Let's bow our heads for prayer. 00:01:12.65\00:01:14.16 Our heavenly Father, 00:01:15.67\00:01:16.85 what a joy it is to come into Your presence 00:01:17.99\00:01:21.13 to hear Your voice speaking to us 00:01:21.53\00:01:24.53 through Your holy Word. 00:01:24.83\00:01:26.57 We ask for the presence of Your Holy Spirit. 00:01:27.27\00:01:30.04 Teach us how to truly overcome 00:01:31.38\00:01:34.41 guilt and failure. 00:01:34.71\00:01:37.98 And we ask it in the precious name of Your beloved Son Jesus, 00:01:38.38\00:01:42.09 Amen. 00:01:42.49\00:01:44.38 We want to begin our study today by turning in our Bibles 00:01:44.88\00:01:49.08 to Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26. 00:01:49.28\00:01:52.94 Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26. 00:01:53.34\00:01:57.33 We read this verse before but now we want to read it 00:01:57.63\00:02:01.24 in a slightly different context. 00:02:01.44\00:02:04.09 Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26. 00:02:06.03\00:02:11.29 We find the following words: 00:02:11.59\00:02:13.18 Now let's stop there. 00:02:24.26\00:02:26.28 "Let us make man in Our image according to Our likeness. " 00:02:27.43\00:02:31.99 How was man made originally? 00:02:32.29\00:02:34.80 He was made in the image 00:02:35.21\00:02:37.39 and likeness of God. 00:02:37.59\00:02:39.60 And by the way, if you read on in Genesis 1 and 2 00:02:40.10\00:02:43.65 you'll discover that both man and woman 00:02:43.85\00:02:46.47 were created in the image and the likeness of God. 00:02:46.77\00:02:51.88 Now notice also what we find 00:02:52.28\00:02:54.69 in Genesis chapter 1 and verse 31. 00:02:54.89\00:02:58.31 Genesis chapter 1 and verse 31. 00:02:58.81\00:03:02.27 This is the conclusion of creation 00:03:02.67\00:03:06.19 and we are going to be told what creation was like 00:03:07.15\00:03:11.03 when Jesus finished His work. 00:03:11.33\00:03:13.73 It says here in Genesis 1:31: 00:03:14.04\00:03:17.83 Everything that God made at creation was good. 00:03:32.65\00:03:37.42 There was not one taint of evil. 00:03:37.62\00:03:42.30 Every inclination of the heart of man was towards good. 00:03:43.00\00:03:48.99 He had a righteous holy nature 00:03:49.30\00:03:54.43 inclined only to good. 00:03:54.73\00:03:57.98 Now I want you to notice one further detail 00:03:58.38\00:04:01.22 as we examine the original condition of man. 00:04:01.42\00:04:04.89 Let's turn in our Bibles to Luke chapter 3 and verse 38. 00:04:05.20\00:04:10.71 Luke chapter 3 and verse 38. 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.65 This is the conclusion of the genealogy of Jesus 00:04:13.95\00:04:18.37 and we're told something here about Adam. 00:04:18.58\00:04:21.64 It says there in Luke 3 verse 38: 00:04:22.14\00:04:26.69 Very clearly Adam and Eve were created 00:04:37.38\00:04:42.35 sons and daughters of God. 00:04:42.55\00:04:46.64 And they were created good. 00:04:47.05\00:04:49.67 They were created in the image and likeness of God. 00:04:49.97\00:04:54.87 But now I want us to turn in our Bibles 00:04:55.27\00:04:57.86 to Genesis chapter 5 and let's read verses 1 to 3. 00:04:58.07\00:05:02.74 Genesis chapter 5 and verses 1 to 3. 00:05:03.24\00:05:06.98 There is a change in this passage. 00:05:08.06\00:05:10.40 By the way, this is after sin. 00:05:10.50\00:05:12.92 This is speaking about the birth of Seth, 00:05:13.12\00:05:16.29 who took the place of Abel whom Cain killed. 00:05:16.59\00:05:20.55 It says here in Genesis 5 and verse 1: 00:05:20.95\00:05:24.05 "This is the book of the genealogy of Adam 00:05:24.35\00:05:28.58 in the day that God created man. 00:05:28.88\00:05:32.06 He made him in the likeness of God. " 00:05:32.36\00:05:35.97 See, once again you have a repetition that man was made 00:05:36.08\00:05:38.77 in the likeness of God. 00:05:38.88\00:05:41.07 Verse 2: 00:05:41.37\00:05:42.40 "He created them male and female 00:05:42.59\00:05:45.50 and blessed them and called them mankind 00:05:45.80\00:05:49.85 in the day they were created. " 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.08 And now notice the difference of nuance in verse 3. 00:05:52.38\00:05:56.51 It says: 00:05:56.61\00:05:57.84 Now let me ask you: what is the difference between 00:06:12.55\00:06:15.20 Adam and Eve when they were created and Seth? 00:06:15.50\00:06:20.52 Very clearly, Adam and Eve were created in the image 00:06:20.75\00:06:24.63 and likeness of God 00:06:24.83\00:06:26.78 whereas Seth, the son of Adam 00:06:27.19\00:06:30.39 after Adam sinned, was born in the image 00:06:30.49\00:06:35.10 and likeness of his father Adam who had sinned. 00:06:35.30\00:06:40.40 There is a change in other words. 00:06:40.73\00:06:43.75 Now we need to understand that there is something wrong 00:06:44.96\00:06:48.31 with our first birth. 00:06:48.51\00:06:50.64 You see we all descend, accord- ing to the Bible, from Adam. 00:06:50.94\00:06:54.73 There's something wrong with our birth into the family of Adam. 00:06:55.64\00:07:01.14 For this reason Jesus says in John chapter 3 and verse 3: 00:07:01.54\00:07:06.39 By saying this, Jesus reveals the fact 00:07:18.00\00:07:21.01 that there is something wrong with our first birth. 00:07:21.22\00:07:24.46 There is something wrong with our birth from our mother. 00:07:24.96\00:07:27.96 And of course, our mother came from her mother 00:07:28.26\00:07:30.31 and her mother from her mother. If you go back far enough, 00:07:30.51\00:07:33.52 you end up with Adam and Eve 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.81 who sinned and transgressed against God. 00:07:35.91\00:07:38.86 So there is something wrong with our birth into Adam's family. 00:07:39.16\00:07:43.64 We're born into the image and likeness of the sinful Adam. 00:07:43.84\00:07:49.47 And by the way, the Bible makes it very clear that 00:07:50.43\00:07:53.05 there are only two families in this world. 00:07:53.25\00:07:55.35 There is the family of the first Adam... and by the way, 00:07:55.65\00:07:59.60 all of those who are born into the first Adam - whether you 00:07:59.80\00:08:02.54 like it or not - are children of the devil. 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.48 Whereas those who are born into the family of the 00:08:06.29\00:08:09.21 second Adam are children of God. 00:08:09.31\00:08:12.21 There is no middle ground. 00:08:12.51\00:08:13.76 You can't say: "I don't want to be a child of the devil 00:08:13.97\00:08:16.06 and I don't want to be a child of God. 00:08:16.26\00:08:17.81 I just want to be a child of my mother. " 00:08:18.02\00:08:20.12 It doesn't work that way. 00:08:20.42\00:08:21.57 You are either a child that is born into the family of Adam 00:08:21.87\00:08:25.31 or you are a child who is born into the family of God... 00:08:25.51\00:08:28.63 born again by a new birth. 00:08:28.94\00:08:32.01 There is something wrong - in other words - 00:08:32.22\00:08:35.00 with our first birth into the family of the sinful Adam. 00:08:35.10\00:08:40.14 We are born in his image and in his likeness 00:08:40.37\00:08:43.92 after he sinned. We are not born into this world 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.44 in the image and likeness of God. 00:08:47.64\00:08:50.02 We're born into the wrong family. 