Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:01:17.34\00:01:18.84 Father in heaven, we thank You so much for the privilege 00:01:18.87\00:01:23.45 of coming to Your house of worship. 00:01:23.48\00:01:25.55 We ask that You will pour out Your Holy Spirit upon this place 00:01:25.58\00:01:31.55 as we open Your Holy Word, particularly of the study 00:01:31.59\00:01:36.06 of the marvels from the book of Genesis. 00:01:36.09\00:01:37.79 And we thank You for hearing our prayer for we ask it in 00:01:37.83\00:01:41.23 Jesus' name, Amen. 00:01:41.26\00:01:43.77 I'd like to begin our study today by turning to that very 00:01:47.70\00:01:53.41 central and important verse, Genesis 3:15, Genesis 3:15. 00:01:53.44\00:02:03.05 This verse is central to everything that we're studying 00:02:03.08\00:02:08.49 in this seminar. Here God is speaking to the 00:02:08.52\00:02:12.83 serpent and He says this: 00:02:12.86\00:02:14.40 That is the serpent and the woman. 00:02:21.37\00:02:23.54 That is the Seed of the woman. 00:02:29.11\00:02:30.68 Now you'll notice here that the Seed of the woman, 00:02:38.05\00:02:41.29 according to this prophecy, was going to bruise the head 00:02:41.32\00:02:47.96 of the serpent. Now in our study today we're going to analyze 00:02:48.00\00:02:52.63 the story where there is a death blow given to the head. 00:02:52.67\00:02:58.14 It's not a story in the book of Genesis. 00:02:58.17\00:03:01.18 It's actually found in 1 Samuel chapter 17. 00:03:01.21\00:03:05.78 It's the famous story of David and Goliath, 00:03:05.81\00:03:11.12 which probably we've heard since we were children, 00:03:11.15\00:03:14.49 if we're adults. It's a spectacular story. 00:03:14.52\00:03:17.96 A story where David, against all odds, overcomes and defeats 00:03:17.99\00:03:24.53 this, supposedly, invincible giant. 00:03:24.57\00:03:28.67 Now I'd like to just go through this story. 00:03:28.70\00:03:32.24 I'm not going to read all of the verses, because we don't 00:03:32.27\00:03:34.88 have the time to read all of the verses. 00:03:34.91\00:03:36.75 You can read 1 Samuel 17 at your leisure. 00:03:36.78\00:03:40.22 But there are certain points in this chapter that I want to 00:03:40.25\00:03:45.19 underline, because they're important for what we're going 00:03:45.22\00:03:47.66 to talk about in the second half of our study together. 00:03:47.69\00:03:50.99 First of all, I would like to mention that when this story 00:03:51.03\00:03:55.96 takes place, Saul was the king of Israel. 00:03:56.00\00:04:00.60 However, if you read 1 Samuel 15:26 you're going to discover 00:04:00.64\00:04:08.01 that Saul, because of his disobedience, God had already 00:04:08.04\00:04:13.65 told him that he was going to be deposed as king. 00:04:13.68\00:04:17.39 In other words, Saul was no longer going to be the king 00:04:17.42\00:04:21.32 of Israel, because of his disobedience. 00:04:21.36\00:04:25.09 Now, in this context we find that because of Saul's 00:04:25.13\00:04:28.90 disobedience, you can read 1 Samuel 15 and 16, 00:04:28.93\00:04:32.83 Israel suffered one defeat after another at the hands of the 00:04:32.87\00:04:37.94 Philistines, their arch enemies. 00:04:37.97\00:04:40.08 In fact almost in every single battle that Israel was involved 00:04:40.11\00:04:44.25 with, with the Philistines, they lost ground, 00:04:44.28\00:04:48.75 and they lost battles; all because of the disobedience 00:04:48.78\00:04:54.19 of Saul. Israel, in other words, needed someone to recover 00:04:54.22\00:04:59.53 the kingship, which had been lost by Saul. 00:04:59.56\00:05:03.00 Israel needed a champion to recover that which had been 00:05:03.03\00:05:08.17 lost, because they had been defeated so severely in all 00:05:08.20\00:05:13.31 of their battles in recent times. 00:05:13.34\00:05:16.21 In this context Israel was found in a certain valley. 00:05:16.24\00:05:23.12 The Israelite armies on one side of the valley, 00:05:23.15\00:05:26.82 and the Philistine armies on the other side of the valley. 00:05:26.86\00:05:30.86 And they were preparing for battle. 00:05:30.89\00:05:33.70 And as Israel was preparing for battle, the Bible tells us that 00:05:33.73\00:05:39.23 from the army of the Philistines came forth a warrior 00:05:39.27\00:05:44.34 such as they had never seen in all of their experience. 00:05:44.37\00:05:49.38 This warrior is described in 1 Samuel 17:4-7, 00:05:49.41\00:05:56.89 1 Samuel 17:4-7. We find the following words there: 00:05:56.92\00:06:04.36 That's equivalent to almost ten feet. 00:06:17.24\00:06:20.68 Step aside Shaquille O'Neal! 00:06:20.71\00:06:22.91 You would be a midget next to this man. 00:06:22.94\00:06:27.05 Imagine, almost 10 feet tall! Verse 5: 00:06:27.08\00:06:31.12 In other words, his armor weighed 157 pounds! 00:06:49.04\00:06:54.98 There are people who don't weigh 157 pounds. 00:06:55.01\00:07:01.38 Notice what it continues saying in verse 6: 00:07:01.42\00:07:05.35 That means the tip of his spear. 00:07:15.56\00:07:17.13 By the way, 600 shekels is the equivalent of 17 pounds. 00:07:26.91\00:07:33.31 In other words, the tip of his spear weighted 17 pounds. 00:07:33.35\00:07:38.55 That's like throwing a shot put in the Olympics. 00:07:38.59\00:07:41.96 And so you have this giant, almost 10 feet tall. 00:07:41.99\00:07:46.06 His armor 157 pounds. 00:07:46.09\00:07:50.50 The tip of his spear 17 pounds. 00:07:50.53\00:07:53.44 He has a shield bearer before him, and he comes out 00:07:53.47\00:07:59.74 and he roars at Israel saying, Send someone to fight with me. 00:07:59.77\00:08:09.62 Now if you read this description, 00:08:09.65\00:08:11.69 it certainly appears like the giant Goliath was invincible. 00:08:11.72\00:08:17.29 In fact, I'd like to read a statement from one of my 00:08:17.33\00:08:21.23 favorite books on Old Testament history, the book 00:08:21.26\00:08:24.03 Patriarchs and Prophets, page 646, we find these words: 00:08:24.07\00:08:29.40 The coat, that is his armor. 00:08:29.44\00:08:32.57 And that's not surprising because you know the god of the 00:08:41.08\00:08:45.09 Philistines was Dagon, the fish god. 00:08:45.12\00:08:47.86 And so the author says: 00:08:47.89\00:08:50.73 Now as we read on in the story we discover that David arrives 00:09:02.34\00:09:07.71 at the battlefield, and the giant sees David, this is later 00:09:07.74\00:09:11.78 on in the story, and the giant can't believe what he's seeing, 00:09:11.81\00:09:15.98 because he's described, David is described, as being ruddy, 00:09:16.02\00:09:21.09 and young, and cute, and beautiful. 00:09:21.12\00:09:26.43 In other words, David had no experience in warfare. 00:09:26.46\00:09:29.76 In fact, king Saul said to David, when he was willing to 00:09:29.80\00:09:33.60 go fight the giant, he says, listen, you don't know anything 00:09:33.64\00:09:37.27 about warfare. This man has been experienced in warfare 00:09:37.31\00:09:41.18 since the days of his youth. 00:09:41.21\00:09:43.75 So not only do you have this formidable armor, but you also 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.98 have a warrior who had been involved in many battles. 