What is sin and what does atonement really mean? 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.53 Come join us today on Back To Our Roots 00:00:04.64\00:00:06.44 as we discuss these topics and many more. 00:00:06.54\00:00:08.75 Hello and welcome once again to Back To Our Roots. 00:00:29.56\00:00:32.28 I'm Alex Schlussler, pastor of the Plantation SDA church, 00:00:32.59\00:00:36.33 and I'm Rachel Hyman, minister of music. 00:00:36.53\00:00:38.56 And we're so happy that you've joined us once again. 00:00:38.76\00:00:41.35 Today on our program we're going to be talking about 00:00:41.55\00:00:44.57 sin and atonement. 00:00:44.77\00:00:46.78 Maybe for some people this might be an uncomfortable subject, 00:00:47.08\00:00:52.38 but hopefully as we move through it 00:00:52.68\00:00:55.38 and you begin to understand what God has really done 00:00:55.58\00:00:58.91 it will lift us up. You know, Rachel, 00:00:59.11\00:01:01.74 the whole idea of sin is... it's a difficult subject 00:01:01.94\00:01:07.91 for a lot of people. Yeah, 'cause we have to realize 00:01:08.11\00:01:10.54 we're not great... in a way. 00:01:10.74\00:01:13.91 Well not only we are not great. You know, scripture says 00:01:14.11\00:01:16.20 that "all have fallen short of the glory of God. " 00:01:16.31\00:01:19.17 All have sinned you know. And I like to say 00:01:19.37\00:01:22.26 "What part of all don't we understand? " 00:01:22.37\00:01:24.38 That means that everyone... Scripture says everyone 00:01:24.58\00:01:27.29 sins in thought and deed. 00:01:27.49\00:01:29.53 So it's something that we all have to face. 00:01:29.73\00:01:31.76 Today we want to look at these ideas of sin and atonement 00:01:31.96\00:01:35.97 from maybe a little bit different perspective 00:01:37.33\00:01:39.29 from how people have heard it in the past. 00:01:39.49\00:01:42.40 Of course, everyone understands sin. 00:01:42.43\00:01:44.68 You know, I have always felt that one of the best ways 00:01:45.18\00:01:48.62 to understand sin is that it is anything that we do 00:01:48.82\00:01:53.98 that separates or keeps us from God. 00:01:54.18\00:01:57.73 You know, so a lot of times people have this perception 00:01:57.93\00:02:01.80 that sin... it's these big things, you know. 00:02:02.00\00:02:05.20 It's murder and lying and stealing and all this. 00:02:05.41\00:02:07.68 But the truth is that sin can be being too close 00:02:07.88\00:02:12.63 to your husband or wife in such a way that you've 00:02:12.83\00:02:16.49 turned away from God and you've placed them up 00:02:16.69\00:02:19.20 on a pedestal and that they have become more important 00:02:19.41\00:02:24.05 to you than God. Umm. 00:02:24.15\00:02:25.62 You know, is music in itself... 00:02:25.82\00:02:30.48 Is music wrong or playing music wrong? 00:02:30.94\00:02:32.86 Well, if it leads you away from God then we have to take 00:02:32.96\00:02:36.91 a serious look at it. Yeah, it's funny when people say 00:02:37.11\00:02:39.16 "Well I'm a good person because you know I never killed anybody 00:02:39.27\00:02:41.69 and you know I only tell little white lies. " 00:02:41.79\00:02:43.90 But when we read the Bible we can so clearly see 00:02:44.10\00:02:46.46 that God lifts up such a higher standard for us. 00:02:46.56\00:02:49.04 Yes. You know, Rachel, when I came to the Lord 00:02:49.14\00:02:52.31 many, many years ago and on the day that I was baptized 00:02:52.51\00:02:55.09 which by the way was Pentecost. That was my baptism day. 00:02:55.20\00:02:58.63 Really? Twenty-six years ago on Pentecost 00:02:58.83\00:03:01.86 I was baptized into the kingdom. 00:03:02.09\00:03:05.10 And one of my best friends who lived just around the corner 00:03:05.30\00:03:09.26 from me... he was a Jewish doctor. 