Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:01:17.46\00:01:18.95 Father in heaven, we thank You so much for the privilege 00:01:18.98\00:01:23.54 of coming to Your house of worship. 00:01:23.57\00:01:25.65 We ask that You will pour out Your Holy Spirit upon this place 00:01:25.68\00:01:31.64 as we open Your Holy Word, particularly of the study 00:01:31.67\00:01:36.14 of the marvels from the book of Genesis. 00:01:36.17\00:01:37.90 And we thank You for hearing our prayer for we ask it in 00:01:37.93\00:01:41.36 Jesus' name, Amen. 00:01:41.39\00:01:43.80 I'd like to begin our study today by turning to that very 00:01:47.80\00:01:53.52 central and important verse, Genesis 3:15, Genesis 3:15. 00:01:53.55\00:02:03.15 This verse is central to everything that we're studying 00:02:03.18\00:02:08.57 in this seminar. Here God is speaking to the 00:02:08.60\00:02:12.92 serpent and He says this: 00:02:12.95\00:02:14.45 That is the serpent and the woman. 00:02:21.47\00:02:23.57 That is the Seed of the woman. 00:02:29.22\00:02:30.72 Now you'll notice here that the Seed of the woman, 00:02:38.16\00:02:41.37 according to this prophecy, was going to bruise the head 00:02:41.40\00:02:48.08 of the serpent. Now in our study today we're going to analyze 00:02:48.11\00:02:52.75 the story where there is a death blow given to the head. 00:02:52.78\00:02:58.24 It's not a story in the book of Genesis. 00:02:58.27\00:03:01.28 It's actually found in 1 Samuel chapter 17. 00:03:01.31\00:03:05.89 It's the famous story of David and Goliath, 00:03:05.92\00:03:11.21 which probably we've heard since we were children, 00:03:11.24\00:03:14.59 if we're adults. It's a spectacular story. 00:03:14.62\00:03:18.06 A story where David, against all odds, overcomes and defeats 00:03:18.09\00:03:24.66 this, supposedly, invincible giant. 00:03:24.69\00:03:28.77 Now I'd like to just go through this story. 00:03:28.80\00:03:32.34 I'm not going to read all of the verses, because we don't 00:03:32.37\00:03:34.99 have the time to read all of the verses. 00:03:35.02\00:03:36.86 You can read 1 Samuel 17 at your leisure. 00:03:36.89\00:03:40.33 But there are certain points in this chapter that I want to 00:03:40.36\00:03:45.29 underline, because they're important for what we're going 00:03:45.32\00:03:47.74 to talk about in the second half of our study together. 00:03:47.77\00:03:51.09 First of all, I would like to mention that when this story 00:03:51.13\00:03:56.10 takes place, Saul was the king of Israel. 00:03:56.13\00:04:00.72 However, if you read 1 Samuel 15:26 you're going to discover 00:04:00.75\00:04:08.13 that Saul, because of his disobedience, God had already 00:04:08.16\00:04:13.74 told him that he was going to be deposed as king. 00:04:13.77\00:04:17.49 In other words, Saul was no longer going to be the king 00:04:17.52\00:04:21.41 of Israel, because of his disobedience. 00:04:21.44\00:04:25.19 Now, in this context we find that because of Saul's 00:04:25.22\00:04:29.02 disobedience, you can read 1 Samuel 15 and 16, 00:04:29.05\00:04:32.96 Israel suffered one defeat after another at the hands of the 00:04:32.99\00:04:38.05 Philistines, their arch enemies. 00:04:38.08\00:04:40.20 In fact almost in every single battle that Israel was involved 00:04:40.23\00:04:44.35 with, with the Philistines, they lost ground, 00:04:44.38\00:04:48.84 and they lost battles; all because of the disobedience 00:04:48.87\00:04:54.30 of Saul. Israel, in other words, needed someone to recover 00:04:54.33\00:04:59.63 the kingship, which had been lost by Saul. 00:04:59.66\00:05:03.11 Israel needed a champion to recover that which had been 00:05:03.14\00:05:08.30 lost, because they had been defeated so severely in all 00:05:08.33\00:05:13.42 of their battles in recent times. 00:05:13.45\00:05:16.31 In this context Israel was found in a certain valley. 00:05:16.34\00:05:23.22 The Israelite armies on one side of the valley, 00:05:23.25\00:05:26.91 and the Philistine armies on the other side of the valley. 00:05:26.94\00:05:30.94 And they were preparing for battle. 00:05:30.97\00:05:33.80 And as Israel was preparing for battle, the Bible tells us that 00:05:33.83\00:05:39.34 from the army of the Philistines came forth a warrior 00:05:39.37\00:05:44.44 such as they had never seen in all of their experience. 00:05:44.47\00:05:49.49 This warrior is described in 1 Samuel 17:4-7, 00:05:49.52\00:05:56.97 1 Samuel 17:4-7. We find the following words there: 00:05:57.00\00:06:04.37 That's equivalent to almost ten feet. 00:06:17.34\00:06:20.79 Step aside Shaquille O'Neal! 00:06:20.82\00:06:23.03 You would be a midget next to this man. 00:06:23.06\00:06:27.14 Imagine, almost 10 feet tall! Verse 5: 00:06:27.17\00:06:31.16 In other words, his armor weighed 157 pounds! 00:06:49.14\00:06:55.10 There are people who don't weigh 157 pounds. 00:06:55.13\00:07:01.50 Notice what it continues saying in verse 6: 00:07:01.53\00:07:05.39 That means the tip of his spear. 00:07:15.69\00:07:17.19 By the way, 600 shekels is the equivalent of 17 pounds. 00:07:27.02\00:07:33.42 In other words, the tip of his spear weighted 17 pounds. 00:07:33.45\00:07:38.65 That's like throwing a shot put in the Olympics. 00:07:38.68\00:07:42.06 And so you have this giant, almost 10 feet tall. 00:07:42.09\00:07:46.14 His armor 157 pounds. 00:07:46.17\00:07:50.61 The tip of his spear 17 pounds. 00:07:50.64\00:07:53.56 He has a shield bearer before him, and he comes out 00:07:53.59\00:07:59.84 and he roars at Israel saying, Send someone to fight with me. 00:07:59.87\00:08:09.73 Now if you read this description, 00:08:09.76\00:08:11.79 it certainly appears like the giant Goliath was invincible. 00:08:11.82\00:08:17.40 In fact, I'd like to read a statement from one of my 00:08:17.43\00:08:21.35 favorite books on Old Testament history, the book 00:08:21.38\00:08:24.16 Patriarchs and Prophets, page 646, we find these words: 00:08:24.19\00:08:29.50 The coat, that is his armor. 00:08:29.54\00:08:32.62 And that's not surprising because you know the god of the 00:08:41.18\00:08:45.17 Philistines was Dagon, the fish god. 00:08:45.20\00:08:47.93 And so the author says: 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.76 Now as we read on in the story we discover that David arrives 00:09:02.44\00:09:07.83 at the battlefield, and the giant sees David, this is later 00:09:07.86\00:09:11.87 on in the story, and the giant can't believe what he's seeing, 00:09:11.90\00:09:16.10 because he's described, David is described, as being ruddy, 00:09:16.13\00:09:21.20 and young, and cute, and beautiful. 00:09:21.23\00:09:26.53 In other words, David had no experience in warfare. 00:09:26.56\00:09:29.90 In fact, king Saul said to David, when he was willing to 00:09:29.93\00:09:33.71 go fight the giant, he says, listen, you don't know anything 00:09:33.74\00:09:37.39 about warfare. This man has been experienced in warfare 00:09:37.42\00:09:41.29 since the days of his youth. 