Have you ever wondered 00:00:01.38\00:00:02.44 what the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur is all about? 00:00:02.47\00:00:05.62 Well, stay tuned with us and you will find out. 00:00:05.65\00:00:08.18 Welcome once again to Back to Our Roots. 00:00:28.59\00:00:31.24 I'm Pastor Alex Schlusser and this is my co-host-- 00:00:31.27\00:00:33.89 Rachael Hyman. 00:00:33.92\00:00:34.99 And we want to welcome you to our program. 00:00:35.02\00:00:36.80 We have a really, really interesting program today. 00:00:36.83\00:00:39.97 Rachel, we are gonna be talking about the holiday Yom Kippur. 00:00:40.00\00:00:45.09 The Levitical holiday also know possibly as a feast day 00:00:45.12\00:00:51.11 but we want to get into this 00:00:51.14\00:00:53.64 and I think that you have some experiences 00:00:53.67\00:00:56.67 may be growing up with Yom Kippur? 00:00:56.70\00:00:59.65 Yeah, I remember fasting as a young child 00:00:59.68\00:01:02.55 because you know that was what we are supposed to do 00:01:02.58\00:01:04.29 as a Jewish family is to fast on Yom Kippur. 00:01:04.32\00:01:06.98 I didn't know completely exactly what I was doing 00:01:07.01\00:01:09.57 but when I think of Yom Kippur, 00:01:09.60\00:01:11.20 yeah I think of memories of fasting, 00:01:11.23\00:01:13.44 memories of repentance coming back to God things like that. 00:01:13.47\00:01:19.69 All right, I know my memories 00:01:19.72\00:01:22.38 of going to the synagogue with my grandparents 00:01:22.41\00:01:25.83 and not being able to wear any leather. 00:01:25.86\00:01:29.38 Right-- Oh, I didn't know that. 00:01:29.41\00:01:31.05 Yeah, we dressed in-- I couldn't have a leather belt 00:01:31.08\00:01:35.60 and I remember couldn't wear dress shoes 00:01:35.63\00:01:37.95 I had this plain white sneakers that we wore. 00:01:37.98\00:01:40.81 So they have to do with like humidity? 00:01:40.84\00:01:42.05 Yeah, they had the idea of reflecting yourself 00:01:42.08\00:01:44.73 not dressing up and I remember 00:01:44.76\00:01:46.29 like my grandfather he wouldn't shave, 00:01:46.32\00:01:49.14 we weren't suppose to brush our teeth. Wow. 00:01:49.17\00:01:51.54 Right, all those things 00:01:51.57\00:01:53.54 but you know what the crazy thing was Rachel, 00:01:53.57\00:01:55.33 is that I don't think I ever really understood 00:01:55.36\00:01:58.76 what I was doing. Yeah. 00:01:58.79\00:02:01.05 Or why you know, it was a bunch of things that I was told. 00:02:01.08\00:02:03.62 Well, these are the things you know, 00:02:03.65\00:02:04.81 we are going right, and we are supposed to. 00:02:04.84\00:02:08.87 Well, we hope on today's program 00:02:08.90\00:02:11.20 that we are gonna be able to open up 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.85 and get into some of the depth of Yom Kippur. Awesome. 00:02:13.88\00:02:17.04 And we would like at this time to bring out 00:02:17.07\00:02:20.46 Alexander Bolotnikov we call him Sasha. 00:02:20.49\00:02:22.73 He is our--we call him our resident scholar. 00:02:22.76\00:02:26.90 He is--has his doctorial or is a PhD. 00:02:26.93\00:02:32.13 And Sasha adds a whole another layer to our conversations. 00:02:32.16\00:02:37.02 We are gonna jump right into it if that's okay with you, Sasha. 00:02:37.05\00:02:39.77 Because we want to, we want to get into what-- 00:02:39.80\00:02:41.82 what does the Bible teach about Kippur about Yom Kippur? 00:02:41.85\00:02:47.19 And I think we want to launch out of the Book of Leviticus, 00:02:47.22\00:02:51.51 specifically Leviticus Chapter 10, 00:02:51.54\00:02:53.37 because God speaks to Moses 00:02:53.40\00:02:55.92 and Moses is actually talking now to the people. 00:02:55.95\00:02:59.72 And He is not very happy with them 00:02:59.75\00:03:03.08 in this passage if you remember. 00:03:03.11\00:03:05.39 And He says I quote "Since it is a thing most holy 00:03:05.42\00:03:09.13 and has been given to you that you 00:03:09.16\00:03:11.78 might bear the iniquity of the congregation, 00:03:11.81\00:03:14.19 to make atonement for them." 00:03:14.22\00:03:16.32 And I think when we talk about Yom Kippur 00:03:16.35\00:03:18.76 that's one of the things that seems to run around in our mind 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.92 this idea of atonement and what really--what does that mean 00:03:21.95\00:03:27.46 and what is Moses trying to say to the people. 