00:03:09.36\00:03:11.54 We used to ride bicycles together - um-hmm - 00:03:11.74\00:03:14.25 almost every day. After work we'd go and we'd ride. 00:03:14.39\00:03:17.07 And I had been talking with him as I was coming to know Jesus 00:03:17.27\00:03:22.47 and I was sharing with him on these bike rides 00:03:22.67\00:03:25.21 about what God was doing and how He was growing closer 00:03:25.41\00:03:28.22 and closer through this progression. 00:03:28.33\00:03:29.72 And then it finally came to the day when I was baptized. 00:03:29.92\00:03:32.75 And of course for me that was an exciting... 00:03:32.96\00:03:35.37 that was a powerful, meaningful day. 00:03:35.47\00:03:37.11 And I remember coming home from the service 00:03:37.31\00:03:40.00 and my friend was in his garage. And I, you know, drove home 00:03:40.03\00:03:45.06 and then I walked back to his house because I was really 00:03:45.26\00:03:47.56 excited. And I called out his name 00:03:47.67\00:03:51.36 and he turned to me and the first thing out of his mouth 00:03:51.56\00:03:53.95 was: "I hate everything you stand for. " 00:03:54.15\00:03:57.00 Wow! I didn't even know what to say. 00:03:57.20\00:04:00.23 Wow! And his comment to me was 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.97 "I am a good man. I am a doctor. 00:04:03.17\00:04:06.15 I love my family. I'm involved in the community. 00:04:06.35\00:04:10.58 You're not going to tell me because I don't believe what 00:04:10.78\00:04:14.05 you believe that I'm not a good person 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.20 or that God would reject me. " How'd you respond? 00:04:16.30\00:04:18.65 You know, the truth was Rachel I didn't even know what to say. 00:04:18.86\00:04:21.14 Hmmm. I was brand new as a believer. Sure. 00:04:21.34\00:04:25.21 I think I must have turned white - yeah - because 00:04:25.35\00:04:28.63 I was so shocked... And he was a friend of yours. 00:04:28.74\00:04:30.35 Right... that he would respond that way. 00:04:30.55\00:04:31.92 But you know, that's one of the things 00:04:32.06\00:04:34.32 that Jesus even talked about. 00:04:34.52\00:04:37.52 That there would be times when friends and family 00:04:37.72\00:04:40.41 and those people that we were the closest with would reject... 00:04:40.61\00:04:43.74 And what I've realized as time went on 00:04:43.94\00:04:46.30 that, Rachel, it wasn't that he rejected me. 00:04:46.51\00:04:48.97 It was that he rejected God. 00:04:49.17\00:04:50.84 Yeah. He rejected Jesus. 00:04:51.04\00:04:52.41 And it's also sad that a lot of Jews many times view Christians 00:04:52.44\00:04:55.88 as people who are pushing their religion on them 00:04:56.08\00:04:59.05 and others. And yes, some Christians can be pushy. 00:04:59.16\00:05:01.58 But a lot of the time I mean... For example, you made that 00:05:01.78\00:05:04.74 decision for you. You hadn't even told him anything. 00:05:04.84\00:05:06.74 You hadn't even so to speak witnessed or proselytized 00:05:06.94\00:05:09.41 to him. Exactly. He just felt threatened by you. 00:05:09.51\00:05:11.17 And the reality is there's a lot of Jews who have become 00:05:11.37\00:05:14.21 Christians and also just Christians in general 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.20 who aren't pushy. Exactly; exactly. And you know 00:05:16.40\00:05:19.77 for me if I look back on the things that as a Jew that 00:05:20.73\00:05:26.04 brought me to Jesus - um-hmm - it wasn't the prospect 00:05:26.24\00:05:30.80 that I was a sinner. To be honest with you 00:05:31.00\00:05:32.94 it wasn't that I was afraid that I would be separated 00:05:33.14\00:05:36.40 or I would you know... go to hell... go to hell or whatever. 