00:09:41.32\00:09:43.85 So not only do you have this formidable armor, but you also 00:09:43.88\00:09:48.09 have a warrior who had been involved in many battles. 00:09:48.12\00:09:51.80 Now there's something that we need to understand about this 00:09:51.83\00:09:55.17 story. This story is not really about two armies fighting 00:09:55.20\00:10:01.79 each other. The story in 1 Samuel 17 is about two 00:10:01.82\00:10:07.58 champions fighting each other. 00:10:07.61\00:10:10.37 And whichever of the champions wins the battle, 00:10:10.40\00:10:15.19 the army wins along with him. 00:10:15.22\00:10:18.47 In other words, Goliath says, Send a man to fight me. 00:10:18.50\00:10:22.54 If I defeat him you will be our slaves. 00:10:22.57\00:10:25.47 If he defeats me we will be your slaves. 00:10:25.50\00:10:28.95 In other words, the battle is not primarily a battle between 00:10:28.98\00:10:32.60 the Philistines and Israel, it is a battle between the champion 00:10:32.63\00:10:37.21 of the Philistines, and the champion of Israel. 00:10:37.24\00:10:40.16 And whichever of the champions wins, the people win 00:10:40.19\00:10:44.55 along with him. Now if you read 1 Samuel 17 you'll discover 00:10:44.58\00:10:49.80 that the armies of Israel were terrified. 00:10:49.83\00:10:52.85 In fact, I like the way the King James puts it: 00:10:52.88\00:10:55.49 They were sore afraid. 00:10:55.52\00:10:57.61 Do you like that? They were sore afraid. 00:10:58.83\00:11:01.55 That means that they were trembling. 00:11:01.59\00:11:03.94 They were shaking when this giant came out 00:11:03.97\00:11:06.96 to defy the armies of Israel. 00:11:07.00\00:11:10.57 Now in this context of the giant coming out and defying 00:11:10.60\00:11:16.25 the armies of Israel, we find in the city of Bethlehem, 00:11:16.28\00:11:21.90 a young boy whose name is David. 00:11:21.93\00:11:25.09 He's the youngest in the family. 00:11:25.13\00:11:28.26 And David's father...(I want you to notice these details because 00:11:28.29\00:11:33.04 we're going to come back to them again.) 00:11:33.07\00:11:34.66 David's father sends him to his brothers at the battlefield. 00:11:34.69\00:11:42.85 Now isn't that interesting? 00:11:42.88\00:11:46.22 The father sending his son to his brothers in the battlefield. 00:11:46.25\00:11:53.08 And when David arrives in the battlefield, how do his brothers 00:11:53.11\00:11:58.96 receive him? Have you read the story of 1 Samuel 17? 00:11:58.99\00:12:04.70 His oldest brother says to him, Oh, I know why you've come here. 00:12:04.73\00:12:09.60 You've come here to watch the battle. 00:12:09.63\00:12:12.59 Little did his brothers know and realize that David had not 00:12:12.62\00:12:19.31 come to watch the battle, but David had actually come 00:12:19.34\00:12:24.22 to deliver them in this battle by fighting the giant 00:12:24.25\00:12:28.80 of the Philistines. 00:12:28.83\00:12:30.02 In other words, he's sent by his father to the battlefield, 00:12:30.05\00:12:34.39 to his brothers, and he's totally misunderstood 00:12:34.42\00:12:38.31 by his brothers. Now, do you know who should have really 00:12:38.34\00:12:42.43 fought against this giant? 00:12:42.46\00:12:44.38 If you read the story, you'll discover that the individual who 00:12:44.41\00:12:48.10 should have fought this giant was Saul, 00:12:48.13\00:12:50.30 because Saul was the king of Israel. 00:12:50.33\00:12:53.36 He was the legitimate sovereign of Israel. 00:12:53.39\00:12:56.68 Of course, because of Saul's disobedience, he had lost 00:12:56.71\00:13:01.04 battle after battle. 00:13:01.07\00:13:02.69 He knew that he could not prevail over this giant. 00:13:02.72\00:13:06.40 And so it was necessary for someone to take the place 00:13:06.43\00:13:11.55 of Saul, who should have fought this battle, 00:13:11.58\00:13:14.14 and fight the battle in the place of the king. 00:13:14.17\00:13:18.31 And this individual who was to fight the battle that Saul lost 00:13:18.34\00:13:23.73 was none less than David. 00:13:23.76\00:13:25.53 As you read this story, you find that David was consumed 00:13:25.56\00:13:29.90 with the zeal for God. 00:13:29.93\00:13:31.34 In fact, he was indignant when the giant defied the armies of 00:13:31.37\00:13:37.49 Israel in the name of his gods. 00:13:37.52\00:13:39.49 He says, Who is this uncircumcised Philistine 00:13:39.52\00:13:42.79 that he should defy the armies of the living God? 00:13:42.82\00:13:46.13 In other words, the zeal for the cause of God consumed David. 00:13:46.16\00:13:51.09 As the story develops, Saul hears that this young 00:13:51.12\00:13:55.45 boy has said, Who is this giant that he should defy 00:13:55.48\00:13:59.78 the armies of Israel? 00:13:59.82\00:14:01.19 So Saul calls him into his tent and he says, What's this I hear 00:14:01.22\00:14:05.75 about you talking about this giant? 00:14:05.78\00:14:08.44 And David says, Oh, I'll go and I'll fight that giant. 00:14:08.47\00:14:13.29 I'll defeat that giant. 00:14:13.32\00:14:15.43 And Saul looks at him from head to toe, and he says, 00:14:15.46\00:14:18.69 You go fight the giant? 00:14:18.72\00:14:20.40 That's funny! You're just a youth. 00:14:20.43\00:14:24.31 You're not even growing whiskers yet, is the impression 00:14:25.36\00:14:28.12 you get by the expressions that are used. 00:14:28.15\00:14:30.52 David says, I will go, and I will fight with him, 00:14:30.55\00:14:34.06 and I will defeat him. 00:14:34.09\00:14:36.04 And so what does Saul do? 00:14:36.07\00:14:38.66 Saul takes his armor, his human armor, and he places his human 00:14:38.69\00:14:44.59 armor on David. And what happened when he did that? 00:14:44.62\00:14:49.56 You can imagine this boy, who had never been involved 00:14:51.72\00:14:54.20 in a war, never been involved in a battle, wearing this heavy 00:14:54.24\00:14:59.30 armor that covered his whole body. 00:14:59.34\00:15:02.16 He looks at king Saul, and he says, I can't wear this human 00:15:02.19\00:15:07.09 armor. I've never done it before. 00:15:07.12\00:15:10.04 I would lose the battle in an instant. 00:15:10.07\00:15:12.96 And so we're told in the story that David took off the human 00:15:12.99\00:15:18.81 armor, and he went to face the giant with an armor, 00:15:18.84\00:15:24.91 which is not described in the story, but which David writes 00:15:24.94\00:15:29.55 about in many of the Psalms. 00:15:29.58\00:15:31.58 Notice Psalm 18 just as an example. 00:15:31.61\00:15:34.73 Psalm 18: 2, 3, Psalm 18:2, 3. 00:15:34.76\00:15:39.72 We're going to find what the armor of David was. 00:15:39.75\00:15:43.35 And, of course, Goliath didn't see the armor. 00:15:43.38\00:15:45.17 That's why he under estimated him, we're going to find. 00:15:45.20\00:15:48.00 Psalm 18:2, 3, Psalm 18:2, 3. Here David says: 00:15:48.03\00:15:57.80 What was David's armor? 00:16:28.79\00:16:30.54 David's armor was nothing more or less than the Lord Himself 00:16:30.57\00:16:36.07 coming to the giant in the name of the Lord. 00:16:36.10\00:16:40.47 And so David takes off the human armor, knowing that it would do 00:16:40.50\00:16:45.60 no good in fighting this giant, and he puts on 00:16:45.63\00:16:48.55 his divine armor. 