Very fragile. 00:01:33.44\00:01:35.75 Exactly, because you know that's the way life is, 00:01:35.78\00:01:38.92 but there is definitely some very strong 00:01:38.95\00:01:41.49 biblical origins to Sukkot 00:01:41.52\00:01:44.18 and may be more importantly 00:01:44.21\00:01:46.36 boy, there is some pictures of our Messiah of Jesus 00:01:46.39\00:01:50.46 that is found in the whole idea of Tabernacles 00:01:50.49\00:01:53.74 that we are gonna explore today. 00:01:53.77\00:01:55.48 So before we go much further 00:01:55.51\00:01:57.29 I'm going to invite our brother Alexander Bolotnikov, 00:01:57.32\00:02:00.56 we call him our scholar Dr. Sasha to join us 00:02:00.59\00:02:04.77 and we are gonna begin our discussion for today. 00:02:04.80\00:02:06.46 Sasha, how are you today? 00:02:06.49\00:02:07.52 Hey, Alex. Hey, Rachel. 00:02:07.55\00:02:09.15 Hey, Sasha. Good to see you. 00:02:09.18\00:02:10.70 So Sasha, today we are talking about Sukkot 00:02:10.73\00:02:13.99 and we want to jump right in on what the Bible, 00:02:14.02\00:02:18.05 what the Torah has to say about Sukkot? 00:02:18.08\00:02:21.11 Well, Sukkot first of all has been presented 00:02:21.14\00:02:25.45 as one of the three pilgrimage festivals. 00:02:25.48\00:02:29.03 First it appears in Exodus Chapter 23 00:02:29.06\00:02:33.14 as three festivals on which every Israelite 00:02:33.17\00:02:38.19 is supposed to come before the Lord to Jerusalem. 00:02:38.22\00:02:45.13 Second of all, this festival is connected with full harvest 00:02:45.16\00:02:50.65 which in Israel is the harvest of olives and grapes. 00:02:50.68\00:02:57.55 And of course, third, 00:02:57.58\00:03:00.06 Sukkot commemorates the events of Exodus 00:03:00.09\00:03:06.34 during the Sukkot it is commanded 00:03:06.37\00:03:10.17 for Israelites to live in booths and-- 00:03:10.20\00:03:16.54 Which is where we get that the name 00:03:16.57\00:03:19.06 that it's actually called right, the Sukkah. 00:03:19.09\00:03:20.83 Sukkah is a little tent, little booth 00:03:20.86\00:03:24.48 in a more fancy Tabernacle. 00:03:24.51\00:03:28.66 You know, so, this basically 00:03:28.69\00:03:32.27 and people are also told 00:03:32.30\00:03:36.15 to take the beautiful leaves, willows trees. 00:03:36.18\00:03:42.18 Like the myrtles. 00:03:42.21\00:03:43.24 The myrtles, they make such a kind of, 00:03:43.27\00:03:46.36 what is it like a bouquet or a ranch. 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.95 Probably the best way to explain. 00:03:48.98\00:03:50.47 Yeah, known as a lulav and then they have a citron. 00:03:50.50\00:03:55.13 Citron looks like a lumpy lemon. 00:03:55.16\00:03:57.61 Yes. You know, interesting. 00:03:57.64\00:04:00.71 I mean, that's what it looks like a big lumpy lemon. 00:04:00.74\00:04:03.04 And what's a citron. That's etrog. 00:04:03.07\00:04:06.56 It's a type of fruit. 00:04:06.59\00:04:08.50 Because the scripture says that 00:04:08.53\00:04:10.31 you are supposed to take the beautiful fruit, right. 00:04:10.34\00:04:13.75 And I think there have been a tradition was is that 00:04:13.78\00:04:16.32 it has this really nice smell 00:04:16.35\00:04:20.22 as well as it's like the-- it's the taste, yeah. 00:04:20.25\00:04:23.55 Yes, it kind of taste like a lemon, 00:04:23.58\00:04:26.47 but it's just beautiful. But the smell is really good. 00:04:26.50\00:04:29.64 I remember that you scratch the skin very lightly 00:04:29.67\00:04:32.26 and it has this really nice smell to it. 00:04:32.29\00:04:34.96 So are these more of like rabbinical traditions 00:04:34.99\00:04:37.69 that were taken to-- 00:04:37.72\00:04:38.91 Well, it's the-- I guess we would say 00:04:38.94\00:04:41.56 it's the rabbinical interpretation 00:04:41.59\00:04:43.05 of what the Bible said. 00:04:43.08\00:04:44.58 Yeah, because the Bible says, the Bible says, 00:04:44.61\00:04:46.73 beautiful fruit and that's how Rabbi is showed 00:04:46.76\00:04:50.21 that's the beautiful fruit. Makes sense. 