00:09:48.02\00:09:51.69 Now there's something that we need to understand about this 00:09:51.72\00:09:55.09 story. This story is not really about two armies fighting 00:09:55.12\00:10:01.66 each other. The story in 1 Samuel 17 is about two 00:10:01.70\00:10:07.47 champions fighting each other. 00:10:07.50\00:10:10.27 And whichever of the champions wins the battle, 00:10:10.31\00:10:15.08 the army wins along with him. 00:10:15.11\00:10:18.38 In other words, Goliath says, Send a man to fight me. 00:10:18.41\00:10:22.45 If I defeat him you will be our slaves. 00:10:22.48\00:10:25.39 If he defeats me we will be your slaves. 00:10:25.42\00:10:28.86 In other words, the battle is not primarily a battle between 00:10:28.89\00:10:32.49 the Philistines and Israel, it is a battle between the champion 00:10:32.53\00:10:37.10 of the Philistines, and the champion of Israel. 00:10:37.13\00:10:40.04 And whichever of the champions wins, the people win 00:10:40.07\00:10:44.44 along with him. Now if you read 1 Samuel 17 you'll discover 00:10:44.47\00:10:49.68 that the armies of Israel were terrified. 00:10:49.71\00:10:52.75 In fact, I like the way the King James puts it: 00:10:52.78\00:10:55.38 They were sore afraid. 00:10:55.42\00:10:57.59 Do you like that? They were sore afraid. 00:10:58.72\00:11:01.46 That means that they were trembling. 00:11:01.49\00:11:03.86 They were shaking when this giant came out 00:11:03.89\00:11:06.90 to defy the armies of Israel. 00:11:06.93\00:11:10.47 Now in this context of the giant coming out and defying 00:11:10.50\00:11:16.14 the armies of Israel, we find in the city of Bethlehem, 00:11:16.17\00:11:21.78 a young boy whose name is David. 00:11:21.81\00:11:24.98 He's the youngest in the family. 00:11:25.01\00:11:28.15 And David's father...(I want you to notice these details because 00:11:28.18\00:11:32.95 we're going to come back to them again.) 00:11:32.99\00:11:34.56 David's father sends him to his brothers at the battlefield. 00:11:34.59\00:11:42.73 Now isn't that interesting? 00:11:42.76\00:11:46.10 The father sending his son to his brothers in the battlefield. 00:11:46.13\00:11:52.97 And when David arrives in the battlefield, how do his brothers 00:11:53.01\00:11:58.85 receive him? Have you read the story of 1 Samuel 17? 00:11:58.88\00:12:04.59 His oldest brother says to him, Oh, I know why you've come here. 00:12:04.62\00:12:09.49 You've come here to watch the battle. 00:12:09.52\00:12:12.49 Little did his brothers know and realize that David had not 00:12:12.53\00:12:19.20 come to watch the battle, but David had actually come 00:12:19.23\00:12:24.11 to deliver them in this battle by fighting the giant 00:12:24.14\00:12:28.68 of the Philistines. 00:12:28.71\00:12:29.91 In other words, he's sent by his father to the battlefield, 00:12:29.94\00:12:34.28 to his brothers, and he's totally misunderstood 00:12:34.32\00:12:38.22 by his brothers. Now, do you know who should have really 00:12:38.25\00:12:42.32 fought against this giant? 00:12:42.36\00:12:44.29 If you read the story, you'll discover that the individual who 00:12:44.33\00:12:47.96 should have fought this giant was Saul, 00:12:48.00\00:12:50.17 because Saul was the king of Israel. 00:12:50.20\00:12:53.23 He was the legitimate sovereign of Israel. 00:12:53.27\00:12:56.57 Of course, because of Saul's disobedience, he had lost 00:12:56.60\00:13:00.94 battle after battle. 00:13:00.98\00:13:02.58 He knew that he could not prevail over this giant. 00:13:02.61\00:13:06.28 And so it was necessary for someone to take the place 00:13:06.31\00:13:11.45 of Saul, who should have fought this battle, 00:13:11.49\00:13:14.06 and fight the battle in the place of the king. 00:13:14.09\00:13:18.23 And this individual who was to fight the battle that Saul lost 00:13:18.26\00:13:23.60 was none less than David. 00:13:23.63\00:13:25.40 As you read this story, you find that David was consumed 00:13:25.43\00:13:29.77 with the zeal for God. 00:13:29.80\00:13:31.24 In fact, he was indignant when the giant defied the armies of 00:13:31.27\00:13:37.38 Israel in the name of his gods. 00:13:37.41\00:13:39.38 He says, Who is this uncircumcised Philistine 00:13:39.41\00:13:42.68 that he should defy the armies of the living God? 00:13:42.72\00:13:46.02 In other words, the zeal for the cause of God consumed David. 00:13:46.05\00:13:50.99 As the story develops, Saul hears that this young 00:13:51.03\00:13:55.33 boy has said, Who is this giant that he should defy 00:13:55.36\00:13:59.67 the armies of Israel? 00:13:59.70\00:14:01.07 So Saul calls him into his tent and he says, What's this I hear 00:14:01.10\00:14:05.64 about you talking about this giant? 00:14:05.67\00:14:08.34 And David says, Oh, I'll go and I'll fight that giant. 00:14:08.38\00:14:13.18 I'll defeat that giant. 00:14:13.21\00:14:15.32 And Saul looks at him from head to toe, and he says, 00:14:15.35\00:14:18.59 You go fight the giant? 00:14:18.62\00:14:20.29 That's funny! You're just a youth. 00:14:20.32\00:14:24.29 You're not even growing whiskers yet, is the impression 00:14:25.26\00:14:28.00 you get by the expressions that are used. 00:14:28.03\00:14:30.40 David says, I will go, and I will fight with him, 00:14:30.43\00:14:33.94 and I will defeat him. 00:14:33.97\00:14:35.94 And so what does Saul do? 00:14:35.97\00:14:38.54 Saul takes his armor, his human armor, and he places his human 00:14:38.57\00:14:44.48 armor on David. And what happened when he did that? 00:14:44.51\00:14:49.52 You can imagine this boy, who had never been involved 00:14:51.62\00:14:54.12 in a war, never been involved in a battle, wearing this heavy 00:14:54.16\00:14:59.23 armor that covered his whole body. 00:14:59.26\00:15:02.03 He looks at king Saul, and he says, I can't wear this human 00:15:02.06\00:15:06.97 armor. I've never done it before. 00:15:07.00\00:15:09.94 I would lose the battle in an instant. 00:15:09.97\00:15:12.84 And so we're told in the story that David took off the human 00:15:12.87\00:15:18.71 armor, and he went to face the giant with an armor, 00:15:18.75\00:15:24.82 which is not described in the story, but which David writes 00:15:24.85\00:15:29.46 about in many of the Psalms. 00:15:29.49\00:15:31.49 Notice Psalm 18 just as an example. 00:15:31.53\00:15:34.60 Psalm 18: 2, 3, Psalm 18:2, 3. 00:15:34.63\00:15:39.60 We're going to find what the armor of David was. 00:15:39.63\00:15:43.24 And, of course, Goliath didn't see the armor. 00:15:43.27\00:15:45.07 That's why he under estimated him, we're going to find. 00:15:45.11\00:15:47.88 Psalm 18:2, 3, Psalm 18:2, 3. Here David says: 00:15:47.91\00:15:57.79 What was David's armor? 00:16:28.68\00:16:30.45 David's armor was nothing more or less than the Lord Himself 00:16:30.49\00:16:35.99 coming to the giant in the name of the Lord. 00:16:36.02\00:16:40.40 And so David takes off the human armor, knowing that it would do 00:16:40.43\00:16:45.47 no good in fighting this giant, and he puts on 00:16:45.50\00:16:48.44 his divine armor. 