00:08:50.12\00:08:52.78 Now what do we get from this first Adam when we're born 00:08:53.52\00:08:57.12 from our mothers? Well the first thing that we get 00:08:57.33\00:09:00.46 is a sinful nature. 00:09:00.66\00:09:03.13 Notice what we find in the book of Ephesians 00:09:03.43\00:09:06.88 chapter 2 and verses 1 to 3. 00:09:07.08\00:09:09.78 Ephesians chapter 2 and verses 1 to 3. 00:09:10.28\00:09:14.19 Here the apostle Paul speaks about the condition 00:09:15.14\00:09:17.65 of those who are outside of Christ... outside the family 00:09:17.85\00:09:21.04 of Christ. It says in verse 1: 00:09:21.14\00:09:23.74 And here comes the key phrase: 00:09:55.78\00:09:57.53 By nature we are children of wrath 00:10:06.67\00:10:10.50 because we have been born into the family of the sinful Adam. 00:10:10.80\00:10:14.69 And unless we are born again we cannot see the kingdom of God; 00:10:14.99\00:10:19.30 we cannot enter the kingdom of God. 00:10:19.50\00:10:22.46 Notice also Psalm 51 and verse 5. 00:10:22.76\00:10:27.17 Psalm 51 and verse 5. 00:10:27.47\00:10:29.84 It tells us a little bit about what we inherit 00:10:30.14\00:10:32.92 from the sinful Adam. We inherit a sinful nature. 00:10:33.12\00:10:37.01 Notice Psalm 51 and let's read verse 5. 00:10:37.12\00:10:42.06 By the way, this is the Psalm where David is repenting 00:10:42.36\00:10:45.42 for the sin of adultery and the sin of murder. 00:10:45.62\00:10:49.17 It says there in Psalm 51 and verse 5: 00:10:49.57\00:10:53.17 According to the Bible we are born in sin. 00:11:03.39\00:11:06.78 We are born with a sinful nature. 00:11:07.08\00:11:09.85 We are born with a nature bent to evil. 00:11:10.16\00:11:13.12 In other words, we are born slanted towards evil. 00:11:13.62\00:11:17.70 We are born with a selfish nature. 00:11:18.01\00:11:20.76 We are born selfish. 00:11:21.06\00:11:22.80 If you don't think that we're born selfish, 00:11:23.10\00:11:25.79 just look at a little baby. 00:11:26.00\00:11:28.27 There's nothing more selfish in the world than a little baby 00:11:29.38\00:11:32.47 because in the world there is no one except for him 00:11:32.97\00:11:36.85 or for her. Little baby grows up... 00:11:37.05\00:11:40.45 two years old... they haven't reached the age 00:11:40.75\00:11:43.65 of accountability where they really understand yet 00:11:43.85\00:11:46.51 the consequences of their actions and the reasons 00:11:46.61\00:11:49.01 for their actions, and you know that they start 00:11:49.21\00:11:52.57 fighting over a toy. Why? 00:11:52.77\00:11:55.74 Because they have a selfish nature. 00:11:55.94\00:11:58.94 Because we are born with a selfish, sinful nature 00:11:59.15\00:12:02.54 slanted towards evil. 00:12:02.75\00:12:04.78 And then of course we grow up and we get married 00:12:05.08\00:12:07.53 and we start having marital discord and fights 00:12:07.73\00:12:11.52 because each one of us wants our own way. 00:12:11.73\00:12:14.75 In other words, we receive from Adam by nature selfishness. 00:12:15.70\00:12:21.52 And with this nature we cannot perform good. 00:12:21.86\00:12:25.58 Now listen to what I'm going to say. 00:12:25.88\00:12:27.35 We receive from Adam 00:12:27.65\00:12:29.81 a sinful nature. 00:12:30.02\00:12:31.67 In other words, we are born 00:12:31.87\00:12:32.98 in sin... singular. 00:12:33.18\00:12:35.49 But that sinful nature or that birth into sin 00:12:35.79\00:12:39.50 leads us to commit sins... plural. 00:12:39.70\00:12:44.23 In other words, our condition of sinfulness - our sinful 00:12:44.47\00:12:48.43 nature - leads us to commit sinful acts. 00:12:48.53\00:12:52.18 In other words, with our sinful nature with which we are born 00:12:53.92\00:12:57.64 we cannot perform the good. 00:12:57.84\00:13:00.48 It is impossible unless we are born again. 00:13:00.68\00:13:03.61 That's the reason why with our first birth 00:13:03.91\00:13:06.01 we are doomed. We cannot see the kingdom of God 00:13:06.22\00:13:09.17 and we cannot enter the kingdom of God. 00:13:09.27\00:13:11.71 It is impossible on the basis of our first birth. 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.98 So we receive from Adam a sinful nature 00:13:15.28\00:13:17.72 and then that sinful nature expresses itself in sinful acts. 00:13:17.93\00:13:22.40 And now by our sinful acts we become guilty of sin. 00:13:22.70\00:13:27.67 Notice what we find in Romans chapter 8 and verse 7 00:13:28.00\00:13:32.25 on what the sinful nature does. 00:13:32.55\00:13:34.58 You see the sinful nature expresses itself in sinful acts. 00:13:34.68\00:13:38.96 Romans chapter 8 and verse 7. 00:13:39.46\00:13:42.36 Here the apostle Paul says this: 00:13:42.66\00:13:45.10 The carnal selfish mind, the sinful nature with which 00:14:03.41\00:14:07.73 we are born, cannot be subject to the law of God. 00:14:07.83\00:14:11.24 It cannot obey the law of God. 00:14:11.44\00:14:13.25 Notice Romans chapter 7 and verses 18 and 19 00:14:13.55\00:14:17.56 which describes this same predicament. 00:14:17.59\00:14:19.88 Romans chapter 7 verses 18 and 19. 00:14:20.18\00:14:23.49 Here the apostle Paul says: 00:14:23.70\00:14:24.97 Does that describe your life? 00:14:48.92\00:14:50.81 At least at some stage of your life? 00:14:51.02\00:14:52.97 Have you ever had the experience where you just explode 00:14:53.18\00:14:55.89 and you say something. You say: "Now why in the world 00:14:55.99\00:14:59.16 did I say that? " You've never had that experience? 00:14:59.36\00:15:03.35 I've had it many times. 00:15:03.66\00:15:05.59 And I must admit that sometimes I still have it 00:15:05.89\00:15:08.44 because the Lord is still working on me. 00:15:08.75\00:15:11.55 I'm still a work in progress. 00:15:11.85\00:15:13.87 But what is it that leads me to commit that action? 00:15:14.17\00:15:18.31 It is the fact that I have what? 00:15:18.62\00:15:20.68 I have a carnal sinful nature 00:15:20.88\00:15:23.03 that expresses itself in acts of sin. 00:15:23.33\00:15:25.69 And I can decide that I want to do good 00:15:25.89\00:15:27.76 but I can't perform it. 00:15:27.96\00:15:29.25 I can decide that I don't want to perform evil 00:15:29.55\00:15:32.91 but I still perform the evil that I do not wish to perform. 00:15:33.11\00:15:37.58 In other words, from Adam I receive a sinful nature 00:15:38.28\00:15:41.37 that sins. And as the sinful nature expresses itself 00:15:41.57\00:15:45.57 in acts of sin, I become guilty of sin before God. 00:15:45.77\00:15:50.37 Notice what we find in Romans chapter 3 and verse 10. 00:15:50.87\00:15:55.04 Romans chapter 3 and verse 10. 00:15:55.34\00:15:57.99 And we read this in previous contexts, 00:15:58.29\00:16:00.52 but let's read it again. 00:16:00.62\00:16:02.27 Actually - probably - we have it memorized. 00:16:02.67\00:16:04.91 How many righteous? Not one! 00:16:13.16\00:16:15.96 And if you go on to verse 23 it says 00:16:16.17\00:16:18.32 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. " 00:16:18.42\00:16:22.44 How many people in this world have allowed their sinful nature 00:16:22.84\00:16:26.47 to express itself in acts of sin? 00:16:26.67\00:16:29.10 Every single person. 