What was the role of the temple in Hebrew worship? 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.20 Today we'll be talking about that on 00:00:04.23\00:00:05.59 "Back to our Roots." 00:00:05.62\00:00:06.65 Join us. 00:00:06.68\00:00:08.01 Hello and welcome once again to 00:00:27.38\00:00:29.24 "Back to our Roots." 00:00:29.27\00:00:30.38 I'm your host Alex Schlusser and this is my co host-- 00:00:30.41\00:00:33.12 Rachel Hyman. 00:00:33.15\00:00:34.18 And we're so happy 00:00:34.21\00:00:35.24 that you've chosen to join us today. 00:00:35.27\00:00:37.66 Today we're going to be talking about the temple. 00:00:37.69\00:00:42.30 Now I am not talking about the one 00:00:42.33\00:00:44.64 that's down the corner, 00:00:44.67\00:00:46.23 that as you would go worship on Sabbath. 00:00:46.26\00:00:49.20 We're talking about "The Temple", 00:00:49.23\00:00:51.60 the temple that existed not only in the time of Jesus 00:00:51.63\00:00:55.14 but even going back to that at the time of David 00:00:55.17\00:00:58.32 and even going back beyond that to the time of Moses, 00:00:58.35\00:01:02.00 that was called the Tabernacle in the Wilderness 00:01:02.03\00:01:03.96 or in Hebrew the Mishkan. 00:01:03.99\00:01:06.07 So we want to begin by trying to understand, Rachel. 00:01:06.10\00:01:11.97 What the role of the temple was in that period of time. 00:01:12.00\00:01:16.93 And the simple answer to that, 00:01:16.96\00:01:20.41 it was a place that housed the altar. 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.76 It was a place where the children of Israel 00:01:23.79\00:01:26.76 could come worship. 00:01:26.79\00:01:28.23 But you know another really interesting thing is that 00:01:28.26\00:01:31.35 when we talk in terms 00:01:31.38\00:01:32.55 of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness 00:01:32.58\00:01:34.20 especially God had placed that 00:01:34.23\00:01:36.93 right in the crossroads of the known world, 00:01:36.96\00:01:39.85 so that as all the caravans would travel 00:01:39.88\00:01:42.69 back and forth carrying their goods and everything, 00:01:42.72\00:01:45.04 they would come by. 00:01:45.07\00:01:46.24 Can you imagine what it must have been 00:01:46.27\00:01:48.52 to see the camp of the Hebrews 00:01:48.55\00:01:50.27 with millions of people encamped around the tabernacle 00:01:50.30\00:01:53.80 and the pillar of smoke by day and the fire by night, 00:01:53.83\00:01:57.16 how it must have drawn people. 00:01:57.19\00:01:59.35 It was the ultimate evangelistic campaign going on, 00:01:59.38\00:02:03.05 produced by God and God alone, amen. 00:02:03.08\00:02:05.81 I want to invite our resident scholar Alexander Bolotnikov, 00:02:05.84\00:02:12.18 Sasha, Dr, Alexander. 00:02:12.21\00:02:15.14 How are you, Rachel, today? 00:02:15.17\00:02:16.92 I am fine, good. How are you Alex? 00:02:16.95\00:02:18.40 I am good, Sasha. How are you doing? 00:02:18.43\00:02:19.95 Very good. 00:02:19.98\00:02:21.16 Good, we're going to once again talk about 00:02:21.19\00:02:23.67 one of those subjects that 00:02:23.70\00:02:24.73 I know you have so much to say. 00:02:24.76\00:02:27.27 We're gonna try and keep a leash on you today. 00:02:27.30\00:02:30.17 So it doesn't get out of control 00:02:30.20\00:02:31.66 but I know you just it's overflowing. 00:02:31.69\00:02:36.15 The temple, the sanctuary whatever we want to call it 00:02:36.18\00:02:41.43 and you can correct anything 00:02:41.46\00:02:42.56 that I say wrong at this point, okay. 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.16 So I opened up by saying 00:02:45.19\00:02:46.61 that the primary role of this house 00:02:46.64\00:02:49.66 of this tabernacle both in the wilderness 00:02:49.69\00:02:53.33 and as we move forward in history 00:02:53.36\00:02:54.86 to a brick and mortar to an established place 00:02:54.89\00:02:59.17 was really to house the altar of sacrifice. 