Everybody has different opinions 00:00:01.10\00:00:02.60 on what the Lord's Supper is all about. 00:00:02.63\00:00:04.90 Join us today on "Back to Our Roots" 00:00:04.93\00:00:06.51 as we talk about this topic. 00:00:06.54\00:00:08.01 Welcome once again to "Back to Our Roots." 00:00:28.07\00:00:30.41 I'm your host Pastor Alex Schussler 00:00:30.44\00:00:32.35 and my co-host-- Rachael Hyman. 00:00:32.38\00:00:34.35 And we want to welcome and thank you 00:00:34.38\00:00:35.66 that you have joined us today. 00:00:35.69\00:00:37.08 Our topic today we're gonna be speaking about the Lord's Table. 00:00:37.11\00:00:40.69 People also use the term communion 00:00:40.72\00:00:42.92 when they are talking in terms. 00:00:42.95\00:00:44.07 Rachel, what-- I know we've shared 00:00:44.10\00:00:46.34 some pretty interesting stories. 00:00:46.37\00:00:47.79 What was your experience as a Jewish believer, 00:00:47.82\00:00:50.86 the first time you were introduced to that? 00:00:50.89\00:00:53.83 Well, my mom actually converted to Catholicism 00:00:53.86\00:00:56.43 when I was about 12 years old when she remarried. 00:00:56.46\00:00:59.12 Yeah, and for the first time in my life 00:00:59.15\00:01:01.52 we visited a Catholic Church and I saw my mom open her mouth 00:01:01.55\00:01:05.25 like this as the priest put this round white wafer in her mouth. 00:01:05.28\00:01:11.03 And I remember participating with her 00:01:11.06\00:01:13.17 because she pressured us into it, 00:01:13.20\00:01:14.67 but feeling like I had absolutely no idea 00:01:14.70\00:01:17.41 what I was doing and everybody was just standing in line 00:01:17.44\00:01:19.27 waiting for their wafer and calling this 00:01:19.30\00:01:22.40 somehow the body of Christ somehow 00:01:22.43\00:01:25.13 and to be honest I was really weird it out. 00:01:25.16\00:01:27.96 I was really weird it out. 00:01:27.99\00:01:29.71 You know, what's interesting is that, I have to say, 00:01:29.74\00:01:32.85 my experience was almost identical. 00:01:32.88\00:01:34.77 It wasn't my mom, but it was friends of mine 00:01:34.80\00:01:38.11 that they also were Catholics and, you know, 00:01:38.14\00:01:41.02 I had gone to church with them 00:01:41.05\00:01:42.48 and here I was a nice Jewish boy from Miami 00:01:42.51\00:01:45.06 going, you know, to the Catholic Church 00:01:45.09\00:01:47.19 and watching them. 00:01:47.22\00:01:48.25 I sat in the back, I didn't go forward. 00:01:48.28\00:01:50.84 I sat in the back and I watched. 00:01:50.87\00:01:52.08 You are a good Jewish boy 00:01:52.11\00:01:53.49 Well. Unlike me. 00:01:53.52\00:01:54.60 I watched them, you know, take the wafer and drink 00:01:54.63\00:01:58.49 and the whole body of Christ thing, I was so confused. 00:01:58.52\00:02:01.39 It's weird, huh? 00:02:01.42\00:02:02.45 I didn't, what are they talking about? 00:02:02.48\00:02:05.10 It's like this little, you know, 00:02:05.13\00:02:07.67 I know that there's so many different ideas and concepts 00:02:07.70\00:02:12.06 about the Lord's table about communion, 00:02:12.09\00:02:15.33 about its origins, what really is it? 00:02:15.36\00:02:19.31 What is it mean? What can we draw from it? 00:02:19.34\00:02:22.49 And we're going to be talking about that great detail today 00:02:22.52\00:02:25.39 and we are going to especially take a look at the Passover 00:02:25.42\00:02:30.19 because without really understanding the Passover, 00:02:30.22\00:02:33.61 I don't think that we can fully understand 00:02:33.64\00:02:36.99 what exactly happened, especially when we go back 00:02:37.02\00:02:40.27 talking in the context of Jesus and the first Lord's Table, 00:02:40.30\00:02:44.78 when He shared with His disciples. 00:02:44.81\00:02:46.66 So before we get too deep into the program 00:02:46.69\00:02:49.25 we want to invite our friend Alexander Bolotnikov, 00:02:49.28\00:02:52.07 Dr. Alexander Bolotnikov. We call him Sasha. 00:02:52.10\00:02:55.86 To join us he is our-- as we say resident theologian. 00:02:55.89\00:02:59.55 He brings a deeper meaning to each topic. 