Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:01:12.44\00:01:13.82 Our Father in heaven, we thank You for this wonderful day 00:01:13.85\00:01:18.54 that You have given us. 00:01:18.57\00:01:19.65 We thank You for the privilege of being here, once again, 00:01:19.68\00:01:23.39 to open Your Holy Word, and learn from You. 00:01:23.42\00:01:26.82 We ask that as we open the book of Genesis, and other books 00:01:26.85\00:01:32.07 of the Bible that relate to this wonderful book, 00:01:32.10\00:01:34.77 we ask that Your Holy Spirit will be with us. 00:01:34.80\00:01:37.98 Enlighten our minds, and give us tenderness of heart 00:01:38.01\00:01:41.70 to receive what You have for us. 00:01:41.73\00:01:43.86 We thank You for hearing our prayer for we ask it 00:01:43.89\00:01:46.91 in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:01:46.94\00:01:49.93 I'd like to begin our study today at the place where 00:01:49.96\00:01:55.93 we began our study last time. 00:01:55.96\00:01:58.84 And, of course, that has to do with the first two chapters 00:01:58.87\00:02:04.13 of the book of Genesis. 00:02:04.16\00:02:05.42 What I'm going to do is review certain very important elements 00:02:05.45\00:02:11.17 that will be fundamental for what we're going to discuss 00:02:11.20\00:02:14.88 in this evening's lecture. 00:02:14.91\00:02:17.80 First of all, I would like to underline the fact that I've 00:02:17.83\00:02:23.21 mentioned many times before, and that is that Jesus Christ 00:02:23.24\00:02:29.05 was the Creator of Genesis 1. 00:02:29.08\00:02:34.34 Jesus Christ was the Creator of Genesis 1. 00:02:34.37\00:02:38.18 That's critically important for what we're going to discuss 00:02:38.21\00:02:42.75 in our lecture today. 00:02:42.78\00:02:44.34 The second point that I want us to notice in our study is found 00:02:44.37\00:02:48.64 in Genesis 1:31-2:1, Genesis 1: 31-2:1. 00:02:48.67\00:02:59.63 Notice what it says: 00:02:59.66\00:03:01.85 And now notice verse 1: 00:03:15.98\00:03:18.73 Question: When did Jesus finish His work of creation? 00:03:27.44\00:03:33.04 On which day? Very clearly, He finished on the sixth day. 00:03:33.07\00:03:39.25 Correct? Now, let's notice verse 2. 00:03:39.28\00:03:45.10 It says in Genesis 2:2: And on the seventh day God ended 00:03:45.13\00:03:53.95 his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day 00:03:53.98\00:03:58.97 from all his work which he had done. 00:03:59.00\00:04:02.37 Three points that I want us to notice: 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.28 1. Jesus was the Creator. 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.45 2. Jesus finished His work of creation on the sixth day. 00:04:07.48\00:04:13.45 3. Jesus rested on the seventh day. 00:04:13.48\00:04:19.82 We're going to come back to this later on in our study. 00:04:19.85\00:04:23.50 It's critically important. 00:04:23.53\00:04:25.47 Now I want you to notice also as we review what we studied 00:04:25.50\00:04:29.86 in our last lecture, that man did not do any work 00:04:29.89\00:04:35.93 in order to exist. 00:04:35.96\00:04:37.50 I believe that that point is clear. 00:04:37.53\00:04:39.82 Jesus Christ performed all the work. 00:04:39.85\00:04:43.75 And when man was created he was created to rejoice and to rest 00:04:43.78\00:04:52.19 in the work which Jesus had made. 00:04:52.22\00:04:54.94 In other words, every thing that Adam and Eve enjoyed, 00:04:54.97\00:04:58.28 they enjoyed because Jesus had worked to create it. 00:04:58.31\00:05:02.35 All they could do was rest in the work that Jesus had done, 00:05:02.38\00:05:07.69 because Jesus was the Creator. 00:05:07.72\00:05:10.22 Another point, which we studied in our last lecture, 00:05:10.25\00:05:14.08 is that the day begins in the evening. 00:05:14.11\00:05:17.98 You know, it was the Romans who established the custom 00:05:18.01\00:05:21.68 of starting the day at midnight. 00:05:21.71\00:05:24.13 And, you know, basically we followed that custom 00:05:24.16\00:05:28.35 of starting the day at midnight. 00:05:28.38\00:05:30.12 But biblically the day starts at the evening, 00:05:30.15\00:05:33.05 with the setting of the sun. 00:05:33.08\00:05:35.67 In other words, when the sun set on the sixth day, that is when 00:05:35.70\00:05:41.77 the seventh day Sabbath began, and it lasts from sundown 00:05:41.80\00:05:46.42 the sixth day on Friday, through sundown on what we know as 00:05:46.46\00:05:51.98 Saturday, or sundown on the Sabbath. 00:05:52.02\00:05:53.90 In other words, keeping the Sabbath means observing 00:05:53.94\00:05:56.62 twenty-four hours. 00:05:56.65\00:05:58.36 It's not going to church only on Saturday. 00:05:58.39\00:06:02.60 It means resting from our endeavors, resting in what Jesus 00:06:02.63\00:06:07.80 has done, enjoying His creative works that we did 00:06:07.83\00:06:11.61 not work to perform. 00:06:11.64\00:06:13.15 And that is to last twenty-four whole hours. 00:06:13.18\00:06:17.93 Don't you think it's wonderful that Jesus has given us 00:06:17.96\00:06:20.15 twenty-four hours to rest from everything that we do, 00:06:20.18\00:06:24.40 and to enjoy fellowship with Him, and to enjoy contemplating 00:06:24.43\00:06:29.37 the works that He has performed? 00:06:29.40\00:06:31.26 I think it's wonderful that He has done this for us. 00:06:31.29\00:06:34.54 Now I want you to remember these details, because we're going to 00:06:34.57\00:06:38.18 come back to them a little bit later on. 00:06:38.21\00:06:40.28 Reviewing: 1. Jesus was the Creator. 00:06:40.31\00:06:42.68 2. Jesus finished His work of creation the sixth day. 00:06:42.71\00:06:46.69 3. Jesus rested from His work of creation on the seventh day. 00:06:46.72\00:06:52.20 4. Man did not perform any work. 00:06:52.23\00:06:55.59 Jesus did all of the work, and man simply was to enjoy 00:06:55.62\00:06:59.67 the fruit of the labor of Jesus. 00:06:59.70\00:07:02.02 5. The day begins at the setting of the sun. 00:07:02.05\00:07:06.45 Now I would like us to go to Exodus 16. 00:07:06.48\00:07:11.27 We find some very interesting details about the Sabbath 00:07:11.30\00:07:15.71 in this experience of ancient Israel. 00:07:15.74\00:07:18.56 Exodus 16, and we're going to read several verses from this 00:07:18.59\00:07:24.42 chapter, because they're important for what we'll discuss 00:07:24.45\00:07:27.24 later on in our lecture. 00:07:27.27\00:07:28.70 We're going to begin at verse 22, Exodus 16:22. It says: 00:07:28.73\00:07:38.03 Did you catch that? 00:07:43.07\00:07:44.10 Which day? sixth day. 00:07:44.13\00:07:46.42 Is there a sixth day mentioned in Genesis 1? 00:07:46.61\00:07:49.49 Yes, there is. Okay? 00:07:49.52\00:07:51.20 By the way, they're picking up the manna, or the bread which 00:08:03.11\00:08:06.32 God rained down from heaven for forty years. 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.86 Now notice verse 23: 00:08:09.89\00:08:11.90 He's speaking of the sixth day isn't He? 00:08:17.84\00:08:20.60 Now if He's saying this the sixth day, 00:08:26.99\00:08:28.85 what would tomorrow be? 00:08:28.88\00:08:29.96 It would be the seventh day, that's right. 00:08:29.99\00:08:32.92 Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath unto Moses. 