Thanks for staying with us for our final study 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.28 on the book of Hebrews. 00:00:03.31\00:00:04.41 James, we are in Chapter 13 of Hebrews 00:00:04.44\00:00:07.47 Now come to verse 10, wherein Paul says, 00:00:07.50\00:00:10.43 "we have an altar, from which those who serve the tabernacle 00:00:10.46\00:00:16.55 have no right to eat. " 00:00:16.58\00:00:18.54 What is this altar? 00:00:18.57\00:00:19.57 Paul is going back here to the terminology he has 00:00:19.60\00:00:22.34 been using through out the book of Hebrews. 00:00:22.37\00:00:23.76 And that is this transition from the earthly sanctuary 00:00:23.79\00:00:26.78 to the heavenly. 00:00:26.81\00:00:27.87 So here we have an altar that is referred to in the 00:00:27.90\00:00:31.24 context of this. 00:00:31.27\00:00:32.85 It's referring to the altar that was in the courtyard. 00:00:32.88\00:00:34.96 He says there at verse 11, "the bodies of those beasts, 00:00:34.99\00:00:37.81 whose blood is brought into the 00:00:37.84\00:00:39.16 sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned 00:00:39.34\00:00:40.75 without the camp, wherefore, verse 12, Jesus also 00:00:40.78\00:00:43.67 that He might also sanctify the people with His own blood, 00:00:43.70\00:00:46.16 suffered without the gate. " 00:00:46.19\00:00:47.24 This context tells us that it was not the altar, 00:00:47.27\00:00:49.96 that was in the Holy place right before the curtain 00:00:49.99\00:00:52.32 to the Most Holy Place. 00:00:52.35\00:00:53.71 That was the altar of incense. 00:00:53.74\00:00:54.71 The altar of incense. 00:00:54.72\00:00:55.69 This is the altar, that was in the courtyard when 00:00:55.70\00:00:58.05 the animals were brought for sacrificed. 00:00:58.08\00:00:59.97 And what Paul is doing he is saying, he hasn't really 00:01:00.00\00:01:02.49 spent a lot of time on this yet. 00:01:02.52\00:01:03.69 He's talked about the sanctuary, he's talked about the 00:01:03.72\00:01:06.26 service, he's talked about the mediation of Christ. 00:01:06.29\00:01:08.35 He is mentioned Christ has been sacrifice, but here he is 00:01:08.38\00:01:11.58 actually in symbolic language directing us to the 00:01:11.61\00:01:14.32 cross of Jesus Christ. 00:01:14.35\00:01:15.96 Amen! Amen! 00:01:15.99\00:01:16.96 And he is telling us before you go into the heavenly 00:01:16.97\00:01:18.75 sanctuary, before you go to the Holy of the Holiest place, 00:01:18.78\00:01:20.89 before you do any of that, you come to the altar. 00:01:20.92\00:01:23.29 You come to the cross. 00:01:23.32\00:01:24.55 We have an altar, God is calling us to that altar. 00:01:24.58\00:01:27.74 That altar is where Jesus Christ also that He might 00:01:27.77\00:01:32.10 sanctify us with His blood suffered. 00:01:32.13\00:01:34.50 That altar points to the cross that was the symbol 00:01:34.53\00:01:37.40 of the altar in the courtyard. 00:01:37.43\00:01:38.80 It is very important and appropriate that in the midst 00:01:38.83\00:01:41.69 of the these final moral instructions that we would, 00:01:41.72\00:01:45.58 in fact, encounter the cross of Christ. 00:01:45.61\00:01:48.19 Because moral instruction, apart from the grace of God, 00:01:48.22\00:01:52.11 manifested in Jesus, is just going to produce 00:01:52.14\00:01:54.74 frustration and failure and an anxiety in our souls. 00:01:54.77\00:01:58.66 Paul is going through and he said this is what we 00:01:58.69\00:02:01.12 need to do, you need to do that. 00:02:01.15\00:02:02.52 You need to love one another you need to honor marriage. 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.72 You need to do good deeds. 00:02:04.75\00:02:06.49 You need to take care of those who are mistreated and 00:02:06.52\00:02:08.91 don't be covetous. 00:02:08.94\00:02:10.09 And all of a sudden he says, now remember, make sure that 00:02:10.12\00:02:13.59 you keep your focus on the cross of Jesus. 