Hi friends, I'm your co-host James along with Ty 00:00:19.79\00:00:23.00 And we are in Books of the Book 00:00:23.41\00:00:26.04 We'd like to invite you to join us with a Bible, a listening ear 00:00:26.07\00:00:29.25 as we get back in the Book of Hebrews. 00:00:29.28\00:00:31.47 James, the book of Hebrews is an extraordinary revelation. 00:00:31.50\00:00:35.13 It is coming to us in the New Testament 00:00:35.16\00:00:38.57 when Jesus has come to this world, as God's 00:00:38.60\00:00:41.77 supreme revelation. 00:00:41.80\00:00:43.84 The book of Hebrews, over and over again emphasizes this idea 00:00:43.88\00:00:48.49 that in the person of Jesus Christ, we encounter superior 00:00:48.52\00:00:52.62 things, better things. 00:00:52.65\00:00:54.13 Jesus constitutes a better sacrifice. 00:00:54.16\00:00:57.25 Jesus constitutes a better priest in comparison to the 00:00:57.28\00:01:02.14 Levitical priesthood. 00:01:02.17\00:01:03.24 Jesus is a better mediator who brings within our reach 00:01:03.27\00:01:08.00 a better covenant, a new covenant. 00:01:08.03\00:01:11.52 As Paul has been developing that theme, now we are in chapter 10 00:01:11.55\00:01:15.38 and he is going to be re-emphazing some of the points 00:01:15.41\00:01:18.80 he has covered, but then he is going to be adding some new 00:01:18.83\00:01:21.67 dimensions of understanding. 00:01:21.70\00:01:23.18 Yeah, this has been a continuing theme through 00:01:23.21\00:01:25.36 the book of Hebrews. 00:01:25.39\00:01:26.36 Something better, offering us better things. 00:01:26.37\00:01:28.43 Also another theme has been the relationalship aspect 00:01:28.46\00:01:31.51 of our experiencing Christianity our experience with God. 00:01:31.54\00:01:34.99 God is seeking to draw us into a close relationship with Him. 00:01:35.02\00:01:38.22 Hebrews 10 has beautiful insights concerning the plan 00:01:38.25\00:01:42.71 of salvation and concerning the gospel and the picture we 00:01:42.74\00:01:45.32 have of Jesus Christ. 00:01:45.35\00:01:46.36 Let's just start there, in Hebrews, Chapter 10 00:01:46.39\00:01:48.60 with verse 1. 00:01:48.63\00:01:49.80 "For the law having a shadow of good things to come," 00:01:49.83\00:01:52.05 "and not the very image of the things," 00:01:52.08\00:01:53.60 "can never with those sacrifices which they offered" 00:01:53.63\00:01:56.27 "year by year continually make the comers there unto perfect. " 00:01:56.30\00:02:00.31 "For then would they not have ceased to be offered?" 00:02:00.34\00:02:02.81 "because that the worshippers once purged should have had" 00:02:02.84\00:02:05.66 "no more conscience of sins. " 00:02:05.69\00:02:08.03 So here we have a contrast between the image 00:02:08.06\00:02:11.10 and the reality. 00:02:11.13\00:02:13.13 The image is the symbolic system of salvation that was 00:02:13.16\00:02:18.52 instituted in the wilderness with the Hebrew people. 00:02:18.55\00:02:21.20 And the reality, that Paul is bringing to our attention here, 00:02:21.23\00:02:25.03 is embodied in the person of Jesus Christ, we have 00:02:25.06\00:02:28.08 type, symbol, and then we have reality, we have fulfillment 00:02:28.11\00:02:33.59 in the person of Jesus. 00:02:33.62\00:02:34.93 Now we've already looked at the new covenant and I think 00:02:34.96\00:02:37.75 it's going to be reiterated here in this chapter. 00:02:37.78\00:02:40.57 In the new covenant we have understood the law was to be 00:02:40.60\00:02:45.25 placed in our hearts and minds. 00:02:45.28\00:02:46.25 But here we have this verse that seems to indicate 00:02:46.26\00:02:49.02 the law was just a shadow and that it was basically 00:02:49.05\00:02:53.31 done away with. 00:02:53.34\00:02:54.37 It was a shadow of good things to come, and it was not 00:02:54.40\00:02:58.00 something that we need to continue to keep. 00:02:58.03\00:03:00.14 So, is there a contradiction taking place here? 00:03:00.17\00:03:02.79 Absolutely not, we need to understand in the broader 00:03:02.82\00:03:04.81 context of Scripture, what's taking place here is the word 00:03:04.84\00:03:08.96 law is a broad word that sometimes is referring to the 00:03:08.99\00:03:13.47 symbolic system of salvation, the ceremonial laws that were 00:03:13.50\00:03:18.42 instituted in the Old Testament. 