00:04:50.24\00:04:52.65 So, and the other aspect is that 00:04:52.68\00:04:56.40 Sukkot actually concludes the ritual year of the sanctuary 00:04:56.43\00:05:04.40 with a big celebration and you go to you know, 00:05:04.43\00:05:09.76 we talked about Exodus 23, we talked about Leviticus 23, 00:05:09.79\00:05:14.86 Exodus 23 is the pilgrimage. 00:05:14.89\00:05:17.20 Leviticus 23-- Is the feast. 00:05:17.23\00:05:19.86 Is the description, the booth and-- 00:05:19.89\00:05:21.53 And Sukkot comes right on the hills of Yom Kippur 00:05:21.56\00:05:25.25 on the Day of Atonement. 00:05:25.28\00:05:26.64 And as we talked in our other program 00:05:26.67\00:05:29.49 in fact after the end of Yom Kippur, 00:05:29.52\00:05:32.37 that's when the sound, the Shofar, the ram's horn 00:05:32.40\00:05:37.20 and that's ram's horn heralds the coming of the Messiah, 00:05:37.23\00:05:43.23 so Sukkot is kind of a big messianic feast. 00:05:43.26\00:05:47.35 Which we are gonna get way into that as we move on. 00:05:47.38\00:05:50.61 And so, in the Book of Numbers Chapter 29 00:05:50.64\00:05:54.20 they show all kinds of sacrifices there you know, 00:05:54.23\00:05:57.77 you start with rams and bulls and you go 15 bulls 00:05:57.80\00:06:03.06 and you go all the way down to seven, 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.71 which makes a lots of sacrifice. 00:06:05.74\00:06:08.52 Yeah, yeah. Really. 00:06:08.55\00:06:10.72 So, I want to jump way ahead now 00:06:10.75\00:06:13.91 because I-- today, I have been 00:06:13.94\00:06:16.61 really excited about this program. 00:06:16.64\00:06:18.31 I want to spend the majority of our time now talking about Jesus 00:06:18.34\00:06:22.82 and how He is engaged in Sukkot and it's just amazing. 00:06:22.85\00:06:30.82 I need to set this up though 00:06:30.85\00:06:33.39 and talk just a little bit about 00:06:33.42\00:06:35.44 what the celebration of Sukkot was like in the first century. 00:06:35.47\00:06:42.16 There is a lot of writings. 00:06:42.19\00:06:44.21 Now, let me make it clear 00:06:44.24\00:06:45.61 that that the celebration that took place 00:06:45.64\00:06:48.04 and I'm gonna describe is not biblical. 00:06:48.07\00:06:51.27 This is rabbinic tradition, but nonetheless 00:06:51.30\00:06:54.29 this is what was happening at the time that Yeshua, 00:06:54.32\00:06:57.65 Jesus was walking on the face of the earth, okay. 00:06:57.68\00:07:01.78 It was a very old tradition that goes way back. 00:07:01.81\00:07:03.95 And that's very important to demonstrate it 00:07:03.98\00:07:07.31 because when you start looking 00:07:07.34\00:07:08.97 at the description of the Sukkot in John Chapter 7 00:07:09.00\00:07:15.55 and you compare with Book of Numbers-- They don't-- 00:07:15.58\00:07:18.94 They don't match and for many years I was studying this 00:07:18.97\00:07:24.62 and I couldn't understand, what is Jesus doing? 00:07:24.65\00:07:28.74 Because it is interesting that 00:07:28.77\00:07:31.40 John 7 gives a little reference very abbreviated. 00:07:31.43\00:07:36.67 So let me set the stage before we get ahead with John 7. 00:07:36.70\00:07:40.81 So what is written and the description that were given 00:07:40.84\00:07:46.08 is that on Sukkot-- In the Mishnah. 00:07:46.11\00:07:48.67 In the Mishnah, which is rabbinic writings. 