00:05:36.61\00:05:39.40 It wasn't that all. It was actually 00:05:39.60\00:05:41.49 the testimony of my step- father - hmmm. 00:05:41.69\00:05:45.17 And him being a Christian man. You know, marrying my mom 00:05:45.37\00:05:49.13 after my dad died. Obviously after my dad died. 00:05:49.23\00:05:52.06 But marrying my mom and then seeing the type of man 00:05:52.26\00:05:57.80 that he was. Hmmm. How much he loved my mom. 00:05:57.90\00:06:00.62 Wow! And he exhibited what true Christ-like character was 00:06:00.82\00:06:04.63 before me. And it really began to convict me 00:06:04.83\00:06:07.61 that "Wait a minute... maybe there is... " Something to this. 00:06:07.81\00:06:10.72 "something to this and something different. " 00:06:10.85\00:06:12.22 Right. So we want to start and really get into the meat 00:06:12.30\00:06:16.24 of the program now. And I'm going to ask our brother 00:06:16.34\00:06:19.94 Alexander Bolotnikov, Sasha as we call him, 00:06:20.14\00:06:23.20 to come out and join us. Come on, Sasha. 00:06:23.40\00:06:25.54 Come out. Hey, Sash... Sasha, he's a... 00:06:25.74\00:06:29.40 Good to see you again. Yeah, good to see you, Sasha. 00:06:29.50\00:06:31.38 How are you? How are you? 00:06:31.48\00:06:32.97 I'm very good. Sasha is... we call him our 00:06:33.00\00:06:35.81 resident theologian. But all kidding aside 00:06:35.91\00:06:38.24 Sasha is a... he's completing his Ph. D. 00:06:38.44\00:06:42.94 In fact he just told me he finished all his writing. 00:06:43.04\00:06:46.24 His dissertation's been sent in. 00:06:46.44\00:06:48.05 That must be a weight off to finally have that sent in. 00:06:48.25\00:06:50.79 Oh yeah... seven years. 00:06:50.89\00:06:53.03 Wow. And by the way, Sasha is also an Adventist pastor. 00:06:53.24\00:06:58.59 You're a pastor in the Delaware Conference? 00:06:58.79\00:07:00.43 Ohio Conference. Ohio Conference. 00:07:00.63\00:07:03.17 Delaware Seventh-day Adventist church. Ah, OK. 00:07:03.37\00:07:05.11 I knew Delaware got in there somewhere. 00:07:05.24\00:07:07.16 But... Delaware, Ohio. Delaware, Ohio. 00:07:08.08\00:07:10.36 I didn't even know there was such a place. But then 00:07:10.56\00:07:12.28 Ohio also has a Miami too, doesn't it? Oh yeah. 00:07:14.00\00:07:16.55 Miami River. 00:07:16.65\00:07:19.07 So Sasha, today we're tackling a difficult topic. 00:07:19.27\00:07:23.91 We're talking about sin and atonement. 00:07:24.99\00:07:27.50 And we really want to get into first just kind of an overview. 00:07:27.71\00:07:32.50 Are there two different perspectives as far as 00:07:32.71\00:07:37.69 a Hebraic view of sin vs. a Christian view 00:07:37.89\00:07:43.38 of sin? Uh... Before we get into atonement 00:07:43.58\00:07:46.69 because obviously atonement is the answer to sin. 00:07:46.89\00:07:49.03 But let's talk about sin first. Do you think that there's really 00:07:49.23\00:07:52.91 a difference in how that's looked at? 00:07:53.01\00:07:55.37 Really, from the perspective of the Torah 00:07:55.67\00:07:59.35 and from the perspective of the New Testament 00:07:59.55\00:08:01.95 it is absolutely the same. 00:08:02.15\00:08:03.52 Because John in his first epistle says clearly 00:08:03.66\00:08:07.41 "Sin is lawlessness. " 00:08:07.61\00:08:09.91 God's law is His will for us. 00:08:10.31\00:08:13.99 So life contrary to God's will for us 00:08:14.19\00:08:19.70 is sin. And in the Torah it speaks about 00:08:19.88\00:08:24.17 the sentences if someone transgresses against God's 00:08:24.37\00:08:28.46 commandments. So it is essentially the same. 00:08:28.66\00:08:31.23 Torah and the New Testament... it is essentially the same. 00:08:31.43\00:08:34.85 But from a purely scriptural viewpoint, I understand what 00:08:35.05\00:08:39.41 you're saying. But you know, just thinking back over my past 00:08:39.51\00:08:43.87 even prior to coming to the Messiah 00:08:44.18\00:08:48.14 I don't know that I was taught or that I understood 00:08:48.34\00:08:52.43 sin the way that I understand it now. 00:08:52.64\00:08:55.10 It is interesting that in Judaism the term sin 00:08:55.30\00:08:59.25 is blurred off. In fact, in rabbinic view 00:08:59.55\00:09:05.51 it is more of obligation. 00:09:05.72\00:09:08.53 You either passed and fulfilled your obligation 00:09:08.73\00:09:11.93 or you still owe and you have to fulfill. 00:09:12.13\00:09:15.49 Obligation of what? Yeah? Obligation to do something. 