00:03:18.45\00:03:19.42 Sometimes the law we are dealing with in Scripture, and we need 00:03:19.43\00:03:22.84 look at our context always and find out what we 00:03:22.87\00:03:24.94 are talking about. 00:03:24.97\00:03:25.94 Sometimes the law is dealing with the moral law in particular 00:03:25.95\00:03:28.80 and in this particular context we know that in the flow of 00:03:28.83\00:03:33.11 Hebrews he is, primarily here, dealing with the ceremonial 00:03:33.14\00:03:36.70 system and it could not through it's sacrifices, day by day, 00:03:36.73\00:03:41.96 year by year, through it's symbolic priesthood, 00:03:41.99\00:03:45.34 it could not accomplish atonement in salvation for 00:03:45.37\00:03:49.32 the people, so entered Jesus as the fulfillment 00:03:49.35\00:03:53.02 of those things. 00:03:53.05\00:03:54.02 So that the symbolic system becomes obsolete, it becomes 00:03:54.03\00:03:58.91 useless, it is eclipsed by the better things 00:03:58.94\00:04:02.31 that we have in Jesus. 00:04:02.34\00:04:03.60 So this fits with what Paul is seeking to do, he's seeking 00:04:03.63\00:04:05.42 to transition to Hebrews from the types, from the ceremonies, 00:04:05.45\00:04:10.84 the ceremonial law sacrifices, the ceremonial laws that 00:04:10.87\00:04:14.37 governed the priesthood, and the remission of sins to the 00:04:14.40\00:04:17.45 reality of Christ. 00:04:17.48\00:04:18.45 So he's talking about the law of ceremonies, the ceremonial 00:04:18.46\00:04:21.84 law is becoming obsolete and it's making room for Jesus 00:04:21.87\00:04:25.14 a better sacrifice. 00:04:25.17\00:04:26.30 Now that is definitely one aspect of what Paul is saying. 00:04:26.33\00:04:29.03 But sometimes we fail to understand that there is a 00:04:29.06\00:04:32.37 sense in which, in that Old Testament, old covenant system, 00:04:32.41\00:04:37.48 that even the moral law was being handled, dealt with, 00:04:37.51\00:04:41.80 experienced in a way that was insufficient. 00:04:41.83\00:04:44.56 We looked at that previously when we dealt with 00:04:44.59\00:04:47.31 the new covenant, Chapter 8 in Hebrews. 00:04:47.35\00:04:49.53 We saw that when God gave the Ten Commandment law, 00:04:49.56\00:04:52.48 to the people, which of itself is holy, just and good according 00:04:52.51\00:04:56.91 to Romans, Chapter 7 verse 12. 00:04:56.94\00:04:58.68 We also noticed that the people made promises to God 00:04:58.71\00:05:02.98 They said all that the Lord has said we will do. 00:05:03.01\00:05:06.43 We will obey all His commandments. 00:05:06.46\00:05:07.94 Hebrews Chapter 8, informs us, rather emphatically 00:05:07.97\00:05:12.19 that our promises to God, their promises to God, 00:05:12.22\00:05:15.83 Were promises that could not be fulfilled, 00:05:15.86\00:05:18.13 they were weak and insufficient to bring to pass their obedience 00:05:18.16\00:05:22.08 even to the moral law. 00:05:22.11\00:05:23.16 So Jesus steps in, He institutes a new covenant and it based on 00:05:23.19\00:05:26.50 better promises, in which God says I will write my law 00:05:26.53\00:05:29.57 in your heart, I will give you a new spirit, I'll give you a 00:05:29.60\00:05:33.30 heart of flesh where you had a heart of stone. 00:05:33.33\00:05:35.42 I will bring to pass in you, the fulfillment of 00:05:35.45\00:05:39.04 even the moral law. 00:05:39.08\00:05:40.25 That makes sense. 