What is the celebration of Passover all about? 00:00:01.09\00:00:04.12 If you would like to find out, 00:00:04.15\00:00:05.67 that and much more stick around today on Back to Our Roots. 00:00:05.70\00:00:10.48 Well, welcome once again to Back to Our Roots. 00:00:30.73\00:00:33.59 I'm Pastor Alex Schlusser. And I'm Rachael Hyman. 00:00:33.62\00:00:36.86 And we're so happy that you've decided to join us today. 00:00:36.89\00:00:40.37 Today, as always Rachael, I think we have 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.66 a really interesting program. So do we. 00:00:42.69\00:00:44.55 Today we're going to be talking about Passover. 00:00:44.58\00:00:47.84 Rachael, tell us just a little bit 00:00:47.87\00:00:49.77 about your experience as growing up with Passover 00:00:49.80\00:00:51.89 because I know you have some and so do I. 00:00:51.92\00:00:53.77 Oh, sure, I remember hiding the afikoman. 00:00:53.80\00:00:56.40 The what? 00:00:56.43\00:00:57.99 The special piece of matzah where if we find it, 00:00:58.02\00:01:01.07 we'd get a ton of money actually as a prize. Oh, wow. 00:01:01.10\00:01:03.35 That's better than whatever happened for us. 00:01:03.38\00:01:05.34 Well, what happened to you guys? 00:01:05.37\00:01:06.47 Well, we would maybe get lucky 00:01:06.50\00:01:08.20 and we get a cookie or something. 00:01:08.23\00:01:09.34 Oh, really? 00:01:09.37\00:01:10.40 But, yeah, you know, I remember 00:01:10.43\00:01:12.66 for us with Passover was the one time of the year 00:01:12.69\00:01:14.86 that our whole family would come together. 00:01:14.89\00:01:17.44 And I say, our whole family, 00:01:17.47\00:01:18.51 I'm talking about extended aunts, 00:01:18.54\00:01:20.14 uncles, cousins and everything. 00:01:20.17\00:01:21.82 And you know what, what's my funniest memory is that 00:01:21.85\00:01:25.38 when you got to a certain age 00:01:25.41\00:01:26.90 you got to move away from the kids table. 00:01:26.93\00:01:29.00 Oh, yeah. You know, what I mean? 00:01:29.03\00:01:30.77 All the adults would be in the living room 00:01:30.80\00:01:32.51 in a big table. 00:01:32.54\00:01:33.57 And then you know, we kids would be maybe in the kitchen 00:01:33.60\00:01:36.53 or something in a little cart table kind of thing 00:01:36.56\00:01:38.53 or something like that, you know 00:01:38.56\00:01:40.56 and then the day, it gets so excited, 00:01:40.59\00:01:42.95 we get to move to the table. 00:01:42.98\00:01:44.91 But you know, all joking aside, 00:01:44.94\00:01:47.24 I also remember how serious it was. 00:01:47.27\00:01:49.82 How my grandparents really took it to heart 00:01:49.85\00:01:52.13 and how we would read the story of the Passover 00:01:52.16\00:01:56.20 every year as part of the Seder 00:01:56.23\00:01:59.19 what it's called, the actual Passover, 00:01:59.22\00:02:01.43 celebration or meal. 00:02:01.46\00:02:03.34 And you know, I wonder Rachael, when we talk about Passover, 00:02:03.37\00:02:10.19 what would you say that most people would even say, 00:02:10.22\00:02:13.04 you know, what is Passover? 00:02:13.07\00:02:14.34 Oh, you know, God rescuing the Jews from Egypt, 00:02:14.37\00:02:17.38 when the angel passed over their homes-- 00:02:17.41\00:02:21.11 they didn't get the plague on them, 00:02:21.14\00:02:22.50 that went to the rest of the Egyptians 00:02:22.53\00:02:24.60 and so God delivered them. Right. 00:02:24.63\00:02:27.05 You know, It's interesting to that-- 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.83 I don't know that I'm really made the connection 00:02:29.86\00:02:33.32 growing up when I was young. Same here. 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.37 That it was just so much more a time 00:02:35.40\00:02:37.45 of family getting together. 