Shalom and welcome. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 Today on Back To Our Roots we are going to experience 00:00:02.80\00:00:06.46 a traditional Sabbath opening. I'm glad you're with us. 00:00:06.66\00:00:09.67 Hello and welcome to Back To Our Roots. 00:00:32.10\00:00:34.55 I'm Pastor Alex Schlussler 00:00:34.75\00:00:36.30 and I'm Rachel Hyman, minister of music. 00:00:36.50\00:00:38.36 This is Havez and this is Lori. 00:00:38.46\00:00:40.70 We want to welcome you today to our program. 00:00:40.90\00:00:42.88 Today is a very special program indeed. 00:00:43.08\00:00:45.54 We are going to be looking at a traditional celebration 00:00:45.74\00:00:49.25 of bringing in the Shabbat. 00:00:49.45\00:00:51.05 Rachel, this is going to be so exciting. 00:00:51.45\00:00:53.94 I know we've had so many people really interested in this 00:00:54.14\00:00:56.74 so we're going just get right into it. 00:00:56.84\00:00:59.43 And a little bit later we'll be explaining exactly 00:00:59.63\00:01:02.23 what's happening. So just sit back and enjoy 00:01:02.43\00:01:05.20 as from a traditional perspec tive we welcome in the Shabbat. 00:01:05.40\00:01:08.97 Blessed are You, O Lord our God, 00:01:54.16\00:01:56.42 King of the universe, who has sanctified us by His commandment 00:01:56.63\00:02:00.27 and the blood of Yeshua the Messiah 00:02:00.47\00:02:03.27 and has commanded us to be a light to the nations 00:02:03.47\00:02:06.97 and has given us Yeshua, our Messiah, the light of the world. 00:02:07.17\00:02:11.09 And then we take the cup which is filled with the fruit 00:02:11.29\00:02:14.98 of the vine and we say the blessing. 00:02:15.08\00:02:17.46 Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, 00:02:23.64\00:02:26.52 who created the fruit of the vine. 00:02:26.72\00:02:29.07 And in front of us we have two challahs. 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.96 And we have two challahs because we remember 00:02:51.17\00:02:55.35 how when the children of Israel wandered through the desert 00:02:55.55\00:02:58.85 He gave them manna to eat. 00:02:59.05\00:03:01.25 But He also gave them a very special commandment: 00:03:01.46\00:03:04.06 that on the Sabbath day they weren't to work. 00:03:04.26\00:03:07.27 So God poured out a double portion of His heavenly bread 00:03:07.47\00:03:10.42 the manna - an extra amount - so that the day before Shabbat 00:03:10.52\00:03:13.69 they could collect all that bread - the manna - 00:03:13.89\00:03:16.17 and they wouldn't have to worry about being fed. 00:03:16.37\00:03:18.70 So we remember this double blessing 00:03:18.90\00:03:21.63 that our God pours out on all of those who are faithful 00:03:21.83\00:03:25.35 to honor His Shabbat. 00:03:25.56\00:03:27.18 We say the blessing of the bread. 00:03:27.38\00:03:28.96 Blessed are you, O Lord our God, who brings forth 00:03:36.85\00:03:39.38 bread from the earth. And we break the bread 00:03:39.58\00:03:43.93 and because we know that our Messiah - Yeshua - is the bread 00:03:44.13\00:03:48.66 of life we remember Him. 00:03:48.76\00:03:50.66 And Yeshua... He was born in a very special place 00:03:50.86\00:03:54.15 the Bible tells us. 00:03:54.35\00:03:55.72 It says that He was born in a place called Bethlehem 00:03:55.75\00:03:58.87 or Bet Lahm... which literally means the house of bread. 00:03:59.07\00:04:02.72 So how wonderful is it that our Messiah, the Bread of Life, 00:04:02.92\00:04:06.60 was born in the house of bread. 00:04:06.80\00:04:09.16 Is that good? OK. 00:04:19.85\00:04:22.16 Come around and let me bless you children. 