00:16:29.40\00:16:31.79 And if you say that you haven't, you just sinned 00:16:32.10\00:16:35.47 because you are a liar! 00:16:35.77\00:16:37.33 And outside the Holy City will be all liars. 00:16:37.63\00:16:41.30 We all have sinful natures 00:16:41.70\00:16:44.21 that have expressed themselves in acts of sin. 00:16:44.51\00:16:47.11 And therefore we stand guilty before God. 00:16:47.31\00:16:50.91 Notice Romans chapter 3 and verse 19. It says: 00:16:51.22\00:16:55.34 In other words, we all receive from Adam a sinful nature 00:17:14.35\00:17:18.04 that expresses itself in acts of sin. 00:17:18.14\00:17:21.96 When it expresses itself in acts of sin 00:17:22.36\00:17:25.34 we are guilty before God and we must keep our mouth shut 00:17:25.64\00:17:30.92 according to the apostle Paul. 00:17:31.22\00:17:32.67 And as a result of our guilt we must die. 00:17:32.97\00:17:38.22 Notice Romans chapter 6 and verse 23. 00:17:38.45\00:17:41.35 Romans chapter 6 and verse 23 00:17:41.65\00:17:44.15 and we'll read only the first part of the verse. 00:17:44.35\00:17:47.28 It says there: 00:17:47.69\00:17:48.92 So we receive from Adam a sinful nature 00:17:58.13\00:18:01.72 which expresses itself in acts of sin. 00:18:02.12\00:18:05.54 The acts of sin make us guilty before God. 00:18:05.84\00:18:09.47 And because we are guilty before God 00:18:09.87\00:18:12.69 the wages of our guilt is what? Is death. 00:18:12.89\00:18:17.48 That's the reason why in I Corinthians 15:22 it says: 00:18:17.78\00:18:23.32 And we're only going to read that part of the verse. 00:18:27.88\00:18:30.10 We're going to come back to that verse a little bit later on. 00:18:32.48\00:18:34.91 How many in Adam are subject to death according to scripture? 00:18:35.21\00:18:39.09 In Adam all die 00:18:39.39\00:18:41.60 because we all have a sinful nature 00:18:41.80\00:18:43.87 which has expressed itself in acts of what? Of sin. 00:18:44.07\00:18:48.47 And the wages of sin is death. 00:18:48.70\00:18:51.82 In other words, we are all on death row 00:18:52.12\00:18:56.37 waiting for the sentence to be executed upon us. 00:18:57.41\00:19:01.39 And we deserve it because we are guilty before 00:19:01.69\00:19:04.46 God's judgment bar. 00:19:04.76\00:19:06.91 Now notice Galatians chapter 5 verses 19 to 21. 00:19:07.11\00:19:11.58 Galatians chapter 5 and verses 19 to 21. 00:19:11.78\00:19:15.80 You know, we're born into this world slaves. 00:19:16.30\00:19:19.25 Do slaves have a right to inherit anything? No. 00:19:19.45\00:19:23.57 Slaves don't inherit. Who inherits? 00:19:23.68\00:19:25.56 Children. Sons. Yes. 00:19:26.45\00:19:29.23 Notice what we find in Galatians chapter 5 and verses 19-21. 00:19:29.43\00:19:35.07 Here the apostle Paul says the following. 00:19:35.37\00:19:38.05 He gives a list of sins and he says this: 00:19:38.15\00:19:41.32 It's not a complete list. 00:20:13.85\00:20:15.38 Now let's summarize what we've studied about 00:20:28.46\00:20:32.02 our relationship with the family 00:20:32.22\00:20:34.50 of Adam. First of all, 00:20:34.53\00:20:36.52 the Bible teaches that we are 00:20:36.62\00:20:38.32 all sons and daughters 00:20:38.42\00:20:40.05 of the sinful Adam. 00:20:40.15\00:20:41.68 Therefore we are in the image and likeness of the sinful Adam. 00:20:41.88\00:20:46.26 We inherit from him a sinful selfish nature... 00:20:46.66\00:20:50.42 the core of our being. 00:20:50.62\00:20:52.42 That sinful nature expresses itself in acts of sin. 00:20:52.62\00:20:56.52 We are born into Adam's family slaves. 00:20:57.49\00:21:01.53 And because we are slaves we have no right to inherit 00:21:01.93\00:21:05.33 anything other than the death which Adam and all of his 00:21:05.53\00:21:10.18 descendants deserve. We are all on death row 00:21:10.29\00:21:14.02 so we desperately need to change families. 00:21:14.22\00:21:18.80 Are you with me or not? 00:21:21.12\00:21:22.74 How many of you believe that we need to change families? 00:21:23.04\00:21:25.16 If you want to be saved, 00:21:25.75\00:21:27.24 you have to be born into a different family. 00:21:27.44\00:21:30.21 You have to be born into a new family. 00:21:30.52\00:21:33.25 Not into the family of the old, sinful Adam 00:21:33.55\00:21:36.38 in his image and likeness but into another family. 00:21:36.58\00:21:41.30 Now the question is: how do we change families 00:21:41.60\00:21:44.55 and what are those two families? 00:21:44.75\00:21:46.15 Go with me to Romans chapter 5 and verses 18 and 19. 00:21:46.25\00:21:50.42 John... not John... Romans. Did I say John? 00:21:50.72\00:21:54.96 Romans chapter 5 and verses 18 and 19. 00:21:55.26\00:21:59.45 I want you to notice here that the apostle Paul 00:22:00.45\00:22:03.38 is describing two Adams. 00:22:03.59\00:22:06.47 We find in verses 18 and 19... 00:22:07.44\00:22:09.61 I wish we had time to study the whole chapter 00:22:09.71\00:22:11.44 but we don't... It says in verse 18: 00:22:11.64\00:22:14.19 Did the sin of Adam have any consequence for us? 00:22:26.27\00:22:28.60 It most certainly did! It says here: 00:22:28.90\00:22:31.71 That's what we've been talking about. 00:22:39.95\00:22:41.49 How many Adams are there? There are two Adams. 00:23:09.29\00:23:12.37 We are born into which family? 00:23:12.67\00:23:14.81 The family of the first Adam. 00:23:15.01\00:23:16.97 Somehow, if we don't want to be condemned, 00:23:17.17\00:23:20.53 if we want to have life, we have to find a way 00:23:20.74\00:23:23.57 to be born into what? Into the family of the second Adam. 00:23:23.78\00:23:29.09 Because justification and life come through the second Adam. 00:23:29.39\00:23:34.38 We must be born into His family. 00:23:34.58\00:23:37.51 We must be born AGAIN! 00:23:37.71\00:23:40.16 The question is: how are we born again? 00:23:40.56\00:23:44.12 Well, let's go in our Bibles to Romans 6... 00:23:44.82\00:23:47.60 the very next chapter. 00:23:47.80\00:23:49.13 See, what the apostle Paul does is in Romans 5 00:23:49.33\00:23:52.59 he speaks about the two Adams. 00:23:52.79\00:23:54.76 He says we're all born into the family of the first Adam. 00:23:55.06\00:23:58.14 We're born slaves. 00:23:58.44\00:23:59.81 We're born in his image and likeness. 00:24:00.01\00:24:01.76 We don't have any right to inherit anything. 00:24:02.03\00:24:04.62 We're all on death row. 00:24:04.92\00:24:06.54 We're all condemned. 00:24:06.74\00:24:08.20 There's no hope for us 00:24:08.40\00:24:09.85 if we're born into the family of the first Adam. 00:24:10.05\00:24:12.08 But he says there's another Adam, 00:24:12.28\00:24:14.12 and this Adam... we can be born into His image and likeness. 00:24:14.32\00:24:17.16 We can be born into His family. 00:24:17.46\00:24:18.98 We no longer are slaves... we are children 00:24:19.28\00:24:21.56 and we have a right to inherit all things 00:24:21.66\00:24:23.38 if we're born into His family. 00:24:23.48\00:24:24.89 And now Paul in Romans 6 is going to say 00:24:25.19\00:24:27.32 "Do you want to know how you can change families? " 00:24:27.52\00:24:29.83 He's going to explain it. 00:24:30.23\00:24:32.37 Notice Romans chapter 6 and verse 3. 00:24:32.77\00:24:36.97 Romans chapter 6 and verse 3. 