Let us pray. Our Father in Heaven, as we 00:01:13.10\00:01:17.74 open the book of Genesis, we ask for guidance from on High. 00:01:17.77\00:01:24.57 Show us the wondrous things from this book. 00:01:24.60\00:01:28.39 We pray this in the precious name of Jesus, 00:01:28.42\00:01:33.22 our Lord and Savior, Amen. 00:01:33.25\00:01:37.10 The book of Genesis is a book 00:01:37.13\00:01:41.59 about origins. In fact, the name Genesis 00:01:41.62\00:01:46.20 means precisely that, origins. Now, allow me to mention as we 00:01:46.23\00:01:52.42 begin our study today the things which the book of 00:01:52.45\00:01:57.75 Genesis mentions as originating. 00:01:57.78\00:02:00.57 First of all, we have the origin of the cosmos. 00:02:00.60\00:02:04.63 That is, of the heavens and 00:02:04.66\00:02:06.82 the earth in Genesis 1 and verse 1. 00:02:06.85\00:02:09.90 We have the origin of plants spoken of in Genesis Chapter 1. 00:02:09.93\00:02:16.46 We have the origin of animals. We have the origin of man... 00:02:16.49\00:02:22.45 The origin of woman... The origin of sin... 00:02:22.48\00:02:26.52 The beginning or the origin of death... 00:02:26.55\00:02:30.00 The beginning or the origin of redemption... 00:02:30.03\00:02:33.29 The beginning of nations... The beginning of languages... 00:02:33.32\00:02:39.22 The beginning of Israel... 00:02:39.25\00:02:42.04 And even the beginning of the Arabs, or the Arabic nations. 00:02:42.07\00:02:48.32 These are just some of the beginnings that we find 00:02:48.35\00:02:51.88 mentioned in the book of Genesis. 00:02:51.91\00:02:55.31 So, the book of Genesis is very important because it goes 00:02:55.34\00:02:59.40 way back into pre-history, as we know it, to describe the 00:02:59.43\00:03:06.06 origins of everything which exists upon this earth. 00:03:06.09\00:03:10.95 Now, allow me to give you a 00:03:10.98\00:03:12.87 little bit about the timeline of Genesis. 00:03:12.90\00:03:15.73 The book of Genesis describes 00:03:15.76\00:03:18.57 the first 2,500 years of human history. 00:03:18.60\00:03:23.88 I believe, as I've examined the contents of the book, that 00:03:23.91\00:03:28.26 it was written by Moses and, actually, it was written 00:03:28.29\00:03:33.23 approximately 1500 years before the birth of Jesus. 00:03:33.26\00:03:38.65 And, so, you can imagine that the book of Genesis was 00:03:38.68\00:03:42.81 actually describing events that took place approximately 00:03:42.84\00:03:47.89 the year 4,000 B.C., 4,000, before Christ. 00:03:47.92\00:03:52.73 And actually, it was written 00:03:52.76\00:03:54.45 1,500 years before Jesus Christ was born. 00:03:54.48\00:04:00.31 The book of Genesis presents a 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.87 short chronology of Planet Earth. 00:04:02.90\00:04:05.28 In other words, it does not 00:04:05.31\00:04:06.76 allow for long periods of millions of years where God 00:04:06.79\00:04:10.82 is creating what is known as progressive creationism. 00:04:10.85\00:04:14.54 The book of Genesis teaches 00:04:14.57\00:04:16.36 that this planet is approximately 6,000 years old 00:04:16.39\00:04:21.21 from the moment in which God began to create upon it. 00:04:21.24\00:04:25.74 And I'd just like to tell you 00:04:25.77\00:04:27.67 up-front, from the very beginning, that in this seminar 00:04:27.70\00:04:30.85 I take the book of Genesis as literal history. 00:04:30.88\00:04:34.63 I believe that it presents a 00:04:34.66\00:04:37.11 short time span for the events that are described in it. 00:04:37.14\00:04:41.38 In other words, we don't have to go back millions of years 00:04:41.41\00:04:45.26 to find out the origin of things in this world. 00:04:45.29\00:04:48.88 All we have to do is go back 00:04:48.91\00:04:51.42 approximately 6,000 years to find the events, for example, 00:04:51.45\00:04:56.99 that are described in Genesis Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. 00:04:57.02\00:05:00.81 The book of Genesis is the seed plot of the Bible. 00:05:00.84\00:05:06.60 Allow me to explain what I mean. 00:05:06.63\00:05:09.16 One of my favorite national 00:05:09.19\00:05:11.85 parks in all of the United States is the one that we have 00:05:11.88\00:05:16.49 just up the mountain, Sequoia National Park. 00:05:16.52\00:05:20.30 I just enjoy going up there and unwinding, and taking it 00:05:20.33\00:05:24.20 easy for a whole day, breathing some fresh air, 00:05:24.23\00:05:26.90 especially when it's foggy here in the Valley. 00:05:26.93\00:05:29.31 And I just enjoy going, for example, to the Grant tree and 00:05:29.34\00:05:33.73 to the General Sherman tree and just standing there 00:05:33.76\00:05:37.29 underneath these trees. It's amazing. 00:05:37.32\00:05:40.26 Some of them are almost 3,000 years old. 00:05:40.29\00:05:45.77 Can you imagine a tree that's almost 3,000 years old? 00:05:45.80\00:05:48.98 And they are hundreds of feet tall. 00:05:49.01\00:05:52.55 And I just am awed every time I go up there, and I stand 00:05:52.58\00:05:56.79 under these trees and I see how thick they are and how 00:05:56.82\00:06:00.63 high they go, and I'm just amazed. 00:06:00.66\00:06:04.30 But have you ever stopped to 00:06:04.33\00:06:06.27 think that the mighty Sequoia, for example, the General 00:06:06.30\00:06:10.63 Sherman tree, actually came from a little seed? 00:06:10.66\00:06:18.04 Have you ever stopped to think that that whole tree that you 00:06:18.07\00:06:22.80 find up there, the General Sherman tree in Sequoia 00:06:22.83\00:06:25.87 National Park, actually was enclosed in code form, so to 00:06:25.90\00:06:33.09 speak, in that little seed, and the seed sprouted and it 00:06:33.12\00:06:38.00 produced after almost 3,000 years this gigantic tree? 00:06:38.03\00:06:43.56 In other words, the Sequoia 00:06:43.59\00:06:45.94 tree was contained in that seed. 00:06:45.97\00:06:49.46 That's the relationship 00:06:49.49\00:06:51.60 between Genesis and the rest of the Bible. 00:06:51.63\00:06:54.60 The book of Genesis has the seeds. 00:06:54.63\00:06:57.17 The rest of the Bible is the 00:06:57.20\00:06:59.41 development and growth of those seeds. 00:06:59.44\00:07:02.76 And eventually the growth reaches its climax, 00:07:02.79\00:07:06.97 or its fullness, in the book of Revelation. 00:07:07.00\00:07:11.99 In other words, we're not 00:07:12.02\00:07:13.67 going to stay in this seminar in the book of Genesis. 00:07:13.70\00:07:16.56 We're going to begin in Genesis in each lecture, and 00:07:16.59\00:07:20.84 we're going to study these seeds. 00:07:20.87\00:07:23.96 And then we're going to see how these seeds develop 00:07:23.99\00:07:27.37 throughout the course of the whole Bible. 00:07:27.40\00:07:30.23 Now, the book of Revelation is 00:07:30.26\00:07:33.59 a very important book to study along with Genesis. 00:07:33.62\00:07:37.01 You notice, for example, in the brochure that many of you 00:07:37.04\00:07:39.86 received in the mail or perhaps in the newspaper or 00:07:39.89\00:07:42.99 maybe somebody gave you one of the brochures, you notice 00:07:43.02\00:07:46.49 there that this seminar is not only about Genesis. 00:07:46.52\00:07:50.03 It is also about the book of Revelation. 00:07:50.06\00:07:52.93 You see, I believe that we 00:07:52.96\00:07:55.15 cannot understand the book of Revelation 00:07:55.18\00:07:57.75 unless we understand the book of Genesis. 00:07:57.78\00:08:01.54 We can never understand the 00:08:01.57\00:08:03.27 end unless we understand, first of all, the beginning; 00:08:03.30\00:08:07.05 because the end is simply the culmination of a process which 00:08:07.08\00:08:12.26 began way back in the book of Genesis. 00:08:12.29\00:08:16.30 Allow me to give you an example of the 00:08:16.33\00:08:19.06 relationship between Genesis and Revelation. 00:08:19.09\00:08:22.16 We'll study these things more fully a little bit later on, 00:08:22.19\00:08:25.30 but I want to give you a couple of examples so that you 00:08:25.33\00:08:28.46 can see how important it is for us to compare and to 00:08:28.49\00:08:33.54 interrelate Genesis with Revelation. 00:08:33.57\00:08:36.88 Go with me in your Bibles to 00:08:36.91\00:08:39.85 Genesis Chapter 3 and verse 15. 