Thanks for staying with us for our continuing study 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.16 of the book of Hebrews. 00:00:03.19\00:00:04.24 We are in Chapter 9, James, and we left 00:00:04.27\00:00:06.74 off in verse 16. 00:00:06.77\00:00:08.29 We were focusing on the death. 00:00:08.33\00:00:11.18 We are focusing on the sacrifice God has made in 00:00:11.21\00:00:14.35 the person of the Son, Jesus Christ. 00:00:14.39\00:00:16.19 And in that context, we read first 17, and it 00:00:16.22\00:00:19.15 says, "For a testament is of force after men 00:00:19.19\00:00:21.81 are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all 00:00:21.85\00:00:24.44 while the Testator lives. " 00:00:24.48\00:00:26.28 This is an analogy that Paul is using. 00:00:26.32\00:00:28.67 He is talking about the fact that after someone dies. 00:00:28.70\00:00:30.87 Of course, the will, the testament, 00:00:30.91\00:00:33.17 his living testament goes into effect. 00:00:33.20\00:00:35.39 But in a symbolic sense, we are looking at in context 00:00:35.43\00:00:38.97 of the cross of the Gospel. 00:00:39.00\00:00:40.34 And we recognize that it was by the blood of 00:00:40.37\00:00:43.04 Jesus is by the death of Jesus that force, that power, 00:00:43.07\00:00:47.12 that motive was given to the new covenant. 00:00:47.15\00:00:49.66 Paul says it this way in 2 Corinthians, 5. 00:00:49.69\00:00:52.77 He says, the love of Christ constrains us, the 00:00:52.81\00:00:55.86 love of Christ, friends, is the force, 00:00:55.89\00:00:57.97 is the power that motives us 00:00:58.00\00:00:59.86 to embrace the realities of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:00:59.90\00:01:03.14 This is an incredible thing, is an astounding thing to 00:01:03.17\00:01:07.09 realize, that the Bible and Hebrews in particular here, 00:01:07.13\00:01:11.02 is telling us that God has made the sacrifice, 00:01:11.05\00:01:15.01 on our behalf. 00:01:15.04\00:01:16.91 We are going to cover all the verses here in between 00:01:16.95\00:01:20.78 but the same point is emphasized down in verse 26 James. 00:01:20.81\00:01:25.04 That we find up in verse 16, again, he says, that He, that's 00:01:25.07\00:01:29.26 Jesus, God incarnate, has appeared to put away sin by 00:01:29.30\00:01:33.40 the sacrifice of Himself. 00:01:33.44\00:01:35.40 We have already mentioned that biblically speaking, this 00:01:35.43\00:01:38.79 is the definition of love. 00:01:38.82\00:01:41.69 When the Bible says God is love, the Bible means God 00:01:41.72\00:01:46.24 is utterly and completely self-giving and other-centered. 00:01:46.27\00:01:51.09 He literally values our lives more than His own. 00:01:51.12\00:01:55.93 So God seen our situation as fallen sinners in need 00:01:55.96\00:02:00.73 of a Savior. 00:02:00.77\00:02:01.82 It was His immediate, eager impulse to condescend to do 00:02:01.86\00:02:07.14 what ever it would take to save us, and so He did. 00:02:07.17\00:02:10.99 The incarnation was the first step in that condescension, 00:02:11.03\00:02:15.75 and then Jesus went all the way to the cross and the 00:02:15.78\00:02:19.56 language Paul uses here, is the plan of salvation, 00:02:19.59\00:02:23.89 purging of human sin, solving the same problem was 00:02:23.93\00:02:28.20 accomplished by the sacrifice of Himself. 00:02:28.23\00:02:32.73 Self-sacrifice, not the sacrifice a somewhat external 00:02:32.77\00:02:37.48 to God, not God in posing sacrifice on some third party 00:02:37.52\00:02:42.20 victim, but rather, God, knowing that we could not 00:02:42.24\00:02:45.57 accomplish our own salvation, that we could not pass 00:02:45.61\00:02:48.87 through the full ramifications of the sin problem, and survive, 00:02:48.91\00:02:53.06 God said, no, I will provide the sacrifice and that 00:02:53.09\00:02:57.25 sacrifice will be a self-sacrifice. 