00:04:22.37\00:04:24.19 So on that evening of Shabbat 00:04:27.81\00:04:31.25 as we're beginning... it's called Erev Shabbat... 00:04:31.45\00:04:33.64 we gather our children together because one of the most 00:04:33.84\00:04:36.55 important things that we do on the Shabbat 00:04:36.75\00:04:39.49 is as a family we spend time together 00:04:39.69\00:04:41.82 and we bless each other. 00:04:42.02\00:04:43.56 So we take this time as the dad of the house 00:04:43.66\00:04:46.35 brings his children around and he first says a blessing 00:04:46.55\00:04:49.95 over his children. And then traditionally he would read 00:04:50.05\00:04:53.39 from the book of Proverbs chapter 31 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.64 which is the virtuous woman. He would read that over his wife 00:04:55.84\00:04:58.92 as well. And so we're going to just say the blessing 00:04:59.02\00:05:01.58 over the kids. And we say from the book of Numbers 00:05:01.61\00:05:04.12 May the Lord bless you and may He keep you. 00:05:04.32\00:05:07.03 And may the Lord make His face to shine upon you 00:05:07.23\00:05:09.80 and be gracious to you. 00:05:09.90\00:05:11.27 And may the Lord lift His countenance upon you 00:05:11.30\00:05:13.18 and bring you His peace. And then I say it in Hebrew. 00:05:13.38\00:05:16.68 I say Shalom which means peace and blessings upon you. 00:05:43.83\00:05:47.04 Thank you so much, children. 00:05:47.24\00:05:48.61 You can go and we'll see you back in just a little while. 00:05:48.64\00:05:50.86 All right. So we want to 00:05:54.66\00:05:58.08 now get into it and talk with you just a little bit about 00:05:58.29\00:06:02.03 what you saw. What the sig- nificance of these things are. 00:06:02.14\00:06:04.99 And so we're going to invite our brother Alexander Bolotnikov. 00:06:05.19\00:06:09.11 We call him Sasha. He's our resident theologian 00:06:09.31\00:06:12.61 and just keeps us on track. Sasha why don't you come on out? 00:06:12.81\00:06:15.49 Well, Shabbat Shalom. Shabbat Shalom. 00:06:16.99\00:06:20.42 It's good to see you, Sasha. 00:06:20.56\00:06:21.93 You know Sasha, I've known you for so many years. 00:06:22.13\00:06:24.13 And Sasha is... I kid he's our theologian... but truly 00:06:24.33\00:06:28.74 Sasha is completing his Ph. D. and he's just one of the most 00:06:28.94\00:06:34.55 knowledgeable people in these areas that I know. 00:06:34.66\00:06:36.91 So it's just a great blessing to have you with us 00:06:37.01\00:06:39.34 as we celebrate the Shabbat. 00:06:39.54\00:06:42.81 Good to be with you again on this Shabbat evening. 00:06:43.01\00:06:45.39 Yes, thank you so much. 00:06:45.52\00:06:46.89 So we did some interesting things here that are traditional 00:06:47.03\00:06:51.42 within the Jewish faith... the Jewish religion. 00:06:51.62\00:06:53.79 And let's start first of all 00:06:53.99\00:06:55.79 with the lighting of the candles. 00:06:55.99\00:06:57.74 As I said in the beginning 00:06:58.24\00:06:59.98 the tradition is is that because the woman is the one 00:07:00.18\00:07:04.29 who Messiah would come through 00:07:04.49\00:07:06.63 she is the one that brings the light of the Sabbath in. 00:07:06.83\00:07:11.42 And I know that there's a lot of concepts and ideas... 00:07:11.65\00:07:14.46 things about the Shabbat Queen and all this. 00:07:14.66\00:07:17.50 Can you talk just a little bit about some of those traditional 00:07:17.70\00:07:19.91 things for us? One of the things is 00:07:20.12\00:07:23.74 the principle behind all the tradition: to make the 00:07:23.94\00:07:27.25 Sabbath special. Yes, absolutely! 