plot to get rid of Joseph 00:31:28.24\00:31:32.75 Joseph went to a far land 00:31:33.05\00:31:35.75 and he actually became their savior and he saved them 00:31:35.95\00:31:40.29 from death. So their plot to destroy Joseph 00:31:40.39\00:31:43.46 actually became the means for their salvation. 00:31:43.66\00:31:46.98 Let me ask you: in the case of Jesus 00:31:47.48\00:31:50.39 was the plot that was developed against Christ 00:31:50.80\00:31:54.48 and the slaying of Christ and His death on the cross 00:31:54.68\00:31:58.47 the means that God used to save those who crucified Him 00:31:58.67\00:32:04.26 from spiritual death and from everlasting death? 00:32:04.36\00:32:06.96 Yes. They plotted and they actually thought that they had 00:32:07.46\00:32:10.01 gotten rid of Jesus. But actually by their very act 00:32:10.11\00:32:14.06 of trying to get rid of Jesus and slay Jesus 00:32:14.26\00:32:17.19 Jesus became their Savior. 00:32:17.39\00:32:20.71 It's interesting to notice that by what Joseph suffered 00:32:21.01\00:32:25.29 he learned to trust in God. 00:32:25.49\00:32:29.09 In fact, you look at the story as we find it in Genesis 00:32:29.88\00:32:33.45 and Joseph never actually laid plans for his life. 00:32:33.66\00:32:37.83 He relied upon God 00:32:38.33\00:32:40.67 and allowed God to choreograph his life. 00:32:40.88\00:32:43.66 He didn't say: "Well, I'm going to do this, 00:32:44.26\00:32:46.12 I'm going to do that. " He simply cooperated with God, 00:32:46.32\00:32:50.37 walked with God in fulfilling God's will 00:32:50.58\00:32:54.23 as God revealed His plans to him step by step. 00:32:54.43\00:32:58.57 And interestingly enough, by Joseph becoming a servant 00:32:58.80\00:33:03.50 in Egypt he became qualified then to be lord. 00:33:03.70\00:33:07.25 As he was a servant he learned obedience. 00:33:07.65\00:33:11.34 He learned dependence upon God, and as a result of this 00:33:11.64\00:33:16.05 when he became lord he was qualified to fulfill his duties 00:33:16.25\00:33:21.17 as lord and as master. 00:33:21.38\00:33:23.74 So it is with Jesus. You see, Jesus became a servant. 00:33:24.04\00:33:29.21 And by becoming a servant He became qualified to be Lord 00:33:29.61\00:33:34.38 over His people. Jesus did not lay plans for Himself. 00:33:34.58\00:33:38.69 He simply cooperated with His Father's plan day by day. 00:33:39.10\00:33:43.69 Even though perhaps Jesus didn't understand everything 00:33:43.92\00:33:46.55 that was happening in His life 00:33:46.75\00:33:48.23 He walked step in step with what His Father had 00:33:48.43\00:33:52.05 choreographed for Him. 00:33:52.15\00:33:53.75 In fact, allow me to read you a statement that's found in 00:33:53.95\00:33:56.12 Desire of Ages page 208. 00:33:56.32\00:33:59.76 This is a very well-known statement but very profound. 00:34:00.73\00:34:04.23 It says here: 00:34:04.96\00:34:06.51 Isn't that amazing? 00:34:16.70\00:34:18.01 He was so emptied of self that He made no plans for Himself. 00:34:18.31\00:34:22.49 I'm sure that Joseph didn't understand a lot of things 00:34:34.15\00:34:36.64 that happened with him. In fact, we have another lecture 00:34:36.74\00:34:39.30 coming up in a couple of sessions where we're going to 00:34:39.40\00:34:42.48 discuss God's providence in the story of Joseph. 00:34:42.58\00:34:45.20 You know, I'm sure that Joseph 00:34:45.50\00:34:46.97 didn't particularly understand 00:34:47.17\00:34:48.73 how, because of his sterling 00:34:48.94\00:34:52.68 character and because he was 00:34:52.88\00:34:54.42 beloved by his father, 00:34:54.52\00:34:55.74 he would be sold into slavery. 