00:08:32.95\00:08:38.77 I did that on purpose. 00:08:42.33\00:08:43.51 I might need glasses, but not that bad. 00:08:43.54\00:08:47.88 It says, once again, This is what the Lord has said: 00:08:47.91\00:08:53.60 Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest,... 00:08:53.63\00:08:55.67 By the way, the manna fell six days a week, 00:09:09.24\00:09:13.25 and they were supposed to pick up the manna six days a week. 00:09:13.28\00:09:16.81 But on Friday, the sixth day, twice the amount of manna fell, 00:09:16.84\00:09:21.31 because they were not supposed to go out to look for manna 00:09:21.34\00:09:24.20 on the Sabbath, because God did not rain manna from heaven 00:09:24.23\00:09:27.29 on the Sabbath. Now notice once again verse 24. 00:09:27.32\00:09:31.20 And this is very important now. 00:09:34.32\00:09:36.57 You see, if they picked it up any other day for the next day, 00:09:44.46\00:09:48.52 the manna had two characteristics: 00:09:48.55\00:09:50.95 1. It bread worms. 2. It stank. 00:09:50.98\00:09:57.06 Are you catching my point? 00:09:57.09\00:09:59.31 Remember this, because we're going to come back to it again. 00:09:59.34\00:10:02.27 This is really a Messianic prophecy. 00:10:02.30\00:10:05.72 Now notice verse 25: Then Moses said, Eat that today for today 00:10:05.75\00:10:14.65 is a Sabbath to the Lord. 00:10:14.68\00:10:17.18 There it is again. 00:10:17.21\00:10:18.24 Every time that the Sabbath is mentioned in scripture, 00:10:18.27\00:10:20.79 it is a Sabbath of the Lord, a Sabbath to the Lord. 00:10:20.82\00:10:24.23 It is not a Sabbath of the Jews. 00:10:24.26\00:10:26.46 It is not a Sabbath of Moses. And so it says: 00:10:26.49\00:10:29.84 Which day is the Sabbath? 00:10:47.38\00:10:48.50 Does it say every seventh day? 00:10:48.53\00:10:52.14 Is every seventh day the Sabbath? No. 00:10:52.17\00:10:55.79 The seventh day is the Sabbath, after six days 00:10:55.82\00:11:01.69 of picking up manna. 00:11:01.72\00:11:03.17 Are you following what this is saying? 00:11:03.20\00:11:04.48 By the way, does this square with creation? 00:11:04.51\00:11:07.24 It most certainly does. 00:11:07.27\00:11:08.96 Now notice verse 27: Now it happened that some of the people 00:11:08.99\00:11:12.71 went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. 00:11:12.74\00:11:17.39 And the Lord said to Moses, How long do you refuse 00:11:17.42\00:11:22.11 to keep my commandments and my laws? 00:11:22.14\00:11:24.98 Now this is before Exodus 20, when the ten commandments 00:11:26.08\00:11:29.02 were given. This is four chapters earlier. 00:11:29.05\00:11:32.10 And yet God is telling them, How long do you not keep 00:11:32.13\00:11:35.17 my commandments and my laws? 00:11:35.20\00:11:36.47 Obviously, the Sabbath was a commandment of God before 00:11:36.50\00:11:39.76 God gave it on Mount Sinai. 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.53 Now notice verse 29: See, for the Lord has given you 00:11:41.56\00:11:48.33 the Sabbath. Therefore he gives you on the sixth day bread for 00:11:48.36\00:11:54.90 two days. Let every man remain in his place. 00:11:54.93\00:11:58.78 Let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. 00:11:58.81\00:12:02.79 And some people take that to mean, well everybody has to 00:12:02.82\00:12:04.98 stay home on the Sabbath. 00:12:05.01\00:12:06.11 That's not what it's saying. 00:12:06.14\00:12:07.29 It's saying, you're not supposed to go out of your place 00:12:07.32\00:12:09.64 to pick up manna on the Sabbath. 00:12:09.67\00:12:11.48 It doesn't mean that you can't go out of your house to go to 00:12:11.51\00:12:15.06 the temple to worship on Sabbath. 00:12:15.09\00:12:16.92 It's to pick up manna that they were not supposed to go out. 00:12:16.95\00:12:20.24 And then notice verse 30: So the people rested 00:12:20.27\00:12:24.99 on the seventh day. 00:12:25.02\00:12:26.85 Do you notice the number of times here that you have 00:12:26.88\00:12:28.83 a reference to the seventh day as being the Sabbath? 00:12:28.86\00:12:32.23 Do you notice that six days are mentioned? 00:12:32.26\00:12:35.68 Do you notice that the sixth day is mentioned? 00:12:35.71\00:12:37.98 Do you notice that it says that the Sabbath is a Sabbath of the 00:12:38.01\00:12:41.09 Lord? Is this the same scenario that we have in Genesis? 00:12:41.13\00:12:44.58 Yes or No? Absolutely! 00:12:44.61\00:12:46.20 The very same expressions. 00:12:46.23\00:12:47.68 Is the Sabbath of Exodus 16 the same Sabbath of Genesis 1 00:12:47.71\00:12:53.71 and 2? No doubt whatsoever. 00:12:53.74\00:12:55.91 It's the same Sabbath. 00:12:55.94\00:12:57.18 Now I want you to remember the details that we find in this 00:12:57.21\00:13:02.10 story about the manna, particularly the fact that 00:13:02.13\00:13:05.04 double manna fell on the sixth day. 00:13:05.07\00:13:07.02 On the seventh day the manna was just as fresh as it was 00:13:07.05\00:13:11.95 on the sixth day. 00:13:11.98\00:13:13.15 It did not breed worms or stink. 00:13:13.18\00:13:16.31 Remember that, because that is a Messianic prophecy. 00:13:16.34\00:13:19.64 We will come back to it later on. 00:13:19.67\00:13:21.87 Now lets go to Exodus 20:8, Exodus 20:8. 00:13:21.90\00:13:28.56 Here we find recorded the ten commandments of the law of God. 00:13:28.59\00:13:33.02 Some people would like to make these the nine commandments. 00:13:33.05\00:13:36.01 Some people would rather have no commandments. 00:13:36.04\00:13:38.98 But God gave ten commandments. 00:13:39.01\00:13:41.74 And you'll notice the fourth commandment of His law 00:13:41.77\00:13:45.63 is found in verse 8. 00:13:45.66\00:13:47.66 By the way, you can't remember something that hasn't happened 00:13:51.79\00:13:54.68 in the past. For example, a few months from now I'll be saying, 00:13:54.71\00:13:59.13 Do you remember when we did the Genesis series? 00:13:59.16\00:14:01.96 How can I say, Do you remember when we did the Genesis series? 00:14:01.99\00:14:07.24 It's because it's something that happened in the past. 00:14:07.27\00:14:09.96 In other words, the fourth commandment is sending us to the 00:14:09.99\00:14:12.89 past. Where in the past? 00:14:12.92\00:14:14.81 It is sending us back to Genesis, back to creation. 00:14:14.84\00:14:19.96 And then God gives the reason why He told them 00:14:43.36\00:14:46.68 to keep the Sabbath. 00:14:46.71\00:14:47.74 Notice that it's not because they're Jews, 00:14:47.77\00:14:51.40 or for any contemporary reason of that period. 00:14:51.43\00:14:55.03 He actually sends them back to creation for the reason 00:14:55.06\00:14:59.34 to observe the Sabbath. 00:14:59.37\00:15:01.02 Notice verse 11: 00:15:01.05\00:15:02.46 That means because. 00:15:02.49\00:15:04.57 Did God do the same three things with the Sabbath in Genesis? 00:15:21.49\00:15:26.26 Did He bless the Sabbath? Yes, He did. 00:15:26.29\00:15:28.59 Did He sanctify the Sabbath? Yes, He did. 00:15:28.62\00:15:32.37 Did He rest on the Sabbath? 00:15:32.40\00:15:33.88 He most certainly did. 00:15:33.91\00:15:35.38 Does the fourth commandment send Israel back to creation 00:15:35.41\00:15:40.25 for them to understand the reason why they are supposed 00:15:40.28\00:15:42.87 to keep the Sabbath holy? Yes. 00:15:42.90\00:15:44.94 Now let me ask you, How many Jews were there at creation? 