00:02:59.58\00:03:04.24 Yeah, good to see you, Rachel. How are you doing buddy? 00:03:04.27\00:03:05.78 Good to see you, Alex. Good to see you, Sasha. 00:03:05.81\00:03:07.75 So today, Sasha, we're talking about the Lord's Table. 00:03:07.78\00:03:10.98 And we are talking about the Lord's Table 00:03:11.01\00:03:13.06 and how it draws without a doubt 00:03:13.09\00:03:16.32 its traditions from what is know as the Passover. 00:03:16.35\00:03:20.38 So, Sasha, why don't we just jump into it? 00:03:20.41\00:03:24.91 And we want to share what we understand 00:03:24.94\00:03:29.41 or what we know about the Passover service 00:03:29.44\00:03:31.61 to set the groundwork because we're gonna refer to this 00:03:31.64\00:03:35.93 quite a bit through our talk today. 00:03:35.96\00:03:40.44 One of the things that's important 00:03:40.47\00:03:42.02 I think for us to understand is that 00:03:42.05\00:03:44.20 the Jewish people are very based on tradition. 00:03:44.23\00:03:47.56 That, you can almost count on that the things that were done 00:03:47.59\00:03:52.37 hundreds and hundreds of years ago 00:03:52.40\00:03:54.42 are pretty much done even today. 00:03:54.45\00:03:58.66 May be some differences 00:03:58.69\00:04:00.02 but the elements remain very much the same. 00:04:00.05\00:04:02.86 Oh, yeah, oh, yeah. 00:04:02.89\00:04:03.92 And we will see in our program, 00:04:03.95\00:04:06.75 in our discussion that indeed they were the same 00:04:06.78\00:04:12.44 at least in many ways as we see them today in Judaism 00:04:12.47\00:04:18.64 and basically first of all we need to say that. 00:04:18.67\00:04:26.58 What is known as a Last Supper today? 00:04:26.61\00:04:31.44 The story Jesus sat with the disciples in the upper room. 00:04:31.47\00:04:36.70 The Gospel of Matthew Chapter 26 00:04:36.73\00:04:39.81 clearly speaks and calls it a Passover. 00:04:39.84\00:04:43.98 The disciples asks Jesus specific question. 00:04:44.01\00:04:49.33 When where shall we prepare a Passover for you? 00:04:49.36\00:04:54.26 Right, right. 00:04:54.29\00:04:55.59 What confuses many Christians is, 00:04:55.62\00:04:59.05 they look at the Passover described in the Book of Exodus. 00:04:59.08\00:05:04.10 Exactly. 00:05:04.13\00:05:05.16 Where Passover is the lamb. 00:05:05.19\00:05:08.56 So many Christians erroneously assume 00:05:08.59\00:05:15.94 that disciples actually killed the lamb 00:05:15.97\00:05:22.49 and they were having a sacrifice in the upper room. 00:05:22.52\00:05:25.76 But you know as we talked about in a previous program, 00:05:25.79\00:05:28.46 we dealt with Passover in detail. 00:05:28.49\00:05:32.14 And we opened up and explored the idea 00:05:32.17\00:05:36.17 that Jesus was in fact that perfect lamb 00:05:36.20\00:05:39.86 that the time when the lambs were being slaughtered, 00:05:39.89\00:05:42.86 Jesus was dying on the cross for us. 00:05:42.89\00:05:45.31 So what they are doing is-- 00:05:45.34\00:05:49.36 it is what we would know as a Seder. Exactly. 00:05:49.39\00:05:52.64 Okay, but it wasn't the slaughter of the lamb. 00:05:52.67\00:05:55.07 This is-- this has nothing to do 00:05:55.10\00:05:57.81 with the temple Passover sacrifice. 00:05:57.84\00:06:00.81 Exact. So let's talk this a little-- 00:06:00.84\00:06:02.55 Even though it was on the same exact time 00:06:02.58\00:06:04.51 as the regular Passover or it was little earlier? 00:06:04.54\00:06:06.45 It was on the day exact-- 00:06:06.48\00:06:07.51 Well, we have-- it's a good question, Rachel. 00:06:07.54\00:06:10.60 We have to see the progression. 00:06:10.63\00:06:13.37 We're talking 14th of Nisan. 00:06:13.40\00:06:16.69 On the 14th of Nisan people of Israel 00:06:16.72\00:06:20.96 had this last night with their belts 00:06:20.99\00:06:25.02 and their clothes with their shoes on with the sock-- 00:06:25.05\00:06:28.63 Now, we're talking in the context of the Exodus. 00:06:28.66\00:06:30.85 Yes, that's-- Okay. 00:06:30.88\00:06:32.47 Well, what happens next, 00:06:32.50\00:06:34.74 this is one time event in history. 