00:02:59.20\00:03:02.23 Yeah absolutely, 00:03:02.26\00:03:04.35 in fact according to Deuteronomy Chapter 12, 00:03:04.38\00:03:09.81 this is the only place to conduct sacrificial service 00:03:09.84\00:03:17.49 which typified the plan of salvation 00:03:17.52\00:03:22.20 and redemption through the sacrifice of Jesus 00:03:22.23\00:03:26.20 the Calvary. 00:03:26.23\00:03:27.26 So God had told through Moses I guess 00:03:27.29\00:03:31.57 that there was no other place 00:03:31.60\00:03:33.53 that they could bring their offerings, 00:03:33.56\00:03:35.35 their sacrifice. 00:03:35.38\00:03:36.51 Absolutely and there is another very important aspect. 00:03:36.54\00:03:42.01 Temple was the place of ritual service 00:03:42.04\00:03:45.87 but was not a place for worship. 00:03:45.90\00:03:49.94 Because there was no place for worship at the temple 00:03:49.97\00:03:54.62 it was like the altar-- 00:03:54.65\00:03:56.49 So that brings in and I ask you a question 00:03:56.52\00:03:58.97 that I am sure will throw a lot of people 00:03:59.00\00:04:01.31 because you know that in many places 00:04:01.34\00:04:03.49 the place where people worship the part of the building 00:04:03.52\00:04:08.97 where people work it's typically called what? 00:04:09.00\00:04:11.89 The sanctuary, that's as a least number. 00:04:11.92\00:04:14.44 Yeah, because as you're saying the sanctuary, 00:04:14.47\00:04:18.07 the place where God's presence 00:04:18.10\00:04:20.21 throughout the place where offerings took place 00:04:20.24\00:04:22.92 really was not for public worship at all. 00:04:22.95\00:04:26.05 Absolutely. Where did they worship? 00:04:26.08\00:04:28.05 Well, it's a very interesting question 00:04:28.08\00:04:34.41 they worship God on every Sabbath at Levitical towns, 00:04:34.44\00:04:40.44 Levi, yeah Levites, 00:04:40.47\00:04:42.95 remember the tribe of Levi was not settled in one place, 00:04:42.98\00:04:47.93 they were scattered in towns close to proximity 00:04:47.96\00:04:51.93 where people live and Levites were supposed to go, 00:04:51.96\00:04:55.66 teach them the word of God 00:04:55.69\00:04:57.55 and that was on the weekly basis 00:04:57.58\00:04:59.81 and that's what people would come in and do 00:04:59.84\00:05:02.64 and only two occasions 00:05:02.67\00:05:06.19 where people would go to the temple. 00:05:06.22\00:05:08.18 One occasion somebody committed a serious sin, 00:05:08.21\00:05:12.16 they will have to bring a sin offering 00:05:12.19\00:05:14.93 and in other occasion is the pilgrimage 00:05:14.96\00:05:17.12 three times a year they would go 00:05:17.15\00:05:20.60 during Passover during Shavuot, 00:05:20.63\00:05:23.13 Pentecost and during Sukkot. 00:05:23.16\00:05:25.38 They would go specifically to the temple 00:05:25.41\00:05:27.93 where the glory of God resided and what did they do then, 00:05:27.96\00:05:33.83 they did you know if we call it a worship or wasn't, 00:05:33.86\00:05:38.85 it was more of a barbeque party. 00:05:38.88\00:05:42.20 Well, they would-- Interesting. 00:05:42.23\00:05:43.79 Yeah they would take a peace offering, 00:05:43.82\00:05:45.95 you know unlike a sin offering 00:05:45.98\00:05:47.76 which was eating by the priest, 00:05:47.79\00:05:49.82 peace offering you give only the right shoulder 00:05:49.85\00:05:55.26 to the priest and breast 00:05:55.29\00:05:57.18 and the rest you take for your family 00:05:57.21\00:06:00.17 and by the way you invite friends, 00:06:00.20\00:06:02.03 because it has to be eaten right way, 00:06:02.06\00:06:03.85 so they would camp around in the little villages around, 00:06:03.88\00:06:08.52 you know like-- 00:06:08.55\00:06:09.58 Was it really like a party I mean are you joking? 