00:16:48.47\00:16:50.17 And then he goes down to the brook and he picks up 00:16:50.21\00:16:55.58 his formidable armor, his formidable weapons. 00:16:55.61\00:16:59.08 He picks up five stones. 00:16:59.11\00:17:02.12 Do you know that all that David had were a sling, five stones, 00:17:02.15\00:17:08.19 a shepherd's bag, and a staff? 00:17:08.22\00:17:12.79 That's the reason why the giant said, What do you think I am, 00:17:14.73\00:17:18.53 a dog that you come at me with sticks? 00:17:18.57\00:17:20.70 Because he had his staff in his hand. 00:17:20.74\00:17:23.10 Now imagine the comparison between David and Goliath. 00:17:23.14\00:17:26.31 It didn't look like David had any chance of winning. 00:17:26.34\00:17:29.31 I mean this giant was tall, covered from head to foot. 00:17:29.34\00:17:35.38 He had a shield bearer before him. he had a huge spear 00:17:35.42\00:17:38.62 He had a huge spear; 17 pounds the tip of the spear. 00:17:38.65\00:17:41.82 I mean, he was invincible. 00:17:41.86\00:17:44.39 And here comes little David: young, inexperienced in warfare, 00:17:44.43\00:17:50.00 with a sling and five stones. 00:17:50.03\00:17:52.80 Some people wonder about the five stones. 00:17:52.83\00:17:54.67 We know that the Philistines had five cities. 00:17:54.70\00:17:59.04 They were known as the pentapolis. 00:17:59.07\00:18:00.91 They're in the Gaza strip today, by the way. 00:18:00.94\00:18:03.81 And perhaps what David was symbolizing was that all of the 00:18:03.85\00:18:08.15 Philistines were going to eventually be defeated. 00:18:08.18\00:18:11.72 And that's the reason why he picked up five stones. 00:18:11.75\00:18:14.99 And so David comes to the giant to fight the battle that Saul 00:18:15.02\00:18:23.26 should have fought, that the armies of Israel should have 00:18:23.30\00:18:27.17 fought, but David now comes and he's going to fight 00:18:27.20\00:18:30.71 his battle. Now there's a few things that we need 00:18:30.74\00:18:33.68 to understand about David. 00:18:33.71\00:18:35.41 First of all 1 Samuel 17:15 tells us that David 00:18:35.44\00:18:42.55 was the model shepherd. 00:18:42.58\00:18:43.89 He was a shepherd of his father's sheep. 00:18:43.92\00:18:46.39 That's a very important detail. 00:18:46.42\00:18:48.09 He's sent by his father, but he was the shepherd 00:18:48.12\00:18:51.36 of his father's sheep. 00:18:51.39\00:18:52.59 Not only that, we find that David was willing to give his 00:18:52.63\00:18:57.70 life to protect his sheep. 00:18:57.73\00:19:00.67 When he came before Saul, Saul said, you can't fight 00:19:00.70\00:19:03.74 against this Philistine. 00:19:03.77\00:19:04.81 David says, what do you mean I can't? 00:19:04.84\00:19:06.57 He says, when I was taking care of my father's sheep, 00:19:06.61\00:19:09.04 a lion would come out of the brush, and he'd want to eat up 00:19:09.08\00:19:13.05 one of my father's sheep. 00:19:13.08\00:19:14.85 And I would go after him. 00:19:14.88\00:19:16.38 I would grab him by the jaw. 00:19:16.42\00:19:18.02 I would break his jaw, and I would deliver the lamb 00:19:18.05\00:19:21.36 from his jaws. He said, at other times a bear would come out. 00:19:21.39\00:19:26.06 And I would go after the bear, and I would fight the bear. 00:19:26.09\00:19:29.40 And I would deliver the lamb from his mouth. 00:19:29.43\00:19:31.37 And he says this uncircumcised Philistine 00:19:31.40\00:19:34.07 is going to be just like them. 00:19:34.10\00:19:35.80 So David was a very courageous shepherd. 00:19:35.84\00:19:42.31 He cared for his father's sheep. 00:19:42.34\00:19:44.98 He was sent by his father to the battlefield to fight this 00:19:45.01\00:19:49.88 giant to gain the victory. 00:19:49.92\00:19:52.05 There are other interesting things about David. 00:19:52.09\00:19:55.52 David was also, at this point, anointed to be king. 00:19:55.56\00:19:59.03 Do you know that he was anointed before he actually 00:19:59.06\00:20:03.16 fought Goliath? In other words, the first king had been deposed; 00:20:03.20\00:20:08.30 Saul, because of his disobedience. 00:20:08.34\00:20:10.71 And David now had been anointed the king of Israel, 00:20:10.74\00:20:14.28 to fight the battles of Israel. 00:20:14.31\00:20:16.78 He was the model king. 00:20:16.81\00:20:19.08 He was the model shepherd. 00:20:19.11\00:20:20.98 In fact, we find that David was born in Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:20:21.02\00:20:27.76 That's significant! 00:20:27.79\00:20:30.26 That name is significant. 00:20:30.29\00:20:31.86 He was born in Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:20:31.89\00:20:34.30 Furthermore, as you read the story in 1 Samuel 17, 00:20:34.36\00:20:38.23 you'll discover that this giant came forth, 00:20:38.27\00:20:43.44 and he defied the armies of Israel with his boasts, 00:20:43.47\00:20:47.91 and his threats for how long? 00:20:47.94\00:20:49.78 For 40 days and 40 nights. 00:20:50.81\00:20:51.88 That's interesting! 00:20:54.92\00:20:56.42 Are you starting to catch an interesting 00:20:56.45\00:20:58.92 picture in this story? 00:20:58.95\00:20:59.79 You have the father sending his son. 00:20:59.82\00:21:04.29 His son is the shepherd of his sheep. 00:21:04.33\00:21:08.73 He's the model shepherd. 00:21:08.86\00:21:10.47 He's willing to give his life for his sheep. 00:21:10.50\00:21:14.34 In fighting against this formidable enemy, 00:21:14.37\00:21:18.21 he's going to deliver his people. 00:21:18.24\00:21:20.48 And the boasts and threats of Goliath take place for 40 days. 00:21:20.51\00:21:27.02 And he was born in Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:21:27.05\00:21:31.15 Are you starting to catch an interesting picture here? 00:21:33.05\00:21:35.42 Whom does Goliath really represent? 00:21:35.46\00:21:39.39 He is the serpent of Genesis 3. 00:21:39.43\00:21:44.93 Whom does David represent? 00:21:44.97\00:21:48.47 David represents Jesus Christ. 00:21:48.50\00:21:52.24 And so for 40 days the giant would come out, and he would 00:21:52.27\00:21:55.48 defy the armies of Israel. 00:21:55.51\00:21:57.58 And we find David coming down to the bottom of the valley 00:21:59.95\00:22:03.25 with his sling, and his 5 stones, and with his staff. 00:22:03.28\00:22:09.39 And the giant looks at him, and he says, be real! 00:22:09.42\00:22:16.50 Doesn't Israel have any men who know how to fight 00:22:18.90\00:22:22.67 that Saul sends me his children? 00:22:22.70\00:22:25.14 You know, the greatest tactical mistake that an army can commit 00:22:27.38\00:22:30.98 is to underestimate the enemy. 00:22:31.01\00:22:35.02 You see, the giant felt that David was easy pickings. 00:22:38.25\00:22:42.19 He says, this is going to be a piece of cake! 00:22:42.22\00:22:45.76 Because all he sees is a young boy without any armor, 00:22:45.79\00:22:51.07 although he doesn't know what the armor really is. 00:22:51.10\00:22:53.37 David is covered from head to foot with armor, 00:22:53.40\00:22:56.27 because he's covered with the righteousness of the Lord. 00:22:56.30\00:22:58.97 So the giant sees him, and he can't believe his eyes. 00:23:00.31\00:23:03.71 And then he made his big mistake. 