Hello friends and welcome back to our continuing study in 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.18 Hebrews chapter 12. 00:00:03.22\00:00:04.90 We are picking up here in verse 15. 00:00:04.93\00:00:07.42 What Paul does here Ty, is he is repeating one of the 00:00:07.46\00:00:10.96 same points that he brought out in the very 00:00:10.99\00:00:12.54 beginning of the book. 00:00:12.58\00:00:13.55 Looking to Jesus, but in the verse 15 after describing 00:00:13.56\00:00:17.39 that trials and tests will come to us and that God doesn't 00:00:17.42\00:00:21.34 bring them necessarily and overrules them for good, 00:00:21.38\00:00:24.46 because He loves us. 00:00:24.49\00:00:25.46 He says we need to look diligently lest any man fail 00:00:25.47\00:00:28.61 of the grace of God, and lest any root of bitterness 00:00:28.64\00:00:31.80 springing up, trouble us, and any be defiled, in other words 00:00:31.83\00:00:34.82 It is easy for us to lose sight of the fact that a loving 00:00:34.85\00:00:37.80 God is not the author of evil. 00:00:37.84\00:00:39.78 He did not intend for us to experience pain and suffering 00:00:39.81\00:00:43.03 and misery and death. 00:00:43.07\00:00:44.04 And to think that God is omnipotent and think that He 00:00:44.05\00:00:47.30 is the One that is in charge of all this chaos and evil 00:00:47.33\00:00:50.60 and darkness in this world. 00:00:50.63\00:00:51.61 We need to recognize that God is not the one that brings 00:00:51.64\00:00:54.87 pain and suffering. 00:00:54.91\00:00:55.98 Jesus said it this way that I have come that you may have 00:00:56.01\00:00:58.46 Life and life more abundantly. 00:00:58.49\00:01:00.54 The devil came to kill, steal, and destroy. 00:01:00.58\00:01:02.35 But God has come to give us life. 00:01:02.38\00:01:04.01 We're going to be inclined, in our human trials and 00:01:04.04\00:01:06.98 temptations, and the things that we go through James, 00:01:07.01\00:01:10.53 to hold other people accountable for the bad things that 00:01:10.57\00:01:14.05 happened to us. 00:01:14.09\00:01:15.11 We are going to be inclined to be angry, 00:01:15.15\00:01:17.36 we're going to be inclined to be resentful, and so Paul tells us 00:01:17.39\00:01:21.10 he says, Listen, I want you, verse 14, to pursue 00:01:21.13\00:01:24.25 peace with all people I want you to be at peace with all people 00:01:24.29\00:01:27.76 And then again in verse 15, he says, I don't want you to allow 00:01:27.79\00:01:31.22 a fruit of bitterness to spring up in your life. 00:01:31.26\00:01:33.64 We are inclined to hold other people accountable for the 00:01:33.67\00:01:38.52 things that happens to us. 00:01:38.56\00:01:39.73 Paul is saying, in a sense, let everybody off the hook. 00:01:39.77\00:01:43.57 God has related to you in such a way as to extend mercy 00:01:43.60\00:01:47.37 and compassion and forgiveness. 00:01:47.40\00:01:49.44 We need to live by the same rule of forgiveness. 00:01:49.47\00:01:53.58 We need to treat other people, even when they fail us, 00:01:53.62\00:01:57.03 the way that God has treated us through Jesus Christ, 00:01:57.07\00:02:00.45 by extending mercy and pardon. 00:02:00.48\00:02:02.49 That's why I like Romans 8:28, because it says we know that 00:02:02.52\00:02:06.16 all things work together for the good to them that love God, 00:02:06.20\00:02:09.13 to the call to those who are called to them that love God. 00:02:09.16\00:02:12.51 And I really liked that because it says not that we will be 00:02:12.54\00:02:16.55 immune from evil or the effects of sin, but that we will, that 00:02:16.58\00:02:20.55 God will work that for good, that He will bring good 00:02:20.59\00:02:23.06 out of that in our lives. 