00:06:09.61\00:06:11.69 Well, not a party-- 00:06:11.72\00:06:13.70 Now the scripture does say that you want to celebrate. 00:06:13.73\00:06:16.70 Okay. Well, they celebrate. 00:06:16.73\00:06:18.54 Remember the description of Samuel 00:06:18.57\00:06:22.24 when he was doing peace offering 00:06:22.27\00:06:25.65 and soul wondering and how Samuel anointed him, 00:06:25.68\00:06:29.84 you know, they are at this meal, 00:06:29.87\00:06:32.49 it was a festive meal they would probably had the bull 00:06:32.52\00:06:36.05 and the entire village was eating 00:06:36.08\00:06:38.10 but that village of Rama was you know 00:06:38.13\00:06:41.03 maybe half a mile from the temple. 00:06:41.06\00:06:43.56 So that's how it was happening 00:06:43.59\00:06:45.94 but that was the only unique place you could do it. 00:06:45.97\00:06:50.04 Don't even dare to do it anywhere else you know. 00:06:50.07\00:06:54.06 So, let me ask you some, 00:06:54.09\00:06:55.13 since we have already said 00:06:55.16\00:06:56.48 that the primary role of the temple 00:06:56.51\00:06:58.68 was to house the altar of sacrifice. 00:06:58.71\00:07:01.30 I know that in passages in the Bible 00:07:01.33\00:07:05.00 before Deuteronomy the message 00:07:05.03\00:07:07.79 the mention of altar of sacrifice comes up, right. 00:07:07.82\00:07:11.57 Oh, yes, oh, yes. 00:07:11.60\00:07:13.19 Well, you first have Abraham mainly, 00:07:13.22\00:07:18.30 Abraham and building altars 00:07:18.33\00:07:21.78 all across the land of Canaan 00:07:21.81\00:07:23.90 through which he wander around, you know in Bethel, 00:07:23.93\00:07:27.91 in Shechem and things like this. 00:07:27.94\00:07:31.50 But then with Moses in Exodus, 00:07:31.53\00:07:36.03 it all took a little different shape 00:07:36.06\00:07:38.81 because through building of a tabernacle, 00:07:38.84\00:07:42.62 you know, it was only altar 00:07:42.65\00:07:44.78 and then the tabernacle was added to it 00:07:44.81\00:07:48.75 which showed another dimension 00:07:48.78\00:07:51.78 of the typological service of plan of salvation. 00:07:51.81\00:07:57.49 Sasha, can you really quickly, 00:07:57.52\00:07:59.84 I know this is deep and broad, 00:07:59.87\00:08:01.96 but real quickly kind of start us 00:08:01.99\00:08:04.44 from outside in the courtyard 00:08:04.47\00:08:08.24 and walk us in what someone would see 00:08:08.27\00:08:10.49 as they move from the opening of the court 00:08:10.52\00:08:12.78 to the altar of sacrifice and so on. 00:08:12.81\00:08:15.21 Can you just, I know that's a lot 00:08:15.24\00:08:16.96 but let's kind of just do it briefly. 00:08:16.99\00:08:19.37 You enter there is a little area 00:08:19.40\00:08:23.09 and that's straight away is your brazen altar. 00:08:23.12\00:08:26.06 That's when the sinner brings the sin offering 00:08:26.09\00:08:30.90 and then beyond this brazen altar 00:08:30.93\00:08:34.13 a regular Israelite cannot go in 00:08:34.16\00:08:37.04 so beyond this altar you walk, 00:08:37.07\00:08:41.12 you can pass the lever 00:08:41.15\00:08:42.58 that's where the priest would wash, 00:08:42.61\00:08:45.25 have ritual washing. 00:08:45.28\00:08:46.36 So it's a big ball of fire. Yes, yes. 00:08:46.39\00:08:48.76 And then you hit what's-- 00:08:48.79\00:08:51.45 during Moses was a tabernacle, 00:08:51.48\00:08:54.06 during Solomon it was that temple building. 00:08:54.09\00:08:58.23 That everyone is familiar with the pictures. 00:08:58.26\00:08:59.85 Yes, so you walk through the door, 00:08:59.88\00:09:03.62 you end up in the holy compartment 00:09:03.65\00:09:07.79 which has on the left seven candled menorah. 00:09:07.82\00:09:11.85 Right. 