Hello friends, I am your co-host James Rafferty with Ty Gibson 00:00:21.36\00:00:24.33 and this is Books Of the Book. 00:00:24.36\00:00:26.77 We are in Hebrews Chapter 12, and we want to invite you to 00:00:26.80\00:00:30.55 open your Bible and have a listening ear and join us in 00:00:30.58\00:00:34.29 Hebrews Chapter 12. 00:00:34.33\00:00:35.35 Hebrews chapter 12, like many of the chapters in Hebrews 00:00:35.39\00:00:39.11 James, begins with the word therefore, 00:00:39.14\00:00:42.47 so we need some context. 00:00:42.51\00:00:43.69 What we are about to launch into in Chapter 12, is referring 00:00:43.73\00:00:48.13 back for its context to chapter 11. 00:00:48.16\00:00:51.19 We have a whole list of individuals who have 00:00:51.22\00:00:54.40 been mentioned, who's faith accomplished 00:00:54.43\00:00:57.82 great exploits and now, having concluded 00:00:57.86\00:01:01.21 that list we come to chapter 12. 00:01:01.25\00:01:03.14 Paul says therefore, we also since we are surrounded by so 00:01:03.17\00:01:07.68 great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and 00:01:07.72\00:01:12.20 sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance 00:01:12.23\00:01:16.84 the race that is set before us. 00:01:16.88\00:01:18.77 Looking unto Jesus, now I really like this, because this is 00:01:18.81\00:01:22.31 pointing out TY, it there is a besetting sin. 00:01:22.35\00:01:24.45 All of us have sins, all of us have weaknesses, 00:01:24.49\00:01:26.52 all of us have problems that we are dealing with in our walk 00:01:26.56\00:01:31.28 in our Christian experience. 00:01:31.31\00:01:32.87 But there is a besetting sin, I believe, of human nature, 00:01:32.91\00:01:36.26 now this besetting sin began 00:01:36.29\00:01:38.44 right at the very inception right at the very fall, 00:01:38.47\00:01:41.26 right at the very beginning, and that besetting sin, 00:01:41.30\00:01:44.02 I believe, is the inclination that we have to find fault to 00:01:44.05\00:01:48.21 look at our failures and our imperfections, either 00:01:48.25\00:01:51.20 in others or in ourselves. 00:01:51.24\00:01:52.74 You know when Adam was confronted by God with partaking 00:01:52.78\00:01:55.76 of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he pointed to Eve. 00:01:55.79\00:01:58.42 and Eve pointed to the serpent, and we have been 00:01:58.46\00:02:00.45 pointing ever since. 00:02:00.49\00:02:01.46 Paul is saying here, you are surrounded with a great cloud of 00:02:01.47\00:02:04.89 witnesses, you know, the only way that we can overcome this 00:02:04.92\00:02:08.32 besetting sin of finding fault is by recognizing God's 00:02:08.36\00:02:12.80 perspective on our lives. 00:02:12.84\00:02:15.14 All of the witnesses of Hebrews 11 have one thing in common. 00:02:15.17\00:02:20.83 The record of their lives is minus any failure any sin any 00:02:20.86\00:02:25.85 record of where they came short of God's glory. 00:02:25.88\00:02:29.65 Have you noticed that? Well yeah! 00:02:29.68\00:02:30.90 The chapter just gives a glowing report about each one of them 00:02:30.93\00:02:34.43 and there is no mention of any of their failures which we have 00:02:34.47\00:02:37.93 in the biblical record. 00:02:37.97\00:02:38.94 I mean, we know that these were human beings who 00:02:38.95\00:02:41.37 were weak and faltering. 00:02:41.41\00:02:42.38 Noah built an ark, but he also got drunk. 00:02:42.39\00:02:44.89 Abraham and Sarah were faithful, but he lied about his wife. 00:02:44.92\00:02:48.95 Sarah, she laughed about the idea of having a child. 00:02:48.98\00:02:51.17 Moses he fled Egypt, but he also killed an Egyptian. 00:02:51.21\00:02:53.36 Smote the rock of impatience. 00:02:53.39\00:02:55.29 They are not mentioned there. 00:02:55.32\00:02:57.15 We're surrounded with witnesses, who from God perspective, 00:02:57.18\00:03:00.96 are seen perfect and complete in Jesus Christ by faith. 