00:07:48.70\00:07:52.14 I mean it's our best snapshot of what the history 00:07:52.17\00:07:55.33 and what the worship practice was like during that time period 00:07:55.36\00:07:59.65 that Sukkot was considered a great celebration, 00:07:59.68\00:08:03.33 right, a time of rejoicing 00:08:03.36\00:08:05.51 and on the temple, the temple mount as it were 00:08:05.54\00:08:10.15 the description is that there was four giant candelabras 00:08:10.18\00:08:14.80 they had four bowls containing oil with many gallons of oil. 00:08:14.83\00:08:20.20 That the wicks were the shredded clothes 00:08:20.23\00:08:22.93 the cloths of the priest that have been worn out 00:08:22.96\00:08:25.77 would be turned into wicks 00:08:25.80\00:08:27.34 that young boys would climb up great ladders 00:08:27.37\00:08:31.08 and would fill these bowls 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.42 and these menorahs or these big candelabras would be lit 00:08:33.45\00:08:37.46 and it's said that for miles and miles 00:08:37.49\00:08:40.01 you could see the mount that Jerusalem would be lit. 00:08:40.04\00:08:43.65 Because remember, it's not like today 00:08:43.68\00:08:45.04 where you have city lights or anything. 00:08:45.07\00:08:46.43 It would be basically pretty dark, 00:08:46.46\00:08:48.22 all they had where these little oil lamps. 00:08:48.25\00:08:49.86 So during that celebration these great candelabras would be lit 00:08:49.89\00:08:54.22 and everything would be illuminated 00:08:54.25\00:08:56.51 which one was an amazing thing. 00:08:56.54\00:08:58.36 You could see Jerusalem from miles away lit up 00:08:58.39\00:09:02.21 and then it culminated 00:09:02.24\00:09:04.96 with what they call the water libation ceremony 00:09:04.99\00:09:07.96 where the priest, the high priest would lead 00:09:07.99\00:09:10.70 a cast of all the priest 00:09:10.73\00:09:12.09 and they would do all types of acrobatics 00:09:12.12\00:09:14.72 the scripture or the Mishnah. 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.51 Talks on scriptures, the Mishnah said 00:09:16.54\00:09:18.37 that they juggled, that they dance 00:09:18.40\00:09:20.21 that they did all these things 00:09:20.24\00:09:21.44 as they paraded down the steps to the Pool of Siloam, okay. 00:09:21.47\00:09:26.40 And the high priest would take a pitcher 00:09:26.43\00:09:30.21 and would dip in and bring this water, right 00:09:30.24\00:09:33.66 and they would proceed back up 00:09:33.69\00:09:35.54 where they would begin to pour out the water. 00:09:35.57\00:09:38.76 So I want to turn it over-- 00:09:38.79\00:09:39.87 Upon the altar. Upon the altar. 00:09:39.90\00:09:41.31 So I want to turn over to Sasha, 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.75 because there are some biblical illusion 00:09:42.78\00:09:45.96 things that are happening here with the water libation 00:09:45.99\00:09:49.77 before we move on to Jesus. 00:09:49.80\00:09:51.56 Sasha, why don't you take it at this point? 00:09:51.59\00:09:53.82 Well, it is interesting that they were pouring the water 00:09:53.85\00:09:57.68 upon the brazen Altar of the temple. 00:09:57.71\00:10:01.63 It's old--it's against what is written in Leviticus 6. 00:10:01.66\00:10:06.99 In Leviticus 6, it says that the fire of the burnt offering 00:10:07.02\00:10:10.72 upon the altar cannot go out. 00:10:10.75\00:10:13.75 So on Sukkot, the fire actually 00:10:13.78\00:10:17.21 would be extinguished with that water. 00:10:17.24\00:10:20.14 And so in the Talmud it is-- 00:10:20.17\00:10:23.38 Which again is rabbinical writing. 00:10:23.41\00:10:25.00 Yes, it is written, why are they-- 00:10:25.03\00:10:27.98 on what biblical grounds do they do this 00:10:28.01\00:10:32.34 and they bring the text, it's Isaiah 12:6, 00:10:32.37\00:10:38.52 you shall pour out the water, 00:10:38.55\00:10:41.62 draw out the water from the springs of salvation. Wow. 00:10:41.65\00:10:47.71 And if you look at this text alone 00:10:47.74\00:10:51.07 you don't get what they are saying 00:10:51.10\00:10:53.85 but you have to see not only one verse, 00:10:53.88\00:10:57.27 you have to see it in a context. 