00:02:13.62\00:02:17.88 And the blood of Jesus is what sanctifies us. 00:02:17.91\00:02:20.57 Now this is powerful because this is another ear mark. 00:02:20.60\00:02:22.64 This is another signature of Paul. 00:02:22.67\00:02:24.75 This is another reason why we know Paul is 00:02:24.78\00:02:26.77 the author of Hebrews. 00:02:26.80\00:02:27.77 Paul does this consistently in Ephesians, in Corinthians. 00:02:27.78\00:02:30.71 He consistently will begin with an emphasis on the cross, 00:02:30.74\00:02:33.87 he will begin with an emphasis on the love of God. 00:02:33.90\00:02:36.09 Then he will go through and begin to admonish the church, 00:02:36.12\00:02:39.19 rebuked them if necessary. 00:02:39.22\00:02:41.13 Then he will go back over and over again, consistently go back 00:02:41.16\00:02:44.98 to the cross, he will go back to the gospel, he will go back 00:02:45.01\00:02:48.62 to an emphasis on Jesus because he knows, 2 Corinthians 5:14, 00:02:48.66\00:02:52.24 It is the love of Christ that constrains us. 00:02:52.27\00:02:54.97 It is the love of Christ that energizes us to 00:02:55.00\00:02:58.03 live this fate. 00:02:58.06\00:02:59.35 Jesus was describing the cross and the experience 00:02:59.38\00:03:02.87 that He was going to endure there. 00:03:02.90\00:03:04.39 in John Chapter 12 verse 32, he said "and I, if I be lifted up 00:03:04.42\00:03:10.03 will draw all unto Me. " 00:03:10.06\00:03:12.36 The word draw is very interesting there. 00:03:12.39\00:03:14.34 Because all of this instruction that we are receiving 00:03:14.37\00:03:17.42 here in Hebrews 13, is really encouraging us to move on 00:03:17.45\00:03:22.25 to live in a Godly manner. 00:03:22.28\00:03:25.14 To live, He says, down in verse 18, to live honorably. 00:03:25.17\00:03:28.92 In this instruction to live honorably a high moral life 00:03:28.95\00:03:33.86 with a high moral standard. 00:03:33.89\00:03:35.59 Jesus informs us that when He is lifted up on the cross, 00:03:35.62\00:03:39.27 not only historically, but in preaching, in our own focus 00:03:39.30\00:03:42.79 when we study the Bible, when we are in communion with God. 00:03:42.82\00:03:46.08 As we maintain a focus on the uplifted cross, we are 00:03:46.11\00:03:50.68 deeply impressed with the love that God has for us, 00:03:50.71\00:03:54.78 and we are drawn, not pushed, not coerced, not manipulated, 00:03:54.81\00:03:58.55 but we are drawn to the Lord willingly. 00:03:58.58\00:04:02.24 Now this is really challenging for the Hebrew mindset. 00:04:02.27\00:04:05.13 Especially for those who may have been struggling 00:04:05.16\00:04:07.67 with going back to that system. 00:04:07.70\00:04:10.23 It is a lot easier, at times, not to exercise the faith 00:04:10.26\00:04:13.29 And to put our trust in things we can see and 00:04:13.32\00:04:16.29 things we can touch. 00:04:16.32\00:04:17.29 And obviously, there were a lot of Israelites, a lot of 00:04:17.30\00:04:19.62 the Jews, who struggled to exercise faith in Christ. 00:04:19.65\00:04:22.09 To give up the temple system, to give up the earthly system. 00:04:22.12\00:04:26.21 We have to remember, the book of Hebrews was likely 00:04:26.24\00:04:28.69 written before the temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. 00:04:28.72\00:04:31.66 So, what we have here, we have Paul, encouraging them 00:04:31.69\00:04:35.70 actually verse 13. 00:04:35.73\00:04:36.95 "Let us go forth, therefore unto Him, that was 00:04:36.98\00:04:39.98 without the camp. " 00:04:40.01\00:04:40.98 The context again, verse 10, "we have an altar whereof 00:04:40.99\00:04:44.39 they have no right to eat, which served the tabernacle. " 00:04:44.42\00:04:47.46 Today, God is calling us, many of us, to the same experience. 00:04:47.49\00:04:51.07 There may be tabernacles, temples, priestly ministries, 00:04:51.10\00:04:56.18 intercessions that are in harmony, not with the heavenly, 00:04:56.21\00:05:00.50 not with Christ mediation, but are counterfeits or 00:05:00.53\00:05:03.48 repeats of this earthly system. 