00:09:11.88\00:09:12.91 On the right the table for the twelve breads 00:09:12.94\00:09:17.07 known in English as the showbread. 00:09:17.10\00:09:19.60 And then right at the end in front 00:09:19.63\00:09:23.67 there was a veil that separates the holy of holy, 00:09:23.70\00:09:28.63 holies and in front of it 00:09:28.66\00:09:31.27 it's small golden altar of incense. 00:09:31.30\00:09:35.46 Then only once a year the high priest 00:09:35.49\00:09:38.93 walks into the most holy 00:09:38.96\00:09:41.03 in which there is the Ark of the Covenant 00:09:41.06\00:09:44.51 inside the Ark tablets with Ten commandments 00:09:44.54\00:09:49.35 and besides the Ark there is the Torah scroll. 00:09:49.38\00:09:53.55 Right, right. 00:09:53.58\00:09:55.87 The average priest could they enter 00:09:55.90\00:10:00.89 into the first compartment of the sanctuary? 00:10:00.92\00:10:04.82 When the priest is on duty, 00:10:04.85\00:10:07.65 doing the daily service and the daily service includes 00:10:07.68\00:10:12.67 administration of the burn 00:10:12.70\00:10:14.52 offering of the lamps evening and morning. 00:10:14.55\00:10:18.04 Then he needed to keep up the flame 00:10:18.07\00:10:22.60 on the menorah and he needed to put the incense 00:10:22.63\00:10:27.34 at the altar of incense. 00:10:27.37\00:10:30.29 That's regular priest does. 00:10:30.32\00:10:32.97 Weekly service includes removing 00:10:33.00\00:10:35.72 and eating the bread from the table of the showbread 00:10:35.75\00:10:41.03 and also putting the new bread, that's on every Shabbat. 00:10:41.06\00:10:46.23 Interesting, interesting. 00:10:46.26\00:10:47.65 Moses is commanded by God to build a sanctuary 00:10:47.68\00:10:53.88 and he says a place that I might dwell 00:10:53.91\00:10:56.07 amongst my people, right. 00:10:56.10\00:10:57.42 Oh yeah, 00:10:57.45\00:10:58.48 that's a very important statement 00:10:58.51\00:11:00.36 and you even have Mishkan, Mishkan to dwell. 00:11:00.39\00:11:06.33 Well, dwell doesn't carry this interesting connotation. 00:11:06.36\00:11:11.25 This root, trilateral Hebrew verbal root shakan 00:11:11.28\00:11:16.96 it means to neighbor-- 00:11:16.99\00:11:19.33 To neighbor. Yeah, you first avoid. 00:11:19.36\00:11:23.64 So God says to Moses, 00:11:23.67\00:11:24.93 build me a tabernacle that I might neighbor with you. 00:11:24.96\00:11:28.40 Yeah, exactly that what it all, God wants-- 00:11:28.43\00:11:30.28 That I can live with you-- 00:11:30.31\00:11:31.70 God wants to be our neighbor 00:11:31.73\00:11:33.69 and in fact if you look at the Israeli camp, 00:11:33.72\00:11:38.49 they had a tents and God had tent then they-- 00:11:38.52\00:11:42.12 He had a big one. 00:11:42.15\00:11:43.73 Well, yeah, but it was still a tent. 00:11:43.76\00:11:46.56 But then they would realize, 00:11:46.59\00:11:48.68 hey I build for myself a palace of stone-- 00:11:48.71\00:11:53.63 How can God live in a tent? 00:11:53.66\00:11:55.72 Yes. Yeah. 00:11:55.75\00:11:56.78 So, Moses has this through the command of God. 00:11:56.81\00:12:00.58 Now the verses in the Bible are pretty extensive 00:12:00.61\00:12:06.28 as far as the explanations of 00:12:06.31\00:12:08.02 the what the sanctuary of components were, 00:12:08.05\00:12:12.42 how it was to be built, 00:12:12.45\00:12:13.93 God gives very specific details He doesn't leave anything 00:12:13.96\00:12:16.70 to Moses as imagination and He actually says that 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.82 you know it's a pattern based on what? 00:12:19.85\00:12:22.35 On. 00:12:22.38\00:12:23.61 This is a pattern that is based on the temple in heaven. 00:12:23.64\00:12:27.69 Exactly. 