00:10:57.30\00:10:59.79 The context of this is a beautiful 00:10:59.82\00:11:02.91 prophetic oracle of Isaiah that starts in Isaiah Chapter 11 00:11:02.94\00:11:08.77 and where it talks about the roots, 00:11:08.80\00:11:12.09 they shoot from the root of Jesse that comes 00:11:12.12\00:11:16.22 and the Sprit of the Lord-- Will rest upon Him. 00:11:16.25\00:11:19.53 Shall rest upon Him. 00:11:19.56\00:11:21.58 And then it says that, 00:11:21.61\00:11:23.66 that resting of the Spirit of the Lord 00:11:23.69\00:11:26.31 leads to the opening of the kingdom 00:11:26.34\00:11:28.88 where lion shall lie with the lamb. 00:11:28.91\00:11:32.04 You know, so this is what-- 00:11:32.07\00:11:34.72 this is the conclusion that Isaiah 12-- 00:11:34.75\00:11:37.80 I don't know who put this number 12 on this chapter 00:11:37.83\00:11:40.16 but, that's the conclusion, 00:11:40.19\00:11:41.44 that's the final like finale of this great oracle. 00:11:41.47\00:11:46.24 You know, that's like a final quote, 00:11:46.27\00:11:49.06 you shall draw the water from the springs of salvation 00:11:49.09\00:11:53.80 so it definitely talks about the great messianic kingdom 00:11:53.83\00:11:58.59 and by the way the Hebrew word for salvation 00:11:58.62\00:12:02.11 is Yeshua and that's the name. 00:12:02.14\00:12:04.99 His name. That the name Jesus. 00:12:05.02\00:12:06.96 Which is the most amazing thing because, you know, 00:12:06.99\00:12:09.40 not to digress too much but when the angel tells Mary 00:12:09.43\00:12:12.45 you shall call Him, doesn't say you shall call Him Jesus. 00:12:12.48\00:12:15.94 You shall call Him Yeshua, for He shall save His people. 00:12:15.97\00:12:19.85 And even in his name is salvation. 00:12:19.88\00:12:23.22 So, let's jump forward, Sasha, 00:12:23.25\00:12:25.78 because we are setting up the stage 00:12:25.81\00:12:27.84 for this amazing scene that's played out 00:12:27.87\00:12:31.10 and told to us in the Gospel of John 7:37. 00:12:31.13\00:12:35.52 Now let me read this passage, Sasha, 00:12:35.55\00:12:37.26 then we are gonna talk about it. 00:12:37.29\00:12:38.75 This is again John 7:37, "On the last day of the feast, 00:12:38.78\00:12:44.05 the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, 00:12:44.08\00:12:47.89 If anyone thirst, let him come to me, and drink. 00:12:47.92\00:12:52.87 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture says, 00:12:52.90\00:12:56.31 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" 00:12:56.34\00:13:02.83 So, now, let's put that back in the context 00:13:02.86\00:13:06.53 of what we just shared with the water libation ceremony 00:13:06.56\00:13:10.02 its connections to Isaiah 11. 00:13:10.05\00:13:12.12 And Sasha, when this scripture opens up and says, 00:13:12.15\00:13:14.85 on the last day of the feast the great day, 00:13:14.88\00:13:18.57 what is that talking about? 00:13:18.60\00:13:19.96 Well, again we have to go to rabbinic tradition, 00:13:19.99\00:13:22.52 that's a literally citation in Greek language 00:13:22.55\00:13:26.39 translated from Greek into English 00:13:26.42\00:13:28.77 but the original comes from Hebrew. 00:13:28.80\00:13:32.11 That's the last day of Sukkot, It's recorded in Numbers 29 00:13:32.14\00:13:39.91 it's called the Hoshana Rabbah. 00:13:39.94\00:13:43.37 So and now, that's the great day and we get from that this word. 00:13:43.40\00:13:48.98 Hosanna Hosanna, right. 