Welcome friends to Books of the Book 00:00:20.98\00:00:22.84 I'm Ty Gibson and with me is my co-host James Rafferty. 00:00:22.87\00:00:25.88 We are presently engaged in a study of the 00:00:25.92\00:00:28.54 book of Hebrews. 00:00:28.57\00:00:29.54 So we would like to encourage you to get a Bible, 00:00:29.55\00:00:31.50 and pull up a chair, a get comfortable, and open 00:00:31.53\00:00:33.57 to Hebrews Chapter 9. 00:00:33.61\00:00:35.26 Hebrews Chapter 9. 00:00:35.30\00:00:36.88 We left off with Hebrews 8 we were talking about the 00:00:36.92\00:00:38.85 new covenant experience. 00:00:38.88\00:00:39.85 Hebrews 9 transitions smoothly into relational experience 00:00:39.86\00:00:44.06 into the reality of the types of the earthly sanctuary. 00:00:44.10\00:00:48.23 The first covenant is mentioned in verse 1 of Chapter 9, 00:00:48.26\00:00:52.20 and then Paul is going to inform us that first covenant 00:00:52.23\00:00:56.52 was all structured around the first tabernacle, James. 00:00:56.56\00:01:00.81 The first sanctuary, the earthly temple system, 00:01:00.85\00:01:04.42 was the center of the old covenant experience. 00:01:04.46\00:01:07.89 This is called the worldly sanctuary in verse 1, 00:01:07.93\00:01:11.33 of Hebrews Chapter 9. 00:01:11.36\00:01:12.35 Now, friends, we have to understand that this is one 00:01:12.39\00:01:15.23 of the main emphasis of Paul's writing 00:01:15.27\00:01:17.62 the book of Hebrews. 00:01:17.65\00:01:18.62 He is seeking to transition the Hebrew thinkers, the 00:01:18.64\00:01:22.45 Israelites from earthly types to heavenly realities. 00:01:22.49\00:01:25.71 From the worldly sanctuary service, with the human 00:01:25.74\00:01:29.30 priest to the heavenly sanctuary with the priesthood, 00:01:29.33\00:01:32.86 the Melchizedek priesthood, the Royal priesthood 00:01:32.89\00:01:35.30 of Jesus Christ. 00:01:35.33\00:01:36.30 So, in verse 2, of Chapter 9 of Hebrews, for a 00:01:36.32\00:01:40.25 tabernacle was prepared. 00:01:40.29\00:01:42.30 He is talking about the tabernacle in the wilderness 00:01:42.34\00:01:45.68 that was constructed by Moses and the Jews, 00:01:45.71\00:01:49.00 in that period of history. 00:01:49.04\00:01:51.01 And then he just explains the basic parts of that 00:01:51.04\00:01:55.66 particular sanctuary service. 00:01:55.69\00:01:57.65 He names the courtyard. 00:01:57.69\00:01:59.58 He names the Holy Place. 00:01:59.62\00:02:01.48 He names the Most Holy Place. 00:02:01.52\00:02:02.58 He names the pieces of furniture. 00:02:02.62\00:02:04.70 He is basically just reminding the reader that this 00:02:04.73\00:02:08.86 whole temple service. 00:02:08.90\00:02:10.02 This is what it looked like, here's the 00:02:10.05\00:02:11.95 topical view of it. 00:02:11.99\00:02:12.99 This is what we were dealing with at that time. 00:02:13.03\00:02:15.64 Now he's saying, let's make the transition. 00:02:15.68\00:02:18.22 Let's move from the earthly temple service, to the 00:02:18.26\00:02:22.50 heavenly sanctuary ministry of Jesus, our better, 00:02:22.53\00:02:26.74 our superior High Priest. 00:02:26.77\00:02:28.65 In fact, he says right here in verse 8, of Chapter 9, 00:02:28.69\00:02:31.91 He said, the Holy Ghost signifying that the way into the 00:02:31.94\00:02:35.13 holiest of all. 00:02:35.17\00:02:36.14 That's for the King James says. 00:02:36.15\00:02:37.16 This is actually talking about the heavenly sanctuary 00:02:37.19\00:02:39.98 the heavenly places. 00:02:40.01\00:02:41.20 The Holy Place, Most Holy Place. 00:02:41.24\00:02:42.34 This is something that Paul is not dealing with directly. 00:02:42.38\00:02:45.20 In other words, it is not an issue for Paul whether Jesus 00:02:45.23\00:02:48.02 is going in the Holy Place or the Most Holy Place. 