00:06:34.77\00:06:37.24 What happens next the Book of Deuteronomy comes in. 00:06:37.27\00:06:40.19 1 Deuteronomy 16 strictly forbids 00:06:40.22\00:06:43.39 to kill any lamb in the house. Right. 00:06:43.42\00:06:46.19 And that's why we have in the temple tradition, 00:06:46.22\00:06:51.77 a commemoration of Exodus through sacrificial service. 00:06:51.80\00:06:57.13 And really that becomes the basic concept 00:06:57.16\00:07:00.75 of the Passover itself is that it is now 00:07:00.78\00:07:04.51 a ritualistic commemoration 00:07:04.54\00:07:06.87 remembering those things that happened 00:07:06.90\00:07:10.46 as God drew the people out of Egypt. 00:07:10.49\00:07:13.26 And that's why Leviticus 23 sets up the Passover sacrifice 00:07:13.29\00:07:19.70 which is different than what was happening actually in Egypt. 00:07:19.73\00:07:25.62 So--but as Alex explained it out 00:07:25.65\00:07:29.28 what Jesus and disciples did 00:07:29.31\00:07:32.13 happened before and, you know, 00:07:32.16\00:07:35.89 basically a day ahead of the Passover sacrifice. 00:07:35.92\00:07:40.76 In other words it happened at the beginning of 14th of Nisan 00:07:40.79\00:07:44.64 while the Passover sacrifice at the temple 00:07:44.67\00:07:47.59 is at the end of 14th of Nisan. 00:07:47.62\00:07:49.96 So, you know, this I may be stating the obvious 00:07:49.99\00:07:52.28 but remember that we're reckoning time 00:07:52.31\00:07:55.01 from sun down to sun down, that represents a day. 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.63 Right. 00:07:58.66\00:07:59.69 Not as we would in Western culture 00:07:59.72\00:08:01.18 think it's when the sun comes up, 00:08:01.21\00:08:02.91 that's the beginning of a day. 00:08:02.94\00:08:04.07 So they were having the Seder 00:08:04.10\00:08:05.15 when they were supposed to be having a Seder 00:08:05.18\00:08:06.57 and Jesus died when the lamb was supposed to be saved. 00:08:06.60\00:08:08.77 Exactly, but that's what you mentioned. 00:08:08.80\00:08:11.37 The Seder is just a commemorative meal. 00:08:11.40\00:08:14.46 Ritualistic meal. 00:08:14.49\00:08:15.52 Yeah, not even the ritual but commemorative. 00:08:15.55\00:08:18.45 Ritual was at the temple that was at-- 00:08:18.48\00:08:20.76 Yeah, but I think that we could say, 00:08:20.79\00:08:22.44 'cause there were specific things 00:08:22.47\00:08:24.29 that we need to talk about real quickly, 00:08:24.32\00:08:26.72 that God commanded that there were elements 00:08:26.75\00:08:29.85 that we, that the Jewish people needed to bring in, 00:08:29.88\00:08:33.44 things that needed to be present. 00:08:33.47\00:08:35.10 Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, absolutely. 00:08:35.13\00:08:36.16 So let's talk about that a little bit, Sasha. 00:08:36.19\00:08:37.90 So in the first century I know that things were added later. 00:08:37.93\00:08:42.25 But in the first century what can we-- 00:08:42.28\00:08:46.38 for the most part understand were the elements 00:08:46.41\00:08:48.59 that were used in that ritualistic meal, 00:08:48.62\00:08:51.72 what we know as a Seder. 00:08:51.75\00:08:52.78 Yeah, yeah, exactly. 00:08:52.81\00:08:54.38 What we see very specific traditional 00:08:54.41\00:08:57.56 is usage of the wine. 00:08:57.59\00:09:01.15 Okay, so there is a wine, there is also-- 00:09:01.18\00:09:03.69 Unfermented of course. 00:09:03.72\00:09:05.82 Well, some people would say that. 00:09:05.85\00:09:07.60 Well, that's another discussion. 00:09:07.63\00:09:08.83 That's another discussion. For another program. 00:09:08.86\00:09:11.03 Yeah, let's not discuss that part right now. 00:09:11.06\00:09:15.13 And I don't think that's the point, this point. 00:09:15.16\00:09:20.33 So what are the elements do we have, Sasha? 00:09:20.36\00:09:23.54 We have the wine. 00:09:23.57\00:09:24.60 So we have wine and that's what sets it apart form Exodus 12 00:09:24.63\00:09:28.33 which never talks about the wine. 00:09:28.36\00:09:30.58 So we have particularly four cups of wine 00:09:30.61\00:09:34.48 which are may be like this its kind of a large cups and-- 00:09:34.51\00:09:39.73 We have some herbs. 