00:08:39.88\00:08:42.97 And by the way, in the list of texts that you have, there is 00:08:43.00\00:08:45.97 in parentheses a page number which will make it a lot 00:08:46.00\00:08:50.21 easier for you to find the Bible verses as we move along, 00:08:50.24\00:08:54.55 because the people have heard me say that I go awful fast. 00:08:54.58\00:08:57.59 But with the list you'll know exactly where we're going, and 00:08:57.62\00:09:01.41 so you'll be able to be one-up on me. 00:09:01.44\00:09:03.45 You'll be able to look up the 00:09:03.48\00:09:04.45 next text actually before I even mention it. 00:09:04.46\00:09:07.16 Genesis Chapter 3 and verse 15. 00:09:07.19\00:09:10.90 This is immediately after sin, 00:09:10.93\00:09:13.53 and I want you to notice what it says. 00:09:13.56\00:09:15.41 God speaking: "And I will put enmity between you... " 00:09:15.44\00:09:23.40 that is, the Serpent, "... and the woman, 00:09:23.43\00:09:26.56 and between your seed and her seed. " 00:09:26.59\00:09:32.22 Now, let's stop there for a moment. 00:09:32.25\00:09:35.80 We have four elements 00:09:35.83\00:09:38.11 in what we've read from this verse so far. 00:09:38.14\00:09:40.69 First of all, there is enmity, or war. 00:09:40.72\00:09:44.71 Secondly, there is a Serpent 00:09:44.75\00:09:47.65 whom God is speaking to in this verse. 00:09:47.68\00:09:51.76 In the third place we have a woman, because there is war 00:09:51.79\00:09:56.93 between the Serpent and the woman. 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.99 And in the fourth place, we have "seed. " 00:09:59.02\00:10:03.88 We actually have two seeds, 00:10:03.91\00:10:05.96 the seed of the Serpent and the seed of the woman. 00:10:05.99\00:10:08.95 So, we have these 00:10:08.98\00:10:09.95 four elements: enmity, Serpent, woman, and seed. 00:10:09.98\00:10:15.02 And I want you to notice that 00:10:15.05\00:10:16.60 the enmity runs between the Serpent and the woman, between 00:10:16.63\00:10:21.24 the seed of the Serpent, and the seed of the woman, and 00:10:21.27\00:10:25.13 between the seed of the woman and the Serpent. 00:10:25.16\00:10:28.16 Let's notice this verse again. God says, "I will put enmity 00:10:28.19\00:10:33.33 between you... " the Serpent and the woman. 00:10:33.36\00:10:35.87 There's the first enmity, Serpent and woman. 00:10:35.91\00:10:38.17 "And between your seed... " 00:10:38.21\00:10:40.98 that is, the Serpent's seed, "... and her seed. " 00:10:41.01\00:10:44.66 So, you have enmity between 00:10:44.69\00:10:46.04 "Serpent and woman" and "seed and seed. " 00:10:46.07\00:10:49.08 But that's not the real warfare. 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.06 Even though there is warfare, 00:10:51.09\00:10:53.71 the critical and most important warfare is between 00:10:53.74\00:10:56.88 the seed of the woman and the Serpent because the last part 00:10:56.91\00:11:00.20 of the verse says: "He" - that is, the seed of the woman, 00:11:00.23\00:11:04.34 "... will bruise your head... " the Serpent's head, 00:11:04.37\00:11:08.04 "... and you will bruise his heel. " 00:11:08.07\00:11:11.38 So, the enmity runs three ways: Serpent versus woman, 00:11:11.41\00:11:16.28 seed of the Serpent versus the seed of the woman, and the 00:11:16.31\00:11:19.89 seed of the woman versus the Serpent. 00:11:19.92\00:11:22.09 There's no way in the world 00:11:22.12\00:11:24.06 that we can understand a chapter like Revelation 12 00:11:24.09\00:11:28.25 without comprehending Genesis 3:15, because in 00:11:28.28\00:11:33.26 Revelation Chapter 12- I'll just mention it. 00:11:33.29\00:11:35.36 We have a couple of lectures on Revelation Chapter 12. 00:11:35.39\00:11:38.27 You see, in Revelation 12 00:11:38.30\00:11:40.81 we have a child who is born to a woman. 00:11:40.84\00:11:44.96 And standing next to this 00:11:44.99\00:11:47.65 woman who is about to bear the child is a dragon who is 00:11:47.68\00:11:51.99 identified as the ancient Serpent, the Devil and Satan. 00:11:52.02\00:11:56.87 And it says he wants to devour the child as soon as the child 00:11:56.90\00:12:01.63 is born, the child of the woman. 00:12:01.66\00:12:04.11 Do you see Genesis 3:15 in that passage in Revelation 00:12:04.14\00:12:09.72 Chapter 12 verses 1 through 5? Very clear. 00:12:09.75\00:12:12.95 The warfare was going to be 00:12:12.98\00:12:14.44 between the seed of the woman and the Serpent, and that's 00:12:14.47\00:12:18.35 exactly what you have in Revelation 12:1 through 5. 00:12:18.38\00:12:22.12 But Revelation 12 doesn't end there. 00:12:22.15\00:12:23.94 Later on in the chapter when the child is caught up to God 00:12:23.97\00:12:27.98 and to His throne, which refers to the ascension of 00:12:28.01\00:12:30.92 Christ, we're told that now the woman flees into the 00:12:30.95\00:12:35.51 wilderness, and the Serpent is after the woman. 00:12:35.54\00:12:40.01 And later on even in this 00:12:40.04\00:12:42.47 chapter, in verse 17 we find that the final warfare is no 00:12:42.50\00:12:47.42 longer against the woman, but against the seed's seed. 00:12:47.45\00:12:53.34 In other words, the seed of the woman's seed. 00:12:53.37\00:12:56.40 And, so, there's no way that we can really understand 00:12:56.43\00:12:59.89 Genesis Chapter 3 and verse 15 unless we find the greatest 00:12:59.92\00:13:05.34 development in Revelation Chapter 12 as well as other 00:13:05.37\00:13:09.20 passages that we find in the New Testament. 00:13:09.23\00:13:12.13 Now, allow me to give you one other example. 00:13:12.16\00:13:14.87 Genesis Chapter 2 and verse 24. 00:13:14.90\00:13:20.46 Genesis Chapter 2 and - actually, it's verse 25. 00:13:20.50\00:13:25.28 Genesis 2 and verse 25. 00:13:25.31\00:13:27.15 Speaking about Adam and Eve, it says, "And they were both 00:13:27.18\00:13:31.23 naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. " 00:13:31.26\00:13:38.35 We're going to find in our seminar that the reason why 00:13:38.38\00:13:41.12 they weren't ashamed is because they were not covered 00:13:41.15\00:13:43.83 with human garments made out of material. 00:13:43.86\00:13:47.21 They were actually covered by the glorious light of God. 00:13:47.24\00:13:51.71 They had no artificial garments. 00:13:51.74\00:13:54.33 They were naked with respect 00:13:54.36\00:13:55.98 to garments made out of satin or made out of other material. 00:13:56.01\00:14:00.20 They were covered with the glory of God. 00:14:00.23\00:14:02.95 They were covered with the light of God, the same type of 00:14:02.98\00:14:05.57 garments that God has, according to Psalm 104. 00:14:05.60\00:14:08.72 And that's the reason why they weren't ashamed. 00:14:08.75\00:14:11.46 But then in Genesis Chapter 3 00:14:11.49\00:14:13.57 and verse 7, we find that Adam and Eve sinned. 00:14:13.60\00:14:16.46 And suddenly we find them hiding from God. 00:14:16.49\00:14:19.82 And now they're ashamed, even 00:14:19.85\00:14:22.69 though they've covered themselves with fig leaves. 00:14:22.72\00:14:25.88 They still don't feel like the fig leaves are covering their 00:14:25.91\00:14:28.57 nakedness because the light has gone away from them. 00:14:28.60\00:14:31.28 So, they're hiding from God even though they've 00:14:31.31\00:14:34.68 covered the nakedness of their body with fig leaves, 00:14:34.71\00:14:36.95 they know that their nakedness is nakedness of soul. 00:14:36.98\00:14:40.04 And do you know what God does? 00:14:40.07\00:14:43.34 In Genesis 3:21 it says that God makes garments of 00:14:43.37\00:14:47.38 skins and clothed Adam and Eve to cover their nakedness. 00:14:47.41\00:14:55.13 Now, there's a text in the 00:14:55.16\00:14:57.01 book of Revelation which we could never understand unless 00:14:57.04\00:14:59.81 we catch this background from Genesis Chapter 3. 00:14:59.84\00:15:04.96 And that is the central verse 00:15:04.99\00:15:07.73 in the passage that deals with the Battle of Armageddon. 00:15:07.76\00:15:11.74 There is a lot of talk today 00:15:11.77\00:15:13.72 about Armageddon... what it's going to be, 00:15:13.75\00:15:16.11 what nations it's going to involve, 00:15:16.14\00:15:18.03 what the issues are in this great battle. 00:15:18.06\00:15:21.22 And I've read a lot of books written by many different 00:15:21.25\00:15:23.89 scholars on the Battle of Armageddon. 00:15:23.92\00:15:25.39 In fact, we're going to have a whole lecture later on in this 00:15:25.42\00:15:27.98 series on the Battle of Armageddon. 00:15:28.01\00:15:29.86 But you know what I find interesting? 