Welcome back friends to our study in the book of Hebrews 00:00:01.98\00:00:03.43 We are in Hebrews Chapter 8 and we are focusing on the 00:00:03.46\00:00:07.11 new covenant, the new experience that God wants 00:00:07.14\00:00:09.15 us to have with Him. 00:00:09.19\00:00:10.28 As we pointed out before, the break there are a number 00:00:10.31\00:00:13.23 of facets to the new covenant and each one of them needs to 00:00:13.26\00:00:16.87 be understood as we move through Chapter 8 verses 10-13. 00:00:16.90\00:00:22.36 First of all, we see here James, that the covenant involves a 00:00:22.39\00:00:26.53 promise of God, that He will write His law in our hearts, 00:00:26.56\00:00:31.64 in our minds, God will do this. 00:00:31.67\00:00:35.04 How is it that God is going to bring to pass? 00:00:35.07\00:00:37.97 How is it that God is going to be the One who fulfills the law 00:00:38.00\00:00:41.41 or writes it in us? 00:00:41.44\00:00:42.65 You know this is really powerful Ty, because this is just a 00:00:42.68\00:00:45.02 continuation of the theme that Paul has been building 00:00:45.06\00:00:47.51 The immutable promises of God. 00:00:47.54\00:00:49.62 One of those immutable promises that God has 00:00:49.65\00:00:52.69 made to us is His Word. 00:00:52.73\00:00:54.21 He has established His word as the power and authority 00:00:54.24\00:00:57.62 by which He can realize, or make real in our lives. 00:00:57.65\00:01:01.68 Everything He is giving to us in His promises 00:01:01.71\00:01:03.73 That He has promised to us. 00:01:03.76\00:01:04.73 So the Word is powerful, the oath of God is powerful, 00:01:04.74\00:01:07.33 and it is through His word that He establishes 00:01:07.36\00:01:10.42 His law in our hearts. 00:01:10.45\00:01:12.39 It is through the power, the grace, the goodness of God 00:01:12.42\00:01:15.36 that comes through His word that he establishes the law 00:01:15.39\00:01:17.92 in our hearts and in our minds. 00:01:17.95\00:01:19.13 I will put My law in your mind, I will write it on your heart. 00:01:19.16\00:01:24.00 That's a powerful promise! 00:01:24.03\00:01:25.30 Now it is important that we understand that this promise 00:01:25.33\00:01:28.58 is throughout Scripture. 00:01:28.61\00:01:30.17 It's just not a promise that comes to us in the 00:01:30.20\00:01:34.36 New Testament period. 00:01:34.40\00:01:35.66 Actually this is echoing from Chapter 36 of Ezekiel where 00:01:35.69\00:01:41.87 similar language is used. 00:01:41.91\00:01:43.31 It's says in Chapter 36 of Ezekiel verses 26 and 27. 00:01:43.34\00:01:47.89 "I will give you a new heart and I will put a new Spirit 00:01:47.92\00:01:53.20 within you, I will take away the heart of stone 00:01:53.23\00:01:56.50 out of your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh. " 00:01:56.53\00:02:00.19 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in 00:02:00.22\00:02:03.97 My statutes and you will keep My judgments and do them. " 00:02:04.00\00:02:07.71 I love the fact that God says here, I'm going to cause you, 00:02:07.74\00:02:12.86 I'm not going to force you. 00:02:12.89\00:02:14.53 I'm not going to manipulate you, I'm not going to bare 00:02:14.56\00:02:18.75 over you with any kind of dominance, rather I am going 00:02:18.79\00:02:22.97 to work from the inside out. 00:02:23.01\00:02:25.12 I'm going to work on the inside of your being, give you a new 00:02:25.16\00:02:29.19 heart, a new Spirit, a new attitude, Paul says in Chapter 2 00:02:29.22\00:02:33.51 of Philippians, like this mind or this attitude to be in you. 00:02:33.54\00:02:36.57 Which was also in Christ Jesus. 00:02:36.60\00:02:39.30 God is going to work on the inside of our hearts 00:02:39.33\00:02:42.51 as a result of that internal change there is going to be 00:02:42.54\00:02:47.26 an external change, I will cause you to walk in my statutes, 00:02:47.30\00:02:52.02 and in My law. 00:02:52.05\00:02:54.16 God's the cause, but He doing it through us 00:02:54.19\00:02:56.82 with our cooperation. 