Today we are going to
look at a couple of stories

found in the book of Mathew 8

that many of us
are familiar with.

The first story is that
of Christ with His disciples

as they decide to get
in to a boat and cross over
00:01:02.37\00:01:05.32
to the other side of the lake.
00:01:05.35\00:01:07.15
Soon Christ falls
asleep as they sail.
00:01:07.18\00:01:10.33
And He remained asleep
as a tremendous wind storm
00:01:10.36\00:01:14.21
seiged round about the boat
filling their vessel with water.
00:01:14.24\00:01:18.83
Then the second
story we're going to study
00:01:18.86\00:01:21.72
took place once Christ
and His disciples had reached
00:01:21.75\00:01:24.92
the other side of the lake
00:01:24.95\00:01:26.49
and met up with two men
who were demon-possessed.

Friends, I believe, I believe
as you listen to today's message

about in the same boat today.

When Jesus entered in the
ship His disciples followed Him.

but He was asleep.

His disciples came to Him

them, 'Why are ye fearful,

Then He arose, and He rebuked

the winds and the sea,
and there was a great calm."

In other words Jesus what?

He forbid. He said "Stop.

Please be still."

Verse 27, "But the
men marveled, saying,

what manner of man is
this, that even the winds

and the sea obey Him!"

The setting of this
account is very interesting.
00:09:43.46\00:09:47.87
Once again your Savior,
00:09:47.90\00:09:49.27
my Savior out busy
laboring for souls,
00:09:49.30\00:09:52.53
working day in and day
out, from sun up to sun down,
00:09:52.56\00:09:56.56
seem to be no rest,
very little time to even eat.
00:09:56.59\00:10:00.95
He was meeting the
physical and the spiritual
00:10:00.98\00:10:03.69
needs of the people.
00:10:03.72\00:10:05.51
This is your
Savior, this is my Savior,
00:10:05.54\00:10:08.64
working in behalf of mankind.
00:10:08.67\00:10:11.04
But, you know,
Jesus in His human flesh,
00:10:11.07\00:10:14.01
made like we
are, He became tired
00:10:14.04\00:10:17.04
and we say worn out and
he needed a little rest.
00:10:17.07\00:10:20.76
But again the rest
that I believe that Jesus,
00:10:20.79\00:10:22.90
in studying this,
that Jesus had in mind
00:10:22.93\00:10:25.80
was as He went across the
lake there were folks over there
00:10:25.83\00:10:29.29
who had not had the opportunity
on that side of the lake,
00:10:29.32\00:10:31.97
listen carefully, as those on
this side had to hear about Him.
00:10:32.00\00:10:35.67
And so he was-- you know,
00:10:35.70\00:10:37.57
He was going to accomplish
a couple of things here.
00:10:37.60\00:10:40.18
And so they got
into the boat and they,
00:10:40.21\00:10:42.27
you know, was calm and
peaceful and wonderful.
00:10:42.30\00:10:46.25
And, you know, all of a
sudden here come this storm.
00:10:46.28\00:10:49.77
We call it out of nowhere.
00:10:49.80\00:10:51.78
Some of you've been,
maybe driving down the road
00:10:51.81\00:10:54.05
it seemed to be
peaceful and quiet
00:10:54.08\00:10:55.45
and all of a sudden
there's a storm that blew up.
00:10:55.48\00:10:57.27
We have that sometime
here in southern Illinois,
00:10:57.30\00:10:59.48
the summer heat and so on,
just all of a sudden here it is.
00:10:59.51\00:11:03.20
And it caught them by surprise.
00:11:03.23\00:11:05.78
The Bible gives the account
about the waves going so high
00:11:05.81\00:11:08.58
that it was covering the boat.
00:11:08.61\00:11:09.98
So if they go higher
than the boat that means
00:11:10.01\00:11:11.58
they're coming in
on top of the boat
00:11:11.61\00:11:13.11
and on top of the individuals.
00:11:13.14\00:11:15.62
So much so, that the disciples
feared for their very life.
00:11:15.65\00:11:20.11
And they began to cry out,
00:11:20.14\00:11:21.51
they began to
say, "we're gonna die."
00:11:21.54\00:11:23.93
Let me just
mention, as we study this,
00:11:23.96\00:11:26.02
we have to realize the disciples
00:11:26.05\00:11:28.27
and--I use this word here.
00:11:28.30\00:11:30.00
Just be careful with it but
the disciples were not sissies.
00:11:30.03\00:11:33.13
These were men.
00:11:33.16\00:11:35.04
These were fishermen.
00:11:35.07\00:11:36.44
These are who made
their life on the lake
00:11:36.47\00:11:39.46
and so they've
been through many storms
00:11:39.49\00:11:41.47
but this had to be
the storm of storms.
00:11:41.50\00:11:44.59
Now again why?
00:11:44.62\00:11:45.99
We realize the
enemy is the author
00:11:46.02\00:11:47.47
and behind this storm.
00:11:47.50\00:11:48.98
We have to realize this
because the devil says what?
00:11:49.01\00:11:51.74
Here is this little boat,
00:11:51.77\00:11:53.14
here is all of this big
lake out here and the storm,
00:11:53.17\00:11:55.32
we're gonna try
to sink that boat,
00:11:55.35\00:11:56.93
kill the
disciples, get rid of Jesus
00:11:56.96\00:11:58.79
and then we've got
things the way we want them.
00:11:58.82\00:12:01.80
My, what a surprise the
enemy had coming to Him.
00:12:01.83\00:12:06.35
Real men, fighting and
all of a sudden they say,
00:12:06.38\00:12:10.18
"You know,
uh-oh, we're in trouble.
00:12:10.21\00:12:12.69
We are in trouble.
00:12:12.72\00:12:14.47
We've never seen
anything like this in the world.
00:12:14.50\00:12:17.08
And now we're
gonna need some help."
00:12:17.11\00:12:19.82
They begin to
look around and say,
00:12:19.85\00:12:21.38
"Well, now wait, where is Jesus?
00:12:21.41\00:12:23.70
Where is Jesus at?"
00:12:23.73\00:12:25.82
You know the boat
began to fill with water.

