Welcome back to our continuing study 00:00:01.98\00:00:02.95 of the book of Hebrews. 00:00:02.96\00:00:03.93 We're in chapter 11, of Hebrews, and we've been 00:00:03.94\00:00:06.06 noting this hall of faith, James. 00:00:06.09\00:00:08.18 And it's an incredible hall of faith, isn't it? 00:00:08.22\00:00:10.28 It's really, you know when you look at the experience 00:00:10.32\00:00:12.72 of God's people here, you realize that they are 00:00:12.75\00:00:15.64 encouraging or exhorting us, and their lives are 00:00:15.67\00:00:18.92 a testimony of the power of faith and grace. 00:00:18.95\00:00:21.52 The motivating, energizing power of God's love. 00:00:21.56\00:00:24.06 And that's what we see as we look at each one of these. 00:00:24.09\00:00:26.69 They are encouraging us, like for example Sarah, 00:00:26.73\00:00:30.06 who it says, received strength and was able to 00:00:30.09\00:00:33.39 deliver a child long after her age. 00:00:33.42\00:00:37.02 In other words, she was past the age of child bearing. 00:00:37.06\00:00:39.48 You know, Sarah is encouraging us today, 00:00:39.52\00:00:41.53 and she is saying if you think it is too late. 00:00:41.57\00:00:43.60 If you think that you have gone too far. 00:00:43.63\00:00:47.36 That you are too old for God to bless you, 00:00:47.40\00:00:51.09 remember what God did for me. 00:00:51.13\00:00:53.01 I was past age when it was no longer possible for me to 00:00:53.04\00:00:55.93 bear a child. 00:00:55.97\00:00:56.94 God bless me with a child. 00:00:56.95\00:00:57.92 God literally did a biological miracle here James. 00:00:57.93\00:01:01.21 I mean she could not bear a child, her womb was dead 00:01:01.24\00:01:04.52 and God intervened in her situation. 00:01:04.56\00:01:08.20 In that intervention, this elderly woman was able to 00:01:08.24\00:01:13.53 become pregnant and bring forth a son. 00:01:13.57\00:01:15.94 This is an amazing spiritual lesson, 00:01:15.98\00:01:18.36 for us as well, because spiritually. 00:01:18.40\00:01:20.75 our were womb is dead. 00:01:20.79\00:01:23.31 We are incapable of bringing forth righteousness. 00:01:23.35\00:01:26.96 We are incapable of producing good things 00:01:27.00\00:01:29.54 out of our lives. 00:01:29.58\00:01:30.90 God intervenes in our behalf and brings into our 00:01:30.94\00:01:34.19 lives through Jesus Christ the necessary strength 00:01:34.23\00:01:37.45 and empowering. 00:01:37.48\00:01:38.53 So it says by faith said Sarah received strength. 00:01:38.57\00:01:42.06 Ephesians 2 says, we're dead in trespasses and sin. 00:01:42.09\00:01:45.55 We are dead, literally, spiritually dead. 00:01:45.58\00:01:47.99 The next example that we have here is Abraham again. 00:01:48.02\00:01:52.04 He returns to Abraham and her first 17 by faith 00:01:52.07\00:01:56.07 Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. 00:01:56.11\00:01:59.90 Now this is an incredible manifestation of 00:01:59.94\00:02:03.67 confidence in God. 00:02:03.70\00:02:05.32 Here is Abraham who came out of a Babylonian city, 00:02:05.36\00:02:09.52 the city of Ur with definitely its Babylonia worship 00:02:09.55\00:02:13.68 system in which human sacrifice was common, 00:02:13.71\00:02:15.80 no doubt. 00:02:15.84\00:02:16.81 Here he is called out into a wilderness wandering 00:02:16.82\00:02:21.52 wherever God is going to lead Him. 00:02:21.55\00:02:24.19 And then God says now that your wife, Sarah, has had this 00:02:24.23\00:02:27.35 child, whom I promise you would have and you 00:02:27.39\00:02:31.24 doubted, but here you have one child. 