00:02:56.85\00:02:58.08 Now I like the latter part of this verse, too, verse 10 says, 00:02:58.11\00:03:00.71 "And I will be to them a God and they shall be to Me a people. " 00:03:00.74\00:03:04.10 That is talking about relationship. 00:03:04.13\00:03:06.14 This is the theme we have been building on as we've been 00:03:06.17\00:03:08.84 moving through the book of Hebrews, relationship. 00:03:08.87\00:03:11.26 It began in Chapter 1, God has spoken to us and He speaks to us 00:03:11.29\00:03:15.36 through the Son, and he's continued this theme 00:03:15.39\00:03:17.65 all the way through. Why? 00:03:17.68\00:03:19.07 Cause right here in Hebrews 8, we are kind of coming to a 00:03:19.10\00:03:22.19 Zenith, if you will, a summary ad culmination of the point 00:03:22.22\00:03:26.74 that Paul is trying to make. 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.09 God wants a relationship with His people. 00:03:28.12\00:03:31.35 I want to be your God and I want you to be My people. 00:03:31.38\00:03:34.52 He created us, in the beginning, in His image, and He had that 00:03:34.55\00:03:38.48 relationship with us from day number 1. 00:03:38.51\00:03:40.38 Sin interrupted this relationship. 00:03:40.41\00:03:42.23 God wants to restore the relationship. 00:03:42.27\00:03:44.49 In other words, the new covenant is not just about I am going to 00:03:44.52\00:03:47.93 put the law in their hearts and they are obey Me and they 00:03:47.97\00:03:50.89 are going to keep the Commandments. 00:03:50.92\00:03:52.03 Not that dryness that we see sometimes in religionaity. 00:03:52.06\00:03:55.52 It's about experience, it's about love, because the law 00:03:55.56\00:03:59.01 is based on love. 00:03:59.05\00:04:00.03 It's about God and us coming together in a relationship 00:04:00.07\00:04:03.38 that honors and respects one another, and falls in love 00:04:03.41\00:04:06.83 with one another and thereby we find ourselves having 00:04:06.87\00:04:10.25 His law in our hearts and minds. 00:04:10.28\00:04:11.46 Praise the Lord, AMEN! 00:04:11.50\00:04:12.47 That's why we are told James, in Romans 13:10, that love is 00:04:12.50\00:04:17.51 the fulfillment of the law. 00:04:17.54\00:04:18.57 We're not talking here about a mere code of ethics, 00:04:18.60\00:04:21.83 that we obey with a grudging unwilling heart, 00:04:21.86\00:04:25.42 but rather it's an experience that we see reflected 00:04:25.45\00:04:28.30 in the experience of the Lord Jesus Christ when He said, 00:04:28.33\00:04:31.51 "I do always those things that please God. " 00:04:31.54\00:04:34.95 There is this sense, this tone in Jesus in which He longs 00:04:34.98\00:04:41.30 to please the Father. 00:04:41.33\00:04:42.30 He's not merely obeying as a legalistic requirement in 00:04:42.31\00:04:45.51 order to get on the good side of an angry God, but rather 00:04:45.54\00:04:49.29 what Jesus is bringing to us in the new covenant is a 00:04:49.33\00:04:53.04 a change of heart, a change of motive, a change of attitude, 00:04:53.07\00:04:55.99 a change of perception of God's character such that we begin 00:04:56.02\00:04:59.96 to get inclined toward God. 00:04:59.99\00:05:01.51 to love what God loves, to hate what God hates, 00:05:01.54\00:05:04.71 our tastes literally. 00:05:04.75\00:05:07.37 Our spiritual tastes, our moral tastes is changed 00:05:07.40\00:05:10.44 by this internal transformation. 00:05:10.47\00:05:12.74 So this idea that there is a difference between love and law. 00:05:12.77\00:05:16.06 That law is Old Testament legalism and what we need 00:05:16.09\00:05:19.79 today is love, is not Biblical. 00:05:19.82\00:05:21.11 It's a false dichotomy. 00:05:21.14\00:05:22.48 Yeah, all through the New Testament we find that the 00:05:22.51\00:05:25.19 essence, the basis of love, is the law, 00:05:25.22\00:05:28.04 or law of love, it's the same. 00:05:28.08\00:05:29.40 In other words, not just in Romans but in Galatians Paul 00:05:29.44\00:05:32.30 says love is the fulfilling of the law. 00:05:32.33\00:05:33.95 Jesus was asked once about which commandment was most important. 