00:03:27.49\00:03:30.54 Yeah, that's very important question 00:03:30.57\00:03:34.13 we need to really look into 00:03:34.16\00:03:37.27 because indeed the English word atonement or reconciliation 00:03:37.30\00:03:43.84 doesn't really reflect the notion 00:03:43.87\00:03:48.19 the Hebrew notion of Kippur which is in the Bible. 00:03:48.22\00:03:52.20 Which is actually the-- if we go into the Old Testament 00:03:52.23\00:03:55.36 and we look at the word that atonement 00:03:55.39\00:03:58.23 is translated from it's the Hebrew word Kippur. 00:03:58.26\00:04:01.25 Yes, yes, it's a Hebrew word Kippur, 00:04:01.28\00:04:05.10 the verb Kiper 00:04:05.13\00:04:08.39 which is you know and that particular text Alex, 00:04:08.42\00:04:14.19 which you just read, you know, it talks about the stories 00:04:14.22\00:04:20.11 about Nadab and Abihu sons of Aaron 00:04:20.14\00:04:23.76 who went with a foreign fire into the sanctuary 00:04:23.79\00:04:27.98 and their life was taken. 00:04:28.01\00:04:30.40 And priests--their brothers, their siblings were so scared 00:04:30.43\00:04:34.76 they stopped performing the service 00:04:34.79\00:04:36.91 and so Moses comes and he sees the goat 00:04:36.94\00:04:40.57 which was a sin offering it wasn't eaten. 00:04:40.60\00:04:45.16 That's what supposed to happen the priest 00:04:45.19\00:04:48.62 when a person sins he brings a goat or a ram 00:04:48.65\00:04:56.29 to sacrifice for his sin 00:04:56.32\00:04:59.37 and the priest makes Kippur 00:04:59.40\00:05:03.25 by eating the meat of that ram 00:05:03.28\00:05:07.79 and Moses sees it's not done 00:05:07.82\00:05:10.56 and he explains that this is the most holy. 00:05:10.59\00:05:14.21 By the way, the second time 00:05:14.24\00:05:15.70 the word most holy is used in scripture 00:05:15.73\00:05:18.40 besides the most holy compartment of the sanctuary. 00:05:18.43\00:05:21.66 The flesh of the sin offering is the most holy 00:05:21.69\00:05:26.38 and he says it is given to you 00:05:26.41\00:05:28.65 and now we have two phrases 00:05:28.68\00:05:32.17 that are basically explaining the same thing different words. 00:05:32.20\00:05:37.13 First they say to bear away the inequity of the people 00:05:37.16\00:05:42.33 or to carry the inequity of the people 00:05:42.36\00:05:44.52 and then the second one two in English 00:05:44.55\00:05:47.27 it says to make atonement. 00:05:47.30\00:05:49.22 I don't really know it's very hard 00:05:49.25\00:05:51.41 to find a proper English word. 00:05:51.44\00:05:53.26 I would just say to make Kippur. 00:05:53.29\00:05:55.73 So Kippur is the process of someone bearing away, 00:05:55.76\00:06:03.04 carrying the sins of the sinner. 00:06:03.07\00:06:06.55 So we are-- what we are trying to come 00:06:06.58\00:06:09.53 to an understanding here is that I know 00:06:09.56\00:06:12.35 there are so many different teachings 00:06:12.38\00:06:14.68 about the idea of atonement 00:06:14.71\00:06:16.73 and this carrying of sin and so on. 00:06:16.76\00:06:21.34 In Leviticus Chapter 23 there is quite a bit 00:06:21.37\00:06:25.34 that said about how God wanted the children of Israel 00:06:25.37\00:06:29.05 to actually effect this holiday 00:06:29.08\00:06:32.10 or what they were supposed to do. 00:06:32.13\00:06:33.78 And the scripture talks about that this is the time 00:06:33.81\00:06:35.67 one of a holy convocation right it's a holy gathering 00:06:35.70\00:06:39.75 but the Lord also says that this is a time 00:06:39.78\00:06:43.24 that you are to afflict yourselves. 00:06:43.27\00:06:45.21 And I had mentioned in the opening 00:06:45.24\00:06:47.21 that typically within the Jewish community 00:06:47.24\00:06:50.01 there is different things that happened. 