You know, I've heard it said that 00:00:01.08\00:00:03.02 "God is finished with the Jews." 00:00:03.05\00:00:06.46 Can I tell you that Paul has some 00:00:06.49\00:00:08.74 very different ideas that he presents us. 00:00:08.77\00:00:11.85 Join us today as we look at Romans 11 00:00:11.88\00:00:15.12 to understand really what Paul said. 00:00:15.15\00:00:17.24 Hello and welcome once again to "Back to our Roots." 00:00:37.44\00:00:40.52 I'm your host Alex, Pastor Alex Schlussler 00:00:40.55\00:00:43.66 and my co-host... Rachel Hyman. 00:00:43.69\00:00:45.74 And we are so happy that you've decided to join us once again. 00:00:45.77\00:00:50.69 We have another very interesting 00:00:50.72\00:00:54.26 if not slightly controversial topic today, 00:00:54.29\00:00:57.49 as we are going to explore a portion of the Book of Romans. 00:00:57.52\00:01:01.82 You know, Paul, he penned this book 00:01:01.85\00:01:04.60 to a congregation of people that were struggling 00:01:04.63\00:01:07.91 with many ideas and many concepts. 00:01:07.94\00:01:10.48 And Paul speaks very succinctly to it. 00:01:10.51\00:01:13.94 You know, there are some who have said, 00:01:13.97\00:01:15.88 that God is finished with the Jews. 00:01:15.91\00:01:18.41 And I think that we're gonna see that Paul, 00:01:18.44\00:01:20.87 the Apostle as some people think to the Gentiles 00:01:20.90\00:01:24.76 has some very strong thoughts about this 00:01:24.79\00:01:26.95 as he expresses it in the Book of Romans. 00:01:26.98\00:01:30.16 Rachel, when you think about Paul 00:01:30.19\00:01:34.45 and maybe in particular the Book of Romans 00:01:34.48\00:01:37.34 you know, he--in so many ways Paul gets negative press. 00:01:37.37\00:01:41.79 But this is the case where if we really look at 00:01:41.82\00:01:43.75 what he is saying, we get a whole different picture. 00:01:43.78\00:01:46.39 Right. 00:01:46.42\00:01:47.87 Have you had any experience 00:01:47.90\00:01:49.25 in talking with people you know-- 00:01:49.28\00:01:51.08 Yeah, I mean, I feel like some groups of people 00:01:51.11\00:01:54.62 that I know would say that, you know, 00:01:54.65\00:01:58.34 Paul is putting the Jews above Gentiles 00:01:58.37\00:02:03.20 and other people would say 00:02:03.23\00:02:04.26 he is putting the Gentiles above the Jews. 00:02:04.29\00:02:06.71 You know, it's very interesting to hear the different opinions 00:02:06.74\00:02:09.56 in the controversy surrounding these texts. 00:02:09.59\00:02:11.56 Right. Right. 00:02:11.59\00:02:12.62 And you know, we really hope that through today's program 00:02:12.65\00:02:15.59 as we explore this that we're gonna be able 00:02:15.62\00:02:18.55 to push past a lot of that 00:02:18.58\00:02:20.20 and really try and understand the beauty, 00:02:20.23\00:02:23.16 truly the beauty of what Paul has to say. 00:02:23.19\00:02:26.04 It's found in Romans in particular chapter 11. 00:02:26.07\00:02:29.13 So at this point I would like to bring out our friend 00:02:29.16\00:02:31.61 Alexander Bolotnikov Sasha. Dr. Alexander. 00:02:31.64\00:02:36.17 The Doctor. To come join us. 00:02:36.20\00:02:39.63 How are you doing, brother? 00:02:39.66\00:02:40.88 I'm doing fine. Good to see you, Alex. 00:02:40.91\00:02:44.67 Looking bright and shining in your yellow shirt today. 00:02:44.70\00:02:48.66 We have a sandwich, with that blue and yellow. 00:02:48.69\00:02:52.66 There you go. So, Sasha-- 00:02:52.69\00:02:55.70 You're the kosher bacon. 00:02:55.73\00:02:58.80 It's the colors of the Ukrainian flag. 00:02:58.83\00:03:03.71 So, Sasha, we have in previous programs 00:03:03.74\00:03:06.94 we have spend some time now exploring Paul, the rabbi Paul. 00:03:06.97\00:03:11.45 We looked at him as we talked about the Book of Acts. 00:03:11.48\00:03:14.60 And now we're going to centre in on a particular part 00:03:14.63\00:03:19.62 of some of the things that he had to say 00:03:19.65\00:03:21.54 as recorded in the Book of Romans primarily. 