00:13:49.01\00:13:51.23 So most people when we say the word Hosanna-- 00:13:51.26\00:13:57.47 We think of like a praised type of word. 00:13:57.50\00:13:59.63 Yeah, exactly. 00:13:59.66\00:14:00.69 But in the reality the word Hosanna or in Hebrew Hoshana 00:14:00.72\00:14:06.10 that's the same root the same word as Yeshua 00:14:06.13\00:14:11.08 but it's in the verbal form so it's like save us please. 00:14:11.11\00:14:15.63 Yeah, or save us now. Wow. 00:14:15.66\00:14:17.39 Emphatic, so when the people cried out Hosanna or Hosianna 00:14:17.42\00:14:22.95 what they were saying in essence is save us. 00:14:22.98\00:14:24.68 Save us. That's awesome. 00:14:24.71\00:14:26.83 Save us, isn't that amazing? 00:14:26.86\00:14:28.37 That's why it's called Hoshana Rabbah. 00:14:28.40\00:14:29.92 You know, like-- 00:14:29.95\00:14:30.98 And it's the great day of salvation. 00:14:31.01\00:14:32.47 Yeah, the great day of salvation. 00:14:32.50\00:14:34.28 Rab that's our make, Rab means great. 00:14:34.31\00:14:38.25 Okay, so great day of salvation. 00:14:38.28\00:14:40.24 That's the great-- great salvation. 00:14:40.27\00:14:42.29 So then listen to what Jesus said. 00:14:42.32\00:14:45.56 So He is there on the last great day Hoshana Rabbah 00:14:45.59\00:14:49.33 and He says, while the water libation ceremony is going on 00:14:49.36\00:14:53.83 they are pouring out the water on to the altar 00:14:53.86\00:14:56.13 and can you imagine being there 00:14:56.16\00:14:58.47 and Jesus may be points up in that direction 00:14:58.50\00:15:02.04 and He says, if anyone thirst let Him come to Me and drink 00:15:02.07\00:15:05.80 because whoever believes in Me as the scripture says, 00:15:05.83\00:15:09.37 which He is referring to Isaiah. Isaiah 6. 00:15:09.40\00:15:13.37 Out of His heart will flow rivers of living water. 00:15:13.40\00:15:17.01 I get goose bumps, when I think about that. 00:15:17.04\00:15:19.28 And it's interesting they go you know the song, 00:15:19.31\00:15:21.97 you Rachel, even sing this song, 00:15:22.00\00:15:24.50 Oo-shav-tem ma-yeem b'sa-sone that's exactly the text. 00:15:24.53\00:15:27.63 And that means? 00:15:27.66\00:15:28.69 You shall draw the water, draw forth the water 00:15:28.72\00:15:31.96 with rejoicing from the spring of salvation. 00:15:31.99\00:15:34.88 So, imagine this procession goes up to the hill 00:15:34.91\00:15:39.85 from the Pool of Siloam up to the temple mount 00:15:39.88\00:15:43.49 and Jesus stands by and say, I'm here, your salvation. 00:15:43.52\00:15:49.87 I'm here, you want to drink, 00:15:49.90\00:15:51.79 you don't go to that pool, you go to Me. 00:15:51.82\00:15:56.09 And what I recently discovered when I discovered that in - 00:15:56.12\00:16:01.45 it's actually a Jerusalem Talmud which is one of the authentic-- 00:16:01.48\00:16:05.35 Again, rabbinic writing. Rabbinic writing. 00:16:05.38\00:16:07.52 I start, I found this interesting commentary 00:16:07.55\00:16:11.77 because it says there that the water of libation 00:16:11.80\00:16:16.97 that was poured upon the altar represented the Holy Spirit. 00:16:17.00\00:16:22.79 It--my jaw dropped when I read it. 00:16:22.82\00:16:26.07 That the rabbis used the word Holy Spirit literally, 00:16:26.10\00:16:30.67 they would use you know, they sometimes used the divine spirit 00:16:30.70\00:16:33.87 you know like Ruach Ha-Kodesh, this one the Holy Spirit 00:16:33.90\00:16:36.68 and they say referring to one of the rabbinic authorities 00:16:36.71\00:16:40.61 who says, if anybody did not visit Jerusalem 00:16:40.64\00:16:45.14 during the ceremony of libation 00:16:45.17\00:16:47.46 he does not have the Holy Spirit. Wow. 00:16:47.49\00:16:52.23 And so it's like I was reading this 00:16:52.26\00:16:55.45 and the Book of John says, when he talks about 00:16:55.48\00:16:58.87 from His mist the flow there will be water flowing 00:16:58.90\00:17:05.05 and Jesus is-- then the next verse says, 00:17:05.08\00:17:08.55 Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit 00:17:08.58\00:17:13.47 that the believers were supposed to receive 00:17:13.50\00:17:16.44 but not yet have received this. 00:17:16.47\00:17:18.97 Not until He is crucified and died 00:17:19.00\00:17:21.35 and He sense the whole-- He talks about. 