00:09:39.76\00:09:41.12 Yeah, the bitter herbs, 00:09:41.15\00:09:43.67 the unleavened bread know as Matzah. 00:09:43.70\00:09:47.48 And the, well, they had some sweet. 00:09:47.51\00:09:51.82 You know, today it's used it's what's called Kharoses, 00:09:51.85\00:09:54.89 I don't know how to explain it. 00:09:54.92\00:09:56.69 Well, yes, it's basically apples and honey and nuts mixed. 00:09:56.72\00:10:00.91 And raisins may be. 00:10:00.94\00:10:01.97 Yeah, mixed together in like a little-- 00:10:02.00\00:10:04.34 Sort of remembering this hard labor, 00:10:04.37\00:10:08.40 the mortar they did for the bricks. 00:10:08.43\00:10:11.39 You know, so this is the element, major element. 00:10:11.42\00:10:14.99 But in the context of the Lord's Table 00:10:15.02\00:10:17.89 and in the context of the discussion 00:10:17.92\00:10:19.78 that we have here, the two things 00:10:19.81\00:10:22.84 that are definitely come up is the Matzah 00:10:22.87\00:10:26.22 and the cups of the fruit of the wine. 00:10:26.25\00:10:27.93 And the bitter herbs. Because they dip. 00:10:27.96\00:10:31.76 Yeah, they dip. 00:10:31.79\00:10:32.82 And you remember how Jesus dipped the Matzah 00:10:32.85\00:10:36.49 into the bitter herbs and gave it to Judas. 00:10:36.52\00:10:39.04 And well, he said, yeah, the one who eats after this 00:10:39.07\00:10:41.23 is the one that's going to betray me. 00:10:41.26\00:10:42.88 Yeah. So-- 00:10:42.91\00:10:45.31 So, but the cups-- this is how we know 00:10:45.34\00:10:47.85 that it was traditional rabbinic Passovers. 00:10:47.88\00:10:50.53 Well, this also becomes then evidence 00:10:50.56\00:10:54.17 I believe that, yes one Jesus and His followers 00:10:54.20\00:11:00.97 were in fact celebrating a Passover Seder 00:11:01.00\00:11:04.42 without a doubt based on the set up, 00:11:04.45\00:11:07.16 the elements and everything. 00:11:07.19\00:11:10.19 The other thing just as a little sidebar, Sasha, 00:11:10.22\00:11:12.81 and I wonder what your feelings about this. 00:11:12.84\00:11:14.57 I've always thought that this picture 00:11:14.60\00:11:17.16 that we have like Leonardo Da Vinci 00:11:17.19\00:11:18.95 paints of the last supper. 00:11:18.98\00:11:20.55 You know, of all these men sitting at the table. 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.37 You know, straight across in a line is not true at all. 00:11:23.40\00:11:27.23 This is like-- this is like a picture 00:11:27.26\00:11:29.62 of the dining room of Italian convent. 00:11:29.65\00:11:35.23 So, I think more likely they were sitting in 00:11:35.26\00:11:40.58 like a horse shoe type of shape, 00:11:40.61\00:11:42.69 the tables would have been more like that maybe. 00:11:42.72\00:11:45.29 It was very low because first of all 00:11:45.32\00:11:47.31 they were kind of sitting down on the floor. 00:11:47.34\00:11:50.72 And they were supposed to recline, 00:11:50.75\00:11:53.64 you know, you got your-- 00:11:53.67\00:11:54.72 That's how we know that when it talks about 00:11:54.75\00:11:56.87 how John laid his head on the bosom of Jesus. 00:11:56.90\00:12:00.51 You know, he did like in the chair pulled Jesus over 00:12:00.54\00:12:02.92 and no, because of how they were laying 00:12:02.95\00:12:05.41 and it was very easy for him 00:12:05.44\00:12:06.56 just to lay back in there, he was. 00:12:06.59\00:12:09.10 You lean your right elbow 00:12:09.13\00:12:11.62 against the left knee of your body. 00:12:11.65\00:12:15.19 And what is that symbolize again? 00:12:15.22\00:12:16.69 Unity. Well, and being free. 00:12:16.72\00:12:18.89 Two, it's a symbol of freedom. Yeah, exactly. 00:12:18.92\00:12:20.69 That a rich man ate reclining while a poor man ate standing. 