00:02:57.28\00:03:00.80 You know, it is amazing that when you look at the type 00:03:00.83\00:03:03.50 and the anti-type Ty, you realize what God is 00:03:03.54\00:03:06.15 saying to us here. 00:03:06.18\00:03:07.16 Basically He is saying that sin requires a sacrifice 00:03:07.19\00:03:10.10 because the nature of sin leads to death. 00:03:10.13\00:03:12.54 That is the natural consequence of sin. 00:03:12.57\00:03:14.73 There is no way sin can be remitted. 00:03:14.76\00:03:16.85 It says here in verse 22, without the sacrifice, 00:03:16.88\00:03:19.81 without the shedding of blood, because sin in and 00:03:19.84\00:03:22.74 of itself leads to death. 00:03:22.77\00:03:24.85 God has stepped in and taken responsibility for our sin, 00:03:24.88\00:03:28.29 thereby God has remitted our sins by tasting 00:03:28.33\00:03:31.37 death that we deserve. 00:03:31.41\00:03:32.62 What a powerful beautiful truth, we have in the 00:03:32.66\00:03:35.08 Gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:03:35.12\00:03:36.28 Paul is so emphatic about this. 00:03:36.32\00:03:39.06 I mean, He recognizes the weakness, not only of the 00:03:39.09\00:03:42.54 Hebrew mind, not only of the mind of the Israelites 00:03:42.57\00:03:46.28 the Jews to trust in temporal things and earthly things 00:03:46.32\00:03:49.91 and worldly things, in priests and buildings they can see 00:03:49.95\00:03:53.50 and feel and touch, but our weakness to do the same. 00:03:53.54\00:03:56.93 So in Hebrews 9 Ty, it like he goes over this 00:03:56.96\00:04:00.72 again and again and again. 00:04:00.76\00:04:02.88 I want you to understand that the worldly sanctuary was 00:04:02.91\00:04:05.44 a type of the heavenly. 00:04:05.47\00:04:06.44 That the worldly priesthood was a type of 00:04:06.45\00:04:08.12 of the heavenly priesthood. 00:04:08.16\00:04:09.13 That that was just something that was temporary 00:04:09.14\00:04:11.22 until the reality came in. 00:04:11.26\00:04:12.35 You need to go through a reformation. 00:04:12.39\00:04:14.23 You need to look to the heavenly. 00:04:14.26\00:04:16.04 You need to look to Christ, the earthly is imperfect, 00:04:16.07\00:04:18.70 it goes on and on and on, but Christ has made 00:04:18.73\00:04:20.73 a one-time sacrifice. 00:04:20.76\00:04:21.84 So look to Jesus as the One who can forgive you for all 00:04:21.88\00:04:25.80 eternity, for good. 00:04:25.84\00:04:26.93 This is not merely a Jewish problem, a problem 00:04:26.96\00:04:32.27 of the Hebrew people. 00:04:32.31\00:04:33.71 This is a human problem that he is dealing with. 00:04:33.75\00:04:36.27 He's not signaling out any group of people 00:04:36.31\00:04:39.09 within and indictment of criticism, he simply saying we 00:04:39.12\00:04:43.77 as human beings tend to be self dependent number one and 00:04:43.81\00:04:48.42 in that self dependence, 00:04:48.45\00:04:49.70 we tend to build up systems of religion around ourselves, 00:04:49.74\00:04:54.27 that we can depend on and so human beings down through 00:04:54.30\00:04:58.79 history have done just that. 00:04:58.83\00:05:00.80 And we do that today. 00:05:00.84\00:05:02.22 We turn our attention and our focus to human beings and 00:05:02.26\00:05:07.06 we imagine in our hearts that somehow the sin problem 00:05:07.10\00:05:11.95 can be solved through a religious experience, through 00:05:11.99\00:05:16.81 ceremonies, through a process of confession to 00:05:16.85\00:05:21.23 other human beings. 00:05:21.26\00:05:22.38 But Paul wants us to understand that we need to lift our 00:05:22.41\00:05:26.65 gaze, lift our attention on to the heavenly realities that 00:05:26.69\00:05:30.89 center in the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior 00:05:30.92\00:05:34.46 and find strength there. 00:05:34.49\00:05:35.52 This is absolutely vital, in fact, the very center verse of 00:05:35.56\00:05:40.29 the Bible, this is the verse, the chapter of the Bible I 00:05:40.32\00:05:43.98 should say that you come down to when you put an even number 00:05:44.01\00:05:48.10 of Bible chapters on the left and on the right is Psalms 118. 