00:09:15.59\00:09:18.50 That's basically... Is that in the context of... 00:09:18.70\00:09:21.27 of doing what God has commanded to do? Yeah, yeah, in a way. 00:09:21.47\00:09:24.42 And also it is viewed as... The other view of sin is 00:09:24.63\00:09:29.44 if you have done something like adultery or something 00:09:29.47\00:09:33.16 this is considered to be a crime and under the Torah law 00:09:33.36\00:09:38.39 it was punishable by death. 00:09:38.69\00:09:40.16 So... But since there was no enforcement in modern Judaism 00:09:40.36\00:09:45.06 this kind of fell aside. 00:09:45.26\00:09:47.94 So there is no emphasis on sin 00:09:48.14\00:09:53.54 in Judaism unfortunately. I can say that I've never 00:09:53.74\00:09:56.39 heard any rabbinic teachings that sin is dealt with 00:09:56.59\00:10:01.31 in the way that we understand it. 00:10:01.41\00:10:03.54 Well, there is one exception. OK. 00:10:03.74\00:10:06.22 An exception comes when the High Holidays... 00:10:06.36\00:10:09.84 at the High Holy Days. 00:10:10.04\00:10:11.65 Because that's when people come to the synagogue - 00:10:11.85\00:10:16.11 as we mentioned in one of our other programs - 00:10:16.31\00:10:18.35 for the prayer of forgiveness. 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.33 And they literally... Yom Kippur? Yeah, yeah. 00:10:21.53\00:10:23.78 Between Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah... those ten days... 00:10:23.88\00:10:27.02 this is the way they come and pray for forgiveness 00:10:27.22\00:10:30.67 of their sins. OK, so we're kind of shifting gears here now 00:10:30.87\00:10:34.71 a little bit and we can go with this. 00:10:34.91\00:10:36.63 Now what we're really talking about... this concept, this idea 00:10:36.83\00:10:41.65 of atonement - oh yeah - because that's where this... 00:10:41.85\00:10:44.57 this comes in. The Yom Kippur even in orthodox Jewish 00:10:44.77\00:10:48.95 tradition points us to the Hebraic direction to the 00:10:49.15\00:10:52.54 ancient tradition of understand- ing how the atonement 00:10:52.65\00:10:57.73 for sin was perceived. 00:10:57.93\00:11:00.15 Yeah. I mean like, so how do they? What's Yom Kippur for 00:11:00.35\00:11:04.79 then if they're typically not recognizing them being 00:11:04.99\00:11:08.60 sinful but then all of a sudden on this day they realize 00:11:08.70\00:11:10.88 they are or something? In a way, yes. In a way, yes. 00:11:10.98\00:11:14.07 That's paradox; that's paradox. 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.39 That's the time people talk about the sin: Yom Kippur. 00:11:16.52\00:11:19.23 Can I back up just a little bit? 00:11:19.43\00:11:21.10 I know that we're moving in the direction of atonement 00:11:21.30\00:11:23.27 but I wanted to touch on one other thing 00:11:23.37\00:11:25.12 when we're talking about sin 00:11:25.32\00:11:26.69 and this is something that I've had some discussions with 00:11:26.75\00:11:29.40 some non-believing... Jews that haven't accepted 00:11:29.60\00:11:34.80 Yeshua or Jesus as Messiah. 00:11:35.00\00:11:37.22 And as a Christian we look back to 00:11:37.42\00:11:42.75 the garden of Eden, we look to Adam and Eve 00:11:42.95\00:11:46.41 and we see that in that scenario 00:11:46.51\00:11:50.39 you know God is walking with Adam in the garden. 00:11:50.49\00:11:53.54 There's fellowship... there's this intimate connection. 00:11:53.74\00:11:56.10 And the Bible describes this breaking of fellowship 00:11:56.30\00:12:01.16 as breaking of connection through the sin: 00:12:01.26\00:12:05.62 through them eating of the apple that God had told them not to. 00:12:05.82\00:12:08.67 And then we understand it that now what this has done 00:12:08.87\00:12:12.21 is this has severed fellowship. 00:12:12.41\00:12:14.15 And we look to it that this is something that 00:12:14.35\00:12:17.78 becomes almost a genetic condition now of the human race 00:12:17.98\00:12:22.64 that we are born spiritually dead... 00:12:22.84\00:12:26.49 almost a way to think of it. 00:12:26.69\00:12:28.47 Also known as iniquity. Right. 