00:17:21.38\00:17:24.16 But, that you can see that what Jesus is telling 00:17:24.19\00:17:29.12 is very well known to the Jewish community that is you know, 00:17:29.15\00:17:35.09 we are going to be talking about this in our next show, 00:17:35.12\00:17:37.56 this is, Jesus is not bringing something absolutely new. 00:17:37.59\00:17:41.80 Oh, no, they completely understood 00:17:41.83\00:17:44.14 and then as we progress in the Gospel of John, 00:17:44.17\00:17:47.14 Jesus is going to begin-- 00:17:47.17\00:17:48.51 He is talking about I'm the light of the world. 00:17:48.54\00:17:51.35 In the same context of being able to point up 00:17:51.38\00:17:54.57 to these great candelabras 00:17:54.60\00:17:56.37 which was the only time of the year, 00:17:56.40\00:17:58.01 that something like this would happen 00:17:58.04\00:17:59.38 where all of Jerusalem would be lit from these 00:17:59.41\00:18:02.26 and He is declaring. 00:18:02.29\00:18:03.90 And by the way-- I'm the Lord. 00:18:03.93\00:18:05.43 And by the way the tradition of light 00:18:05.46\00:18:08.00 you know, often its-- people confuse the statement 00:18:08.03\00:18:10.94 I'm the light of the world with Hanukkah 00:18:10.97\00:18:13.89 but the tradition of light on the Sukkot 00:18:13.92\00:18:16.88 is connected with idea of creation. 00:18:16.91\00:18:19.74 Let there be light, I'm the light to the world, 00:18:19.77\00:18:23.42 you know, and it's in line 00:18:23.45\00:18:25.94 with what John records in his gospel, you know. 00:18:25.97\00:18:28.67 John refers to Genesis 1 00:18:28.70\00:18:30.76 from the very beginning of his gospel. 00:18:30.79\00:18:33.84 In the beginning was the word, he talks about creation 00:18:33.87\00:18:36.88 the next statement is light, exactly as in Genesis 1, 00:18:36.91\00:18:41.33 Let there be light. 00:18:41.36\00:18:42.91 So in Sukkot this is definitely an understanding, 00:18:42.94\00:18:48.51 Jews understand that this is not just a commemoration 00:18:48.54\00:18:52.42 of their experience in the desert. 00:18:52.45\00:18:55.75 This is also looking forward for earth made new, 00:18:55.78\00:19:01.55 you know, let there be light you know, 00:19:01.58\00:19:03.96 everything and Jesus, I'm that light. 00:19:03.99\00:19:06.08 So would you say that Christians should also 00:19:06.11\00:19:08.39 kind of may be celebrate feast like this today, 00:19:08.42\00:19:12.13 since we are also looking for the Messiah. 00:19:12.16\00:19:13.69 You know, whether the idea of celebration, 00:19:13.72\00:19:15.73 but certainly to connect and understand 00:19:15.76\00:19:18.87 how can they not be excited when they put it 00:19:18.90\00:19:22.03 in the context of exactly how Jesus revealed Himself 00:19:22.06\00:19:26.19 through what was going in the Sukkot 00:19:26.22\00:19:28.77 but when we take it even a step further. 00:19:28.80\00:19:31.11 Sasha, let's talk about how Sukkot is revealed 00:19:31.14\00:19:35.09 or spoken off at the very end. 00:19:35.12\00:19:37.90 I'm speaking of in Revelation Chapter 21, 00:19:37.93\00:19:41.08 it talks about Sukkot 00:19:41.11\00:19:43.36 and specifically there is a statement, 00:19:43.39\00:19:45.69 "Behold the dwelling place of God is with man, 00:19:45.72\00:19:48.47 He will dwell with them and they would his people 00:19:48.50\00:19:50.96 and God himself will be with them as their God." 00:19:50.99\00:19:54.58 So, is that-- that idea of dwelling 00:19:54.61\00:19:56.80 that would be you know, Sukkot, the tabernacle? 