00:16:48.58\00:16:50.30 And then he goes down to the brook and he picks up 00:16:50.33\00:16:55.69 his formidable armor, his formidable weapons. 00:16:55.72\00:16:59.20 He picks up five stones. 00:16:59.23\00:17:02.22 Do you know that all that David had were a sling, five stones, 00:17:02.25\00:17:08.30 a shepherd's bag, and a staff? 00:17:08.33\00:17:12.83 That's the reason why the giant said, What do you think I am, 00:17:14.84\00:17:18.65 a dog that you come at me with sticks? 00:17:18.68\00:17:20.81 Because he had his staff in his hand. 00:17:20.84\00:17:23.21 Now imagine the comparison between David and Goliath. 00:17:23.24\00:17:26.42 It didn't look like David had any chance of winning. 00:17:26.45\00:17:29.42 I mean this giant was tall, covered from head to foot. 00:17:29.45\00:17:35.49 He had a shield bearer before him. he had a huge spear 00:17:35.52\00:17:38.72 He had a huge spear; 17 pounds the tip of the spear. 00:17:38.75\00:17:41.92 I mean, he was invincible. 00:17:41.96\00:17:44.47 And here comes little David: young, inexperienced in warfare, 00:17:44.50\00:17:50.12 with a sling and five stones. 00:17:50.15\00:17:52.93 Some people wonder about the five stones. 00:17:52.96\00:17:54.80 We know that the Philistines had five cities. 00:17:54.83\00:17:59.14 They were known as the pentapolis. 00:17:59.17\00:18:01.03 They're in the Gaza strip today, by the way. 00:18:01.06\00:18:03.93 And perhaps what David was symbolizing was that all of the 00:18:03.96\00:18:08.24 Philistines were going to eventually be defeated. 00:18:08.27\00:18:11.83 And that's the reason why he picked up five stones. 00:18:11.86\00:18:15.07 And so David comes to the giant to fight the battle that Saul 00:18:15.10\00:18:23.38 should have fought, that the armies of Israel should have 00:18:23.41\00:18:27.29 fought, but David now comes and he's going to fight 00:18:27.32\00:18:30.82 his battle. Now there's a few things that we need 00:18:30.85\00:18:33.80 to understand about David. 00:18:33.83\00:18:35.53 First of all 1 Samuel 17:15 tells us that David 00:18:35.56\00:18:42.66 was the model shepherd. 00:18:42.69\00:18:43.98 He was a shepherd of his father's sheep. 00:18:44.01\00:18:46.47 That's a very important detail. 00:18:46.50\00:18:48.20 He's sent by his father, but he was the shepherd 00:18:48.23\00:18:51.44 of his father's sheep. 00:18:51.47\00:18:52.64 Not only that, we find that David was willing to give his 00:18:52.67\00:18:57.82 life to protect his sheep. 00:18:57.85\00:19:00.80 When he came before Saul, Saul said, you can't fight 00:19:00.83\00:19:03.84 against this Philistine. 00:19:03.87\00:19:04.92 David says, what do you mean I can't? 00:19:04.95\00:19:06.67 He says, when I was taking care of my father's sheep, 00:19:06.70\00:19:09.15 a lion would come out of the brush, and he'd want to eat up 00:19:09.18\00:19:13.15 one of my father's sheep. 00:19:13.18\00:19:14.94 And I would go after him. 00:19:14.97\00:19:16.50 I would grab him by the jaw. 00:19:16.53\00:19:18.13 I would break his jaw, and I would deliver the lamb 00:19:18.16\00:19:21.46 from his jaws. He said, at other times a bear would come out. 00:19:21.49\00:19:26.15 And I would go after the bear, and I would fight the bear. 00:19:26.18\00:19:29.53 And I would deliver the lamb from his mouth. 00:19:29.56\00:19:31.47 And he says this uncircumcised Philistine 00:19:31.50\00:19:34.17 is going to be just like them. 00:19:34.20\00:19:35.92 So David was a very courageous shepherd. 00:19:35.95\00:19:42.41 He cared for his father's sheep. 00:19:42.44\00:19:45.10 He was sent by his father to the battlefield to fight this 00:19:45.13\00:19:49.99 giant to gain the victory. 00:19:50.02\00:19:52.15 There are other interesting things about David. 00:19:52.18\00:19:55.61 David was also, at this point, anointed to be king. 00:19:55.64\00:19:59.12 Do you know that he was anointed before he actually 00:19:59.15\00:20:03.27 fought Goliath? In other words, the first king had been deposed; 00:20:03.30\00:20:08.42 Saul, because of his disobedience. 00:20:08.45\00:20:10.82 And David now had been anointed the king of Israel, 00:20:10.86\00:20:14.39 to fight the battles of Israel. 00:20:14.42\00:20:16.90 He was the model king. 00:20:16.93\00:20:19.09 He was the model shepherd. 00:20:19.23\00:20:21.08 In fact, we find that David was born in Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:20:21.11\00:20:27.85 That's significant! 00:20:27.88\00:20:30.34 That name is significant. 00:20:30.37\00:20:31.95 He was born in Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:20:31.98\00:20:34.42 Furthermore, as you read the story in 1 Samuel 17, 00:20:34.45\00:20:38.35 you'll discover that this giant came forth, 00:20:38.38\00:20:43.54 and he defied the armies of Israel with his boasts, 00:20:43.58\00:20:48.03 and his threats for how long? 00:20:48.06\00:20:49.83 For 40 days and 40 nights. 00:20:50.90\00:20:51.93 That's interesting! 00:20:55.02\00:20:56.52 Are you starting to catch an interesting 00:20:56.55\00:20:59.01 picture in this story? 00:20:59.04\00:21:00.07 You have the father sending his son. 00:21:00.10\00:21:04.38 His son is the shepherd of his sheep. 00:21:04.42\00:21:08.78 He's the model shepherd. 00:21:08.98\00:21:10.58 He's willing to give his life for his sheep. 00:21:10.61\00:21:14.45 In fighting against this formidable enemy, 00:21:14.48\00:21:18.32 he's going to deliver his people. 00:21:18.35\00:21:20.59 And the boasts and threats of Goliath take place for 40 days. 00:21:20.62\00:21:27.11 And he was born in Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:21:27.14\00:21:31.19 Are you starting to catch an interesting picture here? 00:21:33.14\00:21:35.52 Whom does Goliath really represent? 00:21:35.55\00:21:39.48 He is the serpent of Genesis 3. 00:21:39.51\00:21:45.04 Whom does David represent? 00:21:45.07\00:21:48.58 David represents Jesus Christ. 00:21:48.61\00:21:52.36 And so for 40 days the giant would come out, and he would 00:21:52.39\00:21:55.58 defy the armies of Israel. 00:21:55.61\00:21:57.61 And we find David coming down to the bottom of the valley 00:22:00.12\00:22:03.35 with his sling, and his 5 stones, and with his staff. 00:22:03.38\00:22:09.50 And the giant looks at him, and he says, be real! 00:22:09.53\00:22:16.54 Doesn't Israel have any men who know how to fight 00:22:19.02\00:22:22.79 that Saul sends me his children? 00:22:22.82\00:22:25.17 You know, the greatest tactical mistake that an army can commit 00:22:27.49\00:22:31.08 is to underestimate the enemy. 00:22:31.11\00:22:35.05 You see, the giant felt that David was easy pickings. 00:22:38.35\00:22:42.29 He says, this is going to be a piece of cake! 00:22:42.32\00:22:45.85 Because all he sees is a young boy without any armor, 00:22:45.88\00:22:51.20 although he doesn't know what the armor really is. 00:22:51.23\00:22:53.49 David is covered from head to foot with armor, 00:22:53.52\00:22:56.37 because he's covered with the righteousness of the Lord. 00:22:56.40\00:22:59.02 So the giant sees him, and he can't believe his eyes. 00:23:00.41\00:23:03.83 And then he made his big mistake. 