00:12:27.72\00:12:29.05 In particular Psalm 18 speaks very clearly 00:12:29.08\00:12:33.44 that God has, you know, 00:12:33.47\00:12:36.74 the temple in heaven 00:12:36.77\00:12:38.84 and the Book of Revelation is very clear, 00:12:38.87\00:12:41.95 shows throughout that 00:12:41.98\00:12:43.50 John sees different furniture and the-- 00:12:43.53\00:12:47.09 how the ark is there and everything so it's-- 00:12:47.12\00:12:50.71 So you mentioned about David, 00:12:50.74\00:12:54.53 that David realized that he's built himself a house yet 00:12:54.56\00:12:57.26 God is still dwelling in a tent, I am curious. 00:12:57.29\00:13:03.61 Was there a difference in the wall of the Mishkan 00:13:03.64\00:13:07.82 the sanctuary in the wilderness 00:13:07.85\00:13:09.78 versus the wall of the established stone temple 00:13:09.81\00:13:14.15 or was it exactly the same thing. 00:13:14.18\00:13:16.75 The main difference is that the Mishkan 00:13:16.78\00:13:20.94 in the desert the sanctuary, 00:13:20.97\00:13:23.11 the tabernacle was in the midst of the camp. 00:13:23.14\00:13:27.37 So it was in proximated to anybody 00:13:27.40\00:13:31.53 who needed to come to it right away. 00:13:31.56\00:13:34.58 As soon as they move to the land of Israel, 00:13:34.61\00:13:37.18 they got scattered so somebody may live 00:13:37.21\00:13:42.07 50-80 miles away from the a Mishkan 00:13:42.10\00:13:45.75 so it doesn't have, 00:13:45.78\00:13:46.81 that's why I said there was no-- 00:13:46.84\00:13:49.01 it wasn't the place of the worshiping anymore. 00:13:49.04\00:13:51.83 It lost its accessibility to the people. 00:13:51.86\00:13:54.94 Now do you think that could be reason 00:13:54.97\00:13:57.17 why now we see the development of synagogues 00:13:57.20\00:14:02.40 and things like that spread out 00:14:02.43\00:14:04.32 because the people have been removed from that proximity 00:14:04.35\00:14:07.85 or do you think that even in the time of the Mishkan, 00:14:07.88\00:14:10.53 there was something like that going on. 00:14:10.56\00:14:13.95 What happened in the time of Mishkan 00:14:13.98\00:14:18.09 probably known as not necessarily 00:14:18.12\00:14:21.11 but in the time of Israel definitely, 00:14:21.14\00:14:24.28 but we don't know about synagogues 00:14:24.31\00:14:26.90 until the time of Ezra which is 5th-4th century. 00:14:26.93\00:14:32.40 Okay. 00:14:32.43\00:14:33.58 What we know is based on the Book of Deuteronomy 00:14:33.61\00:14:36.98 and based on what we know 00:14:37.01\00:14:39.10 from the Book of Judges and Kings 00:14:39.13\00:14:41.17 that the priest and Levites were supposed to carry out 00:14:41.20\00:14:45.54 the responsibility of teaching the Torah to the people, 00:14:45.57\00:14:50.27 but you mentioned important aspect 00:14:50.30\00:14:53.42 what we have in Ezra, 00:14:53.45\00:14:56.13 we have an example particularly 00:14:56.16\00:14:58.85 in the Book of Nehemiah Chapter 8 00:14:58.88\00:15:00.89 it's recorded how Ezra organized 00:15:00.92\00:15:03.47 the public reading of the Torah 00:15:03.50\00:15:06.92 which was not connected to the temple 00:15:06.95\00:15:10.44 and that is specifically a good illustration 00:15:10.47\00:15:14.70 of how today in Jewish world, 00:15:14.73\00:15:17.79 the temple is absolutely separate from the synagogue, 00:15:17.82\00:15:22.31 because the synagogue is the place 00:15:22.34\00:15:23.96 where the Torah is read, where people study, 00:15:23.99\00:15:26.83 where people learn and the temple 00:15:26.86\00:15:29.85 is where people take care of their sin. 00:15:29.88\00:15:32.86 So let me ask you this question 00:15:32.89\00:15:35.85 and let me make it as a statement 00:15:35.88\00:15:37.23 but kind of as a question though. 