00:12:28.67\00:12:30.89 We're not connected with God at birth. 00:12:31.09\00:12:33.47 Yeah, and it is a genetic condition because 00:12:33.67\00:12:35.42 we were created immortal 00:12:35.62\00:12:39.93 and after the disobedience we have become sick and mortal. 00:12:40.13\00:12:45.97 So when people... And it's very common in the world 00:12:46.17\00:12:50.33 where people talk about: "Well sin, misbehavior, 00:12:50.53\00:12:54.46 all of these things. These are cultural things. 00:12:54.66\00:12:57.00 These are learned behaviors. 00:12:57.10\00:12:59.00 That you are born as a clean slate 00:12:59.20\00:13:02.37 and you start off with everything good. " 00:13:02.57\00:13:04.38 And what I've always questioned when it comes to that 00:13:04.58\00:13:07.05 is then have you ever seen for those of us that are parents 00:13:07.35\00:13:11.44 there's always this point when our little son or daughter 00:13:11.64\00:13:15.01 finds their way to the cookie jar so to speak, 00:13:15.21\00:13:17.61 pulls it down off the shelf and it breaks. And you ask them 00:13:17.74\00:13:21.15 "Who broke the cookie jar? " 00:13:21.35\00:13:23.52 and what comes out of their mouth? "I don't... " "Not me! " 00:13:23.72\00:13:25.65 "Not me; I don't know. " 00:13:25.75\00:13:27.13 And my question has always been: "OK, so who taught them 00:13:27.53\00:13:30.65 how to lie? " Because I know as a parent 00:13:30.75\00:13:33.30 you don't sit down with them and say: "OK, this is how 00:13:33.50\00:13:35.30 you get away with stuff: " Right? Right. 00:13:35.40\00:13:37.44 "you learn how to make excuses. " 00:13:37.57\00:13:39.56 No, we don't teach them that but somehow it's just there. 00:13:39.76\00:13:43.19 And I think that that's very representative of this 00:13:43.39\00:13:45.91 fallen condition that we're born into. 00:13:46.01\00:13:48.41 So sin exists. Sin abounds. 00:13:48.61\00:13:51.21 ALL sin and fall short. 00:13:51.42\00:13:53.29 And this condition... these commandments that God gives... 00:13:53.40\00:13:56.19 it is written in the book of Leviticus that they're given 00:13:56.39\00:13:59.86 for us so that we could live. So basically without them 00:13:59.89\00:14:04.58 we eventually die. So people don't realize 00:14:04.78\00:14:07.85 when they talk: "Oh, I am a good man. " 00:14:08.05\00:14:09.64 So do the Jews feel that we were born in iniquity? 00:14:09.84\00:14:13.54 Do they also believe that we're born with a sinful nature? 00:14:13.74\00:14:17.60 This connection is missed because... 00:14:17.80\00:14:20.43 This connection is missed and that's the problem why people 00:14:20.74\00:14:24.58 don't understand however good you can be 00:14:24.78\00:14:27.96 you're dead eventually 00:14:28.16\00:14:31.25 and because of sin. Right. 00:14:31.45\00:14:34.38 So OK, so let's not talk about sin now. Let's move 00:14:34.58\00:14:38.91 and let's talk about what was God's plan 00:14:39.11\00:14:42.00 to fix this condition that we find ourselves in? 00:14:42.20\00:14:45.60 And this really centers all around atonement. 00:14:45.80\00:14:48.99 We have atonement through the sacrifice. 00:14:49.19\00:14:51.01 We also have atonement through the priesthood. 00:14:51.21\00:14:53.64 Sasha, talk to us about that. 00:14:53.84\00:14:55.21 Well this is the way how it fixes and it illustrates 00:14:55.41\00:14:59.25 through the substitutionary death. 00:14:59.45\00:15:01.89 If you want to gain your immortality, 00:15:02.09\00:15:06.03 someone has to die in your place. 00:15:06.23\00:15:09.99 That's how God demonstrated it during Passover, you know. 00:15:10.19\00:15:14.12 Well and that goes back right to Leviticus where God said: 00:15:14.32\00:15:16.79 "Without the shedding of blood there can be no remission 00:15:16.93\00:15:19.04 of the sin. " Exactly. That's the death you're talking about. 