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.19 We understand from the earthly types, the ministry of the 00:02:50.23\00:02:53.62 priest began in the Holy Place. 00:02:53.65\00:02:55.06 Actually, it began in the courtyard, 00:02:55.10\00:02:56.40 and we recognize, in the book of Hebrews, 00:02:56.43\00:02:58.69 that the courtyard represents the cross. 00:02:58.73\00:03:00.92 That phase has already taken place at Calvary. 00:03:00.95\00:03:03.78 But Jesus, when He went to heaven, began 00:03:03.82\00:03:05.69 ministry in the Holy Place, but Paul here is not 00:03:05.72\00:03:08.39 dealing with those issues. 00:03:08.43\00:03:09.67 What he is focusing on primarily, is going from the 00:03:09.70\00:03:12.69 earthly to the heavenly. 00:03:12.72\00:03:13.99 Once we get to the heavenly, we begin in the Holy Place, 00:03:14.03\00:03:16.45 but the main point is earthly to heavenly. 00:03:16.49\00:03:19.48 While the earthly is still standing, he is saying, 00:03:19.52\00:03:22.16 the Holy Spirit is signifying in verse 8, there is 00:03:22.19\00:03:24.80 no reason for us to go to the heavenly. 00:03:24.83\00:03:27.41 The heavenly is being eclipsed by the earthly or a 00:03:27.44\00:03:29.86 counterfeit of the earthly, we must understand that the 00:03:29.90\00:03:33.53 earthly has done with its types and its figures, with what 00:03:33.57\00:03:37.17 it pointed to once we see the reality of Jesus Christ 00:03:37.21\00:03:39.42 in the heavenly. 00:03:39.46\00:03:40.43 In a historic context here, we need to recognize 00:03:40.44\00:03:43.39 that this was a monumental shift for these people, 00:03:43.43\00:03:46.41 at this time. 00:03:46.45\00:03:47.71 They had worship in this particular system for hundreds 00:03:47.75\00:03:51.24 of years, generation after generation. 00:03:51.28\00:03:53.55 And now all of a sudden Jesus enters human history 00:03:53.58\00:03:57.69 and the entire system, that they had come to depend on, 00:03:57.73\00:04:01.64 was passing away. 00:04:01.67\00:04:03.49 It was being annulled, something new was being 00:04:03.52\00:04:06.33 put in its place. 00:04:06.36\00:04:07.67 When we come down to verses 9 and 10 James, 00:04:07.71\00:04:10.13 it says there that system was symbolic for the time, 00:04:10.16\00:04:14.16 then present, and then it says verse 10, that this 00:04:14.19\00:04:18.12 was only until the time of reformation or the time, when 00:04:18.15\00:04:22.70 this transition, when this revolution would take place. 00:04:22.73\00:04:27.24 And Jesus was the epicenter of that change. 00:04:27.28\00:04:31.32 It's no wonder, that He was crucified. 00:04:31.35\00:04:33.90 They didn't discern that that entire system, was as it 00:04:33.93\00:04:37.54 says here in verse 9, symbolic. 00:04:37.58\00:04:39.35 It pointed to realities, it was not a reality in itself. 00:04:39.39\00:04:43.35 It was very difficult for the Israelites, 00:04:43.39\00:04:45.54 for the Jews of Christ time. 00:04:45.58\00:04:46.90 It was very difficult for them to accept the idea that 00:04:46.93\00:04:50.45 the temple, the place that they put all their hopes in, 00:04:50.49\00:04:53.72 the place that they looked to as the Most Sacred Place 00:04:53.76\00:04:56.96 in their history in relation to their religion. 00:04:56.99\00:04:59.87 In relation to their connection with God, 00:04:59.90\00:05:02.75 was going to be wiped away. 00:05:02.78\00:05:03.92 It was going to be laid aside, and all of that was going 00:05:03.95\00:05:07.63 to be fulfilled in Christ. 00:05:07.67\00:05:08.88 He was going to become the focus and the transitional 00:05:08.91\00:05:12.85 point of a new system that was going to take us into the 00:05:12.89\00:05:16.79 heavenly, into the presence of God Himself. 00:05:16.82\00:05:19.72 In fact Paul brings this out in Chapter 8. 