00:05:48.13\00:05:52.02 And when you get to Psalms 118, this is what you read in the 00:05:52.06\00:05:55.46 context of this truth that we are talking about in Hebrews 00:05:55.49\00:05:58.86 this is what you read. 00:05:58.89\00:06:00.14 Psalms 118, verse 8. 00:06:00.18\00:06:01.36 "It is better to trust in the Lord than to 00:06:01.40\00:06:05.64 put confidence in princes. " 00:06:05.68\00:06:07.63 This is, I said, the middle Chapter, it's the middle 00:06:07.66\00:06:10.41 verse of the Bible with an even number of verses to 00:06:10.45\00:06:13.16 the left and to the right. 00:06:13.20\00:06:14.17 "It is better to trust in the LORD than put 00:06:14.18\00:06:15.92 confidence in princes, confidence in man, it is better 00:06:15.96\00:06:18.47 to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. " 00:06:18.50\00:06:20.98 Psalm 118 verses 8 and 9. 00:06:21.02\00:06:23.70 Now think about this, Ty, because this is one of the 00:06:23.73\00:06:26.60 themes that Paul is developing here in Hebrews. 00:06:26.63\00:06:29.13 Hebrews is talking about the new covenant, knowing the 00:06:29.17\00:06:32.42 Lord personally, trusting the Lord personally, 00:06:32.46\00:06:34.21 looking to His priestly ministry, 00:06:34.25\00:06:35.45 look into His heavenly sanctuary, and having this 00:06:35.48\00:06:38.35 relationship with God, that trust in Him and not to 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.22 putting your trust in man, 00:06:41.26\00:06:42.37 whether it is another human being or 00:06:42.41\00:06:43.76 whether it is yourself. 00:06:43.80\00:06:44.90 Not putting our trust in human flesh. 00:06:44.94\00:06:47.83 There, is no help, there is no strength, there's 00:06:47.87\00:06:50.87 no way to resolve the problem the sin problem within ourselves 00:06:50.91\00:06:55.82 or through any kind of human systems. 00:06:55.85\00:06:58.42 That's why it is so vital that we, by faith, make the 00:06:58.46\00:07:03.69 transition of a central focus on Jesus and His heavenly 00:07:03.72\00:07:10.90 ministry in our behalf. 00:07:10.94\00:07:12.26 Absolutely, verse 27 and verse 28 week we could spend a 00:07:12.30\00:07:14.37 lot of time in these last couple of verses, friends. 00:07:14.41\00:07:16.45 But let's just read them before we do that. 00:07:16.48\00:07:18.63 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after 00:07:18.67\00:07:22.50 this the judgment: so Christ was once offered to bear 00:07:22.54\00:07:26.01 the sins of many;" or the many, "and unto them that look 00:07:26.05\00:07:29.49 for him shall he appear the second time 00:07:29.53\00:07:32.46 without sin unto salvation. " 00:07:32.50\00:07:35.57 What a beautiful beautiful powerful summary of everything 00:07:35.60\00:07:40.40 that Paul has talked about so far. 00:07:40.44\00:07:41.90 We are all pointed to die once, and then there is going 00:07:41.93\00:07:45.00 to be a judgment. 00:07:45.04\00:07:46.01 So we need to look to Christ, because Christ is the only 00:07:46.02\00:07:49.64 One as He appears the second time, who can bear our sins 00:07:49.68\00:07:53.27 and bring us salvation. 00:07:53.30\00:07:54.81 Christ was offered, verse 28. 00:07:54.84\00:07:57.45 He was offered once to bear the sins of the many, 00:07:57.49\00:08:02.34 to bear the sins of all according to John 3:16. 00:08:02.37\00:08:07.15 The most quoted verse in the Bible," God so loved the world". 00:08:07.18\00:08:11.65 Every member of the human family and this sacrifice was 00:08:11.69\00:08:15.92 made for all by the God of heaven. 00:08:15.96\00:08:19.73 You know, I want our viewers to say that. 00:08:19.76\00:08:22.05 I want you to say that right now to yourself. 00:08:22.08\00:08:24.33 I want you to say, "once for all" 00:08:24.37\00:08:26.34 Just say that, ONCE FOR ALL! 00:08:26.37\00:08:27.78 Say it again, a second time. 00:08:27.81\00:08:29.18 ONCE FOR ALL! 00:08:29.21\00:08:30.99 Said a third time, ONCE FOR ALL! 00:08:31.02\00:08:33.63 You need to understand that this sacrifice was made 00:08:33.66\00:08:36.31 one time, for all. 00:08:36.34\00:08:37.69 Understanding that truth, excepting this truth as it is 00:08:37.72\00:08:40.34 brought out in these verses is going to give you an 00:08:40.37\00:08:42.96 entirely different religious experience. 