00:15:19.14\00:15:21.74 We're talking about the issue of eternal life. 00:15:21.94\00:15:25.01 We're talking from the position that at some point 00:15:25.21\00:15:28.54 we were not created to be dead. 00:15:28.74\00:15:32.12 And so the only way for us to survive 00:15:32.32\00:15:38.07 is someone dies in our place. 00:15:38.27\00:15:40.95 And that's the idea. That's how atonement is introduced. 00:15:41.15\00:15:44.54 A sinner always would lay his hand 00:15:44.94\00:15:50.43 upon the head of the sacrificial animal. 00:15:50.63\00:15:56.44 And it says there in the text 00:15:56.64\00:15:59.81 that it will be pleasing to God to make atonement. 00:16:00.01\00:16:05.03 So that... Now... I'm sorry. At that point when someone 00:16:05.33\00:16:09.73 would lay their hands are they confessing their sin 00:16:09.83\00:16:13.31 upon that animal? Is that what's happening? 00:16:13.51\00:16:15.77 Yes. Eventually yes. 00:16:15.87\00:16:17.85 We have this in the other place Leviticus 16 00:16:18.05\00:16:21.93 where the laying of the hands is a confession. 00:16:22.13\00:16:24.77 But actually the gesture itself of laying of the hands 00:16:24.98\00:16:28.98 is an important gesture in that culture. 00:16:29.18\00:16:31.45 We see how Moses 00:16:31.65\00:16:35.66 laid his hand upon Joshua 00:16:35.76\00:16:38.30 and gave him of his glory. 00:16:38.50\00:16:41.47 So the idea of transfer... So the sinner when he places 00:16:41.67\00:16:45.76 his hand upon the animal he gives this animal that sin 00:16:45.96\00:16:50.44 which he has and eventually the animal has to die... 00:16:50.48\00:16:54.93 paying the penalty for the sin. 00:16:55.13\00:16:57.22 So back then sin was more recognized in Jewish culture? 00:16:57.52\00:16:59.62 Oh yeah, in the Bible... In the Bible in Israel it was 00:16:59.72\00:17:05.33 very clear way how do you get rid of it. 00:17:05.54\00:17:08.07 Someone has to take responsibility. 00:17:08.27\00:17:11.01 And that's why it's... But what happened? 00:17:11.21\00:17:13.02 What happens now... in the Jewish culture today 00:17:13.22\00:17:15.18 they'll say: "Yeah, we don't do that any more. " 00:17:15.38\00:17:17.86 How would they describe today how they're getting atonement 00:17:18.06\00:17:20.18 for their sins? Well... through prayer. 00:17:20.28\00:17:23.31 Through prayer and charity. Yeah, through prayer and charity 00:17:23.51\00:17:26.83 because, you know, we're jumping way ahead but 00:17:26.93\00:17:30.45 you know after the destruction of the temple in 70 AD 00:17:30.66\00:17:33.49 the rabbis had to: "OK, now we no longer have the sacrificial 00:17:33.69\00:17:37.19 system. " God had clearly said the only place they could offer 00:17:37.29\00:17:39.97 sacrifice was the temple there. 00:17:40.07\00:17:42.23 Once it's gone they have to begin to come up with an answer 00:17:42.43\00:17:45.17 to that. But let's go back 'cause I want you to spend 00:17:45.27\00:17:48.75 a little more time with atonement because we're talking 00:17:48.85\00:17:51.58 about the laying on of hands of... to transfer in essence 00:17:51.68\00:17:56.92 the sin that this person had incurred. 00:17:57.12\00:18:00.66 The penalty of death that was upon them - 00:18:00.86\00:18:03.29 yes - for transgressing the law of God - exactly - 00:18:03.50\00:18:06.50 is passed then onto the animal. 00:18:06.60\00:18:08.48 The idea of atonement is someone else takes the responsibility 00:18:08.58\00:18:13.14 for you. OK, so now we're going to move 00:18:13.24\00:18:16.29 and now we have the priesthood 00:18:16.49\00:18:17.93 and there is an additional transference that's going to 00:18:18.03\00:18:20.47 happen. Yes, in fact the sacrificial system is 00:18:20.57\00:18:24.37 more complicated than just one sacrifice. 00:18:24.67\00:18:27.58 We have burnt offerings. Usually it's offerings that are 00:18:27.78\00:18:32.63 offered twice a day morning and evening. 00:18:32.83\00:18:36.39 But then we have sin offerings. Um-hmm. 00:18:36.59\00:18:38.90 And sin offerings are not regular. 