00:15:44.97\00:15:47.85 None. The word Jew comes from Judah, who was the son of Jacob. 00:15:49.09\00:15:54.39 Even if you go back to the time of Abraham; 00:15:54.42\00:15:57.62 that's long after creation. 00:15:57.65\00:16:00.88 The Bible tells us that the reason why we are supposed to 00:16:00.91\00:16:05.12 observe the Sabbath, is because God made the Sabbath 00:16:05.15\00:16:08.48 at creation. He's saying to Adam and Eve in the beginning, 00:16:08.51\00:16:11.96 I want you to keep the Sabbath. 00:16:11.99\00:16:13.28 And now He tells Israel, I want you to keep the Sabbath 00:16:13.31\00:16:16.84 for the very same reason. 00:16:16.87\00:16:19.33 Now let's go to Exodus 31, Exodus 31, and let's examine 00:16:19.36\00:16:26.65 several concepts from this chapter, which very clearly 00:16:26.68\00:16:31.12 deals with the Sabbath. 00:16:31.15\00:16:32.94 Exodus 31:15, Exodus 31:15. 00:16:32.97\00:16:38.04 It says there in Exodus. 00:16:38.07\00:16:41.48 Did I say Genesis? 00:16:41.52\00:16:43.46 Exodus, Exodus 31. 00:16:43.49\00:16:46.06 I was here in Genesis. 00:16:46.09\00:16:47.30 Exodus 31:15, we find these words: 00:16:47.34\00:16:51.76 ...to Moses... No, it doesn't say that, it says: 00:17:03.81\00:17:08.03 Well, let me ask you, Which is the Lord's day? 00:17:09.13\00:17:11.49 If you take what the Bible says, what is the Lord's day? 00:17:11.52\00:17:16.06 The Lord's day is the Sabbath. So it says: 00:17:16.09\00:17:19.09 And now comes a very dire expression. It says, listen up, 00:17:21.27\00:17:27.37 whoever does any work... 00:17:27.40\00:17:29.64 And do you know what Christians say? Many Christians? 00:17:35.51\00:17:39.28 They say, listen, if you say that we're supposed to keep 00:17:39.31\00:17:42.13 the Sabbath, then you have to execute the death penalty 00:17:42.16\00:17:45.38 against those who don't keep it. 00:17:45.41\00:17:46.76 That's a fallacious argument, and let me tell you why. 00:17:49.65\00:17:53.70 Do you know that also it says in the Mosaic legislation that 00:17:53.73\00:17:58.83 whoever committed adultery was supposed to be put to death? 00:17:58.86\00:18:01.81 So I suppose that because we don't put people to death for 00:18:03.99\00:18:06.65 committing adultery today, it's okay to commit adultery. 00:18:06.68\00:18:09.14 Is it? Is it okay to commit adultery, because we don't 00:18:11.85\00:18:15.41 put people to death? Of course not. 00:18:15.69\00:18:17.75 You see, in this period they were under the theocracy. 00:18:17.78\00:18:21.19 God was the direct ruler of Israel. 00:18:21.22\00:18:23.68 And God as the direct ruler of Israel, 00:18:23.71\00:18:27.14 could tell this to Israel. 00:18:27.17\00:18:30.00 But let me tell you, the principle still applies. 00:18:30.03\00:18:32.64 We don't go around killing people for breaking the Sabbath, 00:18:32.67\00:18:35.03 but eventually, if we knowingly break the Sabbath, 00:18:35.06\00:18:38.28 if we knowingly trample the Sabbath, will God hold us 00:18:38.31\00:18:42.01 accountable, and responsible, just as much as if we knowingly 00:18:42.04\00:18:45.85 commit adultery, or knowingly kill, or knowingly steal, 00:18:45.88\00:18:51.15 or break any of the other commandments? 00:18:51.18\00:18:53.61 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:18:53.64\00:18:54.84 Now let's go back to Exodus 31 and read verse 17, Exodus 31:17. 00:18:54.87\00:19:03.64 Here we find an additional detail, 00:19:03.67\00:19:05.96 which is very interesting. 00:19:05.99\00:19:07.24 We find the following words there: Exodus 31:17. 00:19:07.27\00:19:13.56 It is a sign, that is the Sabbath. 00:19:13.59\00:19:20.28 And then it gives a reason again. 00:19:27.15\00:19:30.53 What is the reason why God says that Israel is to observe the 00:19:39.11\00:19:43.07 Sabbath, and it is an everlasting sign? 00:19:43.10\00:19:45.13 Because He made it when? at creation. 00:19:45.16\00:19:47.79 Once again, it sends us to creation. 00:19:47.82\00:19:49.94 And I know someone is saying, Yes, Pastor Bohr, 00:19:49.97\00:19:52.02 but here it says that it's a sign between God and Israel 00:19:52.05\00:19:54.89 forever. Let me ask you, Are we Israel? 00:19:54.92\00:19:59.82 Are we? Well, let's go to the New Testament, because I see 00:20:02.41\00:20:06.60 some of you are kind of incredulous. 00:20:06.63\00:20:09.63 That means that we have some unbelievers in the camp. 00:20:09.67\00:20:13.12 Now, let's notice what we find in the book of Galatians 3, 00:20:13.15\00:20:18.27 and we'll begin at verse 26, Galatians 3:26. 00:20:18.30\00:20:25.07 Here the apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, says this: 00:20:25.10\00:20:29.81 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 00:20:29.84\00:20:35.73 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ 00:20:35.76\00:20:40.95 have put on Christ. 00:20:40.98\00:20:42.80 So whoever's been baptized into Christ has put on Christ. 00:20:42.83\00:20:47.46 In other words, that person is a Christian. 00:20:47.49\00:20:49.98 Verse 28: There is neither Jew nor Greek, 00:20:50.01\00:20:54.31 there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male 00:20:54.34\00:20:57.93 nor female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 00:20:57.96\00:21:02.45 And now notice verse 29: 00:21:02.48\00:21:03.92 What does it mean to be Abraham's seed? 00:21:12.32\00:21:14.84 It means to belong to whom? to Christ. 00:21:14.87\00:21:19.04 So if the Sabbath was an everlasting sign between God 00:21:19.07\00:21:22.46 and Israel, and when we join Jesus Christ, we are children 00:21:22.49\00:21:27.49 of Abraham, or the seed of Abraham, that is Israel, 00:21:27.52\00:21:30.96 is the Sabbath an everlasting sign between God and us as well? 00:21:30.99\00:21:35.26 Absolutely! In fact, do you know that the Jews who are keeping 00:21:35.29\00:21:38.75 the Sabbath today, according to the Bible, aren't even Jews? 00:21:38.78\00:21:43.89 You're saying, Now how is this? 00:21:43.92\00:21:47.21 Go with me to the book of Romans very quickly; Romans 2:28, 29, 00:21:47.24\00:21:54.72 Romans 2:28, 29. Notice what the apostle Paul has to say here. 00:21:54.75\00:22:00.43 By the way, the apostle Paul was a Jew, wasn't he? 00:22:00.46\00:22:03.71 And he says here in Romans 2:28, For he is not a Jew, who is one 00:22:03.74\00:22:11.87 outwardly; nor is circumcision that which is outward 00:22:11.90\00:22:20.17 in the flesh... He says a Jew is not a Jew because he appears 00:22:20.20\00:22:25.18 one outwardly, or because he's circumcised, in other words. 00:22:25.21\00:22:29.18 ...But he is a Jew, who is one inwardly; and circumcision 00:22:29.21\00:22:36.42 is that of the heart, in the spirit,... 00:22:36.45\00:22:40.81 That is those who have received the spirit. 00:22:40.84\00:22:42.54 ...in the spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not 00:22:42.57\00:22:46.84 from men, but from God. 00:22:46.87\00:22:49.26 What does it mean to be a Jew? 00:22:49.29\00:22:52.11 Does it really mean anything to be a literal Jew, 00:22:52.14\00:22:55.83 and reject Jesus Christ? 