00:07:27.36\00:07:30.40 And of course we didn't have at this time 00:07:30.60\00:07:34.90 first century, second century. We want to backtrack to 00:07:35.10\00:07:39.65 when Jesus lived on this earth. Yes. 00:07:39.86\00:07:42.13 There was no wax candle and nice candleholders 00:07:42.33\00:07:47.92 you know, with... But you know what? While you're... 00:07:48.12\00:07:50.01 Before you go any further let me bring one thing in about this 00:07:50.11\00:07:53.32 because the question was asked: you know, we have these 00:07:53.42\00:07:55.76 beautiful things: the beautiful silver, cup, and plate 00:07:55.96\00:08:00.23 and these beautiful candle- holders. You know, one of the 00:08:00.43\00:08:03.50 things that I always loved within Judaism is... 00:08:03.60\00:08:06.87 And it's not that you're trying to be over the top 00:08:07.10\00:08:09.98 with these things but it's just this whole idea 00:08:10.18\00:08:12.54 that everything that we do we want to honor God 00:08:12.74\00:08:16.05 to the highest that we can. 00:08:16.25\00:08:17.62 So with whatever resources God has given you 00:08:17.65\00:08:19.68 when it comes to the things that we are using 00:08:19.78\00:08:22.28 especially to honor Him: the Shabbat cup, the candleholders 00:08:22.48\00:08:25.84 we want to be able to provide the best that we possibly can. 00:08:26.04\00:08:28.69 And so that's why these things have a tendency to be 00:08:28.89\00:08:31.36 more decorative and more ornate. 00:08:31.56\00:08:33.28 And the ornament on these candleholders 00:08:33.39\00:08:36.16 is very typical for Jewish com- munity that lives in diaspora. 00:08:36.36\00:08:40.39 It's the images of Jerusalem. Again let me say, diaspora 00:08:40.59\00:08:44.06 means these are Jews that live outside... now would be 00:08:44.26\00:08:48.00 outside of Israel but it would have been outside of Judea. 00:08:48.10\00:08:50.97 Anyone that lives... so we're in the disaspora. 00:08:51.17\00:08:54.46 Yeah, but regardless of where Jews live 00:08:54.66\00:08:57.56 their eyes are always focused on Jerusalem. 00:08:57.76\00:09:00.58 So you've got these Jerusalem candleholders. Yes. 00:09:00.78\00:09:03.77 But back in those times in Judea of the first century 00:09:03.97\00:09:07.24 and the turn of the eras there was nothing like this. Right. 00:09:07.44\00:09:11.14 The archaeologists have found numerous clay lamps 00:09:11.34\00:09:17.25 like this shape. Right. And these lamps were... 00:09:17.46\00:09:21.70 That was the lighting fixture of the day. 00:09:21.80\00:09:25.78 The problem was that these lamps 00:09:25.98\00:09:28.99 were basically using oil... olive oil. 00:09:29.19\00:09:33.50 Yes. And olive oil is the major staple. 00:09:33.70\00:09:36.78 The level of poverty... you can't compare it to anything 00:09:37.28\00:09:42.09 back in those days. The majority of the people 00:09:42.19\00:09:45.15 lived an extremely simple life - 00:09:45.35\00:09:49.16 in poverty it was really - 00:09:49.36\00:09:52.89 and, you know, the gallon of olive oil... I mean, you can 00:09:53.09\00:09:57.37 spend today $30, $35. You buy a nice gallon of olive oil. 00:09:57.47\00:10:01.96 And you know, three hours of work - something like this. 00:10:02.16\00:10:07.36 The same amount of olive oil would cost back in those days 00:10:07.56\00:10:12.21 for some day laborers up to three months' income. 00:10:12.41\00:10:18.11 And so lighting in a house 00:10:18.31\00:10:22.65 it wasn't the option. 00:10:22.85\00:10:25.12 For many families it wasn't the option. 00:10:25.32\00:10:27.46 People would go to sleep with sundown 00:10:27.66\00:10:31.36 and rise for work with the sunrise. 