00:15:37.26\00:15:39.29 So the participation that one had 00:15:39.32\00:15:42.76 in the sacrificial rituals what, 00:15:42.79\00:15:44.82 centered around the temple, 00:15:44.85\00:15:46.60 was that an indicator of whether someone 00:15:46.63\00:15:48.74 was connected literally to a Jewish community or not, 00:15:48.77\00:15:51.69 or they could be outside of the community, right, 00:15:51.72\00:15:54.73 and participate in temple offerings 00:15:54.76\00:15:57.77 but never be connected to Judaism as a whole. 00:15:57.80\00:16:00.48 Well, when we talk about Judaism 00:16:00.51\00:16:02.90 and we're switching now to a period 00:16:02.93\00:16:05.16 what is known as intertestamental period 00:16:05.19\00:16:08.38 because that's, that's where the difference, 00:16:08.41\00:16:10.14 you know, when-- 00:16:10.17\00:16:11.20 You know and that's the period 00:16:11.23\00:16:12.26 between the Prophet Malachi, right, and the gospels. 00:16:12.29\00:16:17.20 Yeah, first century, that's where the change occurs 00:16:17.23\00:16:20.55 because and again it's all access, 00:16:20.58\00:16:23.20 issue of accessibility. 00:16:23.23\00:16:25.11 You have the desert and the camp, 00:16:25.14\00:16:29.06 everybody can walk through the Mishkan, 00:16:29.09\00:16:32.11 then you have Israel twelve tribes 00:16:32.14\00:16:34.76 or some people live far away, 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.76 then three times a year, 00:16:36.79\00:16:38.57 and then you have somebody living in the diasporas 00:16:38.60\00:16:42.53 somewhere in the today's Spain. 00:16:42.56\00:16:46.42 Can this probably go to the temple 00:16:46.45\00:16:49.61 three times a year, not a chance. 00:16:49.64\00:16:52.54 Many people in when they moved away from Judea, 00:16:52.57\00:16:57.75 they didn't have access to temple. 00:16:57.78\00:16:59.83 And the only thing that connected them 00:16:59.86\00:17:02.92 to the faith was synagogue 00:17:02.95\00:17:05.93 and so synagogue took this more primary role 00:17:05.96\00:17:11.09 and especially it became even more acute 00:17:11.12\00:17:15.61 when you have the Maccabean Wars 00:17:15.64\00:17:20.45 when we talked about 170 BC 00:17:20.48\00:17:23.26 where priest lost credibility 00:17:23.29\00:17:27.34 and the scripture began to be taught by the Pharisees, 00:17:27.37\00:17:31.07 interpreters of the scripture. 00:17:31.10\00:17:33.05 I am curious, Sasha. 00:17:33.08\00:17:35.34 So since we're talking now that the temple 00:17:35.37\00:17:38.78 wasn't so much central to the community, 00:17:38.81\00:17:41.28 it was for the rituals and worship. 00:17:41.31\00:17:42.50 Absolutely no. 00:17:42.53\00:17:43.56 Okay, so certainly we know that 00:17:43.59\00:17:46.04 there are different instances in the gospel narratives 00:17:46.07\00:17:48.95 where we find Jesus at the temple, okay. 00:17:48.98\00:17:52.72 So tell me about that? 00:17:52.75\00:17:55.06 Well, first time in the gospel 00:17:55.09\00:17:56.98 we see Jesus as I say at the temple studying with rabbis 00:17:57.01\00:18:03.76 at the age of 12, that's the age 00:18:03.79\00:18:06.92 when boys prepare for their Bar Mitzvah. 00:18:06.95\00:18:09.36 Right, but I though that the temple really 00:18:09.39\00:18:14.50 was more for worship. 00:18:14.53\00:18:16.91 So where there places around the temple 00:18:16.94\00:18:19.63 or in the vicinity of the temple 00:18:19.66\00:18:20.82 where people would still come together and study. 00:18:20.85\00:18:22.71 Well, we have to talk about Herodian Temple. 00:18:22.74\00:18:25.38 It was much bigger than the temple 00:18:25.41\00:18:28.08 which was originally restored after the Babylonian captivity. 00:18:28.11\00:18:32.14 What Herod did, he made a massive addition 00:18:32.17\00:18:35.66 around the temple, 00:18:35.69\00:18:36.97 he built the wall, he built the square, 00:18:37.00\00:18:39.85 so that whole square known today, 00:18:39.88\00:18:42.60 known even today as a temple mount. 