00:24:37.27\00:24:40.08 Here the apostle Paul is going to talk about 00:24:40.38\00:24:42.40 the ceremony that God has given us to change families. 00:24:42.60\00:24:45.86 The official adoption ceremony. 00:24:46.26\00:24:48.52 Notice Romans chapter 6 and verse 3: 00:24:48.93\00:24:51.94 Let me ask you: why did Jesus die? 00:25:06.12\00:25:07.96 What did Jesus pay for by His death? 00:25:08.46\00:25:10.86 What did He pay for? 00:25:13.07\00:25:15.16 He paid for sin. How many sins? 00:25:15.46\00:25:17.62 He paid for all of the sins of the world when He died. 00:25:18.12\00:25:21.24 Now when I'm baptized 00:25:21.64\00:25:23.65 I am what according to this verse? 00:25:23.95\00:25:27.29 Once again it says: "Do you not know that as many 00:25:27.59\00:25:30.48 of you as were baptized into Christ Jesus 00:25:30.58\00:25:32.89 were baptized into His death. " 00:25:32.99\00:25:34.97 In other words, when I am baptized 00:25:35.17\00:25:36.87 God looks at me as if I had died with Jesus on the cross. 00:25:37.08\00:25:41.91 And because Jesus died for all of the sins of the world 00:25:42.15\00:25:45.69 if I died with Him 00:25:45.89\00:25:48.21 the result is that all of my sins are what? 00:25:48.41\00:25:51.58 All of our sins are paid for 00:25:52.08\00:25:54.45 because when Jesus died on the cross He paid for all sins. 00:25:54.65\00:25:57.98 So if I died with Jesus on the cross 00:25:58.38\00:26:01.42 my sins were crucified along with Him. 00:26:01.62\00:26:05.07 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:26:05.47\00:26:07.09 This is wonderful! When I'm baptized it means 00:26:07.39\00:26:10.09 that God looks at me and He says: 00:26:10.19\00:26:11.81 "You should have been on that cross 00:26:12.01\00:26:13.35 but because you're baptized you are recognizing that Jesus 00:26:13.45\00:26:16.88 was nailed on that cross and I reckon you nailed on that cross 00:26:17.08\00:26:21.28 with Him. And I don't punish the same sin twice. 00:26:21.38\00:26:24.46 I punished them in Him. " 00:26:24.76\00:26:26.51 In other words, folks, what baptism does 00:26:26.81\00:26:29.57 is that it includes us in the death of Jesus. 00:26:29.77\00:26:33.64 It incorporates us into the death of Jesus 00:26:34.59\00:26:37.50 so that the Father looks at Jesus and He says: "Oh, 00:26:37.81\00:26:40.54 You died for sin and he was baptized. 00:26:40.74\00:26:43.70 And when he was baptized I reckoned him dead with You 00:26:43.90\00:26:46.53 on the cross... so he also died to sin. " 00:26:46.63\00:26:49.25 Now let me ask you: is this good news or what? 00:26:49.55\00:26:51.78 This is wonderful news! 00:26:52.09\00:26:53.65 Now notice what the apostle Paul continues saying 00:26:53.95\00:26:56.39 in Romans chapter 6 and verse 4. 00:26:56.59\00:26:58.65 "Therefore we were buried with Him... " Notice... 00:26:59.83\00:27:04.66 "through baptism. " It doesn't say like Him. 00:27:04.86\00:27:06.74 It says we were crucified with Him. 00:27:06.94\00:27:10.44 It says we were buried with Him how? 00:27:10.74\00:27:14.43 "through baptism into death" 00:27:14.63\00:27:17.87 Now let's stop there for a moment. 00:27:18.07\00:27:19.58 We were baptized into His what? His death. 00:27:19.78\00:27:24.01 In other words, when Jesus was crucified, when He was buried, 00:27:24.32\00:27:27.54 when I'm baptized God looks at me as being 00:27:27.74\00:27:30.81 crucified and buried. 00:27:31.01\00:27:32.58 God reckons me as being in Him. 00:27:32.88\00:27:35.45 I'm accepted in the beloved. 00:27:35.75\00:27:38.06 God looks upon me as if I had never sinned 00:27:38.16\00:27:40.89 because Jesus bore those sins in my place. 00:27:41.19\00:27:44.16 When I am baptized, in other words, I am incorporated 00:27:44.66\00:27:48.12 into what Jesus Christ did. But the news is even better. 00:27:48.32\00:27:51.94 You see, what Jesus did on the cross 00:27:52.34\00:27:54.78 was to take my guilt away. 00:27:54.99\00:27:57.48 He paid for all of my sins. 00:27:57.78\00:27:59.70 And when I am baptized, all of that guilt that Jesus bore 00:28:00.00\00:28:03.35 on the cross now is put to my account. 00:28:03.45\00:28:06.96 His righteousness is put to my account. 00:28:07.16\00:28:09.29 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:28:09.59\00:28:10.78 So the guilt that I receive from Adam is gone. 00:28:11.08\00:28:14.26 But you say: "I still have that sinful nature 00:28:14.57\00:28:16.78 that expresses itself in acts of sin. 00:28:16.88\00:28:19.08 What do we do about that? " 00:28:19.29\00:28:20.34 Well, let's go back to Romans chapter 6 and verse 4. 00:28:20.64\00:28:24.38 Let's read once again from the beginning of the verse. 00:28:24.71\00:28:26.62 In other words, what Jesus did on the cross 00:29:12.52\00:29:14.77 has a double blessing for us. 00:29:14.98\00:29:16.73 First of all, when Jesus died 00:29:17.03\00:29:19.40 on the cross He took care of 00:29:19.50\00:29:21.40 all of the guilt of the sins 00:29:21.51\00:29:23.10 that I have ever committed. 00:29:23.20\00:29:24.59 But secondly, when Jesus was 00:29:24.89\00:29:26.82 raised from the dead by the power of the Father 00:29:26.92\00:29:29.80 Jesus - who now lives - is able to give us power 00:29:30.10\00:29:34.37 to overcome the sinful nature 00:29:34.57\00:29:37.07 which we have received from Adam. 00:29:37.27\00:29:38.83 We receive a double blessing. 00:29:39.13\00:29:40.17 We are saved from the guilt of sin 00:29:40.37\00:29:42.69 and we are saved from the power of sin. 00:29:42.89\00:29:45.74 In other words, at baptism what God does is 00:29:46.04\00:29:49.78 when we are buried in the waters of baptism 00:29:49.98\00:29:52.05 God the Father looks at me and He says: 00:29:52.25\00:29:54.25 "I don't look at your sins any more because Jesus 00:29:54.35\00:29:56.58 took those sins to the cross. " 00:29:56.68\00:29:58.37 And also when Jesus died and resurrected 00:29:58.57\00:30:02.44 and I am baptized the Father says: 00:30:02.64\00:30:05.23 "Look, that Spirit that resurrected Jesus from the dead 00:30:05.43\00:30:09.78 now that you are coming forth from the watery grave 00:30:09.98\00:30:12.85 that same Spirit is going to give you power 00:30:13.05\00:30:15.76 so that sin will no longer enslave you. " 00:30:15.96\00:30:19.17 Now I want you to notice a couple of other verses 00:30:19.57\00:30:22.14 that speak about this double blessing. 00:30:22.24\00:30:24.16 Go with me to John chapter 3 and verses 5 and 6. 00:30:24.37\00:30:28.81 Here Jesus is speaking with Nicodemus. 00:30:29.11\00:30:30.90 John chapter 3 and verses 5 and 6. 00:30:31.20\00:30:35.44 Here Jesus says to Nicodemus: 00:30:35.74\00:30:38.88 What must we be born of? 00:31:01.54\00:31:03.13 We must be born of the what? Of the water 00:31:03.33\00:31:06.52 and of the Spirit. 00:31:06.72\00:31:09.20 What does the water do? 00:31:09.50\00:31:10.99 The water buries our guilt. 00:31:11.19\00:31:13.09 What does the Spirit do? 00:31:13.39\00:31:15.24 The Spirit gives us power in our lives to overcome 00:31:15.54\00:31:19.41 the sinful nature. 00:31:19.61\00:31:20.99 Now go with me to Acts chapter 2 and verse 38. 00:31:21.29\00:31:25.10 Acts chapter 2 and verse 38. 