00:05:33.98\00:05:37.61 And Jesus said, the first commandment, the most important 00:05:37.64\00:05:40.78 commandment is to love God. 00:05:40.82\00:05:42.37 The commandment, the law, is to love God with all your heart, 00:05:42.40\00:05:45.45 mind and soul, and the second is just like it, 00:05:45.48\00:05:47.28 love your neighbor, law, love your neighbor as yourself. 00:05:47.31\00:05:51.83 When you look at the commandments you see 00:05:51.86\00:05:53.33 essence of love. 00:05:53.36\00:05:55.00 Love and law go together. 00:05:55.03\00:05:57.16 This is the Biblical idea of love and law James. 00:05:57.19\00:06:00.67 Our popular culture, if you listen to the radio on any given 00:06:00.70\00:06:03.76 day, or you pick up a popular music CD you are definitely 00:06:03.79\00:06:06.69 going to get to hear the word love a lot. 00:06:06.72\00:06:07.75 In fact I saw one magazine article that said that they did 00:06:07.78\00:06:12.19 a search on all the modern popular music, and they found 00:06:12.22\00:06:15.22 that the most frequently used word, in popular music, is love. 00:06:15.25\00:06:20.03 And they said the second most frequently used word, is baby. 00:06:20.06\00:06:25.79 As in baby I love you. 00:06:25.82\00:06:27.55 And the third most frequently used word, in popular music, 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.72 is yeah, as in Oh Yeah! 00:06:30.75\00:06:32.47 So baby I love you Oh Yeah! 00:06:32.50\00:06:34.72 But that's track one on any given CD, but track two or three 00:06:34.75\00:06:39.03 I don't love you baby anymore, because I've moved onto another 00:06:39.06\00:06:42.57 baby, but, that has been more, you know, attractive than you 00:06:42.60\00:06:46.10 that I love more now. 00:06:46.14\00:06:47.11 And so it looks like modern the modern perception of love 00:06:47.12\00:06:50.94 is that love really is self-satisfaction. 00:06:50.97\00:06:54.32 But! The Biblical idea of love, is that love is self-sacrifice. 00:06:54.35\00:06:59.32 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 verses 5-7 says that love is 00:06:59.36\00:07:04.98 not self-seeking, or as King James version renders it, that 00:07:05.01\00:07:09.43 "Love seeketh not it's own. " 00:07:09.46\00:07:12.38 And if love is not seeking it's own, if love is not self-seeking 00:07:12.41\00:07:16.09 stated in a positive sense, that means that 00:07:16.12\00:07:19.23 love is other-centered, it is self-giving. 00:07:19.26\00:07:22.37 That is the Biblical idea of love. 00:07:22.40\00:07:25.36 That's the essence of love. 00:07:25.39\00:07:26.36 Now we've got law in the new covenant experience. 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.75 We've got gospel in the new covenant experience. 00:07:28.78\00:07:31.77 We've got power in the new covenant experience. 00:07:31.80\00:07:33.51 We've got relationship in the new covenant experience. 00:07:33.54\00:07:35.20 We've got anointing in the new covenant experience. 00:07:35.23\00:07:37.21 Let's look at this aspect of the gospel, I think it is found here 00:07:37.24\00:07:41.35 in verse 12 of Hebrews Chapter 8 it says, "For I will be merciful 00:07:41.38\00:07:45.44 to their unrighteousness and their sins and iniquities 00:07:45.47\00:07:48.64 I will remember no more. " 00:07:48.67\00:07:50.78 What is that talking about? 00:07:50.81\00:07:51.97 Well these two things need to be joined together James. 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.68 The law of God being written in our hearts and in our minds. 00:07:54.71\00:07:57.87 And the mercy and forgiveness that God bestows upon us. 00:07:57.90\00:08:01.26 Whenever I think about the new covenant, I think of the women 00:08:01.29\00:08:05.58 caught in adultery in Chapter 8 of the gospel of John, 00:08:05.61\00:08:08.17 and her experience because she personifies a living experience 00:08:08.20\00:08:12.32 of what the new covenant is all about. 