00:34:55.94\00:34:57.40 That appeared to be an injustice. 00:34:57.61\00:34:59.55 And then because he was faithful in obeying the commandment 00:34:59.85\00:35:02.55 "Thou shalt not commit adultery" 00:35:02.75\00:35:04.11 he ends up in jail... he ends up in prison. 00:35:04.31\00:35:06.63 I don't think that Joseph fully understood everything 00:35:07.13\00:35:10.04 that was happening, but he said: "God has a plan. 00:35:10.14\00:35:12.45 I don't understand the plan but I will some day. 00:35:12.65\00:35:15.32 I'm going to walk step by step 00:35:15.62\00:35:17.16 in the plan that God has laid out for me. " 00:35:17.26\00:35:19.21 And so it was with Jesus. 00:35:19.41\00:35:21.08 Many things happened in His life 00:35:21.39\00:35:22.86 and perhaps when He was going through these things, 00:35:23.06\00:35:25.10 you know, He didn't fully understand everything that was 00:35:25.30\00:35:28.07 happening. But He walked step in step with the plans 00:35:28.17\00:35:31.30 of His Father. And then, of course, Ellen White 00:35:31.50\00:35:34.22 tells us this... speaking about us: 00:35:34.42\00:35:37.91 Now I want to read Hebrews chapter 5 verses 8 and 9 00:35:48.62\00:35:53.29 about Christ. Hebrews chapter 5 verses 8 and 9. 00:35:53.49\00:35:57.69 Do you know that Jesus by becoming a servant 00:35:57.99\00:36:00.49 and by going through His trials and tribulations 00:36:00.69\00:36:03.18 and temptations actually became qualified to be Lord? 00:36:03.38\00:36:07.81 Notice what we find in Hebrews chapter 5... 00:36:08.25\00:36:11.00 Hebrews chapter 5 and let's read verses... 00:36:11.20\00:36:14.68 What did I say? 7 and 8. Hebrews 5... actually verses 00:36:15.46\00:36:20.35 8 and 9. Let's not begin at verse 7. It says in verse 8: 00:36:20.45\00:36:23.74 By the way, the word obedience there would mean 00:36:36.05\00:36:37.92 He learned to depend upon His Father. 00:36:38.13\00:36:41.60 And now notice verse 9: 00:36:42.00\00:36:43.56 Doesn't mean that He wasn't perfect. 00:36:45.62\00:36:46.86 The word perfected there means qualified 00:36:47.06\00:36:50.21 to fulfill His mission because of what He suffered. 00:36:50.42\00:36:53.39 In other words, the sufferings of Jesus, 00:37:02.88\00:37:05.19 the trials and temptations of Jesus, 00:37:05.22\00:37:07.72 became the school where He learned. And He became 00:37:07.93\00:37:11.72 qualified to fulfill His mission as Savior of the human race. 00:37:11.92\00:37:16.73 The same is true of Joseph. 00:37:17.03\00:37:18.81 The things that he suffered, 00:37:19.11\00:37:20.44 the temptations which he resisted, 00:37:20.64\00:37:22.65 qualified Him then to fulfill His mission 00:37:22.85\00:37:26.42 to save his brothers and his father, and to preserve 00:37:26.63\00:37:30.66 incidentally the holy line. 00:37:30.86\00:37:33.31 Now was Joseph tempted severely 00:37:34.10\00:37:38.11 in his life? Well, we have one particular temptation 00:37:38.96\00:37:42.52 when Potiphar's wife tried to entice him into adultery. 00:37:43.42\00:37:46.95 And how did Joseph respond? 00:37:48.56\00:37:50.40 He didn't play with temptation. 00:37:50.70\00:37:52.61 He immediately said: "How can I commit this terrible 00:37:53.01\00:37:57.61 sin against God? " 00:37:57.71\00:38:00.07 How did Jesus meet temptation when Satan came after Christ? 