00:03:00.99\00:03:04.46 We also have need of this prospective and see people 00:03:04.50\00:03:07.93 as they are in Jesus, lay aside the inclination 00:03:07.97\00:03:10.60 we have to judge, criticize and condemn others. 00:03:10.63\00:03:13.20 One of the great truths of the gospel is that love covers a 00:03:13.23\00:03:18.35 multitude of sin. 00:03:18.38\00:03:19.56 That doesn't mean that love becomes deceived, I mean, God 00:03:19.59\00:03:23.39 knows our failures. 00:03:23.43\00:03:24.97 He sees those things in us that are out of harmony with His 00:03:25.00\00:03:28.86 will and are contrary to His love. 00:03:28.89\00:03:30.67 But God looks upon us and exercises confidence He instills 00:03:30.70\00:03:36.61 faith in us by exercising faith. 00:03:36.65\00:03:39.80 Yes, you know, it's interesting because Paul and first 39 of 11 00:03:39.84\00:03:43.80 is calling us to the better thing, the better experience 00:03:43.84\00:03:47.52 something better the essence then of what Paul is saying is 00:03:47.55\00:03:51.19 keep positive keep to the affirmative. 00:03:51.23\00:03:53.76 Jesus does not dwell upon our sins upon our failures. 00:03:53.79\00:03:56.79 So why should we? Amen! Amen! 00:03:56.83\00:03:59.95 I want to connect to verses 1 and 2 now James, 00:03:59.99\00:04:02.74 because we have this cloud of witnesses the faithful of 00:04:02.77\00:04:06.77 all ages that are delineated in chapter 11 and 00:04:06.80\00:04:09.95 then in the light of their faith, we are encouraged to lay 00:04:09.98\00:04:13.65 aside sin to run the race that is set before us with 00:04:13.69\00:04:16.85 endurance, but at the end of verse 1 there is a comma, it's 00:04:16.88\00:04:20.41 not the end of his thought. 00:04:20.44\00:04:21.78 He's not saying hey, you need to overcome sin. 00:04:21.81\00:04:24.86 You need to run this race, he's not imposing 00:04:24.89\00:04:27.90 responsibility in a vacuum here. 00:04:27.94\00:04:30.59 He's saying to us, run this race 00:04:30.63\00:04:33.21 lay aside your sin, looking unto Jesus the author and 00:04:33.25\00:04:39.88 finisher of our faith. 00:04:39.92\00:04:41.53 In other words, the means by which the 00:04:41.57\00:04:44.43 way in which we lay aside sin and run this race with endurance 00:04:44.46\00:04:49.05 is by looking to Jesus. 00:04:49.08\00:04:51.29 I really like this verse, I really like this context. 00:04:51.32\00:04:53.80 Basically what we are saying here is not only 00:04:53.84\00:04:56.36 do we need to keep positive, 00:04:56.39\00:04:57.92 not only do we need to keep our positive focus, but we also 00:04:57.95\00:05:01.67 need to keep our focus on Jesus not on man. 00:05:01.70\00:05:05.04 You see with Christ, we will not grow weary. 00:05:05.08\00:05:08.38 We will not faint. 00:05:08.41\00:05:09.38 When we focus on men will refocus on ourselves. 00:05:09.39\00:05:11.68 We were going to grow weary, we are going to feel overwhelmed. 00:05:11.72\00:05:14.99 But when we keep our focus on Christ who is the author and the 00:05:15.03\00:05:18.39 finisher of our faith, were going to find He will finish the 00:05:18.42\00:05:21.75 work He has begun in us 00:05:21.79\00:05:22.82 This is amazing that it said He has authored our faith. 00:05:22.86\00:05:27.07 Now we know an author is someone who writes a book. 00:05:27.11\00:05:31.28 Someone who originate something so Jesus is the 00:05:31.31\00:05:35.45 originator of our faith. 00:05:35.48\00:05:38.09 He is the one who has produced it, He's the One who's worked 00:05:38.12\00:05:41.66 it out in His own human experience as our 00:05:41.70\00:05:44.44 representative and having authored that faith then 00:05:44.48\00:05:47.90 The apostle Paul says He finished, He originated it, 00:05:47.94\00:05:51.33 and He finished our faith. 00:05:51.37\00:05:54.32 Now that's vital. 00:05:54.36\00:05:55.33 Because many times we think Jesus started it, but He is 00:05:55.34\00:05:57.56 asking us to finish He begun it. 00:05:57.59\00:05:59.64 but we have to do the rest NO! Hebrews is telling us very 00:05:59.68\00:06:02.91 clearly He began it and He will finish it. 00:06:02.95\00:06:05.58 And that is very encouraging. 