00:18:42.63\00:18:46.32 Now they have mosques, there are stuff like this 00:18:46.35\00:18:48.60 but it's still a temple mount. 00:18:48.63\00:18:50.38 So that's square housed the temple proper 00:18:50.41\00:18:55.23 and it housed all additional buildings. 00:18:55.26\00:18:59.44 So then it would, I guess, Sasha, 00:18:59.47\00:19:01.84 would kind of be like that if you go to a small town 00:19:01.87\00:19:04.78 and in the center is the courthouse, right, 00:19:04.81\00:19:07.40 but if you were to call the whole town the courthouse, 00:19:07.43\00:19:10.67 that's kind of what's happening. 00:19:10.70\00:19:11.75 Exactly. 00:19:11.78\00:19:12.81 So in the proximity of the temple that was it, 00:19:12.84\00:19:15.48 but really for practical reasons, 00:19:15.51\00:19:17.30 Jesus isn't meeting people 00:19:17.33\00:19:19.48 and speaking with people at the temple. 00:19:19.51\00:19:21.15 Oh, absolutely. 00:19:21.18\00:19:22.32 He's in Solomon's portico, he's in these places, 00:19:22.35\00:19:24.65 that are the outskirts around the temple. 00:19:24.68\00:19:26.88 Yes, Solomon's portico was a synagogue, 00:19:26.91\00:19:30.04 was one of the synagogues 00:19:30.07\00:19:31.64 where Pharisees taught 00:19:31.67\00:19:34.43 and that's where people would go. 00:19:34.46\00:19:39.07 Even Jerusalem, it's like apostles. 00:19:39.10\00:19:41.70 They go to the temple to pray. 00:19:41.73\00:19:44.34 So that was the place when Jesus as a boy, 00:19:44.37\00:19:47.80 you know, I must be about my father's business and all, 00:19:47.83\00:19:49.92 He's in that area. 00:19:49.95\00:19:51.57 Yeah, that's where they studied the Torah, 00:19:51.60\00:19:53.55 that's where they have prayers, everything. 00:19:53.58\00:19:56.16 And only, you know, 00:19:56.19\00:19:58.14 we have the mention of the actual sacrificing 00:19:58.17\00:20:02.05 when Paul takes-- he goes with this, know-- 00:20:02.08\00:20:07.14 For the Nazirite vows. 00:20:07.17\00:20:08.20 For the Nazirite vows. 00:20:08.23\00:20:09.36 Then they go into the area 00:20:09.39\00:20:12.74 where the altar is and there was all kinds of troubles. 00:20:12.77\00:20:16.10 This kind of reminds me a little bit, 00:20:16.13\00:20:18.22 I know it's on The Temple but typically today 00:20:18.25\00:20:20.62 wherever there is Jewish synagogues, 00:20:20.65\00:20:22.12 Jews try to build the community around it, 00:20:22.15\00:20:25.93 so they didn't have to drive anymore, 00:20:25.96\00:20:27.43 they just walk. 00:20:27.46\00:20:28.49 And they see the temple today as a place of, 00:20:28.52\00:20:31.19 you know, prayer and worship 00:20:31.22\00:20:32.92 and all of these things. 00:20:32.95\00:20:34.29 And we have to say that in American Judaism 00:20:34.32\00:20:37.96 particularly Reform Judaism, 00:20:37.99\00:20:41.05 they often use the title temple for the synagogue. 00:20:41.08\00:20:46.04 Right, but that's not really biblically correct. 00:20:46.07\00:20:48.73 It's biblically, and they know it's not correct biblically. 00:20:48.76\00:20:51.11 But, but, if you think about it, 00:20:51.14\00:20:52.58 I think their rational to that is, you know, 00:20:52.61\00:20:55.65 because now sacrifice has been substituted 00:20:55.68\00:21:00.07 by prayer and giving, right. 00:21:00.10\00:21:02.15 It's still a temple I guess in their mind. 00:21:02.18\00:21:03.75 So for them that's where they bring their offering. 00:21:03.78\00:21:07.29 In the sense, in Reform Judaism I ask this question, 00:21:07.32\00:21:12.14 I've studied in reform school, 00:21:12.17\00:21:14.17 so I ask this question of why is the temple, 00:21:14.20\00:21:17.14 and they say just to remember the temple so they-- 00:21:17.17\00:21:21.82 And that's a big part of Judaism, 00:21:23.13\00:21:24.95 there is so much of it that's about remembering what was, 00:21:24.98\00:21:27.80 you know, even in the commands of God gifts, 00:21:27.83\00:21:31.12 you know, regarding Passover and many things. 