00:23:03.86\00:23:06.13 It says that he cursed David by his god's. 00:23:06.16\00:23:10.02 And David, of course, was totally 00:23:11.93\00:23:14.71 bent out of shape over this. 00:23:14.74\00:23:17.01 In fact the giant says, You come to me and I will give the bodies 00:23:17.04\00:23:23.58 of your armies to the birds of the air, and the beasts of the 00:23:23.61\00:23:26.77 field. And David says, you're half right. 00:23:26.80\00:23:30.73 That's what's going to happen, but it's going to happen to you, 00:23:30.76\00:23:33.39 and to your armies. 00:23:33.42\00:23:34.87 Can you imagine little David standing there? 00:23:34.90\00:23:39.04 He probably didn't come up to the giant's waist. 00:23:39.07\00:23:42.29 Because I don't think David was a super tall individual. 00:23:43.78\00:23:46.25 I mean, a person who's 6 foot tall would look kind of short 00:23:46.28\00:23:53.38 next to a 10 footer, huh? 00:23:53.41\00:23:55.15 You know, I'm 6 feet. 00:23:55.93\00:23:57.25 I would be looking at Goliath's belt buckle, probably. 00:23:57.28\00:24:02.43 And so he says, I'm going to give your bodies to the beasts 00:24:02.46\00:24:07.25 of the field, and to the birds of the air. 00:24:07.28\00:24:09.15 And David said, No way! 00:24:09.18\00:24:10.59 Now I want you to notice how David comes against the giant. 00:24:10.62\00:24:14.09 This is critical. 1 Samuel 17: 45, 1 Samuel 17:45. 00:24:14.12\00:24:20.76 This is a critically important verse for what we're going to 00:24:20.79\00:24:24.02 talk about in a few minutes. It says here: 00:24:24.05\00:24:27.00 How did David come against the giant? 00:24:48.03\00:24:51.02 He came against the giant in the name of the Lord. 00:24:51.05\00:24:55.79 Now we need to understand something about the name 00:24:55.82\00:24:59.65 in the Bible. When you use someone's name, you are really 00:24:59.68\00:25:04.51 appealing to that person's authority. 00:25:04.54\00:25:07.27 Let me give you another example from the Old Testament. 00:25:07.30\00:25:10.72 You have the story of Elisha, when the 42 children 00:25:10.75\00:25:14.12 were making fun of him. 00:25:14.15\00:25:15.18 Remember, go up thou bald head? 00:25:15.21\00:25:16.95 Do you know that it says there that Elisha turned and he 00:25:16.98\00:25:21.52 cursed them in the name of the Lord. 00:25:21.55\00:25:25.51 Was he invoking God into this now? 00:25:25.54\00:25:30.10 Did God get involved in the story when Elisha used His name? 00:25:30.13\00:25:35.34 Yes, and that's what David is doing. 00:25:35.37\00:25:38.08 By using His name, he's actually appealing to God's authority. 00:25:38.11\00:25:43.23 So he says, I come to you in the name of the Lord. 00:25:43.26\00:25:46.74 It's as if the Lord is fighting this battle. 00:25:48.26\00:25:50.94 And I want you to notice that the version of the battle is not 00:25:50.97\00:25:54.79 like the Hollywood version. 00:25:54.82\00:25:55.85 You know, where David is strategically moving backwards. 00:25:55.88\00:26:00.10 You know, from one side to the other, and backwards, you know. 00:26:00.13\00:26:02.91 No way! The story in the Bible says that he took out a stone, 00:26:02.94\00:26:07.43 and he put it in his sling, and with absolute precision 00:26:07.46\00:26:13.14 and speed, without pausing at all, he hurled the stone. 00:26:13.17\00:26:22.60 And the Bible says in 1 Samuel 17:49, listen, the stone sank 00:26:24.45\00:26:31.27 into his forehead. That's exactly the way it says. 00:26:31.30\00:26:36.24 The stone sank into his forehead, which means that the 00:26:36.27\00:26:40.67 stone stayed in his forehead. 00:26:40.70\00:26:42.54 Now who do you think guided that stone? 00:26:42.57\00:26:48.65 Lucky shot! No way! 00:26:48.68\00:26:53.94 The Lord guided that stone, because David was coming 00:26:53.97\00:26:58.46 against Goliath in God's name, or God's authority. 00:26:58.49\00:27:03.11 And the stone sank into his forehead, and Goliath plummeted 00:27:03.14\00:27:10.39 to the ground. But now, listen up, Goliath was not dead yet. 00:27:10.42\00:27:15.95 Did you know that? That the stone that sank into his 00:27:18.72\00:27:24.45 forehead did not kill him? 00:27:24.48\00:27:25.76 It gave him a death blow. 00:27:25.79\00:27:28.50 Let's go to 1 Samuel 17:51, 1 Samuel 17:51, 00:27:28.53\00:27:35.69 and you'll see what I'm saying. 00:27:35.72\00:27:36.88 It says here, in verse 51: 00:27:36.91\00:27:41.20 And what's the next couple of words? 00:27:51.79\00:27:54.74 Was he dead? No. Was he almost dead? 00:28:00.21\00:28:06.31 The death blow really did him in. 00:28:07.83\00:28:09.77 The only thing that was lacking was to what? 00:28:09.80\00:28:13.27 Was to cut off his head. 00:28:13.30\00:28:16.20 By the way, if you're going to kill a serpent, 00:28:16.23\00:28:19.01 how do you do it? 00:28:19.04\00:28:20.07 Do you run over his head? 00:28:21.75\00:28:23.41 Listen, I remember in South America sometimes I would travel 00:28:23.44\00:28:27.50 with my Dad over these jungle roads. 00:28:27.53\00:28:32.15 And a snake would come out, and my Dad would run over 00:28:32.18\00:28:34.66 the snake. And do you know what would happen? 00:28:34.69\00:28:37.67 That snake would continue going as if nothing had happened. 00:28:37.70\00:28:40.34 Because if you want to kill a snake 00:28:40.37\00:28:42.65 you have to cut off its head. 00:28:42.68\00:28:43.77 Now there's a reason why I'm emphasizing that the stone 00:28:46.37\00:28:49.51 that hit him on the forehead did not kill him at the moment. 00:28:49.54\00:28:51.84 His head had to be cut off. 00:28:51.87\00:28:54.10 Because in the symbolism that we're going to study now, 00:28:54.13\00:28:56.89 we're going to find that at the cross, Jesus gave Satan 00:28:56.92\00:29:01.15 a death blow on his head. 00:29:01.18\00:29:02.82 He bruised his head, but the devil is still alive. 00:29:02.85\00:29:06.71 But the death blow has been given. 00:29:06.91\00:29:09.43 And the scripture tells us that after the millennium 00:29:09.46\00:29:12.92 there's going to be an invitation to the birds 00:29:12.95\00:29:15.30 of the air, and the beasts of the field to have a banquet 00:29:15.33\00:29:18.79 once again. Now why did God give us this story? 00:29:18.82\00:29:23.36 Is it simply a wonderful story of a young boy who had a lot 00:29:23.39\00:29:27.36 of courage. He went and fought a huge giant, 00:29:27.39\00:29:30.32 and God gave him the victory? 00:29:30.35\00:29:31.97 Or do we have, in this story, perhaps, a prophecy of a much 00:29:32.00\00:29:38.57 greater event to take place in the future? 00:29:38.60\00:29:41.20 Well, I believe by the characteristics that I've 00:29:41.23\00:29:44.20 mentioned, that there's no doubt that this is a typological story 00:29:44.23\00:29:48.28 like other stories of the Old Testament. 00:29:48.31\00:29:50.04 It really is an illustration of the great controversy 00:29:50.07\00:29:53.43 between Christ and Satan. 