00:10:31.46\00:10:33.92 So the Sabbath was an exception 00:10:34.12\00:10:37.77 because that day you're supposed to spend time together 00:10:38.07\00:10:43.06 as a community so you do light the candles. 00:10:43.26\00:10:46.42 So this is how far we can trace the idea 00:10:46.82\00:10:50.45 of having the light on Shabbat. Right. 00:10:50.65\00:10:53.47 So let's talk about the idea now of the fruit of the vine 00:10:54.57\00:10:58.95 and this blessing. And it's really probably rightly put 00:10:59.15\00:11:03.64 sanctification of the Sabbath through the cup. Correct? 00:11:03.84\00:11:07.29 Yes, yes. And when we talk about the Sabbath 00:11:07.49\00:11:10.87 we have to have in mind 00:11:11.07\00:11:14.91 Genesis chapter 2... what the Lord does. 00:11:15.11\00:11:19.26 He blesses; He sanctifies; 00:11:19.46\00:11:24.36 and He makes. Right. 00:11:24.56\00:11:30.14 So I also know within Jewish tradition today there's 00:11:31.27\00:11:34.38 the two main themes. Actually He rests. 00:11:34.58\00:11:37.00 So He rested, blessed, and sanctified. 00:11:37.20\00:11:39.13 So everything on the Sabbath greeting is about these three 00:11:39.33\00:11:45.31 actions. Right. And it's the remembrance... 00:11:45.41\00:11:47.07 To remember what God had done. Exactly; exactly. Right. 00:11:47.27\00:11:50.80 So let's talk a little bit about the bread. 00:11:50.94\00:11:52.88 You know, I've had many people get confused because 00:11:53.08\00:11:56.62 within the Christian community as soon as you talk about 00:11:56.82\00:11:59.60 bread and juice or wine 00:11:59.70\00:12:01.44 then right away their mind goes to the Lord's Table 00:12:01.65\00:12:04.13 or communion. And this isn't anything like that at all. 00:12:04.33\00:12:07.41 No. That goes back... This is a totally different thing. 00:12:07.61\00:12:09.98 So you know, that's maybe a different program 00:12:10.19\00:12:12.06 and a different time. So let's just talk a little bit. 00:12:12.16\00:12:14.67 You know, the challah and the idea that this represents 00:12:14.87\00:12:19.02 all foods... not just bread. Exactly. The idea of 00:12:19.22\00:12:22.87 the bread on Sabbath goes back to the shewbread 00:12:22.90\00:12:27.37 table which is at the sanctuary. 00:12:27.57\00:12:30.32 And you already mentioned also the manna 00:12:30.52\00:12:32.85 and that's why we have two. But the general idea 00:12:33.05\00:12:36.02 Biblically goes back to the ritual of the shewbread. 00:12:36.22\00:12:39.77 Because remember in the sanctuary there were daily 00:12:39.97\00:12:43.11 rituals - yes. Offerings of the lambs 00:12:43.21\00:12:46.74 and lighting of the seven-lamp candle and the incense. 00:12:46.84\00:12:52.06 There were yearly rituals. We discussed the festivals. 00:12:52.40\00:12:57.21 And there were weekly rituals. And the only one weekly ritual 00:12:57.41\00:13:02.51 which we have is the ritual where a priest would consume 00:13:02.71\00:13:08.05 and replace the bread... the twelve breads... 00:13:08.25\00:13:12.74 at a special table in the Holy Place. That's right. 00:13:12.94\00:13:15.69 This ritual is important because it shows... 00:13:15.83\00:13:21.02 it goes directly opposite to pagan sanctuary. 00:13:21.22\00:13:26.88 In the pagan worship the theology is that people 00:13:27.08\00:13:31.46 feed God. Yeah, that's right. 00:13:31.66\00:13:36.02 And here we pray to God and we say: "Blessed are You, 00:13:36.22\00:13:40.73 O Lord God, who gives the bread to us from the ground. " 00:13:40.84\00:13:44.82 Exactly. Right; right. So a really important part 00:13:45.02\00:13:48.33 of this then is the idea of us gathering together. 