00:31:25.40\00:31:28.02 Here we find another reference to the double blessing 00:31:28.32\00:31:31.62 of baptism. Here Peter is speaking and he says this: 00:31:31.82\00:31:36.81 So at baptism God gives us a double blessing. 00:32:04.25\00:32:07.15 First of all, all of the sins that we have ever committed 00:32:07.46\00:32:10.93 are reckoned placed on Jesus 00:32:11.13\00:32:14.30 and they no longer are held against us. 00:32:14.50\00:32:17.46 God looks at us in Jesus. 00:32:17.76\00:32:19.87 He looks upon us as if we had never sinned. 00:32:20.17\00:32:23.32 He gives us a blank page. 00:32:23.62\00:32:26.13 He gives us the righteousness of Jesus. 00:32:26.33\00:32:28.85 The moment of baptism, in other words, is the moment 00:32:29.25\00:32:32.63 in which my sins are reckoned nailed to the cross 00:32:32.83\00:32:37.08 with Jesus. But God does more! 00:32:37.11\00:32:39.72 I mean if God just forgave my guilt and left me with the 00:32:40.02\00:32:42.81 unaided sinful nature I would continue committing what? Sin. 00:32:42.91\00:32:47.53 And that wouldn't do any good. 00:32:47.83\00:32:49.09 I would continue accumulating guilt. 00:32:49.29\00:32:50.97 So at baptism God buries my sins. 00:32:51.17\00:32:53.86 He buries the guilt but He gives me a power 00:32:54.07\00:32:56.82 with which I can overcome what? 00:32:57.03\00:33:00.88 I can overcome sin. 00:33:01.08\00:33:02.59 Now one problem that I've found with people is that they 00:33:02.89\00:33:05.33 tell me: "Well Pastor, you know 00:33:05.43\00:33:07.05 I know that the Bible says that when I'm baptized 00:33:07.25\00:33:10.32 God erases the past basically. He doesn't hold anything 00:33:10.53\00:33:14.43 that I've ever done against me. I know that that's true 00:33:14.54\00:33:17.64 but I just don't feel that God has forgiven me. " 00:33:17.84\00:33:20.54 Let me tell you folks: feelings have nothing to do with this. 00:33:21.62\00:33:24.85 We need to accept by faith that God says that when we are 00:33:25.90\00:33:30.13 baptized He reckons our sins buried with Jesus, 00:33:30.23\00:33:34.47 nailed to the cross with Jesus, 00:33:34.67\00:33:36.36 and that He's pouring out His Spirit upon us. 00:33:36.66\00:33:39.39 We need to accept it not because we feel it 00:33:39.69\00:33:42.19 but because He says it. 00:33:42.39\00:33:44.51 In other words, we need to live by faith. 00:33:45.01\00:33:47.72 We don't live by feelings... we live by faith 00:33:48.02\00:33:51.51 and trust in His word. 00:33:51.74\00:33:53.77 Now I want you to notice the blessings that we receive 00:33:54.88\00:33:57.76 when we are included in the second Adam. 00:33:57.96\00:34:00.50 You see, baptism is the incorporation ceremony 00:34:00.61\00:34:03.28 into the second Adam's family. 00:34:03.49\00:34:05.36 See, I'm born the first time from the first Adam. 00:34:06.16\00:34:08.71 That's my first birth. 00:34:08.91\00:34:10.46 Can't see the kingdom of God; can't enter the kingdom of God. 00:34:10.66\00:34:13.28 It's impossible. 00:34:13.38\00:34:14.60 But when I'm baptized, that's the official adoption ceremony. 00:34:14.90\00:34:18.08 When I'm baptized, that's the moment when I'm born 00:34:18.38\00:34:21.69 into the second Adam's family. 00:34:21.79\00:34:23.43 Now the sins that I've committed are buried in the water. 00:34:23.83\00:34:28.31 In other words, the guilt that I receive from Adam is gone. 00:34:28.61\00:34:31.77 Secondly, the sinful nature which expresses itself in sin 00:34:32.07\00:34:35.97 is overcome through the Holy Spirit 00:34:36.28\00:34:38.92 that is given at the moment of baptism. 00:34:39.12\00:34:41.24 But there's more. Notice Galatians 3:26-27. 00:34:41.54\00:34:47.26 Galatians chapter 3 verses 26 and 27. 00:34:47.36\00:34:51.42 You know, this is a wonderful thing that we're able to join 00:34:51.72\00:34:54.64 the family of Jesus, the family of the second Adam. 00:34:54.74\00:34:57.31 The family of the saved. 00:34:57.51\00:34:58.87 The family of those who will have everlasting life. 00:34:59.07\00:35:02.23 Notice Galatians chapter 3 and verses 26 and 27. 00:35:02.53\00:35:07.45 It says here, and we've read this before in another context. 00:35:07.86\00:35:12.08 It says: 00:35:12.21\00:35:13.25 What do we become through faith in Christ Jesus? 00:35:21.04\00:35:24.50 We become what? Sons of God. 00:35:24.53\00:35:27.07 What must we have been before? 00:35:27.27\00:35:28.63 Sons of Adam, of course. 00:35:29.79\00:35:31.86 Are we saved in Adam? 00:35:32.16\00:35:34.35 No... we're lost. 00:35:34.55\00:35:36.67 Now notice what it continues saying... 00:35:36.87\00:35:38.48 OK, we're sons of God by faith 00:35:38.68\00:35:40.59 but is there something that we need to do to express our faith? 00:35:41.00\00:35:44.01 Yes. There's an official ceremony. 00:35:44.31\00:35:46.58 It says in verse 27: 00:35:46.78\00:35:48.59 How do we become members of the family of the second Adam 00:35:57.81\00:36:01.99 Jesus Christ? It is by faith. 00:36:02.09\00:36:04.18 But we show our faith by being what? By being baptized. 00:36:04.38\00:36:08.88 And by the way, when we're baptized 00:36:09.08\00:36:10.99 we become sons and daughters of God. 00:36:11.19\00:36:15.39 Notice what we find in the book of Galatians 00:36:15.79\00:36:20.39 chapter 4 and verse 6. 00:36:20.59\00:36:22.57 Galatians chapter 4 and verse 6 00:36:22.77\00:36:24.88 where the apostle Paul is continuing the argument 00:36:25.01\00:36:27.12 of the passage that we just read 00:36:27.22\00:36:28.71 from the last couple of verses of chapter 3. 00:36:28.81\00:36:31.43 It says in Galatians chapter 4 and verse 7: 00:36:31.63\00:36:34.15 "Therefore you are no longer a... " What? "a slave 00:36:34.35\00:36:39.60 but a son. " In other words, when we're incorporated 00:36:39.80\00:36:44.47 into the family of Jesus we are no longer slaves 00:36:44.57\00:36:48.09 but we are what? We are sons. 00:36:48.29\00:36:50.92 And do you know what we become? I've mentioned this before. 00:36:51.13\00:36:53.58 When we are baptized into Christ we become brothers and sisters 00:36:53.88\00:36:57.69 of Jesus. Isn't that wonderful? 00:36:57.89\00:37:03.24 Now is Jesus the Son of God? 00:37:04.30\00:37:06.10 So what happens if I'm His brother or His sister? 00:37:06.60\00:37:09.40 We have the same Father. 00:37:11.35\00:37:13.12 See? Adam isn't our father any more. 00:37:13.42\00:37:15.82 Our father is God. 00:37:17.17\00:37:18.57 We are brothers and sisters of whom? Of Jesus. 00:37:19.07\00:37:22.40 In other words, we are incor- porated into the family of God 00:37:22.90\00:37:25.78 and we become brothers and sisters of Jesus. 00:37:25.98\00:37:29.39 Now, do we have a right to inherit all things? 00:37:30.40\00:37:35.59 Absolutely. Notice what it continues saying in Galatians 00:37:35.70\00:37:39.71 chapter 4 and verse 7. 00:37:39.81\00:37:41.63 Galatians chapter 4 and verse 7. 00:37:41.83\00:37:43.25 "Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son. 00:37:43.45\00:37:47.09 And if a son, then... " What? 00:37:47.39\00:37:52.73 "an heir of God 00:37:52.93\00:37:55.17 through Christ. " 00:37:55.27\00:37:57.28 In other words, do we have 00:37:57.58\00:37:58.61 rights of inheritance? 00:37:58.71\00:38:00.13 Will we inherit eternal life? 00:38:00.33\00:38:01.95 Will we inherit the kingdom? 