00:06:50.04\00:06:51.21 You mentioned the idea of fasting 00:06:51.24\00:06:53.33 and I talked about how I remember 00:06:53.36\00:06:55.26 my grandfather wouldn't shave and didn't brush his teeth 00:06:55.29\00:06:57.94 and we were dressed all with no leather 00:06:57.97\00:07:01.05 and these were all interpretations 00:07:01.08\00:07:02.46 right of trying to fulfill that 00:07:02.49\00:07:06.76 but it's interesting that at the end of this passage 00:07:06.79\00:07:09.36 in Leviticus 23:28 it says, 00:07:09.39\00:07:12.24 "It is a day of atonement, 00:07:12.27\00:07:13.41 to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God." 00:07:13.44\00:07:18.42 So we started moving in the idea 00:07:18.45\00:07:21.94 you know I guess the central one of the central things 00:07:21.97\00:07:24.76 in Yom Kippur is--is this idea that so frequently talks Sasha, 00:07:24.79\00:07:30.63 and I know you and I had discussions about this. 00:07:30.66\00:07:33.22 And I know that you are not comfortable with it 00:07:33.25\00:07:37.02 and so I want to bring it up 00:07:37.05\00:07:38.33 because I want to talk about this 00:07:38.36\00:07:40.51 that this concept of Kippur of Yom Kippur 00:07:40.54\00:07:44.33 being called the day of covering, right. 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.96 I know, you know, you have heard it 00:07:46.99\00:07:48.62 and I am sure many of those watching have heard it. 00:07:48.65\00:07:51.83 But I think that there is a much better way to understand that. 00:07:51.86\00:07:56.67 Exactly, because to cover often they translate 00:07:56.70\00:08:01.30 you know to Kippur like to cover that's a wrong translation. 00:08:01.33\00:08:06.35 I'm not going to get into 00:08:06.38\00:08:08.51 all needy greedy things of Hebrew verbs 00:08:08.54\00:08:11.31 but this is absolute misunderstanding of the Hebrew. 00:08:11.34\00:08:16.18 Indeed the word in a different in a completely different form 00:08:16.21\00:08:20.32 is used in Genesis Chapter 6 00:08:20.35\00:08:24.00 when the God says to Noah to use tar to cover-- 00:08:24.03\00:08:30.34 to seal the ark, but this has nothing to do. 00:08:30.37\00:08:35.34 You know, many people take it into metaphor, 00:08:35.37\00:08:39.11 and this is not about metaphor. 00:08:39.14\00:08:41.46 You know, coming back to carrying away the sins. 00:08:41.49\00:08:44.81 What does it mean to carry away the sin? 00:08:44.84\00:08:47.07 To carry away the sins of somebody 00:08:47.10\00:08:49.22 meaning to take responsibility. 00:08:49.25\00:08:51.99 It's not a band-aid. It's not a-- 00:08:52.02\00:08:53.96 Well, and it's not only is it not a band-aid 00:08:53.99\00:08:55.92 which is a great idea because the band-aid 00:08:55.95\00:08:57.75 all it does is cover up the wound, 00:08:57.78\00:09:00.99 right, but the wound is still there. 00:09:01.02\00:09:03.18 And when we are talking the concept of Kippur 00:09:03.21\00:09:05.88 being a covering it's like just draping something over the sin 00:09:05.91\00:09:10.00 but the sin is still there. It's still covered. 00:09:10.03\00:09:12.41 Even when we talk about the blood of our Messiah 00:09:12.44\00:09:15.55 that's in the wrong context. 00:09:15.58\00:09:17.06 So I want to continue now, I'm not leaving this idea 00:09:17.09\00:09:20.39 because let's go to Leviticus Chapter 16 00:09:20.42\00:09:24.75 because I think we can really get an idea 00:09:24.78\00:09:27.14 of what exactly is happening 00:09:27.17\00:09:28.66 when we started talking about the two goats. Yeah, exactly. 00:09:28.69\00:09:30.99 Because you did mentioned one of them already. 00:09:31.02\00:09:33.32 Yeah, one of them that this is the heart of the Rachel 00:09:33.35\00:09:38.23 there are two goats that are taken. 00:09:38.26\00:09:42.13 One is called the goat for the Lord 00:09:42.16\00:09:45.81 and the blood of the goat for the Lord 00:09:45.84\00:09:48.46 is first of all the goat for the Lord is slain. 00:09:48.49\00:09:52.89 His blood or its blood is taken 00:09:52.92\00:09:57.24 into the most holy place 00:09:57.27\00:09:59.79 and sprinkled upon the top part of the Ark of the Covenant. 00:09:59.82\00:10:05.05 It's called the mercy seat. 00:10:05.08\00:10:06.34 In English, it's called the mercy seat. 00:10:06.37\00:10:08.97 I believe Luther was pretty good 00:10:09.00\00:10:11.04 by translating it the throne of grace. 