00:03:21.57\00:03:25.44 Paul opens up, Romans 11 00:03:25.47\00:03:28.58 and he asked a very clear succinct question. 00:03:28.61\00:03:32.63 Paul says without mixing words 00:03:32.66\00:03:34.53 has God rejected the Jews, right? 00:03:34.56\00:03:37.93 And he comes back with a statement 00:03:37.96\00:03:41.61 that makes it very clear God forbid, right? 00:03:41.64\00:03:45.08 Paul had said rhetorical question with the answer no. 00:03:45.11\00:03:48.46 No. The answer is no. 00:03:48.49\00:03:49.89 But then he does something that I find kind of interesting, 00:03:49.92\00:03:53.08 he turns to begin to talk about Elisha... in this passage. 00:03:53.11\00:03:57.00 Yes. Why does he do that? 00:03:57.03\00:03:58.98 And why does he immediately draw 00:03:59.01\00:04:00.95 from Elisha in the context of this? 00:04:00.98\00:04:03.35 Well, it's important to understand 00:04:03.38\00:04:07.25 what Elisha was going through 00:04:07.28\00:04:11.76 when he had this experience on Mount Carmel. 00:04:11.79\00:04:16.59 And this is with the prophets-- 00:04:16.62\00:04:18.12 Exactly, that's-- you know, all of this stress he had 00:04:18.15\00:04:24.51 when he challenged 400 prophets of Baal. 00:04:24.54\00:04:31.58 If their god is right, if their god could answer 00:04:31.61\00:04:35.59 and then he had to ask to pour water around his altar 00:04:35.62\00:04:41.18 after their god fails to answer 00:04:41.21\00:04:45.24 and then God sent the fire and he was so, so happy 00:04:45.27\00:04:52.52 that God--that he fulfilled the mission 00:04:52.55\00:04:55.57 he--he hoped that he convinced all Israel 00:04:55.60\00:05:00.32 and Jezebel is-- after that decided to kill him. 00:05:00.35\00:05:05.17 He wasn't afraid of death. 00:05:05.20\00:05:06.99 He was so, so disappointed and distraught 00:05:07.02\00:05:10.99 that he ran away he said, I quit, I can't stand. 00:05:11.02\00:05:15.35 That he thought that with the-- 00:05:15.38\00:05:16.76 this manifestation of power that God had displayed 00:05:16.79\00:05:21.21 that the people would instantly turn and say, oh, you know. 00:05:21.24\00:05:25.64 And so God had-- he went all the way up 00:05:25.67\00:05:28.87 to the Mount Sinai where Moses was. 00:05:28.90\00:05:31.74 And God had a talk with him over there. 00:05:31.77\00:05:35.69 And first He said, Elisha you are wrong. 00:05:35.72\00:05:40.32 There are 7000 people in that upper state 00:05:40.35\00:05:45.46 northern kingdom of Israel that did not worship Baal. 00:05:45.49\00:05:49.44 Right, that still follow the living God. 00:05:49.47\00:05:51.77 And you now, sorry, Sasha, but listen, that is even today, 00:05:51.80\00:05:57.53 sometimes we feel like we're all alone, 00:05:57.56\00:06:00.90 are we the only ones that believe 00:06:00.93\00:06:04.05 in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob 00:06:04.08\00:06:06.01 that worshiped in the right way 00:06:06.04\00:06:07.30 but God there says to Elisha and I think He says to us, 00:06:07.33\00:06:10.85 look, I always have my faithful. 00:06:10.88\00:06:13.97 Even if you don't see them. Right. 00:06:14.00\00:06:15.68 Well, what we need to really look into many people-- 00:06:15.71\00:06:21.15 why Paul brings it up because even that early many Gentiles, 00:06:21.18\00:06:27.18 many non Jews were disappointed, they're like, 00:06:27.21\00:06:30.83 they go to the synagogue 00:06:30.86\00:06:33.17 and try to talk to Jews about Jesus 00:06:33.20\00:06:36.97 showing them the Scriptures and don't get a response. 