00:29:53.46\00:29:56.03 Goliath represents Satan. 00:29:56.06\00:29:59.27 David represents Jesus Christ. 00:29:59.30\00:30:02.49 And the battle represents the battle in this world to deliver 00:30:02.52\00:30:07.11 human beings from bondage. 00:30:07.14\00:30:08.69 Now let me do the parallel, so that you can see the connection 00:30:08.72\00:30:12.27 between what happened in the past with Israel, 00:30:12.30\00:30:16.06 and how this story is fulfilled in Christ. 00:30:16.09\00:30:20.22 Was Adam originally created a king? 00:30:20.25\00:30:26.15 You know, you have Psalm 8: 5, 6. 00:30:27.91\00:30:30.38 I've read it so many times already in this seminar. 00:30:30.41\00:30:33.39 For you have made him a little lower than the angels. 00:30:33.42\00:30:36.43 You have crowned him with glory, and with honor, 00:30:36.46\00:30:38.91 the Bible says, speaking about Adam. 00:30:38.94\00:30:41.17 And then it says that God put everything under his feet. 00:30:41.20\00:30:44.91 In other words, the king over this realm, over this earth, 00:30:44.94\00:30:48.15 as God originally placed him, was Adam. 00:30:48.18\00:30:51.80 But what happened with Adam? 00:30:51.83\00:30:54.14 Did he disobey God? 00:30:54.17\00:30:56.81 He most certainly did disobey God. 00:30:56.84\00:30:59.97 And when he disobeyed God was he deposed from his throne? 00:31:00.00\00:31:04.38 Absolutely! That's why the devil, on the mount of 00:31:04.41\00:31:08.55 temptation could offer Jesus all of the kingdoms of the world. 00:31:08.58\00:31:13.29 He says, because they've been delivered to me, 00:31:13.32\00:31:15.44 and to who ever I wish, I give them. 00:31:15.47\00:31:18.23 So just like Saul was the king of Israel, and because of his 00:31:18.26\00:31:21.31 disobedience he was deposed; in the same way Adam was made 00:31:21.34\00:31:25.56 the king over the human race, and because of his sin 00:31:25.59\00:31:28.95 of disobedience, he was deposed from his throne. 00:31:28.98\00:31:32.33 Did all of the descendents of Adam suffer one defeat after 00:31:32.36\00:31:37.81 another in the battle against evil, 00:31:37.84\00:31:40.04 in the battle against Satan? 00:31:40.07\00:31:41.54 Did anybody remain unscathed? 00:31:41.57\00:31:44.55 No, because the book of Romans tells us that all have sinned 00:31:44.58\00:31:48.95 and come short of the glory of God. 00:31:48.98\00:31:51.64 In fact, 2 Peter 2:19 tells us that we became slaves 00:31:51.67\00:31:58.17 when we chose to serve Satan. 00:31:59.92\00:32:02.96 We became his slaves, his servants. 00:32:02.99\00:32:05.88 And so we find Adam, and all of his descendents, losing their 00:32:05.91\00:32:12.23 position of authority. 00:32:12.26\00:32:13.89 Did humanity need a champion to fight its battle? 00:32:13.92\00:32:21.70 Of course. What human being was able to defeat Satan? 00:32:21.73\00:32:25.96 Not one. There is none righteous, no not one, 00:32:25.99\00:32:31.06 according to Romans 3. 00:32:31.09\00:32:33.05 No one within the human race could defeat the devil. 00:32:33.08\00:32:36.61 He was too formidable. 00:32:36.64\00:32:39.11 In fact we're told in Hebrews 2:14, 15, 00:32:39.14\00:32:42.44 that the devil had held the human race in lifelong bondage, 00:32:42.47\00:32:47.55 like the Philistines had brought Israel into bondage. 00:32:47.58\00:32:51.87 And then, of course, Jesus Christ was born into the human 00:32:51.90\00:32:59.69 race. Have you ever stopped to think about the contrast between 00:32:59.72\00:33:04.81 Jesus and Satan? Or even the contrast between Jesus and Adam? 00:33:04.84\00:33:10.10 When Adam sinned he lived in a perfect garden. Right? 00:33:12.74\00:33:19.33 When Adam sinned he was an adult. 00:33:19.36\00:33:21.74 When Adam sinned he had a perfect body. 00:33:23.95\00:33:27.08 When Adam sinned he had a perfect mind, full of vitality. 00:33:27.11\00:33:33.53 And yet when Jesus came to this earth, he had none of those. 00:33:35.91\00:33:40.65 Jesus came to this earth to live in the realm 00:33:40.68\00:33:45.36 of Satan's dominion. 00:33:45.39\00:33:46.79 He came with a body and a mind affected by 4,000 years of sin. 00:33:46.82\00:33:52.17 He was born into this world as a baby. 00:33:52.20\00:33:56.81 And when Jesus was born, according to Revelation 12:4, 00:33:56.84\00:34:02.97 a little baby in Bethlehem, the devil was standing next to Him 00:34:03.00\00:34:07.77 to devour Him as soon as He was born. 00:34:07.80\00:34:10.62 In fact, the devil was licking his chops. 00:34:10.65\00:34:13.02 He said, listen, if I was able to defeat Adam, 00:34:13.05\00:34:15.21 in a perfect garden, with a perfect body, a perfect mind, 00:34:15.24\00:34:20.74 as an adult, this is going to be easy. 00:34:20.77\00:34:26.64 He's born in my realm, with a body and mind effected by 00:34:26.67\00:34:30.80 4,000 years of sin. This is going to be easy. 00:34:30.83\00:34:35.17 The devil actually underestimated Jesus. 00:34:35.20\00:34:39.84 Now whom was Jesus sent by to this earth? 00:34:39.87\00:34:43.98 Notice John 3:17, John 3:17. 00:34:45.47\00:34:51.13 He was sent by his Father. 00:34:51.16\00:34:54.02 It says there in John 3:17: 00:34:54.05\00:34:57.38 So here we find the Father sending His Son, 00:35:07.62\00:35:11.36 just like in the Old Testament, the father sent David 00:35:11.39\00:35:15.30 to the battlefield. 00:35:15.33\00:35:16.61 Now in whose name did Jesus go? 00:35:16.64\00:35:19.13 He came in the name of His Father; not in His own name. 00:35:21.58\00:35:25.33 Notice what we find in John 5:43, John 5:43. 00:35:25.37\00:35:31.06 We find this idea: He doesn't come in His own name; 00:35:31.09\00:35:33.30 He comes in the name of his father. 00:35:33.33\00:35:35.58 John 5:43 says this: I have come in my father's name, 00:35:35.61\00:35:45.71 and you do not receive me. 00:35:45.74\00:35:48.69 If another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 00:35:48.72\00:35:52.60 So, notice that Jesus is sent by His Father. 00:35:52.63\00:35:55.67 He doesn't come in His own name. 00:35:55.70\00:35:58.17 He comes in the name of His Father. 00:35:58.20\00:35:59.79 Was Jesus anointed to be king? 00:35:59.82\00:36:03.05 Notice the book of Luke 4. 00:36:03.08\00:36:08.41 Luke 4:16, 17, Luke 4:16, 17. 00:36:08.45\00:36:13.71 Here it speaks about the anointing of Jesus 00:36:13.75\00:36:16.57 to deliver His people. 00:36:16.61\00:36:18.01 It says there: So he came to Nazareth, 00:36:18.04\00:36:20.58 where he had been brought up. 00:36:20.61\00:36:21.95 And as his custom was, he went into the synagogue 00:36:21.98\00:36:24.83 on the Sabbath Day and stood up to read. 00:36:24.86\00:36:26.81 And he was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. 00:36:26.84\00:36:30.98 And when he had opened the book, he found the place 00:36:31.01\00:36:33.19 where it is written: 00:36:33.22\00:36:34.25 So Jesus was anointed to be king. 00:36:58.23\00:37:01.48 He was anointed to be the deliverer of Israel. 00:37:01.51\00:37:04.58 How did the brothers of Jesus receive him? 00:37:04.61\00:37:08.16 Notice John 7:5, John 7:5. 