00:06:05.62\00:06:06.84 So He has authored our faith. 00:06:06.88\00:06:08.03 He has originated and He has finished our faith 00:06:08.07\00:06:11.82 so at that point, some one may be thinking, 00:06:11.86\00:06:15.54 I've wondered at times, if He authored it if, He finished it, 00:06:15.58\00:06:19.98 is there anything at all involved in my own experience. 00:06:20.02\00:06:23.98 Well, there is the faith that He's authored and finished 00:06:24.02\00:06:27.95 is a living vibrant faith. 00:06:27.99\00:06:29.99 That is clearly referring back to the experience of all these 00:06:30.02\00:06:34.12 faithful who we noticed in our previous time together, who 00:06:34.16\00:06:37.62 when they had faith, when they experienced faith, they 00:06:37.65\00:06:41.08 accomplished great things by that faith. 00:06:41.11\00:06:43.71 Faith is active, it's aggressive, it moves it, 00:06:43.75\00:06:46.68 it accomplishes things, faith without works is dead. 00:06:46.71\00:06:50.38 Be it alone as a very context of Hebrews 12 is tell us lay 00:06:50.41\00:06:54.06 aside every weight that sin does so easily beset us look to 00:06:54.10\00:06:57.93 Jesus consider Him that endured such contradiction of sin 00:06:57.96\00:07:01.76 against himself, lest you be wary faint 00:07:01.79\00:07:04.35 in your mind verse four. 00:07:04.39\00:07:05.36 You have not yet resisted unto blood striving against sin. 00:07:05.37\00:07:10.31 So there is this active faith. 00:07:10.35\00:07:12.46 Faith that is motivated by love that strives against sin. 00:07:12.49\00:07:16.37 that resists unto blood. 00:07:16.41\00:07:18.15 Now in this context, we might want to point back to the 00:07:18.18\00:07:21.34 experience of Jesus in Gethsemane because frankly, 00:07:21.38\00:07:24.10 there is nowhere in the Bible that I find where anyone 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.82 ever resisted unto blood striving against sin, 00:07:26.86\00:07:29.26 but Christ, and I think that 00:07:29.29\00:07:31.09 Paul here is speaking metaphorically, 00:07:31.13\00:07:33.68 in a very real sense of an experience he wants us to have. 00:07:33.71\00:07:37.46 When you look at Matthew Chapter 26, 00:07:37.50\00:07:40.20 you look at the experience that Christ had as He 00:07:40.24\00:07:42.37 entered Gethsemane you see an outline of the way in which we 00:07:42.41\00:07:46.01 can strive, we can resist sin. 00:07:46.05\00:07:48.34 There are basically about eight points here that you can 00:07:48.38\00:07:51.44 consider that I would like to go through very quickly. 00:07:51.47\00:07:53.24 They are powerful, because what you have here is you have 00:07:53.27\00:07:56.65 Jesus Christ seeking to maintain His connection 00:07:56.69\00:07:59.61 with the Father. 00:07:59.64\00:08:00.61 What does He do, first of all, He sings a hymn. 00:08:00.62\00:08:02.75 We are admonished in the new testament to sing hymns and 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.53 spiritual songs. 00:08:05.56\00:08:06.53 Then as He goes out with His disciples. 00:08:06.54\00:08:08.34 He preaches the word He shares with them prophecies about 00:08:08.38\00:08:11.98 what's going to happen to Himself. 00:08:12.02\00:08:12.99 So He places His faith in the word. 00:08:13.00\00:08:14.51 Then He asks His disciples to pray for Him. 00:08:14.54\00:08:17.78 And then He Himself seeks help from the Father. 00:08:17.82\00:08:20.99 He goes off and He prays as He asked disciples to 00:08:21.03\00:08:23.90 pray for Him. 00:08:23.93\00:08:24.90 And then finally He confesses His unwillingness to go in the 00:08:24.91\00:08:28.07 direction that God wants Him to go but He says not my will, 00:08:28.11\00:08:31.38 though, but thine be done. 00:08:31.42\00:08:32.42 In this agony of separation He submits 00:08:32.46\00:08:36.66 His will to the Father He says. 00:08:36.70\00:08:38.24 You know My will wants to in this direction, but I submit 00:08:38.27\00:08:40.83 My will to you Father, and He prays that three times. 