00:10:11.07\00:10:14.14 Okay, now, that point 00:10:14.17\00:10:17.69 when the high priest enters in there by the way 00:10:17.72\00:10:20.88 that's the only time through the whole year 00:10:20.91\00:10:24.33 that the Kohen Gadol the high priest 00:10:24.36\00:10:26.88 was even allowed to enter into the most holy place. Right? 00:10:26.91\00:10:30.24 And by the way the place that mercy seat in Hebrew 00:10:30.27\00:10:34.49 there is a word Kippur which is used 00:10:34.52\00:10:36.54 you know for translators as atonement. 00:10:36.57\00:10:39.02 And then there is a word kapporet 00:10:39.05\00:10:41.19 it's the same it's the noun 00:10:41.22\00:10:43.29 from which is derived from Kippur the same root. 00:10:43.32\00:10:47.99 So it's like--it's the place of removal of sins 00:10:48.02\00:10:52.95 that's what the top part 00:10:52.98\00:10:54.55 of the Ark of the Covenant is all about. 00:10:54.58\00:10:56.96 So the first part of the ceremony 00:10:56.99\00:10:59.08 then with the first goat that's for the Lord 00:10:59.11\00:11:02.99 we have the sacrifice and the blood that's carried in 00:11:03.02\00:11:06.45 and is sprinkled upon the top. 00:11:06.48\00:11:09.94 Exactly. On the mercy seat. 00:11:09.97\00:11:11.37 And that symbolizes that God 00:11:11.40\00:11:14.44 is pulling this sin disease from us 00:11:14.47\00:11:19.86 taking it like a surgeon with a scalpel 00:11:19.89\00:11:24.71 that goes in and pulls away the tumor. 00:11:24.74\00:11:27.52 That's what through the sanctuary service 00:11:27.55\00:11:31.47 that's what is done. 00:11:31.50\00:11:32.97 How did the humans, 00:11:33.00\00:11:34.27 how did the people cooperate with God in this process? 00:11:34.30\00:11:36.84 What was their job? 00:11:36.87\00:11:38.16 Well, let's look at this way, 00:11:38.19\00:11:40.75 talk in medicine that's probably the best analogy. 00:11:40.78\00:11:43.42 If somebody has a pain and sin is painful. Right. 00:11:43.45\00:11:46.55 We suffer from our sin, we want to this to go away. 00:11:46.58\00:11:50.82 Well, if you have a pain you can take a pain killer. 00:11:50.85\00:11:53.87 But the problem is if we do not address the cause, 00:11:53.90\00:11:57.51 you know, if you have a headache you take Tylenol 00:11:57.54\00:12:00.71 but if you keeping Tylenols it stop helping you. 00:12:00.74\00:12:04.30 Then you take Vicodin and Codeine 00:12:04.33\00:12:06.77 who knows what you become addicted. 00:12:06.80\00:12:08.75 The problem is we people 00:12:08.78\00:12:11.07 and that's a big mistake in Christianity. 00:12:11.10\00:12:12.97 People care about forgiveness. 00:12:13.00\00:12:15.45 Well, God has forgiven but if you keep going 00:12:15.48\00:12:18.53 only for forgiveness, you become--you don't change. 00:12:18.56\00:12:22.47 You don't change from the inside in some aspects. 00:12:22.50\00:12:24.90 That's really what has to happen. 00:12:24.93\00:12:26.61 Right, and that's the point of that is-- Exactly. 00:12:26.64\00:12:28.80 If we don't get to the root of the problem 00:12:28.83\00:12:33.17 all we are doing is treating the symptoms. 00:12:33.20\00:12:34.82 So, let's-- let's move on 00:12:34.85\00:12:36.69 and we want to talk about the second goat now 00:12:36.72\00:12:39.31 because that becomes the heart 00:12:39.34\00:12:40.86 of how we are gonna get to 00:12:40.89\00:12:42.42 understanding what Kippur actually is. 00:12:42.45\00:12:44.03 Yeah, that's the second aspect. 00:12:44.06\00:12:46.11 First of all this pulling the sin away 00:12:46.14\00:12:48.43 but in the Old Testament in the Torah 00:12:48.46\00:12:53.49 if someone carries the sin, he carries responsibility. 00:12:53.52\00:12:57.56 So the priest when they ate the meat of the sin 00:12:57.59\00:13:02.41 offering every-- you know, from every sinner 00:13:02.44\00:13:05.20 they would carry the responsibility, 00:13:05.23\00:13:07.11 they would carry the burden of sins of these people. 00:13:07.14\00:13:11.08 You know, they couldn't bear it for so long. 00:13:11.11\00:13:13.73 I mean then you have a high priest. 