00:06:37.00\00:06:41.28 So people get upset and then you say, 00:06:41.31\00:06:43.81 Oh, Jews rejected Jesus and so what we see is similarity, 00:06:43.84\00:06:49.11 yes, similar to the fact that 00:06:49.14\00:06:51.88 there was a fire from heaven so convincing, 00:06:51.91\00:06:54.89 the miracles Jesus preformed were extremely convincing 00:06:54.92\00:06:59.56 and not, you know, there were people-- 00:06:59.59\00:07:03.10 there were Pharisees, there were priests 00:07:03.13\00:07:05.03 who rejected them no matter what. 00:07:05.06\00:07:06.85 Lazarus was raised from the dead 00:07:06.88\00:07:11.20 and after that priest decided to kill Jesus as the reaction. 00:07:11.23\00:07:17.63 So what can somebody make 00:07:17.66\00:07:20.59 as a conclusion all Jews rejected Jesus. 00:07:20.62\00:07:23.43 In Psalm. In Psalm. 00:07:23.46\00:07:24.66 Brings the idea the same way as with Elijah not everyone 00:07:24.69\00:07:31.40 in kingdom of Israel went after Jezebel. 00:07:31.43\00:07:35.88 Not everyone in Judea rejected Jesus. 00:07:35.91\00:07:40.00 How many people followed Jesus? 00:07:40.03\00:07:41.91 How many people listen to His sermons? 00:07:41.94\00:07:44.19 How many people accepted? 3000 during the Acts 2. 00:07:44.22\00:07:48.62 Then 5000 more. 00:07:48.65\00:07:50.08 But we don't even know how, 00:07:50.11\00:07:51.84 how many even prior to the Book of Acts, 00:07:51.87\00:07:54.62 how many really were following Him. 00:07:54.65\00:07:56.70 Oh, definitely. Had received Him. 00:07:56.73\00:07:58.41 I've heard you now, and I would expect 00:07:58.44\00:08:00.80 that there was tens of thousands of people 00:08:00.83\00:08:02.71 that believed that Jesus was the promised one. 00:08:02.74\00:08:06.39 Oh, absolutely. 00:08:06.42\00:08:07.59 You look what we have-- we have a distribution. 00:08:07.62\00:08:11.39 And today, even we're talking about 00:08:11.42\00:08:13.87 some places that are easier 00:08:13.90\00:08:16.03 receiving the gospel easier than the other. 00:08:16.06\00:08:19.01 In that time in the land of Israel 00:08:19.04\00:08:22.25 Galileans received, were more receptive than Jerusalem might. 00:08:22.28\00:08:27.80 So, Paul sets this up and presents 00:08:27.83\00:08:33.14 this convincing argument just as Elisha 00:08:33.17\00:08:35.58 look, there's always been God's faithful. 00:08:35.61\00:08:39.57 Don't think that because some rejected that all rejected. 00:08:39.60\00:08:43.80 But then he changes in the same chapter 11 00:08:43.83\00:08:48.57 in verse 11, listen to what he says. 00:08:48.60\00:08:51.58 So I ask you did they-- they being the Jewish people, 00:08:51.61\00:08:55.15 did they stumble in order that they might fall. 00:08:55.18\00:08:58.25 Okay, so he is saying first of all, 00:08:58.28\00:09:00.91 was it just that they tripped and fell 00:09:00.94\00:09:03.13 just for the sake of fallen on their face. 00:09:03.16\00:09:05.40 Okay, and he comes back again a rhetorical question, 00:09:05.43\00:09:08.73 and he says by no means rather through their 00:09:08.76\00:09:12.03 trespasses salvation has come to the nations, 00:09:12.06\00:09:15.85 to the Gentiles, right? 00:09:15.88\00:09:17.83 So as to make Israel jealous. 00:09:17.86\00:09:21.61 So I always love this because Paul is saying, 00:09:21.64\00:09:24.49 look, yeah, a bunch of them fell, 00:09:24.52\00:09:27.17 a bunch of them didn't get it and stumbled, all right. 00:09:27.20\00:09:31.15 But was it just for the sake of stumbling. 00:09:31.18\00:09:33.29 No, of course not, because the fact that they stumbled, 00:09:33.32\00:09:37.20 it opened up the door for the nations, 00:09:37.23\00:09:39.15 for the Gentiles to begin to receive the gospel. 00:09:39.18\00:09:42.45 But he doesn't stop there, does he, Sasha? 00:09:42.48\00:09:44.80 He says look, the reason why the Gentiles have received 00:09:44.83\00:09:49.86 the gospel is so that it will make Israel jealous. Okay. 00:09:49.89\00:09:55.49 Well, I said that they will come back 00:09:55.52\00:09:57.58 to their Heavenly Father. 00:09:57.61\00:09:59.11 And that's what happens. 