00:38:00.38\00:38:04.56 Jesus did not play with temptation. 00:38:04.76\00:38:07.86 When Satan's temptations came Jesus immediately said what? 00:38:08.10\00:38:12.34 "It is written... " 00:38:12.64\00:38:14.55 Both Joseph and Jesus - through the power of God - 00:38:14.65\00:38:17.98 overcame temptation. 00:38:18.18\00:38:20.88 Now there's another interesting parallel between 00:38:21.18\00:38:24.06 Joseph and Jesus. You know, Joseph, according to the story, 00:38:24.36\00:38:30.08 becomes a servant and then he becomes lord. 00:38:30.28\00:38:34.66 His position as a servant qualified him to become lord. 00:38:36.77\00:38:41.05 That we find in the story of Joseph. 00:38:42.33\00:38:45.05 But do you know that this is exactly the situation 00:38:45.45\00:38:48.33 that we find with Jesus as well? 00:38:48.53\00:38:50.82 Jesus also became a servant that He might become Lord. 00:38:51.68\00:38:57.03 I want you to notice Genesis chapter 45 00:38:58.04\00:39:01.23 and verse 15 about Joseph. 00:39:01.43\00:39:04.38 Genesis chapter 45 and verse 15. 00:39:04.68\00:39:08.13 Here we're told: 00:39:09.07\00:39:10.47 "Moreover he kissed all his brothers 00:39:10.68\00:39:15.63 and wept over them. 00:39:18.01\00:39:20.59 And after that his brothers talked with him. " 00:39:20.99\00:39:25.68 Did Joseph forgive his brothers in spite of the fact 00:39:26.08\00:39:31.82 that they had hated him and they had plotted to kill him? 00:39:32.02\00:39:35.41 Absolutely. 00:39:35.61\00:39:36.96 What words did Jesus speak on the cross of Calvary? 00:39:37.26\00:39:40.15 He said: "Father, forgive them 00:39:40.45\00:39:42.68 for they know not what they do. " 00:39:42.99\00:39:45.69 By the way, did the brothers of Joseph eventually 00:39:46.09\00:39:49.01 come and bow before Joseph? 00:39:49.21\00:39:51.16 They most certainly did. 00:39:51.47\00:39:52.92 The dream that had been revealed to Joseph at the beginning 00:39:53.42\00:39:57.05 of his life now was fulfilled at the end. 00:39:57.15\00:40:00.86 Did Jesus also speak about 00:40:02.08\00:40:06.46 every knee bowing and every tongue confessing 00:40:06.76\00:40:11.55 that Jesus is Lord after Jesus became a servant? 00:40:11.76\00:40:16.04 Notice Philippians chapter 2 and verses 5 through 11. 00:40:16.34\00:40:21.20 Philippians chapter 2 and verses 5 through 11. 00:40:21.50\00:40:25.36 This is a very well-known passage. The apostle Paul 00:40:25.56\00:40:27.87 says this: 00:40:27.97\00:40:29.00 That means He did not consider equality with God 00:40:39.18\00:40:41.60 as something to be hung onto, something to be grasped. 00:40:41.70\00:40:45.02 He continues saying: 00:40:45.87\00:40:47.33 There you have a passage that 00:41:07.98\00:41:09.69 speaks about Jesus 00:41:09.79\00:41:10.88 becoming a servant. 00:41:11.13\00:41:12.99 But what comes in consequence 00:41:13.39\00:41:15.83 of Jesus becoming a servant? 00:41:16.03\00:41:18.14 Verse 9: 00:41:18.34\00:41:19.67 "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him... " 00:41:19.87\00:41:24.24 So as Joseph became a servant 00:41:46.12\00:41:48.99 and then he became his brother's lord 00:41:49.19\00:41:51.67 so Jesus became a servant 00:41:51.97\00:41:54.90 so that He could become the Lord of the human race. 00:41:55.10\00:41:58.69 And as I mentioned, as Jesus forgave His brothers 00:41:58.99\00:42:03.07 Joseph also was magnanimous and merciful 00:42:03.27\00:42:07.27 and he forgave what his brothers had done to him. 00:42:07.47\00:42:12.41 By the way, we have a tremendous lesson here 00:42:12.65\00:42:15.24 in the story of Joseph. 