00:08:42.99\00:08:45.61 Or if you don't have a religious experience, it is 00:08:45.64\00:08:47.92 going to lift from you a weight of guilt. 00:08:47.95\00:08:50.30 The burden and the oppression of guilt that has kept 00:08:50.34\00:08:54.03 you in bondage and fear for all of your lives. 00:08:54.07\00:08:56.35 It's going to free you from all that and bring you 00:08:56.38\00:08:58.63 into a position before God of acceptance. 00:08:58.66\00:09:01.93 A position before God, where you are bathed in His 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.98 love and His compassion. 00:09:05.02\00:09:06.25 Where your heart and your mind can be free, and He can 00:09:06.28\00:09:09.52 fill you with His Spirit and you can go forth to 00:09:09.55\00:09:11.85 rejoicing in Him once and for all. 00:09:11.89\00:09:14.43 You have been saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:09:14.46\00:09:18.02 It's in that setting, is in that context, that the 00:09:18.06\00:09:21.27 second coming of Jesus Christ is brought to view here. 00:09:21.31\00:09:25.55 He says, those who have this new covenant experience, 00:09:25.58\00:09:29.78 those who put their trust in Jesus. 00:09:29.82\00:09:32.00 It says James that they eagerly wait for Him to appear. 00:09:32.03\00:09:36.66 They eagerly look forward to the second 00:09:36.70\00:09:39.55 coming of Jesus Christ. 00:09:39.59\00:09:40.56 They are looking for Him. 00:09:40.59\00:09:41.56 It's not with fear and trepidation. 00:09:41.57\00:09:43.56 It's not with hesitancy, but there is a peace. 00:09:43.59\00:09:47.56 There is a settled state of dependence on Jesus, 00:09:47.59\00:09:51.54 and a confidence that His salvation is complete, 00:09:51.57\00:09:54.87 that He has saved to the uttermost and that we can 00:09:54.90\00:09:58.17 absolutely depend on Him. 00:09:58.20\00:10:01.06 So we are eager. 00:10:01.09\00:10:02.06 I mean, when Jesus comes, we are going to turn our faces 00:10:02.10\00:10:05.40 heavenward "lo this is our God, we have waited for Him. 00:10:05.44\00:10:08.71 He will save us. " 00:10:08.74\00:10:10.05 And this is because we recognizing in this context, 00:10:10.09\00:10:12.78 the judgment. 00:10:12.81\00:10:13.78 And we know in the context of the judgment that none of 00:10:13.79\00:10:16.39 us can stand before a Holy and righteous God. 00:10:16.42\00:10:18.51 That our sins, overwhelm us. 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.27 Our guilt is a burden we cannot carry. 00:10:21.30\00:10:23.16 There is no way that we are going to make it through this 00:10:23.20\00:10:25.44 judgment when everything is assessed by a Holy God. 00:10:25.47\00:10:28.79 When we stand, and as it were, naked before Him, with all 00:10:28.82\00:10:32.32 of our deeds, and all of our motives open before Him. 00:10:32.36\00:10:35.24 There is no way that we can stand in His presence unless, 00:10:35.27\00:10:38.12 unless we have Jesus Christ as our righteousness. 00:10:38.16\00:10:41.91 So, yes, we look to Jesus, we look for Him, we are eager 00:10:41.95\00:10:44.95 for Him, when we accept Christ, we want Him to return. 00:10:44.98\00:10:47.86 And we are longing for Him to come to this earth and to 00:10:47.89\00:10:50.73 take us to be with Him for all eternity. 00:10:50.77\00:10:53.21 Paul said it says here that when Jesus comes the second 00:10:53.24\00:10:55.33 time, that He is going to appear without sin. 00:10:55.36\00:10:58.18 What is that all about? 00:10:58.21\00:11:00.77 Why and what sense does He appear without sin? 00:11:00.81\00:11:04.59 He is no longer bearing the sins of the men. 00:11:04.62\00:11:08.37 He is no longer bearing our sins, in other words, 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.56 there comes a time in the history of the world. 00:11:10.59\00:11:12.71 When everything comes to a close. 