00:19:56.83\00:19:59.56 Exactly, this is-- it say, the dwelling place 00:19:59.59\00:20:02.25 they translate it in different way the word Shekinah 00:20:02.28\00:20:06.46 and Shekinah is actually often referred as a Sukkah 00:20:06.49\00:20:12.82 as that tent which God-- in which God sojourned 00:20:12.85\00:20:20.56 with His people through the desert. 00:20:20.59\00:20:23.53 And so now this image of that tent of the meeting 00:20:23.56\00:20:29.56 is transferred on to its untied typical fulfillment 00:20:29.59\00:20:35.66 which is New Jerusalem 00:20:35.69\00:20:39.14 and New Jerusalem is called that place of God's dwelling, 00:20:39.17\00:20:44.08 place of God's present 00:20:44.11\00:20:46.02 and that's basically what Sukkot is all about. 00:20:46.05\00:20:51.32 We in this season we are going through 00:20:51.35\00:20:55.32 three pilgrimage festivals, 00:20:55.35\00:20:58.27 we went, we talked about the Passover, 00:20:58.30\00:21:01.73 we talk about Sukkot, two pilgrimage festivals 00:21:01.76\00:21:05.51 there is also Shavuot but the Passover, you know, 00:21:05.54\00:21:09.48 It's like in a spring Passover indicates points to the Calvary 00:21:09.51\00:21:14.94 which is the beginning of salvation 00:21:14.97\00:21:18.18 that's our source of forgiveness. 00:21:18.21\00:21:20.47 Sukkot points to the conclusion of salvation. 00:21:20.50\00:21:25.50 So, Sukkot has always then had this messianic expectation, 00:21:25.53\00:21:32.41 this messianic fulfillment attached to it 00:21:32.44\00:21:34.61 even from a very Jewish perspective, right. 00:21:34.64\00:21:37.26 Absolutely, Absolutely. 00:21:37.29\00:21:38.80 Which I think, kind of brings around-- 00:21:38.83\00:21:41.45 I wanted to talk just a little bit 00:21:41.48\00:21:43.19 because I have always been intrigued by Mathew Chapter 17, 00:21:43.22\00:21:47.72 it's typically called the Mount of Transfiguration, right. 00:21:47.75\00:21:52.08 And we know the story that Jesus-- 00:21:52.11\00:21:54.83 He takes Peter and James and John 00:21:54.86\00:21:57.53 and Jesus goes up this hill or this mountain 00:21:57.56\00:22:03.01 and scripture says literally 00:22:03.04\00:22:04.83 that He is transfigured before them 00:22:04.86\00:22:06.99 but I have always imagined that this is like 00:22:07.02\00:22:09.39 the glory of God in that moment beginning to break out of Him 00:22:09.42\00:22:13.32 and He begins to shine with the glory of God, right. 00:22:13.35\00:22:17.28 And it literally says, that His face shown like the sun 00:22:17.31\00:22:21.90 and His cloths became white as light 00:22:21.93\00:22:24.97 which really sounds like descriptions 00:22:25.00\00:22:26.97 we find in Revelation, you know. 00:22:27.00\00:22:29.74 And Peter says to Jesus, 00:22:29.77\00:22:32.07 now I have always tried to picture this, 00:22:32.10\00:22:34.41 you know, here is Peter looking 00:22:34.44\00:22:36.27 and seeing Jesus like and he says, 00:22:36.30\00:22:37.76 Lord, is it good that we're here 00:22:37.79\00:22:40.60 but if You wish I will make three tents, 00:22:40.63\00:22:43.40 I will make three Sukkahs, right. 00:22:43.43\00:22:45.61 I will make three tabernacles for us, 00:22:45.64\00:22:47.90 one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah 00:22:47.93\00:22:50.44 because the scripture says that Moses and Elijah 00:22:50.47\00:22:53.12 appeared along with Him in that moment. 