00:42:15.44\00:42:16.82 You know, many people want to occupy high positions 00:42:17.88\00:42:21.06 before they learn to serve. 00:42:21.26\00:42:24.06 You know, the essence of the teachings of Christ 00:42:24.46\00:42:27.07 is found succinctly summarized 00:42:27.57\00:42:31.08 in Matthew chapter 23:12 00:42:31.28\00:42:33.72 where Jesus says: "He who 00:42:34.02\00:42:37.09 humbles himself 00:42:37.19\00:42:39.63 will be exalted 00:42:40.10\00:42:41.68 and he who exalts himself will be humbled. " 00:42:42.86\00:42:47.34 We find this illustration in the life of Jesus. 00:42:47.65\00:42:50.93 Jesus humbled Himself; He became a servant; 00:42:51.23\00:42:55.75 and therefore God highly exalted Him. 00:42:55.95\00:42:58.94 The problem with Lucifer is that Lucifer wanted to be 00:42:59.44\00:43:03.20 exalted without becoming a servant. 00:43:03.40\00:43:06.28 By the way, as you look at the Bible story 00:43:06.58\00:43:09.21 you have - for example - the case of Nebuchadnezzar. 00:43:09.41\00:43:11.74 You know, he goes out onto the balcony of his palace 00:43:12.04\00:43:15.74 and he says: "Isn't this great Babylon 00:43:15.94\00:43:18.12 that I built with my power and for my honor and my glory? " 00:43:18.32\00:43:22.91 And God looked at Nebuchadnezzar and said: 00:43:24.14\00:43:27.19 "Oh is that right? 00:43:27.29\00:43:28.51 So you're lord? You're the big guy? " 00:43:28.61\00:43:31.88 And so God in an instant removes from Nebuchadnezzar 00:43:32.89\00:43:36.58 the pearl of reason. 00:43:36.79\00:43:39.79 In other words, he loses that very aspect that distinguishes 00:43:41.76\00:43:46.24 human beings from animals. 00:43:46.44\00:43:47.83 And, of course, Nebuchadnezzar begins to act like a beast 00:43:49.03\00:43:53.33 because the one aspect that distinguishes animals from 00:43:53.83\00:43:58.43 humans has been removed. 00:43:58.63\00:44:00.31 In other words, Nebuchadnezzar - who wanted to exalt himself - 00:44:01.50\00:44:04.92 was what? Was humbled. 00:44:05.12\00:44:07.54 And then, of course, at the end of this episode 00:44:08.60\00:44:10.80 if you look at Daniel chapter 4 00:44:11.00\00:44:13.13 you find that Nebuchadnezzar says: 00:44:13.33\00:44:15.64 "Now I exalt and glorify the God of heaven 00:44:15.84\00:44:21.32 because He is able to humble those who are proud at heart. " 00:44:21.63\00:44:27.53 By the way, the Bible speaks about two mysteries: 00:44:28.19\00:44:30.84 the mystery of godliness and the mystery of iniquity. 00:44:31.04\00:44:33.71 The mystery of godliness is very simple. 00:44:34.01\00:44:36.56 God was manifest in human flesh. 00:44:36.86\00:44:39.66 God came down; God humbled Himself. 00:44:39.86\00:44:42.46 But when Jesus came down and humbled Himself 00:44:43.54\00:44:46.45 later on in this passage - I Timothy chapter 3- 00:44:46.65\00:44:49.70 it says that Jesus ascended on high 00:44:50.00\00:44:53.26 to His Father's throne. He was exalted. 00:44:53.46\00:44:55.64 On the other hand, in II Thessalonians 2 00:44:56.04\00:44:59.12 we have the mystery of iniquity. 00:44:59.32\00:45:01.07 In the mystery of iniquity an individual who is down here 00:45:01.57\00:45:06.20 wants to sit in the temple of God, showing himself 00:45:06.40\00:45:10.75 to be God... and therefore he will go to perdition. 