00:23:03.75\00:23:06.01 It says that he cursed David by his god's. 00:23:06.05\00:23:09.98 And David, of course, was totally 00:23:11.82\00:23:14.62 bent out of shape over this. 00:23:14.66\00:23:16.93 In fact the giant says, You come to me and I will give the bodies 00:23:16.96\00:23:23.47 of your armies to the birds of the air, and the beasts of the 00:23:23.50\00:23:26.67 field. And David says, you're half right. 00:23:26.70\00:23:30.61 That's what's going to happen, but it's going to happen to you, 00:23:30.64\00:23:33.27 and to your armies. 00:23:33.31\00:23:34.78 Can you imagine little David standing there? 00:23:34.81\00:23:38.95 He probably didn't come up to the giant's waist. 00:23:38.98\00:23:42.25 Because I don't think David was a super tall individual. 00:23:43.69\00:23:46.15 I mean, a person who's 6 foot tall would look kind of short 00:23:46.19\00:23:53.29 next to a 10 footer, huh? 00:23:53.33\00:23:55.10 You know, I'm 6 feet. 00:23:55.80\00:23:57.13 I would be looking at Goliath's belt buckle, probably. 00:23:57.17\00:24:02.30 And so he says, I'm going to give your bodies to the beasts 00:24:02.34\00:24:07.14 of the field, and to the birds of the air. 00:24:07.18\00:24:09.04 And David said, No way! 00:24:09.08\00:24:10.48 Now I want you to notice how David comes against the giant. 00:24:10.51\00:24:13.98 This is critical. 1 Samuel 17: 45, 1 Samuel 17:45. 00:24:14.02\00:24:20.66 This is a critically important verse for what we're going to 00:24:20.69\00:24:23.93 talk about in a few minutes. It says here: 00:24:23.96\00:24:27.00 How did David come against the giant? 00:24:47.92\00:24:50.92 He came against the giant in the name of the Lord. 00:24:50.95\00:24:55.69 Now we need to understand something about the name 00:24:55.72\00:24:59.56 in the Bible. When you use someone's name, you are really 00:24:59.59\00:25:04.40 appealing to that person's authority. 00:25:04.43\00:25:07.17 Let me give you another example from the Old Testament. 00:25:07.20\00:25:10.61 You have the story of Elisha, when the 42 children 00:25:10.64\00:25:14.01 were making fun of him. 00:25:14.04\00:25:15.08 Remember, go up thou bald head? 00:25:15.11\00:25:16.85 Do you know that it says there that Elisha turned and he 00:25:16.88\00:25:21.42 cursed them in the name of the Lord. 00:25:21.45\00:25:25.42 Was he invoking God into this now? 00:25:25.45\00:25:29.99 Did God get involved in the story when Elisha used His name? 00:25:30.03\00:25:35.23 Yes, and that's what David is doing. 00:25:35.26\00:25:37.97 By using His name, he's actually appealing to God's authority. 00:25:38.00\00:25:43.10 So he says, I come to you in the name of the Lord. 00:25:43.14\00:25:46.71 It's as if the Lord is fighting this battle. 00:25:48.14\00:25:50.85 And I want you to notice that the version of the battle is not 00:25:50.88\00:25:54.68 like the Hollywood version. 00:25:54.72\00:25:55.85 You know, where David is strategically moving backwards. 00:25:55.88\00:25:59.92 You know, from one side to the other, and backwards, you know. 00:25:59.95\00:26:02.82 No way! The story in the Bible says that he took out a stone, 00:26:02.86\00:26:07.30 and he put it in his sling, and with absolute precision 00:26:07.36\00:26:13.03 and speed, without pausing at all, he hurled the stone. 00:26:13.07\00:26:22.58 And the Bible says in 1 Samuel 17:49, listen, the stone sank 00:26:24.35\00:26:31.19 into his forehead. That's exactly the way it says. 00:26:31.22\00:26:36.16 The stone sank into his forehead, which means that the 00:26:36.19\00:26:40.60 stone stayed in his forehead. 00:26:40.63\00:26:42.43 Now who do you think guided that stone? 00:26:42.46\00:26:48.54 Lucky shot! No way! 00:26:48.57\00:26:53.84 The Lord guided that stone, because David was coming 00:26:53.88\00:26:58.35 against Goliath in God's name, or God's authority. 00:26:58.38\00:27:03.02 And the stone sank into his forehead, and Goliath plummeted 00:27:03.05\00:27:10.29 to the ground. But now, listen up, Goliath was not dead yet. 00:27:10.33\00:27:15.90 Did you know that? That the stone that sank into his 00:27:18.60\00:27:24.34 forehead did not kill him? 00:27:24.37\00:27:25.64 It gave him a death blow. 00:27:25.67\00:27:28.38 Let's go to 1 Samuel 17:51, 1 Samuel 17:51, 00:27:28.41\00:27:35.58 and you'll see what I'm saying. 00:27:35.62\00:27:36.79 It says here, in verse 51: 00:27:36.82\00:27:41.19 And what's the next couple of words? 00:27:51.67\00:27:54.70 Was he dead? No. Was he almost dead? 00:28:00.11\00:28:06.28 The death blow really did him in. 00:28:07.72\00:28:09.68 The only thing that was lacking was to what? 00:28:09.72\00:28:13.19 Was to cut off his head. 00:28:13.22\00:28:16.09 By the way, if you're going to kill a serpent, 00:28:16.12\00:28:18.93 how do you do it? 00:28:18.96\00:28:20.06 Do you run over his head? 00:28:21.63\00:28:23.30 Listen, I remember in South America sometimes I would travel 00:28:23.33\00:28:27.37 with my Dad over these jungle roads. 00:28:27.40\00:28:32.04 And a snake would come out, and my Dad would run over 00:28:32.07\00:28:34.54 the snake. And do you know what would happen? 00:28:34.58\00:28:37.58 That snake would continue going as if nothing had happened. 00:28:37.61\00:28:40.25 Because if you want to kill a snake 00:28:40.28\00:28:42.55 you have to cut off its head. 00:28:42.58\00:28:43.75 Now there's a reason why I'm emphasizing that the stone 00:28:46.29\00:28:49.42 that hit him on the forehead did not kill him at the moment. 00:28:49.46\00:28:51.76 His head had to be cut off. 00:28:51.79\00:28:54.00 Because in the symbolism that we're going to study now, 00:28:54.00\00:28:56.77 we're going to find that at the cross, Jesus gave Satan 00:28:56.80\00:29:01.04 a death blow on his head. 00:29:01.07\00:29:02.70 He bruised his head, but the devil is still alive. 00:29:02.74\00:29:06.68 But the death blow has been given. 00:29:06.81\00:29:09.31 And the scripture tells us that after the millennium 00:29:09.34\00:29:12.81 there's going to be an invitation to the birds 00:29:12.85\00:29:15.18 of the air, and the beasts of the field to have a banquet 00:29:15.22\00:29:18.69 once again. Now why did God give us this story? 00:29:18.72\00:29:23.26 Is it simply a wonderful story of a young boy who had a lot 00:29:23.29\00:29:27.23 of courage. He went and fought a huge giant, 00:29:27.30\00:29:30.20 and God gave him the victory? 00:29:30.23\00:29:31.87 Or do we have, in this story, perhaps, a prophecy of a much 00:29:31.90\00:29:38.47 greater event to take place in the future? 00:29:38.51\00:29:41.08 Well, I believe by the characteristics that I've 00:29:41.11\00:29:44.08 mentioned, that there's no doubt that this is a typological story 00:29:44.11\00:29:48.18 like other stories of the Old Testament. 00:29:48.22\00:29:49.95 It really is an illustration of the great controversy 00:29:49.98\00:29:53.32 between Christ and Satan. 