00:18:39.00\00:18:40.96 It's when a person - the sons of Israel - commit some sin. 00:18:41.16\00:18:45.43 Something as the book of Leviticus says that he did not 00:18:45.63\00:18:51.63 know and then became known. 00:18:51.73\00:18:54.10 So we're talking specifically now about unintentional sin. 00:18:54.30\00:18:57.81 Because as far as I know - correct me if I'm wrong - 00:18:58.01\00:19:00.86 there is no... built into the sacrificial system... 00:19:01.06\00:19:04.88 there is no atonement for intentional sin because 00:19:05.08\00:19:07.41 if you sinned intentional they just take you out and stone you. 00:19:07.51\00:19:10.20 Yeah. Or before they take you out and stone you 00:19:10.40\00:19:13.29 if you repent you have to run to the sanctuary, 00:19:13.49\00:19:15.64 hold the horns, and make the new covenant with God. 00:19:15.85\00:19:18.95 OK, so let's go back to now... We're talking about the priest 00:19:19.15\00:19:21.95 and the different... Now wasn't there within that there's a 00:19:22.15\00:19:24.47 specific where the priest actually ate some of the... 00:19:24.58\00:19:28.89 exactly... the offering? Because unlike the burnt offering 00:19:28.99\00:19:33.28 where just laying of the hand is enough 00:19:33.48\00:19:36.35 you lay the hand but atonement doesn't count. 00:19:36.65\00:19:39.81 The priest is the one who makes the atonement. 00:19:40.01\00:19:42.87 And then Leviticus chapter 6 explains that the priest 00:19:43.07\00:19:46.75 makes the atonement by eating the meat 00:19:46.95\00:19:51.46 of this sacrificial goat. 00:19:51.66\00:19:54.47 Wow! Female goat... not very delicious. 00:19:54.67\00:19:57.54 So is he... Would it be correct then to say that in essence 00:19:57.64\00:20:00.32 he becomes like a sin bearer for that person? 00:20:00.42\00:20:02.47 Exactly. This is the key part of Leviticus 10 00:20:02.67\00:20:08.39 verse 17. That's where it explains to us 00:20:08.60\00:20:12.51 Moses... It's after the death of Nadab and Abihu 00:20:12.65\00:20:18.03 the two sons of Aaron who gave... 00:20:18.13\00:20:19.95 who offered incorrectly and were consumed. Yes. 00:20:20.05\00:20:22.38 And so all the rest of the priests they're afraid. 00:20:22.58\00:20:25.69 And so Moses comes in and he sees that they're... 00:20:25.89\00:20:29.06 that the goat of the sin offering, nothing is happening. 00:20:29.16\00:20:32.24 He said: "Why haven't you eaten your sin offerings 00:20:32.44\00:20:37.72 on the Holy Place? " 00:20:37.83\00:20:39.42 And it said: "This is the Most Holy 00:20:39.62\00:20:41.88 and it is made for you... it's given to you 00:20:42.08\00:20:45.51 to bear away the sins of Israel. " 00:20:45.71\00:20:49.84 And then in another statement which is the same way: 00:20:50.04\00:20:52.99 "To make atonement for them. " 00:20:53.19\00:20:55.31 So atonement is literally someone carries away your sin 00:20:55.41\00:21:01.00 from you. Unburdens you. And that's the great concept 00:21:01.20\00:21:05.84 what we need. We have a great need to unload. 00:21:06.04\00:21:10.73 To unburden ourselves. And atonement is the process 00:21:10.83\00:21:14.10 how we unload. Right. 00:21:14.30\00:21:15.78 And of course we then understand that 00:21:15.81\00:21:19.19 at God's perfect time the atonement system is then - 00:21:20.24\00:21:24.33 the sacrificial system - is then done away. 00:21:24.53\00:21:26.59 And actually, prior to that... 00:21:28.14\00:21:30.49 You know, I don't know how many people realize 00:21:30.69\00:21:32.57 that Jesus comes and He performs His mission... 00:21:32.77\00:21:35.87 He dies on the cross but the sacrificial system 00:21:36.07\00:21:39.87 is still going for another 40... almost 40 years 00:21:40.07\00:21:43.22 until the temple is finally destroyed. 00:21:43.42\00:21:45.49 But let's talk... Our time is getting away from us 00:21:45.79\00:21:49.57 so quick as it always does. 00:21:49.67\00:21:51.04 Sasha, briefly can you talk about the idea of how 00:21:51.12\00:21:55.09 atonement... What happened with the cross? 