00:22:55.86\00:22:57.15 The apostle Paul says that that is not a Jew. 00:22:57.18\00:22:59.95 A Jew is one who is one inwardly, who has been 00:22:59.98\00:23:03.18 converted to Jesus, who has received the Holy Spirit. 00:23:03.21\00:23:06.20 And because the Sabbath is a sign between Israel and God 00:23:06.23\00:23:10.38 forever, if we are Israel, the Sabbath is a sign between 00:23:10.41\00:23:14.69 God and us as well. 00:23:15.02\00:23:16.77 Are you catching my point or not? 00:23:16.80\00:23:18.87 Now lets go to Exodus 31:18, Exodus 31:18. 00:23:18.90\00:23:28.31 This is the conclusion of this whole passage on the observance 00:23:28.34\00:23:33.17 of the Sabbath, and it's very, very, significant that this 00:23:33.20\00:23:36.25 verse is placed in this position. 00:23:36.28\00:23:38.04 It says in verse 18: And when he had made an end of speaking with 00:23:38.07\00:23:43.99 them... That is God speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai. 00:23:44.02\00:23:47.66 ...He gave Moses two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, 00:23:47.70\00:23:55.31 written with the finger of Moses. 00:23:55.34\00:23:59.29 It says... written with the finger of God. 00:23:59.32\00:24:05.55 Now listen up, there's only one thing in all of the Bible that 00:24:05.58\00:24:08.50 God wrote with His own finger, and that is 00:24:08.53\00:24:11.58 the ten commandments. 00:24:11.61\00:24:12.64 All of the rest of the Bible God gave to a prophet, 00:24:14.52\00:24:17.34 and the prophet wrote. 00:24:17.37\00:24:18.57 Now I know somebody says, What about in Daniel where the finger 00:24:18.60\00:24:23.03 writes on the wall? 00:24:23.06\00:24:24.09 It doesn't say there that it was God who wrote that on the wall. 00:24:24.12\00:24:26.89 It was one of the watchers, who are angels. 00:24:26.92\00:24:30.99 The only thing in the Bible which God explicitly wrote 00:24:31.02\00:24:34.83 with His own finger was the ten commandments. 00:24:34.86\00:24:37.73 Do you think the ten commandments are in a special 00:24:37.76\00:24:39.67 category then? Do you think that they occupy a special place? 00:24:39.70\00:24:44.40 That God did not even entrust the writing of the 00:24:44.43\00:24:47.30 ten commandments to a prophet, or to a writer, or to Moses? 00:24:47.33\00:24:50.74 He said, I'm going to write these Myself. 00:24:50.77\00:24:54.28 They must be extremely important. 00:24:54.31\00:24:56.76 It's interesting that He says this immediately after saying 00:24:56.79\00:25:00.10 that the Sabbath is an everlasting sign between 00:25:00.13\00:25:03.75 Him and His people. 00:25:03.78\00:25:06.03 Now there's a fact that is very seldom recognized among 00:25:06.06\00:25:11.97 Christians, and that is that God gave the Sabbath to Israel 00:25:12.00\00:25:16.46 for another reason. 00:25:16.49\00:25:17.82 Go with me to Deuteronomy 5 and let's read verses 12-15. 00:25:17.85\00:25:24.91 Deuteronomy 5:12-15. 00:25:24.94\00:25:30.67 You're going to notice that there's a second motivation 00:25:30.70\00:25:33.30 here for observing the Sabbath: not only creation, 00:25:33.33\00:25:36.86 but also another motivation for observing the Sabbath. 00:25:36.89\00:25:41.50 So once again, the reference is Deuteronomy 5:12-15. 00:25:41.53\00:25:49.18 It says here: 00:25:49.21\00:25:50.58 And now notice verse 15. 00:26:22.32\00:26:24.49 What is the motivation for observing the Sabbath in this 00:26:43.34\00:26:46.48 passage? It is not creation, it is what? 00:26:46.51\00:26:49.85 It is redemption. God redeemed Israel from bondage in Egypt 00:26:49.88\00:26:56.38 when they could not deliver themselves. 00:26:56.41\00:26:58.84 They were slaves to Pharaoh, who in the Bible is called the 00:26:58.87\00:27:02.34 great dragon. There was no way that they could be delivered. 00:27:02.37\00:27:05.91 And because they cried out to God, God intervened, 00:27:05.94\00:27:09.23 and He delivered them from bondage in Egypt. 00:27:09.26\00:27:12.32 He gave them freedom. 00:27:12.35\00:27:13.85 And God says, in order to commemorate your deliverance 00:27:13.88\00:27:17.12 from bondage, and your freedom, now I want you to 00:27:17.15\00:27:20.43 keep holy the Sabbath. 00:27:20.47\00:27:22.23 And so God gave Israel two reasons 00:27:22.26\00:27:25.38 for observing the Sabbath: first because of creation, 00:27:25.41\00:27:28.93 and secondly, because of redemption. 00:27:28.96\00:27:32.69 In other words, the Sabbath also has a redemption purpose. 00:27:32.72\00:27:37.04 Now before we pursue this thought, I need to go through 00:27:37.07\00:27:40.82 the rest of the Old Testament very quickly. 00:27:40.85\00:27:42.77 I'm not going to look up these verses. 00:27:42.80\00:27:44.56 You'll have them in the handout this evening. 00:27:44.59\00:27:47.21 They're all there explained. 00:27:47.24\00:27:48.91 You can read them for yourself. 00:27:48.94\00:27:50.19 You can fill in the blanks. 00:27:50.22\00:27:52.09 You know, it's a wonderful thing to do this, because you check 00:27:52.12\00:27:56.37 it out for yourself. 00:27:56.50\00:27:57.53 You don't believe me; I don't want you to believe me 00:27:57.56\00:27:59.98 unless you can find it in God's holy word. 00:28:00.01\00:28:02.42 Now allow me to mention several other references to the Sabbath 00:28:02.45\00:28:05.84 in the Old Testament before we go to speak about 00:28:05.87\00:28:08.52 the New Testament, and the Sabbath. 00:28:08.55\00:28:10.53 Isaiah 56, which was mentioned this evening in the question 00:28:10.56\00:28:14.69 and answer period, tells us very clearly that the Sabbath, 00:28:14.72\00:28:19.28 even in the Old Testament, was meant to be kept by the nations 00:28:19.31\00:28:24.38 other than Israel. 00:28:24.41\00:28:25.58 The word nations there is the Hebrew word goyim, 00:28:25.61\00:28:30.52 which means the Gentiles; not only the nations in general, 00:28:30.55\00:28:34.92 but the Gentiles. An God says that when the Gentiles, 00:28:34.95\00:28:38.69 and when the eunuchs observe the Sabbath, and they come to 00:28:38.72\00:28:44.47 God's house of prayer, God's house of prayer will be called 00:28:44.50\00:28:48.42 a house of prayer for whom? for all peoples. 00:28:48.45\00:28:54.28 In other words, the purpose for the observance of the Sabbath 00:28:54.31\00:28:57.66 was not only for the Jews, even in the Old Testament. 00:28:57.69\00:29:00.98 God says that it was His purpose for the eunuchs, 00:29:01.01\00:29:04.85 and also for the nations, for the goyim, so to speak, 00:29:04.88\00:29:09.44 to keep the Holy Sabbath. 00:29:09.47\00:29:11.36 Even in the Old Testament it was the plan of God 00:29:11.39\00:29:14.44 that the Gentiles participate in the observance of the Sabbath. 00:29:14.47\00:29:17.80 Now go with me to Isaiah 58: 13, 14. 00:29:17.83\00:29:21.76 This is one that we are going to read, and then I'll mention 00:29:21.79\00:29:24.93 the rest of the Old Testament texts. 00:29:24.96\00:29:26.77 Isaiah 58:13, 14. And the reason why I'm going to read this is 00:29:26.80\00:29:32.16 because it gives us several important principles 00:29:32.19\00:29:34.59 of Sabbath observance. Isaiah 58:13, 14. 