00:09:59.14\00:10:00.17 I was jealous when I saw in the Christians 00:10:00.20\00:10:02.66 and-- and that's what converted my soul 00:10:02.69\00:10:05.24 because it made me curious. 00:10:05.27\00:10:06.74 Yeah, absolutely for me it was the same experience seeing-- 00:10:06.77\00:10:09.89 seeing my stepfather presenting Christianity in a way 00:10:09.92\00:10:16.35 that I had never seen it before 00:10:16.38\00:10:17.50 living as a Godly Christ like man, 00:10:17.53\00:10:19.78 provoke me to jealousy to want to-- 00:10:19.81\00:10:21.42 Is that awesome. 00:10:21.45\00:10:22.48 What is it that he has? It's holy jealous. 00:10:22.51\00:10:24.13 I want to have the same thing, right? 00:10:24.16\00:10:26.62 It was interesting that I-- in my experience 00:10:26.65\00:10:30.00 although when I was 18, 19, 20 00:10:30.03\00:10:33.72 I was going to the synagogue to, 00:10:33.75\00:10:36.92 you know, to Orthodox synagogue. 00:10:36.95\00:10:40.71 I wasn't really like keeping 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.73 the Sabbath or something like this. 00:10:42.76\00:10:44.74 He was my Christian friend who was challenging me 00:10:44.77\00:10:49.63 on the matter of salvation that pushed me to take 00:10:49.66\00:10:53.36 Sabbath more seriously than I was doing. 00:10:53.39\00:10:56.33 Oh, you know, the irony for me 00:10:56.36\00:10:57.88 and I don't want to upset anyone 00:10:57.91\00:10:59.68 but look, the truth is that 00:10:59.71\00:11:01.51 I became if you can understand this-- 00:11:01.54\00:11:03.33 a far better Jew once I accepted Jesus. Amen. 00:11:03.36\00:11:07.20 Because you know, as an adult even though being Jewish 00:11:07.23\00:11:11.32 before I came to Him, my Judaism was something cultural, 00:11:11.35\00:11:15.21 was something that was relegated back to second class, 00:11:15.24\00:11:18.39 had no real meaning but once I accepted the Jewish Messiah 00:11:18.42\00:11:23.23 and started wanting to live for Him 00:11:23.26\00:11:25.00 and starting to study wanting to serve Him 00:11:25.03\00:11:28.43 the more I did, the more my Jewishness 00:11:28.46\00:11:31.36 started to move forward. Came alive. 00:11:31.39\00:11:32.64 Well, and it's because to me they were inseparable, 00:11:32.67\00:11:36.91 which by the way is really the driving force 00:11:36.94\00:11:38.97 behind this program? Right. 00:11:39.00\00:11:41.44 Is that the roots are Hebrew, which brings us to 00:11:41.47\00:11:45.39 the next important part of this discussion, "The Root." 00:11:45.42\00:11:49.27 Paul presents a new analogy, right? 00:11:49.30\00:11:53.74 He starts talking to the non-Jewish believers. 00:11:53.77\00:11:58.49 And he presents an interesting analogy to them. 00:11:58.52\00:12:02.82 Yeah, he talks about the root. 00:12:02.85\00:12:04.77 And we have to even look a little bit wider 00:12:04.80\00:12:08.60 into the whole context, into the entire context of Romans. 00:12:08.63\00:12:12.65 These Romans run several themes and the theme of Israel, 00:12:12.68\00:12:17.53 the theme of Jewish people does not appear 00:12:17.56\00:12:20.39 first in Romans 11 for the first time. 00:12:20.42\00:12:23.69 First time, it starts in Romans Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. 00:12:23.72\00:12:29.33 The biggest misconception that is--that is present today 00:12:29.36\00:12:34.85 is the fact that after Jews rejected "Jesus" 00:12:34.88\00:12:41.76 they lost their status of being chosen. 00:12:41.79\00:12:45.53 And when I see, when I hear these statements 00:12:45.56\00:12:49.24 I always ask, explain to me what is chosen. 00:12:49.27\00:12:52.99 And people start giving their absolutely wrong understandings 00:12:53.02\00:12:57.26 thinking that chosen's being some so kind of a higher race. 00:12:57.29\00:13:01.66 Well, this is absolutely incorrect, 00:13:01.69\00:13:03.97 God never had any favoritism 00:13:04.00\00:13:07.49 just for somebody's ethnicity or race or culture. 