If something didn't happens,
so they made every effort
00:12:27.85\00:12:30.21
that they knew
to save themselves.
00:12:30.24\00:12:31.95
You know people who
are familiar with boating
00:12:31.98\00:12:33.88
they have a lot of,
I used to call them,
00:12:33.91\00:12:35.28
tricks in order to
keep a boat going or so on,
00:12:35.31\00:12:37.93
so forth that
maybe you wouldn't have
00:12:37.96\00:12:39.40
but these men knew that all
and whether they were bailing
00:12:39.43\00:12:42.41
the water out and or
whatever they was doing,
00:12:42.44\00:12:44.36
throwing things off the
boat, they wanted to live.
00:12:44.39\00:12:47.06
The storm was bad.
00:12:47.09\00:12:48.46
And that's the way it is
in your life maybe today.
00:12:48.49\00:12:50.21
Storm is so bad, you don't know
whether you want to live or not.
00:12:50.24\00:12:53.02
You think, you
know, you're going to die.
00:12:53.05\00:12:55.88
And maybe you need to
be crying out right now,

oh, God save me.

And so the disciples,
they were doing everything

that they possibly
could, now listen this,

to save themselves.

You know how
hopeless that is today.

There are many
people in the world,

Christians, trying to
save themselves by works.

Doing all that they can
do to make sure they're safe

rather than to simply
give your life to Jesus

and be obedient to His commands.

There was no hope when man tries

to save himself
outside of Christ.

All of a sudden
they began to think,

Jesus is onboard. Wow.

If He didn't react
or something wasn't done

we are going to die.

I don't know if
you've ever been in such

straight place like that,
but I'm sure it's frightening.

Your life is on the line.

Jesus, where is He at?

After all when we
were there on the land,

Jesus said we need
to go to the other side.

Jesus said to them, number one,

launch out into the deep.

Do you remember that?

See, this is
wasn't the first time

Jesus had told the
disciples to launch out.

You are His
disciple, I am His disciple,

I believe I've heard
that voice say, launch out.
00:14:04.60\00:14:07.38
It wasn't just launch out,
it was launch out into the deep.
00:14:07.41\00:14:10.38
In Luke 5: 4 Jesus
had told the disciples,
00:14:10.41\00:14:14.84
you know, they
are looking for fish,
00:14:14.87\00:14:16.24
He said, launch
out into the deep.
00:14:16.27\00:14:18.62
See sometime we
launch out as Christian
00:14:18.65\00:14:20.21
but we only go so far.
00:14:20.24\00:14:21.66
We are afraid to
get away from shore.
00:14:21.69\00:14:23.69
Our faith is weak.
00:14:23.72\00:14:26.41
Jesus said to
launch into the deep means,
00:14:26.44\00:14:29.08
literally the word means,
to where it goes down deep.
00:14:29.11\00:14:33.35
He said wow, go
down deep, to push out.
00:14:33.38\00:14:36.98
So I got to think. I
said let's study this.

Let's look a little bit.

Jesus said launch
out into the deep.

He told His disciples
launch out into the deep,

so they were doing
what they were told to do.