00:21:31.15\00:21:33.07 You know, that you talk about it to your children, 00:21:33.10\00:21:34.93 let them remember and so on. 00:21:34.96\00:21:35.99 But it is interesting that orthodox synagogues 00:21:36.02\00:21:38.92 are not called temple. 00:21:38.95\00:21:41.09 Orthodox synagogues are called shul. 00:21:41.12\00:21:43.39 And in Yiddish shul means school. 00:21:43.42\00:21:46.22 Oh, that's school. 00:21:46.25\00:21:48.00 So I want to talk also about the disciples 00:21:48.03\00:21:53.42 and their role around the temple, 00:21:53.45\00:21:55.08 you know, on the first trip 00:21:55.11\00:21:57.21 that I made to Israel many years ago, 00:21:57.24\00:21:59.68 one of things that they did is they took us around, 00:21:59.71\00:22:02.20 I guess it's to the southern side of the old city 00:22:02.23\00:22:06.83 and the wall there I remember that the doors 00:22:06.86\00:22:10.89 that used to exist, they're long since closed up, 00:22:10.92\00:22:13.58 but there is all the stairs there. 00:22:13.61\00:22:16.12 And it's pretty commonly thought that 00:22:16.15\00:22:18.36 this is the place that Peter preached 00:22:18.39\00:22:21.40 and that the 3,000 people heard and got saved, 00:22:21.43\00:22:27.26 which brings, you know, 00:22:27.29\00:22:28.81 this idea of their role in the temple 00:22:28.84\00:22:36.12 again probably separating the temple itself 00:22:36.15\00:22:39.35 from all the buildings and all the things 00:22:39.38\00:22:41.91 that exist around it. 00:22:41.94\00:22:45.06 Well, the gospels and the Book of Acts 00:22:45.09\00:22:48.98 constantly talk about Jesus 00:22:49.01\00:22:51.30 and disciples going to the temple. 00:22:51.33\00:22:54.44 In fact the Gospel of John is very meticulous in particular 00:22:54.47\00:22:58.83 about Jesus being at the temple 00:22:58.86\00:23:02.79 during every holiday, every holiday, every festival. 00:23:02.82\00:23:06.73 Right, and we have already talked about that 00:23:06.76\00:23:08.36 and when we talked about Sukkot. 00:23:08.39\00:23:09.91 Exactly, but never in scripture 00:23:09.94\00:23:13.97 do we see Jesus even attempting to offer 00:23:14.00\00:23:16.91 sacrifices at the temple. 00:23:16.94\00:23:18.53 Oh, never. 00:23:18.56\00:23:19.59 Yeah, I have often wondered the answer to that. 00:23:19.62\00:23:23.87 That's indicative to the fact that temple 00:23:23.90\00:23:28.21 as a place for sacrifice has lost its significance more 00:23:28.24\00:23:35.45 so it lost its significance 00:23:35.48\00:23:40.01 because the priest were not anymore in the authority. 00:23:40.04\00:23:46.48 And so that's why, you know, 00:23:46.51\00:23:51.33 Judaism focus on the teachers of the Torah 00:23:51.36\00:23:54.68 and while these teachers were around the temple, 00:23:54.71\00:23:57.87 you know, these are Pharisees 00:23:57.90\00:24:00.00 but the Sadducees they were in the temple 00:24:00.03\00:24:03.48 and they were not popular among the people. 00:24:03.51\00:24:07.37 Well, we're gonna-- once again 00:24:07.40\00:24:09.59 we've come to the end of the program. 00:24:09.62\00:24:12.19 You know, I think we need to make this a two hour program, 00:24:12.22\00:24:14.79 right, so we can cover everything but we don't. 00:24:14.82\00:24:16.98 So, Sasha, if you could introduce the song for me, 00:24:17.01\00:24:20.12 I am gonna go sing. 00:24:20.15\00:24:22.02 That's Alex is gonna sing from Psalms 117. 00:24:22.05\00:24:26.76 "Praise the Lord, All The Nations." 00:24:26.79\00:24:29.24 Amen. 00:26:58.45\00:26:59.95 Praise the Lord, all ye nations. 00:26:59.98\00:27:03.29 You know, Rachel,