00:38:02.25\00:38:03.65 Will we inherit all good things? Yes we will... 00:38:03.95\00:38:06.98 because we're not longer slaves, we're sons. 00:38:07.18\00:38:09.90 The guilt has been buried. 00:38:10.20\00:38:11.63 The power has been overcome. 00:38:11.83\00:38:13.95 We are sons and daughters of God brothers and sisters of Jesus. 00:38:14.15\00:38:17.90 How important is baptism? 00:38:18.10\00:38:19.90 Listen folks, it is the official adoption ceremony. 00:38:20.10\00:38:24.24 It is the transition between our old family 00:38:24.44\00:38:27.94 and our new family. 00:38:28.14\00:38:29.82 Notice what we find in Romans chapter 8 verses 16-17 00:38:30.02\00:38:34.83 on this same issue of inheritance. 00:38:35.03\00:38:36.95 Romans chapter 8 verses 16 and 17. 00:38:37.25\00:38:41.55 Here the apostle Paul say that everything is through Jesus. 00:38:42.05\00:38:44.77 We have to join Jesus. We join Jesus in baptism. 00:38:44.87\00:38:47.71 Notice chapter 8 of Romans and verses 16 and 17. 00:38:48.11\00:38:52.94 And so now as sons and daughters of God 00:39:17.25\00:39:19.83 we have all of the rights of inheritance. 00:39:20.03\00:39:22.69 But there's more. 00:39:22.99\00:39:24.60 If we were born into the image and likeness of the 00:39:24.80\00:39:27.35 first Adam, when we are born into the second Adam's family 00:39:27.45\00:39:30.91 in whose image and likeness will we be? 00:39:31.11\00:39:34.01 Go with me to the book of Romans chapter 8 and verse 29. 00:39:34.41\00:39:39.98 Romans chapter 8 and verse 29. 00:39:40.18\00:39:43.47 Very important verse that describes what happens 00:39:43.97\00:39:47.13 when we join the family of Jesus. 00:39:47.33\00:39:49.07 It says there in verse 29 of Romans 8: 00:39:49.37\00:39:52.77 What are we going to be conformed to? 00:40:03.96\00:40:06.07 We are "conformed to the image of His Son. " 00:40:06.27\00:40:09.19 In whose image were we when we were born into the 00:40:09.39\00:40:11.57 first Adam's family? We were in his image and likeness. 00:40:11.67\00:40:15.23 But when we are born into the family of Christ 00:40:15.53\00:40:17.82 in whose image are we conformed? 00:40:18.02\00:40:20.16 And so now when we're born into the family of Jesus 00:40:30.28\00:40:32.68 we're born in the image and likeness of Jesus. 00:40:32.88\00:40:36.13 We are no longer in the image and likeness of the original 00:40:36.33\00:40:40.09 sinful Adam. Now you are saying: "But Pastor Bohr, 00:40:40.29\00:40:44.42 we have a problem. Many times I don't 00:40:44.72\00:40:47.69 reflect the image of Jesus. " 00:40:47.89\00:40:49.77 Yes, but God reckons you as being in the image of Jesus. 00:40:50.17\00:40:53.81 And then do you know what God does? 00:40:54.01\00:40:55.63 He transforms and changes you step by step 00:40:55.83\00:40:59.14 as you behold Jesus every day. 00:40:59.34\00:41:01.20 Go with me to II Corinthians chapter 3. 00:41:01.50\00:41:03.85 And this process will not end until this body is changed 00:41:04.05\00:41:07.74 into the likeness of the perfect body of Jesus. 00:41:07.94\00:41:09.92 It's a process... the process of sanctification. 00:41:10.12\00:41:13.14 The image of Jesus is reproduced more and more in us. 00:41:13.64\00:41:17.17 But when we're baptized God recognizes us 00:41:17.47\00:41:21.13 as being in the image and likeness of His Son. 00:41:21.34\00:41:24.27 We are no longer reckoned in the sinful family of Adam. 00:41:24.57\00:41:28.54 Notice what we find in the book of II Corinthians 00:41:28.74\00:41:32.51 chapter 3 and verse 18. 00:41:32.71\00:41:34.98 II Corinthians chapter 3 and verse 18. 00:41:35.28\00:41:38.34 Here the apostle Paul says: 00:41:39.17\00:41:40.75 Are being what? How are we transformed? 00:41:56.06\00:41:59.97 How? By what? 00:42:00.17\00:42:02.86 What happens when we behold Jesus each day? 00:42:19.47\00:42:22.63 The more we behold Him? 00:42:22.93\00:42:24.37 We are transformed into His what? Into His image. 00:42:24.67\00:42:28.48 But it's done from glory to glory. 00:42:28.68\00:42:32.05 The more we behold, the more we are changed into His image. 00:42:32.35\00:42:37.04 It's not that we're striving to be in His image. 00:42:37.86\00:42:41.26 Each day we are reflecting more and more His what? 00:42:41.56\00:42:46.22 His image and His likeness. 00:42:46.52\00:42:48.79 In other words, when I'm baptized the process begins. 00:42:49.09\00:42:51.74 I'm considered in the image and likeness of Jesus. 00:42:52.04\00:42:54.81 I've gotten rid of that first Adam... the image 00:42:55.01\00:42:58.52 and likeness of the first Adam. 00:42:58.62\00:42:59.94 And then as I behold Jesus each day I grow to be like Him 00:43:00.04\00:43:04.46 more and more. 00:43:04.76\00:43:06.62 And then what happens to the sentence of death? 00:43:06.92\00:43:09.64 Listen, if when I'm baptized the death of Jesus is reckoned 00:43:10.59\00:43:14.64 as mine, do I have to die any more? 00:43:14.75\00:43:17.37 I might die physically but am I going to suffer 00:43:17.47\00:43:19.74 everlasting death? Am I going to suffer second death? 00:43:19.84\00:43:22.26 No. In fact, we find in I Corinthians chapter 15 00:43:22.57\00:43:26.33 verse 22- the last part of the verse that I didn't read - 00:43:26.53\00:43:29.37 it says: "For in Adam all... " What? 00:43:29.57\00:43:32.62 "all die. But In Christ all shall be... " What? 00:43:32.82\00:43:38.06 "all shall be made alive. " 00:43:38.26\00:43:40.37 "He who has the Son has life. " 00:43:40.57\00:43:43.01 "He who does not have the Son does not have life. " 00:43:43.21\00:43:46.97 In other words, when I am reckoned in Jesus 00:43:47.27\00:43:49.40 now I'm not on death row any more. 00:43:49.60\00:43:52.14 I have the sentence of life given in my favor. 00:43:52.44\00:43:56.42 And so what does baptism do? Wow! What a blessing. 00:43:56.82\00:44:01.54 It leads me to shed that first Adam. 00:44:02.47\00:44:05.14 It leads me to bury my guilt. 00:44:05.44\00:44:08.30 In it I receive the power of a new nature 00:44:08.80\00:44:11.81 through the Holy Spirit to overcome sin. 00:44:12.01\00:44:13.90 Instead of a slave now I'm a son. 00:44:14.20\00:44:16.67 As a son, no longer am I disinherited. 00:44:17.07\00:44:20.41 I have a right to inherit every- thing that belongs to Jesus. 00:44:20.51\00:44:23.69 Furthermore, from the moment that I am baptized 00:44:24.29\00:44:27.39 at that moment I'm reckoned in the image of Jesus 00:44:27.59\00:44:30.11 and as I behold after my baptism day after day 00:44:30.31\00:44:33.19 I'm changed more and more into the image of Jesus. 00:44:33.39\00:44:36.72 And I don't have to fear death any more 00:44:36.92\00:44:38.83 because in the second Adam we are all made alive. 00:44:39.03\00:44:43.06 How important then is baptism? 00:44:44.18\00:44:46.41 You know some people say: "Ah, baptism. Yes... no... 00:44:47.11\00:44:51.45 it doesn't make any difference. " 00:44:51.65\00:44:53.01 It makes a huge difference 00:44:53.31\00:44:54.89 because it is the official adoption ceremony 00:44:55.19\00:44:58.96 into the family of God. 00:44:59.16\00:45:00.78 If you say: "I don't have to be adopted, " 00:45:01.08\00:45:02.85 that's like going out on the street and seeing this cute kid 00:45:03.05\00:45:05.48 and saying 'I think I'll take him home with me. ' " 00:45:05.58\00:45:07.44 You can't do that. 00:45:07.84\00:45:09.44 Do you have to go through an official adoption process? 