00:29:34.62\00:29:41.14 What does that mean, turn away your foot? 00:29:45.89\00:29:49.04 It means that you're not going to what? 00:29:49.07\00:29:50.65 You're not going to trample on the Sabbath. 00:29:50.68\00:29:53.30 You're going to remove your foot from the Sabbath. 00:29:53.33\00:29:55.68 Whose holy day? God's holy day. 00:30:06.04\00:30:08.65 ...burden, a yoke of bondage, hello! 00:30:12.71\00:30:22.28 That's not what it says. 00:30:22.31\00:30:23.46 And call the Sabbath a delight. 00:30:23.49\00:30:27.06 What is the Sabbath? honorable, a delight, according to this. 00:30:32.96\00:30:39.23 Notice, not doing your own ways. 00:30:40.85\00:30:43.39 We do our own ways the first six days. 00:30:43.42\00:30:45.32 In other words, we shift from the secular to the what? 00:30:52.38\00:30:56.51 to the sacred on the holy Sabbath. 00:30:56.54\00:30:59.61 By the way, that's the land of Canaan in the Old Testament. 00:31:10.26\00:31:13.19 But Abraham did not look only to the little land of Canaan, 00:31:13.22\00:31:16.29 he was a type of those who looked for a city whose builder 00:31:16.32\00:31:20.25 and maker is God, according to Hebrews 11. 00:31:20.28\00:31:23.74 And so God says, I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob 00:31:23.77\00:31:28.41 your father, and then He promises, the mouth of the Lord 00:31:28.44\00:31:32.50 has spoken. There are other references in the Old Testament 00:31:32.53\00:31:36.63 to the Sabbath. Jeremiah 17: 24, 27, I'll just mention these 00:31:36.66\00:31:41.81 in passing. God says that the reason why Israel went into 00:31:41.84\00:31:45.03 bondage in Babylon is because they didn't keep the Sabbath. 00:31:45.06\00:31:47.84 In fact, He says that if they had kept the Sabbath, 00:31:47.87\00:31:51.02 Jerusalem would not have been destroyed by Babylon. 00:31:51.05\00:31:53.40 Jerusalem would have remained forever as the capitol 00:31:53.43\00:31:57.42 of God's kingdom, if they had kept and observed the Sabbath. 00:31:57.45\00:32:00.66 Ezekiel 20:20 says that the Sabbath is a sign between 00:32:00.69\00:32:06.10 God and His people, so that His people might know 00:32:06.13\00:32:09.03 that He is Jehovah God. 00:32:09.06\00:32:11.96 Nehemiah 13:15-19; you have a very interesting story. 00:32:11.99\00:32:18.82 This is after the Babylonian captivity, after they were taken 00:32:18.85\00:32:21.91 captive for breaking the Sabbath. 00:32:21.94\00:32:24.45 It appears that they were falling into their bad habits 00:32:24.48\00:32:27.25 again, because Nehemiah says, that they were doing business 00:32:27.28\00:32:32.48 in Jerusalem on the Sabbath, and there were merchants coming 00:32:32.51\00:32:36.20 from Tyre, the southern region of Lebanon, by the way. 00:32:36.23\00:32:40.42 I had the privilege of being there once; 00:32:40.45\00:32:42.16 pretty scary experience, but I won't dwell on that right now. 00:32:42.19\00:32:46.83 But it's interesting that the men from Tyre were selling their 00:32:46.86\00:32:50.99 wares, and they were selling fish. 00:32:51.02\00:32:53.18 And so Nehemiah protested to them, and he says, listen, 00:32:53.21\00:32:58.49 this is the very reason why God sent you to bondage 00:32:58.52\00:33:01.16 in the first place. 00:33:01.19\00:33:02.22 He says, don't do this, because this is the reason why the wrath 00:33:02.25\00:33:07.83 of God was poured out upon you. 00:33:07.86\00:33:09.64 And then the passage says that God, through Nehemiah, 00:33:09.67\00:33:14.74 had the gates of Jerusalem closed, it says, when it began 00:33:14.77\00:33:20.26 to be dark. Does that tell us something about when the Sabbath 00:33:20.29\00:33:24.03 begins? Absolutely! 00:33:24.06\00:33:26.80 He had the gates closed when it began to be dark, 00:33:26.83\00:33:30.83 so that no business transactions would be done on the Sabbath, 00:33:30.86\00:33:38.25 because business transactions are our own pleasure. 00:33:38.28\00:33:42.18 It is a secular activity. 00:33:42.21\00:33:44.69 And so all throughout the Old Testament we have clear 00:33:44.72\00:33:48.45 references to the observance of the Sabbath; 00:33:48.48\00:33:50.82 God's plan for Jews, God's plan for Gentiles. 00:33:50.85\00:33:54.20 But now we must move quickly to the New Testament. 00:33:54.23\00:33:57.09 I'll just mention some of these verses in passing, 00:33:57.12\00:33:59.92 because there are two or three points that I want to emphasize 00:33:59.95\00:34:03.33 before we draw this to a close. 00:34:03.36\00:34:05.42 First of all, I'd like to mention, once again, 00:34:05.45\00:34:08.76 that Genesis 1:1 is repeated in John 1:1, 3. 00:34:08.79\00:34:13.96 The same three elements: in the beginning, 00:34:13.99\00:34:17.37 God created everything; made the heavens and the earth, 00:34:17.40\00:34:23.10 created the heavens and the earth. 00:34:23.13\00:34:24.61 All things were made by the Word who is God, who existed 00:34:24.64\00:34:28.27 in the beginning. 00:34:28.30\00:34:29.33 In other words, the Creator was Jesus Christ. 00:34:29.36\00:34:32.11 Let me ask you then, would you expect Jesus to keep the Sabbath 00:34:32.14\00:34:34.83 when He came to this earth? 00:34:34.86\00:34:36.21 Would you expect Jesus to keep the Sabbath, the day that He 00:34:37.88\00:34:40.16 made as the day of rest? 00:34:40.19\00:34:41.42 Of course. And that's the reason why in Luke 4:16 it says that 00:34:41.45\00:34:47.26 Jesus came to Nazareth... 00:34:47.29\00:34:48.77 What is a custom? It is a habit. 00:34:53.12\00:34:56.11 Which day did Jesus customarily go to church, 00:35:02.59\00:35:06.12 which was the synagogue in that day? 00:35:06.15\00:35:07.86 He customarily went to church on Sabbath, 00:35:07.89\00:35:10.81 because that's the day that He established as the day that 00:35:10.84\00:35:14.51 we're supposed to go and worship before the Lord. 00:35:14.54\00:35:17.74 Now notice also Mark 2:27, 28. 00:35:17.77\00:35:22.81 The context of this is that Jesus and His disciples have 00:35:22.84\00:35:26.14 been crossing a field, and His disciples were hungry, 00:35:26.17\00:35:29.32 and they picked some grain from the field to eat. 00:35:29.35\00:35:32.14 And, of course, the Pharisees were there ready to condemn, 00:35:32.17\00:35:36.35 and they said, Why do Your disciples not obey the law? 00:35:36.38\00:35:40.23 Why are they harvesting on the Sabbath? 00:35:40.26\00:35:43.19 Well, you know what the Bible meant is that you're not 00:35:43.22\00:35:45.69 supposed to take out your combine. 00:35:45.72\00:35:47.25 There weren't combines back then, I know that. 00:35:47.28\00:35:49.11 You're not supposed to take out your combine and do the 00:35:49.14\00:35:51.54 harvesting of your crops on Sabbath. 00:35:51.57\00:35:53.12 It doesn't mean that if you're walking through a field, 00:35:53.15\00:35:55.57 and you're hungry, you can't take a few grains to satisfy 00:35:55.60\00:35:58.28 your hunger. It was the Pharisees who established 00:35:58.31\00:36:01.30 these rules. It wasn't God who established these rules. 00:36:01.33\00:36:03.99 And so they said, Your disciples are not doing what is lawful. 00:36:04.02\00:36:08.36 And this leads Jesus to say, Listen, 00:36:08.39\00:36:11.03 And then He says: 00:36:17.56\00:36:19.52 Do you know what Jesus is really saying? 