00:37:08.19\00:37:14.93 He's sent to the battlefield. 00:37:14.96\00:37:16.78 How do his brothers receive him? 00:37:16.81\00:37:18.72 We're told there in John 7:5 the treatment that he received. 00:37:18.75\00:37:24.64 It says there: For even his brothers did not believe in him. 00:37:24.67\00:37:32.60 Are you starting to see a parallel here between these two 00:37:32.63\00:37:36.78 stories? Sent by his father? 00:37:36.81\00:37:39.54 Not in his own name. 00:37:39.57\00:37:41.99 Coming to the battlefield of this world where the original 00:37:42.02\00:37:45.57 king has lost his position of authority. 00:37:45.60\00:37:48.20 Underestimated by Satan. 00:37:48.23\00:37:50.82 By the way, does the Bible present the idea of two Adams? 00:37:50.85\00:37:56.77 The first Adam, and the last Adam? 00:37:56.80\00:38:00.08 Does the last Adam undo what the first Adam did? 00:38:00.11\00:38:03.94 1 Corinthians 15:45 says that the original Adam was made 00:38:03.97\00:38:11.58 a living soul. The last Adam is made a life giving spirit. 00:38:11.61\00:38:16.33 In other words, Jesus came to take the place of Adam, 00:38:16.36\00:38:19.51 who lost his throne; just like David came to take the position 00:38:19.55\00:38:23.79 of Saul, who lost his throne. 00:38:23.82\00:38:25.82 Both were anointed. 00:38:25.86\00:38:27.86 And, by the way, do you know that the Bible says that Jesus 00:38:27.89\00:38:31.05 was of the house of David, the king of Israel? 00:38:31.08\00:38:33.99 In fact, there's some interesting, very, very, 00:38:34.02\00:38:36.61 interesting prophecies in the book of Ezekiel. 00:38:36.64\00:38:38.83 Let's go to a couple of those prophecies. 00:38:38.86\00:38:41.00 Go with me to Ezekiel 37:24, Ezekiel 37:24. 00:38:41.03\00:38:47.51 This is a very interesting prophecy, because this is being 00:38:47.54\00:38:50.73 written about 400 years after David. 00:38:50.76\00:38:54.62 In other words, by this time David is dead. 00:38:54.65\00:38:56.89 But there's a very interesting prophecy made about David. 00:38:57.48\00:39:01.07 It says here in Ezekiel 37:24, David... 00:39:01.10\00:39:08.26 Notice this: David, my servant, shall be king over them. 00:39:08.29\00:39:12.53 At this point David had been dead for hundreds of years. 00:39:12.56\00:39:16.77 And they shall all have one shepherd. 00:39:18.48\00:39:21.26 What was David going to be when he would rise again? 00:39:21.29\00:39:24.26 Shepherd. They shall also walk in my judgments and observe 00:39:24.29\00:39:32.82 my statutes and do them. 00:39:32.85\00:39:34.60 Notice also Ezekiel 34, Ezekiel 34:23, Ezekiel 34:23. 00:39:34.63\00:39:43.95 It says here, speaking about the time after the captivity. 00:39:43.98\00:39:49.42 And I, the Lord, will be their God. 00:39:49.45\00:39:54.01 And my servant, David, a prince among them. 00:39:54.04\00:40:00.12 I the Lord have spoken. 00:40:00.15\00:40:03.13 So you have David, the prince or the king? 00:40:03.16\00:40:06.23 David the shepherd, after his death, God is prophesying. 00:40:06.26\00:40:10.72 I'm going to put David as My king. 00:40:10.75\00:40:12.43 I'm going to David as My shepherd over My people, Israel. 00:40:12.46\00:40:16.55 Do you remember when Jesus had the conversation with Nathaniel, 00:40:16.58\00:40:20.81 one of His disciples? 00:40:20.84\00:40:22.03 The story is found in John 1:49, where Nathaniel says about 00:40:22.06\00:40:28.73 Jesus: You are the Christ, the king of Israel. 00:40:28.77\00:40:37.85 Who was the original king? Adam. 00:40:40.07\00:40:43.91 Who came to fight the battle that Adam lost? 00:40:43.95\00:40:48.12 The second Adam: Jesus, the king of Israel. 00:40:48.15\00:40:52.98 By the way, do you know that in Luke 1:69 it speaks about Jesus 00:40:53.01\00:40:59.18 fulfilling this prophecy of Ezekiel 34 and Ezekiel 37. 00:40:59.21\00:41:04.36 Jesus is the new David. 00:41:04.39\00:41:06.66 Not personally, but He's the new David to fulfill the role 00:41:06.69\00:41:11.96 of the David that we find in the Old Testament. 00:41:11.99\00:41:14.76 Let me ask you, was Jesus the good shepherd? 00:41:14.79\00:41:16.84 Have you ever read John 10:11-14? 00:41:18.72\00:41:23.83 Let's notice that: John 10:11-14. 00:41:23.86\00:41:29.34 Here Jesus is speaking about Himself, and He says this: 00:41:29.37\00:41:34.41 Does that sound like David? Most certainly! 00:41:41.87\00:41:44.90 By the way, David knew that he wasn't the shepherd, 00:41:45.10\00:41:48.00 because he says the Lord is My Shepherd. 00:41:48.03\00:41:49.80 So David knew that this was a typological story. 00:41:50.79\00:41:53.48 Notice verse 11, verse 12: 00:41:53.51\00:41:58.33 I am the good shepherd, and I know my sheep, 00:42:15.67\00:42:19.05 and am known by mine own. 00:42:19.08\00:42:22.47 And so you notice that Jesus is king of Israel. 00:42:22.51\00:42:25.85 Jesus is the good shepherd. 00:42:25.88\00:42:27.80 Where was Jesus born? 00:42:27.83\00:42:29.23 Of course, all of this is coincidence, do you think? 00:42:31.70\00:42:35.41 Where was Jesus born? 00:42:35.44\00:42:38.18 He was born not only in Bethlehem, but He was born 00:42:38.21\00:42:41.94 in the place that has the exact name: Bethlehem Ephrata. 00:42:41.97\00:42:46.59 Notice the book of Micah, Micah 5:2, Micah 5:2. 00:42:46.62\00:42:53.79 Very interesting that the exact name would be given. 00:42:53.82\00:42:57.19 Micah 5:2, It says: 00:42:57.22\00:42:59.92 How long did Jesus battle with the devil in the wilderness; 00:43:21.37\00:43:24.54 with that giant who was roaring, so to speak, against Christ? 00:43:27.76\00:43:33.34 How long did the battle last? 00:43:33.37\00:43:35.48 You know, don't you? 00:43:37.59\00:43:38.79 How long was Jesus in the wilderness being 00:43:38.82\00:43:41.48 tempted of the devil? 00:43:41.51\00:43:42.54 Forty days. It's an accident, right? 00:43:44.89\00:43:47.63 Notice Mark 1:13, Mark 1:13. 00:43:47.66\00:43:54.55 Here we're told by Mark the amount of time that Jesus 00:43:54.58\00:44:00.76 was there battling with the devil. It says: 00:44:00.79\00:44:02.63 How did Jesus attack the devil there in the wilderness 00:44:15.44\00:44:19.93 during those forty days? 00:44:19.96\00:44:21.39 Was He indecisive? 00:44:21.42\00:44:23.50 Did He say, let me see what kind of strategy I can develop 00:44:23.53\00:44:27.31 to defeat this enemy, this giant? 00:44:27.34\00:44:29.35 How did Jesus do it? 00:44:29.38\00:44:30.41 His response was what? Immediate. 00:44:30.44\00:44:35.23 Is that what David did when he fought against 00:44:35.26\00:44:37.35 Goliath the giant? 00:44:37.38\00:44:38.45 It was immediate. 00:44:38.48\00:44:39.85 In whose name did Jesus come against the devil? 00:44:39.88\00:44:43.71 The Lord rebuke you, He says to the devil. 00:44:43.74\00:44:47.93 He says, It is written. 00:44:47.96\00:44:49.50 His fight against the devil is not indecisive. 00:44:49.53\00:44:53.36 It is up front, direct, without any delay, without any pause. 00:44:53.39\00:45:00.86 Just like David when he fought Goliath. 