00:15:29.89\00:15:32.05 Most of those commentaries, 00:15:32.08\00:15:34.39 with very few exceptions, deal with all sorts of issues 00:15:34.42\00:15:39.53 connected with the Battle of Armageddon. 00:15:39.56\00:15:41.09 They talk, for example, about 00:15:41.12\00:15:42.30 the Kings of the East, and they talk about the drying of 00:15:42.33\00:15:45.31 the river Euphrates, and they talk about the three evil 00:15:45.34\00:15:49.38 spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, 00:15:49.41\00:15:52.21 the beast, and the false prophet. 00:15:52.24\00:15:53.51 They have a lot to say about all these things. 00:15:53.54\00:15:55.69 But there's one verse which 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.22 very rarely is even commented on, and it deals with the 00:15:58.25\00:16:02.30 central issue in the Battle of Armageddon. 00:16:02.33\00:16:06.26 And it shows that we must 00:16:06.29\00:16:08.01 study Genesis in order to understand it. 00:16:08.04\00:16:10.80 Go with me to Revelation 16 00:16:10.83\00:16:13.40 and verse 15, and you'll see this. 00:16:13.43\00:16:15.38 Revelation Chapter 16 and verse 15, 00:16:15.41\00:16:19.56 right in the middle of the passage on the 00:16:19.59\00:16:24.72 sixth plague of Revelation. 00:16:24.75\00:16:26.55 And while you're looking 00:16:26.58\00:16:27.55 for that text, allow me to say this. 00:16:27.56\00:16:29.38 This is the only place where Jesus speaks in the book of 00:16:29.41\00:16:36.76 Revelation between Chapter 3 and Chapter 21. 00:16:36.79\00:16:41.69 The only verse. 00:16:41.72\00:16:43.43 If you have a red-letter edition of the Bible where it 00:16:43.46\00:16:46.19 gives the words that are spoken by Jesus, you'll find 00:16:46.22\00:16:49.00 that the last words of Jesus are in Chapter 3. 00:16:49.03\00:16:51.87 The next time that Jesus speaks is in Chapter 21, with 00:16:51.90\00:16:57.05 the exception of Revelation 16 and verse 15. 00:16:57.08\00:17:01.89 Do you figure that if Jesus - this is the only place that 00:17:01.92\00:17:04.86 Jesus speaks between Revelation 3 and Revelation 21, 00:17:04.89\00:17:08.42 that it must be a very important verse? 00:17:08.45\00:17:11.07 Obviously. 00:17:11.10\00:17:12.65 Notice what we find there in Revelation 16 and verse 15. 00:17:12.68\00:17:17.65 Jesus is speaking. 00:17:17.68\00:17:19.92 "Behold, I am coming as a thief. 00:17:19.95\00:17:23.85 Blessed is he who watches and keeps his garments, 00:17:23.88\00:17:34.84 lest he walk naked and they see his shame. " 00:17:34.87\00:17:39.66 Now, you tell me, does that 00:17:39.69\00:17:41.81 verse have anything to do with Genesis Chapter 3? 00:17:41.84\00:17:44.42 You have the same elements. 00:17:44.45\00:17:46.19 You have garments, you have nakedness, and you have shame. 00:17:46.22\00:17:50.24 Obviously there's going to be some people at the end of time, 00:17:50.27\00:17:53.65 living during the period of the Battle of Armageddon, who 00:17:53.68\00:17:57.31 are going to be found naked and their shame will be 00:17:57.34\00:18:01.68 revealed just like Adam and Eve. 00:18:01.71\00:18:04.16 But you cannot understand what 00:18:04.19\00:18:05.87 this means in the end time unless you first understand 00:18:05.90\00:18:09.38 what happened with Adam and Eve in Genesis. 00:18:09.41\00:18:12.34 Because at the end of time it's going to be a repetition 00:18:12.37\00:18:15.00 of what happened in the book of Genesis. 00:18:15.03\00:18:18.18 These are just two examples of how Genesis is very 00:18:18.21\00:18:22.66 intricately intwined with the book of Revelation. 00:18:22.69\00:18:27.64 Now, a question frequently 00:18:27.67\00:18:30.09 comes up when we study the book of Genesis, and that is, 00:18:30.12\00:18:32.80 is the book of Genesis really literal history? 00:18:32.83\00:18:38.11 Or is the book of Genesis legend, myth, 00:18:38.14\00:18:42.26 or as Karl Barth, the great theologian said, saga? 00:18:42.29\00:18:46.89 I want to tell you up-front that I believe the book of 00:18:46.92\00:18:51.32 Genesis, from Genesis 1:1 through the end of Chapter 50, 00:18:51.35\00:18:56.55 is dealing with literal historical events. 00:18:56.58\00:19:01.44 In fact, it might surprise 00:19:01.47\00:19:03.60 some of you to know that up till the Age of the 00:19:03.63\00:19:07.16 Enlightenment in the 18th Century - if you go before 00:19:07.19\00:19:10.75 the 18th Century, you'll find that practically every scholar 00:19:10.78\00:19:15.88 that ever wrote on the book of Genesis believed that the book 00:19:15.91\00:19:19.95 of Genesis was actual, literal history as it took place. 00:19:19.98\00:19:25.22 But in the Age of 00:19:25.25\00:19:26.32 Enlightenment appeared historical criticism, 00:19:26.35\00:19:31.66 and appeared the scientific method. 00:19:31.69\00:19:35.23 And, so, they started applying 00:19:35.26\00:19:36.66 the scientific method and historical criticism to God's 00:19:36.69\00:19:40.39 Holy Word besides doing it to the natural world and to 00:19:40.42\00:19:44.09 documents that had been written in antiquity. 00:19:44.12\00:19:46.46 And for this reason many of 00:19:46.49\00:19:48.44 the scholars came to the conclusion that the book of 00:19:48.47\00:19:51.33 Genesis, particularly Chapters 1 through 11, 00:19:51.36\00:19:53.95 was not describing real, literal history. 00:19:53.98\00:19:57.69 I saw this problem very clearly a few years ago when I 00:19:57.72\00:20:03.05 was at a speaking commitment up in Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:20:03.08\00:20:06.63 There's the university where I went to school. 00:20:06.66\00:20:10.01 They have a fantastic 00:20:10.04\00:20:12.32 theological library with hundreds of thousands of 00:20:12.35\00:20:15.45 books. And, of course, I only had to speak in the evening. 00:20:15.48\00:20:18.49 So, during the daytime I took advantage and went to the 00:20:18.52\00:20:21.50 library for about eight or nine hours a day, 00:20:21.53\00:20:24.15 doing research for this series on the book of Genesis. 00:20:24.18\00:20:27.62 And as I examined the 00:20:27.65\00:20:29.89 commentaries that were written on the book of Genesis, there 00:20:29.92\00:20:33.52 is something which really struck me, and that is that 00:20:33.55\00:20:37.93 most of the commentators really did not believe in the 00:20:37.96\00:20:43.57 historicity of the book of Genesis. 00:20:43.60\00:20:45.84 They did not believe that it's literal history. 00:20:45.87\00:20:48.44 And these were Christian commentators who were actually 00:20:48.47\00:20:52.62 writing on the book of Genesis. 00:20:52.65\00:20:55.24 In fact, I had to snicker when I was researching the story of 00:20:55.27\00:21:01.94 Eve and the Serpent which spoke to Eve, and a scholar - 00:21:01.97\00:21:06.58 several of them actually - said the reason why this story 00:21:06.61\00:21:10.15 was included in Genesis is to explain the reason why people 00:21:10.18\00:21:15.03 are afraid of snakes. 00:21:15.06\00:21:18.24 And then I went on to the 00:21:18.27\00:21:19.98 story of Cain and Abel, and several of the authors said 00:21:20.01\00:21:24.49 the reason why you have the story of Cain and Abel in the 00:21:24.52\00:21:27.94 book of Genesis is to explain the origin of sibling rivalry. 00:21:27.97\00:21:32.85 And then I continued studying 00:21:32.88\00:21:34.93 and I got to Genesis Chapter 11 where it speaks about the 00:21:34.96\00:21:38.55 Tower of Babel, the confusion of the languages, and the 00:21:38.58\00:21:41.76 commentary said, you know, this did not really happen in 00:21:41.79\00:21:45.86 history, this idea that they tried to build a 00:21:45.89\00:21:49.49 tower and God confused their languages. 00:21:49.52\00:21:51.86 The scholars said the reason why this story was written was 00:21:51.89\00:21:55.97 in order to explain why in the world you have so many 00:21:56.00\00:22:00.08 different languages... and so on. 00:22:00.11\00:22:04.27 Most of the scholars that I 00:22:04.30\00:22:06.28 read would be called liberal scholars. 00:22:06.31\00:22:09.83 They do not believe in the full inspiration of scripture. 00:22:09.86\00:22:14.06 And, therefore, they do not believe that the stories of 00:22:14.09\00:22:17.03 Genesis are really literal history. 00:22:17.06\00:22:19.91 Is the book of Genesis, though, literal history? 00:22:19.94\00:22:23.96 Let me share this with you, Folks. 