to turn away from our sins

and to follow in His
law of righteousness?

Have their instructions been
often mocked and turned away

from in our home, our churches,

There's a powerful
example given in Scripture.

And I just want to
just allude to that

and go just
quickly through that.

And because you'll say,
"Well, I don't know of anybody

that ever mocked
God's messengers."

See, we need to be
careful what we say, what we do,

what seeds that we plant about
those whom God has appointed
00:08:44.85\00:08:49.42
to give the
message to the world.
00:08:49.46\00:08:51.99
And some of us have been
very loose over the years,
00:08:52.03\00:08:54.36
including myself as a,
certainly as a younger person
00:08:54.40\00:08:57.37
of making a lot of comments
00:08:57.40\00:08:58.87
that maybe should
not have been made.
00:08:58.90\00:09:00.64
And seeds that I've
planted that influence
00:09:00.67\00:09:02.60
other people's
thought and their attitude.
00:09:02.64\00:09:05.57
In 2 Kings, I'd like
for you to have your Bible.

You turn with me
to the book 2 Kings.
00:09:07.68\00:09:09.84
This is very
familiar, nothing new.
00:09:09.88\00:09:12.35
But notice how God
views, how God views His people
00:09:12.38\00:09:18.39
and the ones He is
called to do a work for Him.
00:09:18.42\00:09:21.52
And sometime we
might get in the way,
00:09:21.56\00:09:23.86
and God has ways to remove
00:09:23.89\00:09:26.59
those who are
trying to slow down
00:09:26.63\00:09:28.63
or retard His work.
00:09:28.66\00:09:30.23
And you don't want to be

one of those and I don't either.

You'll know this
very well as in second...

Soon as I began to
read it, if you're not...

You haven't been familiar
say, "Oh yeah, I remember that."

Now remember,
Elijah had just right...

The way he went
up into the heavens.

His mantle or his
power was given to Elisha.

So God had been at work

in a marvelous mighty way

and then something happened.

Remember, anytime God is
working in a marvelous way,

the devil is also working.

And make sure me, you,

we're not that one
that the devil can use

to try to slow it down.

Here's what happened
in verse 23 at 2 Kings 2.
00:10:17.05\00:10:20.48
It says, "And he went
up from thence unto Bethel:
00:10:20.52\00:10:24.32
and as he was
going up by the way,
00:10:24.35\00:10:26.72
there came forth
little children,"
00:10:26.76\00:10:28.99
young people
really is what it means,
00:10:29.02\00:10:30.39
"out of the city
and they mocked him
00:10:30.43\00:10:34.46
and said unto him,
'Go up, thou bald head,
00:10:34.50\00:10:36.80
go up thou bald head!"
00:10:36.83\00:10:38.17
Verse 24, "And he turned back,
00:10:38.20\00:10:40.00
and looked on
them and he cursed them
00:10:40.04\00:10:42.44
in the name of the Lord."
00:10:42.47\00:10:44.04
Interesting.
00:10:44.07\00:10:45.41
"And there came forth
two she-bears out of the wood
00:10:45.44\00:10:48.81
and tare forty and two children.
00:10:48.84\00:10:51.68
Bears had killed them.
00:10:51.71\00:10:53.05
They were killed
forty and two young people.

Man, that sounds drastic.

Why would something
like this take place?

It's a powerful example of
00:11:02.99\00:11:05.09
how God views, you know,
00:11:05.13\00:11:07.63
those who laugh, those who mock,
00:11:07.66\00:11:11.03
those who make light comments,
00:11:11.07\00:11:14.04
show a lack of respect
00:11:14.07\00:11:16.50
for those God has
called to work in His vineyard.
00:11:16.54\00:11:20.18
Think about it.
00:11:20.21\00:11:22.48
Sounds like a harsh punishment.
00:11:22.51\00:11:24.48
When I first heard
that as a young child,
00:11:24.51\00:11:26.92
I said, "Surely,
that was not of God."
00:11:26.95\00:11:30.02
But as you
study and as you look,
00:11:30.05\00:11:32.85
certainly God was in control.
00:11:32.89\00:11:36.62
These young people, see,
00:11:36.66\00:11:38.79
they had heard
about Elijah's ascension.
00:11:38.83\00:11:44.07
Remember this
ascension time was a solemn act.
00:11:44.10\00:11:48.27
God had worked a mighty miracle.
00:11:48.30\00:11:53.27
Heaven came down.
00:11:53.31\00:11:55.94
Elijah translated into
heaven without seeing death.
00:11:55.98\00:12:00.88
It was directed by God.
00:12:00.92\00:12:05.55
This was a man of God.
00:12:05.59\00:12:08.36
And God looked down
and saw him and said,
00:12:08.39\00:12:10.13
"I want you where I am."
00:12:10.16\00:12:12.76
What a representative of mankind

how God wants us to be today.