00:13:13.76\00:13:15.54 High priest comes with a bullock 00:13:15.57\00:13:17.56 he takes the sins of all these priest upon himself. 00:13:17.59\00:13:20.94 Well, high priest if we are talking about this high priest 00:13:20.97\00:13:24.54 and according to Hebrews that's Yeshua, Jesus. 00:13:24.57\00:13:28.14 Well, if we live Yeshua carrying the sins of everybody, 00:13:28.17\00:13:34.23 is He the one responsible for the evil of the world? 00:13:34.26\00:13:37.77 No. So that's why you have a second goat. 00:13:37.80\00:13:41.68 This goat is specifically that the biggest mistake 00:13:41.71\00:13:46.07 which English Bibles have they translate it 00:13:46.10\00:13:50.73 as a based on a Greek translation a scapegoat. 00:13:50.76\00:13:55.10 And the term scape, you know, you look up scape 00:13:55.13\00:13:57.97 there is no such a word scape 00:13:58.00\00:13:59.85 unless it's together with the goat. Or e-scape. 00:13:59.88\00:14:02.90 Yeah, that is escape but there is no scape. 00:14:02.93\00:14:07.01 So the point is its very wake. 00:14:07.04\00:14:09.45 In Hebrew, its goat for Azazel. 00:14:09.48\00:14:12.64 Azazel or some people say Azazel its--in Hebrew it's clear 00:14:12.67\00:14:17.51 It's devil it's a demon of the desert. 00:14:17.54\00:14:21.10 So that's what the second goat represents. 00:14:21.13\00:14:24.31 The second goat does not die. 00:14:24.34\00:14:27.52 The second goat waits until the high priest 00:14:27.55\00:14:31.03 comes out of the most holy and what the high priest does 00:14:31.06\00:14:35.56 he comes he lays he lance his hands 00:14:35.59\00:14:39.66 up on the head of this goat for Azazel 00:14:39.69\00:14:43.90 and pours basically it says confesses 00:14:43.93\00:14:47.18 but he transfers all the sins of Israel upon this goat. 00:14:47.21\00:14:52.18 And it says, now this goat 00:14:52.21\00:14:54.21 carries the sins of Israel into the desert. 00:14:54.24\00:14:57.27 So that really becomes the-- 00:14:57.30\00:15:00.90 the important thing to catch the difference 00:15:00.93\00:15:03.50 when we talk about how many people 00:15:03.53\00:15:05.72 will use this idea of Yom Kippur being a covering 00:15:05.75\00:15:08.70 and the correct way to understand it then 00:15:08.73\00:15:11.11 it is a transfer exactly. 00:15:11.14\00:15:13.47 It's a removal. It's a time when the evil is removed. 00:15:13.50\00:15:15.20 But its true transfer, okay, it was important you know 00:15:15.23\00:15:18.58 that the high priest would lay his hands upon the goat 00:15:18.61\00:15:21.80 and God afforded this way that the burden 00:15:21.83\00:15:25.18 that had been placed on Him by the sin 00:15:25.21\00:15:27.47 had now been carried over to the goat. 00:15:27.50\00:15:29.79 And as Sasha said, the goat would be lead out 00:15:29.82\00:15:31.71 into the wilderness carrying the sin away from the camp. 00:15:31.74\00:15:34.87 Okay, so I have a question. 00:15:34.90\00:15:36.29 You know, as you guys are talking 00:15:36.32\00:15:37.79 I hear a lot of symbolism here. 00:15:37.82\00:15:40.05 I'm guessing nothing exactly 00:15:40.08\00:15:42.59 magical happens through all these symbolisms-- symbols 00:15:42.62\00:15:44.92 do you think that God is 00:15:44.95\00:15:46.59 purposely putting all these symbols 00:15:46.62\00:15:49.26 in process here to teach us something 00:15:49.29\00:15:51.81 or is it a supernatural thing that God commands 00:15:51.84\00:15:55.47 as those symbols are being carried for. 00:15:55.50\00:15:56.95 Oh, think about this way. 00:15:56.98\00:15:58.55 We are taught through some 00:15:58.58\00:16:01.45 like children are taught by using a felt. 00:16:01.48\00:16:05.14 So sanctuary is a type of giant felt 00:16:05.17\00:16:09.18 which of course is in the context of that culture 00:16:09.21\00:16:11.97 that's life is so difficult, goats, blood you know, 00:16:12.00\00:16:15.25 we are use to fluffy animals you know they are-- 00:16:15.28\00:16:19.34 So there is a way God is like kind of trying 00:16:19.37\00:16:21.40 to tell us a message here. Yeah, exactly. 00:16:21.43\00:16:23.74 But I think it's both because throughout the Bible 00:16:23.77\00:16:26.31 we have to remember that it's both 00:16:26.34\00:16:28.79 physical and spiritual. Right. 