00:11:12.74\00:11:15.16 There comes a time when one everyone has chosen 00:11:15.19\00:11:16.88 for or against God. 00:11:16.91\00:11:18.24 When He is no longer needed to mediate, when He is no 00:11:18.27\00:11:21.00 longer needed to deal with sin. 00:11:21.04\00:11:23.53 He is as it were taken those sins and completely 00:11:23.56\00:11:26.45 annihilating and blotting them out. 00:11:26.48\00:11:29.18 There is no more remembrance of them. 00:11:29.22\00:11:31.85 He comes Holy, pure and undefiled, and we are changed in 00:11:31.89\00:11:35.38 a moment in the twinkling of an eye and sin is no more. 00:11:35.41\00:11:38.87 That is a glorious thought that the sin problem is 00:11:38.91\00:11:42.44 completely resolved at this point. 00:11:42.48\00:11:44.40 That it will not raise its ugly head ever again, in the 00:11:44.44\00:11:48.19 history of eternity future. 00:11:48.23\00:11:49.95 Jesus has fully, completely and finally dealt 00:11:49.98\00:11:54.09 with the sin problem. 00:11:54.12\00:11:55.68 He returns the second time, we enter into that final phase 00:11:55.71\00:12:00.27 of our relationship with Him. 00:12:00.30\00:12:02.48 And so shall we ever be with the Lord. 00:12:02.52\00:12:05.65 So let's summarize this Ty. 00:12:05.68\00:12:07.01 We look at Hebrews Chapter 9, and we see that Paul 00:12:07.05\00:12:09.87 has been transitioning us into this greater understanding 00:12:09.91\00:12:15.28 of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:12:15.32\00:12:17.13 The earthly was a type, let's get our eyes off the type. 00:12:17.17\00:12:20.06 You know the whole world now, many of us are focused on 00:12:20.10\00:12:22.56 the Middle East, we're focused on the Jews, we're focused 00:12:22.59\00:12:25.02 on a literal temple there, that's not where our 00:12:25.05\00:12:27.24 focus needs to be friends. 00:12:27.27\00:12:28.68 Our focus needs to be on the heavenly, 00:12:28.71\00:12:30.32 on the true type, that temple is not significant, even if it was 00:12:30.35\00:12:34.05 rebuilt not significant. 00:12:34.08\00:12:35.37 It is the heavenly temple, is the heavenly priesthood 00:12:35.41\00:12:37.86 that's where our focus needs to be, Why? 00:12:37.90\00:12:39.66 Because that earthly type could never cleanse us from sin, 00:12:39.70\00:12:42.95 the earthly sacrifices of animals could never cleanse the 00:12:42.99\00:12:46.21 conscious from sin. 00:12:46.24\00:12:47.23 But Jesus has made a one-time sacrifice for all, once for 00:12:47.27\00:12:50.88 all and that sacrifice is efficient for each one of us. 00:12:50.91\00:12:54.49 Let's get our minds to the heavenly. 00:12:54.53\00:12:56.15 That is where God wants us to be as we transition there. 00:12:56.18\00:12:59.06 We are going to find ourselves entering into an experience 00:12:59.09\00:13:02.25 that we've never had before, free from guilt, free from 00:13:02.28\00:13:05.37 the burden of condemnation and filled with joy and the love 00:13:05.40\00:13:08.30 of Christ, and with our hearts filled with a sense of the 00:13:08.34\00:13:11.65 fact that He sacrificed Himself for us. 00:13:11.69\00:13:14.54 That will according to the Gospel, the teaching of the 00:13:14.58\00:13:18.44 Gospel in the New Testament, well, arose within us, a 00:13:18.48\00:13:22.31 responsive love for God. 00:13:22.34\00:13:23.72 If our focus is on Jesus and His sacrifice on our 00:13:23.76\00:13:27.60 behalf, we will experience an internal empowering, an 00:13:27.63\00:13:32.59 internal motivation to do those things that please God. 00:13:34.43\00:13:36.24 His law will be established in our hearts, not by 00:13:36.28\00:13:39.79 compulsion, but because we willingly, eagerly want to 00:13:39.82\00:13:43.30 serve and please God. 00:13:43.33\00:13:44.65 It's a great experience and the book of Hebrews continues 00:13:44.68\00:13:47.76 to unfold it. 00:13:47.80\00:13:48.77 So we are looking forward to studying with you 00:13:48.78\00:13:50.35 again in the future. 00:13:50.40\00:13:51.42