So I look at it as a
miracle was performed

right then and there.

But Elijah now was gone
and Elisha had the mantle

and was going to take
where Elijah left off.
00:12:27.11\00:12:31.11
So remember, God
then appointed him,

and now here came
some ungodly youth.
00:12:33.68\00:12:39.49
There's ungodly
everybody in the world today,
00:12:39.52\00:12:41.52
be it young, old,
whatever it might be,
00:12:41.56\00:12:43.29
but these ungodly youth came on
00:12:43.32\00:12:45.76
and they mocked and
they laughed at Elisha,
00:12:45.79\00:12:48.83
who was right on
00:12:48.86\00:12:50.37
getting ready to
pick up his work.
00:12:50.40\00:12:51.73
He wasn't going
to take a vacation.
00:12:51.77\00:12:53.10
I've just been appointed.
00:12:53.13\00:12:54.47
I'm going to take some time off.
00:12:54.50\00:12:55.84
He immediately went to work.
00:12:55.87\00:12:58.14
And they basically said to him,
00:12:58.17\00:13:00.38
"Well, why don't
you just go on up too?
00:13:00.41\00:13:02.24
We don't need you."

Let me paraphrase.

Why don't you too just go on up?

We don't need you.
We don't like your kind.

You might have heard
that some time in your work.

Remember, as God had
just appointed him as leader,

just immediately, who steps in?

The enemy, the
devil steps in immediately

and tries to steal the miracle.

Tries to steal
because eyes, ears,

and this would be told
and retold over the centuries.

And certainly as it took
place, it circled the villages

and the town just like that.

And the devil says

we can't have no
religious, you know,

just uprising right
now, which is a good thing.

We just can't have it.

They mocked the
messengers of God.

And so the enemy
says, "I'm going to stop it

because I'm going to
try to hurt the work.

And then I'm going to try
to hurt the messenger of God

because if something can be said

to hurt the message
and the messenger of God,

it won't do what
it's supposed to do."

Well, that still sounds like,

oh my, 42 young people
killed by some she-bears.

What if that mockery
and what they had just done

in spite of what
God had just done,

and there had been no rebuke?

Huh.

What if they were
permitted to go unpunished

and nothing said?

Elisha's work
would have been retarded.

not have been the same

because the people
would not look at it

Just like we must be careful
what we say about leadership

in certain positions,

because it can hurt
the cause of Christ,

not just an individual,
but the cause of Christ.

If it had gone unrebuked,

the enemy would
have won a battle.

Prophets and Kings,

"The so-called..."

so-called tenderness,

the coaxing."

Listen, this is for parents.

Listen carefully,
"The so-called tenderness,

the coaxing, and the indulgences

used toward youth by
parents or guardians," listen,

"is one of the worst evils

which can come upon them.

In every family, firmness,
decision, positive requirements

are essential."

It's one of the worst evils

that can come
upon the young people

when you just try to coax.

You don't have rules
and regulations and times,

and you just try to pat

and get by and, you
know, that's not good.

Our young people need to be

taught to respect,
we call, their elders.

They need to be...

to respect people.

Respect and reverence should be

shown for God's representatives,

for God's teachers.

His people, the teachers,

parents who are
called to be spokesmen

or to speak for God.

See, sometime we forget that.

Oh, it's just the preacher.

Sabbath school teacher.

been called of God?

There was this one bad situation

attack to what God had done.

That lasted over 50 years.

Fifty years Elisha came

and went through
the gates of the city.

He traveled all around the land

and not one
time is ever recorded

that anyone ever said
anything to him again.

Not one thing, not one
youth, not one ungodly.

And he walked
among them constantly.

They never said anything

because there was a
lesson that was taught.

Maybe not so severe like that,

that we make sure