00:22:23.99\00:22:26.58 If we don't believe that the book of Genesis is dealing 00:22:26.61\00:22:30.47 with literal historical events, we are not only 00:22:30.50\00:22:34.35 impugning the veracity of Moses. 00:22:34.38\00:22:37.46 We are impugning the veracity 00:22:37.49\00:22:41.02 of Peter, and Paul, and Stephen, and Luke, and Jesus. 00:22:41.05\00:22:49.68 Do you realize that every single story, without 00:22:49.71\00:22:55.94 exception, in the book of Genesis is repeated as literal 00:22:55.97\00:23:00.90 history in the New Testament by the New Testament authors? 00:23:00.93\00:23:03.69 Many of these events in 00:23:03.72\00:23:05.57 Genesis are told by Jesus in the Gospels. 00:23:05.60\00:23:08.77 Let's notice, for example, 00:23:08.80\00:23:11.03 Matthew Chapter 19 and verses 4 through 6. 00:23:11.06\00:23:19.57 Here Jesus is speaking about the origin of marriage. 00:23:19.60\00:23:23.78 And notice what we find there. 00:23:23.81\00:23:26.00 Genesis Chapter 19 and verse 4. 00:23:26.03\00:23:29.04 "And he," that is Jesus, "answered and said to them... 00:23:29.07\00:23:34.98 Question: Did Jesus believe that there was a literal 00:24:07.71\00:24:11.28 marriage originally in Genesis between Adam and Eve? 00:24:11.31\00:24:15.97 He most certainly did. And if you say that that story 00:24:16.00\00:24:20.07 is myth or legend or saga, you are not only impugning 00:24:20.10\00:24:24.75 the veracity of Moses; you are questioning 00:24:24.78\00:24:27.68 the veracity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:24:27.71\00:24:31.86 Notice also Matthew Chapter 24 and verses 37 to 39, just a 00:24:31.89\00:24:38.56 few examples here. Matthew 24 verses 37 to 39. 00:24:38.59\00:24:44.34 This is speaking about The Flood in the days of Noah. 00:24:44.37\00:24:49.12 It's called Noah's Flood, but it really was the Lord's Flood. 00:24:49.15\00:24:52.27 Notice Matthew Chapter 24 and beginning with verse 37... 00:24:52.30\00:24:58.17 Did Jesus believe that The Flood in the days of Noah 00:25:29.70\00:25:33.13 actually took place historically? 00:25:33.16\00:25:35.82 He did. And by the way, if you don't 00:25:35.85\00:25:38.48 believe that The Flood took place historically, you don't 00:25:38.51\00:25:41.59 have any basis for believing that Jesus is telling the 00:25:41.62\00:25:44.09 truth when he says he's going to come again... 00:25:44.12\00:25:45.95 because he says as it was back then, so will it be. 00:25:45.98\00:25:50.48 But if that "back then" didn't happen, what makes you think 00:25:50.51\00:25:53.63 that what he predicted in the future is going to happen? 00:25:53.66\00:25:57.11 Let's notice another couple of examples. 00:25:57.14\00:26:00.40 1 John Chapter 3 and verse 12. 00:26:00.43\00:26:07.58 You'll notice that we're using scripture a lot. 00:26:07.61\00:26:11.03 And the list that you got tonight is a short list. 00:26:11.06\00:26:13.37 We're going to be using a lot of scripture here in the 00:26:13.40\00:26:16.88 future lectures of the seminar. 00:26:16.91\00:26:18.32 Notice 1 John Chapter 3 and verse 12. 00:26:18.35\00:26:23.09 It says there... 00:26:23.12\00:26:25.82 Question: Did the Apostle John who wrote 1 John believe that 00:26:43.24\00:26:48.46 the story of Cain and Abel was literal history? 00:26:48.49\00:26:52.43 He most certainly did. 00:26:52.46\00:26:54.09 Because it tells us here that Cain killed his brother Abel. 00:26:54.12\00:27:00.16 So, John believed that this 00:27:00.19\00:27:02.54 was a real historical occurrence. 00:27:02.57\00:27:05.97 Let's notice another example. 00:27:06.00\00:27:07.82 Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse 5. 00:27:07.85\00:27:15.01 Here we find a very interesting person mentioned. 00:27:15.04\00:27:18.67 Actually, he's not mentioned very frequently in scripture. 00:27:18.70\00:27:22.99 The Bible tells us that he was caught away to heaven. 00:27:23.02\00:27:27.09 In fact, he never suffered death, according to Genesis 5, 00:27:27.12\00:27:30.53 compared with Hebrews Chapter 11. 00:27:30.56\00:27:32.83 His name was Enoch. 00:27:32.86\00:27:35.21 Now, notice Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse 5... 00:27:35.24\00:27:39.81 Now, let me ask you: Did the author of the book of Hebrews 00:28:01.01\00:28:04.18 believe that Enoch was a real historical person? 00:28:04.21\00:28:07.23 He most certainly did. And, by the way, I believe 00:28:07.26\00:28:09.60 that the author of the book of Hebrews was the Apostle Paul. 00:28:09.63\00:28:12.81 I believe that there's plenty 00:28:12.84\00:28:14.04 of internal evidence to that fact. 00:28:14.07\00:28:16.05 So, did Paul believe that 00:28:16.08\00:28:18.56 Enoch was a real historical person? 00:28:18.59\00:28:20.88 He most certainly did. 00:28:20.91\00:28:22.68 Let's notice one further example. 00:28:22.71\00:28:25.12 And, by the way, in the reference material that you'll 00:28:25.15\00:28:27.03 receive this evening, you're going to have half a page of 00:28:27.06\00:28:30.36 references from the New Testament to every single 00:28:30.39\00:28:33.95 event and person in the book of Genesis. 00:28:33.98\00:28:37.28 You have Abraham, you have Isaac, you have Jacob, you 00:28:37.31\00:28:40.99 have Joseph, you have the 12 sons of Jacob. 00:28:41.02\00:28:44.33 I mean, you have every single event in the book of Genesis 00:28:44.36\00:28:49.09 repeated somewhere in the New Testament. 00:28:49.12\00:28:52.25 Notice Luke Chapter 3. This will be the last example 00:28:52.28\00:28:56.65 that we'll give of the importance of believing in the 00:28:56.68\00:28:59.16 historicity of the book of Genesis. 00:28:59.19\00:29:01.63 Luke Chapter 3 has the genealogy of Jesus Christ. 00:29:01.66\00:29:07.59 And I want you to notice - 00:29:07.62\00:29:10.62 we're only going to read two verses, Chapter 3 and verse 00:29:10.65\00:29:14.26 23, and then we're going to jump down to verse 38. 00:29:14.29\00:29:18.38 It says in verse 23, "Now, Jesus himself began his 00:29:18.41\00:29:23.54 ministry at about 30 years of age; being as was supposed the 00:29:23.57\00:29:28.93 son of Joseph, the son of Eli... " 00:29:28.96\00:29:31.63 And then it continues giving 00:29:31.66\00:29:33.07 the genealogy... "the son of," "the son of," "the son of... " 00:29:33.10\00:29:35.49 And I want you to notice how the list ends in verse 38. 00:29:35.52\00:29:40.00 It says there, "the son of Enosh, 00:29:40.03\00:29:44.24 the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. " 00:29:44.27\00:29:51.56 Do you believe that Jesus 00:29:51.59\00:29:53.02 was a literal historical personage? 00:29:53.05\00:29:55.15 Do you think that Jesus existed in history? 00:29:55.18\00:29:57.05 Well, we have proof from 00:29:57.08\00:29:58.84 secular historians that Jesus did exist. 00:29:58.87\00:30:01.65 Now, you notice that this genealogy actually begins with 00:30:01.68\00:30:06.52 Jesus and ends with whom? Ends with Adam. 00:30:06.55\00:30:10.56 Now, was Jesus a real, literal historical person? 00:30:10.59\00:30:14.99 He most certainly was. 00:30:15.02\00:30:16.64 So, must Adam also be a literal historical person? 00:30:16.67\00:30:21.01 Obviously yes. You can't have it 00:30:21.04\00:30:23.05 one way with Adam and another way with Jesus. 00:30:23.08\00:30:26.60 If Jesus is a real historical person, so is Adam. 00:30:26.63\00:30:30.80 And, by the way, you'll notice in this genealogy that the 00:30:30.83\00:30:33.62 roots of Jesus are traced all the way back from his day to 00:30:33.65\00:30:38.95 Adam, and you don't have long periods of millions of years 00:30:38.98\00:30:43.99 in between, according to this genealogy. 00:30:44.02\00:30:47.23 And, so, I believe it is of extreme importance for us to 00:30:47.26\00:30:52.24 believe in the historicity of the book of Genesis. 00:30:52.27\00:30:55.76 It is not myth. It is not legend. 00:30:55.79\00:30:58.75 It is not saga. It is real history. 00:30:58.78\00:31:04.19 Now, allow me to mention a few things about the disciplines 00:31:04.22\00:31:09.51 that are addressed in the book of Genesis. 00:31:09.54\00:31:12.56 Do you know that the book of 00:31:12.59\00:31:13.99 Genesis addresses at least in seminal form most of the 00:31:14.02\00:31:18.92 disciplines that are studied in universities today? 00:31:18.95\00:31:21.67 Allow me to give you a list quickly. 