00:16:28.82\00:16:31.43 Because there is an image we paint it 00:16:31.46\00:16:33.81 but there is an actual physical transfer. 00:16:33.84\00:16:36.09 We can't just look at it and go 00:16:36.12\00:16:37.28 well, nothing really happened it was just a picture 00:16:37.31\00:16:40.39 what was gonna happen. 00:16:40.42\00:16:41.82 Yeah, exactly I mean nothing-- nothing magic has happened 00:16:41.85\00:16:45.17 but what's important spiritually is to understand 00:16:45.20\00:16:48.77 that sin is an issue that doesn't go away 00:16:48.80\00:16:52.42 unless somebody will take the burden of the sin away from you. 00:16:52.45\00:16:58.16 So you cannot deal with sin on your own. 00:16:58.19\00:17:02.32 You need that substitute, you need that Savior, 00:17:02.35\00:17:08.95 you need that high priest who will. 00:17:08.98\00:17:11.23 So that paints the picture really Rachel, 00:17:11.26\00:17:13.21 to the question that you are asking 00:17:13.24\00:17:14.65 if we are wanting to know, okay God, 00:17:14.68\00:17:16.25 what are trying to say to us. Right. 00:17:16.28\00:17:18.49 You know, in everything that we discuss 00:17:18.52\00:17:21.52 and in all of these things Messiah is revealed. 00:17:21.55\00:17:25.45 Jesus is there and just as the children in the Tabernacle 00:17:25.48\00:17:30.93 and the wilderness needed a way 00:17:30.96\00:17:32.38 for that sin to be carried away. 00:17:32.41\00:17:34.43 Well, we are no different. We need that. 00:17:34.46\00:17:37.73 And did it take belief, did it take faith in cooperation 00:17:37.76\00:17:40.01 with this because I'm sure may be 00:17:40.04\00:17:42.16 I mean didn't people have to track to get to this place 00:17:42.19\00:17:46.20 and in that process showing faith that 00:17:46.23\00:17:48.98 they are dedicated to this process of atonement 00:17:49.01\00:17:51.37 because I'm guessing like people can-- 00:17:51.40\00:17:52.48 Well, otherwise they wouldn't show up. Right, exactly so. 00:17:52.51\00:17:55.07 Well, it's interesting you mentioned Leviticus 23 00:17:55.10\00:17:57.99 and it says that this is the most holy day of the year 00:17:58.02\00:18:02.05 where you are actually becoming clean before the Lord. 00:18:02.08\00:18:07.89 You know, think it this way, 00:18:07.92\00:18:09.16 I'm always thinking of a people with addiction, 00:18:09.19\00:18:12.80 you know, and people are you know, hey, I'm clean. Right. 00:18:12.83\00:18:18.48 And sin is addiction. 00:18:18.51\00:18:20.66 Every sin every our bad trait of the character is addiction. 00:18:20.69\00:18:24.20 Well, and it all and all of those things 00:18:24.23\00:18:26.42 I think another good way to understand 00:18:26.45\00:18:28.04 is that the sin is everything that keeps us away from God 00:18:28.07\00:18:30.94 because we have a tendency to say sin is 00:18:30.97\00:18:33.48 oh, I'm lying, I'm cheating, I'm stealing 00:18:33.51\00:18:35.66 but anything that keeps you away from God is sin. 00:18:35.69\00:18:41.16 Because it can be as simplest things, 00:18:41.19\00:18:42.71 we need to move on because time is moving so we need to move. 00:18:42.74\00:18:47.08 I want to jump way ahead, Sasha, 00:18:47.11\00:18:50.21 because Yom Kippur is not only an Old Testament thing. 00:18:50.24\00:18:55.60 Yom Kippur and concepts of Yom Kippur 00:18:55.63\00:18:58.38 appear in the New Testament as well. 00:18:58.41\00:18:59.93 We are gonna jump all the way 00:18:59.96\00:19:01.34 to the end of the New Testament for a moment 00:19:01.37\00:19:03.58 and we want to talk about Kippur 00:19:03.61\00:19:05.15 briefly in the Book of Revelation. 00:19:05.18\00:19:07.38 Specifically chapter 11 and then chapter 15 00:19:07.41\00:19:11.23 and I know that this is we are talking about the physical 00:19:11.26\00:19:14.29 and the spiritual and this is John seeing a vision of-- 00:19:14.32\00:19:18.26 of Kippur in the heavenly sanctuary. 00:19:18.29\00:19:21.02 Exactly, exactly, this is interesting 00:19:21.05\00:19:23.49 how the Levitical, Rachel, sets up to us the stage 00:19:23.52\00:19:29.56 for a grand scheme fulfillment of the plan of salvation. 