00:29:53.36\00:29:55.92 Goliath represents Satan. 00:29:55.96\00:29:59.19 David represents Jesus Christ. 00:29:59.23\00:30:02.36 And the battle represents the battle in this world to deliver 00:30:02.40\00:30:07.00 human beings from bondage. 00:30:07.04\00:30:08.57 Now let me do the parallel, so that you can see the connection 00:30:08.60\00:30:12.17 between what happened in the past with Israel, 00:30:12.21\00:30:15.94 and how this story is fulfilled in Christ. 00:30:15.98\00:30:20.12 Was Adam originally created a king? 00:30:20.15\00:30:26.12 You know, you have Psalm 8: 5, 6. 00:30:27.82\00:30:30.29 I've read it so many times already in this seminar. 00:30:30.33\00:30:33.29 For you have made him a little lower than the angels. 00:30:33.33\00:30:36.30 You have crowned him with glory, and with honor, 00:30:36.33\00:30:38.80 the Bible says, speaking about Adam. 00:30:38.83\00:30:41.07 And then it says that God put everything under his feet. 00:30:41.10\00:30:44.81 In other words, the king over this realm, over this earth, 00:30:44.84\00:30:48.04 as God originally placed him, was Adam. 00:30:48.08\00:30:51.68 But what happened with Adam? 00:30:51.71\00:30:54.05 Did he disobey God? 00:30:54.08\00:30:56.72 He most certainly did disobey God. 00:30:56.75\00:30:59.89 And when he disobeyed God was he deposed from his throne? 00:30:59.92\00:31:04.29 Absolutely! That's why the devil, on the mount of 00:31:04.33\00:31:08.43 temptation could offer Jesus all of the kingdoms of the world. 00:31:08.46\00:31:13.17 He says, because they've been delivered to me, 00:31:13.20\00:31:15.34 and to who ever I wish, I give them. 00:31:15.37\00:31:18.11 So just like Saul was the king of Israel, and because of his 00:31:18.14\00:31:21.21 disobedience he was deposed; in the same way Adam was made 00:31:21.24\00:31:25.45 the king over the human race, and because of his sin 00:31:25.48\00:31:28.85 of disobedience, he was deposed from his throne. 00:31:28.88\00:31:32.22 Did all of the descendents of Adam suffer one defeat after 00:31:32.25\00:31:37.73 another in the battle against evil, 00:31:37.76\00:31:39.96 in the battle against Satan? 00:31:40.00\00:31:41.43 Did anybody remain unscathed? 00:31:41.46\00:31:44.43 No, because the book of Romans tells us that all have sinned 00:31:44.47\00:31:48.84 and come short of the glory of God. 00:31:48.87\00:31:51.54 In fact, 2 Peter 2:19 tells us that we became slaves 00:31:51.57\00:31:58.15 when we chose to serve Satan. 00:31:59.81\00:32:02.85 We became his slaves, his servants. 00:32:02.88\00:32:05.79 And so we find Adam, and all of his descendents, losing their 00:32:05.82\00:32:12.13 position of authority. 00:32:12.16\00:32:13.80 Did humanity need a champion to fight its battle? 00:32:13.83\00:32:21.57 Of course. What human being was able to defeat Satan? 00:32:21.60\00:32:25.84 Not one. There is none righteous, no not one, 00:32:25.87\00:32:30.95 according to Romans 3. 00:32:30.98\00:32:32.95 No one within the human race could defeat the devil. 00:32:32.98\00:32:36.52 He was too formidable. 00:32:36.55\00:32:39.02 In fact we're told in Hebrews 2:14, 15, 00:32:39.05\00:32:42.36 that the devil had held the human race in lifelong bondage, 00:32:42.39\00:32:47.46 like the Philistines had brought Israel into bondage. 00:32:47.50\00:32:51.77 And then, of course, Jesus Christ was born into the human 00:32:51.80\00:32:59.57 race. Have you ever stopped to think about the contrast between 00:32:59.61\00:33:04.71 Jesus and Satan? Or even the contrast between Jesus and Adam? 00:33:04.75\00:33:10.09 When Adam sinned he lived in a perfect garden. Right? 00:33:12.65\00:33:19.23 When Adam sinned he was an adult. 00:33:19.26\00:33:21.70 When Adam sinned he had a perfect body. 00:33:23.83\00:33:26.97 When Adam sinned he had a perfect mind, full of vitality. 00:33:27.00\00:33:33.48 And yet when Jesus came to this earth, he had none of those. 00:33:35.81\00:33:40.55 Jesus came to this earth to live in the realm 00:33:40.58\00:33:45.25 of Satan's dominion. 00:33:45.29\00:33:46.55 He came with a body and a mind affected by 4,000 years of sin. 00:33:46.59\00:33:52.09 He was born into this world as a baby. 00:33:52.13\00:33:56.70 And when Jesus was born, according to Revelation 12:4, 00:33:56.73\00:34:02.87 a little baby in Bethlehem, the devil was standing next to Him 00:34:02.90\00:34:07.68 to devour Him as soon as He was born. 00:34:07.71\00:34:10.51 In fact, the devil was licking his chops. 00:34:10.55\00:34:12.91 He said, listen, if I was able to defeat Adam, 00:34:12.95\00:34:15.12 in a perfect garden, with a perfect body, a perfect mind, 00:34:15.15\00:34:20.66 as an adult, this is going to be easy. 00:34:20.69\00:34:26.56 He's born in my realm, with a body and mind effected by 00:34:26.59\00:34:30.67 4,000 years of sin. This is going to be easy. 00:34:30.70\00:34:35.07 The devil actually underestimated Jesus. 00:34:35.10\00:34:39.74 Now whom was Jesus sent by to this earth? 00:34:39.77\00:34:43.95 Notice John 3:17, John 3:17. 00:34:45.38\00:34:51.02 He was sent by his Father. 00:34:51.05\00:34:53.92 It says there in John 3:17: 00:34:53.96\00:34:57.36 So here we find the Father sending His Son, 00:35:07.50\00:35:11.24 just like in the Old Testament, the father sent David 00:35:11.27\00:35:15.18 to the battlefield. 00:35:15.21\00:35:16.51 Now in whose name did Jesus go? 00:35:16.54\00:35:19.08 He came in the name of His Father; not in His own name. 00:35:21.48\00:35:25.25 Notice what we find in John 5:43, John 5:43. 00:35:25.29\00:35:30.96 We find this idea: He doesn't come in His own name; 00:35:30.99\00:35:33.19 He comes in the name of his father. 00:35:33.23\00:35:35.46 John 5:43 says this: I have come in my father's name, 00:35:35.50\00:35:45.61 and you do not receive me. 00:35:45.64\00:35:48.58 If another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 00:35:48.61\00:35:52.48 So, notice that Jesus is sent by His Father. 00:35:52.51\00:35:55.58 He doesn't come in His own name. 00:35:55.62\00:35:58.09 He comes in the name of His Father. 00:35:58.12\00:35:59.69 Was Jesus anointed to be king? 00:35:59.72\00:36:02.96 Notice the book of Luke 4. 00:36:02.99\00:36:08.30 Luke 4:16, 17, Luke 4:16, 17. 00:36:08.33\00:36:13.60 Here it speaks about the anointing of Jesus 00:36:13.64\00:36:16.47 to deliver His people. 00:36:16.50\00:36:17.91 It says there: So he came to Nazareth, 00:36:17.94\00:36:20.48 where he had been brought up. 00:36:20.51\00:36:21.84 And as his custom was, he went into the synagogue 00:36:21.88\00:36:24.71 on the Sabbath Day and stood up to read. 00:36:24.75\00:36:26.72 And he was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. 00:36:26.75\00:36:30.89 And when he had opened the book, he found the place 00:36:30.92\00:36:33.09 where it is written: 00:36:33.12\00:36:34.22 So Jesus was anointed to be king. 00:36:58.11\00:37:01.38 He was anointed to be the deliverer of Israel. 00:37:01.42\00:37:04.49 How did the brothers of Jesus receive him? 00:37:04.52\00:37:08.06 Notice John 7:5, John 7:5. 