00:05:40.29\00:05:41.40 Now here Paul goes on and he says there is to be no more 00:05:41.43\00:05:44.58 conscious of sins. 00:05:44.61\00:05:46.01 Then he says with the sacrifices of the animals there was 00:05:46.04\00:05:49.71 a remembrance of sin and again and again 00:05:49.74\00:05:51.96 made every year. 00:05:51.99\00:05:53.09 But because it was not possible for the blood of bulls and goats 00:05:53.12\00:05:56.52 verse 4, to take away sins. 00:05:56.55\00:05:59.12 In other words, the sacrifice of Jesus is actually going to 00:05:59.15\00:06:02.84 going to remove our relationship to, our connection with, our 00:06:02.87\00:06:06.63 consciousness of sin in our lives. 00:06:06.66\00:06:08.61 This is amazing, this is, if that's not what we have 00:06:08.64\00:06:13.76 presented to us in the gospel, and in the plan of salvation, 00:06:13.79\00:06:16.66 the implication here is that we would have an endless cycle, 00:06:16.69\00:06:20.97 going on and on and on and on and on. 00:06:21.00\00:06:24.07 He makes this clear when he informs us in the first three 00:06:24.10\00:06:27.53 verses here, that the sacrifices were offered over and over 00:06:27.56\00:06:31.37 and over again. 00:06:31.40\00:06:32.55 He is his logic, here is his reasoning. 00:06:32.58\00:06:35.06 He says, if those sacrifices could have atoned for sin, 00:06:35.09\00:06:40.45 if they could have saved from sin, then they would have 00:06:40.48\00:06:44.20 ceased to be offered. 00:06:44.23\00:06:45.31 So the very fact that the offerings continued over and 00:06:45.34\00:06:48.75 over and over again, is proof, it's an indication, 00:06:48.78\00:06:51.58 that they were insufficient. 00:06:51.61\00:06:53.52 Then Jesus comes, and Jesus makes one sacrifice, 00:06:53.55\00:06:56.80 which is fully sufficient, that Paul speaks of 00:06:56.83\00:07:00.50 a number of times in Hebrews, 00:07:00.53\00:07:02.03 as accomplishing salvation from sin, purging from sin, 00:07:02.06\00:07:06.69 atonement from sin, in a past tense sense. 00:07:06.72\00:07:10.71 Jesus purged us from our sins in Himself. 00:07:10.74\00:07:14.69 Then we by faith are called upon to enter into the 00:07:14.73\00:07:18.45 reality of that purging from sin. 00:07:18.48\00:07:20.92 You know what I see here Ty, I see a lot of repetition 00:07:20.95\00:07:23.99 a lot of summary that is taking place here, Chapter 10. 00:07:24.02\00:07:26.79 In relation to truths that are pointed out in previous chapters 00:07:26.82\00:07:29.71 but then with some added information. 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.15 Some aspects that we haven't covered yet. 00:07:32.18\00:07:34.86 As we look at this, the taking away of sins, the perfection of 00:07:34.89\00:07:38.09 God's people, we see it in the context of a truth that has been 00:07:38.12\00:07:41.23 brought through the book of Hebrews, time and time again 00:07:41.26\00:07:43.93 the truth in transition from the old types to the new realities 00:07:43.96\00:07:47.33 in Jesus Christ. 00:07:47.36\00:07:48.49 For example, you get down here to verse 6, 00:07:48.52\00:07:50.51 "In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin 00:07:50.54\00:07:53.42 thou has no pleasure. " 00:07:53.46\00:07:54.97 If God did not have pleasure in the sacrifice of animals, 00:07:55.00\00:07:58.48 we talked about that earlier. 00:07:58.51\00:07:59.64 Yeah, Isaiah Chapter 1, we had mentioned in a previous program. 00:07:59.67\00:08:03.40 But there are many other verses where God is communicating 00:08:03.43\00:08:06.36 to the Israelites, in the Old Testament, and he is saying 00:08:06.39\00:08:09.20 to them basically, you've misunderstood, 00:08:09.23\00:08:11.98 you misunderstood my intent. 00:08:12.01\00:08:13.72 The sacrificial system is not an equivalent of the pagan rites 00:08:13.75\00:08:19.57 of sacrifice in which the pagan deities are appeased 00:08:19.60\00:08:23.98 by the sacrifices. 00:08:24.01\00:08:25.11 I'm not into the blood of animals, I am not looking for a 00:08:25.14\00:08:29.17 continual flow of blood. 00:08:29.20\00:08:30.90 This was all symbolic so you could understand the wages 00:08:30.93\00:08:35.34 of sin, the affect of sin, and what I am telling you is 00:08:35.37\00:08:38.35 I never had pleasure in any kind of sacrificial system. 