00:19:29.59\00:19:34.69 And in fact, we do have prophecy 00:19:34.72\00:19:37.92 in the Book of Daniel 8:14 says that, 00:19:37.95\00:19:41.58 there will be a 2,300 days and night 00:19:41.61\00:19:44.01 and a sanctuary shall be cleansed 00:19:44.04\00:19:46.66 the holy place shall be cleansed 00:19:46.69\00:19:48.66 and now in the Book of Revelation 00:19:48.69\00:19:51.80 John witnesses in heaven 00:19:51.83\00:19:55.46 how the process is actually going on. 00:19:55.49\00:19:58.54 Because in Rachel, Levitical calendar 00:19:58.57\00:20:02.71 this cleansing was going on-- on the yearly bases. 00:20:02.74\00:20:07.30 But it pointed out to the grand, grand heavenly Yom Kippur 00:20:07.33\00:20:14.91 where Jesus is actually gonna deal 00:20:14.94\00:20:18.14 with the problem of evil once and for all. 00:20:18.17\00:20:22.87 Right, right, you know its interesting too 00:20:22.90\00:20:27.49 we think so often that these Jewish holidays 00:20:27.52\00:20:31.94 don't really play a large part 00:20:31.97\00:20:33.81 when we get into the New Testament 00:20:33.84\00:20:35.40 and there is a lot of people that even teach 00:20:35.43\00:20:37.03 that they are just not there. Wow. 00:20:37.06\00:20:39.57 And Paul in the Book of 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4 00:20:39.60\00:20:44.73 makes a beautiful reference, that, you know, 00:20:44.76\00:20:48.56 many people are familiar with this passage. 00:20:48.59\00:20:51.06 It says, "For the Lord himself will descend from heaven 00:20:51.09\00:20:53.97 with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, 00:20:54.00\00:20:57.19 and with the sound of the trumpet of God. 00:20:57.22\00:20:59.56 And the dead in Messiah will rise first. 00:20:59.59\00:21:01.85 And we who are alive, who are left, 00:21:01.88\00:21:03.77 will be caught up together with them 00:21:03.80\00:21:05.66 in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, 00:21:05.69\00:21:07.62 and so shall we will always be with the Lord." 00:21:07.65\00:21:09.41 Beautiful passage but what so many people miss 00:21:09.44\00:21:12.36 is that right there in the middle of it 00:21:12.39\00:21:14.28 is a reference to Yom Kippur. Exactly. 00:21:14.31\00:21:16.63 And where was that, sorry? 00:21:16.66\00:21:17.73 This is 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4. 00:21:17.76\00:21:19.76 I mean which reference? 00:21:19.79\00:21:20.82 Well, it's when Paul was talking about 00:21:20.85\00:21:22.77 with the sound of the trumpet of God 00:21:22.80\00:21:25.48 because in Paul's time just as it is today. 00:21:25.51\00:21:29.71 You see the interesting thing that many people means 00:21:29.74\00:21:33.92 oh, trumpet, trumpet you know 00:21:33.95\00:21:35.78 but in reality Paul refers to actually rabbinic tradition. 00:21:35.81\00:21:40.60 Are you speaking of the shofar? 00:21:40.63\00:21:42.05 Yeah, the blowing of the ram's horn. 00:21:42.08\00:21:43.38 Yeah, blowing of the ram's horn shofar 00:21:43.41\00:21:45.69 at the end of Yom Kippur 00:21:45.72\00:21:48.45 with which they herald the coming of the Messiah. 00:21:48.48\00:21:52.96 And the closing of the book of life. 00:21:52.99\00:21:55.38 And what's interesting is that this was 00:21:55.41\00:21:58.75 this is a rabbinic tradition 00:21:58.78\00:22:00.40 there is nothing in the Book of Leviticus 00:22:00.43\00:22:03.00 that was supposed to happen 00:22:03.03\00:22:04.68 because this happens not at the temple 00:22:04.71\00:22:07.23 but at the synagogue. 00:22:07.26\00:22:08.63 But nevertheless this demonstrates 00:22:08.66\00:22:11.23 and we are gonna be talking in this show 00:22:11.26\00:22:14.02 about how much we need to go 00:22:14.05\00:22:16.41 into understand Jewish tradition. 00:22:16.44\00:22:19.18 That's the clear example of application of Jewish tradition 00:22:19.21\00:22:23.77 into a very eschatological-- serious eschatological issue 00:22:23.80\00:22:29.78 like resurrection of the dead in the last days. 00:22:29.81\00:22:32.89 Right and the interesting thing 00:22:32.92\00:22:35.03 the question I think that it brings up for us is then, 00:22:35.06\00:22:40.77 you know, we come to the ideas 00:22:40.80\00:22:43.54 do we have any concept of when Messiah is coming back 00:22:43.57\00:22:46.96 of any kind of timeline 00:22:46.99\00:22:50.00 and I think that Jesus in multiple places 00:22:50.03\00:22:53.04 makes references to seasons, knowing the seasons. 