00:02:37.48\00:02:38.81 Eating, matzo ball soup. Eating and all of that. 00:02:38.84\00:02:41.40 You know, there was this long ceremony thing of remembering, 00:02:41.43\00:02:45.08 you know, my grandfather reading 00:02:45.11\00:02:47.42 and us thinking, okay, when is it over so we get the-- 00:02:47.45\00:02:49.30 It's so boring. Yeah. 00:02:49.33\00:02:51.03 Right, because it was so long but now, 00:02:51.06\00:02:53.45 is it interesting how we come to our Messiah 00:02:53.48\00:02:56.53 to Yeshua to Jesus. 00:02:56.56\00:02:58.57 And all of a sudden it takes on such a whole different meaning. 00:02:58.60\00:03:02.22 And that's really what we want to get in today. 00:03:02.25\00:03:04.29 So we would like to invite 00:03:04.32\00:03:06.15 our Residence Scholar Alexander Bolotnikov. 00:03:06.18\00:03:10.45 We call him Sasha, our Rabbinic Wikipedia. 00:03:10.48\00:03:14.77 And hi, Sasha, how are you doing today? 00:03:14.80\00:03:16.18 Hey. It's good have you with us. 00:03:16.21\00:03:17.34 Hi, Sasha. Hi, Rachael. 00:03:17.37\00:03:19.28 So we're talking about Passover today, Sasha. 00:03:19.31\00:03:22.14 And we're gonna jump right in with both feet. 00:03:22.17\00:03:24.67 We want to talk about 00:03:24.70\00:03:25.82 the biblical origins of Passover. 00:03:25.85\00:03:27.77 Because I mean without the Bible 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.58 we wouldn't know anything about Passover, right 00:03:29.61\00:03:31.56 and that's where it comes from. 00:03:31.59\00:03:33.27 Primarily from Exodus Chapter 12. 00:03:33.30\00:03:36.56 So Sasha, why don't you get us started? 00:03:36.59\00:03:39.50 Well, Passover is indeed described in Exodus Chapter 12. 00:03:39.53\00:03:46.21 This is I would say, a little pause before the last plague, 00:03:46.24\00:03:52.58 the plague that would basically kill the first born of Egypt. 00:03:52.61\00:03:59.96 And this is one of the important chapters 00:03:59.99\00:04:04.99 in which we see the nature of God's charter. 00:04:05.02\00:04:08.43 Because people often misunderstand God 00:04:08.46\00:04:11.68 in this Egyptian plagues. 00:04:11.71\00:04:14.59 You know, people often even-- there are some people they, 00:04:14.62\00:04:17.84 who even accused Jews in genocide 00:04:17.87\00:04:21.35 against Egyptian, there are even people 00:04:21.38\00:04:23.73 who say, God is just so mean killing the first born and-- 00:04:23.76\00:04:29.48 But that wasn't his idea though, right? Absolutely not. 00:04:29.51\00:04:32.38 Yeah, see that's what people miss, 00:04:32.41\00:04:33.59 because the Bible does talk about that 00:04:33.62\00:04:35.51 Pharaoh was actually the one who proclaim the last plague. 00:04:35.54\00:04:39.59 Well, what actually the Passover idea is that anyone-- 00:04:39.62\00:04:46.98 yes, there was Angel of Death, 00:04:47.01\00:04:50.64 about to kill the first born. 00:04:50.67\00:04:52.61 But if someone actually take-- 00:04:52.64\00:04:55.58 want to take heed to what God is saying, 00:04:55.61\00:04:58.88 they got to take the lamb 00:04:58.91\00:05:01.24 and kill this lamb in their houses 00:05:01.27\00:05:06.14 and put smear the blood of this lamb on the doorpost 00:05:06.17\00:05:13.15 and that would save the first born. 00:05:13.18\00:05:16.06 Right. And then they would eat it. 00:05:16.09\00:05:18.12 Let me read a little portion here from Exodus Chapter 12. 00:05:18.15\00:05:23.56 "In this manner you shall eat it." 00:05:23.59\00:05:25.42 It's talking about the lamb. 00:05:25.45\00:05:27.66 "With your belt fastened, with your sandals on your feet, 00:05:27.69\00:05:30.48 with your staff in your hand. 00:05:30.51\00:05:32.11 You shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover. 00:05:32.14\00:05:36.17 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, 00:05:36.20\00:05:39.46 and I will strike all the firstborn 00:05:39.49\00:05:41.56 in the land of Egypt, both man and beast, 00:05:41.59\00:05:45.00 and on all the Gods of Egypt 00:05:45.03\00:05:47.43 I will execute judgments. I am the Lord. 00:05:47.46\00:05:50.43 The blood shall be a sign for you, 00:05:50.46\00:05:53.19 on the houses where you are. 00:05:53.22\00:05:55.36 And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, 00:05:55.39\00:05:58.67 and no plague will befall you to destroy you, 00:05:58.70\00:06:01.67 when I strike the land of Egypt." 