00:08:12.35\00:08:14.20 Because Jesus said to her " I don't condemn you", that's 00:08:14.23\00:08:18.32 forgiveness, that's the mercy aspect of the plan of salvation 00:08:18.35\00:08:21.61 in the gospel, then He said, now, "go and sin no more. " 00:08:21.64\00:08:25.43 It's futile for us to think in terms of going to sin no more, 00:08:25.46\00:08:30.67 unless we are living in the light of God's non-condemning 00:08:30.70\00:08:35.90 love for us, that's were the power is. 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.92 I don't condemn you, now go in the light of that love 00:08:37.95\00:08:41.25 that I have for you and sin no more. 00:08:41.28\00:08:42.90 So a vital aspect of this new covenant experience is the 00:08:42.93\00:08:47.85 mercy of God, the empowering mercy of God. 00:08:47.88\00:08:50.20 The grace of God that empowers us to live a different life. 00:08:50.23\00:08:53.36 We cannot have any kind of law put into our hearts into 00:08:53.39\00:08:57.01 our minds without recognizing first, that God is going 00:08:57.04\00:09:00.66 to take care of our guilt. 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.01 That God has taken care of our sins, 00:09:02.04\00:09:03.55 that He's purged them by Himself and that the essence 00:09:03.59\00:09:06.56 of what God is offering us is mercy and acceptance 00:09:06.59\00:09:09.52 in spite of ourselves. 00:09:09.56\00:09:10.82 And that empowers us, as it did with this women, 00:09:10.85\00:09:14.33 caught in the act of adultery. 00:09:14.36\00:09:15.38 It empowers to go forth and sin no more. 00:09:15.41\00:09:18.43 Sin being friends, the transgression of the law, 00:09:18.46\00:09:21.32 according to 1 John 3, verse 4. 00:09:21.35\00:09:23.23 But before we get to a revelation of the law of God, 00:09:23.26\00:09:27.50 we have, as you pointed out in Exodus, we have a revelation 00:09:27.53\00:09:30.30 of the delivering power of God. 00:09:30.34\00:09:32.04 Of the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:09:32.07\00:09:34.33 Written on the door posts, along the lentils, the blood 00:09:34.36\00:09:37.86 of Jesus Christ that covers us, forgives us, 00:09:37.90\00:09:40.33 that is merciful toward us. 00:09:40.36\00:09:42.00 This is new covenant theme. 00:09:42.03\00:09:43.30 The next aspect of the new covenant that Paul brings to 00:09:43.33\00:09:46.60 our attention here that we want to focus on, 00:09:46.63\00:09:47.88 is in verse 11, where he says, "None of them shall teach 00:09:47.91\00:09:51.74 his neighbor, and none his brothers, saying no the Lord 00:09:51.78\00:09:55.61 For all shall know Me from 00:09:55.64\00:09:57.62 the least of them to the greatest. " 00:09:57.66\00:09:59.08 So here is a personal intimate relationship with God that each 00:09:59.11\00:10:02.57 individual has, so that evangelistic witness, 00:10:02.60\00:10:06.10 so to speak, at some point becomes unnecessary because 00:10:06.13\00:10:10.43 your already in a personal relationship with God. 00:10:10.46\00:10:13.06 That doesn't mean we don't testify and share with one 00:10:13.09\00:10:15.35 another after we have come to Christ 00:10:15.38\00:10:17.83 and accepted the gospel. 00:10:17.87\00:10:19.59 But now we are in a personal one on one relationship with God. 00:10:19.62\00:10:23.78 We have the anointing of God's Spirit upon us and God is 00:10:23.81\00:10:27.66 speaking in our own hearts. 00:10:27.69\00:10:29.20 You know this is so powerful because this was 00:10:29.23\00:10:31.30 a failure in the old covenant. 00:10:31.33\00:10:32.35 When the Old covenant was given at Sinai, the people were 00:10:32.38\00:10:35.53 confronted with Moses whose face was bright and shiny, 00:10:35.56\00:10:38.67 and when they saw Moses come down from that mountain it was 00:10:38.70\00:10:41.82 filled with thunder and lightening, and they pulled 00:10:41.85\00:10:44.74 back and they were scared. 00:10:44.77\00:10:45.77 They said, they said, Moses you talk to us, you tell us what God 00:10:45.80\00:10:50.19 said but don't have God talk to us anymore. 