00:13:48.43\00:13:52.36 And Shabbat is so much about community 00:13:52.50\00:13:54.87 and about fellowship within the family. 00:13:55.08\00:13:56.67 And it's really from a Jewish perspective 00:13:56.88\00:14:01.68 it never should be a burden, it never should be a labor. 00:14:01.88\00:14:04.98 The Shabbat is always a joy to us. 00:14:05.19\00:14:07.21 That it's something that you work hard all week long 00:14:07.41\00:14:10.23 and then when we come to the Shabbat it's not: "Oh, man, 00:14:10.43\00:14:12.98 it's the Shabbat. " No, it's: "Ah, thank you Lord. 00:14:13.08\00:14:16.42 It's the Shabbat. " I don't have to pick up my 00:14:16.52\00:14:18.04 cell phone; I don't have to check my e-mail; I don't have to 00:14:18.14\00:14:20.69 work. I can just be together with my family and friends 00:14:20.79\00:14:22.97 and rejoice in the Shabbat. 00:14:23.17\00:14:24.54 Rachel, you've prepared a song for us today. Um-hmm. 00:14:24.57\00:14:27.55 And I'd love to invite you to go over and get ready. 00:14:27.75\00:14:30.55 We have our friend Martin who is with us once again. 00:14:30.75\00:14:33.67 Welcome Martin. 00:14:33.97\00:14:35.34 And Rachel, what's the name of the song today? 00:14:35.46\00:14:37.85 It's called Shabbat Qodesh which means 00:14:38.05\00:14:40.53 holy Sabbath. It's kind of like a Hebrew version 00:14:40.73\00:14:43.42 of This is the day that the Lord has made. All right! 00:14:43.62\00:14:45.59 Well let's rejoice. 00:14:45.80\00:14:47.51 Amen; amen. 00:18:16.15\00:18:18.01 Rachel, why don't you come on back over. 00:18:18.21\00:18:19.72 Martin, why don't you come join us as we close the Shabbat? 00:18:19.93\00:18:23.30 We've had just a wonderful Sabbath with our family together 00:18:24.87\00:18:29.40 and a Sabbath meal and a day with the Lord. 00:18:29.60\00:18:31.56 And as the sun begins to set on the Shabbat 00:18:31.76\00:18:35.22 we have a special little ceremony that we do 00:18:35.35\00:18:38.37 that's called havdalah. 00:18:38.47\00:18:39.84 Havdalah. The Hebrew word it comes from 00:18:39.87\00:18:42.19 the Hebrew L'havdil, 00:18:42.29\00:18:43.66 and it means to separate or to differentiate. 00:18:43.69\00:18:46.98 And what it is is that we're leaving the sacredness, 00:18:47.19\00:18:49.78 the beauty of the Shabbat but now we're going into the 00:18:49.99\00:18:52.95 secular week. But see, the thing is is that 00:18:53.05\00:18:55.86 when we leave the Shabbat we don't want to just leave it 00:18:56.06\00:18:58.34 behind. We want to be able to take a little bit of the 00:18:58.45\00:19:01.50 Shabbat with us throughout the week. 00:19:01.60\00:19:03.79 So havdalah we start and it's chanted with a cup. 00:19:03.99\00:19:08.07 And we fill it with the fruit of the vine. 00:19:08.27\00:19:10.92 We fill the cup. 00:19:15.21\00:19:16.58 And we say a blessing over the cup. 00:19:18.36\00:19:20.58 Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, 00:19:24.30\00:19:26.28 who brought forth the fruit of the vine. 00:19:26.48\00:19:29.05 We don't pass this one around. Sorry. 00:19:29.35\00:19:32.64 He's lookin' at me: I want some juice. 00:19:32.84\00:19:34.49 And then these other strange things that we have: 00:19:34.69\00:19:37.95 we have a special little container. 00:19:38.15\00:19:41.97 This is called a spice box. 00:19:42.18\00:19:43.55 Now I wish those of you watching could enjoy the smell. 00:19:43.67\00:19:48.29 In just a minute we're going to pass this around 00:19:48.43\00:19:50.09 and it's got this beautiful aromatic smell of cinnamon 00:19:50.29\00:19:54.24 and cloves and all kinds of things. 