00:05:19.76\00:05:22.59 He says that Jesus Christ is the minister of the true 00:05:22.63\00:05:25.26 sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord 00:05:25.29\00:05:27.89 pitched and not man. 00:05:27.92\00:05:29.33 The verse that I really want to focus in on here, 00:05:29.37\00:05:33.49 for just a moment James, is verse 11. 00:05:33.52\00:05:36.18 "Christ came as a high priest of good things to come. " 00:05:36.21\00:05:39.89 What is being dealt with here? 00:05:39.92\00:05:42.03 What is Paul, bringing to our, what are the good 00:05:42.07\00:05:44.18 things to come? 00:05:44.21\00:05:45.87 When you look at it in the context, verse 11 is talking 00:05:45.90\00:05:48.75 about the good things to come in relation to a greater 00:05:48.78\00:05:51.61 and more perfect tabernacle, that is the sanctuary. 00:05:51.64\00:05:54.39 In that context, also, that's not to say of this building. 00:05:54.43\00:05:58.51 verse 12, "neither by the blood of goats and calves but 00:05:58.55\00:06:02.67 by his own blood, he entered once into the Holy Place. " 00:06:02.71\00:06:06.17 And that is the heavenly sanctuary, "having obtained 00:06:06.20\00:06:09.62 eternal redemption for us". 00:06:09.66\00:06:12.03 Good things to come friends, are this wonderful heavenly 00:06:12.06\00:06:16.24 sanctuary service that incorporates Christ as our one 00:06:16.27\00:06:20.42 time sacrifice once and for all as the One who is 00:06:20.45\00:06:23.90 obtained eternal redemption for us this is the context 00:06:23.93\00:06:27.36 of the Reformation that must take place in the minds and 00:06:27.39\00:06:30.78 hearts of millions of people even today. 00:06:30.81\00:06:33.22 But I want to say this carefully, because Ty. 00:06:33.26\00:06:35.48 I was raised in a Christian home, raised in a home that 00:06:35.52\00:06:38.27 taught me to believe in God, but it was a home that 00:06:38.31\00:06:41.02 pointed me to earthly priests. 00:06:41.06\00:06:42.47 To earthly intercession, to confessing to human beings 00:06:42.50\00:06:46.00 and not to the heavenly priesthood of Jesus Christ in 00:06:46.04\00:06:49.51 the heavenly sanctuary where He has made a 00:06:49.54\00:06:52.02 one time sacrifice. 00:06:52.05\00:06:53.43 Not an ongoing sacrifice, a one-time sacrifice 00:06:53.47\00:06:56.30 for all humanity. 00:06:56.34\00:06:57.71 Good things to come are inclusive here of the fact in 00:06:57.75\00:07:02.15 verse 12 that Jesus has obtained eternal redemption. 00:07:02.18\00:07:06.40 It's important that we recognize here that this is past 00:07:06.44\00:07:10.62 tense language. 00:07:10.66\00:07:11.63 Jesus is not in the process of accomplishing something. 00:07:11.64\00:07:15.74 All one level. 00:07:15.78\00:07:16.75 Jesus purged our sins in the one act of His sacrifice at 00:07:16.76\00:07:21.84 Calvary and thus obtained eternal redemption for us. 00:07:21.87\00:07:26.95 It is a done deal is an accomplished victory, 00:07:26.98\00:07:30.22 it is a fact of history that we have embodied in 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.45 the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:07:33.49\00:07:34.74 And that is why Paul is so urgent about moving us 00:07:34.77\00:07:38.11 into the understanding of this truth, because the 00:07:38.15\00:07:40.94 only thing that remains now is that we will see a 00:07:40.98\00:07:43.74 one-time sacrifice and accept it 00:07:43.78\00:07:46.37 appropriate as our own. 00:07:46.40\00:07:48.51 In other words, there is nothing else that is needed 00:07:48.54\00:07:52.12 as far as sacrifice for sins is concerned. 00:07:52.15\00:07:54.13 There is nothing we can add to the sacrificial atonement 00:07:54.16\00:07:57.73 that has been made for us, for everyone by Jesus Christ. 00:07:57.76\00:08:01.29 There is no sin that can be committed, or has been 00:08:01.33\00:08:04.09 committed by anyone that has not already been atoned 00:08:04.12\00:08:06.85 for by Jesus Christ. 