00:08:40.87\00:08:43.39 I believe that Jesus is outlining for us, 00:08:43.43\00:08:46.25 as Paul points to resisting in the blood. 00:08:46.28\00:08:49.03 Jesus is outlined for us what He would ask us to do, to have 00:08:49.07\00:08:52.70 hope to sing, to trust in the word of God. 00:08:52.74\00:08:55.41 To pray and have others pray for us. 00:08:55.44\00:08:56.96 And finally to submit our will and our way to God's will, 00:08:56.99\00:09:00.49 and God's way and to commit ourselves to Him. 00:09:00.53\00:09:02.62 We look to Jesus as Hebrews Chapter 12, Verse 1 and 2 00:09:02.66\00:09:08.35 It admonishes us to do. 00:09:08.38\00:09:09.61 We see in incredible things for example, Paul says here and 00:09:09.64\00:09:13.42 verse 2, that when we look to Jesus, one of the things we 00:09:13.46\00:09:17.24 are going to see James, is that He authored our faith. 00:09:17.27\00:09:20.87 He finished our faith for the joy that was set before Him. 00:09:20.91\00:09:24.48 He endured the cross. 00:09:24.51\00:09:25.48 The joy that was set before Him. 00:09:25.49\00:09:27.38 I think wow, what is it that Jesus is looking forward to as 00:09:27.41\00:09:32.68 the joy that will be the result of His sacrifice, and I am 00:09:32.71\00:09:37.38 reminded of His prayer in John 17 where He expressed what His 00:09:37.41\00:09:42.04 desire was and what He was looking forward to Himself 00:09:42.08\00:09:44.62 after His sacrifice. 00:09:44.66\00:09:45.96 In Chapter 17 of the Gospel of John and verse 24, He says 00:09:46.00\00:09:50.63 Father, I desire that they also whom You have given Me 00:09:50.67\00:09:55.23 may be with Me where I am that they may behold My glory, which 00:09:55.26\00:10:00.17 You have given Me for You loved Me before the foundation 00:10:00.20\00:10:05.07 of the world. 00:10:05.10\00:10:06.07 So, Jesus basically says, here I am going to endure the cross. 00:10:06.11\00:10:09.73 I'm going to move straight through with this infinite self- 00:10:09.77\00:10:13.25 sacrifice and endure this pain and suffering because I am 00:10:13.29\00:10:16.73 looking forward to eternity future living in fellowship 00:10:16.77\00:10:22.88 with my sons and daughters, with those who have 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.81 been redeemed by life virtue of this sacrifice. 00:10:25.84\00:10:28.66 He is looking forward with joy to spending eternity with us. 00:10:28.70\00:10:32.03 Amen! and you know, it's interesting because as you move 00:10:32.07\00:10:35.45 through this Ty, you have in verse five and onward, you have 00:10:35.49\00:10:38.84 this exhortation to not forget that God educates 00:10:38.87\00:10:45.39 us through trial. 00:10:45.43\00:10:46.54 Now there are times when it becomes difficult for us to 00:10:46.58\00:10:49.81 accept and understand that when we are tested, 00:10:49.84\00:10:53.63 when we're tried, when we, as the old King James say, 00:10:53.67\00:10:56.65 are chastened by the Lord that 00:10:56.68\00:10:58.74 we tend to chide under it and think, 00:10:58.78\00:11:01.42 Oh, you know, have I done something wrong? 00:11:01.45\00:11:04.02 Does God not like me, is He displeased with me? 00:11:04.06\00:11:05.96 NO! He loves us. 00:11:05.99\00:11:06.96 He loves, I disciplined my son, I educate my son because 00:11:06.98\00:11:10.41 I love him. 00:11:10.44\00:11:11.41 I discipline, my daughter, I educate my daughter 00:11:11.42\00:11:13.09 because I love her. 00:11:13.12\00:11:14.09 God loves us and we don't want to forget that we don't want to 00:11:14.10\00:11:17.46 lose sight of the fact that what God is doing is He is, 00:11:17.49\00:11:21.27 working through these trials to bring good out of them, for us. 00:11:21.30\00:11:25.25 He's not seeking to chide us in a negative but a positive way 00:11:25.28\00:11:29.19 Well, Jesus told a parable. 00:11:29.23\00:11:30.95 The parable of the vine in the branches in which He indicated 00:11:30.98\00:11:34.89 that when a branch brings forth fruit. 