00:13:07.52\00:13:12.48 God have a special purpose when He raised the people of Israel. 00:13:12.51\00:13:17.18 Well, what would you say to the people who say well, 00:13:17.21\00:13:21.02 I don't think the Jews are chosen more because 00:13:21.05\00:13:23.22 if they were chosen to proclaim the Messiah 00:13:23.25\00:13:24.90 and then they rejected the Messiah, 00:13:24.93\00:13:26.40 they don't really have anything to proclaim 00:13:26.43\00:13:28.24 and therefore they shouldn't reach us anymore 00:13:28.27\00:13:30.10 because they don't really have to-- 00:13:30.13\00:13:31.16 the message which God chosen for. 00:13:31.19\00:13:32.92 What would you say to that? 00:13:32.95\00:13:33.98 Well, the incorrect statement is that 00:13:34.01\00:13:36.66 they were chosen to proclaim something. 00:13:36.69\00:13:38.40 Right. Right. Which is not what the Bible says. 00:13:38.43\00:13:41.00 Yeah, they were chosen to preserve the Holy Scripture. 00:13:41.03\00:13:46.21 The Scripture proclaims the Messiah. 00:13:46.24\00:13:49.61 And Jewish prophets and Jewish priests 00:13:49.64\00:13:53.26 over the centuries created, copied 00:13:53.29\00:13:57.65 and preserved the Scriptures. 00:13:57.68\00:13:58.71 Like the Dead Sea scrolls. 00:13:58.74\00:13:59.84 We've gotten so much truth from the Dead Sea Scrolls today 00:13:59.87\00:14:02.56 and that's because the Jews did their Job. 00:14:02.59\00:14:04.21 And by the way if you are aware of that Sea Scrolls 00:14:04.24\00:14:08.13 were discovered in 1947, 1948 that's the same year 00:14:08.16\00:14:13.43 when the state of Israel was created. 00:14:13.46\00:14:15.69 Was found. Isn't that amazing? 00:14:15.72\00:14:16.75 And by the way had it been discovered earlier, 00:14:16.78\00:14:20.00 it would be destroyed because 00:14:20.03\00:14:21.83 there was no infrastructure nothing. 00:14:21.86\00:14:24.65 When you talk about Israel, 00:14:24.68\00:14:26.82 the one of the foundational institution 00:14:26.85\00:14:29.56 of the state of Israel that was created in late 1800 00:14:29.59\00:14:33.26 was Hebrew University where they had archeologists, 00:14:33.29\00:14:37.12 textologist, everything for the study of the Bible. 00:14:37.15\00:14:40.25 And the science that is produced in Hebrew University 00:14:40.28\00:14:44.27 dispel so much skepticism which existed in the 19th century. 00:14:44.30\00:14:51.82 So Paul is driving this right in the beginning 00:14:51.85\00:14:55.85 of his epistle when he ask question, 00:14:55.88\00:14:59.29 what is the advantage of being a Jew. 00:14:59.32\00:15:03.16 And he says right away, to them Romans 3:1, 00:15:03.19\00:15:06.71 "The Oracle of God were given." 00:15:06.74\00:15:10.09 So that's directly when he picks up the question of the root, 00:15:10.12\00:15:16.14 this root is rooted on the fact that there was-- 00:15:16.17\00:15:22.43 that God created a nation of Israel 00:15:22.46\00:15:25.79 so that through them His revelation 00:15:25.82\00:15:31.45 would be manifested to the world and accessible. 00:15:31.48\00:15:35.37 Well, which verses would you use from the Old Testament 00:15:35.40\00:15:37.78 to help us to really embrace the truth of the Jews 00:15:37.81\00:15:41.98 being chosen to preserve the scriptures. 00:15:42.01\00:15:45.26 There is one text which I believe 00:15:45.29\00:15:48.18 is fundamental is Exodus 19:5, 00:15:48.21\00:15:53.00 when it talks about the priesthood. 00:15:53.03\00:15:55.81 Jews were selected for priesthood, 00:15:55.84\00:16:00.35 the priesthood of the nation. 00:16:00.38\00:16:01.74 And the priesthood had two tasks, 00:16:01.77\00:16:05.58 one task is rituals and sacrifices at the sanctuary 00:16:05.61\00:16:09.95 and the second task is preserving the scripture. 