00:08:06.88\00:08:08.90 But there is a need for us to understand, to allow 00:08:08.93\00:08:13.60 this truth to become a reality in our lives. 00:08:13.63\00:08:15.99 It is for us to let go of the earthly, for us to let 00:08:16.03\00:08:18.72 go of the worldly, for us to make this transition. 00:08:18.76\00:08:21.79 This reformation, if you will Ty, this reformation 00:08:21.83\00:08:24.83 from the old to the new. 00:08:24.86\00:08:26.44 So the fact that eternal redemption is a completed fact, 00:08:26.48\00:08:30.75 in the person of Jesus Christ, doesn't necessarily mean 00:08:30.78\00:08:34.90 that it is a completed fact in my personal experience. 00:08:34.93\00:08:38.36 This is where the faith factor comes in, which is all 00:08:38.39\00:08:41.79 through the book of Hebrews. 00:08:41.82\00:08:43.08 The apostle Paul, over and over again, is calling upon us 00:08:43.12\00:08:47.69 to enter into these accomplished facts in Jesus Christ. 00:08:47.73\00:08:53.24 To obtain eternal redemption, in Himself is preparatory 00:08:53.28\00:08:58.69 to each of us obtaining eternal redemption experientially. 00:08:58.73\00:09:03.07 Absolutely, and now verse 15 brings us to another idea 00:09:03.10\00:09:06.40 another point that is very important for the Gospel. 00:09:06.43\00:09:09.69 Because when we talk about "once and for all". 00:09:09.73\00:09:11.42 We're not just talking about New Testament believers. 00:09:11.46\00:09:14.83 He says here in verse 15, "and for this cause, he is the 00:09:14.87\00:09:18.10 mediator of the New Testament that by means of death", 00:09:18.14\00:09:21.35 His death, for the redemption of transgressions that were 00:09:21.38\00:09:24.97 under the first testament that which they which are called 00:09:25.01\00:09:28.56 might received the promise of eternal inheritance. " 00:09:28.59\00:09:30.60 In other words, all of God's people in the Old Testament 00:09:30.64\00:09:32.80 come under this new covenant promise. 00:09:32.83\00:09:34.39 All those people were going to be saved in the Old 00:09:34.42\00:09:36.57 Testament, are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:09:36.60\00:09:39.33 They looked forward to the Lamb, who would take away 00:09:39.36\00:09:42.25 the sins of the world, they look back to the "Lamb who 00:09:42.29\00:09:45.14 takes away the sin of the world". 00:09:45.17\00:09:46.46 But both the Old Testament faithful and the New Testament 00:09:46.50\00:09:50.03 faithful look to the cross and come together at the cross, 00:09:50.06\00:09:53.55 according to Hebrews Chapter 8, and verse 15. 00:09:53.59\00:09:57.02 So there an objective reality, in the person of 00:09:57.05\00:10:00.25 Jesus Christ, and then there is the subjective 00:10:00.29\00:10:03.41 experience of God's people, of each of us as individuals. 00:10:03.45\00:10:07.82 There is what He has done in His humanity. 00:10:07.86\00:10:11.16 Having moved through the entire human experience, 00:10:11.20\00:10:14.68 conquering sin, dying on the cross, raising from the dead, 00:10:14.71\00:10:19.32 ascending to the right hand of the throne of the 00:10:19.35\00:10:21.93 Majesty in the heavens. 00:10:21.97\00:10:23.00 Paul says, and then there's you, there's me. 00:10:23.03\00:10:26.17 There is each individual who is called upon in the book 00:10:26.21\00:10:30.09 of Hebrews, to become a partaker of the new covenant. 00:10:30.12\00:10:34.57 And there is nothing more glorious James, then to have a 00:10:34.60\00:10:39.02 spiritual experience with God. 00:10:39.05\00:10:41.23 That is real, that is vital, that is actual. 00:10:41.26\00:10:44.91 That is not merely a theory or a series of legal ideas 00:10:44.95\00:10:50.22 that we have about something that was done merely 00:10:50.26\00:10:52.39 in a historic sense. 