00:05:03.51\00:05:06.34 God again, in the book of Hebrews, is calling us to the 00:05:06.37\00:05:09.99 inspiration of the writings of Paul, He is calling us 00:05:10.02\00:05:12.19 to let go, to leave those and go forth to Jesus Christ. 00:05:12.22\00:05:16.13 To go forth to the true Mediator, the true Priest, 00:05:16.16\00:05:19.94 the true Sacrifice, and that true Sanctuary in heaven, 00:05:19.97\00:05:23.65 so that we can partake of the grace. 00:05:23.68\00:05:26.02 James, don't you think it is interesting, that the book 00:05:26.05\00:05:28.76 of Hebrews has been leading us through an understanding 00:05:28.79\00:05:32.55 of the Christian experience, and the new covenant with a 00:05:32.58\00:05:35.25 strong emphasis on entering through the veil, 00:05:35.28\00:05:38.55 entering in through the veil into the immediate 00:05:38.58\00:05:42.88 presence of God, 00:05:42.91\00:05:43.88 come boldly before the throne of grace. 00:05:43.89\00:05:45.59 That is the Furthest most development 00:05:45.62\00:05:49.23 of Christian experience. 00:05:49.26\00:05:50.77 As we look at the sanctuary service, Paul leads 00:05:50.80\00:05:53.92 us all through this emphasis on going to the 00:05:53.95\00:05:57.60 Furthest degree of experience with Christ in the 00:05:57.63\00:06:01.42 Most Holy Place of the sanctuary. 00:06:01.45\00:06:03.66 Then when we come to the last chapter, he returns us 00:06:03.69\00:06:07.24 to the courtyard and the altar of sacrifice. 00:06:07.27\00:06:11.20 No matter where we are in our Christian experience, 00:06:11.23\00:06:14.03 we need to continually remember that we are utterly 00:06:14.06\00:06:17.87 dependent on Jesus Christ and Him crucified 00:06:17.90\00:06:22.13 for our salvation. 00:06:22.16\00:06:23.46 This is very much in harmony with the earthly Ty, 00:06:23.49\00:06:26.19 because even though that sacrifice was made in the 00:06:26.22\00:06:29.84 courtyard, the blood of the sacrifice, the merit of 00:06:29.87\00:06:32.76 that sacrifice was taken into the Holy Place, 00:06:32.79\00:06:34.74 and ultimately into the Most Holy Place. 00:06:34.77\00:06:37.36 So of course when we are in the Holy place, 00:06:37.39\00:06:39.71 and we see the blood on the curtain. 00:06:39.74\00:06:41.38 When we are in the Most Holy place and we see atonement, 00:06:41.41\00:06:43.54 the final atonement taken place there, we are reminded 00:06:43.57\00:06:45.84 that at atonement is made by the blood 00:06:45.87\00:06:48.10 that came from the altar. 00:06:48.13\00:06:49.44 That atonement is made by the blood that came from the 00:06:49.47\00:06:52.20 courtyard and so he naturally takes us back. 00:06:52.23\00:06:54.95 And of course, this is where we began. 00:06:54.98\00:06:56.40 His whole focus is to admonish the Hebrew believers, 00:06:56.43\00:07:00.69 Go forth, Go forth. 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.90 You have no right, if you're holding on to these earthly 00:07:02.93\00:07:05.81 types, go forth, you need to let go of those so you 00:07:05.84\00:07:09.36 can go forth and grasp the reality. 00:07:09.39\00:07:11.16 Lay hold upon the cross of Jesus Christ as your 00:07:11.19\00:07:13.68 only hope of salvation. 00:07:13.71\00:07:15.50 And there is no other way that we can possibly return 00:07:15.53\00:07:18.94 to God and enter into eternal fellowship with Him. 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.66 Jesus very clearly said in John 14, "I am the way, 00:07:21.69\00:07:24.73 the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father 00:07:24.76\00:07:28.32 except by or through Me. " 00:07:28.35\00:07:30.57 Jesus is the only access point back into fellowship with God. 00:07:30.60\00:07:35.10 This is a really powerful verse, verse 15 says. 00:07:35.13\00:07:37.86 "By Him, therefore, let us offer the sacrifice of praise 00:07:37.89\00:07:43.73 to God continually, that is the fruit of our lips giving 00:07:43.76\00:07:47.74 thanks to His name. " 00:07:47.77\00:07:48.97 Now this is interesting because if we are going forth, 00:07:49.00\00:07:50.59 like He is admonishing us to do, verse 14, "Let us therefore go 00:07:50.63\00:07:55.17 go forth unto Him, without the camp, bearing His reproach. 