00:19:54.45\00:19:56.28 And it's to remind us of the sweetness of Shabbat 00:19:56.48\00:19:59.68 and what the newness of creation will be 00:19:59.88\00:20:02.59 when God returns. Since Shabbat is a memorial 00:20:02.79\00:20:05.64 of creation we also have this special braided candle. 00:20:05.84\00:20:10.27 Now if you remember, when we started the Shabbat 00:20:10.47\00:20:12.90 Rachel lit two candles and there was a small little flame. 00:20:13.10\00:20:16.53 But we're going to light this one in just a minute 00:20:16.77\00:20:18.67 and you're going to see it's a much bigger flame. 00:20:18.77\00:20:20.59 And the whole idea is that the light that we go out of the 00:20:20.79\00:20:23.86 Shabbat with should be so much more 00:20:23.96\00:20:26.36 than the light that we came in with. 00:20:26.56\00:20:28.20 Because we've spent the whole time with God. Yes? Amen? 00:20:28.40\00:20:32.29 And we say: "Behold, God is my salvation. 00:20:32.49\00:20:35.32 I will trust and I will not be afraid 00:20:35.52\00:20:37.95 for the Lord my God, He is my strength and my song. 00:20:38.15\00:20:41.15 And He also has become - we could say - my Yeshua... " 00:20:41.18\00:20:45.01 which is His name but that also means my salvation. 00:20:45.21\00:20:48.59 We light this and then we come back over 00:20:48.79\00:20:52.75 to the spices. And I'm going to open it up. 00:20:52.95\00:20:55.33 Mmm, I love this smell. Here, smell this. 00:20:55.53\00:20:57.83 Do you smell it? Smell it again. 00:20:59.00\00:21:01.24 He's afraid to stick his nose down there. 00:21:01.44\00:21:02.82 Here. And we're going to pass this around and everyone 00:21:03.22\00:21:05.89 will get a sniff. And we say: 00:21:05.99\00:21:08.14 "Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Creator of the universe, 00:21:14.80\00:21:17.74 who creates the species of spices. " 00:21:17.94\00:21:19.91 Doesn't that smell good? 00:21:20.01\00:21:21.38 You know, some... In some traditions they'll take 00:21:21.41\00:21:23.93 the cloves and they'll have a big handful. 00:21:24.13\00:21:26.55 And everyone will take a little handful of cloves. 00:21:26.75\00:21:29.05 And they put it in their pocket so that when they leave 00:21:29.25\00:21:31.91 on the Shabbat, when it's over, 00:21:32.11\00:21:33.85 they have these cloves in their pocket 00:21:33.95\00:21:35.67 that all week long you can take the cloves 00:21:35.87\00:21:38.18 and you can smell them. You go: "Oh man, I can't wait 00:21:38.38\00:21:40.25 for Shabbat to come again 'cause it smells so good. " 00:21:40.35\00:21:44.15 And then we take this special candle 00:21:44.35\00:21:46.98 and we say the blessing over the candle. 00:21:47.18\00:21:49.13 "Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe 00:21:55.27\00:21:57.51 who creates the light of fire. " 00:21:57.61\00:21:59.08 And then because we believe that Yeshua is the light of the 00:21:59.28\00:22:03.05 world - Jesus is the light of the world - we add this 00:22:03.15\00:22:05.09 and we say: "In Him was life and the life was the light of men. 00:22:05.13\00:22:09.56 And the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness 00:22:09.76\00:22:12.36 didn't understand it. " 00:22:12.46\00:22:13.83 Now there's such a great and beautiful teaching 00:22:13.97\00:22:16.60 that we have with the havdalah candle. 00:22:16.80\00:22:18.76 And because we're in a studio we have all these bright lights. 