Wouldn't Jesus
take care of them?

It's really beginning
to go through their mind,

I don't know.

What's wrong?

He's told us to do this
but when you launched out,

it's always this way.

The word has the
meaning, as you look,

also means you come back.

So the faith was I launch out

and by the grace
of God, we come back.

I like to think
of church services.

We come together to
get our spiritual batteries

all charged up. Don't we?

And then Jesus says to you,

when we leave
the sanctuary, what?

That's when the work begins.

We launch out into the deep.

We, what, attack as it
were by the grace of God,

the
impossibilities in this world,
00:15:20.41\00:15:23.01
all the demons of
hell fighting against,
00:15:23.04\00:15:25.10
but God said
launch out into the deep.
00:15:25.13\00:15:26.67
Give the message, then we come
back together to gain strength.

Launch out.
00:15:29.93\00:15:31.30
So Jesus had told them
00:15:31.33\00:15:32.70
so it gave them a
little bit of encouragement.

Push out, launch out.

And so at that
point they realized

Jesus was their only hope.

Oh, my friend, you realize today

that Jesus is
your only hope today.

There's no hope
outside of Jesus Christ.

The book of Acts 4:12, it says,

"Neither is there
salvation in any other," What?

There's no other
name given among men,

whereby we must be
saved than the name of Jesus."

Friend, I want you to
think about no other name

given among men,
whereby we must be save,

it's the name of Jesus.

There's people today
who are praying to idols

and they are praying,
maybe the priest or the pope

or a pastor or a
teacher, you know, Mary,

you know, dead
saints, is to no avail.
00:16:20.12\00:16:23.81
Only the name of Jesus,
00:16:23.84\00:16:26.21
there's no other--there's
no salvation outside of Christ.

And so the disciples
begin to think, we're helpless.

We're not going
to be able to escape.

You're helpless too
because we've all sinned

and come short
of the glory of God.

We are under the death decree.

You better believe it.

The disciples began to say
"Well, we're going to go down.

We're going to die
and there is one hope,"

and you have this
one hope today, too.

You can cry out Jesus.

The disciples
said, "Master, Master."

You ever been in
such a difficult situation

that you just don't
say "Master, Master?"

When you are in
need of something

you let the need
known, "Master, Master."

You know sometime we
say here in the ministries,

you know, they had
needs to get the gospel out.

Not just personal needs.

People say,
well, you ask for this

or you want help doing this.

Listen, it's God's work.

He said you had to make
your needs known and sometimes

we say we had needs.

God's calls has needs.

We are not thinking personal.

In the world today, many people
don't even recognize Jesus.

The demons
recognized who Jesus is,

because they've been beaten by
Him every time they confronted.

Jesus beat them every time.

And so we see the
demon-- and what they said,

"Oh, have mercy on us.

I besiege Thee,
don't torment us."

Jesus asked him, he
said, "What's your name?"

And they answered that we
are legion for we are many.

Remember a legion in the Roman
army was 23,000 and 5,000 men.

That's an awesome
thought, think about that.

The devil was using
these two men as mediums

in which to communicate
and do his dirty work.

This is what the enemy does.

He uses you till
there's nothing left to use up

and then he tries to

As those demons
came out they said,

the demons of hell
still had to ask Jesus,

when they got cast

They realized as they went
into the swine, what happened?

All the swine, the herd
that were on the mountain side,

you have the people
that watched over them,

but as demons went into
the herd, what happened?

They ran over the mountain side

this, the Jesus in His mercy

were watching over the swine.

that they need to be seeking Him

They sat at the feet of Jesus.

understood the devil had a plan.

Here's the plan of the enemy.

The enemy said, you know,
I am--'cause they asked Him,

"Can we go into the swine?"

Jesus said, "Yes, you can."

Because the herd of
swine ran over what,

the cliff and they were killed.

So what happened?
The owners lost the herd.

The enemy knew
that the owners probably

would be upset about it.

They lost their money

and then the devil knew that
Jesus would be blamed for it

because they've seen
this miracle take place.

Cast the demons out and
they went into the swine.

Number two, people would
not listen to Him anymore.

after this happen

the people is not gonna
listen to Jesus anymore,

so devil said, oh, this is good.

Destroy the swine, nobody is
gonna listen to Jesus anymore.

And the number three, they would
end up asking Jesus to leave.

They besought Him
that he should depart.

entreated Him, they ordered Him,

demons to go into the swine?

to go into the herd of swine,

Jesus knew they were unclean.

touch the swine's flesh.

the power of Jesus Christ.

beings but on animals.

to have knowledge of the enemy,

have to meet Him head on.

wanted the people to see

These demon possessed men,