00:12:20.72\00:12:26.01 Yeah, that's right. It's a-- 00:12:26.04\00:12:27.99 And the other thing is that-- I also think 00:12:28.02\00:12:30.91 that there was way more than just the disciples there 00:12:30.94\00:12:35.26 because I think Jesus is acting as the leader of their family, 00:12:35.29\00:12:39.86 their group and Passover 00:12:39.89\00:12:42.12 and the Seder meal is a family event. 00:12:42.15\00:12:44.52 It centers on the children, teaching them, 00:12:44.55\00:12:46.93 passing on the story of what happened. 00:12:46.96\00:12:50.12 So there would have been 00:12:50.15\00:12:51.64 women and children in the picture as well. 00:12:51.67\00:12:55.07 You know, in Deuteronomy, you teach it, you teach it, 00:12:55.10\00:12:57.74 when your child asks that's and they even haven't, you know-- 00:12:57.77\00:13:02.64 The four questions. 00:13:02.67\00:13:04.37 Which is part of the service today. Yeah. 00:13:04.40\00:13:06.33 So, we've already talked about the ritual 00:13:06.36\00:13:12.11 based on Exodus Chapter 12 00:13:12.14\00:13:14.04 and we kind of brought it up-to-date. 00:13:14.07\00:13:16.38 But let's really focus now on what exactly Jesus is doing 00:13:16.41\00:13:20.94 because we don't want to short cut any of that. 00:13:20.97\00:13:22.74 We want to be able to take our time. 00:13:22.77\00:13:23.90 What we can see, 00:13:23.93\00:13:26.28 there are four cups during the Passover Seder. 00:13:26.31\00:13:31.02 Even today. Yeah, even today. 00:13:31.05\00:13:33.55 And those--I'm sorry, those come directly out of Exodus. 00:13:33.58\00:13:37.77 Those are the promises that God made, 00:13:37.80\00:13:39.87 that I will promises, right. 00:13:39.90\00:13:41.74 Yeah, they are based on Exodus 6. 00:13:41.77\00:13:45.51 "That I will take you out of Egypt. 00:13:45.54\00:13:47.64 I will make you my children. 00:13:47.67\00:13:50.07 I will free you from the bondage." 00:13:50.10\00:13:53.29 So this is kind of base, it's more or like 00:13:53.32\00:13:55.76 may be a homiletical base, 00:13:55.79\00:13:57.57 that each cup symbolizes the act of God, 00:13:57.60\00:14:01.72 the redemptive act of God during Exodus. 00:14:01.75\00:14:05.26 And it's important that the Jesus does it as Exodus 00:14:05.29\00:14:12.60 because we got to remember especially 00:14:12.63\00:14:15.71 in the Gospel of Matthew and Gospel of John. 00:14:15.74\00:14:18.39 Jesus has viewed as this leader of a new spiritual exodus 00:14:18.42\00:14:24.09 from the bondage of sin. 00:14:24.12\00:14:26.93 And so, what happens is, we see Gospel of Luke. 00:14:26.96\00:14:33.08 In the Gospel of Luke Chapter 22-- 00:14:33.11\00:14:35.88 So let me read this real quick. 00:14:35.91\00:14:38.01 Gospel of Luke Chapter 22. I'm gonna begin at verse 17. 00:14:38.04\00:14:43.77 "And He took the cup, He being Jesus. 00:14:43.80\00:14:45.65 "He took the cup and when He had given thanks He said, 00:14:45.68\00:14:49.63 "Take this, and divide it among yourselves. 00:14:49.66\00:14:52.21 For I tell you that from now on 00:14:52.24\00:14:54.29 I will not drink of the fruit of the wine 00:14:54.32\00:14:56.83 until the kingdom of God comes." 00:14:56.86\00:14:59.80 Okay. So let's stop right there and let's talk about the cup 00:14:59.83\00:15:02.42 because the next thing as He is going to go on 00:15:02.45\00:15:04.49 and He is going to talk about the bread. 00:15:04.52\00:15:05.65 Exactly. Right. 00:15:05.68\00:15:06.71 This is what makes it very unconventional for many people 00:15:06.74\00:15:11.87 because everybody especially in Protestant tradition know 00:15:11.90\00:15:16.16 you take the bread first and then you take the wine. 00:15:16.19\00:15:20.12 And in Luke verse 17, he takes the cup 00:15:20.15\00:15:23.51 and then he takes the bread, it's in reverse. 00:15:23.54\00:15:26.33 But if you read next verse 20, then it's again the cup. 00:15:26.36\00:15:31.91 So you have two cups, this is definitely the hint. 00:15:31.94\00:15:37.91 It's a very strong hint that there were other, 00:15:37.94\00:15:41.42 you know, we'll see another cup. 00:15:41.45\00:15:43.43 So we have two cups out of four. 00:15:43.46\00:15:45.97 What these two cups are? 00:15:46.00\00:15:50.25 This one cup which is in verse 17, 00:15:50.28\00:15:53.34 this is a cup of plagues. 