00:37:08.09\00:37:14.83 He's sent to the battlefield. 00:37:14.83\00:37:16.67 How do his brothers receive him? 00:37:16.70\00:37:18.60 We're told there in John 7:5 the treatment that he received. 00:37:18.63\00:37:24.54 It says there: For even his brothers did not believe in him. 00:37:24.57\00:37:32.48 Are you starting to see a parallel here between these two 00:37:32.51\00:37:36.69 stories? Sent by his father? 00:37:36.72\00:37:39.45 Not in his own name. 00:37:39.49\00:37:41.89 Coming to the battlefield of this world where the original 00:37:41.92\00:37:45.49 king has lost his position of authority. 00:37:45.53\00:37:48.06 Underestimated by Satan. 00:37:48.10\00:37:50.70 By the way, does the Bible present the idea of two Adams? 00:37:50.73\00:37:56.67 The first Adam, and the last Adam? 00:37:56.71\00:37:59.91 Does the last Adam undo what the first Adam did? 00:37:59.94\00:38:03.85 1 Corinthians 15:45 says that the original Adam was made 00:38:03.88\00:38:11.49 a living soul. The last Adam is made a life giving spirit. 00:38:11.52\00:38:16.22 In other words, Jesus came to take the place of Adam, 00:38:16.26\00:38:19.43 who lost his throne; just like David came to take the position 00:38:19.46\00:38:23.67 of Saul, who lost his throne. 00:38:23.70\00:38:25.70 Both were anointed. 00:38:25.73\00:38:27.74 And, by the way, do you know that the Bible says that Jesus 00:38:27.77\00:38:30.94 was of the house of David, the king of Israel? 00:38:30.97\00:38:33.88 In fact, there's some interesting, very, very, 00:38:33.91\00:38:36.51 interesting prophecies in the book of Ezekiel. 00:38:36.54\00:38:38.71 Let's go to a couple of those prophecies. 00:38:38.75\00:38:40.88 Go with me to Ezekiel 37:24, Ezekiel 37:24. 00:38:40.92\00:38:47.42 This is a very interesting prophecy, because this is being 00:38:47.46\00:38:50.63 written about 400 years after David. 00:38:50.66\00:38:54.50 In other words, by this time David is dead. 00:38:54.56\00:38:56.83 But there's a very interesting prophecy made about David. 00:38:57.37\00:39:00.97 It says here in Ezekiel 37:24, David... 00:39:01.00\00:39:08.14 Notice this: David, my servant, shall be king over them. 00:39:08.18\00:39:12.41 At this point David had been dead for hundreds of years. 00:39:12.45\00:39:16.75 And they shall all have one shepherd. 00:39:18.39\00:39:21.16 What was David going to be when he would rise again? 00:39:21.19\00:39:24.16 Shepherd. They shall also walk in my judgments and observe 00:39:24.19\00:39:32.70 my statutes and do them. 00:39:32.73\00:39:34.47 Notice also Ezekiel 34, Ezekiel 34:23, Ezekiel 34:23. 00:39:34.50\00:39:43.85 It says here, speaking about the time after the captivity. 00:39:43.88\00:39:49.32 And I, the Lord, will be their God. 00:39:49.35\00:39:53.92 And my servant, David, a prince among them. 00:39:53.96\00:40:00.03 I the Lord have spoken. 00:40:00.06\00:40:03.00 So you have David, the prince or the king? 00:40:03.03\00:40:06.10 David the shepherd, after his death, God is prophesying. 00:40:06.13\00:40:10.61 I'm going to put David as My king. 00:40:10.64\00:40:12.31 I'm going to David as My shepherd over My people, Israel. 00:40:12.34\00:40:16.44 Do you remember when Jesus had the conversation with Nathaniel, 00:40:16.48\00:40:20.72 one of His disciples? 00:40:20.75\00:40:21.92 The story is found in John 1:49, where Nathaniel says about 00:40:21.95\00:40:28.66 Jesus: You are the Christ, the king of Israel. 00:40:28.69\00:40:37.80 Who was the original king? Adam. 00:40:39.97\00:40:43.81 Who came to fight the battle that Adam lost? 00:40:43.84\00:40:48.01 The second Adam: Jesus, the king of Israel. 00:40:48.04\00:40:52.88 By the way, do you know that in Luke 1:69 it speaks about Jesus 00:40:52.91\00:40:59.09 fulfilling this prophecy of Ezekiel 34 and Ezekiel 37. 00:40:59.12\00:41:04.26 Jesus is the new David. 00:41:04.29\00:41:06.56 Not personally, but He's the new David to fulfill the role 00:41:06.59\00:41:11.83 of the David that we find in the Old Testament. 00:41:11.87\00:41:14.64 Let me ask you, was Jesus the good shepherd? 00:41:14.67\00:41:16.81 Have you ever read John 10:11-14? 00:41:18.61\00:41:23.71 Let's notice that: John 10:11-14. 00:41:23.75\00:41:29.25 Here Jesus is speaking about Himself, and He says this: 00:41:29.28\00:41:34.39 Does that sound like David? Most certainly! 00:41:41.76\00:41:44.87 By the way, David knew that he wasn't the shepherd, 00:41:45.00\00:41:47.87 because he says the Lord is My Shepherd. 00:41:47.90\00:41:49.77 So David knew that this was a typological story. 00:41:50.67\00:41:53.38 Notice verse 11, verse 12: 00:41:53.41\00:41:58.28 I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, 00:42:15.56\00:42:18.93 and am known by mine own. 00:42:18.97\00:42:22.37 And so you notice that Jesus is king of Israel. 00:42:22.40\00:42:25.74 Jesus is the good shepherd. 00:42:25.77\00:42:27.68 Where was Jesus born? 00:42:27.71\00:42:29.18 Of course, all of this is coincidence, do you think? 00:42:31.61\00:42:35.32 Where was Jesus born? 00:42:35.35\00:42:38.09 He was born not only in Bethlehem, but He was born 00:42:38.12\00:42:41.86 in the place that has the exact name: Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:42:41.89\00:42:46.49 Notice the book of Micah, Micah 5:2, Micah 5:2. 00:42:46.53\00:42:53.67 Very interesting that the exact name would be given. 00:42:53.70\00:42:57.07 Micah 5:2, It says: 00:42:57.11\00:42:59.87 How long did Jesus battle with the devil in the wilderness; 00:43:21.26\00:43:24.50 with that giant who was roaring, so to speak, against Christ? 00:43:27.64\00:43:33.24 How long did the battle last? 00:43:33.27\00:43:35.44 You know, don't you? 00:43:37.48\00:43:38.68 How long was Jesus in the wilderness being 00:43:38.71\00:43:41.38 tempted of the devil? 00:43:41.42\00:43:42.52 Forty days. It's an accident, right? 00:43:44.79\00:43:47.52 Notice Mark 1:13, Mark 1:13. 00:43:47.56\00:43:54.46 Here we're told by Mark the amount of time that Jesus 00:43:54.46\00:44:00.64 was there battling with the devil. It says: 00:44:00.67\00:44:02.57 How did Jesus attack the devil there in the wilderness 00:44:15.35\00:44:19.82 during those forty days? 00:44:19.85\00:44:21.29 Was He indecisive? 00:44:21.32\00:44:23.39 Did He say, let me see what kind of strategy I can develop 00:44:23.43\00:44:27.23 to defeat this enemy, this giant? 00:44:27.23\00:44:29.23 How did Jesus do it? 00:44:29.26\00:44:30.30 His response was what? Immediate. 00:44:30.33\00:44:35.10 Is that what David did when he fought against 00:44:35.14\00:44:37.24 Goliath the giant? 00:44:37.27\00:44:38.34 It was immediate. 00:44:38.37\00:44:39.74 In whose name did Jesus come against the devil? 00:44:39.77\00:44:43.61 The Lord rebuke you, He says to the devil. 00:44:43.65\00:44:47.82 He says, It is written. 00:44:47.85\00:44:49.38 His fight against the devil is not indecisive. 00:44:49.42\00:44:53.25 It is up front, direct, without any delay, without any pause. 00:44:53.29\00:45:00.76 Just like David when he fought Goliath. 