00:45:00.89\00:45:05.48 We're told in 1 John 3:8 that Jesus came to destroy 00:45:05.51\00:45:10.86 the works of the devil. 00:45:10.89\00:45:12.90 In fact, when Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary, 00:45:12.93\00:45:16.45 the prophecy of Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled. 00:45:18.87\00:45:22.32 Satan's head was bruised. 00:45:22.35\00:45:28.05 But is the devil still alive? 00:45:28.08\00:45:30.20 Is he still wreaking havoc? 00:45:30.23\00:45:33.31 He most certainly is. 00:45:33.34\00:45:35.10 The death blow has been given, but when will this prophecy 00:45:35.13\00:45:40.06 ultimately be fulfilled? 00:45:40.09\00:45:42.19 The handwriting is on the wall for Satan. 00:45:42.22\00:45:45.25 The death blow has been given. 00:45:45.28\00:45:47.35 The only thing that is lacking is his final what? 00:45:47.38\00:45:50.60 Is his final destruction. 00:45:50.63\00:45:53.01 And when will that take place? 00:45:53.04\00:45:55.62 Go with me to Revelation 19: 17, 18, Revelation 19:17, 18. 00:45:55.65\00:46:04.68 And, by the way, we don't have time to read it, 00:46:04.71\00:46:06.84 but you can read Ezekiel 38 and 39, where you have 00:46:06.87\00:46:09.88 this scene coming from. 00:46:09.91\00:46:11.27 Actually, this takes place before the millennium, 00:46:11.30\00:46:13.71 with the followers of Satan, and it takes place after 00:46:13.74\00:46:16.97 the millennium with Satan himself. 00:46:17.00\00:46:19.24 Revelation 19:17, 18. 00:46:19.27\00:46:23.90 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a 00:46:23.93\00:46:29.80 loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst 00:46:29.83\00:46:32.65 of heaven, Come and gather together for the supper 00:46:32.68\00:46:37.70 of the great God; That you may eat the flesh of kings, 00:46:37.73\00:46:42.30 the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of 00:46:42.33\00:46:46.11 horses, and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all 00:46:46.14\00:46:49.82 people, free and slave, both small and great. 00:46:49.85\00:46:54.19 Is that scene in that little valley going to be repeated 00:46:54.22\00:46:57.86 again on a worldwide scale? 00:46:57.89\00:46:59.58 It most certainly is. 00:46:59.61\00:47:01.57 And the enemy, Satan, will be finally, and definitively 00:47:01.60\00:47:07.25 destroyed. Now I want to dwell on one aspect before we 00:47:07.28\00:47:14.86 draw this to a close. 00:47:14.89\00:47:15.92 You say, okay, fine Pastor. 00:47:15.95\00:47:18.68 There's a parallel between David, and Jesus, and Goliath, 00:47:18.71\00:47:22.39 and Satan. You know, Jesus fulfills every specification. 00:47:22.42\00:47:26.28 You know how he's sent by his father. 00:47:26.31\00:47:27.90 He's the good shepherd. 00:47:27.93\00:47:28.96 He's the king of Israel. 00:47:28.99\00:47:30.02 He takes the place of the first king, who lost his position 00:47:30.05\00:47:32.62 because of disobedience. 00:47:32.65\00:47:34.02 He was born in Bethlehem, Ephrata. 00:47:34.05\00:47:35.75 The battle lasted forty days. 00:47:35.78\00:47:37.44 All fine and dandy, but how does that effect me? 00:47:37.47\00:47:40.99 What difference does it make? 00:47:41.02\00:47:43.32 Well, the fact is folks, that the victory that David won over 00:47:43.35\00:47:49.77 Goliath, in the name of thee Lord; and the victory that Jesus 00:47:49.80\00:47:55.02 won over Satan in the name of His Father; is the same victory 00:47:55.05\00:48:00.03 that every single one of us can win as well, 00:48:00.06\00:48:03.98 in the name of the Lord. 00:48:04.01\00:48:05.29 Now allow me to amplify that just a little bit. 00:48:05.32\00:48:09.33 Go with me to 2 Corinthians 10: 3, 4, 2 Corinthians 10:3, 4. 00:48:09.36\00:48:17.81 Do we have weapons today that we need to fight the war with? 00:48:17.84\00:48:22.47 You notice we sang two war hymns? 00:48:22.50\00:48:24.23 Onward Christian Soldiers, that old classic, which we hardly 00:48:25.65\00:48:29.27 ever sing anymore. 00:48:29.30\00:48:31.12 I don't know why. Or Sound the Battle Cry. 00:48:31.15\00:48:34.32 You know, we're in a war, are we not? 00:48:34.35\00:48:36.82 Now notice 2 Corinthians 10: 3, 4. 00:48:36.85\00:48:44.54 Here we find these words: For though we walk in the flesh... 00:48:44.57\00:48:51.37 That is as human beings. 00:48:51.41\00:48:52.96 ...we do not war according to the flesh:... 00:48:53.00\00:48:56.28 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal,... 00:48:56.31\00:48:59.90 That means that they're not human. 00:48:59.94\00:49:01.92 They're not like the armor that Saul put on David. 00:49:01.95\00:49:06.74 ...but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.) 00:49:06.78\00:49:11.54 Do we have access to mighty weapons? 00:49:11.57\00:49:13.70 What do you think? According to this, Yes. 00:49:13.73\00:49:16.53 Now what is the mightiest weapon that we have today? 00:49:16.57\00:49:19.92 It's the same weapon that David had, 00:49:19.95\00:49:22.98 and that is the name of the Lord. 00:49:23.01\00:49:26.01 Do you remember in Acts 4 when John and Peter 00:49:27.89\00:49:33.78 went to the temple and they found this paralytic, 00:49:33.82\00:49:39.68 and they healed him; they restored his legs? 00:49:39.71\00:49:43.04 The religious leaders came to them and said, By whose 00:49:43.08\00:49:49.20 authority, or in whose name have you done this? 00:49:49.23\00:49:53.79 What is the name to be identified with? 00:49:53.82\00:49:56.87 The name is to be identified with the authority. 00:49:56.90\00:50:02.32 That means that when Peter and John, or any of the apostles, 00:50:02.35\00:50:06.00 invoked the name of Jesus, immediately they have the 00:50:06.03\00:50:11.66 authority of Jesus. 00:50:11.69\00:50:13.30 Can we do that today? 00:50:16.00\00:50:17.03 How about when we're tempted with smoking, or with drugs? 00:50:17.06\00:50:21.00 How about when we're tempted to lose our temper? 00:50:22.42\00:50:24.89 Is there still power? 00:50:24.92\00:50:29.24 Do you believe so? 00:50:31.28\00:50:32.31 How? In the name of Jesus! 00:50:32.34\00:50:36.78 We can rebuke the destroyer. 00:50:36.81\00:50:40.12 We can tell the devil, weren't you the one who lost at the 00:50:40.15\00:50:43.65 cross? Well, I invoke the name of the One who defeated you. 00:50:43.68\00:50:49.00 So that His victory back there becomes my victory now. 00:50:49.03\00:50:54.20 In fact, in John 14:13, 14, Jesus says, Anything that you 00:50:54.23\00:50:59.87 ask in My name, I will do it. 00:50:59.90\00:51:04.24 What does anything mean? 00:51:04.27\00:51:07.14 Now that doesn't mean that if you ask for a brand new Cadillac 00:51:07.17\00:51:10.82 He's going to give it to you. 00:51:10.85\00:51:11.88 What it means is in your spiritual battles anything 00:51:11.91\00:51:18.71 that you ask Jesus for, in His name, He will perform it. 00:51:18.74\00:51:22.96 Because you can invoke His authority. 00:51:22.99\00:51:25.68 In other words, when I was going to school, just to give you an 00:51:25.71\00:51:31.12 example, in South America when I was in primary school. 