00:15:53.37\00:15:57.07 That's the time when they drink this cup of wine 00:15:57.10\00:16:01.85 and they read the story. 00:16:01.88\00:16:04.44 You know, today they take, they dip the finger 00:16:04.47\00:16:08.01 and they remember the-- 00:16:08.04\00:16:09.36 Put a drop as we remember each one of the plague. 00:16:09.39\00:16:11.36 Each of the plagues, so they read how God rescued Israel 00:16:11.39\00:16:17.41 with wonders and signs and things like this. 00:16:17.44\00:16:20.04 Right and what about the second one? 00:16:20.07\00:16:21.66 The second cup is called the cup of redemption. 00:16:21.69\00:16:26.43 And that's interesting because when they take-- 00:16:26.46\00:16:30.47 no that's the third cup. 00:16:30.50\00:16:31.82 Right, right. 00:16:31.85\00:16:32.88 You know, that's the cup of redemption. 00:16:32.91\00:16:34.61 So the second cup. 00:16:34.64\00:16:35.85 So the second cup is the cup of plagues. 00:16:35.88\00:16:38.30 Okay, what about the first cup? 00:16:38.33\00:16:39.87 The first cup is called the cup of sanctification. 00:16:39.90\00:16:42.43 Okay, so we are going to jump-- 00:16:42.46\00:16:43.70 Where are you getting all of that from, 00:16:43.73\00:16:45.20 is that like tradition? 00:16:45.23\00:16:46.26 This is--its drawing from Exodus Chapter 6. Okay. 00:16:46.29\00:16:49.42 And then its rabbinic tradition applying the things, 00:16:49.45\00:16:52.38 the promises that God made to the Hebrews 00:16:52.41\00:16:55.40 in the context of the Passover. 00:16:55.43\00:16:56.57 In the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Matthew 00:16:56.60\00:16:59.49 prove that this was the case because what you have, 00:16:59.52\00:17:02.55 if you go sequence you read this gospel in, 00:17:02.58\00:17:05.53 you drink the first cup that's the sanctification. 00:17:05.56\00:17:09.27 You read the prayer of blessing. 00:17:09.30\00:17:11.17 You do the washing of the hands and by the way John 13 00:17:11.20\00:17:15.64 describes how everybody fights, 00:17:15.67\00:17:18.89 who is gonna wash the hands of Jesus 00:17:18.92\00:17:21.07 because that's the best disciples, you know, 00:17:21.10\00:17:24.17 mother of John and James wants some of them close by 00:17:24.20\00:17:28.23 and Jesus said nobody washes my hand, 00:17:28.26\00:17:30.75 I'm gonna wash everybody's feet. 00:17:30.78\00:17:32.85 Right. Which He takes on whole another thing. 00:17:32.88\00:17:35.48 So that's the one thing He definitely uses and changes. 00:17:35.51\00:17:40.85 And then you have cup of plagues, 00:17:40.88\00:17:43.42 that's when you read the story of Exodus and after that-- 00:17:43.45\00:17:47.64 Now we get to the third cup. 00:17:47.67\00:17:49.16 Now, the third cup, Sasha, let me interject. 00:17:49.19\00:17:52.26 I think is it more than likely at the point of this narrative 00:17:52.29\00:17:57.57 that this is where we are. 00:17:57.60\00:17:58.80 Exactly. That we're at the third cup. 00:17:58.83\00:17:59.86 That's the third cup of redemption. 00:17:59.89\00:18:00.92 'Cause this is when He says, I'm not going to drink it. 00:18:00.95\00:18:03.49 And again this is one of those things that so touches my heart 00:18:03.52\00:18:07.92 that here is Jesus saying, take this cup and drink it 00:18:07.95\00:18:12.67 but in the order of the service 00:18:12.70\00:18:14.76 this in fact is the cup of redemption. 00:18:14.79\00:18:16.68 That's the cup of redemption and that's the cup 00:18:16.71\00:18:19.48 that represents His blood. 00:18:19.51\00:18:21.95 But let's talk about the bread too. 00:18:21.98\00:18:24.34 Right, well-- So wait. 00:18:24.37\00:18:25.40 Did Jews today have that third cup and to them 00:18:25.43\00:18:28.24 does that signify redemption as well? 00:18:28.27\00:18:30.07 It is still redemption, yeah. It is still redemption. 00:18:30.10\00:18:31.99 Looking for the coming of the Messiah. 00:18:32.02\00:18:33.61 Of the Messiah, exactly. 