00:11:34.93\00:11:38.42 God prunes it so that it will bring forth more fruit. 00:11:38.45\00:11:42.38 So God actually sees potential James He looks into our lives 00:11:42.42\00:11:46.84 and into our hearts and yes, He sees our weaknesses. 00:11:46.87\00:11:49.45 He sees our failures is He sees our sins, but God sees the 00:11:49.48\00:11:53.75 potential of our lives, and so He labors with us. 00:11:53.78\00:11:57.31 He works with us in infinite wisdom, He knows exactly what to 00:11:57.34\00:12:02.20 allow at what to forbid from taking place in our lives that 00:12:02.24\00:12:07.12 will move and navigate us through our experience in life 00:12:07.15\00:12:12.00 to the best yielding of fruit in our Christian experience. 00:12:12.04\00:12:15.42 So we need to keep positive. 00:12:15.46\00:12:16.43 We need to keep focused, and we need to keep perspective. 00:12:16.44\00:12:19.22 We need to understand why these things are happening to us. 00:12:19.26\00:12:22.02 We need to know as Manasseh probably learn and 00:12:22.05\00:12:24.66 Nebuchadnezzar learned, that even though we go through 00:12:24.69\00:12:27.26 some of these trials. 00:12:27.30\00:12:28.27 I'm sure you have been through them and I have been through 00:12:28.28\00:12:30.22 them, that God is working to bring good out of them. 00:12:30.25\00:12:34.34 I can look back on my life and say some of the greatest trials 00:12:34.38\00:12:37.22 I faced were turning points in my Christian experience. 00:12:37.25\00:12:40.29 Were areas where I needed to grow and where God was pruning 00:12:40.32\00:12:43.32 in order more fruit would come forth. 00:12:43.36\00:12:45.64 Often times people when they experience trials and suffering 00:12:45.67\00:12:51.14 they make the assumption that God is manufacturing these 00:12:51.17\00:12:56.60 trials for them. 00:12:56.64\00:12:57.61 But in fact, the sin problem has imposed great suffering 00:12:57.64\00:13:01.99 and trials upon the human race. 00:13:02.02\00:13:04.40 And God is not the manufacturer of the evil things. 00:13:04.44\00:13:08.14 I mean, we need to be very careful here because there are 00:13:08.17\00:13:10.39 people who have experienced very difficult things 00:13:10.43\00:13:14.20 in this life. 00:13:14.24\00:13:15.21 There are people who have been abused by their parents, there 00:13:15.24\00:13:17.65 are people who have experienced tragedy. 00:13:17.68\00:13:19.46 There are people who have gone through things that are just 00:13:19.49\00:13:22.51 unthinkable and we don't want to give the impression, and 00:13:22.55\00:13:25.80 Scripture does not want to give the impression, that God is 00:13:25.84\00:13:29.06 the author in source of terrible deeds that are 00:13:29.09\00:13:32.47 committed against us. 00:13:32.50\00:13:33.53 But what we do know for certainty is that all things 00:13:33.56\00:13:37.22 work together for the good for those who love the Lord and are 00:13:37.26\00:13:40.69 called according to His purpose. 00:13:40.73\00:13:42.46 Meaning that God, while He does not manufacture, 00:13:42.50\00:13:46.17 horrible things in our lives. 00:13:46.20\00:13:48.92 God does guide us through those things in order to bring 00:13:48.96\00:13:53.12 good out of them. 00:13:53.15\00:13:54.19 Absolutely, and there may be many of our listeners or 00:13:54.22\00:13:56.85 viewers who are going through some trials and 00:13:56.88\00:13:58.39 tragedies right now. 00:13:58.43\00:14:00.53 I know that each one of us, none of us are immune to that. 00:14:00.56\00:14:04.38 And if you are, please remember this that God is working to 00:14:04.42\00:14:07.43 bring good out of it. 00:14:07.46\00:14:08.50 God is going to over rule that evil, that tragedy, that trial. 00:14:08.54\00:14:13.40 He's going to overrule it for good. 00:14:13.44\00:14:14.88 He is going to bring something good out of it that can be 00:14:14.91\00:14:17.65 a turning point in your experience. 00:14:17.68\00:14:19.19 Don't go away, we will be right back 00:14:19.23\00:14:20.70