00:10:50.22\00:10:52.78 In other words they weren't willing to engage in that 00:10:52.81\00:10:55.66 personal relationship with God. 00:10:55.69\00:10:56.93 They wanted a mediator, they wanted someone to stand between 00:10:56.97\00:10:59.90 them and God, a human being to stand between them and God 00:10:59.93\00:11:02.93 and we can do the same today friends, with Pastors, with 00:11:02.97\00:11:05.77 preachers, we can follow people instead of following God. 00:11:05.80\00:11:08.57 That is not God's purpose for the new covenant. 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.35 God wants us personally to engage with Him so that He can 00:11:11.38\00:11:15.10 teach us personally. 00:11:15.13\00:11:16.21 So they promised to obey God's law, but they did not enter into 00:11:16.25\00:11:21.93 a vital living relationship with God that would empower 00:11:21.96\00:11:25.02 them to actually be able to do it. 00:11:25.05\00:11:26.81 They were not willing to be personally taught of God. 00:11:26.84\00:11:29.03 Now this is so powerful, in the New Testament you find this 00:11:29.07\00:11:32.16 especially in 1 John Chapter 2. 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.62 In 1 John Chapter 2, Paul here excuse me, John here is speaking 00:11:34.65\00:11:39.74 about the anointing we are to have from the Holy One. 00:11:39.77\00:11:42.46 1 John Chapter 2 and verse 20. 00:11:42.49\00:11:44.74 Listen to these verses, it says, "But Ye have an unction from 00:11:44.77\00:11:47.30 the Holy One and you know all things. " 00:11:47.34\00:11:50.44 Now what is so powerful here s that the truth of the matter is 00:11:50.47\00:11:53.79 none of us know all things. 00:11:53.82\00:11:55.25 But the Holy Spirit knows all things. 00:11:55.28\00:11:56.80 And the Holy Spirit is promised to teach us all things. 00:11:56.83\00:12:00.15 The Holy Spirit wants us not to become man dependant. 00:12:00.18\00:12:02.74 That doesn't mean there is not a place for teachers, and 00:12:02.77\00:12:05.29 and preachers and Pastors. 00:12:05.32\00:12:06.29 There's place for them. 00:12:06.30\00:12:07.27 But we are not to be of a Paul or Cephas, of Cephas or Paul. 00:12:07.28\00:12:10.58 We are to be of Christ, we are to follow Christ. 00:12:10.61\00:12:13.03 He is the great teacher. 00:12:13.06\00:12:14.28 And God is promising each of us we can have this anointing. 00:12:14.31\00:12:17.71 We can know Him personally. 00:12:17.75\00:12:19.15 He can teach us personally. 00:12:19.18\00:12:20.55 I really like this word in verse 11 of Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:12:20.58\00:12:25.45 Know, everyone will know the Lord, it shows up in a number 00:12:25.48\00:12:29.35 of places in Scripture. 00:12:29.38\00:12:30.35 And the first time we see it in Genesis 4 where Adam knew Eve. 00:12:30.36\00:12:34.01 She gave birth to a son. 00:12:34.04\00:12:35.35 It's a word of intimacy. 00:12:35.38\00:12:36.90 Jesus used the word when He said that eternal life 00:12:36.93\00:12:39.79 is to know God. 00:12:39.82\00:12:40.79 And now Paul uses it and tells us it is a 00:12:40.80\00:12:43.47 part of the new covenant. 00:12:43.50\00:12:44.47 To enter into personal intimate relationship with God. 00:12:44.48\00:12:47.59 The law of God written in our hearts and minds. 00:12:47.62\00:12:50.29 The gospel forgiveness. 00:12:50.32\00:12:51.86 The power of God to empower this relationship. 00:12:51.89\00:12:54.62 The relationship we have with God so we don't rely on man 00:12:54.65\00:12:58.12 But we rely on the anointing of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:58.15\00:13:00.78 This is the essence, this is principles of the new covenant 00:13:00.81\00:13:04.71 experience of what God is calling us to. 00:13:04.74\00:13:07.19 Of what Paul is pointing us to in Hebrews Chapter 8. 00:13:07.22\00:13:10.45 This is to be the experience that God wants us 00:13:10.48\00:13:14.24 to have with Him. 00:13:14.27\00:13:15.24 That God wants you to have with Him. 00:13:15.25\00:13:16.68 And He is calling you to that experience right now. 00:13:16.71\00:13:19.24 Don't neglect it! 00:13:19.27\00:13:20.52