00:18:33.64\00:18:34.83 So if we continue reading it says, "And he took bread, 00:18:34.86\00:18:37.03 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, gave it to them, 00:18:37.06\00:18:39.05 saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. 00:18:39.08\00:18:41.26 Do this in remembrance of me. "' 00:18:41.29\00:18:43.17 Now, one of the things 00:18:43.20\00:18:45.57 also that I think most Christians 00:18:45.60\00:18:47.95 miss out on is that, you know, 00:18:47.98\00:18:50.29 the little pieces of bread or wafers or whatever 00:18:50.32\00:18:53.95 unleavened bread that goes out usually comes out in a tray 00:18:53.98\00:18:56.48 and everyone takes a little piece 00:18:56.51\00:18:58.36 but what we are missing here 00:18:58.39\00:19:00.31 is that Jesus would have taken this one piece of flat bread, 00:19:00.34\00:19:05.32 okay that He's saying, this represents my body. 00:19:05.35\00:19:08.98 He would have broken that one piece and I imagined Him 00:19:09.01\00:19:13.25 passing it to the left and passing it to the right 00:19:13.28\00:19:16.55 and each one of them breaking a piece off of the one 00:19:16.58\00:19:19.93 which really is way more symbolic of the idea that, look, 00:19:19.96\00:19:24.77 this is my body that's gonna be broken for you 00:19:24.80\00:19:28.03 and He doesn't say, this is my body. 00:19:28.06\00:19:30.43 So do this in remembrance of me. 00:19:30.46\00:19:33.62 And even Paul in Corinthians comes back and reiterates this. 00:19:33.65\00:19:37.30 That whenever you eat or you drink you know, 00:19:37.33\00:19:39.90 you remember the death of the Lord until He returns. 00:19:39.93\00:19:42.72 And that's exactly the meaning of the communes of remembering. 00:19:42.75\00:19:47.50 So in remembrance so-- the Bible does say 00:19:47.53\00:19:49.22 or Jesus does really say, I'm in this bread. 00:19:49.25\00:19:52.25 No, what's important is, 00:19:52.28\00:19:55.15 the reason why they used the Seders 00:19:55.18\00:19:58.96 to show that there is no temple sacrificial symbolic in it. 00:19:58.99\00:20:04.36 It's all symbolic and if you go to Matthew-- 00:20:04.39\00:20:08.49 if you go to Matthew it's very interesting. 00:20:08.52\00:20:10.56 Matthew 26 it says, Jesus it says that. 00:20:10.59\00:20:14.35 Matthew 26:26 "As they were eating, 00:20:14.38\00:20:18.03 after that He haven't eaten Jesus takes the bread." 00:20:18.06\00:20:21.92 This is what happens at the Seder today, 00:20:21.95\00:20:24.32 after there is a meal, there is a Seder 00:20:24.35\00:20:27.20 and then there is what's known as Afikoman. 00:20:27.23\00:20:29.95 Right, the last thing that you eat. 00:20:29.98\00:20:31.98 Afikoman, it's a Greek word for dessert. 00:20:32.01\00:20:36.35 But they didn't have this cake and stuff like this back then 00:20:36.38\00:20:40.67 for them dessert was aftertaste. 00:20:40.70\00:20:43.76 So this they break this little bread, little Matzah 00:20:43.79\00:20:49.27 and they eat it to create the aftertaste. 00:20:49.30\00:20:51.88 Aftertaste is the good memory trigger 00:20:51.91\00:20:56.21 and so Jesus takes this Afikoman 00:20:56.24\00:20:59.70 and He says, that's my body, 00:20:59.73\00:21:01.98 that's what has to be your aftertaste, 00:21:02.01\00:21:05.45 that's what has to stay in your memory, 00:21:05.48\00:21:09.02 the fact that I'm dying for you. 00:21:09.05\00:21:13.69 And of course we have to also remember 00:21:13.72\00:21:16.19 that in the Jewish tradition there is a cup 00:21:16.22\00:21:19.41 sitting on the table that old book. 00:21:19.44\00:21:22.97 Nobody drinks and the Elijah-- 00:21:23.00\00:21:25.62 It's a long story but to make it short, 00:21:25.65\00:21:28.32 of course Elijah didn't die. 00:21:28.35\00:21:30.48 So Jews believe that Elijah may actually come-- 00:21:30.51\00:21:34.02 Come back. And visit them. 00:21:34.05\00:21:36.32 And even drink the Passover Seder. 