00:02:31.28\00:02:33.89 And this child is going to be the heir of promise. 00:02:33.92\00:02:37.21 Now what I want you to do Abraham, is I want you to offer 00:02:37.25\00:02:41.57 Isaac as a sacrifice. 00:02:41.61\00:02:43.87 This is unbelievable. 00:02:43.91\00:02:46.10 You think about this you have to think about the times 00:02:46.13\00:02:49.82 when God calls us to make sacrifices. 00:02:49.86\00:02:51.61 The times we are called to make sacrifices that, perhaps 00:02:51.64\00:02:54.69 are going to really great. 00:02:54.72\00:02:56.31 I can't think of a greater sacrifice than this one. 00:02:56.34\00:02:59.20 And what I believe Abraham wants to say to us what 00:02:59.23\00:03:02.52 he wants to exhort us to is trust God no matter how 00:03:02.56\00:03:05.81 great a sacrifice God is calling us to make, 00:03:05.85\00:03:07.22 to trust God. 00:03:07.25\00:03:08.22 At times, we put our hope in human things, in fleshly 00:03:08.23\00:03:11.37 things and God at times has to take these 00:03:11.40\00:03:13.66 things from us. 00:03:13.69\00:03:14.66 Or at least test us and bring us to a place where we 00:03:14.67\00:03:17.14 are willing to allow Him to take these things from us. 00:03:17.18\00:03:19.92 So that we can continue to put our faith and our hope 00:03:19.95\00:03:22.66 and trust in Him. 00:03:22.69\00:03:23.66 Now here's the thing with Abraham, James. 00:03:23.67\00:03:26.60 Abraham was told by God to sacrifice Isaac, 00:03:26.64\00:03:29.70 his only son, the son of promise. 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.48 He also had another son, as we are well aware of. 00:03:32.52\00:03:36.01 But Ishmael was not the child promise. 00:03:36.05\00:03:38.65 So here Abraham is called upon to sacrifice Isaac. 00:03:38.69\00:03:42.07 He comes right up to the point of fulfilling this command with 00:03:42.11\00:03:46.70 the knife lifted over his child. 00:03:46.74\00:03:48.48 God stops him short of making the sacrifice and just 00:03:48.52\00:03:53.21 absolutely eradicates from his heart. 00:03:53.25\00:03:56.82 Any sense of appeasement or human sacrifice, and says no, 00:03:56.86\00:04:01.04 I'm going to make the sacrifice. 00:04:01.07\00:04:02.60 I'm going to provide the sacrifice Abraham, this is not 00:04:02.63\00:04:07.44 something you can do, you are not sufficient, the human race 00:04:07.47\00:04:10.51 can not provide the atonement for their sins. 00:04:10.55\00:04:13.72 Later on, it's very interesting that God told Moses that human 00:04:13.76\00:04:18.45 sacrifices was an abomination to Him. 00:04:18.49\00:04:20.91 This is as a good point Ty, because you think why 00:04:20.94\00:04:23.16 did God do that. 00:04:23.19\00:04:24.16 Well He did for the very purpose of removing from 00:04:24.17\00:04:27.01 our understanding in any kind religious aspect, 00:04:27.04\00:04:30.00 especially towards God, the idea that He requires 00:04:30.03\00:04:32.96 human sacrifice. 00:04:32.99\00:04:34.25 Well two things had to be here first of all there had 00:04:34.29\00:04:36.33 to be at least an Abraham. 00:04:36.37\00:04:38.56 A confidence and trust in God, were He would be 00:04:38.60\00:04:41.79 obedient and follow through and in that pay path 00:04:41.82\00:04:44.99 of obedience is where we find that God will reveal 00:04:45.02\00:04:48.15 greater truth to us. 00:04:48.18\00:04:49.84 So that we can perceive and understand His character 00:04:49.87\00:04:52.32 more fully, but in disobedience, there is not greater light. 