00:16:09.98\00:16:12.82 Wow, that's neat. 00:16:12.85\00:16:13.88 You know, I once heard and I don't even remember 00:16:13.91\00:16:16.77 where I heard this from. 00:16:16.80\00:16:18.63 Someone had made and I may have read this-- 00:16:18.66\00:16:22.35 the statement that one of the greatest testimonies 00:16:22.38\00:16:25.54 that God exist is the fact that 00:16:25.57\00:16:28.32 the Jewish people still exist. Yeah. 00:16:28.35\00:16:30.43 And what he was saying was 00:16:30.46\00:16:31.61 is that if you look back through the history 00:16:31.64\00:16:34.81 at least even modern history 00:16:34.84\00:16:36.65 there has been numerous, numerous, numerous attempts 00:16:36.68\00:16:40.05 to wipe out the Jewish people. 00:16:40.08\00:16:41.44 And it made no sense that this little tiny group of people 00:16:41.47\00:16:44.98 could somehow though they were dispersed 00:16:45.01\00:16:48.04 and scattered and persecuted and killed 00:16:48.07\00:16:50.04 that somehow has been able to unlike any other 00:16:50.07\00:16:54.66 people group maintain their identity, 00:16:54.69\00:16:58.06 but then on top of it to look at the language. Right. 00:16:58.09\00:17:02.04 It's the only language that at one point was considered 00:17:02.07\00:17:05.34 a dead language only for religious purposes 00:17:05.37\00:17:08.63 and then to be revived as a spoken modern language. 00:17:08.66\00:17:14.10 I think that that so much speaks to God's desire 00:17:14.13\00:17:17.09 to preserve for a specific reason. 00:17:17.12\00:17:20.00 And they didn't just survived. It is a great testimony. 00:17:20.03\00:17:22.87 They didn't only survived but they thrived 00:17:22.90\00:17:25.49 which is even more of a testimony. Right. 00:17:25.52\00:17:28.09 So I want to read and I want to continue in Romans 11, Sasha. 00:17:28.12\00:17:33.11 But I do want to read Roman 11:17,18 00:17:33.14\00:17:38.24 because we were talking about this, the root. 00:17:38.27\00:17:41.80 And I love what Paul says here. 00:17:41.83\00:17:45.39 But if some of the branches were broken off, 00:17:45.42\00:17:48.12 he is talking about now the Jews 00:17:48.15\00:17:50.03 that have been broken away, right? 00:17:50.06\00:17:53.75 And you the nations, the non Jews were, 00:17:53.78\00:17:57.96 although you were a wild shoot he says 00:17:57.99\00:18:01.14 were grafted in among the others 00:18:01.17\00:18:03.04 and now sharing the nursing root of the Olive tree, 00:18:03.07\00:18:06.16 he says don't be arrogant towards the branches, all right. 00:18:06.19\00:18:10.66 And then this is the statement that I always loved. 00:18:10.69\00:18:13.44 If you are remember it is not you who support the root 00:18:13.47\00:18:18.34 but the root supports you. 00:18:18.37\00:18:22.22 On so many levels I think 00:18:22.25\00:18:24.00 this is such an important statement that, 00:18:24.03\00:18:28.56 I'm not so much talking about the modern Jewish religion, 00:18:28.59\00:18:33.78 I'm talking about the roots of our Christian faith 00:18:33.81\00:18:37.76 and what they are based in, okay. 00:18:37.79\00:18:40.79 That-- It's the Hebrew language, Jewish culture-- 00:18:40.82\00:18:44.01 The mindset and all of that. Mind set, mentality. 00:18:44.04\00:18:47.35 I mean, that's the source 00:18:47.38\00:18:50.18 that we should be looking to understand first 00:18:50.21\00:18:54.04 the scriptures before we make attempts to apply them. 00:18:54.07\00:18:59.17 Why do you think they are-- I mean, 00:18:59.20\00:19:00.94 since I have become a believer and I've joined 00:19:00.97\00:19:02.97 you know, "Christendom" in a way, 00:19:03.00\00:19:05.91 I meet a lot of Christians who seem to be afraid 00:19:05.94\00:19:08.41 to incorporate their Jewish roots 00:19:08.44\00:19:11.22 or to look at their roots of Christianity, 00:19:11.25\00:19:13.35 why do you think that there is some fear there? 