00:02:23.10\00:02:24.39 And the way that we can be sure not to allow this root of 00:02:24.43\00:02:28.51 bitterness, anger and resentment to well up in our lives, 00:02:28.54\00:02:32.33 and then defile and pollute our relationships and our 00:02:32.36\00:02:36.11 relationship with God. 00:02:36.14\00:02:37.26 It is to look diligently, to look carefully to Jesus. 00:02:37.30\00:02:41.37 As we focus our attention on the Savior, we will be far 00:02:41.40\00:02:45.43 less inclined to find fault in others and to allow 00:02:45.47\00:02:49.10 bitterness to arise in our lives against them. 00:02:49.14\00:02:52.74 Amen! Amen. 00:02:52.78\00:02:53.99 So where are we going to from here? 00:02:54.03\00:02:55.34 I think it's verse 18. 00:02:55.37\00:02:56.70 Verse 18, is making a shift here. 00:02:56.74\00:03:00.83 There is a new emphasis in this chapter now, because 00:03:00.87\00:03:05.35 Paul is telling us that we have a specific invitation 00:03:05.39\00:03:09.83 and admonition to come somewhere and it is 00:03:09.87\00:03:12.69 not somewhere else that he specifies. 00:03:12.73\00:03:14.93 Verse 18, he says for you have not come to the mountain, 00:03:14.96\00:03:19.96 that may be touched, that burned with fire to blackness, and 00:03:20.00\00:03:24.96 darkness and a tempest. 00:03:24.99\00:03:26.27 You have not come, in other words, to Mount Sinai. 00:03:26.31\00:03:28.84 Mount Sinai is what is being talked here where the people 00:03:28.87\00:03:31.81 heard the trumpet. 00:03:31.85\00:03:33.31 They saw the mountains shake. 00:03:33.35\00:03:34.91 They were surrounded with darkness. 00:03:34.95\00:03:37.61 There was lightning, the people trembled. 00:03:37.64\00:03:40.83 The Apostle Paul informs us that they became afraid, and 00:03:40.87\00:03:45.18 they begged Moses, not to allow any more words from God 00:03:45.22\00:03:49.49 to be spoken to them. 00:03:49.53\00:03:51.39 And in that fear, and in that trembling they were 00:03:51.42\00:03:55.13 inclined to turn from God, but now Paul is saying no 00:03:55.16\00:03:58.83 that's not the experience God is calling us to. 00:03:58.86\00:04:01.28 He is not calling us to an experience of trembling and 00:04:01.32\00:04:04.77 pulling back from God, but he is actually calling us to 00:04:04.80\00:04:08.22 draw close to the Lord. 00:04:08.26\00:04:09.54 In verse 22. 00:04:09.57\00:04:11.45 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living 00:04:11.49\00:04:15.86 God, to the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable 00:04:15.89\00:04:19.18 company of angels, to the general assembly of the Church 00:04:19.21\00:04:22.73 of the firstborn, who are registered in heaven to God. 00:04:22.76\00:04:26.30 The Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect 00:04:26.34\00:04:30.77 and to who Jesus, the Mediator of the better covenant, 00:04:30.81\00:04:35.20 and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better 00:04:35.24\00:04:38.10 things than that of Abel. 00:04:38.13\00:04:39.50 This is so powerful, because what basically Paul is saying 00:04:39.54\00:04:43.02 in the context of everything we have reading is this, God's 00:04:43.05\00:04:45.94 people, in the Old Testament times, were scared to death 00:04:45.97\00:04:48.83 to approach God, to approach His presence, 00:04:48.86\00:04:51.86 to be in His presence. 00:04:51.89\00:04:52.86 But now that we have seen Jesus, 00:04:52.87\00:04:54.66 the forerunner, who has gone before. 00:04:54.69\00:04:56.48 Now that we have understood the essence of salvation, 00:04:56.51\00:04:59.21 the gospel that covenant, the better things. 00:04:59.25\00:05:01.55 We can come. 00:05:01.59\00:05:02.80 Jesus has gone before there is a general assembly 00:05:02.83\00:05:05.72 in the church there. 00:05:05.76\00:05:06.78 There are those whose names are written there. 00:05:06.82\00:05:09.57 There are, there is a Mediator there. 00:05:09.60\00:05:11.98 There is a heavenly host there. 