00:04:52.35\00:04:56.28 God can't communicate to us when we're turned away 00:04:56.32\00:04:59.16 from Him, walking away from Him. 00:04:59.20\00:05:00.26 Abraham follows through, he does as God says, and God 00:05:00.30\00:05:04.29 communicates to him I will provide the sacrifice. 00:05:04.32\00:05:07.57 You know, I love this in on a love as it continues on 00:05:07.60\00:05:10.82 because we find Isaac blessing Jacob and Esau 00:05:10.85\00:05:13.78 We find Jacob, when he was dying blessing both his sons. 00:05:13.81\00:05:16.58 Even the though he was worshiping leaning on the top 00:05:16.62\00:05:19.36 of his staff. 00:05:19.39\00:05:20.36 We see here people who are elderly, who people are 00:05:20.37\00:05:22.48 old people, are crippled people who are 00:05:22.52\00:05:24.22 leaning on staffs. 00:05:24.26\00:05:25.84 Today we might say they are in wheel chairs, and we find 00:05:25.87\00:05:28.23 that God is using them to bless others. 00:05:28.27\00:05:30.40 In other words, it doesn't matter how old you are. 00:05:30.43\00:05:32.75 It doesn't matter if you have to come to church in a 00:05:32.79\00:05:35.08 wheelchair, is yet to come to church with your 00:05:35.11\00:05:37.09 walker, or your cane, God can use us to be a blessing 00:05:37.13\00:05:40.36 to someone else. 00:05:40.39\00:05:41.70 God is encouraging us, exhorting here in His word 00:05:41.73\00:05:45.50 through Jacob He is exhorting us in His word through 00:05:45.54\00:05:49.27 Isaac that we can be a blessing in our old age. 00:05:49.31\00:05:52.13 Look, at verse 23, James, the next example is Moses 00:05:52.16\00:05:54.94 and a lot of said about Moses here. 00:05:54.98\00:05:57.53 It says by faith Moses, and then it goes on to 00:05:57.56\00:06:00.86 describe his experience, but I want to highlight the 00:06:00.89\00:06:03.33 active parts of what is happening here. 00:06:03.36\00:06:05.94 In verse 23 by faith Moses. 00:06:05.98\00:06:08.43 He when he was born was hidden for three months 00:06:08.47\00:06:12.68 by his parents. 00:06:12.71\00:06:13.95 So it's his parents, who are exercising the faith 00:06:13.98\00:06:17.44 here to hide him because they saw that he was a 00:06:17.47\00:06:20.89 beautiful child. 00:06:20.93\00:06:21.92 And they were not afraid of the king's command. 00:06:21.95\00:06:25.00 Then it says in verse 24 by faith Moses when he 00:06:25.03\00:06:28.34 became of age, refused to be called the son of 00:06:28.37\00:06:31.64 Pharaoh's daughter by faith in verse 25. 00:06:31.68\00:06:34.23 He chose rather to suffer affliction with the people 00:06:34.26\00:06:38.46 of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. 00:06:38.50\00:06:43.07 Then over in verse 27 by faith he forsake each ship, 00:06:43.11\00:06:47.65 and he endured seeing Him, Who is invisible. 00:06:47.69\00:06:50.86 So let me just highlight this Moses, by faith was 00:06:50.90\00:06:54.01 hidden, and his family was not afraid of the King. 00:06:54.04\00:06:58.27 Moses by faith refused, Moses by faith choose, 00:06:58.31\00:07:02.51 Moses by faith forsook. 00:07:02.54\00:07:05.34 Moses by faith endured, all of these are active words 00:07:05.38\00:07:09.25 that are describing an active, aggressive faith. 00:07:09.28\00:07:12.42 I like this to because you have parents who are not 00:07:12.46\00:07:15.56 afraid of the king's commandments. 