00:06:01.70\00:06:03.80 Now I really want to throw something in here 00:06:03.83\00:06:07.11 that I think that there were quite a few Egyptians 00:06:07.14\00:06:11.05 who after the plagues had all happen the way that they did. 00:06:11.08\00:06:14.87 By the time they got to the last one, 00:06:14.90\00:06:16.77 I'll bet you there were Egyptians 00:06:16.80\00:06:17.97 that didn't want to take a chance 00:06:18.00\00:06:19.72 that Moses was gonna be wrong, 00:06:19.75\00:06:22.00 that God wasn't gonna come through. 00:06:22.03\00:06:23.68 And I'll bet you there were Egyptians 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.55 that were in houses with those Hebrews 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.01 with the blood on the door. 00:06:28.04\00:06:29.09 Help save us. Absolutely. 00:06:29.12\00:06:31.28 And this is why, the notion which is very popular 00:06:31.31\00:06:34.91 unfortunately that Passover is Jewish 00:06:34.94\00:06:37.58 and people would say, Jewish Passover. 00:06:37.61\00:06:39.81 This is absolutely wrong. It was for everybody. 00:06:39.84\00:06:41.65 It was for everybody. 00:06:41.68\00:06:42.95 Yeah, more so, if God intended to save Jews 00:06:42.98\00:06:49.13 as a select cast of people, 00:06:49.16\00:06:51.66 He would not have them kill the lamb 00:06:51.69\00:06:54.58 and smear the blood on the doorpost. 00:06:54.61\00:06:56.88 It was more to save anyone 00:06:56.91\00:07:00.32 who actually believes the word of God. Right. 00:07:00.35\00:07:03.60 And actually indeed we have to know this, 00:07:03.63\00:07:06.50 that it says in verse-- in Exodus Chapter 13 that, 00:07:06.53\00:07:12.26 mixed multitude of people 00:07:12.29\00:07:14.53 with together with Israelites left Egypt. 00:07:14.56\00:07:18.20 It means all of those who decided not to take a chance, 00:07:18.23\00:07:21.64 who decided to accept the step of faith. 00:07:21.67\00:07:25.01 It is also important to see, how and why God made them 00:07:25.04\00:07:29.99 actually put the blood on a doorpost. 00:07:30.02\00:07:33.60 And you know for Jews--for Israelites, 00:07:33.63\00:07:36.87 you know, talking about Israelites at this time. 00:07:36.90\00:07:39.84 You know, 12 tribes of Israelites, 00:07:39.87\00:07:41.96 it wasn't a problem. 00:07:41.99\00:07:43.82 They were known and they were hated already, 00:07:43.85\00:07:47.10 because of their previous plagues. 00:07:47.13\00:07:50.27 For Egyptians it was a challenge. 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.82 You know, Egyptian who decided to save his son, 00:07:52.85\00:07:59.39 basically put himself at huge risk 00:07:59.42\00:08:02.63 in front of his family, his neighbors 00:08:02.66\00:08:05.63 because now he identifies himself with enemies. 00:08:05.66\00:08:10.09 So that was a very strong step of faith for those Egyptians. 00:08:10.12\00:08:15.89 Not to actually quietly 00:08:15.92\00:08:18.49 in the middle of the night come to the Israel, 00:08:18.52\00:08:21.45 and then say, can I be in your house, can I also get the lamb-- 00:08:21.48\00:08:24.68 Right, because it would be obvious 00:08:24.71\00:08:25.98 if their son survived after this plague was over. 00:08:26.01\00:08:29.77 Everybody would know how their son survived. 00:08:29.80\00:08:32.99 But you know, what it's afterwards 00:08:33.02\00:08:35.78 and now it's beforehand. 00:08:35.81\00:08:37.64 Remember 14 days before this was announced. 