00:10:52.42\00:10:53.65 Now, we don't want to minimize the historical aspect, 00:10:53.69\00:10:56.23 because what was accomplished in Jesus, is as it 00:10:56.26\00:10:59.57 says here, the obtaining of eternal redemption for us. 00:10:59.61\00:11:03.65 It was all done in Him. 00:11:03.69\00:11:04.80 But praise God that it was an experience in Him that 00:11:04.84\00:11:10.05 invites us to be partakers of that same experience. 00:11:10.09\00:11:13.48 Amen and its partakers of an experience that He has given 00:11:13.52\00:11:17.39 to us as a gift. 00:11:17.42\00:11:18.39 In other words, we do not merit salvation by partaking 00:11:18.40\00:11:21.59 of that gift. 00:11:21.63\00:11:22.60 We simply acknowledge the truth of the salvation that 00:11:22.61\00:11:25.38 has been accomplished for us it becomes a reality in our 00:11:25.42\00:11:28.21 lives, we take hold of it. 00:11:28.25\00:11:29.87 Faith does the not make facts, faith takes hold of the 00:11:29.90\00:11:33.02 facts and acknowledges the facts for our salvation 00:11:33.06\00:11:36.15 in Jesus Christ. 00:11:36.18\00:11:37.71 Now notice what Paul does here is the moves on in 00:11:37.74\00:11:40.00 Hebrews 8 verses 16 and onward. 00:11:40.04\00:11:42.65 For where a testament is, there must also, of necessity, 00:11:42.69\00:11:47.52 be the death of the Testator. 00:11:47.55\00:11:49.48 Now let's pause there for just a second because we know 00:11:49.52\00:11:52.56 this Testament, this New Testament is God's testament, 00:11:52.60\00:11:55.61 the new covenant. 00:11:55.64\00:11:56.74 The New Testament is authored by God, and it says here 00:11:56.77\00:11:59.35 that if this New Testament is going to be put into effect, 00:11:59.39\00:12:01.93 the Testator must die. 00:12:01.97\00:12:04.76 We talked about this earlier Ty, and this is difficult 00:12:04.79\00:12:07.73 for us to grasp at times, to wrap our minds around, but 00:12:07.76\00:12:10.66 the truth of the matter is that God is immortal. 00:12:10.70\00:12:13.65 God cannot die. 00:12:13.69\00:12:14.66 And so in order for God the Testator of the New Testament, 00:12:14.67\00:12:17.85 to die, He became a man. 00:12:17.89\00:12:19.88 He came to us in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:12:19.91\00:12:22.48 He put on mortality over His immortality so that He could 00:12:22.51\00:12:26.94 experience death for all of us. 00:12:26.97\00:12:28.75 What a beautiful picture of God's love. 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.77 It's incredible James, that Jesus, God the Creator, 00:12:30.80\00:12:34.60 became a human being, according to the book of Hebrews 00:12:34.63\00:12:38.98 as the prerequisite, the set of conditions in which God 00:12:39.01\00:12:43.33 could experience the reality of our sin and die 00:12:43.36\00:12:48.11 in our place at Calvary. 00:12:48.15\00:12:50.68 It's amazing, on the one hand, that He would even be 00:12:50.71\00:12:53.99 willing to experience that condescension, to do 00:12:54.02\00:12:57.26 that, to suffer in that way for us. 00:12:57.30\00:12:59.56 But it is vital that we recognize that it is God, 00:12:59.59\00:13:03.01 that is doing this. 00:13:03.04\00:13:04.09 It is God that is experiencing this sacrifice 00:13:04.13\00:13:07.02 and willingly doing so. 00:13:07.05\00:13:08.91 Not because He is compelled to do so, but purely, 00:13:08.95\00:13:12.05 one-hundred percent out of the abundance of His love 00:13:12.09\00:13:15.16 for each one of us. 00:13:15.19\00:13:17.04 As we continue in Hebrews Chapter 9, we are going to 00:13:17.07\00:13:20.56 explore additional aspects of this sacrifice and 00:13:20.59\00:13:23.80 emphasize what it is that Paul is bringing to our 00:13:23.83\00:13:27.01 attention here, so please stay with us. 00:13:27.04\00:13:28.71 Don't go away, we will be right back! 00:13:28.75\00:13:30.39