00:07:15.59\00:07:17.26 Now parents today, we are afraid. 00:07:17.29\00:07:18.61 We are afraid for our children. 00:07:18.65\00:07:19.89 We are afraid for society, were afraid for their influence. 00:07:19.93\00:07:22.53 And so Moses as parents as encourages us to not be 00:07:22.56\00:07:25.06 afraid to what is right to what is proper 00:07:25.09\00:07:27.37 for your children. 00:07:27.41\00:07:28.78 So Moses' parents are involved here and we got 00:07:28.82\00:07:31.06 Moses himself. 00:07:31.10\00:07:32.07 Moses could have chosen to be Pharaoh he could've 00:07:32.08\00:07:34.26 chosen the riches of Egypt. 00:07:34.29\00:07:36.51 We are allured by the riches of the world by the 00:07:36.54\00:07:39.30 prosperity of the world so Moses is exhorting us. 00:07:39.33\00:07:42.05 You can lay those things aside. 00:07:42.09\00:07:43.76 What if Ty, what if Moses would have chosen to be a Pharaoh? 00:07:43.79\00:07:48.22 What if he would have chosen to be a prince in Egypt? 00:07:48.26\00:07:52.24 Where would Moses be right now? 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.04 Where would we be right now? 00:07:54.08\00:07:55.78 Moses would probably be in a museum along, with King Tut. 00:07:55.82\00:08:00.56 He probably be lined up with all of his treasures 00:08:00.60\00:08:03.01 we would be paying, we be lined up to paying 00:08:03.05\00:08:05.43 big bucks to see Moses. 00:08:05.46\00:08:06.70 Where is Moses right now? 00:08:06.73\00:08:07.93 Moses is in heaven, 00:08:07.96\00:08:09.19 Moses is in heaven, we know that because Jude tells 00:08:09.22\00:08:12.81 us that Michael came down and resurrects Moses 00:08:12.85\00:08:15.83 and took him to heaven. 00:08:15.87\00:08:17.02 We know that because when Jesus was transfigured 00:08:17.06\00:08:18.81 Moses and Elijah, who was translated without seeing death. 00:08:18.85\00:08:22.05 Were there by His side as He was transferred we know 00:08:22.08\00:08:25.42 that Moses is in heaven now think about that! 00:08:25.46\00:08:27.78 He refused the pleasure of sin for a season. 00:08:27.82\00:08:30.07 That's the problem with sin friend, it's only seasonal, 00:08:30.11\00:08:33.17 so that he could have an enduring, and non-ending 00:08:33.21\00:08:35.94 pleasure in heaven with God for all eternity. 00:08:35.98\00:08:38.67 Moses is encouraging us it is worth it. 00:08:38.71\00:08:41.05 It's worth it. 00:08:41.09\00:08:42.06 This list of individuals here in Hebrews chapter 11. 00:08:42.07\00:08:45.78 Everything that we have read about them just fills 00:08:45.82\00:08:49.59 us with awe. 00:08:49.62\00:08:50.72 I mean, we are very impressed by all that they have 00:08:50.76\00:08:53.59 achieved and then we have to pause and remember that 00:08:53.62\00:08:56.42 these were faulty weak human beings who were 00:08:56.45\00:09:00.76 incapable of achieving any of this in and of themselves. 00:09:00.80\00:09:04.80 In fact, each on of these individuals, 00:09:04.83\00:09:07.55 If their lives are examined have a record of sin upon them. 00:09:07.59\00:09:12.93 Have a life of sin in their history is incredible 00:09:12.96\00:09:16.21 that these are the individuals that were called upon 00:09:16.24\00:09:19.45 to look to as examples. 00:09:19.49\00:09:20.64 Well look at verse 31. 00:09:20.68\00:09:21.76 By faith the harlot Rahab, the prostitute Rahab. 