00:45:09.64\00:45:13.17 Do you have to sign documents? 00:45:13.37\00:45:15.22 Do you have to do this publicly? You most certainly do. 00:45:15.32\00:45:18.24 And it's the same with Jesus. Now the question is: 00:45:18.44\00:45:21.36 I'm going to go through this very quickly. We're not even 00:45:21.56\00:45:23.51 going to read the verses. 00:45:23.61\00:45:25.01 How should a person be baptized? 00:45:25.41\00:45:27.32 You know, there are many churches that baptize 00:45:27.62\00:45:30.80 by infusion. That is by pouring. 00:45:31.00\00:45:33.13 There are churches that baptize 00:45:33.99\00:45:35.43 also by sprinkling, 00:45:35.63\00:45:37.39 by aspersion. 00:45:37.49\00:45:38.93 Are those proper modes of baptism? 00:45:39.82\00:45:42.06 They most certainly are not. 00:45:42.36\00:45:44.00 Let me give you the Biblical evidence 00:45:44.30\00:45:45.82 without reading the verses. 00:45:45.85\00:45:47.49 Do you know that Romans chapter 6 and verse 4 speaks 00:45:47.79\00:45:52.08 of baptism as a burial? 00:45:52.28\00:45:54.35 Have you ever seen a burial where they lay someone on the 00:45:54.85\00:45:57.07 ground? They sprinkle a little bit of dirt on their head? 00:45:57.17\00:45:59.35 A burial means what? 00:46:00.71\00:46:02.67 To be buried under the ground. 00:46:02.97\00:46:04.71 And in baptism, you're buried under the water. 00:46:05.67\00:46:08.94 Incidentally, the word baptism 00:46:09.24\00:46:11.57 comes from the Greek baptizo 00:46:11.77\00:46:13.70 which means to immerse or to submerge. 00:46:13.80\00:46:17.42 The very word means to submerge. 00:46:17.92\00:46:20.96 Furthermore, we find clearly in scripture that Jesus was 00:46:21.26\00:46:24.92 baptized by immersion. 00:46:25.12\00:46:26.76 You read Mark chapter 1 verses 9 through 11. 00:46:26.96\00:46:29.68 We don't have time to read it 00:46:29.88\00:46:31.19 but it says there that Jesus went into the water 00:46:31.49\00:46:34.45 and He came up out of the water. 00:46:34.65\00:46:37.39 "Up out of the water" it says. 00:46:37.59\00:46:39.86 So much for the idea that Jesus is standing on the banks 00:46:40.06\00:46:42.76 of the Jordan and John the Baptist has a little cup 00:46:42.86\00:46:45.90 and he's pouring water over the head of Jesus. 00:46:46.10\00:46:48.27 That's not the Biblical perspective. 00:46:48.37\00:46:50.58 Do you think it's important for us to be baptized 00:46:50.78\00:46:52.36 the way God says we're supposed to? 00:46:52.46\00:46:53.93 Ah, who cares? Sprinkling... infusion... 00:46:55.02\00:46:57.76 just with the Holy Spirit. Who cares? 00:46:57.96\00:47:00.75 Do you think we need to accept God's terms? 00:47:01.05\00:47:03.00 You see Christians these days... they have the idea that 00:47:03.20\00:47:05.64 you know, "God doesn't really care how I worship; 00:47:05.84\00:47:08.14 God doesn't care which day I keep; 00:47:08.34\00:47:09.82 God doesn't care how I'm baptized; 00:47:10.03\00:47:11.47 God doesn't care what I eat; 00:47:11.67\00:47:13.10 God doesn't care where I go. 00:47:13.30\00:47:14.97 You know, God accepts me just as I am and He leaves me 00:47:15.17\00:47:18.39 just like I am, too. " 00:47:18.49\00:47:19.73 Does God expect us to obey His terms? 00:47:21.20\00:47:23.87 He most certainly does. 00:47:24.17\00:47:25.78 And in baptism He expects us to be baptized the way He says 00:47:25.98\00:47:28.99 we're supposed to. By the way, in John 3 verse 23 it says: 00:47:29.09\00:47:32.32 Now if he's baptizing by sprinkling he wouldn't need 00:47:42.13\00:47:45.37 much water. But the fact is that there was "much water. " 00:47:45.57\00:47:49.46 The Jordan River some places has very little water. 00:47:49.76\00:47:52.14 But there was much water there because it was necessary 00:47:52.45\00:47:55.42 to submerge or to immerse people. 00:47:55.62\00:47:57.66 I could tell you the story of the Ethiopian eunuch - 00:47:57.86\00:48:00.21 it's found in Acts 8:38-39- 00:48:00.41\00:48:02.48 where Philip is sent to indoctrinate or to teach 00:48:02.78\00:48:06.76 this Ethiopian who had gone to Jerusalem to celebrate 00:48:06.96\00:48:10.36 a Hebrew feast and he was on the way back to Ethiopia. 00:48:10.56\00:48:12.86 And Philip was led to him to explain to him 00:48:13.16\00:48:15.62 Isaiah chapter 53. 00:48:15.82\00:48:17.38 And when the Ethiopian sees that Isaiah 53 is centered in Jesus 00:48:18.38\00:48:22.80 he says to Philip: "What's in the way for me 00:48:23.00\00:48:26.08 being baptized? I want to be baptized. " 00:48:26.28\00:48:28.16 And so as the chariot was moving along 00:48:28.26\00:48:30.55 they found this place where there was water. 00:48:30.75\00:48:33.15 They stopped the chariot, and the Bible says that 00:48:33.35\00:48:35.70 both Philip and the eunuch went into the water 00:48:36.00\00:48:39.61 and they came out of the water. 00:48:39.81\00:48:42.21 That is the proper mode of baptism. 00:48:43.19\00:48:45.18 And we have to do it on God's terms. 00:48:45.48\00:48:47.23 You know, there are churches who think that it's appropriate 00:48:47.43\00:48:50.54 to baptize infants. 00:48:50.74\00:48:52.56 Babies. 00:48:53.34\00:48:54.76 "Oh who cares. As long as you're baptized God doesn't mind. " 00:48:54.96\00:48:57.69 Listen folks, the Bible gives at least four conditions 00:48:58.40\00:49:02.01 in order to be baptized. Let me mention them here quickly. 00:49:02.21\00:49:04.63 Matthew 28 verses 19 and 20 00:49:04.93\00:49:07.03 says that in order for someone to be baptized 00:49:07.23\00:49:09.08 they must be made disciples and they must be taught. 00:49:09.28\00:49:11.94 "Go ye therefore and teach all nations 00:49:13.82\00:49:16.57 baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, 00:49:16.87\00:49:19.80 and the Holy Spirit. " In other words, there must be teaching. 00:49:20.00\00:49:22.87 Can you teach a baby 00:49:23.07\00:49:24.24 the principles of the gospel? 00:49:24.54\00:49:26.42 Obviously not... especially when they're newly born. 00:49:26.62\00:49:29.11 Secondly, in Acts 2:38 it says that we're supposed to 00:49:29.52\00:49:33.20 repent of our sins. Can a little baby repent? 00:49:33.30\00:49:36.26 No! And by the way, on the Day of Pentecost 00:49:36.56\00:49:38.57 all of those who were baptized were adults. 00:49:38.77\00:49:40.62 Jesus was baptized an adult. 00:49:40.82\00:49:42.42 Every person in the Bible who was ever baptized 00:49:42.62\00:49:44.94 was baptized an adult 00:49:45.04\00:49:46.31 or at least they had reached the age of accountability. 00:49:47.28\00:49:50.47 Matthew 3:6 says that in order to be baptized we must confess 00:49:50.77\00:49:56.00 our sins. Can a little baby say: "I'm sorry for crying so hard 00:49:56.21\00:49:59.77 Daddy. I'll be more patient next time. " Of course not. 00:49:59.87\00:50:03.57 You must confess your sins. 00:50:04.60\00:50:06.64 Only a person who has reached the age of accountability of 00:50:06.84\00:50:09.06 reason can do that. And furthermore, Mark 16:16 00:50:09.16\00:50:13.32 says that we must believe in order to be baptized. 