00:45:00.80\00:45:05.37 We're told in 1 John 3:8 that Jesus came to destroy 00:45:05.40\00:45:10.74 the works of the devil. 00:45:10.77\00:45:12.77 In fact, when Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary, 00:45:12.81\00:45:16.41 the prophecy of Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled. 00:45:18.78\00:45:22.22 Satan's head was bruised. 00:45:22.25\00:45:27.96 But is the devil still alive? 00:45:27.99\00:45:30.09 Is he still wreaking havoc? 00:45:30.13\00:45:33.23 He most certainly is. 00:45:33.26\00:45:34.96 The death blow has been given, but when will this prophecy 00:45:35.00\00:45:39.93 ultimately be fulfilled? 00:45:39.97\00:45:42.07 The handwriting is on the wall for Satan. 00:45:42.10\00:45:45.14 The death blow has been given. 00:45:45.17\00:45:47.24 The only thing that is lacking is his final what? 00:45:47.28\00:45:50.48 Is his final destruction. 00:45:50.51\00:45:52.91 And when will that take place? 00:45:52.95\00:45:55.52 Go with me to Revelation 19: 17, 18, Revelation 19:17, 18. 00:45:55.55\00:46:04.59 And, by the way, we don't have time to read it, 00:46:04.63\00:46:06.76 but you can read Ezekiel 38 and 39, where you have 00:46:06.80\00:46:09.76 this scene coming from. 00:46:09.80\00:46:11.17 Actually, this takes place before the millennium, 00:46:11.20\00:46:13.60 with the followers of Satan, and it takes place after 00:46:13.64\00:46:16.87 the millennium with Satan himself. 00:46:16.91\00:46:19.14 Revelation 19:17, 18. 00:46:19.17\00:46:23.78 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a 00:46:23.81\00:46:29.68 loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst 00:46:29.72\00:46:32.55 of heaven, Come and gather together for the supper 00:46:32.59\00:46:37.59 of the great God; That you may eat the flesh of kings, 00:46:37.63\00:46:42.16 the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of 00:46:42.20\00:46:46.00 horses, and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all 00:46:46.03\00:46:49.70 people, free and slave, both small and great. 00:46:49.74\00:46:54.08 Is that scene in that little valley going to be repeated 00:46:54.11\00:46:57.75 again on a worldwide scale? 00:46:57.78\00:46:59.48 It most certainly is. 00:46:59.51\00:47:01.48 And the enemy, Satan, will be finally, and definitively 00:47:01.52\00:47:07.16 destroyed. Now I want to dwell on one aspect before we 00:47:07.19\00:47:14.73 draw this to a close. 00:47:14.76\00:47:15.80 You say, okay, fine Pastor. 00:47:15.83\00:47:18.57 There's a parallel between David, and Jesus, and Goliath, 00:47:18.60\00:47:22.27 and Satan. You know, Jesus fulfills every specification. 00:47:22.30\00:47:26.17 You know how he's sent by his father. 00:47:26.21\00:47:27.78 He's the good shepherd. 00:47:27.81\00:47:28.84 He's the king of Israel. 00:47:28.88\00:47:30.11 He takes the place of the first king, who lost his position 00:47:30.15\00:47:32.51 because of disobedience. 00:47:32.55\00:47:33.92 He was born in Bethlehem, Ephrata. 00:47:33.95\00:47:35.65 The battle lasted forty days. 00:47:35.68\00:47:37.35 All fine and dandy, but how does that effect me? 00:47:37.39\00:47:40.89 What difference does it make? 00:47:40.92\00:47:43.22 Well, the fact is folks, that the victory that David won over 00:47:43.26\00:47:49.66 Goliath, in the name of thee Lord; and the victory that Jesus 00:47:49.70\00:47:54.90 won over Satan in the name of His Father; is the same victory 00:47:54.94\00:47:59.87 that every single one of us can win as well, 00:47:59.91\00:48:03.88 in the name of the Lord. 00:48:03.91\00:48:05.18 Now allow me to amplify that just a little bit. 00:48:05.21\00:48:09.22 Go with me to 2 Corinthians 10: 3, 4, 2 Corinthians 10:3, 4. 00:48:09.25\00:48:17.73 Do we have weapons today that we need to fight the war with? 00:48:17.76\00:48:22.36 You notice we sang two war hymns? 00:48:22.40\00:48:24.17 Onward Christian Soldiers, that old classic, which we hardly 00:48:25.53\00:48:29.17 ever sing anymore. 00:48:29.20\00:48:31.01 I don't know why. Or Sound the Battle Cry. 00:48:31.04\00:48:34.21 You know, we're in a war, are we not? 00:48:34.24\00:48:36.71 Now notice 2 Corinthians 10: 3, 4. 00:48:36.75\00:48:44.45 Here we find these words: For though we walk in the flesh... 00:48:44.49\00:48:51.29 That is as human beings. 00:48:51.33\00:48:52.89 ...we do not war according to the flesh:... 00:48:52.93\00:48:56.16 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal,... 00:48:56.20\00:48:59.80 That means that they're not human. 00:48:59.83\00:49:01.80 They're not like the armor that Saul put on David. 00:49:01.84\00:49:06.64 ...but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.) 00:49:06.68\00:49:11.45 Do we have access to mighty weapons? 00:49:11.48\00:49:13.58 What do you think? According to this, Yes. 00:49:13.62\00:49:16.45 Now what is the mightiest weapon that we have today? 00:49:16.48\00:49:19.82 It's the same weapon that David had, 00:49:19.85\00:49:22.89 and that is the name of the Lord. 00:49:22.92\00:49:25.99 Do you remember in Acts 4 when John and Peter 00:49:27.76\00:49:33.67 went to the temple and they found this paralytic, 00:49:33.70\00:49:39.57 and they healed him; they restored his legs? 00:49:39.61\00:49:42.94 The religious leaders came to them and said, By whose 00:49:42.98\00:49:49.08 authority, or in whose name have you done this? 00:49:49.12\00:49:53.69 What is the name to be identified with? 00:49:53.72\00:49:56.79 The name is to be identified with the authority. 00:49:56.83\00:50:02.20 That means that when Peter and John, or any of the apostles, 00:50:02.23\00:50:05.87 invoked the name of Jesus, immediately they have the 00:50:05.90\00:50:11.54 authority of Jesus. 00:50:11.57\00:50:13.27 Can we do that today? 00:50:15.91\00:50:17.08 How about when we're tempted with smoking, or with drugs? 00:50:17.11\00:50:20.98 How about when we're tempted to lose our temper? 00:50:22.32\00:50:24.79 Is there still power? 00:50:24.82\00:50:29.22 Do you believe so? 00:50:31.19\00:50:32.23 How? In the name of Jesus! 00:50:32.26\00:50:36.67 We can rebuke the destroyer. 00:50:36.70\00:50:40.00 We can tell the devil, weren't you the one who lost at the 00:50:40.04\00:50:43.54 cross? Well, I invoke the name of the One who defeated you. 00:50:43.57\00:50:48.88 So that His victory back there becomes my victory now. 00:50:48.91\00:50:54.08 In fact, in John 14:13, 14, Jesus says, Anything that you 00:50:54.12\00:50:59.79 ask in My name, I will do it. 00:50:59.82\00:51:04.16 What does anything mean? 00:51:04.19\00:51:07.03 Now that doesn't mean that if you ask for a brand new Cadillac 00:51:07.10\00:51:10.70 He's going to give it to you. 00:51:10.73\00:51:11.77 What it means is in your spiritual battles anything 00:51:11.80\00:51:18.61 that you ask Jesus for, in His name, He will perform it. 00:51:18.64\00:51:22.84 Because you can invoke His authority. 00:51:22.88\00:51:25.58 In other words, when I was going to school, just to give you an 00:51:25.61\00:51:31.02 example, in South America when I was in primary school. 