00:08:37.67\00:08:41.93 Take the lamb, let it sit in your house, 00:08:41.96\00:08:45.59 you know, 14 days Egyptians make known to their friends 00:08:45.62\00:08:50.66 and families that they are actually 00:08:50.69\00:08:53.22 accepting the truth from God of Israel. Yeah. 00:08:53.25\00:08:59.11 You know, we don't want to skip over the fact to that. 00:08:59.14\00:09:02.07 You know, this as I said is 00:09:02.10\00:09:04.09 the end the combination of the series of plagues 00:09:04.12\00:09:07.85 and it's important to understand too that 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.47 what God is doing here through these plagues 00:09:10.50\00:09:12.86 is not just proving that He is great and powerful 00:09:12.89\00:09:16.14 but He is dismantling 00:09:16.17\00:09:18.42 the Egyptian religious system of the time. 00:09:18.45\00:09:21.48 Not really for the Egyptians, 00:09:21.51\00:09:23.57 but for the Hebrews, for the Israelites 00:09:23.60\00:09:25.76 because they have been in captivity for so long. 00:09:25.79\00:09:28.92 They had become a custom, 00:09:28.95\00:09:31.72 had become connected to this religious system of worship. 00:09:31.75\00:09:36.28 And one plague at a time God dismantles it. 00:09:36.31\00:09:39.56 Now this is the whole idea Sasha, 00:09:39.59\00:09:44.51 of slaughtering the lamb 00:09:44.54\00:09:46.31 and of placing the blood on the lintel 00:09:46.34\00:09:48.34 on the doorpost of the house. 00:09:48.37\00:09:50.65 You know, this is gonna-- 00:09:50.68\00:09:51.84 the idea of the blood is gonna be 00:09:51.87\00:09:53.83 something that once God removes 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.68 the children of Israel out of Egypt 00:09:55.71\00:09:57.44 and begins to form them as a people 00:09:57.47\00:09:59.95 He's gonna build very strongly on 00:09:59.98\00:10:01.60 because this will become 00:10:01.63\00:10:04.42 really the sacrificial system 00:10:04.45\00:10:06.80 with the idea of blood, right? Yeah, exactly. 00:10:06.83\00:10:08.97 Because you know, I'll tell you Alex, 00:10:09.00\00:10:11.59 I don't know how you personally, 00:10:11.62\00:10:15.85 maybe you Rachael, how you took it. 00:10:15.88\00:10:17.94 But for me you know, studying the Bible, 00:10:17.97\00:10:23.31 studying it from the, you know, like many Christians do 00:10:23.34\00:10:26.69 from the New Testament perspective, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.56 also it was-- always the question. 00:10:28.59\00:10:30.63 Now, Christians you talked about the lamb, 00:10:30.66\00:10:33.63 Christians would say right away, "Oh, this is Jesus." 00:10:33.66\00:10:37.03 You know, it's so obvious, 00:10:37.06\00:10:39.24 you know, when the New Testament-- 00:10:39.27\00:10:41.05 We never even thought such a thing 00:10:41.08\00:10:42.62 growing up as a Jewish family. 00:10:42.65\00:10:44.14 Exactly. You know, yeah, this is behold the Lamb of God, 00:10:44.17\00:10:49.19 John Chapter 1. 00:10:49.22\00:10:50.75 For our Passover is Christ, Romans. 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.41 It's so obvious if you're born and grown up 00:10:54.44\00:10:57.85 in Christian culture. 00:10:57.88\00:10:59.54 How are you going to say to-- 00:10:59.57\00:11:03.10 explain to a person, a Jewish person 00:11:03.13\00:11:08.12 who basis his faith on the Torah that this is actually Jesus. 00:11:08.15\00:11:13.29 The only place that does it is actually Passover. Yeah. 00:11:13.32\00:11:17.50 It doesn't talk specifically about Jesus. 00:11:17.53\00:11:20.74 But talk to you about the lamb 00:11:20.77\00:11:22.10 which is where we want to go to talk about. 00:11:22.13\00:11:24.57 It talks about the substitute. 00:11:24.60\00:11:27.18 Here is-- Which is the lamb. Exactly. 00:11:27.21\00:11:29.26 The lamb, it explains that the lamb is not the attempt 00:11:29.29\00:11:32.83 to kind of pay to God something, this is substitute. 00:11:32.86\00:11:36.96 Either if the lamb dies, or your first born die. 00:11:36.99\00:11:40.39 And that's the idea of the key point of our beliefs. 00:11:40.42\00:11:45.27 The substitutionary death of the Messiah 00:11:45.30\00:11:50.00 who dies so that we could live. Right. 00:11:50.03\00:11:53.59 Yeah, in the previous show 00:11:53.62\00:11:55.06 we spend some time talking about Yom Kippur 00:11:55.09\00:11:58.99 and the idea of atonement 00:11:59.02\00:12:04.39 and we have this, this idea of blood being shed 00:12:04.42\00:12:11.45 and God through Moses is gonna later teach this idea 00:12:11.48\00:12:15.78 that the life of the flesh is in the blood. 