00:08:38.38\00:08:42.04 So what I want you to understand now, Paul is telling us, 00:08:42.07\00:08:46.46 God is telling us through Paul, 00:08:46.49\00:08:47.46 what I want you to understand now is I have sent forth Jesus 00:08:47.49\00:08:50.92 My Son, to be the complete and total fulfillment of what does 00:08:50.95\00:08:57.37 bring me pleasure, what I am really after, what I am into, 00:08:57.40\00:09:01.37 and that is I am going to make for you a personal 00:09:01.40\00:09:05.12 self-sacrifice of infinite love on your behalf. 00:09:05.16\00:09:08.84 To demonstrate to you, to prove beyond all shadow of a doubt 00:09:08.87\00:09:12.20 that I love you more than My own life. 00:09:12.23\00:09:14.85 This is incredible, really because the animal sacrifices 00:09:14.88\00:09:18.31 weren't getting it. 00:09:18.34\00:09:19.55 I know today, there are a lot of people who would never 00:09:19.58\00:09:21.55 want to see an animal sacrifice. 00:09:21.59\00:09:23.38 There are people who are vegetarians because they don't 00:09:23.42\00:09:25.38 want to see an animal sacrificed they don't like to see the 00:09:25.41\00:09:27.99 suffering and the pain that is afflicted upon animals in order 00:09:28.02\00:09:31.23 for us to have them to eat for food. 00:09:31.26\00:09:33.85 If that causes us to change our lifestyle to some degree, 00:09:33.88\00:09:38.14 I think in this context we need to say, well how much 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.87 more the sacrifice of God Himself. 00:09:40.90\00:09:44.07 In other words, God is demonstrating, in a very real 00:09:44.10\00:09:47.36 sense, that sin requires the sacrifice, sin leads to death, 00:09:47.39\00:09:50.95 I don't like death. 00:09:50.98\00:09:52.27 Death is an enemy and I want to show you what death 00:09:52.30\00:09:54.83 will ultimately do. 00:09:54.86\00:09:55.83 Death will ultimately kill Me and I'm going to make that 00:09:55.86\00:09:58.49 sacrifice in order to reveal to you that ultimate consequence 00:09:58.52\00:10:01.89 because I love you. 00:10:01.92\00:10:04.06 Not to appease Myself, but because I love you. 00:10:04.09\00:10:07.11 God is not a blood-thirsty deity. 00:10:07.14\00:10:10.06 In fact this is a good point at which we should remind 00:10:10.09\00:10:13.90 ourselves that we see a side of God's character and heart 00:10:13.93\00:10:19.71 through out Scripture, in which He is sensitive. 00:10:19.74\00:10:22.42 Not only to the human situation, human suffering, but the Bible 00:10:22.45\00:10:27.13 actually presents God as a God who is sensitive about 00:10:27.16\00:10:30.51 the sufferings of creation in general. 00:10:30.54\00:10:32.29 I think, for example, where Jesus say not a sparrow 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.75 falls to the ground without your Father taking notice, 00:10:34.78\00:10:37.17 How about Jonah? 00:10:37.21\00:10:38.55 Yeah, the last verse of Jonah God says to Jonah basically 00:10:38.58\00:10:42.15 at the end of Chapter 4, Jonah I don't want to destroy Nineveh 00:10:42.18\00:10:46.35 because there are all these people and much cattle. 00:10:46.38\00:10:49.09 And think about it this way Ty, you said just a minute ago, 00:10:49.12\00:10:51.67 God is not a blood-thirsty tyrant, but sin is, 00:10:51.70\00:10:55.03 a blood-thirsty tyrant. 00:10:55.07\00:10:56.55 Sin would continue to consume animal lives, sin would continue 00:10:56.58\00:11:00.39 to require death after death after death. 00:11:00.42\00:11:02.16 But praise God, sin is going to be destroyed and death, 00:11:02.19\00:11:06.23 the last enemy of God, according to 1 Corinthians 15, 00:11:06.26\00:11:08.77 death is an enemy of God friends. 00:11:08.80\00:11:10.03 Death is going to be annihilated from this earth. 00:11:10.06\00:11:12.51 No more death, no more pain, no more sorrow. 00:11:12.54\00:11:14.78 That's what we are told in Revelation Chapter 22. 