00:21:36.35\00:21:39.16 I remember as a kid being asked to get up at one point 00:21:39.19\00:21:43.17 in the Seder in the meal and go and open the door 00:21:43.20\00:21:48.02 and everyone waits for a moment 00:21:48.05\00:21:50.02 to see if Elijah is going to come. 00:21:50.05\00:21:52.61 But it is interesting that the coming of Elijah 00:21:52.64\00:21:55.78 is described in the last Book 00:21:55.81\00:21:57.99 of the Old Testament the Malachi. 00:21:58.02\00:22:00.14 And it says that, when Elijah comes 00:22:00.17\00:22:02.42 that's when the day of the Lord comes, awesome and fearful. 00:22:02.45\00:22:07.25 And so nobody dare to drink that cup of Elijah 00:22:07.28\00:22:11.13 because that's the old judgments, you know, 00:22:11.16\00:22:15.00 and look what happens in Gethsemane. 00:22:15.03\00:22:17.96 Jesus sweats with blood and He says, 00:22:17.99\00:22:22.56 "Lord, Father, may take this cup passover Me. 00:22:22.59\00:22:27.38 " Notice that, may this cup passover Me. 00:22:27.41\00:22:30.31 He uses the passover. Really? Yeah, the word-- 00:22:30.34\00:22:34.19 Basically save me like you saved them or-- 00:22:34.22\00:22:36.48 Yeah, but then He says not thy will. 00:22:36.51\00:22:39.22 Let your will be done. Not my will. 00:22:39.25\00:22:41.44 Now I'm going to drink the Cup of Judgment upon myself. 00:22:41.47\00:22:43.88 I don't want to drink that Cup of Judgment. 00:22:43.91\00:22:46.39 I want that passover me, but it's not happening. 00:22:46.42\00:22:50.56 But that wasn't what He was brought to do. 00:22:50.59\00:22:52.85 Now, let's, you know, there's still one cup left, right? 00:22:52.88\00:22:56.98 Because we've talked about three cups. 00:22:57.01\00:22:58.79 Yeah, we talked about Cup of Sanctification, 00:22:58.82\00:23:02.79 Cup of the Plagues, after that they eat the meal and Afikoman, 00:23:02.82\00:23:08.79 then Cup of Redemption. 00:23:08.82\00:23:10.19 Which is the one He's saying take the sins-- 00:23:10.22\00:23:11.86 That's the blood and then the fourth cup. 00:23:11.89\00:23:13.21 And then the fourth cup He doesn't drink, right. 00:23:13.24\00:23:17.06 But, everybody else did. 00:23:17.09\00:23:18.12 Everyone else but He says I will not drink again with you. 00:23:18.15\00:23:21.17 That's the Cup of Praise. 00:23:21.20\00:23:22.76 Right, until I return, right. Awesome. 00:23:22.79\00:23:26.51 Which, yeah, it's awesome. 00:23:26.54\00:23:27.57 So we're gonna drink that fourth cup with Jesus? 00:23:27.60\00:23:29.16 So that's the one that He's looking forward to 00:23:29.19\00:23:32.39 sharing with us when He comes 00:23:32.42\00:23:35.47 in the clouds and comes to return. 00:23:35.50\00:23:37.71 So, you know, as you listen to this on today's program. 00:23:37.74\00:23:42.65 I hope that this has inspired you and moved you. 00:23:42.68\00:23:48.13 Rachel and I have a song to share. 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.50 And we're going to get ready 00:23:50.53\00:23:51.92 and Sasha is going to tell us about the song. 00:23:51.95\00:23:55.41 Well, this is an interesting song from Psalm 22. 00:23:55.44\00:24:02.20 And it's actually a prophetic song 00:24:02.23\00:24:05.26 in which David portrays himself 00:24:05.29\00:24:09.66 is portrayed as a suffering Messiah, 00:24:09.69\00:24:11.90 who is suffering the agonies of death 00:24:11.93\00:24:15.67 and that's one of the words, 00:24:15.70\00:24:18.09 "In you our fathers trusted," and we're now let sing. 00:24:18.12\00:24:22.24 [Singing in foreign language] 00:24:22.27\00:24:25.24 Well, amen and amen. 00:27:32.61\00:27:34.74 Listen, I really hope 00:27:34.77\00:27:36.82 that you have enjoyed our program today that, 00:27:36.85\00:27:39.47 you see through that Passover celebration 00:27:39.50\00:27:42.65 how Jesus revealed Himself. 00:27:42.68\00:27:45.13 May the Lord bless you and may He keep you 00:27:45.16\00:27:46.85 and may the Lord make His face to shine up on you 00:27:46.88\00:27:48.77 and be gracious to you. 00:27:48.80\00:27:50.33 May the Lord lift His countenance upon you 00:27:50.36\00:27:52.49 and bring you His peace. 00:27:52.52\00:27:54.61 Thank you and join us again on "Back to Our Roots." 00:27:54.64\00:27:57.75