00:12:15.81\00:12:18.13 And I have given blood to make atonement for you. 00:12:18.16\00:12:20.85 And is this the--maybe the first real picture of God 00:12:20.88\00:12:27.05 beginning to paint this for His people. 00:12:27.08\00:12:29.27 Exactly. This is exactly that. 00:12:29.30\00:12:31.91 You know, the death and the spilling of the blood 00:12:31.94\00:12:36.06 that provides life for this first born. 00:12:36.09\00:12:40.22 Actually this is not the first, 00:12:40.25\00:12:42.08 you have another important anchor point 00:12:42.11\00:12:44.86 which is Genesis 22 00:12:44.89\00:12:47.85 when Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac. 00:12:47.88\00:12:52.39 And then suddenly God says stop and Abraham does-- 00:12:52.42\00:12:57.45 and Isaac is not being killed but Abraham turn his eyes 00:12:57.48\00:13:02.13 and sees the ram and sacrifices in place of Isaac. 00:13:02.16\00:13:06.57 And that's a picture of that substitution. 00:13:06.60\00:13:09.18 Yeah. And that's exactly. 00:13:09.21\00:13:10.79 These are two episodes in the Torah. 00:13:10.82\00:13:13.20 But this is the first time where blood is-- 00:13:13.23\00:13:15.61 God actually has the shedding of blood, right? 00:13:15.64\00:13:19.67 It's actually in this particular episode 00:13:19.70\00:13:23.59 it is important that the blood is actually on the doorpost. 00:13:23.62\00:13:28.55 It's a little--you know, the Passover sacrifice 00:13:28.58\00:13:31.74 is a little different than a temple sacrifice. 00:13:31.77\00:13:34.05 Yeah, totally. 00:13:34.08\00:13:35.79 Because in the temple, 00:13:35.82\00:13:38.47 Passover sacrifice, in fact is very unique. 00:13:38.50\00:13:41.89 More so, like when we talk about the later Passovers. 00:13:41.92\00:13:45.92 In Leviticus 23, they have commemorative Passover offering 00:13:45.95\00:13:52.53 which is different. 00:13:52.56\00:13:54.11 Only one time in history did Israelites 00:13:54.14\00:13:59.19 actually had a lamb slaughtered in their house 00:13:59.22\00:14:03.95 and then place the blood on the doorpost. 00:14:03.98\00:14:06.87 Because later we come Deuteronomy 16 00:14:06.90\00:14:09.88 and Deuteronomy 16 strictly forbids slaughtering 00:14:09.91\00:14:15.20 the lambs for Passover anywhere except the altar. 00:14:15.23\00:14:20.80 So that's the little different, 00:14:20.83\00:14:23.61 the Passover is the unique experience 00:14:23.64\00:14:26.19 and in this case slaughtering-- 00:14:26.22\00:14:29.67 the demonstration of the blood 00:14:29.70\00:14:32.86 was it's actually a public expression, 00:14:32.89\00:14:36.58 public manifestation of the person's belief 00:14:36.61\00:14:42.03 in God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:14:42.06\00:14:45.94 God creator of heaven and earth, not God the Pharaoh. 00:14:45.97\00:14:50.64 So this becomes like you said. This is a very personal thing. 00:14:50.67\00:14:54.10 Scripture talks about how each family 00:14:54.13\00:14:58.06 and it goes into of its 00:14:58.09\00:14:59.54 you know, too much for one family 00:14:59.57\00:15:01.06 then they were join together, but the idea is that 00:15:01.09\00:15:03.45 as you're saying that it's a very personal 00:15:03.48\00:15:05.25 each family was to bring that lamb in 00:15:05.28\00:15:08.47 and whenever I think of that 00:15:08.50\00:15:10.86 it starts moving me to think about 00:15:10.89\00:15:14.67 how they had to bring this cute little animal into their house 00:15:14.70\00:15:20.15 and for those prescribed days they had to watch the lamb. 00:15:20.18\00:15:25.02 And the idea being is they had to guarantee 00:15:25.05\00:15:28.12 that this lamb was perfect that it wasn't sick 00:15:28.15\00:15:30.09 that there was nothing wrong with it, right? 00:15:30.12\00:15:31.92 Because it had to be a perfect offer. 00:15:31.95\00:15:33.40 Yeah, that has to be a perfect offer. 