00:07:55.20\00:07:58.01 we have no continuing city we seek on forthcoming 00:07:58.04\00:08:01.28 If were going to do this, we're going to this by faith 00:08:01.31\00:08:04.07 and work going to do by faith in the sacrifice 00:08:04.10\00:08:06.39 that was made. 00:08:06.42\00:08:07.56 I'm sure that our viewers have heard this a number of times, 00:08:07.59\00:08:09.24 and our listeners, "Once and for All. " 00:08:09.27\00:08:12.29 So what's sacrifice now do we bring, if were going forth 00:08:12.32\00:08:15.77 to Christ and to the reality of all the shadows and types. 00:08:15.80\00:08:21.04 What sacrifice do we bring? 00:08:21.07\00:08:22.21 We certainly don't bring animal sacrifices. 00:08:22.24\00:08:24.33 We certainly do not bring Jesus, as the sacrifice 00:08:24.36\00:08:27.93 continually over and over again, as it is popular 00:08:27.96\00:08:30.68 in some religious persuasions of our world. 00:08:30.71\00:08:34.24 So what sacrifice do we bring? 00:08:34.27\00:08:35.77 Praise, thanksgiving. 00:08:35.80\00:08:37.56 Yes, if we embrace this. 00:08:37.59\00:08:39.07 If we embrace this incredible sacrifice that God has 00:08:39.10\00:08:41.99 given Himself for us. 00:08:42.02\00:08:43.62 If we recognize that we are perfect in Christ, 00:08:43.65\00:08:46.58 His has perfected those who obey Him. 00:08:46.61\00:08:49.25 We need to see that the only sacrifice that God requires 00:08:49.28\00:08:53.27 of us is this is the sacrifice of praise. 00:08:53.30\00:08:56.03 In verse 16, it says, "do not forget to do good, and to 00:08:56.06\00:09:00.16 share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased. " 00:09:00.19\00:09:04.63 So we have the sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving, 00:09:04.66\00:09:07.40 and now we have the sacrifices of doing good and sharing. 00:09:07.43\00:09:13.89 Sharing the Word of God, no doubt sharing of our resources 00:09:13.92\00:09:17.59 for the benefit of those who are in need. 00:09:17.62\00:09:19.88 God looks down upon this benevolence, and He is, 00:09:19.91\00:09:23.99 according to verse 16, well pleased. 00:09:24.02\00:09:26.86 I can't think of anything more gratifying than knowing 00:09:26.89\00:09:30.05 that I'm living in such a way as to bring pleasure to 00:09:30.08\00:09:33.86 the heart of God. 00:09:33.89\00:09:34.86 Yes, powerful this continual praise to God, combined 00:09:34.87\00:09:38.33 with these other sacrifices of doing good. 00:09:38.36\00:09:41.50 And in the end, we are pleasing God. 00:09:41.53\00:09:44.93 And I tell you, you know, I think it is possible for us to 00:09:44.96\00:09:47.93 make sacrifices, like giving our goods to the poor. 00:09:47.96\00:09:50.76 Even giving our lives for God, but this continual 00:09:50.79\00:09:55.27 sacrifice of praise to God, that's where I find myself 00:09:55.30\00:09:58.15 struggling at times. 00:09:58.18\00:09:59.96 Wondering, you know, how can I praise God in this 00:09:59.99\00:10:02.62 particular situation? 00:10:02.65\00:10:04.69 So, I know that this is the ultimate for us the ultimate 00:10:04.72\00:10:08.44 calling for us in Christ. 00:10:08.47\00:10:11.19 But it is only as it is saturated with a revelation of 00:10:11.22\00:10:14.80 what God has done for us, in His goodness and His grace, 00:10:14.83\00:10:17.64 that we can continue to bring forth this praise to God 00:10:17.67\00:10:20.93 with our lips. 00:10:20.96\00:10:21.93 Well, James lets move to Paul's concluding remarks in 00:10:21.95\00:10:25.65 verses 20 and 21, as he prepares 00:10:25.68\00:10:29.03 for his final salutation. 00:10:29.06\00:10:30.66 This is really great, because here he tells us now, 00:10:30.69\00:10:34.37 "May the God of peace, who brought up our Lord Jesus from 00:10:34.41\00:10:39.86 the dead, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of 00:10:39.90\00:10:44.25 the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good 00:10:44.29\00:10:48.58 work to do His will. 00:10:48.61\00:10:49.94 Working in you that, which is well pleasing in His 00:10:49.97\00:10:54.86 sight through Jesus Christ to whom be glory for 00:10:54.89\00:10:58.15 ever and ever Amen. " 00:10:58.18\00:11:00.87 And AMEN! 00:11:00.90\00:11:02.20 I love this and you know, here's this phrase you don't 00:11:02.23\00:11:04.45 find it very often. 