00:31:21.70\00:31:23.84 The book of Genesis has a lot to say about theology. 00:31:23.87\00:31:27.90 You know, if people believe 00:31:27.93\00:31:29.72 the book of Genesis, there wouldn't be any atheists in 00:31:29.75\00:31:32.30 the world because the book of Genesis begins by saying, 00:31:32.33\00:31:35.35 "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. " 00:31:35.38\00:31:39.63 That is a theological statement. 00:31:39.66\00:31:41.66 The book of Genesis does not 00:31:41.69\00:31:43.02 try to prove the existence of God. 00:31:43.05\00:31:45.19 The book of Genesis takes the existence of God for granted. 00:31:45.22\00:31:49.58 It makes this wonderful theological statement. 00:31:49.61\00:31:52.78 The book of Genesis has a lot to say about cosmology, the 00:31:52.81\00:31:56.73 origin of the heavens and the earth. 00:31:56.76\00:31:59.53 You can find that in Chapter 1 and verses 6 through 8. 00:31:59.56\00:32:03.06 The book of Genesis actually speaks about the origin of 00:32:03.09\00:32:06.91 chronology, or time, because after each day of creation it 00:32:06.94\00:32:11.85 says that God saw that what He had made was good, and it was 00:32:11.88\00:32:16.37 the evening of the morning of the first day, the second day 00:32:16.40\00:32:20.05 and the third day... and so on. 00:32:20.08\00:32:21.92 And in Genesis Chapter 1 00:32:21.95\00:32:23.31 it speaks about God making the sun, the moon and the stars to 00:32:23.34\00:32:28.04 establish seasons and periods of the year. 00:32:28.07\00:32:31.35 You can find that in Chapter 1. 00:32:31.38\00:32:33.11 So, in other words, God created chronology; He created 00:32:33.14\00:32:36.51 months, He created years, and He created days 00:32:36.54\00:32:40.10 as the frame of reference of time in this earth. 00:32:40.13\00:32:44.30 You also find in the book of Genesis the origins of 00:32:44.33\00:32:47.79 geography, where the dry land came from. 00:32:47.82\00:32:51.51 You see, it tells us in 00:32:51.54\00:32:53.98 Genesis Chapter 1 and verse 2 that the earth was completely 00:32:54.01\00:32:57.10 covered with water before creation. 00:32:57.13\00:32:58.92 But God was the one who made the earth... Geography. 00:32:58.95\00:33:02.77 The book of Genesis also addresses the issue of botany. 00:33:02.80\00:33:06.80 It says that every plant reproduces according to its 00:33:06.83\00:33:10.33 kind, and that is true even till this day. 00:33:10.36\00:33:14.33 Every plant reproduces according to its kind. 00:33:14.36\00:33:18.39 So, Genesis definitely has something to say about the 00:33:18.42\00:33:21.39 origin of trees and plants and grass. 00:33:21.42\00:33:24.88 The book of Genesis actually 00:33:24.91\00:33:27.41 speaks about the origin of zoology, the study of animals. 00:33:27.44\00:33:31.25 And, by the way, the book of Genesis indicates that all of 00:33:31.28\00:33:35.10 the animals were created adults, so to speak. 00:33:35.13\00:33:38.33 All of the animals were 00:33:38.36\00:33:39.40 created on the fifth and the sixth day... adults. 00:33:39.43\00:33:43.60 They did not take millions of 00:33:43.63\00:33:45.96 years to evolve, according to the book of Genesis. 00:33:45.99\00:33:48.76 God spoke, and on the 00:33:48.79\00:33:51.30 fifth day the birds and the fish appeared. 00:33:51.33\00:33:53.35 God spoke, and on the sixth day the land animals appeared. 00:33:53.38\00:33:58.13 So, the book of Genesis indicates that man is not the 00:33:58.16\00:34:02.45 end of a long evolutionary process where we come from 00:34:02.48\00:34:06.30 primates and the primates came from lower forms of life. 00:34:06.33\00:34:09.90 The book of Genesis simply says, clearly and directly, 00:34:09.93\00:34:14.34 that God spoke and things were done. 00:34:14.37\00:34:18.93 And, so, the book of Genesis 00:34:18.96\00:34:20.88 deals with zoology, and it says that every animal is to 00:34:20.91\00:34:23.77 reproduce according to its kind. 00:34:23.80\00:34:25.29 That is also a scientifically true statement. 00:34:25.32\00:34:28.83 The book of Genesis has a lot 00:34:28.86\00:34:31.67 to say about anthropology, the study of man. 00:34:31.70\00:34:34.59 In fact, it speaks about the origin of man and woman, and 00:34:34.62\00:34:39.48 it speaks about how Adam was taken from the dust. 00:34:39.51\00:34:43.27 And by the way, I believe that 00:34:43.30\00:34:44.29 that's a literal story, that God took clay and he formed 00:34:44.32\00:34:48.28 Adam, and then he took a rib from Adam and he made Eve. 00:34:48.31\00:34:51.47 You say, "Well, that's kind of unscientific. " 00:34:51.50\00:34:54.14 Well, the fact is that scientists weren't there. 00:34:54.17\00:34:56.76 And if we have faith in God's 00:34:56.79\00:34:59.69 word, faith means having faith and trusting what God says, 00:34:59.72\00:35:04.60 we'll have absolutely no problem with that story. 00:35:04.63\00:35:07.57 The book of Genesis has a lot to say about sociology. 00:35:07.60\00:35:11.18 Why do people get married today? 00:35:11.21\00:35:14.20 And why do they have children? 00:35:14.23\00:35:15.59 Why have we had this big uproar recently about a man 00:35:15.62\00:35:19.18 marrying a man and a woman marrying a woman? 00:35:19.21\00:35:21.35 It's because it's contrary to 00:35:21.38\00:35:24.00 what we find in the book of Genesis. 00:35:24.03\00:35:26.20 God established the ideal social circle. 00:35:26.23\00:35:29.70 He established marriage, the marriage between a man and a 00:35:29.73\00:35:33.73 woman, to have children in a family unit. 00:35:33.76\00:35:36.57 And Genesis has the origins of that. 00:35:36.60\00:35:40.42 The book of Genesis has a lot 00:35:40.45\00:35:42.40 to say about psychology, believe it or not. 00:35:42.43\00:35:45.10 It would be interesting for you sometime just to sit down 00:35:45.13\00:35:48.31 and look at all the psychological concepts you 00:35:48.34\00:35:50.66 find in the book of Genesis. It's amazing. 00:35:50.69\00:35:53.02 You know, psychologists today try to solve the problem of 00:35:53.05\00:35:56.07 depression and low self-esteem and fear, you know, with all 00:35:56.10\00:36:00.09 sorts of gimmicks and methodologies. 00:36:00.12\00:36:02.98 The fact is that we're going 00:36:03.01\00:36:04.85 to notice in our study tomorrow that the origin of 00:36:04.88\00:36:08.96 fear and the origin of a low self-concept and the origin of 00:36:08.99\00:36:14.85 strife in marriage and the origin of strife between 00:36:14.88\00:36:19.79 brother and brother - like in the case of Cain and Abel - 00:36:19.82\00:36:23.40 is not due to some psychological malfunction. 00:36:23.43\00:36:27.55 It is due to sin. And unless a counselor deals 00:36:27.58\00:36:34.38 with the issue of sin, the problem will not be resolved. 00:36:34.41\00:36:38.96 Genesis has a lot to say about psychology. 00:36:38.99\00:36:42.87 The book of Genesis has a lot 00:36:42.90\00:36:44.53 to say about geology, the study of the earth. 00:36:44.56\00:36:47.17 And, you know, you have scientists today Who don't 00:36:47.20\00:36:50.43 believe that there was a universal flood. 00:36:50.46\00:36:52.88 I believe that you have to study the story of The Flood 00:36:52.91\00:36:55.67 in order to be able to read the earth correctly, because 00:36:55.70\00:36:59.49 at The Flood, the earth went through huge changes. 00:36:59.52\00:37:03.27 In fact, if you read in Chapter 8 of Genesis, that 00:37:03.30\00:37:06.56 after The Flood, God caused a mighty wind to blow! 00:37:06.59\00:37:10.19 And that mighty wind, you know, buried everything that 00:37:10.22\00:37:13.90 was on the surface of the earth. 00:37:13.93\00:37:15.36 In other words, you had an upheaval of the earth. 00:37:15.39\00:37:18.12 You know, we all probably have 00:37:18.15\00:37:20.27 seen the graphic pictures on television of the tsunami. 00:37:20.30\00:37:25.25 Have you noticed that, 00:37:25.28\00:37:27.31 the devastation and the destruction? 00:37:27.34\00:37:29.18 And that was just a tidal wave 00:37:29.21\00:37:31.39 in a certain region of the world. 00:37:31.42\00:37:34.15 Can you imagine what it must have been like to have this 00:37:34.18\00:37:39.43 whole world totally covered with water with a huge storm 00:37:39.46\00:37:44.83 that lasted 40 days and 40 nights, where the Bible says 00:37:44.97\00:37:48.50 that out of the earth came gushing forth jets of water! 