00:15:33.43\00:15:35.87 So here they are and I don't know 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.25 if any of you have ever seen a little lamb, 00:15:38.28\00:15:42.54 but it's like one of the cutest little things in God's creation. 00:15:42.57\00:15:46.42 I mean amazing. 00:15:46.45\00:15:47.68 And could you imagine the children, 00:15:47.71\00:15:51.71 how the whole family must have become 00:15:51.74\00:15:54.06 really attached to this animal. 00:15:54.09\00:15:56.67 Because it wasn't, just okay, 00:15:56.70\00:15:57.90 bring it in and slaughter it. 00:15:57.93\00:15:58.96 No, it was bring the animal in 00:15:58.99\00:16:00.67 and the animal had to be with them in their home 00:16:00.70\00:16:03.47 and I think that God was trying to really build-- 00:16:03.50\00:16:04.91 For how long? For 10 days. 00:16:04.94\00:16:07.63 Yeah, to build the connection 00:16:07.66\00:16:10.11 that there was a real cost that was gonna be paid 00:16:10.14\00:16:14.92 that for them to sacrifice this animal. 00:16:14.95\00:16:18.31 Hope she'd see how the bad sin is. 00:16:18.34\00:16:19.75 Well, and to see the reactions of the children 00:16:19.78\00:16:23.73 must have had in the whole family to now. 00:16:23.76\00:16:26.38 God saying, okay, we've watch this little lamb 00:16:26.41\00:16:29.59 and it's perfect and it's fine and it's probably bonded to us 00:16:29.62\00:16:32.23 like a little dog and now-- And that's now-- 00:16:32.26\00:16:35.34 Now we have to kill it. 00:16:35.37\00:16:36.53 And that's now like, this cute little cuddly pet, 00:16:36.56\00:16:41.94 is supposed to die or otherwise your old son will die. 00:16:41.97\00:16:48.40 And of course the choice is very obvious 00:16:48.43\00:16:50.98 if you believe that it happens 00:16:51.01\00:16:53.59 and that's the real effect which God wanted to seek. 00:16:53.62\00:16:57.26 You know, you can't say that, 00:16:57.29\00:17:00.11 you know, people of Israel at this time look ahead 00:17:00.14\00:17:03.78 and they you're painted 00:17:03.81\00:17:05.22 you know, the cross and Calvary and all of this. 00:17:05.25\00:17:08.29 But they were clearly saw that for all this years ahead, 00:17:08.32\00:17:13.68 when the sanctuary will be built, 00:17:13.71\00:17:15.70 when they will be coming to bring their offerings 00:17:15.73\00:17:18.90 that they will have very clear picture 00:17:18.93\00:17:21.77 that these offerings are not like a pagan offerings 00:17:21.80\00:17:25.69 that this offerings were not like to pay to God 00:17:25.72\00:17:29.09 or to feed God. 00:17:29.12\00:17:30.52 This offerings were so that substitutionary in nature 00:17:30.55\00:17:35.91 to substitute for their sin 00:17:35.94\00:17:39.38 so that they would live while the animal dies. 00:17:39.41\00:17:44.54 Now I do want to point out also that 00:17:44.57\00:17:47.00 though in the context of that time period 00:17:47.03\00:17:50.73 and their experience I don't know 00:17:50.76\00:17:53.27 that it's necessarily inappropriate 00:17:53.30\00:17:55.61 as we where we are understanding all that we do 00:17:55.64\00:18:00.23 as we begin to see how Jesus fulfilled the Passover 00:18:00.26\00:18:03.65 because He does in a beautiful way 00:18:03.68\00:18:06.38 we're gonna talk about that. 00:18:06.41\00:18:08.30 It's not inappropriate for us to look back 00:18:08.33\00:18:10.87 at that first Passover experience 00:18:10.90\00:18:13.91 and see the types and shadows 00:18:13.94\00:18:15.42 that really existed that for our benefit. 00:18:15.45\00:18:19.07 Because you are right, 00:18:19.10\00:18:21.64 their understanding of what was happening 00:18:21.67\00:18:24.17 is by no means what our understanding would be. 00:18:24.20\00:18:26.84 But if we don't seek to grasp 00:18:26.87\00:18:29.78 what it was they really experienced, 00:18:29.81\00:18:31.93 then I think the problem becomes 00:18:31.96\00:18:33.70 we place erroneous notions. 