00:11:14.81\00:11:16.95 So Paul says, actually it is God here, in quote marks, 00:11:16.98\00:11:21.56 speaking through Paul. 00:11:21.59\00:11:22.86 He said, in verse 5, "sacrifice and offering you did not desire, 00:11:22.89\00:11:26.76 but a body You have prepared Me" 00:11:26.79\00:11:28.78 Now we have this body. 00:11:28.81\00:11:30.01 We have Jesus in His incarnation, coming 00:11:30.04\00:11:34.42 forth into the world. 00:11:34.46\00:11:35.71 This is not what I wanted, God said with animal sacrifices. 00:11:35.74\00:11:39.64 Here's what I am providing. 00:11:39.68\00:11:41.39 I Myself, in the person of My Son, am taking a body 00:11:41.42\00:11:45.54 upon Myself, burnt offerings, verse 6. 00:11:45.57\00:11:48.33 As you read, it is not anything I have had pleasure in. 00:11:48.36\00:11:50.69 I come forth, I come forth into the world to do the will of God. 00:11:50.72\00:11:55.54 The will of God, in this context, is that the human race 00:11:55.57\00:11:59.94 would be redeemed, that sin would be atoned for, 00:11:59.97\00:12:03.15 that in fact we would have salvation by virtue of God's 00:12:03.18\00:12:08.16 once for all act in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:12:08.19\00:12:11.12 Here's the clarification, verse 8, here is the clarification 00:12:11.15\00:12:14.02 of what we've talked about in verse 1, with the law. 00:12:14.05\00:12:16.41 It says then, "when He said sacrifice and offering, and 00:12:16.44\00:12:19.08 burnt offerings, offerings for sin, thou would not 00:12:19.11\00:12:21.49 neither has pleasure therein which are offered by the law. " 00:12:21.52\00:12:24.82 By what law? What law are we talking about when we are 00:12:24.85\00:12:27.32 talking about offerings for sin, when we are talking about 00:12:27.35\00:12:29.49 sacrifices, we are talking about the ceremonial law. 00:12:29.52\00:12:32.43 So that law is the one that is a shadow that is being done 00:12:32.46\00:12:36.21 way with, then he said, verse 9, "low, I come to do Thy will 00:12:36.24\00:12:40.25 oh God," He takes away the first, that first ceremonial 00:12:40.28\00:12:43.94 law, the sacrifice He is taking away the first that He may 00:12:43.97\00:12:47.19 establish the second. 00:12:47.22\00:12:48.55 Now I like this because a lot of people will say, the law 00:12:48.58\00:12:51.53 was nailed to the cross. 00:12:51.56\00:12:52.53 What I would say in response to that Ty, 00:12:52.54\00:12:54.80 in the context is, indeed the law was nailed to the cross, 00:12:54.83\00:12:58.21 in this sense, Jesus Christ was the ultimate sacrifice 00:12:58.24\00:13:01.63 He was the ultimate reality of the ceremonial law. 00:13:01.66\00:13:05.58 He was the Lamb of God. 00:13:05.61\00:13:07.40 That Lamb was nailed to the cross. 00:13:07.43\00:13:09.89 The ceremonial law was nailed to the cross. 00:13:09.92\00:13:12.68 Not the moral law, friends, the ceremonial law. 00:13:12.71\00:13:15.26 We understand that when we look at this in context of Hebrews 10 00:13:15.29\00:13:19.48 In verse 10, we are saved, we are redeemed by the offering of 00:13:19.51\00:13:25.43 the body of Jesus once for all. 00:13:25.46\00:13:28.15 This is a favorite terminology for the Apostle Paul. 00:13:28.18\00:13:32.48 Once for all, which is a universal statement 00:13:32.51\00:13:35.74 with the word all. 00:13:35.77\00:13:37.41 Every human being is included in what God is doing 00:13:37.44\00:13:40.33 through Jesus Christ at the cross, universal statement. 00:13:40.37\00:13:43.49 But it is also a statement that occurs as a one time historic 00:13:43.53\00:13:47.70 act that is not repeated over and over again. 00:13:47.73\00:13:50.55 You know it is very important to understand the context of 00:13:50.58\00:13:52.64 this verse 11 is going to give us a lot. 00:13:52.67\00:13:54.37 And we are going to get to that verse and look at that context 00:13:54.40\00:13:57.24 not just in Paul's setting, but in a present day setting. 00:13:57.27\00:14:00.14 Right after this. 00:14:00.17\00:14:02.41