00:45:10.95\00:45:13.98 Do you notice the contrast between the mystery of godliness 00:45:14.38\00:45:18.01 and the mystery of iniquity? 00:45:18.21\00:45:19.46 The mystery of godliness: God is manifested in human flesh, 00:45:19.77\00:45:23.91 becomes a servant, therefore God exalts Him. 00:45:24.21\00:45:27.53 In the case of the mystery of iniquity 00:45:27.83\00:45:30.70 a being who is a creature wants to exalt himself 00:45:30.94\00:45:33.78 to the position of God and therefore he is humbled. 00:45:33.98\00:45:37.39 This is illustrated in the story of Joseph. 00:45:37.79\00:45:40.90 Joseph became a humble servant and he was exalted 00:45:41.20\00:45:47.18 at the end of his life as lord over his brothers. 00:45:47.28\00:45:50.61 In the same way, folks, it happened with Jesus. 00:45:51.01\00:45:54.69 Jesus lowered Himself to the position of a servant 00:45:54.99\00:45:57.88 and was exalted by His Father 00:45:58.08\00:46:00.38 as Lord of Israel, as Lord over His people. 00:46:00.58\00:46:05.42 Now I'd like to read a statement 00:46:06.47\00:46:08.69 that we find in the book Patriarchs and Prophets. 00:46:08.89\00:46:12.16 It is a passage that has many of the elements 00:46:13.31\00:46:19.25 that we have studied here in our lecture today. 00:46:19.45\00:46:22.95 It's found in Patriarchs and Prophets, page 239-240. 00:46:23.78\00:46:27.32 By the way, Patriarchs and Prophets is a wonderful book 00:46:27.42\00:46:30.87 that describes the history of the Old Testament. 00:46:31.17\00:46:33.80 Actually it goes even before the Old Testament... 00:46:33.90\00:46:35.56 goes to the origin of evil in heaven... 00:46:35.76\00:46:37.29 but mainly from the time of creation all the way through 00:46:37.69\00:46:41.33 the time of David and partially of Solomon... 00:46:41.44\00:46:44.89 the story of Solomon. It's a tremendous history 00:46:45.09\00:46:49.27 of scripture amplified in a beautiful way. 00:46:49.57\00:46:52.78 And by the way, as I read that passage 00:46:53.50\00:46:55.60 that's where I got most of the ideas that I've shared with you 00:46:55.80\00:46:58.81 in our lecture today about Joseph as a symbol of Christ. 00:46:59.01\00:47:02.92 This is what the statement says: 00:47:04.01\00:47:05.88 "The life of Joseph illustrates the life of Christ. 00:47:07.08\00:47:11.26 It was envy that moved the brothers of Joseph 00:47:12.40\00:47:17.13 to sell him as a slave. 00:47:17.33\00:47:19.05 They hoped to prevent him from becoming greater 00:47:19.45\00:47:23.46 than themselves. And when he was carried to Egypt 00:47:23.66\00:47:27.50 they flattered themselves that they were to be no more 00:47:27.80\00:47:31.40 troubled with his dreams... that they had removed 00:47:31.50\00:47:34.96 all possibility of their fulfillment. 00:47:35.09\00:47:37.35 But, their own course was overruled by God 00:47:37.65\00:47:42.31 to bring about the very event that they designed to hinder. 00:47:42.51\00:47:47.27 So the Jewish priests and elders were jealous of Christ 00:47:47.67\00:47:51.05 fearing that He would attract the attention of the people 00:47:51.55\00:47:54.45 from them. They put Him to death 00:47:54.55\00:47:57.49 to prevent Him from becoming King 00:47:57.69\00:48:00.26 but they were thus bringing about this very result. 00:48:00.56\00:48:04.10 Joseph, through his bondage in Egypt, became a savior 00:48:04.50\00:48:09.14 to his father's family. Yet this fact did not lessen 00:48:09.24\00:48:13.24 the guilt of his brothers. 