00:18:33.73\00:18:36.61 And we don't really get the depth 00:18:36.64\00:18:38.38 of what exactly Jesus did 00:18:38.41\00:18:41.75 and how beautifully, He is truly the lamb. 00:18:41.78\00:18:45.35 But God didn't mean it for be to like a type, right? 00:18:45.38\00:18:47.97 To help for them to understand that. 00:18:48.00\00:18:49.03 But again we have the physical and we have the spiritual. 00:18:49.06\00:18:51.84 Right. You know. 00:18:51.87\00:18:53.97 So, Sasha, let's talk about 00:18:54.00\00:18:56.56 how Jesus fulfills the Passover now. 00:18:56.59\00:18:59.09 Well, first of all right away, 00:18:59.12\00:19:01.86 John the Baptist proclaims himself-- 00:19:01.89\00:19:04.79 him as a Lamb of God. 00:19:04.82\00:19:07.28 Right, when we saw Him behold the Lamb of God. 00:19:07.31\00:19:08.37 Right away, that's how He introduces Him 00:19:08.40\00:19:11.82 to his disciples right away. 00:19:11.85\00:19:14.41 And it's interesting that, 00:19:14.44\00:19:16.77 when he preaches before Jesus comes 00:19:16.80\00:19:18.85 you know, he preaches a strong message of repentance, 00:19:18.88\00:19:22.55 he preaches a strong message the Lord is coming. 00:19:22.58\00:19:25.30 And then as soon as that Messiah is coming, 00:19:25.33\00:19:29.15 he says that's the first time behold the lamb. 00:19:29.18\00:19:31.97 Behold the lamb. 00:19:32.00\00:19:33.04 He is gonna take away the sins of the world. 00:19:33.07\00:19:36.07 Now if you look from the first introduction of Jesus, 00:19:36.10\00:19:40.68 all the way back to the last hours of Jesus' life 00:19:40.71\00:19:45.37 you see how this was fulfilled. 00:19:45.40\00:19:49.28 As I mentioned the slaughtering the lamb in houses 00:19:49.31\00:19:53.80 was one time of history event. 00:19:53.83\00:19:56.47 Leviticus 23 when they institute Passover 00:19:56.50\00:20:00.46 as a temple festival, 00:20:00.49\00:20:03.42 they are changing the time of Passover sacrifice 00:20:03.45\00:20:08.50 into the last hours of 14th of Nisan, 00:20:08.53\00:20:15.11 because it was the other way around in Jude and Exodus. 00:20:15.14\00:20:19.91 The first hour as soon as the dawn 00:20:19.94\00:20:25.00 as soon as the sunset, 00:20:25.03\00:20:28.30 Israelites were supposed in their houses 00:20:28.33\00:20:30.53 to slaughter the lamb. 00:20:30.56\00:20:32.32 In the temple as soon as the 14th of Nisan 00:20:32.35\00:20:36.05 is about to end. 00:20:36.08\00:20:38.02 Right before the sunsets still in the 14th of Nisan, 00:20:38.05\00:20:42.77 they are supposed, they are supposed 00:20:42.80\00:20:44.67 to slaughter the lamb. 00:20:44.70\00:20:46.24 And it was interesting ceremony 00:20:46.27\00:20:48.36 because people were lining up to the temple 00:20:48.39\00:20:51.78 with their own lambs 00:20:51.81\00:20:53.76 and then they had around the temple 00:20:53.79\00:20:56.05 lots of like fireplaces where people would go 00:20:56.08\00:21:02.25 and roast them and they would sit 00:21:02.28\00:21:04.76 and congregate around the temple 00:21:04.79\00:21:06.85 and would eat this lamb. 00:21:06.88\00:21:08.59 And so right on that day, Jesus is arrested. 00:21:08.62\00:21:12.96 Right on that day, Jesus is tried. 00:21:12.99\00:21:15.69 Right on that day, 00:21:15.72\00:21:17.33 the high priest rush to push on Pilate 00:21:17.36\00:21:23.60 to make a decision, 00:21:23.63\00:21:25.43 because they don't want to defile themselves 00:21:25.46\00:21:29.79 since they are supposed to actually offer this lamb. 00:21:29.82\00:21:34.60 And so here Jesus walks carrying the cross, 00:21:34.63\00:21:40.26 He's on cross to the place of His execution. 00:21:40.29\00:21:44.75 And these priest are-- 00:21:44.78\00:21:46.80 are preparing in front of the big crowd 00:21:46.83\00:21:50.07 at the same time to start, 00:21:50.10\00:21:54.21 to slaughter the first altar, first lamb. Right. 00:21:54.24\00:21:59.83 And then suddenly we know what the story. 00:21:59.86\00:22:02.33 And Luke, it's interesting how the Gospel of Luke, 00:22:02.36\00:22:05.51 at the hours when it was happened 00:22:05.54\00:22:07.76 corresponds exactly with Mishnaic tradition 00:22:07.79\00:22:11.03 when it would happen. 