00:22:18.96\00:22:22.13 We can't see it as well but you have to imagine 00:22:22.33\00:22:25.32 that you know, no matter how small the light is, 00:22:25.52\00:22:28.96 how small the flame is, you can take one little candle 00:22:29.16\00:22:32.11 or one little match and you can be in a completely 00:22:32.31\00:22:34.98 black dark room and that one little candle, 00:22:35.09\00:22:38.26 once your eyes adjust, you'll be able to see the whole room. 00:22:38.36\00:22:41.50 Right? So the idea is is that this light that we see 00:22:41.70\00:22:45.64 the light always pushes the darkness away. 00:22:45.77\00:22:48.49 And Jesus - Yeshua - is the light of the world. 00:22:48.90\00:22:51.50 You see, where that light is darkness can never dwell. 00:22:51.70\00:22:55.54 Isn't that a wonderful thing? 00:22:55.74\00:22:57.59 Yeah? Yeah... say "yeah. " 00:22:57.79\00:23:00.88 And then we say: "Arise and shine 00:23:01.08\00:23:04.31 for the light has come and the glory of the Lord 00:23:04.51\00:23:07.17 has risen upon you. " And the glory of the Lord 00:23:07.27\00:23:10.47 we're speaking of, of course for us, is our Messiah 00:23:10.67\00:23:13.67 Yeshua. Amen? He truly is the light of the world. 00:23:13.78\00:23:17.45 And then we say: "Blessed are You, O Lord our God, 00:23:17.65\00:23:20.03 King of the universe who makes a distinction 00:23:20.23\00:23:22.95 between the holy and the secular; 00:23:23.15\00:23:25.45 light and darkness; Israel and the nations; 00:23:25.65\00:23:29.22 the seventh day and the sixth day of labor. 00:23:29.43\00:23:31.73 Blessed are You, O Lord our God, 00:23:31.93\00:23:33.73 who makes a distinction between the holy 00:23:33.93\00:23:36.66 and the secular. " And at this point 00:23:36.87\00:23:39.12 the Shabbat is coming completely to an end now. 00:23:39.32\00:23:43.97 We've had a beautiful day. 00:23:44.17\00:23:45.95 And we've rested and we've enjoyed fellowship 00:23:46.16\00:23:49.78 and we've had great meals. 00:23:49.88\00:23:51.67 Don't you love the Shabbat meals? 00:23:51.87\00:23:53.75 I do. Um-hmm. You know, what I love 00:23:53.96\00:23:56.03 about the Shabbat meals is that they're just waiting. 00:23:56.23\00:23:58.82 We come home from service after the morning 00:23:59.02\00:24:01.27 and there's this big meal just waiting for us to dive in 00:24:01.48\00:24:05.18 and eat it. You know? Do you like that? 00:24:05.28\00:24:07.92 Yeah, we all like that. 00:24:08.12\00:24:10.22 And you know, guys, the whole idea for us 00:24:10.43\00:24:14.21 and the Shabbat is that even to say that I keep 00:24:14.41\00:24:18.77 the Shabbat infers that it takes work to do it. 00:24:18.97\00:24:22.80 So we should never say we keep the Shabbat. 00:24:23.00\00:24:26.67 We keep the Sabbath. No! We celebrate 00:24:26.87\00:24:29.91 the Sabbath. We celebrate what God has given us. 00:24:30.11\00:24:33.44 We celebrate that God... He created all things 00:24:33.64\00:24:37.52 and then the scripture says on the seventh day He rested. 00:24:37.72\00:24:40.64 And He said: "I want you to remember that if God 00:24:40.84\00:24:44.40 can rest then how much more should you as My creation, 00:24:44.60\00:24:49.06 as My children, rest on the Sabbath day. " 00:24:49.09\00:24:52.22 So we have to remember that. 00:24:52.42\00:24:53.97 That the Sabbath day is a joy. It is a time to sit back 00:24:54.17\00:24:58.75 and be with friends and talk and share things. 00:24:58.95\00:25:03.56 It's a time that we put aside all of the things that we do 00:25:03.76\00:25:06.69 normally through the week, right? 00:25:06.79\00:25:08.99 You know, a good rule to remember is if you do it 00:25:09.29\00:25:11.77 through the week you don't do it on Shabbat. 00:25:11.87\00:25:14.37 Right? Because then it's common. 