00:05:12.01\00:05:13.98 There is no reason for us to be afraid to go there. 00:05:14.02\00:05:16.53 God is approachable. 00:05:16.56\00:05:17.85 We can approach Him. 00:05:17.88\00:05:19.10 We can be and His presence we don't need to fear. 00:05:19.13\00:05:21.60 So, he says in verse 25, See that you do not 00:05:21.64\00:05:25.28 refuse Him who speaks. 00:05:25.32\00:05:27.92 Which is again one of the themes in a different way. 00:05:27.96\00:05:31.42 Paul brings up over and over again, in the book 00:05:31.46\00:05:33.81 of the Hebrews, don't refuse don't draw back. 00:05:33.85\00:05:36.68 Its just a continual encouragement, a prodding, 00:05:36.71\00:05:39.48 come on, we're moving on, we're coming closer and closer to God. 00:05:39.51\00:05:42.91 Draw near to Him, He's friendly, He's full of Grace. 00:05:42.95\00:05:46.74 Mercy to forgive, grace to help in time of need. 00:05:46.77\00:05:50.52 Have confidence move forward. 00:05:50.56\00:05:52.05 Don't turn away. 00:05:52.08\00:05:53.05 It goes on and says, don't refuse Him. 00:05:53.08\00:05:54.82 Don't turn away from Him, that speaks from heaven. 00:05:54.85\00:05:57.73 In other words, don't reject Him. 00:05:57.76\00:05:59.42 He is seeking to court us. 00:05:59.46\00:06:01.16 He is seeking to draw us to Him. 00:06:01.19\00:06:02.59 Don't refuse these overtures because we recognize that 00:06:02.62\00:06:05.78 if we are left to ourselves and we are left to face 00:06:05.81\00:06:08.90 the record of our lives, if we're left to bear our guilt, 00:06:08.94\00:06:11.75 of our sin, we're going to be overwhelmed. 00:06:11.79\00:06:14.30 God wants to take care of that so that we can 00:06:14.34\00:06:16.97 have complete record taking care of and we can 00:06:17.00\00:06:19.60 stand boldly before His throne. 00:06:19.63\00:06:20.87 Another great thing, that is brought to our attention 00:06:20.91\00:06:23.26 here is that we have a destiny that is brought 00:06:23.29\00:06:26.78 to view here. 00:06:26.81\00:06:27.78 That involves fellowship James, if we can imagine this. 00:06:27.79\00:06:30.97 It involves fellowship with the Angels, and innumerable 00:06:31.00\00:06:34.31 company of Angels. 00:06:34.35\00:06:35.49 So far the book of Hebrews has informed us that occasionally 00:06:35.52\00:06:38.94 we entertain angels unaware. 00:06:38.98\00:06:41.21 I mean, we have encounters with angels, because they 00:06:41.24\00:06:44.40 are sent forth to minister to those who shall be 00:06:44.44\00:06:47.56 heirs of salvation. 00:06:47.60\00:06:48.57 Paul says but we're not in an experience right now, 00:06:48.59\00:06:52.16 where we actually have face to face personal 00:06:52.19\00:06:55.71 fellowship with angels. 00:06:55.74\00:06:56.98 But this is something really to look forward to. 00:06:57.01\00:06:59.16 Can you imagine that in eternity future that we are going to 00:06:59.19\00:07:03.43 actually enter into friendships, and conversations 00:07:03.46\00:07:08.16 with angelic beings who will be a part of our 00:07:08.20\00:07:11.93 experience in the future. 00:07:11.96\00:07:12.93 It's just amazing. 00:07:12.95\00:07:13.92 And also we are going to meet those angels that 00:07:13.93\00:07:16.36 were probably working in our lives. 00:07:16.40\00:07:18.74 Helping us, guiding us, protecting us, when we 00:07:18.77\00:07:21.49 didn't even know about it. 00:07:21.52\00:07:22.49 And they are going to share with us the experiences 00:07:22.50\00:07:24.02 they had with us. 00:07:24.06\00:07:25.14 And how difficult it may have been at times for them to 00:07:25.18\00:07:28.41 do the task that God He had assigned to them 00:07:28.45\00:07:31.79 in watching over us, or directing us in the 00:07:31.82\00:07:35.12 way that He wanted us to go. 00:07:35.16\00:07:36.51 Jesus actually indicates, I just wanted to bring this up. 00:07:36.54\00:07:39.82 It just came to mind. 00:07:39.85\00:07:40.99 Jesus indicated in Matthew chapter 18 James, that 00:07:41.02\00:07:44.34 when a child is born into the world that a 00:07:44.38\00:07:48.09 child is actually assigned a guardian angel. 