00:51:31.05\00:51:33.66 You know, the Lord never blessed me with a brother. 00:51:33.69\00:51:36.26 He blessed me with three sisters. 00:51:36.29\00:51:37.66 And, you know, sometimes some of the older kids 00:51:40.13\00:51:44.27 would come and pick on me. 00:51:44.30\00:51:45.33 I didn't have any defense against them. 00:51:45.37\00:51:48.50 But they had other kids whom they picked on 00:51:48.54\00:51:51.77 who had older brothers. 00:51:51.81\00:51:52.97 And when they picked on them, the little guy would say, 00:51:53.01\00:51:57.95 You know what? I'm too small for you. 00:51:57.98\00:52:01.25 I can't defeat you. 00:52:01.28\00:52:04.05 But if you don't leave me alone I'll tell my brother, and he'll 00:52:04.09\00:52:10.53 take care of you, because he's bigger than you are. 00:52:10.56\00:52:12.73 Do we have a brother? 00:52:12.76\00:52:15.63 Do we have a bigger brother? 00:52:15.66\00:52:17.43 So don't let yourself be intimidated by the devil, 00:52:17.47\00:52:21.04 who comes and tries to discourage you. 00:52:21.07\00:52:26.34 No! We have the name of Jesus! 00:52:26.37\00:52:29.78 And in that name of Jesus we can gain victories. 00:52:29.81\00:52:32.45 When we're tempted, at that very moment we should say, 00:52:32.48\00:52:36.92 devil, you were defeated at the cross. 00:52:36.95\00:52:40.22 I invoke the authority, in the name of Jesus, 00:52:40.26\00:52:43.46 to give me the victory. 00:52:43.49\00:52:44.59 And the Bible says that the devil must flee. 00:52:44.63\00:52:48.40 It is written that he must leave. 00:52:48.43\00:52:50.87 But we don't invoke the name of Jesus. 00:52:50.90\00:52:53.03 We don't invoke the authority of Christ. 00:52:53.07\00:52:56.81 You see, we have power of attorney. 00:52:56.84\00:53:03.51 Let me ask you, when an attorney officially represents me, 00:53:06.92\00:53:12.49 can he use my name, and it's as if I'm the person there? 00:53:12.52\00:53:16.36 Yes. In other words, when he comes before the judge 00:53:16.39\00:53:20.50 in my name, the judge doesn't say, Well, where is Steve Bohr? 00:53:20.53\00:53:24.70 The judge says, Oh, okay, you're coming representing 00:53:24.73\00:53:29.07 Steve Bohr. So he's taking my name and he has my authority. 00:53:29.10\00:53:33.14 That's the way it is with Jesus. 00:53:33.17\00:53:36.41 See, when I come before the devil, I have power of attorney. 00:53:36.44\00:53:41.42 Because I can invoke the name of Jesus, and it's as if Jesus 00:53:41.45\00:53:48.89 is there. In fact, He is there. 00:53:48.92\00:53:50.76 Not in person, but His authority is there. 00:53:50.79\00:53:54.46 Because invoking His name, I am invoking His authority. 00:53:54.46\00:53:58.37 Jesus is kind of like the great cosigner. 00:53:58.40\00:54:02.67 I remember the first time that I went to buy a stereo, 00:54:02.70\00:54:06.54 they used to call them back then. 00:54:06.57\00:54:07.61 It was a Magnavox. 00:54:07.64\00:54:09.11 Oh, have mercy, that's ancient, you say. 00:54:09.14\00:54:12.58 It was a real nice one, you know. 00:54:12.61\00:54:14.28 It had a big cabinet, you know. 00:54:14.32\00:54:18.52 The cabinet was actually more beautiful than the stereo. 00:54:18.55\00:54:21.62 But it was something like $350.00, and I kept it for 00:54:21.66\00:54:27.66 many, many years. And when I first went to the store, 00:54:27.73\00:54:30.93 you know, I told him I wanted to buy this. 00:54:30.97\00:54:34.07 He said, well, what are you going to pay with? 00:54:34.10\00:54:37.14 I said, well I want credit. 00:54:37.17\00:54:39.14 He said, okay, do you have any credit history? 00:54:39.17\00:54:42.54 I said, no, first time. 00:54:42.58\00:54:44.38 And he says, well, you know, we can't let you have this 00:54:44.41\00:54:49.52 on credit if you don't have any credit history. 00:54:49.55\00:54:51.42 I said, well, you know, if you don't have any credit history, 00:54:51.45\00:54:55.22 how do you establish a credit history? 00:54:55.26\00:54:56.76 Have you had that problem before? 00:54:56.79\00:54:58.46 I said, you know, I want to buy this stereo. 00:54:58.49\00:55:01.56 I have to start somewhere. 00:55:01.60\00:55:03.06 Why don't you just trust me? 00:55:03.10\00:55:04.53 He said, no, no, we can't do that, we can't do that. 00:55:07.70\00:55:10.57 So I said, what can I do? 00:55:10.61\00:55:11.77 He says well, there's one thing you can do. 00:55:11.81\00:55:13.61 Do you have anybody who will cosign for you? 00:55:13.64\00:55:17.55 Someone who's name has value. 00:55:17.58\00:55:19.88 He didn't say it like that, but that's what he meant. 00:55:19.91\00:55:23.25 And so I said, well, there's my father. 00:55:23.28\00:55:26.05 And I was hoping that my dad would cosign. 00:55:26.09\00:55:28.29 And so I went home and I said, Dad, you know, 00:55:28.32\00:55:31.13 they won't accept my name, because I don't have any credit 00:55:31.16\00:55:35.43 history. Would you cosign for me? 00:55:35.46\00:55:37.87 He said, Yes, I will cosign for you. 00:55:37.90\00:55:40.04 So he comes to the store, and I'm very proud because I have 00:55:40.07\00:55:43.41 my cosigner now. And I say, here, I brought my cosigner. 00:55:43.44\00:55:47.98 And they checked his history, his credit history, 00:55:48.01\00:55:50.18 and he said, Yes, this man's name counts, 00:55:50.21\00:55:54.88 because he's got a good credit history. 00:55:54.92\00:55:57.15 And so my Dad signed, and I took the stereo home. 00:55:57.19\00:56:01.89 Do you know, that's the way it works today. 00:56:01.92\00:56:04.79 Jesus is our cosigner. 00:56:04.83\00:56:07.93 Our signature is worthless. 00:56:07.96\00:56:10.07 Our facing Satan is worthless, because we have no power. 00:56:10.10\00:56:14.50 We can't say, I rebuke you. 00:56:14.54\00:56:16.64 The devil's going to say, who are you? 00:56:16.67\00:56:19.07 But if I say, when I'm tempted; it could be food, 00:56:20.24\00:56:24.38 it could be drugs, it could be alcohol, it could be cigarettes, 00:56:24.41\00:56:28.18 it could be women, or men, it could be clothing, 00:56:28.22\00:56:32.82 whatever it is. If when the devil comes to me, and he tempts 00:56:32.85\00:56:36.99 me, at that very moment I say, I have no power against you. 00:56:37.03\00:56:40.90 But He who overcame you, who defeated you, is alive and well 00:56:40.93\00:56:46.23 today, and I invoke His name. 00:56:46.27\00:56:50.37 The devil must flee. 00:56:50.41\00:56:53.24 But we don't invoke His name because we're weak, 00:56:53.27\00:56:56.01 because we don't have any willpower. 00:56:56.04\00:56:58.71 You see, the victory that Jesus won can be our victory today. 00:56:58.75\00:57:04.25 And it's only a matter of time until Jesus finishes off 00:57:04.29\00:57:10.93 the job that He started at Calvary, 00:57:10.96\00:57:14.63 because the devil is a wounded foe. 00:57:14.66\00:57:17.53 He's like a roaring lion. 00:57:17.57\00:57:19.13 He's a wounded lion. 00:57:19.17\00:57:21.34 Because he knows that his time is short. 00:57:21.37\00:57:23.30 How about if we claim the name of Jesus, 00:57:23.34\00:57:26.57 and win victory after victory? 00:57:26.61\00:57:31.01