00:19:13.38\00:19:15.96 It seems to me that there is fear because they 00:19:15.99\00:19:18.62 because they think it's maybe possibly totally separate, 00:19:18.65\00:19:21.45 you know, or that they are going to be giving up Christ, 00:19:21.48\00:19:24.87 you know, but when we recognize that majority of Jews, 00:19:24.90\00:19:28.60 many Jews did accept Christ when He was here 00:19:28.63\00:19:30.31 and many of them are accepting Him today. 00:19:30.34\00:19:32.11 And then looking at the reality of our roots 00:19:32.14\00:19:35.02 and becoming at peace with the connectedness of that, 00:19:35.05\00:19:38.10 I think that can take away that fear 00:19:38.13\00:19:40.45 because I do meet a lot of people 00:19:40.48\00:19:41.70 who are afraid to talk about our Jewish roots. 00:19:41.73\00:19:43.44 They wanted to be totally separate from the Jews. 00:19:43.47\00:19:45.11 Well, you know, what I would say 00:19:45.14\00:19:47.83 that probably the idea that-- it's the Jewish roots 00:19:47.86\00:19:54.75 and it's kind-- I guess the best way 00:19:54.78\00:19:56.71 I can explain this that as a Jew 00:19:56.74\00:19:58.73 when I would hear, I mean, before becoming a believer, 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.61 when I would think of Christianity, 00:20:01.64\00:20:03.59 I didn't necessarily think about Jesus. 00:20:03.62\00:20:05.43 I thought about everything the Christianity was. 00:20:05.46\00:20:07.80 To me all the baggage. 00:20:07.83\00:20:09.49 And we said this in another holiday 00:20:09.52\00:20:11.84 I mean, in another program the holidays, 00:20:11.87\00:20:14.43 all the things that were so foreign to me 00:20:14.46\00:20:16.73 that were another people's thing, okay. 00:20:16.76\00:20:19.76 And I think that when-- 00:20:19.80\00:20:22.66 when we are talking in terms of the Hebraic roots 00:20:22.69\00:20:25.61 that we use you know, like the Jewish, 00:20:25.64\00:20:28.88 you know, the Jew thinks Jewish. 00:20:28.91\00:20:31.48 That's a whole different thing to me. 00:20:31.51\00:20:34.18 The things Jewish or the things maybe 00:20:34.21\00:20:35.75 they are even being practiced today. 00:20:35.78\00:20:37.59 And not everything Jewish today 00:20:37.62\00:20:39.54 you know, has any connection to biblical in origin. 00:20:39.57\00:20:43.33 That's true. That's true. 00:20:43.36\00:20:44.51 So maybe part of it, Rachel, is just semantics. 00:20:44.54\00:20:47.31 Right. It's just how it's presented. 00:20:47.34\00:20:49.45 And to not be caught up into traditions 00:20:49.48\00:20:51.02 and rabbinical thought but to stay with the Bible, 00:20:51.05\00:20:53.48 so there is probably a healthy fear there 00:20:53.51\00:20:55.28 combined with some ignorant fear. 00:20:55.31\00:20:57.67 You know, it runs very deeply you know, 00:20:57.70\00:21:00.84 it runs into the idea when people get afraid 00:21:00.87\00:21:03.07 when you start talking about the Levitical Feast 00:21:03.10\00:21:05.12 you know, or the Jewish holidays. 00:21:05.15\00:21:06.74 No, no, no, there's no where in Leviticus Chapter 23 00:21:06.77\00:21:09.33 that it says these are the Jewish holidays, 00:21:09.36\00:21:11.17 since these are the feast of the Lord. 00:21:11.20\00:21:13.13 Well, yeah, but the other side of it is, 00:21:13.16\00:21:15.50 is that then people run and they say we have to keep the feast. 00:21:15.53\00:21:19.10 Well, you know, we've said this in previous program, 00:21:19.13\00:21:21.62 there's no way to keep the feast. 00:21:21.65\00:21:23.47 They are all related to harvest to the sacrificial system. 00:21:23.50\00:21:28.12 You know, the best we can do is celebrate 00:21:28.15\00:21:30.25 and you know, I would say that the only thing 00:21:30.28\00:21:32.40 we could rightly celebrate is how they portray 00:21:32.43\00:21:35.62 the plan of salvation through our Messiah. 00:21:35.65\00:21:38.13 But let's get back to--to this idea of being broken off. 00:21:38.16\00:21:45.49 Sasha, what do you think about this in Romans 17 and 18. 