00:37:48.53\00:37:53.21 And the windows of heaven were opened! 00:37:53.24\00:37:56.06 The earth was in turmoil! No wonder science today cannot 00:37:56.09\00:38:00.58 read the earth in the correct way, because the earth is 00:38:00.61\00:38:06.37 nothing like it was at the beginning. 00:38:06.40\00:38:08.51 And, so, in order to get a true concept of geology, we 00:38:08.54\00:38:12.65 must make reference to the book of Genesis. 00:38:12.68\00:38:15.49 The book of Genesis addresses 00:38:15.52\00:38:17.71 the issue of philology, the study of languages. 00:38:17.74\00:38:20.43 It tells us where languages originated. 00:38:20.46\00:38:23.14 The book of Genesis has a 00:38:23.17\00:38:24.57 description of ethnology, the origin of nations. 00:38:24.60\00:38:27.76 In fact, in Genesis Chapter 10, 00:38:27.79\00:38:29.51 we have the table of nations which describes the origin of 00:38:29.54\00:38:32.94 all of the nations that have ever existed on Planet Earth. 00:38:32.97\00:38:36.99 The book of Genesis also addresses some very important 00:38:37.02\00:38:40.91 existential questions, like you noticed in your handbill. 00:38:40.94\00:38:44.83 We're going to be dealing with 00:38:44.86\00:38:46.18 all of these issues as we go along in this seminar... 00:38:46.21\00:38:49.13 How did I get here? Why am I here? 00:38:49.16\00:38:53.86 Does my life have meaning and purpose? 00:38:53.89\00:38:57.75 Is there really a God who loves me? 00:38:57.78\00:39:02.17 You know, lots of people after 00:39:02.20\00:39:04.19 the tsunami say, you know, "If there's a God like that who 00:39:04.22\00:39:07.28 allows that, I don't even want to believe in a God like that. " 00:39:07.31\00:39:10.31 And... "If a God like that exists," 00:39:10.34\00:39:12.65 you know, "I certainly don't want to serve him. " 00:39:12.68\00:39:15.01 The fact is, is God good? 00:39:15.04\00:39:19.13 And why is there so much evil if God is good? 00:39:19.16\00:39:22.24 We'll have a whole lecture 00:39:22.27\00:39:23.48 where we're going to decode the paradox of good and evil. 00:39:23.51\00:39:26.38 We're going to answer the question, "How can I 00:39:26.41\00:39:28.73 experience personal peace in a world of strife?" 00:39:28.76\00:39:31.23 Everybody's nervous today. Everybody is anxious about 00:39:31.26\00:39:34.72 perhaps another terrorist attack, or homeland security. 00:39:34.75\00:39:39.55 You know, how can we live life and experience personal peace 00:39:39.58\00:39:43.65 in all of the strife that surrounds us? 00:39:43.68\00:39:45.95 How can I enjoy quality time in the rat race of life? 00:39:45.98\00:39:50.11 What happens the moment I die? If I die, will I live again? 00:39:50.14\00:39:55.56 Is there really a better world coming? 00:39:55.59\00:39:58.80 Is there such a thing as absolute truth? 00:39:58.83\00:40:02.04 If there is absolute truth, how can I find it? 00:40:02.07\00:40:05.59 How can I enjoy life filled 00:40:05.62\00:40:09.15 with health and with prosperity? 00:40:09.18\00:40:11.48 All of these issues are 00:40:11.51\00:40:12.85 addressed very carefully in the book of Genesis. 00:40:12.88\00:40:17.31 Now, did you know that the 00:40:17.34\00:40:19.92 book of Genesis is actually the story of two seeds? 00:40:19.95\00:40:24.20 And we're going to further 00:40:24.23\00:40:26.51 develop this concept of the two seeds. 00:40:26.54\00:40:29.33 It begins in Genesis 3 verse 15. 00:40:29.36\00:40:32.26 "I will put enmity between you and the woman. " 00:40:32.29\00:40:35.91 See the two sides there? The Serpent and the woman... 00:40:35.94\00:40:38.78 between the Serpent's seed and the woman's seed. 00:40:38.81\00:40:42.79 See, there you have the two's again. 00:40:42.82\00:40:44.86 "He," the seed of the woman, 00:40:44.89\00:40:47.70 "will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel. " 00:40:47.73\00:40:52.58 Do you see the controversy and the conflict there between 00:40:52.61\00:40:55.38 Serpent and woman, seed and seed, seed and Serpent? 00:40:55.41\00:41:00.37 The story of Genesis, which is developed in the rest of 00:41:00.40\00:41:03.20 scripture, has to do with a battle between two seeds. 00:41:03.23\00:41:08.96 Not only do you have this in Genesis 3 verse 15, but you 00:41:08.99\00:41:13.94 also have it in the story of Cain and Abel. 00:41:13.97\00:41:16.15 Do you know the first example of Genesis 3:15 is in the 00:41:16.18\00:41:18.97 story of Cain and Abel. You say, How is that? 00:41:19.00\00:41:22.17 Well, let's look for the four elements. 00:41:22.20\00:41:24.40 Is there a woman in the story of Cain and Abel? 00:41:24.43\00:41:26.96 Sure. It's Eve. 00:41:26.99\00:41:28.84 She's the mother of both of them. 00:41:28.87\00:41:30.19 Do you have in the story of Cain and Abel enmity? 00:41:30.22\00:41:34.69 You most certainly do. 00:41:34.72\00:41:36.70 Cain gets angry and hates his brother. 00:41:36.73\00:41:39.56 Do you have in the story of Cain and Abel two seeds that 00:41:39.59\00:41:44.53 are totally unlike, one good and one evil? 00:41:44.56\00:41:48.12 Absolutely. And do you know that even the 00:41:48.15\00:41:51.51 Serpent is involved in the story of Cain and Abel? 00:41:51.54\00:41:53.85 Not directly in Genesis, but 00:41:53.88\00:41:56.01 if you go to 1 John 3:12 which we've already read, it says, 00:41:56.04\00:41:59.52 "Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one. " 00:41:59.55\00:42:04.41 So, the one who wanted Abel dead was not only Cain; it was 00:42:04.44\00:42:08.78 "the wicked one" of whom Cain was seed. 00:42:08.81\00:42:13.11 And, so, you have this enmity between Cain and Abel. 00:42:13.14\00:42:16.70 A little bit later on in the 00:42:16.73\00:42:18.24 book, you have this illicit relationship between the sons 00:42:18.27\00:42:22.32 of God and the daughters of men. 00:42:22.35\00:42:24.52 We're going to deal with that later on. 00:42:24.55\00:42:25.85 Who are the sons of God that 00:42:25.88\00:42:27.61 unite with the daughters of men? 00:42:27.64\00:42:29.55 You have two different seeds, 00:42:29.58\00:42:31.32 the righteous and the unrighteous intermingling. 00:42:31.35\00:42:34.51 Once again, you have the idea of the two seeds. 00:42:34.54\00:42:37.00 And then of course in the 00:42:37.03\00:42:39.02 story of Noah, you have the righteous who are saved inside 00:42:39.05\00:42:42.39 and the wicked who are destroyed outside. 00:42:42.42\00:42:45.09 And then a little bit later on in Genesis Chapter 10, you 00:42:45.12\00:42:49.00 have the descendants of Shem, the son of Noah. 00:42:49.03\00:42:52.09 And on the other side you have 00:42:52.12\00:42:54.19 the descendants of Ham and Japheth. 00:42:54.22\00:42:56.23 By the way, we're going to 00:42:56.26\00:42:57.23 notice that the descendants of Ham and Japheth, the nations 00:42:57.24\00:43:00.16 that came from them, were the very enemies which tried to 00:43:00.19\00:43:03.71 destroy Israel in the Old Testament. 00:43:03.74\00:43:06.02 Israel descends from Shem, whereas all of the nations 00:43:06.05\00:43:09.47 which tried to destroy Israel descend from Ham and Japheth. 00:43:09.50\00:43:13.92 Very interesting. 00:43:13.95\00:43:14.95 We'll deal with this a little bit later on. 00:43:14.98\00:43:16.64 But you have the idea of the two seeds. 00:43:16.67\00:43:18.41 And then you have the builders of the Tower of Babel. 00:43:18.44\00:43:21.27 And God commands Abraham, he says to Abraham, "Get out of 00:43:21.30\00:43:26.98 the place where the Babel builders built this tower"; 00:43:27.01\00:43:30.00 because the Bible says that Abraham and his family were 00:43:30.03\00:43:33.92 getting contaminated with the gods of Babylon. 00:43:33.95\00:43:36.31 And, so, God says to Abraham, 00:43:36.34\00:43:38.02 "You can't be with that evil seed... 00:43:38.05\00:43:40.21 You must separate from them. " 00:43:40.24\00:43:42.14 So, there you have once again the idea of the two seeds. 00:43:42.17\00:43:45.11 Time and again in the book of 00:43:45.14\00:43:47.30 Genesis, you have this idea of the two seeds. 00:43:47.33\00:43:50.06 Then you have the story of Isaac and Ishmael. 00:43:50.09\00:43:53.69 Notice once again the same idea of the two seeds. 00:43:53.72\00:43:56.67 Isaac is the seed of the Promise. 00:43:56.70\00:43:58.83 Ishmael, we're told in 00:43:58.86\00:44:01.24 Galatians Chapter 4, that he arose to try and kill Isaac 00:44:01.27\00:44:06.00 who was the son of the Promise. 