00:48:13.34\00:48:14.81 So the crucifixion of Christ by His enemies 00:48:15.01\00:48:18.01 made Him the Redeemer of mankind, the Savior of the 00:48:18.21\00:48:21.64 fallen race and Ruler over the whole world. 00:48:21.74\00:48:24.45 But the crime of His murderers was just as heinous as though 00:48:25.26\00:48:29.78 God's providential hand had not controlled events 00:48:29.98\00:48:33.38 for His own glory and for the good of man. 00:48:33.58\00:48:37.15 As Joseph was sold to the heathen by his own brothers 00:48:37.65\00:48:42.04 so Christ was sold to His bitterest enemies by one of His 00:48:42.24\00:48:46.51 disciples. Joseph was falsely accused and thrust into prison 00:48:46.61\00:48:51.09 because of his virtue. So Christ was despised and rejected 00:48:51.19\00:48:54.87 because His righteous, self-denying life was a rebuke 00:48:55.07\00:48:58.57 to sin. And though guilty of no wrong, He was condemned 00:48:58.77\00:49:03.17 upon the testimony of false witnesses. 00:49:03.37\00:49:06.12 And Joseph's patience and meekness under injustice 00:49:06.52\00:49:09.84 and oppression, his ready for- giveness and noble benevolence 00:49:10.04\00:49:13.60 towards his unnatural brothers 00:49:13.80\00:49:16.28 represents the Savior's uncomplaining endurance of the 00:49:16.48\00:49:20.00 malice and abuse of wicked men 00:49:20.20\00:49:22.21 and His forgiveness - not only of His murderers 00:49:22.51\00:49:26.05 but of all who have come to Him confessing their sins 00:49:26.25\00:49:29.78 and seeking pardon. " 00:49:29.98\00:49:32.20 And so the life of Joseph is a beautiful illustration 00:49:32.70\00:49:36.96 of the life of Jesus Christ. 00:49:37.16\00:49:38.82 As we began our study today we noticed in Luke chapter 24 00:49:39.12\00:49:43.56 that Moses, the prophets, the writings, the Psalms 00:49:43.76\00:49:48.62 all give witness to Jesus Christ. 00:49:48.82\00:49:51.15 The story of Joseph is a beautiful prefiguring 00:49:51.45\00:49:54.61 of the life of Jesus. 00:49:54.81\00:49:56.83 But there's one more point which I would like to underline 00:49:57.23\00:50:00.37 which is particularly significant, 00:50:00.57\00:50:02.55 and that is that Joseph - through what he did - 00:50:02.85\00:50:08.02 actually made it possible for the One greater than Joseph 00:50:08.22\00:50:13.90 to come to this world to save His people. 00:50:14.10\00:50:17.02 Let me just go through this very quickly. 00:50:17.52\00:50:19.74 You wonder why Joseph - 00:50:22.32\00:50:26.66 being such a good young man - 00:50:26.86\00:50:28.86 was taken as a slave to Egypt 00:50:29.06\00:50:32.37 and then he ended up in prison because he was faithful to God 00:50:32.57\00:50:36.90 and obeyed God's law. 00:50:37.10\00:50:38.86 You wonder that is until you see the full development 00:50:39.16\00:50:41.96 of the story. The fact is that 00:50:42.07\00:50:44.76 there was a prophecy in Genesis 00:50:44.96\00:50:46.30 chapter 15 and verses 13-15 00:50:46.40\00:50:48.76 that said that Israel 00:50:49.16\00:50:52.88 would be in a strange land, a land not theirs, 00:50:53.08\00:50:57.26 for 400 years. 00:50:57.46\00:50:58.90 And then after 400 years 00:50:59.40\00:51:01.75 they would come out of that strange land which would be 00:51:01.86\00:51:05.07 Egypt to go back to the land of Canaan. 00:51:05.17\00:51:08.48 Do you know that the story of Joseph actually made that 00:51:09.82\00:51:12.92 prophecy be fulfilled? 00:51:13.02\00:51:15.16 Because it was necessary for Jacob and his family 00:51:16.12\00:51:19.12 to move to Egypt. 