00:07:48.13\00:07:51.77 Because, he warned people who hurt children, he said. 00:07:51.80\00:07:55.07 Don't hurt little children, it would be better for 00:07:55.11\00:07:58.15 you to have a large rock tied around your neck and 00:07:58.18\00:08:01.19 be thrown into the depths of the sea. 00:08:01.22\00:08:03.01 Because they are angels, these children's angels, 00:08:03.05\00:08:07.08 do always behold the face of their father in heaven. 00:08:07.11\00:08:11.83 So we see here that children are attended by angelic 00:08:11.87\00:08:16.56 companions, who are there to watch over them. 00:08:16.59\00:08:19.42 To protect them. 00:08:19.45\00:08:20.53 We grow up, and no doubt these angels follow us 00:08:20.56\00:08:23.45 through our lives. 00:08:23.48\00:08:24.45 I can't wait to finally meet my own guardian angel, 00:08:24.46\00:08:28.85 who knows everything about me. 00:08:28.88\00:08:30.27 He's been with me through life, to meet my own 00:08:30.30\00:08:31.99 guardian angel face to face. 00:08:32.03\00:08:33.52 To learn his name. I mean, they have names. 00:08:33.55\00:08:35.47 The Bible says that there is an angel whose name is 00:08:35.50\00:08:38.68 Gabriel, we have no reason to suppose that each 00:08:38.71\00:08:41.85 of the angelic host don't have names. 00:08:41.89\00:08:44.02 They each one has a personal history. 00:08:44.06\00:08:46.12 Each of these angels encountered the fall of Lucifer. 00:08:46.15\00:08:49.80 And these holy angels endured through that great 00:08:49.84\00:08:53.81 rebellion and had remained faithful to God. 00:08:53.85\00:08:56.30 They'll have a testimony to share with us. 00:08:56.33\00:08:58.74 We'll have things to share with them. 00:08:58.78\00:09:01.24 It is just going to be incredible fellowship. 00:09:01.28\00:09:02.94 So we wherefore Paul says in verse 28. 00:09:02.97\00:09:05.66 We've received a kingdom which cannot be moved. 00:09:05.69\00:09:08.61 There is the immutable, immovable, presence of God. 00:09:08.64\00:09:11.78 Let us have grace whereby we may serve God acceptably. 00:09:11.82\00:09:14.53 Because there is no way we can serve God acceptably 00:09:14.57\00:09:17.60 if we don't have grace with reference and Godly fear. 00:09:17.64\00:09:20.64 Why, for our God is, a consuming fire. 00:09:20.67\00:09:24.30 Now, what does that mean? 00:09:24.34\00:09:25.83 Our God is a consuming fire. 00:09:25.86\00:09:27.29 Well first of all, it's interesting that we have an 00:09:27.32\00:09:31.15 invitation here, but it is ominous invitation, 00:09:31.19\00:09:34.18 because Paul is saying from verse 18 onward 00:09:34.22\00:09:37.15 He's saying come to the Lord, come to Mount Zion, 00:09:37.18\00:09:40.89 Our God is a consuming fire. 00:09:40.93\00:09:43.88 I mean that doesn't seem inviting first glance. 00:09:43.91\00:09:47.13 Why would I want to come into the presence of a God 00:09:47.17\00:09:50.35 Who is described as a consuming fire? 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.66 But throughout Scripture, we encounter this idea of fire. 00:09:53.69\00:09:57.45 It is interesting because for example in Daniel 00:09:57.49\00:10:00.26 Chapter 7, verses 9 and 10. 00:10:00.30\00:10:03.87 We are told that God is surrounded by fire and 00:10:03.90\00:10:08.04 a river of fire, a stream of fire issues 00:10:08.08\00:10:10.93 forth from before Him. 00:10:10.96\00:10:12.30 And then it says in His presence, in the presence 00:10:12.34\00:10:15.73 of that fire, He is surrounded with 10,000 00:10:15.76\00:10:19.37 times 10,000 Angels. 