00:22:11.06\00:22:13.01 Right at the hour Jesus says, "It is completed." 00:22:13.04\00:22:19.38 And He makes his last breath 00:22:19.41\00:22:24.50 and the earthquake start 00:22:24.53\00:22:27.43 and there is mayhem in the temple, 00:22:27.46\00:22:31.77 the ceremony is completely messed up 00:22:31.80\00:22:37.74 because the real lamb had just been slaughtered. 00:22:37.77\00:22:43.95 That's beautiful-- 00:22:43.98\00:22:46.96 It gives me goose bumps even just to think about it. 00:22:46.99\00:22:51.23 You know, that here He was just as God had promised 00:22:51.26\00:22:57.59 our Messiah, our Redeemer 00:22:57.62\00:22:59.72 and you know, God doesn't do 00:22:59.75\00:23:03.28 anything by coincidence, does He? 00:23:03.31\00:23:05.32 Just as He played it out so far before Jesus had come, 00:23:05.35\00:23:10.59 you know, it's also very interesting too 00:23:10.62\00:23:13.27 as if we back it up 00:23:13.30\00:23:14.39 just a little bit from that point 00:23:14.42\00:23:16.15 when He is on the cross to even to His entry into Jerusalem 00:23:16.18\00:23:21.56 and how He's the leaders of the day 00:23:21.59\00:23:25.79 Pharisees, Sadducees, whatever 00:23:25.82\00:23:27.65 they are constantly challenging Him 00:23:27.68\00:23:30.25 and trying to find fault in Him. 00:23:30.28\00:23:33.10 And it's almost as if God has put that perfect lamb 00:23:33.13\00:23:37.11 in front of them and said, inspect him 00:23:37.14\00:23:40.37 and see if there is anything wrong with him 00:23:40.40\00:23:42.98 and you have some people 00:23:43.01\00:23:44.56 that have seen Him and got close to Him 00:23:44.59\00:23:46.27 and I'm sure fallen love with him. 00:23:46.30\00:23:49.80 It's quite the story. Yeah. 00:23:49.83\00:23:52.71 And it's interesting that the whole-- 00:23:52.74\00:23:54.63 if you look at the whole gospel of Mathew, 00:23:54.66\00:23:57.10 this is kind of a-- we don't have time, 00:23:57.13\00:23:59.67 but it's a sort of rerun of the Exodus. 00:23:59.70\00:24:03.89 So, Rachael and I are gonna join together for the first time 00:24:03.92\00:24:09.55 since we've been doing these programs. 00:24:09.58\00:24:11.45 And we're gonna do a song together. 00:24:11.48\00:24:12.67 And Sasha, I think you're gonna tell everyone about the song. 00:24:12.70\00:24:17.12 Behold how good and how pleasant it is 00:24:17.15\00:24:22.21 to be with brethren together. 00:24:22.24\00:24:25.98 That's Psalm 133, 00:24:26.01\00:24:29.72 beautiful song of the pilgrims who 00:24:29.75\00:24:35.09 that was saying during the time 00:24:35.12\00:24:37.10 when they ascended to the temple of God 00:24:37.13\00:24:40.78 on the Passover to watch the Passover sacrifice. 00:24:40.81\00:24:46.09 Behold how good and how pleasant it is 00:25:56.74\00:26:01.15 For brothers to dwell together 00:26:01.18\00:26:04.99 Behold how good and how pleasant it is 00:26:05.02\00:26:09.55 For brothers to dwell together 00:26:09.58\00:26:13.57 In unity In unity 00:26:13.60\00:26:17.72 La la lai La la la lai lai 00:26:17.75\00:26:21.65 In unity In unity 00:26:21.68\00:26:26.07 La la lai La la la lai lai 00:26:26.10\00:26:30.17 The Psalmist said, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is 00:27:29.52\00:27:33.80 for brethren to dwell together in unity." 00:27:33.84\00:27:36.49 And that's what our Messiah Jesus has done. 00:27:36.52\00:27:39.25 He has given us a way to come together, one in Him. 00:27:39.28\00:27:44.60 We thank you so much for joining us, 00:27:44.63\00:27:46.75 may the Lord bless you and may He keep you 00:27:46.78\00:27:48.60 and may the Lord make His face to shine upon you 00:27:48.63\00:27:50.51 and be gracious to you. 00:27:50.54\00:27:51.96 May the Lord lift His countenance upon you 00:27:51.99\00:27:54.34 and bring you His peace. 00:27:54.37\00:27:56.36 God bless and join us again 00:27:56.39\00:27:58.52 on Back to Our Roots. 00:27:58.55\00:28:00.14
