So I thought maybe we should

to begin with,

then we might have an idea

of where Pastor Shelton's
focus will be upon today.

"The Spirit itself
beareth witness with our spirit,

that we are children of God:

And if the children, then heirs,

You know,

I know when I first
accepted Christ into my heart,

I really didn't
understand or grasped

the depths of the
warfare between good and evil.

I suppose in that respect,

many of us are like
the disciples of old,

where while
Christ was yet with them,
00:01:47.34\00:01:49.57
teaching, loving, healing
and drawing others to Himself.

When Christ tried to explain
that He would be put to death,
00:01:54.41\00:01:58.95
it is a thought they
refused to contemplate or accept

that happening to the Messiah
that they love so very dearly.

In their minds,

their newfound relationship
and belief in the Messiah

would only
continue to become grander

and wonderful,

as they believed

He would become Israel's
earthly King at that time.

What
overwhelming joy and happiness

they must have
experienced in His presence,

as they witnessed
thousands being fed

from two small fish

and to empathize

with the untold number of people

who would be healed

as they traveled
from place to place.

Just think about
it, the blind would see,

the lame would walk again,

the dead would
come back to life.

Imagine
witnessing such miracles.

In some respect,

we know we really do
imagine these experiences.

We do see them to a
point in our mind's eye.

And there are times
that we do experience

the presence of the Holy Spirit
from time to time in our lives.

Many have seen the
sick miraculously healed.

And what a blessing is that

peace that
passes all understanding

in this life of turmoil.

Our minds tend to
dwell on these blessings,

while avoiding the heartache,

anguish, pain, and
struggles with faith

that are also a part
of our walk with Christ.

In His love He
has left us prophetic

and literal
examples of these struggles

that even He
Himself suffered through.

These sufferings are the result
of the warfare for our souls.

For we wrestle not
against flesh and blood,

but against
principalities, against powers,

against the rulers of
the darkness of this world,

bit before I get on that

about a value of pain

and about a man
who suffered some pain.

And notice what it says,
it says, he was supposed,

this man was going to
speak and he was going to speak

at the Moody
Founder's Week Conference.

And he received a
letter from the president,

you know, of that committee.
00:11:33.02\00:11:34.36
And he said,
00:11:34.39\00:11:35.72
"You know, I want
all the speakers there.
00:11:35.76\00:11:37.23
I want them to really get down
and labor with God in prayer.
00:11:37.26\00:11:40.10
I want them pray for the
power of the Holy Spirit,
00:11:40.13\00:11:42.63
and I want them to go,
I want to be a blessing."

But it says every,

every speaker
there needs to understand

what it means to
receive the blessings

that God wants to give

come to this meeting

with a broken heart.

Broken heart, what
does all that mean?

And this man
thought was interesting,

a broken heart.

He loved those words
and he embraced those words.

And as soon as he heard
them, he got down on his knees,

that's going to
be there this week

but I'm responsible
for my own state of heart.

notice these words,

"Lord, I ask you now, whatever,"

to send me with a broken heart."

And so he began, he prayed that,

so he prayed
several days in advance,

and he was, oh,

he was in some other
country for a little while

and then he was just
getting ready to come back.

He's going to meet his wife,

and they were just going to
go to this conference together.

But notice what happened

while he was still
going away in another country,

he got a
overseas telephone call,

says your wife died of
a heart attack at 1 pm.

And he said she
was to have met me

on Monday in Chicago,

where we planned on be at
the Founder's Week together

at this meeting.

She was supposed
to meet me there,

but now she's dead.

He said,

"My, this was such a
difficult struggle for me.

I fell to my
knees beside my bed.
00:13:13.59\00:13:17.26
And I said,

"Lord, I'll still go.
00:13:18.66\00:13:20.63
You give me the grace and
the power and the strength,

and I'll speak at
this Founder's Week meeting

that You've planned

and You have
answered my prayers in a way

I never anticipated or thought.

But I will accept Your answer."

"I want my heart broken."

Very interesting.

meeting with my heart broken,

humbling before You."

And he stood
before this huge audience

and he began to speak.

Two days after he
buried, he says here,

"Buried my sweet Christian wife.
00:14:02.20\00:14:05.64
But this was the
first step in victory

over what others might
have been a crushing defeat."

He looked at it as a
first step of victory

that he needed in
his Christian experience.

"Lord, break my heart
before these meetings,"

and his heart
was broken in a way

that he never
thought it would be.

But it drew him closer to Jesus,

not separating him.

That's God's plan
for us as we will know.

that we read, he said,

"I reckon that the
sufferings of this present time

I wonder how often
that we as a people,

when we're going
through tests and trials

and going through what we're
going through with the COVID-19

and all these things,

and you have to stay inside,

you got to be six feet apart,

and you have to wear a mask

and they're trying to make
it that law to really confine us

and put us in a box,

want to close the churches down,

a lot of them are closed
down, they have half a services,

when the only place that

maybe should be
open is the church.

Instead of closing the doors

and telling you
can't have church,

the devil is
heckling and laughing.

And by God's grace,

we need to keep our
doors open right now,

because people are suffering.

Many have died.

Think about this,
if you have loved ones

who may be in nursing
home, and they've died,

contacted this COVID-19,

and you couldn't even
basically go to the funeral.

You can't visit them
in the nursing homes.

You couldn't see
them and they passed away

and you couldn't
visit, you couldn't pray.

It's just...

What a horrible
nightmare that would be.

It's hard enough to face it,

when you can go through all
the necessary steps to heal.

I found that many times

that God doesn't
prevent evil men to work evil.

Many times He
doesn't prevent them

to do that,

but He has a way of
turning that evil into good

as you will know,

especially when
persecution comes.

You know, my thought
always is with God's people

who hear these
messages to be encouraged

that there is
persecution coming.

There is, Paul said what?

"For I reckon
that the sufferings

of the present time

are not worthy to be compared

to what's going to
happen in the future."

So sometime we have to weigh,

every time we go through
persecutions and distress

and heartache
and test and trials,

what's coming around the corner?

There's better
things that are coming.

There's opposition

that's every time
you want to move forward,

there's opposition
in the cause of Christ.

There's
accusations that even come.

When you're in the public eye,

there's people
you're in a glass house,

and people see things
that maybe they shouldn't see

or maybe that's not
really taking place.

And it hits you pretty hard.

It tears your family apart.

And sometimes the
church family gets involved,

and they decide they want to do

a little bit of
talking about things.

They want to
gossip a little bit,

they want to talk
about some things.

And then once they
have their little meetings

and a little gossip,

they decide that
they're going to have a court.

And so they set it up

as it were and
they talk about it.

And then they
make a judgment on it

and then they pass
sentence on the people of God.

Maybe it's your family,
maybe it's your friends.

Surely we have something better
to do by the grace of God.

Remember, we are to go through,

furnace of affliction.

God sees fit for that.

This is a furnace of
trial and affliction,

pain that it cost.

That's hard when we're
going through that pain

and that affliction.

difficult time of our job

or loss of job and loss of home,

everything, loss of business,

which is going on
in the world today

by the hundreds of thousands

and people are still
saying in high places,

let's close it down again.

All because of
maybe an elected official.

They're willing to
sacrifice hundreds of thousands

and millions of people.

I understand we need to be safe,

and so on so forth.

But there's a way I'm sure

that we can be
approached by the grace of God.

Furnace of affliction,
is it really worth the pain?

I might say, "Yes, it is,"

and you'd say,
"Well, how is that?"

During these
times of persecution

and pain and sorrow and