00:51:19.32\00:51:21.00 Because if God was going to deliver them from Egypt 00:51:21.50\00:51:24.01 400 years after God gave this prophecy 00:51:24.21\00:51:26.65 they would have had to be in Egypt. 00:51:26.85\00:51:28.89 Now you say: "Why would they have to come to Egypt? 00:51:29.29\00:51:31.58 Why not leave them in Canaan? " 00:51:31.88\00:51:33.71 There was a very special purpose, and that is that 00:51:34.21\00:51:36.97 God needed to establish a nation in the land of Canaan. 00:51:37.17\00:51:41.09 And He knew that if Abraham and his descendants 00:51:41.49\00:51:45.47 stayed in Canaan, they would be corrupted by the influences 00:51:45.57\00:51:49.15 of Canaan... totally corrupted by the influences of Canaan. 00:51:49.25\00:51:53.28 And so God said: "I will lead the people down to Egypt 00:51:54.13\00:51:57.57 to shield them from growing as a nation in an environment 00:51:57.77\00:52:02.27 where wickedness is prevalent. " 00:52:02.47\00:52:04.51 But there's even more. 00:52:05.58\00:52:07.59 When they get down to Egypt Pharaoh says to Joseph 00:52:07.80\00:52:12.42 "You know, your father and your family can live 00:52:12.62\00:52:16.50 in the best part of the land in Goshen. " 00:52:16.70\00:52:19.75 By the way, do you know why Pharaoh did that? 00:52:20.15\00:52:22.31 He did that because - we're told in Genesis - 00:52:22.61\00:52:25.60 that the Egyptians did not live in the same environment 00:52:25.80\00:52:29.24 with farmers... with agricultural people. 00:52:29.44\00:52:33.16 We'll deal with this a little bit more when we have 00:52:33.26\00:52:34.91 our second study of Joseph. 00:52:35.01\00:52:36.52 And so what happened is because the Egyptians did not 00:52:36.92\00:52:40.16 intermingle with people who worked the land 00:52:40.36\00:52:43.75 Israel in the land of Goshen - this very prosperous land - 00:52:43.95\00:52:48.13 was able to thrive and to grow 00:52:48.33\00:52:51.47 and to proliferate without all of the evil influences 00:52:51.67\00:52:56.21 of the Egyptians totally corrupting them 00:52:56.41\00:52:59.02 and making them lose their identity. 00:52:59.22\00:53:01.63 In other words, they could grow into a huge nation 00:53:01.93\00:53:04.78 without the evil influences of Canaan, 00:53:04.88\00:53:07.39 without the evil influences - although they were influenced 00:53:07.59\00:53:10.45 to a certain point but not totally - 00:53:10.65\00:53:12.78 but without the evil influences of the Egyptians. 00:53:12.98\00:53:17.04 And of course they grew into a huge nation there. 00:53:17.24\00:53:22.08 And exactly on time God delivered them from the land 00:53:22.38\00:53:26.94 of Egypt and took them to Canaan... where the Seed 00:53:27.04\00:53:31.33 was going to be born later on in history. 00:53:31.53\00:53:35.19 By the way, God's providence is marvelous in this story. 00:53:35.49\00:53:40.01 You see, for example, Joseph going down into Egypt, 00:53:41.08\00:53:46.27 being a slave, being thrown into prison. 00:53:47.41\00:53:51.01 And you have the dreams that the baker and the cupbearer 00:53:52.07\00:53:57.51 of Pharaoh have. To make a long story short 00:53:57.71\00:54:01.47 the cupbearer goes out and for two years he forgets 00:54:01.67\00:54:04.33 to mention Joseph's name 00:54:04.63\00:54:06.24 because it wasn't time. 00:54:06.45\00:54:07.51 And then of course two years later Pharaoh has these dreams. 