00:09:21.79\00:09:24.54 Yes right there, what have we seen here? 00:09:24.58\00:09:27.48 She exercised faith, and you know there are many of us 00:09:27.51\00:09:30.88 who do not feel worthy to look to God. 00:09:30.91\00:09:32.74 We don't feel worthy to be excepted of God. 00:09:32.78\00:09:34.65 We don't feel worthy to be a part of God's plan of 00:09:34.68\00:09:39.27 rest and she was its not about worthiness friends. 00:09:39.31\00:09:43.86 It's faith in Jesus Christ, who is worthy. 00:09:43.90\00:09:46.75 Who makes us worthy, who accepts us because we look 00:09:46.79\00:09:49.07 to Him and we don't look to ourselves. 00:09:49.10\00:09:50.44 Rahab wants to encourage us, its not about being worthy. 00:09:50.48\00:09:53.05 Yes, none of these individuals were worthy 00:09:53.09\00:09:55.72 No and look at it, he goes on and mentions Gideon who 00:09:55.76\00:09:58.64 basically just needed one fleece after another. 00:09:58.68\00:10:03.01 One sign after another. 00:10:03.04\00:10:04.01 Barack who needed Deborah to go out with him. 00:10:04.02\00:10:06.08 Sampson who messed up over and over again. 00:10:06.12\00:10:08.16 You know sometimes you mess up so many times. 00:10:08.19\00:10:10.20 We think, can God still use me? 00:10:10.24\00:10:12.12 God still use Sampson and Sampson 00:10:12.15\00:10:13.99 is one of the faithful. 00:10:14.03\00:10:15.00 Look at David King leader and then he commits 00:10:15.01\00:10:17.36 adultery with a Bathsheba and kills Uriah, her husband. 00:10:17.39\00:10:21.93 And what is God saying, he's among the faithful. 00:10:21.97\00:10:24.82 What is that mean? 00:10:24.85\00:10:25.82 We can mess up big time, we can really fail. 00:10:25.83\00:10:28.68 But God will count as there. 00:10:28.71\00:10:30.08 David wants to encourages us. 00:10:30.11\00:10:31.40 Sampson wants to encourage us, place your faith and 00:10:31.44\00:10:33.91 your trust not in your self but place your faith and trust 00:10:33.94\00:10:36.23 in Jesus Christ. 00:10:36.26\00:10:37.30 By faith these individuals subdued kingdoms in verse 33. 00:10:37.33\00:10:41.62 They worked righteousness. 00:10:41.66\00:10:43.55 They obtained promises, they stopped the mouths of Lions. 00:10:43.59\00:10:48.00 They quenched verse 34, the violent fire, they escaped the 00:10:48.04\00:10:51.93 edge of the sword and out of weakness they were made strong. 00:10:51.97\00:10:55.83 They became valiant in battle. 00:10:55.87\00:10:58.14 All these rascals did all of that. 00:10:58.17\00:11:00.25 I mean and it's interesting because we're running 00:11:00.28\00:11:02.30 out of time and it says right here in verse 32. 00:11:02.33\00:11:04.32 What shall I say more for time will 00:11:04.35\00:11:05.82 fail to tell. 00:11:05.86\00:11:07.36 Time will fail to tell, friends of all these imperfect 00:11:07.39\00:11:10.79 human beings in the Old Testament, who by faith were 00:11:10.83\00:11:13.76 conquerors, time would fail to tell, but friends 00:11:13.80\00:11:16.61 we need to have faith, confidence in God's word. 00:11:16.64\00:11:19.55 Hebrews chapters 11 closes on a powerful note 00:11:19.59\00:11:22.43 informing us that God has provided something better 00:11:22.46\00:11:26.73 for us that they. 00:11:26.77\00:11:28.86 The faithful of all ages will not be made 00:11:28.90\00:11:31.36 perfect without us. 00:11:31.39\00:11:33.25 We have two groups of people hear James, the 00:11:33.29\00:11:35.44 faithful of all ages and then there are God's people 00:11:35.48\00:11:39.28 post Christ.