00:36:23.27\00:36:24.58 He's saying, don't you tell Me how to keep the Sabbath. 00:36:24.61\00:36:27.52 I'm Lord of the Sabbath. 00:36:27.55\00:36:28.77 I made it, and so if anyone is going to define how it's kept, 00:36:28.80\00:36:32.53 it's Me. He's not saying that because He's Lord 00:36:32.56\00:36:37.71 He can do away with it. 00:36:37.74\00:36:39.06 He's saying that I'm Lord. 00:36:39.09\00:36:40.12 I define how the Sabbath is kept. 00:36:40.69\00:36:43.15 It was made for man. 00:36:43.18\00:36:44.29 You're making man to be bound to the Sabbath, 00:36:44.32\00:36:48.11 when the Sabbath was made as a blessing for man, 00:36:48.14\00:36:50.83 so that he could get away from his own endeavors, 00:36:50.86\00:36:53.08 and rest in Me, and enjoy My fellowship, and rejoice in his 00:36:53.11\00:36:57.21 relationship with Me. 00:36:57.24\00:36:58.27 You have made the Sabbath an enslaving commandment and rule 00:36:58.30\00:37:02.81 instead of what I intended originally for the Sabbath. 00:37:02.84\00:37:06.22 Are you understanding what I am saying? 00:37:06.25\00:37:07.51 Now go with me to Mark 3, and you'll see the extremes 00:37:07.54\00:37:11.12 to which the Pharisees went. 00:37:11.15\00:37:12.73 By the way, the Sabbath that Jesus condemned was not the 00:37:12.76\00:37:15.47 Biblical Sabbath, it was the Sabbath of the Pharisees. 00:37:15.50\00:37:18.22 This is the reason why many Christians reject the Sabbath, 00:37:18.25\00:37:21.84 it is because they think that the Sabbath of the Pharisees 00:37:21.87\00:37:23.95 is the Sabbath of the Lord. 00:37:23.98\00:37:25.14 You know, I don't want anything to do with the Sabbath 00:37:25.17\00:37:28.52 of the Pharisees. 00:37:28.55\00:37:29.58 Forget it! They were legalists. 00:37:29.61\00:37:32.33 The Sabbath was a day of misery for them, a day of restrictions. 00:37:32.36\00:37:36.31 But that's not the Bible Sabbath. 00:37:36.34\00:37:38.66 That is the Sabbath of the Pharisees. 00:37:38.69\00:37:40.70 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:37:40.73\00:37:42.71 And even today, Christian pastors will say, 00:37:42.74\00:37:45.50 Oh, don't listen to those people who talk about the Sabbath, 00:37:45.59\00:37:48.87 because they want you to be bound to the law again. 00:37:48.90\00:37:51.94 They want to put you under bondage. 00:37:51.97\00:37:53.78 Well, who gave the law? God. 00:37:55.33\00:37:57.07 So if God gave a law of bondage, what kind of God is God? 00:37:57.10\00:38:00.30 The law is not a law of bondage, it's called the law, 00:38:00.33\00:38:04.23 the perfect law of what? the perfect law of liberty. 00:38:04.26\00:38:09.46 Now lets notice Mark 3:1-6 just to give you an example. 00:38:09.49\00:38:16.07 I wish we had time. 00:38:16.10\00:38:17.13 I have a whole presentation just on Mark 3:1-6, 00:38:17.16\00:38:20.94 but we'll go through this very quickly. It says: 00:38:20.97\00:38:23.43 It's wrong to heal on the Sabbath, 00:38:33.49\00:38:34.72 but it's okay to accuse. 00:38:34.75\00:38:35.81 Because He knew that they were planning on killing Him. 00:38:55.54\00:38:57.72 See, it's wrong to heal on the Sabbath, 00:38:57.75\00:39:00.33 but it's okay to plan to kill someone. 00:39:00.36\00:39:01.93 Do you see the extremes to which they have taken this? It says: 00:39:01.96\00:39:07.99 They knew that when they opened their mouths 00:39:09.69\00:39:12.19 they were in trouble. 00:39:12.22\00:39:13.25 Did Jesus recreate his hand? 00:39:30.18\00:39:32.18 Did He recreate his hand? Yes. 00:39:32.21\00:39:35.78 So the Sabbath becomes a sign of the recreation of a hand. 00:39:35.81\00:39:39.73 And then it says: 00:39:39.76\00:39:41.63 On Sabbath, mind you. 00:39:43.44\00:39:45.16 The Bible doesn't say that. 00:39:45.19\00:39:47.32 Those are my words. 00:39:47.35\00:39:48.38 Jesus is healing on the Sabbath, and the Pharisees are planning 00:39:55.76\00:39:59.62 how they can destroy Jesus on the Sabbath. 00:39:59.65\00:40:02.84 Are you understanding that the Sabbath of the Pharisees 00:40:02.87\00:40:05.97 is not the Sabbath of the Lord? 00:40:06.00\00:40:07.82 The Sabbath of the Lord is a wonderful blessing. 00:40:07.85\00:40:10.83 It is honorable. It is a delight. 00:40:10.86\00:40:12.68 It is wonderful to observe. 00:40:12.71\00:40:14.41 To take twenty-four hours for our fellowship with Jesus; 00:40:14.44\00:40:18.30 quality time in the rat race of life. 00:40:18.33\00:40:21.82 Now, John 1 says that Jesus was the Creator. 00:40:21.85\00:40:28.21 But John 1 also says that Jesus became flesh, 00:40:28.24\00:40:34.69 and dwelt among us. 00:40:34.72\00:40:38.44 He came to this world to redeem us. 00:40:40.21\00:40:43.54 He came to this world to save us, to deliver us from bondage 00:40:43.57\00:40:48.96 to sin. And only He could do it because only He who created 00:40:48.99\00:40:53.99 all, could take the place of all, and redeem all. 00:40:54.02\00:40:58.04 And so Jesus the Creator comes to this earth 00:40:58.07\00:41:02.08 and He becomes the Redeemer. 00:41:02.11\00:41:03.55 Let me ask you, who worked for our salvation? 00:41:03.58\00:41:06.09 Did we? No. 00:41:06.12\00:41:08.47 Who lived a perfect life for us? He did. 00:41:08.50\00:41:12.42 Who died for us? 00:41:12.45\00:41:14.40 Who performed all of the work that was necessary to save us? 00:41:14.43\00:41:19.11 It was Jesus. We can do nothing to save ourselves. 00:41:19.14\00:41:26.11 We cannot work in order to be saved. Absolutely not. 00:41:26.14\00:41:30.75 Just like at creation Adam did not work to exist, 00:41:30.78\00:41:35.43 or to merit everything. 00:41:35.46\00:41:37.20 In salvation we don't work to merit salvation, 00:41:37.23\00:41:41.83 to merit the blessings of salvation in Christ. 00:41:41.86\00:41:45.53 Now let me ask you, which day of the week did Jesus die? 00:41:45.56\00:41:49.46 Now we look at the redemption dimension of the Sabbath. 00:41:49.49\00:41:54.02 Let's go to Mark 15, Mark 15:42, 43, Mark 15: 42, 43. 00:41:54.05\00:42:01.80 I know that you know what day Jesus died, 00:42:01.83\00:42:05.65 but let's read it anyway, Mark 15:42, 43. 00:42:05.69\00:42:10.03 Do you remember they wanted to take down the body of Jesus 00:42:12.96\00:42:17.19 from the cross, because it was about to start the Sabbath? 00:42:17.22\00:42:19.37 When did the Sabbath begin? It says here: 00:42:19.40\00:42:21.86 That's sunset. 00:42:23.35\00:42:24.39 What is the Preparation Day? 00:42:31.43\00:42:33.20 The day before the Sabbath. 00:42:33.23\00:42:35.02 What is the day before the Sabbath? 00:42:35.05\00:42:36.16 Friday, thank you. 00:42:36.19\00:42:38.51 That's why we call it Good Friday. 00:42:38.54\00:42:40.69 But we never hear people say Good Sabbath. 00:42:40.81\00:42:45.74 It's always Good Friday! 00:42:45.77\00:42:47.82 Resurrection Sunday! 00:42:47.85\00:42:49.39 And the Sabbath gets lost in the shuffle. 00:42:49.42\00:42:51.47 Because there's one who doesn't want us to know 00:42:51.50\00:42:54.55 about the Sabbath. 00:42:54.58\00:42:55.77 So what day did Jesus die? 00:42:55.80\00:42:59.88 He died the sixth day of the week. 00:42:59.91\00:43:04.18 Now what did Jesus say on the cross when He died? 00:43:04.21\00:43:08.58 Go with me to John 19, John 19, and let's read verse 30. 