00:21:45.52\00:21:49.15 Well, we definitely have the biblical history 00:21:49.18\00:21:54.88 where we have basically 12 tribes of Israel. 00:21:54.91\00:22:00.37 And by the time Paul is writing, 00:22:00.40\00:22:02.95 there is only basically three barely existing you know, 00:22:02.98\00:22:10.29 you have tribe of Judah, the large one. 00:22:10.32\00:22:13.02 Paul himself is from the tribe of Benjamin, 00:22:13.05\00:22:16.29 but how many Benjaminites are left, a very little. 00:22:16.32\00:22:20.52 And of course the tribe of Levi 00:22:20.55\00:22:22.81 and so Paul definitely here refers to the fact 00:22:22.84\00:22:27.36 that ten tribes of Israel in 722 were taken 00:22:27.39\00:22:34.13 into a Syrian captivity and never returned. 00:22:34.16\00:22:36.69 So he is talking about the fact that 00:22:36.72\00:22:40.29 when people go away from the truth of the Lord, 00:22:40.32\00:22:45.20 they will be, they will be cut off. 00:22:45.23\00:22:48.37 And so he makes the analogy here. 00:22:48.40\00:22:51.09 You know, don't boast, you've just been grafted in. 00:22:51.12\00:22:55.32 If they were cut off more so will you be cut off. 00:22:55.35\00:23:00.46 Right, and the important thing is that Paul goes on 00:23:00.49\00:23:03.57 and he expresses that in terms of their unbelief. 00:23:03.60\00:23:06.34 It was because of their unbelief that they were cut off 00:23:06.37\00:23:09.25 and the same unbelief that's gonna cause-- 00:23:09.28\00:23:11.64 Cause anybody-- Anyone to be cut off. 00:23:11.67\00:23:13.15 Right. That's gonna happen. 00:23:13.18\00:23:15.46 Well, we have run out of time. 00:23:15.49\00:23:19.16 Rachel has a song for us. 00:23:19.19\00:23:20.82 Eli, Eli, My God, my God 00:23:20.85\00:23:22.57 written by Hannah Senesh famous paratrooper 00:23:22.60\00:23:26.43 who fought Nazis during the Holocaust. 00:23:26.46\00:23:30.16 Eli 00:24:03.31\00:24:07.77 Eli 00:24:07.80\00:24:12.13 I pray that these things never end 00:24:12.16\00:24:19.35 The sand and the sea 00:24:19.38\00:24:26.41 The rush of the water 00:24:26.44\00:24:33.63 The crash of the heavens 00:24:33.66\00:24:41.14 The prayer of man 00:24:41.17\00:24:48.71 The sand and the sea 00:24:48.74\00:24:55.94 The rush of the water 00:24:55.97\00:25:03.15 The crash of the heavens 00:25:03.18\00:25:09.73 The prayer of man 00:25:09.76\00:25:17.36 Eli 00:25:37.98\00:25:43.42 Eli 00:25:43.45\00:25:49.63 I pray 00:25:49.66\00:25:52.18 that these things never end 00:25:52.21\00:25:58.25 The sand and the sea 00:25:58.28\00:26:04.44 The rush of the water 00:26:04.47\00:26:11.08 The crash of the heavens 00:26:11.11\00:26:18.20 The prayer of man 00:26:18.23\00:26:25.88 The sand and the sea 00:26:25.91\00:26:33.67 The rush of the water 00:26:33.70\00:26:40.15 The crash of the heavens 00:26:40.18\00:26:46.39 The prayer of man 00:26:46.42\00:26:52.47 The light 00:26:52.50\00:26:55.75 of the blue skies 00:26:55.78\00:27:01.08 The prayer 00:27:01.11\00:27:03.89 of the world 00:27:03.92\00:27:11.52 Well, Rachel, what a beautiful, beautiful song. 00:27:24.52\00:27:27.52 You know, that's just such a testimony 00:27:27.55\00:27:30.23 how in the darkest of times 00:27:30.26\00:27:33.36 it seems like the human spirit shines the brightest. 00:27:33.39\00:27:36.69 So true, the author of that song was just executed 00:27:36.72\00:27:38.79 just a few weeks after she wrote that song. 00:27:38.82\00:27:40.53 Wow. Amazing. 00:27:40.56\00:27:41.70 Well, friends, it's been a wonderful program 00:27:41.73\00:27:45.77 and we thank you so much for joining us 00:27:45.80\00:27:47.40 God is not through with anyone. 00:27:47.43\00:27:50.30 May the Lord bless you and keep you 00:27:50.33\00:27:52.20 until we return next time. 00:27:52.23\00:27:54.05 Join us again on Back to our Roots. 00:27:54.08\00:27:59.12