00:25:14.67\00:25:16.89 That's right. You know for some people 00:25:17.09\00:25:19.06 oh to relax is to sit down on the couch 00:25:19.26\00:25:21.22 and maybe put the TV on. 00:25:21.32\00:25:22.90 That's not the right thing to do, is it? 00:25:22.93\00:25:24.88 Because all week long people are sitting on the couch 00:25:25.08\00:25:27.24 watching TV. We're supposed to get together 00:25:27.44\00:25:30.77 as a family and talk - bond - and enjoy good food. 00:25:30.87\00:25:34.17 And really look forward... You know, for a lot of people 00:25:34.37\00:25:37.54 that might be the only time that they actually come together 00:25:37.74\00:25:41.41 as a family. And some of the best memories 00:25:41.52\00:25:44.85 that we ever make are the ones of us sitting around. 00:25:45.05\00:25:48.59 And you know, our society is so full of broken families. 00:25:48.72\00:25:53.48 Of children that never have the time with their parents. 00:25:53.68\00:25:58.28 If we were honoring, if we were celebrating the Shabbat 00:25:58.48\00:26:02.27 in the way that God asked us to do 00:26:02.47\00:26:04.37 that wouldn't be happening 00:26:04.47\00:26:05.84 because we would be focusing, we would be saying blessings 00:26:05.87\00:26:09.35 upon our children and our wives and our friends 00:26:09.46\00:26:11.94 and our family. We would be coming together 00:26:12.04\00:26:14.28 especially that one time. And you know what I've found 00:26:14.39\00:26:17.12 is that when you do it on the Shabbat and it's such a joy 00:26:17.32\00:26:21.34 you get hungry for it, right? 00:26:21.54\00:26:24.26 Man, I really love the time that we sat down together. 00:26:24.39\00:26:27.79 We had a meal and we just talked. 00:26:27.89\00:26:29.84 And you know, just because we do this on the Shabbat 00:26:30.04\00:26:32.64 doesn't mean we can't do it many other days through the week. 00:26:32.84\00:26:36.11 And that's the idea that we want to be hungry. 00:26:36.21\00:26:38.22 The Shabbat is something very special, 00:26:38.42\00:26:40.12 but God created it so that we could rest, 00:26:40.32\00:26:42.55 so that we could fellowship. 00:26:42.75\00:26:44.46 So as the sun has set on another Shabbat 00:26:44.66\00:26:47.76 the last thing that we do is what's left of the juice 00:26:47.96\00:26:52.39 is we take the cup and we begin to pour out the cup. 00:26:52.59\00:26:56.79 And for us as believers in Jesus as our Messiah 00:26:56.99\00:27:00.43 what I believe we should understand is just as we 00:27:01.40\00:27:04.76 pour out this cup we need to remember that our 00:27:04.96\00:27:07.47 Messiah - that Jesus - poured out His life for us. 00:27:07.57\00:27:11.20 And may we through this week 00:27:11.60\00:27:15.13 God, with Your strength and Your Holy Spirit, 00:27:15.33\00:27:18.44 may we also pour out our lives for Him. Um-hmm. 00:27:18.74\00:27:24.15 We pour it all out and the last thing that we do 00:27:26.23\00:27:29.79 is we take the havdalah candle 00:27:29.99\00:27:31.84 and we extinguish the candle in the juice. 00:27:32.14\00:27:37.52 Sorry. No one gets to drink it. 00:27:37.72\00:27:39.40 We extinguish the candle and we declare that God is holy. 00:27:39.60\00:27:44.18 He is holy; He is holy. 00:27:44.48\00:27:47.16 And we say: "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh. " 00:27:47.36\00:27:49.48 That means God is three times holy 00:27:49.58\00:27:51.62 because He is the One that gives us the Shabbat. 00:27:51.82\00:27:55.68 God bless you and we hope to see you very soon 00:27:55.88\00:27:58.91 on Back To Our Roots. 00:27:59.11\00:28:00.95