00:11:04.48\00:11:05.60 In first 20 the everlasting covenant. 00:11:05.63\00:11:07.62 We are so inclined to do a new covenant, old covenant idea. 00:11:07.65\00:11:11.68 I mean, that's our mentality, and we don't realize that God's 00:11:11.71\00:11:15.17 testament, God's covenant has been everlasting. 00:11:15.20\00:11:17.26 That Hebrews points out that the faithful of past 00:11:17.29\00:11:21.77 generations embraced that covenant. 00:11:21.80\00:11:23.64 They embrace the new covenant in principle. 00:11:23.67\00:11:26.30 Therefore it is everlasting, covenant and we don't 00:11:26.33\00:11:29.01 understand also we need to be careful of this. 00:11:29.04\00:11:31.33 We don't understand that if we can actually embrace the old 00:11:31.36\00:11:35.27 covenant, and even though we're living on the side of the 00:11:35.30\00:11:38.26 cross, and it's easy for us to experience old covenant 00:11:38.29\00:11:40.62 relationships with God. 00:11:40.65\00:11:41.64 We want to embrace the everlasting covenant. 00:11:41.67\00:11:44.50 This was the covenant that was spoken to Abraham. 00:11:44.53\00:11:46.30 What makes it everlasting? 00:11:46.33\00:11:47.84 It came from God, was ratified by God, was ratified by the 00:11:47.87\00:11:51.31 blood of Jesus Christ, and is based upon God's Word. 00:11:51.34\00:11:54.91 upon His promises, His Oath to us is based not 00:11:54.94\00:11:58.39 upon what we can do. 00:11:58.42\00:11:59.55 Our promises to God, but His promises to us. 00:11:59.58\00:12:02.51 So Paul is reasoning here, in his close and he is 00:12:02.54\00:12:06.19 informing us that the same God, who raised Jesus up 00:12:06.22\00:12:10.14 from the dead, which was an incredibly 00:12:10.17\00:12:11.99 powerful act, bringing life back to a dead body. 00:12:12.02\00:12:16.22 The resurrection of Jesus Christ represents a power that 00:12:16.25\00:12:20.72 God wants to flow into our lives because he says the same 00:12:20.75\00:12:24.03 God who brought Jesus from the dead is going 00:12:24.06\00:12:27.29 to make you complete. 00:12:27.32\00:12:29.78 This God is going to work in you. 00:12:29.81\00:12:33.49 Work inside of you James, in your heart, in your life to 00:12:33.52\00:12:36.87 produce the fruit of righteousness. 00:12:36.90\00:12:39.55 That which is well pleasing in His sight. 00:12:39.58\00:12:41.69 I love this because you look at this and you realize, 00:12:41.72\00:12:44.44 How will I ever accomplish what God wants from me? 00:12:44.47\00:12:47.72 There is only one way, allow God to work 00:12:47.75\00:12:50.38 His will in your life. 00:12:50.41\00:12:51.92 Praise God! 00:12:51.95\00:12:53.14 It's been so great to study the book of Hebrews James. 00:12:53.17\00:12:55.42 It's gone so fast, it's gone too fast. 00:12:55.45\00:12:57.16 It's a rich, rich part of the Bible. 00:12:57.19\00:12:59.92 Over and over again we see these guiding themes of 00:12:59.95\00:13:03.53 Jesus being every thing superior to us. 00:13:03.56\00:13:07.30 We want to encourage our own hearts, and encourage those 00:13:07.33\00:13:10.22 who have been studying in the book of Hebrews with us, 00:13:10.25\00:13:12.58 to continue to focus their gaze upon Jesus. 00:13:12.61\00:13:16.52 To give their hearts over to Him. 00:13:16.55\00:13:18.43 To spend time contemplating His infinite 00:13:18.46\00:13:21.50 sacrifice in our behalf. 00:13:21.53\00:13:23.68 And in so doing, you will find friends, 00:13:23.71\00:13:26.11 as we are finding in our Christian journey, 00:13:26.14\00:13:28.28 that God will indeed strengthen you. 00:13:28.31\00:13:31.22 He will make you complete in Jesus Christ. 00:13:31.25\00:13:33.83 He will work in you that which is well pleasing. 00:13:33.86\00:13:37.22