00:43:08.61\00:43:16.23 Do you remember when Jesus finished His works of creation? 00:43:16.26\00:43:18.62 Which day? Which day did Jesus finish His works of creation? 00:43:18.65\00:43:22.51 On the sixth day. 00:43:22.54\00:43:23.89 What does Genesis say about what happened on the sixth day? 00:43:23.92\00:43:28.85 Jesus finished. Do you remember the word finished in Genesis? 00:43:28.88\00:43:32.08 Now, what did Jesus say after He had completed 00:43:32.11\00:43:36.35 the work of redemption? 00:43:36.38\00:43:37.66 Notice John 19:30. It says here: 00:43:37.69\00:43:43.75 Did Jesus, the Redeemer, rest from His works of redemption 00:43:58.28\00:44:02.20 on the Sabbath, after working for mans redemption, 00:44:02.23\00:44:08.01 and dying for his redemption on the sixth day? Hello! 00:44:08.04\00:44:12.66 Is the Sabbath then also a sign of redemption? Yes it is. 00:44:12.69\00:44:18.03 In fact, I'll just mention this verse. 00:44:18.06\00:44:20.25 If you go to Luke 23:54-56, it says that the women 00:44:20.28\00:44:26.70 who followed Jesus, in the last moments of His life, 00:44:26.73\00:44:30.43 it says in verse 56, that they what? they rested 00:44:30.46\00:44:36.72 the Sabbath day, according to the commandment. 00:44:36.75\00:44:40.94 And what was Jesus doing in the tomb? 00:44:40.97\00:44:43.31 He was also resting. 00:44:43.34\00:44:46.10 You say, well, where does the Bible say that death is rest? 00:44:46.13\00:44:49.93 Let me just mention the verse. 00:44:49.96\00:44:51.35 Revelation 14:13: Blessed are those who die henceforth, 00:44:51.38\00:44:58.54 or from this moment on, in the Lord. 00:44:58.57\00:45:01.58 They shall what? 00:45:01.61\00:45:03.84 They shall rest, or that they may rest from their labors, 00:45:03.87\00:45:08.64 and their works follow them. 00:45:08.67\00:45:11.19 So what happens, according to this, when a person dies? 00:45:11.22\00:45:16.70 Are his works finished? Yes, they are. 00:45:16.73\00:45:19.83 And what does he do? He rests. 00:45:19.86\00:45:22.75 So what did Jesus do on the seventh day of the week? 00:45:22.78\00:45:27.04 By the way, the whole day, because He died shortly before 00:45:27.07\00:45:33.71 sundown, and He resurrected early on the 00:45:33.74\00:45:38.23 first day of the week. 00:45:38.26\00:45:39.29 And so Jesus rested the whole Sabbath day in the seplecure 00:45:39.32\00:45:44.60 after saying, It is finished; after working for the salvation 00:45:44.63\00:45:48.71 of man. And then, of course, Jesus resurrected the first day 00:45:48.74\00:45:53.87 of the week. Go with me to 2 Corinthians 5, 2 Corinthians 5. 00:45:53.90\00:45:59.14 Do you know that redemption is recreation? 00:45:59.17\00:46:02.22 In redemption Jesus recreates. 00:46:02.25\00:46:06.79 Notice 2 Corinthians 5:17, 2 Corinthians 5:17. 00:46:06.82\00:46:14.52 Here the apostle Paul says this: 00:46:14.55\00:46:16.34 That means if someone's been redeemed by Jesus,... 00:46:22.57\00:46:24.61 Is redemption a recreation? Yes, it is. 00:46:38.07\00:46:43.64 What was the sign of redemption, or recreation 00:46:43.67\00:46:46.94 in the Old Testament? 00:46:46.97\00:46:48.08 It was the Sabbath. 00:46:48.11\00:46:49.74 What is the sign of redemption, or recreation 00:46:49.77\00:46:52.81 in the New Testament? 00:46:52.84\00:46:54.02 It is, once again, the holy Sabbath. 00:46:54.05\00:46:58.86 In other words, the New Testament gives us an additional 00:46:58.89\00:47:01.97 reason to keep the Sabbath, not only because Jesus, 00:47:02.00\00:47:05.13 at the beginning, created us, but when we fell into sin, 00:47:05.16\00:47:08.95 into disorder, into chaos, Jesus worked on the cross, 00:47:08.98\00:47:14.58 He said on the sixth day, It is finished, rested in the tomb 00:47:14.61\00:47:18.68 the seventh day, and came forth to ascend to the presence of 00:47:18.71\00:47:22.41 His Father to represent us before God. 00:47:22.44\00:47:25.03 The Sabbath, then, is not only a sign of creation, 00:47:25.06\00:47:29.16 it is also a sign of redemption. 00:47:29.19\00:47:32.73 Two reasons for keeping the Sabbath. 00:47:32.76\00:47:34.89 Do you remember the manna episode? 00:47:34.92\00:47:37.46 Let's go to that for a moment. 00:47:37.49\00:47:40.88 Do you remember that the manna that fell on the sixth day, 00:47:40.91\00:47:43.35 there was twice as much manna? 00:47:43.38\00:47:44.82 What happened to the manna when it was kept over for the 00:47:44.85\00:47:48.82 Sabbath? It did not what? It did not breed worms or stink. 00:47:48.85\00:47:53.63 Let me ask you, what usually would you use those terms for? 00:47:53.66\00:47:56.36 breed worms and stink? 00:47:56.39\00:47:57.82 You would use that for a what? 00:47:57.85\00:48:01.17 What happens to a human body when it's buried after awhile? 00:48:01.20\00:48:05.76 What happens? Does it start stinking? 00:48:05.79\00:48:08.51 Yes, it does. Does it breed worms? 00:48:08.54\00:48:11.08 Yes, maggots. Of course. 00:48:11.11\00:48:15.05 Now I want you to notice John 6:51. 00:48:15.08\00:48:18.95 It really gets interesting here. 00:48:18.98\00:48:20.87 John 6:51, Jesus is speaking, and He says this: 00:48:20.90\00:48:28.52 So what did that manna represent? Jesus. 00:48:36.80\00:48:40.22 What does the manna represent? 00:48:58.17\00:49:00.61 It represents the flesh of Jesus, sacrificed for the life 00:49:00.64\00:49:05.94 of the world. Yes or no? Absolutely! 00:49:05.97\00:49:09.43 Now go with me to Acts 2 and discover something 00:49:09.46\00:49:12.35 very interesting. 00:49:12.38\00:49:13.41 Did the body of Jesus see any corruption 00:49:13.44\00:49:18.20 as He rested in the tomb? 00:49:18.23\00:49:20.03 What would have happened to a normal body? 00:49:20.06\00:49:23.20 A normal body would have begun the process of decomposition. 00:49:23.23\00:49:28.63 But notice what David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, 00:49:28.66\00:49:33.57 says about the body of Jesus. 00:49:33.60\00:49:36.12 Acts 2:25-27, Acts 2:25-27. Here it says: 00:49:36.15\00:49:46.99 By the way, this is a prophecy from Psalm 16. 00:49:47.02\00:49:49.94 Concerning Jesus. 00:49:52.41\00:49:53.48 Excuse me, my what? 00:50:08.32\00:50:09.79 The word soul there means life. 00:50:19.89\00:50:21.79 We can't get into that right now. 00:50:21.82\00:50:23.37 Did the flesh of Jesus see corruption? Why not? 00:50:34.24\00:50:38.71 Because Jesus was the living manna. 00:50:38.74\00:50:43.06 By the way, this proves that Jesus was going to die on Friday 00:50:43.09\00:50:48.23 and He was going to rest in the tomb on Sabbath. 00:50:48.26\00:50:51.33 Some people say that Jesus was crucified on Wednesday, 00:50:51.36\00:50:54.93 and resurrected on Saturday. 00:50:54.96\00:50:56.40 It can't be, because in this story from the Old Testament, 00:50:56.43\00:51:00.09 we find very clearly that the manna that was picked up on 00:51:00.12\00:51:04.33 Friday was just as fresh on the seventh day. 00:51:04.36\00:51:07.18 Jesus, who died on Friday, His body was just as fresh 00:51:07.21\00:51:11.23 on the Sabbath in the tomb. 00:51:11.26\00:51:12.46 It did not see corruption. 