00:54:07.81\00:54:10.90 These dreams about 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine. 00:54:11.21\00:54:14.92 Actually God is revealing to Pharaoh and to Joseph 00:54:15.12\00:54:19.86 that it's the devil's intention to cause this famine to starve 00:54:20.06\00:54:23.94 Jacob and his family to death 00:54:24.14\00:54:25.65 because from Jacob and his family will come the Seed. 00:54:25.96\00:54:28.82 You can find that in Genesis 45 in verses 5-7. 00:54:29.12\00:54:32.44 See, God knows the end from the beginning. 00:54:32.54\00:54:34.04 He knew what the devil was up to and He allowed the devil to 00:54:34.35\00:54:36.89 cause the famine. But God sent Joseph down to Egypt 00:54:36.99\00:54:42.53 so that Joseph could make provision during the 7 years 00:54:42.83\00:54:46.98 of plenty so that when the famine came 00:54:47.08\00:54:50.98 there would be enough provision for Jacob and his family 00:54:51.29\00:54:55.12 to come down to Egypt and to not lose their lives 00:54:55.32\00:54:59.50 so that the holy line would continue and eventually 00:54:59.80\00:55:03.81 the Messiah could be born. 00:55:04.01\00:55:06.12 Isn't it marvelous the way the providence of God works? 00:55:06.42\00:55:09.77 You know, Joseph could have whined and he could have 00:55:10.07\00:55:12.57 complained. He could have said: "All I do is get raw deals. 00:55:12.67\00:55:16.42 I'm faithful to God and my brothers hate me without cause 00:55:16.72\00:55:19.90 and they're envious of me with no reason. 00:55:20.10\00:55:22.45 And here they sell me into slavery in Egypt. 00:55:22.75\00:55:27.03 And not only do they sell me into slavery, but because 00:55:27.33\00:55:30.05 I'm obedient to God's law I end up in prison. 00:55:30.25\00:55:33.05 What use is it to be faithful to God? " 00:55:33.25\00:55:35.74 But Joseph knew that God had a plan. 00:55:36.14\00:55:39.91 And Joseph did not make plans for himself. 00:55:40.82\00:55:43.15 He allowed God to unfold His plans for him. 00:55:43.45\00:55:47.25 It was the same with Jesus. 00:55:47.55\00:55:49.85 The Father had choreographed the life of Christ, and each day 00:55:50.15\00:55:54.26 the Father revealed to Jesus His plans to Jesus. 00:55:54.29\00:55:57.42 And Jesus walked in the steps that His Father had traced. 00:55:57.62\00:56:02.13 And so it can be with us. 00:56:02.43\00:56:06.18 You know, if we trust the Lord 00:56:06.68\00:56:08.82 no matter what tribulations and trials and problems that 00:56:09.12\00:56:11.67 we have in our lives, if we learn from the life of Joseph 00:56:11.77\00:56:15.05 and from the life of Jesus... We might not understand 00:56:15.25\00:56:17.76 everything that's happening in our lives 00:56:17.96\00:56:19.67 but we can say: "Father, I trust You. 00:56:19.87\00:56:22.19 I will walk in the path that You have established for me. 00:56:22.39\00:56:25.75 Some day I know that I will understand 00:56:26.05\00:56:28.62 and as I look back I will say: 'Thank you, Lord, 00:56:28.92\00:56:33.54 for doing things in Your way. 00:56:33.65\00:56:35.87 I wouldn't have had it happen any differently. ' " 00:56:36.07\00:56:40.26 You know, we would choose no path for ourselves 00:56:40.56\00:56:42.90 different than the path God chose for us 00:56:45.72\00:56:50.35 if we, like God, could see the end from the beginning. 00:56:50.55\00:56:55.45 And so let's learn from Joseph 00:56:55.86\00:56:58.24 and let's learn to be humble and meek of heart. 00:56:59.38\00:57:02.41 How about it? 00:57:02.71\00:57:04.21