00:22:53.15\00:22:56.44 And I think so often people have looked at Peter 00:22:56.47\00:23:00.32 and like, oh, poor Peter He just didn't understand. 00:23:00.35\00:23:03.51 But in a way there was a connection there. 00:23:03.54\00:23:05.97 Right, Sasha? 00:23:06.00\00:23:07.03 Yeah, there was a connection 00:23:07.06\00:23:08.55 because what Peter sees, first of all he sees 00:23:08.58\00:23:12.84 two biblical heroes that have not died. 00:23:12.87\00:23:20.23 Right, the law and the prophets. 00:23:20.26\00:23:21.74 Yeah, two prophets you know, 00:23:21.77\00:23:23.79 he sees Elijah who was translated to heaven alive 00:23:23.82\00:23:27.58 and see Moses whose body in the grave was never found. 00:23:27.61\00:23:31.83 So here they are alive. 00:23:31.86\00:23:34.09 So, Peter thinks that Jesus-- 00:23:34.12\00:23:38.42 and here they see Jesus as you know, 00:23:38.45\00:23:41.52 literally divine Jesus, all right, I'm all ready. 00:23:41.55\00:23:45.04 This guy is definitely the Messiah. 00:23:45.07\00:23:46.53 Yeah, I'm already in heaven 00:23:46.56\00:23:48.17 so why not we celebrate the Sukkahs. 00:23:48.20\00:23:50.51 We make the Sukkahs and this is it, we're all done. 00:23:50.54\00:23:53.19 Yeah, so as we say we have come once again to the end 00:23:53.22\00:23:59.06 and it's my turn today to bring a song. 00:23:59.09\00:24:02.16 So I'm going to get ready 00:24:02.19\00:24:03.58 and you guys can talk about that just a little bit. 00:24:03.61\00:24:07.60 This song is Latter Rain 00:24:07.63\00:24:09.43 and Latter Rain is what actually provides 00:24:09.46\00:24:13.35 and solidifies the harvest in Israel 00:24:13.38\00:24:16.18 and since Sukkot is the feast of the last harvest 00:24:16.21\00:24:20.45 the full harvest that song is right there, 00:24:20.48\00:24:24.10 appropriate, so let's listen to Alex. 00:24:24.13\00:24:27.04 I love you, Lord with all my heart 00:24:30.11\00:24:37.77 I offer You thanksgiving 00:24:37.80\00:24:44.90 You have called me for Your own 00:24:44.93\00:24:52.42 It's through You that I live on 00:24:52.45\00:24:59.95 Oh, and I will sing Your praises once again 00:24:59.98\00:25:07.95 Oh, I love you, Lord with all my soul 00:25:11.14\00:25:19.10 I offer You Thanksgiving 00:25:19.13\00:25:25.90 You inscribed upon my heart 00:25:25.93\00:25:33.58 Remove the stony part 00:25:33.61\00:25:40.66 Oh, Lord redeem Your people return again 00:25:40.69\00:25:48.66 And I sing praises to Your name 00:25:51.74\00:25:59.74 Your glory is my refrain 00:25:59.77\00:26:06.91 Oh, Lord, pour on your people the latter rain 00:26:06.94\00:26:14.91 Oh, I love you, Lord with all my mind 00:26:18.29\00:26:26.20 I offer You Thanksgiving 00:26:26.23\00:26:32.96 And I sing praises to Your name 00:26:32.99\00:26:40.40 Oh, Your glory is my refrain 00:26:40.43\00:26:47.55 Oh, Lord, pour on your people the latter rain 00:26:47.58\00:26:55.55 Oh, Lord, pour on your people The latter rain 00:27:01.97\00:27:09.97 Lord, we do pray that You would pour out 00:27:22.79\00:27:24.73 upon all of Your people the latter rain. 00:27:24.76\00:27:27.54 You know Sukkot is all about this temporary time, 00:27:27.57\00:27:32.17 this expectation that there's got to be so much more, Rachel, 00:27:32.20\00:27:36.30 that God is going to pour out His spirit upon His people. 00:27:36.33\00:27:42.71 And we just pray that you would be so blessed. 00:27:42.74\00:27:45.76 So may the Lord bless you and may He keep you 00:27:45.79\00:27:48.00 and may the Lord make His face to shine upon you 00:27:48.03\00:27:50.16 and be gracious to you. 00:27:50.19\00:27:51.37 May the Lord lift His countess upon you 00:27:51.40\00:27:53.47 and bring you His peace. 00:27:53.50\00:27:54.99 Bless you and join us again on "Back to our Roots." 00:27:55.02\00:27:58.58