00:44:06.03\00:44:07.76 Once again, you have this 00:44:07.79\00:44:08.87 enmity between a good seed and an evil seed. 00:44:08.90\00:44:13.04 And then, of course, you have the story of Jacob and Esau. 00:44:13.07\00:44:15.99 See the twosomes in this book? It's amazing. 00:44:16.02\00:44:18.99 And, by the way, in the book 00:44:19.02\00:44:20.44 of Revelation this is going to culminate. 00:44:20.47\00:44:22.61 These people who are 00:44:22.64\00:44:24.03 individuals in Genesis - Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Esau, 00:44:24.06\00:44:28.88 Cain and Abel - actually are individuals who represent two 00:44:28.91\00:44:34.19 worldwide groups at the end of time. 00:44:34.22\00:44:37.67 They're symbolic in miniature of the characteristics which 00:44:37.70\00:44:42.33 two groups will have at the end of time. 00:44:42.36\00:44:44.92 And, so, we must know the 00:44:44.95\00:44:46.08 characters of Jacob and Esau, Isaac and Ishmael, Cain and 00:44:46.11\00:44:51.27 Abel in order to understand what the characters of the two 00:44:51.30\00:44:54.41 groups at the end of time are going to be like. 00:44:54.44\00:44:57.79 And then, of course, you have Joseph and his brothers. 00:44:57.82\00:45:01.63 You have Lot and the inhabitants of Sodom. 00:45:01.66\00:45:04.49 I could continue going through Genesis. 00:45:04.52\00:45:06.24 You have this idea of the two 00:45:06.27\00:45:07.79 seeds... battles of one seed against another. 00:45:07.82\00:45:12.25 Now, before we draw this to a 00:45:12.28\00:45:14.36 close this evening, I need to tell you something which is 00:45:14.39\00:45:19.08 very important, probably the most important thing that I'm 00:45:19.11\00:45:22.27 going to deal with tonight, and that is the secret to 00:45:22.30\00:45:26.39 decode or to break the code of the book of Genesis. 00:45:26.42\00:45:30.69 You see, the book of Genesis on the surface appears to be a 00:45:30.72\00:45:37.72 collection of stories that took place once upon a time. 00:45:37.75\00:45:44.18 But those who read the book of Genesis only as history are 00:45:44.21\00:45:50.03 missing the deeper dimension of the book of Genesis. 00:45:50.06\00:45:54.64 We're going to see in this seminar that every story of 00:45:54.67\00:45:58.87 Genesis is not only a story, but a prophecy. 00:45:58.90\00:46:03.91 In fact, I believe I can show that every story in the Old 00:46:03.94\00:46:08.77 Testament is a prophecy... A prophecy about the coming 00:46:08.80\00:46:13.55 Messiah - Jesus in His First Coming - and also a prophecy 00:46:13.58\00:46:18.23 about events surrounding the Second Coming of Christ. 00:46:18.26\00:46:22.35 In other words, the book of Genesis is literal history, 00:46:22.38\00:46:25.74 but it is prophecy written as history. 00:46:25.77\00:46:29.47 In other words, beyond the 00:46:29.50\00:46:31.74 local historical events, they become symbolic or 00:46:31.77\00:46:35.45 representative of future worldwide events. 00:46:35.48\00:46:40.88 I already mentioned as an example Genesis 3:15, 00:46:40.91\00:46:45.38 and how it's fulfilled in Revelation 12. 00:46:45.41\00:46:47.56 We'll be studying this in more detail. 00:46:47.59\00:46:49.66 You find the same elements. 00:46:49.69\00:46:51.52 You find enmity, you find a woman, you find a seed of 00:46:51.55\00:46:55.03 the woman, you find the Serpent trying to kill the 00:46:55.06\00:46:57.18 seed and then trying to kill the woman. 00:46:57.21\00:46:58.97 There's no way we can 00:46:59.00\00:47:00.28 understand end-time prophecy without understanding the 00:47:00.31\00:47:03.58 issues that are brought up in Genesis 3 verse 15. 00:47:03.61\00:47:07.66 By the way, if you read 00:47:07.69\00:47:09.34 Genesis Chapter 1 and 2, you'll find that the Garden of 00:47:09.37\00:47:12.68 Eden has rivers of living water flowing through them, 00:47:12.71\00:47:17.68 and you'll find that in the garden was the Tree of Life. 00:47:17.71\00:47:22.03 Have you ever noticed that in Revelation Chapter 21 and 22, 00:47:22.06\00:47:26.89 you have the River of the Water of Life? 00:47:26.92\00:47:30.14 And you have, once again restored, the Tree of Life. 00:47:30.17\00:47:34.92 In other words, what we have in Genesis is the original 00:47:34.95\00:47:39.32 Garden of Eden and the losing of Eden because of sin. 00:47:39.35\00:47:43.54 In the middle, the rest of the Bible, you find the story of 00:47:43.57\00:47:47.47 how God acts to redeem that which was lost. 00:47:47.50\00:47:51.66 And in Revelation 21 and 22, 00:47:51.69\00:47:53.91 you have the restoring of the original Garden of Eden. 00:47:53.94\00:47:58.06 So, there's a close relationship between Genesis 1 00:47:58.09\00:48:01.13 and 2, and Revelation Chapter 21 and 22. 00:48:01.16\00:48:04.91 You find, for example, the story of Cain and Abel. 00:48:04.94\00:48:09.69 This story is not only history... It's a prophecy. 00:48:09.72\00:48:12.82 We're going to have a whole lecture, 00:48:12.85\00:48:14.57 I mentioned, on the Battle of Armageddon. 00:48:14.60\00:48:16.14 If you want to know what the issues are going to be in the 00:48:16.17\00:48:19.95 final Battle of Armageddon, you have to know what the 00:48:19.98\00:48:23.18 issues were in the story of Cain and Abel. 00:48:23.21\00:48:26.12 And we're going to find that the issues in that original 00:48:26.15\00:48:30.21 story revolved around obedience and worship. 00:48:30.24\00:48:35.53 And if you go to the book of Revelation, you're going to 00:48:35.56\00:48:38.02 find that the issues which are going to separate the world 00:48:38.05\00:48:41.24 into two groups are obedience to God's Law and worship. 00:48:41.27\00:48:48.10 The only difference is that in 00:48:48.13\00:48:49.93 the beginning of human history, you have two 00:48:49.96\00:48:52.64 individuals, whereas at the end of history those two 00:48:52.67\00:48:56.65 individuals have proliferated into two worldwide groups that 00:48:56.68\00:49:03.00 have similar characters to those two original people. 00:49:03.03\00:49:07.35 Jesus himself said that the 00:49:07.38\00:49:09.93 story of The Flood is not only a story, it's a prophecy. 00:49:09.96\00:49:13.33 He said, "As it was in the days of Noah, so also shall 00:49:13.36\00:49:18.63 it be at the coming of the Son of Man. " 00:49:18.66\00:49:20.82 Jesus said, "What happened then is going to happen again 00:49:20.85\00:49:24.17 in relationship with My second coming. " 00:49:24.20\00:49:26.26 And I'm going to have a whole 00:49:26.29\00:49:27.86 lecture on the story of The Flood. 00:49:27.89\00:49:29.72 And I'm going to show you that not only is the wickedness of 00:49:29.75\00:49:33.46 the world in the days of Noah similar to the wickedness 00:49:33.49\00:49:35.84 which will exist at the end of time; not only is the 00:49:35.87\00:49:39.10 destruction of the world in the days of Noah similar to 00:49:39.13\00:49:42.58 the destruction which will take place at the end of time; 00:49:42.61\00:49:44.81 I will show you that there will be a whole pattern of 00:49:44.84\00:49:48.83 sequential events which will be fulfilled in the exact way 00:49:48.86\00:49:53.44 in which they took place in the Old Testament. 00:49:53.47\00:49:55.61 You have also the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:49:55.64\00:49:58.80 Very interesting story. Do you know that Jesus also 00:49:58.83\00:50:02.06 said that story was a prophecy? 00:50:02.09\00:50:03.95 He says in Luke Chapter 17, 00:50:03.98\00:50:06.47 notice - let's go there and read this passage. 00:50:06.50\00:50:08.98 Luke Chapter 17 and verses 28 to 32. 00:50:09.01\00:50:13.61 Luke 17:28 to 32. 00:50:13.64\00:50:16.59 Here Jesus is speaking and He says this... 00:50:16.62\00:50:21.15 Allow me to give you just a 00:50:53.15\00:50:54.54 little bit of an inkling what we're going to deal with what 00:50:54.57\00:50:56.09 we're going to deal with when we talk about Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:50:56.12\00:50:58.85 Do you know that before the cities were destroyed, God 00:50:58.88\00:51:02.91 sent three angels with a warning for those cities? 00:51:02.94\00:51:08.09 In the book of Revelation, we 00:51:08.12\00:51:10.62 find that before the destruction of the world, God 00:51:10.65\00:51:13.68 is going to send three angels to warn the world. 