00:21:55.29\00:21:56.82 I mean, we've only got maybe a minute and a half 00:21:56.92\00:21:59.18 so we're running out of time. 00:21:59.28\00:22:01.35 Well the fact is that the cross symbolizes the altar. 00:22:01.45\00:22:04.92 And only burnt offering is made on the altar. 00:22:05.02\00:22:08.86 But then the rest of the sanctuary takes over 00:22:09.07\00:22:12.41 especially with the sin offering 00:22:12.61\00:22:14.42 where it's carried into the sanctuary. 00:22:14.62\00:22:17.24 And that's exactly what Jesus is doing. 00:22:17.44\00:22:19.83 Beyond Calvary He goes into the heavenly sanctuary. 00:22:20.03\00:22:24.38 He changes His function from the Lamb to a Priest 00:22:24.58\00:22:29.52 and He is still ministering for us. And literally 00:22:29.65\00:22:32.89 becoming our sin bearer. Exactly! He now unburdens us 00:22:33.09\00:22:38.30 in heavenly... Our sins are taken... He takes it away 00:22:38.40\00:22:43.51 and carries it into the heavenly sanctuary 00:22:43.71\00:22:46.28 lifting our burden. 00:22:46.58\00:22:48.88 So um... 00:22:49.08\00:22:50.88 Boy... Can you really briefly can you answer this? 00:22:53.07\00:22:58.26 Or maybe I'm asking too much. Then is atonement 00:22:58.36\00:23:00.70 completed at the cross? 00:23:00.80\00:23:02.17 Absolutely not, no. Atonement begins on Calvary - 00:23:02.31\00:23:07.07 OK - but it is completed only in the sanctuary. 00:23:07.27\00:23:11.30 When the sins are carried in. When the sins are carried in. 00:23:11.40\00:23:13.69 And that's how atonement... Sanctuary is like a surgery room 00:23:13.90\00:23:19.61 where it takes all the evil things from us 00:23:19.81\00:23:24.45 and operates on us. 00:23:24.65\00:23:26.59 Wow! That's really beautiful. 00:23:26.89\00:23:28.84 So Alex, I believe you have another song for us. 00:23:29.05\00:23:31.06 I do. Adon Hakavod. A beautiful, beautiful song. 00:23:31.26\00:23:35.86 I'm going to go get ready. Sasha, can you tell us... 00:23:36.26\00:23:38.68 tell them just a little bit about the song? Yeah. 00:23:38.79\00:23:40.58 Adon Hakavod: Adon means God 00:23:40.78\00:23:44.74 Kavod means glory. 00:23:44.84\00:23:46.56 And that's a great expression 00:23:46.76\00:23:50.43 how we really contemplate about our glorious God 00:23:50.63\00:23:55.98 Creator who abides in His heavenly temple. 00:23:56.18\00:24:01.57 All right. Thank you. 00:24:01.77\00:24:03.34 And Thou art the Lord 00:26:12.16\00:26:16.83 of glory. 00:26:17.13\00:26:21.74 And Thou art the King 00:26:21.85\00:26:26.10 of kings. 00:26:26.40\00:26:31.75 And Thou art the Son 00:26:32.05\00:26:36.16 of Righteousness 00:26:36.46\00:26:41.42 with healing in 00:26:41.72\00:26:45.93 Your wings. 00:26:46.23\00:26:51.15 And Thou art the Son 00:26:51.55\00:26:56.57 of Righteousness 00:26:56.97\00:27:02.92 with healing in 00:27:03.32\00:27:09.25 Your wings. 00:27:09.55\00:27:14.11 Beautiful. I'm so thankful that there truly is healing 00:27:16.21\00:27:19.33 in God's wings for us. Amen; amen. 00:27:19.43\00:27:21.57 Friends, it's such an important thing 00:27:21.87\00:27:24.98 for us to see and appreciate that through our Messiah, 00:27:25.18\00:27:29.74 through Jesus, through Yeshua, 00:27:29.94\00:27:32.17 He truly is our atonement. He is our sacrifice. 00:27:32.38\00:27:36.56 He is our sin bearer. That's right. He is our High Priest. 00:27:36.77\00:27:39.67 And now may the Lord bless you and may He keep you. 00:27:39.97\00:27:42.96 May the Lord make His face to shine upon you 00:27:43.26\00:27:45.39 and be gracious to you. 00:27:45.49\00:27:46.86 May the Lord lift His countenance upon you 00:27:46.89\00:27:48.60 and bring you His peace. 00:27:48.80\00:27:50.73 On behalf of myself, Rachel, and Sasha 00:27:50.93\00:27:54.16 we want to say thank you for joining us. 00:27:54.36\00:27:55.79 Please come back again... Back To Our Roots. 00:27:55.99\00:27:59.73 Join us. 00:27:59.83\00:28:01.22