00:50:13.52\00:50:17.09 A little baby cannot believe. 00:50:17.39\00:50:19.64 All of the baptisms in the Bible were done with adults. 00:50:19.67\00:50:23.27 Which means that in order for baptism to have significance 00:50:23.57\00:50:27.75 for us we must be immersed. And we must be baptized 00:50:27.85\00:50:31.26 when we understand what baptism truly means. 00:50:31.36\00:50:35.56 Now the question is: how important is baptism? 00:50:35.86\00:50:39.15 Go with me to Mark 16 and verse 16. 00:50:39.45\00:50:42.79 Mark 16 and verse 16. 00:50:43.09\00:50:46.59 Here we find a very important expression 00:50:47.66\00:50:52.00 that is given by Mark. 00:50:52.20\00:50:55.21 Mark 16 and verse 16. 00:50:55.51\00:50:58.51 I want you to remember the elements 00:50:58.71\00:50:59.74 because we're going to come back to this. 00:50:59.79\00:51:01.12 It says there, Jesus speaking: 00:51:01.42\00:51:04.15 Did you notice that? 00:51:18.45\00:51:20.15 "He who believes and is baptized will be... " What? 00:51:20.35\00:51:23.42 "will be saved. " Now let's notice those same 3 words 00:51:23.72\00:51:27.01 in Acts chapter 16. Acts chapter 16 00:51:27.21\00:51:31.17 and let's read verses 30 to 33. 00:51:31.37\00:51:34.05 Acts 16:30-33. 00:51:34.35\00:51:36.25 This is speaking about the Philippian jailer... 00:51:36.55\00:51:40.23 remember that Paul and Silas were thrown into jail. 00:51:40.43\00:51:42.99 And at night there was an earth- quake and the jail opened up. 00:51:43.29\00:51:47.14 And I want you to notice what happens to the jailer 00:51:47.35\00:51:49.88 and his family. Chapter 16 and verse 30: 00:51:49.99\00:51:53.12 "And he brought them out and said: 00:51:53.42\00:51:56.39 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved? ' 00:51:56.59\00:52:00.13 So they said... " Now notice this: 00:52:00.43\00:52:03.31 "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ 00:52:03.51\00:52:06.48 and you will be saved... you and your household. ' " 00:52:06.68\00:52:10.07 Do we find two of the same words that were in Mark 16? 00:52:11.36\00:52:14.84 "He who believes and is baptized will be... " What? 00:52:15.08\00:52:20.16 "saved. " Here it says... the apostle Paul says: 00:52:20.39\00:52:23.48 "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be" What? 00:52:23.68\00:52:26.82 "saved. " Notice verse 33. 00:52:27.12\00:52:29.74 It says: "And he took them the same hour of the night 00:52:29.94\00:52:33.48 and washed their stripes and immediately 00:52:33.68\00:52:36.43 he and all his family were... " What? "were baptized. " 00:52:36.63\00:52:41.11 Did the apostle Paul believe in baptism? 00:52:41.41\00:52:43.20 Did he just say: "Oh, just believe in Jesus. 00:52:44.07\00:52:46.72 You'll be saved. You don't have to worry about being baptized. " 00:52:46.92\00:52:50.22 No. He said: "Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:52:50.42\00:52:54.46 You will be saved. " And then he what? 00:52:54.49\00:52:57.18 And then he baptized them. 00:52:57.38\00:52:58.84 By the way, do you know that the great apostle Paul 00:52:59.14\00:53:00.71 himself was baptized? 00:53:00.81\00:53:02.71 Notice Acts chapter 22 00:53:02.91\00:53:04.92 and verse 16. 00:53:05.12\00:53:06.43 Acts chapter 22 verse 16. 00:53:06.73\00:53:08.53 Was the apostle Paul a notorious sinner 00:53:08.83\00:53:11.72 before his conversion? 00:53:12.12\00:53:13.59 Did he accumulate a lot of guilt? 00:53:13.79\00:53:15.96 Oh, I wish I could tell you the story of all the guilt 00:53:16.26\00:53:19.36 that he accumulated by killing God's people 00:53:19.46\00:53:22.41 and imprisoning God's people. 00:53:22.61\00:53:24.18 But I want you to notice that when he meets Ananias 00:53:24.48\00:53:26.96 that he is encouraged to do something. 00:53:28.25\00:53:31.53 It says here in Acts chapter 22 and verse 16: 00:53:31.83\00:53:36.60 What happens when we are baptized? 00:53:59.52\00:54:02.23 Our sins are what? Are washed away. 00:54:02.53\00:54:05.82 In other words, the guilt is gone 00:54:06.12\00:54:08.36 and we receive like the apostle Paul 00:54:08.66\00:54:10.88 the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. 00:54:10.99\00:54:15.05 That's why Jesus says that whoever is not born of the water 00:54:16.20\00:54:20.24 and of the Spirit cannot see the kingdom of God. 00:54:20.44\00:54:24.61 And then He goes on to say 00:54:24.81\00:54:26.56 that whoever is not baptized of the water and of the Spirit 00:54:26.76\00:54:29.89 cannot enter the kingdom of God. 00:54:30.09\00:54:33.86 Is baptism then indispensible? 00:54:34.73\00:54:37.57 Baptism by immersion. Yes. 00:54:37.87\00:54:40.13 And let me tell you what happens at baptism. 00:54:40.23\00:54:41.97 Two things happen at baptism. 00:54:42.17\00:54:43.65 Number one: you are joined to Christ personally. 00:54:44.05\00:54:49.41 You become His brother and His sister. 00:54:49.71\00:54:52.63 That's the first meaning of baptism. 00:54:52.83\00:54:54.23 The second meaning of baptism is 00:54:54.63\00:54:57.13 that when we are buried in the waters and we come forth 00:54:57.34\00:55:00.41 to newness of life we join the body of Christ 00:55:00.51\00:55:04.68 which is His what? His church. 00:55:04.88\00:55:07.86 So baptism means union with Christ 00:55:08.17\00:55:10.93 and it means union with His church which teaches the truth 00:55:11.13\00:55:15.16 of God. Now let's notice that. 00:55:15.26\00:55:17.85 Let's go in our Bibles to Colossians chapter 1 00:55:18.05\00:55:20.78 and verse 18. Colossians chapter 1 verse 18. 00:55:20.98\00:55:25.30 And we'll read three verses as we draw this to a close. 00:55:25.50\00:55:27.98 The apostle Paul says this: 00:55:28.18\00:55:30.73 What is the body of Jesus? 00:55:37.87\00:55:39.46 The body of Jesus is the... What? The church. 00:55:39.66\00:55:43.06 Now how do we join the body of Jesus? 00:55:43.26\00:55:45.71 Go with me to I Corinthians chapter 12 and verses 12 and 13. 00:55:46.01\00:55:51.46 I Corinthians chapter 12 and verses 12... actually 00:55:51.76\00:55:56.64 verses 13 and 14. 00:55:56.74\00:55:58.66 I Corinthians chapter 12 and verses 13 and 14. 00:55:59.06\00:56:03.82 Here the apostle Paul says this: 00:56:04.22\00:56:06.31 Now how do we join the body of Christ 00:56:30.01\00:56:32.68 according to this? 00:56:32.98\00:56:34.25 "We were all baptized into one body. " 00:56:34.55\00:56:39.08 And what is the body? The body is the church. 00:56:39.58\00:56:42.78 By the way, do you know that in Acts chapter 2 verses 41 and 47 00:56:43.02\00:56:46.68 it says that on the Day of Pentecost 00:56:46.88\00:56:49.50 3,000 souls were added to them? 00:56:49.70\00:56:53.90 And then it says in verse 47 00:56:54.10\00:56:56.27 that God added to the church those who would be saved. 00:56:56.48\00:57:00.87 So baptism means union with Christ personally 00:57:01.07\00:57:06.17 and it also means union with His church... 00:57:06.40\00:57:10.65 with His body. 00:57:10.75\00:57:12.20 Union with Jesus and union with His church. 00:57:12.40\00:57:15.26 In other words, we become members of His family. 00:57:15.56\00:57:19.25 What a marvelous blessing this is! 00:57:19.45\00:57:23.03