00:10:19.41\00:10:21.91 Somehow these Angels are in God's presence, 00:10:21.95\00:10:24.84 surrounded with this fire, and they're not 00:10:24.88\00:10:27.74 consumed in the fire. 00:10:27.77\00:10:29.49 They are praising God, they are ministering in God's presence 00:10:29.53\00:10:33.58 and not being destroyed by this consuming fire. 00:10:33.62\00:10:37.64 So what is going to be destroyed by the consuming fire? 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.14 You know, all through the Bible, especially 00:10:40.18\00:10:42.30 the New Testament, we find that rebellion, 00:10:42.33\00:10:44.38 that sin, that which is out of harmony with Heaven, 00:10:44.42\00:10:47.08 and out of harmony with love is the element that 00:10:47.11\00:10:49.50 is going to be destroyed in the consuming fire. 00:10:49.53\00:10:52.22 In other words, those who stand in the consuming 00:10:52.25\00:10:55.29 fire have separated from sin, or have allowed 00:10:55.33\00:10:58.33 Christ to separate sin from their lives. 00:10:58.37\00:11:00.60 We can stand in that consuming fire, without that 00:11:00.64\00:11:03.82 fire consuming us when we allow Christ 00:11:03.85\00:11:06.41 to be our righteousness. 00:11:06.45\00:11:07.92 And when we accept His gift of salvation and allow 00:11:07.95\00:11:11.24 sin to be separated from our hearts. 00:11:11.28\00:11:13.75 There are a number of verses in the Bible that 00:11:13.78\00:11:16.91 fill out and kind of develop what's involved in this fire. 00:11:16.94\00:11:21.20 One of them, I think of is in the Song of Solomon Chapter 8. 00:11:21.23\00:11:25.45 In which the Shulamite woman, who is speaking back 00:11:25.48\00:11:31.27 to Solomon, her beloved. 00:11:31.30\00:11:32.55 She says, set me as a seal upon your heart, 00:11:32.58\00:11:35.24 a seal upon your arm, for love is as strong 00:11:38.37\00:11:40.09 as death and jealousy is as cruel as the grave. 00:11:40.12\00:11:42.34 And then it says, something very interesting James. 00:11:42.37\00:11:46.13 It says, the flames of love can not be quenched, 00:11:46.16\00:11:49.92 and it is like the very flames of Yahweh Himself. 00:11:49.95\00:11:53.67 God's love is associated with fire. 00:11:53.71\00:11:56.38 Also in Scripture God's glory is associated with fire. 00:11:56.41\00:12:00.85 And in the Old Testament it talks about how 00:12:00.88\00:12:03.20 those who stand in the consuming fire. 00:12:03.23\00:12:05.48 Those who have allowed God to cleanse them from that sin. 00:12:05.52\00:12:08.71 You know, God is going to cleanse the earth. 00:12:08.75\00:12:10.75 I mean the Bible is very clear II Peter tells us. 00:12:10.79\00:12:13.29 Revelation tells us that God is going to cleanse the earth. 00:12:13.33\00:12:16.16 He Himself is going to be the One that consumes sin 00:12:16.19\00:12:18.75 and every vestige of sin upon this earth. 00:12:18.79\00:12:20.65 His presence and love consumes sin. 00:12:20.68\00:12:22.66 But those can stand in the consuming fire of 00:12:22.69\00:12:25.47 His presence are those who have allowed themselves 00:12:25.50\00:12:28.07 to be divested of that sin through the grace of Christ. 00:12:28.10\00:12:30.92 They become partakers of the glory of God. 00:12:30.96\00:12:34.47 Of character of God. 00:12:34.51\00:12:35.97 So instead of this infinite contrast of guilt and pain 00:12:36.01\00:12:39.56 and self incrimination, they come into the presence of God 00:12:39.60\00:12:43.12 and find themselves perfectly at home for eternity 00:12:43.16\00:12:46.11 in a consuming fire of God's love. 00:12:46.14\00:12:48.38 That's why Paul says in 13, verse 1, 00:12:48.42\00:12:50.59 let brotherly love continue Friends we want you to let 00:12:50.62\00:12:53.88 brotherly love continue, to work in you, 00:12:53.91\00:12:55.98 to consume sin in you now so that you can stand 00:12:56.01\00:12:58.66 in God's presence then. 00:12:58.69\00:13:00.10