00:51:31.15\00:51:33.74 You know, the Lord never blessed me with a brother. 00:51:33.77\00:51:36.33 He blessed me with three sisters. 00:51:36.37\00:51:37.67 And, you know, sometimes some of the older kids 00:51:40.21\00:51:44.39 would come and pick on me. 00:51:44.42\00:51:45.45 I didn't have any defense against them. 00:51:45.48\00:51:48.60 But they had other kids whom they picked on 00:51:48.64\00:51:51.88 who had older brothers. 00:51:51.91\00:51:52.94 And when they picked on them, the little guy would say, 00:51:52.97\00:51:58.04 You know what? I'm too small for you. 00:51:58.07\00:52:01.36 I can't defeat you. 00:52:01.39\00:52:04.15 But if you don't leave me alone I'll tell my brother, and he'll 00:52:04.18\00:52:10.63 take care of you, because he's bigger than you are. 00:52:10.66\00:52:12.80 Do we have a brother? 00:52:12.84\00:52:15.76 Do we have a bigger brother? 00:52:15.79\00:52:17.54 So don't let yourself be intimidated by the devil, 00:52:17.57\00:52:21.16 who comes and tries to discourage you. 00:52:21.19\00:52:26.46 No! We have the name of Jesus! 00:52:26.49\00:52:29.88 And in that name of Jesus we can gain victories. 00:52:29.91\00:52:32.54 When we're tempted, at that very moment we should say, 00:52:32.57\00:52:37.01 devil, you were defeated at the cross. 00:52:37.04\00:52:40.32 I invoke the authority, in the name of Jesus, 00:52:40.35\00:52:43.55 to give me the victory. 00:52:43.58\00:52:44.69 And the Bible says that the devil must flee. 00:52:44.72\00:52:48.51 It is written that he must leave. 00:52:48.54\00:52:51.00 But we don't invoke the name of Jesus. 00:52:51.03\00:52:53.14 We don't invoke the authority of Christ. 00:52:53.17\00:52:56.93 You see, we have power of attorney. 00:52:56.96\00:53:03.54 Let me ask you, when an attorney officially represents me, 00:53:07.02\00:53:12.60 can he use my name, and it's as if I'm the person there? 00:53:12.63\00:53:16.44 Yes. In other words, when he comes before the judge 00:53:16.47\00:53:20.59 in my name, the judge doesn't say, Well, where is Steve Bohr? 00:53:20.62\00:53:24.81 The judge says, Oh, okay, you're coming representing 00:53:24.84\00:53:29.19 Steve Bohr. So he's taking my name and he has my authority. 00:53:29.22\00:53:33.24 That's the way it is with Jesus. 00:53:33.27\00:53:36.50 See, when I come before the devil, I have power of attorney. 00:53:36.54\00:53:41.52 Because I can invoke the name of Jesus, and it's as if Jesus 00:53:41.55\00:53:48.99 is there. In fact, He is there. 00:53:49.02\00:53:50.84 Not in person, but His authority is there. 00:53:50.87\00:53:54.55 Because invoking His name, I am invoking His authority. 00:53:54.58\00:53:58.48 Jesus is kind of like the great cosigner. 00:53:58.51\00:54:02.80 I remember the first time that I went to buy a stereo, 00:54:02.83\00:54:06.66 they used to call them back then. 00:54:06.69\00:54:07.72 It was a Magnavox. 00:54:07.75\00:54:09.21 Oh, have mercy, that's ancient, you say. 00:54:09.24\00:54:12.67 It was a real nice one, you know. 00:54:12.70\00:54:14.37 It had a big cabinet, you know. 00:54:14.40\00:54:18.62 The cabinet was actually more beautiful than the stereo. 00:54:18.65\00:54:21.71 But it was something like $350.00, and I kept it for 00:54:21.74\00:54:27.77 many, many years. And when I first went to the store, 00:54:27.80\00:54:31.04 you know, I told him I wanted to buy this. 00:54:31.07\00:54:34.16 He said, well, what are you going to pay with? 00:54:34.20\00:54:37.26 I said, well I want credit. 00:54:37.29\00:54:39.26 He said, okay, do you have any credit history? 00:54:39.29\00:54:42.66 I said, no, first time. 00:54:42.69\00:54:44.49 And he says, well, you know, we can't let you have this 00:54:44.52\00:54:49.61 on credit if you don't have any credit history. 00:54:49.64\00:54:51.51 I said, well, you know, if you don't have any credit history, 00:54:51.54\00:54:55.32 how do you establish a credit history? 00:54:55.35\00:54:56.85 Have you had that problem before? 00:54:56.88\00:54:58.54 I said, you know, I want to buy this stereo. 00:54:58.57\00:55:01.69 I have to start somewhere. 00:55:01.72\00:55:03.18 Why don't you just trust me? 00:55:03.21\00:55:04.59 He said, no, no, we can't do that, we can't do that. 00:55:07.81\00:55:10.67 So I said, what can I do? 00:55:10.70\00:55:11.89 He says well, there's one thing you can do. 00:55:11.92\00:55:13.71 Do you have anybody who will cosign for you? 00:55:13.74\00:55:17.64 Someone who's name has value. 00:55:17.67\00:55:19.97 He didn't say it like that, but that's what he meant. 00:55:20.00\00:55:23.35 And so I said, well, there's my father. 00:55:23.38\00:55:26.15 And I was hoping that my dad would cosign. 00:55:26.18\00:55:28.39 And so I went home and I said, Dad, you know, 00:55:28.42\00:55:31.23 they won't accept my name, because I don't have any credit 00:55:31.26\00:55:35.56 history. Would you cosign for me? 00:55:35.59\00:55:37.99 He said, Yes, I will cosign for you. 00:55:38.02\00:55:40.15 So he comes to the store, and I'm very proud because I have 00:55:40.18\00:55:43.53 my cosigner now. And I say, here, I brought my cosigner. 00:55:43.56\00:55:48.07 And they checked his history, his credit history, 00:55:48.10\00:55:50.29 and he said, Yes, this man's name counts, 00:55:50.32\00:55:55.00 because he's got a good credit history. 00:55:55.03\00:55:57.25 And so my Dad signed, and I took the stereo home. 00:55:57.28\00:56:01.98 Do you know, that's the way it works today. 00:56:02.01\00:56:04.88 Jesus is our cosigner. 00:56:04.91\00:56:08.01 Our signature is worthless. 00:56:08.04\00:56:10.18 Our facing Satan is worthless, because we have no power. 00:56:10.21\00:56:14.63 We can't say, I rebuke you. 00:56:14.66\00:56:16.76 The devil's going to say, who are you? 00:56:16.79\00:56:19.10 But if I say, when I'm tempted; it could be food, 00:56:20.36\00:56:24.47 it could be drugs, it could be alcohol, it could be cigarettes, 00:56:24.50\00:56:28.29 it could be women, or men, it could be clothing, 00:56:28.32\00:56:32.93 whatever it is. If when the devil comes to me, and he tempts 00:56:32.96\00:56:37.10 me, at that very moment I say, I have no power against you. 00:56:37.13\00:56:40.99 But He who overcame you, who defeated you, is alive and well 00:56:41.02\00:56:46.34 today, and I invoke His name. 00:56:46.37\00:56:50.47 The devil must flee. 00:56:50.50\00:56:53.35 But we don't invoke His name because we're weak, 00:56:53.38\00:56:56.13 because we don't have any willpower. 00:56:56.16\00:56:58.81 You see, the victory that Jesus won can be our victory today. 00:56:58.84\00:57:04.35 And it's only a matter of time until Jesus finishes off 00:57:04.38\00:57:11.02 the job that He started at Calvary, 00:57:11.05\00:57:14.76 because the devil is a wounded foe. 00:57:14.79\00:57:17.64 He's like a roaring lion. 00:57:17.67\00:57:19.25 He's a wounded lion. 00:57:19.28\00:57:21.46 Because he knows that his time is short. 00:57:21.49\00:57:23.41 How about if we claim the name of Jesus, 00:57:23.44\00:57:26.70 and win victory after victory? 00:57:26.73\00:57:31.04