00:22:53.07\00:22:57.04 And I have always wondered whether those references 00:22:57.07\00:22:59.70 were really talking about the timeline 00:22:59.73\00:23:01.74 that runs concurrent with these holidays. 00:23:01.77\00:23:05.00 And you know by the way also this is one of 00:23:05.03\00:23:07.96 what's know as the pilgrimage feast. 00:23:07.99\00:23:10.78 One of those three that people were commanded 00:23:10.81\00:23:14.11 to comeback to be there drawing, 00:23:14.14\00:23:17.42 you know, the Jews from all over the world. 00:23:17.45\00:23:20.03 So like what Day of Atonement do you feel 00:23:20.06\00:23:23.22 is being spoken off right here? 00:23:23.25\00:23:24.89 Well, this is talking about the very end. 00:23:24.92\00:23:27.24 Very end. Yeah, the very end. 00:23:27.27\00:23:29.00 So--so we have to wrap this up 00:23:29.03\00:23:31.47 and I'm gonna take an opportunity 00:23:31.50\00:23:33.08 to bring us a song. 00:23:33.11\00:23:34.55 All right. Psalm 62, right? 00:23:34.58\00:23:36.24 Psalm 62, yeah, the song is called "Only in God." 00:23:36.27\00:23:39.25 Psalm 62 is such a beautiful song 00:23:39.28\00:23:41.64 just about how we can always depend on God 00:23:41.67\00:23:43.90 even when people fail us 00:23:43.93\00:23:45.08 God will never forsake us He is always there. 00:23:45.11\00:23:47.91 Yeah, only in God my soul rests, isn't it? 00:23:47.94\00:23:51.09 Amen. Let's listen to Alex. 00:23:51.12\00:23:53.17 Only in God be at rest my soul 00:24:10.05\00:24:17.34 From you comes my hope, 00:24:17.37\00:24:21.31 my eternal hope 00:24:21.34\00:24:25.66 Only in God be at rest my soul 00:24:25.69\00:24:32.62 From you comes my hope, my eternal hope. 00:24:32.65\00:24:39.82 Oh, my Lord and my salvation 00:24:39.85\00:24:47.44 You are my rock and my salvation 00:24:47.47\00:24:54.10 In you will I trust 00:24:54.13\00:24:57.08 Only in God be at rest my soul 00:25:04.13\00:25:11.30 In you I find strength 00:25:11.33\00:25:15.04 Unshakable strength 00:25:15.07\00:25:19.61 Only in God be at rest my soul 00:25:19.64\00:25:26.38 In you I find strength Unshakable strength 00:25:26.41\00:25:33.58 Oh, my rock and my salvation 00:25:33.61\00:25:41.54 [singing in foreign language] 00:25:41.57\00:25:43.36 In you will I trust 00:25:48.02\00:25:51.73 And only in God be at rest my soul 00:25:57.24\00:26:04.41 I had give you my heart 00:26:04.44\00:26:08.39 I pour out my heart 00:26:08.42\00:26:12.83 Only in God be at rest my soul 00:26:12.86\00:26:19.53 Well, I give you my heart 00:26:19.56\00:26:23.73 I pour out my heart 00:26:23.76\00:26:26.91 You are my rock 00:26:26.94\00:26:30.39 and my salvation 00:26:30.42\00:26:35.47 [singing in foreign language] 00:26:35.50\00:26:38.04 In you will I trust 00:26:41.69\00:26:49.36 In you will I trust 00:26:49.39\00:26:52.45 In you will I trust 00:26:56.67\00:27:00.32 In you will I trust 00:27:04.26\00:27:07.64 In you will I trust 00:27:12.10\00:27:15.97 Amen. Only in God, 00:27:19.76\00:27:23.25 you know that's such a beautiful thing 00:27:23.28\00:27:25.92 that the Psalm has brought out Rachel, 00:27:25.95\00:27:27.94 Sasha, that no matter where we are 00:27:27.97\00:27:31.02 that's really where we turn, we turn to Him. 00:27:31.05\00:27:34.48 And especially in the idea of atonement 00:27:34.51\00:27:38.19 there is only one way its through our Messiah, 00:27:38.22\00:27:41.43 our Savior Jesus. Amen. 00:27:41.46\00:27:43.90 And now may the Lord bless you and may He keep you, 00:27:43.93\00:27:47.28 and may the Lord make His face 00:27:47.31\00:27:48.82 to shine upon you be gracious to you 00:27:48.85\00:27:51.26 and may the Lord lift His countenance upon you 00:27:51.29\00:27:53.94 and bring you His peace. 00:27:53.97\00:27:56.28 God bless you please join us once again 00:27:56.31\00:27:59.59 on Back to Our Roots. Amen. 00:27:59.62\00:28:01.67