00:51:13.71\00:51:18.21 And somebody might say, Well, Pastor, that's just 00:51:18.24\00:51:20.90 an accident. That's a coincidence. 00:51:20.93\00:51:23.17 We're going to notice that it is not a coincidence. 00:51:23.20\00:51:26.30 You see, the three angels that came to Abraham and then two 00:51:26.33\00:51:29.83 of them went to Sodom and to Gomorrah, actually are 00:51:29.86\00:51:33.23 symbolic of the messages which will be presented by 00:51:33.26\00:51:35.94 these angels of Revelation Chapter 14. 00:51:35.97\00:51:40.28 Actually, the call of Abraham 00:51:40.31\00:51:42.36 out of the place where the Tower of Babel was built is 00:51:42.39\00:51:46.22 fulfilled in Revelation 18, where there is a message given 00:51:46.25\00:51:50.43 to God's people: "Come out of Babylon, My people, and do not 00:51:50.46\00:51:55.36 participate in her sins that you receive not her plagues. " 00:51:55.39\00:51:59.09 The call of Abraham out of 00:51:59.12\00:52:00.68 Babylon foreshadows or symbolizes the final call of 00:52:00.71\00:52:04.58 God's people out of Spiritual Babylon at the end of time. 00:52:04.61\00:52:09.36 The story of the conflict between Isaac and Ishmael 00:52:09.39\00:52:12.87 actually is taken by the Apostle Paul in Galatians 00:52:12.90\00:52:16.70 Chapter 4, and he says that this represents two different 00:52:16.73\00:52:20.07 kinds of people, those who live according to the flesh 00:52:20.10\00:52:23.65 and those who live according to the Spirit. 00:52:23.68\00:52:26.31 In other words, these two sons of Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael, 00:52:26.34\00:52:32.64 represent two different kinds of characters of people that 00:52:32.67\00:52:36.73 will live in this world at the end of time. 00:52:36.76\00:52:39.18 Those who live according to 00:52:39.21\00:52:40.69 the flesh and those who live according to the Spirit. 00:52:40.72\00:52:43.65 And we're going to notice in this story that we have the 00:52:43.68\00:52:48.31 description of the origin of the conflict that exists today 00:52:48.34\00:52:53.55 between Israel and the Palestinians. 00:52:53.58\00:52:57.06 We're going to deal with that issue in prophecy, with Israel 00:52:57.09\00:52:59.93 in Bible prophecy, with the Arabs in Bible prophecy, 00:52:59.96\00:53:03.22 because that is - the origin of this controversy is back 00:53:03.25\00:53:07.19 when Abraham had Isaac and Ishmael. 00:53:07.22\00:53:10.73 Since the days of Abraham, 00:53:10.76\00:53:13.00 they have been at each other's throats. 00:53:13.03\00:53:15.13 This isn't something new. It's something which has 00:53:15.16\00:53:18.90 existed all throughout the course of human history. 00:53:18.93\00:53:23.02 Who could forget the story of the almost sacrifice of Isaac? 00:53:23.05\00:53:28.14 I say "almost" because Isaac was not sacrificed. 00:53:28.17\00:53:31.90 I mean, that story is so 00:53:31.93\00:53:33.23 clearly pointing to the Messiah that, you know, I 00:53:33.26\00:53:37.32 don't even have to dwell on it very much. 00:53:37.35\00:53:39.30 You know, God told Abraham, 00:53:39.33\00:53:40.95 "Take your son to Mount Moriah and sacrifice him there. " 00:53:40.98\00:53:44.69 And when Abraham is about to 00:53:44.72\00:53:45.96 sacrifice his son, the voice says, "Don't sacrifice your 00:53:45.99\00:53:50.41 son," and Abraham finds a ram, which is a male lamb. 00:53:50.44\00:53:55.92 He finds a ram in a thicket 00:53:55.95\00:53:57.73 and he offers the ram in place of his son. 00:53:57.76\00:54:00.85 Do you know that that represents the fact that God 00:54:00.88\00:54:03.53 the Father sent His Son Jesus to this world? 00:54:03.56\00:54:06.28 And He sent Him to take our place. 00:54:06.31\00:54:09.76 He sent him as a Lamb of God 00:54:09.79\00:54:11.63 who takes away the sin of the world. 00:54:11.66\00:54:13.59 And there's a whole series of parallels between the story 00:54:13.62\00:54:16.61 that took place in the days of Abraham and the story of the 00:54:16.64\00:54:21.73 ministration of Christ on this earth. 00:54:21.76\00:54:23.65 Who could forget the story of what is called Jacob's Ladder? 00:54:23.68\00:54:26.81 By the way it's not Jacob's Ladder... 00:54:26.84\00:54:27.99 it's the Lord's Ladder. 00:54:28.02\00:54:29.37 In Genesis Chapter 28 it speaks about a ladder that is 00:54:29.40\00:54:33.01 planted on the earth whose top reached to the highest heaven 00:54:33.04\00:54:36.18 and angels were ascending and descending upon the ladder. 00:54:36.21\00:54:39.52 What could that mean? Well, we don't have to guess. 00:54:39.55\00:54:42.58 Because in John Chapter 1 and verse 51 Jesus says, "You will 00:54:42.61\00:54:46.63 see heaven open and you will see the angels ascending and 00:54:46.66\00:54:51.03 descending upon the Son of Man. " 00:54:51.06\00:54:53.37 In other words, the ladder represents Jesus Christ. 00:54:53.40\00:54:57.92 The bottom of the ladder represents His humanity, His 00:54:57.95\00:55:02.71 oneness with us. The top of the ladder 00:55:02.74\00:55:05.33 represents the fact that He's God. 00:55:05.36\00:55:07.07 It represents His divinity or His deity. 00:55:07.10\00:55:09.66 In other words, the only one who can represent us before 00:55:09.69\00:55:13.46 God is one who is Man with man, and God with God. 00:55:13.49\00:55:18.29 He's the only one who can bridge Heaven and Earth. 00:55:18.32\00:55:21.87 So, Jesus himself said, "I am the Ladder. " 00:55:21.90\00:55:25.14 The ladder of Genesis 28 is really a prophecy. 00:55:25.17\00:55:29.41 It is not only a story. 00:55:29.44\00:55:31.46 Who could forget the story of Jacob and Esau? 00:55:31.49\00:55:34.86 This is a symbolic story. In fact, at the very end of 00:55:34.89\00:55:38.88 the story, we find Jacob returning to his home after 00:55:38.91\00:55:41.91 he's gone into exile from his home because of sin like Adam 00:55:41.94\00:55:44.74 and Eve were cast out because of their sin. 00:55:44.77\00:55:47.07 And now he's returning home and he hears that his brother 00:55:47.10\00:55:49.72 is coming after him to destroy him. 00:55:49.75\00:55:51.92 And Jacob goes through what is 00:55:51.95\00:55:55.17 known as the "Time of Jacob's Trouble. " 00:55:55.20\00:55:59.31 He's in anxiety because he's 00:55:59.34\00:56:02.05 afraid that his brother is going to destroy him! 00:56:02.08\00:56:04.26 Do you know that the Bible says that shortly before the 00:56:04.29\00:56:09.05 Coming of Jesus, God's people will go through a period which 00:56:09.08\00:56:12.73 is known as the "Time of Jacob's Trouble"? 00:56:12.76\00:56:15.62 They will have a similar 00:56:15.65\00:56:16.63 experience to the experience that Jacob had. 00:56:16.66\00:56:19.23 It's mentioned, for example, 00:56:19.26\00:56:21.84 in Daniel Chapter 12 and verse 1 where it says, "At that time 00:56:21.87\00:56:25.54 Michael shall stand up, that great prince that stands watch 00:56:25.57\00:56:28.89 over your people, and there will be a time of trouble 00:56:28.92\00:56:32.38 such as never was since there was a nation. " 00:56:32.41\00:56:34.65 See, that's the time of Time of Jacob's Trouble. 00:56:34.68\00:56:36.32 But at that time God' people 00:56:36.35\00:56:38.61 will be delivered, every one who is written in the Book. 00:56:38.64\00:56:41.74 The story of Joseph is a symbolic story. 00:56:41.77\00:56:45.96 Joseph is sold by his brothers for a few pieces of silver. 00:56:45.99\00:56:50.00 Jesus was sold by his own 00:56:50.03\00:56:51.91 brothers by 30 pieces of silver. 00:56:51.94\00:56:54.81 If you want to understand the 00:56:54.84\00:56:57.32 144,000 of Revelation Chapter 7, once again, you have to go 00:56:57.35\00:57:01.42 back to the book of Genesis, Genesis 49. 00:57:01.45\00:57:04.12 There Jacob, before his death, 00:57:04.15\00:57:06.58 gives a description of character of each one of his 00:57:06.61\00:57:09.54 sons, and they form the foundation for us 00:57:09.57\00:57:12.94 understanding the characters, the 12 personality profiles 00:57:12.97\00:57:17.18 that will exist at the end of time. 00:57:17.21\00:57:19.54 The book of Genesis is a prophetic book. 00:57:19.57\00:57:23.01 It has a much deeper dimension 00:57:23.04\00:57:24.97 than mere history, and we're going to try and decipher all 00:57:25.00\00:57:28.67 of those things in this seminar. 00:57:28.70\00:57:31.09