00:51:12.49\00:51:14.14 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:51:14.17\00:51:16.05 This is really a Messianic prophecy about Jesus 00:51:16.08\00:51:19.33 that is found in the Old Testament. 00:51:19.36\00:51:21.73 Now we must move on over quickly. 00:51:21.76\00:51:24.54 Allow me just to mention several things, and I'll just mention 00:51:24.57\00:51:27.77 these in passing. 00:51:27.80\00:51:28.83 Matthew 24:20 tells us that the Sabbath was going to be observed 00:51:28.86\00:51:33.22 forty years after the resurrection of Christ. 00:51:33.25\00:51:35.46 Pray that your flight be not in the winter, or on the Sabbath, 00:51:35.49\00:51:39.43 Jesus said to His disciples. 00:51:39.46\00:51:41.04 In the book of Acts the Sabbath is observed very frequently. 00:51:41.07\00:51:45.40 I'll just mention these in passing, because I want to get 00:51:45.43\00:51:47.68 to the end time. You have in Acts 13:42, 44 the apostle Paul 00:51:47.71\00:51:55.32 keeping the Sabbath with Jews and Gentiles 00:51:55.35\00:51:58.34 in the city of Antioch, like I mentioned. 00:51:58.37\00:52:01.30 In Acts 16:13 you find the apostle Paul observing 00:52:01.33\00:52:05.08 the Sabbath by a riverside. 00:52:05.11\00:52:07.97 In other words, it's not even in the synagogue. 00:52:08.00\00:52:10.04 In Acts 17:2 we find the apostle Paul observing the Sabbath 00:52:10.07\00:52:15.37 in the city of Thessalonica. 00:52:15.40\00:52:18.34 In Acts 18:4 you find the apostle Paul observing the 00:52:18.37\00:52:22.72 Sabbath in the city of Corinth. 00:52:22.75\00:52:24.17 By the way, these are all Roman Gentile cities, 00:52:24.20\00:52:27.02 and yet the apostle Paul, and Peter are observing 00:52:27.05\00:52:31.85 the Holy Sabbath. 00:52:31.88\00:52:32.91 By the way, have you ever heard of the Jerusalem Council? 00:52:32.94\00:52:35.38 It was held in the year 49. 00:52:35.41\00:52:37.55 They were arguing about whether circumcision applied or not. 00:52:39.18\00:52:42.54 Listen, if the Sabbath had been done away with at this point, 00:52:42.57\00:52:47.68 you would have had a major debate, 00:52:47.71\00:52:49.93 but the Sabbath is not an issue. 00:52:49.96\00:52:52.88 The change of Sabbath to Sunday is not an issue 00:52:52.91\00:52:55.78 at the Jerusalem Council, which shows that clearly nobody came 00:52:55.81\00:52:59.68 up with the idea of changing the Sabbath to Sunday, 00:52:59.71\00:53:02.65 because they did not understand that Jesus was teaching that. 00:53:02.68\00:53:05.70 Now allow me to go very quickly to the Sabbath 00:53:05.73\00:53:08.72 at the end of time. 00:53:08.75\00:53:10.04 And I'm going to go through this quickly. 00:53:10.07\00:53:11.84 You have all of the verses. 00:53:11.87\00:53:12.93 I just want you to catch the picture. 00:53:12.96\00:53:14.54 Revelation 16:1-21 portrays seven devastating plagues 00:53:14.57\00:53:20.39 that are going to fall upon this earth; terrible plagues that are 00:53:20.42\00:53:24.12 going to reverse creation. 00:53:24.15\00:53:26.05 They're going to return the earth to the way 00:53:26.08\00:53:27.82 it was before creation. 00:53:27.85\00:53:29.41 In fact, Jeremiah 4:23 says that Jeremiah saw the earth 00:53:29.44\00:53:34.56 as it will be during the thousand years 00:53:34.59\00:53:37.20 when creation is reversed. 00:53:37.23\00:53:39.22 He says, I beheld the earth, and it was without form 00:53:39.25\00:53:44.27 and void, and I looked at the heavens and they had no light. 00:53:44.30\00:53:47.96 Is that the same condition that the earth was in 00:53:47.99\00:53:50.49 before Jesus created it? 00:53:50.52\00:53:52.09 Same three characteristics: without form, 00:53:52.12\00:53:55.66 void, and no light. 00:53:55.69\00:53:57.72 In other words, the earth is going to return to the condition 00:53:57.75\00:54:01.03 it was in before creation, during the millennium, 00:54:01.06\00:54:04.10 during the thousand years. 00:54:04.13\00:54:05.21 We have a whole study later on on the millennium, by the way. 00:54:05.24\00:54:08.66 And then after the millennium we're told in Revelation 21:1 00:54:08.69\00:54:15.09 that God, or Jesus, is going to make a new what? 00:54:15.12\00:54:19.84 He's going to make a new heaven and a new earth. 00:54:19.87\00:54:23.67 And 2 Peter 3:13 says, a new heaven and a new earth 00:54:23.70\00:54:27.43 where righteousness dwells. 00:54:27.46\00:54:29.95 Now my question is this, what day are we going to observe 00:54:29.98\00:54:35.88 when everything is re-established? 00:54:35.91\00:54:38.08 Go with me to Isaiah 66, Isaiah 66, and let's take a look 00:54:38.11\00:54:45.61 at what God's eternal plan is going to be. 00:54:45.64\00:54:48.13 Isaiah 66, and I want to read verses 22 and 23. It says: 00:54:48.16\00:54:55.74 Is this the same new heavens and new earth of Revelation? 00:54:58.30\00:55:01.08 Obviously, it's the same expression. 00:55:01.11\00:55:03.35 By the way, the new moon really is the month, because the months 00:55:18.11\00:55:21.80 were marked off by the new moon. 00:55:21.83\00:55:23.58 That's why the Spanish version says de mes a mes, 00:55:23.61\00:55:26.62 from month to month. 00:55:26.65\00:55:28.48 Why are we going to go to the holy city from month to month? 00:55:28.51\00:55:31.58 Because there's a certain tree, according to Revelation 22:2 00:55:31.61\00:55:35.87 that produces a different fruit each month. 00:55:35.90\00:55:39.25 Revelation explains what we're going to do. 00:55:39.28\00:55:41.29 We're going to eat from the tree of life. 00:55:41.33\00:55:43.31 And so it says, And it shall come to pass, that from one 00:55:43.34\00:55:46.82 new moon to another, or one month to another, 00:55:46.85\00:55:48.83 and from one Sunday to another, 00:55:48.86\00:55:50.77 Thank you. 00:55:52.83\00:55:54.00 The Jews shall come to worship before me, says the Lord. 00:55:56.95\00:56:01.89 Are you flesh? Are you part of the all here? 00:56:01.92\00:56:09.26 Are you catching what this is saying? 00:56:11.36\00:56:13.11 God's people are going to go to the city from month to month, 00:56:13.14\00:56:17.19 to eat from the tree of life, Revelations 22:2. 00:56:17.22\00:56:21.74 And they're going to go from Sabbath to Sabbath to do what? 00:56:21.77\00:56:25.25 to worship before the Lord. 00:56:25.28\00:56:28.47 And then Sabbath observance will have a triple reason: 00:56:28.51\00:56:32.21 Reason 1. Jesus made us. 00:56:32.24\00:56:35.66 Reason 2. Jesus redeemed us. 00:56:35.69\00:56:39.15 Reason 3. Jesus restored us to the way the world was 00:56:39.18\00:56:45.18 at the beginning. 00:56:45.22\00:56:46.25 And there's going to be one big difference. 00:56:46.28\00:56:48.37 At the beginning when God created, when Jesus created 00:56:48.40\00:56:52.10 everything on this earth, nobody saw anything. 00:56:52.13\00:56:56.40 But when Jesus makes a new heavens and a new earth, 00:56:56.44\00:57:00.55 all of the redeemed will be alive. 00:57:00.58\00:57:03.10 Can you imagine what it's going to be like to hear Jesus say, 00:57:03.14\00:57:06.99 Let there be light, because the planet is in darkness. 00:57:07.02\00:57:10.96 Let there be the firmament, let there be plants, 00:57:11.00\00:57:17.29 let there be birds, let there be fish. 00:57:17.33\00:57:21.48 Then we will walk by sight not by faith. 00:57:21.51\00:57:25.62
